- 0:43The And we're back. It's the third time I'm
- 0:54recording an episode and thank you for listening.
- 0:58I've got a few followers, a few likes, a few blah, blah blahs,
- 1:03whatever you're looking for when you're hosting a podcast, you
- 1:06know, all those things just really mean that you're engaging
- 1:09with people. So that's what I'm trying to do.
- 1:11And again, I got to give myself the permission to be a beginner,
- 1:16right? I've always loved that quote.
- 1:18Allow yourself to be a beginner. I don't know who said it, but it
- 1:22is true, especially for me when I'm launching a podcast.
- 1:26So just a reminder to you as you embark on your Tuesday, if
- 1:30you're listening to this on Tuesday, remember allow yourself
- 1:34to be a beginner. Just like me.
- 1:37I have no idea what I'm doing, but guess what?
- 1:39I'm learning one podcast episode at a time and with the lovely
- 1:44and constructive and amazing feedback from my friends and
- 1:47family so far. So thank you for that little
- 1:50shout out to Nikki Schumann, who in my last episode mentioned
- 1:54that I was talking a little bit close to the microphone.
- 1:56So we're going to make an adjustment here.
- 1:58Nikki, you better listen to this and let me know if it's better.
- 2:02Okey dokey. So another one of my friends,
- 2:06Ashida, who actually bought me this microphone and inspired me
- 2:10to actually take the leap. Love Yoshida.
- 2:12You're amazing. She had some great feedback
- 2:14after my second episode and she asked if you know, it might be
- 2:19worth kind of talking more about what adversity is in the
- 2:22different types and whether obviously there's many, many
- 2:27degrees of diversity, diversity, adversity, A lot of cities in
- 2:34this adversity. Any who there's varying degrees
- 2:40of adversity from your everyday stuff, you know, sort of the
- 2:45small stuff that we sweat to real legit adversity that is is
- 2:50very serious and difficult to get through.
- 2:54So I just wanted to take a few minutes and kind of dive into a
- 2:58really cool blog post that I'm going to link to in the show
- 3:02notes. So anything I talk about or
- 3:05reference or I'm inspired by, I'm going to link to in these
- 3:08show notes. So I was looking around about
- 3:11adversity and kind of researching, you know, how many
- 3:14different types are there? Is this classified in in a
- 3:18certain way, you know, when people are studying adversity?
- 3:21And I found a really cool blog post on simplicable.com and it
- 3:26really talks about I saw the headline and I was like, whoa,
- 3:2955 examples of adversity. So I'm going to link to that
- 3:33blog post so you can check it out.
- 3:35It's a really good one. But I was honestly just shocked
- 3:40to see that there were this many and it really did make sense to
- 3:43me. And it just reminded me that
- 3:45there's so many slices of that and stories that come from these
- 3:49different types of adversity that it's just difficult to deal
- 3:53with, right? So let's cite simplicables,
- 3:56definition of adversity. So adversity is a sustained
- 4:00difficulty or problem faced by an individual or group.
- 4:05This denotes a problem that is above the regular challenges of
- 4:09the human experience such that adversity may put you at a
- 4:13disadvantage to others. Adversity can be structural and
- 4:17systematic or a result of misfortune such as an injury.
- 4:22The following are common examples of adversity.
- 4:26So I'm not going to go through all 55 because I am going to
- 4:29link to this and you can dive into this awesome blog post
- 4:32here, but I will name a few if I if I'm going down here.
- 4:38We got addiction being fired or terminated, having a disability
- 4:45which you know looking at that now, disabilities in recent
- 4:50years have been rightfully kind of examined and that
- 4:55disabilities are not necessarily disabilities, right.
- 4:59People with different abilities and sort of those special needs.
- 5:03That's a whole different ball game as far as you know,
- 5:07adversity and just what what someone with special needs is
- 5:12going through and we are going to bring some people on in the
- 5:15future that that know about navigating that really you know
- 5:22challenging challenging situation.
- 5:24But it it can be a beautiful thing to really connect with
- 5:27people with special needs and and such a wonderful community.
- 5:31So just wanted to give a shout out there, other kinds of
- 5:35diversity, family conflict obviously, right.
- 5:39Every family has different sets of things that they go through
- 5:44at different phases of life and just kind of how to navigate
- 5:47that along the way. Fear or anxiety is a type of
- 5:52adversity. I personally I've had anxiety
- 5:55since I was young. You know it's been a double
- 5:58edged sword. It pushed me to to do well in
- 6:00sports and play at a high level but and like I did well at
- 6:04school and all that, but that could take me down anxiety and
- 6:08it still does from time to time. So I have to manage that daily
- 6:13with with different coping mechanisms.
- 6:16Shout out to the Anxiety Tool Kit podcast, Kimberly Queenland.
- 6:19Amazing. Check that one out.
- 6:22Another one. Let's see among the 55 examples
- 6:25of adversity or types of adversity, loss of a loved one.
- 6:31Don't we all understand the pain of that?
- 6:32Whether it's a family member, a friend, a a pet, particularly a
- 6:38pet, right? Those unconditional love.
- 6:42I think all of us have dealt with the loss of a loved one at
- 6:46some point in our lives and that's just something that we
- 6:50kind of have to learn that grieving process and and how to
- 6:53get through that mental health challenges and other type of
- 6:57adversity. I really, this one's close to my
- 7:00heart having just you know a very active mind.
- 7:05Excuse me? Like choking as I say that, a
- 7:09very active mind that never stops.
- 7:12I have to just make sure that I'm, you know, getting sleep,
- 7:15getting water, getting exercise, just going offline every once in
- 7:20a while. And part of my mental health
- 7:21journey has been like being open, right?
- 7:24Being open about anxiety that I struggle with even though I'm
- 7:29super extroverted and, you know, hyper without coffee.
- 7:33Trust me, I am in my head a lot. So adventures and adversity is
- 7:37coming from that perspective as well.
- 7:40That I have definitely navigated mental health challenges and
- 7:43just would love to hear inspiring stories from all of
- 7:46you about how you've done the same other types of adversity.
- 7:51Gosh, there's so many. It's kind of sad.
- 7:54But the good news is we can get through it.
- 7:56Work related stress, financial struggles.
- 7:59Hugely, hugely stressful in this modern day and age, right where
- 8:04it's everybody, you know, not everybody.
- 8:07I shouldn't say everybody, nobody.
- 8:09A lot of people are very materialistic.
- 8:12I myself try to put myself kind of in the middle.
- 8:15I like nice things, but it doesn't like rule my world.
- 8:18But I am human. And you know, it's nice to have
- 8:22comfy things and all that stuff. But when you have financial
- 8:26issues too, like how do you get through that?
- 8:27What do you tell yourself? How do you calm your nervous
- 8:31system? How do you kind of overcome
- 8:35adversity when you're trying to pay off debt and grow your
- 8:38salary and find jobs in a tough market and all that?
- 8:42So can have a whole career section on that?
- 8:47Gosh, I could go on and on. I'm going to just take a few
- 8:49more minutes. So another one regret type of
- 8:52adversity. Gosh, I'll get into this story.
- 8:57One regret that comes to mind for me.
- 9:00Played softball in college, and honestly, I quit like halfway
- 9:04through my third season. So that's the whole thing I
- 9:07still dream about sometimes. We'll get into that.
- 9:11Another episode on athlete PTSD? No, I'm kidding.
- 9:15No, not really. Just, you know, regret on
- 9:19decisions you made, things you did or didn't do.
- 9:23Definitely some adversity there and some hopefully stories we
- 9:28can share here on how to get through those kinds of things.
- 9:33Physical limitations, geographic isolation or challenges,
- 9:38loneliness. You know, we're surrounded by
- 9:40people and surrounded by apps and devices, but I think a lot
- 9:45of people, especially post COVID, experience a lot of
- 9:48loneliness. So what stories can we tell on
- 9:51this podcast to kind of help you get through that, to know that,
- 9:55you know, if you're lonely now, it doesn't mean you're going to
- 9:57be lonely forever? I just had a really interesting
- 10:02thought, too. I'm recording this in a room in
- 10:04my guest bedroom, which is now my new office.
- 10:06And oh gosh, I I definitely had some low moments in this room.
- 10:12It's kind of funny. I just one of my little personal
- 10:17breakdowns I've had in my life happen in this room, and I just
- 10:21remember not feeling great and not really ever thinking things
- 10:24were going to be great again. And it's really interesting to
- 10:29be recording this podcast and feeling so good in the same
- 10:32spot. So just another testament to,
- 10:36you know, you can overcome your shit one day at a time, one step
- 10:40at a time. All right guys, I think I've
- 10:43babbled a little bit, but I think I'm getting better.
- 10:47My voice isn't as close to the microphone.
- 10:49Hopefully it sounds better. Nikki and Ashita.
- 10:52Hopefully this kind of dives into some more of the different
- 10:56types of adversity. And I did just want to call
- 10:59attention to that. Like you know, we were talking
- 11:01about before or I was talking about to myself.
- 11:04There are various degrees of it, right?
- 11:08And everybody's journey is different.
- 11:11And the goal of this podcast is to really just help people be
- 11:14vulnerable and open and kind of take the stigma out of the some
- 11:17of the struggles that we all go through because it's all human.
- 11:22All right, Well, I talked to Nikki about my sign off and she
- 11:25agreed that I can kind of just give it a go for my 17 Spotify
- 11:30followers and see how cheesy I can get improvise for my closing
- 11:36sign off. So here we go.
- 11:39And with that, my friends, I'm going to close out this episode
- 11:42of Adventures and Adversity and inspirational podcast with Brie
- 11:47Wilson on the mic. All right, the message for
- 11:51Tuesday. The next time you encounter
- 11:54adversity, you know what you can do.
- 11:58Log back on to this podcast and look through one of my three
- 12:02episodes. And that is really going to get
- 12:04you going. Oh, Nikki, that was bad.
- 12:07I got to bring my A game next time.
- 12:10Oh, man. See, now the pressure's on.
- 12:12All right. The next episode will be funny.
- 12:15The exit will be better. I promise.
- 12:20All right, guys, have a wonderful week.
- 12:23I'm going to finish recording here, and because I don't know a
- 12:28lot about podcasting, I don't know how to edit all of that
- 12:31out. So thanks for tuning in for
- 12:33lining up some guests. I promise I won't be talking at
- 12:36you forever and this is the longest closing of my life.
- 12:40Have an awesome week, face your fears, and that's all I have to
- 12:45say. Peeps Bye bye
- 13:27the.
