• 0:00
Speaker 1: Welcome to DeSoto Hills Baptist Church.
• 0:02
Speaker 1: Our Sunday morning services are weekly at 9 and 10 30 am.
• 0:07
Speaker 1: You're listening to an audio recast of this past week's service.
• 0:11
Speaker 1: We hope you enjoy.
• 0:12
  Speaker 1: God bless.
• 0:15
Speaker 2: Okay, bibles this morning will be in Acts, chapter 2.
• 0:18
  Speaker 2: Acts, chapter 2,.
• 0:20
Speaker 2: While you turn there, let me ask you have you ever, has anybody ever, made to you a promise?
• 0:26
Speaker 2: And then you had to wait for the fulfillment of that promise, and then, when it happened, you, just you couldn't hardly take it.
• 0:33
Speaker 2: Let me give you an example.
• 0:35
Speaker 2: A few years ago, at Christmas at the Stegalls, we decided that what we were going to give the kids that year for Christmas was a trip to Disney.
• 0:44
Speaker 2: Okay, and so that morning, christmas morning, we woke up and they unwrapped presents that pointed to our trip.
• 0:53
Speaker 2: They unwrapped a Lego set that was like Cinderella's castle and that was to all of them, that they all spent time putting together, and they unwrapped their armbands that would get them in the park.
• 1:03
Speaker 2: And we didn't tell them.
• 1:05
Speaker 2: As they began to unwrap these things, it slowly began to.
• 1:08
Speaker 2: You could see their minds processing oh, wait, wait, are we going to Disney?
• 1:13
Speaker 2: And so there was the excitement of the promise.
• 1:17
Speaker 2: Hey, yes, we are going to Disney.
• 1:19
Speaker 2: But then here's the problem that arose from that the trip wasn't until February, and so now there was this excitement of going to Disney, but you had to wait.
• 1:30
Speaker 2: You had to wait till February.
• 1:32
Speaker 2: But then that day, I mean the day that we woke up, bags were packed, you head to the airport the day we were going.
• 1:43
Speaker 2: Man, it was a day like none other, and even as a dad, I had never been to Disney at that point.
• 1:49
Speaker 2: And even for me, just the thrill, the feeling, the anticipation, the exhilaration that morning of getting up and going to Disney and then walking through the park for the first time, and the promise of all that being fulfilled.
• 2:06
Speaker 2: It came true, it came to light, it was for real, it really happened.
• 2:10
Speaker 2: And you have all of these feelings that are going on today as we come to Acts, chapter 2.
• 2:17
Speaker 2: For the disciples, that's where they are.
• 2:20
Speaker 2: We talked about how this book could really be entitled.
• 2:25
Speaker 2: Instead of Acts of the Apostles, it could be entitled the Acts of Jesus Christ Through the Apostles and the Church, by the Power of the Holy Spirit.
• 2:33
Speaker 2: We saw in the beginning verses of this book how God promised the disciples that he was going to send the Holy Spirit.
• 2:43
Speaker 2: He did that in verses 5 and verse 8.
• 2:45
Speaker 2: And we saw him do that.
• 2:48
Speaker 2: And then after we see him teaching about the kingdom of God to them for about 40 days and then he ascends to heaven.
• 2:56
Speaker 2: And after he ascended to heaven, they went back to Jerusalem.
• 3:00
Speaker 2: We talked about this last week how they went back to Jerusalem and there they waited on the Holy Spirit.
• 3:06
Speaker 2: But they didn't just wait, they, they actively waited on the Holy Spirit to to come upon them.
• 3:13
Speaker 2: But then or let me rephrase that now, as we come to Acts, chapter two, here's what's happening.
• 3:22
Speaker 2: Chapter 2, here's what's happening he comes, the Holy Spirit comes, and he gives very clear evidence that hey, I am here, I'm here for us.
• 3:33
Speaker 2: And so what we have to do is process this message of the Holy Spirit coming to the apostles, and that's great, that the Holy Spirit came to them.
• 3:41
Speaker 2: But what does that mean for us?
• 3:43
Speaker 2: What does that mean for us as we sit in DeSoto Hills Baptist Church in 2025, that the Holy Spirit came to the apostles and for us, what we can see, hopefully, that we're going to see is that the Holy Spirit didn't just come to the apostles at this time, but he came and stayed.
• 4:00
Speaker 2: He came and remained with them, and the promise is for us as believers, that the Holy Spirit, he comes to us as believers, and as he did with the apostles on this day of Pentecost he stayed, and when he comes to us he stays, he remains with us, and because because of that we can be challenged.
• 4:34
Speaker 2: We can be challenged to obey and follow him, because he gives us power to do what he has called us to do to be witnesses for him.
• 4:41
Speaker 2: So the question that we want to answer this morning is how did the Spirit come when he came?
• 4:48
Speaker 2: In Acts, chapter 2, how did he come?
• 4:52
Speaker 2: So let's read this morning in Acts, chapter 2.
• 4:55
Speaker 2: If you are able to stand with us, please do, as we give honor to the reading of God's word.
• 5:01
  Speaker 2: Acts, chapter 2,.
• 5:02
Speaker 2: We're going to start reading in verse 1 and read down through verse 13.
• 5:08
Speaker 2: When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place and suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting and divided tongues of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.
• 5:33
Speaker 2: And there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven, and at this sound the multitude came together and they were bewildered because each one was hearing them speak in his own language and they were amazed and astonished, saying are not all these who are speaking Galileans?
• 5:55
Speaker 2: And how is it that we hear each of us in his own native language, the Parthians and Medes, the Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, judea and Cappadocia, pontus and Asia, phrygia and Pamphylia, egypt and parts of Libya beyond Cyrene, belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, and Cretans.
• 6:25
Speaker 2: And let's pray together, god, we do.
• 6:51
Speaker 2: Thank you for your word and we thank you now for this reverential moment that we have to open your word and hear your truths as you have revealed them to us.
• 7:06
Speaker 2: So, god, we pray now that you will be with us, spirit, that you will lead us into all truth and, god, you will change our lives for all eternity.
• 7:17
Speaker 2: Jesus, it's in your wonderful name that we pray.
• 7:21
Speaker 2: Amen you may be seated.
• 7:24
Speaker 2: Wonderful name that we pray, amen you may be seated.
• 7:31
Speaker 2: So again, this morning, we asked the question how did the Spirit come when he came on that day?
• 7:34
Speaker 2: How did he come to them?
• 7:36
Speaker 2: Well, the first thing, I think, that we see here, especially in these first few verses, in verses one through four, I think, what we see here is he came as he promised.
• 7:46
Speaker 2: He came just like he promised to do.
• 7:50
  Speaker 2: I mean, we've seen it.
• 7:52
Speaker 2: We've seen it in this chapter, but we've seen God promise all throughout scripture and we see the way that the Holy Spirit has come upon people all throughout scripture, right there in verse 1 when it says and they arrived and were all together in one place.
• 8:09
Speaker 2: And then in verse 2, and suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind and it filled the entire house where they were sitting.
• 8:18
Speaker 2: This word here that we get for wind in the Greek language, it really carries three kind of ideas.
• 8:25
Speaker 2: It's the same word that you use for wind, is the same word that is used for breath, which is the same word that is used for spirit.
• 8:34
Speaker 2: It kind of reminds me as we read this.
• 8:38
Speaker 2: It reminds me of Ezekiel, chapter 37.
• 8:42
Speaker 2: Back in Ezekiel 37, god comes to Ezekiel and he asked him to prophesy, and it's a little bit longer passage, but let's read Ezekiel 37 and see what he says here and see how it can apply to us in Acts.
• 8:55
Speaker 2: He says in Ezekiel 37, verse 1, the hand of the Lord was upon me.
• 9:00
Speaker 2: This is Ezekiel talking.
• 9:19
Speaker 2: And he said to me Son of man, can these bones live?
• 9:24
Speaker 2: And I answered oh, lord, god, you know.
• 9:28
Speaker 2: Then he said to me prophesy over these bones.
• 9:31
Speaker 2: And I said to them oh, dry bones, hear the word of the Lord.
• 9:34
Speaker 2: Thus says the Lord, the Lord, god, to these bones Behold, I will cause breath to enter you and you shall live.
• 9:42
Speaker 2: So I prophesied, as I was commanded, and as I prophesied, there was a sound.
• 9:46
Speaker 2: And behold, a rattling, and the bones came together, bone to its bone and bone.
• 10:08
Speaker 2: And I looked and behold, there was some news on them and flesh had come upon them and skin covered them, but there was no breath in them.
• 10:13
Speaker 2: Then he said to me prophesy to the breath, prophesy, son of man, and say to the breath thus says the Lord God, come from the four winds, oh, breathe, and breathe on these slain that they may live.
• 10:27
Speaker 2: So I prophesied, as he commanded me, and the breath came into them and they lived and they stood on their feet.
• 10:33
Speaker 2: An exceedingly great army.
• 10:35
Speaker 2: Then he said to me, son of man, these bones are whole, or the whole house of Israel.
• 10:40
Speaker 2: Behold, they say, our bones are dried up and our hope is lost.
• 10:44
Speaker 2: We are indeed cut off.
• 10:59
Speaker 2: They say land of Israel.
• 11:01
Speaker 2: And you shall know that I am the Lord when I open your graves and raise you from your graves, oh, my people, and I will put my spirit within you and you shall live and I will place you in your own land.
• 11:20
Speaker 2: Then you will know that I am the Lord.
• 11:23
Speaker 2: I have spoken, I will do it, declares the Lord.
• 11:30
Speaker 2: So see this vision that Ezekiel is having the Spirit calls him up and takes him into this valley, and it's a valley just filled with bones, and not just any bones, dry bones.
• 11:41
Speaker 2: If you don't understand that what a dry bone is is is it is a bone that has been sitting there for a long time.
• 11:49
Speaker 2: It it has been there for for a long time and it's dry and it can be brittle.
• 11:54
Speaker 2: And Ezekiel is sitting in this, in this valley of bones, and God's God says Ezekiel, do you think they can live?
• 12:02
Speaker 2: And this is live.
• 12:04
Speaker 2: And this is a great response.
• 12:07
Speaker 2: This is a great response from Ezekiel.
• 12:10
Speaker 2: He says, lord you know, because he didn't.
• 12:14
Speaker 2: He didn't know, he didn't know what God was going to do or what God could do, but he knew God did so.
• 12:20
Speaker 2: He says Lord you know.
• 12:22
Speaker 2: And then he said Ezekiel prophesy over these bones.
• 12:24
Speaker 2: Now, when we hear that a lot of times when we hear prophesy, what we think about is telling about the future, but that's not really what prophesying is.
• 12:32
Speaker 2: Prophesying is telling what the Lord said to say.
• 12:36
Speaker 2: That's when you hear prophets all the time, when you're reading the prophets and it says thus saith the Lord, what they're doing.
• 12:44
Speaker 2: The job of a prophet is to tell what God has said.
• 12:47
Speaker 2: So he says prophesy over these bones.
• 12:52
  Speaker 2: See what happens.
• 12:54
  Speaker 2: So Ezekiel does.
• 12:56
Speaker 2: He begins to prophesy and the bones begin to take up muscles and take up ligaments, and skin comes over them and they look like bodies now.
• 13:08
Speaker 2: But it's interesting, because they are still dead, there's no breath.
• 13:14
Speaker 2: So he says Ezekiel, prophesy again, prophesy to the breath.
• 13:21
  Speaker 2: And he does.
• 13:23
  Speaker 2: To the breath.
• 13:30
Speaker 2: And he does, and these, what were once dry bones turned into bodies, become living beings with the breath of God in them.
• 13:33
Speaker 2: And it's a multitude, like an army, and he says this is Israel.
• 13:38
Speaker 2: Israel has been cut off from me're, without hope.
• 13:44
Speaker 2: They feel like they are dead, and not just dead, they feel like there is no hope.
• 13:51
Speaker 2: They are dry bones, but hear me.
• 13:54
Speaker 2: God says hear me, I am going to put my spirit in them and when I do that, they will live.
• 14:08
Speaker 2: Now come to Acts.
• 14:09
Speaker 2: While the apostles probably don't feel like they have been cut off from God, at the same time remember Jesus, whom they had walked with, whom they had followed, as the Messiah has ascended into heaven, and they are waiting for this promise.
• 14:26
Speaker 2: They are waiting for the promise of the Holy Spirit because they don't know what to do and they've been given a mission to be witnesses in Jerusalem, judea, samaria and the uttermost parts of the world, and they don't know how they're going to do.
• 14:34
Speaker 2: And they've been given a mission to be witnesses in Jerusalem, judea, samaria and the uttermost parts of the world, and they don't know how they're going to do that and they don't know what's going to happen.
• 14:41
Speaker 2: And all of the sudden, there is the sound of a mighty rushing wind and it is the spirit coming upon them and giving them life so they can go and do what they are called to do them life, so they can go and do what they are called to do.
• 14:59
Speaker 2: See, scripture has told it has been talking all through the old testament of how the spirit is going to come and he is going to give life and he is going to to allow god's people to do what they have been called to do.
• 15:08
Speaker 2: And now we see the holy spirit coming upon the disciples, but it is unlike any other time that he has come before, because this time he didn't come but just come.
• 15:22
Speaker 2: But this time he come and he came and he remained with the disciples.
• 15:24
Speaker 2: And so, as we try to ponder what this means for us, what we need to do is look a little bit further in Acts, chapter two, because here's what's going to happen after this day after the Spirit comes upon them, peter is going to stand up and preach.
• 15:35
Speaker 2: We're going to look at that next week.
• 15:37
Speaker 2: We'll hear his sermon and examine that.
• 15:39
Speaker 2: But let's look at the invitation of Peter in Acts 2, verse 38.
• 15:43
Speaker 2: Here's what Peter says.
• 15:44
Speaker 2: And Peter said to them Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ, for the forgiveness of your sins, of Jesus Christ, for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
• 16:02
Speaker 2: That same Holy Spirit that came into Ezekiel's vision and gave life to those dry bones where there was no life.
• 16:12
Speaker 2: The same Holy Spirit that came to the apostles when they didn't know what to do, and he came like the sound of a mighty rushing wind and gave them power so they can do what God called them to do, is the same Holy Spirit that comes upon us when we trust and we place our faith in Jesus Christ.
• 16:28
Speaker 2: He comes upon us and he gives us life, he gives us hope, he gives us a way for us to be connected with God, that same Holy Spirit.
• 16:38
Speaker 2: He comes and he remains with us, just as we have seen Him do throughout Scripture.
• 16:44
Speaker 2: He comes and gives us life.
• 16:48
Speaker 2: Not only do we see Scripture talking about Jesus coming in the wind, he talks about it in fire, see verse 3,.
• 16:59
Speaker 2: He says and divided tongues as a fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them.
• 17:07
Speaker 2: We've seen God come in fire Oftentimes throughout scripture.
• 17:13
Speaker 2: When it speaks of fire, it talking about judgment, but I don't think so here.
• 17:18
Speaker 2: Instead, he's talking about the presence of God.
• 17:23
Speaker 2: If you've been reading through the Bible as we've been walking through the daily walk Bible and been walking through that just yesterday, you read in Exodus, chapter 19 and 20.
• 17:31
Speaker 2: You've seen here, or you're about to see here in just a few chapters, over how, as they come out of Egypt, and you've seen it here, as they, as the Israelites, come out of Egypt, that God, god's presence, dwells with them as a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night, to to lead them.
• 17:54
Speaker 2: But also in exodus chapter 19.
• 17:57
Speaker 2: What's happening here is, in exodus chapter 20, god's about to give the, the israelites, the 10 commandments.
• 18:06
Speaker 2: They're at the base of mount sinai and god has told them to get ready because they're about to meet with him and he's set some parameters for them and some boundaries for them, because they are about to meet with holy God and they are unholy people.
• 18:21
Speaker 2: And so he's given them some parameters and he's told them some things to do to prepare them for Exodus chapter 20, when he gives them the law.
• 18:31
Speaker 2: And in Exodus 19, we see that.
• 18:32
Speaker 2: And in verse 16, he says this the law.
• 18:37
Speaker 2: And in exodus 19 we see that.
• 18:38
Speaker 2: And in verse 16 he says this on the morning of the third day, there were thunders and lightnings and a thick cloud on the mountain.
• 18:41
Speaker 2: A very loud trumpet blast so that the people in the camp trembled.
• 18:45
Speaker 2: Then moses brought the people out of the camp to meet god and they took their stand at the foot of the mountain.
• 18:53
Speaker 2: Now hear verse 18.
• 18:55
Speaker 2: Now Mount Sinai was wrapped in smoke because the Lord had descended on it in fire.
• 19:05
Speaker 2: The smoke of it went up like the smoke of a kill and the whole mountain trembled greatly.
• 19:12
Speaker 2: And the sound of the mountain like fire.
• 19:33
Speaker 2: God has revealed his presence to the people throughout Scripture as fire.
• 19:41
Speaker 2: So what we see on Pentecost we see the Spirit coming, as he has been promised, like a wind to Ezekiel and the dry bones Like a fire to Moses.
• 19:51
Speaker 2: On top of the mountain, we see Scripture pointing to the Spirit coming this way and then in Acts, chapter 2, we see Him come.
• 19:59
Speaker 2: But not only has the Spirit been promised in Scripture to come these ways, he has been promised by Jesus Himself.
• 20:07
  Speaker 2: We've mentioned it.
• 20:09
Speaker 2: But Acts, chapter 1, verse 5.
• 20:12
Speaker 2: Acts, chapter 1, verse 5, jesus is teaching the disciples about the kingdom of God and he says for John, baptized with water.
• 20:22
Speaker 2: But you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.
• 20:30
Speaker 2: Jesus promised that the Spirit was coming.
• 20:34
  Speaker 2: Now.
• 20:34
Speaker 2: Jesus promised that the Spirit was coming.
• 20:35
Speaker 2: We saw in verse 8, you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you.
• 20:42
Speaker 2: In John, chapter 16, verse 7, jesus is preparing the disciples for his departure and he says this Nevertheless, I tell you the truth.
• 20:50
Speaker 2: It is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the helper will not come to you, but if I go away I will send him to you.
• 21:02
Speaker 2: Jesus has promised, scripture has promised that the Holy Spirit has come upon them and will come upon them.
• 21:15
Speaker 2: And the disciples were waiting, actively waiting, for him to come and finally he came.
• 21:28
Speaker 2: He came upon them and because the Holy Spirit came upon them that day, we can understand and we can receive the promise that, just as he came to them and remained, he comes to all those who believe and he remains with them.
• 21:47
Speaker 2: Oh, church, church, we should be so excited that the Holy Spirit came, because we know now he is with us when we trust in him, and he gives us life, just like he did those dead bones.
• 22:04
Speaker 2: He gives us hope, just like he did those dead bones.
• 22:08
Speaker 2: He gives us power, just like he promised in verse 8.
• 22:12
Speaker 2: He is here and he is with us and we need to trust in him.
• 22:18
Speaker 2: So we see the Holy Spirit coming in power.
• 22:24
Speaker 2: But the second thing, second way we see the Holy Spirit coming here, is he is coming to the nations.
• 22:31
  Speaker 2: Hear what happens.
• 22:33
Speaker 2: Hear what happens in Acts, chapter 2 and verse 5.
• 22:35
Speaker 2: Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem, jews, devout men from every nation under heaven.
• 22:43
Speaker 2: Now listen, I understand that he is still talking about the Jewish people and he's coming to Jews, but here's what's happening.
• 22:49
Speaker 2: There was this group of people, these Jews, these devout men, these men who were devoted to their religion, who were devoted to their God, and they had come from all the nations.
• 23:02
Speaker 2: And then he goes on and he lists the nations.
• 23:04
Speaker 2: Just briefly, let's look at those he says from Parthia and Medes and Elam.
• 23:10
Speaker 2: You know what that is today, that's really modern-day Iran.
• 23:13
Speaker 2: There were devout Jews who came from modern day Iran, who were in Jerusalem on this day.
• 23:20
Speaker 2: Mesopotamia, talking about the Middle East, judea, which is probably referring to Judah.
• 23:26
Speaker 2: The kingdom of Israel under David and Solomon, which would have included Syria.
• 23:31
Speaker 2: Then he goes on and he says Cappadocia and Pontus and Asia and Pamphylia, which is really today modern-day Turkey, and areas in modern-day Turkey.
• 23:43
Speaker 2: Then we see them coming from North Africa, from Egypt, libya, cyrene.
• 23:48
Speaker 2: We see them coming from Rome and Crete and Arabia.
• 23:52
Speaker 2: We see people from all over the world and even though it's still Jews, because as we get later, the Holy Spirit's going to come to the Gentiles, don't worry, it's coming to us as well.
• 24:02
Speaker 2: But right now we see Jews from all over the world who are gathered there and they were celebrating Pentecost.
• 24:18
Speaker 2: Now, listen, we've Christianized this pretty well, because when I come to you and say you know what happened on the day of Pentecost, a lot of you would say, well, that's when the Holy Spirit came, which you're right.
• 24:31
Speaker 2: But Pentecost is really.
• 24:34
Speaker 2: Its roots are in Judaism.
• 24:36
Speaker 2: It was one of three harvest festivals and Pentecost which means 50, was celebrated most of the time 50 days after the first day of Passover.
• 24:50
Speaker 2: The Jews would have called it probably the Feast of Weeks or the Feast of First Fruits.
• 24:57
Speaker 2: It would have been the time when they gathered the first fruits of their harvest and they celebrated the harvest, coming in and receiving the harvest.
• 25:08
Speaker 2: John MacArthur, when he talks about this, he says For us Pentecost, for believers Pentecost.
• 25:15
Speaker 2: We can celebrate that.
• 25:17
Speaker 2: It is the first fruits of the inheritance of believers, who is the Holy Spirit.
• 25:28
Speaker 2: So these men from all over the world were gathered together and it's interesting to me.
• 25:37
Speaker 2: I hear people all the time to say God Grant, what about the people in those places who have never heard what's going to happen to them, which, if I'm totally honest with you, I don't know.
• 25:52
Speaker 2: Scripture doesn't address it.
• 25:54
Speaker 2: I do know this.
• 25:56
Speaker 2: Scripture does tell us if you do not believe in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, you will not be saved.
• 26:00
Speaker 2: But this little passage gives me hope, because here's why.
• 26:09
Speaker 2: Think about the countries that were represented there Turkey, iran, north Africa.
• 26:16
Speaker 2: Listen, these places had a godly and Christian influence well before the Western world did.
• 26:23
Speaker 2: I can't answer all those questions.
• 26:26
Speaker 2: I know this God is a good God and he calls us to trust in him, and he has been doing it around the world, obviously for a long time.
• 26:38
Speaker 2: So, instead of getting caught up in that, what we need to do is we need to believe in Jesus Christ and receive the Holy Spirit.
• 26:48
Speaker 2: So here's what happens these men they were, it seems like.
• 26:51
Speaker 2: It seems like they were walking down the street and they heard this sound of a mighty rushing wind.
• 26:56
Speaker 2: And then they looked in and they saw divided tongues of fire over the apostles, and the apostles were speaking their own language.
• 27:04
Speaker 2: Now, what it means here there is debate, we won't spend a lot of time, but just let me.
• 27:11
Speaker 2: Let me tell you some.
• 27:12
Speaker 2: Some will say that that these guys are speaking a, a praise language.
• 27:17
Speaker 2: It's, it's guttural utterances, that that we really don't understand.
• 27:23
Speaker 2: I'm not convinced of that.
• 27:27
Speaker 2: It's it's what our pentecostal brothers would call speaking in tongues.
• 27:31
Speaker 2: I'm not convinced that's it's what our Pentecostal brothers would call speaking in tongues.
• 27:32
Speaker 2: I'm not convinced that's what's happening here, because there are people who are hearing in their own language.
• 27:38
Speaker 2: Now some will argue that it could have still been speaking in tongues, but God gave a miracle of hearing to those who passed by and they could hear in their own language.
• 27:49
Speaker 2: Some would say that the disciples, they were just speaking their normal language and again, it was a miracle of hearing by those who passed by and even though they were speaking Arabic, they heard their own language.
• 28:03
Speaker 2: The most straightforward reading to me is this Most straightforward reading to me is this the Spirit came upon the disciples and they began to speak languages that they didn't know, known languages that they didn't know, by the power of the Holy Spirit, and people walked by and heard their own languages.
• 28:30
Speaker 2: But before we get caught up in how they were saying what they were saying, let's don't miss what they were saying.
• 28:38
Speaker 2: Look with me in verse 11.
• 28:42
Speaker 2: At the end of verse 11, it says we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.
• 28:54
Speaker 2: See the promise fulfilled.
• 28:58
Speaker 2: Jesus said in verse Acts 1.8, you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you and you will be my witnesses In Jerusalem, judea, samaria and the uttermost parts of the world.
• 29:19
Speaker 2: And the apostles had no idea how that was going to happen.
• 29:24
Speaker 2: But look right here, just a few verses over, it's already happening.
• 29:30
Speaker 2: The Holy Spirit comes and they receive power and they're doing this thing that they didn't even know that they could do.
• 29:36
Speaker 2: They're speaking in languages that they didn't even know that they had never heard.
• 29:40
Speaker 2: And guess what's happening?
• 29:42
Speaker 2: People in Jerusalem, judea, samaria and people from all around the world are hearing the witness of the mighty acts of God.
• 29:53
Speaker 2: God is fulfilling the promise that he made to them.
• 30:02
Speaker 2: And hear me, church, hear me.
• 30:05
Speaker 2: The call is still to us.
• 30:09
Speaker 2: I told you a few weeks ago the call is not to become witnesses.
• 30:17
Speaker 2: Listen and you need to do things.
• 30:22
Speaker 2: You need to study God's Word so that you can always speak of God.
• 30:32
Speaker 2: You need to study methods of evangelism so you can experience Christian growth in those areas of your life.
• 30:41
Speaker 2: But hear me, those things don't make you witnesses.
• 30:49
Speaker 2: What scripture tells us is that, as believers, we are witnesses by the power of the Holy Spirit and we need to be speaking.
• 31:05
Speaker 2: The mighty works of God.
• 31:10
Speaker 2: So I don't know where you are this morning.
• 31:14
Speaker 2: The mighty works of God.
• 31:14
Speaker 2: So I don't know where you are this morning.
• 31:20
Speaker 2: But there's no doubt that there is some people in here who have never experienced the mighty works of God.
• 31:27
Speaker 2: Hear me this morning.
• 31:28
Speaker 2: If you have never trusted in Christ, you are like those bones in that valley and you are cut off from God, without life and without hope, and there's nothing you can do about it because you are dry bones.
• 31:44
Speaker 2: But hear me, jesus came and he lived a perfect life and he died on the cross.
• 31:59
Speaker 2: And he lived a perfect life and he died on the cross and he arose and he ascended to the Father and he has sent the Holy Spirit to give us life.
• 32:02
Speaker 2: And if you are tired of being cut off from God, what you need to do is believe in the name of the Lord, jesus Christ, and be saved and receive the Holy Spirit, as Peter is going to say in Acts, chapter 2, you need to repent, be baptized, receive the Spirit and be witnesses.
• 32:28
Speaker 2: If you've never trusted Him this morning, I pray that here today you will trust in Jesus Christ.
• 32:38
Speaker 2: But if you have but you are not living in the power of the Holy Spirit, here's what you need to do this morning you need to repent, you need to repent.
• 32:54
Speaker 2: You need to repent.
• 32:55
Speaker 2: You are given the gift of the Holy Spirit when you trusted in Christ and if you are not experiencing and living in His power, you need to repent and you need to live there and do what he has made you into To speak of the mighty works of God.
• 33:15
Speaker 2: We're going to pray and the musicians are going to come in and we're going to sing a hymn of invitation.
• 33:21
Speaker 2: If you've never trusted Christ as your Savior, as we stand and sing, we invite you to come forward.
• 33:27
Speaker 2: We want to pray for you.
• 33:28
Speaker 2: There are counselors who will take you out and share the gospel message with you again and help you understand how you can trust in Christ.
• 33:37
Speaker 2: If you have and you just need to repent because you're not living in the power of the Spirit, we invite you to come and kneel at these steps and pray and repent.
• 33:48
Speaker 2: We invite you to come down to us.
