- 0:00SPEAKER_00: To receive anything takes humility.
- 0:04SPEAKER_00: Pride is the belief that I am self-sufficient,
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: that no one tells me what to do that I get to decide.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: And humility means receiving from those who know more than I do.
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: Chesterton called tradition the democracy of the dead.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: He said, why should we limit the vote to only those who happen to be alive?
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: His point was there's a much larger community.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: There's a much larger reality that we're a part of.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: And that's the tradition.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: That's all these people that have gone before us.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: I say all this because after the prayers of consecration,
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: as we celebrate the Eucharist,
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: there's an interesting little phrase, which is the mystery of the faith.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: They re-translated the Mass not that long ago because in
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: the first English translation, it said, this is the mystery of the faith.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: And that was followed by this acclamation.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: And so it made sense for us to think that the acclamation was what those words referred to.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: This is the mystery of the faith.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: When we eat this bread and drink this cup, et cetera, something like that.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: No, this little phrase,
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: the mystery of the faith is an ancient part of our liturgy,
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: but nobody really knows why it's there, what it means or to what it refers.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: And that's the curious thing about tradition, right?
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: The curious thing about tradition is that we receive things from those who have gone
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: before us without necessarily understanding why,
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: but we are called to enter into them.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: And these words in particular,
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: the mystery of the faith,
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: are words that require us to enter into and even include that word mystery.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: In the liturgy doesn't mean what we think it means, right?
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: When we think mystery,
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: we think like maybe a novel or a book or something that has something
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: that isn't known, something that's trying to be discovered.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: That's not exactly what the church means by mystery, mysterion.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: Mystery means something that can only be understood with the help of God.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: So maybe mystical might be a better word for that.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: And so this little expression that we have right in the middle of
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: the Eucharistic prayer,
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: in the middle of our liturgy, is referring to this full action that we're doing.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: And it's saying that we can only understand this by faith.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: We can only understand this with the help of God.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: When we make that affirmation after the consecration,
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: we can only understand that this is Jesus' body and blood with faith.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: We need faith to enter into this.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: This is something that goes beyond our understanding.
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: And so this little expression,
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: and even what we do in the liturgy,
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: is inviting us to walk by faith and not by sight.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: When Christ becomes bread and wine,
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: when bread and wine become the body and blood of Christ, there's an illumination.
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: Christ is showing us that this bread and this wine This bread
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: and this wine have become the body of Jesus Christ.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: But we need to take that attitude to everything that we do in life because
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: the entire world,
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: everything around us,
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: every person we encounter is an expression of God's love for us,
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: is an expression of God's will for us.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: The attitude of being before a mystery, of contemplating it, Of asking what is going on.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: Of seeing through everything.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: That's something that the liturgy wants to begin.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: But it's not something that stops at the end of the liturgy.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: If we are honest, this is our life.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: And we need to take this attitude,
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: take this way of seeing and this way of being to our daily lives.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: So that we can start to experience this all around us if we slow down,
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: open our eyes and see the mystery of reality in which we live.
