- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome to the Guitar Jet Podcast, where you'll skyrocket your
- 0:03Speaker 1: knowledge of theory, techniques, and fundamentals for guitar. Hey, it's
- 0:09Speaker 1: your Chief Guitar Instructor, Miles, and today I'm going to
- 0:11Speaker 1: tell you about three easy speed techniques for lead guitar.
- 0:16Speaker 1: And what makes these techniques easy is the fact you
- 0:20Speaker 1: don't need to have a lightning-fast picking hand to use them.
- 0:25Speaker 1: The first technique is single-direction sweeps. Usually, when we think
- 0:31Speaker 1: about sweep picking, we think about sweeping down, then up, down,
- 0:35Speaker 1: then up. And that can get tedious and difficult for
- 0:39Speaker 1: both the right and left hands. But with a single
- 0:41Speaker 1: direction sweep, you take an arpeggio shape, and then you
- 0:46Speaker 1: just sweep in a single direction, like down, down, down,
- 0:51Speaker 1: or up, up, up, if you're using three strings. The
- 0:55Speaker 1: second easy speed technique is tapping. Of course, when you're tapping,
- 1:00Speaker 1: you take your picking hand and usually use your index
- 1:05Speaker 1: or middle finger to play hammer-ons on the fretboard. And
- 1:10Speaker 1: once you hammer-on using your picking hand, you'll pull off
- 1:15Speaker 1: to a note on the fret hand and then hammer-on
- 1:19Speaker 1: to another note using the fret hand, creating groups of three. Generally,
- 1:23Speaker 1: that's how it works. But long story short, with tapping...
- 1:27Speaker 1: You can do really quick hammer-ons and pull-offs combining the
- 1:32Speaker 1: picking hand and the fret hand. And the final speed technique,
- 1:37Speaker 1: the third speed technique, is sliding. You can slide up
- 1:42Speaker 1: and down the neck at lightning-fast speeds, and it sounds awesome.
- 1:48Speaker 1: I think it's really fun to slide in a minor
- 1:52Speaker 1: pentatonic box shape. So let's say you're using A minor pentatonic.
- 1:57Speaker 1: You can slide from fret 5 to 7 on the A, D,
- 2:01Speaker 1: and G strings, and then slide from fret 5 to
- 2:05Speaker 1: 8 on the B and high E strings. And it
- 2:09Speaker 1: sounds awesome. It's speedy, and it looks really cool. So
- 2:14Speaker 1: those are the three easy speed techniques. Number one, single
- 2:18Speaker 1: direction sweep picking. Number two, tapping. Number three, sliding. Thank
- 2:24Speaker 1: you so much for listening to the show. subscribe to
