- 0:06Mike Marrs: From the Texas Gulf Coast, welcome to End Wheel Time Cars, Places, and People.
- 0:12Mike Marrs: Coming up in this episode, we're going to be talking with Bill Z lag and Neil Jones about the upcoming Heroes and Hot Rods Veterans Weekend event up in Bass Trop.
- 0:23Mike Marrs: Thanks for joining us.
- 0:24Mike Marrs: I'm Michael Mars.
- 0:25Mike Marrs: So let's run over to Bass Drop and catch up with Bill and Neil.
- 0:29Mike Marrs: Bill Zlag and Neil Jones.
- 0:31Mike Marrs: How are you, gentlemen?
- 0:32Mike Marrs: Okay.
- 0:33Mike Marrs: How are you doing, Michael?
- 0:34Mike Marrs: I'm doing well.
- 0:35Mike Marrs: The sun is shining and all is good.
- 0:37Mike Marrs: So I'm really excited to hear more about how the car show is shaping up for Veterans Weekend.
- 0:42Mike Marrs: I mean, it's a it's a big weekend, there's a lot of different things going on with the heroes and hot rods.
- 0:46Mike Marrs: So, uh, how about an update on how the show is shaping up?
- 0:50SPEAKER_02: Okay, our uh registration is full.
- 0:52SPEAKER_02: We have uh 400 cars committed uh to coming on Saturday, and you know, we're looking for a good turnout and a nice day.
- 1:01SPEAKER_03: Lots of activities for spectators because so just because the registrations are full doesn't mean you can't have an enjoyable day if you like cars and lots of other attractions that we have in beautiful downtown Bass Drop.
- 1:13Mike Marrs: Absolutely.
- 1:14Mike Marrs: I mean, 400 cars, most car shows, one-day type car shows, you know, 100, 150, a good-sized car show's got two.
- 1:21Mike Marrs: But you're talking about 400 cars around the square there in downtown Bass Drop.
- 1:26Mike Marrs: There's plenty of stuff to see from the car show.
- 1:29Mike Marrs: So I'm I'm guessing small town bass drop forever been since I've been there, but I'm guessing around the square there's a lot of other things going on.
- 1:37SPEAKER_02: Uh yes, we have lots of uh boutiques and businesses, we have a lot of vendors that are uh coming to our show to uh you know uh display their wares and stuff.
- 1:46SPEAKER_02: But um, yeah, we have record shops, we have distilleries, uh, we have a lot of good restaurants, uh, we have a um um a smoke shop that people seem to like, and uh a lot of uh specialty coffees and you know items like that.
- 2:01SPEAKER_03: And behind a behind the uh we have a famous bridge in Bassrop that's kind of an iconic bridge, and that's actually in our logo.
- 2:08SPEAKER_03: Uh, but there's a really nice uh restaurant called Neighbors that's kind of on on the river, so you can enjoy a nice meal with a view of the bridge and river.
- 2:18SPEAKER_03: Uh, and there are many, many restaurants, even though it's only about a four or five square block area, there's at least, I would say, 25 restaurants and several food trucks that are not really part of the show itself, but they're only a half a block from from Main Street.
- 2:34Mike Marrs: Okay, I got one of the flyers here up on the screen, and there's actually a QR code on there if somebody wants to grab it and get some more information.
- 2:40Mike Marrs: And uh it's got a couple of nice pictures on it, but it kind of gives you the idea that there's a lot more in downtown Bassdrop than 400 beautiful cars to go look at.
- 2:48Mike Marrs: Because I was thinking about it like my wife, she's been going to car shows for almost 40 years.
- 2:54Mike Marrs: And back when I was doing freelance, it was every weekend.
- 2:57Mike Marrs: I kind of burned her out on it, you know.
- 2:59Mike Marrs: So I generally have to have something else for her to do along the way.
- 3:03Mike Marrs: So stepping into a shop, you know, while I'm looking at a 67 GTO or whatever, you know, she can kind of do a little shopping that makes it out nice and makes for a nice weekend, a lot smoother day, at least from my perspective.
- 3:15SPEAKER_02: Uh yes, this is uh the biggest day of the year, we've been told, uh, from the businesses in the area.
- 3:20SPEAKER_02: So we help generate a lot of uh interest for the community when people come out and tour the downtown area.
- 3:27SPEAKER_03: Yeah, there's several.
- 3:28SPEAKER_03: Uh there's a there's a new vintage store that has vintage articles, and there's other stores.
- 3:34SPEAKER_03: There's I would say at least uh four or five women's clothing and some men's clothing boutiques.
- 3:42SPEAKER_03: There's a couple of little storefronts that have little vendors inside, you know, uh plenty of places to eat, like I said before.
- 3:50SPEAKER_03: Uh, and then uh another big attraction is the museum, uh the Bastrop County Museum Historical Society, and it's uh full of lots of information.
- 4:01SPEAKER_03: Uh, we know there were some bad fires in 2011 that we had here in Bastrop uh County and Bastrop itself, and had 1,400 homes completely destroyed.
- 4:10SPEAKER_03: So there's some historical information about the coal mining that used to take place, the fire, as I just mentioned.
- 4:17SPEAKER_03: And there's a really a great uh display about Camp Swift, which is still an active uh military installation.
- 4:26SPEAKER_03: I think it's the National Guard that's there.
- 4:28SPEAKER_03: But in the in the World War II era, uh Camp Swift was one of the major training grounds for World War II soldiers, and it has lots of information of how the the Bastropians, as they're called, welcomed all these soldiers, uh, had lots of activities.
- 4:46SPEAKER_03: There's an opera house downtown.
- 4:48SPEAKER_03: That's something that somebody could do after the show because they or after the car show, because they have some nice plays over there, musicals.
- 4:57SPEAKER_03: I'm not sure what's running right now.
- 4:59SPEAKER_03: So there's just a wealth of information.
- 5:01SPEAKER_03: That museum itself is worth coming to Bass Drop for.
- 5:04SPEAKER_03: And then, of course, you've got all the shopping, and like uh Neil was saying, we have a distillery just right around the corner.
- 5:10SPEAKER_03: Uh, the other thing for the late for the ladies and for the guys, because we have lots of nice, we have uh probably five or six thousand dollars worth of donations that will be in a silent auction.
- 5:21SPEAKER_03: Oh, and then and then we we give other prizes that we get donated to the uh VFW and the Lost Pines Leathernicks, and they've got a great raffle going on that the winners will be announced right before the awards are done, so they can buy raffle tickets.
- 5:37SPEAKER_03: There's at least 13, uh, like a weekend package at the Hyatt, the Lost Pines Resort that's worth about$3,500 as the first prize.
- 5:46SPEAKER_03: Nice and various other guns and other items that are in the raffle.
- 5:50SPEAKER_03: So it's uh so that's a and there'll be two two tents selling those raffle tickets.
- 5:56Mike Marrs: So there's a sounds like there's a lot of things going on that people can do on Saturday, but does some of that roll into like the raffle tickets?
- 6:03Mike Marrs: Are those available on Friday if somebody comes in to participate in the Friday events?
- 6:08SPEAKER_03: Well, I don't think they're uh I'd have to check, but I don't think they're selling tickets on Friday.
- 6:13SPEAKER_03: But there's plenty, plenty of opportunities on Saturday.
- 6:16SPEAKER_02: Um, yeah, Friday is uh more of an informal cruise in just to enjoy the shops and restaurants downtown.
- 6:23SPEAKER_02: Um, and we don't really have the booth set up on Friday.
- 6:27SPEAKER_03: Yeah, there's there's a little misconception too for some people.
- 6:29SPEAKER_03: They think if they come on Friday, they leave their cars there and just you know, or possibly could leave their cars there, but that's not we we start with a clean slate on uh Saturday morning, and if anybody's on the streets after 5 or 5:30, they're subject to being towed away because there's at least what 10 10 15 blocks of street of streets that are barricaded off in several parking lots.
- 6:54Mike Marrs: Well, if you gotta make room for 400 cars to park in a display type venue because people are gonna be able to walk between them, so it's not gonna be really jammed in there really tight.
- 7:02Mike Marrs: So that's really cool.
- 7:03Mike Marrs: And want to make sure everybody understands spectators are free.
- 7:06Mike Marrs: You want to come in for the weekend, you want to come in for the day, there's no charge, anything like that.
- 7:12Mike Marrs: Just come in and enjoy the event.
- 7:14SPEAKER_03: There are some there are some kids' activities too.
- 7:17SPEAKER_03: Uh, we have an area we call a kids' activity area.
- 7:20SPEAKER_03: There's a a local uh it's called Film Alley in Bastrop, which is one of the theaters, and they have a little race car set that they set up, and then the city of Bastrop downtown has some kids' activities and games.
- 7:33SPEAKER_03: And for the first time this year, we've got a a roofing company that has uh they're calling it a cow graham, which is basically a little the Highland calves, which are you know little, little smaller calves uh that are very gentle and very uh kid friendly.
- 7:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we're gonna have we're gonna have a couple of those over there uh right in that same area, right across from the kids area.
- 7:59SPEAKER_03: So, so uh, you know, it's a nice, it's a nice uh activity for kids because they can take pictures with the calves and and pet and pet them and and all that.
- 8:08SPEAKER_03: And it's very safe, it's very safe also.
- 8:10SPEAKER_02: And another another thing that the car club uh does is at 10:30 on Saturday, we'll be having a veterans march.
- 8:17SPEAKER_02: If you're in the show or just coming and being a participant uh in the viewing, um, and you're a veteran, you can march in the parade.
- 8:25SPEAKER_02: Uh we have a bagpiper that leads the parade in the ROT, local ROTC.
- 8:30SPEAKER_02: Uh, we also have a flyover um at the same time uh that really helps uh you know um just bring out the event and uh that march will uh lead from the uh post office, walk down Main Street to the um, you know, to the uh uh sorry.
- 8:49SPEAKER_03: So it's it's the uh courthouse where there's actually a veterans memorial at the courthouse, so it's very fitting.
- 8:55SPEAKER_03: It's about a it's about a four city block.
- 8:58SPEAKER_03: Of course, city blocks are always subject to you know what is a city block.
- 9:02SPEAKER_03: But at least and and and anybody who's on unable to march because maybe they're in a wheelchair or somewhat handicapped, we do have some golf carts to help them.
- 9:10SPEAKER_03: And you don't have to march all the way.
- 9:12SPEAKER_03: You want you can join like just the last block, and but but there is their part of that ceremony, is there's actually an award uh put on by the red, white, and blue uh organization here in town that honors veterans.
- 9:25SPEAKER_03: And they've got a big, they've got a big event, big banquet that they have uh uh over at the convention center at night.
- 9:31SPEAKER_03: So Saturday.
- 9:32SPEAKER_03: There's also art museums, there's an art museum that's about four or five blocks uh down down the street.
- 9:39SPEAKER_03: Uh but the you know everything is is I mean, there's many things as we sit here and think, there's more things than we can even think of.
- 9:47SPEAKER_03: That's uh uh Bastrop has a foundry here that makes these gigantic uh statues, bronze statues.
- 9:56SPEAKER_03: Many of them are many of the statues at the at the courthouse uh or at the uh state capitol building were made by this uh foundry, and they have a they have a place about two blocks off Main Street that have a beautiful showroom with really some very high-end artwork and sculptures and things like that.
- 10:13Mike Marrs: Wow, it sounds like the city and the community is really really involved with your event, your heroes and hot rods, which is absolutely much more than just a car show.
- 10:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we have we have many sponsors, and we raise over the last several years at least$50,000 with 80%, a minimum of 80% of that fifty thousand dollars in proceeds going to uh veteran support organizations.
- 10:40SPEAKER_03: We do high school automotive scholarships, so it's it's really a fundraiser as as and every other thing else like that.
- 10:47SPEAKER_03: So uh anything you do, whether it's the silent auction or the raffle, it all goes to veterans' events and and other like the food pantry and the homeless shelter, all the other uh charitable organizations that are within the city.
- 10:59Mike Marrs: And this is all done by the Bass Drop Area Cruisers, is the name of your organization, right?
- 11:06Mike Marrs: Yes, sir.
- 11:07Mike Marrs: Yep, just checking making sure.
- 11:09Mike Marrs: I still got the question.
- 11:13Mike Marrs: Still got it up here on the screen.
- 11:14Mike Marrs: The QR code's still there, uh, and it's bassdropareacruisers.com.
- 11:18Mike Marrs: Free spectator admission, 400 cars set up, registered for the to participate in the car show, and there will be awards.
- 11:27SPEAKER_02: Oh yes, yeah, we uh we have uh what 40 classes, 30 33 classes, 33 classes, and some of them have as many.
- 11:35SPEAKER_03: If if we have more than 15 or or more than 20 cars in a class, and we do in a couple of the classes, we split the class.
- 11:42SPEAKER_03: So there's going to be two first place award, two first place awards, and we don't do a second and third place, it gives us a lot more flexibility.
- 11:50SPEAKER_03: We anybody who is you might say a runner up, whether it be second highest or third highest or fourth highest, many times we have what we call outstanding in class award.
- 12:01SPEAKER_03: So we could have one class that might be has 20 cars.
- 12:04SPEAKER_03: There's one first place, there could be three or even four outstanding in class.
- 12:08SPEAKER_03: And uh Neil can also explain how we do the judging, which is a real one of the reasons, in addition to all the the things to do downtown that we get that we were filled up is because uh a lot of the people really want to bring their cars, especially the nice, nice cars, uh, to be judged.
- 12:24SPEAKER_03: So Neil can talk about how we do our judging.
- 12:27SPEAKER_02: Uh yeah, so we we have we break up into groups.
- 12:31SPEAKER_02: Uh our judges will judge a certain type of vehicle, like uh maybe uh uh tri-5 cars, and they'll go out throughout the event, find all the tri-5 cars, and they'll judge them.
- 12:43SPEAKER_02: Uh, if you are being judged, uh we request that you open your hood and your trunk.
- 12:49SPEAKER_02: Uh that way you get the full point spread.
- 12:51SPEAKER_02: Because if your hood's closed, they won't judge your, you won't get those points.
- 12:56SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 12:57SPEAKER_02: And we judge on you know cleanliness and you know, paint quality and uh interior, and um, you know, we try to be as fair as possible.
- 13:05SPEAKER_02: That's why we we try to have the same judges judge the same group of vehicles.
- 13:11SPEAKER_02: Um, now we also, as the Bass Drop Area Cruisers, we do not put our club cars in the show.
- 13:17SPEAKER_02: So you're not competing against us.
- 13:19SPEAKER_02: We have a separate lot uh for 34 of our vehicles.
- 13:24SPEAKER_02: Um, it's the only space that we all allocate to ourselves, but uh the participants in the show can't judge our cars, and there is an award for us.
- 13:32SPEAKER_03: We give them a ballot, we give every participant a ballot and say, go look at the Bastrop Area Cruiser's car and check off your three favorites.
- 13:40SPEAKER_03: And then we at the end of the award ceremony, some of our members get an award, but it's been completely separate from the judging.
- 13:47SPEAKER_03: And as Neil said, the key thing is regardless of what class you're in, two to three people are judging those same cars.
- 13:56SPEAKER_03: So that makes it as fair as possible.
- 13:58SPEAKER_03: It's not like just walking down a street and judging a whole street with cars one against another.
- 14:03SPEAKER_03: One could be a 1960 and one could be a brand new Corvette, you know.
- 14:07Mike Marrs: So that makes a lot of sense.
- 14:09Mike Marrs: And and if you've been around car shows very long and awards, obviously, you know you're not gonna make everybody happy.
- 14:16Mike Marrs: Somebody's not gonna think they were judged fair and etc.
- 14:19Mike Marrs: But the fact that you have so many cars, 400 cars coming back every year or year after year anyway, then then people seem to like your judging or they accept it as being as fair as people are gonna be.
- 14:35Mike Marrs: True.
- 14:35Mike Marrs: Yeah.
- 14:36SPEAKER_02: And uh we, you know, we try to um we don't want one car winning all the awards.
- 14:41SPEAKER_02: And uh, I know some people have been disappointed about that in the past, but you know, we try to spread them out a little bit.
- 14:47SPEAKER_03: Last year, you're or I'd say the last at least six or eight years, we make sure that if there's some top cars, there are some other awards like Mayor's Choice and and uh uh Discover Bass Drop.
- 14:59SPEAKER_03: That's a big supporter of our event, Discover Bass Drop in the City, City Manager Awards, and some of the like we have a Best Veterans, that's not Best Veterans, it's Veterans Choice, which is sponsored by Covert Chevrolet, which is one of our sponsors, and Craig's Jewelry Store, which is our largest.
- 15:16SPEAKER_03: We call them the presidential sponsor.
- 15:18SPEAKER_03: They donate several thousand dollars to this event.
- 15:20SPEAKER_03: They pick best, they pick the best or uh presidential choice award.
- 15:25SPEAKER_03: So so a car will not win more than one special award in most cases.
- 15:32Mike Marrs: So you've got all kinds of judges going on then, and and and spectators can get involved by judging the club cars that are in a special place.
- 15:40Mike Marrs: I think that's really cool to get them involved in doing that.
- 15:42Mike Marrs: And really and truly, that means there's 434, maybe 440 cars in the car show.
- 15:49Mike Marrs: Oh, for sure, yeah.
- 15:50Mike Marrs: Yeah, so uh that's that's big on anybody's scale.
- 15:54Mike Marrs: So uh and okay, let's go through this again.
- 15:56Mike Marrs: So, what's the date?
- 15:58SPEAKER_02: It's uh November uh 13th and 14th.
- 16:02Mike Marrs: Friday and Saturday, with a lot of the the cruising events happening on Friday, kind of getting everybody in the mood, going downtown.
- 16:09SPEAKER_03: And I'm sure the cruising goes from 5 p.m.
- 16:12SPEAKER_03: to 9 p.m.
- 16:13SPEAKER_03: And it's important that anybody comes into cruising that they park their cars back in the normal fashion after 9 30.
- 16:20Mike Marrs: Uh okay.
- 16:21Mike Marrs: Good to note, good to note.
- 16:22Mike Marrs: Okay, and then Saturday morning starts off and it starts with the 10:30 with the veterans parade.
- 16:28SPEAKER_02: Uh well we start uh we open the show at uh 7:30.
- 16:32SPEAKER_03: And uh that's when we start parking the cars 7.30.
- 16:35SPEAKER_02: 8 o'clock.
- 16:36SPEAKER_02: Well, uh the show is open to the public.
- 16:38Mike Marrs: Okay, I'm gonna let you talk about the schedule then, and I'm gonna shut up.
- 16:43SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and then also we have for the for the veterans march, we also have planned pending weather.
- 16:49SPEAKER_03: I mean, we're we're not gonna talk about weather because it's just gonna be great.
- 16:53Mike Marrs: It's gonna be beautiful.
- 16:54SPEAKER_03: Commemorative Air Force out of St.
- 16:56SPEAKER_03: Mark San Marcos brings at least one, in some cases, two or three.
- 17:00SPEAKER_03: Uh, we have one of our sponsors, Nitschke Insurance, that pays for the flyover.
- 17:04SPEAKER_03: So we have a flyover some with some vintage uh military aircraft.
- 17:10SPEAKER_03: And it goes it that comes by right when the people are marching.
- 17:13Mike Marrs: So yeah, what else could you ask for?
- 17:16Mike Marrs: You got lots of beautiful cars to look at, the weather's gonna be great.
- 17:20Mike Marrs: You've got a lot of veterans recognition that that's gonna be so well deserved, and it's in a beautiful setting.
- 17:27SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and we have we have quite a few vendor booths that are veteran related.
- 17:31SPEAKER_03: In other words, there are services for veterans and things.
- 17:34SPEAKER_03: We don't charge them for a booth, they're mostly gonna be on uh courthouse grounds.
- 17:39SPEAKER_03: So any almost most nonprofits that uh ask us for a booth that are 501c3s, we give them a booth at no cost.
- 17:47SPEAKER_03: There's another little vendor guy that or guy, not a little guy, but a vendor booth that I don't know if you've seen before where somebody makes uh license plates, they'll cut up plates and and you could get it to say whatever you want.
- 18:00Mike Marrs: He's gonna be there, and and a few other you know, car-related uh oh that's great because I my father was in the CBs, and every once in a while I would see uh a unique hat from the Navy or the CBs or something and pick it up for him just because, and uh, I think it's a great opportunity to do some more things like that.
- 18:17SPEAKER_03: So the restaurant, the restaurants downtown are amazing, you know.
- 18:21SPEAKER_03: Every restaurant is really great.
- 18:23Mike Marrs: Well, a lot of people are gonna find out, I hope.
- 18:26Mike Marrs: So we're running out of time.
- 18:28Mike Marrs: I want to wish you the best of luck, and I think it sounds like it's gonna be a great show.
- 18:32Mike Marrs: I wish you great weather, and uh we'll talk again.
- 18:37Mike Marrs: Okay, come downstairs.
- 18:38Mike Marrs: Bill Zaylig and Neil Young.
- 18:40Mike Marrs: Thank you.
- 18:41Mike Marrs: Neil Young, what did I just call you?
- 18:42Mike Marrs: Neil Young.
- 18:44Mike Marrs: We haven't started a singing career yet.
- 18:47Mike Marrs: Well, we might we might move him into that next.
- 18:50Mike Marrs: We could do one of the attractions.
- 18:52Mike Marrs: There you go.
- 18:54Mike Marrs: Yeah, we'll get him a booth.
- 18:55Mike Marrs: Neil Jones, thank you guys very much.
- 18:57Mike Marrs: Be careful.
- 18:59SPEAKER_03: We really appreciate your support and uh the great coverage that you do for the event in the Houston area and beyond.
- 19:05Mike Marrs: I think it's a great event, and I'm glad to do what I can do.
- 19:08Mike Marrs: All right, take care, guys.
- 19:10Mike Marrs: All right, you too.
- 19:11Mike Marrs: Bye.
- 19:12Mike Marrs: A big thanks to Bill Z Leg and Neil Jones from the Bass Top Area Cruisers for joining us again today.
- 19:18Mike Marrs: And uh, we're going to take a quick break and we'll be right back after this message.
- 19:27SPEAKER_00: It's that time again.
- 19:28SPEAKER_00: Fire up those engines.
- 19:30SPEAKER_00: Euros and Hot Rods is rolling into Bassdrop for Veterans Day weekend.
- 19:34SPEAKER_00: Friday night, cruise downtown.
- 19:36SPEAKER_00: Saturday, 400 of the coolest rides in Texas, take over Main Street.
- 19:41SPEAKER_00: Honor our veterans, enjoy local food and shopping, and help support local charities and scholarships.
- 19:47SPEAKER_00: Presented by Craig's Jewelry and over 200 local sponsors, November 13th and 14th, Downtown Bass Drop.
- 19:54SPEAKER_00: Don't miss it.
- 19:55Mike Marrs: Cars, trucks, SUVs, motorsports, road trips, and the people who make the automotive world interesting.
- 20:02Mike Marrs: In Wheel Time is changing and we're expanding.
- 20:04Mike Marrs: We're bringing you more automotive stories, more interviews, more destinations, and more of what you may have missed.
- 20:10Mike Marrs: From Texas to the automotive world beyond, in wheel time is your place for automotive talk without the politics or the nonsense.
- 20:17Mike Marrs: Join us for the next generation of In Wheel Time.
- 20:20Mike Marrs: Cars, trucks, and the people who love them.
- 20:25Mike Marrs: Time now for our feature on automotive history.
- 20:28Mike Marrs: A look a week at the head, November 1 through November the 7th.
- 20:33Mike Marrs: On November the 2nd, 1895, the American Motor League was formed in Chicago.
- 20:38Mike Marrs: This became the country's earliest organization devoted to automobiles.
- 20:42Mike Marrs: At the time, cars were still kind of experimental machines, roads were designed primarily for horses and wagons, and of course, motors face a considerable skepticism over.
- 20:52Mike Marrs: And the new organization represented an early effort to bring automobile enthusiasts together and promote the development of motorized transportation.
- 21:00Mike Marrs: This was years before the automobile became very common.
- 21:04Mike Marrs: So organizations like this as well as the Triple A group, which uh the two eventually merged into helped provide uh an advocacy group that would uh promote uh the use of automobiles for transportation.
- 21:16Mike Marrs: Then on November the 5th, 1895, George Seldon received a U.S.
- 21:20Mike Marrs: patent for the gasoline-powered road vehicle.
- 21:23Mike Marrs: And although Selden had never actually manufactured the automobile described as a patent for her, the patent eventually became the basis for her demanding royalties from American automobile makers.
- 21:34Mike Marrs: Henry Ford refused to accept the arrangement, leading to a lengthy legal battle.
- 21:39Mike Marrs: Ford ultimately prevailed in 1911 when the patent's scope was narrowed or the decision helped protect the competition in the developing American automobile industry.
- 21:59Mike Marrs: Now the court It featured front-wheel drive, independent front suspension, concealed headlights, and a distinctive coffin nose front end.
- 22:06Mike Marrs: It had a low slung appearance.
- 22:07Mike Marrs: It was really different from anything else that was on the road at the time.
- 22:11Mike Marrs: Unfortunately, there were some production difficulties and reliability concerns, so it had limited success.
- 22:17Mike Marrs: Even so, the Cord 810 became one of the most recognizable American automobiles of the 1930s.
- 22:24Mike Marrs: Today, its styling remains a favorite among collectors, and there's been a few tries at trying to bring it back, but it's never really came to fruition.

- 23:00Mike Marrs: Murphy was already an accomplished driver with experience in several forms of motorsports, including drag racing.
- 23:07Mike Marrs: But her historic lapse actually helped challenge the long-standing assumptions about women in racing and preceded the arrival of female competitors in the Indianapolis 500.
- 23:17Mike Marrs: Then on November the 5th, this was really strange, I found, November the 5th, 1978, Richard Petty appeared to have won the NASCAR Winston Cup race at the Atlanta International Raceway.
- 23:29Mike Marrs: But after officials reviewed the scoring, the victory was awarded to Donnie Allison.
- 23:34Mike Marrs: Now, this was an unusual reversal, and it gave Allison what would become the Final Cup Series victory of his career.
- 23:40Mike Marrs: But for Petty, who was already one of NASCAR's greatest competitors, it was really frustrating.
- 23:45Mike Marrs: The incident serves as a reminder that racing results aren't always determined by the electronic timing and the scoring systems.
- 23:54Mike Marrs: Sometimes, even after the checkered flag, you got officials involved, and officials had to sort through the records of this particular event to determine who actually won.
- 24:04Mike Marrs: And that's a look at our automotive history for the week ahead, November the 1st through the 7th.
