- 0:00you You're making podcasting harder than it needs
- 0:07to be, and we're gonna fix that today. Hey, welcome
- 0:09back to another episode of Abby the Podcast Lady.
- 0:11I'm so glad that you took some time to join me
- 0:14today as we talk about the five signs that you're
- 0:17making podcasting harder than it needs to be,
- 0:20and also parentheses, how we can fix that. I
- 0:23have worked with a lot of podcasters over the
- 0:26years. I've helped launch so many shows. I actually
- 0:28just got to help launch, what was it, two, three
- 0:31shows? Four shows just this month. It's been
- 0:33a crazy month of March 2020. So yeah, I am very
- 0:37familiar with the podcasting process. I produce
- 0:4010 shows on a weekly basis. I'm elbows deep in
- 0:43this and I know when people are making it harder
- 0:45than it needs to be and I have ways that we can
- 0:47fix that. So let's not waste any time. Let's
- 0:49just get right into it. The number one sign that
- 0:52you're making podcasting harder than it needs
- 0:54to be is that you're trying to make every episode
- 0:57perfect. Here's the thing about podcasting. You
- 1:00can edit the show. What? You can edit the show?
- 1:05Oh my goodness. I'm telling you right now what
- 1:07you're watching is a edited polished version
- 1:10of me. I don't talk like this in real life. I'm
- 1:13not perfect. I stumble over words. I say things
- 1:16twice. I use the word um and ah or I need to
- 1:20stop and think and catch up with my thoughts.
- 1:22You don't need to be perfect. Far from actually.
- 1:24You can edit out all the imperfections and make
- 1:26you look as perfect as you want. So if you're
- 1:28sitting down to record and you're getting frustrated
- 1:31because you can't do every in one take, don't
- 1:33worry about it. Do a take two. What you're watching
- 1:36right now, I'm pretty sure this is take three
- 1:38of trying to start this podcast. So don't let
- 1:40perfectionism be the thing that makes podcasting
- 1:43hard for you. You can always edit mistakes out.
- 1:45The second way you're making podcasting harder
- 1:47than it needs to be is that you don't have a
- 1:49simple, repeatable workflow. I would not be able
- 1:52to run my business and produce 10 shows a week
- 1:55if I did not have a system in place for each
- 1:57and every one of them. Are the systems the same
- 2:00for each and every one? No, they're different.
- 2:02Everyone has different needs and wants and deliverables
- 2:05associated with their shows. But if it wasn't
- 2:07for the systems in place to make sure all of
- 2:10those deliverables are met, no one would have
- 2:12a show with me. That's just plain and simple
- 2:15truth right there. So when you're starting your
- 2:17podcast, if you're producing it yourself, make
- 2:19sure you have a simple, repeatable workflow so
- 2:22you can actually accomplish things. Because if
- 2:24you're reinventing the wheel from scratch every
- 2:26time you sit down to record, edit, and upload
- 2:29a show, you're gonna burn yourself out. so fast
- 2:31you need a repeatable workflow so think about
- 2:34what actually needs to get done for your show
- 2:36obviously the audio because you're making a podcast
- 2:38the video you might be making a video podcast
- 2:40you need to chop it up to make social media elements
- 2:43whether that's short form videos whether that's
- 2:46static graphic posts hopefully you're writing
- 2:48a blog and putting it on Pinterest I could do
- 2:50an entire episode on that but there's certain
- 2:52things that you know need to get done for your
- 2:55podcast so make sure that you have a system in
- 2:57place to do them efficiently and that every you're
- 3:00kind of doing it not exactly in the same order,
- 3:02but same enough where it feels like a pattern.
- 3:05Because the more you do it, the more you're gonna
- 3:06get into that flow state and the easier it is
- 3:09gonna get. Another sign you're making podcasting
- 3:11harder than it needs to be is that you're overthinking
- 3:13your content instead of trusting your gut and
- 3:16your expertise. You are making this podcast because
- 3:18you are the expert in your field. That's a fact.
- 3:21You might have a little bit of imposter syndrome
- 3:23and think, but there's people who are smarter
- 3:25than me. Yeah, there probably are, but you know
- 3:28what? You're the expert. You gotta believe it.
- 3:30Push that imposter syndrome down. You are the
- 3:32expert in your field. You're feeling a calling
- 3:34on your heart to make this show and talk about
- 3:36the topics that you wanna cover because you know
- 3:38your stuff. So trust yourself to know your stuff
- 3:41and share your topics. If you need bullet points
- 3:44to help you get through that podcast episode,
- 3:47make those bullet points. I'm looking at my bullet
- 3:49points right now. But I know deep down that I
- 3:52know what I'm talking about. I know about podcasting.
- 3:54That's why I have a show called Abby the Podcast
- 3:57Lady. That's why my license plate on my car says
- 3:59pod lady. I am the pod lady. I know what I'm
- 4:02talking about. So I just need to trust my expertise.
- 4:04This is advice that I need to tell myself. It's
- 4:07never going to fully go away if you have any
- 4:09bit of imposter syndrome, but just know you're
- 4:11the expert in your field and you know what you're
- 4:12talking about. So trust yourself to share that
- 4:15information with the world. The fourth way you're
- 4:17making podcasting harder than it needs to be
- 4:19is that you're comparing your beginning to someone
- 4:22else's polished finished product. Now, if you're
- 4:25sitting down for the first time, opening up your
- 4:28web webcam or propping up your cell phone to
- 4:30record and you're comparing that to Dax Shepard's
- 4:34armchair expert where he has a three or four
- 4:36camera set up in his garage and professional
- 4:38gear and all the funding in the world from Wondery.
- 4:41Yeah, you're going to feel bad about that and
- 4:43you're going to make podcasting harder than it
- 4:44needs to be. But in all reality, you don't need
- 4:47to worry about that. You just need to worry about
- 4:49getting your message out into the world in the
- 4:51most efficient way that you can. Do not compare
- 4:53your start to someone else's six, seven years
- 4:56into making a show. That is not realistic. Okay.
- 5:00Now you can find ways to level up this experience
- 5:03You can hire someone like me who's a producer
- 5:05who can bring in the lights and the equipment
- 5:07and make sure everything is Looking perfect sounding
- 5:10perfect. But honestly when we all start we all
- 5:13kind of hate the first few episodes we make I
- 5:15just heard someone speak last week and she said
- 5:17don't listen to the first six episodes of my
- 5:19show because they're bad like we all hate where
- 5:21we start but we kind of want to hate where we
- 5:23start because that shows that you're growing
- 5:24as a podcaster and as a person and in this skill
- 5:28set, which is a very special skill set. So make
- 5:31sure that you're not comparing yourself from
- 5:33where you're starting, just getting your feet
- 5:35off the ground to someone else's finish line
- 5:37with a golden globe in hand looking at you Amy
- 5:40Poehler. So that's a way you're making podcasting
- 5:43harder. Try not to play the comparison game.
- 5:45And the last way you're making podcasting harder
- 5:47than it needs to be is that you're making your
- 5:49podcast bigger than the season that it's in.
- 5:52This kind of goes along with the number four
- 5:54reason of comparing yourself to someone else's
- 5:57finish line. How much work are you putting into
- 6:00your show on a weekly basis and are you actually
- 6:03seeing any results from it? Are you doing too
- 6:06much is the question. Are you trying to be on
- 6:08every single platform? Are you trying to make
- 6:11a full -blown video version of your podcast when
- 6:14you don't know a thing about video editing? Are
- 6:16you trying to create multiple shows a week when
- 6:19you really don't have the capacity for more than
- 6:21one? Are you trying to take clips and put them
- 6:24on Instagram and you and Pinterest and LinkedIn
- 6:27and every single place that you can find, you
- 6:29might be doing too much and that's gonna make
- 6:31podcasting feel really hard and impossible. But
- 6:34if you take everything you're doing... Just say,
- 6:37okay, for the next month and a half, I'm just
- 6:39going to focus on making my show, putting out
- 6:42one audio show a week. I'm going to make sure
- 6:44that I post twice about it a week on just one
- 6:47platform. Maybe you have the biggest following
- 6:50on Instagram. So you're going to focus on Instagram
- 6:52or maybe you have a great email list. You're
- 6:54going to make sure it gets in the email list
- 6:56for every email you send out for the next month
- 6:58and a half. Focus on a couple of little things.
- 7:01You might be making your podcast way more complicated
- 7:03than it actually needs to be. So what I want
- 7:05you to do is I want you to take a big deep breath
- 7:08and think about just a couple of things that
- 7:10you can do. Focus on getting that audio out.
- 7:13Podcasting is an audio first. Platform no matter
- 7:15where you're listening even if it's on YouTube
- 7:17if the audio doesn't sound good. That's priority
- 7:19number one So make your audio content and pick
- 7:22one platform You're gonna focus on you're gonna
- 7:24feel so much better than trying to be everywhere
- 7:26all at once and it's gonna make podcasting feel
- 7:29a lot less Impossible. So hopefully this episode
- 7:32was helpful for you today podcasting it can be
- 7:34hard But it's only as hard as we make it So just
- 7:37think about what you're doing with your show
- 7:39your goals for the show how you're using it to
- 7:42promote your brand your business your platform
- 7:44and just think about ways that you can simplify
- 7:46it because at the end of the day, like I said,
- 7:48it's only as hard as we make it. So thank you
- 7:50so much for tuning in to another episode of Abby
- 7:52the Podcast Lady and I will catch you guys next
- 7:55week.
