- 0:14Speaker 2: nine seven to three ESPN. Let's get into it now
- 0:18Speaker 2: with Adam Kaplan, NFL Insider, co host of the Inside
- 0:22Speaker 2: the Birds podcast. As it's already been an interesting week
- 0:29Speaker 2: for the Eagles and it's only Tuesday.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Adam, welcome in. How you doing today, Josh, I hope
- 0:35Speaker 1: you're doing well.
- 0:36Speaker 3: You know, it's funny. Last year we kind of made
- 0:38Speaker 3: fun of the Eagles with their low cash ben and
- 0:40Speaker 3: their cash ben is definitely up, there's no question about it.
- 0:43Speaker 3: But what they're doing is, Josh, they've signed a players.
- 0:46Speaker 3: This includes re signings in UFA from other teams. Every
- 0:50Speaker 3: single player got a one year deal. Just kind of
- 0:52Speaker 3: funny how that works out.
- 0:55Speaker 2: Yeah, it's always interesting the way the team always seems
- 0:59Speaker 2: to have a theme. I feel like, obviously, whenever I
- 1:00Speaker 2: listened to Inside the Birds pod, you and Jeff bring
- 1:02Speaker 2: up about how there's almost like a theme with the team.
- 1:05Speaker 2: So let's talk about first of all, to move today,
- 1:07Speaker 2: Adam Hollywood Brown, the former Chiefs and Ravens wide receiver.
- 1:13Speaker 2: He is now joining the Philadelphia Eagles. Let's talk about
- 1:15Speaker 2: him for a minute.
- 1:16Speaker 3: Yeah, so Holly Wood Brown was a first round pick
- 1:19Speaker 3: for the Ravens. And the thing that I find really
- 1:23Speaker 3: interesting about Hollywood Brown is he played two years at Oklahoma. Okay,
- 1:28Speaker 3: he was a first round pick in eight to twenty
- 1:31Speaker 3: nineteen for the Ravens and the average Josh, you know,
- 1:35Speaker 3: around eighteen yards for catch, but as a professional, it's
- 1:39Speaker 3: way down. It's honestly, I think it's more about who
- 1:43Speaker 3: he's played with than the player, because if you really
- 1:46Speaker 3: look at he was a big time speed receiver. Now
- 1:49Speaker 3: if you just look at his numbers for his career,
- 1:53Speaker 3: you go, we're in the explosive place. He's averaging less
- 1:55Speaker 3: than twelve yards per catch. It's hard to believe. I mean,
- 1:58Speaker 3: he he scored a touch downs, It's not like he
- 2:00Speaker 3: can't score. And he's got some red zone touchdowns, which
- 2:04Speaker 3: is interesting because he's a smaller guy. Now he runs
- 2:07Speaker 3: way better than his numbers would indicate. But you always
- 2:09Speaker 3: have to remember he wanted out of Baltimore because they
- 2:13Speaker 3: were at a running offense. And this is an infancy
- 2:16Speaker 3: of Lamar Jackson's career. Hollywood. Brown had one really good
- 2:22Speaker 3: year and ironically his last year in Baltimore, he had
- 2:25Speaker 3: over a thousand yards and the reason why he kind
- 2:28Speaker 3: of wanted to move on was he wanted to get
- 2:31Speaker 3: He wanted more pass targets, he wanted more catches, and
- 2:34Speaker 3: it was going to be the final yearis rookie deal.
- 2:36Speaker 3: Then he had his fifth year option. But what would
- 2:37Speaker 3: happen is he went to Arizona and the numbers just
- 2:40Speaker 3: plummeted because injuries, inconsistent passer, and it just didn't work out.
- 2:47Speaker 3: He was only there two years. He's with the Chiefs.
- 2:49Speaker 3: He got hurt, he got hurt two years ago, didn't
- 2:52Speaker 3: have a great year this past season, and that's why
- 2:55Speaker 3: he had to sign in one year deal. And I
- 2:56Speaker 3: give Howie Rosemand credit. He sees a guy that wants
- 3:00Speaker 3: to revive his career. Could play this game. He's got
- 3:02Speaker 3: to stay healthy. He's smaller, but he's explosive and there
- 3:06Speaker 3: was a reason why this guy's a fresh round pick.
- 3:08Speaker 3: And look, you could say what you want about Jalen
- 3:10Speaker 3: Hurts Josh. But one thing he can do he can
- 3:12Speaker 3: throw the deep.
- 3:13Speaker 2: Ball, absolutely, and Brown is the kind of receiver that
- 3:16Speaker 2: can go get that deep ball as well. The big
- 3:18Speaker 2: news from the weekend Adam Dallas Goddard is back in Philadelphia.
- 3:22Speaker 2: After pushing back that void Daton not once, but twice,
- 3:26Speaker 2: Goddard returns to Philadelphia and Adam, I think it's interesting
- 3:30Speaker 2: motion and IZOK about it yesterday as well. Goddard returns
- 3:33Speaker 2: for less money than he signed last year.
- 3:36Speaker 3: Yeah. I haven't got the full breakdown, but it's out there.
- 3:39Speaker 3: Seven million. Last year, he was scheduled to make fifteen
- 3:41Speaker 3: point twenty five million in total cash that's his salary, option,
- 3:45Speaker 3: bonuses and everything else. And he got a paycott to
- 3:48Speaker 3: exactly ten million. It is interesting, Josh, when you look
- 3:52Speaker 3: at at the Godter situation. We told our Patreon members
- 3:55Speaker 3: back when I was at the Super Bowl that I
- 3:57Speaker 3: was told two things about Dallas Goddard, which surprise me.
- 4:01Speaker 3: If he's back on the roster, they'll save a significant
- 4:03Speaker 3: mental cap space because of the void years. I was like, wow,
- 4:06Speaker 3: that's interesting. And two, he also wanted to be back.
- 4:09Speaker 3: And the only your point about them moving the void
- 4:12Speaker 3: date backed twice. It just shows you that he wanted
- 4:16Speaker 3: to be an ego. I know that he likes living here.
- 4:18Speaker 3: It might be also for family considerations, but the bottom
- 4:21Speaker 3: line is he's back. He's thirty one years old, which
- 4:23Speaker 3: you just turned in January, and it is interesting. Calcaterra's
- 4:28Speaker 3: back one year deal. Johnny Mont who is a West
- 4:30Speaker 3: Coast offensive tight ends specialist. He's only played in the
- 4:33Speaker 3: West Coast offense and that's what Eagles are going to run.
- 4:35Speaker 3: And Kim Lattu. They're all all their contracts will expire
- 4:38Speaker 3: after this season.
- 4:41Speaker 2: We're signing scores this offseason with Adam Kaplan Football and
- 4:44Speaker 2: four powered by the ends of the Inside the Bird podcast,
- 4:47Speaker 2: Inside the Birds dot Com, at Kaplin NFL on the
- 4:50Speaker 2: X platform. What might be the most underrated signing Adam
- 4:54Speaker 2: is punter Braden Mann, who has been a very valuable
- 4:58Speaker 2: player for them in recent years.
- 5:00Speaker 3: Yeah, you know it's you know, it's good about Braidon Man.
- 5:04Speaker 3: He basically became one of the best punters in the
- 5:08Speaker 3: National foota league with the Eagles, like he was with
- 5:09Speaker 3: the he was with the Jets. They didn't give him
- 5:13Speaker 3: much of a chance. Andrew de Ceko and I actually
- 5:15Speaker 3: interviewed him for a local radio show and he kind
- 5:18Speaker 3: of talked about his journey with the Jets, with the
- 5:21Speaker 3: Steelers where they didn't they couldn't decide what they wanted
- 5:24Speaker 3: to do with him, and then he got a chance
- 5:27Speaker 3: with the Eagles in twenty thirteen, twenty twenty three and
- 5:30Speaker 3: he kind of ran away with it. Now he's one
- 5:32Speaker 3: of the better punters in the league, and yeah, it's
- 5:34Speaker 3: a good story. Got a four year deal. He's twenty
- 5:37Speaker 3: eight years old. And this has been you know, the
- 5:40Speaker 3: Eagles remember back in their twenty two Super Bowl off
- 5:44Speaker 3: to problems with punters, and now they've got their bag.
- 5:46Speaker 2: For the future Adam on the Defts side of the ball.
- 5:49Speaker 2: The Eagles haven't done a time. But obviously the biggest
- 5:52Speaker 2: move that they made was the adding of Rieke Wollan,
- 5:55Speaker 2: who was a member of last year's Super Bowl champions.
- 5:59Speaker 3: Yeah, I like this one. Look, it's a little bit
- 6:01Speaker 3: of a gamble, but this is a guy who's got
- 6:04Speaker 3: a lot to prove. He needs to be coached up
- 6:08Speaker 3: by Roy Anderson, the cornerbacks coach, has done a really
- 6:10Speaker 3: good job here. Wolle was a guy that came on
- 6:13Speaker 3: out of ut I think it's ut. San Antonio just
- 6:18Speaker 3: was terrific his first season, where it made people around
- 6:22Speaker 3: the league kind of wonder like, why was this guy?
- 6:24Speaker 3: Now I know he's a former receiver, but why was
- 6:27Speaker 3: this guy only a fifth front pick? Well, then you
- 6:29Speaker 3: would find out your three. The regression started, and this
- 6:32Speaker 3: season they made him. This past season, the Seahawks made
- 6:35Speaker 3: him pretty available to trade. They want to trade him
- 6:37Speaker 3: if they could have got what they wanted. They were
- 6:38Speaker 3: more than open. I'm told to trading them, and they
- 6:41Speaker 3: didn't and woud up being a super Bowl champion. So
- 6:43Speaker 3: the thing with him is while he's a fluid athlete,
- 6:47Speaker 3: the lack of discipline, it's very handsy. Too many penalties,
- 6:53Speaker 3: gives up plays, makes plays. He's just got it. He
- 6:56Speaker 3: seemed pretty confident and I talk with the media here,
- 6:59Speaker 3: but he's got to be coached up. And he said,
- 7:02Speaker 3: another guy's on a one year deal. He's on a
- 7:04Speaker 3: high end, proven deal. He'll make twelve million this season
- 7:06Speaker 3: or up side of fifteen. It's a gamble. There's no
- 7:10Speaker 3: question they forgot Jonathan Jones, formerly of the the Commandos
- 7:14Speaker 3: and the Patriots, two times Super Bowl champion, who's an
- 7:17Speaker 3: undirected free agent many years ago. He's near the end
- 7:19Speaker 3: of his career, but this guy knows how to play.
- 7:22Speaker 3: He'll be their third corner and that's the way that
- 7:24Speaker 3: they see him.
- 7:25Speaker 2: One of the more interesting guys they signed Adam is
- 7:28Speaker 2: arld Ebikite.
- 7:29Speaker 1: This is a guy who you know he was.
- 7:31Speaker 2: He was an okay player at Temple, but then he
- 7:33Speaker 2: got de penn See and he blew up. That's a
- 7:35Speaker 2: big reason why he got drafted where he got drafted
- 7:38Speaker 2: years ago, and from what I understand, he was somebody
- 7:40Speaker 2: of the Eagles looked closely.
- 7:41Speaker 1: I joined the draft process.
- 7:43Speaker 3: Yeah, they brought him in for a pre draft visit
- 7:45Speaker 3: and look, you know he played locally at Temple, then
- 7:49Speaker 3: at Penn State for a season, so they knew the
- 7:51Speaker 3: player very well. But he's a third edged rusher. That's
- 7:55Speaker 3: he's never been a full time starter two different coaching
- 7:57Speaker 3: staffs at Atlanta. Slim As at DPR, which is designated Thrushure.
- 8:00Speaker 3: He's good at it. But josh As we continue to
- 8:03Speaker 3: tell people how he's looking to make that big move
- 8:05Speaker 3: at edge, whether it's in the first round of the draft,
- 8:08Speaker 3: whether it's in the trade. He's still looking at it
- 8:10Speaker 3: they gave away the answers to the test. They wanted
- 8:12Speaker 3: Jalen Phillips back. That would have paid him probably twenty
- 8:14Speaker 3: five million or more, but the Panthers blew everyone out
- 8:17Speaker 3: of the water. Two years sixty million, fully guaranteed he'll
- 8:21Speaker 3: make eighty million over the first three years. Of fact,
- 8:23Speaker 3: he's almost certain to see that eighty million. Jalen Phillips
- 8:26Speaker 3: is because if he's on the roster of the fifth
- 8:31Speaker 3: day free agency next year, it means they're going to
- 8:33Speaker 3: guarantee twenty million in a year three. So it's an
- 8:36Speaker 3: unbelievable contract. I could see why the Eagles didn't do.
- 8:38Speaker 1: That one absolutely, Adam.
- 8:40Speaker 2: He mentioned John Phillips, other players they lost in free agency.
- 8:44Speaker 2: The one day I find the most interesting, and we
- 8:46Speaker 2: can go through cover more and less than this, But
- 8:49Speaker 2: I find the departure of Sam how interesting because you know,
- 8:54Speaker 2: there were all these theories out there of like, hey,
- 8:56Speaker 2: you know, what do the Eagles do with the backup
- 8:59Speaker 2: quarterback long term? Tanner McKee is still here and they
- 9:02Speaker 2: acquired how last year right before the season started, and
- 9:06Speaker 2: that was.
- 9:06Speaker 3: Because of the Tanadera mccaye broken finger. Now you go
- 9:09Speaker 3: to Dallas and Sam Howe is a quality backup quarterback. Yeah,
- 9:14Speaker 3: he should be able to beat out Joe Milton for
- 9:16Speaker 3: the two job. Joe Milton's got major accuracy issues. He's
- 9:18Speaker 3: got a big arm. But just I saw at the
- 9:21Speaker 3: Super Bowl and there's a reason why New Orleans drafts them.
- 9:24Speaker 3: Then they trade him after one year. They knew what
- 9:26Speaker 3: they were dealing with. And Sam How's a pretty good athlete,
- 9:28Speaker 3: just not a tall guy. He's he's a gunslinger. I
- 9:31Speaker 3: would I would expect him to win that job to
- 9:34Speaker 3: be Dak Prescott's back him. By the way, Prescott's had
- 9:37Speaker 3: a big injury history.
- 9:38Speaker 1: Absolutely another guy.
- 9:40Speaker 2: The Eagles lost its off season and I'm not saying
- 9:43Speaker 2: it is literally this, but the departure of Brett Toath
- 9:47Speaker 2: and Matt Pryor. How much do you think Adam that
- 9:50Speaker 2: had something to do with the issues last year with
- 9:53Speaker 2: the offensive line depth.
- 9:55Speaker 3: Well, Matt Pryor just didn't do a good job at
- 9:57Speaker 3: Brett Toath. That second Giant game that he had that
- 10:02Speaker 3: was at home against the Giants was he was tremendous,
- 10:04Speaker 3: the best ball of his career, and that got him
- 10:06Speaker 3: a free agent contract with the Niners. The Eagles right
- 10:10Speaker 3: now have a real big problem. They have no death
- 10:12Speaker 3: on the offensive line in terms of guys who've played before,
- 10:14Speaker 3: So they need to address that. We expect them to
- 10:17Speaker 3: dress that. They don't have to do it now, but
- 10:19Speaker 3: by the time they get to training camp, they've got
- 10:21Speaker 3: to have two veterans in here.
- 10:23Speaker 2: Speaking of guys who were on signed, what about Fred
- 10:25Speaker 2: Johnson to return?
- 10:27Speaker 3: Yeah, he's still out there quality backup. You know, you
- 10:30Speaker 3: don't want him starting more than four or five games
- 10:32Speaker 3: and it becomes a problem. But yeah, he could play
- 10:35Speaker 3: right tackle, left tackle. He's still out there. They when
- 10:38Speaker 3: I look at my free agent file, Josh, of the
- 10:40Speaker 3: best available guys who were out there on the street
- 10:43Speaker 3: at tackle, he's probably other than Kelvin Beachum. It's more
- 10:47Speaker 3: of a right tackle than left. James Hudson could play both.
- 10:51Speaker 3: Joseph Knopp noteboom. Now what you have to understand though,
- 10:54Speaker 3: Fred Johnson's best ball as a backup? What four Jeff Stalin,
- 10:58Speaker 3: who's no longer the Eagles offensive line coach? Odd to
- 11:00Speaker 3: say that, Josh, It's just that's the thing. We don't
- 11:04Speaker 3: know with Chris Cooper what he likes. Now that we
- 11:07Speaker 3: know this scheme is going to change and they're probably
- 11:10Speaker 3: gonna want to get better athletes than Fred Johnson.
- 11:14Speaker 2: Another guy who's unsigned right now. He's a restricted free agent.
- 11:18Speaker 2: The ben Bean Szumer thing fascinates me at it because
- 11:21Speaker 2: you and Jeff have talked about on the Inside Birds
- 11:22Speaker 2: podcast that he was supposed to be a part of
- 11:25Speaker 2: this offense as a fullback and then he got injured
- 11:28Speaker 2: the first play of the season, and you could argue
- 11:31Speaker 2: that that probably changed a lot of things for the
- 11:33Speaker 2: Eagles offense.
- 11:35Speaker 3: Well him and him and Johnny Wilson. Johnny Wilson have
- 11:38Speaker 3: the devastating knee injury. So event Sumer, because he suffered
- 11:42Speaker 3: yet another bad injury, was not tendered as fully expected
- 11:45Speaker 3: as a restricted free agent, so's he could sign anywhere
- 11:48Speaker 3: he wants now. A J. Dillon's out. A J. Dillon
- 11:51Speaker 3: I don't see returning. I mean it would make no sense.
- 11:53Speaker 3: They have a full backfield, they need a need one
- 11:55Speaker 3: more back. But aj joat can find a better role elsewhere,
- 11:59Speaker 3: and that would be it for offense.
- 12:01Speaker 1: And then on defense.
- 12:03Speaker 2: Adam a guy that I think a lot of people
- 12:04Speaker 2: are curious about, would be Branding Graham, who says he
- 12:09Speaker 2: wants to return.
- 12:10Speaker 1: He says he wants to keep playing.
- 12:12Speaker 2: Could this be situation like last year where he's kind
- 12:15Speaker 2: of waiting in the wings break last the case of.
- 12:17Speaker 3: Emergency exactly, they don't need They could wait till trading camp.
- 12:20Speaker 3: They don't need to do anything. First of all, they
- 12:21Speaker 3: have to see what they're going to do for to
- 12:24Speaker 3: replace Jalen Phillips. We'll be a trade, We'll be the draft. Well,
- 12:28Speaker 3: if they add a significant piece, it'll be it. VG
- 12:33Speaker 3: would be out of luck because unless they trade Nolan
- 12:35Speaker 3: Smith because Nolan Smith hunt Ebaghetti and that fourth guy
- 12:40Speaker 3: that I'm talking about, that that new guy would I'm
- 12:41Speaker 3: talking about if they make a big move, that that
- 12:43Speaker 3: guy would be starting. So they had four edges and
- 12:46Speaker 3: they like to take a They'd like to take a
- 12:47Speaker 3: look at Jose Ramirez, who is a draftee of the Bucks,
- 12:51Speaker 3: who is a mac player Defensive Player of the Year
- 12:53Speaker 3: for one year, had one big, real big year at
- 12:55Speaker 3: Eastern Michigan, who's been playing the CFL. So yeah, there
- 12:58Speaker 3: just wouldn't be room for him. And and Fangio is interesting.
- 13:01Speaker 3: He really only likes to play. Free agency. Did the
- 13:03Speaker 3: same thing with the Niners during their Super Bowl a
- 13:05Speaker 3: run in twenty twelve.
- 13:08Speaker 2: For more coverage of the Eagles, check out the Inside

- 13:17Speaker 2: we won't talk to you again this week, so enjoy
- 13:19Speaker 2: the rest of your week, all right.
- 13:22Speaker 3: Man, be well. Thanks,
