- 0:07A very wonderful rendition of the national anthems of the United States and Canada.
- 0:13And certainly something to hear as Montrealers, Canadians here, all join in the singing of our national anthem in both French and English, led by Miss Suzanne LaPointe out in Center Field.
- 0:26A truly memorable moment here at Jerry Park this afternoon.
- 0:30Now let's go with the starting lineup for this afternoon's first game.
- 0:34For the visitors, the Houston Astros, only two and a half games out of first place.
- 0:39The leadoff man this afternoon making his first appearance here in Montreal in this series, left fielder Sandy Valdespino.
- 0:46Sandy Valdespino in left field.
- 0:49Bouting number two for Houston and playing second base, Joe Morgan. Bouting third for the Astros, a very dangerous Jimmy Wynn.
- 0:57Jimmy Wynn in center field.
- 0:59The clean-up man, shortstop Dennis Menke. That's Menke at shortstop in the clean-up position.
- 1:06Kurt Bluffery, who hammered out those two two-run Hummers against the Expo's in the opening game of this series Friday night, will be batting fifth and playing first base.
- 1:15Kurt Bluffery, Norm Miller in right field.
- 1:20Follows Bluffery in the order, batting seventh. That's Norm Miller, the right fielder, batting seventh.
- 1:26Or rather sixth. Seventh in the order is the catcher, John Edwards.
- 1:30Edwards the catcher, seventh. Orlando Martinez. Orlando Martinez will be playing third base in place of Doug Rader in this first game this afternoon.
- 1:40Martinez will be batting eighth.
- 1:42The pitcher, John Wilson, will be batting ninth.
- 1:45Here is the starting lineup for the month we all expose.
- 1:48A few changes. Ty Klein is at first base leading off for the Expos this afternoon.

- 2:58Ed Vargo at first base, John Skibler at second, and Andy Olsen at third base.
- 3:07As we all sadly know right now, the Astros have grabbed a two to nothing lead in this series.
- 3:13They beat the Expos five to three Friday night using the home run ball to great advantage,
- 3:19and they defeated the Expos five to three yesterday afternoon.
- 3:23The Expos out-homer the Astros yesterday as Ron Fairley and Rusty Stobb hit for the second,
- 3:29but unfortunately the Astros won the ball game five to three.
- 3:34The Astros are on a seven game winning streak, and they are aiming for eight straight in this first game this afternoon.
- 3:41The Expos have lost their last six games, so they're aiming to break out of this current slump here at Jarrett Park this afternoon.
- 3:50Stoneman is completing his pregame warm-up pitches and will be set to go in just a few moments' time.
- 3:57A point brought out by John Robertson of the Star, and something that we can reflect upon.
- 4:02Sure the Expos are in last place in the Eastern Division of the National League,
- 4:06but folks, it wasn't too long ago when clubs like the New York Mets and the Houston Astros were at the bottom of the heap.
- 4:13These two expansion clubs very much in the running for their division titles,
- 4:18but they're still in the Eastern Division and the Astros only two and a half games out of first place in the Western Division of the National League.
- 4:26As we have said many times in the past, and we'll say it again, there's only one way for the Expos to go, and that's up the ladder.
- 4:33It may not happen this year, but there's always next year, and this team will always provide you with plenty of frills.
- 4:40This is a ball club with plenty of style, win or lose.
- 4:44All right, so we're all set now for the start of this afternoon's ball game.
- 4:48Stalman is just about finished with his pregame warm-up pitches.
- 4:52He is whipping the ball around the infield.
- 4:54So right now I'll whip the microphone over to Dave Van Horn.
- 4:57Thank you very much, Russ, and good afternoon once again, everybody.
- 5:00Kevin Collins at third, Bobby Wyatt at short, Gary Sutherland back at second base.
- 5:04Good to see Gary back in action.
- 5:06Di Clyde, the first baseman.
- 5:08John Bateman's behind the plate.
- 5:10Mac Jones in left, Ron Fairley in center, Rusty Stab in right.
- 5:14And here's Sandy Valdespino, the leadoff batter for the Houston Astros.
- 5:18Sandy Valdespino acquired by Houston in the deal with the Atlanta Braves.
- 5:22Valdespino had been at Atlanta's AAA Farm Club and the International League at Richmond, Virginia.
- 5:28Here's the pitch to Valdespino.
- 5:30First one is high, ball one.
- 5:32The game is underway.
- 5:33Valdespino, a left-hand hitter.
- 5:36He's batting 286.
- 5:38He's played in 29 games in an Astros uniform, 24 for 85 at the plate.
- 5:43The 1-0 pitch, high.
- 5:45Ball two, two and nothing.
- 5:48John Bateman catching his first game.
- 5:50Ron Brand will see action in the second game.
- 5:53Ron's been going very strong, has needed some rest.
- 5:55Here's the 2-0 pitch.
- 5:56In there for the strike.
- 5:58John Valdespino, two and one.
- 6:02The left side of the outfield, shallow.
- 6:04We say the left side because Ron Fairley's pulled around in left center.
- 6:07Backjump straight away in left field, not too deep.
- 6:09Strike two to Valdespino.
- 6:11Evens the count of two balls and two strikes.
- 6:14Solly Parker coaching at third base.
- 6:16Mel McGahey at first base.
- 6:18For Houston, here's the 2-2 pitch.
- 6:20Clayton in a miss.
- 6:21He struck him out.
- 6:23Valdespino is out of there.
- 6:27One down.
- 6:28The batter will be Joe Morgan, the Houston second baseman.
- 6:32Morgan's batting, 2-48.
- 6:34The second baseman, number 18, Joe Morgan.
- 6:38One out.
- 6:39There's nobody on.
- 6:41Morgan's a left-hand hitter.
- 6:46There's the pitch.
- 6:47Taking high.
- 6:53Ball one.
- 6:59Stoney, ready for the 1-0 pitch.
- 7:01Here it comes.
- 7:04And it's missing the target.
- 7:08Ball two.
- 7:10Two balls, no strikes.
- 7:15Stoney delivers the 2-0 pitch.
- 7:17This one missed the inside corner.
- 7:19Ball three.
- 7:20Three and nothing to Morgan.
- 7:21He got behind on Valdespino, came back and struck him out.
- 7:25And we'll see if he can come back on Morgan.
- 7:27Jimmy Wynn is on deck.
- 7:31Stoney delivers.
- 7:33It's low and away.
- 7:35Morgan draws a walk.
- 7:39So if one out, there's a runner on.
- 7:41And the batter will be Jim Wynn.
- 7:48Gary Southerland, the second baseman.
- 7:50Wynn being a right-hand hitter.
- 7:52Gary has signaled to Bill Stoney.
- 7:54He'll be the one.
- 7:55If the ball comes back to Stoney, Gary will be the one that
- 7:57Stoney will want to throw that ball to for the double play.
- 8:00Bobby Wynn way over in the hole on the left side of the infield.
- 8:05So they've over-shifted to the left.
- 8:09Stoney gets the belt.
- 8:10Takes a look at Morgan.
- 8:13A long look.
- 8:14The pitch to Wynn.
- 8:15Taken low and away.
- 8:16Ball one.
- 8:18We mentioned yesterday Morgan has exceptionally good speed.
- 8:21He's stolen 24 bases.
- 8:26So we're looking at speed right now with Morgan and Wynn,
- 8:29the two fastest men on the Astros team.
- 8:32Morgan with 24 stolen bases.
- 8:34Jimmy Wynn, the batter, he's stolen 18 times successfully this year.
- 8:39One-to-nothing to count.
- 8:41Morgan takes his lead and moved to first base.
- 8:43Morgan gets back in time.
- 8:47Little bit of a breeze from left to right.
- 8:51And a bright, sunny, beautiful day here in Canada.
- 9:00Stoneman looks at his runner again.
- 9:04The pitch.
- 9:05Taken for a strike.
- 9:07One ball, one strike to Jimmy Wynn.
- 9:12Right hand hitter batting 277.
- 9:15Wynn's hit 25 home runs and 66 RBI's.
- 9:19Hit one here the other night.
- 9:27Little guy with a lot of power.
- 9:29Low one-one.
- 9:30Cut on.
- 9:31Bounce left side.
- 9:32Foul.
- 9:33Into the coaching box.
- 9:34Third baseman Kevin Collins up with it.
- 9:36Coco Laboy getting a rest.
- 9:42One ball, two strikes.
- 9:43The count on Jimmy Wynn with one out here in the first inning.
- 9:47Morgan the runner.
- 9:49Houston twice this year has won 10 games straight.
- 9:56They've won eight straight coming into this one.
- 9:59They're going for their eighth straight.
- 10:01Here's the one-two pitch.
- 10:03Cut on.
- 10:04Line drive.
- 10:05Moving over toward right center.
- 10:06It drops in.
- 10:07There could be for extra bases.
- 10:08Barely up with the ball.
- 10:09He's going to throw to second but in with a stand-up double.
- 10:12And the runner holding at third base is Morgan.
- 10:16That's a double for Wynn.
- 10:19Into the right center power alley.
- 10:22The outfield was a round to the left for him so Ron Barely had to cut all the way across center field to get over there to get that ball.
- 10:31Morgan moves to third base.
- 10:34First hit of the game.
- 10:36And out with one out.
- 10:37The Astros have got runners at second and third and here's the clean-up batter Dennis Menke.
- 10:42Menke is batting 291.
- 10:46He has more hits than any other Houston player.
- 10:49105 hits.
- 10:52361 at bat.
- 11:01He's the leading hitter of the regulars.
- 11:10Stoneman getting the sign from John Bateman.
- 11:14Here's the pitch.
- 11:15Swing on and miss.
- 11:16Strike one.
- 11:24This is the last time the Astros will be here at Jerry Park this year.
- 11:28We'll be in Houston next weekend to wrap up our play with the Astros for the season.
- 11:36Here's the 0-1 pitch.
- 11:38High and outside a ball.
- 11:39One ball, one strike to Dennis Menke.
- 11:42The Atlanta Braves move in here tomorrow and left-hander George Stone will be on the mound tomorrow night.
- 11:56Jerry Robertson will be on the hill for the Expos.
- 11:59The 1-1 to Menke.
- 12:00Broke across the letters on the inside corner of strike.
- 12:04A hard curve that really fooled Menke because he spun and ducked out of the way of that pitch.
- 12:12One ball, two strikes.
- 12:21Here's the wind-up in the pitch.
- 12:23Check swing. It's down low.
- 12:26Ball two.
- 12:27Count is even now to Menke.
- 12:28Two balls, two strikes.
- 12:36Mac Jones straight away and left for Menke.
- 12:38Fairly a few steps into left center.
- 12:44Morgan, the runner at third, wind at second.
- 12:47One out.
- 12:48Here's the 2-2 to Menke.
- 12:51Swing and a miss. Strike three.
- 12:53The bats sailed off to the right side.
- 12:56John Baben hung on.
- 12:59Second strikeout for Bill Stoneman.
- 13:01That's two away and a big out to get Menke there.
- 13:03Fly ball could have scored a runner.
- 13:06But Stoney got him.
- 13:07Now Kurt Bleffrey will be the batter with two outs.
- 13:12Bleffrey is hitting 268.
- 13:14He's a left-hand hitter.
- 13:16He's had a couple of home runs in this series.
- 13:19And he's hitting the ball well.
- 13:22Tripled yesterday to drive in two runs in the first inning
- 13:25on a high fly ball to right center.
- 13:30California beat Washington 11-8.
- 13:33So there's two away now.
- 13:35The right side of the infield has moved back.
- 13:37Sutherland on the edge of the grass.
- 13:39The pitch to Bleffrey on the letters inside.
- 13:41Ball one.
- 13:54Here's Stoneman's 1-0.
- 13:56Bleffrey swings.
- 13:57Fly ball.
- 13:58Right center.
- 13:59Staub going back.
- 14:00Fairly is back.
- 14:01And it is Staub at the fence.
- 14:04Same spot he hit it yesterday.
- 14:08The same play that Rusty Staub had to make yesterday.
- 14:13And missed the ball.
- 14:14He made it today.
- 14:15Made the catch.
- 14:16Bleffrey is out.
- 14:18And the Astros are through in the first.
- 14:21No runs.
- 14:22One hit.
- 14:23No errors.
- 14:24Two left.
- 14:25Score.
- 14:26Houston nothing.
- 14:27The Expos coming to bat.
- 14:29Well-fed Rusty Staub.
- 14:31Receives a tremendous ovation.
- 14:33Listen.
- 14:35A big ovation for Rusty Staub who had a run exactly as yesterday afternoon when he misjudged
- 14:42that ball.
- 14:43Couldn't get to it.
- 14:44And it fell in for a double scoring a pair of runs.
- 14:47This time at the risk of a collision with Ron Fairly.
- 14:50Staub ran along the warning track.
- 14:52Along that right field fence toward right center.
- 14:55And just overhanded the ball just so beautifully and pulled it down.
- 14:59And what a catch by LeGon.
- 15:01Hold on.
- 15:02That one got away. Two runs would have scored for sure.
- 15:05And the Houston Astros would have had a two to nothing lead.
- 15:09Well this is the kind of excitement you'll hear, you'll see at Jerry Park all season long.
- 15:14And of course you'll hear on the Expo baseball network as the Expos come up, continue to
- 15:18come up with a great play and also some great hitting as well.
- 15:22So let's hope for Expo fans anyway that this afternoon will be an afternoon when everyone
- 15:27will be able to rejoin.
- 15:29Our great catch by Rusty Staub really gets Bill Staubman out of trouble in the top half
- 15:36of the first inning.
- 15:37No score.
- 15:38The first man up for the Expos will be Ty Klein to be followed by Gary Sutherland.
- 15:43It's Ty, Sutherland and Staub to start off with in the bottom of the first.
- 15:50Al Ty Klein, a left hand hitter.
- 15:53Batting 263. Don Wilson on the mound for Houston.
- 16:02Klein swings, lines the first one foul out of play down to the left.
- 16:07Strike one.
- 16:14Wilson's having another fine year.
- 16:1712-7 has a 3.87 ERA, he's got nine complete games.
- 16:23Leads the staff in strikeouts with 165 for 155 and two-thirds innings.
- 16:30Gets a strike on the first one to Ty Klein which was fouled to the left.
- 16:35Next one misses for a ball so the count is even.
- 16:37One ball, one strike.
- 16:41Wilson delivers.
- 16:42Breaking ball is high.
- 16:44Two and one.
- 16:50340 down the right field line, 340 down the left field line.
- 16:56Here's the 2-1 pitch.
- 16:58It's high and in, ball three.
- 17:01Three balls, one strike to Ty Klein.
- 17:04Gary Sutherland on deck.
- 17:16Here's the 3-1 pitch.
- 17:18Taken for strike two called.
- 17:20The inside corner about letter high.
- 17:28Full count now to Ty.
- 17:30Wilson delivers.
- 17:32Strike three called.
- 17:34Got a slider on the outside corner.
- 17:37So Ty Klein is called out on strikes.
- 17:41Strikeout for Don Wilson.
- 17:43The batter with one out and nobody on.
- 17:45Gary Sutherland.
- 17:47Gary back in action now batting 233.
- 17:53Coming off the 21-day disabled list.
- 17:5721-day disabled list.
- 18:02The pitch to Gary.
- 18:03Taken for a strike.
- 18:060-1.
- 18:11Wilson's really a class pitcher.
- 18:15The pitch cut on and this is a base hit out into left field.
- 18:20Gary Sutherland on with a base hit and his first time at the plate after that entry at Shea Stadium in New York.
- 18:27So Gary's on with one out and the batter will be Rusty Stobb.
- 18:32Teams are even now in hits.
- 18:35We're in the bottom of the first. No score.
- 18:41Stobb batting 291.
- 18:44Has 17 home runs and 50 RBIs.
- 18:47He's two home runs behind Mack Jones and 10 RBIs behind Mack.
- 18:55Here's the pitch to Rusty.
- 18:57Foul back out of play to the left.
- 19:02Nothing and one.
- 19:09The league leader in home runs, Willie McCovey with 33.
- 19:13Lee May of Cincinnati has 29.
- 19:15Hank Garrett of the Atlanta Braves is third with 28.
- 19:18Of course he'll be here tomorrow night with all the other Atlanta Braves.
- 19:21Here's the pitch to Rusty. A called strike.
- 19:240-2.
- 19:28Climb the runner at first.
- 19:35The RBI leader in the national league is Ron Sano of Chicago. He's got 92.
- 19:41The 0-2 pitch to Stobb is high for ball one.
- 19:46One ball, two strikes.
- 19:48Mack Jones is on deck.
- 19:58Wilson getting aside from the catcher John Edwards.
- 20:01Here's the 1-2 pitch to Rusty. Missed the outside corner.
- 20:04Count is even. Two balls, two strikes.
- 20:07Wilson is 1-0 against our ball club this year.
- 20:11He beat us 7-4 on May 22nd at the Astrodome.
- 20:15Fred Gladding came on to get a save in the night.
- 20:18Wilson went 8-2 innings.
- 20:21There goes Sutherland.
- 20:23The pitch is down low. Sutherland slides. He makes it to second.
- 20:28Gary Sutherland gets in there under the throw.
- 20:32We get a full count on Stobb at 3-2 and Sutherland gets the stolen base.
- 20:39For Gary, his second of the year.
- 20:48So it's 3-2 now on Stobb.
- 20:51Here comes the pitch.
- 20:54Check swinging a foul tip.
- 20:56I thought it was foul tip. It wasn't. It was high and inside.
- 20:59Got away from Edwards. Sutherland goes to third and Stobb goes to first on a walk.
- 21:04It was not foul tip. They've all just got away from Edwards.
- 21:14Stobb is on first on the walk.
- 21:19He said wild pitch. So it's a wild pitch to move Sutherland to third.
- 21:24Mack Jones the batter with one out and runners at first and third. No score in the game.
- 21:30Rusty started to go after that ball but then let it go.
- 21:34Let's take 10 seconds for station identification on the Expos baseball radio network.
- 21:39First pitch to Mack. Right under his shit inside.
- 21:44Back down to there. Ball one.
- 21:47Mack hitting 287.
- 21:5019 home runs, 60 RBIs.
- 21:53What a spot for Mack here to get a big hit in.
- 21:56Only one out and runners at first and third. Sutherland the runner at third.
- 22:00Wilson at the belt. Deals to Mack. He swings and misses. Strike one.
- 22:04One ball, one strike.
- 22:17Wilson again checking the runners. The 1-1 to Mack Jones is high. Ball two.
- 22:22Two and one.
- 22:25Sutherland got on with a base hit, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch when Stobb walked.
- 22:36Wilson kicks and fires the 2-1 pitch. Mack goes after it. Misses everything.
- 22:41Count is even at two and two.
- 22:44Al Barlich calling the balls and strikes.
- 22:49Ed Vargo at first, John Kibler at second, Andy Olson at third.
- 22:57Wilson set for the 2-2 pitch to Mack. Here comes. He struck him out.
- 23:01Mack goes down swinging. Strikeout number two for Wilson.
- 23:06Two away and it'll be up to Ron Fairley.
- 23:10Ron is batting 3-0-6. He's got 22 hits and 72 trips to the plate.
- 23:19His third Montreal home run here yesterday has 14 RBIs.
- 23:24Obtained from the Los Angeles Dodgers. Ron Fairley.
- 23:29Wilson pitches. Cut on. Bounce to the right side. Stop by the first baseman, Blefary.
- 23:34Clips to Wilson covering and Fairley is out. The side is retired.
- 23:40So, no runs. One hit, no errors and two were left.
- 23:45The score at the end of an inning here. The Astros nothing at our end.
- 23:50The 1-1 to Mack Jones.
- 23:53Two were left. The score at the end of an inning here. The Astros nothing at our end.
- 23:59The Cincinnati Redlegs score the run in the top half of the first inning.
- 24:04They're leading the Phillies 1-0. That game now in the bottom half of the first.
- 24:08Other acts in the National League this afternoon. We'll see Los Angeles at St. Louis.
- 24:13San Diego at Chicago. Atlanta at New York. And San Francisco at Pittsburgh.
- 24:19The standings in the National League so far show of course the Cubs with their 6.5 game lead over New York.
- 24:28And they lead St. Louis by 8.5 games.
- 24:31Pittsburgh 11 games out. Philadelphia 21.5. And the X-Four 32.
- 24:37In the Western Division, Atlanta has a one game lead over Cincinnati and San Francisco.
- 24:42The Dodgers are two games out. And the Houston Astros are two and a half games out.
- 24:47Then the San Diego Padres, the expansion is plopped. 25 and a half games out of first place.
- 24:53So those are the standings in the Eastern and Western Division of the National League.
- 24:58We'll be keeping up to date on all the scores throughout the afternoon.
- 25:02Well, those scores, we go to the top half of the second inning in this first game here at Jerry Park
- 25:07between the Houston Astros and the Montreal Expos.
- 25:10Both Bill Stoneman and Don Wilson have struck out a pair of batters.
- 25:15Stoneman got to the top of the first. Wilson struck out a pair of Expos in the bottom half of the first inning.
- 25:21Wilson is really humming that fastball of his. Boy, it's really zipping in there.
- 25:26Big Mac Jones had plenty of trouble trying to make contact with Wilson's fastball in the bottom half of the first inning.
- 25:33So for the Astros, in the top of the second, it'll be Norm Miller, John Edwards, and Orlando Martinez.
- 25:40Norm Miller is the left-hand hitter. He's batting 274.
- 25:53Stobbs playing him deep in right, barely a couple of steps into right center.
- 25:57And the right side of the infield, of course, plays back for this left-hand hitter.
- 26:01Bill Stoneman delivers, pitches low and inside, ball one.
- 26:05Miller, Edwards, and Martinez.
- 26:08No score here in the top of the second.
- 26:12First game of the doubleheader this afternoon.
- 26:16The 1-0 pitch is low, ball two, 2-0.
- 26:22Larry Dierker will go in the second game for Houston. Howie Reed for the Expos.
- 26:32The 2-0. Cut on. Line drive, single out in the left field.
- 26:38Mac Jones up with the ball. Miller will hold at first base, second hit for Houston.
- 26:45Oh, with Miller at first, John Edwards will step up to the plate. There's nobody out.
- 26:55The Astros got runners at first and third with only one out in the first inning.
- 27:00Stoneman retired Menke and Bluffery to get out of the jam.
- 27:08Edwards was about ready to go, and then he stepped out and went back for the pine tire cloth
- 27:13to rub that bat handle down a bit.
- 27:20Edwards also a left-hand hitter.
- 27:26Stoney looking to Bateman for the side.
- 27:29Throw to first base, getting back safely is Miller. Edwards batting 2-39.
- 27:43Stoney looks to the runner, the pitch foul way back to our left. Out of play, 0-1-1.
- 27:57Edwards for a long time was the Cincinnati catcher, and they felt a year ago,
- 28:05two seasons ago now, that he was expendable when a young rookie by the name of Johnny Bench
- 28:11came up swinging and a miss by Edwards, 0-1-2.
- 28:22And Edwards had done quite a job for him. We mentioned that in 63 and 64 he was the
- 28:27Golden Glove catcher in the National League.
- 28:32The runner at first, Norm Miller, infield to double play depth.
- 28:44Stoneman at the belt. Here's the pitch, high and inside.
- 28:52A ball and two strikes. Bateman going out to talk to Bill Stoneman.
- 29:03That conference did not last long.
- 29:06Might have been just long enough for John to tell Stoney what he'd like to see thrown
- 29:12in there to John Edwards.
- 29:19Here's the 1-2 pitch. Looked out, throw to first base, Miller's back in time.
- 29:24That almost got a piece of Edwards.
- 29:28He got out of there in time. Two balls, two strikes.
- 29:34Marty Martinez is on deck.
- 29:41Here's the runner with nobody out. There he goes.
- 29:44Swung on and missed. Bateman throws the tag.
- 29:47They got him.
- 29:53Miller is out, attempting to steal. Bateman to wide.
- 29:58Edwards goes down swinging on the pitch.
- 30:05So that twin killing makes it two outs, nobody on.
- 30:12Third strikeout for Bill Stoneman.
- 30:15Here's Marty Martinez, another left hand hitter.
- 30:18Martinez batting 294. He's played in 41 games, has only 109 at bats.
- 30:25The pitch outside, ball one.
- 30:35Third baseman, Kevin Collins in on the grass.
- 30:38The pitch is high, ball two, two and nothing.
- 30:43Left fielder, Mack Jones. Center fielder, Ron Fairley playing in, stops straight away and right.
- 30:51The sun ducks behind clouds from time to time. Here's a two-nothing pitch.
- 30:56Foul, way down to the left out of play. Two and one to Martinez.
- 31:03And the field for a moment or two will be in shadows and then of course in bright sunshine.
- 31:13Stoney deals a two-one. This is sliced foul, back out of play to our left again.
- 31:20And the count is two balls and two strikes.
- 31:24Dave, a fan caught that ball in his hand and it bounced right out.
- 31:28He thought he had it in his hand with no ball. Had to look behind him.
- 31:34The two-two pitch. This one's fouled back into the screen behind the plate.
- 31:47Now the Deuces are up on the scoreboard. Two balls, two strikes, two outs.
- 31:52And we're in the second. Here's the pitch.
- 31:55Bounded at the left side. Wine has got it. Throw to Klein. That's all for the Astros.
- 32:03They're down one, two, three. No runs, one hit. No errors, nobody left.
- 32:08The score at the end of one and a half. Montreal nothing, Houston nothing.
- 32:13Well fans, it wasn't too long ago, and as a matter of fact it's still happening right now in sports,
- 32:18or you have to get in long queues at the ballpark to buy your ticket.
- 32:22Or if you're calling the ballpark or any sports organization, be it football, hockey or baseball,
- 32:29that you've got to wait for the telephone call to be completed by a busy switchboard.
- 32:34Well you know, the Expo's have joined this TRS system, the ticket reservation system,
- 32:39that we've talked about so often on these baseball broadcasts.
- 32:43Through TRS, it's a computerized setup. The machines are located throughout the island of Montreal
- 32:49and down in the United States, in Burlington, Vermont, in Plattsburgh, New York, in Sherbrooke, Quebec,
- 32:54up in the Ottawa Valley at the Miracle Mart stores.
- 32:57And through TRS you don't have to worry about getting the ballpark in time to buy tickets for the game.
- 33:03You don't have to worry about phoning anybody. You just go right to the TRS center
- 33:07and they'll punch out your ticket right on the spot and you'll get the best available seat for that price.
- 33:13Well fans, don't forget that you can purchase all your tickets through the TRS outlets in your area.
- 33:20Now in Montreal, we'd like to remind folks living in the financial district,
- 33:25or I should say working in the financial district down around St. James Street,
- 33:28that there's a TRS location in the restaurant in the Class Victoria, the Stock Exchange Tower.
- 33:34It's called La Vieux Port. You'll find a TRS machine there.
- 33:38TRS conveniently located at Stimson Stores downtown around the lakeshore.
- 33:42And also you'll find a TRS machine in Place de Marie, the Dominion Square Building,
- 33:47and all the Miracle Mart stores in Montreal.
- 33:53Now, at the bottom of the second, Kevin Collins, John Bateman, Bobby Wine.
- 33:57First pitch to Kevin is high, ball one.
- 34:06Kevin's a left-hand hitter, batting 220.
- 34:10Look for the strike.
- 34:14One ball, one strike.
- 34:22Wilson delivers a curve that's swung on.
- 34:24First ball hit out forward, right center. It's going to drop in for a base hit.
- 34:27Collins is on.
- 34:30Second hit off, Wilson.
- 34:32That'll bring the catcher, John Bateman, to the plate.
- 34:37And Kevin Collins, runner at first.
- 34:42Bateman.
- 34:53Kevin's a New Englander. He's from Springfield, Massachusetts.
- 34:58Here's big John Bateman, batting 199.
- 35:03Collins takes his lead. Bateman swings for the fence and misses.
- 35:072-1 to John.
- 35:16No score here.
- 35:22Wilson at the belt, checks Collins.
- 35:24The pitch to John is high and inside for a ball. One ball, one strike.
- 35:29John's from Killeen, Texas.
- 35:39A hunter and a fisherman in the offseason.
- 35:43Here's the 1-1 to John. Cut on bounce tie.
- 35:46Wilson has it, throws to second. There's nobody there. It goes out into center field.
- 35:50Collins goes to third. Bateman's on.
- 35:54Well, the mix-up in signals between Morgan and Menke. It looked like Menke was going to be the backup man, and Morgan didn't get over there.
- 36:03Bateman on on the fielder's choice.
- 36:08And we'll have to see who the scorer charges the error to. Menke.
- 36:15Right now it's Menke. Now that is subject to change.
- 36:22Batting 8, the shortstop.
- 36:27Number 7, Bobby Wines.
- 36:30In this instance it looked to me like Menke was the backup man, because Menke was not going to the bag.
- 36:36He was going behind the bag, and I think maybe Morgan was the man that should have been there, but he wasn't.
- 36:42Wilson delivers out of Bobby Wide, and Bobby fouls the first pitch high and out of play to the right.
- 36:52Wine batting, 194.
- 37:05Collins at third base. Bateman at first base.
- 37:08Nobody out, the 0-1 to Wine. Fouls sharply, way off to the right out of play.
- 37:17Nothing in 2 to Bobby.
- 37:20A pitcher, Bill Stoneman, is on deck.
- 37:32Wilson deals high and inside, gets back to the backstop. Here comes Collins, he scores!
- 37:41Bateman goes to second, a wild pitch.
- 37:46Second wild pitch uncorked by Don Wilson.
- 37:49It decks Bobby Wide, and Collins raced home to score the Expos lead 1-0.
- 37:581-2, the count on Bobby Wide. Avoided Bobby had to get out of the way.
- 38:08Donald Edward Wilson has uncorked a couple of pitches here, this one cost him.
- 38:17The 1-2 to Wine. Swung on and missed, strike three, and Bobby is upset. He went after a high outside pitch.
- 38:25He took a sweep at it and missed.
- 38:30That's the third strikeout for Don Wilson.
- 38:36I think we're going to get a change in that score.
- 38:40Bill Stoneman, right hand hitter.
- 38:47Twangs and misses the first pitch. That error has been charged to Morgan, the second baseman.
- 38:56So if you're scoring along with us, error on the second baseman in this inning.
- 39:02The 0-1 to Sony, outside, one ball, one strike.
- 39:18Here's the pitch, swung on and missed for strike two.
- 39:24As Wilson's been something else, he's tied several major league records, most strikeouts for a nine inning game. He struck out 18 on July 14th of 1968.
- 39:35Struck out 18, that was in a night game.
- 39:40Swing and a miss, strike three. That's all for Bill Stoneman.
- 39:46Fourth strikeout for Don Wilson, two outs, Bateman's the runner at second, and the batter will be Ty Clive.
- 39:53And what do you think the major league record is for the most consecutive strikeouts in a game?
- 40:05Oh, Wilson's tied it.
- 40:09Clive's a left hand hitter, called out on strikes in the first inning. Checked his swing on the first one, ball one.
- 40:16It's eight.
- 40:27Bateman leading from second, the pitch to Clive, swung on, this ball hit high out of the air, left center, racing over is Jimmy Winn.
- 40:33He gets there to make the catch, and that's it for Ty Clive.
- 40:38Winn, with a good burst of speed, got to that ball that was dropping fast.
- 40:42But here in the second, the Expos come up with a run on one hit. There's one error in the field, that run is unearned.
- 40:49There was one man left on base. The score at the end of two, the Expos won, the Astros nothing.
- 40:56The Phillies scored three runs in the bottom half of the first inning.
- 41:00Cincinnati had a run on the first and a run on the top of the second, so the score is three to two, Philadelphia over Cincinnati, in the bottom half of the second.
- 41:07Pass well as going against champions in that ball game. The Giants are leading the Pirates one to nothing at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh in the bottom of the second.
- 41:15Gaylor Terry against Doc Ellis.
- 41:17Atlantis at New York, that important ball game, has Milton Hampus on the hill for the Braves and Gary Gendry for the Mets.
- 41:25San Diego at Chicago, the Padres attending Joe Nicrow, Phil's brother, against Nick Delma.
- 41:31And Los Angeles at St. Louis, Chuck Taylor pitching for St. Louis, the lefty, Claude Osteen, on the hill for Los Angeles.
- 41:39Games in the American League, volleyball at Minnesota, Chicago at Detroit, Cleveland at Kansas City, Boston two games at Oakland,
- 41:46Washington at California, and New York at Seattle. And we haven't received any reports on those ball games yet, still early in the afternoon.
- 41:57While the Expo's are leading the Houston Astros one to nothing, as we go now to the top half of the third inning.
- 42:05And for Houston, we'll be looking at pitcher Don Wilson on the top of the order, Sandy Velvets and Finoff, and Joe Morgan.
- 42:12Today I'd like to remind fans once again that it's camera night here at Jerry Clark. Tomorrow night between 7 and 7.30.
- 42:24All fans with cameras will be allowed on the field to photograph their favorite Expo ball players.
- 42:30There'll be loads of fun for the youngsters, for all the camera bugs. The older people do.
- 42:35A lot of older people, of course, are camera bugs as well, and sports fans. So what a party they should have tomorrow night with their cameras.
- 42:43At 7 to 7.30, they'll be allowed on the field. Ball game starts at 8.05.
- 42:48Okay, Don Wilson, the Houston pitcher, will be the first man up here.
- 42:55Wilson's batting 145. He's got 8 hits and 55 trips to the plate. Swings and chops a foul into the Expo.
- 43:02Stug out to the left, strike one. Bill Stulman, right-hander on the mound for the Expo.
- 43:140-1 pitch. Fouled way out to the right out of play.
- 43:21You know what Wilson does in his spare time? He's your friendly neighborhood little old cabinet maker.
- 43:32Quite a woodworker. They could use him up in Ottawa.
- 43:35Here's the 0-2 pitch. Swing and a miss. He's out of there.
- 43:42He tried to hold up and went around on it and struck out. Fourth strikeout for Stoney.
- 43:48Here's Sandy Valdezpino, who was his first victim in the first inning.
- 43:53Sandy Valdezpino. He's been around batting 286.
- 44:04He swings and misses Stoney's first pitch. Valdezpino, little guy, bats left, has strong arms and shoulders.
- 44:14When he's going well, he can give the ball a pretty good rip.
- 44:17But his problem, last couple of years, Benny hasn't been going well.
- 44:21Count evens it one ball and one strike.
- 44:30Stoneman's 1-1. Valdezpino gets out of the way. It's low and inside.
- 44:46The pitch, cut on. Fly ball down the left field line. Mac Jones coming over. He's got it.
- 44:53It's in foul territory. That's two away.
- 45:03You're right. I was about to say I don't think anybody can make a play on it.
- 45:07But that ball held up a little longer than I thought it was going to, and Mac got over there to make the catch.
- 45:12So there's two outs, and Joe Morgan, the second baseman, comes to the plate.
- 45:15He's batting 248, walked the first time up.
- 45:20Exposed leading 1-0 here in the top of the third. Morgan swings on the first pitch.
- 45:24Line drive, right field stop coming in, can't get to it.
- 45:27On one hop, Rusty's got it, rifles it into second to Bobby Wine, and holding up at first with a single is Joe Morgan.
- 45:34Third hit off Stoney.
- 45:38That'll bring Jim Wynn to the plate with two outs and Morgan on.
- 45:42Wynn doubled in the first inning.
- 45:57Morgan takes his lead.
- 46:08Bill Stoneman gives Morgan a long look and steps off the rubber.
- 46:24Stoney looking down again to John Bateman.
- 46:29A strike called on Wynn, 0-1.
- 46:39Stoney's big jam was the first inning when the Astros had runners at first and third with one out.
- 46:44He got out of that one.
- 46:47The pitch, strike two called. This is just above the knees, flip that inside corner.
- 46:52Nothing in two to Jim Wynn.
- 46:54He's talking to the plate on Byron Albarlick.
- 46:58Dave?
- 47:00Guess what the attendance here at Jerry Park is this afternoon.
- 47:03I say 23,202, and they haven't even announced it yet.
- 47:12There goes the runner. Bateman throws.
- 47:16The ball dropped.
- 47:18Safe at second is Morgan.
- 47:21Throw was just a little bit high. Sutherland tried to bring that club down just a fraction of an instant before he had control of the ball,
- 47:30and the ball dropped out of his glove as he was trying to put the tag on Morgan, but Morgan was in there with a stolen base.
- 47:40The ball has gone one and two to Wynn.
- 47:59Stoney gives a glance over his right shoulder now at the runner, Morgan at second.
- 48:05The one-two pitch to Jim Wynn.
- 48:08He's going away. Just missed that outside corner. Two balls, two strikes.
- 48:13I'm beginning to think you're counting the crowd, Dave.
- 48:18It'll take you a while.
- 48:21Oh, I don't know. I guess we've got 23, 24 here.
- 48:30It's a good crowd.
- 48:33Could be a lot more.
- 48:35Nice hit out into center field. Fairly coming up with that ball, and the runner Morgan's going to score. Fairly bobbled it, and going down to second is Wynn.
- 48:45There's an error on the center fielder.
- 48:48Ron Fairly to allow Wynn to go to second. He gets a base hit and an RBI to drive in Morgan to tie it up at one-one.
- 48:59So it's a new ball game again at one-to-one, and the batter will be Dennis Menke with two down. Wynn the runner at second. Menke struck out in the first inning.
- 49:18The pitch to Menke, and a strike called.
- 49:27There's a big out in the first inning when Stoney struck out Menke with runners at first and third. Now he's got Wynn at second base.
- 49:34The pitch cut on. Base hit up the middle out into center field. Wynn is going to score. Fairly up with the ball. Menke holds at first base. He's got an RBI single.
- 49:44Three hits now in this inning off Stoneman. Total of five for the Astros, and they've taken a two-to-one lead here with two outs.
- 49:55Two outs. Oh, the action coming with two outs here in the top of the third.
- 50:00Kurt Bleffrey.
- 50:03Kurt Bleffrey will be the batter. Bleffrey flied to right in the first inning.
- 50:26Runner leads. Stoneman's pitch, breaking ball, and a strike to Bleffrey. 0-1.
- 50:36Good breeze here is going left to right.
- 50:47Bounced foul behind the first base coaching box. Down right field foul territory. Bounced off the tarp all in there and out onto the field. So we've got a time out for a moment. Ten seconds for station identification.
- 51:01This is the Expo's baseball radio network.
- 51:04This is the home of Expo baseball in the capital district, WHRL in Albany, New York.
- 51:18We're in the top of the third with two outs. Houston leading two-to-one. Menke's the runner at first.
- 51:29Bleffrey the batter takes one high and outside for ball one. They count one ball, two strikes.
- 51:38Stoney retired the first two men he faced and then a single by Morgan, a single by Wynn, and a single by Menke producing a couple of runs.
- 51:56Here's the one-two to Bleffrey. Slow curve was outside. Ball two. Two balls and two strikes.
- 52:10The outfield is around to the right. They're playing deep for Bleffrey. Stob just a step off the warning track in right field.
- 52:21Menke the runner off first. The pitch by Stoney low and inside. Ball three.
- 52:28Stoneman has gone to a full count on Bleffrey. Three and two.
- 52:36Menke when he leaves off first base, just try to put a little move on just to throw Stoneman, try to throw Stoneman's timing off, bother him a little bit.
- 52:44When Menke takes his lead, he appears to be very still. When Stoneman gives him a good look, Menke will shift his hips or throw his head and shoulders to one side, give it a little fake.
- 52:57There goes the runner. Pitch is swung on. Line drive left field. Mack Jones under it. He's got it.
- 53:06Here in the third inning, Houston scores two runs on three hits. One error in the field. One man left on base. The score at the end of two and a half, Houston 2, Montreal 1.
- 53:19All right. Some scores starting to fill her in now from elsewhere in the National League. Los Angeles at St. Louis. There's Scurllis.
- 53:26Los Angeles and St. Louis scoreless top half of the second inning. San Diego at Chicago. Just getting underway. It's Joe Nicrow, by the way, for the Padres and Dick Selma for the Cubs.
- 53:36Atlanta and New York don't score top half of the second inning. Cincinnati and Philadelphia 4 to 2 for the Phillies over the Reds in the top of the third.
- 53:46The Giants and the Lions hit his 11th home run of the year with nobody on the second for Philadelphia. The Giants and the Pirates are tied up at one apiece in the bottom half of the third inning.
- 53:56Nothing yet on the American League games in that Baltimore Minnesota game. The two division leaders in the American League. It's Dave McNally for the Orioles and Jim Cox for the Minnesota Twins.
- 54:08That's the story on the out of town game so far. And of course we'll be keeping you up to date on all the scores throughout the afternoon here on the Expo Baseball Broadcast.
- 54:20While the Expo's are coming about in the bottom half of the third inning, the first man up for Montreal will be Gary Sutherland.
- 54:27And Suds Vaders return to the lineup with a single in his first appearance of the play, the singles out into the left field.
- 54:34Now here's Gary Sutherland in the bottom half of the third inning.
- 54:46Gary Sutherland right hand hitter. Thanks Wilson's first pitch low and in ball one.
- 54:58Don Wilson, the man for Houston, delivers the 1-0, swung on and this one's bounced backing up for it. Third baseman Martinez throw to first just in time to get Gary.
- 55:13One away. We mentioned that Wilson in 155 and two thirds inning has struck out 165. He's right up with the strikeout leaders in the National League.
- 55:28Men like Ferguson Jenkins of Chicago. Jenkins has locked close to 180 strikeouts. Bob Gibson of the Cardinals. Bill Singer of Los Angeles.
- 55:37As a matter of fact, Wilson's running a little bit ahead of Singer.
- 55:43Rusty Staub who walked in the first inning. First pitch was a strike, the 0-1. Down low. One ball, one strike to Rusty.
- 55:59Rusty is batting 291.
- 56:10The 1-1 pitch, swung on and fouled, bounced to the right side.
- 56:15Bounced up over the protective wall and padding and right under the front row of the box seats off the end of the Astros' dugout.
- 56:23On the right side. And a gentleman down there has got a souvenir.
- 56:30One and two to stop. Mack Jones on deck. Wilson deals. Rusty strikes out. Big man goes down swinging.
- 56:48That's five strikeouts now for Wilson.
- 56:59Mack Jones went down swinging in the first inning.
- 57:05First pitch to Mack is high, ball one.
- 57:14Rusty has only struck out 34 times this year and someone commented the other day, the 1-0 to Mack is low and inside, ball two.
- 57:23He commented that Rusty appeared to be striking out more often in the last two or three weeks.
- 57:33Well, he still hasn't struck out that often but of course he's been at the plate.
- 57:37Swing and a miss by Mack for strike one. He's been at the plate in situations where he has been swinging for the long ball and they are the occasions when you are more apt to strike out than you are when you're going for that base hit.
- 57:50If you don't get the base hit, you'll pop it up or ground out.
- 57:54When you swing for that long ball, of course you increase your chances of striking out.
- 57:58Here's the 2-1. Fouled back to the screen. Strike two. Two balls, two strikes.
- 58:05He has been swinging for the long ball more often than he was early in the season.
- 58:15Two outs, Mack at the plate.
- 58:19The 2-2 pitch taken down low.
- 58:22Ball three, a full count.
- 58:24Houston leading 2-1 here in the bottom of the third. First game of our doubleheader.
- 58:35Wilson fires a 3-2. It's slow ball four and Mack is on.
- 58:44Second walk given up by Wilson.
- 58:48And with two outs, Ron Fairley will come to the plate. Ron bounced out of the first baseman.
- 58:54Kurt Floppery in the first inning.
- 59:02Another left-hand hitter.
- 59:08Little lob over to first base to check back Jones.
- 59:17Russ, if you were the runner at first, you would have made it back safely.
- 59:21Oh, I think so.
- 59:26I'm not sure I would have, but I know you would have.
- 59:34Wilson's at the belt checking Mack Jones, the pitch to Fairley. Check swing and a ball.
- 59:53The second baseman, Morgan, is playing on the edge of the grass. Floppery holding the runner, Mack Jones, the pitch to Fairley.
- 1:00:00A strike call, one and one.
- 1:00:03Little break to that ball.
- 1:00:07Wilson's got normally very good control, good stuff on his pitches, and a variety of pitches.
- 1:00:21A check of the runner and the one-one pitch. Swing on.
- 1:00:25This is a base hit out in the right center. Mack Jones is on the go. He's running third, and he'll be hauled off at third base as Morgan recovers that ball.
- 1:00:35Ron Fairley, on a hit-and-run, drills a single to right center, moving Mack Jones to third base.
- 1:00:46And with two outs, the Expos threaten here in the third. The batter will be Kevin Collins.
- 1:00:56Kevin got a base hit to right in the second. He scored on a wild pitch by Wilson.
- 1:01:06So the Expos have got a chance to tie it up here with two outs in the third. That was the third hit off Wilson.
- 1:01:20The pitch to Kevin. Swung on and missed. Strike one.
- 1:01:31Mack Jones at third and Ron Fairley at first.
- 1:01:40Wilson deals, and Kevin swings and misses for strike two.
- 1:01:55The outfield plays Kevin deep and to the right.
- 1:02:05Wilson out in front. The O2 pitch is fouled back just to our right.
- 1:02:14The ball bounced up against the front of the press box.
- 1:02:19John Paul Sorowe got his fishnet out and went after it, but couldn't come up with it.
- 1:02:30Runners lead. The O2 pitch struck him out. Collins goes down swinging with two outs here. So that's it.
- 1:02:41No runs, one hit, no errors. There were two Expos left on base. At the end of three, it's Houston 2, Montreal 1.

- 1:03:56Here are the totals now at the end of three innings. Houston, two runs, five hits.
- 1:04:02They've committed one error and have left three men on.
- 1:04:07The Expos have one run on three hits, one error, and five base runners have been stranded.
- 1:04:15The scores, we go to the fourth, Houston, two, Montreal, one.
- 1:04:20And coming in now to tell you about the middle three innings of this ball game, Russ Taylor.
- 1:04:25Thanks very much, Dave. First man up for Houston in the top half of the fourth inning will be right fielder Norm Miller.
- 1:04:31It'll be Miller, Edwards, and Martinez for the Astros.
- 1:04:38Houston lead this ball game two to one. Expos took a one to nothing lead, bottom half of the second inning.
- 1:04:43The Astros came up with two runs in the top of the third.
- 1:04:46The first pitch to Miller is outside and low for ball one.
- 1:04:53Norm Miller was lead off in the first two ball games.
- 1:04:57Now he's been dropped down the ladder. Here's a hard hit ball to deep right center field.
- 1:05:00I believe it is gone. Yes, it is.
- 1:05:03Home run over the right field fence for Norm Miller.
- 1:05:06He really tagged that pitch from Bill Stoneman.
- 1:05:11And Miller makes the circuit.
- 1:05:14Here at Jerry Park and Houston lead this ball game three to one.
- 1:05:18Good hard shot by Norm Miller. He really tagged it.
- 1:05:23And for Norm Miller, that home run is second of the year.
- 1:05:31Second home run of the year for Norm Miller.
- 1:05:35So that's Miller's second hit. John Edwards, the catcher, steps in.
- 1:05:40Edwards struck out first time up. This is foul to the left side into the seat.
- 1:05:47And a free baseball for a lucky fan.
- 1:05:52The Houston broadcasters and writers and also Harry Walker will tell you one of the reasons
- 1:05:58Houston's success is John Edwards. This is taken inside for ball one.
- 1:06:03The way he's been handling the Houston pitching staff.
- 1:06:06Edwards has been getting his hits from time to time. He's batting 239.
- 1:06:11Left hand batter, the one-on-one delivery is lined in the left field for at least one.
- 1:06:16Edwards makes the turn at first base.
- 1:06:18John scoops it up and fires it into second.
- 1:06:21And Edwards holds up at first after making the turn.
- 1:06:25A single just beyond the reach of Kevin Collins at third base.
- 1:06:32That's the seventh hit of Bill Stoneman this afternoon.
- 1:06:37Brings up Orlando Martinez. They call him Marty.
- 1:06:40Marty Martinez with Houston. He grounded out short to first in the second inning.
- 1:06:45Three to one ball game now for the Astros.
- 1:06:50Elroy Faith is heading out to the bullpen to start warming up.
- 1:06:56Martinez, the left hand batter.
- 1:06:58Tony takes his toe off the rubber momentarily.
- 1:07:02Now he's back on it once again.
- 1:07:06And here's the first pitch to Martinez. It's low and outside.
- 1:07:11As John Bateman had to get into the dirt to get that one.
- 1:07:17One-on-oh.
- 1:07:20Hank Aaron, one of the most fabulous players in baseball, will be here tomorrow night.
- 1:07:25The Expos meet the Astros at 8.05.
- 1:07:28The one-on-oh pitch is lined in the center field.
- 1:07:31Fairley is standing there, takes it, pull the out.
- 1:07:37Line fly ball to Ron Fairley in center field.
- 1:07:40One away. Brings up Don Wilson, the pitcher.
- 1:07:44Wilson bats right-handed. He's looking down to Saldy Parker at third base.
- 1:07:50To get the sign. With a runner on first and one out, Wilson may just square around
- 1:07:57and try to move that man to second with a sacrifice.
- 1:08:01Fairley has moved over a bit to left center field.
- 1:08:05Stop playing through right. So we've got a bit of a gap in right center.
- 1:08:13He fits, he squares around, the ball is foul.
- 1:08:170-1.
- 1:08:19The crowd has to be around 23,000 here this afternoon.
- 1:08:26Here's Jim Fanning, the general manager of the Expos, taking his seat behind home plate.
- 1:08:31Jim will shortly be going out to Vancouver to visit the Expos Farm Club, the Vancouver Mounties.
- 1:08:40All-in-one account on Wilson.
- 1:08:44One out and one on. One run in by a home run by Norm Miller.
- 1:08:52Stallman checks his man at first base.
- 1:08:54The bunt attempt is down the first baseline foul, fielded by Ty Klein.
- 1:08:59Ty and Collins, of course, moving in for the bunt.
- 1:09:01Wine going down to second base.
- 1:09:04And Gary Southerman over to the bag at first to take the throw.
- 1:09:09Terrific day for baseball here at Jerry Park this afternoon.
- 1:09:15Fans, don't forget it will be your last chance to see Hank Aaron, Orlando Cepeda,
- 1:09:20and the Braves this week starting tomorrow night.
- 1:09:23Try to make it for one of those four games.
- 1:09:25Doubleheader Tuesday, single game Wednesday.
- 1:09:30All-in-two is the count.
- 1:09:31Wilson squares around a bunt again and bunted foul.
- 1:09:34He's out of there.
- 1:09:40So you can log that as another strikeout for Bill Stallman.
- 1:09:45It's fourth strikeout of the afternoon.
- 1:09:49It's fifth strikeout, check that.
- 1:09:56Brings up Sandy Valdezpino.
- 1:09:59Valdezpino struck out in the first and fouled out to Mack Jones and Leftfield in the third inning.
- 1:10:04Left hand batter.
- 1:10:05Edwards still the runner on first base with two outs.
- 1:10:08This one hit on the ground right to Ty Klein.
- 1:10:10Ty will tie the bag and that's it.
- 1:10:13Quality out throw in the top of the fourth.
- 1:10:16They picked up one run on the home run by Norm Miller, two hits, no errors, and one man was left on base.
- 1:10:24The score as we go to the bottom half of the fourth inning is three to one Houston.
- 1:10:30Fans, we'd like to remind you of tomorrow night's game with the Atlanta Braves.
- 1:10:35Atlanta's coming in for a big four-game, three-day series, beginning with a single game tomorrow night starting at 8.05.
- 1:10:43And tomorrow night is camera night.
- 1:10:46From 7 to 7.30, the fans will be able to go onto the field, take the cameras with them, take pictures of their favorite Montreal Expos players.
- 1:10:54Tomorrow night between 7 and 7.30, then the game will start at 8.05, the game between the Expos and the Braves.
- 1:11:01George Stone, young left-hander, will be on the mound for Atlanta.
- 1:11:05And Jerry Robertson will be pitching for the Expos.
- 1:11:09And we have learned that on Tuesday night for the doubleheader, Gary Wazlowski and Larry Jaster will be going to the Expos, Pat Jarvis and Jim Britton for Atlanta.
- 1:11:18And on Wednesday night, Steve Ranko pitching for our Expos, Phil Negrow for the Atlanta Braves.
- 1:11:31Well, here in the bottom half of the fourth inning for the Expos, we'll be looking at John Bateman, Bobby Wine, and Bill Stoneman.
- 1:11:37Some of the other town scorers.
- 1:11:39No score, Dodgers and St. Louis, bottom half of the second inning.
- 1:11:43No score, Chicago and San Diego in the bottom of the second.
- 1:11:46Atlanta has scored. Bob Tillman hit his tenth home run of the year in the third with nobody aboard.
- 1:11:52Atlanta leads that game 1-0.
- 1:11:54Cincinnati and Philadelphia, it's 4-2 for the Phillies over the Reds in the top of the third.
- 1:11:59And it's 1-0 Giants and the Pirates in the top half of the fourth inning.
- 1:12:07John Bateman facing Don Wilson.
- 1:12:10Wilson delivers his first ball. There's a hard hit ball by John.
- 1:12:14Deep left field, it is Don Walker.
- 1:12:27John Bateman has just hit a home run for the Expos.
- 1:12:33In the Joanville, oh, you see him play it.
- 1:12:37Bateman stood at home plate, took a bow right toward Harry Walker and the entire Houston dugout.
- 1:12:45Apparently they've been writing Bateman quite furiously.
- 1:12:49And Big John stood at home plate, bowed, put his cap to his chest, and made a beautiful bow.
- 1:12:56Oh, beautiful John.
- 1:13:01The first pitch of Bobby Wine has hit way back to Wilson.
- 1:13:05A waste of the body, Wine is there, especially William.
- 1:13:14A base hit for Bobby Wine.
- 1:13:16He lined that ball way back to Wilson. It's needed, Wilson in the chest.
- 1:13:22Bounce to the left side, Wilson chased it, so did the first baseman, Kurt Bleffery.
- 1:13:28Wilson couldn't pick it up but raced the bag just the same.
- 1:13:32And Wine is on with a single. That was a good solid smash by Bobby, incidentally.
- 1:13:36Had it gone either side of Wilson, it would have gone out into center field through that gap.
- 1:13:43Now the Expos have come alive here in the bottom half of the fourth inning.
- 1:13:47Bateman leading off with his sixth home run of the year in a Jonesville.
- 1:13:53And Bobby Wine has lined a single off the chest of pitcher Don Wilson.
- 1:13:59Stole him in the batter. He'll turn around a bunch, tries to put this one down, foul-tips it for strike one.
- 1:14:08Fouls, it's just too bad he couldn't have seen that performance by John Bateman.
- 1:14:14He stood all played after crossing, after hitting that home run into the left field seat,
- 1:14:18and bowed from the waist down, putting his cap on his chest, right toward the Houston dugout.
- 1:14:25Well, I'll tell you, another attempted bunt by Stoneman and foul, strike two.
- 1:14:34It was halfway through this ballgame. Bateman was with Harry Walker in the Astros last year,
- 1:14:40and he was left unprotected in the National League graph last October 14th.
- 1:14:50So John, of course, will have to turn in a solid performance this afternoon,
- 1:14:56because those Astros will certainly get on his back if anything goes awry.
- 1:15:00This is a bunt after one. They play it to first base, a stack of price work.
- 1:15:13Two to four of you are scoring. That's catched by John Edwards, the second base,
- 1:15:17when Martinez is taking the throw at first.
- 1:15:20So that puts Wine in scoring position.
- 1:15:24The tying run is on second base. Three to two for Houston over the X-Balls,
- 1:15:31here in the bottom half of the fourth inning.
- 1:15:34One out, runner on second is Bobby Wine.
- 1:15:42The pitch to Klein is tied outside for ball one.
- 1:15:58The one-and-oh pitch is hit on the ground out of short.
- 1:16:01The runner, Bobby, momentarily by Menke over the first in time.
- 1:16:07The runner advances to third, Bobby Wine.
- 1:16:11The Wine's on third, brings up Gary Sutherland.
- 1:16:14The game is over. The second baseman's done. Gary Sutherland.
- 1:16:20Sutherland had a single of that field in the first inning
- 1:16:24and grounded out to third baseman Martinez next time up.
- 1:16:31Scoring that sacrifice, I believe I said Martinez going to the back at first.
- 1:16:35Actually it was Morgan in the second baseman. Martinez is at third.
- 1:16:38It's not fly, back of short. Now Martinez at third will call for it and he takes it.
- 1:16:45And that's it for the X-Balls.
- 1:16:47But they fix up a run on the home run by baseman.
- 1:16:50Two hits, no Houston errors, and one man was left on.
- 1:16:55After four complete innings of play, Houston leads three to two.
- 1:17:04Minnesota games underway, Los Angeles, St. Louis scoreless in the second.
- 1:17:08San Diego and Chicago are scoreless in the second.
- 1:17:11The same is true of Atlanta and New York scoreless in the second.
- 1:17:14Philadelphia four, Cincinnati two, they're in the third inning at Philadelphia.
- 1:17:19Giants and the Pirates tied one-one in the fourth.
- 1:17:22Over in the American League, Baltimore and Minnesota no score in the first inning.
- 1:17:27Chicago and Detroit are scoreless in the second.
- 1:17:30Cleveland and Kansas City no score in the second.
- 1:17:34Other double-headers today, Boston's and Oakland for two games.
- 1:17:38Now that's the only other double-header.
- 1:17:39Washington will be at California, New York will be at Seattle to round out the American League schedule.
- 1:17:46A reminder, fans, that the Atlanta Braves are here tomorrow night.
- 1:17:49Last chance to see Hammer and Hank Aaron and the rest of the stars of the Atlanta team.
- 1:17:54Tomorrow night, double-header Tuesday and a single game Wednesday for the Atlanta series here at Jerry Parks.
- 1:18:04That home run by Bateman is sixth of the year.
- 1:18:06It is third against the Houston Astros.
- 1:18:08So Bateman really likes to go for distance against his old ball club.
- 1:18:14Now for Houston, we'll be looking at Joe Morgan, Jimmy Wynn and Dennis Menke, the tough part of the batting order.
- 1:18:22Followed by Bluffery and Miller.
- 1:18:26Morgan is one for one.
- 1:18:27He walked in the first inning, got as far as third on a double by Wynn.
- 1:18:32It was left-threaded there.
- 1:18:34When Menke struck out and Bluffery flied out to right field.
- 1:18:37And in the third inning, Wynn knocked in a run with a, rather Morgan got on with a single to right field.
- 1:18:46And Wynn knocked him in with a single after Morgan had stolen second base.
- 1:18:50The first pitch to Joe Morgan is taken for a call strike, strike one.
- 1:18:56Exposed outfield in case you've just joined us.
- 1:18:59Ron Fairley in center field.
- 1:19:00Mack Jones in left and Rusty Saab in right.
- 1:19:05Strike two, ball.
- 1:19:06Again Morgan took the fast ball from Bill Stoneman.
- 1:19:11Few changes in the outfield, in the infield rather.
- 1:19:15Kevin Collins is at third and Gary Southerland at second. Wynn's at short and Klein is at first base.
- 1:19:22High and inside for ball one.
- 1:19:24That's Klein at first, Southerland at second.
- 1:19:27Collins at third and Wynn at short.
- 1:19:30Batteries Bill Stoneman and John Bateman.
- 1:19:34One and two to count on Joe Morgan.
- 1:19:37Stoneman out in front of the batter.
- 1:19:39Nobody out.
- 1:19:40Morgan the leadoff man here in the top of the fifth.
- 1:19:43This is low for ball two. Two and two to count.
- 1:19:47Terrific crowd here this afternoon and a terrific day for baseball.
- 1:19:56Very impressive opening ceremony this afternoon.
- 1:20:00Suzanne LaPointe was flown in.
- 1:20:05Steinman in Ashland.
- 1:20:06This is a line drive to left center field for at least one.
- 1:20:09Morgan makes a turn at first.
- 1:20:10He's going to go to second as the ball rolls out of the right center field fence.
- 1:20:13Now he's on his way to third and he'll be in standing up with a triple.
- 1:20:17Joe Morgan hits a triple to left center field and went all the way up to the fence in the gap between Ron Fairley and Mac Jones.
- 1:20:27So Stoneman starting off here in the fifth finds himself in trouble with nobody out.
- 1:20:36A runner on third.
- 1:20:38Rings up Jimmy Winn.
- 1:20:40Winn has had a double and a single.
- 1:20:43He knocked in Morgan with a single in the third inning.
- 1:21:06The first pitch to Jimmy Winn is inside for ball one.
- 1:21:11Elroy Fates is starting to warm up once again for the Expos.
- 1:21:16Astros have picked up eight hits and we're in the top half of the fifth inning.
- 1:21:22They lead this ball game three to two.
- 1:21:27The one and 0 delivery is hit on the ground foul right past Salty Parker, the third base coach for the Astros.
- 1:21:43One ball and one strike.
- 1:21:59The one and one delivery.
- 1:22:01Second book, ball strike. Let's take ten seconds for station identification.
- 1:22:05This is the Expo Baseball Radio Network.
- 1:22:08This is the home of Expo Baseball in the Capital District, WHRL in Albany, New York.
- 1:22:19One and two to count on Jimmy Winn. Right hand batter.
- 1:22:22Nobody out. Top half of the fifth inning.
- 1:22:24Runner on third base is Joe Morgan.
- 1:22:27The one and two delivery is fouled into the dirt.
- 1:22:30Strike. He missed it. He didn't get a piece of it. It hit the dirt and Jimmy Winn is out of there.
- 1:22:35He strikes out.
- 1:22:37Strikeout number six.
- 1:22:42Mark Thornman.
- 1:22:45Winn went after a sinker that just hit just behind home plate and it bounced around there and for a moment we thought he got a piece of it, but John Bateman picked it up and tagged the runner.
- 1:22:57For the batter.
- 1:23:01Winn didn't even have a chance to move out of the batter's box.
- 1:23:04The first pitch, pitch out, called by Bateman, but Morgan's held close to the bag at third.
- 1:23:12Dennis Manke struck out in the first and singled in a run in the third inning.
- 1:23:17Delivered a solid smash to center field.
- 1:23:21One away.
- 1:23:30The one and oh delivery is hit just past third out of the left field for a base hit and the Astros have another run.
- 1:23:37Manke took a wide turn at first. The ball got away momentarily from Jones, but Dennis held up and went back to first.
- 1:23:43So he gets a single. To left field, his second hit of the afternoon.
- 1:23:48Runner Morgan scoring.
- 1:23:52And it's now a two run lead for Houston.
- 1:23:54In the top of the fifth.
- 1:23:57One away.
- 1:24:03The Astros have pounded Bill Stallman for nine hits.
- 1:24:14Kurt Bluffery.
- 1:24:16Flawed out to right field in the first.
- 1:24:19Flawed out to left field in the third inning. Left hand batter.
- 1:24:23The pitch hits low for ball one.
- 1:24:27When Bluffery put that one right against the fence in right center field, Rusty Stobb made a fine running catch.
- 1:24:34Identical play from yesterday when Stobb had trouble with it and hit the fence and went for a triple, scoring two runs.
- 1:24:44The one and oh pitch is in there for a call strike.
- 1:24:52One ball and one strike.
- 1:24:55Ladies listening in, don't forget, mark down this date, August 13th.
- 1:25:00Every lady entering Jerry Park will receive a free gift. August 13th.
- 1:25:07One and one on Bluffery.
- 1:25:09Taking for a call strike.
- 1:25:13Stallman had a change of speed on that pitch.
- 1:25:18And the count is one and two.
- 1:25:21Menke on first base, one run in, Morgan. He tripled and came home in the single by Menke.
- 1:25:27Four to two, Houston.
- 1:25:34Stallman delivers, it's inside for ball two. Two balls and two strikes.
- 1:25:51Stobb is deep in right field, almost to the warning track. Jones is in a bit in left center.
- 1:25:57The next one, swing on a miss.
- 1:26:00Four, strike three. Breakout number seven for Bill Stallman.
- 1:26:07Brings up Norm Miller. Miller has been bad news for Stallman.
- 1:26:13He single in the second, later thrown out.
- 1:26:19Going down to second base when Edwards struck out.
- 1:26:21Then in the fourth inning Miller hit one over the right field fence for a home run.
- 1:26:28Left hand batter, Norm Miller, and Stobb is playing deep in right.
- 1:26:32Fairly deep in center.
- 1:26:35And Jones just in a bit in left field.
- 1:26:39He first pitch to Miller is fouled right up over the screen.
- 1:26:44Four, strike one.
- 1:26:49Four and one on Norm Miller.
- 1:26:53The ball night's game starts at 8.05.
- 1:26:56Marriere, Orlando Sepeda.
- 1:27:01Phil Nicolai. Nicolai won't be pitching.
- 1:27:03It'll be George Stone, the left-hander, going against the X-Bows in the series opener tomorrow night.
- 1:27:10Ball strike, 0-2 on Miller.
- 1:27:15Pat Jarvis and Jim Britton will be Lillen Harris' pitching choices for the doubleheader Tuesday night.
- 1:27:23And Anthony Crawl, the knuckleball artist, will be pitching in the windup Wednesday.
- 1:27:35The 0-2 pitch is way outside.
- 1:27:37There goes the runner down to second.
- 1:27:39And they got it.
- 1:27:40Fine throw by John Bateman.
- 1:27:44Nails Dennis Blanky.
- 1:27:47Bobby Wine making the tie.
- 1:27:50Though the Astros picked up one run on two hits, no errors and nobody left on.
- 1:27:56Going to the bottom half of the fifth inning, the score, 4-2 for Houston.
- 1:28:03Take a look at the scoreboard now.
- 1:28:05That Los Angeles-St. Louis game in the bottom of the third is St. Louis, no score.
- 1:28:10Claude Osteen for the Dodgers.
- 1:28:12And Taylor on the mound for St. Louis.
- 1:28:16San Diego, Chicago, no score after one and a half.
- 1:28:19Joe Negron against Dix Selma in that one.
- 1:28:22Atlanta won, New York nothing, at Shea Stadium.
- 1:28:25The end of three innings, Milt Pappas against Gary Gentry.
- 1:28:34The Cincinnati game at Philadelphia is now 4-2.
- 1:28:37The Phillies lead the Reds.
- 1:28:39They're in the third inning.
- 1:28:40Clay Carroll now on the mound for Cincinnati.
- 1:28:42And Al Raffo is pitching for Philadelphia, both in relief.
- 1:28:48San Francisco, three, Pittsburgh, one, at the end of four at Forbes Field.
- 1:28:53J. Lord Perry is on the mound for the Giants.
- 1:28:57And Doc Ellis pitching for Pittsburgh.
- 1:29:01Over in the American League, Baltimore and Minnesota scoreless after one.
- 1:29:08For the X-Balls in the bottom of the fifth, it will be Rusty Stobb, Mac Jones, and Ron Fairley.
- 1:29:13Stobb is hitless, Rusty walked in the first inning and took out in the third.
- 1:29:21So LaGladaan would love to nail one.
- 1:29:28Not only for the ball club, but he's playing against his ex-teammate.
- 1:29:33Played with Houston last year.
- 1:29:38Ron Wilson's all set. His first pitch to Rusty is low and outside for ball one.
- 1:29:44One ball and no strike.
- 1:29:51Rusty steps out of the batter's box for a moment.
- 1:29:53The outfield boys at Everett Deep on Stobb.
- 1:29:56Wynn is in deep center field.
- 1:30:00Val Vespino, deep and left, moved way over toward left center field.
- 1:30:05And Norm Miller is deep and right.
- 1:30:08Joe Morgan is playing on the outfield grass at second.
- 1:30:11Fastball is taken for a call strike, one and one on Stobb.
- 1:30:17Loughrey, barely deep at first base.
- 1:30:22Morgan is out on the outfield grass.
- 1:30:25Now he moves back even more.
- 1:30:26The one-on-one delivery.
- 1:30:27Line shot left field foul, out of play.
- 1:30:31Hey, a fine catch by a fan in left field.
- 1:30:34In the seats just to the left of the Expo bullpen.
- 1:30:40So we salute that fan.
- 1:30:43Nice to see some fine feeling plays on the stands once in a while.
- 1:30:48The one-on-two pitch, outside for ball two.
- 1:30:53Two-on-two.
- 1:30:56Mack Jones in the on-deck circle.
- 1:31:02Time is called. A new ball thrown out by the plate umpire Al Barling.
- 1:31:08Spalek's behind the plate.
- 1:31:09Vargos at first.
- 1:31:10Kibler at second.
- 1:31:12And Olson at third.
- 1:31:17The two-on-two pitch.
- 1:31:19Foul right up over the screen.
- 1:31:26Two balls and two strikes.
- 1:31:39Wilson shakes off a sign from John Edwards.
- 1:31:41He's all set.
- 1:31:42And here's the two-on-two pitch.
- 1:31:45Strike. What is it? Ah, ball three.
- 1:31:48John Edwards jumps up and puts the tag on Stubb.
- 1:31:51Rusty didn't swing at it.
- 1:31:54He came around.
- 1:31:55No, he's out of there now.
- 1:31:59He was overruled by the first base umpire.
- 1:32:03The man at first, Ed Vargo,
- 1:32:06signal that Stubb went around.
- 1:32:08The Rusty strikes out.
- 1:32:19Mack Jones takes the first one high outside for ball one.
- 1:32:24Well, that's the second time we've seen that in this series,
- 1:32:27where the first base umpire will make the ruling on a swinging strike.
- 1:32:36Swung out and missed for strike one.
- 1:32:38Mack is having his problems trying to time that fastball of Don Wilson.
- 1:32:42Boy, Wilson is really blazing it in on Jones.
- 1:32:45Mack struck out in the first and walked in the third.
- 1:32:49But if he ever makes contact, look out.
- 1:32:52Here's the one and oh, one and one.
- 1:32:54Swung out and missed for strike two.
- 1:32:56One ball and two strikes.
- 1:33:00Larry Jaster warming up for the X-Balls in their bullpen.
- 1:33:04A left-hander.
- 1:33:16The one and two pitch.
- 1:33:18Followed against the screen.
- 1:33:19You got a piece of it that time just out the bat handle.
- 1:33:28Boy, the camera bugs are going to have a whale of a time tomorrow night
- 1:33:31with their favorite ball players, Rusty Stubb and Mack Jones
- 1:33:34and Ron Fairley and Gary Sutherland.
- 1:33:38Remember, you'll be allowed on the field at 7 o'clock with your cameras
- 1:33:43and it's off the field at 7.30.
- 1:33:46Get those cameras loaded and ready to click.
- 1:33:50The one and two pitch.
- 1:33:52Strike three swings.
- 1:33:54Jones has struck out.
- 1:34:00That's another strikeout for Don Wilson.
- 1:34:03His eighth.
- 1:34:06In four of the five innings now, Rossi's struck out two in each inning.
- 1:34:12Well, as Dave pointed out and I guess a lot of ball fans know,
- 1:34:17fellow Don Wilson tied the Major League record 18 strikeouts in one game.
- 1:34:23This one is low to Ron Fairley.
- 1:34:27Fairley bounced out to first base in the first inning and singled in the third.
- 1:34:34Single the center field.
- 1:34:36The one and oh delivery is low for ball two.
- 1:34:41In case you've just joined us, four to two for Houston over Montreal.
- 1:34:47Two home runs in this game, one by Norm Miller of the Astros
- 1:34:51and one by John Bateman of the Expos.
- 1:34:54Bateman hit his into Jonesville in the fourth inning.
- 1:34:58Miller hit his over the right field fence.
- 1:35:01On the outside corner, four strike one.
- 1:35:05Two balls and one strike.
- 1:35:08We're in the bottom half of the fifth inning here at Jerry Park in Montreal.
- 1:35:12Glad to have all of you aboard the Expo Baseball Network.
- 1:35:19The two and one pitch is inside and the count becomes three and one in Ron Fairley.
- 1:35:31Big crowd here at Jerry Park.
- 1:35:36Tremendous afternoon. A big crowd in the swimming pool to the back of the scoreboard.
- 1:35:40Municipal pool. Here is the three and one pitch to Fairley.
- 1:35:42He follows it on the ground along the first base line and fielded by Bob Oles.
- 1:35:47Now Ron Fairley has just fallen over.
- 1:35:50He's down on his hands and knees.
- 1:35:52The piece of that ball may have glanced off his foot.
- 1:35:58Joe Lisio is down there examining it.
- 1:36:00Dave, did you see what happened?
- 1:36:02Yeah, the ball fell tipped off his right ankle on the inside.
- 1:36:08I believe, I don't believe it was the shin.
- 1:36:10I think it was the inside.
- 1:36:11So he undoubtedly has suffered a bruise.
- 1:36:17Just how bad it is, of course we don't know.
- 1:36:20Ron sitting down and Joe taking a look at it.
- 1:36:22We'll just have to wait until we hear from Joe Lisio.
- 1:36:25These injuries, you know, there's a nerve center there.
- 1:36:29It's a very sensitive area to a blow like that.
- 1:36:34And oft times, and we hope this is the case in this instance,
- 1:36:38it would appear worse than what it is because of the pain of the instance.
- 1:36:44The player sometimes will appear injured worse than what he really is.
- 1:36:49We hope that that's the case.
- 1:36:50It just hurts right now that it's not bad at all.
- 1:36:53Fairley is on his feet.
- 1:36:55He's having difficulties all.
- 1:36:57Trying to move that, just trying to put any weight on that right foot.
- 1:37:02Dr. Bob Roderick is up in the press box looking down.
- 1:37:06I don't think Ron's going to be able to continue.
- 1:37:09I'm just guessing right now, but the way he's limping around there,
- 1:37:14and that would be a tough break because Fairley came back into the lineup
- 1:37:18after being on that 21-day injury reserve list.
- 1:37:22Yesterday he had a home run out of the park,
- 1:37:24pleasing the crowd and of course pleasing himself.
- 1:37:27Taking that bat and he's using it as a cane.
- 1:37:30Still walking around.
- 1:37:33Joe Lisio talking to him.
- 1:37:35Ron trying to test his weight.
- 1:37:38The count on Fairley is three and two.
- 1:37:45Now he walks away now, walking very slowly through the play.
- 1:37:53Gets a fine round of applause from the crowd.
- 1:37:56And it looks like Ron Fairley is going to stay in there.
- 1:38:03Three balls and two strikes.
- 1:38:05Fairley has not moved back into the batter's box yet.
- 1:38:08Trying to take just a little time just to work that foot a bit,
- 1:38:12test his weight on it.
- 1:38:26Well, he's in the batter's box now.
- 1:38:29Count three balls and two strikes on Ron Fairley.
- 1:38:33The pitch, low and outside, ball four.
- 1:38:36Fairley is on with a walk and he is limping down a first base.
- 1:38:45The batter will be Kevin Collins.
- 1:38:50Collins had a single in the second inning, scored a run,
- 1:38:54went all the way to third on an error by Joe Morgan.
- 1:39:00And then he scored on a wild pitch.
- 1:39:03Left-hand batter Kevin Collins.
- 1:39:06Fairley, the runner on first base.
- 1:39:17Wilson all set.
- 1:39:19Delivers, swung on a miss, got a piece of it.
- 1:39:22Strike one.
- 1:39:28On one.
- 1:39:33Outfield straightaway and deep on Collins.
- 1:39:36And here's the on one pitch.
- 1:39:38Strike two call.
- 1:39:41And Wilson's out in front of Collins.
- 1:39:44Collins, playing in place of Coco Laboy in this first game,
- 1:39:47will likely see Coco in the second game.
- 1:39:52Bateman catching the first game,
- 1:39:54and Brand will catch the second game.
- 1:39:58The 0-2 pitch, high and inside.
- 1:40:00Collins had it.
- 1:40:02Really hit the dirt in that one.
- 1:40:19The next one is hit foul along the first baseline roll
- 1:40:22toward the Houston dugout.
- 1:40:30One ball and two strikes on Kev Collins.
- 1:40:41Wilson taking his time.
- 1:40:43Fairley, the runner on first base, two outs,
- 1:40:45bottom half of the fifth inning.
- 1:40:47The next pitch, swung on a miss, oh, held up.
- 1:40:51Again, he held up on his swing.
- 1:40:57And the count is 2-2.
- 1:41:03Collins' wrist didn't break on that swing.
- 1:41:05He went right around on that pitch,
- 1:41:08but did not break his wrist.
- 1:41:12The 2-2 pitch popped into the air.
- 1:41:14It's not a play.
- 1:41:16Down in front of us.
- 1:41:19And the count remains 2-2.
- 1:41:28Kev Collins still in there.
- 1:41:334-2 Houston over the Expos in the bottom half of the fifth inning.
- 1:41:40This next one is swung on a miss this time for strike three.
- 1:41:43Strikeout number nine, Don Wilson strikes out the side.
- 1:41:48For the Expos, no runs, no hits, no errors.
- 1:41:51One man left on base.
- 1:41:53After five complete innings of play,
- 1:41:55the score is still 4-2 for Houston.
- 1:42:01Now let's get back to the scoreboard now
- 1:42:03and take a look at what changes may or may not have taken place.
- 1:42:07The San Francisco-Bitsburg game in the bottom of the fifth.
- 1:42:10No change on that one.
- 1:42:113-1 San Francisco leading Bitsburg.
- 1:42:16And all of the other scores remain the same.
- 1:42:18Chicago won San Diego nothing in the third.
- 1:42:20Atlanta won New York nothing in the fifth.
- 1:42:22Los Angeles won St. Louis nothing in the fourth.
- 1:42:27Baltimore and Minnesota, that's Dave McNally against Jim Cot.
- 1:42:30And this afternoon, Dave McNally is going for his 16th consecutive victory.
- 1:42:39Jim Cot pitching for the Minnesota Twins.
- 1:42:42There's no score after one and a half.
- 1:42:44Detroit leading Chicago one nothing after two.
- 1:42:46And Kansas City and Cleveland are scoreless at the end of two.
- 1:42:50That's Louis Tion for the Indians and Wally Bunker for Kansas City.
- 1:42:55And that's our check of the scoreboard up to now.
- 1:42:59We've got a new pitcher for the Expos,
- 1:43:02Larry Jaster, left-hander, coming in a pitch for the Expos here in the sixth inning.
- 1:43:09Larry Jaster slowly getting back into pitching form.
- 1:43:23Ron Fairley moves to first base.
- 1:43:26Ty Klein will be out in center field.
- 1:43:29Fairley will play first for the Expos here in the top of the sixth.
- 1:43:34Ty Klein will be in center field.
- 1:43:37All right, now Larry Jaster's record.
- 1:43:40Jaster is appearing in his 19th ballgame.
- 1:43:45He has won one loss five and an earned run average of 4.65
- 1:43:50for the 60th inning he has pitched with the Expos.
- 1:43:55Pitching coach Cal McClish has been spending a great deal of time
- 1:44:02with Larry Jaster over the past month and a half or so
- 1:44:06trying to help him develop another pitch.
- 1:44:09Larry Jaster is on the hill to pitch to Norm Miller left-hand batter.
- 1:44:17Bill Stallman lasted five innings, tagged for four runs, gave up nine hits,
- 1:44:25struck out seven batters, and he walked first balls, ball one, to Norm Miller,
- 1:44:33and he walked only one.
- 1:44:38Curve ball taken for ball two.
- 1:44:44The infield remains the same.
- 1:44:46Well, no, it's Fairley at first.

- 1:44:49Settle on at second.
- 1:44:50Wine at short, Collins at third.
- 1:44:52Curve ball swung on a miss for strike one.
- 1:45:01Stub deep in right field.
- 1:45:06The two-and-one delivery is bundled down to Collins.
- 1:45:08He charges it, picks it up, for the first take at the runner.
- 1:45:13Miller tried to cross up the actual infield.
- 1:45:18No, he had singled and hit a home run, tried to push one down the third baseline,
- 1:45:22and Collins gave it the charge at third,
- 1:45:24shipped it up and whipped it over to Ron Fairley for the out.
- 1:45:34One away.
- 1:45:36Edwards the batter.
- 1:45:37He had a single in the fourth.
- 1:45:39This one's hit down the line in left field.

- 1:45:44Into the corner is Mack Jones.
- 1:45:45The ball gets away from him.
- 1:45:46Edwards is going to go to third.
- 1:45:48Here comes the throw.
- 1:45:49Relay.
- 1:45:50Take.
- 1:45:54At third.
- 1:45:55Edwards is on third with a triple.
- 1:46:03He just got that one down the line in left field.
- 1:46:06Jones had shifted over more toward left center field.
- 1:46:09Mack had it chasing in the corner and took a bounce the wrong way on him.
- 1:46:13And he got to it.
- 1:46:14Still couldn't get the handle on it.
- 1:46:18And Edwards, not a speed ball by any means, made it all the way to third.
- 1:46:24Play was close.
- 1:46:26Wine taking the relay from.
- 1:46:29Brother Collins taking the relay from Wine.
- 1:46:32Would receive the ball from Jones.

- 1:53:48The two and two pitch, on the ground down a second, in court as Morgan, over to first and Wines out.
- 1:53:57Two away and Bob Bailey moves in a pinch hit.
- 1:54:05Bailey yesterday came in as a pinch hitter and hit one just inches foul in left field, inches away from a home run.
- 1:54:18And then that was foul. Next pitch he sent a zeuselue back to the fence.
- 1:54:25It was that close.

- 1:55:18And come around quickly on that fastball from Mr. Don Wilson.
- 1:55:25He won a one pitch, it's foul to the right of it.

- 1:57:24And Bob Bailey was there at first base.
- 1:57:27Ron Fairley leaves the ballgame.
- 1:57:29He injured his foot on a foul tip.
- 1:57:33And was moved from center field to first base for the last inning.
- 1:57:37We're moving Klein out to center field.
- 1:57:40And now manager Gene Mark will leave Bob Bailey in the lineup.
- 1:57:44And Bailey is at first.
- 1:57:46So at infield, changed the bid again.

- 1:58:05First pitch to Sandy Valda-Spino.
- 1:58:08Fly ball foul down the left field line out of play.
- 1:58:11Drew a crowd.
- 1:58:12Mack Jones, Kevin Collins, Bobby Wynton were all back there and none could get it.
- 1:58:180-1 to Valda-Spino.
- 1:58:20The Astros lead 5-2 here in the seventh.
- 1:58:23Dave after six complete innings of play.
- 1:58:26Houston five runs, 11 hits and one error.
- 1:58:28Montreal two runs on five hits and one error.
- 1:58:35Valda-Spino does not have one of those 11 hits.
- 1:58:39He's over three.
- 1:58:43Ian Bleffrey and Wilson have been shut out this afternoon in the hit department.
- 1:58:47Here's a ground ball left side.
- 1:58:48Wynton with it, throws the first.
- 1:58:50Valda-Spino is out.
- 1:58:52One away.
- 1:58:55Larry Jaster went one inning.
- 1:58:58Gave up one run on two hits, struck out one.
- 1:59:01Joe Morgan.
- 1:59:05Joe Morgan will be the batter and he has had a perfect day.
- 1:59:08Two for two with a walk.
- 1:59:09He's scored two runs, has stolen a base.
- 1:59:13He tripled his last time up.
- 1:59:14That was in the fifth inning.
- 1:59:19Jim Winn on deck.
- 1:59:20Morgan's left hand hitter.
- 1:59:24Bich is cut on and a high fly ball down the right field line, foul and out of play.
- 1:59:29Way down there, about 300 feet.
- 1:59:33All in one to Morgan.
- 1:59:46Face rubbing up a new ball, ready to go now, looking down to John Bateman for the side.
- 1:59:51Our second game, Larry Jerker will be pitching for Houston.
- 1:59:55Here's the 0-1 pitch.
- 1:59:57Bunnett, third base side, charging Collins.
- 1:59:59Fair has it, missed the ball.
- 2:00:06Morgan with an infield hit, bunning safely.
- 2:00:09His third hit of the day.
- 2:00:12And with one out, Morgan's on.
- 2:00:14The batter will be Jim Winn.
- 2:00:18Howie Reed will be pitching for the Expos in the second game.
- 2:00:21The center fielder, Jim Winn.
- 2:00:29Jerker is 13-8 on the year.
- 2:00:32Reed is 5-2.
- 2:00:36We're in the seventh here of our first game.
- 2:00:38Houston leading 5-2.
- 2:00:39Jim Winn at the plate.
- 2:00:40He's two for three, doubled, singled, and then struck out.
- 2:00:44Takes the ball.
- 2:00:52Center fielder, Ty Klein, a few steps into left center.
- 2:00:58Winn doubled the right center.
- 2:01:00It's a quick throw to first base, getting back in time as Morgan.
- 2:01:09Morgan's steal in the third was his 25th.
- 2:01:17Betches low and outside, ball two.
- 2:01:20Two and nothing to Jim Winn.
- 2:01:23Ron Fairley has suffered a bruise just above the instep of his right ankle.
- 2:01:28He'll be all right.
- 2:01:33Here's the two up.
- 2:01:34Roy stepped off the rubber.
- 2:01:36It's getting set for the 2-0 to win.
- 2:01:39The stretch again.
- 2:01:40Now he deals.
- 2:01:41It's cut on and popped up.
- 2:01:42Left side of the inbiel, way up there.
- 2:01:45Kevin Collins, Bobby Wine.
- 2:01:46Wine makes the catch.
- 2:01:51It's two away.
- 2:01:54The batter will be Dennis Menke, the Houston shortstop.
- 2:01:57Menke struck out his first time up.
- 2:01:59Since then, he's gone two for two.
- 2:02:02Got a base hit up the middle in the third.
- 2:02:03Drove in a run, got a base hit in the fifth and drove in a run.
- 2:02:08So he's two for three and a right-hand hitter.
- 2:02:10Chokes up a little bit on the bat.
- 2:02:12Houston's leading hitter having a great year.
- 2:02:1529-year-old veteran.
- 2:02:20Morgan takes his lead.
- 2:02:21The pitch to Menke.
- 2:02:23Taken, mowing away, ball one.
- 2:02:38For Roy Fase, this is his 39th appearance of the year.
- 2:02:42He makes another throw to first base and Morgan gets back in time.
- 2:02:52Roy trying to get Menke again, throws to first, diving back in as Morgan.
- 2:02:56A great move by Fase.
- 2:02:57Morgan just did get in there.
- 2:03:00He went back in on his belly.
- 2:03:05Roy faked him back that time.
- 2:03:08Gives Morgan a look.
- 2:03:09Here's the pitch way outside to Menke.
- 2:03:12Ball two, two and nothing to Dennis Menke.
- 2:03:15So Morgan's getting a pretty good workout at second.
- 2:03:18But he's been through this before.
- 2:03:20We'll see if he tries to go.
- 2:03:27Face at the belt, looks at Morgan.
- 2:03:29There he goes.
- 2:03:30Here's the throw by Bateman.
- 2:03:32And he is up.
- 2:03:38Bateman to Sutherland.
- 2:03:41And Morgan is out of there.
- 2:03:45Menke left at the plate.
- 2:03:46No runs, one hit.
- 2:03:48No errors, nobody left at the end of 6 1 half.
- 2:03:51Houston 5, the Expos 2.
- 2:03:54On the out of town scoreboard, the Dodgers are leading St. Louis 4 to nothing in the bottom half of the sixth inning.
- 2:04:01Chicago and San Diego are tied 1-all, playing in the top half of the fifth.
- 2:04:05Atlanta leads New York 5 to nothing in the bottom half of the sixth inning.
- 2:04:11Cincinnati and Philadelphia, boy they've got a high scoring ball game going.
- 2:04:159-6 for Philadelphia over Cincinnati, playing in the fifth inning.
- 2:04:20And Lee May has just hit a three-run homer.
- 2:04:23So add another three runs to that Cincinnati score.
- 2:04:27It's now 9-all.
- 2:04:31Cincinnati 9, Philadelphia 9, playing in the fifth inning.
- 2:04:35Boy, a lot of runs, a scorekeeper's nightmare in that ball game.
- 2:04:39The Giants are leading Pittsburgh 3-1, top half of the eighth inning.
- 2:04:42Volibor, Minnesota scoreless in the bottom half of the second.
- 2:04:45Detroit leads Chicago 1-0 in the fifth inning.
- 2:04:49Cleveland leads Kansas City 1-0 in the fifth inning.
- 2:04:54Well, we've seen some sparkling play by John Bateman behind the plate for the Expos.
- 2:04:59He has thrown out three runners at second base.
- 2:05:01He has hit a homerun.
- 2:05:03John is having a good afternoon.
- 2:05:05But right now the Expos trail by three runs.
- 2:05:07It's 5-2 for Houston over Montreal as we go to the bottom half of the seventh inning.
- 2:05:11And Ty Kline.
- 2:05:13Gary Geiger is taking over in left field for the Astros, replacing Sandy Valdespino.
- 2:05:18A delicious move made by Harry the Hadwalker.
- 2:05:24So the Astros came in here and they've been tough.
- 2:05:27They're leading 5-2 here.
- 2:05:29They've won the first two games of this series.
- 2:05:31They're just two and a half games out of first place.
- 2:05:36They're shooting for their eighth straight victory.
- 2:05:38Now Ty Kline, Gary Southerland, Rusty Staub will try to do something about it.
- 2:05:44First pitch to Ty is down low for a ball.
- 2:05:46Ty has been called out on strikes, plied to center, and grounded out to short.
- 2:05:510 for 3.
- 2:05:53Wilson diggles a 1-0.
- 2:05:55Cross the letters for a strike, 1-1.
- 2:06:07Wilson's been tough this afternoon.
- 2:06:09He's fanned 9.
- 2:06:15Here's a ground ball to the first baseman.
- 2:06:17Bluffery up with it.
- 2:06:18Steps on the bag, beating Kline.
- 2:06:20There's one away.
- 2:06:222, 4, 6.
- 2:06:26He's fanned 10.
- 2:06:29Ten strikeouts.
- 2:06:32Gary Southerland, who's 1 for 3, will be the batter.
- 2:06:35Wilson holds the National League record for most strikeouts in a game, which is 18.
- 2:06:41He set it against Cincinnati on June 14th last year.
- 2:06:47The pitch to Gary.
- 2:06:48Swung on, a hard hit ball to the shortstop, Menke.
- 2:06:51He's up with it.
- 2:06:52The throw to first, and Suds is out.
- 2:06:55First ball hitting.
- 2:06:56Two away.
- 2:06:57Rusty Staub will be the batter.
- 2:06:58Rusty walked his first time up.
- 2:07:02Then struck out twice.
- 2:07:04Once in the third and once in the fifth.
- 2:07:16Two down with nobody on, and Houston up by three runs, 5-2 here in the seventh.
- 2:07:23Don Wilson delivers the pitch.
- 2:07:25Hits the inside corner about knee-high for a strike, 0-1.
- 2:07:31They play Staub deep and a round to the right.
- 2:07:33We've had a breeze from left to right all afternoon.
- 2:07:37The only one that's taken advantage of it has been Norm Miller.
- 2:07:41Here's the pitch bowled back to the left side.
- 2:07:45Strike two to Rusty.
- 2:07:47John Bateman's home run, which came in the fourth inning for the Expos, was almost a line-drive home run.
- 2:07:53A solid shot into the left field bleachers.
- 2:08:01Wilson with the 0-2 to stop.
- 2:08:03Low and away.
- 2:08:05One ball, two strikes.
- 2:08:07Dave, Cincinnati have scored ten runs in the top half of the fifth inning.
- 2:08:12They lead Philadelphia by the score of 16-9.
- 2:08:20Next pitch to Rusty is bowled off to the right side of the plate on the ground.
- 2:08:23One ball, two strikes.
- 2:08:24Lee May and Pete Rose have hit three run homers for Cincinnati in the fifth inning.
- 2:08:29And counting for six of those ten, huh?
- 2:08:31That's right.
- 2:08:34And some hitting ball club.
- 2:08:41Here's the 1-2 now to Staub.
- 2:08:43Taken for the third strike called.
- 2:08:46Mark that in your books.
- 2:08:47Third time Staub struck out this afternoon.
- 2:08:50And you're not going to see that too many times in any season from Rusty Staub.
- 2:08:56Nothing across for the Expos here in the seventh.
- 2:09:00The score at the end of seventh, Houston 5 and Montreal 2.
- 2:09:06Well, fans, baseball is fun in the group.
- 2:09:08And there are all kinds of groups here this afternoon taking in today's twin bill between the Expos and the Houston Astros.
- 2:09:16The Albany Social Club from Collinsville, Quebec is here.

- 2:09:54Guaranteed to have loads of fun here at Jerry Park.
- 2:09:57The man of contact is Mr. Roger Savard.
- 2:10:00Roger Savard, he's in charge of group sales at the Montreal Expo office.
- 2:10:08Well, we go now to the top half of the eighth inning.
- 2:10:11Houston leading by three runs, five to two Albany Expos.
- 2:10:14The first man up for Houston, Dennis Menke.
- 2:10:20Menke is two for three, has driven in two runs.
- 2:10:23He was left at the plate when Morgan was thrown out attempting to steal in the seventh.
- 2:10:32Roy Face on the mound delivers a high breaking pitch, ball one.
- 2:10:38Menke, Bluffery and Miller here in the top of the eighth for Houston.
- 2:10:47The 1-0 pitch, Menke takes this one across the letters, a strike called.
- 2:10:52Houston club, the one team in the National League that we have been unable to defeat this season.
- 2:11:01One ball, one strike to Menke.

- 2:11:29Roy Face in him for the first time.
- 2:11:40Face steals, Bluffery way ahead of it, swings and misses for a strike.
- 2:11:52You get your timing thrown off like that too often, you're going to have back trouble.
- 2:11:57Here is a hard hit ball to right field, it's going to clear the wall and bounce off the scoreboard.
- 2:12:02That's a home run for Kirk Bluffery.
- 2:12:05That might have glanced off the scoreboard and gone over to the swimming pool.
- 2:12:11But it ticked the right side of the scoreboard and Bluffery has his third home run of this series.
- 2:12:22Dave, I saw a youngster over in the pool actually run over and get the ball.
- 2:12:26So as you said, it hit over, over that face in right field and took a bounce.
- 2:12:30Now it's bounced over to the pool, I don't know, but I saw a youngster run right across in front of a crowd of people, pick up the ball and head back.
- 2:12:38That is Bluffery's eighth home run of the year.
- 2:12:45So all of the Expos pitchers, all of them, all three that have worked today have been scored on.

- 2:13:11The one-one is down low, ball two, two and one.
- 2:13:17Well, Brett Bluffery has really come on strong since the first of July.
- 2:13:23Starting to hit that long ball for the Astros.
- 2:13:27Here's a foul back into the boxes behind home plate.
- 2:13:31Count us two and two to Norm Miller.
- 2:13:41Second Houston home run, third one of the day.
- 2:13:56Here's the 2-2 pitch.
- 2:13:58Check swing, it's low and inside.
- 2:14:00Try to hold up John Bateman asking the third base umpire, asking the plate umpire, Al Barlich,
- 2:14:05to check with the third base umpire, Andy Olson, about that check swing.
- 2:14:13But it's a ball, three and two the count on Norm Miller.
- 2:14:22The pitch, swung on, high fly ball, shallow right center coming fast as Klein. He's got it.
- 2:14:32Center fielder Ty Klein takes care of that.
- 2:14:35Miller is out of there and the batter will be John Edwards.
- 2:14:40Edwards is two for three.
- 2:14:43Struck out in the second, got a base hit in the fourth, tripled in the sixth.
- 2:14:52Left hand hitter.
- 2:14:54Edwards foul tips the first one.
- 2:14:59Ah, he didn't get a piece of it.
- 2:15:02Decided to go after it, the ball between John Bateman's legs into the backstop.
- 2:15:08I thought he'd foul tipped it.
- 2:15:11But he held up and the pitch was just down low and got away from John. It's ball one.
- 2:15:21With two outs, there's nobody on base.
- 2:15:23Here's the pitch. Edwards swings and misses strike one.
- 2:15:30Houston leading six to two here in the eighth.
- 2:15:39The one one, check swing and this one rolls up the screen.
- 2:15:48One ball, two strikes.
- 2:15:54Between games, Russell, give you a look at all the other games on the baseball scoreboard.
- 2:16:08One and two, the count on Edwards.
- 2:16:12Here's the pitch.
- 2:16:13Swung on, line drive, right field, stop back, can't get it, home run.
- 2:16:21That makes it seven to two.
- 2:16:23Bases giving up three hits, two of them home runs.
- 2:16:26One to Blefrey and now one to John Edwards here.
- 2:16:37Seven to two ball game.
- 2:16:42Good one, get deep.
- 2:16:44The third base wins it.

- 2:16:54Marty Martinez, who's one for three, is the batter.
- 2:16:57Takes one low and in, ball one.
- 2:17:03That's the third Houston home run.
- 2:17:07The one-oh pitch for the strike, one and one to Martinez, left hand hitter.
- 2:17:13That was Edwards' third hit of the day also.
- 2:17:17Pitch is swung on and fouled down to the left side, out of play.
- 2:17:21First row of the box seats just behind the exposed dugout.
- 2:17:25Kevin Collins chased over there and gave it a good run, but could not get to the ball.
- 2:17:33One and two to Martinez.
- 2:17:43The pitch swung on and looped out into shallow left field line going back.
- 2:17:48Mac Jones coming in, he can't get to it.
- 2:17:50That'll be a hit for Martinez.
- 2:17:52Mac Jones came fast and as hard as he could, the ball just out of his reach.
- 2:17:57He gave it a good try.
- 2:18:00Martinez second hit.
- 2:18:06Third hit, fourth hit off Roy Faze.
- 2:18:10The fifteenth hit for Houston and Don Wilson, the pitcher, will be the batter.

- 2:20:01The stretch and the pitch, it's high and outside, ball two, two and one.
- 2:20:08Houston came into this game, just a half game behind Los Angeles.
- 2:20:14Of course Los Angeles involved in that ball game at St. Louis today.
- 2:20:24And St. Louis using a reliever as a starter today, Chuck Taylor against the left-hander, Claude Osteen.
- 2:20:35Here's the 2-1, swung on and missed by Geiger.

- 2:21:31Fans, I'd like to tell you once again about the handy little book that turned out by Keith Rory in Montreal.
- 2:21:37It's called Let's Talk Baseball and it's just jam-packed with all kinds of information on the Montreal Expo's baseball club.
- 2:21:44On professional baseball's background in Montreal, the Dayton Tigers, all back into the 1880s,
- 2:21:51when they had a manager by the name of Charlie Dooley.
- 2:21:53Information such as this leads all the way through the history of the Montreal Royals and AAA baseball,
- 2:21:58that great year in 1946 when Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier
- 2:22:03and became one of the outstanding stars in baseball, leading the Montreal Royals to the International League pennant
- 2:22:09and the Governor's Cup to the World Series Championship.
- 2:22:12That was a fantastic year for baseball in Montreal.
- 2:22:15Well, you'll find all kinds of information like that in this handy booklet, Let's Talk Baseball.
- 2:22:21It may be obtained, just address your envelope to Let's Talk Baseball, Post Office Park, 1387, Station B, Montreal.
- 2:22:30It's free.
- 2:22:34Well, the Expo's have some catching up to do.
- 2:22:37As they trail by five runs, two more innings to go.
- 2:22:41Here in the eighth inning, it'll be Mack Jones and a pinch hitter for Elroy Faith and Kevin Collins.
- 2:22:48Right now, let's take ten seconds for station identification.
- 2:22:51This is the Montreal Expo's baseball radio network.
- 2:22:58Mack Jones is also up the swing in the bottom half of the eighth inning, and all set to describe it, Dave Van Horn.
- 2:23:06Mack Jones over two with a walk.
- 2:23:10Then we'll have Ron, well, Ron Fairley was scheduled, he's been taken out of the ballgame.
- 2:23:18It'll be Jose Herrera.
- 2:23:21It's a bat in that spot. Mack swung and missed. Wilson's first offering.
- 2:23:26Wilson delivers and a strike on Mack, all in two.
- 2:23:39Wilson has now struck out 11 in this ballgame.
- 2:23:50Seven short of the record, the pitch bowled back behind the plate, still all in two.
- 2:24:04So it'd be pretty tough for him to set any kind of a new record today.
- 2:24:18The O2 pitch is high, ball one, one ball, two strikes.
- 2:24:30It would be possible for him to do so, but highly improbable.
- 2:24:37The one, two to Mack bowled back into the screen.
- 2:24:44Here's Wilson's pitch.
- 2:24:48Strike him out. Mack goes down swinging.
- 2:24:53Strike out number 12 for Don Wilson.
- 2:25:01That'll bring Jose Herrera to the plate.
- 2:25:14Herrera will bat for the pitcher Roy Faze, who is inserted in the number five spot.
- 2:25:20Ron Fairley is in the fifth spot.
- 2:25:24Herrera will bat for the pitcher Roy Faze, who is inserted in the number five spot. Ron Fairley's original batting position.
- 2:25:38Herrera right-hand hitter. Bowels the first pitch back, high into the air and out of play behind the plate.
- 2:25:44Strike one. Jose batting, 339 in 21 games. He's got 20 hits and 59 at bats.
- 2:26:06Here's the 0-1 pitch to Herrera. Bowled high into the air, back to the right side, 0-2.
- 2:26:14One of our listeners had mentioned that, thought maybe Bob Gibson had the strikeout record last year, but it's not.
- 2:26:22It's this man out on the mound here, Don Wilson.
- 2:26:26Gibson in the first game of the World Series, which is not included in the National League regular season record books.
- 2:26:33It's of course a World Series record book that the series figures are kept in.
- 2:26:39Gibson in the first game of the series last year against Detroit, struck out 17.
- 2:26:47Pitch is high and away from Jose, ball one, one ball, two strikes.
- 2:26:51But Don Wilson fanned 18 Cincinnati Reds on July 14th last year.
- 2:27:05The pitch to Jose, swung on, ground ball over to Menke. He throws to Bluffery at first and Herrera's out.
- 2:27:12Two away. That'll bring Kevin Collins to the plate.
- 2:27:16Kevin's one for three, got a base hit his first time up and struck out twice.
- 2:27:23The X-Bowl have five hits off Mr. Wilson, none since the fourth.
- 2:27:36The first pitch to Collins, a strike called.
- 2:27:44The only extra base hit among the five, Bateman's home run in the fourth.
- 2:27:51Collins fouls one out of play, third base side.
- 2:27:59All-in-two to Kevin.
- 2:28:03In our second game, Howie Reed, former Astro, will be going against Larry Dierker.
- 2:28:11Swing and a high pop-up, left side of the infield, Menke coming in.
- 2:28:16Now the third baseman, Martinez, makes the catch.
- 2:28:20And that's it. The X-Bows are down one, two, three, with nothing across.
- 2:28:25And at the end of eight innings here at Jerry Park, it's Houston 7, Montreal 2.
- 2:28:32And you want to know what ideal way to spend a day in Montreal?
- 2:28:35Well, this is meant for people, especially outside the Montreal area,
- 2:28:39living along the X-Bowl baseball network.
- 2:28:42An ideal way would be to head to Montreal early, spend the day down at Man in His World,
- 2:28:47the great international exhibition being held for the third strike here.
- 2:28:51Of course, it was X-Bowl 67 in its opening year, Man in His World last year,
- 2:28:55and Man in His World again this year.
- 2:28:57It's just loaded with all kinds of new entertainment, 800 acres of wonders,
- 2:29:0175 pavilions, restaurants, beer gardens, fun and entertainment unlimited.
- 2:29:07All right, so you come to Montreal and spend the day at Man in His World.
- 2:29:11Pick out a fine eating place in old Montreal.
- 2:29:15Enjoy a fine meal.
- 2:29:17And then head out to Jerry Park to see the X-Bowls in action against the National League.
- 2:29:24And tomorrow night we'll see one of the great teams, the Atlanta Braves,
- 2:29:28leaders of the Western Division, right here against our X-Bowls at Jerry Park.
- 2:29:35Dick Routets is now pitching for the X-Bowls,
- 2:29:38coming on a pitch to Houston in the top half of the ninth inning.
- 2:29:43Routets on the hill for the X-Bowls.
- 2:29:46And the first man he'll face will be second baseman Joe Morgan,
- 2:29:50followed by Jimmy Wynn and Dennis Mink.
- 2:29:56Roy Bass went two innings, gave up two runs, four hits,
- 2:30:02struck out one, and now Dick Routets to pitch the ninth here.
- 2:30:12He'll face Morgan Wynn and Mink.
- 2:30:16Yeah, Morgan's been something else today.
- 2:30:19He's three for three with a walk, has scored two runs, has a stolen base,
- 2:30:26having a perfect afternoon so far.
- 2:30:29The pitch to Morgan is swung on, here's a line drive, caught by Gary Sutherland.
- 2:30:35Sutherland timed his leap perfectly, right on the edge of the grass,
- 2:30:40and brought it down to get Morgan out for the first time.
- 2:30:47Jim Wynn, who's two for four, will be the batter.
- 2:30:51Right hand hitter, and then Mink.
- 2:30:58He's up for the 19th time, all in relief.
- 2:31:07Has an 0-2 record.
- 2:31:10First pitch low for a ball to win.
- 2:31:14Routets, big right hander.
- 2:31:19Strike call with a fastball, one and one.
- 2:31:31Here's the pitch.
- 2:31:33Inside, ball two, two and one.
- 2:31:38You know, Routets established a major league record for the most games
- 2:31:41finished in a season back in 1964 when he finished
- 2:31:4567 games with the Boston Red Sox.
- 2:31:52Pitch is outside to win ball three.
- 2:31:55He also set an American League record for the most wins in relief for one season.
- 2:31:59That was in 64 with 16 victories.
- 2:32:05And he pitched 157 innings that season in relief, which was a record in the American League.
- 2:32:09Pitch is high to win, he is on.
- 2:32:12So wind draws a walk, Routets giving him the free ticket,
- 2:32:17and that will bring Dennis Menke to the plate. Menke is two for four.
- 2:32:21Menke.
- 2:32:41The pitch to Menke, fouled out of play to our right.
- 2:32:45Oh and one, there's one out, win at first, in field a double play depth.
- 2:32:49Houston leading 7-2 here in the ninth.
- 2:33:05Routets at the belt and the pitch to Menke is high and inside.
- 2:33:10Ball and one strike.
- 2:33:15Menke got his hits off the Expos starter Bill Stoneman.
- 2:33:19Got a base hit in the third, one in the fifth each time driving in a run.
- 2:33:29So one-one to Menke, high and away, ball two.
- 2:33:49Wynn taking his lead from first base.
- 2:33:52There he goes, pitch is swung on, fly ball right field, stop coming in, he's got it.
- 2:33:57He's going to rifle the first base, but Wynn gets back ahead of the throw.
- 2:34:02Just did get back, nice throw by Rusty Stobb as Menke flies out to right.
- 2:34:09Two away, the batter will be Kurt Flembrey who in his last trip to the plate,
- 2:34:13slammed a home run to right field that just tipped the top right corner of the scoreboard
- 2:34:19and went over into the swimming pool here in Jerry Park,
- 2:34:28which is a large municipal park in which Jerry Stadium actually is located.
- 2:34:35Here's a bouncing ball to the right side, subtle and deep, up with it, throws to first base,
- 2:34:39that's all for Flembrey and Houston's throwing the night.
- 2:34:43No runs, no hits, no errors, and one left to score the end of 8 1⁄2, Houston 7, Expos 2.
- 2:34:52Well the Expos will really have to come on like gangbusters to tie up this ballgame
- 2:34:57as they trail by five runs going into the bottom half of the ninth inning
- 2:35:01and we'll be looking at the bottom third of the Expo order, John Bateman.
- 2:35:05I think John has had a home run in this ballgame.
- 2:35:07One of the five hits picked up by the Expos off Don Wilson who has been real stingy this afternoon.
- 2:35:14Bateman will be followed by Bobby Wine and Bob Bailey.
- 2:35:19Then we'll go to the top of the order of the Expos and get anything going
- 2:35:23and at least pass the first three batters.
- 2:35:25This has been a tremendous ballgame turned in by Don Wilson.
- 2:35:29He has struck out 12 men in the game this afternoon.
- 2:35:32This is one of the finest pitching performances we have seen this year here at Jolly Park in Montreal.
- 2:35:38Always in control and Wilson has never been in trouble this afternoon.
- 2:35:44He's been in complete control all afternoon.
- 2:35:47He had a couple of runners on, runners in first and third in the third inning,
- 2:35:50but he struck out Kevin Collins to get out of the jam.
- 2:35:54So here we go.
- 2:35:56Bottom half of the ninth inning, the last chance for the Expos.
- 2:35:59They trail by five runs.
- 2:36:01First man up for Montreal will be John Bateman who hit his sixth home run of the year
- 2:36:06in the fourth inning into Jonesville.
- 2:36:16Well, Wilson has been super this afternoon.
- 2:36:23Facing the bottom third of the order for the fourth time today,
- 2:36:28Wilson has given up two hits in that bottom third of the order.
- 2:36:31Bateman's home run and winds in field hit.
- 2:36:35John takes a strike from Wilson.
- 2:36:370-1.
- 2:36:40Pitch cut on.
- 2:36:41Base hit center field.
- 2:36:44Bateman's second hit of the day.
- 2:36:49Hit number six for the Expos.
- 2:36:53So they're not going to roll over and die here.
- 2:36:55Ron Brand is going to pinch hit for Bobby Wine.
- 2:37:06Brand, very popular, gets a nice hand as he's introduced.
- 2:37:12Ron is batting 267.
- 2:37:18Got a note here from Ron too that I want to read in a moment.
- 2:37:21Here's the pitch.
- 2:37:23Pitch cut on.
- 2:37:25Now high pop-up down the right field line.
- 2:37:27Miller coming over fast.
- 2:37:29Foul territory.
- 2:37:30He makes the catch.
- 2:37:32So Brand is out, fouling out.
- 2:37:35Way down the right field line to Norm Miller.
- 2:37:40One away.
- 2:37:41Bateman holding first.
- 2:37:45Ron wanted us to pass along a get-well message to a young friend of his,
- 2:37:52Ross Corcoran.
- 2:37:56Young Ross was injured in an automobile accident.
- 2:37:59He was hit by a car in Pierre Fon.
- 2:38:01He's recovering now and we understand coming along well.
- 2:38:04That's near Ron Brand's home.
- 2:38:06And Ron wanted us to say hello to Ross and wish him a speedy recovery.
- 2:38:12So we do exactly that.
- 2:38:14Ross, if you're listening, we hope all is going well and we hope to see you at the ballpark soon.
- 2:38:19Here's Bob Bailey.
- 2:38:20Bob swings and fouls the first pitch back into the screen behind the blight.
- 2:38:24Strike one.
- 2:38:27Bob batting in that number nine spot.
- 2:38:30Struck out in the sixth when he came on as a pinch hitter and stayed in the game.
- 2:38:45One out and one on.
- 2:38:53Wilson deals.
- 2:38:54It's high and inside to Bob.
- 2:38:57The double header.
- 2:38:59Houston leading seven to two here in the ninth.
- 2:39:02The pitch to Bailey swung out.
- 2:39:03This foul is slammed out into center field.
- 2:39:05A base hit for Bob.
- 2:39:07John Bateman holds up a second base.
- 2:39:09Bailey's on.
- 2:39:12Seventh hit for the X-Bow.
- 2:39:15And we go to the top of the order.
- 2:39:17Ty Klein will be the batter.
- 2:39:22Gary Sutherland moving into the on-deck search.
- 2:39:29Klein is due.
- 2:39:30Ty is 0 for 4.
- 2:39:32Saw that on strike.
- 2:39:33Slide out and grounded out twice.
- 2:39:41Wilson looks at his lead runner Bateman.
- 2:39:43The pitch to Ty is outside.
- 2:39:45Ball one.
- 2:39:47We've got activity in the Houston bullpen.
- 2:39:54Tom Griffin.
- 2:39:58That's not Griffin.
- 2:40:01Let me double check that again.
- 2:40:03Here's a foul back to the left side.
- 2:40:06I believe that's flashing game.
- 2:40:08Left-hander.
- 2:40:11It is.
- 2:40:12One and one the count on Ty Klein.
- 2:40:23Runners are at first and second.
- 2:40:26The pitch to Ty.
- 2:40:28Swing and a foul tip at the plate.
- 2:40:29That's off Klein's ankle.
- 2:40:38Klein is taking a stroll around home plate.
- 2:40:42Trying to shake that off.
- 2:40:43That happened to Ron Fairley in the sixth inning, fifth inning.
- 2:40:52And Ron suffered a bruise just above instep on his right foot.
- 2:41:01Dr. Broderick has told us that Ron will be okay.
- 2:41:08Wilson ready for the 1-2 to Klein.
- 2:41:10Here comes.
- 2:41:11It's fouled back to the screen.
- 2:41:14So the count remains a ball and two strikes.
- 2:41:18Gary Sutherland on deck.
- 2:41:19One out.
- 2:41:20The Expos would love to get a ninth inning rally going.
- 2:41:28They're down by five runs.
- 2:41:36Good crowd here today.
- 2:41:40The 1-2 from Wilson.
- 2:41:42Looked out, a little tight.
- 2:41:44Ty leaning back.
- 2:41:46Even the count of two balls and two strikes.
- 2:41:53See the fans are playing against the attendance again today, aren't they?
- 2:41:59We'll have that to talk about a little bit later on in the second game.
- 2:42:02Pitch is high.
- 2:42:05Ball three, three and two to Ty Klein.
- 2:42:18Wilson's in danger of loading the bases.
- 2:42:20The pitch to Ty.
- 2:42:22Ty outside.
- 2:42:23Ball four is on.
- 2:42:26The bases are loaded.
- 2:42:29Bateman goes to third.
- 2:42:33Bailey, the second, flying on at first.
- 2:42:38And Harry Walker.
- 2:42:41I couldn't see who came out.
- 2:42:42Was it Harry?
- 2:42:44No, it was, nobody's come out.
- 2:42:47Now, coming out of the dugout is Jim Owens, the Houston pitching coach.
- 2:42:54Owens is out to the mound to talk to Don Wilson.
- 2:42:57John Bleffrey is over there along with Joe Morgan and the catcher John Edwards.
- 2:43:07Bleffrey and Morgan just getting their singles straight.
- 2:43:13And they're checking things out with shortstop Dennis Mendte.
- 2:43:19With one out, the bases are loaded and Gary Sutherland's the batter.
- 2:43:25It's one for four.
- 2:43:30First pitch is a called strike, all in one.
- 2:43:44Wilson rocks into motion.
- 2:43:46His pitch to Gary swung on and missed.
- 2:43:49Strike two, he tried to hold up and went around.
- 2:43:58Nothing can do to Gary.
- 2:44:01Rusty Stop is on deck.
- 2:44:08The pitch, falling inside, ball one.
- 2:44:17Pavement of third, Bailey at second, climb the runner at first.
- 2:44:21They're loaded here with only one out in the night.
- 2:44:24The pitch to Gary, swung on and fouled, bounced off to the left side behind the plate.
- 2:44:32Still one and two.
- 2:44:34And what a beautiful afternoon it's been here in Montreal with this doubleheader.
- 2:44:38This is the first game.
- 2:44:40Howie Reed and Larry Dirk will face off in the second game.
- 2:44:53Here's the pitch.
- 2:44:54Gary swings and hits one foul out of play, way down to the right.
- 2:45:01Still one and two.
- 2:45:12Blasting game has been joined by Fred Gladding, a right-hander, down in the Houston bullpen.
- 2:45:21Here's Wilson's pitch.
- 2:45:23Ground ball to the right side.
- 2:45:24Morgan will go to first base for one out and a run scored.
- 2:45:30Gary Sutherland grounds out but picks up an RBI as John Bateman crosses the plate.
- 2:45:38Ty Klein moves to second and Bob Bailey to third.
- 2:45:42That makes it a seven and three ball game.
- 2:45:45And Rusty Stop will be the batter now with runners at first as second and third.
- 2:45:56Wilson deals, stop, fouls it back to the screen.
- 2:46:00Strike one.
- 2:46:02There's two outs.
- 2:46:16Getting ready for the pitch.
- 2:46:18It's in for a strike called on Rusty.
- 2:46:20He looked at that second offering, thought it was a little high.
- 2:46:25Hole and two, the count.
- 2:46:37Here it comes.
- 2:46:39It's fouled back, out of play behind the plate, coming back onto the screen.
- 2:46:56So with two outs, we've still got a chance to do something here against Wilson.
- 2:47:00The count, oh and two, on stop.
- 2:47:01The pitch.
- 2:47:02That's ball struck him out. Rusty down swinging for the fourth time.
- 2:47:09That is the ball game.
- 2:47:11Wilson logs 13 strikeouts here and wins it seven to three.
- 2:47:17In the ninth, one run, two hits, no errors, two left.
- 2:47:22The final score, Houston seven, Montreal three and I'll have the totals in a minute.
- 2:47:28Well, fans, there'll be a short intermission here as the grounds crew gets the field ready,
- 2:47:34the infield ready for the start of the second game between the X-Bow and the Astros.
- 2:47:39The X-Bow has yet to beat the Houston Astros this year.
- 2:47:42They've lost every ball game both here in Montreal the earlier series.
- 2:47:46They've dropped right now three in a row against them in this present series.
- 2:47:51And of course, they have a series coming up next weekend under the big dome in Houston.
- 2:47:56So the Astros have held the X-Bows off the win column in meetings this year.
- 2:48:02However, there is a second game coming up and there's always, of course, a first time.
- 2:48:06But so far this year Houston certainly have a Montreal number.
- 2:48:11Well, for the X-Bows in the second game we'll be looking at how we read in the second game.
- 2:48:18We'll be pitching for Montreal, a veteran right-hander, up and down several times in Major League Baseball,
- 2:48:23one time with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
- 2:48:26He also played for the Houston Ball Club.
- 2:48:30Well, the final score, 7-3 for Houston over the Montreal X-Bows.
- 2:48:36Here with a quick wrap-up on what happened, Dave Van Horn.
- 2:48:40Okay, Russ, the line score in the game, Houston 7 runs, 15 hits, 1 error.
- 2:48:45Montreal 3 runs, 7 hits and 2 errors.
- 2:48:483 home runs in the game. John Bateman hit one to the X-Bows in the fourth, nobody on.
- 2:48:54For Houston, Norm Miller connected to right center in the fourth.
- 2:48:58Kurt Fleffrey and John Edwards both had home runs in the eighth. They were all solo home runs.
- 2:49:047-3 Houston over the X-Bows in the first game of the double header.
- 2:49:07I'll have more on the wrap-up in one minute.
