- 1:04Speaker 2: And welcome everyone. Hope everyone is well out there. We
- 1:11Speaker 2: are back, you know, to talk about a little film
- 1:14Speaker 2: that we need to discuss, dropping very soon this weekend.
- 1:19Speaker 2: It will be out in theaters everywhere. We are talking
- 1:22Speaker 2: about Avatar, Fire and Ash. Let me be specific, because
- 1:27Speaker 2: we're now talking about Avatar the Last Airbender. No, no,
- 1:31Speaker 2: unfortunately not we are talking about James Cameron.
- 1:35Speaker 1: Third third right, the third.
- 1:38Speaker 2: Third, the third in the Avatar, who knows what it'll be, quastlogy, quintology.
- 1:46Speaker 3: Listen right now, it's a trilogy.
- 1:49Speaker 1: It feels like it's longer than it's gone on. So
- 1:54Speaker 1: this is the third and they're five planned on paper
- 1:57Speaker 1: right now. Yeah, the first started in two thousand and nine.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Yeah, it's been going on longer than any relationship I've
- 2:03Speaker 2: ever had.
- 2:04Speaker 1: It's been a while. So to hold on is it's
- 2:08Speaker 1: kind of like to hold on to this idea and
- 2:10Speaker 1: to keep it going. It's like, is that commendable or
- 2:14Speaker 1: is the man out of his mind?
- 2:16Speaker 2: I mean the money is not you know that part? Yeah,
- 2:19Speaker 2: that part is there, So he's definitely not out of
- 2:21Speaker 2: his mind for that. Because remember, he invested himself into this,
- 2:25Speaker 2: his own money, so he is caking up off the rewards.
- 2:29Speaker 3: So that part is.
- 2:30Speaker 1: He does he have like a really good like back
- 2:32Speaker 1: end deal on this, but.
- 2:34Speaker 3: Not even a back end deal.
- 2:35Speaker 2: It's like at one point, I know, he invested his
- 2:38Speaker 2: own millions, so it's like his own money is winning
- 2:41Speaker 2: to the production, so he is caking okay.
- 2:45Speaker 1: And it's owned by Twentieth Century Studios and light Storm
- 2:47Speaker 1: Entertainment I'm gonna guess lightstorming teament he has something to
- 2:52Speaker 1: do with that.
- 2:52Speaker 2: Okay, Yeah, I'm.
- 2:53Speaker 3: Pretty sure that's all him.
- 2:54Speaker 2: And he definitely keeps putting the money back into it.
- 2:58Speaker 2: So it's one of those things where you know he's
- 3:01Speaker 2: still running the risk right now, but you know every
- 3:04Speaker 2: time it's been coming back coming up gold for him.
- 3:07Speaker 1: Yeah. So, Ben, what are your overall thoughts about Avatar
- 3:12Speaker 1: fire and ash Well, put my.
- 3:14Speaker 2: Overall thoughts about Avatar fire and actual pretty much be
- 3:17Speaker 2: my overall thoughts about Avatar as an Avatar universe, which
- 3:23Speaker 2: are have been diminishing returns. Let's say that, I think
- 3:28Speaker 2: that's the best way to describe it, is diminishing returns, because,
- 3:31Speaker 2: as you said in two thousand and nine, Man, I
- 3:34Speaker 2: will never forget being in the theater to watch the
- 3:37Speaker 2: first Avatar.
- 3:39Speaker 3: I was down in Washington, d C.
- 3:41Speaker 2: I was in a giant theater, and I think I
- 3:44Speaker 2: was like, no, I not think. I know I was
- 3:46Speaker 2: off to the left side of the theater because at
- 3:50Speaker 2: one point I looked towards the right of the theater
- 3:52Speaker 2: and we were somewhere on Pandora and there were all
- 3:58Speaker 2: those little things floating in the air and you could
- 4:01Speaker 2: see them floating in the theater. And the three D yeah,
- 4:04Speaker 2: the three D four D D effect, and it was
- 4:08Speaker 2: the best three D that I've ever seen since I've
- 4:10Speaker 2: been at disney World as a child. At disney World
- 4:14Speaker 2: they had this Muppets three D. For anyone who's been
- 4:16Speaker 2: to disney World and got to see it, it was
- 4:19Speaker 2: years ahead of its time. Like Disney World was just
- 4:21Speaker 2: so far ahead of the game when it came to
- 4:23Speaker 2: three D because they had that, and they had Tappedain
- 4:25Speaker 2: EO to Michael Jackson joint and both of those were
- 4:29Speaker 2: just banging on anything. Muppets three D banged on anything
- 4:32Speaker 2: I've ever seen, like the three D into that was
- 4:35Speaker 2: up until Avatar. And then I saw Avatar and I'm like, oh, yes,
- 4:38Speaker 2: just that feeling again. And I'm a grown person by
- 4:40Speaker 2: that point, and it's incredible. And then the second one,
- 4:45Speaker 2: and I remember I saw this first one twice and
- 4:48Speaker 2: I wish I could see it multiple times. I was
- 4:49Speaker 2: just like, yo, I wish I could just turn off
- 4:51Speaker 2: the audio and watch it in the theater because you know,
- 4:54Speaker 2: this movie's tear off the dialogue.
- 4:56Speaker 3: Yeah, the dialogue and the.
- 4:58Speaker 2: Whole storyline is especially the first one I thought was terrible,
- 5:03Speaker 2: and that's saying something because we'll get to that in
- 5:06Speaker 2: the second. Then the second one I just thought was
- 5:09Speaker 2: more the same as far as dialogue and story, ridiculous
- 5:13Speaker 2: and not that good, introduced a lot of characters who
- 5:17Speaker 2: continued on and the three that I really don't care for,
- 5:19Speaker 2: And we'll get in the more of that. But my
- 5:21Speaker 2: big Parliament two was the frame rate, because that's when
- 5:24Speaker 2: Carmerton decided to experiment with it and started doing different
- 5:29Speaker 2: frame rates in the same scenes sometimes so at some point.
- 5:33Speaker 1: Also changing the ratio as well. That's a movie where
- 5:37Speaker 1: he kept changing the aspect ratio.
- 5:39Speaker 3: No, that's more.
- 5:40Speaker 2: You know, aspect ratio is more recent, I mean not recent,
- 5:43Speaker 2: but people have been doing more for it lately in
- 5:45Speaker 2: the last couple of years, for like Centers And yeah, so.
- 5:48Speaker 1: I know what you're saying about frame. I'm saying, didn't
- 5:50Speaker 1: he also changed?
- 5:52Speaker 3: You know? He might have?
- 5:53Speaker 2: He might have, because I just remember when I saw
- 5:56Speaker 2: it in the theater, I was this disriented because I
- 5:59Speaker 2: couldn't believe what was doing on because it was like
- 6:01Speaker 2: some seemed to be in sixty where it looks like
- 6:05Speaker 2: what I called the soap opera effect where it just
- 6:07Speaker 2: a looks like you're looking through the window at something.
- 6:09Speaker 2: But this is also a completely unrealistic world with multiple
- 6:13Speaker 2: characters who are cgi rendered, so it.
- 6:15Speaker 3: Just looked crazy to me.
- 6:17Speaker 2: And then it'd be sixty, and then it'd be twenty four,
- 6:19Speaker 2: which is traditional film where it looks like film and
- 6:22Speaker 2: it feels like a film world, and then thirty, which
- 6:26Speaker 2: is almost there but also more video like. So between
- 6:31Speaker 2: those three different frame rates, it just looked crazy. I
- 6:34Speaker 2: never wanted to see two again. I was horrified by
- 6:37Speaker 2: in fact, I just did not. I thought the ham
- 6:39Speaker 2: Rad had lost his bond in fact pretty much, and
- 6:42Speaker 2: in three I was fearful of it. I not read anything,
- 6:45Speaker 2: I didn't listen to anything. I didn't know what he
- 6:47Speaker 2: was doing, frame rates, anything, But I would say this
- 6:50Speaker 2: off top, it looked incredible to me, like this might
- 6:53Speaker 2: be the best looking one of all of them.
- 6:56Speaker 3: The three D effect is not working for me like
- 6:59Speaker 3: it used to.
- 6:59Speaker 2: I don't know if he really cares or even attempts
- 7:02Speaker 2: to do it like he used to, because it's just
- 7:04Speaker 2: not there. But as far as just the actual visual
- 7:07Speaker 2: of the film and the visuals are the characters and
- 7:10Speaker 2: navies everybody stunning. I mean, some of the best stuff
- 7:16Speaker 2: I've seen on facial rendering since like Gollumn. You know,
- 7:22Speaker 2: just I don't want to say ostra worthy, but definitely
- 7:25Speaker 2: worthy of attention, you know, definitely worthy of nominations at
- 7:28Speaker 2: the very least. The work they do on Una Chaplin,
- 7:33Speaker 2: who plays Vaarrain Vahrain. I think the main feelain of
- 7:39Speaker 2: the film incredible. Every time that characters on spring away,
- 7:43Speaker 2: their face emotes, the where their eyes shine just absolutely firework. Yeah,
- 7:50Speaker 2: I mean it looked really good. Beautiful gowns.
- 7:53Speaker 1: Okay, overall thoughts for me about Avatar, Fire and Ash,
- 8:00Speaker 1: James Cameron will always triumph in the technical category from
- 8:06Speaker 1: a technical and when I say technical, we're talking about
- 8:08Speaker 1: special effects, lighting, visual direction, maybe not narrative direction, but
- 8:14Speaker 1: visual direction, character design, costume design, stuff like that stuff
- 8:22Speaker 1: that goal that builds up the fabric of a universe
- 8:27Speaker 1: within Avatar. All that stuff phenomenal And if you're going there,
- 8:32Speaker 1: as ben Iman mentioned, for the beautiful gowns, you're going
- 8:35Speaker 1: to be thrilled. I mean from a just absolutely incredible.
- 8:40Speaker 1: It is also partly why you have that fatigue. And
- 8:45Speaker 1: I also had the fatigue of it being in three D.
- 8:48Speaker 1: In fact, when I walked into the theater, I thought
- 8:51Speaker 1: it was a regular showing and they was like, oh,
- 8:53Speaker 1: here's your three D glasses and I said, audibly, ill
- 8:55Speaker 1: this in three D and then someone heard me start laughing.
- 8:59Speaker 1: But and it was because one, like, as a glasses wear,
- 9:02Speaker 1: I hate that shit. And two it doesn't do it
- 9:05Speaker 1: for me anymore like it really did. And again, we're
- 9:08Speaker 1: talking about a universe that started back in two thousand
- 9:11Speaker 1: and nine and at the time, and I'm not saying
- 9:13Speaker 1: that it still doesn't look revolutionary. It still looks revolutionary.
- 9:15Speaker 1: But he was doing this PS five graphics level shit
- 9:19Speaker 1: back in two thousand and nine, and so I expect
- 9:23Speaker 1: this every fucking time I walk into an Avatar film.
- 9:25Speaker 1: I expect no greater, no less than the best system
- 9:31Speaker 1: you can get ten years down the road, like I
- 9:33Speaker 1: expect this. So I already knew it was gonna look flawless,
- 9:36Speaker 1: and it did. I'm glad you mentioned the mocap, the
- 9:38Speaker 1: mocap from that perspective, the facial acting, all that stuff,
- 9:44Speaker 1: because again this is also these people are it's like
- 9:48Speaker 1: body and voice acting, right, so cause it's not the
- 9:50Speaker 1: actual people, right, but it's their likenesses and they're actually
- 9:53Speaker 1: in there in the space being filmed. So the physical
- 9:57Speaker 1: stuff on point. For me, that's where the triumph stops
- 10:04Speaker 1: and the tragedy begins.
- 10:06Speaker 2: Hold on, let's let's not get to the tragedy just yet,
- 10:10Speaker 2: because I do want to say, there was you know,
- 10:13Speaker 2: a bit more.
- 10:15Speaker 3: Try.
- 10:16Speaker 1: I gave it a lot like this is some this
- 10:18Speaker 1: stuff that you will never deny on an Avatar film,
- 10:22Speaker 1: and the rest I'm like, what is the stickiest of
- 10:25Speaker 1: the ichy you are on.
- 10:26Speaker 3: My guy m dollar dollar billion.
- 10:32Speaker 1: Earth cash money.
- 10:37Speaker 2: Cash home because the choice cash choices were made. But
- 10:41Speaker 2: we'll get to that. I do want to say before
- 10:45Speaker 2: our screening. Before the film actually begun begins, James Cameron
- 10:49Speaker 2: comes on to introduce the film and says, no AI
- 10:53Speaker 2: was using the making of God and I knew that.
- 10:56Speaker 3: I knew that, which I was, you know, but still
- 10:58Speaker 3: very dope.
- 10:59Speaker 2: But at the same time, they also show the actors
- 11:01Speaker 2: doing their performance work and the moke cap work that
- 11:06Speaker 2: went into it. I hope y'all do not see that,
- 11:09Speaker 2: because I was busted out laughing at a lot of it,
- 11:13Speaker 2: and then when I actually saw those same scenes. I
- 11:16Speaker 2: felt them, some of them much more than I would have,
- 11:23Speaker 2: you know, well then I did when I saw them
- 11:25Speaker 2: performing them, you know, without the moke cap done, without
- 11:28Speaker 2: the CGI everything that was unnecessary for me. That's something
- 11:32Speaker 2: I need to see later on, but not before I
- 11:34Speaker 2: see the film, so hopefully they do not do that
- 11:36Speaker 2: to y'all.
- 11:38Speaker 3: I really did enjoy.
- 11:40Speaker 2: Una Chaplain as Vrain, not just for the mo cap
- 11:45Speaker 2: work done, but I truly thoroughly enjoyed her character.
- 11:50Speaker 3: I don't understand if.
- 11:52Speaker 2: I really get what Cameron is trying to say with
- 11:57Speaker 2: their character and with the fired plan of the Navvy,
- 12:02Speaker 2: because previously Cameron has said that all Navvy are you know,
- 12:07Speaker 2: living balance with their world with Pandora and are good
- 12:12Speaker 2: people basically, and then he also said that he wanted
- 12:16Speaker 2: to introduce these versions of the Navvi because people see
- 12:19Speaker 2: it's always been humans versus Navvy, and he wanted to
- 12:22Speaker 2: show that, you know, they were bad.
- 12:24Speaker 3: Navvy too, which feels.
- 12:27Speaker 2: Kind of both siding things, you know, and yeah, I
- 12:33Speaker 2: just I really don't like that as much, you know,
- 12:37Speaker 2: and but I do a It's like, you know, I
- 12:42Speaker 2: love and hate everything about this character, right because her
- 12:45Speaker 2: motive their motivation is flimsy then, and I mean the
- 12:49Speaker 2: flimsiest of the flimsy, but I also love it. They
- 12:52Speaker 2: you know, have been hurt and so they want to
- 12:55Speaker 2: hurt other people. That's pretty much their whole motivation.
- 12:59Speaker 1: It's three characters I like in this film, and Vrange
- 13:03Speaker 1: being one of them because new character, and it was
- 13:06Speaker 1: it was well performed, and I want to be very
- 13:09Speaker 1: clear there's an actor too, but and I'll explain as
- 13:12Speaker 1: we go along, but there's a difference between acting and performing,
- 13:15Speaker 1: at least for me, and I'll give more content. But
- 13:19Speaker 1: the performance and acting for Vrang was cool. The tiri
- 13:23Speaker 1: again that you know, Zoey's SOUTHDNA, she did her things,
- 13:26Speaker 1: she's she's the face of the franchise. On point. And
- 13:29Speaker 1: then Korch Yes, he awed your favorite just for comedy
- 13:34Speaker 1: reasons alone. Yes, pure comedy. That's that's my that's my dude.
- 13:41Speaker 1: After that, the tragedy begins for me. So if you
- 13:45Speaker 1: until unless you say otherwise, I'm going to begin into.
- 13:47Speaker 2: The tragedy trying to think there's any more than I
- 13:51Speaker 2: really enjoyed.
- 13:52Speaker 3: Like I said, it looked amazing.
- 13:54Speaker 1: Oh okay, So so I was just trying to do
- 13:58Speaker 1: overall thoughts. But you want to start with the good. Fine,
- 14:01Speaker 1: the action scene, fighting scenes, fire. I messed with it.
- 14:08Speaker 1: There was a lot of There was enough brutalness. There
- 14:10Speaker 1: wasn't like wild blood or nothing like that. It wasn't
- 14:13Speaker 1: nothing crazy coming happening where you saw like not retails
- 14:17Speaker 1: being twisted up and Nigga's arms being going to three sixty.
- 14:20Speaker 1: You ain't seen nothing crazy like that. But like, there
- 14:23Speaker 1: was fighting and there was chaos, and I keep HARKing
- 14:28Speaker 1: back to PS five game. It was just like rendering
- 14:32Speaker 1: as many characters as possible on screen at once, all
- 14:35Speaker 1: fighting like an MMO, and we were We watched it
- 14:40Speaker 1: on a big Dolby screen. It's one of those things
- 14:43Speaker 1: where it's the bigger the screen you get the better
- 14:45Speaker 1: because then you can really just see how expansive, as mentioned,
- 14:48Speaker 1: the fighting, the world, all that stuff is. Again, the
- 14:51Speaker 1: way it looked incredible. I was into when it was
- 14:55Speaker 1: the action stuff, I was really into it. I was like, oh,
- 14:57Speaker 1: and because of that, I felt it was a better
- 15:00Speaker 1: film than a second one. The second one was very
- 15:02Speaker 1: slow to me, disjointed and funny for.
- 15:05Speaker 3: All the wrong reasons, all the wrong reasons.
- 15:09Speaker 1: Yes, and this wasn't wasn't necessarily funny for wrong reason.
- 15:12Speaker 1: It was funny maybe when it wasn't supposed to be.
- 15:14Speaker 1: But it wasn't as egregious as the second one. I'll
- 15:18Speaker 1: say that, like the second one was terrible, this one,
- 15:22Speaker 1: this one you'll get into. And I will say, and
- 15:24Speaker 1: this to me, this is a plus. If you don't
- 15:26Speaker 1: remember nothing about Avatar, you never see nothing about Avatar.
- 15:29Speaker 1: You don't need no backstory. You come in there and
- 15:34Speaker 1: you good because when I tell you, boy, I remember that, well,
- 15:38Speaker 1: I remember up here and there, but I basically didn't
- 15:41Speaker 1: remember what happened the last thing because it was so bad.
- 15:44Speaker 1: And I remember the certain characters and light narrative about
- 15:49Speaker 1: and that's all. If you got that, you good. If
- 15:51Speaker 1: you got nothing, you're still good.
- 15:54Speaker 3: Us good nav.
- 15:56Speaker 1: So supified.
- 15:58Speaker 2: Is that that's a positive some points and negative and
- 16:04Speaker 2: others because if you have seen the first two, this
- 16:08Speaker 2: is the greatest hits of the first two. Yes, egregious
- 16:12Speaker 2: in its first Well, no, this is not yet. That's
- 16:16Speaker 2: that is a tragedy that we'll get to. But it's
- 16:18Speaker 2: just egregious because it's not like there's ten of these films.
- 16:22Speaker 2: You know, there's only three. They're already like, here's the
- 16:26Speaker 2: first two again, but we'll get to that.
- 16:30Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 16:30Speaker 2: I enjoyed those same characters that you did for pretty
- 16:33Speaker 2: much the same reasons that you did.
- 16:36Speaker 1: So let's move on then keep the show going.
- 16:39Speaker 2: Tragedy, I okay, And that is my biggest tragedy is
- 16:44Speaker 2: that this film is a greatest hits of the first
- 16:47Speaker 2: two films with the added I guess bonus of there
- 16:52Speaker 2: being evil Navvy now, and weren't there evil Navy in
- 16:55Speaker 2: the first one because Navy teamed up with the humans
- 16:58Speaker 2: at some point, didn't they?
- 17:00Speaker 3: I can't.
- 17:01Speaker 1: There's no thing as good or evil, Ben. It's hurt
- 17:04Speaker 1: people or hurt Nave and unhurt true, hurt Navi, hurt
- 17:09Speaker 1: other Navi.
- 17:10Speaker 2: But these nove but the first nove we know were
- 17:13Speaker 2: hurt too, and they didn't turn on the other Navi.
- 17:16Speaker 2: So that's and there, and there's a I mean, all right, look,
- 17:20Speaker 2: let's just get it out the way. James Tamman has
- 17:23Speaker 2: a huge James Tammer doesn't like people. No, James Tammand
- 17:27Speaker 2: does have a huge problem with indigenous culture, with representation,
- 17:34Speaker 2: with ideas around these things. Because as I'm sitting there
- 17:41Speaker 2: watching Avatar Fire and Ash, I'm like, yo, he's really
- 17:46Speaker 2: portraying these evil Navvy as some savages, you know, just
- 17:49Speaker 2: as a you know type of thing. And I'm like, oh,
- 17:54Speaker 2: that's you know ingregious James, Like, but it just he hasn't. Yeah.
- 18:03Speaker 3: Yeah, But by simplifying.
- 18:05Speaker 2: It, you're leaning into a lot of stereotypes, a lot
- 18:09Speaker 2: of bad imagery that's been used throughout ages. And that's
- 18:14Speaker 2: like my other problem issue question with this whole thing
- 18:19Speaker 2: ever since the second one?
- 18:20Speaker 3: Is it.
- 18:23Speaker 2: Racist to have a white character with dreadlocks be called
- 18:27Speaker 2: monkey boy?
- 18:29Speaker 1: No, it's funny as fuck. Actually, it's comedy. Actually I
- 18:35Speaker 1: noticed your comedy. Shout out to Jack Champion, who plays
- 18:40Speaker 1: Miles Spider Scoro, shout out to you because you holding
- 18:47Speaker 1: at l with the best of them. I love it.
- 18:50Speaker 3: Mean, wait, we gotta.
- 18:51Speaker 2: Stay on this second because it's I know, it's not racist,
- 18:57Speaker 2: but it is hilarious. And it's also just like, why
- 19:03Speaker 2: a monkey?
- 19:03Speaker 1: What's the problem? I ain't call him that? To call
- 19:08Speaker 1: him that his own brother's and sisters calling that was problem.
- 19:11Speaker 2: I mean, at one point in the SHIWM, I turned
- 19:13Speaker 2: to Tatiana like because they I knew they called him
- 19:17Speaker 2: monkey boy. I remember in our review of the last one,
- 19:19Speaker 2: I was probably harping on this, but it's just the
- 19:23Speaker 2: fact of the matter is, at one point his adopted
- 19:26Speaker 2: sister is calling out for him in anguish because she
- 19:30Speaker 2: is quite worried about his life, and she says monkey boy,
- 19:35Speaker 2: and it just it doesn't really work. You know, it'd
- 19:39Speaker 2: be like, if you call me monkey boy in a
- 19:42Speaker 2: you know, moment of fear, I don't think I would
- 19:46Speaker 2: feel your concern.
- 19:48Speaker 1: That's her nickname for him, Listen.
- 19:51Speaker 3: That's the other thing, his nick that his NAVI name is.
- 19:55Speaker 1: Spider, which is fine.
- 19:59Speaker 3: Why I guess look at his body.
- 20:02Speaker 1: Look the nigga moves like Amy or a spider.
- 20:06Speaker 3: Like I'm saying, okay, these are supposed to.
- 20:08Speaker 1: It too literal for you?
- 20:11Speaker 3: Is this is?
- 20:11Speaker 1: This is this rip off of you know, colonialism, imperialism
- 20:16Speaker 1: and everything matched together because a man is misguided and wayward.
- 20:22Speaker 3: Supposed to black in the hood.
- 20:24Speaker 2: Are they just supposed to be like the disrespectful people
- 20:26Speaker 2: who call you snot boy. You know, when you walk
- 20:28Speaker 2: out one day and your nose is running for the
- 20:31Speaker 2: rest of your life.
- 20:32Speaker 1: This is a white man's reimagination of.
- 20:36Speaker 3: Black people the hood. So that's what I'm saying.
- 20:38Speaker 1: No, I was gonna say indigenous cultures, because he stole damn.
- 20:42Speaker 2: Near everything everything from something.
- 20:44Speaker 1: From that, from the from the And I understand, you're
- 20:47Speaker 1: trying to make it like it's another world, and you're
- 20:49Speaker 1: trying to make allegory and and parallels and all the
- 20:54Speaker 1: literary terms. But it's just like, bruh, you a white
- 20:58Speaker 1: man trying to do this, and it and it hums
- 21:00Speaker 1: off as a white man trying to do this.
- 21:02Speaker 3: But that's what I'm saying.
- 21:02Speaker 2: Why do they disrespect this poor boy by calling him monkeys?
- 21:06Speaker 1: It's not disrespect, bro, It's it's it's it's it's a
- 21:07Speaker 1: love language. So let me get to what I wanted
- 21:09Speaker 1: to say, which was Avatar. Their original is Pokemon Red
- 21:14Speaker 1: Avatar The Way of the Water. It's Pokemon Blue and
- 21:16Speaker 1: Avatar fire and ashes Pokemon yellow. And for anyone, particularly
- 21:20Speaker 1: the millennials or anybody else who's ever played that, you'll
- 21:22Speaker 1: understand red and blue. You know you got that's when
- 21:25Speaker 1: you got into the world of Pokemon. You learned about it.
- 21:27Speaker 1: You had different things happening in both games. Yama was
- 21:30Speaker 1: just the same game over again. You get to play
- 21:32Speaker 1: let's pick at you. That was Fire and Ash, same
- 21:36Speaker 1: fucking movie, same same movie from the other first two
- 21:39Speaker 1: put together a you gotta pick at you now, funck
- 21:41Speaker 1: sh it up like that's and that's what I said.
- 21:45Speaker 1: If you were Aftar, fan's not necessarily a bad thing.
- 21:48Speaker 1: If you again as me like you, just as you
- 21:50Speaker 1: watched you, you were Ben, I mean even said Ben said,
- 21:53Speaker 1: didn't I see this shit before?
- 21:55Speaker 3: Yes?
- 21:57Speaker 1: Far for bar, there were certain ideas and decisions made
- 22:02Speaker 1: where I'm like, nigga, you did that twenty years ago.
- 22:06Speaker 2: Yes, exactly, and it made no sense twenty years ago.
- 22:12Speaker 3: It doesn't have make sense now.
- 22:14Speaker 2: Having the big bird does not make you a tough guy.
- 22:19Speaker 3: But a character saying, I didn't sign.
- 22:24Speaker 1: On for this, Oh listen, listen. The human race has
- 22:29Speaker 1: gone trillions of like trillions and trillions of light years
- 22:34Speaker 1: away to colonize the planet. And one of the characters
- 22:39Speaker 1: that he should prefer to actually said because he realizes, oh,
- 22:43Speaker 1: they're they're doing bad things to the indigenous people here,
- 22:46Speaker 1: and he goes, I didn't sign up for this, my nigga.
- 22:49Speaker 1: You jumped in a starship wanted to cryo, sleepy whatever,
- 22:53Speaker 1: How long.
- 22:54Speaker 2: To fuck your life on Earth forever because you'll never
- 22:57Speaker 2: see those people.
- 22:58Speaker 1: What was the They didn't lie to you. They said
- 23:00Speaker 1: we coming to whear the oil at and we're taking
- 23:03Speaker 1: it over. They told you, And we need a marine
- 23:06Speaker 1: biologist to explain what these animals do over here. You
- 23:10Speaker 1: know what you signed up for. You ain't signed up
- 23:12Speaker 1: to go exploring. This ain't star trek Man. You know
- 23:14Speaker 1: what this was? No, but you know, but you're feeling bad.
- 23:19Speaker 1: My Nigga's too late, you hear now? No I'm not.
- 23:21Speaker 1: I say it's too late. It's never too late to
- 23:23Speaker 1: change and do good. But my god, don't be stupid.
- 23:26Speaker 3: That was a bad time to do it again.
- 23:28Speaker 2: Going back to your example of Pokemon Yellow, it's like,
- 23:32Speaker 2: if I swear to god that character happened in the
- 23:36Speaker 2: last film, because you know, they were doing this to
- 23:40Speaker 2: the whales in the last film, and I remember a
- 23:42Speaker 2: character being like, oh no, we should have been doing
- 23:44Speaker 2: this to the whales, and then he got killed. This time,
- 23:48Speaker 2: the character just vanishes into the ether. But it's it's.
- 23:55Speaker 1: If you want the background, watch the first two movies
- 23:57Speaker 1: and you'll know exactly what you're getting into.
- 23:59Speaker 2: But if't, it's probably better.
- 24:02Speaker 1: It's like Sonic one and Sonic two, and then Sonic
- 24:05Speaker 1: and Knuckles, and then you put the cartries on top
- 24:07Speaker 1: of the other cartridge and that's what you get. With
- 24:10Speaker 1: Fire and Ash, you get the same levels, but with Knuckles.
- 24:14Speaker 2: There is this really great X Men story from back
- 24:17Speaker 2: in the day when wolf Reine is like first in
- 24:20Speaker 2: the know the X Men. He's on the team, and
- 24:23Speaker 2: they run into Alpha Flight, right, another super team who
- 24:26Speaker 2: Wolverine used to be a member of, so Alfa Light
- 24:29Speaker 2: had their own comic book, right, and they were both
- 24:32Speaker 2: written and drawn by John Byrne, both of them. You know,
- 24:34Speaker 2: I think Chris Claremont was writing X Men, but John
- 24:37Speaker 2: was drawing it. John was writing and drawn EDGMN. So
- 24:40Speaker 2: you can get an issue of X Men that comes
- 24:43Speaker 2: from the X Men's perspective, or you can get one
- 24:45Speaker 2: from Alpha Flight and it's the same story but.
- 24:49Speaker 4: From the different perspective, and it's but it's still there's
- 24:53Speaker 4: a lot of reuse of paddles, That's what I mean.
- 24:58Speaker 2: So that was this is the same thing, because like
- 25:01Speaker 2: you said, there were there were shots where I'm like, yo, fam,
- 25:05Speaker 2: did you reuse that from the last one or the
- 25:07Speaker 2: first one.
- 25:08Speaker 1: Because that was that y'all did before. And I'm like, nigga,
- 25:12Speaker 1: they got y'all and back in two thousand and nine
- 25:14Speaker 1: with the same move, how y'all get got again year later.
- 25:20Speaker 2: Weapon got dow ungraded in this one. Like they didn't
- 25:23Speaker 2: even have the humans they yeah, remember.
- 25:26Speaker 1: They had it was the same ship.
- 25:29Speaker 2: Remember they had the big mechs that Courts got killed in.
- 25:33Speaker 2: They still those, they had them little Surety had that
- 25:36Speaker 2: little joint that was in it.
- 25:37Speaker 1: But those were just exo suits. They still had like
- 25:40Speaker 1: the little crab mech and the giant fucking u you know, planes,
- 25:45Speaker 1: stark industry ships and ship like that like that, and
- 25:48Speaker 1: then and then you know, they had plenty And I
- 25:50Speaker 1: will say that, you know, just in terms of like
- 25:51Speaker 1: going back to stuff that was positive if you and
- 25:55Speaker 1: I guess that's still also along the lines of the
- 25:57Speaker 1: special effects, if you like machinery and imagination in that way.
- 26:02Speaker 1: And it's not exactly that imagine because you've seen it
- 26:04Speaker 1: in anime, but imaginative enough where it didn't look all
- 26:09Speaker 1: crunchy on screen, like it looked pretty generally fluid, like
- 26:12Speaker 1: people in exosuits going underwater, above water, in the air
- 26:15Speaker 1: like all that. That that that was good. They did
- 26:19Speaker 1: that well, you know, just in terms of machines of
- 26:21Speaker 1: war and shit like that. That was great. That was great.
- 26:28Speaker 1: That was great. Uh, weaponry from the human side, weaponry
- 26:31Speaker 1: from the not V side, regards of which NAVI, it
- 26:34Speaker 1: was like, that was amazing. They That's why I said,
- 26:37Speaker 1: I really actually really did enjoy the action scenes, like
- 26:40Speaker 1: I really think, like on a large format action sequence
- 26:46Speaker 1: like he killed on that great.
- 26:47Speaker 2: I wasn't like blown away by the actual action, but
- 26:50Speaker 2: just everything looked incredible, even during thatch and that I'll
- 26:55Speaker 2: give them, Okay, yeah, the explosions, all that fire and
- 26:59Speaker 2: that looked even in the peaceful stuff like. That's what
- 27:02Speaker 2: I really was impressed by because like the last time,
- 27:05Speaker 2: because of the frame rate stuff, I could appreciate them
- 27:07Speaker 2: whales none of that all that should insane to me.
- 27:10Speaker 2: This time the underwater scenes with the whales and all
- 27:14Speaker 2: that look.
- 27:14Speaker 1: Yeah. Again, if you want just a visual feesh, you
- 27:18Speaker 1: got it. They want the.
- 27:21Speaker 3: Home where I can turn the volume off.
- 27:23Speaker 1: They won on this, uh, And then that's great and then.
- 27:27Speaker 3: You go into the plot horrific.
- 27:31Speaker 1: Again. It is a combination of the first two. So
- 27:33Speaker 1: it's essentially the same things happening again. You know, human meats,
- 27:38Speaker 1: not me, but then just adding knuckles slash, speak at
- 27:41Speaker 1: you with the with the ash, and you got you
- 27:47Speaker 1: got a game, right, you got? You got a new level.
- 27:52Speaker 1: It's the same ship.
- 27:52Speaker 3: It's like basically a DLC for the first two.
- 27:55Speaker 1: It's it's the and the problem why the plot is
- 28:00Speaker 1: so horrendous is because again it's stilized on the trophy colonistic,
- 28:08Speaker 1: imperialistic humans come to destroy.
- 28:10Speaker 3: Everything Cowboys versus India.
- 28:12Speaker 1: And it's like you would think as long as the
- 28:16Speaker 1: human's been there, because time has passed on Pandora, you
- 28:19Speaker 1: would think they would nothing said that they would all
- 28:21Speaker 1: of a sudden grow a conscience, but you would think
- 28:23Speaker 1: they would maybe do things differently.
- 28:24Speaker 2: No.
- 28:25Speaker 1: No, all of the characters from the human side, majority
- 28:29Speaker 1: of the ninety eight point four percent of them one
- 28:33Speaker 1: hundred No, because there's the marine biologists. I'll go to
- 28:37Speaker 1: ninety nine percent saying somebody flips. There's always a dude
- 28:40Speaker 1: who flips, you know, he's nine of them are flat
- 28:48Speaker 1: flat and there's no growth, there's no learning, there's just
- 28:52Speaker 1: I'm here to colonize the planet. It's and it's not
- 28:56Speaker 1: even done in a way that's like a smart satire, right,
- 29:01Speaker 1: like a Shasha Troopers, like oh, we're all in this
- 29:04Speaker 1: together as a like, it's it's not even funny in
- 29:07Speaker 1: the way. It's like they're dead ass. They're Edie Falco
- 29:10Speaker 1: as the general, just flat and I want you to
- 29:15Speaker 1: destroy the planet, you know, just just walking around like
- 29:20Speaker 1: a fucking robot. And everyone is the same way. I
- 29:23Speaker 1: want to destroy all the whales and get their blubber
- 29:25Speaker 1: la la la around like I just it's the same
- 29:30Speaker 1: bullshit and it's so and it's not even like entertaining bullshit.
- 29:35Speaker 1: It's just like God, That's why the only quote bad
- 29:37Speaker 1: guy that I like is Quoritch, because not to say
- 29:41Speaker 1: that he grows. This man don't learn a fucking thing.
- 29:43Speaker 1: He just gets worse. But at least he's doing it
- 29:46Speaker 1: differently and he is funny and he's saying crazy shit
- 29:50Speaker 1: through it. And that's one thing. If you go for
- 29:52Speaker 1: no other dialogue or narrative, go for the narrative Quortch. Yes,
- 29:55Speaker 1: this man, the stuff he says that come out of
- 29:58Speaker 1: this man mouth, some of it's just going off funny
- 30:01Speaker 1: stuff right, and some of it was like, is this
- 30:02Speaker 1: nigga crazy? Like he's just saying things because and he can.
- 30:06Speaker 1: And he's the only one who seems to realize I
- 30:08Speaker 1: have autonomy. I don't have to be a murder that
- 30:12Speaker 1: killed homicide killing wall Robot like the rest of the humans.
- 30:14Speaker 1: Like he's like, I'm gonna do that, but with style,
- 30:17Speaker 1: And that's why I mess with him. Everyone else they
- 30:19Speaker 1: got no style, they got no drip. They just out
- 30:22Speaker 1: there and doing the same bullshit. And that's part mainly
- 30:27Speaker 1: why the plot it feels also so flat because it's
- 30:31Speaker 1: no growth.
- 30:33Speaker 2: I will say it's not like anything does happen with
- 30:36Speaker 2: his character, but I will say that, like you said,
- 30:40Speaker 2: for his dialogue, but also for cords Arc, non arc
- 30:45Speaker 2: is amazing in this film. I mean absolutely amazing. He
- 30:49Speaker 2: learns nothing, but he does go on a journey, and
- 30:53Speaker 2: the journey is absolutely incredible. And that's something that I
- 30:58Speaker 2: have not seen from this character as off yet. So
- 31:01Speaker 2: that is not a copy and paste of well, it's
- 31:03Speaker 2: a copy and paste of what happens to other characters
- 31:05Speaker 2: and other films, but it's his non learning along with
- 31:08Speaker 2: the journey.
- 31:09Speaker 3: I think that is hilarious.
- 31:10Speaker 2: And interesting and goes back to a main theme of
- 31:13Speaker 2: this film, which I don't think is a good one,
- 31:15Speaker 2: but I did find entertaining in certain characters is their nihilism.
- 31:21Speaker 3: Like the main villain.
- 31:24Speaker 2: Like I mentioned before, she is completely nihilistic, you know,
- 31:27Speaker 2: for just reasons. Yeah, But then, like you said, everyone
- 31:30Speaker 2: else's specially humans are nihilistic in their own way too,
- 31:33Speaker 2: because they go about their missions, their journey it does
- 31:37Speaker 2: not matter what is happening around them.
- 31:40Speaker 3: Death is coming for.
- 31:42Speaker 2: Them, and they're like, oh well, I'll just keep on
- 31:44Speaker 2: minding this oil.
- 31:45Speaker 1: It's strange, it's not like this like you don't, Like
- 31:48Speaker 1: you said, it's not even caring for your own life. No,
- 31:50Speaker 1: it's not for your comrade's life in the same fucking
- 31:53Speaker 1: boof as you.
- 31:54Speaker 3: It's just it's buffoonery.
- 31:56Speaker 1: It's npcism though it's like everybody was an NPC except
- 32:02Speaker 1: for Quaritch. And it's just mind boggling because it's just like,
- 32:06Speaker 1: to show me all of this on screen is such
- 32:08Speaker 1: a wealth and depth of life and creation in this world.
- 32:15Speaker 1: Half of them aren't real. And when I say not real,
- 32:17Speaker 1: I mean they have no character, they have no heart,
- 32:20Speaker 1: they have no soul. It's just I'm a robot and
- 32:23Speaker 1: I'm gonna get the oil and I'm going to murder
- 32:25Speaker 1: everything and I'm gonna you know, way waste to the land.
- 32:31Speaker 1: But there's no redeeming value or quality.
- 32:34Speaker 2: No, And Courage is straight up like chaotic evil because
- 32:37Speaker 2: he is just out there doing whatever he wants to
- 32:39Speaker 2: do at any point. He's like the worst player character ever,
- 32:43Speaker 2: you know, when you're when you're a Dungeamaster and you
- 32:46Speaker 2: have to deal with that one character, one dude who
- 32:48Speaker 2: just or one person who just wants to do whatever
- 32:51Speaker 2: they want.
- 32:51Speaker 1: Yeah, Like he just wants to see the world burned.
- 32:53Speaker 1: And I mess with that because that is true to
- 32:55Speaker 1: his character and he has not waivered since there were
- 32:59Speaker 1: times where he's like, oh well, maybe maybe he'll turn
- 33:01Speaker 1: a new leaf. Every not quar and Vraine okay and
- 33:07Speaker 1: Varraine too, Like I messed with that, like something I
- 33:10Speaker 1: do mess with that. Like, No, this isn't the typical
- 33:13Speaker 1: where like you know, the character finds themselves like you say,
- 33:15Speaker 1: they're not the arc. They find it, not find it
- 33:17Speaker 1: so but they wake up right the connect to a
- 33:21Speaker 1: will whatever and they figure, oh snap, we want people,
- 33:25Speaker 1: you know, we want big family.
- 33:27Speaker 2: No Vrain is like fuck a Will from the gate
- 33:30Speaker 2: and fuck a Wood to the end.
- 33:33Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 33:33Speaker 1: So plot plot narrative, I mean, same ship.
- 33:41Speaker 2: Something we have not mentioned pretty much at all is
- 33:44Speaker 2: Sully in his family.
- 33:48Speaker 5: Plot narrative doesn't change at all with the k we
- 33:57Speaker 5: are dealing with the grief and this film meet pretty much.
- 34:01Speaker 1: Did you remember his son no fast in the last one.
- 34:04Speaker 2: No, I'm not. I'm not you know, I'm not gonna
- 34:07Speaker 2: hold you. I'm not gonna lie.
- 34:09Speaker 3: You know.
- 34:10Speaker 2: Sorry to this man, I did not know why people
- 34:13Speaker 2: were crying at the beginning of this film. This film
- 34:15Speaker 2: takes place pretty much like immediately after the.
- 34:18Speaker 1: Last immediately after.
- 34:19Speaker 2: So I have not seen the last film since the
- 34:22Speaker 2: first time I saw it because, like I said, I
- 34:23Speaker 2: was horrified. So I did not remember. You know that
- 34:27Speaker 2: I barely remember any of their family for that matter.
- 34:30Speaker 2: I know that Sigourney Weaver plays their clone teenage daughter
- 34:33Speaker 2: for reasons that I do not understand, like Monkey Boy's name,
- 34:37Speaker 2: But I did not remember that their son was murdered
- 34:41Speaker 2: in the last film.
- 34:42Speaker 3: I did not.
- 34:43Speaker 1: Sigoury is there because when she her American, not American body,
- 34:47Speaker 1: her American body, the white woman human body passed and
- 34:51Speaker 1: they transfer her consciousness and it became and an hour
- 34:54Speaker 1: was there. So I was said, I'm gonna I'm gonna
- 34:56Speaker 1: do something with the Charley witshit with this and make
- 34:59Speaker 1: you the so and then So this is young girl
- 35:02Speaker 1: with Sigourney Reever's voice, which I have found critically creepy. Yes,
- 35:07Speaker 1: every episode and every.
- 35:08Speaker 2: Movie, I was like, this is weird, and even weirder
- 35:11Speaker 2: when she, you know, interacts. So she has this relationship
- 35:14Speaker 2: going on with monkey Boy, and that's very weird as well.
- 35:18Speaker 2: But it's more than that. Well, the problem not like
- 35:24Speaker 2: that weirdness is in that stuff. That's her voice and everything.
- 35:28Speaker 2: But I also don't like how a wall seems to
- 35:31Speaker 2: favor the human characters. Listen, listen, why you know the
- 35:37Speaker 2: whites listen this It's weird.
- 35:42Speaker 1: So this is something. This is another I mentioned tragic.
- 35:44Speaker 1: This is one of the things I struggled with the series,
- 35:46Speaker 1: and particularly in this episode of Avatar. Avatar to the
- 35:51Speaker 1: the soap opera if you will, the White Saviors, the
- 35:54Speaker 1: whole white savery thing, it happens again, because this is
- 35:57Speaker 1: a mixture of the first two film, it does happen again.
- 35:59Speaker 1: In fact, it's I'm not going to tell y'all what happens,
- 36:01Speaker 1: but it's a circle of life. I'll say that the
- 36:03Speaker 1: circle of life happens.
- 36:05Speaker 3: Again.
- 36:07Speaker 1: It's interesting what I found myself doing, and maybe this
- 36:10Speaker 1: is an interrogation of myself. What I found myself doing
- 36:12Speaker 1: is when they were like multiple not V on screen,
- 36:15Speaker 1: I found myself staring at the Jake Sully family and
- 36:18Speaker 1: looking at the nose, the contour the nose because again
- 36:21Speaker 1: because the tech from a technical perspective, the design is
- 36:24Speaker 1: so unreal and incredible, they make the catchers also favor
- 36:28Speaker 1: the actors in certain ways. Right, So the white folks, obviously,
- 36:31Speaker 1: you know they have more caucus pasion from the Couca's
- 36:35Speaker 1: mountains nose Europeeing. You know, they look different than the
- 36:39Speaker 1: traditional homegrown Navi, right, they look a little different. You know, Yeah,
- 36:43Speaker 1: they got them skin and all that stuff, but you
- 36:44Speaker 1: could tell something uping. Also, I think they have different
- 36:46Speaker 1: number of fingers, right, while at least Jake does because
- 36:48Speaker 1: his he had an avatar. And then the regular let
- 36:53Speaker 1: me say the regular, but the indigenous Novi they clearly
- 36:56Speaker 1: they look at it and they look ethnic. They got
- 36:58Speaker 1: the broad noses on us and I just could not
- 37:01Speaker 1: help but just keep staring like it's white savior, nafist.
- 37:08Speaker 1: I've been here for millennia, white people that come in
- 37:11Speaker 1: and all of a sudden, fic shit, Like I just
- 37:15Speaker 1: I could not shake that conversation my head throughout as
- 37:19Speaker 1: I was watching the film, and it was oh, and
- 37:23Speaker 1: I know people are gonna be like, oh, bro, shut up,
- 37:25Speaker 1: It's just a movie. It's just a movie.
- 37:27Speaker 3: Whatever.
- 37:28Speaker 1: Hey man, listen when you're using obvious allegory to real
- 37:32Speaker 1: life and does actually imagery, And I'm like, I'm gonna
- 37:38Speaker 1: I'm gonna see it, and I'm gonna see it. I'm
- 37:40Speaker 1: gonna call it out.
- 37:41Speaker 2: And that's my point, Like when I we're going back
- 37:43Speaker 2: to monkey Boy and making this man the center of
- 37:45Speaker 2: the film as they did in this one, was really
- 37:49Speaker 2: a weird choice for me because one, he's a white
- 37:52Speaker 2: man with dreadlocks, which.
- 37:53Speaker 1: Was just like Jake.
- 37:55Speaker 2: Yeah, but this dude is pure white, you know, he
- 37:57Speaker 2: is blond hair, blue eyed white, you know, I mean,
- 37:59Speaker 2: Jake is Jake. Is also interesting because it's like, as
- 38:02Speaker 2: we know, Jake has straight parcazoid hair in its human
- 38:05Speaker 2: form a dreads now and then, but when he turns
- 38:08Speaker 2: into a Navvy, suddenly he gets dreads and it's like, okay,
- 38:11Speaker 2: I guess, but it.
- 38:14Speaker 1: Feels very cultural appropriation. And again, I know people are
- 38:16Speaker 1: not gonna like some people are not gonna like to
- 38:18Speaker 1: hear that. They're gonna go, oh, these are magic catches,
- 38:20Speaker 1: all those uff.
- 38:20Speaker 2: But again, imagery, imagery. And so then when you have
- 38:24Speaker 2: the imagery of a white man with dreads being called
- 38:28Speaker 2: something that has been used historically to derogatory for black people, monkeys,
- 38:35Speaker 2: it's interesting to me.
- 38:37Speaker 1: And then I didn't even make that. I just thought
- 38:38Speaker 1: they were being that's what they called it. Oh, I
- 38:40Speaker 1: didn't find an issue with tech.
- 38:42Speaker 2: Oh no, that was my But as soon as I,
- 38:44Speaker 2: you know, saw the white man with dreads being called
- 38:46Speaker 2: a monkey, I'm like, whoa, that's it's just it's it's
- 38:49Speaker 2: maybe you know what I mean.
- 38:50Speaker 3: It's interesting.
- 38:52Speaker 2: It's one of those things where it's like, I can't
- 38:54Speaker 2: that's racist, but it's not. But it's interesting. I'm gonna
- 38:58Speaker 2: pay more attention. And then when you have in this film,
- 39:01Speaker 2: like I said before, when you have the evil Navvi
- 39:04Speaker 2: being the ones who hoot and holler a bit more
- 39:08Speaker 2: than the good Navy's.
- 39:11Speaker 4: Screaming, hollery and much more of the know it felt
- 39:18Speaker 4: and they're you know, they're the ones who are over
- 39:20Speaker 4: there taking scalps, you know.
- 39:22Speaker 1: What, they're there nature But that okay, and but on
- 39:26Speaker 1: a really bad version of the fire.
- 39:28Speaker 2: And the whole act of stalping is something that is
- 39:31Speaker 2: not true. I mean, not that it's not true, not
- 39:34Speaker 2: that people didn't do it. It's been overblown and you know,
- 39:39Speaker 2: made into something that it wasn't where it's like every
- 39:42Speaker 2: indigenous person ever was out there stalping.
- 39:44Speaker 1: White and now once again, now you are cultural appropriation,
- 39:49Speaker 1: like you're doing it, like it happens over and over
- 39:51Speaker 1: and over and over and over.
- 39:53Speaker 2: And then, like I say, there are choices that I
- 39:56Speaker 2: won't reveal that are made with Monkey Boy's care in
- 40:00Speaker 2: this film where it just goes wow, you know, like okay,
- 40:05Speaker 2: I get. And then there are other choices where I
- 40:08Speaker 2: found like I've loved it because you know, they also
- 40:10Speaker 2: addressed this idea of gentrification and what it will mean
- 40:15Speaker 2: for Pandora, and that was somewhat well done. But the
- 40:22Speaker 2: let's just say, the ending shot reminded me of a
- 40:27Speaker 2: famous I mean cheesiness. But right before that ending shot,
- 40:32Speaker 2: reminded me of the famous infamous shot from Game of
- 40:36Speaker 2: Thrones featuring Khalisi.
- 40:39Speaker 1: That yeah, yeah, I know you're talking about. Let's move
- 40:44Speaker 1: on to a dialogue. Why tragedy. Listen, listen. This is
- 40:51Speaker 1: how we break down films. We talk about We talk
- 40:53Speaker 1: about it. We don't just say it sucks or it's great.
- 40:54Speaker 1: We explain.
- 40:55Speaker 3: Right.
- 40:56Speaker 1: The dialogue flat, nonsensical generally, you know, I I question
- 41:05Speaker 1: and this is where and this is where. It also
- 41:07Speaker 1: leads into the acting for me, where I said, like,
- 41:09Speaker 1: a lot of the acting is just like I'm here
- 41:11Speaker 1: for my check because the way a lot of those
- 41:15Speaker 1: lines are delivered, they're delivered with no intonation in the voice,
- 41:19Speaker 1: no undulation of the vowels or anything. Right, it's chess.
- 41:23Speaker 1: I'm here to save my brother, and my brother is
- 41:26Speaker 1: drowning underwater, and then Quarig is coming. Oh no, run.
- 41:32Speaker 1: And I'm not exaggerating. I wish I was. There a
- 41:35Speaker 1: lot of deliveries like that. Very as flat as the
- 41:38Speaker 1: character shows on screen, the dialogue is expressed in a
- 41:43Speaker 1: flat manner. Even when there is quote soul in the dialogue.
- 41:48Speaker 1: When you're trying to, I don't know, talk about something
- 41:50Speaker 1: spiritual whatever. It's just like, who the fuck wrote that,
- 41:54Speaker 1: James Cameron, because it's just it feels a bit remedial.
- 41:58Speaker 1: And and again I'm sure it's on purpose, but for
- 42:02Speaker 1: what end. I'm not saying you have to sound like
- 42:05Speaker 1: a professor. I'm not saying you have to use four
- 42:08Speaker 1: syllable words every five minutes. I'm just saying, like it's
- 42:13Speaker 1: like contrived spirituality. And how they what was the reason? Like,
- 42:20Speaker 1: it's just it, I'm trying so hard to make this,
- 42:25Speaker 1: to write this beautifully that I can tell you try
- 42:29Speaker 1: to make this sound beautiful, and it wasn't beautiful because
- 42:32Speaker 1: you was trying hard as fuck and that I can't
- 42:36Speaker 1: get over. It was just some of the stuff that
- 42:39Speaker 1: they were saying. I was like, I want to mute this.
- 42:42Speaker 1: If I could just mute this like you said it earlier,
- 42:44Speaker 1: I could just mute this, I feel better about it,
- 42:46Speaker 1: and again I'll be enjoying myself. Then a nigga say
- 42:50Speaker 1: something stupid and I'm like, and not funny, stupid, just
- 42:53Speaker 1: like why would you say that? And ruin the moment
- 42:54Speaker 1: for me?
- 42:55Speaker 2: Yeah, I was immersed.
- 42:57Speaker 1: In your culture and your world and then you said
- 42:59Speaker 1: some wild shit like I don't know, We're gonna get
- 43:02Speaker 1: a lot of oil out of that blubber or whatever
- 43:04Speaker 1: the nigga said who was killing the whales.
- 43:08Speaker 3: Yeah, all his dialogue is terrible.
- 43:10Speaker 2: And he was a returning character from the last film,
- 43:14Speaker 2: which made no sense to me at all. There was
- 43:18Speaker 2: no reason for that character to return. I thought they
- 43:20Speaker 2: were dead in the last film, and then for them
- 43:23Speaker 2: to return and still be on like you said there,
- 43:26Speaker 2: but it's the general theme of nihilism where everyone's just like,
- 43:29Speaker 2: I'm gonna do whatever I'm gonna do and I don't
- 43:32Speaker 2: care about the world around me.
- 43:34Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 43:35Speaker 2: Uh dialogue, Yeah, I same that you said. I have
- 43:39Speaker 2: nothing more to add other than like we said already
- 43:41Speaker 2: that Korch was great.
- 43:43Speaker 1: Yo, he's great. Untiri. I like Natiri because again she
- 43:47Speaker 1: she's one of those truer characters generally, no matter what's
- 43:51Speaker 1: going on, and that's the Dona's character. She'd be like,
- 43:54Speaker 1: that's cool, but I don't fuck with it. Let me
- 43:57Speaker 1: let me tell you why. And she she bought that.
- 44:00Speaker 1: So all of her dialogue was great. And as I'm saying,
- 44:02Speaker 1: I'm also just like, is James only caring about her?
- 44:05Speaker 1: And you know, partially monkey boy, whomever else, because it's
- 44:08Speaker 1: just like he his best work was given to her
- 44:12Speaker 1: and and Una of excuse me, Una is the name
- 44:14Speaker 1: of the of the of the actor. But in round,
- 44:17Speaker 1: his best stuff was given in those two and then
- 44:19Speaker 1: Comedic Relief, quaritch everything and everybody else just had like
- 44:23Speaker 1: throwaway lines and it was nothing particularly memorable besides those three.
- 44:29Speaker 1: Unless you're talking about stuff that the last person someone
- 44:31Speaker 1: says before they die or something.
- 44:34Speaker 3: You just think it out of my mind.
- 44:36Speaker 1: I was just oh my god, I just I and
- 44:41Speaker 1: I'm not couldn't say that like like after it has
- 44:42Speaker 1: been this masterpiece of dialogue. It's never has been. It's
- 44:45Speaker 1: just my god, like give more than the same, nigga,
- 44:51Speaker 1: the good lines like spread them out a little bit, sprinkled,
- 44:53Speaker 1: trinkleed to wealth around. It is what it is.
- 44:56Speaker 2: Yeah, because I agree with you. I actually felt Zoe's hey,
- 45:00Speaker 2: you know what I mean? I did feel like And.
- 45:02Speaker 1: Then that goes back into the and remember I talk
- 45:04Speaker 1: about performance and acting, right, Zoe was acting. She was performing,
- 45:09Speaker 1: she was she was doing and again she's the postal
- 45:11Speaker 1: child of the French, at least she is to me
- 45:13Speaker 1: like she been riding since the beginning, so and yes,
- 45:16Speaker 1: so has Homeboy Jake Sully was Sam Worthington, alright, whatever,
- 45:22Speaker 1: but Zoe and so that's why I'm like, it's clear
- 45:24Speaker 1: like you're the favorite child, so that's why you get
- 45:26Speaker 1: the best of the best. But also she can deliver,
- 45:29Speaker 1: and even if you try to get good things to
- 45:31Speaker 1: the others, they're just it's just not happening. Again, it's
- 45:34Speaker 1: like I could feel that these people just went about
- 45:37Speaker 1: their business so they could get their check and go home.
- 45:40Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 45:42Speaker 1: Agree, And I'm not I don't think that's an exaggeration.
- 45:44Speaker 1: It's just it's just kind of clear to me. Especially
- 45:47Speaker 1: and again this is my last note about dialogue mister
- 45:50Speaker 1: monkey boy Spider. I don't understand why he has to
- 45:54Speaker 1: narrate everything he's doing. And I'm like, was that James's choice?
- 45:58Speaker 2: Like language, I'm like, the language you need to curse
- 46:02Speaker 2: every time he speats.
- 46:04Speaker 1: It's like again the force trying to force certain emotions
- 46:09Speaker 1: out of people based on how someone's acting or behaving.
- 46:11Speaker 1: And it's like, you don't like you are in an
- 46:15Speaker 1: expansive universe where I see it all. I'm not saying
- 46:17Speaker 1: you shouldn't speak, but you don't have to say, Oh,
- 46:21Speaker 1: my shirt is itchy. I'm gonna take this off now,
- 46:23Speaker 1: and now I'm gonna bend down and drink from the
- 46:26Speaker 1: river because I'm thirsty. Why are you saying the words?
- 46:30Speaker 1: Why are you narrating? Why are you self narrating? It
- 46:33Speaker 1: was bizarre to me. I'm thinking too hard. Apparently, Yes,
- 46:45Speaker 1: he's clearly cool. And that's the thing. That's why they
- 46:47Speaker 1: called me monoky for he's a fucking idiot. They tell
- 46:51Speaker 1: you that in his name.
- 46:53Speaker 2: That's like, see, that's what I'll saying earlier. That's what
- 46:56Speaker 2: I mean about the Navy. I feel like they know this.
- 46:59Speaker 3: Boys.
- 47:01Speaker 1: You don't call him, to call him scown and all that.
- 47:03Speaker 1: I think that get when I walked, I sat down
- 47:09Speaker 1: maybe two minutes after the movie started, so they was
- 47:12Speaker 1: soaring in the sky and ship. I sat down. Next scene,
- 47:14Speaker 1: here he come, and I go, this nigga, and then
- 47:17Speaker 1: I just started out last. And that's how the rest.
- 47:20Speaker 2: Of not be treated him, because already I had already
- 47:23Speaker 2: been dealing with him for like a minute or so,
- 47:25Speaker 2: so I was bro And his name is supposed to be.
- 47:31Speaker 1: Miles, Miles, Miles is real.
- 47:33Speaker 2: It's this human I swear to god, his dad said Sean.
- 47:37Speaker 2: At one point, I swear to god, I was. And
- 47:40Speaker 2: that was the one time when I felt, you know,
- 47:42Speaker 2: Chords is his real dad. So that was the one
- 47:44Speaker 2: time when I felt something for the character. Was when
- 47:47Speaker 2: Cords said that, I was like, Okay, that's real name.
- 47:49Speaker 2: You know, finally somebody addresses this boy by something other
- 47:53Speaker 2: than Spider and.
- 47:55Speaker 3: Monkey monkey boy. It's not even just monkey. It's Monkey
- 47:58Speaker 3: Boy that really, you know, he's.
- 48:00Speaker 1: The boy that's not a lie. No, I listen, listen
- 48:03Speaker 1: just real quick. Did you feel any sentiment throughout the
- 48:06Speaker 1: movie like anything, like, did you feel anything? Did anything
- 48:09Speaker 1: feel real to you? Like, did anything actually make you
- 48:11Speaker 1: sad for real? Did an't thing actually make you upset?
- 48:14Speaker 1: For like like you were actually into it at any point?
- 48:16Speaker 3: Not especially, I think.
- 48:18Speaker 2: And it's it's the problem of a lot of these
- 48:22Speaker 2: characters being full cgi and then like the one human
- 48:26Speaker 2: I'm pretty much hate throughout the film, uh, and that's
- 48:29Speaker 2: monkey Boy.
- 48:31Speaker 3: And then no.
- 48:33Speaker 2: I will say, like Zoey didn't let me feel the
- 48:36Speaker 2: grief of losing her son, you know, and a black
- 48:40Speaker 2: woman being mad at trifling white men all around her.
- 48:42Speaker 3: I felt that, you know, that was definitely apparent in her.
- 48:47Speaker 1: Yeah, but it just it almost felt like all of
- 48:50Speaker 1: the like sad grief stuff. I felt that, and then
- 48:53Speaker 1: everything else I was just like okay, like and it
- 48:57Speaker 1: was also connected to a certain delivery, So okay, fine, pacing,
- 49:03Speaker 1: pacing way too long. Listen. The movie was three hour
- 49:09Speaker 1: seventeen minutes, which one of the funniest thing though, ben
- 49:12Speaker 1: about it being that long, I felt like the Nigga
- 49:16Speaker 1: James actually edited because there are certain scenes in the
- 49:19Speaker 1: last third of the movie. There are scenes where I
- 49:22Speaker 1: could tell, just from an editor perspective, I could tell
- 49:26Speaker 1: that he cut it like he like, there was twenty
- 49:28Speaker 1: more minutes of that scene. He said, no, we're gonna
- 49:30Speaker 1: we gotta take it out. It's too long. So he
- 49:31Speaker 1: cut it so like could There's certain scenes where it
- 49:34Speaker 1: jumps from one view to another and you can tell
- 49:36Speaker 1: it there was something there, and he removed it because
- 49:39Speaker 1: he knew it was running too long, and even in
- 49:41Speaker 1: him editing, it was still three hours seventeen minutes. Yeah,
- 49:48Speaker 1: but there's no lead, there's no leash, right, there's no gates.
- 49:51Speaker 1: It's his shit, so he could do what he wants.
- 49:53Speaker 2: Right, And overall, I thought it moved pretty well, but
- 49:58Speaker 2: it's still just so much pacing.
- 50:01Speaker 1: In terms of this the this speed. Did it maintained speed? Yeah?
- 50:05Speaker 1: Did it get in lows? Not enough that that I
- 50:09Speaker 1: was like, Oh, I got to get out of here.
- 50:10Speaker 3: No.
- 50:11Speaker 1: I think it was better. And this is another reason
- 50:14Speaker 1: why I was better than the second one. It was
- 50:15Speaker 1: better pacing. Yeah, the second one, there were there were
- 50:18Speaker 1: times where I literally had micro sleeps because I could
- 50:22Speaker 1: not keep my eyes open. And this was on No
- 50:24Speaker 1: Hate Ship. It's just nothing was happening. This one.
- 50:29Speaker 3: I was.
- 50:29Speaker 1: I was on the whole time and that was great,
- 50:32Speaker 1: but it was too long.
- 50:34Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 50:35Speaker 1: The music and the score or the score, the music
- 50:39Speaker 1: or the score, the score expressive on some John John oh,
- 50:44Speaker 1: rest in peace? John landis right, didn't he didn't they
- 50:46Speaker 1: say rest in peace to him?
- 50:47Speaker 3: At this? Uh?
- 50:50Speaker 1: The score, it sounds. You hear a lot of hissing
- 50:54Speaker 1: in the in the movie, you know, because it's not
- 50:56Speaker 1: very cat like, so you hear a lot of hissing,
- 50:58Speaker 1: a lot of a lot of guttural tones, birds squawking,
- 51:06Speaker 1: whales crying. You have a lot of pokemon innfl I
- 51:13Speaker 1: don't I can't remember the music. If it was really
- 51:15Speaker 1: like they did swell at a certain point where it
- 51:18Speaker 1: felt made the scene really feel good or anything.
- 51:21Speaker 2: This is kind of off. But and one last thing
- 51:24Speaker 2: that I really just didn't I feel is the other
- 51:29Speaker 2: Sun's Side West storyline with the whales was like it
- 51:35Speaker 2: felt just trying to nonsensical not but I just.
- 51:40Speaker 1: It felt disjointed, which is why he definitely edited a
- 51:43Speaker 1: bunch of stuff out.
- 51:44Speaker 2: I feel like, yeah, there was definitely some scenes chopped
- 51:47Speaker 2: down right in that session because that stuff was just like, Okay,
- 51:51Speaker 2: I guess cool, all right, I feel for the whales, fine,
- 51:56Speaker 2: all right, that's did this up with? And then and
- 52:00Speaker 2: like we said before, literally some of the same things,
- 52:04Speaker 2: especially in the conclusion.
- 52:05Speaker 3: It's just like this, we saw this in the first one.
- 52:08Speaker 2: We've seen this, and the second one the whales do
- 52:11Speaker 2: the same things they did before.
- 52:14Speaker 1: Yeah, how would you rate the film, whether it's one
- 52:19Speaker 1: to ten or letter grade.
- 52:21Speaker 2: It's interesting because, like I say, diminishing returns. But I
- 52:25Speaker 2: found if I'd never seen the first two, I would
- 52:28Speaker 2: think this would be my favorite one. Because I've seen
- 52:32Speaker 2: the first two, this is still my favorite one.
- 52:36Speaker 1: Pokemon Yellow was everybody's favorite two.
- 52:38Speaker 2: Yeah, whatever it is, it's because it combines what I
- 52:40Speaker 2: liked about the first two into a manageable but still
- 52:46Speaker 2: I need to fast forward a lot of it if
- 52:48Speaker 2: I ever watched this movie again.
- 52:50Speaker 1: Yeah, and you know what, The Way of the Water
- 52:53Speaker 1: was supposed to be the avatar for the new generation,
- 52:56Speaker 1: and you know, I'm sure it made cash money, but
- 52:59Speaker 1: I don't think it was it was received that well,
- 53:02Speaker 1: or I could be wrong. I feel like this is
- 53:04Speaker 1: going to be received better and maybe be the replacement
- 53:07Speaker 1: new avatar for the new generation because to your point,
- 53:10Speaker 1: it has all the quote unquote good things from the
- 53:13Speaker 1: first two.
- 53:15Speaker 2: Does it have enough for the marvelness of you know,
- 53:18Speaker 2: today's world?
- 53:20Speaker 3: And also three hours?
- 53:22Speaker 2: Does any you know like new generation have that type
- 53:25Speaker 2: of attention space like a tip top generation to watch
- 53:31Speaker 2: three hours? I was trying to watch Stranger Themes with
- 53:37Speaker 2: my nieces and nephews over the holiday, and the way
- 53:44Speaker 2: they would never look up from their phoney.
- 53:47Speaker 1: I mean, so listen, So wave the water right. It
- 53:50Speaker 1: made like six hundred and eighty four million in US
- 53:54Speaker 1: and Canada, and then it got like a seventy six
- 53:56Speaker 1: percent rotten tomatoes, so it was received decently.
- 54:01Speaker 3: I feel like distributor c right around that same level.
- 54:03Speaker 1: I don't think it's gonna be around the same maybe
- 54:06Speaker 1: slightly better.
- 54:06Speaker 2: I feel like this one might be slightly better, but
- 54:08Speaker 2: I think that three hour timeframe is gonna, you know,
- 54:12Speaker 2: keep it a riding around there, like I say, slly better.
- 54:18Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, So what's your what's your score again? Letter
- 54:21Speaker 1: grade or one to ten?
- 54:23Speaker 3: Mm hmm seven?
- 54:27Speaker 1: Okay. If I'm grading off of the strength of graphics, design,
- 54:35Speaker 1: performance and character, like if that if you took everything
- 54:38Speaker 1: else away and just gave me the asked me AO
- 54:40Speaker 1: graded on that, you you you ace the test. If
- 54:46Speaker 1: I'm putting everything in aggregate and I'll use the letter grade,
- 54:50Speaker 1: it comes down considerably. Uh C plus. I think it's
- 54:54Speaker 1: accurate from for me as well.
- 54:57Speaker 2: I gotta knock it down the C minus, just like
- 55:00Speaker 2: I said, the graphics stuffy a B plus.
- 55:02Speaker 1: But I say C plus. Listen, you get to play
- 55:04Speaker 1: his Knuckles in a new level on the same levels.
- 55:06Speaker 1: I mean, come on that. You can't you can't beat that,
- 55:08Speaker 1: so you get the plus.
- 55:09Speaker 2: Yeah, but it's also like they force you to play
- 55:11Speaker 2: as Knuckles for like.
- 55:12Speaker 1: You know, wait, hey, listen, there's niggas who have never
- 55:15Speaker 1: seen this, so they're gonna be like, oh, this is
- 55:19Speaker 1: ava just what you're talking about.
- 55:21Speaker 2: Yeah, but it's when they're like, sit down and watch this,
- 55:23Speaker 2: you know, play Knuckles for two days straight is when
- 55:27Speaker 2: it doesn't get that fun.
- 55:28Speaker 3: And that's the you know, that's one thing with this one.
- 55:30Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, again and again I'm looking at it
- 55:34Speaker 1: from from a very critical perspective. If I'm looking at
- 55:37Speaker 1: its pure entertainment, I think it's still a C plus.
- 55:40Speaker 1: It's because it's long as fuck. And if you mentioned
- 55:43Speaker 1: the screen generation, the the top generation, whatever you want
- 55:47Speaker 1: to call it, it's just and the the there, the
- 55:51Speaker 1: patience is there. It's just that the patients for this
- 55:54Speaker 1: is that there.
- 55:55Speaker 2: I don't know, because, like I said, I'll watch Infinity,
- 55:58Speaker 2: war Lord of the Rings, any of them joints at
- 56:00Speaker 2: any time of the day. This was still it still
- 56:02Speaker 2: struggled for me at points to get through it, the
- 56:04Speaker 2: whole thing, and I don't want to see it again,
- 56:07Speaker 2: you know where I would watch the whole thing, but
- 56:09Speaker 2: I'll watch any of those over and over again.
- 56:11Speaker 1: You know listen. Oh yeah, I'm just trying to find
- 56:14Speaker 1: one more thing that I did, like, you know, seeing
- 56:16Speaker 1: all the different not Vie and how they were designed,
- 56:20Speaker 1: you know, depending on the water not fee, or the
- 56:23Speaker 1: sky not fee, or the forest not being you know,
- 56:27Speaker 1: cool Pokemon shit, you know what.
- 56:28Speaker 3: I'm saying, but uh, Pokemon at least a little different.
- 56:32Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, should you see it?
- 56:37Speaker 3: Ben?
- 56:37Speaker 1: Would you? Would you tell people go see it? Don't
- 56:40Speaker 1: look at don't do the camera look, don't look at
- 56:42Speaker 1: the camera when you say.
- 56:43Speaker 2: That, like, I mean, yes, if you want to see
- 56:49Speaker 2: some big explosive action on the bitch screen with some
- 56:53Speaker 2: really dope visuals, I will say that this is definitely
- 56:56Speaker 2: the best looking joint.
- 56:57Speaker 3: Of all three.
- 56:58Speaker 2: It's the best looking, and I mean it looks incredible,
- 57:01Speaker 2: Like I was blown away by that.
- 57:03Speaker 3: But you know, other than that, they're just saying much
- 57:05Speaker 3: to it, you know.
- 57:06Speaker 1: But if you know, and if you're okay with that,
- 57:08Speaker 1: you good.
- 57:09Speaker 3: You're good. You're good if you're looking.
- 57:10Speaker 1: For anything existential, you know what happened on the first one,
- 57:14Speaker 1: Like people were like unlive in themselves because they couldn't
- 57:16Speaker 1: really go to Pandora. That's wild, yeah, man, But again
- 57:21Speaker 1: then that was something unprecedented that back in the day,
- 57:23Speaker 1: back at that time, So I you know, I don't
- 57:24Speaker 1: think that's gonna be happening again. But okay, so Avatar
- 57:28Speaker 1: fire and ash it does drop what we said December nineteenth, yep,
