- 0:00Congratulations Victor, although it's making me feel sick.
- 0:04Everything in South Africa is just perfect, we're loving rugby, it's getting great,
- 0:08the coaches are the best coaches in the world, the difference between South Africa winning
- 0:12the championship and us winning the championship was 20 minutes in the sick and half in Wellington.
- 0:17I think Ireland is starting to fall away a little bit, I think England will probably be a
- 0:22tougher test match but France I think it's going to be very difficult for South Africa to go
- 0:27and beat them in France. I want South Africa to win every single game
- 0:31and I want New Zealand to win every single game.
- 0:38Welcome to Rugby Rivals for another week where Victor is going to tell us about why he's a champion.
- 0:44A double champion, double World Cup and double rugby champion champion.
- 0:49Yeah, I must say I'm very happy for the box, I don't think it was our base performance,
- 0:55actually probably one of our worst performances in the rugby championship but it's always
- 1:02difficult. I think especially after a week like the previous one in Durban where you really put
- 1:08a team away just to get the intensity back up, to get the commitment there and also I think you
- 1:14start off thinking everything is going to be easy and then you make a lot of mistakes and
- 1:19yeah hard to get it back but again that only needed to win the game and that's what they did.
- 1:25Why is that hard? Surely you go into a game with a lot of confidence, a lot of self-belief,
- 1:30you just come up that team. Why is it always you're always saying it's hard for South Africa to
- 1:35double up like that? Yeah, I think because you need to start from zero again and if you look at
- 1:42that first half I mean we had two, three great line breaks and then just forcing the boss a little
- 1:48bit where if that expectation is not on you you can just go out play your game, put the pressure on
- 1:55when the score comes it comes. When you've just put the team away it's almost like in the back of
- 1:59your mind that you have to beat them by the same or better again and I think sometimes you just
- 2:04overplay your end, you just force things, you don't have the patience so yeah it's just difficult.
- 2:13Yeah I think it's a combination Ricardo so you know if you think about the spring box and
- 2:20congratulations Victor although it's you know making me feel sick telling you congratulations because
- 2:27it makes me feel sick because we wanted to win the championship and we wanted to stop you getting
- 2:32another record but that didn't happen and look to be fair you thoroughly deserved it. I think there
- 2:37was 40 minutes in the all blacks that they'll probably regret for a long time and you know when
- 2:43you talk about you know the difference between two weeks winning an Eden Park, winning pretty well
- 2:49I thought spring box played well we played well and then getting pumped in that second half.
- 2:54So I think Ricardo answered your question, there's a whole lot of different things, there's
- 2:58there's the physical sides way more as well like you know sometimes coaches tend to overdo it when
- 3:05they're worried about the team getting up so they might over train the team and so there's a
- 3:10whole lot of different things like you're a competitor Ricardo, in fact you're a annoying competitor
- 3:15right, you've always been like that, the people don't know Ricardo was my captain,
- 3:20psyched to look at his fat ass as a number eight when I was playing first 15 rugby as a halfback.
- 3:27You imagine what you're like when you lose and like this Argentinian sides are really good
- 3:31side they're really proud side like Victor's mentioned this before, some of their attack is
- 3:37absolutely amazing like even in their last at Trickenham they did some amazing things on attack
- 3:44so they're a proud nation so you imagine when New Zealand or South Africa lose the following week
- 3:49we're going to be up and we're going to be really annoyed and so we're going to perform and I
- 3:56thought the Argentinians had performed right across this championship and they're not a team to take
- 4:00lightly so they would have come off the they would have been disappointed with their loss
- 4:05you know in in South Africa and they go to London and they wanted to prove a point again
- 4:11South Africa were probably 2.3% off you know I've talked to a lot of people about the about the
- 4:17about the all black performance and everyone's talking about oh it's this and it's that but it also
- 4:21could be physical when you come off Eden Park there's a massive mental drain you might over train
- 4:26there's a whole lot of different scenarios that go on and I think at this level the difference
- 4:30is like 2 to 3% like the difference between South Africa winning the championship and us winning
- 4:34the championship was 20 minutes in the second half in Wellington right and a couple of moments
- 4:41and those moments change the game at this level so for me retrospective it's just been a great
- 4:48championship it's been a great competition I think Argentina have been outstanding I think Australia
- 4:54are way better side so South Africa and New Zealand have been put to the put to the pump like
- 5:00you know and it's that's how you want the championship to be and long may it live long that
- 5:06level long may we bring on the Northern tour because now what we've got to do is go over and prove
- 5:11to the Northern Hemisphere that we are still the best competition in the world hey hey y'all
- 5:17the thing that people don't remember is there's two teams on the field I mean we're definitely not
- 5:2330 points better than New Zealand so to go out next week and play against them the chance of
- 5:27beating them by 30 won't happen I think it's just in the game where there's one or two moments
- 5:34you take those opportunity and in a game someone can just fall away all day there same thing
- 5:39against Argentina I don't think we a team that will beat them every week by 30 40 points it's just
- 5:45on the day we were good they went as good they made mistakes then they're going to a next game
- 5:50probably don't believe they can win so they actually just want to keep the score low
- 5:54and then it's much harder to put that big corner teams so there's always two teams on the field
- 5:59and like Jacob is saying I think these four teams are really close to each other and it was a
- 6:07fantastic rugby championship and I mean actually before last week we were talking about the
- 6:13expectation of New Zealand fans I mean everything in South Africa is just perfect we loving
- 6:18rugby it's going great the coaches are the best coaches in the world the players we've got
- 6:23depth I mean if you look at New Zealand they also got 19 points same as us in the rugby championship
- 6:29and they worried is it the right coach do they have the right players oh yeah I just think
- 6:34expectations in New Zealand is so much higher than anywhere else in the world I think with this
- 6:39team we're getting there with the springbox as well and yeah I think it was a fantastic
- 6:45rugby championship it's great that Argentina is performing it's great that Australia is back
- 6:50and yeah it's actually a pity there won't be a rugby championship next year
- 6:55do you think jk did the all blacks meet your expectations against Australia
- 7:01yeah we beat them twice and we kept the blitters low cut when we kept the even pack alive so yeah of
- 7:06course well those are results but I wanted to beat South Africa just he doesn't want to talk about
- 7:15I think that there's one of the base performances of the all blacks especially that's taken off
- 7:20I thought Australia probably had them a bit under under wraps in the first off and I thought
- 7:28Australia could have lead going into half time but I really enjoyed what I saw of the all blacks
- 7:33in that second off they played a clever game they kept Australia out of the game I left those
- 7:39little kicks in behind on the front foot running onto the ball so I thought the second off the
- 7:45all blacks was really good for me if I can just get back if I can just get back to the conversation
- 7:51I think I'll start with yours Victor and then I'll go back to your question Ricardo because New
- 7:56Zealand is naturally questioned everything when we lose so the reason why we're a little bit
- 8:03concerned is we're a little bit concerned about and this is a whole bunch of x rugby guys getting
- 8:08to get Victor right so this is and then people stopping me in the airport so when our schoolboy
- 8:14side gets bashed up by Aussie we're now under 20s lose the world cup in to South Africa
- 8:22again we start saying what is what is our yeah thank you for throwing that in Raqqa
- 8:28thank you it's very very good you just throw those little bombs in but I ask questions okay
- 8:36because we want to win everything and and I'm okay with that so when we lose that schoolboy game
- 8:44we've lost the under 20s over the summer and our team is probably not performing how the country
- 8:50want I think it's right that we question what is our high performance doing you know I firmly believe
- 8:56that when you as traitor South African people that you are and you left us from super rugby for money
- 9:02you money hungry South African people it had a real effect on super rugby I don't think super
- 9:10rugby now prepares us for the rugby at the highest level I firmly believe that so we question a lot
- 9:19we question a lot and I think that's a good thing are people listening who knows getting back to
- 9:25your question Ricardo as an all black you always want to get better right so did the all blacks get
- 9:31better over the championship and my my challenge to us as all blacks is we're probably still struggling
- 9:39with a little bit of inconsistency I believe with Victor I believe what Victor said I think that
- 9:43was our best performance I think we were put under pressure against Australia and we held
- 9:50strong our kicking game was really good I think I'm a big believer in combinations and I don't
- 9:55know what you're like Victor but you know being a back I think when you see when you see Jordi freed
- 10:02up a wee bit and he starts putting little kicks in it means that the combination that he had with
- 10:08Quintu Pai was a good combination is our loose forward combination the right one yet you know we saw
- 10:16we saw Ardi probably a little bit quiet is that the game plan or is he just having a flat moment I
- 10:23mean this is our world's best carrier of the ball so I think rightly New Zealand got better over
- 10:29the championship but inconsistency cost us that inconsistency in the second half against South
- 10:35Africa and the inconsistency of not getting up like South Africa what was the difference we played
- 10:40Argentina one week and we smashed them we played really well in wherever it was Kodoba and then we
- 10:44lost the next week in Buenos Aires whereas this South African team are just a little bit of a head of
- 10:51us with consistency right and that won them the competition so I think it's okay to question Victor
- 10:58we were like we've lost two world cups mate you know and I know you're going to keep reminding me
- 11:03that we've just lost two champions in my row and if you're a kiwi that's not good enough and I
- 11:06think we should look in the mirror and say it's not good enough I just I just think the time of
- 11:13New Zealand being the number one team in the world dominating having 85 plus percent it's going
- 11:19to be hard to stay at that level I think because everyone is just closer I think if you look at the
- 11:25four top teams South Africa New Zealand I'll say Ireland and France I think when they play each other
- 11:3210 times it will be very close to 50-50 beating each other it won't be like in the old days where
- 11:37New Zealand were 90 percent and the other guys fight to win one on two and I've got no problem with
- 11:42that mate and I think that's good thing for rugby like we need the world cup of rugby to get better
- 11:47and better like the world cup of soccer I mean it's Italy who I'm passionate about can't even qualify
- 11:53for the world cup the last soccer world cup right so I agree with you I understand what you're saying
- 12:00but I still think that as kiwis we question so for me the all blacks at this in this moment
- 12:08traveling well I really enjoyed that we've got some young players coming in we changed the football
- 12:13team on the weekend victor which is we haven't done right yeah we put Quinnon you know we we
- 12:21changed a few of the players some of them through injuries and so I think that's a that's a really
- 12:25good thing I think for us I'm not Christian in the all blacks I'm questioning is our high performance
- 12:33and our competitions preparing our team to have a winning percentage as high as it should be so
- 12:41so what seems to come through is that South Africans are eternally optimistic and New Zealanders
- 12:47are eternally pessimistic so that's good so we've established that we're a miserable race we're
- 12:52not happy with everything in South Africa just celebrates everything Rick just wait I mean after
- 12:58the one loss against Australia at Alice Park it was chaos in South Africa as well if we lost
- 13:04another one in Cape Town it was like will they fire us here I mean after he was won two world cups so
- 13:09I think both nations the expectation is very high but I think the expectation with New Zealand
- 13:15is just a little bit higher than what we we've got in South Africa with both of us when ever
- 13:21to whenever you go to South Africa they always ask you the question what do you think of our beautiful
- 13:26country like you know you just can't answer that with anything other than oh it's beautiful
- 13:32and I think that's the beautiful thing about South Africans who was your we'll start with you Victor
- 13:36who were the two players in the rugby championship that impressed you the most I think firstly
- 13:45I'm not going to call us South African as a firstly from Australia I think Wilson their captain is just
- 13:52an outstanding rugby player the way he led that team every time they were under pressure
- 13:58he kind of stood up just his lines he run the almost makes me think of Owen Finnegan of old we just
- 14:05he runs the right time at the right moment give momentum to his team and when there's a big play
- 14:11he's normally the one that steps up so he was pretty outstanding for me and then in the South African
- 14:16team I think the performance of Sasha in that urban game and even this weekend in that first
- 14:24off he's a special player and I think he's going to do special things for South Africa
- 14:29Jake aye I will skeleton I thought was unbelievable as I wasn't happy that he left the field because
- 14:37I'd never like seeing a player leave the field but he started the game on the weekend by like
- 14:43pushing Adi in the face and annoying people and I just thought his physical presence
- 14:48specially against South Africa early was just a thing to behold like any carried the team with him
- 14:55with a bit of belief so I thought he was outstanding and unfortunately he wasn't around the whole
- 15:01time and this is this is this is an argument around southern hemisphere this is northern hemisphere
- 15:07and where all the money is right I think Sasha was unbelievable like he is he is like you know I think
- 15:16of Dan Carter and you know Grant Fox and Johnny Wilkinson had a baby to be him you know he seems
- 15:25to have everything because athleticism is amazing is acceleration is amazing you know it takes a
- 15:32lot of courage for the modern player just to read what's in front of them and I don't know what
- 15:36the structure is but I know Brownie pretty well you know from a from a attack coaching point of
- 15:42you and this kids just playing with incredible confidence and that's hard to do when you're young
- 15:46man and when you live in South Africa or New Zealand right so for me so for me that's been that's
- 15:53been really good I think we haven't had we haven't had anyone in the all blacks that's new that
- 16:00sort of stood up and and played played like you think wow like you know Wallace Satiti last year
- 16:07was was amazing I think to poor Vi I've really enjoyed his ability to play from from six and seven
- 16:15I'm sad that he's probably going to be out for the season so I've really enjoyed him coming into
- 16:20a leadership role so for me you guys will just need to work on his celebrations it feels like he's
- 16:28playing in in the UK for Sarasins with all these celebrations yeah and I agree with that I think
- 16:35that's yeah I do agree with that I thought we're both a little bit old school around that I don't
- 16:39like those little celebrations I don't mind when you score a try and then I thought Cam Roy guard
- 16:45coming back into the side you know we've always had two types of halfback we've always had the
- 16:52you know the the halfback so that's like a third loose forward you know really like a Justin Marshall
- 16:58or you know when I played it was you know Andrew Donald old shuffles we used to call him
- 17:03and then you've got guys like you know the clerical you've got far from you've got far from you
- 17:09got you know Aaron Smith where they're just great passes and great rounder and annoying little
- 17:15people whereas I think Cam Roy guard's got a combination he's that big guy he you know you wouldn't
- 17:21want to defend around the ruck when when you're tired because he you know he's just going to have a
- 17:25go so having him back has been like a revelation and I think I think what you need to realise to
- 17:32win world cups and to have to win championships and I know VickDee of one two in a row is
- 17:3919 combination is fundamental so your 19 combination is really important for me I just want to go
- 17:46back on that comment if you say Justin Marshall was a force loose force like playing I love it never
- 17:54seen him in a break time maybe Brian Byron Keller but Justin were more the guy putting everyone
- 18:01away I think actually can I can I mention the players is that is that okay with you too
- 18:06if you can ask yourself the same question have your say or the player that really impressed me
- 18:14just because of the way he just took to test rugby was Eroi Carter I thought that he very quickly
- 18:20became one of our best players he his work rate was incredible his confidence from the moment
- 18:26he stepped on the park was amazing like he was born to play test rugby and you know he was
- 18:32always trying to take people on I was just so impressed with him that so quickly he could become
- 18:38one of our best players super starman he's a super star that boy did you and I just agreed on
- 18:44something yeah first on the 30 years yeah so let's move on I think and that's a winger you're
- 18:52talking about exactly exactly but let's think about pathways right and I think the sevens should
- 19:00still be a pathway especially for backs and I know in the last I don't know what it's like in
- 19:05South Africa Victor but in New Zealand in the last few years it's been a bit separate so we've had
- 19:10our sevens contract players and we've had our 15s contract players and there hasn't been a lot
- 19:14of crossover but I think Lee Roy is is one of those guys that like you know he's he's a qualified
- 19:23electrician he's done the hard yards he hasn't come through the traditional pathway he was an
- 19:29amazing sevens play but the thing I like about the way he plays is that his individual skills are
- 19:35from sevens you know when you get into wide channel and sevens you've got to clean out properly
- 19:41right or you get hammered and I think those crossover skills that he's brought to the game
- 19:48really really good so we need to look at sevens as a pathway as well so guys coming across
- 19:54I just like how New Zealand is following the spring walks at the moment I mean we started with a
- 20:00high kick with a wing as that needs to be full backs under the high ball then we changed to
- 20:05bringing sevens players into with goal goal be goodly orange now you guys are doing the same it's
- 20:11nice that you guys are following success it's always good Victor like we've never followed so
- 20:17that you've always followed us I'll just remind you you have a New Zealander in your coaching
- 20:21staff in the backs just reminding us trying to teach him something then we can send him back for
- 20:26you guys so but you're in camp with Japan at the moment what's the what's your program here
- 20:33yeah it just arrives yesterday we've been on a split camp with the forwards and the backs the
- 20:39forwards are here in Oita it's my first time yeah while the backs is in Miyazaki and then we
- 20:46join up together on Thursday and yeah we've got Australia A we'll probably play like a B
- 20:52side against them and then Australia and then it's into their inner fear tour starting off with
- 20:58a spring box at Tweaking M so pretty tough to it for the boys up north I think Miyazashi Miyamoto
- 21:07Musashi was from Oita wasn't he the famous the famous samurai yeah I took a photo yesterday
- 21:18with a samurai maybe it's it's talking about that Northern tour I mean from the South African
- 21:23the all black perspective you know it's a great opportunity to just get another gauge on where they
- 21:30are in terms of you know so the all black start with that big game against Trumbi's Irish team in
- 21:35Chicago and then basically they have a grand slam I think and then South Africa's got a hell of a
- 21:41tour including playing France and France obviously so what do you what do you do you mean Riccata
- 21:47when you say get a gauge well you know it's constantly the world champions South Africans after
- 21:53when everything they're South African right they're the world champions twice in the double championship
- 21:58so they're under a lot of pressure to go north and prove themselves is that what you're
- 22:03is that what you're saying right gauge themselves haven't we proven enough do we need to do more
- 22:09yeah listen I think this this Northern aim is here trips going to be very exciting I'm a full
- 22:19believer the big threat for New Zealand and the spring walks is France at the moment if you look
- 22:24at their team in the previous World Cup they were outstanding actually still a young squat they've
- 22:31got some brilliant players and they look at the top 14 with the lose and Bordeaux just playing
- 22:37unbelievable rugby dominating the Heineken Cup or the invasive Cup as it's called now I think France
- 22:45is a big threat I think and it's a pretty Trumbi is not here I think Ireland is starting to fall
- 22:54away a little bit I think England will probably be a tougher taste match at the end of the year but
- 23:00France I think it's going to be very difficult for South Africa to go and beat them in France
- 23:06I think I think to get to get to World Cups nowadays and to be competitive you need to know
- 23:15how to win and you need to win tough so for the New Zealanders to go on a grand slam if you're a
- 23:23young like we grew up dreaming of winning grand slams and it's going to be incredibly difficult I
- 23:29agree with Victor on Ireland I have no idea where they are at the moment I don't think you know
- 23:35they've had they've had a 9 and 10 you know with Jamison but now what are they going to do at 10
- 23:41you know I think they've got some challenges they've got some players that are getting older
- 23:46France I believe are the best side in the world I think that the coach made some mistakes at the
- 23:52last World Cup was who or how long he played especially DuPont I think he left him out there
- 23:5915 minutes too long in that game that they lost and he was gassed at the end but they are
- 24:08unbelievable they sent their second side to New Zealand and not only were they incredibly well
- 24:13coach they were full of talent and full of really good technical players so the rut was aggressive
- 24:20so I agree with Victor I think that France are the biggest threat on the Northern too I've no idea
- 24:25how Ireland's going to face up England's always going to be tough at picking them although there's
- 24:30a few rumbles coming out about ortho just lately and it's man management skills whether that's true
- 24:35or not who knows but we'll probably find out and Scotland's always the banana peel because they're
- 24:41always better they're a bit like Argentina they're always better than people give them credit for
- 24:45and you've got to got to look out so the hardest thing for us those it's the end of the year
- 24:52and you know fatigues are real issue so is this in this interview too is this one time with you
- 24:57two really joined together as the southern hemisphere taking on the north are you together in this
- 25:04I think we're coming together I see Trimby's got a very nice video of you Sir John Cohen this
- 25:10weekend this whole week all over social media so I think as we go up north we'll go back to south
- 25:19versus north totally totally I want South Africa to win every single game and I want New Zealand to win
- 25:26every single go and I hope Aussie continue to perform and get better when's Joe Schmidt finishing
- 25:32is he still doing the end of year to it yeah I think so yeah yeah he finishes next year so you know
- 25:38for me the northern hemisphere is a different rugby it's a different type of game and I love it I
- 25:46mean I think the six nations one of the greatest competitions I think South Africa a better set up
- 25:52to play in the northern hemisphere now just because they got so many players playing over then they
- 25:56understand the system they understand how it works they understand the game I mean the games way
- 26:00more on the ground as an epic you know like you even see it when you get an English referee on the
- 26:05weekend with Aussie so so much to report people on the ground so it's a different type of game
- 26:11but it's a it's a fantastic opportunity for the south to so we're still strong I just I'm just
- 26:17going to I just people we go there's just one thing I wanted to just acknowledge some some
- 26:22devastating news this week you know when we hear about Lewis Moody and his diagnosis with him and
- 26:29D you know you know he's done so much for so many other people and and you can see when he
- 26:36was being interviewed really it's it's just such a hard thing for him to comprehend it's hard for
- 26:41any us to comprehend so so all I love to to Lewis and the family and and you know I mean this is
- 26:48a time where the rugby community is really not about rivals but we're all in this together and we
- 26:52all just wish him we just wish him the best that he possibly can be yeah I mean I I um I can't
- 27:02imagine I can't imagine what he's what him and his family are going through and the courage that
- 27:08he showed as a rugby player and the courage that he's shown post to you know just to give to so
- 27:14many other people I what he walk across the Sahara Desert you know he's been raising money for
- 27:18brain cancer my thoughts just go out to him and and he'll he'll fight man and I think the most
- 27:25important thing is be great to see him on the northern tour I hope to get to see him this game
- 27:32like you said Ricardo you know I I just love our game because our game is about rivalry but then
- 27:41shaking hands and having a beer and to see one of our mates like that and you probably
- 27:45um you know you probably met him a probably a bit more than me Victor yeah um just want to say
