Latest / Elon Musk Podcast / Elon's Twitter 2.0 Explained
Transcript
- 0:00Elon Musk but Twitter, 445 billion dollars and ever since
- 0:04the purchase it's been kind of shady.
- 0:06There's been things going on behind the scenes and nobody
- 0:08knows about. There's been tweets sent from
- 0:11Elan that are cryptic. There has been things that Elon
- 0:14is done that have really made people mad, like letting
- 0:17controversial figures back onto the platform that have been
- 0:20banned and kicked off for a while.
- 0:22But now we have the first official statement from Twitter
- 0:27itself from the company, from Twitter to point, Oh, this is
- 0:30from Twitter Inc, blog and I'm going to read you some of it and
- 0:34we're going to talk about it a little bit.
- 0:35I want you to bring up some points if you can in the
- 0:38comments of your podcast app. If you have comments on there,
- 0:41let me know what you think about this stuff because I think it's
- 0:44an important step for Ilan and for the future of Twitter.
- 0:47So here it is, the title of it is Twitter 2.0, our continued
- 0:52commitment to the public conversation.
- 0:54Okay, so that that alone says, okay, we're going to be helping
- 0:57out the people in the Conversation, we're going to
- 1:01commit to you and this is this is our new statement.
- 1:05So it says Twitter's mission is to promote and protect the
- 1:07public conversation to be the Town Square of the internet.
- 1:11We've always understood that to reach this goal.
- 1:13We must give everyone the power to create and share ideas and
- 1:16information instantly. Without barriers, today, we are
- 1:20a new company embarking on a new chapter, but our steadfast
- 1:24commitment to this Mission has not changed.
- 1:26In fact, we are better positioned to realize their
- 1:29ambitions. It's than ever before.
- 1:32And they go on to say, we've always understood that our
- 1:35business and revenue are interconnected with our mission.
- 1:38They rely on each other brand, safety is only possible when
- 1:41human safety is the top priority, all of this remains
- 1:46true today. So let's take a step back and go
- 1:50over what they're seeing here. And we got to this paragraph.
- 1:53In particular just recently, a lot of big-name huge ad Spenders
- 2:00Left the platform. They didn't know what's going
- 2:02on. They don't know what's going to
- 2:04go on with Twitter and the next month, two months, three months,
- 2:07four months, six months a year, possibly.
- 2:10So they said we're going to step back a little bit.
- 2:13We're going to, we're going to pause our ad spend on Twitter
- 2:15and then we're going to see where this goes.
- 2:17You know, maybe maybe he'll on drives it into the ground, who
- 2:21knows? That's what these people are
- 2:23thinking, you know, the ad Spenders, they don't know what's
- 2:25going to happen. So took all the money away and
- 2:28then Ilan, according to the financial times.
- 2:29X head called up. And also talked with numerous
- 2:33people in the the large corporations, ask them why they
- 2:37took their money out and then he yelled at them according to the
- 2:40financial times. So of course this is sort of I
- 2:43think this is damage control. I think this is what they're
- 2:46doing. They're like hey we need to have
- 2:47a corporate facing blog post about damage control you know?
- 2:52Because if Ilan has been doing these things and driving away
- 2:54advertisers, there's no way they're going to make the money
- 2:57that they used to make it if he saw the numbers.
- 3:00Before the buyout. And he's like, okay, we can make
- 3:02some money with this. That sounds great.
- 3:04I'm gonna buy this thing and then he buys it and then
- 3:07immediately all the money like half the money goes away.
- 3:10Now, he has to play catch-up, yes to do, damage control and I
- 3:14think that's what this second paragraph in the third paragraph
- 3:18are going to pertain to. So let's talk about this, third
- 3:21paragraph, and I'll read it out to you, so, you can get a better
- 3:24understanding of where Twitter is coming from, in the next next
- 3:29phase of Twitter 2.0 and this is where it gets a little bit dicey
- 3:33for Twitter because I think they're doing damage control on
- 3:36this next paragraph. So here it is in.
- 3:38This is from the Twitter blog. What has changed however is our
- 3:42approach to experimentation. As you've seen over the past
- 3:45several weeks, Twitter is embracing public testing.
- 3:48We believe that this open and transparent approach to
- 3:50Innovation is healthy as it enables us to move faster and
- 3:53gather user feedback in real-time, we believe that a
- 3:56service of this importance will benefit from feedback, Scale
- 4:00that there is value in being open about our experiments and
- 4:04what we are learning. We do all of this work with one
- 4:07goal in mind to improve Twitter for our customers Partners in
- 4:11the people who use it across the world, okay?
- 4:14Now let's take a step back. This is getting interesting is
- 4:17getting fun so they say what has changed?
- 4:20You know, we're just testing things out in the open.
- 4:22Now the normal way for software development and testing is to
- 4:26test things in a small group then, In that group, The expand
- 4:31the group more, and then have the engineers in between fix
- 4:34things and tweak things, and then eventually you to release
- 4:38it to the public, right? There's a release schedule for a
- 4:40reason. People have been doing this for
- 4:42a very long time. Now, if Twitter was actually
- 4:44doing an open testing schedule, they would have said, so in the,
- 4:49in the future, in the beginning of all of this stuff, because if
- 4:52you're doing that to your user base, you have to announce it to
- 4:57them like, Hey, we're going to be doing these certain And
- 5:00please don't get upset by them. We're going to be testing some
- 5:03things out. We understand that you know
- 5:05there's going to be some things that will break but it's for the
- 5:08better just trust us. It's easy to communicate that
- 5:11it's easy to communicate that and as a web developer myself,
- 5:14I've been developing software apps websites for the last 25,
- 5:1930 years. And there's been no instance
- 5:22where out a live product like Twitter, especially with
- 5:25millions and millions of daily users that you would ever test
- 5:29anything in an Open environment and I'm not Elon Musk, right?
- 5:32And Elon might be onto something here where you test everything
- 5:35out in the open and it's a new way to develop things which is
- 5:38totally cool. If it works and if it does work,
- 5:41that would be great. But if you're an Advertiser, the
- 5:44people that Elon relies on, for all of his money coming in to
- 5:49Twitter, you look at this, as some sort of weird experiment,
- 5:53and something that would shake up the platform and something,
- 5:56where people on the platform that are already on there,
- 5:59they're seeing this Disruption. And you might get a little bit
- 6:02spooked by all of this. Now, as a developer myself, I
- 6:06wouldn't personally do this. I would, of course, test these
- 6:10systems in the background to a small test.
- 6:13Make it bigger, make it bigger, release it to the public.
- 6:15This show is brought to you by backblaze.
- 6:18I use back place to back up my podcast.
- 6:20My video files, all of my writing stuff at all, my photos.
- 6:24And you get unlimited computer backup, for Macs and PCs for
- 6:27just $7 a month. You can back up your Your own
- 6:30documents photos videos, drawings projects, all of your
- 6:33data and access your backed up data from anywhere in the world
- 6:37using the web app and you can access the files on your mobile
- 6:40to iOS Android apps all covered. And this is the cool part.
- 6:43This is my favorite part. You can restore it by mail, a
- 6:45hard drive will come to your house with all your data shipped
- 6:49to your door. I could come to your business to
- 6:51and you can restore return refund program so you can buy a
- 6:54hard drive restore, send the hard drive back within 30 days
- 6:58and get a full refund. Basically, they ship you this
- 7:01hard drive and then you ship it back and you don't ever pay for
- 7:04it. Which is the perfect program for
- 7:06somebody who has huge files. You don't want to waste days and
- 7:09days, downloading terabytes and teraflops of data.

- 7:14files to bucks extra month, you can increase your retention
- 7:17history to one year, and I use it for all of my video.

- 8:11card required go there sign up I you with it it's really
- 8:15powerful. It is really easy to use so go
- 8:17to back place.com slash Ilan back plays.com Ilan
- 8:23backblaze.com, Ilan Etc. Same thing.
- 8:28Normal testing schedule. Cool, it would make sense, but
- 8:31of course, if you're an early phase startup, which Elan thinks
- 8:34Twitter 2.0 is and that's what he's running it.
- 8:37As you move really fast, you try things out and you break things,
- 8:43and then when you break things, you fix him.
- 8:45And I've been part of startups before, I've been part of many
- 8:48successful startups and in that time, when I'm building things
- 8:53in the very beginning of these startups, we try some stuff.
- 8:57We try some things that have never been tried before.
- 8:59We Try some things that aren't in the industry that we're in
- 9:02and see if they catch on. If they don't, we can them and
- 9:06we change them. So that's what happened with the
- 9:08blue check mark, you know, with the 8 dollar check mark.
- 9:11I think that's what happened is that they were trying something
- 9:14new out and with the millions and millions of daily active
- 9:17users, it got out of hand and they realize real quick.
- 9:22This is not a good idea, we can't just do this with no way
- 9:26of differentiating, a troll from a regular person.
- 9:29So I think that's where they're at with specially since they're
- 9:33working on it, like a start-up, they're building something
- 9:35completely new. It's a new system, it's Twitter
- 9:39but it's Twitter 2.0 where there's more things that are
- 9:43going to be happening in the future.
- 9:44They're going to be a bank. Basically they're going to be
- 9:47lets you transfer money between people.
- 9:49You're going to have your your chat.
- 9:51You're going to have your wall. You're going to have all sorts
- 9:54of fun things in Cryptid, chats and Cryptid messages, and also
- 9:58video and audio. We're going.
- 9:59Better podcasting on there is going to be better and also
- 10:02video playback is going to be much better too so they're going
- 10:04to be testing those things out in the wild and I think that's
- 10:07what they're doing right now with this.
- 10:09Check mark thing. So as a software developer I
- 10:12applaud them for trying new things but it also disrupts
- 10:16things that are already sort of a standard and with Evert izing,
- 10:20those people stepped back a little bit and now they're going
- 10:23to get the idea of what Twitter is doing in the future so they
- 10:28can make a real choice. It's about if they want to be
- 10:31part of this platform still or if they want to move on use
- 10:33their ad spend someplace else. All right, let's get back into
- 10:37some of the meat of this press release from Twitter.
- 10:40They go on to say, as we carry out this work, we want to assure
- 10:44you of a few things first. None of our policies have
- 10:47changed our approach to policy enforcement will rely more
- 10:51heavily on D, amplification of via violative content.
- 10:56Freedom of speech, but not freedom of reach.
- 11:00Our trust in safety, teams continues, its diligent work to
- 11:03keep the platform safe from hateful conduct abusive
- 11:07behavior. And any violation of Twitter's
- 11:10rules the team remains strong and well resource and automated
- 11:14detection plays an increasingly important role in eliminating
- 11:18abuse. The third bullet point.
- 11:20When urgent events manifest on the platform, we ensure that all
- 11:24content moderators have the guidance.
- 11:26They need to find in a dress violative.
- 11:29Tent. And here's the next one.
- 11:31As we improve our policies and processes bad acts.
- 11:34Actors also will develop new methods of disruption.
- 11:39This is not new. Our team of experts is
- 11:41constantly adapting to identify and diffuse threats and we are
- 11:45proud of our early results Impressions on violative content
- 11:49down over the past month, despite the growth, in overall
- 11:52usage on the platform. Finally, as we embark on this
- 11:55new Journey, we will make mistakes.
- 11:57We will learn. And we will also, Things right
- 12:00throughout will communicate openly with our users and
- 12:03customers to get and share your feedback as we build.
- 12:08So those are the main five bullet points that Twitter put
- 12:12in this press release. And I want to take a look kind
- 12:15of it. Every one of these in a, in a
- 12:18broader sense and discuss them. Because I think each one of them
- 12:22has its own Merit. And some of them, you can kind
- 12:25of see where the, the ad spend is it is all about.
- 12:29Damage control in a way. So that's, that's my take on.
- 12:32It is critical thinking, you think, okay?
- 12:34They're doing something good, though.
- 12:35They're open and they're honest about what they're trying to do.
- 12:38So, the first bullet point is that is it, none of their
- 12:41policies have changed. Everything's the same, our
- 12:43approach to policy enforcement will rely more heavily on D,
- 12:46amplification of violative content.
- 12:49Freedom of speech, but not freedom of reach.
- 12:51So none of their policies have changed.
- 12:53How do they enforce those policies?
- 12:55Well, that's the that's up in the air at this point.
- 12:58And they say, The approach to policy enforcement will rely
- 13:01more heavily on D, amplification as opposed to probably Banning
- 13:06people out, right? Right.
- 13:07So that's number one. Number two, is our safety and
- 13:11Trust team continues to diligent work to keep the platform safe
- 13:14from hateful conduct abusive behavior in any violation of
- 13:17Twitter's rules now their trust in the safety team had been
- 13:21gutted. So about half of that, Workforce
- 13:23is gone, people have left Twitter, people have quit the
- 13:27company, people have been fired. They say, Say that the team
- 13:30remains strong and well resource, but you know, it's
- 13:34that's objective to who you're talking to and automated
- 13:38detection plays an increasingly important role in eliminating
- 13:41abuse. So they're probably using some
- 13:43AI that they, you know, they may have had before.
- 13:46But they more than likely haven't built a new AI system in
- 13:50order to capture, you know, some of these wrongdoers.
- 13:54So to speak on the platform, since Ilan took hold of
- 13:57everything. So here we go.
- 13:58This is bullet. 3, when urgent events manifest on the platform,
- 14:02we ensure that all content moderators have the guidance.
- 14:04They need to find an address violative content, basically
- 14:08train them. You know, I'll cut.
- 14:10They have the guidance and they have the resources available to
- 14:13deescalate things and to kind of steer things into a less
- 14:18violative content creation at that point.
- 14:21So that's basically the same heart.
- 14:23Our team is well, well funded, we have enough people, we have
- 14:27enough resources. Okay, so that's what the last
- 14:29You were all about this next one.
- 14:31As we improve our prophecies and processes.
- 14:33Bad actors will also develop new methods of disruption, this is
- 14:35not new. So as somebody puts out a new
- 14:38tool, you know, as Twitter puts out a new tool or something, add
- 14:41something to the platform Bad actors in any sort of way, we'll
- 14:45find a way to get around that or disrupted in some way.
- 14:49And they say this is, this is a funny one.
- 14:52So, think about this for a second, it says our team of
- 14:55experts and they didn't have to say experts at that point.
- 14:59But they use that language for a specific reason because if
- 15:03you're reading this and it just says our team is constantly
- 15:05adapting to identifying diffuse threats.
- 15:07The term experts builds trust with you.
- 15:10Right. That's a simple word to say.
- 15:12And if you say you're an expert at something, you know, cool.
- 15:14Okay. Well, you're an expert
- 15:15astrophysicists. You probably know a lot about
- 15:18the universe or you're an expert, archaeologists.
- 15:23You probably know a lot about the past, you know, so those
- 15:28terms are used in. A way to kind of reinforce the
- 15:32fact that these aren't just a bunch of people playing games
- 15:35over there, they're adapting to identify and diffuse threats and
- 15:38we are proud of our results. Impressions on violative.
- 15:41Content are down over the past month, despite the growth, in
- 15:44overall usage on the platform and the platform has grown since
- 15:47Elon took charge of it. So if it's down that's it's
- 15:51pretty good sign. So, I think they're doing well
- 15:53there. And the last one is finally, as
- 15:55we embark on this new Journey, we will make mistakes.
- 15:57So they're admitting like this is the Is putting the cart
- 16:00before the horse, they're saying, hey we're going to mess
- 16:03up and this is a good thing to do because if you're admitting
- 16:07fault to begin with, people can kind of just brush it off and
- 16:10go, okay. You know, we knew this was going
- 16:12to happen and we're going to give you a little bit of slack.
- 16:14They say we will learn and we will also get things right?
- 16:17So, they'll learn from their mistakes.
- 16:19And of course, they said mistakes first, before they
- 16:21said, we will learn. So it seems like they got to
- 16:23learn from the mistakes. We will also get things right.
- 16:26Meaning, they're going to move forward with the mistakes.
- 16:28They're going to keep building. In this open way, you keep
- 16:31breaking stuff and fixing stuff and throughout the process
- 16:34they're going to learn from that and then they're going to get
- 16:36it, right? So they're going to make
- 16:37mistakes, they're going to learn from those those mistakes and
- 16:41then get them right in the end throughout will communicate
- 16:43openly with our users and customers to get and share your
- 16:46feedback as we build. So they're leaving it up in the
- 16:49air. They're going to do things
- 16:50wrong. They're going to learn from it.
- 16:51They're going to fix it and then they're going to communicate
- 16:55what happened with the users which is great or maybe they
- 16:58communicate beforehand. Say hey we're going to try this
- 17:00thing out. We just wanted to let you know
- 17:03because if anything seems weird please let us know.
- 17:05And then I say we remain committed to provide a safe,
- 17:08inclusive, entertaining and informative experience for
- 17:11everyone will continue to be transparent as we move through
- 17:13this transition period and we will listen to you.
- 17:16The people who make Twitter what it is, the Town Square of the
- 17:20internet. Okay?
- 17:21So that was the wrap up at the end.
- 17:24That could have been the only paragraph they ever said, you
- 17:27know, they could have just wrote that in a tweet.
- 17:29We were Remain committed to providing a safe inclusive,
- 17:31entertaining and informative experience for everyone will
- 17:33continue to be transparent as we move through this transition
- 17:36period and will listen to you. So, basically saying, hey, we
- 17:39know, we got some stuff going on here.
- 17:41And every time that we do something, we're going to make
- 17:44sure that it's safe inclusive and entertaining.
- 17:47We want you to come here and have fun.
- 17:49We want you to have, you know, conversations with people.
- 17:52We don't want it to be a horrible place, but we're going
- 17:55to make some mistakes along the way and we're going to tell you
- 17:57about it, you know, but we want you.
- 17:59To tell us about what's wrong to in, they say and we will listen
- 18:03to you. The people who make Twitter what
- 18:05it is, they might listen, right? But at the end of the day, will
- 18:08they change things in order to make Twitter?
- 18:11A more inclusive safer, more entertaining, and informative
- 18:15experience for everyone. There are some things that could
- 18:18happen in the near term that can make these things, you know,
- 18:21those terms a little bit better in from a content creator.
- 18:25Six standpoint, making podcasting available on Twitter
- 18:28would be amazed. I think I'm making long form
- 18:30content on Twitter would be amazing, you know, a safer place
- 18:33would be great, you know, as far as I know they have a team in
- 18:37place according to their press release here, they have a team
- 18:39in place to make it a safer experience for everybody
- 18:42involved. So they want to be transparent
- 18:44about a to. So what they're going to do is
- 18:47tell us about what's going on and that's all we can really
- 18:50take from this press release but it's from the Twitter team, not
- 18:53from Elan himself, so Elon will have these little tidbits and
- 18:57that's what he does. With all of his companies will
- 18:59have Something safe from SpaceX and they're working on something
- 19:02at say a Starship, you know, say if they're working on something
- 19:06that Starship Saudi posts a picture of something, from a
- 19:08Starships, a raptor engine. And they say, hey, what is this
- 19:11pipe do on the Raptor engine? You know, one might say, oh,
- 19:13that's a pipe that we changed because of this, this and this
- 19:16and it's happened in the past with Starship.
- 19:19It's happened with the Dragon capsule.
- 19:21It's happened with Falcon 9's. It's happened with everything
- 19:23along the way Elon is posted on Twitter and just said, hey, this
- 19:27is what we're working on, so expect a bunch S'more stuff from
- 19:30Elan in the future because I think there's going to be some
- 19:34interesting things happening at Twitter.
- 19:35And I think what happened was that all the turmoil from
- 19:37Twitter immediately happened because it's a new like somebody
- 19:43else is in charge. Now at half the people are gone.
- 19:45It's like Elon, snapped, his fingers and half of the people
