- 0:00Speaker 1: I was still single at thirty seven, I was still single,
- 0:03Speaker 1: and then hit thirty nine, You're still single and be like,
- 0:05Speaker 1: how come you that have all of this are still single?
- 0:09Speaker 1: What's wrong with you? I never identified with Cinderella losing
- 0:13Speaker 1: her shoe, like, no, I'm not going to lose my
- 0:16Speaker 1: shoe or Pocahontas waiting in the bushes for John Smith
- 0:20Speaker 1: to find her. That was not my story.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Welcome moms, Welcome to Inside the Mom's Club. I'm your host,
- 0:29Speaker 2: Monica Samuels, and I'm here with Julie Orchid, my co host.
- 0:33Speaker 1: Hey, Julie, I'm super excited to be here.
- 0:36Speaker 2: I know you are. That's an exciting day. We're gonna
- 0:38Speaker 2: have some We're gonna have a really nice show and
- 0:41Speaker 2: fun and interesting. So I can't wait. So what are
- 0:47Speaker 2: you up to lately? What's your what do you have
- 0:50Speaker 2: on your mind? What's the most pressing thing besides exercising?
- 0:53Speaker 2: What You've now enlisted me?
- 0:55Speaker 3: And that's right, I don't know.
- 0:56Speaker 4: I've kind of been on this self journey, so to speak,
- 0:59Speaker 4: for twenty two twenty six and I took a you know,
- 1:02Speaker 4: a little hiki poo into the Grand Canyon and out
- 1:05Speaker 4: and then I decided to go to California on this
- 1:08Speaker 4: extremely long road trip by myself with my dog, and
- 1:12Speaker 4: I thought I was going to be like wanting it
- 1:15Speaker 4: over quickly and I can't believe I'm doing this and
- 1:19Speaker 4: kind of the dread the ick, and I wasn't. It
- 1:22Speaker 4: was fabulous and I was able to take time to
- 1:27Speaker 4: really deep dive into my life in the second half
- 1:29Speaker 4: half of my life. So it made me even more
- 1:32Speaker 4: excited and to remove some of those terrible wounds. And
- 1:36Speaker 4: I'm talking like, you know, mental wounds that you think about,
- 1:39Speaker 4: whether it's shame or what my role should have been.
- 1:44Speaker 4: You know, way back, I'd let go of a.
- 1:46Speaker 1: Lot of that stuff.
- 1:47Speaker 2: I'll ask you this question. Yes, if you had the
- 1:51Speaker 2: opportunity to do your life over again, knowing.
- 1:56Speaker 1: My life over again, knowing well, nineteen.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Are being nineteen and right now and you're in this
- 2:04Speaker 2: in the culture we live in right now, right what
- 2:08Speaker 2: would you do? How do you think your life would
- 2:09Speaker 2: be different when your opportunities be what how would that
- 2:14Speaker 2: Do you think that would be different or would it
- 2:15Speaker 2: even be different?
- 2:16Speaker 4: Lack it might have just I think we all have
- 2:19Speaker 4: to fail, so I think there would still be parts
- 2:21Speaker 4: of that. It's no, it's it's not a perfect journey.
- 2:26Speaker 4: But what I can say, if I could, you know,
- 2:28Speaker 4: go back and be nineteen again, I would chase more
- 2:32Speaker 4: opportunity that was right in front of me and not
- 2:34Speaker 4: be afraid. And then I would also really think highly
- 2:38Speaker 4: about your self esteem and confidence and maybe make better
- 2:43Speaker 4: decisions that would last me a little bit longer. And
- 2:47Speaker 4: then you know, kind of take the stigma away of
- 2:51Speaker 4: you know, what I should be doing or other people's expectations.
- 2:55Speaker 2: There's part of the culture too that puts expectations on you.
- 2:58Speaker 2: Oh sure, that still I think exists, Like you wanted
- 3:03Speaker 2: to be a mom, so you wanted to be married.
- 3:06Speaker 2: I mean, I know some younger women these days now
- 3:09Speaker 2: in their twenties, their late twenties or early thirties particularly,
- 3:13Speaker 2: they're not married yet and they feel the pressure of
- 3:18Speaker 2: I'm not married.
- 3:19Speaker 4: It takes a lot of a life experience to learn
- 3:21Speaker 4: that you are enough and to quiet that voice. And yeah,
- 3:27Speaker 4: I just keep learning and it's awesome.
- 3:29Speaker 2: Well we all do, so that's the good part. Yeah,
- 3:32Speaker 2: until we can't anymore. So we are going to talk
- 3:35Speaker 2: further about this. We are with our guest, who is amazing,
- 3:39Speaker 2: as we say here in the Mom's Club. She is
- 3:42Speaker 2: an actress, activist, and a mom whose journey spans continence, cultures,
- 3:47Speaker 2: and causes. She is a woman who makes you rethink
- 3:50Speaker 2: the possible. Yeah, because she didn't wait for the right
- 3:54Speaker 2: time or the right circumstances. She created them herself, and
- 3:58Speaker 2: she is a great inspiration to every one. Please welcome
- 4:01Speaker 2: Moran Attias. Welcome to the Mom's Club.
- 4:03Speaker 3: He Hi, thank you, Thank you for doing club.
- 4:07Speaker 2: Thank you. Yeah, it's a fun club, it really is
- 4:09Speaker 2: where we have a great time together. Well, so, Moran,
- 4:13Speaker 2: you are I mean, I can't even begin to describe you,
- 4:19Speaker 2: because you are. There's only a word to describe you.
- 4:21Speaker 2: And here in the Mom's Club we say amazing, which
- 4:23Speaker 2: is even better than amazing, because when I think of
- 4:26Speaker 2: all the things you did, Let's start with you as
- 4:29Speaker 2: a nineteen year old deciding to leave your home country
- 4:35Speaker 2: and go to another country and start a career. Not
- 4:38Speaker 2: many people your age would have pursued that or even
- 4:44Speaker 2: even dreamt of such a thing.
- 4:46Speaker 1: What made you?
- 4:49Speaker 2: What brought you to do that? Like, how did you
- 4:51Speaker 2: find it in yourself to do such a thing? Or
- 4:53Speaker 2: do you look back and think Oh my gosh, what
- 4:55Speaker 2: was I thinking? I was nineteen years old?
- 4:57Speaker 1: Tell us about that, I think, yeah, it's you know,
- 5:05Speaker 1: looking back, of course, there's a part of me that thinks, wow,
- 5:08Speaker 1: I was so young.
- 5:09Speaker 4: You know.
- 5:09Speaker 1: Now that I have a daughter, she's tinier than she thinks, so,
- 5:14Speaker 1: you know, and I look at girls that are eighteen
- 5:16Speaker 1: or nineteen my age and they look like very very young.
- 5:20Speaker 1: But at the time I felt really mature and very
- 5:23Speaker 1: prepared for the world. Obviously that was not true, but
- 5:25Speaker 1: I just had this confidence about I can learn. I
- 5:30Speaker 1: love to learn. I'm a great student, So I learned
- 5:32Speaker 1: the language, or I'll learn the culture, I'll learn whatever
- 5:35Speaker 1: profession there is to be, and I'll succeed in that adventure.
- 5:40Speaker 1: But it was very clear to me that I was
- 5:42Speaker 1: only going for a short time, a short time and
- 5:45Speaker 1: come back to my home country to Israel and study psychology.
- 5:49Speaker 1: So it wasn't like, oh, I'm going to go conquer
- 5:51Speaker 1: the world and I'm going to go be an actress
- 5:53Speaker 1: and a model and a host and all those things.
- 5:55Speaker 1: It was just like, I'm going to go make B
- 5:58Speaker 1: level modeling, take enough money so I can go back
- 6:02Speaker 1: and just study, rather than study and be a waitress. Yeah,
- 6:06Speaker 1: you know, so I like to do things fully, so
- 6:09Speaker 1: if I would go to school, it would just just
- 6:11Speaker 1: to study, so I would have the money prepared in advance.
- 6:14Speaker 1: That was my plan. And then I got to Milan.
- 6:18Speaker 1: First I was in Germany again, C level modeling jobs,
- 6:22Speaker 1: a little bit money here, a little bit money there.
- 6:24Speaker 1: It was just like, how can I work better? But
- 6:27Speaker 1: never with a big dream of like, you know, being
- 6:30Speaker 1: on the cover of magazines and campaigns. And then when
- 6:34Speaker 1: I got to Milan, of course it was easy to
- 6:36Speaker 1: fall in love with the country. You would walk down
- 6:39Speaker 1: the street and no matter what age you are, how
- 6:42Speaker 1: you look, a bus driver will stop the bus and
- 6:46Speaker 1: ask you if you need help. And I just felt
- 6:48Speaker 1: like I'm in a movie of like, you know, very
- 6:50Speaker 1: very friendly. And I was like, oh, this country is easy.
- 6:54Speaker 1: With my mentality, I'm much more of a warm person open.
- 6:59Speaker 1: So that worked and I met it a crazy woman.
- 7:01Speaker 1: I call her crazy because you know she was. She
- 7:05Speaker 1: said that you're going to be a you know, you're
- 7:07Speaker 1: going to be a study. I said, am I going
- 7:10Speaker 1: to be I'm going to be a start. I don't
- 7:11Speaker 1: even speak the language. And she said, you're Jewish. You're smart.
- 7:15Speaker 1: Three months, you'll you'll learn everything. And just that belief
- 7:21Speaker 1: in me when she said that, even just saying that,
- 7:23Speaker 1: just hearing it for the first time, like oh she okay,
- 7:26Speaker 1: maybe I can. I didn't question it. I just started
- 7:30Speaker 1: to study Italian and in three months I spoke fluent
- 7:33Speaker 1: Italian and we She was sort of she was more
- 7:37Speaker 1: than an agent. She was really like a mother figure
- 7:40Speaker 1: in Milan, and we grew up together, she as a
- 7:45Speaker 1: as a manager and agent and me as a as
- 7:47Speaker 1: a talent. And and then I wasn't aware that millions
- 7:53Speaker 1: of people were watching me because I always saw like
- 7:55Speaker 1: nobody cares, nobody knows me, nobody knows me, nobody. It
- 7:57Speaker 1: was just that feeling like, oh, nobody's watching this, who's
- 8:00Speaker 1: watching this? Who's hearing that? And it grew and grew
- 8:04Speaker 1: and she was right. She she was right so.
- 8:09Speaker 2: Well, and you started off modeling. I mean, tell us
- 8:12Speaker 2: a little bit about your career in Italy. I think
- 8:14Speaker 2: you could be a movie like this whole story share
- 8:18Speaker 2: that with this.
- 8:19Speaker 1: Well you for saying that, actually, who would play me?
- 8:24Speaker 1: I'd be like, who's gonna play me? So it's it's
- 8:28Speaker 1: crazy because my life does have chapters with like Crazy
- 8:32Speaker 1: Peaks and Italy. At that time, there weren't a lot
- 8:36Speaker 1: of you know, there was before prior to reality shows
- 8:39Speaker 1: and all these you know, everybody became a celebrity and
- 8:43Speaker 1: like after a season. This was like old school worker
- 8:47Speaker 1: craft have talent, like learn how to sing, dance, learn
- 8:52Speaker 1: the language, and just be like like know a lot
- 8:56Speaker 1: of things so you can you can be in the
- 8:57Speaker 1: entertainment industry. And I just enjoined the journey of learning.
- 9:02Speaker 1: So of course I didn't know.
- 9:04Speaker 5: Well.
- 9:05Speaker 1: The first job I got, which I was obviously a
- 9:07Speaker 1: little delusional because I'm not from the country, right, so
- 9:09Speaker 1: I thought I'm going to host this prime time talk show.
- 9:12Speaker 1: I'm like, oh my god, I got a hosting job.
- 9:16Speaker 1: And my role was and then the host comes and
- 9:18Speaker 1: she's like a very you know, the biggest TV personality
- 9:22Speaker 1: in Italy. Her name is Rafel and that was actually
- 9:24Speaker 1: my role was to bring the envelope and to say that.
- 9:29Speaker 1: But I didn't look down on that. I was like, oh, okay,
- 9:32Speaker 1: that's she's she's sixty years old, she is in that spot.
- 9:36Speaker 1: I am just nineteen. I'll bring the envelope and smile
- 9:40Speaker 1: about it and be grateful. For this opportunity. There was
- 9:43Speaker 1: no bitterness about any Let's say they call it an
- 9:48Speaker 1: Italian lacaveta. You have to see you have to do
- 9:53Speaker 1: like the like mail room, you know, yeah it's here.
- 9:56Speaker 1: You have to do though those jobs. And I just
- 9:59Speaker 1: honor that that position of like one step at a time. Finally,
- 10:03Speaker 1: I was hosting in the same studio my own show
- 10:06Speaker 1: with a great host, cabrol Conti. So but it grew
- 10:11Speaker 1: and my Italian and accents and just it was a
- 10:15Speaker 1: you know, Italy is a beautiful country. Oh yeah, it's
- 10:20Speaker 1: I mean, who doesn't like Italy?
- 10:21Speaker 2: But I I love Italy. My husband and I the
- 10:25Speaker 2: last few summers we've spent every summer in Italy. And
- 10:29Speaker 2: I can only say choo. I mean, I'm I'm embarrassed.
- 10:33Speaker 1: I don't speak it.
- 10:34Speaker 2: I need to do better.
- 10:36Speaker 1: I know I do, but if you want it to
- 10:38Speaker 1: you would. But it's just, you know, I enjoyed it
- 10:40Speaker 1: because to me, I was like I want I always
- 10:43Speaker 1: wanted to be in school, so to me that oh
- 10:44Speaker 1: this is my school. Now I'm learning the language and
- 10:47Speaker 1: I'm learning the culture. And I remember I was just
- 10:50Speaker 1: challenging myself learning Shakespeare and Italian, not just wow the
- 10:54Speaker 1: normally yeah wow, soe fan, you're so fanfare h do
- 11:01Speaker 1: you want me to cite it? To be.
- 11:05Speaker 2: My daughter?
- 11:06Speaker 1: Which is amazing. You know, I actually don't know a
- 11:09Speaker 1: lot of Shakespeare. But my daughter, who's three and a
- 11:11Speaker 1: half years old, she goes to school where they teach
- 11:14Speaker 1: them Shakespeare. So oh wow. So yeah, I mean, if
- 11:18Speaker 1: you have a good surrounding and you have great teachers,
- 11:21Speaker 1: you'll learn I think they'll learn anything. Yeah. But I
- 11:25Speaker 1: taught myself the language. There wasn't a teacher. I woke
- 11:28Speaker 1: up every day, I went to the cafe, had a cappuccino,
- 11:31Speaker 1: cormeto read the entire newspaper, didn't understand much of it,
- 11:36Speaker 1: and then slowly, by slowly, things words made sense, you know,
- 11:39Speaker 1: they repeated themselves and I started to understand it.
- 11:42Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 11:43Speaker 2: So she went from Italy? Then do you come to
- 11:46Speaker 2: the US? I mean, next you make another stop to
- 11:48Speaker 2: the United States? I mean you were so.
- 11:50Speaker 1: There was a before. So I got to a point
- 11:53Speaker 1: where I did a lot of I had a very
- 11:57Speaker 1: popular career, like I was on primetime TV, but was
- 12:00Speaker 1: mostly hosting, and we thought like what would be the
- 12:02Speaker 1: next step? What could I challenge myself in the entertainment industry,
- 12:05Speaker 1: and I was suggested to do acting, and I thought like, well,
- 12:09Speaker 1: that's a craft on its own. I mean, I've never
- 12:11Speaker 1: done that. Just say that. The first teacher I went
- 12:14Speaker 1: to was a no no, was a big no no.
- 12:18Speaker 1: The second teacher was a teacher, an acting coach that
- 12:21Speaker 1: changed my life and the love for this profession. And
- 12:24Speaker 1: since I started working with him, I just I knew
- 12:27Speaker 1: that that's what I wanted to do. So acting became
- 12:30Speaker 1: my main and only focus. And when I decided finally
- 12:34Speaker 1: to move to the land of all opportunities and dreams, America,
- 12:41Speaker 1: I moved to New York to study at least Raspburg
- 12:44Speaker 1: Institute and just you know, build a craft, build tools,
- 12:49Speaker 1: learn again a new language. And language is not just
- 12:52Speaker 1: the words, there's just there's stories, there's history, there's culture
- 12:56Speaker 1: within the language. So it's through all the plays that
- 12:59Speaker 1: I had to read and wanted to read to understand
- 13:02Speaker 1: like what each part of this world, this world like
- 13:05Speaker 1: this is America is a whole other world, and every
- 13:08Speaker 1: state is different and every dialect is different. So it
- 13:11Speaker 1: was so again back to school, always in school. Yeah,
- 13:15Speaker 1: and I loved staying here. Yeah, I was. This is
- 13:18Speaker 1: definitely a place that would give me the most opportunities
- 13:22Speaker 1: as an actress. H.
- 13:24Speaker 4: Yeah, You've done some really impressive stuff, stuff that I've seen,
- 13:28Speaker 4: so it's really exciting to be talking to you. I
- 13:31Speaker 4: want to jump forward to this talk that you did
- 13:33Speaker 4: a little bit, yeah, the Ted Talk, because it was very,
- 13:39Speaker 4: very good, and yeah, listen to it twice because there's
- 13:42Speaker 4: some things in there based off the story that you're telling.
- 13:46Speaker 4: I'm very surprised to hear I think I would to
- 13:51Speaker 4: hear you say, am I enough?
- 13:54Speaker 1: So the Ted Talk was an interesting opportunity. It was
- 13:57Speaker 1: the topic was actually about le energy, how we can
- 14:01Speaker 1: about community, and as we discussed before the show started,
- 14:05Speaker 1: I do and I love a lot of volunteering work.
- 14:08Speaker 1: So I love community and it's so important to me.
- 14:11Speaker 1: And I went to Haiti and after the earthquake and
- 14:14Speaker 1: I was able to lead an evacuation mission and save
- 14:18Speaker 1: a lot of people with wonderful people. But it was
- 14:21Speaker 1: really my mission to lead, and that sounded like a
- 14:26Speaker 1: great story to share, you know, encourage people to go
- 14:29Speaker 1: to different countries that I didn't even know where it
- 14:31Speaker 1: was on the map. I didn't know where Haiti was
- 14:33Speaker 1: and just give yourself for somebody that you don't know.
- 14:38Speaker 1: But then as I was looking into it, I thought,
- 14:42Speaker 1: it is not as courageous to speak about that as
- 14:45Speaker 1: it would be about something that I was most ashamed of.
- 14:49Speaker 1: And the thing that with the great success that I
- 14:53Speaker 1: was given and worked hard for, there was always one
- 14:57Speaker 1: piece that it never succeeded, you know, according to society,
- 15:01Speaker 1: and the piece that was missing that was I was
- 15:04Speaker 1: still single. I was still single at thirty seven, I
- 15:08Speaker 1: was still single. And then hit thirty nine, You're still single.
- 15:11Speaker 1: That's like, you know, you're on a cliff. Are you
- 15:14Speaker 1: going to jump? And what are you going to do?
- 15:16Speaker 1: And I just found myself everything that I suppressed in
- 15:22Speaker 1: the past just all went up and flooded me with
- 15:27Speaker 1: tons of shame, like and because people knew me and
- 15:32Speaker 1: knew the success, the gap was so huge, and people like,
- 15:35Speaker 1: how right you that have all this are still single?
- 15:39Speaker 1: What's wrong with you? What's the problem? Are you difficult?
- 15:42Speaker 1: You can't keep a man, you can't feed him? And
- 15:44Speaker 1: I mean, you know, and it didn't just come out
- 15:46Speaker 1: from you know, media or friends, but you know, obviously
- 15:49Speaker 1: inside the family. And then when you get to the
- 15:52Speaker 1: silence when nobody talks about it, then you're like, oh
- 15:54Speaker 1: my god, they gave up on me. And you know,
- 15:57Speaker 1: nobody's talking about this is the elephant in the room.
- 15:59Speaker 1: All single woman coming. Everybody else is married here, everybody
- 16:03Speaker 1: else has kids except Miran. You know, my younger sister
- 16:06Speaker 1: got married and at the time, I went to the
- 16:08Speaker 1: wedding with a partner and he wanted to get married
- 16:12Speaker 1: and everything. But so I was saved at my sister's
- 16:15Speaker 1: wedding question. But the energy was like, you know, when
- 16:20Speaker 1: is it gonna happen for you? And I think you
- 16:23Speaker 1: ladies were talking about the expectation and the expectation for
- 16:26Speaker 1: every woman and every Disney story and every Biblical story
- 16:30Speaker 1: is to be chosen by a man and be wed.
- 16:34Speaker 1: And I choose these words strategically. It's to be chosen.
- 16:39Speaker 1: It's not even your initiative to choose your path. You
- 16:42Speaker 1: need to be selected, you another one hundred other women,
- 16:47Speaker 1: by this one man that is going to save you
- 16:49Speaker 1: from your poverty, from your ignorance, from whatever, and he
- 16:53Speaker 1: will give you the life. And I always I never
- 16:56Speaker 1: liked it. I never identified with Cinderella losing like, no,
- 17:01Speaker 1: I'm not gonna lose my shoe or Pocahontas waiting in
- 17:05Speaker 1: the bushes for John Smith to find her. That was
- 17:08Speaker 1: not my story. I was more like, oh, Madonna like that, Yeah,
- 17:11Speaker 1: that's my that's my reference and Madonna the singer, performer
- 17:17Speaker 1: on things and so much more, and I was like, Okay,
- 17:21Speaker 1: this doesn't fit my story. This is not really me.
- 17:24Speaker 1: Like I had relationships, but they didn't feel like there
- 17:28Speaker 1: were the one and I just felt like if I
- 17:31Speaker 1: would do it, it would just to content somebody else.
- 17:34Speaker 1: M hm, you know that. And by the way we
- 17:37Speaker 1: feel it inside. Yeah, I don't know about guys because
- 17:40Speaker 1: I'm not a guy, but I feel like women have
- 17:42Speaker 1: this thing in their gut and their belly and the
- 17:45Speaker 1: womb where we feel it. It's that mom instinct. And
- 17:49Speaker 1: whether you have children or you don't, women have that.
- 17:52Speaker 1: You feel it and you're you're like, oh, this doesn't
- 17:54Speaker 1: feel right. So I usually trust that. And when I
- 17:59Speaker 1: have trust to that, that's when I failed. That's when
- 18:03Speaker 1: I really failed. But because I failed myself because I
- 18:05Speaker 1: knew I was, I was kind of like arguing with
- 18:07Speaker 1: my body. My body's selling me one thing, and my
- 18:09Speaker 1: mind is like, no, no, go do it. That's what
- 18:11Speaker 1: you need to be doing or you should be doing,
- 18:14Speaker 1: or that's what your mom would do. Like you wanna
- 18:17Speaker 1: you wanna? You want to follow the path that your
- 18:19Speaker 1: parents had. My parents have been together since they're fifteen. Wow,
- 18:23Speaker 1: I know wow? Right, yeah, exactly wow. And they're still
- 18:27Speaker 1: together and like and there are two pieces and they're
- 18:29Speaker 1: still like me.
- 18:30Speaker 4: They're like me, yeah, saghi and sounds about right, don't
- 18:34Speaker 4: yeah that?
- 18:35Speaker 1: And by the way, I don't even want that, but
- 18:37Speaker 1: you're like, why don't I want that? They're my parents.
- 18:39Speaker 1: So it's it's this constant dialogue. But it wasn't a
- 18:44Speaker 1: kind dialogue. You were talking about what would you do
- 18:47Speaker 1: if you go back to being nineteen? I would be
- 18:50Speaker 1: kinder to myself. I would be kinder to myself. Like
- 18:54Speaker 1: that is really what it is. Because I had I
- 18:57Speaker 1: had the desires and the work ethic and the for life,
- 19:00Speaker 1: but I wasn't kind to myself. I was just so harsh.
- 19:04Speaker 1: I always beat myself up. Oh I didn't do this
- 19:06Speaker 1: and I didn't do that while I was succeeding. So
- 19:09Speaker 1: I think that is something I'm learning to do well.
- 19:12Speaker 1: I had to learn to do to even become a mother. Anyway,
- 19:15Speaker 1: cut to Big Band is like thirty nine, You're done,
- 19:20Speaker 1: You're capute. Okay, eggs are your life is zoo friend
- 19:23Speaker 1: dying girl and they're frying and forever any lady out there,
- 19:29Speaker 1: when you get to your thirties even earlier, freeze your eggs. Yeah,
- 19:33Speaker 1: just freeze your eggs. And because those eggs are going
- 19:36Speaker 1: to have the vitality of you know, a younger age
- 19:39Speaker 1: and they were more they can survive. Better, freeze your eggs.
- 19:43Speaker 1: Whether you can, you'll be with a guy or not.
- 19:46Speaker 1: And I did it relatively late, but luckily I was
- 19:50Speaker 1: you know, I had eggs that was fertile, which was
- 19:52Speaker 1: like whoa, yeah, you know when number one? Okay, I'm
- 19:56Speaker 1: I'm capable, you know, and I'm worthy of that. And
- 20:00Speaker 1: then the difficult part was to engage disengage from the
- 20:07Speaker 1: narrative I grew up on, just to like like everybody knows,
- 20:11Speaker 1: you meet somebody, fall in love, you get married, you
- 20:13Speaker 1: have kids. And I was like, wait a second, that's
- 20:16Speaker 1: not my narrative. That's not my story. It's not my story.
- 20:19Speaker 1: It's not happy. This is not my story. So how
- 20:22Speaker 1: do I can I can I tell a different story.
- 20:24Speaker 1: Can my story be have a child, follow get married,
- 20:30Speaker 1: follow up, I don't know whatever in the story is like,
- 20:31Speaker 1: can I start differently the decision to become a mom
- 20:36Speaker 1: on my own? And I want to clarify, like, it's
- 20:40Speaker 1: it's not. It's just like with a sperm donor, there's
- 20:43Speaker 1: no daddy, there's no you know, uncle, friend, neighbor, the
- 20:49Speaker 1: gay best friend it was, you know, those are also options.
- 20:53Speaker 1: But I specifically chose this option because I felt that
- 20:55Speaker 1: this was the right thing for me. Without logic, it
- 20:59Speaker 1: didn't makes sense, it didn't sound logic, but it felt right.
- 21:06Speaker 1: And then I then I did it and I got really,
- 21:09Speaker 1: really lucky. I had the most amazing pregnancy, which is
- 21:13Speaker 1: also U was a surprise because I thought the idea
- 21:17Speaker 1: of getting pregnant was disgusting to me before right, no,
- 21:22Speaker 1: the truth, Like I had women around me vomiting all
- 21:25Speaker 1: the time, feeling nauseah. I'm like, what is this? You
- 21:29Speaker 1: mean to be pregnant?
- 21:30Speaker 2: Yeah, that's not fun, And you're right.
- 21:32Speaker 1: I don't want this. I don't want to like. I
- 21:35Speaker 1: nothing about it, And there was there was a resentment.
- 21:38Speaker 1: I had a resentment that I had to do it
- 21:40Speaker 1: and guys didn't and I had to do it. Now
- 21:43Speaker 1: while I love him, al Pacino can have a child
- 21:46Speaker 1: at eighty one? Why why are we with this deadline?
- 21:50Speaker 1: Why do we get this you know, restriction? But for me,
- 21:54Speaker 1: then I this deadline became something that forced me to
- 21:58Speaker 1: choose and then and once I chose to do it
- 22:02Speaker 1: this way, it was just the most divine experience I've
- 22:07Speaker 1: ever had, so and not loving to be a woman
- 22:10Speaker 1: and to loving this amazing gift that we only have
- 22:15Speaker 1: is to create life.
- 22:16Speaker 2: I actually, I know I know someone who we had
- 22:20Speaker 2: been invited to her wedding and she canceled it at
- 22:26Speaker 2: the last minute. They'd been engaged once before, and she
- 22:29Speaker 2: canceled it because he was an alcoholic. And then she
- 22:32Speaker 2: canceled it again because he was an alcoholic. But really
- 22:36Speaker 2: she wanted to have a baby. Yeah, and you know
- 22:40Speaker 2: what after she did canceled it, she did what you did,
- 22:43Speaker 2: and she had a baby. Now she has a beautiful
- 22:45Speaker 2: little girl who's about a year old. So yeah, you know,
- 22:49Speaker 2: would it have been better to marry the guy marry
- 22:52Speaker 2: an alcoholic? Is you know? It's like people are making
- 22:55Speaker 2: choices that are good for works for them, and sometimes
- 22:59Speaker 2: it's socie like. Society would almost say, well, you would
- 23:02Speaker 2: have been better to get married, but she almost married
- 23:05Speaker 2: someone who was clearly not going to work out very
- 23:08Speaker 2: well for her.
- 23:08Speaker 1: So yeah, you know I had those options too.
- 23:12Speaker 2: Yeah, I was gonna say, did you did you ever
- 23:15Speaker 2: think about settling along the way and just yeah, I'm
- 23:18Speaker 2: sorry because it was the pressure.
- 23:20Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 23:20Speaker 2: So I feel like a lot of women women do
- 23:22Speaker 2: that so well. Speaking of whether women who are out
- 23:25Speaker 2: there who have questions, we have our zoomer moms who
- 23:28Speaker 2: I've bet have a million questions for you. So we
- 23:30Speaker 2: would like to welcome in our zoomer moms. Tell us
- 23:33Speaker 2: your name, where you're from, a little bit about yourself,
- 23:36Speaker 2: and do you have a question from Miran? And I'm
- 23:39Speaker 2: going to start with Jennifer, welcome to the Mom's Club.
- 23:44Speaker 3: Thank you so much for having me.
- 23:46Speaker 1: I'm so happy to be here.
- 23:47Speaker 3: And you know, I loved more on hearing your story
- 23:52Speaker 3: and man like to see what an incredible role Molley
- 23:58Speaker 3: larks to all women in. But just like the whole
- 24:01Speaker 3: idea listening to your inner voice, you know, healing your
- 24:05Speaker 3: inner child, Like that's big stuff on top of all
- 24:09Speaker 3: the other impressive things you do like speak many languages.
- 24:12Speaker 3: So I just want to say I'm very much in
- 24:14Speaker 3: awe of you and your strength. And you know, listening
- 24:17Speaker 3: to your voice is something that is much harder to
- 24:20Speaker 3: do than people know. So I'm just I want to
- 24:25Speaker 3: thank you for that. And but you know, we all
- 24:27Speaker 3: know you talked about your agent in Italy who's like
- 24:30Speaker 3: I just I believe in you. I think you can
- 24:32Speaker 3: do this. So I'm going to give you three months
- 24:33Speaker 3: and you know you're going to be speaking Italian and
- 24:36Speaker 3: just those people along the way that lead in you
- 24:38Speaker 3: kind of allowing you to to be bigger than you
- 24:42Speaker 3: thought you could be. And you know, one of the
- 24:44Speaker 3: things about the Mom's so I love is that we
- 24:47Speaker 3: all scored each other in that way. We're like, you're
- 24:49Speaker 3: going to get through this. We know you are. We
- 24:51Speaker 3: see your strength even when you don't. So you know,
- 24:55Speaker 3: who are the people you have in your life now?
- 24:57Speaker 3: Like when does your and who are the people will
- 25:02Speaker 3: keep you going and support you.
- 25:04Speaker 1: So I actually have two official like mentors, like two
- 25:13Speaker 1: women that have accompanied me for the last few years,
- 25:19Speaker 1: and they are my center, my compass, like I would
- 25:23Speaker 1: like like again, I'm studying myself now the the the
- 25:28Speaker 1: place I want to be and is I don't want
- 25:30Speaker 1: to allow shame or my traumatic like behavior that was
- 25:36Speaker 1: caused from different traumas to lead my life. I want
- 25:39Speaker 1: to lead my life, so I need that professional help.
- 25:43Speaker 1: And they're my tribe. They accompanied me through you know,
- 25:46Speaker 1: October seventh, which was extremely traumatic and still is through
- 25:51Speaker 1: the process of the TED talk, just maintaining being the
- 25:54Speaker 1: vessel of light, like what am I doing in this
- 25:56Speaker 1: in this world? And they we check in on a
- 26:00Speaker 1: weekly basis. So that's like my professional tribe. And they're
- 26:04Speaker 1: more than just professional. This is like my oxygen, and
- 26:08Speaker 1: just they keep they I want, I just want to
- 26:11Speaker 1: keep elevated. You know, it's really easy to go down.
- 26:14Speaker 1: It's really easy with the energy in the world, and
- 26:16Speaker 1: you just open the news and you're going to go
- 26:17Speaker 1: down with those thoughts. So how do I stay above that?
- 26:21Speaker 1: How do I see and hear all this tragedy and
- 26:27Speaker 1: pain and still choose light and still choose to speak
- 26:30Speaker 1: with kindness and compassion. I have to work at that.
- 26:34Speaker 1: So that's for that. And then I have a best seat,
- 26:37Speaker 1: which is so great to meet and at forty years
- 26:40Speaker 1: I mean, I'm forty five but at forty years old
- 26:43Speaker 1: at best sea, like, I mean, who that's fun? Like,
- 26:47Speaker 1: I you know, you always think like, oh, people have
- 26:50Speaker 1: school friends from school from kindergarten, and which is great.
- 26:53Speaker 1: I have a few of those as well. But to
- 26:55Speaker 1: meet somebody at your mid forties that are like, is
- 26:59Speaker 1: your soul sister? Was really cool. So I have she's
- 27:03Speaker 1: my friend, my best friend, and also my stylist, but
- 27:07Speaker 1: she's really first my friend. And she has four kids
- 27:10Speaker 1: and I have one kid, and she has a traditional
- 27:12Speaker 1: set of family and I don't. And we just really
- 27:17Speaker 1: I learned from her. I hope she learns from me.
- 27:19Speaker 1: And it's a really beautiful friendship.
- 27:24Speaker 3: That's amazing.
- 27:25Speaker 1: Alana, I should say her name, Alanah, Oh that's beautiful.
- 27:29Speaker 5: Well yeah, And to me, it's really important that people
- 27:33Speaker 5: realize that you're your friendships, your close friendships can be
- 27:38Speaker 5: as important as your marriage relationship, and you really need more.
- 27:43Speaker 3: Than one relationship. You need a whole constellation of relationships.
- 27:49Speaker 3: And they, you know, I think, you know, women are
- 27:52Speaker 3: starting to rewrite the rules and the you know, around
- 27:56Speaker 3: relationships and marriage and family, and you know, someone like
- 28:00Speaker 3: you being like so open to speaking about how hard
- 28:04Speaker 3: it was coming from a very traditional family to choose
- 28:08Speaker 3: a different path and push back and and to your parents,
- 28:12Speaker 3: it will help so many other girls who are in
- 28:15Speaker 3: that same situation. She's the same thing, and not have
- 28:18Speaker 3: not you know, be stronger than the thought okay.
- 28:22Speaker 1: Yeah, I've had, which was the most Look. You know,
- 28:25Speaker 1: there's this big word that is in the last few
- 28:27Speaker 1: years kind of dominating the media, which is called influencer.
- 28:31Speaker 1: And I thought, Okay, what how do I want to influence?
- 28:35Speaker 1: Is it by selling a new lipstick and telling women
- 28:38Speaker 1: what shade will look back on them? Okay, fine, but
- 28:42Speaker 1: if I can influence on them to choose themselves, to
- 28:46Speaker 1: choose what's best for them, Because I'm not advocating whether
- 28:49Speaker 1: to have a child or not have a child, right
- 28:50Speaker 1: married or not. It's really about wait a second, you
- 28:53Speaker 1: will have, as you said, advice from other people that
- 28:56Speaker 1: they they're not you. My mom is not me. She
- 29:00Speaker 1: will want the best for me, but honestly she doesn't
- 29:03Speaker 1: at the end of the day, she doesn't know everything
- 29:05Speaker 1: about what is right for me. And it's okay, so
- 29:09Speaker 1: how do I talk to myself but honestly and kindly, like,
- 29:13Speaker 1: let's cut the bullshit. You want this. Yeah, okay, Now,
- 29:16Speaker 1: why are you so afraid to say it out loud?
- 29:19Speaker 1: I think I've always wanted to have a child like this.
- 29:22Speaker 1: I was just so ashamed to admit it. This is
- 29:24Speaker 1: how I wanted to go because what's wrong with it?
- 29:25Speaker 1: You don't want to do it with a man. And
- 29:27Speaker 1: now that I have my daughter at three years old, oh,
- 29:31Speaker 1: I mean I have mothers. I'm not for my family
- 29:36Speaker 1: come to me like genius, genius, like like it was
- 29:41Speaker 1: a startup. Now I'm remembering that I went through the
- 29:45Speaker 1: process sobbing, sobbing, crying, feeling humiliated, feeling like a failure,
- 29:51Speaker 1: like how oh I'm not good enough to be in
- 29:53Speaker 1: a relationship, to find a husband, to be with a husband,
- 29:56Speaker 1: you know, And everybody has an advice, Oh if you
- 29:59Speaker 1: just cook for them, just do this for them, if
- 30:01Speaker 1: you maybe lower your career, maybe saying oh main, maybe
- 30:04Speaker 1: maybe maybe you're smaller. Yeah, yeah, and by day it's
- 30:08Speaker 1: been small. I have been small. I know it doesn't
- 30:11Speaker 1: you know now you meet me today, But I was
- 30:13Speaker 1: small in relationships. I was very small in relation because
- 30:17Speaker 1: I just as long as he feels like I'm not
- 30:20Speaker 1: intimidating him, that's all. Those stupid words where it's like,
- 30:25Speaker 1: if you are not happy that I'm succeeding, then that's
- 30:28Speaker 1: not love. That is not love. That is control. That
- 30:32Speaker 1: is you wanting to keep your ego and touch and
- 30:35Speaker 1: and and I saw that very clearly. That was so
- 30:38Speaker 1: clear to me in many relationships I had, they wanted
- 30:41Speaker 1: to meet to be the queen, but their queen and
- 30:44Speaker 1: their castle and their roles. Yeah, a queen, but so yeah,
- 30:50Speaker 1: I guess I like to be both. I like to
- 30:52Speaker 1: be the queen and I like to be the maid.
- 30:53Speaker 1: You know, I want to have the freedom, So I
- 30:56Speaker 1: want to have the freedom to do the freedom. The
- 31:00Speaker 1: freedom that's it.
- 31:02Speaker 3: As you're someone who is you know, stunning and talented
- 31:08Speaker 3: with an intellect to manage three languages fluently, which is incredible.
- 31:13Speaker 3: I that's my I mean, I just I could pick
- 31:15Speaker 3: superpower be to be able to manage language as well.
- 31:18Speaker 3: I do not, but I but still, and then think
- 31:22Speaker 3: about how hard it was for you. And you know,
- 31:24Speaker 3: your parents might about I not have initially a rude
- 31:27Speaker 3: to what you did. They still supported you. It's not
- 31:29Speaker 3: like they abandoned ship. So it's I can imagine how
- 31:33Speaker 3: hard it is for women who have, don't have all
- 31:36Speaker 3: your talents and are in your position to choose that path,
- 31:40Speaker 3: and the fact that you know you did so publicly,
- 31:43Speaker 3: I just again, I just want to shout out to
- 31:47Speaker 3: how per how impactful that is. I think for women
- 31:51Speaker 3: to hear and to have these stories out there, and
- 31:54Speaker 3: and for you to be like, there are other options, ladies.
- 31:57Speaker 4: Yeah, true, Yeah, So you're thought was only three years old, right,
- 32:02Speaker 4: M So what are you gonna say to her when
- 32:06Speaker 4: she's old enough obviously to have this conversation with you?
- 32:09Speaker 4: What are you gonna teach her about womanhood?
- 32:11Speaker 1: What? What is your message to her?
- 32:13Speaker 4: I mean, your mom had a totally different path, So, uh,
- 32:17Speaker 4: how how big are you gonna flip this narrative?
- 32:19Speaker 1: So it's a great question. I think I would need
- 32:24Speaker 1: to be helped and guided because you know, it's it's
- 32:27Speaker 1: it's a fragile and sensitive topic and important one. But
- 32:32Speaker 1: she did one time and we were in bed and
- 32:34Speaker 1: she we have the most beautiful relationship. I was really like,
- 32:39Speaker 1: the most beautiful it's it's it's it's a love, like
- 32:43Speaker 1: I don't know, it's it's a it's a great, great,
- 32:45Speaker 1: great love. And I feel very lucky that I have that.
- 32:49Speaker 1: She So we were in bed cuddling and she's like, Mommy,
- 32:52Speaker 1: I wanted daddy. And then my heart stopped and I
- 32:55Speaker 1: said like, oh my god, what am I not giving her?
- 32:58Speaker 1: And then I said, no, let's ask I think what
- 33:01Speaker 1: I would give in this parent parenthood, you know, like
- 33:04Speaker 1: in this generation is to talk, is to allow her
- 33:07Speaker 1: to talk and not like every question is and not.
- 33:10Speaker 1: We will talk about everything and I'll just find the
- 33:13Speaker 1: way so she will never feel shy to tell me
- 33:16Speaker 1: anything or ask me anything. So then I said, what
- 33:18Speaker 1: would you like to do with this daddy? She's like,
- 33:21Speaker 1: I just want to play with him? And I said, oh, okay, play,
- 33:24Speaker 1: that's easy. I can solve that. You know, we could
- 33:26Speaker 1: do you could play with Uncle Steven and with Saba Moldy,
- 33:29Speaker 1: with my grandfather, with this friend and that friend. And
- 33:33Speaker 1: she was like, oh okay, yeah, so that wasn't that
- 33:37Speaker 1: was you know, that's step one. Then. Look, you know,
- 33:42Speaker 1: I think there's a lot of special situations in the
- 33:45Speaker 1: world and a lot of special you know, not everybody's
- 33:47Speaker 1: in the same box. You know, there's kids that are
- 33:50Speaker 1: in from homes that are divorced. There's kids that you know,
- 33:53Speaker 1: gay couples. There's kids that are special themselves, that they
- 33:56Speaker 1: have special needs kids, and all us parents need to
- 34:00Speaker 1: be to find a sensitive language to explain the differences.
- 34:06Speaker 1: So we have like beautiful books that you know, accept
- 34:09Speaker 1: of acceptance books. I love that stuff. I read it myself.
- 34:11Speaker 1: I'm like the magical words. I am a fantastic I
- 34:16Speaker 1: have a magnificence. It's like I'm reading it for myself.
- 34:19Speaker 1: You know, she wants to read like a grumpy monk.
- 34:22Speaker 1: I'm like, no, let's read this.
- 34:23Speaker 3: Let's read this book.
- 34:24Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, so you know, just from allowing like, look,
- 34:29Speaker 1: we were taught Cinderella. Yes, yeah, so I can teach
- 34:34Speaker 1: her a new story.
- 34:36Speaker 3: Yeah, and that's what we're doing.
- 34:37Speaker 1: We're teaching them new stories so they have new references.
- 34:41Speaker 1: There's not just one way.
- 34:43Speaker 2: You talked about how you answered that question. For I
- 34:46Speaker 2: know a lot of adoptive parents, you know, have a
- 34:49Speaker 2: conversation eventually with their children about like we adopted you
- 34:52Speaker 2: and with the story, right, do you have you thought
- 34:54Speaker 2: about how you're going to talk to your daughter about
- 34:58Speaker 2: how she came into the world when she is ready
- 35:00Speaker 2: to ask that question.
- 35:01Speaker 1: Or yeah, yeah, I mean not the birds We're not
- 35:05Speaker 1: a bird story, which I think is cute. I mean, look,
- 35:09Speaker 1: it's this is there's a time. I think there's a
- 35:11Speaker 1: time and a place for everything. Like, for example, there's
- 35:14Speaker 1: certain things that I don't want her to know about
- 35:17Speaker 1: the world, you know, like where we come from. It's
- 35:20Speaker 1: very intense for a child to even comprehend. So I
- 35:22Speaker 1: avoided those kind of conversations from her at this age.
- 35:25Speaker 1: But there will be a time obviously, Like I'm actually,
- 35:28Speaker 1: you know, he said my life should be a movie,
- 35:30Speaker 1: and I'm you know, I'm more into TV, so it
- 35:34Speaker 1: might be a show. Yeah, and in the show, you know,
- 35:38Speaker 1: season two or three, that is part of I'm still
- 35:41Speaker 1: single for every single I'm with a child, And there's
- 35:47Speaker 1: a lot of beautiful avenues to take that that storyline
- 35:52Speaker 1: into what do I tell and like does she want to? Look?
- 35:56Speaker 1: I mean, the whole process of choosing even the sperm
- 35:58Speaker 1: donor was like in three in it oh wow, literally
- 36:02Speaker 1: because I was I was in denied. I again, I
- 36:06Speaker 1: was just never admitting this will is going to be
- 36:09Speaker 1: my story. I was like, there's no way I'm going
- 36:10Speaker 1: to do this. No, no, no, no, no, this is
- 36:13Speaker 1: like this is a failure story. This is a you know,
- 36:15Speaker 1: the woman's that couldn't succeed. And then when I when
- 36:18Speaker 1: it its flipped in my head, how empowering, this is,
- 36:23Speaker 1: how lucky I am to even be in this position.
- 36:26Speaker 1: Then you know, I did the whole thing. And he's
- 36:32Speaker 1: very cute, but it was it was like panic choice,
- 36:38Speaker 1: like three minutes before they closed the lab. It was
- 36:40Speaker 1: just a safety, you know, just in case if I
- 36:42Speaker 1: don't get married with this guy, so I'll just have this.
- 36:46Speaker 1: And then three years later, I mean, Leo was in
- 36:49Speaker 1: the freezer for three years. Yeah.
- 36:52Speaker 4: So I heard you say that on your on your
- 36:55Speaker 4: Ted talk you. I thought it was really powerful when
- 36:58Speaker 4: you said I kept her quiet it yeah, and that yeah,
- 37:03Speaker 4: And so that's.
- 37:04Speaker 1: A generational thing that taught to be quiet and polite
- 37:08Speaker 1: and hushed and speak softly and speak quietly and speak
- 37:13Speaker 1: or not to speak. Yeah, I'm not smaller. Yeah. And
- 37:19Speaker 1: then I realized, like I was doing that to her.
- 37:21Speaker 1: That's what like I got to change this generational cycle
- 37:24Speaker 1: that has been on for my ancestors still today. And yeah,
- 37:29Speaker 1: I think she she talks by the way she talks,
- 37:32Speaker 1: she's a little My uncle calls her a chatterbox. I'm sure.
- 37:36Speaker 3: Yeah, three is super yummy.
- 37:39Speaker 1: It's such a fun that is funny.
- 37:42Speaker 3: Are you having children of the.
- 37:45Speaker 1: Okay mom, Mom, okay mom, I would love to. Yeah,
- 37:53Speaker 1: I think I would love you too. I got extremely lucky,
- 37:58Speaker 1: you know, and I think it's important to also talk. Yeah.
- 38:01Speaker 1: I know, we've only I've only heard stories about how
- 38:04Speaker 1: difficult it is. Most of the time. I've heard how
- 38:07Speaker 1: difficult it is, and how difficult it is to juggle,
- 38:09Speaker 1: and how difficult it's on the body. I have a
- 38:12Speaker 1: story that brings actually how amazing this is because Yeah,
- 38:15Speaker 1: the moment that my daughter went away for I mean
- 38:18Speaker 1: not she she didn't go away at all on her own.
- 38:20Speaker 1: She went to stay with my grand with her grandparents
- 38:22Speaker 1: for two weeks. So I had, you know, home alone,
- 38:25Speaker 1: back to being single completely, and I was like, hmmm, nope,
- 38:29Speaker 1: not the same, not better, like I had the possibility
- 38:34Speaker 1: to compare it to like no, no, no, this is
- 38:37Speaker 1: this brings I every morning. You know, there's nothing I'm
- 38:43Speaker 1: not very consistent because of the type of work I have.
- 38:45Speaker 1: You know, as an artist you're fluid and you change
- 38:48Speaker 1: and you transform. But the one consistent thing I have
- 38:51Speaker 1: every day that I wake up, I kiss her, and
- 38:53Speaker 1: I thank God for this gift every morning and every night,
- 38:57Speaker 1: like it's consistently I'm consistently grateful.
- 39:01Speaker 2: So well, enjoy it and enjoy every minute of it.
- 39:06Speaker 2: Well you can, because yeah we we my children have
- 39:11Speaker 2: grown grown. Yes, yeah, well, thank you so much, Moran.
- 39:15Speaker 2: So where can people see your work?
- 39:17Speaker 1: What what do we looking to? Yeah? So I think
- 39:21Speaker 1: the Ted Talk would be a great next piece of
- 39:25Speaker 1: material to watch. Me to watch this journey, you know,
- 39:28Speaker 1: article it better in like fourteen minutes. It's online, It's
- 39:31Speaker 1: on Ted on YouTube. And I did a beautiful show
- 39:35Speaker 1: that is going to come out soon called Joseph of Egypt.
- 39:38Speaker 1: It's a biblical show for Amazon. And the next project,
- 39:43Speaker 1: god willing, will be the project that I write myself,
