Transcript
- 0:07Speaker 1: The Season with Peter Schreeger is a production of the
- 0:09Speaker 1: NFL in partnership with iHeartRadio. What's Up, Everybody? This is
- 0:24Speaker 1: the Season with Peter Schrager. I'm Peter Schreger, joined here
- 0:29Speaker 1: by my trusted producer, Aaron wang Kaufman. We are now
- 0:35Speaker 1: less than ten days away from the NFL Draft, and
- 0:38Speaker 1: I have not slept over the last twenty four hours
- 0:41Speaker 1: because I had been working on it for weeks. But
- 0:43Speaker 1: I take a lot of pride and I put out
- 0:45Speaker 1: my first mock draft. And that sounds so trivial in
- 0:48Speaker 1: the grand scheme of things, and you're just dropping into
- 0:51Speaker 1: this podcast, like, who is this person who thinks that
- 0:54Speaker 1: it's such a dramatic thing that he's putting out his
- 0:56Speaker 1: first mock draft? The first of two. Let me explain
- 1:00Speaker 1: the reason I take so much pride in it is that,
- 1:02Speaker 1: year after year after year, I have a great humility.
- 1:07Speaker 1: Usually I do not have great humility when it comes
- 1:09Speaker 1: to this. I have the most accurate mock draft on
- 1:12Speaker 1: the Internet. And that's because I don't do the mock
- 1:15Speaker 1: draft in terms of who I would take or what
- 1:18Speaker 1: I think a team should do. I do it with
- 1:20Speaker 1: what I'm hearing from around the league, from GMS, from coaches,
- 1:23Speaker 1: and in many cases from those teams specifically, if you
- 1:26Speaker 1: watch Good Morning Football, listen to this podcast, you know
- 1:28Speaker 1: I've got relationships around the league. I oftentimes will utilize
- 1:33Speaker 1: those relationships and getting the best NFL news available, not
- 1:36Speaker 1: necessarily transactional. This guy signed for this much money and
- 1:39Speaker 1: breaking news here but more. Okay, Jalen Hurt signs a deal.
- 1:43Speaker 1: Here's how it got done. Here's why I got done.
- 1:45Speaker 1: Let me speak to my sources in Philadelphia and on
- 1:48Speaker 1: the players side and try to come to that conclusion
- 1:51Speaker 1: and get the best information possible. When it comes to
- 1:54Speaker 1: the draft though, and I says, well, you're getting smoke screens,
- 1:57Speaker 1: you're getting this. No one's telling me who they're taking
- 1:59Speaker 1: up top. What I'm doing is I'm talking to all
- 2:01Speaker 1: the teams I possibly can, and I'm trying to infer
- 2:05Speaker 1: the most informed that I can out of that. I'm
- 2:08Speaker 1: trying to make it work. I'm trying to get to
- 2:11Speaker 1: a point where I feel comfortable when people around the
- 2:13Speaker 1: league can look at it and say, ooh, that's interesting.
- 2:15Speaker 1: He must have spoken to somebody. Let me get on
- 2:17Speaker 1: the phone and let me see what he's got, or
- 2:18Speaker 1: let me explain why this might not make sense. So
- 2:22Speaker 1: my first mock draft came out and I worked on
- 2:24Speaker 1: it over Saturday, Sunday, Monday, came out on Tuesday morning.
- 2:29Speaker 1: Here's how it goes, and I'm going to go through
- 2:31Speaker 1: it quickly and I'm going to have some comments throughout
- 2:34Speaker 1: number one. The Carolina Panthers are taking Bryce Young number two.
- 2:37Speaker 1: I have a trade and this is so unlikely, and
- 2:41Speaker 1: yet I connected a couple dots here where if ever
- 2:44Speaker 1: there was going to be an intradivisional trade, this would
- 2:45Speaker 1: be the one. I have. The Houston Texans trading back
- 2:49Speaker 1: with the Indianapolis Colts, their hated rival and a team
- 2:53Speaker 1: in the division, and the Colts moving up to number
- 2:55Speaker 1: two and doing so by trading one of their star players,
- 2:59Speaker 1: DeForest Buckner, to the Houston Texans. They just restructured Buckner's contract.
- 3:05Speaker 1: Buckner also played for Miko Ryans when they were in
- 3:07Speaker 1: San Francisco. Again, so rare to have an intradivisional trade.
- 3:11Speaker 1: But if the Colts were to offer the fourth overall
- 3:14Speaker 1: pick into Forest Buckner for the second overall pick, could
- 3:18Speaker 1: the Texans say no? And if you're listening at home,
- 3:21Speaker 1: and you're saying, why would the Texans just take CJ. Straud,
- 3:24Speaker 1: Just take CJ. Stroud at two, be done with it.
- 3:27Speaker 1: They might. In fact, I would say, even though I
- 3:30Speaker 1: don't have a happening in this mock draft, there's a
- 3:32Speaker 1: pretty good chance they do take a quarterback at two,
- 3:34Speaker 1: despite all the words right now that they might be
- 3:35Speaker 1: trading out or they might just be taking the best
- 3:37Speaker 1: defensive player available. I will make this point there are
- 3:41Speaker 1: personalities and humans involved when it comes to the draft,
- 3:45Speaker 1: and oftentimes a team won't have a certain player on
- 3:48Speaker 1: their board because of this guy had this off the
- 3:51Speaker 1: field in fraction, or this guy doesn't fit in our
- 3:53Speaker 1: scheme anything. There's no chance that Houston Texans don't have
- 3:56Speaker 1: c J. Stroud high on their board. They absolutely do
- 3:59Speaker 1: have c J. Stroud high on their board. They might
- 4:01Speaker 1: take him second overall. I will note that CJ. Stroud's
- 4:04Speaker 1: agent is the same agent as the Watson. Houston and
- 4:09Speaker 1: Sean Watson ended in not such great ways, and it
- 4:13Speaker 1: was a disgusting fallout of a guy holding out and
- 4:16Speaker 1: he made all his money, and yet he demanded a
- 4:18Speaker 1: trade and they let it. If Houston doesn't draft a
- 4:21Speaker 1: quarterback second overall, and they move back and draft another quarterback,
- 4:24Speaker 1: and if it's not c J. Stroud, I'm not saying
- 4:26Speaker 1: it's because of that. I would just say there are
- 4:28Speaker 1: personalities involved, and I no one said to me they
- 4:32Speaker 1: will not take him, or look at the agent. No,
- 4:35Speaker 1: that's me. That's me coming there and just saying, I
- 4:37Speaker 1: wonder if that plays a role in the selection of
- 4:39Speaker 1: a franchise quarterback, if they go down that road with
- 4:42Speaker 1: the same agent that represented their last franchise quarterback where
- 4:46Speaker 1: it went terribly awry at the end. So I've got
- 4:49Speaker 1: the Colts taking c J. Stroud at too. I have
- 4:51Speaker 1: the Cardinals staying put, taking Will Anderson. I have the
- 4:54Speaker 1: Texans then taking not a quarterback but Tyree Wilson out
- 4:57Speaker 1: of Texas Tech. I'll get to their quarterback situation in
- 5:00Speaker 1: just a bit. Five is the Seahawks, fascinating team, loaded everywhere.
- 5:07Speaker 1: Just signed Geno Smith to a contract that's three years
- 5:11Speaker 1: and truly he's the guy for next year for sure,
- 5:14Speaker 1: one year, twenty seven million. Next year. I have the Seahawks,
- 5:17Speaker 1: with Jalen Carter still on the board, taking Anthony Richardson
- 5:20Speaker 1: the quarterback out of Florida. Gino Smith's thirty two. He
- 5:24Speaker 1: had a great year. He's getting handsomely paid for it.
- 5:26Speaker 1: It's a great story. I mean truly, it's the comeback
- 5:29Speaker 1: player of the year story you'd hope.
- 5:30Speaker 2: Four.
- 5:30Speaker 1: After eight straight years of not being a starter and
- 5:34Speaker 1: four straight years of signing one year contracts, he finally
- 5:38Speaker 1: gets the deal with the Seahawks. He's going to be
- 5:40Speaker 1: their quarterback next year. Anthony Richardson is the future, and
- 5:44Speaker 1: I don't think the Seahawks plan on being in the
- 5:46Speaker 1: top five anytime soon. I don't think the Seahawks plan
- 5:48Speaker 1: on ever being in this rebuild mode where they got
- 5:51Speaker 1: all this for the Russell Wilson trade anytime soon. Top
- 5:54Speaker 1: five pick a quarterback's there with a quarterback who can
- 5:57Speaker 1: not only teach him the ways, but doesn't make him
- 6:00Speaker 1: feel forced he has to start year one. I like
- 6:03Speaker 1: Anthony Richardson to the Seahawks at five. I went Jalen Carter.
- 6:07Speaker 1: We'll get to Jalen Carter a bit. I think Jalen
- 6:09Speaker 1: Carter is the best player in this draft. I think
- 6:12Speaker 1: there's a lot of baggage. I think there's a lot
- 6:14Speaker 1: of question marks. I don't think Jalen Carters for everybody.
- 6:16Speaker 1: If he's sitting there at six and the Lions have
- 6:18Speaker 1: Hutchinson on one side and they can get Carter on
- 6:21Speaker 1: the inside, that's a lot to deal with if you're
- 6:24Speaker 1: an opposing team. And if the draft was last I'll
- 6:28Speaker 1: say February, or if the draft was in January, Jalen
- 6:32Speaker 1: Carter's the first overall pick, if not the second. If
- 6:34Speaker 1: you want to say, that team's going quarterback in Bryce Young.
- 6:37Speaker 1: So I got the Lions taking him there. Raiders seven,
- 6:40Speaker 1: Peter Scarnsky at a Northwestern eight Falcons, Nolan Smith, Georgia
- 6:44Speaker 1: pass rusher nine Bears, Christian Gonzales, a defensive back out
- 6:49Speaker 1: of Oregon. Ten. Eagles have not selected a running back
- 6:52Speaker 1: in the first round since nineteen eighty seven, when they
- 6:55Speaker 1: took Keith Byers. Google Keith Buyers, awesome player at Ohio State.
- 7:00Speaker 1: I have him going running back Bishan Robinson, and then
- 7:03Speaker 1: I get really interesting here. Eleven and twelve to Tennessee Titans.
- 7:07Speaker 1: A ton of talent still on the board in this draft.
- 7:09Speaker 1: They have needs everywhere. They have a terrible wide receiver's
- 7:13Speaker 1: room right now. The offensive line is a mess, and
- 7:15Speaker 1: there's not been a single offensive lineman outside of Scoronski
- 7:18Speaker 1: or a wide receiver taken he in the draft eleven.
- 7:20Speaker 1: What do they do. I've got the Tennessee Titans taking
- 7:23Speaker 1: a quarterback, taking Hendon Hooker at a Tennessee Hendon Hooker
- 7:28Speaker 1: before Will Levis. Look, it might not go this way.
- 7:31Speaker 1: I just am hearing a lot of heat on Hooker
- 7:34Speaker 1: in the last few weeks. Hooker would be a local product.
- 7:37Speaker 1: He played at Tennessee. He'd be going to the Tennessee Titans.
- 7:40Speaker 1: Tannehill is there, so as he recovers from an ACL,
- 7:43Speaker 1: Tannehill would be the starter, at least for a year,
- 7:46Speaker 1: maybe a year more. Who knows Hooker comes in coming
- 7:50Speaker 1: off the ACL. And then will Levis is sitting there
- 7:52Speaker 1: at twelve, And if the Texans still have a twelfth pick,
- 7:55Speaker 1: I've got them taking will Levis at twelve. Now, will
- 7:57Speaker 1: Levis is a fascinating story. At one point I thought
- 8:00Speaker 1: he could have been the first overall pick. Now I'm
- 8:02Speaker 1: having a hard time finding a team if he slips
- 8:04Speaker 1: past Indianapolis. I kind of put him at twelve to Houston.
- 8:08Speaker 1: Would Houston pass on a quarterback twice by saying they
- 8:11Speaker 1: wouldn't take one at second. They wouldn't take one at
- 8:13Speaker 1: fourth and then take one at twelve and feel good
- 8:15Speaker 1: about it. I don't know. It's a mock draft Will Levis.
- 8:19Speaker 1: I needed a place for him. I feel like the
- 8:20Speaker 1: Houston Texans desperately need a quarterback. I think it makes
- 8:23Speaker 1: some sense Will Levis, the Texans at twelve, Jets, Broderick Jones, Patriots,
- 8:28Speaker 1: Devin Witherspoon, the cornerback at Illinois, some of him going
- 8:31Speaker 1: in the top five, top six. I got him going
- 8:33Speaker 1: fourteen and going second on the cornerback to Christian Gonzales fifteen,
- 8:38Speaker 1: Green Bay. How fun would this be? Jackson Smith Nijibba.
- 8:42Speaker 1: I think I'm saying that right, Nijigba Nijigba. Ohio State
- 8:46Speaker 1: obviously teams love him. He's a talent, and the Packers.
- 8:49Speaker 1: Would that not be the ultimate salt in the wound
- 8:51Speaker 1: to Rodgers. They never drafted a wide receiver or a
- 8:53Speaker 1: tight end in the first round while Rodgers was there.
- 8:55Speaker 1: Never not once they traded up and got Jordan Love,
- 8:58Speaker 1: but they did not take a wide receiver. If they
- 9:00Speaker 1: were to take a wide receiver at fifteenth. Overall, I
- 9:03Speaker 1: think it's a smart because they need help in the
- 9:05Speaker 1: wide receiver's room, and B it would be quite a
- 9:08Speaker 1: dig and quite assaultan the wound to Rodgers. Sixteen Washington,
- 9:12Speaker 1: Dalton Kincaid, tight end out of Utah, love his game.
- 9:15Speaker 1: Seventeen Paris Johnson sitting there. I've got the Steelers taking
- 9:18Speaker 1: him at seventeen eighteen Joey Porter Junior to the Lions.
- 9:23Speaker 1: Would the Steelers pass on Joey Porter Junior? Everyone say,
- 9:25Speaker 1: absolutely not. Joey Porter's a legend now hard a situation
- 9:28Speaker 1: that would be for Joey Porter Junior going to Pittsburgh
- 9:31Speaker 1: and playing for Mike Tomlin just as his father did.
- 9:33Speaker 1: I don't know. I feel like after their needs on
- 9:37Speaker 1: offensive line, I would go Paris Johnson there if he
- 9:39Speaker 1: was still on the board. So eighteen would be Joey
- 9:41Speaker 1: Porter Junior. That means the Lions would get Jalen Carter
- 9:44Speaker 1: and Joey Porter Junior. That would be awesome for them. Again.
- 9:47Speaker 1: A mock draft ten days out nineteen Tampa, Deontay Banks
- 9:53Speaker 1: out of Maryland twenty the Seahawks. They already got Anthony Richardson.
- 9:56Speaker 1: In this draft, they get Lucas van Ness out of Iowa.
- 9:59Speaker 1: Twenty one Chargers. They take Michael Mayer, talented tight end
- 10:02Speaker 1: at a Notre Dame Ravens Darnell Wright offensive tack Tennessee
- 10:07Speaker 1: Vikings at twenty three. A lot to talk about them
- 10:09Speaker 1: possibly moving up for a quarterback. I have them stay
- 10:11Speaker 1: input getting Jordan Addison the wide receiver at a USC
- 10:15Speaker 1: This dude with Justin Jefferson together would be quite a duo.
- 10:18Speaker 1: They lost Adam Thielen. Jaguars go Brian Branch, defensive back
- 10:21Speaker 1: out of Jacksonville. Twenty five the Giants. Everyone all lies
- 10:25Speaker 1: on the Giants. They took a small, undersized wide receiver
- 10:27Speaker 1: who didn't do much last year in Wondale Robinson. I
- 10:30Speaker 1: have them going for a small, undersized wide receiver in
- 10:32Speaker 1: the first round this year. Yeah, this guy has accomplished
- 10:35Speaker 1: way more in his college career, going Zay Flowers out
- 10:38Speaker 1: of Boston College. Giants fans already crushing me online saying
- 10:41Speaker 1: there's no way they would do that. They would not
- 10:43Speaker 1: go back to wide receiver. Guess what they might. Twenty
- 10:46Speaker 1: six Cowboys Jamiir Gibbs running back at Alabama. Zeke's gone.
- 10:49Speaker 1: They fill them in with Gibbs. Gibbs talented player compared
- 10:52Speaker 1: to Alvin Kamara. Finish out this draft Bills and Aaron,
- 10:56Speaker 1: I know you're a Bills fan. Defensive end Miles Murphy
- 10:59Speaker 1: at a Clemson Bengals tight end Darnell Washington. I know
- 11:03Speaker 1: they got Irv Smith, but they might not be done
- 11:05Speaker 1: in that position. And I go wide receiver Jonathan Mingo
- 11:08Speaker 1: to the Saints. I don't have anyone else anywhere online
- 11:11Speaker 1: having Mingo as a first round pick. I'm hearing too
- 11:12Speaker 1: much buzz about him. I'm just throwing him in there
- 11:15Speaker 1: at twenty nine. We'll see what the league says. If
- 11:16Speaker 1: I get a bunch of text texting me saying he's
- 11:18Speaker 1: a third round prospects that around prospect, get him out
- 11:20Speaker 1: of there. He won't be in my final mock draft thirty.
- 11:23Speaker 1: Will McDonald the fourth at of Iowa State. Talented dude,
- 11:27Speaker 1: great story. Matt Campbell is the head coach of Iowa State.
- 11:32Speaker 1: He is dear friends with Nick Sirianni. They go back
- 11:34Speaker 1: a long way. I could see him talking up McDonald.
- 11:37Speaker 1: Them getting what they do is building on the inside out.
- 11:40Speaker 1: That would mean they'd get Bjon Robinson and Will McDonald.
- 11:42Speaker 1: Pretty good first day for the Eagles. And last the
- 11:46Speaker 1: Chiefs at thirty one, Quinton Johnson towering wide receiver at
- 11:50Speaker 1: a TCU. Now some notes as you listen, and I
- 11:53Speaker 1: just spit all that at you. It's going to change
- 11:56Speaker 1: from now till a few days from now. So this
- 11:59Speaker 1: is obviously not gospel. I can't tell you which things
- 12:01Speaker 1: come from which teams, but trust me, this doesn't come
- 12:04Speaker 1: throwing things at the wall. Also, last year they were
- 12:07Speaker 1: thirteen day one trades thirteen so all this can be
- 12:11Speaker 1: ripped up and thrown away once the draft starts. But Aaron,
- 12:14Speaker 1: that is my mock draft. I take it very seriously.
- 12:17Speaker 1: I take a lot of pride in it, something that
- 12:19Speaker 1: I always say, it's almost like a PSA announcement that
- 12:22Speaker 1: I do on Good Morning Football. I don't know how
- 12:24Speaker 1: to scout. I don't know how to watch film. I
- 12:27Speaker 1: just don't have it in me. I try. I've sat
- 12:29Speaker 1: down in those rooms and been like, all right here
- 12:31Speaker 1: in the three four scheme, watch the off the ball linebacker.
- 12:34Speaker 1: I can't. It doesn't have I love the stories, I
- 12:37Speaker 1: love the action, I love the drama of the field,
- 12:40Speaker 1: but I love the intrigue of the business of football,
- 12:43Speaker 1: and the draft is the business of football. So a
- 12:45Speaker 1: lot of mock drafts are written and done by guys
- 12:47Speaker 1: who will tell you what they think a team should do.
- 12:50Speaker 1: Or here's why Jordan Addison should go before JSN whatever
- 12:55Speaker 1: his nickname is from from Ohio State, Jackson Smith, Nijigba, Nijigba.
- 13:00Speaker 1: I gotta get that right. It's gonna be a star
- 13:01Speaker 1: in the league. I gotta know it. I take a
- 13:03Speaker 1: lot of pride and saying I don't know any of that.
- 13:05Speaker 1: It's not what I think the team should do. It's
- 13:07Speaker 1: what I think they might do, and hopefully there's a
- 13:10Speaker 1: place for that in the mock draft ecosystem. I don't
- 13:13Speaker 1: make fun of mock drafters. I don't make fun of
- 13:15Speaker 1: the idea of mock draft. I think it's low hanging
- 13:17Speaker 1: through people. Do they think it's stupid. I've never not
- 13:20Speaker 1: clicked on a mock draft. I love it. I find
- 13:22Speaker 1: it interesting, and I'll tell you what the teams do too.
- 13:26Speaker 1: My mock draft is currently up at NFL dot com.
- 13:29Speaker 1: If you're listening to this during the week, you'll find
- 13:31Speaker 1: it out one of those side panels. You can also
- 13:32Speaker 1: find it on my Twitter timeline. It will change, it
- 13:35Speaker 1: will change, but for now. We have fun, We throw
- 13:38Speaker 1: things out there, and we try to get you the
- 13:40Speaker 1: most information as possible. My guest is someone I've been
- 13:43Speaker 1: wanting to have on before the draft because I think
- 13:46Speaker 1: this side of Daniel Jeremiah might be the smartest draft
- 13:49Speaker 1: voice that we've got out there. As far as the
- 13:51Speaker 1: players go. He scouts them all all year long, and
- 13:55Speaker 1: then his job is to recruit them and get them
- 13:57Speaker 1: to participate in his Senior Bowl All Star game. His
- 14:01Speaker 1: name is Jim Naggy. He's got a long history in
- 14:04Speaker 1: the league, and he left a very good job and
- 14:06Speaker 1: see working for the Seahawks front office to be the
- 14:09Speaker 1: guy who runs the Senior Bowl. If you don't know
- 14:11Speaker 1: what the Senior Bowl is, it's a senior all star
- 14:14Speaker 1: game of the best college football talent in the country.
- 14:17Speaker 1: And not only does he have to get these players
- 14:19Speaker 1: to agree to come, he's got to get them to
- 14:20Speaker 1: agree to come and participate over the course of the
- 14:23Speaker 1: week and go through rigorous examination, and at the end
- 14:26Speaker 1: of it, a lot of them help their draft stocks.
- 14:28Speaker 1: Jim Naggy is his name. He is our guest, and
- 14:31Speaker 1: we're going to get to him right now. I'm so
- 14:36Speaker 1: excited about our guests. I think it's the perfect guest
- 14:39Speaker 1: as we are heading towards the draft next week and
- 14:42Speaker 1: all the mock drafts are coming out, and this is
- 14:44Speaker 1: smoke screens season, and everyone's acting as if they're an
- 14:47Speaker 1: expert on these players, both on the field and off.
- 14:49Speaker 1: There may be no greater closer person to some of
- 14:55Speaker 1: these young men than our guests. It is the executive
- 14:58Speaker 1: director of the Senior Bowl and a guy whose opinion
- 15:00Speaker 1: I really value and whose work ethic I absolutely respect.
- 15:04Speaker 1: Jim Naggy. Welcome to the season with Peter Schrager.
- 15:09Speaker 3: Peter, great to be on man. Thanks for having me
- 15:11Speaker 3: all right.
- 15:11Speaker 1: So, for viewers and listeners who might not be familiar
- 15:14Speaker 1: with your background NFL scout front office guy for years.
- 15:18Speaker 1: I know you as Seattle, but New England as well.
- 15:21Speaker 1: Take us through your path a little bit in the
- 15:24Speaker 1: NFL and how you got to where you are right now.
- 15:26Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 15:26Speaker 4: I had a one year brief stint with the former
- 15:31Speaker 4: team known as the Washington Redskins. Was my first job
- 15:33Speaker 4: in the league. John Schneider, who's the GM in Seattle,
- 15:37Speaker 4: hired me. There was there one year. John and Marty
- 15:40Speaker 4: Schottenheimer got shown the door after an eight and eight
- 15:42Speaker 4: season when Marty probably should have won Coach of the
- 15:44Speaker 4: Year that year, considering what our roster looked like. You
- 15:47Speaker 4: go eight and eight, Tony Banks is our starting quarterback.
- 15:50Speaker 4: We won a couple of games with Kent Graham. I mean,
- 15:52Speaker 4: it's a pretty good year. So then I ended up
- 15:54Speaker 4: in New England for a good run. After that, started
- 15:56Speaker 4: scouting on the West coast and then moved to the Midwest.
- 15:59Speaker 4: From there, I went to Kansas City with Scott Pioli,
- 16:01Speaker 4: our general manager when he got the job in Kansas City.
- 16:04Speaker 4: Scott does great work for the NFL network now. And
- 16:07Speaker 4: then I went to Seattle for five years before taking
- 16:09Speaker 4: this job. And this was really the senior bal thing
- 16:11Speaker 4: was really a family decision. Mobiles my wife's hometown. We've
- 16:14Speaker 4: been here since two thousand and seven.
- 16:16Speaker 3: To raise our kids.
- 16:17Speaker 4: So when this job came open, it was too good
- 16:20Speaker 4: to not jump at. I called John Schneider. I said, John,
- 16:22Speaker 4: I gotta I gotta go for this, don't I And
- 16:24Speaker 4: He's like, you're dang right, you do. So here we
- 16:26Speaker 4: are five years later, just finished up our fifth Senior
- 16:28Speaker 4: Ble and the.
- 16:29Speaker 1: Senior ball has grown and grown under your stewardship. What
- 16:34Speaker 1: is your role as executive director in getting to know
- 16:36Speaker 1: these young men and getting them those invites to the
- 16:39Speaker 1: premier college All Star game.
- 16:40Speaker 4: You know, Peter, I'll say this has been a great
- 16:42Speaker 4: game forever many My predecessor Phil Savage, the former Browns
- 16:46Speaker 4: GM did an awesome job here.
- 16:48Speaker 3: You know.
- 16:48Speaker 4: The biggest goal was to was to really market the
- 16:51Speaker 4: game a little better, and that's through social media. We've
- 16:53Speaker 4: really used social media as as an incredible tool.
- 16:56Speaker 3: Helped us recruiting too.
- 16:57Speaker 4: I mean that was really the biggest thing is to
- 16:58Speaker 4: is connect with these players and recruit these players.
- 17:01Speaker 3: You know.
- 17:01Speaker 4: So yeah, that's that's my biggest role in terms of
- 17:03Speaker 4: these players is just scouting upright, created real football operation.
- 17:08Speaker 3: Got tape in the office.
- 17:08Speaker 4: We never had tape here in the office, so the
- 17:11Speaker 4: league office made us jump through some hoops to do that.
- 17:13Speaker 4: But thankfully that first year they allowed us to get
- 17:15Speaker 4: access to the tape, and you know, we track them
- 17:18Speaker 4: all the way through.
- 17:19Speaker 3: We're already jumping on twenty twenty four.
- 17:21Speaker 4: I started on the running backs yesterday, watch five or
- 17:23Speaker 4: six running backs, and then we take it all the
- 17:25Speaker 4: way through the year, you know, and differing levels. You know,
- 17:28Speaker 4: if I go out and do a hand invite like
- 17:30Speaker 4: I do with some of the smaller school guys, I
- 17:32Speaker 4: get to know them a little earlier in the process.
- 17:33Speaker 4: And then you know, goal of mine is just to
- 17:35Speaker 4: get to know them while they're down here in Mobile
- 17:37Speaker 4: for the week.
- 17:37Speaker 3: And again it's always varying levels.
- 17:39Speaker 4: Of you know, my communication with these guys, but that's
- 17:42Speaker 4: my goal every week by the time they leave, I
- 17:44Speaker 4: want to have some good one on one interaction with
- 17:46Speaker 4: all of them so.
- 17:47Speaker 1: You get to know them in the recruitment process of
- 17:49Speaker 1: getting to play in the game. And then once they
- 17:50Speaker 1: get to the game, it's a week in Mobile, Alabama,
- 17:54Speaker 1: they're playing for a team, but you're in all those meetings.
- 17:57Speaker 1: You're getting to know these guys, you know them inside
- 17:59Speaker 1: and out by the time that week is over in January.
- 18:01Speaker 3: Correct, Yeah, try to you know, try it.
- 18:04Speaker 4: That's the fun part is popping in some of these
- 18:06Speaker 4: bizz meeting rooms at night. And obviously that the team
- 18:08Speaker 4: interviews are very private and I would never try to
- 18:11Speaker 4: overstep my bounds there. But I do get a lot
- 18:13Speaker 4: of good feedback from from buddies around the league and
- 18:15Speaker 4: who did a good job in interviews and you know
- 18:17Speaker 4: how different guys presented, and then obviously just the on
- 18:20Speaker 4: field takeaways. You're down here, you know, the NFL network
- 18:23Speaker 4: comes down here in mass They send everybody and just
- 18:26Speaker 4: the takeaways from being on the field and watching who's
- 18:28Speaker 4: taking coaching and who's competing, and you know, little things
- 18:31Speaker 4: like body language, facial expressions when they're in these really
- 18:34Speaker 4: highly competitive situations. Man, I mean that's you see some
- 18:37Speaker 4: of the head coaches. I mean I feel like every
- 18:39Speaker 4: single post that I put out, I did one this
- 18:42Speaker 4: morning and there's Mike Tomlin in the background, Mike to
- 18:44Speaker 4: Mike t gets in all this stuff. So just some
- 18:47Speaker 4: great takeaways. Yeah, try to learn these guys the best
- 18:49Speaker 4: we can.
- 18:49Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 18:50Speaker 1: So it's an information thing for a lot of us
- 18:52Speaker 1: going into the combine too. So it's our first dip
- 18:55Speaker 1: of the toes the college All Star Games, but this
- 18:57Speaker 1: is really the premiere one and these are the guys
- 18:58Speaker 1: that are going to the NFL. So for me, I
- 19:01Speaker 1: look at the Senior Bowl and I analyze every player
- 19:04Speaker 1: in there, and I get to get all the information
- 19:06Speaker 1: I do from the teams that were coaching those guys
- 19:09Speaker 1: get out of that. And I remember last year, and
- 19:10Speaker 1: I don't have any problem saying this. I had lunch
- 19:13Speaker 1: with Robert Sala before the draft and we were talking about,
- 19:17Speaker 1: would you know the Jets do this, would Jets do that?
- 19:19Speaker 1: And he said, you know, we don't need a quarterback.
- 19:21Speaker 1: But we were down in the Senior Bowl and it's
- 19:24Speaker 1: the fourth quarter and it's you know, it's whatever, and
- 19:26Speaker 1: you could say what, it doesn't matter. And Desmond Ridder
- 19:29Speaker 1: pulls over the entire team on the sideline and he
- 19:31Speaker 1: looks and says, I got you, guys, I'm going to
- 19:33Speaker 1: lead us here. And he's like, I love what that
- 19:35Speaker 1: kid's made out of. The littlest thing like that that travels,
- 19:39Speaker 1: that goes a long way. And that's something that the
- 19:41Speaker 1: Jets coaching staff, which didn't take Desmond Ridder, would never
- 19:45Speaker 1: have known had they not had Desmond Ridder at the
- 19:48Speaker 1: Senior Bowl. And of course now Desmont Ridder is a
- 19:49Speaker 1: starting quarterback in the NFL.
- 19:51Speaker 3: That's right.
- 19:52Speaker 4: You know, I think, Peter, what these teams are really
- 19:54Speaker 4: trying to drill down on right now on it if
- 19:56Speaker 4: you talk to all thirty two man who loves football
- 20:00Speaker 4: and who are the really truly competitive guys, So like
- 20:03Speaker 4: you know, I think the common thought out there is
- 20:05Speaker 4: that Senior Bowl practice week matters a ton in the game,
- 20:08Speaker 4: maybe not so much. And that's because most of the
- 20:10Speaker 4: you know, most of the key decision makers get on
- 20:12Speaker 4: a plane on Friday after Thursday night interviews and they
- 20:15Speaker 4: get out of dodge. But it's not like it's not
- 20:18Speaker 4: like the game tape isn't being watched right, Like it's
- 20:21Speaker 4: there's no there's no game that gets watched more in
- 20:23Speaker 4: draft meetings than the Senior Bowl game tape. And we
- 20:25Speaker 4: wore it out every team I ever worked for. But yeah,
- 20:28Speaker 4: it is the little takeaways. Man, It's the little things
- 20:30Speaker 4: that you can kind of grab onto. Because I say
- 20:32Speaker 4: this all the time, you know, it really is this
- 20:35Speaker 4: whole quote unquote pre draft process. It's a short period
- 20:37Speaker 4: of time. I mean you're talking January to April. You
- 20:40Speaker 4: got about four months to really figure these guys out
- 20:42Speaker 4: and who you want to give, you know, millions and
- 20:44Speaker 4: millions of dollars to so you do. Sometimes you grab
- 20:47Speaker 4: on a little stuff like that and it goes a
- 20:49Speaker 4: long way. And I think when you get a Desmond
- 20:51Speaker 4: Ritter that's in that in that situation, yeah, it might
- 20:53Speaker 4: not seem like the biggest deal to the outside world,
- 20:56Speaker 4: but he's a competitor, like he's in there, and to me,
- 20:58Speaker 4: those those are the little takeaways that that really it
- 21:01Speaker 4: seems like a little thing, but it's really a kind
- 21:04Speaker 4: of a window into a much bigger thing.
- 21:05Speaker 1: I don't have it in front of me, and I apologize.
- 21:08Speaker 1: I don't have the list of the guys who were there,
- 21:10Speaker 1: but I have memories, and you know, I've been watching
- 21:12Speaker 1: clips saying, who are the six quarterbacks who were at
- 21:15Speaker 1: the Senior Bowl this year?
- 21:17Speaker 4: This year it was Max dug In from TCU, j
- 21:20Speaker 4: Kaner from Fresno State, Clayton Tune from Houston, Jaren Hall
- 21:24Speaker 4: from BYU, Malik Cunningham from Louisville, and Tyson Bagent from Shepherd. So, yeah,
- 21:29Speaker 4: this was a year, a different year. You know, we've
- 21:31Speaker 4: had I think seven straight in Hendon Hooker.
- 21:33Speaker 3: Hennon was down.
- 21:34Speaker 4: He was obviously injured and he couldn't really participate on
- 21:36Speaker 4: the field, but went through all the interview stuff and
- 21:39Speaker 4: was in the in the classroom with the teams.
- 21:40Speaker 3: And again, we we've.
- 21:42Speaker 4: Never invited an injured player in my five years, but
- 21:44Speaker 4: I felt like Kennon was kind of a one off
- 21:46Speaker 4: special case. But yeah, we have like a seven year
- 21:49Speaker 4: run of first round quarterbacks. Maybe Hendon extends that streak.
- 21:52Speaker 4: Maybe that streaks and Jeopardy, But it was a cool
- 21:54Speaker 4: quarterback group because they were all kind of graded similarly
- 21:57Speaker 4: like most teams when we do our call process in
- 22:00Speaker 4: February before we put the roster together. That's part of
- 22:03Speaker 4: our process too, is really bouncing you know, Sharon grades
- 22:06Speaker 4: with the teams and really bouncing stuff off. That's where
- 22:08Speaker 4: the relationships come in. I mean, most of the teams
- 22:11Speaker 4: had all these guys in that you know, early day
- 22:13Speaker 4: three area and and that you know, Senior Bowl week
- 22:16Speaker 4: was kind of where we start sorting those guys out
- 22:18Speaker 4: and really you know, and then combine and obviously Pro
- 22:21Speaker 4: Day and the workouts and the interviews all matter. But
- 22:24Speaker 4: down here watching those guys throw back to back to
- 22:26Speaker 4: back kind of help those guys in that you know,
- 22:28Speaker 4: a third, fourth, fifth round area.
- 22:29Speaker 1: Hendon Hooker was there. He's getting a little bit of
- 22:32Speaker 1: buzz right now, Late buzz. I had my mock draft
- 22:34Speaker 1: come out today and I've got him going before Will Levis,
- 22:37Speaker 1: which has rocked the Internet and people are freaking out.
- 22:39Speaker 1: I'm hearing really positive things about not only his meetings,
- 22:43Speaker 1: about his early recovery, and about the leadership skills that
- 22:47Speaker 1: he brings to a team. Can you talk to us
- 22:48Speaker 1: about Hendon Hooker a little bit, even if he'd get
- 22:50Speaker 1: to play in the senior ball, the fact he was
- 22:52Speaker 1: there and was able to show his face, he did
- 22:54Speaker 1: interact with teammates and also coaching staffs. I think that
- 22:57Speaker 1: says a lot.
- 22:58Speaker 3: Like I said, that was that was a one off.
- 22:59Speaker 4: That's that's not a president we want to set, you know,
- 23:01Speaker 4: because again I think there will be some some people
- 23:04Speaker 4: that take advantage of that. Oh well, I'd love to go, Jim,
- 23:06Speaker 4: but I've got an ankle, like just use use the
- 23:09Speaker 4: game for the interview process, and we're not going to
- 23:11Speaker 4: go down that road. But to me, Hendon deserved it.
- 23:13Speaker 4: You know, he was one of the faces of college
- 23:14Speaker 4: football this year. Got to see him play a couple
- 23:17Speaker 4: of times this fall. I mean, just a really good player.
- 23:18Speaker 4: And again, because the quarterback position, the meeting time, in
- 23:21Speaker 4: the interview is like all that stuff being so important,
- 23:24Speaker 4: I kind of felt like we owed that to Hendon,
- 23:25Speaker 4: you know, and he's done a great job and I'll
- 23:28Speaker 4: take it here. Just kind of something time relevant with
- 23:31Speaker 4: the Jalen Hurts signing yesterday, right, I mean, Jalen.
- 23:33Speaker 3: Hurts came down here. Everybody had him in the fourth
- 23:36Speaker 3: or fifth round.
- 23:36Speaker 4: We had him in the fourth round coming in a
- 23:38Speaker 4: Senior Bowl week leading up to that draft. Like to me,
- 23:41Speaker 4: the comp for me was Dak Prescott and now we've
- 23:44Speaker 4: seen Jalen. I think Howie Roseman got questioned big time
- 23:47Speaker 4: when he made the draft pick, you know, fifty three overall.
- 23:49Speaker 4: Everyone thought that was way too high for Jalen. But
- 23:51Speaker 4: if you I mean, I think the lesson, at least
- 23:53Speaker 4: for me, Like the takeaway from Jalen was don't ever
- 23:55Speaker 4: put a ceiling on these guys that are like high
- 23:57Speaker 4: end competitors, high end workers, high end leaders.
- 24:00Speaker 3: And say what you want about Hendon's tape.
- 24:02Speaker 4: We can all watch his tape and pick apart scheme
- 24:04Speaker 4: and things of that nature. But he's the same as
- 24:07Speaker 4: Jalen in those three areas. Now they're a little bit
- 24:09Speaker 4: a little bit different personalities. Jalen's like super intense. I
- 24:12Speaker 4: know you've probably spent time around him, like he's a
- 24:14Speaker 4: really intense guy. Hendon's a little more laid back than that.
- 24:17Speaker 4: But in terms of the worker the competitor, like, that's
- 24:20Speaker 4: why that's why you're seeing that rise. I know you're
- 24:22Speaker 4: talking to guys around the league. That's why teams are
- 24:24Speaker 4: feeling good about him because of all that stuff that
- 24:27Speaker 4: you can't coach.
- 24:28Speaker 3: Man.
- 24:28Speaker 4: You can't by the time they're by the time they're
- 24:30Speaker 4: in their twenties. Like the work ethic, the competitor like,
- 24:33Speaker 4: that stuff's instilled. You can work on the on the
- 24:35Speaker 4: field stuff, but you can't work on that stuff. So
- 24:37Speaker 4: to me, that's why Hendon's making kind of this what
- 24:40Speaker 4: you'd call maybe a late rise.
- 24:41Speaker 1: All Right, the exercise we're gonna do, no one knows
- 24:44Speaker 1: these guys better than you. I'm sure you're biased towards
- 24:46Speaker 1: the senior Bowl players. I'm gonna maybe go with some underclassmen.
- 24:49Speaker 1: We're gonna do an exercise can also gonna be a
- 24:50Speaker 1: draft of sorts. We're gonna ping pong back and forth.
- 24:53Speaker 1: And this is called My Favorite five players with Jim
- 24:57Speaker 1: Naggy and what it is. I'm gonna name my favorite player,
- 25:00Speaker 1: You're gonna name your next favorite player, and it doesn't
- 25:02Speaker 1: have to be in any order. Just guys that we love,
- 25:04Speaker 1: you fall in love with people through the draft process,
- 25:07Speaker 1: and my first one is boring as hell. It is
- 25:10Speaker 1: someone that you're gonna say, Shrieker, that's not Bryce Young
- 25:13Speaker 1: is my favorite player in this draft. I absolutely loved
- 25:15Speaker 1: getting to know this guy. I love that he's different.
- 25:18Speaker 1: I like the fact that he's undersized and has worked
- 25:21Speaker 1: that way his entire career and has had great success
- 25:24Speaker 1: in the SEC. And from all the things I'm hearing
- 25:26Speaker 1: about in these meetings with teams, he has been just awesome,
- 25:30Speaker 1: a leader, competent, loves football, and I think the size
- 25:36Speaker 1: thing is cool, Like it's not my team, I'm not
- 25:39Speaker 1: drafted him first. Overall, I love guys who break the mold.
- 25:42Speaker 1: And you know, the comparisons are funny because I asked.
- 25:46Speaker 1: I asked a GM. I'm like, all right, give me
- 25:48Speaker 1: a comparison because Kyler's the first one or Drew Brees
- 25:50Speaker 1: the first one, but give me a comparison of the
- 25:52Speaker 1: way he plays the game. And the comparison I got
- 25:55Speaker 1: was Steph Curry, and I thought that was so cool.
- 25:57Speaker 1: So then I was like, all right, that's really cool.
- 25:58Speaker 1: And then I asked another GM, all right, who would
- 26:00Speaker 1: you compare Bryce Young two? And he goes, I compare
- 26:03Speaker 1: him to Trey Young on the Hawks, and I'm like,
- 26:05Speaker 1: that's the second an NBA point guard that has been
- 26:07Speaker 1: compared to. Like the NFL is changing, He's not built
- 26:11Speaker 1: like other NFL quarterbacks, and yet I still think he
- 26:13Speaker 1: might be the first overall pick. He's my favorite player
- 26:16Speaker 1: in this draft. Your thoughts on Bryce Young do you
- 26:19Speaker 1: have any Did you get to know him at all?
- 26:20Speaker 1: And when you see him on tape as a former scout,
- 26:23Speaker 1: what do you see?
- 26:24Speaker 4: I almost went with Bryce as well Peter at the
- 26:26Speaker 4: top because I didn't want to be accused of being
- 26:28Speaker 4: a senior ble homer. But yeah, I have had the
- 26:31Speaker 4: chance to meet Bryce without it. Actually met him a
- 26:33Speaker 4: couple of years ago at a camp out in Santa
- 26:35Speaker 4: Monica for the first time, and man, that the takeaway there.
- 26:39Speaker 4: And I found this over over the years with with
- 26:42Speaker 4: leaders and quarterbacks, like he's really comfortable in his own skin.
- 26:45Speaker 3: Like you said, he's he's a little bit different.
- 26:47Speaker 4: I mean I remember the first conversation we started talking
- 26:49Speaker 4: about cooking, Like the dude loves to cook, Like he's
- 26:52Speaker 4: kind of got.
- 26:53Speaker 3: Some renaissance man to him.
- 26:54Speaker 4: You know, he's not, but he's comfortable in his own skin.
- 26:57Speaker 3: He's really he's the genuine article. He is who he is.
- 26:59Speaker 4: You know, I think teammates are going to follow him
- 27:01Speaker 4: because again the work ethic part, and he talks about
- 27:04Speaker 4: Mac Jones and Max's influence on it and seeing Mac
- 27:07Speaker 4: work his freshman year.
- 27:08Speaker 3: So yeah, I'm with.
- 27:09Speaker 1: You, man.
- 27:10Speaker 4: He's a really fun guy to study on those point
- 27:12Speaker 4: guard things make sense because he is a really he's
- 27:14Speaker 4: a distributor, and in his defense, like he wasn't distributing
- 27:18Speaker 4: to the same people that maybe mac Intua were. You know,
- 27:21Speaker 4: there was a drop off in in skill talent at
- 27:23Speaker 4: Alabama over the last couple of years, and they were young.
- 27:25Speaker 4: I mean I think they were talented, they were just
- 27:27Speaker 4: young guys. He was throwing to a bunch of young
- 27:28Speaker 4: guys that maybe weren't up to speed. So yeah, I
- 27:31Speaker 4: think he's, Uh, he's going to be a cool pick.
- 27:32Speaker 4: I think he is going to go to Carolina. I'd
- 27:34Speaker 4: be at this point, I'd be surprised if he if
- 27:36Speaker 4: he wasn't, But yeah, he's he's he's a really good player,
- 27:39Speaker 4: really cool kid. Kind of breaks the mold in a
- 27:41Speaker 4: lot of different ways. But you spend time around and
- 27:43Speaker 4: really easy guy.
- 27:44Speaker 1: To like, all right, give us your number two, a
- 27:47Speaker 1: guy that you love.
- 27:48Speaker 4: So I'll I guess we'll start alphabetically with the double
- 27:51Speaker 4: a's at a time at a bare from from north
- 27:54Speaker 4: coast to it. So I've been practicing that for like
- 27:57Speaker 4: five or six months now. He was on Bruce Feldman's
- 28:00Speaker 4: Freaks List. I'm sure you see Bruce's uh, you know
- 28:03Speaker 4: article that comes out every year. We we've collaborated with
- 28:06Speaker 4: brucell a little bit over the last couple of years
- 28:07Speaker 4: on that list.
- 28:08Speaker 3: Tried to add a few names for him. But he
- 28:10Speaker 3: always brings.
- 28:10Speaker 4: Guys like at a time of wood to the table
- 28:12Speaker 4: that I didn't.
- 28:13Speaker 3: Know a lot about. He's really rare. He's a unique player.
- 28:16Speaker 4: I mean, you can't throw around like scouts are very
- 28:19Speaker 4: touchy when it comes to descriptors and adjectives and things
- 28:22Speaker 4: of that nature.
- 28:23Speaker 3: But like rare is rare.
- 28:25Speaker 4: And when you get a two hundred and eighty two
- 28:26Speaker 4: pound man running four four nine and he's got thirty
- 28:30Speaker 4: four inch arms, so he's got explosion, he's got length,
- 28:32Speaker 4: he's got all these things you want to look for.
- 28:34Speaker 4: But then on tape you see him playing kind of
- 28:36Speaker 4: a stand up edge position at Northwestern, which that's I
- 28:39Speaker 4: don't think that's what most teams see him, ask No,
- 28:42Speaker 4: I think they see him as a three technique.
- 28:44Speaker 3: So that's where we played him during Senior Bowl week.
- 28:46Speaker 4: And again in a really small exposure against a bunch
- 28:50Speaker 4: of first, second, and third round offensive linemen. During that week,
- 28:54Speaker 4: he was voted the defensive Lineman of the week by
- 28:56Speaker 4: the guys he played against. That offensive line voted him
- 28:59Speaker 4: the defensive lineman of the week at a position he'd
- 29:01Speaker 4: never really played before, which tells you like, wow, what's
- 29:04Speaker 4: this guy going to be in like two or three years.
- 29:06Speaker 4: So again, really talented guy. Best football is way ahead
- 29:11Speaker 4: of him, and he's starting to creep into those you know,
- 29:13Speaker 4: first round mocks a little bit, but he wasn't anywhere
- 29:16Speaker 4: near there, you know, a couple months ago. So it's
- 29:18Speaker 4: cool to see him rise. And again I just I
- 29:20Speaker 4: just think the tools you're you're gonna hit on it.
- 29:22Speaker 4: I mean, he works too hard, he's got too much,
- 29:24Speaker 4: too much talent in his body not to become a
- 29:26Speaker 4: good player.
- 29:27Speaker 1: Cool wrinkle there. I believe he's a Kansas City native,
- 29:30Speaker 1: grew up being a diehard Chiefs fan, and his whole
- 29:34Speaker 1: thing at the combine. When I spoke to his agent
- 29:36Speaker 1: was it would mean the world to be drafted in
- 29:38Speaker 1: the first round in Kansas City. Right now, I have
- 29:40Speaker 1: him right outside the first round, but who cares what
- 29:43Speaker 1: I have. A team might take him and I would
- 29:44Speaker 1: love to see that for him. My next guy, I'm
- 29:47Speaker 1: gonna go again with a kind of chalk pick here,
- 29:50Speaker 1: a player that everyone is starting to fall in love
- 29:52Speaker 1: with and has been watching for years. But I'm going
- 29:55Speaker 1: with Nolan Smith at a Georgia a pass rusher. One
- 29:59Speaker 1: of those deals where is he a product of the
- 30:02Speaker 1: system and there being a thousand NFL players or is
- 30:05Speaker 1: he a freak show that we overlooked during the college
- 30:08Speaker 1: season as one of these premier guys because of the
- 30:10Speaker 1: blowouts and because of what they were doing. This guy
- 30:13Speaker 1: ran a four to three nine forty as a defensive end.
- 30:16Speaker 1: He is an amazing young man. Great interview, and I
- 30:19Speaker 1: go back to the high school stuff, which I always
- 30:21Speaker 1: try to value and say, Okay, well what happened from
- 30:22Speaker 1: here to number one high school recruit in the country
- 30:25Speaker 1: when he decided to go to Georgia, had a wonderful career,
- 30:27Speaker 1: was sec Newcomer of the Year the whole thing, and
- 30:30Speaker 1: then you get into a defense with Jordan Davis and
- 30:33Speaker 1: Nakobe Dean and Jalen Carter and Trayvon Walker and Kwai Walker,
- 30:36Speaker 1: and the list goes on and on and on, and
- 30:38Speaker 1: your name kind of gets buried. I think he's worked
- 30:40Speaker 1: his way up to being a top ten pick based
- 30:42Speaker 1: on the combine performance and what he's done over the
- 30:44Speaker 1: course of his career.
- 30:46Speaker 3: That's a good one, Peter, I love it.
- 30:47Speaker 4: He was our top rated senior defensive player coming into
- 30:50Speaker 4: the fall based off as junior tape.
- 30:52Speaker 3: He was at the top of the board last year.
- 30:54Speaker 3: Really talented guy, man.
- 30:55Speaker 4: I'll say this like, I'm not saying he's more talented
- 30:59Speaker 4: than Jalen Carter, but when we had a bunch of
- 31:01Speaker 4: Georgia defensive players in last year's Senior Bowl, so you
- 31:04Speaker 4: know that whole defense was loaded. Obviously, watch a ton
- 31:06Speaker 4: of tape on that unit. I saw him play live
- 31:09Speaker 4: a couple of times, and Jalen Carter definitely flashed, but
- 31:13Speaker 4: Nolan or Nolan Smith flashed more to me than Jail
- 31:15Speaker 4: really yeah, and so we you know, then when we
- 31:18Speaker 4: got into the actual you know dig you know, deep
- 31:21Speaker 4: dive email over the summer. Man, You're like, okay, this
- 31:23Speaker 4: this guy's super talented. So then I think he was
- 31:26Speaker 4: gonna run four threes.
- 31:27Speaker 3: At the combine. I didn't know about that. That's Jim.
- 31:30Speaker 1: He threw his phone. He was like pissed. He ran
- 31:31Speaker 1: four three nine. He wanted faster.
- 31:33Speaker 3: That's insane. That's insane.
- 31:35Speaker 4: So yeah, Man as an outside linebacker, kind of a
- 31:37Speaker 4: do it all outside linebacker.
- 31:39Speaker 3: He's a really cool player.
- 31:40Speaker 4: And again you talk about talk about the person. I
- 31:42Speaker 4: got to meet him at the SEC media days back
- 31:44Speaker 4: in August or July or whatever that was. And again
- 31:47Speaker 4: just to really put together guy, really really sharp.
- 31:50Speaker 3: I don't I don't know how you miss on Nolan Smith.
- 31:52Speaker 3: I really don't.
- 31:53Speaker 1: All Right, who's your next guy?
- 31:55Speaker 3: Next guy is Cody Mauck from North Kota State. Love him,
- 32:00Speaker 3: Love this guy. I'm on record. I've probably spoken too
- 32:03Speaker 3: much about Cody over.
- 32:04Speaker 4: The last few months, but uh, you know, to me,
- 32:06Speaker 4: he's the only five position offensive lineman in this year's draft.
- 32:10Speaker 4: Played left tackle at North Kota State.
- 32:11Speaker 3: Made it look easy.
- 32:12Speaker 4: I mean, his tape was as when you talk about
- 32:15Speaker 4: what tape's fun to watch, I think Cody Maux's tape
- 32:18Speaker 4: was as fun as any player in this draft.
- 32:19Speaker 3: You know, just him just wearing.
- 32:21Speaker 4: People out at that level comes down here to Tomobile.
- 32:24Speaker 4: Plays guard, plays center. A lot of teams thought he
- 32:27Speaker 4: might be able to play that, and now they've seen
- 32:29Speaker 4: him do it, so it's not you know, scouts always
- 32:31Speaker 4: talk about quote unquote blind projections. They want to see
- 32:33Speaker 4: him do it first. Now we've seen Cody play all
- 32:35Speaker 4: five spots. I think he played left tackle, center, and
- 32:38Speaker 4: right guard in the Senior Bowl game, so you can
- 32:41Speaker 4: move around within a game. He's got the brain to
- 32:43Speaker 4: handle that. And I think what gets lost and like
- 32:46Speaker 4: the flowing red locks and the no front teeth and
- 32:49Speaker 4: all that.
- 32:49Speaker 3: This dude's an unbelievable athlete. He really is.
- 32:52Speaker 4: Like he's nasty on tape and he wears people out.
- 32:56Speaker 4: But this dude is such a good athlete. So to me,
- 32:58Speaker 4: I don't think there's thirty one better players in the draft.
- 33:00Speaker 4: I know we only have thirty one picks in the
- 33:02Speaker 4: first round, but I mean if I had a first
- 33:04Speaker 4: round pick, if I was a GM, I mean, this
- 33:05Speaker 4: guy would be an easy because wherever you have your
- 33:08Speaker 4: kneed up front, you're gonna be able to plug him
- 33:10Speaker 4: in and to me, he's going to be a pro
- 33:11Speaker 4: Bowl level player.
- 33:12Speaker 1: I love Cody Maunk flowing red hair and no front teeth,
- 33:16Speaker 1: and you bury that that's the fifteenth thing you said.
- 33:18Speaker 1: I love that he's an incredible personality. We'd love to
- 33:21Speaker 1: get to know him during the senior ball practices. My
- 33:27Speaker 1: next one again Chalk. You might say, come on, Sregger,
- 33:32Speaker 1: you're just going with the biggest names, but I love
- 33:33Speaker 1: a blue chip player. I'm going with b Jean Robinson.
- 33:37Speaker 1: I've telling you I've been watching this guy for years. Obviously,
- 33:40Speaker 1: you could spot talent at the college level. There's a
- 33:42Speaker 1: lot of great running backs, but I feel like he's
- 33:43Speaker 1: a cut above. I feel like he's the best running
- 33:45Speaker 1: back to enter a draft since maybe Jonathan Taylor, and
- 33:48Speaker 1: I think he might be the best running back as
- 33:51Speaker 1: a rookie since Saquon Like this guy. I watch him.
- 33:54Speaker 1: It seems like he's floating on air everything I touch him.
- 33:57Speaker 1: The time he touches the ball, he goes he can
- 33:58Speaker 1: catch the ball. I know running back is not a
- 34:01Speaker 1: cool thing in the first round anymore. I have him
- 34:03Speaker 1: going in the top ten. I think the Eagles take him,
- 34:05Speaker 1: even though the Eagles never take running I just think
- 34:07Speaker 1: there are very few blue chip players in this draft.
- 34:10Speaker 1: And I'm not knocking the draft that you don't watch
- 34:12Speaker 1: the draft because of the amount of blue chip players.
- 34:14Speaker 1: You watch the draft because you want to see who
- 34:16Speaker 1: your team gets. This guy is a blue chip player,
- 34:18Speaker 1: and if this draft was ten years ago, he might
- 34:20Speaker 1: go first overall. If this draft was twenty years ago,
- 34:23Speaker 1: he might go first overall. In this year's draft, he
- 34:25Speaker 1: might go twentieth because the running back position is so undervalued.
- 34:29Speaker 1: I love watching him play. The comparisons I make art
- 34:32Speaker 1: to Saquon, but people have more historical ones. Have you
- 34:35Speaker 1: had a chance to watch Bijon at all? And what
- 34:37Speaker 1: is you in your take on his game?
- 34:38Speaker 3: I agree with everything you just said.
- 34:41Speaker 4: You know the hard part in this role now is
- 34:45Speaker 4: you know when you're a scout, when you're working in
- 34:46Speaker 4: the league. I wasn't on social media, you know, I
- 34:50Speaker 4: wasn't on the internet. Like you make your own evail
- 34:52Speaker 4: and then once you feel good about your eveil, then
- 34:54Speaker 4: you can maybe open it up and see what else
- 34:56Speaker 4: is out there, what other people are thinking about players.
- 34:58Speaker 3: But in this role, obviously I live on.
- 35:00Speaker 4: Social media to a degree, so you see all this
- 35:04Speaker 4: stuff about Bijeon, right, and you hear about it, you see,
- 35:06Speaker 4: and then when I actually sat down to watch him,
- 35:08Speaker 4: is like, wow, this guy is This guy's the truth.
- 35:10Speaker 4: I mean, I'm with you there. There might not be
- 35:13Speaker 4: you know, one or two better players in this entire draft.
- 35:15Speaker 4: He makes it look easy, Peter. I mean, he just
- 35:17Speaker 4: he makes it look easy. You know, at the highest
- 35:19Speaker 4: level of college football, the run stuff looks easy. He
- 35:22Speaker 4: just runs with an ease, He catches it with an ease.
- 35:24Speaker 4: I think he's going to be a big time, big
- 35:26Speaker 4: time player. And I'm with you, like ten ten could
- 35:28Speaker 4: be a cool landing spot because Eagles GM Howie Roseman's
- 35:31Speaker 4: on record he's saying like he likes a zig when
- 35:34Speaker 4: other people are zagging, right, And if the league's going
- 35:36Speaker 4: away from running back right now, you know, in coach Belichick,
- 35:40Speaker 4: who I worked for for for all those years in
- 35:41Speaker 4: New England, like they're always looking for market, you know, efficiencies,
- 35:45Speaker 4: and and if teams are passing on running backs and
- 35:47Speaker 4: they don't see value there early, but then maybe it's
- 35:49Speaker 4: going to be one of these gms that that that.
- 35:51Speaker 3: Is going to do something the opposite.
- 35:52Speaker 4: So yeah, man, such a such an easy player to
- 35:55Speaker 4: to like and fun, fun player, fun player.
- 35:57Speaker 1: Give me your third name. Who's your third guy you
- 35:59Speaker 1: want us to look out for?
- 36:01Speaker 4: Little two for one, I'll go with the Brown brothers
- 36:04Speaker 4: from Illinois. I was gonna go with Sidney Brown, but
- 36:08Speaker 4: throwing his twin brother Chase as well.
- 36:10Speaker 3: To me, Sidney's a guy that, frankly, like I was
- 36:13Speaker 3: too low on.
- 36:13Speaker 4: There's always a few guys that show up in Mobile
- 36:15Speaker 4: that are are better players, and I give them credit
- 36:17Speaker 4: for off the tape.
- 36:18Speaker 3: I'll say this.
- 36:19Speaker 4: As soon as those two guys get off the bus.
- 36:21Speaker 4: They get off the bus from the airport, there's like
- 36:23Speaker 4: a little registration room where we start, I mean player
- 36:25Speaker 4: registration days.
- 36:26Speaker 3: Crazy.
- 36:26Speaker 4: They got medical stuff, they got psychological testing, they've got
- 36:30Speaker 4: photo shoots, they've got all this stuff.
- 36:32Speaker 3: Those two guys get off the bus, and.
- 36:33Speaker 4: I'm telling you, Peter, like within a minute You're like, Okay,
- 36:35Speaker 4: these guys are different, like the Brown brothers are different.
- 36:38Speaker 4: Sydney's a little more outgoing, got got you know, like
- 36:40Speaker 4: a little more charisma than Chase. Chase is a little
- 36:43Speaker 4: more a little more laid back. But but there they
- 36:46Speaker 4: are special dudes. They've they've got a great story. You
- 36:49Speaker 4: can google it. I'm not going to wear out your listeners,
- 36:51Speaker 4: but google the story about the Brown brothers and in
- 36:53Speaker 4: their background.
- 36:53Speaker 3: Really cool. But Sidney's like this.
- 36:56Speaker 4: Rocked up Bob Sanders looking strong safety, right, and so
- 37:00Speaker 4: you want to say, you just want to say box
- 37:01Speaker 4: safety because of how he's built. He's just like this
- 37:04Speaker 4: chiseled up specimen. And then you more you watch, you're like, man,
- 37:07Speaker 4: he's there. He just made a playing coverage and then
- 37:09Speaker 4: it made another playing coverage. So he ends a season
- 37:12Speaker 4: with seven interceptions, and he's got some like Johnny on
- 37:15Speaker 4: the Spot tip ball stuff and.
- 37:16Speaker 3: He's making plays.
- 37:17Speaker 4: He comes down here to the Senior Bowl and it's
- 37:19Speaker 4: kind of like Jalen Petrie last year from Baylor, who
- 37:22Speaker 4: had a great rookieyear for the Houston Texans in the
- 37:24Speaker 4: one on one stuff with tight ends and receivers, like
- 37:26Speaker 4: Sidney was blanketing people and making plays on the ball,
- 37:29Speaker 4: like he if he's around the ball, he's going to
- 37:31Speaker 4: finish on it.
- 37:32Speaker 3: You know.
- 37:32Speaker 4: Like we talk about players that can't find the ball
- 37:34Speaker 4: or they can't play the ball, like Sidney's the opposite.
- 37:37Speaker 4: He's unbelievable. When he was when he's in the reach
- 37:39Speaker 4: of the ball, so I just think Sidney's a guy
- 37:41Speaker 4: that and then all the testing, like the Combine stuff
- 37:44Speaker 4: was ridiculous. Forty inch vertical, eleven foot broad all that
- 37:48Speaker 4: high end testing stuff.
- 37:49Speaker 3: So to me, he's a no brainer.
- 37:50Speaker 4: I think he's worked himself up into somewhere in probably
- 37:53Speaker 4: the second round range, which probably was he started off
- 37:55Speaker 4: the process, probably in the fourth and he's just one
- 37:58Speaker 4: of my favorite dudes. I would want him in my
- 38:00Speaker 4: locker room. He's going to be infectious, He's going to
- 38:02Speaker 4: be a captain. Just loves Sidney Brown and and love
- 38:05Speaker 4: his brother Chase too.
- 38:06Speaker 1: That's awesome. My fourth name, I'm going with Will McDonald,
- 38:10Speaker 1: the fourth out of Iowa State. I love this kid.
- 38:12Speaker 1: I love his story, and I like the fact that
- 38:14Speaker 1: he competed at the Combine despite a one hundred and
- 38:17Speaker 1: four fever that he came down with and said, hell,
- 38:20Speaker 1: I'm going for it. I'm trying to ultimate competitor. Matt
- 38:23Speaker 1: Campbell speaks the world of him. I've got him going
- 38:25Speaker 1: in the first round. I don't see many other monks
- 38:27Speaker 1: having him there. They have him as a second round pick.
- 38:28Speaker 1: He might be a second round pick. I love what
- 38:31Speaker 1: he did at Iowa State. I think that he is
- 38:32Speaker 1: an athletic freak. I also like the way he's made
- 38:35Speaker 1: up and kind of the way he had And I
- 38:37Speaker 1: know he was a senior Bowl guy. What'd you think
- 38:39Speaker 1: of him when you got to meet him.
- 38:40Speaker 3: Well, you saved me, Peter, you saved me a spot.
- 38:42Speaker 3: I was gonna say, Will McDonald's go with.
- 38:45Speaker 1: Him, to go with him as your fourth it's not.
- 38:48Speaker 4: It's not, but I was hoping maybe you would throw
- 38:50Speaker 4: him in there.
- 38:51Speaker 3: I'll say this about Will.
- 38:52Speaker 4: I think you're right. I think he's going to be
- 38:53Speaker 4: a first round pick. Talking to guys in the league,
- 38:55Speaker 4: there's way too much to like. I mean, he's got
- 38:57Speaker 4: production on paper. He's got thirty some sacks over the
- 38:59Speaker 4: last three years, and he wasn't really put in a
- 39:01Speaker 4: position to get sacks in that defense. You know, like
- 39:04Speaker 4: he was really always tied tight to the tackle. You
- 39:07Speaker 4: never saw him. You never got to see him like
- 39:09Speaker 4: really out wide and just like coming off the edge.
- 39:11Speaker 4: He's probably the bendiest pass rusher in this year's draft.
- 39:13Speaker 4: He's long, he's put on a bunch of weight through
- 39:16Speaker 4: the process. He's already put on you know, ten to
- 39:18Speaker 4: fifteen pounds since the Senior Bowl, So he's trending in the.
- 39:21Speaker 3: Right direction that way.
- 39:22Speaker 4: Like you talked about the athletes six to nine high
- 39:24Speaker 4: jumper in high school, I think the team, the teams
- 39:27Speaker 4: talking to him, they love the competitor, they love the
- 39:29Speaker 4: fact that he had a fever and a lot of
- 39:31Speaker 4: people would have shut themselves down and not done the
- 39:33Speaker 4: combine thing, and he did it. I think he's helped
- 39:35Speaker 4: himself as much as anyone through this process. He's talking
- 39:38Speaker 4: to a head coach the other day. He thinks he's
- 39:40Speaker 4: going to come out of the shoots next year and
- 39:41Speaker 4: be a double digit sack guy. And if there's a
- 39:43Speaker 4: love for him in the league like that, if coaches
- 39:45Speaker 4: think this guy could be a double digit.
- 39:46Speaker 3: Sack guy, we didn't have one last year.
- 39:48Speaker 4: Aiden Hutchinson, I think had the league with rookies and
- 39:50Speaker 4: he was like eight or nine. If there's teams out
- 39:53Speaker 4: there that feel like this guy could get ten secks
- 39:54Speaker 4: as a rookie, he's going to go in the top
- 39:56Speaker 4: thirty one pick.
- 39:57Speaker 3: So I think you're going to be right on that.
- 39:59Speaker 1: Peter keive us another name.
- 40:02Speaker 3: I would go with.
- 40:03Speaker 4: Michael Wilson from Stanford a little later down the road.
- 40:05Speaker 4: It's not a first second round guy like we've been
- 40:07Speaker 4: talking about. But Michael Wilson's a guy again probably showed
- 40:10Speaker 4: up a lot better than I would have thought. You know,
- 40:11Speaker 4: going through the Stanford tape, you know, you really polished,
- 40:14Speaker 4: You really like the route runner, you really like the hands.
- 40:17Speaker 4: You love how they talk about him, David Sewan, those
- 40:19Speaker 4: guys at Stanford like rave about about Michael Wilson. And
- 40:23Speaker 4: when you said put your favorite group together, I've thought about, Okay,
- 40:26Speaker 4: if I was putting a team together, who would I
- 40:27Speaker 4: want in my locker room.
- 40:29Speaker 3: Michael Wilson's different.
- 40:30Speaker 4: He reminds me a little of Terry mclaur in that way,
- 40:33Speaker 4: like when when Terry, when Terry came down to the
- 40:34Speaker 4: Senior Bowl, I told every team that called that year,
- 40:39Speaker 4: like they said, Jim, who would you want? And Terry
- 40:41Speaker 4: was always my first guy because of first and foremost
- 40:44Speaker 4: the person that Terry was like, and I was on
- 40:46Speaker 4: I was on records, and I think Terry could be
- 40:48Speaker 4: the CEO of a Fortune five hundred company when he's
- 40:50Speaker 4: done playing football. Like that's how that's how intelligent and
- 40:53Speaker 4: driven the guy is. And Michael Wilson's different too. I
- 40:55Speaker 4: mean for the wide receiver position. He just gets it.
- 40:58Speaker 3: When you talk to him, you feel like.
- 40:59Speaker 4: You're talking to like a thirty year old grown up
- 41:01Speaker 4: and then coming down here like bring it back. On
- 41:03Speaker 4: the field, he's he's more explosive than I gave him
- 41:06Speaker 4: credit for, or plays faster than he tested. You watch
- 41:08Speaker 4: our tape and he's getting deep on guys he only
- 41:11Speaker 4: ran four or five or high four fours, whatever it was. Well,
- 41:14Speaker 4: he consistently got to deep levels of the field against
- 41:16Speaker 4: guys that ran four to three at and he so
- 41:18Speaker 4: he plays fast, he plays explosively, explosive.
- 41:21Speaker 3: In a draft where there's.
- 41:22Speaker 4: A bunch of five eight, five nine, one hundred and
- 41:25Speaker 4: seventy pound guys, this guy's six foot two, two hundred
- 41:27Speaker 4: and fifteen pounds. So yeah, I just don't think you
- 41:30Speaker 4: can go wrong. He had some injury stuff at Stanford.
- 41:32Speaker 4: You know, if he stays healthy, I think this guy's
- 41:34Speaker 4: a really good starter in the league.
- 41:36Speaker 1: Love it all right, We're gonna leave our last picks,
- 41:38Speaker 1: and these are the guys that we love and that
- 41:40Speaker 1: we can't wait to see get drafted. My last one
- 41:42Speaker 1: is a wide receiver. Was at the Senior Bowl comes
- 41:45Speaker 1: from a factory of wide receivers of late who all
- 41:48Speaker 1: the similar build and yet, for whatever reason, Jim, I
- 41:50Speaker 1: feel like you and I are the only ones on
- 41:52Speaker 1: the island who have been pushing this guy as a
- 41:53Speaker 1: first round pick. I'm going with Jonathan Mingo. Love Mingo.
- 41:58Speaker 1: Love that he's six foot two, two twenty, Love that
- 42:00Speaker 1: he's built like a different wide receiver shape than most
- 42:03Speaker 1: of the guys that you're seeing in these first round bocks.
- 42:06Speaker 1: I look at the history. I know he was injured,
- 42:08Speaker 1: I know he's got issues as far as production at
- 42:11Speaker 1: the college level. But I look at aj Brown, I
- 42:13Speaker 1: look at Elijah Moore, I look at DK Metcalf, and
- 42:16Speaker 1: I look at Ole Miss and I say, here's a
- 42:18Speaker 1: six to two, two twenty chiseled wide receiver who has
- 42:21Speaker 1: good route running from what I see, and actually has
- 42:24Speaker 1: good hands, and yet he's considered some crazy project because
- 42:27Speaker 1: he didn't have one hundred catches a game. I'm going
- 42:30Speaker 1: with Jonathan Mingo. I know you know the guy really well.
- 42:33Speaker 1: What are you hearing on, Mingo? And do you think
- 42:35Speaker 1: there's a chance he goes in the first round? As
- 42:36Speaker 1: I have it, the Saints taking him at the end
- 42:38Speaker 1: of the first round.
- 42:39Speaker 4: That would be a cool pick down here on the
- 42:41Speaker 4: Gulf Coast. This is the Mobile is a big Saints
- 42:44Speaker 4: fan base. I know they would be fired up about
- 42:45Speaker 4: an SEC guy there. I'm with Jan Mingo, I'm with
- 42:49Speaker 4: you on him. I'll say this, I'll throw another name,
- 42:51Speaker 4: Ole Miss name out, Dawson Knox.
- 42:54Speaker 3: Dawson Knox.
- 42:54Speaker 4: I mean, go back and look at Dawson Knox's college
- 42:56Speaker 4: production at ole Miss. So you know, John started out
- 42:59Speaker 4: that year hot, and by the time I saw him
- 43:01Speaker 4: in mid season against LSU, they were throwing the ball
- 43:03Speaker 4: to Malik Heath on the other side because you know,
- 43:06Speaker 4: I had done enough early in the season where he
- 43:08Speaker 4: was starting to pull coverage his way. So they started
- 43:10Speaker 4: feeding Malik Keith on the other side, which is which
- 43:13Speaker 4: is smart my whole miss. But but I'm with you.
- 43:15Speaker 4: There's a good track record there. This guy is a springy,
- 43:18Speaker 4: springy athlete for someone with that size that's six '
- 43:20Speaker 4: to two. Again, we're talking about a guy that's like
- 43:22Speaker 4: five six inches and forty to fifty pounds heavier than
- 43:26Speaker 4: some of these guys being mocked, you.
- 43:27Speaker 1: Know, all the other first round guys.
- 43:29Speaker 4: Yeah, right, so I'm with you on Mingo. I think
- 43:33Speaker 4: he's going to be. You know, we always do the
- 43:34Speaker 4: better pro than college player thing. I think he's gonna
- 43:37Speaker 4: end up, like a lot of these guys from Ole Missill,
- 43:39Speaker 4: end up being a you know, at least production wise,
- 43:40Speaker 4: the better pro than he was college player.
- 43:42Speaker 1: Who's your last player that you got before we let
- 43:45Speaker 1: you go? Give us the last player one of your
- 43:46Speaker 1: favorite players in this draft? Who is it?
- 43:48Speaker 4: Jim Naggy, Well, it probably goes back to my Seahawks
- 43:52Speaker 4: background a little bit, and that'd be Julius Brentz, the
- 43:54Speaker 4: corner from Kansas State. Again like at a time, and well,
- 43:57Speaker 4: we're talking about rare stuff.
- 43:59Speaker 3: This guy's got rare stuff. He's got the.
- 44:00Speaker 4: Longest wingspan of any corner since Scout started doing the
- 44:03Speaker 4: wingspan thing.
- 44:04Speaker 3: That was only like fifteen years ago.
- 44:06Speaker 4: Year we didn't always do the wingspanl He's the longest
- 44:10Speaker 4: corner on record. He's an eleven six broad jumper, he's
- 44:13Speaker 4: a forty two inch vertical jumper. And the difference between
- 44:16Speaker 4: him and most sixty three corners, I mean, this guy's
- 44:18Speaker 4: got fluid movement skills. And again, Richard Sherman came out.
- 44:21Speaker 4: I was way too low on Richard Sherman. I got
- 44:24Speaker 4: caught up in some of his movement. I didn't give
- 44:26Speaker 4: him enough credit for his high level instincts and ball skills.
- 44:29Speaker 4: This guy can move now, man, he is fluid. He
- 44:32Speaker 4: had a great week down here. I just think you
- 44:34Speaker 4: know the upside of the player, Hardy. How do you
- 44:37Speaker 4: throw around a guy that's six foot three with pterodactyl arms,
- 44:41Speaker 4: that can that can jump out of the gym.
- 44:42Speaker 3: I mean, just put the ball around him. He's gonna
- 44:44Speaker 3: he's gonna find a way to go get it.
- 44:46Speaker 1: How many pounds is hey, what's the way at He's.
- 44:48Speaker 4: Two hundred pounds, So we're talking a six three trend corner.
- 44:52Speaker 4: He reminds me of a guy named Ben Saint ju
- 44:53Speaker 4: Just who starts for the Washington Commanders right now. Ben
- 44:56Speaker 4: went the third round out of Minnesota a few years
- 44:58Speaker 4: ago when we had him here, and I think Julie
- 45:00Speaker 4: is coming out, you know, probably probably going to be
- 45:03Speaker 4: a higher draft pick than than Ben. They're just similar
- 45:06Speaker 4: body to guy. So yeah, man, I again my sea
- 45:08Speaker 4: hockey thing at corner. Give me some Julius prints.
- 45:12Speaker 1: I love it. Jim a couple quick rapid fire questions
- 45:16Speaker 1: for you before we let you go. Your favorite player
- 45:20Speaker 1: to ever enter the Senior Bowl and play Senier Bowl Week,
- 45:24Speaker 1: as you were the executive director of the past five years,
- 45:26Speaker 1: who's the guy that you look back on, You're like, gosh,
- 45:28Speaker 1: I was so happy to have that guy down in Mobile.
- 45:31Speaker 4: I would say Justin Herbert, And I would say that
- 45:34Speaker 4: for a couple of reasons, Like Justin was already going
- 45:36Speaker 4: to be at worst a mid first round pick, right
- 45:39Speaker 4: Like he wasn't going to get out of the middle
- 45:41Speaker 4: of the first round. He still chose to come down here,
- 45:45Speaker 4: put himself out there in the greatest part about it
- 45:48Speaker 4: with the narrative on Justin was oh, he's introverted. You
- 45:51Speaker 4: know what kind of leadership, you know what kind of
- 45:53Speaker 4: competitor is this guy? And I think he put all
- 45:56Speaker 4: that to rest down here in Mobile. I mean he
- 45:58Speaker 4: connected with his teammates again, similar to Bryce Young, who
- 46:01Speaker 4: he talked about. I mean, Justin's comfortable in his own skin,
- 46:04Speaker 4: he's genuine teammates, all that from him, and I just think,
- 46:08Speaker 4: you know, having him down here and him buying into
- 46:10Speaker 4: what he could get out of Senior Bowl Week.
- 46:12Speaker 3: Man, I'll always be indebted to him, and he's.
- 46:14Speaker 4: He's one of the guys like he followed up after
- 46:16Speaker 4: the game and called me and thanked me for letting him.
- 46:18Speaker 1: Go down, and he was the MVP of that day.
- 46:20Speaker 1: I remember I was like, what.
- 46:21Speaker 4: Are you talking about, Like, you don't need to thank me, man,
- 46:22Speaker 4: I need to thank you for coming and being a
- 46:24Speaker 4: part of this thing.
- 46:25Speaker 1: I'll never forget interviewing him, but right before the draft
- 46:28Speaker 1: in twenty twenty, it was the COVID year and he
- 46:31Speaker 1: had won Rose Bowl MVP, Senior Bowl MVP, and the
- 46:34Speaker 1: narrative was he can't lead, he can't win a big game.
- 46:38Speaker 1: He can't you know, he's got no alpha skills. He's
- 46:42Speaker 1: just a robot that could throw. And I remember asking
- 46:43Speaker 1: him about it and he says, I'm going to cut
- 46:45Speaker 1: you off right there, respectfully. And you know it's him
- 46:47Speaker 1: with the long hair and he's got the look. And
- 46:50Speaker 1: he says, just before even going with that, can you
- 46:53Speaker 1: just do me a favor and ask some of my
- 46:54Speaker 1: teammates before we even mentioned that kind of commentary. And
- 46:56Speaker 1: I'm like, wow, that's a good answer. I like that.
- 46:58Speaker 1: So he's one of those quiet, confident guys and their
- 47:01Speaker 1: leaders lead in different ways. And Justin Herbert's not gonna
- 47:04Speaker 1: be the loudest guy. He's not gonna be great on
- 47:05Speaker 1: NFL films, Mike up. But I think you saw what
- 47:07Speaker 1: we all saw the last few years back when you
- 47:10Speaker 1: had him at the Senior Bowl.
- 47:11Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, no doubt, no doubt.
- 47:13Speaker 4: And I've said this before, but like you watch after
- 47:16Speaker 4: the game, there's a shot. There was a shot on
- 47:18Speaker 4: the NFL network post game when all the players are
- 47:20Speaker 4: coming out and shaking hands and doing stuff. Man, it
- 47:23Speaker 4: was both teams big small. I mean it didn't Matt like,
- 47:27Speaker 4: everyone kind of was gravitating up to Justin. And for
- 47:30Speaker 4: that to materialize over the course of like literally seven
- 47:33Speaker 4: days that some of those you know, that respect, even
- 47:36Speaker 4: if it was just the respect level, says a lot.
- 47:38Speaker 4: But no, man, it's and it's been awesome to watch
- 47:40Speaker 4: him his career kind of take off. I can't wait
- 47:43Speaker 4: to see what he's going to do this year with
- 47:44Speaker 4: Kellen Moore in La.
- 47:46Speaker 1: Jim, your words carry so much waiting around the league.
- 47:49Speaker 1: You're one of the most respected guys when it comes
- 47:50Speaker 1: to not only the NFL Draft, but just personnel and
- 47:53Speaker 1: scouting in general. No one's got a bad word to
- 47:56Speaker 1: say about you, and you're doing a fine job with
- 47:57Speaker 1: the Senior Bowl. I can't I can't thank you enough
- 47:59Speaker 1: for joining the podcast. It was the perfect guest and
- 48:01Speaker 1: this is the perfect conversation before the draft about ten
- 48:04Speaker 1: days out as we're recording.
- 48:06Speaker 3: This, well, Peter, thank you so much.
- 48:08Speaker 1: Man.
- 48:08Speaker 3: That's really nice. It's awesome to be on the show. Man.
- 48:11Speaker 4: I'd love to love to come on again. Maybe we
- 48:13Speaker 4: can do it after the draft or something. But love
- 48:16Speaker 4: you're working Good Morning Football man, love the show. You
- 48:19Speaker 4: guys do an awesome job, so entertaining, such such a
- 48:21Speaker 4: great thing to wake up to every day.
- 48:23Speaker 3: We got it in the office.
- 48:24Speaker 4: Whoever comes into the Senior Bowl office every day, whoever
- 48:26Speaker 4: gets in first has to turn the TV on and
- 48:28Speaker 4: it's always on. It's always on Good Morning Football. So
- 48:30Speaker 4: when we walk in here every day, are you guys
- 48:32Speaker 4: are on with us?
- 48:33Speaker 1: Take that straight hand and Robin Roberts and George Stepanopolis
- 48:37Speaker 1: eat it. Yeah, thank you, I appreciate it. We'll take
- 48:39Speaker 1: the viewers in Mobile, Alabama all day long. Jim Naggy,
- 48:43Speaker 1: you're awesome, dude. Executive director of the Senior Bowl and
- 48:46Speaker 1: as plugged in as anybody with this stuff.
- 48:47Speaker 3: Thanks dude, yep, thanks Peter.
- 48:50Speaker 1: That was fun. Aaron, I'm gonna ask you, you think we
- 48:51Speaker 1: could do this. We could put up a tweet either
- 48:55Speaker 1: from my Twitter thing or whatever. But we have a
- 48:58Speaker 1: two side by side lists players we love and it's
- 49:02Speaker 1: Jim Naggy's five names and it's my five names, and
- 49:06Speaker 1: viewers and listeners can go google all the highlights and on.
- 49:09Speaker 1: So maybe we'll do that. Maybe we'll ask for that
- 49:11Speaker 1: in addition to getting a good social media clip. Draft
- 49:15Speaker 1: is now less than ten days away. I feel pretty good,
- 49:19Speaker 1: and I got to tell you I'm excited for it.
- 49:21Speaker 1: It's a sports event that has no agenda other than
- 49:25Speaker 1: just good Vibes guys getting drafted, and every team and
- 49:29Speaker 1: fan base is like feeling positive. Can I tell you
- 49:33Speaker 1: that I saw a movie that I think is like
- 49:37Speaker 1: maybe I don't know if it's my favorite movie, but
- 49:39Speaker 1: like just like good Vibes movie, it felt like a
- 49:41Speaker 1: throwback and I have to talk about it, and I
- 49:43Speaker 1: know you haven't seen it yet. I loved Air with
- 49:47Speaker 1: Damon and Affleck and I went into this thing, dude,
- 49:50Speaker 1: like alright, I get it. It's another it's a bite
- 49:53Speaker 1: of the apple because the last dance was popular and
- 49:56Speaker 1: everyone's Michael Jordan, okay, and now we're gonna do the
- 49:57Speaker 1: Michael Jordan's Shoe movie. I kind of roll my eyes
- 50:00Speaker 1: and affleck. I see him on you know, US Weekly
- 50:03Speaker 1: and with j Low, and he's doing one hundred interviews
- 50:06Speaker 1: promote this thing, and I'm like, here's the scenario. My
- 50:09Speaker 1: wife's best friend, Courtney, was getting married on Saturday, and
- 50:14Speaker 1: she's a bride'smaid in the wedding, and it was one
- 50:17Speaker 1: of those deals like where it was like I was
- 50:18Speaker 1: in my twenties again and I'm not a part of
- 50:21Speaker 1: the wedding party. My wife's getting hair and makeup done
- 50:24Speaker 1: at ten am, and I had all day and no agenda,
- 50:28Speaker 1: nothing to do, I had no responsibilities. So me and
- 50:33Speaker 1: another one of the bride'smaid's husbands we went to see
- 50:36Speaker 1: this movie. And I come in at ten thirty in
- 50:38Speaker 1: the morning to a movie theater. This is like the
- 50:40Speaker 1: greatest day you can imagine for a guy who's got
- 50:43Speaker 1: a six week old child at home and a six
- 50:45Speaker 1: year old child who's keeping me up at all hours,
- 50:47Speaker 1: Like get to go to this movie. And from the
- 50:51Speaker 1: very start where it starts with dire straits money for
- 50:55Speaker 1: Nothing as the opening song. It is a just a
- 50:58Speaker 1: soundtrack from nineteen eighty four of hits. I don't know
- 51:01Speaker 1: how Amazon had the budget for this thing. They had
- 51:05Speaker 1: born in the US. They have like, you know, massive
- 51:10Speaker 1: hits from start to finish, and they go with the
- 51:13Speaker 1: movie and every song has a link to the story
- 51:16Speaker 1: and the story itself. There was no romance in the movie.
- 51:18Speaker 1: There were no politics in the movie. It was you know,
- 51:21Speaker 1: I'm rooting for this little upstart, the corporate behemoth Nike,
- 51:25Speaker 1: Like that's how you come up. You're like, oh, capitalism rules.
- 51:28Speaker 1: At the end, like it's the it's a fun movie
- 51:31Speaker 1: and it's just soaked in nostalgia and the way that
- 51:36Speaker 1: you know, Ben Affleck plays Phil Knight. I've read Shoe Dog.
- 51:39Speaker 1: I have such great reverence for everything about Phil Knight,
- 51:42Speaker 1: and then Affleck comes in and kind of takes the
- 51:44Speaker 1: piss out of them but kind of doesn't and it's
- 51:46Speaker 1: just you appreciate all of it. If you are a
- 51:49Speaker 1: sports movie fan. It is the most low investment, low
- 51:54Speaker 1: stakes movie you can watch. There is a ninety minute
- 51:57Speaker 1: movie that you can watch, enjoy, be just dripped in
- 52:00Speaker 1: eighties nostalgia. If you love hoops, if you love you
- 52:04Speaker 1: know the story of how Nike beat out Adidas, end
- 52:08Speaker 1: and converse to get Michael Jordan. I can never imagine
- 52:11Speaker 1: this being a feature film. I absolutely loved it.
- 52:13Speaker 2: Oh man, well, I'm excited to see it. It reminds
- 52:16Speaker 2: me a little bit of a Showtime where they have
- 52:19Speaker 2: the whole storyline in Showtime about Magic Johnson, winning Time,
- 52:23Speaker 2: Winning Time, about the Showtime. Yeah, yeah, yeah, winning Time.
- 52:28Speaker 1: It's funny because in that one, it's like, here's Jerry West,
- 52:32Speaker 1: Here's Magic Johnson, and their portrayals are at times they
- 52:37Speaker 1: weren't favorable, and they certainly weren't well liked by the subjects.
- 52:41Speaker 1: Michael Jordan has one word in this movie. You don't
- 52:43Speaker 1: see his face. It's all about his mother. It's all
- 52:46Speaker 1: about Sonny Vaccaro, who was the Nike basketball guy. And
- 52:51Speaker 1: then I'll tell you put Damon Bateman an Affleck in
- 52:56Speaker 1: a movie. I'm seeing it. I'm seeing it's Jason Bateman,
- 53:00Speaker 1: not the greatest, like third man in on a movie
- 53:02Speaker 1: I've never seen Ozark. I love Teen Wolf too, like
- 53:05Speaker 1: I have a lot of heart for Bateman. I love
- 53:07Speaker 1: Arrested development, but like he is perfectly casted in this movie,
- 53:11Speaker 1: and Viola Davis is perfectly casted in this movie. Can
- 53:15Speaker 1: you do me a favorite? Can you see it this
- 53:17Speaker 1: week so we could talk about it next week? Yeah?
- 53:19Speaker 2: Yeah, I have to see that in Mario, so that'll
- 53:21Speaker 2: take probably total of three hours, right.
- 53:24Speaker 1: Both just like they're like fast food and I don't
- 53:27Speaker 1: even know when Amazon's putting it on Amazon Prime, Amazon
- 53:29Speaker 1: Prime but partner of the NFL, by the way, probably soon.
- 53:32Speaker 1: It's you don't have to rush to the theater. But
- 53:34Speaker 1: like when they start with ah wan my MTV, I'm like,
- 53:38Speaker 1: all right, I'm in, let's go. And I don't know.
- 53:40Speaker 1: The movie was awesome. I loved it, So there you go.
- 53:42Speaker 1: My movie recommendation. Air. The NFL Draft is almost here.
- 53:47Speaker 1: Everybody tune in to watch. Please watch the NFL Network version.
- 53:50Speaker 1: I respect mel kiper, I like Rees Davis. I don't
- 53:53Speaker 1: know who else is on their crew, but I'm on
- 53:56Speaker 1: the NFL network, So please watch NFL Network. We've got
- 53:59Speaker 1: a really good group and for three days, I would
- 54:01Speaker 1: appreciate the viewership. You listen to my podcast, you might
- 54:03Speaker 1: as well watch us on TV. It's US DESPN we're partners,
- 54:07Speaker 1: but truly, I'm asking you to watch NFL Network. It
- 54:09Speaker 1: does us all a lot of good and I can't wait.
- 54:12Speaker 1: It's in Kansas City. It's one of my favorite cities
- 54:14Speaker 1: in the country. It's one of my favorite football towns. Aaron,
- 54:18Speaker 1: thank you for joining me on this podcast. We'll be
- 54:20Speaker 1: back next week. I don't know what we're doing exactly.
- 54:23Speaker 1: I actually think we're gonna record another one this week.
- 54:26Speaker 1: We'll see, and it's gonna be lightning fast and a quick,
- 54:29Speaker 1: rapid fire mock draft with someone that I really respect,
- 54:33Speaker 1: and I think it'll be really good. But until then,
- 54:36Speaker 1: The Season with Peter Schrager. Thank you to the iHeart folks,
- 54:39Speaker 1: Jason English and the House. As always, Aaron, thanks to you,
- 54:42Speaker 1: thanks to everyone at the NFL Network, and let's go
- 54:45Speaker 1: Draft season, best time of year. The Season with Peter
- 55:04Speaker 1: Schrager is a production of the NFL well and partnership
- 55:07Speaker 1: with iHeartRadio. For more podcasts from iHeartRadio, visit the iHeartRadio app,
