- 0:35Podcast, I'm joined by the one and only Carl Gibbons.
- 0:39Some of you may know Call from his YouTube channel at Call
- 0:43Running, but if you've been watching along, you'll know he's
- 0:48just not making videos. He's been racking off some
- 0:51pretty fast times again. 1424 for five KA, 2945 for 10 KA,
- 1:006444 for the half marathon, and then on his marathon debut, he
- 1:05just rocks up with AA21652 on his very first attempt.
- 1:11Yeah, Call. Welcome to the show.
- 1:13Thank you very much. I'm I'm also a big fan of of the
- 1:15podcast, so maybe I should be interviewing you.
- 1:17I don't. Know it's our honor to have you
- 1:21on yeah, like create some crazy, crazy times and we're big fans
- 1:27here. We love the YouTube, so we love
- 1:29that you document everything and yeah, no, it's great to have you
- 1:32on. I appreciate that a lot.
- 1:34It's good to be here. OK, so you get, but we'll get
- 1:42into a few quick fires and that's how we normally start off
- 1:45just to sort of break the ice. And do you follow a football
- 1:52team, a soccer team? I.
- 1:53Do, but it's a bit embarrassing. I'm a I'm a Leeds United fan.
- 1:59I once you had a good win last night.
- 2:02Yeah, yeah. I mean, we played like
- 2:04horrifically. So I don't know how we've
- 2:06managed to get through. Yeah, anything to.
- 2:08I've got a couple of like a couple of good friends of mine
- 2:11that are all West Ham, Spurs and and Burnley fans.
- 2:14So I've really, I've really hoped, but at least two of the
- 2:16three of those go down. You've got good odds, yes.
- 2:20Spurs aren't looking too good. Are you a half tight or a split
- 2:26short type of guy? Or does that depend on the race?
- 2:29So yeah, it depends on the race. I actually listened to your
- 2:31episode of Callum Nelson and I would probably say the exact
- 2:34same thing as him. If it's like if it's a track
- 2:36race is probably going to be like half tights.
- 2:40If it's like a short race and then they see the longer and
- 2:42especially if it's on the roads, it becomes split shorts.
- 2:46Nice, nice, nice. Do you have like a booklet
- 2:50bucket list race that you'd like love to hit?
- 2:52Like I know being from England and the UK, like London Marathon
- 2:56be well up there, but anything outside of that?
- 2:59Well, I'd love to do the majors and I feel like as a 25 year old
- 3:02bloke, the, the biggest barrier to me competing the majors is
- 3:05finances. Like how, how do you finance
- 3:08flying to America, Australia? And now like they're going to
- 3:11add say like Shanghai and, and Cape Town, for example.
- 3:14That's for me. Like being able to complete all
- 3:17those would be epic. But it also seems quite
- 3:20difficult. Like I can, I can run a marathon
- 3:21like it's, it's like it's comfortable distance, but but
- 3:25the actual biggest barrier to me completing the race I want to do
- 3:27is the finances. I'd say any of the world majors,
- 3:32especially Boston, obviously being the grandfather of the
- 3:34marathons. I mean, so I'd say that really.
- 3:41And with like you'd be in, would you get into most elite starts?
- 3:47Because I know like 216, like you're really, really up there,
- 3:50but would you get that elite start?
- 3:52I don't know. I mean, for example, this year
- 3:54at London, I didn't qualify. I was 52 seconds off, 53 seconds
- 3:58off because it's all 216. And I don't know what it would
- 4:02be for the, the overseas ones because I haven't even looked
- 4:04because if I can't afford the flights, there's there's no
- 4:07point looking at the, the entry standards.
- 4:11But yeah, I, I think so. I think some people have said
- 4:13something like Tokyo, I could get in, and Sydney, but I don't
- 4:17know about like, say Boston stuff because I think they're
- 4:20quite American dominant. But I don't know, yeah.
- 4:23Yeah, you've you've plenty of time, so I won't be worried
- 4:26about that too much yet. Emma, what is your favorite
- 4:32place to train? Now?
- 4:33I know being from Ireland, we love the weather over here in
- 4:38the UK and Ireland like it's been really, really nice lately.
- 4:40But if you had to pick anywhere else, where would you pick if?
- 4:43I could go and just do, yeah, I don't know, like a training
- 4:46camp. I'd probably pick say like Alba
- 4:47Farah, Portugal. I've been there a couple of
- 4:49times, but every time I've been there I haven't really been fit.
- 4:52And that's guess I've been like a bit of a bugbear.
- 4:54So I'd love to be there when I'm fit, like training for a
- 4:58marathon because it's just really cool.
- 5:00You've got like the you've got the track, you've got like the
- 5:02old Europe, European cross country course that they use
- 5:05there from, from like the Lisbon.
- 5:09Not it's been, sorry, Albuquerque cross country like a
- 5:11few years ago. And you've got like these really
- 5:14nice like loops and long kind of tarmac paths.
- 5:17So yeah, it's like perfect place to train generally good weather,
- 5:21good food. You're right by like orange
- 5:22Groves. So you can always smell like
- 5:24oranges when you're running, which is just really nice.
- 5:26And not that I'm admitting to this, but someone, if they
- 5:29wanted to, could maybe nab an orange off the tree as they ran
- 5:33poster. I was actually, I was in
- 5:37Valencia there in January doing the 10K and there's loads of
- 5:41orange trees and me being, I don't know, I took one, but they
- 5:45were really, really sweet. Like I actually couldn't eat it.
- 5:49I've got a massive sweet tooth, so for me that's like like,
- 5:53perfect. I think Adam Fogg is actually
- 5:57over an Alba fair at the moment. He's after doing like a little
- 6:01camp. Yeah, it's a really, really
- 6:04popular place, especially this sort of kind of like Easter time
- 6:07of the year. Like whenever I have been, it's
- 6:09been ramo. There's been loads of like
- 6:10Scandinavians, loads of Irish. This is absolutely ramo full of
- 6:15runners. Like you can go for a long run
- 6:17and there'll be 60 plus people, like all going at like 6 to 7
- 6:20minute mile in like, yeah, it's like a really good place to
- 6:23train, especially this time of year.
- 6:26That's nice. In your opinion, what is the
- 6:30hardest distance to race between the 1500 to the marathon?
- 6:34Like what is like in Europe, the hardest one?
- 6:37Because I know like people say running longer is harder and
- 6:39other people say running faster is harder.
- 6:41So in your opinion, what is it? Oh, I don't know.
- 6:44I think the way I look at that in my head is like try and
- 6:46calculate like what percentage of the race is really hard.
- 6:50So you've got like the marathon was the last 10 case, you're
- 6:52looking at like 25% of it, whereas like the 5K, like I
- 6:56thought that gets painful from probably like 2K.
- 6:58So you're looking at like a good 60% of that.
- 7:00And then for, for me, like something like the 1500, it's
- 7:03the exact same like I'm hurting from lap 1.
- 7:05So you're looking at like 75% at the rate.
- 7:08So I'd say anywhere between 1500 and and 5K.
- 7:11But yeah, probably 5K because I'd do them more, more
- 7:14frequently. I just, I hate them.
- 7:15I'd rather do a marathon than a 5K.
- 7:17Yeah. Yeah, I've never done the right
- 7:20to myself, but I don't, I'm my very first 1500 in in February
- 7:26just there and I feel it goes so fast like it's you're, it's
- 7:31certainly over in less than 4 minutes, hopefully.
- 7:34So yeah, I think it's a shorter one.
- 7:37I think some of the short ones are just so painful.
- 7:40Yeah, it's just, they hurt so early and it's like you don't
- 7:42give yourself a chance to prepare for it.
- 7:44Or is like in the marathon, you, you spend 30K thinking about how
- 7:47you're going to then hurt towards the end.
- 7:50So you're almost like prime yourself ready for it.
- 7:52And also it's a different kind of pain because like if you're
- 7:55if you're doing a marathon, you just slow down.
- 7:57Like no one's really going to pay too much attention if you're
- 8:00on a track and let's say like championship race and you just
- 8:03pull your foot off the gas. Like everyone is saying that
- 8:06it's going to be on YouTube. It's just embarrassing.
- 8:09So you have to push through the pain.
- 8:11There's no, there's no choice. Yeah, you're just swimming and
- 8:14lactic out the back. And what's your go to coffee
- 8:20order? Oh I see.
- 8:23It depends who I'm with. If I'm with a coffee snob, I'll
- 8:25probably just get some, like a flat white.
- 8:28If I'm not with a coffee snob, I'll probably get like a
- 8:34cappuccino with caramel syrup. Like a caramel cappuccino.
- 8:37That's mine and mine and my girlfriends, like, go to coffee
- 8:40order. It's like sweet, but like, nice
- 8:42amount of coffee. Yeah, probably that to be fair.
- 8:46And if you could pick a pastry, what's your Would you have a
- 8:48pastry with it? Oh I see.
- 8:50So there's this place where I'm from in near Whitstable, and
- 8:53they used to do this apricot Danish, this like pastry of
- 8:57apricot jamming, and it was absolutely delicious and they
- 8:59stopped doing it. And I just can't find like
- 9:02anything like that anywhere near where I live now.
- 9:04So yeah, an apricot Danish would be the go to, but I just can't
- 9:07find like a good one. Random so if any listeners know
- 9:12we're looking for a nice apricot, Danish isn't there
- 9:14where call lives it's. A bit rude, but yeah, it's kind
- 9:17of. I've never had.
- 9:20I'd be more of an almond cross on type of guy.
- 9:22I had actually my first almond cross on on the in an airport
- 9:26two years ago before I went to Australia.
- 9:28And since then I've probably made-up for all the time I
- 9:31didn't eat them. I just, yeah, I love and I'm a
- 9:33croissant. Just never been a massive
- 9:36croissant guy. I don't know.
- 9:37I think it's like just the fact it goes everywhere when you take
- 9:39a bite. It's just it's a bit like a
- 9:40Nature Valley bar. You just have it goes on your
- 9:43lap and then I mean, you eat the other half.
- 9:45Yeah, I get it. Right.
- 9:49Well, we'll pull it back a little bit.
- 9:51So younger Cole, growing up, were you always into running or
- 9:56that comes sort of later on in life?
- 9:58So I'm going to run in through Park Run like a lot of people.
- 10:02So I've got a massive, I guess a lot lot to thank park Run for.
- 10:06I did like the odd like school cross country race at primary
- 10:08school where it's like, I don't know, they just basically picked
- 10:10some of the more athletic kids and just said, oh, we've got a
- 10:13school cross country. Can you come do it?
- 10:15And I don't know, you just absolutely like batter yourself
- 10:18around. It'd only be like two or three
- 10:20kilometers because you're of your, your kids, right?
- 10:22But at the time it felt like ages and it'd be, I don't know,
- 10:27like on 23rd or I'd come 40th or 50th or 10 years, So not very
- 10:31high up. And then when I got to year 6, I
- 10:34then made this like school relay team for the cross country.
- 10:37And the other two kids on this three person relay were really,
- 10:40really good cross country runners.
- 10:42And I was the third team member and I was I was not very good at
- 10:45all. So I actually started to train
- 10:46because I didn't want to be the one that let the team down.
- 10:49And then the first rates that we did together, we won it.
- 10:51So that kind of lit a spark. I was like, oh, actually like,
- 10:53maybe I'm all right at this, you know.
- 10:56So then I used to go out training in like the backfields
- 10:58out the back of my house with with my dad.
- 11:00We didn't know like any distances or anything.
- 11:01It would just be like, run a lap as hard as you can, then have a
- 11:04little break right now, do another lap as hard as you can,
- 11:07that sort of thing. And then, yeah, we were, me and
- 11:10my family were doing Borum and Latin dancing lessons.
- 11:14That was my mum's thing. She absolutely loved dancing.
- 11:16So we just kind of had to go because we were kids, I suppose.
- 11:20And then this one time we were driving along the sea front all
- 11:22the way back on a Saturday morning and I was like, oh,
- 11:25what's this like group of people?
- 11:26I really want to do whatever they're doing.
- 11:28Like, they're all running. I look like they're having a
- 11:31great time. Some more than more than others.
- 11:35I turned out to be park runs. Then I've got my, my parents got
- 11:39their friends take me to the park run and then kind of never
- 11:42look back from there. Then when I turned on here, I
- 11:44was like 14, I joined the club and then, yeah, you kind of
- 11:48don't know. Then you suddenly become more
- 11:49passionate about it. Suddenly you don't park on every
- 11:51weekend. You're doing your junior park
- 11:53run on the Sunday as well, doing your club session on a Tuesday.
- 11:58And yeah, just kind of snowballed from there really.
- 12:00So yeah, from, yeah, early teens, I would say I was really
- 12:03passionate into it, but I wasn't doing it as a kid.
- 12:05There was no like projecting A Brits and nothing like that.
- 12:08Yeah, I feel like that's what I love about running.
- 12:12Like you don't have to be the most talented.
- 12:15Like hard work can take you so far in this sport.
- 12:19And then at the end of the day, like genetics can like kick you
- 12:22on to that next level. But just putting in the work,
- 12:26being very committed can like really go really, really far in
- 12:30the sport. Yeah, definitely, yeah, for
- 12:33sure. And I think also the people that
- 12:34do it like at a young age as well, I feel like even if they
- 12:37then take a break and then come into it as an adult, I feel like
- 12:39if you've ran whilst you were young, I feel like it does give
- 12:43you that little leg up, you know?
- 12:45So yeah, it's my benefit. Yeah, I always, I would have
- 12:50always done running as a kid. And then over here in Ireland,
- 12:54we've Gaelic football. So that sort of took like center
- 12:57stage in my life for the middle years.
- 12:59And then I'm have to come back to running now.
- 13:01So I feel like I had a little sabbatical in the middle where I
- 13:03didn't really do it. But now, yeah, you sort of get
- 13:07hungry again for. And even growing up, we used to
- 13:09dread going to the cross country races like like, no, ma'am, why
- 13:13do I have to do this? But now I know your sort of
- 13:15perspective is like switched and like you're like excited and all
- 13:19for the running. It's weird.
- 13:23Did you have any like idols growing up running idols?
- 13:27Yes, I mean, you probably have this answer loads of times, but
- 13:30Mo Farah was the was the one, you know, like at London
- 13:33Olympics. It's like MO Farah's got the
- 13:35double, that sort of thing, like 1/2 for the Salazar group.
- 13:38But that sort of like commentary just sticks in my head because
- 13:40I've watched that so many times, like growing up and continues to
- 13:44be a massive idol city. I know there's like question
- 13:46marks over over Mo Farah, which is which is sad because I would,
- 13:50I would like to hope that, but you never know.
- 13:53But a conversation for another day.
- 13:55But yeah, so Mo Farah and Mill Caress as I've got a bit older
- 13:59and then also Ben Connor, who I who was coaching me for a short
- 14:02period. They're all people that I really
- 14:03looked up to. And then now as I'm like, I'm a
- 14:05bit more, I guess a bit more older and but been in the sport
- 14:09a little bit longer. People like Phil Sesson and
- 14:11Alex. Yeah.
- 14:11You know, like the ones that are actually absolutely smashing it
- 14:14and like in current times, yeah, absolutely love those, those
- 14:18sorts of athletes. Like just like naming them
- 14:23runners there now, like the level of distance running in the
- 14:26UK is just, I feel like recently it's just gone to another level.
- 14:32Yeah, it's crazy. So I, I know obviously we're
- 14:34probably touching this, but last year after I ran London and I
- 14:36ran like really, really well, a load of people were like, oh,
- 14:39like, do you think you could become like a pro or do you
- 14:41think you could, I don't know, represent the Olympics?
- 14:43And initially when I first got asked that, I was like, oh, I
- 14:45ran 216. So yeah, maybe, maybe, maybe
- 14:47it's possible. And then like even in just a
- 14:49year since like now you've got Alex E206 full assessment 207.
- 14:54Now I'm going, yeah, it's probably not likely, but that's
- 14:56OK. Got Paddy de virtual Paddy
- 15:00Deaver in there as well. There's so many.
- 15:02Exactly like the the US landslide with their 60 minute
- 15:05halves. 50 or 59 for Paddy Deaver.
- 15:07Yeah, like, so I was just crazy. Yeah.
- 15:12So that was your sort of early days then uni.
- 15:17So you have you're an osteopath, correct?
- 15:21Yeah, I'm an osteopath, so I went and studied to.
- 15:23So osteopathy is different in terms of it's just it's his own
- 15:27degree, but it's at its own university.
- 15:30So you won't go to say Loughborough and do osteopathy.
- 15:32You you would go to these like specific uni.
- 15:34So it's like quite a closed kind of group.
- 15:36It's really small years. There was 60 people in my year
- 15:39at uni and not a single one of them ran.
- 15:42So I was like the only person. There's no like box element or
- 15:45anything like that. So yeah, started there, got
- 15:48injured, focused on my studies, and then kind of managed to
- 15:52focus a bit more on running when I came out the other side of it.
- 15:54Because it's a, it's a four year course.
- 15:58Yeah, some of the hardest years of my life was was the studying
- 16:01for sure. I'm not very good at that sort
- 16:02of thing. And actually that's I feel like
- 16:06that's when I came across you. I think you done the night of
- 16:10the 10,000 meter PBS, but you were sort of you document every
- 16:14like This is why I'm a big fan of YouTube.
- 16:16You're so, so open on it and you were running really, really
- 16:19well. And then I think was getting to
- 16:21the nitty gritty end of your degree and you sort of run and
- 16:25took the backseat basically. And then again, like your
- 16:29YouTube documents, I remember like your first run back and
- 16:32umm, you did like, I don't know, you just, you weren't in shape,
- 16:35but you document everything and you can just see how you've
- 16:39changed like from graduating to like running the 216 in London,
- 16:45umm. Yeah, yeah.
- 16:47I mean, so in the January of my last year at uni, I ended up
- 16:51picking a bit of I can, well, I've got an injury basically,
- 16:53and I wasn't sure what it was and I was being a uni student.
- 16:57I couldn't afford to get a private MRI scan done and the
- 17:00NHS waiting time was too long. I was pretty sure it was a
- 17:03stress fracture, but I wasn't sure.
- 17:04I hadn't had one before. I didn't really know the kind of
- 17:08the signs and symptoms. And this is kind of pretty
- 17:10ChatGPT days as so I just, I basically treated it like a
- 17:15stress fracture. I was like, look, I've got my
- 17:16final exams coming up, let's just have 16 weeks off like, or
- 17:20how much harm can that do realistically?
- 17:22Yes, I'm going to be unfit the other side and yes, it will feel
- 17:25like starting again. But it means I haven't got to
- 17:28like spin loads of plates of exams and running and stuff.
- 17:31And I think sometimes it's just those sorts of times have made
- 17:34me like so, so much more calm in this scenario I'm in now where
- 17:38I've got like an injury where I can't run again because I know
- 17:41how like you can get back. It's not, it's not the end of
- 17:44the day at the end of the world. And like, I think that's where
- 17:49it catches a lot of people, like you're out of life stress, how
- 17:53much impact that has on your running.
- 17:56Like you just don't absorb the training as much.
- 17:58Like how much did the UNI like affect you like you're running?
- 18:03Or massively because so like when I was living in my kind of
- 18:07my uni digs, I'd I'd have to get up before uni at like 5:00 to
- 18:12do, I don't know, 10 miles before uni.
- 18:13And then I would go and spend like all day at uni, not really
- 18:16enjoy it. Then have to be studying for
- 18:18exams and not really enjoy that. And then you haven't got too
- 18:21many people in your years. So it's not like that.
- 18:23You can socialize with people, but also it's the sort of, so my
- 18:27uni year was, it's a European school, so you had loads of
- 18:30students from overseas and typically the English ones were
- 18:34the ones that weren't very hard working and the European
- 18:36students were the ones that were hard working.
- 18:39So there wasn't very many people to like, I don't know, bugger
- 18:42around with because they were also studious and they didn't
- 18:44really want to like deviate from their studies too much.
- 18:47So yeah, it does, it does feel like quite lonely, that sort of
- 18:50environment. So running was my escape, but
- 18:52then also like, running in the dark at 5:00 AM was not not that
- 18:56funny either. So, yeah, it was just finding
- 18:59that balance. But yeah, it's, I guess like
- 19:03loads of new students are doing it now.
- 19:05But I wish I'd been in a bit more of like a box environment.
- 19:08Other runners, big training groups, coaches, you know, I
- 19:11would have been so much better. Yeah, I get you.
- 19:14I get you and come here and osteopath, how does that
- 19:18difference to like a chiropractor or a physio just
- 19:22for the people out there? So this is probably the question
- 19:24I get asked the most in my, in my job.
- 19:27Like people come and see me. They're like, OK, I think you
- 19:29can help me with my injury, but I don't actually know what you
- 19:31are. So you've got, from my, my
- 19:34experience, you've got a physio, which is a little bit more rehab
- 19:36plan basis. Like here's some exercises.
- 19:38Go and do these. They will do some on hands
- 19:40treatment, but it's predominantly outside the
- 19:42treatment room. You've got a chiropractor, which
- 19:44is a little bit more spine focused, but they do do other
- 19:48areas of the body, but it's a lot more manipulations, you
- 19:50know, like the, the clicking, the cracking, That's pretty much
- 19:52all they do. And then you've got an
- 19:54osteopath, which in my obviously bias opinion is like a better
- 19:58combination of all of them. So we do on hand treatment, we
- 20:01might do a little bit of massage, we might do some joint
- 20:04mobilization, some manipulations and you know, muscle energy
- 20:08techniques where we like stretching muscles.
- 20:10We basically look at patients as a as a whole person, as a, as a
- 20:13unit is kind of like the fundamental of osteopathy, like
- 20:16the one rule or like the main principle of osteopathy is that
- 20:19the body is a unit. So you're looking at the body.
- 20:22As a whole, so like, how does their work stress, how does
- 20:24their diet, how does their sleep like impact the injury that
- 20:28they've got, you know? And so yeah, it's kind of like
- 20:31the best of everything in my opinion.
- 20:33And then you've got like osteopaths that will then
- 20:36specialize in different things. So my girlfriend, for example,
- 20:39she's a little bit more Women's Health and pediatric focused,
- 20:42whereas I'm a little bit more like sports injury focused
- 20:44because it's like that's my my passion, I suppose.
- 20:49No, no, because like, yeah, you hear so much of people.
- 20:52I'm going to a chiropractor and I'm like, or I'm going to physio
- 20:55and like they're, they're sort of like all jumbled into one.
- 20:58But no, no, you've, you've cleared that up for me anyway,
- 21:01hopefully for everyone else as well.
- 21:05And your YouTube is a, is a massive, massive part of you as
- 21:11a person. Like you've been documenting, I
- 21:14think for is it four years now? Yeah, I think so, yeah.
- 21:16But about that, yeah. Over 300 videos like you are so
- 21:22so open and honest. Did this just like happen
- 21:26naturally or like what made you want to start the YouTube?
- 21:30I don't know if there was one specific reason, but I think
- 21:33there was definitely some sort of desire of, I don't know,
- 21:36having some sort of, I don't, I don't know if affection is the
- 21:40right word, but having like some more like relationships and, and
- 21:43friendships develop or just like the desire to be like admired a
- 21:47little bit because that's like I got bullied quite a bit at
- 21:50school. Like I had friends, but I didn't
- 21:53have like the most massive friendship group, if that makes
- 21:56sense. And then you'd like, I don't
- 21:58know, I'd go down to my club and I'd still feel like a little bit
- 22:00of an outsider. Whereas like the YouTube allowed
- 22:03me to make my own environment, if that makes sense.
- 22:05And like people that would then tune into the videos. 99% of the
- 22:08time there are people that want to be there.
- 22:10They want to be your friend. They want to watch the video.
- 22:13Obviously you've got the, the, the 1% that that down with us.
- 22:16You know, it helps with engagement, I suppose.
- 22:20But yeah, I think it's probably, probably that really.
- 22:23I just, I guess I wanted to be, you know, when you're at school
- 22:25and you like, you think like, oh, like I wish I was that kid
- 22:28because like, they're like people think they're cool or
- 22:30people think they're, they're like friendly or funny or
- 22:32whatever. It's that sort of thing.
- 22:34Like I wanted, I don't know, wanted that sort of connection
- 22:37with people, I suppose. Yeah.
- 22:40And I really feel like you can feel that from your videos.
- 22:44If you get me, like it's really raw, authentic.
- 22:47Like I love that we can follow you along.
- 22:51Like we're sort of we're a supporter if you get me.
- 22:54Like you don't know what half these sort of people are doing,
- 22:57but we know what you're doing, like what you're going through.
- 22:59Like I was loving the bill to London.
- 23:01It was so, so guys, so sad to see, to hear the news that when
- 23:04you got the injury. But yeah, it's just it's raw,
- 23:09authentic. You share the highs, the lows,
- 23:14like has it. Do you feel it's affected you
- 23:17sort of off the camera as well? Like is it hard to like?
- 23:21Do you feel like you have to post?
- 23:23Oh yeah, there's definitely an element of that.
- 23:27You don't want to go too long because I don't know.
- 23:28Then even the the way that I look at YouTube, you've got kind
- 23:32of you've got internal views, you've got external views,
- 23:34you've got people that don't watch your channel.
- 23:35They come to your channel as I like a shoe review.
- 23:38They're not watching for you. They're watching for the, the
- 23:40content of the and then you've got the more internal viewers,
- 23:43the people that are kind of following the journey a bit like
- 23:45what you said, they're kind of like almost like an adopted
- 23:47uncle auntie, you know, they're kind of like cheering me on type
- 23:50of thing. And if you leave videos too far
- 23:52apart, then people would disconnect from the story a
- 23:54little bit is what I found. So just keeping them kind of up
- 23:58to date, a bit of like a like just checking in type type video
- 24:01where you're just giving a little update.
- 24:04I think they're really important.
- 24:05But also YouTube has become part of my income as well.
- 24:08So there is a little bit of just in the back of my head like, oh,
- 24:14I need to make sure that I keep up with it because the way that
- 24:16YouTube works is you don't really see like the money from
- 24:18it for like another month to two months.
- 24:20So like if I stop now, I won't really feel the impact until
- 24:23another month or two months down the line.
- 24:25And I'll be like, oh, crap, I should have just carried on
- 24:27making some videos, but obviously not sacrificing the
- 24:30quality. But yeah, there's a few things
- 24:32that go into to like making sure that I stick on it, like a
- 24:35little bit of financial component, but also just making
- 24:38sure that like, I don't know, the people that have invested in
- 24:41my journey get like a bit of a reward.
- 24:42Like they want to be kept up to date, you know?
- 24:45Yeah, yeah, yeah, absolutely. And you feel like it adds
- 24:48pressure to the races when, let's say for that build up to
- 24:52London, you're doing like the series.
- 24:54Do you feel like that adds pressure on you to perform or?
- 24:59I think that's one thing that I've never already felt as much.
- 25:02It was more OK, yeah, no, I'd say so with them with the
- 25:07marathons, I'd say definitely because there is this like I ran
- 25:10216 and it's like everyone is defined by their number.
- 25:13They're like, I don't know. They'll be like, oh, hi, I'm
- 25:15XYZ. I'm a 2XX marathon runner.
- 25:19And that's like how a lot of people will start their videos
- 25:22with the other distances. I'm not worried because I'm
- 25:24pretty, I was pretty happy with like all of the PBS I've had up
- 25:26until that point and like chucking and 10K rates in
- 25:30February. I knew I wasn't enough smashed
- 25:31by PB. It was really good to check in.
- 25:33I'm not worried about what the time is in the clock to an
- 25:35extent. If it was like a lot lower than
- 25:37what I expected from myself, then then that would be that
- 25:40would be negative. But with the marathon, I think
- 25:43sort of for example, Valencia around 242 had a dreadful day.
- 25:47Like crumbled really, really hard.
- 25:50That is definitely one where I was like, I felt the pressure on
- 25:53the day of, like doing something reasonable, and then ended up
- 25:57running worse because I'd tried to earn some sort of, I don't
- 26:02know, congratulations on YouTube from running a better time, if
- 26:06that makes sense. Yeah, yeah, yeah, John like for
- 26:11but I feel like Ben felt and he's been very open recently
- 26:13with his like sub 65 attempt and I can just I can't imagine like
- 26:18the pressure, even though like he probably puts himself under a
- 26:20fair bit of pressure as well. But like from documenting it,
- 26:24like pulling out a Rotterdam and just being so vocal that I'm
- 26:29going to break 65 like it's it's it's very, very brave.
- 26:33But some people sink or swim and you swim.
- 26:37Think. I think if I was a massive kudos
- 26:40to Ben if I was in the same boat where I thought I don't want to
- 26:43do London math and purely from a fitness point of view, in terms
- 26:47of I don't think it's right for me when you're setting PBS
- 26:50across other distances, I don't know if I'd have the ball to do
- 26:52that. So a massive, massive fair play
- 26:55to him. I really respected his decision
- 26:57doing that. We'll see if you've got an
- 26:58injury or something that's completely different, people
- 27:00expect you to pull out. But yeah.
- 27:05How do you find balancing at all Like the YouTube your job
- 27:10running like what does like I don't know how you'd even dream.
- 27:13Like me personally, I work in nine to five and I run like, I
- 27:17don't know how you even have the time to like fit in the YouTube
- 27:20around it because editing these videos, it does take a while.
- 27:25It does. It does take a lot of time, but
- 27:27I'm very fortunate in that I can be flexible with my days as an
- 27:32osteopath. So for example, I take you for
- 27:33like a Monday. I will leave, leave home at like
- 27:376:00 to 7:00 in the morning. I'll get to work about 9:00
- 27:41because it's about two hour commute.
- 27:45I'll see some patients till about 10-11.
- 27:47Then I'll do my first run till 12 one, then see some more
- 27:52patients until about 4:00 or 5:00 in the afternoon.
- 27:54Do another run till about 6:00 and then see some more patients
- 27:57till 8:00 and then drive home and then get home at about 10 so
- 28:00I can fit it all in. It's not like someone who works,
- 28:03I don't know, like 9 to 5 and they're stuck 9:00 to 5:00 and I
- 28:06can't leave the office, they can't go to the gym.
- 28:10Like I can be flexible and keep one eye on when I'm booking
- 28:13patients in for their follow up appointments and be like, oh,
- 28:16actually I need to leave a 2 hour gap there because I need to
- 28:18be able to run and shower in that time.
- 28:21But yeah, it's simply time consuming.
- 28:23Like I'm not going to pretend like it's much of A social life
- 28:26because I won't. But yeah, it's, I'm unfortunate
- 28:31with my career. I think if I, if I, if I was in
- 28:33your position with a nine to five, I don't think I could spin
- 28:36all the plates that I'm spinning right now.
- 28:37So, so fair play to you. Especially when you are trying
- 28:42to run like 250K240K in a week. Like when you take a step back,
- 28:49do you like the job, all the running?
- 28:53Like what do you feel was the main component of your current
- 29:00injury now? So for people that don't know,
- 29:03actually do you want to say what injury you have, what has?
- 29:06Yeah. So I've developed a grade one
- 29:09stress response in my femur, which is essentially to be re
- 29:13reductive is my bone is swollen. So it's not fractured, it's
- 29:16swollen and they've kind of named it thigh splints, which is
- 29:19essentially my doctors. So the muscles on the inside of
- 29:22my thigh are pulling a little bit too much on the bones.
- 29:24The outer layer of the bone has become a bit upset and go
- 29:28inflamed. So, so whenever I do any kind of
- 29:30weight bearing exercise, it's becoming a little bit
- 29:32uncomfortable to run. So walking is a little bit
- 29:35uncomfortable. Still running is a little bit
- 29:36uncomfortable. But in terms of what I think
- 29:39kind of maybe was the biggest cause or like contribution
- 29:42factor to that is so the way that the injuries developed and
- 29:47as I was saying with my doctors is because of the over pulling
- 29:51of the of the muscle on the bone.
- 29:53So putting on an outer layer, it's not because of the
- 29:55compressive force. It was overtraining, but not in
- 29:58kind of your classic sense of your bones can't heal in time.
- 30:01It was more my muscle wasn't strong enough to handle the load
- 30:05on its own. So it was pulling too much on on
- 30:07the bone. Something as simple as having a
- 30:10deload week in the middle of the block could have potentially
- 30:13prevented this from happening, which is really, really, really
- 30:16sad. But yeah, it wasn't anything
- 30:19like under fuelling because I was eating 5 to 6000 calories a
- 30:22day, you know? Yeah.
- 30:27And you have been seeing a nutritionist.
- 30:31So what? How did seeing the nutritionist
- 30:34change? Like what did you alter to?
- 30:37Because I know before you were very open about like eating and
- 30:40not eating enough and all this. So how did seeing the
- 30:43nutritionist change your outlook on food?
- 30:45Because I myself, I've struggle with the food thing because I'd
- 30:48be a heavier, heavier runner compared to like other boys
- 30:51you're lining up against. How has the food changed for
- 30:54you? Yes, it's a constant battle,
- 30:57isn't it? Like comparing yourself to
- 30:58others and like you steal these other people on the start line.
- 31:01Not now I'm I'm twice the size of them.
- 31:05And it's, it's, it's silly comments.
- 31:07Like when I was younger, I used to see it like I'd be on the
- 31:09start line of a cross country race and someone would be like,
- 31:11oh, like he's a bit he's a bit bigger than the others and that
- 31:14kind of sticks with you. But in terms of like the
- 31:17nutritionist, so the first thing I did in my nutritionist is we
- 31:20did a food diary. So it'd be like, OK, what's your
- 31:22training? And then what are you eating
- 31:23outside that training? So it initially kind of
- 31:25highlight, OK, that's not enough or you need more here or you're
- 31:30eating a lot of this. So I didn't realize at the time
- 31:32when I started with my nutritionist, I was eating a lot
- 31:35of convenience food. So I would stop on the way to
- 31:37work and get say, like an M&S meal deal.
- 31:40And in my head I was thinking, oh, there's more suspensors like
- 31:43that, must be good quality. I'm paying.
- 31:45I don't know, £10 for my, for my lunch.
- 31:47It must be all right. I'm having a like a punnett of
- 31:49fruit or whatever. And he's going well enough for
- 31:53starters. He needs to cut those out
- 31:55because the amount of stabilizers and things in those
- 31:58and you're having them every single day.
- 31:59And then you're and then you're wondering why you're getting gut
- 32:01problems on your runs. So that was a big thing, just
- 32:03cutting out foods that aren't easily digestible or aren't good
- 32:08for your gut. So just working on a bit more of
- 32:10a whole food diet and then also kind of periodizing my nutrition
- 32:14around the different days of the week.
- 32:16So Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays were the harder days.
- 32:19So they were the days where I would almost do like a mini carb
- 32:22load the night before ready for that day and then be really
- 32:25smashing the carbs during the day.
- 32:28So I drink mixes during the runs or gels during the runs and then
- 32:32really kind of making those session days really carb focus.
- 32:35So I always thought that'd be like, do a session, come home,
- 32:39have chicken, rice and veg in between the sessions.
- 32:43But actually the best thing for me ended up being I'd come home
- 32:46from the session and just have say like rice and honey,
- 32:50basically focus on carbs. And then after the second run of
- 32:53the day, that's when you smash the protein and veg, if that
- 32:55makes sense. So you want to try and keep it
- 32:57as like clean carbs as possible in between the double run days.
- 33:00But then also, I guess like to kind of summarize because I, I
- 33:04go off tangents all the time, is he just basically gave me like
- 33:08macro numbers. He's going to look for the
- 33:09amount of exercise you're doing, you need XYZ, you need 8 to 10
- 33:13grams of carbohydrates per day, like especially on those more
- 33:18intense days. And then you can be protein
- 33:20numbers, fat numbers, because fat is a really underrated thing
- 33:23as well. Like people don't get enough fat
- 33:25in or at least the healthy fats. So yeah, they were the main
- 33:29things, just address the flaws. And then my gut problems went
- 33:33away. So yeah, magic.
- 33:36And with the group, did you actually find out what the gut
- 33:40problems were because pull up when and what period of your
- 33:44running was that that was after London and you're building up
- 33:48for was it Berlin or something like that?
- 33:51Yeah, so I was building up for Berlin and I would basically
- 33:55every single run without fail, I would need to stop for at least
- 33:58one or two shits basically, which is, you know, it's like
- 34:02it's quite common to know like every now and again, have a long
- 34:05run where you need to stop, stop and use the loo.
- 34:07Like that's not not an uncommon thing, but every single run.
- 34:10So then I'd be stressing about it.
- 34:12Like I'd have a marathon session.
- 34:14It's like I've got a 4 by 5 Kayla, where are the public
- 34:17toilets? Because I'm going to need to
- 34:18stop. And that's like, that wasn't
- 34:20something that I'd ever thought would come into my brain when it
- 34:22comes to these sorts of sessions.
- 34:25So yeah. And then I did Berlin, had the
- 34:28exact same thing. I did the big half.
- 34:30That was the race that affected the most.
- 34:32I don't know if you, if you saw the video.
- 34:34I did the the big half in September and I was moving well,
- 34:39probably on for a 6566 half marathon.
- 34:42But I had to stop twice to use the low otherwise like it was
- 34:45going to be very embarrassing. So I ended up running about 73 I
- 34:50think. And then yeah, carried on.
- 34:52I had the same problems up to Valencia and then everything
- 34:55started to click again afterwards once I kind of
- 34:57started working with the nutritionist.
- 35:01And I can only imagine how frustrating that would be
- 35:04because like mechanically, like you're running well, like it's
- 35:08perfect. It's no, you've no issues
- 35:10running wise. It was like your belly just
- 35:13couldn't hack the stress you're putting under.
- 35:17Yeah, and I'll say like you do change your running style when
- 35:19you need, when you need to pass stalls basically like it is, it
- 35:23is an uncomfortable thing. You you look like you're wearing
- 35:25a nappy, like it's it isn't comfortable to run.
- 35:27It's not like you can just kind of put it to the back of your
- 35:29brain. Like it's, it's such a feeling
- 35:31that does take over your whole your whole mentality.
- 35:34It's it's kind of weird. No.
- 35:38Cool. So yeah, London 20/20/25 this
- 35:44was arguably you're out of all your PBS, your 216, it's
- 35:49probably the one you're most proud of, correct?
- 35:52Yeah, yeah. I think if he'd asked me that, I
- 35:55don't know, eight months ago, I probably said differently.
- 35:58But I think since I've had bad marathons, I've realized
- 36:01actually how much it takes for a marathon to go well.
- 36:04And now actually, yeah, that 216 becomes better and better every
- 36:07day, basically. And how did London come about?
- 36:12Because I feel like watching you is sort of out of the blue.
- 36:15You were sort of like the five K 10K, you dabble in 1/2 marathon.
- 36:20And then like, how did London come about or where did the idea
- 36:25of a marathon come about? Because I know personally for
- 36:27me, like I, I don't have any thought of doing a marathon at
- 36:29the moment. I'm just totally focused 5K10K
- 36:32trying to get faster at that. Where did the marathon sort of
- 36:35seep into your head? So I'd been going to watch my
- 36:38dad do it for a few years prior to that and he would run his PV
- 36:423/17. So I'd go with him to like
- 36:44Manchester or go with him to London because that was back
- 36:48when London was also in October. So he was able to do like London
- 36:51in October and then it got changed to April.
- 36:53So it ended the April 1. So I really wanted to do it
- 36:57based off watching, watching my dad do it and just seeing like
- 37:00how hard it was. And he would just like, you
- 37:01know, grit it out. And that was like quite
- 37:03inspiring. And I was meant to do it in
- 37:042024. And that's when I was, that's
- 37:07when I had the injury in my final year of studies.
- 37:10So I did delayed my, my entry for 2025, didn't know if I'd be
- 37:15fit in time. And then yeah, nine months
- 37:17later, I was then if it's ever been smashed on the marathon.
- 37:22But yeah, just I've always watched them like the majors.
- 37:25I'll get up in the middle of the night.
- 37:26So watch the watch the major like coverage.
- 37:29I just love it. IE breathe and sleep marathon
- 37:32running on on YouTube. And I remember you came out with
- 37:36the video and you're like, OK, break 2:20.
- 37:39And you're even a bit hesitant about saying the 220 because
- 37:43like breaking 220 and the marathon is such a massive,
- 37:45massive thing. And you're a bit hesitant.
- 37:48And then as the videos were going along, you could see
- 37:52you're like, wait a minute, I could be on for faster here.
- 37:54And so then, but I you never would have thought like a 216
- 38:00was going to happened or occur, but what was your plan going
- 38:05into London like you didn't or did you plan to run to 2:16?
- 38:10So I definitely didn't plan to run 216, but at the time I was
- 38:13being kind of not coached, but definitely mentored by Ellis
- 38:17Cross, who obviously run 210 in Seville earlier this year.
- 38:19So top, top guy, like one of the nicest guys in the sport you'll
- 38:22ever meet. Not a bad button in that guy's
- 38:24body. But, and I said to him, I was
- 38:27like, boy, if I go out a little bit quicker, like what about 218
- 38:31pace? And he was like, whoa, chill
- 38:32out, chill out a SEC. Like you're changing the goal
- 38:36posts. Like that's one thing you
- 38:37shouldn't do is just don't, don't change the goal posts.
- 38:40Like really close. So still go out at 69 to 6930
- 38:45just ahead of like 220 pace and then basically see what happens
- 38:50from then. So we had a bit of a bit of an
- 38:51agreement that basically the 1st 10 Ki would be conservative, a
- 38:55marathon pace, 10 to 30 Ki would kind of really look into that,
- 38:59lock into that marathon pace. And then the last 10 to 12 Ki
- 39:02would really kind of then try and wind it up, which is exactly
- 39:05what I did. So ended up being a negative
- 39:07splitting by about a minute, minute, 10 seconds.
- 39:11But yeah, partially Alice's help just keep me dialed in because
- 39:14maybe if I had gone out at 216 pace, maybe I wouldn't have run
- 39:17to 16. I would have run to 22.
- 39:19But yeah. What?
- 39:22At what point of the race did you know?
- 39:24Like Jenny Mac? I'm on one here.
- 39:26Like when did it click? It's, it's so I had a really
- 39:31fortunate day on London Marathon because because of the weather
- 39:35and just the British field of, of London Marathon last year
- 39:39wasn't that stacked. Whereas this year is like
- 39:43absolutely like, like ridiculous.
- 39:45The amount of good runners running this year is crazy.
- 39:47I'm really, really gutted to to not be there.
- 39:49But I think when I got to about halfway and you start passing
- 39:54people that you recognize or you see their names on the back of
- 39:57their bib, because the elites have their name on the back as
- 39:59well as the front. So you you'd run past them and
- 40:02you've got, I recognize that person.
- 40:03Oh bloody hell. Oh, but either he's having a bad
- 40:06day or I'm having a great day and then suddenly pass someone
- 40:08else. And then there was friends that
- 40:11I knew that were like in really, really good shape.
- 40:13And then I've maybe passed them and I was like rough, like
- 40:16something's happening here and then.
- 40:19Yeah, I don't know. It just just held on for dear
- 40:21life. The hardest part was there's a
- 40:24tunnel near, near the finish. I'd say it's probably about 5K
- 40:27out from the finish and it's completely quiet.
- 40:30There's no spectators in there. That's quite difficult because
- 40:32you go from all this noise and then you go in there and it's
- 40:35like, I don't know, you've entered life.
- 40:37The matrix is so strange. And then that's when you, I
- 40:41don't know, then your, your thoughts become really loud and
- 40:44you're like, oh, wow, actually this really hurts.
- 40:46I want to stop now. So yeah, no, I don't know.
- 40:50It's such a crazy day and that I I'm not really one to watch my
- 40:53videos back, but that one I have watched back quite a few times
- 40:56because yeah, it does give me goosebumps.
- 40:59And then what did you go through halfway in what time?
- 41:03I went for in 69 dead 10900 and then I ran 10752 for the for the
- 41:08second-half. Yeah, that is a crazy fake off
- 41:11man. That is, yeah.
- 41:17It's probably. The best?
- 41:19It's tricky because everyone says the first half of London is
- 41:21like quicker because it's a bit downhill, but it doesn't make,
- 41:25it's not enough to make any difference.
- 41:27Like it's not a hilly marathon by any means.
- 41:31So yeah, I think if you just, if you're careful with your energy,
- 41:35then yeah, it's quite an easy course to never split on because
- 41:39then running down Embankment, we've got loads of, but loads of
- 41:42supporters either side, like cheering you on, you're running
- 41:45against the other runners for a certain period as well.
- 41:48Like that gives you a bit of a boost.
- 41:50And I don't know, that's that sort of stuff like really feeds
- 41:52into me and that's why I love British races.
- 41:54I would rather do a London than say I don't know, a Barcelona or
- 42:00something like that, you know? And come here when you cross the
- 42:04line like like what do you what even goes to your head like to
- 42:101650, you're like that was beyond best case scenario,
- 42:13probably being real like like what goes through your mind.
- 42:18To be honest, I just let out this like raw, like I didn't
- 42:20know. I was like, so it felt, I don't
- 42:23know, I just didn't know what to do.
- 42:25I felt emotional. I felt angry, but I also felt,
- 42:28like, ecstatic. I don't know.
- 42:30I just felt like this just massive wave of emotion.
- 42:33That's why I kind of interrupted.
- 42:34Keep Joey's interview. I don't know if you've seen the
- 42:36clip where I just basically roar and, like, keep Joey's, like, I
- 42:39don't know, doing his usual press, like, practice stuff.
- 42:45Yeah. And then and then I just started
- 42:46sobbing like, straight after because I just so emotionally
- 42:50drained. Like, the block had been
- 42:52difficult. Yeah.
- 42:55Just didn't expect it, Yeah. No, it was incredible.
- 42:59And come here. How long did it take you to
- 43:01recover from that? Like were you in bits the next
- 43:04day or like were you expecting to feel like you did?
- 43:08Like I know when you sort of have like a good experience in a
- 43:11race, sometimes the recovery is shorter, like it doesn't beat
- 43:14you up as much, but like, how did you pull up from it?
- 43:18All up really well, in fact, I like basically I didn't get
- 43:21straight back to training, but pretty much I raised a 10K the
- 43:25week after I did about 80 to 90 miles, I think the week after.
- 43:31But at that time it felt great. But then four to six weeks
- 43:35later, then I felt dreadful. I felt like I hadn't given my
- 43:38body any recovery time. Just probably burned out.
- 43:40So that's what I guess if anyone takes anything away from this,
- 43:44from this absolute waffle that I'm giving out here is like,
- 43:48even if you think you don't need to recover from a marathon, you
- 43:52do you. Absolutely.
- 43:55Yeah. And umm, do you feel like for
- 43:58the coming for the rest of the year?
- 43:59Do you feel like, like I know there's a guy Brett Robinson in
- 44:04Australia and he's been at the marathon for ages and he's after
- 44:08pulling it back now and he's after going back to basic back
- 44:10there to track, try and get the speed.
- 44:12Do you feel like doing marathon after marathon after marathon is
- 44:16the right way to do it? Because from me personally, I
- 44:19think like marathon, then go back down to do your 5K10K, get
- 44:22the speed back that just keep on tapping into that resource.
- 44:25Like what's your plan now for sort of the rest of the year?
- 44:28I think, I think exactly what Brett is doing is like the way
- 44:31that you should do it. And you see every now and again
- 44:34people like fill assessment, they'll go back and do like a 3K
- 44:36indoors, you know, like really just tapping back into that top
- 44:39of your pyramid. And that's what I would, that's
- 44:42what I plan to do in this kind of return to run is really start
- 44:45off with the shorter stuff, so less volume, higher intensity,
- 44:48and then kind of gradually building towards an autumn slash
- 44:51winter marathon, probably Valencia, haven't decided yet.
- 44:56But yeah, I naturally am dreadful at the the faster
- 44:59stuff. So I always tell myself, right,
- 45:02this summer I'm going to do a speed block.
- 45:04We're going to really focus on my top end speed.
- 45:06And then it comes actually doing the training and I am like, so
- 45:09not in it that I just revert to tight and just get back to like
- 45:12the marathon training. And that's the, I think if I
- 45:15really want to level up, that's what I have to do, just force
- 45:17myself to do the stuff that I don't want to do, which is in
- 45:19this case the the speed work. Yeah, I guess.
- 45:24And I done my first ever Elctic session there earlier this year
- 45:29and it was only like 10, four hundreds or something.
- 45:32But you're just, it's the most painful thing I've ever
- 45:36experienced. And then after the session, you
- 45:38just you're just hit with this massive like a headache and you
- 45:41just cannot move. It is.
- 45:43You're like, why do I put myself through this?
- 45:46Yeah, exactly. And and my my girlfriend better,
- 45:49she has a fear of of sick. So if I go and do any other
- 45:52sessions and I'm like potentially going to be thrown
- 45:54up at the end. That's not fun for either of us.
- 45:57Got really, I don't know, dial it in not, not 100% effort, just
- 46:01like 98% effort I think. Because she's very good in the
- 46:05camera. Well, yeah, well, I think so.
- 46:09Bless her heart. She's she had a few comments on,
- 46:12on like some of the YouTube chat, YouTube videos, because
- 46:14she'd been helping me massively with the videography and and
- 46:17someone would say like, oh, like you need to stabilize the
- 46:19camera. Like, oh, I got nauseous from
- 46:21like your, your videography and bless her.
- 46:23Like if, if they said that to me, that would bounce off me
- 46:25because I've done it so long, but I just don't care, you know?
- 46:28But bless her heart, she thought she was doing me a favour, like
- 46:31trying to help me make these videos better.
- 46:33And then like, I don't know, Dave 1234 on YouTube has
- 46:38commented something mean, like unnecessarily.
- 46:40And yeah, it's just, it's unnecessary.
- 46:43But yeah, I think he's really good at it.
- 46:46That's the type of stuff that annoys me so much because I
- 46:48consume so much YouTube and like you're like as soon as your
- 46:53videos come out I'm stray on it. A personal favorite of mine now
- 46:56is the dog cat I call a dog Cam where she views zooms into all
- 47:00the dogs at the races she loves, I love.
- 47:02That she's not massively, she's not massively into running, but
- 47:06she loves like dogs and animals. So she'll so that's what kind of
- 47:09keeps her entertained while I'm doing the race.
- 47:12If she can't get footage and just like, yeah, exactly.
- 47:16Yeah. She would just get as many dog
- 47:17like dog videos as possible. Bless her.
- 47:21No, I love it, love it. And it helps when someone's in
- 47:24it with you as well. I think it just makes the makes
- 47:28the journey a lot easier because like people think running is an
- 47:31individual sport, it definitely, definitely isn't.
- 47:34And you need a good, good squad around you ready to help you.
- 47:38Yeah, definitely. I think if I was going on like a
- 47:41solo training camp, I would not enjoy it anywhere near as much
- 47:43as I think I would because, yeah, just running when it's
- 47:48completely solo. And I guess that's one reason
- 47:51why I built that, like, try to build this online community
- 47:53because then you don't feel as alone in this, in this sport,
- 47:58even if it's like, yeah, like online friends, I suppose.
- 48:02And you run with Is it Tonbridge?
- 48:06Tonebridge, the black and white one.
- 48:09Yeah, So Tunbridge acing. Yeah.
- 48:11It's like, it's like a Navy blue, like stripes across the
- 48:14chest. Yeah, Yeah.
- 48:15So I, I was running for in Victory's Kent.
- 48:18That's my like boyhood club and that was when I was back home in
- 48:21kind of Canterbury way. And then when I went to uni I
- 48:24moved to Maidstone, which is just outside Tunbridge and
- 48:26Tunbridge AC are like a like a top five national like club in
- 48:31the UK. And I really wanted the
- 48:33opportunities to participate in like some of the relay events
- 48:36and stuff. So I moved, moved clubs and now
- 48:39I've moved again. Like I live in Bury St.
- 48:42Edmunds now, which is near near Suffolk.
- 48:44What is in Suffolk? So there's loads of clubs
- 48:47locally but I won't move club again because I don't know if it
- 48:51was a bit sneaky to keep moving clubs.
- 48:54And do you have a group there or do you do a lot of your your
- 48:58training? Solo.
- 49:00So I do 95% of my training solo. There is a group here that's
- 49:03called the Treaty Trappers, what they call themselves.
- 49:07So it's just like, yeah, just a really like a great group of
- 49:10basically in a nice way possible.
- 49:13It's like working dads. Like they're they're, they're
- 49:16blokes that have full time jobs, but they love to run.
- 49:20So they're they're great. You're looking at kind of like
- 49:21229 marathoners as the as the top of the the group, which is
- 49:25great for the easy runs and, and some of the longer runs.
- 49:29But yeah, when I'm doing the sessions, I do have to kind of
- 49:32kind of head off on my own, which is, which is absolutely
- 49:34fine. You know, like matching pace
- 49:36with someone. It's like it's, it's quite
- 49:38difficult. So, so yeah, no, that's the,
- 49:42that's the local group. They're lovely, lovely bikes.
- 49:44Really welcomed being to the local running scene.
- 49:48But yeah, there isn't really like a local club as such that
- 49:50I've been training with. Your current training setup, I
- 49:55know a while back you said you're coached by Ben Connor and
- 50:00love his stuff. He actually he where I when I go
- 50:03to Spain to train, he is like really, really a close area to
- 50:08where. So I'm very familiar with his
- 50:10trying to follow Monster Ravi and all.
- 50:12And what's your current setup like and what's yeah this year?
- 50:17Yeah. So I asked Ben to start coach me
- 50:20I think last year around October, I think.
- 50:23So like kind of into Valencia and then since since Valencia
- 50:26and I kind of got back into training, I realized that I
- 50:28wanted to get back to the high volume training because that's
- 50:31what I love doing. So sadly said goodbye to to Ben
- 50:34and Lily because I, I knew realistically no coaches can
- 50:36reset and made the sort of volume that I wanted to be
- 50:38training at. So it's quite funny actually,
- 50:40just before I said goodbye, just before I got injured, I've sent
- 50:44Ben a long message. Like I really appreciate all
- 50:47your help. You've been so, so kind and
- 50:48helpful. But I just, I need to go back to
- 50:51kind of self coaching for the for the time being, purely
- 50:54because my schedule is hectic. So only I know what I can do on
- 50:58certain days, But also I want to do more mileage than is ever
- 51:02safe for you to prescribe me basically.
- 51:05And Ben was super understanding, but the one underlying message
- 51:07he said to me was like, you're doing great, but mileage isn't
- 51:11everything. And like, just be careful.
- 51:12And then literally like a week after picked on my stress
- 51:15response about time. So yeah, Ben was right, I was
- 51:21wrong. And yeah, definitely got my tail
- 51:23between my legs. I feel like you never know, like
- 51:29you learn more from your mistakes.
- 51:31Mileage is important. See, the Japanese like their
- 51:35mileage crazy. And you never know your limits
- 51:38until you cross that line. Yeah.
- 51:41So I feel like, yeah, he might be right now, but you never, you
- 51:45never would have known if you didn't cross the line.
- 51:48Exactly, exactly. And that's definitely the
- 51:50viewpoint that I hold. And then I had a conversation
- 51:53with with Phil assessment after, after, well, after I announced
- 51:57the injury and stuff. And I just said, well, I think
- 51:58maybe the 25260 KA week was a little bit too much.
- 52:02And he was like, yeah, you're probably right.
- 52:04But the high mileage is still really important.
- 52:06So don't just like sack it off basically.
- 52:08So what I'll probably do is once I get back up to kind of like
- 52:11full fitness is maybe 160 to 200 K running and then just
- 52:15supplement the rest with the bike and just really focus on
- 52:19session quality. And yeah, maybe I'll get back to
- 52:24that sort of mileage in the future, even if it's only for
- 52:26like a short period, like 4 weeks as part of a marathon
- 52:28block or something. But yeah, doing it for 12 weeks
- 52:31straight maybe not the most sensible thing in the.
- 52:34Yeah, I, I love my day off. Every, every Friday I have a day
- 52:39off. But I feel once you get into the
- 52:41routine of doing something twice a day, when you don't do it,
- 52:46you're like, Oh my God, what am I doing with my life?
- 52:48Like I feel like you need to be doing it once you've done it for
- 52:51a period of time. Yeah, when I when I got injured,
- 52:54I felt like a drug addict that having withdrawal symptoms, like
- 52:58I have been getting bad headaches.
- 53:01I've been getting like swollen legs because my body's used to
- 53:05running for three hours a day and it's not doing it.
- 53:07And because of the stress, because of the nature of my
- 53:09injury, I'm not really allowed to do anything for the first
- 53:12week to two weeks. Like no exercise at all.
- 53:14So I feel so unproductive, so lazy.
- 53:18I'm eating everything in the fridge because I'm bored.
- 53:22It's like, yeah, it's just, it's been a nightmare.
- 53:25But as you say, like if you don't, if you don't try these
- 53:28things, you don't find, you don't find out what is your,
- 53:31what is your limit. So now I know that 202110220K
- 53:35last year for London worked 250 to 260 this year hasn't worked.
- 53:40So that's obviously the ceiling. So I need to come back to kind
- 53:43of what I was doing last year. Yeah, I think it just has run as
- 53:47we always want more dummy. We always, we're obviously
- 53:49chasing the next thing. Even though it's not the best
- 53:53thing for us, we always want more and more and more like
- 53:55complete, so relatively. So for the year ahead, we can
- 54:00expect to see you in a winter marathon.
- 54:03Will you do some track races come end of summer?
- 54:08If I'm sick, maybe, yeah. I think for me the track is one
- 54:12of those things that I have to be fit to do it.
- 54:14I don't mind doing Rd. races if I'm not fit.
- 54:17I hate racing on the track. If I'm not fit because I'm not
- 54:19in, I don't enjoy it massively anyway.
- 54:21So then if you're going to put in like the mix that you'll
- 54:24maybe not performing to how you'd like to perform, I don't
- 54:27know. It's just it just doesn't make
- 54:29me feel good. And that's ultimately walk
- 54:30running. It's about right.
- 54:31We do it to make our feel ourselves feel good.
- 54:34So I'm looking at, I've got an entry for Great North Run in
- 54:38September and then I'd like to dabble in the local cross
- 54:42country scene. This hadn't done any of the
- 54:44local cross country races where I've moved to move to here.
- 54:47So they've got to do some new ones there and then I'd like to
- 54:50do yeah, some. So maybe, yeah, some Road 5 KS,
- 54:53Road 10 KS and building towards them.
- 54:56Then hopefully Valencia that haven't decided yet.
- 55:01Yeah, yeah. Because I feel like I've always
- 55:03compared my times to you. So when you made that jump there
- 55:09last year, I was like, shit, he's after again, he's way
- 55:12better than me now. So I feel like we're very
- 55:14comparable. So and when you set your goals
- 55:16for the year, like you, you, you break 14, I feel like that's
- 55:21again, it's a massive thing in in running.
- 55:25And I feel like, yeah, you just need the race and you get it.
- 55:29So I'd love to see you doing the five KS and 10 KS.
- 55:33Appreciate that. Yeah, I definitely want to
- 55:35break, break 14 this year. So that's definitely going to be
- 55:38still a goal. That's on my cars.
- 55:39Obviously I didn't I didn't have it on my in my deck of cars.
- 55:43I was going to get injured this year or not this sort of type of
- 55:46injury that's going to basically wipe out a month.
- 55:50But I guess I'll just count my lucky stars.
- 55:52It's not a full blown stress fracture.
- 55:55It's a bump in the road rather than a massive pothole that
- 55:58you'd see quite a lot around here.
- 56:02Again, it's so it shows that you know your body like you could.
- 56:05You could feel that this was coming.
- 56:07So you pull the pen early. Whereas other people like
- 56:10they're not as in tune with their body, so they might have
- 56:13kept on running and running and then it turns into like a three
- 56:15month layoff. Yeah, the the thing I was kind
- 56:19of lived by with my job as well. Obviously being in this kind of
- 56:22the healthcare field is common. Things are common.
- 56:24And then I was getting uncommon pain in my leg, like a location
- 56:29that there's not much there. It wasn't a muscle tear, but I
- 56:32just could feel it wasn't a muscle tear and there's nothing
- 56:36else. There is bone and muscle in the
- 56:38middle of your middle of your quad.
- 56:40So yeah, I just, I knew something was wrong and I was
- 56:45all right. I cross trained for a week, got
- 56:46the MRI scan and it was, yeah, came back.
- 56:50There's a grade one stress response even after a week of no
- 56:53running. So even after it died down a
- 56:55bit, it was still still grade 18 centimeters long.
- 57:00So yeah, I gave Dean Miller a message.
- 57:02We had a, we had a long chat and then yeah, got kind of like a
- 57:05four to six week rehab plan of frost training from Thursday.
- 57:10So I'll be back cycling from Thursday.
- 57:12I've got a turbo trainer arriving on Thursday as well,
- 57:14which is, which is cool. So I can do it from home, which
- 57:18is, which is really cool. And then I can start, I can
- 57:20start running again from basically end of April, early
- 57:23May. But but my sister's running
- 57:25London, so it's going to be really cool to be able to watch
- 57:27her do her first marathon as a spectator rather than me
- 57:32running. Man, you always, you'll come
- 57:35back stronger from the injuries. That's what I always say.
- 57:37Your body just needed a break and you're always like you see
- 57:39how everyone comes back stronger from injury.
- 57:41So I can't wait. Hopefully if you do winter
- 57:44marathon, I cannot wait to see this build.
- 57:47Yeah, it's going to be as well. Hopefully it'll be my best yet.
- 57:50And I've got, I feel like this time now because it's been, it's
- 57:52been a year since I've ran 216 at London, I feel like now I've
- 57:55got something to prove. I need to back it up with
- 57:57another good performance. Like I'm not a one hit wonder.
- 58:01So yeah. But like you're not because like
- 58:05you've got the other your 5K10K times back it up, I feel.
- 58:09Yeah, that's another thing that people you can nearly read too
- 58:13much into like because you've done so well in London, there's
- 58:17that added bit of pressure like, oh, I need to like the better
- 58:20that my next one. Whereas I think just take it and
- 58:24just roll with it like the 100% like 216 is only is only the
- 58:29floor. You've got a lot more to work
- 58:31up. So a.
- 58:33Lot. On the on our daily podcast or
- 58:37weekly podcasts, we have this section called Double Trouble
- 58:40where it's like sort of a hot take that like sort of divides
- 58:47opinions basically. So Ryan always goes at the
- 58:52triathletes and saying they're just averaging everything and
- 58:54all this sort of stuff. I, I wouldn't agree with that at
- 58:57all. But do you have any like Andrew?
- 58:59I think Andrew Kostkin said the long run is overrated.
- 59:03What do you have any like hot takes like a double trouble?
- 59:07Oh, OK. Hot takes.
- 59:11Yeah, I don't, I don't think so. I feel like I'm a pretty high.
- 59:20I feel like I'm not very, what's the word, controversial.
- 59:24I'm not a very controversial person.
- 59:25So I can kind of go with go with the flow quite a lot.
- 59:30OK. I don't know if this is a hot
- 59:31take. I would say the people that do
- 59:35the best on social media, and this doesn't include me, I feel
- 59:38like they have to have something like weird about them.
- 59:41They have to have something a little bit, you know, strange
- 59:44that. And they're the people that I
- 59:45love watching the most. I know like, like advanced
- 59:47Japan, for example. He's like, he's like, properly,
- 59:50properly weird. And he would not mind me saying
- 59:52that, like, I was like the people that do the best.
- 59:56There's like a correlation with kind of how weird they are.
- 59:58I don't know if that's a hot take, but yeah.
- 1:00:00OK, OK. I feel like I'm getting more of
- 1:00:03that in Ben Felton's videos. I feel like he's sort of coming
- 1:00:06out a little bit more. Some of the things he.
- 1:00:08Does now, now that Ben, now that Meg is doing the video, the
- 1:00:12filming for him and he can stand away from the camera, like more
- 1:00:15of his like personalities coming in.
- 1:00:17And I'm definitely here for it. And I think I've kind of tried
- 1:00:20to do the same when my girlfriend's been filming.
- 1:00:22It's like because I'm suddenly then talking to her when she's
- 1:00:25holding the camera, more of my personality comes out than if I
- 1:00:27was just holding the camera talking to myself.
- 1:00:30Yeah, Yeah, Yeah. No, that's a good one.
- 1:00:32No, I like that one. I like that.
- 1:00:33I like that and. Yeah, I don't know, go on.
- 1:00:38I was going to say no, I was just going to say like, I don't
- 1:00:40know if it's like if it's true, but that's just, I don't know,
- 1:00:42the people that I find the best and the ones that are generally
- 1:00:45like the biggest in terms of like numbers of following.
- 1:00:48I'm not like Hugo Fry, like he's just, he's bash it like he's
- 1:00:51just crazy. And people and people love it.
- 1:00:54You know, they like to see elements of themselves in the
- 1:00:57content creator. So if you've if you've got
- 1:00:59someone who's just a straight back, like down the middle and
- 1:01:01nothing really interesting about them, they're probably not going
- 1:01:03to do do as well, even if they're a great runner.
- 1:01:07You know, like you see the elites, like it doesn't matter
- 1:01:09how good you are if the content is dreadful, like you're not
- 1:01:11going to get as many. I don't know, like, I guess an
- 1:01:14example would be like Josh Kerr, right?
- 1:01:16He's like really, really fantastic runner, but his
- 1:01:19YouTube doesn't do anywhere near as well as Jacob because he's
- 1:01:22not weird. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:01:26Yeah. So I don't know.
- 1:01:28Yeah, when you get Yakka back on the YouTube, I loved his some of
- 1:01:31his stuff. Yeah, yeah, I was.
- 1:01:33I really liked it, Yeah. And you're supported by Adidas
- 1:01:39and Star Fitness? What's your SO?
- 1:01:43I feel like Adidas they've such good ratio.
- 1:01:46Like what's your daily? I love shoes.
- 1:01:48I just love the running shoes. What's your like?
- 1:01:50Go to Adidas daily trainer. I've been using the either SL
- 1:01:55for basically everything that is in the session, so like easy
- 1:01:58runs, steady run, like even some tempos, long runs as well.
- 1:02:03And so that's a really good one. An underrated one in my opinion,
- 1:02:06is the Addy star Bydi think it stands for beyond your distance
- 1:02:10or something like that. That's quite a good one.
- 1:02:12It has got a plate in it, but it's not like you're like
- 1:02:15classic like red shoe kind of it's not super lightweight.
- 1:02:18It's a bit of like a like a clunky shoe.
- 1:02:20I quite like like a big clunky shoe, you know, like you're and
- 1:02:24I like you Super Blast or you're, you're Venera plus that
- 1:02:27type of feel like something there's a bit brick feeling on
- 1:02:30your foot, like I like that. And then they've just put out,
- 1:02:34bought out the Hyperboost Edge, which I haven't actually sadly
- 1:02:36been out to run in yet, obviously because of my injury.
- 1:02:39But walking around that feels really, really nice.
- 1:02:41And that's their kind of like super trainer, kind of like long
- 1:02:44runs, easy plodding. That's their that's their sort
- 1:02:46of shoe for that. So yeah, that's what I'd go
- 1:02:50ahead. That's the red and white one
- 1:02:53that looks like an old F50 nearly that's.
- 1:02:56Yeah, yeah, yeah, exactly. Yeah, it does it like an old
- 1:02:58F15, Yeah. Ah, yeah, I've seen that one
- 1:03:01again. There's so many.
- 1:03:03Like I feel like that's what shoe brands are doing now.
- 1:03:05They're nearly overwhelming you with all the different types of
- 1:03:08shoes. You don't have a clue.
- 1:03:10What shoe does wash like that evil SL?
- 1:03:13Like is it an easy day? Is it a tempo day?
- 1:03:15You can because you can use it for literally every.
- 1:03:18Yeah, yeah, exactly. I'd say like for me as well,
- 1:03:21like I kind of just put whatever I feel like feels the nicest on
- 1:03:25my feet, regardless of what category the shoot brand puts it
- 1:03:27into. So for example, like the Boston
- 1:03:2913, right, that's their that's their tempo shoe for me.
- 1:03:33I don't like running like quick in it.
- 1:03:35I feel like it's it's not good for running quick.
- 1:03:37So I would just do like a recovery run in it, like
- 1:03:39something nice and easy. It's nice and lightweight.
- 1:03:42Yeah, so cool. Cool.
- 1:03:46Oh cool, that's I think that's it from me and people can follow
- 1:03:52you on your Instagram, your YouTube.
- 1:03:55And are we going to keep on getting YouTube videos or will
- 1:03:57they be a little a little low now?
- 1:04:00No, they will be. My plan is to try and make some
- 1:04:03sort of like road to recovery series or something like that
- 1:04:05where we're kind of documenting the journey, like what the
- 1:04:08milestones and also just kind of talking about like what phases
- 1:04:11of the stress response is. So like for example, coming up
- 1:04:15to this Thursday before I start cross training, I need to be
- 1:04:18able to do 20 hops on my right leg pain free.
- 1:04:22And if I can't do that, then I can't cycle on the bike.
- 1:04:24You know, things like that, that people maybe don't know about
- 1:04:27certain injuries. So just trying to document
- 1:04:29outside of it really. That'll be so people will get so
- 1:04:33much from that because even the likes of like Clayton Young, he
- 1:04:36pulled a pin on his and like, you sort of want to see what
- 1:04:40they're doing when they're injured, the rebuild.
- 1:04:42So I think that, yeah, people will get so much from that.
- 1:04:46Yeah, yeah, that's the that's the plan.
- 1:04:47Like this week I haven't filmed anything because I have been
- 1:04:50doing nothing. I've done the odd bit of
- 1:04:52stretching, but that's literally I can't even go for a walk.
- 1:04:55So it's boring. But as yeah, from next week when
- 1:04:58I'm back on the bike, kind of dabble in Swift like I have
- 1:05:01never done Swift before. So I'm going to start start a
- 1:05:04bit of that as well. So yeah.
- 1:05:08Knock. Oh, come here.
- 1:05:10Well, thank you very, very much for coming on and I cannot wait
- 1:05:15to see the rebuild. And they're more excite and I
- 1:05:18feel and yeah, all the best in the in the coming year.
- 1:05:23OK, man. Thank you so much.
- 1:05:25Have a have a good rest of your Easter weekend.
- 1:05:28Cheers my yeah, eat loads of Easter eggs.
- 1:05:31Still at me. See you man.
- 1:05:33Good luck. Bye bye.
