- 0:00Speaker 1: It's been a busy day for our rowers, the Kei
- 0:02Speaker 1: we four.
- 0:03Speaker 2: This is the the women have taken out a bronze
- 0:08Speaker 2: medal overnight on the squad. Kerry Williams and his sister
- 0:12Speaker 2: Jackie Gowler the Kiwis, were placed fourth in the last
- 0:15Speaker 2: one thousand meters, surging past Romania in a push for
- 0:18Speaker 2: the finish line. Netherlands or Great Britain to the line.
- 0:22Speaker 2: It's the Netherlands, Great Britain and New Zealand bronze medal.
- 0:30Speaker 1: Not Romanian at all?
- 0:31Speaker 3: Was it?
- 0:31Speaker 2: That was the gold race? Joining me now is Olympic
- 0:33Speaker 2: rowert Kerrie Williams. Carey, good morning and congratulations, thank you.
- 0:39Speaker 1: Yeah, how does it feel?
- 0:42Speaker 3: It's pretty special? I think I think it hasn't really
- 0:46Speaker 3: sunk in. We're kind of just out of the hotel,
- 0:48Speaker 3: which is unfamiliar to us at the moment. But yeah,
- 0:51Speaker 3: it's pretty it's pretty cool. It was a cool day
- 0:53Speaker 3: for rowing.
- 0:54Speaker 1: Are you in a car full of medals?
- 0:57Speaker 3: I am in a car full of medals.
- 1:00Speaker 1: Who's in there? Who's in there with you? How many
- 1:02Speaker 1: metals are you holding?
- 1:05Speaker 3: Well? We have the woman's double gold medalists and the
- 1:09Speaker 3: woman's four fantastic. That sex medals.
- 1:16Speaker 1: What a great day for New Zealand rowing.
- 1:20Speaker 3: Yeah, it's pretty incredible. I'm so proud of the team
- 1:24Speaker 3: and it's really cool to be a part of and it.
- 1:26Speaker 2: Made extra special obviously because you're in the boat with
- 1:29Speaker 2: your sister Jackie, right, yeah, yeah.
- 1:33Speaker 3: Yeah, that is pretty cool to be lining up with
- 1:37Speaker 3: her and to get on the podium.
- 1:40Speaker 1: How did the race go? How did you find it?
- 1:42Speaker 1: It was? It was obviously a bit of a sprint
- 1:44Speaker 1: at the end there, as it always is.
- 1:47Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, it was. Yeah, the race was they said
- 1:51Speaker 3: a pretty hot pace the leading crews, so we had
- 1:54Speaker 3: a bit of work to get back in the race.
- 1:56Speaker 3: And then we've sort of always said you don't want
- 1:58Speaker 3: to end up in a romain and sprint to the furnish,
- 2:01Speaker 3: and that's where we ended up, but where you came
- 2:04Speaker 3: out on the right side. So that's bloody good.
- 2:08Speaker 2: It's more than bloody good. It's fantastic. So I was
- 2:11Speaker 2: counting your metals up this morning. So you've got a
- 2:13Speaker 2: gold from the pair at Tokyo, you've got an h sorry,
- 2:19Speaker 2: a silver from the eight, and now a bronze and
- 2:21Speaker 2: the four.
- 2:22Speaker 1: If I got that right, that the clean sweep.
- 2:25Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, that one of each.
- 2:29Speaker 2: Tell me about your journey to get to these games.
- 2:31Speaker 2: Because you had a year off, right, what was that for?
- 2:34Speaker 2: And did you did you think you would come back?
- 2:37Speaker 2: Was that always the goal?
- 2:40Speaker 3: If I'm honest, I didn't think i'd come back. I
- 2:43Speaker 3: needed a break. And then I sort of thought that's
- 2:49Speaker 3: not like it's not the ideal time to have a
- 2:51Speaker 3: year off and like a qualification year, but a year
- 2:54Speaker 3: out from these games, I sort of started to be like,
- 2:58Speaker 3: I think I want to be there and and I
- 3:01Speaker 3: don't know if it's too late, And so I just
- 3:03Speaker 3: started training again and here I am.
- 3:06Speaker 2: So what's the lesson we can all learn from that?
- 3:08Speaker 2: Just don't give up, go back to it, keep going
- 3:10Speaker 2: if you've got more in the tank.
- 3:13Speaker 3: Yeah, I think so. I think it was just I
- 3:15Speaker 3: could have. I could have I guess said no, it's
- 3:18Speaker 3: too late, but I thought I'd give it a crack anyway.
- 3:20Speaker 3: And it's paid off. So and it's been really cool.
- 3:24Speaker 3: I've really enjoyed it.
- 3:25Speaker 1: Are your parents there watching you? Girls?
- 3:28Speaker 3: Yeah? Yeah, the whole family's here.
- 3:30Speaker 1: Oh fantastic. Well go and enjoy it.
- 3:32Speaker 2: You're you're in a car full of six medals, which
- 3:35Speaker 2: is which is great for as I said, great for rowing,
- 3:38Speaker 2: but also great for New Zealand. We're very proud of you.
- 3:40Speaker 2: And we've still got Emma to go. Tomorrow is Saturday,
- 3:44Speaker 2: I think, isn't it.
- 3:46Speaker 3: Yeap, Yeah, we have the lightweight double tomorrow and Emma
- 3:49Speaker 3: and tom on Saturday.
- 3:51Speaker 1: So we're going to get more gold, don't we.
- 3:53Speaker 3: Yeah, for sure.
- 3:55Speaker 1: Kerry Williams, congratulations and thanks for your time.
- 3:58Speaker 3: Thank you very much.
