- 0:33Speaker 1: feel like. And I figure if it's good for Brian Reynolds,
- 0:37Speaker 1: and I think yeah, Jason Momoa has a Yeah, Scott
- 0:40Speaker 1: Brady has a privately labeled alcohol and this is Scott
- 0:43Speaker 1: Brady Tequila. It strangely looks like urine it may or
- 0:48Speaker 1: may not be. And he does have what was once
- 0:53Speaker 1: a Brita picture yes, next to him, filled with what
- 0:57Speaker 1: may or may not be tequila, which has several different
- 1:01Speaker 1: Overland International brands on it, my favorite being the expertly
- 1:06Speaker 1: prepared branding package. Here. See when you pull this off,
- 1:11Speaker 1: it twists like yeah, twists, Oh it twists, yeah, Look
- 1:14Speaker 1: look at twists with Expedition Portal. If you don't read
- 1:17Speaker 1: Expedition Portal, you probably should mostly after drinking tequila. Yeah,

- 2:25Speaker 1: And uh, you do the things that requires your heart
- 2:29Speaker 1: rate to be up, and you exercise in various ways outdoors, Yes,
- 2:34Speaker 1: Scott and I do not.
- 2:36Speaker 2: Human powered and dino juice powered adventures.
- 2:39Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, so so world class kayaker, you mountain bike,
- 2:44Speaker 1: you do the thing where you use gravity down the
- 2:47Speaker 1: ski slopes.
- 2:48Speaker 2: Oh yes, ski all of the things, skiing, snowboard.
- 2:51Speaker 1: All yeah, both both skiing and snowboarding.
- 2:54Speaker 2: Yeah, snowboard instruct you're back in the day and interesting
- 2:56Speaker 2: recently ski photographer.
- 2:58Speaker 1: Oh cool. I've had the pleasure of tr raveling all
- 3:00Speaker 1: over the world with Brian. I've had the pleasure of
- 3:02Speaker 1: Brian coming for Thanksgiving and leaving for New Years. And
- 3:05Speaker 1: uh yeah, yeah, no, I'm just stoked to have you,
- 3:08Speaker 1: stoked to have you here. You were on our original
- 3:11Speaker 1: list of guests, and it's taken this long, It's taken
- 3:14Speaker 1: almost two years. We had that many people that we
- 3:16Speaker 1: wanted ahead of Brian. That's not true, that's not you
- 3:19Speaker 1: were actually very you were very busy, like moving from
- 3:23Speaker 1: a nomadic life to marrying a wonderful woman, Kate, whom
- 3:27Speaker 1: we all love and having a beautiful baby Rose and
- 3:32Speaker 1: having a a roof over your head that does not
- 3:36Speaker 1: pop up, and I.
- 3:38Speaker 2: Hope not.
- 3:41Speaker 1: Those historic homes. Anything is possible. Yeah, yeah, modern homes
- 3:46Speaker 1: like them more twenty eight years old. Yeah. So, how
- 3:50Speaker 1: do you describe Brian door and that's the are myself
- 3:55Speaker 1: b r O yo N. That's an important distinction, yes,
- 3:59Speaker 1: are so like if you try and spell your name
- 4:02Speaker 1: the way you think it's spelled, you're going to mess
- 4:04Speaker 1: it up.
- 4:04Speaker 2: If you try to smell the most wrong, the worst
- 4:07Speaker 2: that you can think of, you're probably about right.
- 4:09Speaker 1: Scott and I do not have that problem. All of
- 4:11Speaker 1: our names name exactly. Yeah, there's there's six first names
- 4:17Speaker 1: on this side. Yeah, yeah, Scott, Alan, Brady, the whole
- 4:22Speaker 1: first name. Yeah, that makes us. I think that makes
- 4:26Speaker 1: us very suspect. Matt incredibly, that's the only thing that
- 4:29Speaker 1: makes you. No, no, no, that's that's one of a
- 4:32Speaker 1: long list. I guess Overland life kind of started for
- 4:36Speaker 1: you with your sportsmobile.
- 4:39Speaker 2: It did.
- 4:39Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, you were in Portland, you were running what
- 4:43Speaker 1: was the name of the shop that you were running?
- 4:44Speaker 1: You or an outdoor industry buyer.
- 4:46Speaker 2: Yes, at the time, I ran a large paddlesports retailer
- 4:50Speaker 2: part of a big outdoor store. It was called Next
- 4:52Speaker 2: Adventure still around, I think right, still around, still getting
- 4:55Speaker 2: bigger and bigger. Yeah, they're killing it. So I moved
- 4:57Speaker 2: about a two thousand square foot paddle sport department in
- 4:59Speaker 2: the big out doorstores I think local ARII style thing.
- 5:03Speaker 2: Took that little two thousand square foot to employee thing
- 5:05Speaker 2: to a fifteen thousand square foot paddle sports center with
- 5:09Speaker 2: sixteen employees and two vans and a rental program and
- 5:13Speaker 2: three thousand plus students through a school a year. In
- 5:15Speaker 2: about an under three year program, I took that thing
- 5:18Speaker 2: from making okay money to making well over a million
- 5:20Speaker 2: dollars a year.
- 5:21Speaker 1: So it's good. That's pretty awesome. Yeah, I think that's
- 5:23Speaker 1: one of the things for me is that is really
- 5:26Speaker 1: interesting about you, Brian, is that you've gained a level
- 5:29Speaker 1: of mastery and a bunch of totally disparate activities. So
- 5:33Speaker 1: you've leveled. You've gained a significant level of mastery in
- 5:36Speaker 1: water sports, you've gained a notable level of mastery as
- 5:39Speaker 1: an automotive journalist. Then you've also started and run and
- 5:43Speaker 1: grown businesses to a pretty significant degree of success. What
- 5:47Speaker 1: would you say is the common thing amongst all of
- 5:49Speaker 1: them about you that's allowed you to do.
- 5:51Speaker 2: That, probably really enjoying and excelling when things are continuously
- 5:57Speaker 2: moving and you have to react to it and have
- 6:00Speaker 2: already planned ahead, had four or five plans enacted, and
- 6:03Speaker 2: then deal with what's coming at you when it happens.
- 6:06Speaker 2: It's in Whitewater, when you're in the middle of a
- 6:07Speaker 2: rapid you're not turning around and going back. You're going
- 6:10Speaker 2: downstream one way or the other at that point, and
- 6:12Speaker 2: you've got to deal with what comes at you, whether
- 6:14Speaker 2: you expected it or not. And I think it's the
- 6:16Speaker 2: same with business.
- 6:17Speaker 1: So you find yourself to be effective as a tactician
- 6:21Speaker 1: or a planner, but then it seems like that you
- 6:24Speaker 1: are certainly effective in the moment, like when something goes
- 6:27Speaker 1: suddenly sideways or upside down. For sure, as businesses, as
- 6:31Speaker 1: businesses and White Wi, I think Brian always has a plan.
- 6:34Speaker 1: I mean, Brian's helped me so much with my business
- 6:36Speaker 1: and starting to venture imports and a variety of things
- 6:39Speaker 1: because you plan.
- 6:41Speaker 2: I'm decent at planning. I'm really good at situational awareness
- 6:45Speaker 2: and having the knowledge and skill set from my history
- 6:48Speaker 2: to deal with stuff that's happening at the time and
- 6:52Speaker 2: in a super appropriate manner. That kind of is a
- 6:54Speaker 2: plan for the future. So it might look like I
- 6:56Speaker 2: have a plan, but it's just because I kind of
- 6:58Speaker 2: made something happen on the fly back in the day
- 7:00Speaker 2: that then created that situation.
- 7:02Speaker 1: So a big toolbox for you based on all of
- 7:04Speaker 1: those experiences.
- 7:05Speaker 2: Yeah, I think so, I think. Yeah. I think my
- 7:07Speaker 2: experiences in business and running multiple businesses, running busess for
- 7:11Speaker 2: other people, myself, all the above, paddle sports, action sports,
- 7:14Speaker 2: that's all led to wanting to travel more and doing
- 7:17Speaker 2: well and just figuring it out while on the road.
- 7:19Speaker 2: I started out trying to be a professional photographer. I
- 7:21Speaker 2: was twenty eleven. I'm like, no debt, but no money.
- 7:24Speaker 2: I mean I had one hundred bucks in the bank,
- 7:26Speaker 2: but I owned my sports on my used sports meal
- 7:28Speaker 2: that I bought, sold off my car, sold off everything
- 7:29Speaker 2: I had. I think I had like twelve hundred bucks
- 7:32Speaker 2: I think in my bank account and my sports bill,
- 7:34Speaker 2: but I had no bills. I mean I had a
- 7:35Speaker 2: cell phone bill, car insurance, that's it. No other bills,
- 7:38Speaker 2: No no Netflix, no Hulu, none of that stuff. To
- 7:41Speaker 2: add to the to the monthly bills, and I just
- 7:44Speaker 2: hit the road and I was like, I'll figure it out.
- 7:46Speaker 2: I can. I can always go get a job if
- 7:48Speaker 2: I have to and slow down. But the plan was
- 7:50Speaker 2: to go see lots of stuff and kind of follow
- 7:52Speaker 2: the season, ski, snowboard, kayak, do all the above, and
- 7:54Speaker 2: try to be a professional outdoor industry photographer, especially action sports.
- 7:59Speaker 2: I love ski, snowboard, kayaker out of my passions.
- 8:01Speaker 1: What did you do before that, before that moment in time?
- 8:04Speaker 1: What we find when we interview people, there's something either
- 8:07Speaker 1: they hate their job or there's been a significant personal shift.
- 8:12Speaker 1: What was the thing that brought you to that point
- 8:14Speaker 1: to saying I'm going to leave with my van in
- 8:16Speaker 1: twelve hundred dollars and go see the world or at
- 8:18Speaker 1: least try.
- 8:19Speaker 2: Yeah, the twelve months before that, it was kind of
- 8:22Speaker 2: a TRIFECTA lost long term girlfriend, kind of we split
- 8:26Speaker 2: win our different ways on a different coast at the time.
- 8:28Speaker 2: And the second thing that happened was I was not
- 8:31Speaker 2: getting kind of respect and monetary value for the job
- 8:35Speaker 2: I was doing, even though I was making it huge.
- 8:38Speaker 2: So I was making the same money managing two employees
- 8:41Speaker 2: at thirty two hours a week as I was eighty
- 8:42Speaker 2: hours a week managing sixteen employees. And sure, at some
- 8:45Speaker 2: point you just sit back and go, this isn't going
- 8:47Speaker 2: to work out long term. I'm wasting my time. Yeah,
- 8:49Speaker 2: have time with that exactly. So yeah, I said, have
- 8:51Speaker 2: fun with that essentially. And the other thing that happened,
- 8:54Speaker 2: kind of the big thing that I always talk about
- 8:56Speaker 2: is I had three pretty close friends pass away in
- 8:59Speaker 2: short order. So understand six months, three friends, all younger
- 9:01Speaker 2: than me, some substantially, some less, all three kind of
- 9:05Speaker 2: doing what they love whitewater kayaking, freak accident there, and
- 9:09Speaker 2: then one a South African friend, was actually rabies. So
- 9:12Speaker 2: he took in a stray dog. It was licking him
- 9:14Speaker 2: and he's a rancher, so his hands were all cut
- 9:16Speaker 2: up and he contracted rabies through the cuts in his hands.
- 9:18Speaker 2: Like they didn't know the dog at rabies at all
- 9:20Speaker 2: until he contracted it. So but he, yeah, vegetable pretty
- 9:23Speaker 2: quick and that was rough. And he was twenty two,
- 9:26Speaker 2: I think, So Yeah, that kind of was a big
- 9:29Speaker 2: impact in eye opener. It was like not a dead
- 9:31Speaker 2: end job, but like I knew I wasn't going anywhere,
- 9:33Speaker 2: I wasn't getting kind of what I needed out of it.
- 9:34Speaker 2: Saw people that were living life to the fullest that
- 9:36Speaker 2: were gone, and I was like, it's time to do
- 9:38Speaker 2: something different with my life. Time is the most valuable
- 9:41Speaker 2: resource we all have, the one thing we can't get back.
- 9:43Speaker 2: We can always earn more money or do this or
- 9:45Speaker 2: do that, but time is you never know. So it
- 9:48Speaker 2: was time to hit the road and do something different.
- 9:49Speaker 2: And that was I didn't know what I would do,
- 9:51Speaker 2: but it was in a situation where I didn't have
- 9:53Speaker 2: kind of I don't want to say baggage with the
- 9:55Speaker 2: baggage of pets or property or significant others or anything
- 9:59Speaker 2: else and debt, so I didn't have that. I paid
- 10:02Speaker 2: it all off with a bunch of work and was
- 10:04Speaker 2: just ready to do something different. Fresh start.
- 10:07Speaker 1: Yeah, cool, amazing. And I guess prior to that, you know,
- 10:10Speaker 1: you brought up kind of friends in South African stuff.
- 10:12Speaker 1: You paddled like the Zambezy. I remember you tell me
- 10:15Speaker 1: this one story where you hit the side of your
- 10:17Speaker 1: kayaks so the hippos don't come after you.
- 10:19Speaker 2: One hundred percent when you paddle the flat water on
- 10:22Speaker 2: the lower Zambezi, which isn't run that often. The inner Gorge.
- 10:25Speaker 2: The upper section just below Victoria Falls is pretty commonly
- 10:28Speaker 2: run and that's the harder rapids and that's why people
- 10:30Speaker 2: run in It's really hard and really fun as from
- 10:32Speaker 2: an experienced kayaker point of view. But further down it's
- 10:34Speaker 2: flattered between the rapids longer, and that's where all the
- 10:37Speaker 2: hippos are and the freshwater crocks. So yeah, you paddle
- 10:41Speaker 2: in those pools together in a group with the kayaks
- 10:44Speaker 2: really close together, and every other stroke you tap the
- 10:46Speaker 2: boat with the paddle and it makes enough noise all
- 10:49Speaker 2: together that it makes you seem really big. And then
- 10:50Speaker 2: they don't mess with you, you hope. So I know a
- 10:53Speaker 2: friend that got eaten by a freshwater crocks, so's it's
- 10:56Speaker 2: a thing.
- 10:57Speaker 1: Yeah, they don't. They don't have, you know, a high
- 11:00Speaker 1: discernment of prey, so like anything that looks like protein
- 11:04Speaker 1: is prey.
- 11:05Speaker 2: Yep. Yeah, for sure. The Zambiz is amazing, Like if
- 11:08Speaker 2: you ever get a chance, if you're not a kyaker,
- 11:10Speaker 2: it doesn't matter, go raft it though, even if you're
- 11:11Speaker 2: not a kayaker, like epic, epic place to be as
- 11:15Speaker 2: a kayaker. The rafts don't go here, but up the
- 11:18Speaker 2: rapids are numbered one through I forget what it is
- 11:21Speaker 2: twenty something, and there's negative rapids, and the negative rapids
- 11:24Speaker 2: are below Victoria Falls, like directly below where it flows,
- 11:27Speaker 2: and the falls fall off the rocks, and you have
- 11:29Speaker 2: to actually paddle upstream and kind of do a portage
- 11:31Speaker 2: and then ferry across the current to get up there.
- 11:33Speaker 2: So rafts don't really go there. But I stood in
- 11:35Speaker 2: that area, saw some friends around the minus rapids. I didn't.
- 11:38Speaker 2: It's really really hard, like class five plus plus plus
- 11:41Speaker 2: plus plus. It was amazing, I guess some amazing images
- 11:44Speaker 2: as a photographer, but I got to stand under one
- 11:47Speaker 2: of the smaller waterfalls falling off Victoria Falls, like directly
- 11:50Speaker 2: under it, and that was just like a super moving
- 11:52Speaker 2: experience for me, Like that's a place that so very
- 11:54Speaker 2: few people have been. It's one of the many things
- 11:57Speaker 2: in my life that really connected me to white Water
- 11:59Speaker 2: as a thing to go explore places on the planet
- 12:02Speaker 2: that other people just haven't been, or very very few
- 12:04Speaker 2: people have been. Being on the river and traveling by
- 12:07Speaker 2: water is a unique perspective on the world and it's
- 12:11Speaker 2: just really cool, especially really remote creeks. Kind Of early on,
- 12:15Speaker 2: I studied abroad in Tasmania and Australia, and there's this
- 12:19Speaker 2: really remote creek that had been run once before and
- 12:22Speaker 2: it poured rain for like five days and it went
- 12:24Speaker 2: it started flowing, and I had all my friends there,
- 12:27Speaker 2: like dragging out of bed in the morning super early.
- 12:29Speaker 2: We went out there and did it. It was way above
- 12:30Speaker 2: my head still level wise at the time, and probably
- 12:32Speaker 2: shouldn't been there. It was pouring rain all day, but
- 12:35Speaker 2: I ran in like inappropriate gear of rapids above my head,
- 12:39Speaker 2: like in the middle of nowhere. They're not going to
- 12:41Speaker 2: get help. There's no cell service. We didn't have garment
- 12:43Speaker 2: in reaches back then, and just the teamwork and being
- 12:47Speaker 2: in those places was just the most special thing and
- 12:49Speaker 2: that's what really hooked me. And I'm like, Okay, I'm
- 12:51Speaker 2: going to travel the world to do this because it's
- 12:53Speaker 2: going to take me places that others don't go.
- 12:55Speaker 1: And I like that. I mean, it's always been interesting,
- 12:57Speaker 1: like as a friend, you know, we've been friends for
- 13:00Speaker 1: a while now, and just there's always like a there's
- 13:02Speaker 1: always a new layer of Brian Dor. You're like a
- 13:05Speaker 1: very complicated, slightly salty onion. Salty for sure, salty. Anybody
- 13:11Speaker 1: that knows Brian will be laughing right now. Okay, so
- 13:15Speaker 1: you've done the Zambz. I know, I know prior to that,
- 13:18Speaker 1: you know, you are involved with importing kayaks and kayak equipment.
- 13:21Speaker 1: That was a big part of your life prior to that.
- 13:24Speaker 1: So let's let's let's fast forward to what we initially
- 13:26Speaker 1: talked about. Was was the Sportsobile, you love vans for
- 13:30Speaker 1: some reason.
- 13:31Speaker 2: I do.
- 13:31Speaker 1: I mean you're like, you're like pre pre all of
- 13:34Speaker 1: this van life thing. Oh, totally pre van life, pre
- 13:37Speaker 1: van life. Yeah, you get this. It was it was
- 13:40Speaker 1: four wheel drive, right, yes, yeah, so with four wheel drive, it.
- 13:43Speaker 2: Was a four quickly four wheel drive on thirty three's
- 13:46Speaker 2: extended body E three fifty with seven three Diesel. It's
- 13:50Speaker 2: a full sports Mael build.
- 13:51Speaker 1: So it had a have a pop top or a
- 13:52Speaker 1: solid top.
- 13:53Speaker 2: Pop top nice for me. Pop tops required because I
- 13:56Speaker 2: roofs are for adventure gear. Sure, so a full height
- 14:01Speaker 2: one you just get too high. I want to be
- 14:03Speaker 2: able to fit down trail.
- 14:04Speaker 1: It makes sense.
- 14:05Speaker 2: I'm always on the pop top.
- 14:06Speaker 1: I remember being you know when I because we kind
- 14:08Speaker 1: of got into the overlan world right about the same Similarly,
- 14:12Speaker 1: I found each other pretty quick became friends, been friends since,
- 14:15Speaker 1: been to each other's weddings. Actually, both of you guys
- 14:18Speaker 1: were the only non family I had on my side
- 14:21Speaker 1: at the wedding.
- 14:21Speaker 2: Amazing wedding. If you guys haven't talked about that yet, yeah,
- 14:25Speaker 2: we did talk about it a little bit. I mean
- 14:26Speaker 2: it was the most beautiful wedding. It was a scene for.
- 14:32Speaker 1: Thirteen people. You needed a four whel drive to get there.
- 14:35Speaker 1: You needed four wheel drive to get there. Yeah, it
- 14:37Speaker 1: was always eleven five hundred fears incredible.
- 14:42Speaker 2: Two month old baby did really well at eleven dozen.
- 14:44Speaker 1: Yea was the star of the show.
- 14:46Speaker 2: I don't know. Dak was. Dak was loved by everybody.
- 14:49Speaker 1: We did meet My dog and I had matching suits.
- 14:53Speaker 1: You did. That was that was class. That was That
- 14:55Speaker 1: was pretty cool. That was we just we just valued
- 14:58Speaker 1: what we valued value group of friends. And then we
- 15:00Speaker 1: spent the money on our ridiculous honeymoon and traveling because
- 15:03Speaker 1: after all this COVID stuff.
- 15:04Speaker 2: Yeah, so Sportsman was before times, back in twenty eleven,
- 15:07Speaker 2: and that was like, honestly that came about it wasn't
- 15:09Speaker 2: I didn't know anything about Overland World or the You're
- 15:13Speaker 2: overland Yeah, like overland no anymore, I don't.
- 15:16Speaker 1: I'm overlanding has been like this has been a tool
- 15:20Speaker 1: and a general industry that has allowed you to do
- 15:24Speaker 1: other activities.
- 15:25Speaker 2: I love automotive stuff as a kid. I'm a sports
- 15:28Speaker 2: car guy for ari guy the whole nine yards. But
- 15:31Speaker 2: I was never like way into four by fours or
- 15:34Speaker 2: I camped. I own boy scouts and camped in tents and stuff.
- 15:36Speaker 2: But yeah, I don't know that I'm an overlander. I
- 15:39Speaker 2: want to live in a van down by the river,
- 15:41Speaker 2: like straight up. That was me. That was like, put
- 15:43Speaker 2: the kayaks on there and chase the rain and go
- 15:45Speaker 2: find rivers all over the planet. We're skiing, I mean water,
- 15:48Speaker 2: the cycle of water, right, whether it's frozen or not.
- 15:50Speaker 2: I enjoy using gravity and going down it.
- 15:52Speaker 1: Mmmm. You're kind of like the actual definition of overlanding.
- 15:56Speaker 1: I mean a lot of people call themselves that, but
- 15:58Speaker 1: you're actually doing vehicle based adventure travel. That's like literally
- 16:02Speaker 1: what you did.
- 16:03Speaker 2: So it totally depends on the definition, right, Because for
- 16:06Speaker 2: my first a lot of years, I lived about eight
- 16:08Speaker 2: years full time in the road between twenty eleven and
- 16:11Speaker 2: twenty eighteen something, so seven something years I lived in
- 16:13Speaker 2: a couple different vehicles, but started with the sports bhill
- 16:15Speaker 2: for a few years, and it was chasing water and
- 16:17Speaker 2: doing all that. But the automotive stuff was a tool
- 16:20Speaker 2: to go do the adventure. That was just a way
- 16:23Speaker 2: to live cheap so I could do the adventures. I
- 16:25Speaker 2: lived under the poverty line for five six years and
- 16:28Speaker 2: sort of by choice, Like I could have gone out
- 16:30Speaker 2: and made more money. I had made more money before
- 16:32Speaker 2: I started on the road. It was enough to keep
- 16:34Speaker 2: doing what I wanted to do and hone my skills
- 16:36Speaker 2: in photography, learn a lot about off road, off road
- 16:40Speaker 2: travels or recovery and all that kind of thing, how
- 16:42Speaker 2: to drive off road and how to live in a
- 16:44Speaker 2: camper and all that kind of thing. And then you know,
- 16:46Speaker 2: the next step was the sportsmobile was old and little rusty.
- 16:50Speaker 2: To build another vehicle and that was like the big
- 16:53Speaker 2: the big next move, so an one dodge ram.
- 16:57Speaker 1: How would you before we moved to that next section.
- 17:00Speaker 1: This is really interesting to me when you talk about
- 17:02Speaker 1: living below the poverty line. I think we get a
- 17:05Speaker 1: lot of matt and I get a lot of questions
- 17:07Speaker 1: about how do I afford to do this? Or I
- 17:08Speaker 1: can't I can't do this? Because I can't afford it.
- 17:10Speaker 1: That's really interesting to me. Would you mind talking a
- 17:13Speaker 1: little bit about how you did that, how you made
- 17:15Speaker 1: decisions financially where you could go and travel and live
- 17:19Speaker 1: on a van down by the river, below the poverty line.
- 17:23Speaker 2: I think the key to that, and that's always the
- 17:24Speaker 2: question is like how do you do it? They don't
- 17:26Speaker 2: mean how you do it, they mean how do you
- 17:28Speaker 2: afford it? And the reality of that is, if it's
- 17:31Speaker 2: a priority, you afford it. It's not that complicated. Everybody
- 17:35Speaker 2: makes it a thing, and it's usually because they have
- 17:38Speaker 2: hang ups with societal norms and laws. So like I
- 17:41Speaker 2: want to own property, Oh, I got this house, Like
- 17:43Speaker 2: I can't leave, I can't go do anything. I gotta
- 17:44Speaker 2: pay my mortgage. Well, you can rent it out, there's ways, right,
- 17:47Speaker 2: or you can sell it. You don't need to own that.
- 17:49Speaker 2: You don't neither the white picket fence, or I got kids,
- 17:51Speaker 2: I can't travel. We all know plenty of Yeah.
- 17:54Speaker 1: We were literally just having a margarite with Graham and
- 17:56Speaker 1: Louisa Belle. Absolutely raise their children, raise their children like
- 18:00Speaker 1: the rest of the world. Amazing kids, absolutely totally amazing,
- 18:03Speaker 1: super well adjusted, funny. Yeah, again, all of those are
- 18:06Speaker 1: just excuses because the priority isn't to go travel and
- 18:10Speaker 1: do that. They might aspire to it, but that's not
- 18:12Speaker 1: the priority in life. The priority is like, well, we
- 18:14Speaker 1: want a stable school life, and we want this and
- 18:16Speaker 1: we want that, and that's fine. That's That's the thing
- 18:18Speaker 1: that I think a lot of people got to get
- 18:20Speaker 1: over is like find the path that works for you
- 18:21Speaker 1: in life at that time. I mean, my life's changed
- 18:24Speaker 1: dramatically recently and I'm fine with it.
- 18:26Speaker 2: It's a new path. Priories change, it'll change again.
- 18:30Speaker 1: You have a rad garage now too.
- 18:31Speaker 2: I have if I'm living, if I have a reformat
- 18:33Speaker 2: I'm going to have a toy box garage. That's required.
- 18:37Speaker 1: It's like in like, I feel like in a year
- 18:39Speaker 1: Brian went from like living in a van down by
- 18:42Speaker 1: the river to having a nice house all the things
- 18:44Speaker 1: and all having Alexis and this awesome garage and a
- 18:48Speaker 1: nine to eleven Turbo, And I think it just kind
- 18:50Speaker 1: of goes to to show the capability of you as
- 18:52Speaker 1: a person, you know. I Mean, one of the things
- 18:54Speaker 1: I've always thought about you, Brian is that you talk
- 18:57Speaker 1: about what you're just saying with priorities and what you
- 18:59Speaker 1: value and things, and you know, you're a highly intelligent
- 19:02Speaker 1: person that has been able to figure out how to
- 19:04Speaker 1: do whatever they want whenever they want. And that's sort
- 19:07Speaker 1: of that's well, and that's the definition of wealth. And
- 19:10Speaker 1: a lot of times, yeah, exactly, people confuse being rich
- 19:13Speaker 1: with being wealthy. Being rich means that you have a lot,
- 19:15Speaker 1: you spend a lot of money, So that means you're
- 19:18Speaker 1: Some people make a million dollars a year and they
- 19:19Speaker 1: spend one point two million. They're very rich. But the
- 19:22Speaker 1: person who is wealthy is doing what they want to
- 19:25Speaker 1: do when they want to do it. Sometimes doing what
- 19:27Speaker 1: you want to do requires more money than someone else
- 19:30Speaker 1: because what they want to do is different. But that's
- 19:32Speaker 1: really the only true definition of wealth is being able
- 19:34Speaker 1: to do what you want when you want. And you
- 19:36Speaker 1: did that, so you were very, very wealthy, much more
- 19:39Speaker 1: so than most Americans for sure.
- 19:41Speaker 2: Yeah, and it wasn't money. It was not rich part
- 19:44Speaker 2: of wealthy for sure, but yeah, and then actual dollars
- 19:48Speaker 2: and cents in how to make it work right is
- 19:50Speaker 2: to piece the puzzle together to be you have your
- 19:52Speaker 2: fingers in a million different things, or be really good
- 19:56Speaker 2: at one thing that pays well and do that on
- 19:58Speaker 2: the road. But that is hard. It's not for everybody
- 20:00Speaker 2: to do. I went the route of putting my fingers
- 20:04Speaker 2: and everything because I wanted to be a photographer. That
- 20:06Speaker 2: was my goal. In today's world, everybody wants everything. So
- 20:09Speaker 2: you get to be a good photographer, get paid for it,
- 20:12Speaker 2: and get INDs with editors and everything else. You have
- 20:14Speaker 2: to also be a good writer, maybe be a personality,
- 20:18Speaker 2: maybe have a social media presence, maybe have video and
- 20:22Speaker 2: YouTube stuff going on. There's a lot of facets to
- 20:25Speaker 2: marketing yourself these days, especially in the media world, and
- 20:29Speaker 2: the media landscape continually changes as we all know, so yeah,
- 20:32Speaker 2: it's just piecing it together. So I did commercial photography,
- 20:35Speaker 2: I did editorial photography, I did editorive photography and writing.
- 20:38Speaker 2: Eventually got into editing other people's stories, doing copyright or
- 20:42Speaker 2: copy editing and doing that stuff for brands as well
- 20:46Speaker 2: as you doing a bit of like marketing consulting, was
- 20:48Speaker 2: social media management marketing consulting. So I have a entrepreneurial
- 20:52Speaker 2: a bit was it a Bachelor of Science in Business
- 20:55Speaker 2: Administration with the concentration of entrepreneurial marketing, Like that's the
- 20:58Speaker 2: degree I bs. I have lots of bs, a whole
- 21:02Speaker 2: lot of that. So yeah, so I mean that whole table,
- 21:06Speaker 2: the whole table. I hired myself out of college and
- 21:08Speaker 2: started my own company, and so I used my degree.
- 21:11Speaker 2: I think just finding your own path and figuring it
- 21:14Speaker 2: out is the puzzle. So events management, work, run some
- 21:17Speaker 2: people's social media, take some photos over here for a company,
- 21:19Speaker 2: and he takes write some stories and take some cool
- 21:21Speaker 2: photos on your adventures and sell those just some magazines.
- 21:24Speaker 2: Print always pays a little more than online, So just
- 21:26Speaker 2: kind of piece it all.
- 21:27Speaker 1: The cool The cool thing you've always done is you've
- 21:29Speaker 1: always been like really diversified in your work. And I
- 21:32Speaker 1: think that's been the key to you having been able
- 21:35Speaker 1: to do this for so long. Right, Like obviously there's
- 21:38Speaker 1: been changes you know that that that you wanted and
- 21:42Speaker 1: in recent times, but I think you know the lesson.
- 21:45Speaker 1: You know, as we were talking about, well how do
- 21:47Speaker 1: you do it? So many people will will put all
- 21:49Speaker 1: of their eggs in one basket. They you know, they
- 21:52Speaker 1: have a job with Google or some tech company or
- 21:55Speaker 1: something and they get to work remotely and that is
- 21:58Speaker 1: it for them. That is there, that is their one
- 22:01Speaker 1: income source. And as soon as that job changes, or
- 22:04Speaker 1: they don't like that job or something. You know, their
- 22:07Speaker 1: priority still maybe was their career or something else. And
- 22:10Speaker 1: I think what you said was smart is like what
- 22:12Speaker 1: is your actual figure out your actual priority, and then
- 22:15Speaker 1: the kind of make it work from there. And I
- 22:17Speaker 1: think by diversifying, you know, you did that.
- 22:20Speaker 2: By diversifying, it gives you the freedom and flexibility to
- 22:23Speaker 2: make it work as your priorities change. I think it's
- 22:26Speaker 2: a really that's a really good segue into just a
- 22:27Speaker 2: little piece of kind of the recent history. Is April
- 22:30Speaker 2: twenty twenty, like the world was ending, right, everything is
- 22:33Speaker 2: shut down, maybe not down here in Arizona, but everywhere
- 22:35Speaker 2: else in the world, well, certainly Partland where you are. Yeah,
- 22:38Speaker 2: in Portland, Oregon, where I think.
- 22:40Speaker 1: It felt like the end of days in Portland then
- 22:42Speaker 1: it did.
- 22:43Speaker 2: Yeah, it was before a lot of the protests and
- 22:45Speaker 2: riots and stuff. But yeah, April twenty twenty, I lost
- 22:48Speaker 2: about eighty percent of my income within a week and
- 22:50Speaker 2: a half. So every outdoor industry company and some companies
- 22:54Speaker 2: in this space that I was running social media for
- 22:55Speaker 2: and doing corporate photography or commercial photography for, they laid
- 22:59Speaker 2: off all their freelancers and like thirty forty percent of
- 23:01Speaker 2: their staff right. Everybody was getting laid off at the time,
- 23:03Speaker 2: so Freelanch is the first to go because they're not
- 23:05Speaker 2: on salary and in house. And then all events were canceled.
- 23:08Speaker 2: So I helped run the Northwest Overland Rally, help with
- 23:10Speaker 2: the BC Rally, teach sometimes at over the Expo and
- 23:13Speaker 2: stuff like that, so run some music festivals. For operations management,
- 23:17Speaker 2: all that stuff gone disappeared instantly, right So right around
- 23:20Speaker 2: Apri everybody canceled everything for at least the next six months.
- 23:23Speaker 2: So I'm looking at it like wow, all right, but
- 23:26Speaker 2: luckily the company that again it's being diverse and knowing people.
- 23:30Speaker 2: It's all about connections, right, like you get in the
- 23:32Speaker 2: you get your door in your foot in the door
- 23:33Speaker 2: places and prove that you can create and deliver whatever
- 23:37Speaker 2: this they're looking for. So I was working for gear
- 23:39Speaker 2: junkie dot Com at the time, big outdoor industry site,
- 23:42Speaker 2: and I've always positioned myself as the guide between automotive
- 23:46Speaker 2: and outdoor adventure, and that's what I do. I love
- 23:49Speaker 2: being outside and doing active adventure sports and human powered stuff,
- 23:53Speaker 2: but using vehicles to do really fun trips to get there.
- 23:55Speaker 2: Is awesome, and you kind of need vehicles to carry
- 23:58Speaker 2: kayaks around because they're not very good on a motorcycle.
- 24:01Speaker 2: I've tried, I have done it. So yeah, it worked
- 24:04Speaker 2: out where like a week later, I got a full,
- 24:06Speaker 2: my first in my life like salary job with benefits
- 24:09Speaker 2: running a site called autowise dot com and being the
- 24:12Speaker 2: motors editor over at gear Junkie. So it was a
- 24:16Speaker 2: huge change for me. But I worked it out in
- 24:18Speaker 2: my contract because I brought so much to the table
- 24:20Speaker 2: with my industry experience and connections that I can still
- 24:23Speaker 2: freelance forever. So I still have fingers and everything. I
- 24:25Speaker 2: still help with events when they happen, hopefully more so
- 24:28Speaker 2: here coming up soon. Do lots of social media stuff
- 24:31Speaker 2: a little bit. I'm getting out of that a little
- 24:33Speaker 2: bit again. I'm trying to refocus on my photography because
- 24:35Speaker 2: that's what my passion is, so my free time stuff.
- 24:38Speaker 2: I was just out shooting truck this morning for a
- 24:40Speaker 2: print magazine.
- 24:41Speaker 1: Oh, you're shooting Mario's new Terra. Yeah, the new Terra
- 24:44Speaker 1: at Overland. Yeah, very cool camper.
- 24:47Speaker 2: Very slick.
- 24:48Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 24:48Speaker 2: He just showed that off at Overland Expo, and yeah,
- 24:51Speaker 2: we took it out in the mountains and got some
- 24:53Speaker 2: really cool shots this morning, some neat clouds with the weather,
- 24:56Speaker 2: and that'll go in print. I'm the feature editor at
- 24:58Speaker 2: Tread magazine, so that's kind of my print job, but
- 25:00Speaker 2: still keep my finger in that and then it'll go
- 25:03Speaker 2: on gear Junkie as well. We got an exclusive back
- 25:05Speaker 2: in the day from Mario with some of the cad
- 25:07Speaker 2: drawings and stuff, so it kind of debuted that online,
- 25:09Speaker 2: which was super cool to show that off to the
- 25:11Speaker 2: outdoor audience. And that camper is really fun for four
- 25:15Speaker 2: season everything like that should be pretty sweet as a
- 25:17Speaker 2: ski lodge for sure.
- 25:18Speaker 1: And it's fairly priced too. I mean to.
- 25:21Speaker 2: Get an expensive but fairly price in this industry.
- 25:23Speaker 1: And really will make compare it you pay for a
- 25:25Speaker 1: lot of it is never cheap dred percent. I mean,
- 25:28Speaker 1: like my at camper, I have like the summit, and
- 25:30Speaker 1: that thing has just been a a bomber. Another bomber.
- 25:34Speaker 1: I mean, I've had mine airborne a lot for sure.
- 25:39Speaker 2: Those pop top style truck campers are pretty amazing. There's
- 25:42Speaker 2: a huge variety, huge variety of companies out there. An
- 25:44Speaker 2: article I wrote for a gear Junkie I think in
- 25:46Speaker 2: twenty eighteen, I did a roundup of all of those
- 25:49Speaker 2: and it's it's one of the top performing stories still
- 25:53Speaker 2: to this day on gear junkie dot com. I know
- 25:55Speaker 2: xbision portal has a very similar one where you guys
- 25:57Speaker 2: got to test everyone and I've had my hands on
- 25:59Speaker 2: everyone that I wrote about in that article, and those
- 26:01Speaker 2: are the top two on a Google search for that product.
- 26:04Speaker 1: I am not the top Google search for that product.
- 26:07Speaker 2: You are not.
- 26:08Speaker 1: I'm disappointed.
- 26:09Speaker 2: We'll have to try to sneak again.
- 26:11Speaker 1: It's priorities. Many have other priorities like dak Yea Laura
- 26:15Speaker 1: Lovely Greyhound rescue Greyhounds. You love your baby, deck baby
- 26:18Speaker 1: boy dek Snood season has started in the greyhound world.
- 26:22Speaker 1: What is this? They're like a sock that goes over
- 26:25Speaker 1: their neck keeps them warm and you can put it
- 26:28Speaker 1: over their little cute ears.
- 26:30Speaker 2: I saw you putting that on the dog this morning.
- 26:32Speaker 1: Yeah, snood seasons fall has begun. The things you learn
- 26:37Speaker 1: hey on the Order land Dural podcast. Yeah, gund about
- 26:41Speaker 1: snoods right now, man, I.
- 26:43Speaker 2: Mean you got to keep you grey hand warm when
- 26:44Speaker 2: you're overlanding. That's right.
- 26:45Speaker 1: Ex everybody's going, you know when when we were over
- 26:48Speaker 1: in the Overland Expo. Oh, whose car is this? My dogs?
- 26:51Speaker 1: What that one? My dogs? They're all outfitted for my dog.
- 26:54Speaker 1: I mean the LJ it's basically a moving dog bed.
- 26:57Speaker 2: I mean, we talk on a regular basis about all
- 26:59Speaker 2: of your new vehicles and which ones you're getting next,
- 27:01Speaker 2: and it's always, well, no load, no lay flat seats,
- 27:04Speaker 2: we can't have that one dock.
- 27:05Speaker 1: Yeah, like ther g wagon just makes me so angry
- 27:07Speaker 1: that it does not have a flat loading floor, because
- 27:11Speaker 1: because Da does in the very back, doesn't it. Yeah,
- 27:13Speaker 1: but he will not tolerate that.
- 27:15Speaker 2: I don't know how it used to it.
- 27:17Speaker 1: Like if Aaron got a new car and you had
- 27:19Speaker 1: to exclusively sit in a third row seat. I think
- 27:23Speaker 1: it's true, this is true. You would be hurt. Yeah,
- 27:26Speaker 1: this is my little boy hurt.
- 27:27Speaker 2: Well, the new Bentley will work for you, just you know,
- 27:30Speaker 2: just so you know, the Bentley Continental has a nice
- 27:32Speaker 2: loaf lay flat, like you put a buld dog bed
- 27:34Speaker 2: in there.
- 27:34Speaker 1: I can tell you from experience that a greyhound does
- 27:36Speaker 1: not fit in a Bentley Continental GT.
- 27:38Speaker 2: The new one. It might the Benega for sure, Okay,
- 27:42Speaker 2: all right, ben Tega is an interesting choice that'll be
- 27:44Speaker 2: fun for some offroad adventures I'm in.
- 27:45Speaker 1: I'll just really they're just really ugly. Oh, Like the front,
- 27:51Speaker 1: like directly from the front is okay, but any other
- 27:54Speaker 1: angle is not okay. It's just kind of like.
- 27:56Speaker 2: The rear haunches are a little enough.
- 27:58Speaker 1: Yeah, it's kind of like the middle aged woman of cars.
- 28:01Speaker 2: I like the front fenders, though nothing's.
- 28:03Speaker 1: Anything wrong with the middle aged woman's What did you
- 28:07Speaker 1: mean by that, man? I don't really know. Actually, now
- 28:09Speaker 1: that I think of it, I'm gonna.
- 28:10Speaker 2: Drink some more of your cheap Russian beer over there,
- 28:12Speaker 2: you know, for you.
- 28:14Speaker 1: Do the Russians? Do? The Russians own flu Ribbons established
- 28:18Speaker 1: in Milwaukee, eighteen forty four. What I read on Facebook
- 28:22Speaker 1: is true, even if it came from the Russians. You
- 28:26Speaker 1: haven't even opened.
- 28:27Speaker 2: Your beer, No, I haven't.
- 28:29Speaker 1: Brian, Brian is the only one that's actually smart at
- 28:32Speaker 1: this table. Here's something to know about Brian. He he
- 28:35Speaker 1: is the most pretentious beer person I've ever met in
- 28:38Speaker 1: my life. Like, he doesn't live in Oregon. I mean,
- 28:41Speaker 1: is this like a surprise? I mean, like, does he
- 28:44Speaker 1: want like a kambucha delivered by subru micro brew made
- 28:49Speaker 1: by I don't know. I don't know what you do.
- 28:51Speaker 1: And you like dark beers. I like dark and your
- 28:54Speaker 1: beer the beers you like are as dark as my soul.
- 28:57Speaker 1: Your soul might be a little dark, just a little
- 29:01Speaker 1: bit cool. Thanks bro on that.
- 29:04Speaker 2: On that note, thought about it. Dark beer is the
- 29:07Speaker 2: key porter stout, sparel aged like multi, multi levels of
- 29:10Speaker 2: flavor in your mind.
- 29:11Speaker 1: So what's your favorite beer? Because you do like that
- 29:14Speaker 1: beer app?
- 29:15Speaker 2: Yeah, I do. Untapped. Untapped, that's the beer app.
- 29:19Speaker 1: So you can look it up and it'll give you
- 29:20Speaker 1: the tasting notes and flavors and rankings, and.
- 29:24Speaker 2: It does that a little bit. I use it as
- 29:26Speaker 2: a ranking thing so I can look up if I
- 29:27Speaker 2: had already had that beer or not, if it was
- 29:29Speaker 2: any good?
- 29:30Speaker 1: Okay, when you thought of it?
- 29:31Speaker 2: What I thought of it?
- 29:32Speaker 1: Interesting?
- 29:33Speaker 2: You rank it and you can leave notes and stuff.
- 29:34Speaker 1: Oh, Roger.
- 29:35Speaker 2: So it's fun because I travel a lot, and when
- 29:37Speaker 2: I do, I tend to eat at breweries a lot
- 29:39Speaker 2: because I get a sampler, enjoy all the all the
- 29:41Speaker 2: local beers.
- 29:42Speaker 1: But yeah, speaking of you eating, you now eat vegetables some.
- 29:47Speaker 2: I'm still a weird, picky eater.
- 29:48Speaker 1: That's You're the like anybody that actually knows Brian that's
- 29:51Speaker 1: listening to this podcast will be laughing right now. I've
- 29:53Speaker 1: never seen Brian be picky. Oh dear god. No. I
- 29:56Speaker 1: mean we've had many dinners together, and have you lived
- 29:59Speaker 1: with Brian different continents. No. But I'm just telling you, like,
- 30:03Speaker 1: maybe maybe the menu helps because then you can kind
- 30:06Speaker 1: of figure out what's in each thing. But I've never
- 30:07Speaker 1: seen you be Brian has married a vegan. I have,
- 30:10Speaker 1: and Brian has essentially become vegan.
- 30:13Speaker 2: No, not even close. I had a flame andon wrapped
- 30:15Speaker 2: in bacon the other day, like three days.
- 30:16Speaker 1: Yeah, because because you weren't around, Kate, I know you.
- 30:19Speaker 2: I would eat it in front.
- 30:20Speaker 1: You're like me when I get loose from Laura and
- 30:22Speaker 1: I like pretend to be cool and drink beers, but
- 30:25Speaker 1: at home, I like drink Seltzer water.
- 30:27Speaker 2: That's proble with my dog. I've seen that happen. Yeah,
- 30:30Speaker 2: that was That was last night.
- 30:32Speaker 1: It was within twenty four hours of eight thirty.
- 30:36Speaker 2: That's right.
- 30:36Speaker 1: I came home later. And you are an old soul, Matt.
- 30:39Speaker 1: I rather and I've noticed that from the very beginning
- 30:41Speaker 1: at twenty one, you were like the only consistent thing
- 30:44Speaker 1: in my life since I've been twenty one.
- 30:46Speaker 2: Perhaps it has been owned by people in different continents,
- 30:51Speaker 2: but you've continued drinking it either way.
- 30:52Speaker 1: You know, and I'm disgusting. I like it slightly warm. Oh.
- 30:56Speaker 2: One of the best photos I have of Matt Scott
- 30:59Speaker 2: is the Northwest over Len Rally. He was He flew
- 31:02Speaker 2: in for the event and he was given a press car,
- 31:04Speaker 2: a range Rover maybe autobiography beautiful car, beautiful car.
- 31:09Speaker 1: I remember this.
- 31:10Speaker 2: On his way, he had his flip flops on, he
- 31:13Speaker 2: had shorts on, he had probably a Hawaian print shirt on,
- 31:16Speaker 2: and he rolls up with a twenty.
- 31:18Speaker 3: Four pack of it was a thirty rack bro. I'm sorry,
- 31:21Speaker 3: I'm not at a time PBR still came in thirty round.
- 31:24Speaker 3: I'm not up on my PBR program. Here rolls up
- 31:26Speaker 3: and I just I walk up to him. The first
- 31:28Speaker 3: guy I sees him sitting on the tailgate of a
- 31:30Speaker 3: range Rover sport with his leg dangling off cracking.
- 31:33Speaker 2: A PBR showed up in the Northwest over Land Rally.
- 31:37Speaker 2: It was it was quintessential champagne budget PBR taste. Sometimes, yes,
- 31:42Speaker 2: sometimes he does love his rose too. I'm a rose slut, yes,
- 31:46Speaker 2: most gingers are.
- 31:47Speaker 1: I drank the Four Seasons Tanzania Safari Lodge out of rose.
- 31:51Speaker 1: That does not surprise me. Yeah yeah, that was mine. Like,
- 31:54Speaker 1: we're so sorry, mister Scott.
- 31:56Speaker 2: They didn't fly in more rose for you.
- 31:58Speaker 1: I mean they literally sent someone to RuSHA Yeah.
- 32:01Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 32:02Speaker 1: If anybody knows Tanzania, that's a way they understand that one.
- 32:05Speaker 2: It's a ways sampagne budget. Sometimes well points are awesome.
- 32:09Speaker 2: I'm a points ho I know, you know, like good.
- 32:12Speaker 2: But back to food. I am a super picky eater,
- 32:14Speaker 2: always have been meat, cheese, bread kind of guy. If
- 32:17Speaker 2: there's any color on my plate, I probably didn't eat
- 32:19Speaker 2: it. It was all brown, right, you want the rainbow on
- 32:22Speaker 2: your plate to eat healthy, and I didn't really do
- 32:24Speaker 2: that for a long time. But on the flip side,
- 32:25Speaker 2: I don't ever do fast food. I don't drink SODA's,
- 32:28Speaker 2: I don't drink energy drinks. I keep away from sugar generally.
- 32:32Speaker 2: I do a sweet tooth, but I try to not
- 32:34Speaker 2: get into that too much. I don't eat candy or
- 32:35Speaker 2: things like that. I love ice cream and escakes. My weakness, gotcha,
- 32:39Speaker 2: I don't do it that often. Matt Scott's on beer
- 32:43Speaker 2: number two. And I married a beautiful vegan and she
- 32:48Speaker 2: beautiful vegan, beautiful vegan. It's great.
- 32:51Speaker 1: It sucks Kate after this, like Ryan married a beautiful vegan.
- 32:54Speaker 2: My wife, Kate is a vegan. And yeah, she's been
- 32:58Speaker 2: great because she's really open my eye. I've always wanted
- 33:02Speaker 2: to eat more healthy and more vegetables, but I'm just
- 33:04Speaker 2: a picky eater and don't like most of that. But
- 33:06Speaker 2: she amazingly. We at home, we don't eat meat at all,
- 33:09Speaker 2: like not vegan, vegetarian, like we put cheese on it.
- 33:12Speaker 1: I just remember, like we just had lunch with the Bells,
- 33:16Speaker 1: Ashley and Richard Giordano. There's a whole grouping of Overlin
- 33:20Speaker 1: people sitting right outside of that door, and I think
- 33:24Speaker 1: you were eating a plate.
- 33:26Speaker 2: Of chips after the carp Did you take the pickled
- 33:31Speaker 2: cabbage off? Yes, Okay, he's not.
- 33:34Speaker 1: Actually, I'm I'm with Brian on this one. I mean,
- 33:37Speaker 1: because Aaron is vegetarian, she will eat fish, so I
- 33:41Speaker 1: don't eat. I mean I feel better eating less meat
- 33:45Speaker 1: in my diet. It doesn't mean that when I go
- 33:47Speaker 1: out to a dinner that I don't every once in
- 33:49Speaker 1: a while have steak I've never really liked chicken. I've
- 33:52Speaker 1: never really liked kind of a diseased meat. Like if
- 33:55Speaker 1: you're going to get sick from one meat, that's my
- 33:57Speaker 1: thought it's gonna be. And it's also it's also kind
- 33:59Speaker 1: of wholesale slaughter. I mean, like one meal is one chicken.
- 34:03Speaker 1: Like it's just like you can feed a family for
- 34:05Speaker 1: a year off of one cow. Yeah, so to me,
- 34:08Speaker 1: it seems like there's left. Let's just overall death happen.
- 34:11Speaker 1: There's this place that that ranches Spanish cows out by
- 34:15Speaker 1: where we live, the Aravoka Float. Yeah, and we should
- 34:19Speaker 1: split a cow. We should local meat. No, the Fokka float,
- 34:22Speaker 1: the Bacca floats, so hard to find good meat. Yeah,
- 34:25Speaker 1: I'm into it. I'm totally down with that. But I
- 34:26Speaker 1: get I get it, and I think you're right. I mean,
- 34:28Speaker 1: I have felt healthier, I mean for the last even
- 34:31Speaker 1: in a previous relationship, vegetarian, and I think eating that
- 34:35Speaker 1: way for now years, I feel better overall than when
- 34:39Speaker 1: I was eating meat all the time. So I don't
- 34:42Speaker 1: know that I would ever stop eating bacon. But see,
- 34:46Speaker 1: I'm not that big of a bacon guy. I think
- 34:48Speaker 1: bacon's quite pod Yeah, I'm just got fired from your
- 34:52Speaker 1: own podcast. I don't know. It's like, it's okay, I get,
- 34:57Speaker 1: I get. Everybody's got a different thing.
- 34:59Speaker 2: So bacon is the one thing that most vegetarians and
- 35:01Speaker 2: vegans will crack on. Kate will not.
- 35:04Speaker 1: But Aaron Erin has said that she's like, if I
- 35:06Speaker 1: was ever going to have meat, it would be bacon.
- 35:09Speaker 1: That would be the one thing. People who think bacon
- 35:11Speaker 1: is great and it's like their their die all meat
- 35:14Speaker 1: have not had two things Korean fried chicken and pork belly. Oh,
- 35:18Speaker 1: pork belly is pretty special. Pork pork belly is pretty
- 35:21Speaker 1: much bacon.
- 35:21Speaker 2: Let's be straight.
- 35:23Speaker 1: It all makes sense, it all makes sense. But it's
- 35:26Speaker 1: like bacon plus it's like it's like I'm gonna only
- 35:29Speaker 1: drive a Ford Mustang and then they've never driven like
- 35:33Speaker 1: a I don't know, like a Kia or something that's better.
- 35:35Speaker 2: Krispy Pepper. Bacon is better than pork belly. I know's
- 35:38Speaker 2: it's not the probably right opinion, but it's my opinion.
- 35:41Speaker 1: Yeah, maybe it's too fast. You know who those meats is?
- 35:43Speaker 1: The Koreans. Oh yeah, for sure, no doubt. My cousin's
- 35:47Speaker 1: wife is Korean and we went to Seoul with them
- 35:51Speaker 1: and I had the meat sweats for a week solid.
- 35:54Speaker 1: Like we'd go to like we'd go to like we'd
- 35:56Speaker 1: go to like these meat markets, and then above of
- 36:00Speaker 1: the meat market are these like restaurants with the you know,
- 36:03Speaker 1: the Korean barbecue things, and they bring the kim chiese
- 36:05Speaker 1: and the little sides and stuff. I have never seen a
- 36:08Speaker 1: little Korean woman eat so much. I mean, Brian, she
- 36:11Speaker 1: could out bacon you. So me is a cool.
- 36:14Speaker 2: Chick, no doubt.
- 36:16Speaker 1: Nice.
- 36:16Speaker 2: Yeah, there we go, and I'm ready to go to
- 36:18Speaker 2: sold now.
- 36:20Speaker 1: To be honest, to be honest with soul. Like as
- 36:23Speaker 1: far as eating, I think if you're not like a
- 36:26Speaker 1: super super adventurous eater, I think that Koreans have a
- 36:30Speaker 1: more similar palate to Americans than most other Asian countries. Interesting,
- 36:36Speaker 1: like but they'll they're perfectionists, right, Like they will take
- 36:41Speaker 1: fried chicken, which was kind of well fried chickens everywhere,
- 36:43Speaker 1: but like American style fried chicken, and then they'll take
- 36:46Speaker 1: it like to the next levels. It's twice fried, so
- 36:49Speaker 1: it's fried chicken that's not terrible. Like if you have KFC,
- 36:53Speaker 1: now you're gonna be like, hey, that's yeah. I'm just
- 36:57Speaker 1: saying like they're like the you like, the only fast
- 37:00Speaker 1: food chain that is anywhere and everywhere in the world,
- 37:03Speaker 1: Kentucky Chicken, Kentucky. It's insane and I did not know
- 37:06Speaker 1: that until I started traveling. You would think it'd be McDonald's. Nope,
- 37:09Speaker 1: you go to Iceland, there's no McDonald's.
- 37:11Speaker 2: Therefc, KFC and Burger Kings been owned by the same company. Yeah,
- 37:15Speaker 2: and pizza.
- 37:15Speaker 1: When when Chris Cordes and I went to went to
- 37:18Speaker 1: China together, it was like we went from looking at
- 37:21Speaker 1: frogs for sale in the market right next to a KFC.
- 37:24Speaker 1: Chicken tasted like people love chicken.
- 37:27Speaker 2: Here's the Here's the top secret Asian best food. One
- 37:30Speaker 2: of the best meals I've had in my life. Nice
- 37:31Speaker 2: Eco Japan. There's eight types of ramen in the world,
- 37:34Speaker 2: and one of them comes from nice Eco Japan, and
- 37:36Speaker 2: you can't get it anywhere else. We've tried to make
- 37:38Speaker 2: it at home, and Kate does a good job, but
- 37:39Speaker 2: it's not quite right potato ramen.
- 37:43Speaker 1: If you asked Laura very nicely, I'm sure she would
- 37:45Speaker 1: be able to make it. This.
- 37:46Speaker 2: This girl requires special tools.
- 37:48Speaker 1: She makes she has the presence. She has like the
- 37:50Speaker 1: noodle things, she has the foamer.
- 37:52Speaker 2: The folmer is the key.
- 37:53Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 37:54Speaker 2: No, no, there's a foamer thing. Like weren't we just talking.
- 37:56Speaker 1: About this last line? You're like, you should tear that
- 37:57Speaker 1: wall down in your house, and I'm like, I guarantee
- 37:59Speaker 1: you by the end of the year that will be
- 38:01Speaker 1: filled with like some kind of specialty kitchen equipment. There's
- 38:05Speaker 1: going to be.
- 38:06Speaker 2: As a large kitchen and lots and lots of storage,
- 38:08Speaker 2: like a lot, and there's a wall between half a
- 38:11Speaker 2: wall between the kitchen and the living room. And I'm like, yeah,
- 38:13Speaker 2: it'd be better if that was like down, you know,
- 38:15Speaker 2: that's true. No, that's true, so you could cook and
- 38:17Speaker 2: watch them like I kind of agree.
- 38:18Speaker 1: But you also don't eat the food that I do
- 38:20Speaker 1: every night, that's true. So yeah, priorities. So on the
- 38:23Speaker 1: food thing, since you just talked about eating healthy and
- 38:25Speaker 1: no fast food, I think that the one question I
- 38:29Speaker 1: wanted to ask. There was several, but the one that
- 38:31Speaker 1: was most important to me is how do you how
- 38:34Speaker 1: do you rank being physically fit for travel? Because it's
- 38:37Speaker 1: it's an interesting thing that I've encountered in my in
- 38:40Speaker 1: my travels. I always try to maintain a base level
- 38:42Speaker 1: of fitness and strength. I mean big spare tires and
- 38:44Speaker 1: all these things that we have to do recoveries and
- 38:46Speaker 1: everything else moving the luggage around. Which big spare tires?
- 38:50Speaker 1: Can we talk about the ones that we boll Yeah,
- 38:52Speaker 1: that's why I can carry a spare tires and maintain
- 38:55Speaker 1: a level of fitness. So I try to maintain like
- 38:59Speaker 1: enough fitness to be an effective traveler. But how have
- 39:02Speaker 1: you found that being really adventure ready, like at your
- 39:06Speaker 1: level of fitness, how has that changed your travels and
- 39:09Speaker 1: what would you recommend people consider around fitness for overland travel.
- 39:14Speaker 2: Yeah? Wow, I mean my fitness ebbs and flows for sure,
- 39:18Speaker 2: And it's usually based on injuries, whether injuries from adventure
- 39:21Speaker 2: sports or old injuries from adventure sports that pop back up.
- 39:24Speaker 2: My back's destroyed, and so like right now, I'm super unfit. Really,
- 39:29Speaker 2: I haven't been working out much at all, but I've
- 39:31Speaker 2: been traveling a ton, and I always feel worse when
- 39:34Speaker 2: I don't work out and I'm not ready for the
- 39:36Speaker 2: adventure because I tend to go and do. When I
- 39:38Speaker 2: go and do things, I don't kind of do them halfway,
- 39:41Speaker 2: like I haven't been mountain biking a while, and I'm like, okay,
- 39:43Speaker 2: I'm gonna go solo the Watsatz crestrail. I'll be fine
- 39:45Speaker 2: on thousand vertical ascent, thirty eight hundred down double black
- 39:48Speaker 2: downhill trails or whatever on my enduro bike. It's fine,
- 39:51Speaker 2: and it works out fine, and I do it and
- 39:53Speaker 2: I have fun. But when you get to the bottom
- 39:55Speaker 2: and you try to wake up the next day and
- 39:56Speaker 2: you can't get out of bed because your back doesn't work,
- 39:58Speaker 2: it's kind of rough. Ame all one hundred percent. But
- 40:01Speaker 2: last summer I ran my first Ultra, so like sixty
- 40:03Speaker 2: plus miles and I was like, in the best shape
- 40:05Speaker 2: of my life.
- 40:06Speaker 1: Wasn't that for your fortieth birthday?
- 40:08Speaker 2: Yeah, for my fortieth birthday. Always want that fascinating run
- 40:10Speaker 2: an Ultra Before I turned forty and COVID hit and
- 40:14Speaker 2: the world ended, so there was no events, so I
- 40:16Speaker 2: just decided to do it myself anyway. So I went
- 40:19Speaker 2: and did the right of a Portland in Forest Park.
- 40:22Speaker 2: There's the Wildwood Trail and it's thirty point two miles
- 40:25Speaker 2: each way and a huge ascent I forget, but totally
- 40:28Speaker 2: it goes up and over this kind of huge, illuptipitic mansion.
- 40:30Speaker 2: And I did that out and back, so sixty point
- 40:34Speaker 2: four miles and it hurt, but I did solo. I
- 40:37Speaker 2: had a couple of friends hop in and kind of
- 40:38Speaker 2: pace me a little bit and make sure I didn't
- 40:39Speaker 2: die too much. I fell over on a true route
- 40:42Speaker 2: once on the way back because I was just not
- 40:44Speaker 2: operating at full capacity at like fifty something miles.
- 40:47Speaker 1: What qualifies as an ultra marathon?
- 40:49Speaker 2: Anything over a marathon is technically twenty six points Okay,
- 40:55Speaker 2: it's technically an ultra, I got it. So like a
- 40:57Speaker 2: fifty k is like thirty point thirty one.
- 41:00Speaker 1: What's the general standard like when people really start to
- 41:03Speaker 1: see that being as legit.
- 41:04Speaker 2: My personal standard, which I always hold myself way too
- 41:07Speaker 2: high of a standard, is fifty miles or longer.
- 41:09Speaker 1: Okay, so essentially twice a marathon.
- 41:12Speaker 2: Yeah. So I wanted to go run fifty plus miles
- 41:15Speaker 2: in under twelve hours. That was my goal in a race.
- 41:17Speaker 2: There's no races, so I just did it myself, and
- 41:20Speaker 2: this just was an easy goal. It was like five
- 41:22Speaker 2: miles from my house. My wife supported me along the way.
- 41:25Speaker 2: She'd joined. Like it crosses a couple of roads, and
- 41:27Speaker 2: the rest of the time you're in the woods and
- 41:29Speaker 2: she'd stop and give me some more water, food or
- 41:31Speaker 2: a change of clothes. At halfway I got all fresh clothes,
- 41:34Speaker 2: which was amazing because it was the middle of the summer.
- 41:36Speaker 2: Milligallizes it super hot. Yeah, it was. It was a blast.
- 41:38Speaker 2: I mean I always said I wouldn't do it again
- 41:40Speaker 2: when I when I was finished it, But it's just
- 41:41Speaker 2: like marathon, It's like, oh yeah, I'll do another one.
- 41:43Speaker 2: Why not? So the next goal is under twenty four
- 41:46Speaker 2: hour hundred miler at some point, I'm not in shape
- 41:48Speaker 2: right now to do it, but that's it'll be. It's
- 41:50Speaker 2: on the bucket list.
- 41:51Speaker 1: And would that would be a trail race or do
- 41:52Speaker 1: you want to do something that's more flat? And I mean,
- 41:55Speaker 1: what's your what's your goal on that hot milor.
- 41:57Speaker 2: I very much like running in the woods more than
- 42:00Speaker 2: just pounding pavement, and my joints and old man back
- 42:03Speaker 2: very much appreciate trail over gotcha, So I don't. And
- 42:05Speaker 2: I like the type two suffering when it comes to
- 42:09Speaker 2: the elevation change. So trail run for sure, but hopefully
- 42:13Speaker 2: not at out suit because that hurts me. I live
- 42:15Speaker 2: at sea level right now, but coming up here even
- 42:17Speaker 2: to press getting stuff five to seven thousand foot between
- 42:20Speaker 2: here and flag and even at Matt's wedding at like
- 42:22Speaker 2: eleven thousand foot and I did like an eighteen mile
- 42:24Speaker 2: bike ride the morning.
- 42:25Speaker 1: All you needed was one of these.
- 42:27Speaker 2: Yeah, one pbr Yeah that was so I got up
- 42:29Speaker 2: super early the morning of Matt's wedding and did an
- 42:31Speaker 2: eighteen plus mile bike ride with like fourteen hundred vertical
- 42:34Speaker 2: ascent and twenty eight down. It was. It was rough.
- 42:37Speaker 2: It hurt at eleven thousand feet. So again, being adventure ready,
- 42:41Speaker 2: like you said, is for me. I do I try
- 42:44Speaker 2: to do when I'm working out a lot. I try
- 42:46Speaker 2: to every day do push ups. Every time I go
- 42:49Speaker 2: in and out of my room. I have a pull
- 42:50Speaker 2: up bar on my office in the doorway and try
- 42:53Speaker 2: to hammer out a couple of pull ups.
- 42:54Speaker 1: That's smart, just kind of a good foot.
- 42:56Speaker 2: I got a little campus board in the entrance way
- 42:59Speaker 2: to my grie so it's the same kind of thing.
- 43:01Speaker 2: Like every time I go in and out, I try
- 43:02Speaker 2: to at least to a pull And.
- 43:03Speaker 1: That's that's the little like climbing with a bunch of
- 43:06Speaker 1: different holes on is that what that's exactly Yea.
- 43:08Speaker 2: We could get those here when you have above the door.
- 43:11Speaker 1: We have a gym next door that none of us use.
- 43:13Speaker 1: We also have an electric scooter or a gas station
- 43:16Speaker 1: to get red bulls.
- 43:17Speaker 2: That's like me wanting I really want to one wheel.
- 43:20Speaker 2: They're really really fun. Yeah, but if I got one,
- 43:22Speaker 2: I would never walk. I hate walking. I'll run, but
- 43:24Speaker 2: I hate walking.
- 43:25Speaker 1: It's boring. I don't moving your legs about is just
- 43:28Speaker 1: it hurts, like the very nineteenth century, like.
- 43:31Speaker 2: Like biking and running. Bicycling and running are like a
- 43:34Speaker 2: good speed. You can see the world at a really
- 43:36Speaker 2: good pace.
- 43:37Speaker 1: Ye Do you kind of think hiking's boring? I always
- 43:39Speaker 1: think hiking's boring sometimes.
- 43:41Speaker 2: Like hiking is ridiculously boring unless it's somewhere really special
- 43:44Speaker 2: the only way to get there and get some epic photo.
- 43:47Speaker 1: How would you ever get a date on Tender if
- 43:49Speaker 1: you didn't have hiking in your profile? I'm I'm pre
- 43:52Speaker 1: tender and I'm done with that. Did you ever have
- 43:56Speaker 1: to do Tinder? I did? Yeah, yeah I never did.
- 43:59Speaker 1: You had to have hiking on there, you have to
- 44:01Speaker 1: I didn't love hiking. Oh you didn't know hiking? How
- 44:04Speaker 1: many dates did you get? The first date was hiking,
- 44:07Speaker 1: that's the best part. But then but then you ended
- 44:09Speaker 1: up meeting a lovely wife, like through friends. I believe
- 44:12Speaker 1: that she liked your jacket at a mutual friend's wedding
- 44:15Speaker 1: or something. She thought I looked outdoorsy with my she said.
- 44:18Speaker 1: She told she she told us the story, and she's like,
- 44:21Speaker 1: was that good looking outdoorsy guy.
- 44:23Speaker 2: A mutual friend's wedding? Yeah, but didn't meet her there,
- 44:26Speaker 2: that's the fun part. She stalked me afterwards, and then
- 44:28Speaker 2: then we did it. I never saw I never saw
- 44:30Speaker 2: her at the wedding. I kind of feel bad about that. Actually,
- 44:33Speaker 2: she was hanging out with her mom, and I was
- 44:34Speaker 2: hanging out with like a group of friends that I've
- 44:36Speaker 2: had for longer than any other friends that I know other.
- 44:39Speaker 1: Associated women you met on tender. There was no time
- 44:41Speaker 1: to hit me, Kate. Don't on the fitness thing, because
- 44:44Speaker 1: this is something that Scott and I will never be
- 44:46Speaker 1: able to answer for our readers.
- 44:48Speaker 2: Ever, that's fit. I don't know what you're talking about
- 44:50Speaker 2: me right now.
- 44:52Speaker 1: Sure, so as long as it doesn't involve the running part, yeah, okay,
- 44:59Speaker 1: So let's just not put Matt in that position of
- 45:01Speaker 1: choosing between friends Scott.
- 45:03Speaker 2: Scott beat me on the Trek expedition by like one
- 45:05Speaker 2: hundred feet. We went different ways, so I don't know
- 45:07Speaker 2: who was fast.
- 45:08Speaker 1: In running or like like like highlift Jack wins.
- 45:12Speaker 2: It was a navigation running thing and he'd be like
- 45:14Speaker 2: one hundred feet to the cars, but a different route,
- 45:17Speaker 2: So I don't know whose was longer. So I don't
- 45:18Speaker 2: know who you might I think you chose the better route,
- 45:20Speaker 2: so that made him faster.
- 45:21Speaker 1: I think.
- 45:22Speaker 2: So he's smarter runner than me.
- 45:24Speaker 1: I did start ahead of you too, so that's that
- 45:27Speaker 1: that helped as well. We're going to take a brief
- 45:30Speaker 1: break and we will be right back. This week's episode
- 45:33Speaker 1: is supported in part by I Camper to make innovative
- 45:37Speaker 1: hard shell and soft sided roof tents that are designed
- 45:41Speaker 1: to survive long term overland use. Their revolutionary X cover
- 45:45Speaker 1: won the Overland Journal Editor's Choice Award, eliminating the bulky
- 45:49Speaker 1: PBC cover and also allowing for the fitment of crossbars
- 45:53Speaker 1: for carrying bikes and kayaks. Their Skycamp Mini is another
- 45:57Speaker 1: award winning design that provides a hard shell in the
- 46:00Speaker 1: footprint of a much smaller clamshell model. This is the
- 46:03Speaker 1: perfect solution for smaller vehicles or on vehicles where rack
- 46:08Speaker 1: space is dedicated to other systems. I Camper believes that
- 46:11Speaker 1: the best times are those spent traveling, discovering the world
- 46:15Speaker 1: with those you love most. You can find out more
- 46:17Speaker 1: about their quality tents at Kamper dot com. So if
- 46:22Speaker 1: you're living on the road, if you're doing a van life,
- 46:24Speaker 1: what are like, what are three easy things to stay
- 46:28Speaker 1: you know, because not everybody can bring a bike with
- 46:29Speaker 1: them because they do take up a lot of space.
- 46:32Speaker 1: Sometimes they can't rehire acts or whatever. But you should
- 46:35Speaker 1: bring a bike. That's that's really fun. What are like
- 46:37Speaker 1: three easy things that people that are doing the life
- 46:41Speaker 1: on the road, whether it's van or a roof ten
- 46:43Speaker 1: or whatever, how would you recommend that they stay fit?
- 46:46Speaker 1: Because I always think like when you're fit, you're at
- 46:48Speaker 1: a better mental state. You enjoy things more, You interact
- 46:51Speaker 1: with the community, you actor the terrain, you interact with
- 46:54Speaker 1: the environment.
- 46:55Speaker 2: More, more energy.
- 46:56Speaker 1: Yeah, good, Yeah, what are those three things?
- 46:59Speaker 2: Three things? No bikes, no kayaks? I mean running shoes.
- 47:02Speaker 1: It's easy.
- 47:03Speaker 2: You gotta have like multiple running shoes. I have more
- 47:06Speaker 2: shoes than my wife, Like, I have trail running shoes too.
- 47:10Speaker 2: Trail running shoes, road running shoes. You gotta have at
- 47:12Speaker 2: least two because you got to swap out you're putting
- 47:14Speaker 2: when you're putting in big miles. And then you got
- 47:16Speaker 2: bike shoes, road bike shoes, kayaks shoes, creaking shoes, playboat
- 47:20Speaker 2: shoes for the kayaks. Like, there's so many shoes, so
- 47:22Speaker 2: let's see. Yeah, appropriate footwear for getting out there and adventuring.
- 47:25Speaker 2: That's one one that's really good that I don't do enough,
- 47:29Speaker 2: at least for me, is just those elastic bands, like
- 47:33Speaker 2: the ones you get from PT, like they cut it
- 47:35Speaker 2: off a whole different weights. Those are really good for
- 47:38Speaker 2: shoulder exercise and stuff. I've blown out shoulders and having
- 47:41Speaker 2: like like joints for your elbows and wrists and shoulders
- 47:45Speaker 2: that work properly. You have better posture when you're sitting,
- 47:48Speaker 2: and you just feel better. You can go do so
- 47:51Speaker 2: much stuff when all those little ligaments are strong. Even
- 47:53Speaker 2: if your big muscles aren't strong, you're just better. You
- 47:55Speaker 2: can handle way more abuse when you crash and stuff
- 47:58Speaker 2: like that. And what do you use for flexibility?
- 48:01Speaker 1: Because when I think of being adventure ready, there's three
- 48:04Speaker 1: things that come to mind. Stability is one of the
- 48:06Speaker 1: most important, so we don't fall a lot of injuries
- 48:09Speaker 1: that happen in the back country, so stability comes to mind.
- 48:13Speaker 1: Flexibility is the other thing that comes to mind, which
- 48:15Speaker 1: is going to reduce our chances of injury. And then
- 48:18Speaker 1: obviously we want to have a degree of strength. Cardiovascular
- 48:21Speaker 1: fitness can happen in a bunch of different ways. But
- 48:24Speaker 1: when I think about being adventure ready, the things that
- 48:26Speaker 1: I find is you want to have a little bit
- 48:28Speaker 1: of fuel in the tank. You want to have some
- 48:29Speaker 1: cardiovascular fitness. But if I'm if I'm stretching well and
- 48:34Speaker 1: i'm and I have good stability and I have good strength,
- 48:36Speaker 1: I'm able to kind of do all of the things
- 48:37Speaker 1: the highlift jacking and the tires and all of that,
- 48:40Speaker 1: what do you use for flexibility? I mean, what's your
- 48:44Speaker 1: focus around that.
- 48:45Speaker 2: I'm horrible of That is the truth. I'm ready and
- 48:47Speaker 2: that's why I'm really flexible, but I don't work on
- 48:50Speaker 2: it enough and it definitely hinders my performance.
- 48:53Speaker 1: Yeah, I think that for me too.
- 48:54Speaker 2: When the best thing that I've found for that, honestly
- 48:57Speaker 2: is like bick from yoga, like once a week even,
- 49:00Speaker 2: Uh what is I know what yoga is and I
- 49:04Speaker 2: have been sold on it, like it's fantastic.
- 49:06Speaker 1: We do it like at night before bed and I'm
- 49:09Speaker 1: just very like I sleep better. What's what does bickram mean?
- 49:13Speaker 2: Bicker I think it's a form. It's a type of yoga,
- 49:16Speaker 2: but they do it hot. Sometimes there's really hot yoga
- 49:19Speaker 2: that's slightly different, but normal brom yoga. I think it's
- 49:22Speaker 2: just like kind of the normal based yoga. I think
- 49:24Speaker 2: I'm really bad.
- 49:25Speaker 1: I don't know that I will put it in the
- 49:27Speaker 1: in the show.
- 49:27Speaker 2: Yeah, we're gonna there's a show notes we'll just the
- 49:30Speaker 2: definition of bickram yoga. But I know that's the type
- 49:32Speaker 2: that I've done a bunch of and it basically like
- 49:35Speaker 2: it's strength, balance, flexibility kind of combined. And it's a
- 49:39Speaker 2: lot of like stretchy postures while like holding a pose,
- 49:43Speaker 2: you're locking off a few muscles and stretching others. And
- 49:46Speaker 2: I find that really useful, especially for core like me
- 49:49Speaker 2: with the back. I have a tall torso like I
- 49:51Speaker 2: got the same problem Matt's got yeah, and CARGI bill, Yeah,
- 49:56Speaker 2: and it just messes your back up. So the stronger
- 49:58Speaker 2: your core is the more less back pain I have
- 50:01Speaker 2: and the more fit you can be. If your big
- 50:03Speaker 2: core muscles are strong, and even if you have twigs
- 50:05Speaker 2: for arms and legs, you can manage to do a
- 50:07Speaker 2: lot of things really well, especially if you have good forms.
- 50:10Speaker 2: So even at kayaking, like professional kayakers, like they have
- 50:13Speaker 2: thin arms, they're not all bulked out. They have pretty
- 50:15Speaker 2: big shoulders and really good apps because it's all core.
- 50:19Speaker 2: If you have good form. They have horrible form. You
- 50:22Speaker 2: have biceps the size of Popeye.
- 50:23Speaker 1: But yeah, but those will get smoked pretty quickly. Quick. Yeah,
- 50:27Speaker 1: use the big muscles. Yeah, that's interesting about that. With
- 50:30Speaker 1: the yoga, I agree, and that's definitely been something that
- 50:34Speaker 1: I have had a lot of success with. I need
- 50:36Speaker 1: to do it way more, you know, if you go
- 50:38Speaker 1: on to YouTube or any of the other tubes depending
- 50:41Speaker 1: on what you're doing. So I would do an after
- 50:43Speaker 1: run yoga session that was specifically for running, and like
- 50:47Speaker 1: the recovery would could improve by hours, if not days,
- 50:51Speaker 1: like it was this. I'm not twenty anymore, so like
- 50:54Speaker 1: doing that after exercise stretching like that was such a
- 50:57Speaker 1: big deal.
- 50:58Speaker 2: It helps.
- 50:59Speaker 1: I'm always scared of doing yoga classes because every time
- 51:02Speaker 1: I've done them, I just swear like a sailor.
- 51:05Speaker 2: Like I just fall over dead quiet and he's in
- 51:08Speaker 2: the core swearing that's great.
- 51:09Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, Or you didn't do your noma stay man,
- 51:12Speaker 1: you get.
- 51:13Speaker 2: A yeah, I won't do that, a center of your chi
- 51:15Speaker 2: or something, Yeah I won't.
- 51:17Speaker 1: I won't do that. I don't do I usually just
- 51:20Speaker 1: fall over like you try, like some of those ones.
- 51:22Speaker 1: You're really I.
- 51:23Speaker 2: Love the balance. Also, balancing ones are my favorite.
- 51:25Speaker 1: That's awesome.
- 51:26Speaker 2: Love like slack lining and trying like yoga pos while slacklining.
- 51:30Speaker 2: I love.
- 51:30Speaker 1: That's amazing.
- 51:31Speaker 2: Super balancing and you can you you you can think
- 51:34Speaker 2: through all the little muscles in your body like as
- 51:37Speaker 2: things are happening, Like you can think of individual ad
- 51:39Speaker 2: muscles and contract them and like get yourself the balance.
- 51:42Speaker 2: And I love that, like body awareness, and it's something
- 51:44Speaker 2: that I wish I learned. I'm gonna I'm gonna impart
- 51:47Speaker 2: on my daughter for sure, is like body awareness. Like
- 51:50Speaker 2: so I love adventure sports and snowboarding and in line skating.
- 51:55Speaker 2: Back in the day and all that was I was
- 51:56Speaker 2: a fruit bitter it happened, but getting when I get inverted,
- 52:00Speaker 2: So like wakeboarding I tried tantrums, there's like a laid
- 52:02Speaker 2: out backflip and land on my head every time. It's
- 52:04Speaker 2: because once I'm in the air, things get wonky and
- 52:07Speaker 2: I just don't have it figured out. One thing that
- 52:09Speaker 2: I want to impart on my kid early is body
- 52:11Speaker 2: awareness and like how to spot landings and that kind
- 52:14Speaker 2: of stuff. And even if they're not into any of that,
- 52:16Speaker 2: it's fine, but it's really good for even if you
- 52:18Speaker 2: fall or anything else, you just roll and all that
- 52:20Speaker 2: kind of stuff comes automatic when you really understand what's
- 52:23Speaker 2: going on around you, and when you're inverted, your brain
- 52:26Speaker 2: still operates properly.
- 52:27Speaker 1: Yeah. Interesting, So I'm going to do a subject change here.
- 52:30Speaker 1: Oh so prior to you getting done with the fitness done.
- 52:35Speaker 1: The only thing I can add is that during yoga,
- 52:38Speaker 1: I'm mainly just thinking about how terrified I am of farting.
- 52:43Speaker 1: Like that's like people some people find it very relaxing.
- 52:46Speaker 1: It's incredibly stressful for me.
- 52:48Speaker 2: Well, you just gotta let it. I know it sounds like,
- 52:49Speaker 2: don't hold that in.
- 52:51Speaker 1: How it's a room full of people, How do they
- 52:52Speaker 1: know it was you? Because I love be the one giggly.
- 52:56Speaker 2: You give yourself away. You've got to work on your pokempace, buddy,
- 53:00Speaker 2: you just look over it. You know.
- 53:02Speaker 1: I cannot do poker.
- 53:03Speaker 2: I know.
- 53:03Speaker 1: The only time I'm near a poker table is when
- 53:05Speaker 1: we're in Las Vegas and I'm drinking the free beer
- 53:08Speaker 1: that they give you because I'm winning, because you're winning,
- 53:11Speaker 1: and then I drink it.
- 53:12Speaker 2: It's good fun.
- 53:13Speaker 1: Yeah. Cool. So I'm glad we've established that I have
- 53:16Speaker 1: no poker face. But so before you and Kate got married,
- 53:19Speaker 1: you guys flew to South America. You bought a fore Runner.
- 53:23Speaker 1: I did some stuff, went a little bit sideways, so
- 53:29Speaker 1: almost to the end of the right. So where did
- 53:30Speaker 1: you fly into.
- 53:31Speaker 2: I flew into Santiago right before New Year's so we
- 53:34Speaker 2: got to spend New Year's Eve in downtown santiagogs.
- 53:37Speaker 1: And that's where you bought the fore Runner. Was that
- 53:40Speaker 1: I finally convinced this guy like Brian, you should just
- 53:42Speaker 1: buy toyotas. They're really reliable, super reliable.
- 53:47Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 53:47Speaker 1: Was it? Was it a North American registered? So did
- 53:51Speaker 1: you buy it from another or it was a South America.
- 53:53Speaker 2: I got basically the Chilean version of a SoC security
- 53:56Speaker 2: number down there. I went through the paperwork so I
- 53:58Speaker 2: could buy whatever I wanted and have it Chile and
- 54:00Speaker 2: plate it in.
- 54:01Speaker 1: Okay, legal, sure cool.
- 54:02Speaker 2: Chile's one of the few countries you can actually do
- 54:04Speaker 2: that as a foreigner, so it's pretty painless. There's a
- 54:08Speaker 2: huge lines in paperworking nonsense. But there's like two or
- 54:10Speaker 2: three companies down there that will help you through that process.
- 54:12Speaker 2: You pay them a little bit. It's pretty minimal, totally
- 54:14Speaker 2: worth it in that way. I don't know that the
- 54:16Speaker 2: fly and buy program is worth it. My plan was
- 54:19Speaker 2: I looked at all the rental rates and we're gonna
- 54:20Speaker 2: be there for about two months. And I was like
- 54:22Speaker 2: a rental rate like eight grand for like a high
- 54:25Speaker 2: lux or something like a basic one not even outfitted
- 54:27Speaker 2: with a camp or anything for two months. And I'm like,
- 54:30Speaker 2: this isn't gonna work. I don't have that kind of money.
- 54:31Speaker 2: So we were like, all right, we'll fly down. I
- 54:33Speaker 2: worked out the program. I was like, I'll buy a
- 54:35Speaker 2: car for you know, between eight and fifteen grand, so
- 54:38Speaker 2: it's semi reliable. Make sure they go through all the fluids,
- 54:40Speaker 2: make sure it's good, and then take off for two
- 54:42Speaker 2: months and sell it for similar might lose two or
- 54:45Speaker 2: three grand. Two or three grand I can I can
- 54:46Speaker 2: eat that for two months of travel for living in
- 54:49Speaker 2: the vehicle. We got down there, we were my wife
- 54:51Speaker 2: and I were both really sick. We had some flu
- 54:54Speaker 2: thing for like a while. So New Year's Eve was rough.
- 54:57Speaker 2: We're like walking around downtown like not drinking or anything,
- 55:00Speaker 2: and they stumbling around because we're like delirious. But we
- 55:03Speaker 2: saw the fireworks and stuff. It was an amazing scene
- 55:05Speaker 2: to be a part of.
- 55:05Speaker 1: Yeah, Santiago was great, cool city. Really. Yeah.
- 55:08Speaker 2: In San Diego, we worked with another with one of
- 55:11Speaker 2: these handler companies to try to find a car. They
- 55:13Speaker 2: were not a great help, to be honest with you.
- 55:16Speaker 2: We searched a ton I even testro a few. They
- 55:18Speaker 2: do not take care of their vehicles in Chile. It's
- 55:20Speaker 2: just how it is, Like I don't understand, because the
- 55:22Speaker 2: vehicles are super expensive, like way more expensive than North
- 55:25Speaker 2: America to buy new and then in relevance used, and
- 55:29Speaker 2: they just don't take care of them. They don't do
- 55:30Speaker 2: oil changes, they don't repair the springs. I guess they
- 55:33Speaker 2: just blow all their money on buying it and then
- 55:35Speaker 2: they can't maintain it or something. But they're like, oh,
- 55:37Speaker 2: Russ free and da da da da dah, and I
- 55:39Speaker 2: drive the thing. It's just like the biggest Russ bucket.
- 55:41Speaker 2: The shocks are blown everything. Like, I don't want to
- 55:43Speaker 2: I don't have the money to update this thing to
- 55:46Speaker 2: use it. So after a few of those experiences, we
- 55:49Speaker 2: found through that agency another traveling couple that was leaving
- 55:53Speaker 2: and they had been traveling in it for like five
- 55:55Speaker 2: months as a forerunner. It was chile and plated. It
- 55:58Speaker 2: was like an O six with the V six in it,
- 55:59Speaker 2: the if you six gas motor. And I was like,
- 56:01Speaker 2: it's a fore Runner, it's not. I wanted something interesting.
- 56:03Speaker 2: I was looking at a lot of neibas. I was like,
- 56:05Speaker 2: mister Bishi Montero's. I was looking at things that like,
- 56:07Speaker 2: we can't really get here easily. And because I wanted
- 56:10Speaker 2: to write stories and I wanted something fun, I wanted
- 56:11Speaker 2: driving experience. I'm always looking for the next interesting driving experience.
- 56:15Speaker 2: So I was like, all right, it was the most
- 56:16Speaker 2: boring thing ever, but it's.
- 56:17Speaker 1: Gonna be rad Why into a for erunner?
- 56:19Speaker 2: Yeah? And he talked me into a four erunner and
- 56:21Speaker 2: I was like, all right, it's the most reliable thing.
- 56:22Speaker 2: Of course, we can sleep inside it's like perfect, screw it,
- 56:25Speaker 2: I'll buy it. It's good to go. I was like
- 56:26Speaker 2: eight and a half grand bought it. Two weeks later,
- 56:29Speaker 2: we had made it to almost two Ushwai, like a
- 56:32Speaker 2: couple hundred miles away in southern Argentina, and the engine
- 56:36Speaker 2: just seized like see we pulled over the side of
- 56:38Speaker 2: the road like seized nothing. So I was communicating with
- 56:41Speaker 2: mad and a couple other people through my garment in reach,
- 56:44Speaker 2: texting from the other side of the globe, like, uh,
- 56:47Speaker 2: what can I do? Is there anything I can do here?
- 56:49Speaker 2: Like I was at a lot. I mean, the engine
- 56:51Speaker 2: wouldn't turn over. I had plenty of battery, I had
- 56:53Speaker 2: all the things, but it was seized, like the piston
- 56:55Speaker 2: was seized in the block. So the coolant the head
- 56:56Speaker 2: gasket had failed and the coolant we think coolan gott
- 56:59Speaker 2: in the engine. Waited on the side of road for three hours.
- 57:02Speaker 2: A cool traveling couple from Guatemala had a F one
- 57:05Speaker 2: fifty with a truck camper in it and pulled over.
- 57:08Speaker 2: We waved them down. We're in the middle of nowhere
- 57:10Speaker 2: on this highway, and they towed us up and over
- 57:13Speaker 2: a mountain through the checkpoint into Chile to the closest
- 57:16Speaker 2: town because also in Argentina they don't sell the gas
- 57:18Speaker 2: moa or they only sell a diesel in that car.
- 57:20Speaker 2: They wouldn't even have the parts if we were to
- 57:21Speaker 2: find there's no towns down there in Argentina anyway. But
- 57:23Speaker 2: so we made it over there through a storm. On
- 57:25Speaker 2: that note, like the thing I always tell people to
- 57:28Speaker 2: travel with or to start to get off road and
- 57:30Speaker 2: overland travel is a set of really good traction boards.
- 57:33Speaker 2: So Max Tracks will give you a plug there, Matt,
- 57:35Speaker 2: thanks bro. They work. I literally carry them around the world.
- 57:39Speaker 2: So a set of Max tracks, two soft shackles, and
- 57:42Speaker 2: a toe strap, and those items are what I carried
- 57:46Speaker 2: with me for the vehicle from the US down there
- 57:48Speaker 2: I used. I didn't use the Max tracks because car
- 57:50Speaker 2: seized before we got to the good off road stuff.
- 57:52Speaker 2: But the strap and the soft shackle is what we use.
- 57:56Speaker 2: So I was on a short strap and it happened
- 57:57Speaker 2: it was a recovery strap, not a toe strap, so
- 58:00Speaker 2: a little springy. So up and over a mountain through
- 58:03Speaker 2: an insane wind and rainstorm short strapped on a camper
- 58:07Speaker 2: that I can't see past.
- 58:09Speaker 1: Was interesting.
- 58:10Speaker 2: Let's say the least, no power steering at that point,
- 58:12Speaker 2: no power breaks, assist, nothing, But I managed to keep
- 58:14Speaker 2: not run into him. Any of the downhills we'd pull over,
- 58:17Speaker 2: I'd unhook and then just coast down the hill. That
- 58:19Speaker 2: makes sense, be on my own power, and so I
- 58:21Speaker 2: didn't run into him. And yeah, we made it there,
- 58:23Speaker 2: and invention we sold it for scrap. I used that
- 58:25Speaker 2: scrap money. We hopped on the ferry. We went through
- 58:27Speaker 2: the Fjords in Patagonia, which is beautiful to do that.
- 58:29Speaker 2: We did not make it to Ushwaya. We were a
- 58:31Speaker 2: couple hundred miles away. It wasn't really worth it to
- 58:33Speaker 2: go to the end of the road at that point.
- 58:34Speaker 2: I will be back maybe on a moto next time,
- 58:36Speaker 2: I hope. And then we just rented a little tiny
- 58:39Speaker 2: Volkswagen car the you know what they call it. I
- 58:41Speaker 2: don't even have it here. It's a four door Ecano
- 58:43Speaker 2: box with like, I don't know, six inch wide tires
- 58:45Speaker 2: like that. No, it's it's the same size, but four
- 58:49Speaker 2: door likes a dan And we offered the crap that thing.
- 58:53Speaker 2: It was a rental.
- 58:54Speaker 1: Every rental hazed for World drive, the most capable for
- 58:56Speaker 1: wheel drive in the world. Or rental rental, unless from
- 58:59Speaker 1: Nina Barlow, in which case please be respectful, Please please
- 59:03Speaker 1: be respectful.
- 59:03Speaker 2: Yes, but yeah, this car. So we finished the rest
- 59:06Speaker 2: of the trip. We didn't make a douche Wia, but
- 59:07Speaker 2: we did pretty much everything else. But we ended up
- 59:09Speaker 2: spending way more because we were staying in hotels. We
- 59:11Speaker 2: did have a ground tent, so we stayed in that times,
- 59:13Speaker 2: but the rest of the time we had the forum.
- 59:15Speaker 2: We're just sleeping in the back, like put air mattress
- 59:16Speaker 2: in the back in our sleeping bags and put the
- 59:18Speaker 2: seats down.
- 59:18Speaker 1: It was great.
- 59:19Speaker 2: But yeah, so that in the end it cost me
- 59:22Speaker 2: about nine nine and a half grand extra for the trip,
- 59:25Speaker 2: and it would have but it's about the same as renting.
- 59:27Speaker 2: So it sucked. But it was like, yeah, kind of washing.
- 59:31Speaker 2: But we missed a few things, like we definitely I
- 59:33Speaker 2: tried to offer it. There's a few places we just
- 59:35Speaker 2: couldn't go with that little car.
- 59:37Speaker 1: And then you were so taken with Toyota that you
- 59:40Speaker 1: bought Alexis, which is basically Toyota.
- 59:42Speaker 2: I did come back and try to buy a van,
- 59:44Speaker 2: and buying the Unicorn van that I want doesn't exist
- 59:47Speaker 2: because they're all rusted out and.
- 59:49Speaker 1: Because you always look on the East coast, this is
- 59:52Speaker 1: the problem.
- 59:53Speaker 2: That's not true, like.
- 59:55Speaker 1: Van, rusty truck, rusty yep yep correlation east coast cars.
- 1:00:00Speaker 2: No, the van wasn't an East Coast Star.
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: It was a Portland car, probably rusted from Kambuchos.
- 1:00:06Speaker 2: Minnesota car, which is the same difference worse, I know. Yeah,
- 1:00:10Speaker 2: So I looked for everywhere in the country, including Canada
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: and Mexico, and I cannot find. If anybody on this
- 1:00:15Speaker 2: podcast wants to reach out, regular body E three point
- 1:00:18Speaker 2: fifty seven to three non rusted barn.
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: Door van, if you get to make your shout out,
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: please if anybody has a V Highline venders for a
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: TJ there you go, give me a ring.
- 1:00:29Speaker 2: Need some of those.
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: I need them badly.
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: AV Highline finders Dad, he needs them.
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: There's actually somebody that you did reach out and then
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: ghosted me. Oh it was like.
- 1:00:39Speaker 2: They're gonna listen to this and reach back out.
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: You'll be okay, Please please, I'm not I'm not mad,
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: just I want to talk. I wanted to trying to
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: think about a need a Bimini for a Catalina two fifty. Yeah,
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: you just want a sailboat. I did nice. It needs
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: a bit overwatering, Yes, overwatering, because you're very, very far
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: over land, and Brian did that mental sailing adventure. You
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: guys are probably sailing individuals.
- 1:01:05Speaker 2: I've still quite a bit.
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: Yes, okay.
- 1:01:07Speaker 2: Windsurfing from Cornfields you are, yes, emerginally from Baltimore.
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: Water terrifies me straight up. I love looking at it
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: while drinking and Margarita.
- 1:01:16Speaker 2: I'm gonna get you in a white water boat.
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: It's gonna happen. Yeah, it's not gonna happen. It's gonna
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: It's like trying to get you to do something you
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: don't want. It was like trying to get one Yeah, okay,
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: it's like trying to get Brian to eat vegetables Circle
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: twenty thirteen. That would have been rough. Yeah, yeah yeah.
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: If I would have like thrown a thing of iceberg
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: lettuce at your head, it would have gotten about the
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: same response as me getting into a white water raft.
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: I got you in a white water No you didn't.
- 1:01:42Speaker 2: You chicken out at my wedding, I had white water
- 1:01:45Speaker 2: and he didn't come. Everybody else I got my parents
- 1:01:49Speaker 2: parents in a raft.
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: But at eighty year olds in the raft no Mass
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: two three.
- 1:01:54Speaker 2: But Matt and Laura did not come. They were there.
- 1:01:56Speaker 2: They hung out in the in the hotel.
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: The country in the same way that you drove across
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: the country to go to my wedding. But I hate water.
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: Oh okay, I didn't know this about you, Matt. I
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: provided water for you at my Yeah. You even did
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: a stand up pedal board out in the middle of
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: the lake.
- 1:02:12Speaker 2: I did, yeah with my suit on.
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: Yeah that was very cool. So you have a Lexus
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: GX four sixty now correct, and I think, yeah, yeah,
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: it's it's it's on Brian's shirt.
- 1:02:24Speaker 2: My sack wear shirts boom in.
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: So I think one of the cool things that you
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: did with yours is you designed your own bumper, You
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: designed your own roof rack.
- 1:02:31Speaker 2: Did I helped design the brackets for the Shieldan seats. Yeah,
- 1:02:35Speaker 2: I helped design a goose gier platforms.
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: And you loving your Selman seats because you've got lower
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: back problems. I love my shielding seats.
- 1:02:43Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: What an incredible product that is.
- 1:02:46Speaker 2: Yeah, that product is pricey in all regards, but it's
- 1:02:49Speaker 2: so worth it. Like they're just I just got back
- 1:02:52Speaker 2: from Matt's wedding and on the way back. It's a
- 1:02:53Speaker 2: long drive from tell your ride to Portland. And I
- 1:02:56Speaker 2: was going to be in the back seat with the
- 1:02:57Speaker 2: baby a bunch and working because I got the day now.
- 1:03:00Speaker 2: The wife was going to drive a bunch, but instead
- 1:03:02Speaker 2: I ended up driving most of it because I could
- 1:03:04Speaker 2: not sit in the backseat. My back was destroyed sitting
- 1:03:07Speaker 2: in the back.
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: Normal seats in the GX.
- 1:03:09Speaker 2: So the Shielman's like a little bit of heat on
- 1:03:12Speaker 2: and they're just Erganama. You tweak the little lumbar support
- 1:03:15Speaker 2: a little bit, and oh they're so good for long
- 1:03:17Speaker 2: distance roll.
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: So so what else have you done to it? Give
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: us like the give us the So I'm going to
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: say thirty second elevator speech that's under five minutes.
- 1:03:25Speaker 2: Copy forty seconds, go all right, LEXUSGS four sixty twenty thirteen.
- 1:03:30Speaker 2: I looked at it while I was trying to buy
- 1:03:31Speaker 2: a van. The vans were all rusty. I found a
- 1:03:33Speaker 2: non rusty GX. I talked you into it a little bit. Yeah,
- 1:03:37Speaker 2: at the time I.
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: Found it, didn't I totally found it. I found it
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: and sent it to you.
- 1:03:42Speaker 2: We'll go with that. We'll go with that theory.
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: Because you were looking at like land Rovers, you're going
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: to get an LR three little bit that was, And
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: I'm like, and I wouldn't. I have the distinct advantage
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: of being Brian's first help line. And I just was
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: not putting up with an LR three like I was
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: putting my foot down so hard.
- 1:03:59Speaker 2: And still buy one.
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: Just don't and you do it right, do the theory, man, No,
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: I get it, everybody, It's going to be like that.
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: It's going to be like that South South American Forerunner though.
- 1:04:11Speaker 2: One of my best rid mixed showpes has one in Portland,
- 1:04:14Speaker 2: and I get to drive it quite off.
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: You're amazing and when they wait, when they work, they're amazing.
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: When it works're amazing, They're amazing. Like twenty five hundred
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: dollars a redo. If you're not, if I'm not your
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: first call for when stuff goes wrong with your car,
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: please buy land River l R three.
- 1:04:29Speaker 2: Okay, go for it on it. I will. But I
- 1:04:31Speaker 2: bought a g X and the GX four sixty it
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: was already built by a guy in Georgia. Quite honestly,
- 1:04:36Speaker 2: all ninety five percent of the parts that were on
- 1:04:38Speaker 2: it were not up to par for my standard of quality.
- 1:04:41Speaker 2: So and I knew that the I had a lot
- 1:04:43Speaker 2: of partners in the industry at that point. After building
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: my Ram truck camper that I built a custom box
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: and lived in that for quite a while. I wanted
- 1:04:50Speaker 2: I saw an opportunity to work with a few partners,
- 1:04:52Speaker 2: and before I bought it, I reached out to them
- 1:04:54Speaker 2: and they were ready to build some parts for that platform.
- 1:04:56Speaker 2: I worked it out to help design a number of parts.
- 1:05:00Speaker 2: Signed up front bumper with trail ready. It is by
- 1:05:02Speaker 2: far the most functional and tight bumper on that car.
- 1:05:05Speaker 2: It looks real good and it's the light it's the lightest,
- 1:05:08Speaker 2: full featured one. It's got a full Winch set up, aluminum,
- 1:05:12Speaker 2: stainless and steel, so there's three but if they're all
- 1:05:16Speaker 2: in the right way to make it the lightest and
- 1:05:18Speaker 2: strongest as possible. You can't use aluminum on a like
- 1:05:20Speaker 2: a recovery point because you're just going to rip it
- 1:05:22Speaker 2: out in the front of it. So but it's got
- 1:05:23Speaker 2: swivel swivel recovery points, so soft shockles work great on it.
- 1:05:26Speaker 2: It's got a worn Winch's got Factor G five, you know,
- 1:05:29Speaker 2: link on the front of it. It's just clean and
- 1:05:32Speaker 2: works great. So I'm super happy with how that worked out.
- 1:05:35Speaker 2: It took two prototypes to get it perfect. Got integrated
- 1:05:38Speaker 2: Pea lights. Even the top bar of the grill guard
- 1:05:41Speaker 2: as an integrated light bar, and that is like the only.
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: Light it has, like a it doesn't it have like
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: a little storage box or something.
- 1:05:48Speaker 2: No storage box. It just has full access to the winch.
- 1:05:50Speaker 2: So little, that's what it is, a little hatch on
- 1:05:52Speaker 2: the top. Yeah, so most full.
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: That's the problem with most of those bumpers kids the winch.
- 1:05:56Speaker 2: Yeah, this one you can without opening the hatch. You
- 1:05:58Speaker 2: can reach your whole arm in and touch it everything.
- 1:06:00Speaker 2: And with the hatch off the top, you can see
- 1:06:02Speaker 2: the entire reel and deal with everything.
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: Cool.
- 1:06:05Speaker 2: So yeah, uncommon but needed, Yeah for sure. Actually, I'm
- 1:06:08Speaker 2: all about functionality. Like it doesn't function, then do function
- 1:06:11Speaker 2: and then make it look right. Like that car always
- 1:06:14Speaker 2: has a cleft chin look, and I tried to minimize
- 1:06:16Speaker 2: that as much as possible. It's just the body line.
- 1:06:18Speaker 2: It's really hard to make an off road bumper that
- 1:06:19Speaker 2: like looks good on that true. So but it worked
- 1:06:21Speaker 2: out really good. I'm happy with that. Did a full
- 1:06:23Speaker 2: custom roofrack with a local company in Portland that makes
- 1:06:26Speaker 2: van roofracs. The rack came out pretty good. I'm happy
- 1:06:31Speaker 2: with it. It's it's wide as lights on it for
- 1:06:34Speaker 2: me again, it's designed to carry like five kayaks and
- 1:06:37Speaker 2: our four kayaks and a TOOLI box for my skis
- 1:06:40Speaker 2: at the same time, skis and paddles and paddling gear
- 1:06:42Speaker 2: at the same time. I know it'll hold two kayaks,
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: a mountain bike and all the gear in the roof
- 1:06:48Speaker 2: on the roof.
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: Which is literally do a triathlon out of your good.
- 1:06:51Speaker 2: It is yeah, perfect, Yeah, adventure trathlon. It might be
- 1:06:54Speaker 2: next adventure actually, So yeah, that worked out great. Then
- 1:06:57Speaker 2: I worked with Goose Gear and we did a custom
- 1:06:59Speaker 2: drawer system. They already had a plate for it.
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: Yeah, that looks really good.
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a little higher and it goes over the
- 1:07:04Speaker 2: rear seats and I got a little attachment gives me
- 1:07:05Speaker 2: a sleep platform on the passenger side so I can
- 1:07:07Speaker 2: sleep one person. It's got cage on there with the
- 1:07:10Speaker 2: drop slide that Matt has an adventure imports or had
- 1:07:13Speaker 2: a few.
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: I don't know if he has any left left.
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: Yeah, So that worked out really good, and then equipped
- 1:07:18Speaker 2: it got me one of the national Luna fridges which
- 1:07:20Speaker 2: works amazing the new legacy ones. So drop fridge on
- 1:07:23Speaker 2: top of the door system, sleep next to it. What
- 1:07:25Speaker 2: else is on that thing? It's got full icon Stage
- 1:07:27Speaker 2: seven with a few tweaks for better springs and stuff
- 1:07:30Speaker 2: for suspension, so and then a dispension.
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: It's crazy on that thing.
- 1:07:33Speaker 2: It's really nice. I could drive down Death Valley like
- 1:07:36Speaker 2: crazy washboard at like seventy and I was talking to
- 1:07:39Speaker 2: you on speakerphone one time, like it's all good. And
- 1:07:41Speaker 2: then we did a body mount chop and it's got
- 1:07:43Speaker 2: thirty four's and it's got the Ebo course wheels that
- 1:07:45Speaker 2: are like won to car on the on The wheels
- 1:07:48Speaker 2: look great, love them. They're so clean. I wasn't originally
- 1:07:51Speaker 2: going to go with the bronze, but it came out
- 1:07:53Speaker 2: really good with the crazy vinyl graphics I did on
- 1:07:56Speaker 2: the trucks. So it's got customs sliders that came on
- 1:07:58Speaker 2: the truck. That's the one part that I really like
- 1:08:00Speaker 2: that I kept on there. And it still has a
- 1:08:01Speaker 2: rear bumper that I'm really not happy with. That's the
- 1:08:03Speaker 2: only part left that's like really not okay.
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: Yeah, it's like a China produ bumper.
- 1:08:07Speaker 2: It's a knockoff Kmar bumper. Let's be straight, the best
- 1:08:10Speaker 2: bumper for that truck is the Kmar. The Kmar costs
- 1:08:12Speaker 2: four times at retail what all the other competitors are.
- 1:08:15Speaker 2: It is the best, but I don't I don't know.
- 1:08:17Speaker 2: I don't have that kind of money to put into
- 1:08:19Speaker 2: a rear bumper, so I haven't haven't bought one. Yeah,
- 1:08:21Speaker 2: if you want the best by the truck style.
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: Like the Kmar scrape, but they're kind of a pain
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: to use with those latches, and I haven't really like
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: it's innovated like some of the Arab stuff, like some
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: of the AEV stuff, Like.
- 1:08:32Speaker 2: It's a better latch than the cheap knockoff ones, I'll
- 1:08:35Speaker 2: tell you that, because it holds up. The mine are
- 1:08:37Speaker 2: all wearing out from rattling on the road, so all
- 1:08:39Speaker 2: the joints are rattling off.
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: Have you looked at would a proto one fifty rear
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: door fit on your truck?
- 1:08:45Speaker 2: It would people have done that? Yeah, that would be interesting.
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: I had Matt Glass's proto door sitting in the max
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: Track sqarehouse for months. Feel bad. It was like you
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: ordered it and all the containers just like started being
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: full capacity and I'm like, sorry, dude, Product.
- 1:09:00Speaker 2: Twenty first four seventy Yeah.
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: Nice.
- 1:09:02Speaker 2: Yeah, there's a ton of cool prouto parts you can
- 1:09:04Speaker 2: put on it, and some four Runner parts you can
- 1:09:05Speaker 2: kind of sort of make work. TRAI already just made
- 1:09:08Speaker 2: a rear swing out, single swing out for the fifth
- 1:09:11Speaker 2: Gen four Runner. It might fit, I'm not sure, but
- 1:09:14Speaker 2: it looks really good. It's kind of heavy, kind of overbuilt.
- 1:09:16Speaker 2: I'm super conscious of weight, Like I really care about
- 1:09:19Speaker 2: the weight and.
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: So much do you have you weighed your truck so
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: I have.
- 1:09:22Speaker 2: I don't remember the number, but it was within one
- 1:09:24Speaker 2: hundred hundred fifty pounds of GBW with me in it,
- 1:09:28Speaker 2: fully loaded with water, fuel, food, kayak, mountain bike gear,
- 1:09:33Speaker 2: all of it, and it was just over GV like
- 1:09:35Speaker 2: one hundred pounds overget and you.
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: Had you've removed the rear the third row seats half yep,
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: that saves a lot of weight, it does. And then
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: you removed part of the rear seat.
- 1:09:45Speaker 2: No, all the rear seats are in place, even with
- 1:09:47Speaker 2: the bed platform at full time, because I want to
- 1:09:50Speaker 2: be able to quickly convert it back and be able
- 1:09:51Speaker 2: to haul people in my baby and got it?
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: Sure, Yeah, sure cool.
- 1:09:55Speaker 2: So yeah, and then Schiuman Seats and switch Pro System
- 1:09:58Speaker 2: and Mule Expision outfitters help me dial in the electrics
- 1:10:01Speaker 2: and the electrics are all like it's all shrink wrapped
- 1:10:02Speaker 2: and labeled and run appropriately. And cell phone booster from
- 1:10:06Speaker 2: we Boost and the we boosts are really good. It
- 1:10:08Speaker 2: works mine, it never works. I've heard such mixed results.
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: On it well because it's not memo right, it's like
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: trying to whatever, like whatever band it latches onto, it's
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: only bringing one in where your phone, like the new
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: iPhone will have I think it's like they call it
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: four by four where it will bring four different bands
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: in and combine them. Interesting, So it's great for voice
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: so not.
- 1:10:30Speaker 2: I find it amazing the edges of cell signal, so
- 1:10:33Speaker 2: you have to have some signal or it works not
- 1:10:34Speaker 2: at all. But when you have some signal, it boosts
- 1:10:37Speaker 2: it like double and like when I can't get out
- 1:10:41Speaker 2: of a text even all of a sudden, I can
- 1:10:42Speaker 2: make phone calls, which is huge. So yeah, I've used
- 1:10:45Speaker 2: it effectively to work on the road. It has helped me,
- 1:10:48Speaker 2: but they are expensive and it's a big crapshoot as
- 1:10:51Speaker 2: whether it's worth it. Quite honestly.
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: I think it's so situation dependent. I put one on
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: my gladiator just because where I live, I drive through
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: this dead zone, which you thought your dead zone. Yeah,
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: and it didn't do anything for that dead zone, surprising.
- 1:11:05Speaker 2: If it's dead, it's dead. You got to have something.
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: I mean, there's there's there's one or two bars, but
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: it's just like and you you put the phone right
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: on the booster, like you you actually now.
- 1:11:16Speaker 2: It's an internal antenna.
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: So I have the r V one. That's what I
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: supposed to have, the bigger antenna, But so yours is
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: the directional one then, or is usually the omni directional
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: the new omnidirectional one, omni directional one, it should be
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: omnidirectional one. Yeah, so when anti yeah, when we talked
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: to we boost. The key to it is it's you've
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: got to have your phone like on it near the antenna,
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: like it within within an inch of the antenna, really
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: within an inch of the antenna to get the maximum.
- 1:11:42Speaker 2: Because the r V one, the way it's set up
- 1:11:44Speaker 2: is as a as a another antenna on the inside
- 1:11:46Speaker 2: of the car and it's supposed to broadcast within the vehicle.
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: Yeah, you got to have it right on top of it.
- 1:11:51Speaker 2: I'm going to try this next.
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: To try to put it right on it and you'll
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: you'll actually watch the bars go up on your phone,
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: so as you pull it away, you can watch the
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: bars go down and as you know, it's working. But yeah,
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: pretty amazing. So I'm testing this mo Fi five g
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: router right now. Is that the one that Mike's gott
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: that's one. It's a five g router. I think he's
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: got the radle point one. Yeah, he loved it, so
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: he's got the credle point one. This is like the
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: These guys aren't Internet nerds or anything. This is the nerds.
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: So this is like the equivalent for my tax bracket
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: versus Mike's. It's kind of a cheaper one. Love Mike,
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: I got you.
- 1:12:28Speaker 2: We all have different levels.
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: Of We should probably wrap up here because it's a
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: bit long, so we're going to do a subsequent podcast
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: with Brian. So Brian and Scott were both just on Trek,
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: which is a kind of an athletic slash four wheel
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: drive competition that land River has always historically done, and
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: Brian won that. Brian won it, which is really cool.
- 1:12:48Speaker 2: Won the media wave. We'll put the qualifier on there.
- 1:12:51Speaker 2: But it was amazing I did with and who was
- 1:12:52Speaker 2: on your team? Who was on my team? We had
- 1:12:54Speaker 2: Jeff from Hooniverse and we had Tommy from TfL off Road.
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: Yeah, crushed it. Don't discredit yourself because the other waves
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: are used car salesman. That's not true, isn't that? It
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: was always you know, it's like it. It could be technicians,
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: or it could.
- 1:13:07Speaker 2: Be their dealers, and they always have at least one tech,
- 1:13:10Speaker 2: one front of house, in one back of house, and
- 1:13:11Speaker 2: then a third person. So there's three people from the dealership.
- 1:13:14Speaker 2: It's so there's a technician, a salesman, and somebody. I'm
- 1:13:16Speaker 2: still kind of right. They're still new cars too. I
- 1:13:19Speaker 2: worked at a Landover dealer. We'll throw that and then
- 1:13:21Speaker 2: we'll talk about that. That was my first job. Is
- 1:13:22Speaker 2: I worked for Lander River. I do want to hurt
- 1:13:24Speaker 2: that brand.
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: There's a couple questions I do like to ask, and
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: I'd love to get your insights because I know that
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: you're well read, Brian. Is there a couple of books
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: that you have found in your trap in your readings
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: really changed the course of your life, where you thought
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: about something in a different way than you had before.
- 1:13:39Speaker 2: I'm not I'm not a prolific reader at all. I
- 1:13:41Speaker 2: definitely read read a decent amount.
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: But Doctor SEUs to your Daughter doesn't count.
- 1:13:46Speaker 2: I haven't done that yet, but that's coming soon. Only
- 1:13:48Speaker 2: three months old of work. But wow, that's a tough one.
- 1:13:52Speaker 2: I can't think of one out on my head.
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: That's okay, Yeah, I don't, Harry Potter.
- 1:13:56Speaker 2: There's been some interesting marketing books that in university around
- 1:13:59Speaker 2: that time. Marketing is one of the things that always
- 1:14:01Speaker 2: is stuck with me. In high school, I was winning,
- 1:14:03Speaker 2: like without with zero studying or doing anything. I'd show
- 1:14:06Speaker 2: up at national competitions and win marketing awards. It was
- 1:14:09Speaker 2: really kind of weird. So that's actually I had no
- 1:14:11Speaker 2: clue what to do. So that's why I went to
- 1:14:12Speaker 2: college for marketing. I was like, oh, I'm good at
- 1:14:14Speaker 2: this and I don't have to do any I don't
- 1:14:15Speaker 2: have to study at all. This is perfect. I can
- 1:14:17Speaker 2: have a good college experience.
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: That's okay. You don't have to have an answer for that. Yeah,
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: that we can just cut that right out of the podcast.
- 1:14:23Speaker 2: Sorry, I don't know. I'm not I'm not educated. No, Yeah, books,
- 1:14:28Speaker 2: I mean I read a lot of adventure books.
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: Is there a venture book you like?
- 1:14:32Speaker 2: Well, so, however you want let your people go surfing,
- 1:14:35Speaker 2: that's a great onsok. Yeah, So that one's a really
- 1:14:39Speaker 2: powerful book. Whether you're in a business or not. I
- 1:14:41Speaker 2: find that one excellent one, really good. Forget the name
- 1:14:44Speaker 2: of the Cliff, the people that started Cliff kind of
- 1:14:47Speaker 2: the case study on that. It's a really good read,
- 1:14:49Speaker 2: a fun one that I don't know if you're gonna
- 1:14:51Speaker 2: learn anything from. But is the Drive the driver? So
- 1:14:54Speaker 2: the guy that Alex Royd who drove cross country? Uh,
- 1:14:57Speaker 2: they made a movie out of it. I haven't watched
- 1:14:59Speaker 2: the movie. The movies a movie Apex. It's on I
- 1:15:02Speaker 2: think it's you pay for it on YouTuber.
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: It's like a beam movie.
- 1:15:05Speaker 2: I mean it's like a documentary slash like entertainment film.
- 1:15:09Speaker 2: But about the proscot like the Cannonball run. So setting
- 1:15:12Speaker 2: the Coast to coast?
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: Is that the guy that did in the black Mercedes
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: was an M five M five Okay.
- 1:15:17Speaker 2: He's done in a lot of the heat. He currently
- 1:15:19Speaker 2: has the three wheeler record the Morgan. He did it in
- 1:15:21Speaker 2: a Morgan three wheel.
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: That's a bit obscure.
- 1:15:23Speaker 2: Yeah, but he did have the overall record in a
- 1:15:25Speaker 2: bmw M five that was fully prepared.
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: He is there when we got really drunk with him
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: in Vegas with Matt Radonicus from four by four Australia.
- 1:15:32Speaker 2: I was there for a little bit of that, him
- 1:15:33Speaker 2: and Richie Rollins.
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: I got toasted. I think I was also like twenty
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: two and in Vegas on Scott's dime.
- 1:15:39Speaker 2: So thank you Warren for the amazing booze and Cabo waba.
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: I drank so much inappropriately on this guy's tab when
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: I was working for him. I'm sorry, but what are
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: we doing right now, Matt?
- 1:15:54Speaker 2: And let's be straight, he Matt didn't drink on Scott's tab.
- 1:15:57Speaker 2: He would just be on Scott's time as an employee,
- 1:15:59Speaker 2: but he'd be drinking free booze from all the manufacturers.
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: Well, also drinking off of your poker tabs.
- 1:16:05Speaker 2: Well that came later, but yes, absolutely poker and blackjacks.
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, and on that bombshell. We're going to end this.
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: Thank you for listening to the Overlain Journal podcast with
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: Brian Door, Scott Brady, and myself Matt Scott. Stay tuned
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: for the next round of all of this and save travels,
- 1:16:23Speaker 1: save travels. Thanks for listening.
