- 0:00Dot com. Welcome to the Daily Quote, the
- 0:06podcast designed to kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:10I'm your host, Andrew McGivern, and let's jump into today's
- 0:13quote from Aristotle, the ancient Greek philosopher whose
- 0:18ideas still shape how we think about ethics, logic and human
- 0:22nature. He once said say nothing, do
- 0:28nothing, be nothing, and no one will criticize you.
- 0:35This might be the most brutally honest quote about criticism
- 0:38ever written. Aristotle isn't giving advice
- 0:42here, he's stating a hard truth. If you want to avoid criticism,
- 0:48the solution is simple. Disappear.
- 0:53Say nothing, do nothing, be nothing.
- 0:58And yeah, if you do that, no one will criticize you.
- 1:02You'll be completely safe from judgement.
- 1:06You'll also be completely irrelevant because here's what
- 1:11Aristotle understood 2400 years ago.
- 1:15Criticism is the price of participation.
- 1:19It's the cost of doing anything meaningful.
- 1:23Say something bold, Someone will disagree.
- 1:27Say something different, someone will say you're doing it wrong.
- 1:33Be someone who stands for something and someone will tear
- 1:39you down. That's not a bug, that's a
- 1:43feature of being alive and engaged in the world.
- 1:47The only way to avoid criticism is to remove yourself from the
- 1:51arena entirely, To make yourself so small, so quiet, so
- 1:57invisible, that there's nothing for anyone to criticize.
- 2:02But most people don't actually choose that path consciously.
- 2:07They choose it by default. They avoid speaking up because
- 2:10someone might disagree. They avoid trying something new
- 2:15because someone might judge them.
- 2:18They avoid becoming who they want to be because someone might
- 2:22criticize them. They think they're being smart.
- 2:27They think they're protecting themselves.
- 2:31What they're actually doing is choosing to be nothing.
- 2:34And Aristotle is showing what that costs us.
- 2:40So here's the question. What are you not saying, not
- 2:45doing or not becoming because you're afraid of criticism?
- 2:51Because if you want to avoid all criticism, Aristotle's formula
- 2:55works perfectly. Say nothing, do nothing, be
- 2:59nothing. But if you actually want to
- 3:02live, criticism comes with the territory, and I'd say it's a
- 3:07pretty good sign that you're doing the right thing.
- 3:12That's it for today. I'm Anna McGivern, signing off
- 3:15for now, but I'll be back tomorrow.
- 3:19Same pod time, same pod station with another daily quote.
