- 0:00Speaker 1: So today I'm some more a squid.
- 0:02Speaker 2: I'm here at Heavy to talk about my upcoming freak
- 0:05Speaker 2: show residency at the.
- 0:06Speaker 3: Tote Fantastic may Thanks for drawing for you tomorrow or squid.
- 0:12Speaker 3: Either is fine or both together preferably.
- 0:16Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 0:17Speaker 2: Yeah, if you're talking about me, best to say that,
- 0:20Speaker 2: best use both if you're talking about me, but talking
- 0:23Speaker 2: to me is.
- 0:24Speaker 3: Fine, Bey Maybel. Thanks for joining us today anyways.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Yeah, not a problem. Thanks for having me my pleasure.
- 0:31Speaker 3: So you're going to be taking up residency at the
- 0:33Speaker 3: Tote in Melbourne for forty second in Sunday is for
- 0:36Speaker 3: the Squids Sunday side show, kicking off on Sunday, March
- 0:39Speaker 3: twenty ninth.
- 0:40Speaker 4: Mate. So the first question is is the Tote ready
- 0:43Speaker 4: for you?
- 0:45Speaker 1: Well, they say they are. I trust their judgment.
- 0:48Speaker 2: You know they're it's It's not only is the Tote
- 0:53Speaker 2: still running, it's being run by people from crazy insane
- 0:58Speaker 2: punk bands, SOS.
- 1:02Speaker 1: The Toads.
- 1:03Speaker 2: Better than it's ever been, I think, like it's it's
- 1:06Speaker 2: a it's a really iconic rock and roll venue.
- 1:10Speaker 1: You know, a lot.
- 1:13Speaker 2: Of people will take issue with what I just said
- 1:15Speaker 2: about it being better than it's ever been and I
- 1:17Speaker 2: can't really, to be fair, I can't really say that
- 1:20Speaker 2: because you know, the Toad's been around longer than I have,
- 1:23Speaker 2: you know, and as a visitor to Melbourne though, it's
- 1:26Speaker 2: nice for there to be a little bit of consistency
- 1:29Speaker 2: in the in the venue department, you know what I mean.
- 1:34Speaker 4: Damn right. Your press release describes you as a world
- 1:38Speaker 4: renowned genuine sideshow freak, which doesn't sound too complimentary, especially
- 1:43Speaker 4: in the modern satitized world.
- 1:47Speaker 2: Yeah. No, I'm a side show freak and I've always
- 1:49Speaker 2: called myself that, and I've always shown off my deformities
- 1:52Speaker 2: I got. I got strange bones and ligaments. I got
- 1:56Speaker 2: elasticity and flexibility that's very, very natural. The downside is
- 2:01Speaker 2: that I've had to do a lot of strength training
- 2:03Speaker 2: so that my arms and legs don't just fall out
- 2:05Speaker 2: of their sockets.
- 2:08Speaker 1: But I mean, apart from that, it's the souper power.
- 2:11Speaker 2: So I'm kind of I'm kind of okay with being
- 2:15Speaker 2: a genetic freak if it means I get to go
- 2:20Speaker 2: on stage and do cook ship make people laugh and scream,
- 2:24Speaker 2: and you know, it's it's It's been a good life
- 2:28Speaker 2: being a side check freak. It's taken me all sorts
- 2:30Speaker 2: of places and help me see and experience all sorts
- 2:34Speaker 2: of cool ship.
- 2:35Speaker 3: Now there's probably people out there watching this thinking, what
- 2:38Speaker 3: the fuck is the side to freak and what does
- 2:40Speaker 3: he do? So run us through your acting and what
- 2:43Speaker 3: people can expect from you.
- 2:46Speaker 1: Sorry, that was a big car that just went past that.
- 2:50Speaker 4: Just run running through your acting and what it actually
- 2:53Speaker 4: is that you do.
- 2:55Speaker 1: I'll be doing all sorts of cook ship in this show.
- 2:57Speaker 2: Like usually when I'm performing solo, I'm doing that on
- 3:01Speaker 2: the street or like a sort of agricultural shows of
- 3:05Speaker 2: food and wine festivals and stuff like that. So in
- 3:09Speaker 2: those shows, I do like the most I can get
- 3:12Speaker 2: away with, which is dislocating my limbs, squeezing through a tennis.
- 3:15Speaker 1: Racket and swallowing a sword.
- 3:16Speaker 2: That's what people who have seen like my solo show
- 3:21Speaker 2: have probably seen when they've seen me doing my outdoor
- 3:25Speaker 2: solo show or even you know, sometimes I do that
- 3:27Speaker 2: on stage indoors.
- 3:29Speaker 1: But this is the first thing I put together that
- 3:33Speaker 1: is like.
- 3:35Speaker 2: Gonna be all me, and it's gonna like the reason
- 3:37Speaker 2: I'm only doing it once a week is because it's
- 3:39Speaker 2: going to be like stupidly intense and I'm gonna need
- 3:44Speaker 2: I'm gonna need rest time between shows. This show, you
- 3:49Speaker 2: can see me swallow swords. I'll be swallowing two swords
- 3:52Speaker 2: at once. I'll be doing some other really cooked with
- 3:56Speaker 2: sort of swallowing stunts. And I'm also going to be
- 4:01Speaker 2: doing stuff with the better nails and see me, see
- 4:05Speaker 2: me performing Yeah, weird strange feats of mind over matter,
- 4:14Speaker 2: but I don't have any supernatural powers.
- 4:17Speaker 1: And just a side.
- 4:19Speaker 2: Yeah, I'll be doing live piercing. I'll also be in
- 4:24Speaker 2: these shows.
- 4:25Speaker 1: Again.
- 4:26Speaker 2: I've got a week a week between shows, so I've
- 4:28Speaker 2: got time to heal.
- 4:29Speaker 1: I'll be doing my.
- 4:30Speaker 2: Hook suspension act, which is where I suspend my body
- 4:35Speaker 2: using meat hooks through my skin, and I'll be swinging
- 4:39Speaker 2: around up there for everyone to see. Now, it is
- 4:41Speaker 2: a very low ceiling venue, so it might look a
- 4:45Speaker 2: little different to the way I would do it in
- 4:47Speaker 2: a high ceiling venue, but you will see hanging from
- 4:50Speaker 2: my flesh.
- 4:52Speaker 4: No, it's all good and well.
- 4:54Speaker 3: Look like for us to have a chat about a
- 4:55Speaker 3: lot of this, and there'll be people will be scoffing, going,
- 4:58Speaker 3: oh yeah, you know that that before.
- 5:00Speaker 4: But I've looked through your photos made it and it
- 5:02Speaker 4: really is.
- 5:03Speaker 3: A visual show that you put on, like it's you've
- 5:07Speaker 3: got to see it to actually appreciate the magnitude of
- 5:10Speaker 3: what you're doing.
- 5:12Speaker 2: I do, Like I mean, I think I sing in
- 5:15Speaker 2: grindcore bands as well, and this is as close as
- 5:19Speaker 2: I can get to doing grindcore theater, I guess, like
- 5:25Speaker 2: you know, it's it's it's what I do solo when
- 5:27Speaker 2: I'm not when I'm not playing.
- 5:29Speaker 1: In bands and stuff like that.
- 5:30Speaker 2: This is this is what I do, you know, Like
- 5:35Speaker 2: like I said, I do, I do the most I
- 5:37Speaker 2: can get away with on the street and like outdoor
- 5:40Speaker 2: festivals and stuff like that.
- 5:41Speaker 1: But somewhere like the Tote.
- 5:44Speaker 2: And a DIY sort of punk environment, that's when you
- 5:48Speaker 2: can see me doing really really weird ship.
- 5:52Speaker 3: Is there a very real chance of you injuring yourself
- 5:56Speaker 3: or permanently disfriggering yourself doing this stuff?
- 6:00Speaker 1: Oh yeah, yeah absolutely, Like you know, especially when I'm
- 6:04Speaker 1: working with.
- 6:04Speaker 2: Unpredictable substances like broken glass, you know, like that can
- 6:09Speaker 2: end up in all sorts of places. And but yeah,
- 6:13Speaker 2: like I mean, I carry carry first aid kids, I
- 6:16Speaker 2: carry super glue. I got, I get everything I need
- 6:21Speaker 2: to patch myself up on the way through.
- 6:26Speaker 1: And you know the other stuff.
- 6:28Speaker 2: It's like, well, yeah, I mean, yeah there's risk and
- 6:32Speaker 2: yeah there's pain, But I mean that's why not everybody
- 6:35Speaker 2: does this shit, you know, like it's it's I'm not
- 6:39Speaker 2: saying you have to be crazy to do it, but
- 6:43Speaker 2: it does like a certain type of brain that I
- 6:47Speaker 2: think is predisposed to performing this kind of stuff, even
- 6:51Speaker 2: people who aren't like a natural sideshow freak like me,
- 6:55Speaker 2: Like I started off showing my my weird bones and
- 6:58Speaker 2: everything like that. But you know a lot of people,
- 7:03Speaker 2: a lot of people just like a self made freaks.
- 7:07Speaker 2: You know, like maybe they they get tattooed an insane amount,
- 7:11Speaker 2: or you know, like maybe they start off with the
- 7:14Speaker 2: sword swallowing or the or the live body piercing and stuff.
- 7:17Speaker 2: There's a lot of people ways people present this stuff.
- 7:21Speaker 2: I'm going to be preventing present that are preventing presenting
- 7:24Speaker 2: it my way at the tote for four weeks in
- 7:27Speaker 2: a row. Well, I already know what I'm going to do,
- 7:31Speaker 2: and you know, I've written the show and I've I've
- 7:33Speaker 2: got it all together. This will be the first time
- 7:36Speaker 2: I've performed this show. It like and it's my first
- 7:41Speaker 2: like solo, self produced show that I've made from scratch,
- 7:47Speaker 2: you know, like that's meant for the indoors. Like I
- 7:51Speaker 2: have performed a lot of solo stuff over the years,
- 7:54Speaker 2: but mostly it's been like short pieces as part of cabarets,
- 7:59Speaker 2: or or like short little bits opening up the bands,
- 8:04Speaker 2: or or like doing yeah, my outdoor street show.
- 8:07Speaker 1: This will be this would be very very different, and
- 8:12Speaker 1: there's there's going to be a lot.
- 8:15Speaker 2: Of stuff, Like I reckon, there'll be something that horrifies
- 8:19Speaker 2: anyone like some It's it's different. Everyone's different, right, Like
- 8:24Speaker 2: some people are fine with the piercing stuff, or like
- 8:27Speaker 2: when I do the glass and they see blood or
- 8:29Speaker 2: something like that, then they're fine with that. But then
- 8:32Speaker 2: the dislocations and of the thing that like freaks some
- 8:36Speaker 2: people out. Some people are fine with the dislocations, but
- 8:39Speaker 2: the sword swallowing is what freaks them out.
- 8:41Speaker 1: Like most people who see what I do.
- 8:45Speaker 2: End up laughing and having a good time. I can't
- 8:48Speaker 2: stress that enough. Like it is, I try to put
- 8:51Speaker 2: the same energy into this as I would like fronting
- 8:56Speaker 2: a grindcore band, you know, like it's it's just a
- 8:59Speaker 2: different type of energy. You know what I mean, but
- 9:02Speaker 2: that actually that energy is infectious, And even after twenty
- 9:08Speaker 2: five years of performing, it never ceases to amaze me
- 9:13Speaker 2: how excited a group of people will be to see
- 9:17Speaker 2: you do something really fucking cooked.
- 9:19Speaker 4: You know. That's the way alive.
- 9:24Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 9:25Speaker 2: Like, and like I was performing at a at an
- 9:28Speaker 2: agricultural show the other day, Like and like I said,
- 9:31Speaker 2: that's where I do.
- 9:32Speaker 1: You know, like I swallow a sword.
- 9:34Speaker 2: I do a bit of contusion, you know, I do
- 9:37Speaker 2: as much as like the general public can sort of handle.
- 9:41Speaker 4: You know.
- 9:42Speaker 1: Again, different vibe to I'm playing somewhere like the Tope, But.
- 9:46Speaker 2: I was looking around and it's like, man, this is
- 9:48Speaker 2: this is bringing people together?
- 9:50Speaker 1: Like it actually it actually.
- 9:51Speaker 4: Goes through your ban.
- 9:55Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 9:55Speaker 2: Man, Like there's people people who don't know each other
- 9:58Speaker 2: end up sitting standing in an audience together and watching
- 10:02Speaker 2: something they've never seen before.
- 10:04Speaker 1: And then they start chatting to each other, and they
- 10:05Speaker 1: might find out they.
- 10:06Speaker 2: Got more in common than they realize, you know, and
- 10:08Speaker 2: they've at least got the trauma of seeing me do
- 10:10Speaker 2: something really fucked up.
- 10:12Speaker 1: You know, it's a bond. Can they can turn a bond?
- 10:16Speaker 1: That's what I invite my own bond.
- 10:19Speaker 4: That's awesome. So you've got the visual side of it,
- 10:24Speaker 4: which you've spoken about, and then there's the obvious physical
- 10:26Speaker 4: side of it. But how much of it is mental?
- 10:29Speaker 3: Like you do you sort of train your brain to
- 10:32Speaker 3: ignore the pain. But that's sort of things I'd like,
- 10:34Speaker 3: Is there a big mental component to.
- 10:36Speaker 4: What you do?
- 10:37Speaker 2: Yeah, there's a mental component, but it's not it's not
- 10:40Speaker 2: ignoring the pain. There's a lot of pain acceptance required,
- 10:46Speaker 2: and there's a certain amount of relief once like doing
- 10:54Speaker 2: something like the suspension or the sort swallow, you know,
- 10:58Speaker 2: like it's you can and if you can lean into
- 11:01Speaker 2: that tension and that it feels like being in another dimension,
- 11:06Speaker 2: you know. And if you can't accept the pain and
- 11:10Speaker 2: you can kind of stay present with it, you'll often
- 11:14Speaker 2: get adrenaline and endorphins and dopamines and all that sort
- 11:18Speaker 2: of lovely stuff, you know what I mean.
- 11:20Speaker 1: It's yeah, like I look at it. I look at
- 11:24Speaker 1: it as as chasing a high, you know, just.
- 11:30Speaker 3: Say, like you come across something new that you want
- 11:32Speaker 3: to try out, Like how do you go about that?
- 11:35Speaker 4: Like do you know firmly where your own pain threshold is?
- 11:39Speaker 3: So like you look at something and go, nah, I
- 11:40Speaker 3: can't do that, or when you have a crack at
- 11:42Speaker 3: it and push your limits and try and get over that.
- 11:46Speaker 1: Look.
- 11:49Speaker 2: Look, most of that I did when I was younger.
- 11:52Speaker 2: Like it was like I was seventeen when I started
- 11:54Speaker 2: swimming swords, and by.
- 11:57Speaker 1: The time I was.
- 12:00Speaker 2: Like twenty twenty one, I'd worked with broken glass, I'd
- 12:05Speaker 2: worked with beds of nails.
- 12:09Speaker 1: I was, you know, shoving things up my.
- 12:11Speaker 2: Nose, and by twenty five I was doing sort of
- 12:16Speaker 2: piercing my skin on stage. And then by the time
- 12:21Speaker 2: I was twenty nine, I was doing suspension and hooks.
- 12:25Speaker 5: And nowadays I sort of spend more time thinking about
- 12:32Speaker 5: how I'm going to present the stuff, you know what
- 12:35Speaker 5: I mean, Like, like I spent a lot more time
- 12:41Speaker 5: thinking like.
- 12:42Speaker 2: How is this, how do I how do I how
- 12:45Speaker 2: do I get people to connect with this? How do
- 12:47Speaker 2: I how do I make make a show that has
- 12:51Speaker 2: all this really fucked up stuff in it that an
- 12:55Speaker 2: audience is willing to go along with and accept the
- 13:01Speaker 2: same way they would like a bugs Bunny cartoon or
- 13:04Speaker 2: ren and Stimpy or something like that.
- 13:06Speaker 3: You know, Like.
- 13:08Speaker 2: That's kind of where my head goes with a lot
- 13:11Speaker 2: of this stuff. I'm thinking about how it's going to look,
- 13:16Speaker 2: you know, how it can how I can.
- 13:17Speaker 1: Make that environment more engaging.
- 13:21Speaker 2: And and yeah, like because because I do think theater
- 13:26Speaker 2: and music and stuff brings people together, like like through
- 13:29Speaker 2: that COVID thing like that was that was the main
- 13:31Speaker 2: thing people mixed was shared group experiences, you know. And
- 13:37Speaker 2: and this is like one that is it's high stakes
- 13:41Speaker 2: for me the performer, but it's it's it's low stakes
- 13:46Speaker 2: for the audience, you know what I mean, Like they
- 13:50Speaker 2: like I mean, I guess there are high stakes in
- 13:53Speaker 2: that they might see something really fucking bad like happened,
- 13:57Speaker 2: but for the most it's like it's it's someone else
- 14:04Speaker 2: going through that the spectacle of an uncertain outcome, you
- 14:10Speaker 2: know what I mean. Like it's it's kind of like
- 14:14Speaker 2: like with sport, we don't actually know how it ends
- 14:16Speaker 2: until it ends, you know, like it could go either way,
- 14:19Speaker 2: you know.
- 14:22Speaker 1: And that's something that I like reading about a lot.
- 14:24Speaker 2: Like I've got quite a few books that have eaten
- 14:31Speaker 2: that are that are about like ancient spectacle, like in
- 14:35Speaker 2: the in the Greek and ancient Greek and roaming world,
- 14:38Speaker 2: but also in like ancient Central America as well, and
- 14:44Speaker 2: I'm fascinated by the ways in which sport, theater, and
- 14:48Speaker 2: religion converge, you know, Like it's the more you read
- 14:53Speaker 2: about it, the more you go. Right, there's a big
- 14:56Speaker 2: part of human history where they're all the same thing.
- 15:00Speaker 4: It's scary, but it's also awesome.
- 15:04Speaker 2: Yeah, And like I like going and checking out like
- 15:08Speaker 2: really cooked stuff around the world. You know that that
- 15:12Speaker 2: isn't what I do, but it's definitely part of the
- 15:14Speaker 2: inspiration for what I do. Like I lent to for
- 15:17Speaker 2: the second time in my life. I went to the
- 15:20Speaker 2: nine Emperor God's Vegetarian Festival and forget last year. And yeah,
- 15:26Speaker 2: some of the practitioners the mass song they're called, they
- 15:30Speaker 2: do all these like insane rituals where they're putting big
- 15:34Speaker 2: spikes through their skin. And I'm not just needles either,
- 15:38Speaker 2: like swords, and it's.
- 15:40Speaker 1: All this really really full and stuff.
- 15:42Speaker 2: And I'm very inspired by that, you know what I mean,
- 15:48Speaker 2: Like you know, when I when I do look at
- 15:52Speaker 2: what I'm doing, or when I have in the past
- 15:53Speaker 2: looked at what I'm doing and learning the new stuff
- 15:57Speaker 2: as being like humans have been doing this stuff for
- 16:02Speaker 2: a very long time, and it is part of so
- 16:04Speaker 2: many cultures that it is.
- 16:06Speaker 4: No, Like.
- 16:09Speaker 2: I don't look at it as any different as being
- 16:12Speaker 2: a dancer or an athlete or something like that. Like
- 16:18Speaker 2: what I'm doing is using my body to tell stories.
- 16:24Speaker 2: You know. Like, yeah, so a lot of a lot
- 16:28Speaker 2: of the show is going to be like silent routines
- 16:32Speaker 2: to music, you know, and it's like the whole the
- 16:36Speaker 2: whole show fits together, but it is. There are lots
- 16:38Speaker 2: of little stories in there. And sometimes it's sometimes it's
- 16:42Speaker 2: me just addressing the crowd talking as me sort of MC,
- 16:48Speaker 2: and other times other times it's sort of yeah, like
- 16:52Speaker 2: a weird little silent cartoon going on, you know, And
- 16:55Speaker 2: like I use, like freak Show is the kind of
- 16:59Speaker 2: thing that makes it what it is. But like I
- 17:03Speaker 2: try and use all the skills I got and in
- 17:05Speaker 2: terms of like minimalist set design that packed, you know,
- 17:10Speaker 2: creates a.
- 17:10Speaker 1: Little world still and.
- 17:13Speaker 2: The soundtracks and stuff pieces of music that I've you know,
- 17:18Speaker 2: composed and reworked at various points in my life that
- 17:22Speaker 2: are music that I really enjoyed making and writing but
- 17:25Speaker 2: don't really fit any of the music projects that I've
- 17:27Speaker 2: been involved in, but make great soundtracks to the cooked.
- 17:32Speaker 1: Little worlds that I want to make on stage, you.
- 17:34Speaker 3: Know, speaking of that side of it, bro, like, do
- 17:37Speaker 3: you do you write pieces of music specifically for the
- 17:41Speaker 3: stage show or do you just sort of go back
- 17:42Speaker 3: through old material and going it don't work well here
- 17:44Speaker 3: and that'll work all?
- 17:46Speaker 1: A bit of both, a bit of both.
- 17:49Speaker 2: Like yeah, Like there's a couple of the routines in
- 17:53Speaker 2: the show that I definitely like made that music to
- 17:57Speaker 2: go with what I.
- 17:58Speaker 1: Wanted to do on stage. But then there's other ones.
- 18:01Speaker 6: Where I'm where I have just had a bit of
- 18:06Speaker 6: music that I haven't used anything for that I've wanted
- 18:09Speaker 6: to use, but never really had the right thing to
- 18:14Speaker 6: put it.
- 18:14Speaker 1: With, you know what I mean. And then I come
- 18:17Speaker 1: up with an.
- 18:17Speaker 2: Act I'm like, oh, you know, I actually this bit
- 18:20Speaker 2: of music here, you know, and then you end up
- 18:26Speaker 2: you end up pulling it apart and making remixes all
- 18:30Speaker 2: of that sort of fun stuff.
- 18:32Speaker 4: Completely from start to finish.
- 18:35Speaker 2: Well yeah, yeah, like I sort of I sort of
- 18:40Speaker 2: wanted you know, this is like, especially coming out of COVID,
- 18:44Speaker 2: I was working on a lot of other people shows.
- 18:46Speaker 1: Like you know so and and the like.
- 18:52Speaker 2: I've been living off performing for my whole life since
- 18:56Speaker 2: I was a teenager, and a lot of that's been
- 18:59Speaker 2: because I was able to sort of present this stuff
- 19:02Speaker 2: in a street show context.
- 19:04Speaker 1: And while whilst street shows.
- 19:06Speaker 2: Are really amazing for connecting with community and bringing community.
