Four Practical Steps To Make A Major Pentatonic Solo Musical · The Steve Stine Podcast

• 0:35
Steve: Hey, Steve Stein from Guitar Zoom here.
• 0:37
Steve: Thank you so much for joining me.
• 0:38
Steve: Today we're going to be looking at a track in the key of A major, and we're going to talk a little bit about the four steps to trying to make your major key soloing sound a little more authentic.
• 0:49
Steve: Feel a little more real, sound a little more real.
• 0:51
Steve: So what we're going to do is we're going to start off by just listening to the track to get used to what this sounds like.
• 0:56
Steve: We're going to talk about that a little bit.
• 0:57
Steve: And then we're going to start applying some of this to our fretboard in a very simple way.
• 1:00
Steve: And then we'll just start building it from there.
• 1:02
Steve: So let's take a listen to this.
• 1:16
  Steve: All right.
• 1:17
Steve: So what we're listening to right there, the chord progression is going A major, C sharp minor, D major, and E major.
• 1:25
Steve: Now that information is very important further down the line.
• 1:29
Steve: But to begin, it's okay if we don't know all of that right off right off the bat when we start learning how to do this.
• 1:37
Steve: But please understand that those four chords all fit in the key of A major.
• 1:42
  Steve: We call it diatonic.
• 1:43
Steve: All the chords fit in the key.
• 1:45
Steve: Everybody's happy, and it all works together.
• 1:48
Steve: The reason I'm telling you that is because as we start applying this to the guitar, once we start playing this pentatonic scale, everything's gonna fit just fine.
• 1:55
  Steve: Okay.
• 1:57
Steve: But this is initial information that I would want to know if I was jamming with a band or whatever it might be or just a backing track is what key is it in and what chords are they?
• 2:07
Steve: And do all the chords actually fit in that key?
• 2:10
Steve: Now you might not not have all that information right away.
• 2:13
Steve: It might take you a little while to learn that, but it's important to know.
• 2:16
Steve: The second step is to know what the rhythm is, what the subdivision opportunities are.
• 2:21
Steve: Let me show you what I mean.
• 2:23
Steve: If I start this again, this is my quarter note.
• 2:30
Steve: Now, when I solo, I'm not soloing based on this quarter note.
• 2:34
Steve: I'm thinking more about the eighth note and the sixteenth.
• 2:44
Steve: I'm gonna think more about those things.
• 2:46
Steve: Now, again, we can play slower, we can play faster, but we do have to be connected to the rhythm in some capacity.
• 2:53
Steve: So what I want to do, I'm gonna put all of this together, but let's now apply this to our fretboard.
• 2:58
Steve: So we're in the key of A major, we're looking for A major pentatonic.
• 3:02
Steve: Now, the typical position that most people would go to if you told them to play A major pentatonic is they'd go to A minor pentatonic right here.
• 3:10
Steve: And then they would move down one, two, three frets, and they would play A major pentatonic right here.
• 3:18
Steve: And there is nothing wrong with that.
• 3:20
Steve: And again, if you don't know what that is, I have other videos that we can, you know, you can learn about that sort of thing.
• 3:26
Steve: But I don't want to do that one right now because some of you have already done that before.
• 3:30
Steve: What I want to do is find a different position to work with because it might feel a little more interesting to me, it might be a little more creative to me because it's something I haven't done as much.
• 3:40
Steve: So here's what I want you to work with as an assignment off of this video.
• 3:44
Steve: We're gonna go to A major here, the A major six string bar chord.
• 3:47
Steve: And what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna work on the position right above that.
• 3:50
Steve: So I'm gonna go here to the seventh fret of the six string, and I'm gonna play seven nine, seven, nine, seven, nine, so three seven nines, six, nine, seven, ten, seven, nine.
• 4:04
Steve: Okay, that's an A major pentatonic scale.
• 4:06
Steve: It just might look a little different than you're used to.
• 4:14
Steve: Now, within that A major pentatonic structure, we want to learn where, at the very least, where the A's are.
• 4:22
Steve: Now, eventually we want to learn all the notes and we want to connect them to the chords and all that sort of thing, but we're not there yet.
• 4:28
Steve: We're not talking about any of that yet.
• 4:30
Steve: But at the very least, we want to know where the A's are.
• 4:32
Steve: So let's get back in there again.
• 4:34
Steve: We have seven, nine, seven, nine, seven.
• 4:37
Steve: That seven right there on the fourth string is an A.
• 4:42
Steve: So that's a good target to hit.
• 4:47
Steve: That we can go to that note.
• 4:50
  Steve: Okay?
• 4:51
  Steve: Now let's keep going.
• 4:52
Steve: We have seven, nine on the fourth string, then we have six, nine, then we have seven, ten.
• 4:56
Steve: Now this ten on the second string is also an A.
• 5:01
Steve: That's another place we can go.
• 5:04
Steve: Whether you're using your third finger or your pinky, don't really worry about that kind of thing.
• 5:09
Steve: Again, in the real world, sometimes we use certain fingers because it feels more comfortable.
• 5:14
Steve: Those things change in the real world.
• 5:16
Steve: But but just be aware of the shape and now be aware of where those A's are.
• 5:26
  Steve: Okay?
• 5:27
Steve: So now what I want to do is I want to go back to the track and I want to start thinking about those eighth notes and those sixteenth notes in my head.
• 5:35
Steve: Bump bump bump bump bump bump bump up.
• 5:41
Steve: And what I want to start doing is using this particular shape, I want to start moving around, trying to get comfortable with meandering through this shape in different ways using eighth notes and or sixteenth notes.
• 5:54
Steve: Now, obviously, sixteenth notes are a little bit harder to play.
• 5:57
Steve: So I always tell people, you know, focus on your eighth notes as being kind of your primary thing.
• 6:02
Steve: And when you want 16th notes, if you're skilled enough, you can pick all your 16th notes whenever you want them.
• 6:08
Steve: But if that's hard for you, you could always just simply do a hammer on or a pull-off.
• 6:12
Steve: Let me show you what I mean.
• 6:13
Steve: So if I start this again and I start playing some eighth notes, and I want a sixteenth, I can simply do a pull off or a hammer on the bottom.
• 6:58
Steve: So that's the general idea.
• 7:00
Steve: Step one is get comfortable with that position and start meandering through it.
• 7:05
Steve: Start moving around through it using your eighth notes andor your sixteenth notes.
• 7:12
Steve: And when you can, start trying to kind of target that A a little bit.
• 7:16
  Steve: That's step one.
• 7:17
Steve: Now you could stop watching this video and just work on that for a while, which would be great.
• 7:22
  Steve: Okay?
• 7:23
Steve: Now, step two is what we're gonna do is we're gonna start, if we can, we're gonna start trying to see some of the pentatonic structures that exist outside of that first position.
• 7:33
Steve: Okay, that's the next thing.
• 7:35
Steve: It's just trying to get comfortable with where else we could go.
• 7:38
Steve: Now, if you're not very comfortable with the positions around your guitar, around this position we're in right now, that's gonna take some practice.
• 7:45
Steve: I'm not asking to be perfect at it or anything like that.
• 7:47
Steve: I'm just saying when you get somewhere as you're playing through this, maybe moving up or down would be another option for you to make this a little more interesting.
• 8:07
Steve: Let me show you again what I mean.
• 8:08
Steve: So I'm gonna start the same thing again.
• 8:52
Steve: We're not there yet, but it's it's it's another avenue of practice to start getting used to some things that exist around you to get used to some of the other positions or other notes that we can go down to or we can go up to from this position.
• 9:15
  Steve: It takes time.
• 9:16
Steve: If you're not ready with the first thing we talked about, obviously this isn't gonna really help you, it's gonna make it more difficult.
• 9:22
Steve: So that's the next thing to start working on.
• 9:25
Steve: Maybe you spend a week or two just working on the first part of what we're talking about, and then maybe you spend a week or two trying to get more comfortable with this.
• 9:32
Steve: And this practice then feeds some of the other things that you're working on in your daily practice routine.
• 9:38
Steve: Hey, I need to learn a little bit more about that next position, or I need to learn a little bit more about that last one, or I need to practice moving back and forth between these a little bit more.
• 9:47
Steve: What should happen in your practice is as you learn something that's valuable to you that you find value in, as you continue to work with it, it starts telling you what you're struggling with, what you're good at, what you're what you're not so good at.
• 9:59
Steve: And those things that you're not so good at are the things that you implement into your practice routine.
• 10:04
Steve: The third thing we're gonna do is we're gonna move into the diatonic realm.
• 10:10
Steve: And this is completely different, but maybe you're already here, and I want I want to show you this.
• 10:14
Steve: So if I was playing an A major and I went to this pentatonic position right here.
• 10:22
Steve: Now, instead of just playing that pentatonic structure, I want you to add a couple of notes to this.
• 10:26
Steve: On the first string, I want you to go from seven to nine, but we're gonna add in the note ten.
• 10:34
Steve: And on this string, instead of just playing seven to ten, we're gonna add in the note nine.
• 10:42
Steve: And what's great about adding in these notes into the pentatonic structure is you wind up getting these half steps.
• 10:50
Steve: When you were playing pentatonic, pentatonic has no half steps, and so you're missing a real great opportunity for some melody, some beautiful kind of sounds like that.
• 11:03
Steve: So now on the next string here, we normally would have six to nine.
• 11:06
Steve: Well, now we have a seven.
• 11:13
Steve: Now I can always drop back into the pentatonic structure any old time, but I would have these other notes available to me.
• 11:19
  Steve: So I've got 10, 9, 7, 10, 9, 7, 9, 7, 6, and 9.
• 11:27
Steve: Here we had 9, 7.
• 11:29
Steve: We can add a 6 here too.
• 11:31
Steve: Now again, I don't want to overwhelm you.
• 11:33
Steve: I just want you to think about the difference between the pentatonic and this new thing that we're doing, these extended or added notes that we're adding.
• 11:40
Steve: Always be able to drop back into the pentatonic, but then be able to fall into these new notes.
• 11:49
Steve: What a trap that a lot of guitar players uh encounter is that once they start learning how to do the diatonic scales, so we call it, okay, is that they play all those notes all the time.
• 11:59
Steve: What's a really great tactic to use is when you're in pentatonic and you add something, you add one of these notes to your pentatonic, it sounds way more colorful.
• 12:09
Steve: If I just do this all the time, it just it all sounds the same.
• 12:14
Steve: But if I play pentatonically, and then I add that note in, it adds this color.
• 12:25
  Steve: It sounds really beautiful.
• 12:30
Steve: Okay, so that's another thing.
• 12:32
Steve: So let's take a look at that a little bit, what that might sound like.
• 12:34
Steve: Again, I'm not I'm not doing anything complicated, I'm just exploring at this point.
• 13:36
Steve: So elevating it just a little bit.
• 13:38
  Steve: Okay?
• 13:39
Steve: Now the last thing that we can do, and I'm actually gonna give you one more bonus one now that I think about it.
• 13:43
Steve: So the last one we're gonna do is we're gonna start trying to target notes for each one of the chords.
• 13:51
Steve: Now, again, you don't have to do this all the time, but just follow this.
• 13:54
Steve: So if I was playing over an A major chord, I might want to go to the A.
• 14:00
Steve: Now, if I knew anything about my theory and I know that the notes of an A major chord are A, C sharp, and E, and I know where those notes are on the guitar, I can try and correlate that.
• 14:09
Steve: I can follow those chords around.
• 14:11
Steve: A lot of people don't know that.
• 14:12
Steve: They don't know all their theory yet.
• 14:14
Steve: They don't know how to do that yet.
• 14:15
Steve: Or they don't know where the notes are on the guitar.
• 14:17
  Steve: It's okay.
• 14:19
Steve: Number one, you could learn that, but the other thing that you can do is you can learn to visualize the shape of the chord that you want relative to the position that you're in.
• 14:28
Steve: What I mean is if I can see this A major chord sitting right here, I can see it's five, seven, seven, six, five, five.
• 14:37
Steve: So when I'm playing in this pentatonic or diatonic structure, if I drop down to that five, it's gonna fit.
• 14:45
Steve: If I go to this six, it's gonna fit.
• 14:52
Steve: Obviously, that's the A, that would fit.
• 14:55
Steve: If I drop down to this seven, it's gonna fit.
• 14:58
Steve: So you may not know which one is the root or the third or the fifth.
• 15:01
Steve: You might not be that far in your journey, but you can visualize the pentatonic structure that you're playing in, and you can visualize the chord sim in a relative space to where your pentatonic structure is.
• 15:11
Steve: If you're looking at A way down here, it's too far away from where you are.
• 15:14
Steve: But if you can see this A sitting right here, you could kind of try and target something over that A chord when it's being played.
• 15:23
Steve: Then the C sharp minor comes up.
• 15:25
Steve: Okay, well, it might see C sharp minor right here, which is four, six, six, five, four.
• 15:32
Steve: So again, we could decide, oh, I want to go to that or or to that or to that, or I might see C sharp minor sitting up here.
• 15:43
Steve: And then I think, okay, so I've got uh nine, eleven, eleven, nine, nine, nine.
• 15:48
Steve: So now I've got these nines here, but I could go, I could go to something to do with that.
• 15:55
Steve: Okay, so you're targeting notes, and then you've got your D, those sevens it'd be great.
• 16:04
Steve: You've got your E, those nines it'd be great.
• 16:06
Steve: So now I'm just gonna do a little bit of that so you can hear what I mean.
• 16:10
Steve: So here comes the A.
• 16:12
Steve: So I'm gonna go here, comes C sharp minor, here comes D.
• 16:21
Steve: Here comes D, E, sorry.
• 16:28
  Steve: C sharp minor, D, E.
• 16:42
Steve: So there's so many cool things that you can explore just within these four steps that we've done.
• 16:48
Steve: Now, the bonus what I want to give you is bending, vibrato, hammer-ons, pull-offs, slides, what I like to call vocal tools, utilizing these things in your playing.
• 16:59
Steve: Again, you can do it in any one of these steps.
• 17:02
Steve: You can explore these things.
• 17:03
Steve: So you don't have to do all of this at the same time.
• 17:06
Steve: The point of the practice is isolate each one of these things and practice them and see what comes natural for you.
• 17:12
Steve: So if I start taking now and adding some bends, just different places, or maybe a vibrato somewhere, or a slide.
• 18:03
Steve: So I d again, uh don't don't just watch this and then go, oh, that was interesting, and I should try something.
• 18:11
Steve: If there's something in here that's valuable for you, practice just that thing.
• 18:16
Steve: Don't feel like you have to do all of this.
• 18:17
Steve: Just start with something and start building it.
• 18:20
Steve: Because the the the trick to really changing your play is absorption.
• 18:26
  Steve: It's automation.
• 18:28
Steve: It's not having experience something.
• 18:31
Steve: Oh, I I remember hearing about that, or I remember doing that a long time ago.
• 18:34
Steve: You can't use that when you're nervous, you can't use that when you're jamming with somebody.
• 18:38
  Steve: You gotta build automation.
• 18:40
Steve: Whatever it is that you're trying to do, you gotta get to a place where you're not even thinking about it anymore.
• 18:44
Steve: You're just traveling or you're just connecting or whatever it might be, making you know, connections like this fly wants to.
• 18:50
  Steve: Um just that.
• 18:52
Steve: That's what you need to do.
• 18:53
Steve: So if you if this is where you are, good luck with this, and and I hope you have success with this.
• 18:58
Steve: If you do feel like you need more help, you can always reach out to us.
