- 0:07This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:13Hi there.
- 0:15Just a reminder that Finding God at Work
- 0:16isn't just a podcast, it's also an online
- 0:19course.
- 0:20Check it out at FindingGodAtWork.org.
- 0:28You may know that I work at a
- 0:30food bank, and one of the things that
- 0:32we use at the food bank is this
- 0:33map.
- 0:34We have 13 counties in our service area.
- 0:37We're kind of all the major counties of
- 0:38Northern Illinois besides Cook County, where the city
- 0:41of Chicago is.
- 0:42We have a partner organization called Greater Chicago
- 0:44that serves Cook County.
- 0:46So we're looking at those 13 counties as
- 0:48that's where we do our work.
- 0:50The neighbors who are in those counties, those
- 0:53are the people that we're trying to serve
- 0:54and come alongside.
- 0:55So this map is like our scorecard for
- 0:57our work as a food bank, and it's
- 0:59got yellow and red and green.
- 1:02So if a county is green or an
- 1:05area of a county is green, that means
- 1:07that people are getting access to the food
- 1:09that they need.
- 1:10And if it's yellow, they have less access,
- 1:12and if it's red, they have way less
- 1:13access.
- 1:14Red is a real concern.
- 1:15So it's a measure of neighbors who face
- 1:17food insecurity.
- 1:19Do they have access to food through our
- 1:20network in some way?
- 1:22Whether that's through a food pantry or a
- 1:23soup kitchen or our home delivery program or
- 1:26one of our mobile food trucks or any
- 1:29of the things that we do.
- 1:30Do we create some point of access where
- 1:33a neighbor could get the food that they
- 1:34and their household need to thrive within that
- 1:37service area?
- 1:39OK, so when our current CEO came into
- 1:43that role, that was I think about 12
- 1:45years ago, that map did not look super
- 1:48good.
- 1:48There was lots of red and yellow and
- 1:50some green closer to the center.
- 1:52But one of her priorities when she became
- 1:56CEO was to use that map to direct
- 1:59our efforts.
- 2:00So we got really clear about the data.
- 2:02We continued to measure.
- 2:03We figured out where the different resources were
- 2:06going and why.
- 2:07We started asking tough questions.
- 2:09And then eventually we started seeing those numbers
- 2:13move.
- 2:13It's like, oh, we're going to decide where
- 2:15we do a mobile truck event, not just
- 2:17randomly, but based on the data.
- 2:20We're going to see, like, here's here's a
- 2:21little circle of of orange.
- 2:23How can we get more resources there in
- 2:25the next few months?
- 2:26Now, that wasn't the way that the food
- 2:28bank started.
- 2:29When the food bank started 40 some years
- 2:30ago, food banking as a concept was still
- 2:33young.
- 2:34Pantries were just getting started sort of randomly
- 2:36based on relationships and people who were interested
- 2:38in churches and other things.
- 2:40And so, you know, just sort of organically
- 2:42grew in a kind of random, less strategic
- 2:44way.
- 2:45And that makes sense in the kind of
- 2:46early entrepreneurial years.
- 2:48But that is also what led to years
- 2:50later, looking at that map and realizing, like,
- 2:52there are just holes in this map of
- 2:54where we don't have good service for people
- 2:57that need access to food.
- 2:58And so it was only by becoming more
- 3:00intentional and more strategic that we were able
- 3:02to ameliorate that.
- 3:04And thankfully, recently, within the past couple of
- 3:05years, we've hit 90 percent plus green in
- 3:09more than 90 percent of our county areas.
- 3:11And so super encouraging.
- 3:13And it's a great example, I think, of
- 3:15not just our CEOs leadership, but also the
- 3:17team working collaboratively, bringing in the data, aligning
- 3:20that with our operations, making sure that the
- 3:22resources are going where they really need to
- 3:24go so that more neighbors have the food
- 3:26that they need.
- 3:28OK, what does this story have to do
- 3:30with becoming wholehearted, becoming healthier Christians at work?
- 3:35Well, it's an example of somebody, our CEO
- 3:38and the other members of the team, thinking
- 3:41really hard about something and then executing on
- 3:45the basis of that thought.
- 3:47And so we're going to start talking about
- 3:49our theological anthropology, who human beings are with
- 3:52Jesus as our anthropologist, as our teacher, teaching
- 3:55us what matters.
- 3:57And Jesus, in the passage we looked at
- 3:59last time, said that we can love God
- 4:01with all our heart and with all our
- 4:03soul and with all our strength and with
- 4:06all our mind.
- 4:07So we're actually going to start on that
- 4:08mind part of who we are, our thoughts,
- 4:12our capacity to think is incredibly vital to
- 4:16our life at work.
- 4:17Imagine what would have happened if our CEO
- 4:20had simply not done the work of thinking
- 4:23about that map.
- 4:24What if she was just like, oh, you
- 4:26know, we've already got a bunch of food
- 4:28pantries, let's just keep resourcing the ones we
- 4:30have.
- 4:32You know, like there are probably food banks
- 4:34somewhere that have that approach where it's just
- 4:36like, oh, yeah, no, it's not our job
- 4:38to look at our whole service area strategically
- 4:39and intentionally, we'll just service the food pantries
- 4:41that already exist.
- 4:43But our CEO said, no, let's think.
- 4:45Let's do the hard work of thinking and
- 4:47see if we can make a difference.
- 4:48And it did make a difference.
- 4:50So what does that have to do with
- 4:51loving God?
- 4:52Well, I want to posit that there's not
- 4:55such a big gap between thinking to solve
- 4:59problems at work and loving God with your
- 5:02mind, that part of loving God with your
- 5:04mind in as much as it relates to
- 5:06our jobs is to do the hard work
- 5:09of thinking that your job entails, that that
- 5:11is how you love God with your mind.
- 5:14OK, now, is there anywhere in scripture that
- 5:16says that?
- 5:17I thought through, can I find a scripture
- 5:19passage that says this explicitly, and I found
- 5:22this in Proverbs and it's more poetic as
- 5:25Proverbs sometimes is, but I think it gets
- 5:28at this idea.
- 5:29So this is chapter twenty five, verse two.
- 5:34It is the glory of God to conceal
- 5:35things, but the glory of kings is to
- 5:39search things out.
- 5:41It is the glory of God to conceal
- 5:43things, but the glory of kings is to
- 5:46search things out.
- 5:49It's almost like God is playing hide and
- 5:51seek with us.
- 5:52There are things that have to be discovered.
- 5:55They have to be thought through.
- 5:56They have to be figured out and God
- 5:58conceals them and there's a glory in the
- 6:01way that God conceals them.
- 6:02It's like God is almost like preparing things
- 6:04for us to figure out, but then it
- 6:06is a glory of kings and kings representing
- 6:07like the pinnacle of human experience.
- 6:09So the glory of human beings to seek
- 6:12these things out to discover them.
- 6:14So there's a glory in thinking.
- 6:17There's a glory in discovery.
- 6:19There's a glory in making logical connections from
- 6:21A to B to C.
- 6:24We also see this in the ministry of
- 6:26Jesus himself and looking at Jesus's ministry in
- 6:29these terms was suggested to me by Dallas
- 6:32Willard in his wonderful essay, Jesus the Logician.
- 6:36So I want to take a passage that
- 6:38illustrates this idea and then come back to
- 6:41Dallas's essay in order to kind of put
- 6:43a cap on it.
- 6:44This is Matthew chapter 11 starts with a
- 6:46miracle story in verse 22.
- 7:31Okay, so let's look at the logic behind
- 7:36all of these things.
- 7:37So first the presenting case of the miracle
- 7:39story itself.
- 7:40The Pharisees are not debating whether or not
- 7:42Jesus did the miracle.
- 7:43It's just so obvious that this person can
- 7:45now talk and see that they're trying to
- 7:47explain the miracle.
- 7:49So the people are questioning, could this be
- 7:51the son of David?
- 7:51Could Jesus be the Messiah is the miracle
- 7:53evidence of his Messiah ship?
- 7:55The Pharisees are not hot about that idea.
- 7:57So instead they say no, no, no, he's
- 8:00driving out demons by Satan by a title
- 8:02of Satan Beelzebul and then Jesus knowing their
- 8:06thoughts challenges them.
- 8:08He doesn't challenge them by brow beating them.
- 8:10He doesn't challenge them by just telling them
- 8:12that they're wrong.
- 8:13He asks whether what they're saying is logical
- 8:16whether it makes sense.
- 8:18So he says every Kingdom divided against itself
- 8:20will be ruined and every city or household
- 8:22divided against itself will not stand.
- 8:26So he's saying if you've got an authority
- 8:27like in a Kingdom or a city or
- 8:29a family and then you've got other people
- 8:31that are like agents of that authority, but
- 8:33then the agents are fighting each other like
- 8:35they're not going to execute policy of that
- 8:37authority very well.
- 8:38Like the Kingdom is going to fall apart.
- 8:40The family is going to fall apart.
- 8:40The city is going to fall apart.
- 8:42So you're saying that like Satan is somehow
- 8:44sending me to drive out other agents of
- 8:46Satan.
- 8:46It sounds like the Kingdom of Satan is
- 8:47kind of imploding in your model.
- 8:49Does that really make sense?
- 8:51Then he gives another example.
- 8:52He says, okay, you also have exorcists.
- 8:55There are people apparently Jesus calls them your
- 8:56people connected with the Pharisees who were driving
- 8:59out demons and purportedly doing that as a
- 9:01work of God.
- 9:02And so Jesus is like if they drive
- 9:04out a demon and your conclusion is they're
- 9:06doing the work of God, then by applying
- 9:08the same logic when I drive out a
- 9:09demon, you should be concluding that I'm doing
- 9:11the work of God.
- 9:12So those exorcists will be your judges, right?
- 9:15If they were doing the work of God,
- 9:17then I'm doing the work of God.
- 9:19And then he gives his final if then
- 9:21and this is the encouraging part, but if
- 9:23it is by the Spirit of God that
- 9:24I drive out demons, then the Kingdom of
- 9:27God has come upon you.
- 9:28So what he's saying is the evidence suggests
- 9:31that the Spirit of God is the power
- 9:34behind my exorcisms.
- 9:35And if that's true, then the Kingdom of
- 9:38God has come upon you.
- 9:39Then the ministry of Jesus is a way
- 9:41into what God is doing in the world.
- 9:43And that's a really good news.
- 9:45Okay, now again, Jesus doesn't browbeat people here.
- 9:49He gently but directly assertively unfolds the logic
- 9:54of their presuppositions.
- 9:55He says, does this make sense?
- 9:57And that's what allows his listeners to draw
- 10:00their own conclusions and to come to a
- 10:02place of conviction about who Jesus is for
- 10:04themselves.
- 10:07And in this essay of Dallas's, he has
- 10:08this incredible thing about Jesus's style, his approach
- 10:11to doing this.
- 10:12And Dallas quotes this proverb, a man convinced
- 10:15against his will is of the same opinion
- 10:17still.
- 10:18And then Dallas responds interpreting this proverb.
- 10:20Yes, and no doubt Jesus understood that.
- 10:22And so he typically aims at real inward
- 10:25change of view that would enable his hearers
- 10:28to become significantly different as people through the
- 10:32workings of their own intellect.
- 10:34They will have, unless they are strongly resistant
- 10:36to the point of blindness, the famous Eureka
- 10:39experience, not the experience of being outdone or
- 10:43beaten down.
- 10:45So Jesus's rhetorical approach here is very humble
- 10:48in the sense that he's not browbeating the
- 10:50Pharisees.
- 10:51He's not emotionally manipulating people.
- 10:53He's not just somehow having like a will
- 10:55to power, a might makes right.
- 10:57He's appealing to people's capacity to reason.
- 11:01He's laying it out there and saying the
- 11:03Pharisees just said something.
- 11:04Does it make sense or not?
- 11:06We can think it through.
- 11:08A leads to B leads to C and
- 11:10that leads his listeners if they're willing to
- 11:12hear to internalize what he's saying for themselves
- 11:15to realize like yes, I am persuaded.
- 11:18I wasn't forced into this by somebody else.
- 11:20I can see the connections that Jesus is
- 11:22making.
- 11:22I can trace that path myself.
- 11:24I think it works.
- 11:25Jesus is a logician.
- 11:28Okay, now let's bring this back to our
- 11:30lives at work.
- 11:32Jesus is setting an example of using logic
- 11:35really effectively to honor other people like in
- 11:38this case, he's literally teaching, right?
- 11:40So it's a kind of a more rational,
- 11:41discursive frame of work to begin with the
- 11:44work of teaching but he's using logic very
- 11:46intentionally and very carefully to draw people into
- 11:51this Eureka moment so that they can learn
- 11:52so that they can grow.
- 11:54But for all of us Jesus is a
- 11:56model of using logic to accomplish the necessary
- 11:59work.
- 12:00For him it was the work of teaching
- 12:01in this particular example, but for us it's
- 12:04whatever the problems we're facing in our workplace.
- 12:07So that's why I started with the example
- 12:08of we've got this pran map that's showing
- 12:11some areas in red and some in orange
- 12:12and some in green.
- 12:13You've got to think through A leads to
- 12:15B leads to C like oh we have
- 12:17a food pantry in this area and we
- 12:19don't have a food pantry in this area,
- 12:21but we do have a mobile truck.
- 12:22We can deploy to that area and look
- 12:24at the budget and figure out how to
- 12:26make it work and that's what we're doing
- 12:27every year at the food bank is trying
- 12:29to keep that map as green as possible
- 12:30all across our service area.
- 12:33So now think about your environment.
- 12:35What are the problems that confront you in
- 12:37your workplace?
- 12:38Maybe you're in sales.
- 12:40You've got to think through your conversion metrics.
- 12:43That's really important for you to do in
- 12:45order to do your work with excellence.
- 12:48You've got to know how many phone calls
- 12:50do I need to make in order to
- 12:51get a sale, roughly speaking, right?
- 12:53It's always unpredictable, but you've got to know
- 12:55those numbers.
- 12:55You've got to be willing to think through
- 12:57those numbers and then to plan your week
- 12:58ahead of time based on how many calls
- 13:00you need to make in order to make
- 13:02the right number of sales, right?
- 13:03Like it's not rocket science.
- 13:04Now, let's say your job is rocket science,
- 13:06right?
- 13:06Then what do you need to do?
- 13:07You need to carefully think through engineering, right?
- 13:10You need to make sure that all the
- 13:11puzzle pieces fit together in the right way
- 13:13and double check them.
- 13:14Whatever your job is, there are going to
- 13:16be problems that require intense logical thought.
- 13:21Okay, now, why is this not how we
- 13:24always do things?
- 13:26Why is it that sometimes we end up
- 13:27just being more random and less rational, right?
- 13:30We end up just doing random things.
- 13:32So like if we're in sales, we just
- 13:33sort of make as many calls as we
- 13:35kind of feel like making or like hopefully
- 13:37not if we're rocket scientists, but hey, you
- 13:39know, there's been some problems in some rocket
- 13:41science companies recently, right?
- 13:42Like not measuring twice and cutting once, but
- 13:45maybe hurrying things through without a proper review
- 13:48process or why do we do this?
- 13:50Why do we end up not doing the
- 13:52hard work of thinking?
- 13:54I think there are two reasons.
- 13:56One is that it is hard work.
- 14:01It takes a certain effort, a certain pain
- 14:05even, to do the work of thinking.
- 14:09And so we can have a kind of
- 14:11intellectual laziness where we just aren't willing to
- 14:13sit down and go through the mental effort
- 14:15required to figure out how A leads to
- 14:17B leads to C within our domain of
- 14:19responsibility.
- 14:20The theologian John R.W. Stott had this
- 14:23great quote.
- 14:24I read it in a foreword to one
- 14:25of his books once.
- 14:27He had this acronym he would use, P
- 14:29-I-M or PIM, for pain in the
- 14:32mind.
- 14:33He's like pain in the mind.
- 14:34This is what he said.
- 14:34He says, there are certain tasks which cannot
- 14:37be done without acute pain in the mind.
- 14:40They are rarely fun, but always worthwhile.
- 14:45So like at the food bank, when we're
- 14:46digging into all those questions with the pram
- 14:48app and trying to figure out the budgets,
- 14:49people are not having fun.
- 14:50People are like, I don't want to lose,
- 14:52you know, a mobile market truck in this
- 14:54county in order to send it to that
- 14:55county.
- 14:55Like we've been doing that one for years.
- 14:57Like it's tough.
- 14:58You've got to figure out what the trade
- 14:59-offs are and you've got to embrace your
- 15:01own emotions and figure out why do I
- 15:03feel this way when I know that we're
- 15:04trying to all pull towards the same goal
- 15:06and can I trust my leaders and all
- 15:08the complex dynamics that go into that.
- 15:10But there's going to be acute pain in
- 15:12the mind as part of the process.
- 15:14You're going to have to experience that cognitive
- 15:16dissonance of like, I haven't figured this out
- 15:18yet and it's uncomfortable.
- 15:20And if you're not willing to go through
- 15:21that pain, you can never become a good
- 15:23worker, right?
- 15:25You're always at best going to be a
- 15:27little bit sloppy in what you do.
- 15:30But if you're willing to go through the
- 15:31acute mental pain, then you get to the
- 15:33other side of it.
- 15:34And at the other side of that acute
- 15:35mental pain, I think is what that Proverbs
- 15:37verse said, it is the glory of kings
- 15:39to search things out.
- 15:41You can experience glory when you get to
- 15:44the other side of solving the problem and
- 15:45it works and the map turns green or
- 15:48the sail goes through or the light bulb
- 15:50moment happens for your student or the rocket
- 15:52takes off successfully.
- 15:54That's pleasure.
- 15:55That's glory.
- 15:56That's joy.
- 15:57That's, that's what we were meant to do
- 15:58as workers to realize the outcome of all
- 16:01this problem solving effort that we've put in.
- 16:04And by God's grace, we can experience moments
- 16:07like that in our working lives, even though
- 16:09they're not all the time and often we
- 16:11face frustration, but it's worth moving through the
- 16:14pain to get to the pleasure of that
- 16:17kind of problem solving success.
- 16:20Okay.
- 16:20So that's the first thing is we just
- 16:21have to be willing to embrace the pain,
- 16:22right?
- 16:23We have to be willing to go through
- 16:24the pain to get to the pleasure of
- 16:25problem solving.
- 16:27Well, that was kind of an alliteration.
- 16:28I didn't even intend that we have to
- 16:30be willing to embrace the pain to get
- 16:32to the pleasure of problem solving.
- 16:34Say that sometimes fast.
- 16:35Okay.
- 16:35The second reason though, the second reason that
- 16:37we sometimes don't embrace reason in the way
- 16:40that Jesus sets an example for us to
- 16:41embrace reason in our work is that we
- 16:44are confused about the relationship between reason and
- 16:46goodness.
- 16:48Sometimes this is based on our view of
- 16:49Jesus himself.
- 16:50Like it's often to have a stereotype to
- 16:52view of Jesus where Jesus is nice, but
- 16:54he isn't necessarily very smart.
- 16:56But again, when you read Jesus in the
- 16:57gospels, that is not how he comes across.
- 16:59I actually just had a lunch with a
- 17:01friend who read the gospel of Mark for
- 17:02the first time.
- 17:03And this is one of the things he
- 17:04commented on is like Jesus does not come
- 17:05across as this nice pushover Jesus that you
- 17:08sometimes have floating around in the cultural ethos.
- 17:11Jesus is very precise in his thinking.
- 17:15And that should give us a clue as
- 17:16followers of Jesus that there's a connection between
- 17:18thinking hard and becoming like Jesus.
- 17:21So let's go to C.S. Lewis.
- 17:24He puts this so well.
- 17:25He frames it in terms of what's called
- 17:26the cardinal virtue of prudence, our kind of
- 17:29classical Christian virtue in the tradition.
- 17:31And he starts describing that based on this
- 17:34idea that Jesus said we should become like
- 17:36children.
- 17:37He says, Christ never meant that we were
- 17:39to remain children in intelligence.
- 17:42On the contrary, he told us to be
- 17:44not only as harmless as doves, but also
- 17:47as wise as serpents.
- 17:49He wants a child's heart, but a grown
- 17:52-up's head.
- 17:53He wants us to be simple, single-minded,
- 17:56affectionate, and teachable as good children are.
- 17:58But he also wants every bit of intelligence
- 18:00we have to be alert at its job
- 18:02and in first-class fighting trim.
- 18:04The fact that you are giving money to
- 18:06a charity does not mean that you need
- 18:07not try to find out whether that charity
- 18:09is a fraud or not.
- 18:11The fact that what you were thinking about
- 18:12is God himself, for example, when you are
- 18:14praying, does not mean that you can be
- 18:16content with the same baby-ish ideas which
- 18:18you had when you were a five-year
- 18:19-old.
- 18:20It is, of course, quite true that God
- 18:22will not love you any less or have
- 18:23less use for you if you happen to
- 18:25be born with a very second-rate brain.
- 18:27He has room for people with very little
- 18:29sense, but he wants everyone to use what
- 18:31sense they have.
- 18:33The proper motto is not be good, sweet
- 18:34maid, and let who can be clever, but
- 18:37be good, sweet maid, and don't forget that
- 18:38this involves being as clever as you can.
- 18:40God is no fonder of intellectual slackers than
- 18:43of any other slackers.
- 18:45Okay.
- 18:47I just love reading C.S. Lewis.
- 18:49So, you know, from a different century, different
- 18:51frame of mind in some ways.
- 18:53But I think it's jarring in a good
- 18:55way, right?
- 18:55Like when he just says, like, hey, maybe
- 18:56you have a second-rate brain.
- 18:57That's not your fault, but use the brand
- 18:59you've got.
- 19:00We want to be as wise as serpents,
- 19:02but as innocent as doves.
- 19:05So it's not that being smarter is necessarily
- 19:07being holier or being better or being more
- 19:10like Jesus.
- 19:11It's that using whatever intelligence God has given
- 19:14you as well as you can is the
- 19:16better part of following Jesus whenever you're solving
- 19:19a problem.
- 19:20And usually at work, we're solving a problem.
- 19:23And so a big, big part of loving
- 19:25God with all your mind at work is
- 19:27thinking as clearly and carefully and precisely as
- 19:31you can and then applying that effort to
- 19:34the problem at hand.
- 19:36Now I want to end by looking at
- 19:37just one more verse.
- 19:39This comes from 1 Corinthians 2.
- 19:41Paul is talking about mystery.
- 19:43He's talking about how God is beyond our
- 19:44understanding.
- 19:45And he quotes this verse that says, for
- 19:47who has understood the mind of the Lord
- 19:49so as to instruct him, but we have
- 19:52the mind of Christ.
- 19:55So what Paul's saying is God is beyond
- 19:57our understanding.
- 19:58God is mysterious.
- 19:59God is vast.
- 20:01God is eternal.
- 20:02We couldn't hope to encompass him, to contain
- 20:05him, to grasp him, to understand him.
- 20:08But we have the mind of Christ.
- 20:11Because God comes into union with us through
- 20:13Jesus Christ, we can experience his life in
- 20:18our minds, in our thoughts as we go
- 20:21about our day.
- 20:22And so I would argue that problem solving
- 20:25at work, even in the midst of pain
- 20:27in the mind, right?
- 20:28Even in the midst of that acute mental
- 20:30pain where you're trying to figure it out
- 20:32and you're not there yet.
- 20:33That is a context for deep union with
- 20:36God.
- 20:38When you have the mind of Christ, that
- 20:40doesn't just mean that you think holy thoughts.
- 20:42It means that while you use your mind
- 20:44to solve the problems that you have to
- 20:47solve as part of your faithfulness to Jesus
- 20:49in your everyday life, Jesus is right there
- 20:51with you.
- 20:52You have the mind of Christ for solving
- 20:54your problem in Microsoft Excel.
- 20:56You have the mind of Christ for solving
- 20:58your problem, babysitting those kids.
- 21:00You have the mind of Christ for solving
- 21:01that problem, grading those papers.
- 21:03You have the mind of Christ for solving
- 21:04the problem, sweeping those floors.
- 21:06Christ is with you in the nitty-gritty
- 21:08problems of your workplace to help you solve
- 21:10them.
- 21:11And when you get through that pain to
- 21:13that pleasure, that glory, it's not just a
- 21:15glory of enjoying a problem solved.
- 21:18It's a glory of union with Christ being
- 21:21with him in the work that you're doing.
- 21:24One story just to wrap this up.
- 21:26When I went to high school, we had
- 21:28a facilities manager named Mr. Dunham.
- 21:30And Mr. Dunham, like many facilities managers, was
- 21:32a little rough round the edges, you know,
- 21:35say how it is, not very polished in
- 21:37his speech.
- 21:38And I was talking with him once, and
- 21:40we had these mini buses that the school
- 21:42owned for taking students to like athletic events
- 21:43and things of that nature, 15 passenger vans
- 21:46or even larger 25 passenger buses.
- 21:49And he was doing some maintenance on one
- 21:50of them.
- 21:51He didn't want to take it to the
- 21:51shop.
- 21:52He wanted to do it himself.
- 21:53And he was telling me, he just kept
- 21:54trying and trying and he couldn't get it
- 21:56right.
- 21:56He couldn't get it right.
- 21:57He's getting so frustrated and so angry.
- 21:59And then he just thought, duh, I'm an
- 22:01idiot.
- 22:01I should pray about it.
- 22:03And then as soon as I prayed, the
- 22:04thing synced right into place.
- 22:07And I was just so moved by his
- 22:09description because here I am, you know, studying
- 22:11history and science and all these fancy things
- 22:15in high school at my honors classes or
- 22:17whatever.
- 22:18But I was just moved by the simplicity
- 22:19of Mr. Dunham's faith that he was like,
- 22:22I'm trying to solve a mechanical problem on
- 22:24a bus and duh, I should pray about
- 22:26it.
- 22:27And just realizing like, oh, he has internalized
- 22:30the presence of Jesus in such a routine
- 22:33way that he gets frustrated with himself when
- 22:35he forgets to pray about solving a mechanical
- 22:37problem.
- 22:38And that just to me became like a
- 22:40vision for my life.
- 22:41Like I want to be that kind of
- 22:42person.
- 22:42I want to be the kind of person
- 22:43where when I've got the wrench in my
- 22:45hand and I can't figure it out, I'm
- 22:47praying because I know that Jesus is with
- 22:49me because I know that I have the
- 22:50mind of Christ.
- 22:51So I want to encourage you to be
- 22:52like Mr. Dunham to remember Jesus is with
- 22:55you in the problems that you're facing.
- 22:57He is with you to help you get
- 22:59through the pain to the pleasure to the
- 23:01glory with him.
- 23:06Lord Jesus, thank you that it is your
- 23:08glory to conceal things, but it's the glory
- 23:10of Kings to seek things out that you
- 23:13give us a role to play in this
- 23:15hide and seek a game of discovery and
- 23:17thought and rationality and it's beautiful and we
- 23:20just ask that you would help us to
- 23:21step into it that we wouldn't see thinking
- 23:23as something unspiritual or secular, but that we
- 23:28would see it as a place where your
- 23:29mind and ours come together, where we receive
- 23:32your mind.
- 23:33Lord Jesus, do your work in us as
- 23:35we do our work with you.
- 23:37Amen.
- 23:42Thanks for listening.
