- 8:41coloring bill, general description matches up in all of these reports. Man,
- 8:46this bird doesn't care if we know what he looks like. Sounds like a
- 8:50new boy to me, just starting out, yea. And from what all
- 8:52three victims who said about his attitude, uncertainty, nervousness, he hasn't that

- 9:50him, mister, No, he was a nice looking guy. Didn't look
- 9:54like no stick up artist. I thought it was a nice fellow. About
- 9:58twenty five would you say, Well, I'm not very good on ages,
- 10:01but around there I guess out. He got out of the car and said
- 10:05he wanted to use the phone. Right, Yeah, that's it, sergeant.
- 10:07I filled the tank. He walked inside the station here. He was
- 10:11still on the phone when I finished. I came inside and he hung up
- 10:15and turned around and he had a gun in his hand. Well, i've
- 10:18seen her right away. What kind of a gun? Little thing twenty five
- 10:22or thirty two, something like that. He didn't say anything at first,
- 10:24he just sort of stood there, shaking a little. Then I began to
- 10:30shake. Wow, I scared that thing was going to go off. Well,
- 10:33he walked over to me, said it right in here, man,
- 10:37He said, I want all the money you've got. He may have been
- 10:41nervous, but he meant it. I didn't argue with him either. Oh
- 10:43I got a customer, all right? Go right? Aha? Hey,
- 10:50yeah, hey, you got any change? Oh? Yeah, I think

- 11:48Lieutenant? We're going to try say. Look, do you happen to hear
- 11:52anything he was saying on the phone when you walked in? Ohee? I
- 11:56can't think of anything. Maybe he said goodbye to someone, you know,
- 12:01I really don't think he was talking to anybody on that phone. I think
- 12:05he just pretended he was using it so he could get me in here by
- 12:07the register. I got to get this guy's changed. Okay, I think
- 12:13I'll get me one of these things. It seems a good idea. Well,
- 12:16if you're driving on a long crypt as well. Hey, a thirty
- 12:22two is a woman's gun. Anybody's gun, Ben, Yeah, and all.
- 12:28I was held up once before in nineteen forty six. Police never caught
- 12:31the guy. I don't think they even cared. Wake camis to ton might
- 12:37ask you to come down and look at some suspects tomorrow. Tomorrow. Gee,
- 12:41that's my day off. Oh we like to get this guy. Sure,
- 12:43appreciate your help. Wow, okay, I'll talk to the wife.
- 12:48But I didn't see how you're gonna get him. He could be in China
- 12:50now there's Oh hey, that's a police car, isn't it. Yeah,
- 13:01Hi, Ben, Hi missus. Thelma Lacey works at the Pearl Street pharmacy
- 13:05over there. How are you doing with Thelma? Tell him what you told
- 13:07me. I saw that man drive in here tonight, the man who held
- 13:11him up. I'm going he was in the drug store before that, sat
- 13:13down at the fountain for maybe an hour. I didn't think anything about it
- 13:16until a little while ago when this officer came in. How do you know
- 13:20it was the same man. Telma, Well, he had this green car
- 13:22parked out in front, spiffy looking car. He just wheeled it around and
- 13:26came right in the station. I saw him from inside the store case.
- 13:30It's from the drug store man, sounds like it. Did you talk to
- 13:33this man? Telma? Oh, yeah, we talked. You've known him
- 13:35before? Oh? No, Tonight's the first time I ever saw him.
- 13:39He said his name was Roy. Do you tell you his last name?
- 13:41No, but I think I can find out for you. Oh how Oh?
- 13:46I told him I was married. But when he left, he kind
- 13:48of laughed and said he'd keep trying. Said he'd drop in again and see
- 13:52me first chance he got. Every Saturday night on CBS Radio, Tarzan brings

- 14:52Thirteen? Cherry Hills Station M sixty four downs yep I EH thirteen and forty
- 15:01eight dollars. Not bad for two weeks work. He's a one man epidemic.
- 15:07Ben He's making monkeys out of his feet. Thirteen jobs in two weeks,
- 15:11and we can't even get a line on him. We know exactly what
- 15:13he looks like and how he operates. We have his description on every bulletin
- 15:16and a half a dozen good prints from those cars he's stolen. Still we
- 15:20can't stop. Well, he hasn't pulled a job for two nights now.
- 15:24Maybe he's left home. I doubt it. He's been doing too well around
- 15:26here to quit now. Hey, idea wants to know if you know anything
- 15:31about these Uh huh, how about this one? Let me see. Yeah,
- 15:37Small and Crockett handled it. Okay, if they go over to work
- 15:41on well, yeah, you can put them on the night Watch. Okay,
- 15:43Hey, wait a minute, Cline, Huh. While you're at it,
- 15:46we might as well get the rest of this stuff for sign. All
- 15:50of these filling station jobs have been pulled in suburban residential areas Cherry Hills,
- 15:54Park Hill, Pershing Heights, Capitol Hill, Ravada, Lynndale, and monarch.
- 16:00Oh right in here. He doesn't move from this kind of area.
- 16:06And we'll bank on that, and we'll bank on the fact that you'll keep
- 16:10right on picking off these stations and starting the night. I want an extra
- 16:12car in every one of these districts. Two minute the car. Okay,
- 16:15we'll be up to the offices assigned to locate every filling station in the particular
- 16:18area, and they keep special watch on those stations, including the ones that
- 16:22have already been held up. You might come around twice. Oh what hours,
- 16:26man? Uh pete, what's the time incident? None of the whole
- 16:30ups have been pulled before dark, none later than midnight. Mus start them
- 16:33at seven. Keep mondeled one line. Every man should have a sheet from
- 16:37the stats office on this case. General description will be enough, at least
- 16:40most of them agree on. Then, all right, is that it?
- 16:41Yeah, and he's got thirteen stations in those areas, about eighty two more
- 16:52ago. Don't remind me. Just split everybody's shift. But we'll try it
- 16:56this way until something happens. Yeah, he's found to make a mistake soon.
- 17:00He's already made it right when he held up that first station thirty three
- 17:17fourth fifteen and four four or five five east cold. You're a nice night.
- 17:21Yeah, I want to turn down chessman. M hmm. I saw
- 17:26McMasters today. No, do you find out what's wrong? Funny thing?
- 17:30And then then I get in his office and lay down on the table and
- 17:33stop my next I thought I was crazy. Maybe you are. Oh I
- 17:40watch you. I saw him. If you see you, well I might
- 17:44be a five h two Yeah, OK, I'll call him. Yeah,
- 17:47wait a minute. Eleven slugging Federal Boulevard and thirty second coming station. That's
- 17:52down one more block. Let's moveee. You're a seventeen K. Seventeen K,
- 17:57you're eleven slugging droll Boulevard at thirty second going stations, ambulance on the
- 18:03way there. It is. Yeah, people gone home gone, let's make
- 18:14it up. Alright, Ben Pete, alright. Hi. Victim's name is
- 18:15Eddie Fremont in here, I say skull fraights R. I think he's got
- 18:27a real wall up there, cash register like this. Yeah, quite a
- 18:34nice. I'm working here alone about an hour ago, check back about ten
- 18:37twenty. Didn't see him around then we found them, any witnesses not so
- 18:41far. I put out a call. He's coming to Okay, Kim,
- 18:47easy easy, hurts need a hand? No, that's okay. Can you
- 18:55hear me? Son? Yeah, I'm a police officer. Ambulance will be
- 19:00here in a minute. Can you tell us what happened? He did?
- 19:03Take it easy enough, Robin? How did it happen? So he drove
- 19:08in, said he wanted some gas filled his tank? Well while he came
- 19:15in here to follow? What kind of car it? Chrysler convertible fifty?
- 19:18You got the license? No? It was a cream colored job right in.
- 19:26Did you got a good look at him? Oh? Sure? I
- 19:29was watching him all the time. I was filling the tank. When I
- 19:33finished, I walked in here. He turned around. He had a gun
- 19:36in his hand. I didn't think he meant it. I thought he was
- 19:40kidding me. I laughed at him. You've read about these filling station hold
- 19:44ups, haven't you? Yeah, but not him. Imagine him coming in
- 19:48to hold me. Maybe he didn't recognize me. Do you know him?
- 19:52Yeah? We graduated high school to get him in thirty eight. Name's Roy
- 19:56Dayton. Yes, what is it? How do you do? Well?
- 20:14We'd like to see Roy Dayton. Please, I'm Roy's mother. What is
- 20:18it you want? Is he home? Missus Dayton, I'm missus Courtney.
- 20:22Roy is not home. If you'll give me the message, I'll see that
- 20:26he gets it. This is Sergeant Cargo, Missus Courtney. I'm Lieutenant Guthrie
- 20:30with police officers. How do you do? How do you do? Did
- 20:33you say police are? Lieutenant? Yes, ma'am? Is it something important?
- 20:40We like to know where we can get in touch with him? Well,
- 20:42he's out of town. Man, I'm late for an appointment. Well
- 20:47this is important, Missus Courtney like to talk to you, dear. Will
- 20:51it take long? I don't wish to appear impolite, but I am late.
- 20:56Come inside, Please in here, sit down? Please? What is
- 21:08so urgent? Why do you want to see Roy? A routine investigation?
- 21:12Missus Courtney. You say he's out of town. Yes, he's in Chicago.
- 21:18Is Roy in trouble? Where's he staying in Chicago? I don't know.
- 21:22He'll probably be back in a few days. I'll have him get in
- 21:25touch with you when he gets home. What is it a traffic byo Lan?
- 21:27When did he go to Chicago? He left two weeks ago. Lieutenant.
- 21:34You have an annoying habit of disregarding my question, why do you want
- 21:40him? We have reason to believe your son is connected with a series of
- 21:42hold ups. We're investigating possibly absurd, Lieutenant, absolutely the most absurd thing
- 21:48I ever heard, And we're just trying to get all the facts. Missus
- 21:51Courtney. We have to follow every lead. It's our job. You understand
- 21:55that, of course, But doesn't this home and the obvious environment he's had
- 22:02influence you at all? And as I say, we have to follow every
- 22:04leave. Is Roy in Chicago on a visit or is it business? Just
- 22:10a visit? But you don't know where he's staying. No? Did he
- 22:14go by train or plane? I had no idea. He left one night
- 22:18while I was out. I came home all of his things were gone.
- 22:22Did he have a car? No? Roy always used my car. What
- 22:26kind of work does he do? You're making me terribly late. Sorry.
- 22:33Roy works for me, managing the estate in the ranch. Have you heard
- 22:36from him? Not a word? It seems strange he'd go away and not
- 22:41an impertinent thought. Missus Courtney understand. We have to find him, and
- 22:45we will find him. Our job is to get as much information about his
- 22:48habits and where he might be as we can you act as though he were
- 22:52a fugitive. What is this all about? We can tell better after we
- 22:56talk to him. Well, I'm certain I can't help you, then here
- 23:00is my can. If he gets in touch with you, would you mind
- 23:02giving me a ring? Please? Not at all? What connection do you
- 23:07think Roy has with these hold ups. We think he's a man who's been
- 23:11pulling them, holding people up with a gun. Yes, well, thank
- 23:18you for your time. Yeah, thank you, Good day, lieutenant.
- 23:25Yes, Roy is not in Chicago. He's here in the city where he's
- 23:33living. I don't know. I've seen him on the street twice. He
- 23:34didn't even speak to me his own mother. I don't know how he's living.
- 23:38He's always depended on the estate me for everything. That's why I've been
- 23:44worried this time. When we've argued before and he's left, he's always had
- 23:48money with him when it runs out, he comes back. This time,
- 23:52he took no money with him. He hasn't touched the account. Can you
- 23:56think of any friends he might be staying with. I called all of them,
- 24:00unless they're lying, He's not with any of Them's wife, you know
- 24:04about her. He found out he was married to a girl named Kareen Hellman
- 24:08in nineteen forty five the marriage was annulled. You know where we can locate
- 24:12her, Missus Courtney. I understand she lives in New York City. Now
- 24:17Roy never should have married her in the first place. Why do you say
- 24:19that his place is here? I can't delay any longer. It's past eleven.
- 24:26You'll have to excuse me certainly and thank you for your help. Not
- 24:29at all. I'm certain this is all a mistake. I can't think of
- 24:33any reason Roy would go out and hold up a person. I can think
- 24:36of one. He hasn't touched your account here it is. How do you
- 24:56come on? All the pictures twelve years old? Three of them were positive.
- 25:00Dayton's a guy wants some of this? What is iced tea? No?
- 25:04Thanks, no thanks, gwan. We don't have to print that picture
- 25:08of where you don't get a line on him pretty soon? Who's watching that
- 25:11hut? Small and Islands or crocodile going on a four with Murphy? Okay?
- 25:15Are you better keep one man free to watch Missus Courtney. Lieutenant Guthrie,
- 25:18I don't think you'll remember me, Lieutenant. This is still malasy at
- 25:22the Pearl Street pharmacy for sure. I remember you, miss Lacy. What
- 25:23can I do for him? That Roy follow that we were talking about,
- 25:26Lieutenant. He's in here now having double molded milky. Pull in a here
- 25:44pete away from the entrance, right. I'll be careful, Benn. He's
- 25:52a newcomer. Nobody's giving him any trouble yet. You can't tell what he
- 25:56might do if he has that gun on him. Mis stay close to the

- 27:23right, Uh, police officers want to talk to you, the police before.
- 27:33I haven't done anything. Heck, well, what is this? We'll
- 27:37talk about it downtown. Let's go. You're arresting me. What do you
- 27:41think the lineup? Or before you passed the innocent, the vagrant, the
- 28:03thief, the murderer. Listen again next week when we again bring you the
- 28:08lineup. May I have your attention, please, you people up here on
- 28:15the other side of the wire in the audience room, may I have your
- 28:17attention? Please? Thank you. My name is Cougar. Sergeant Pete Cougar
- 28:22all explain the latter. The lineup, starring Bill Johnstone as Lieutenant Ben Guthrie
- 28:36with Jack Moyles a Sergeant Pete Carger, was written by E Jack Newman with
- 28:40music by Eddie Dunsteader. Featured in tonight's cast were High ever Back, Peter
- 28:44Leeds, Parley Bear, Gil Stratton, Junior, Howard McNair, Virginia greg
- 28:48and Leigh Patrick. The lineup was transcribed in Hollywood by Him d'vaier. Tomorrow
- 29:07Night, Von Monroe's guest songbird will be Francis Irvin von Francis, the Moon

- 29:15favorite song, keep It a Secret, Boomerang, Close Your Dreamy Eyes,
- 29:19and other top favorites This week in America, Vaughan's College Salute will embrace vocally,
- 29:25of course, Georgia, Tech, and Mississippi. Don't miss CBS Radio's
- 29:29Von Monroe Show tomorrow night on most of these same stations, Dan cubberly speaking,
- 29:48and remember American now listens to one hundred and five million radio sets and
- 29:52listens most to the CBS Radio Network. Welcome back. At this point in
- 30:52the Lineup's history, it really does feel like a lot of these shows are
- 30:56very much just similar. They're not at this point. They're all very proficiently
- 31:03run all the way through, but there's not a whole lot new or all
- 31:07that different from week to week. Speaking of that, we did get a
- 31:11couple of comments on the lineup. George emails in and says, my question
- 31:17concerns the recent episode of the Lineup about the car hop murder. Was the
- 31:21com exchange about cigarettes and advertising a not so subtle dig at Dragnet and its
- 31:27Fatima sponsors. That's an interesting question, particularly in light of Chesterfield's being mentioned
- 31:37in today's episode. My honest answer is I certainly hope not, because that
- 31:44would actually be kind of pathetic because with the lineup, you have a program
- 31:49that has had trouble holding a consistent sponsor and at that time did not have
- 31:56a sponsor, So making fun of the sponsor of the top police procedural iffy,
- 32:05I doubt that that was what that was about. Really, cigarette advertising
- 32:10was all pretty much the same for the most part. We don't I rarely
- 32:17intentionally leave them in, but they're all similar. They tell you that the
- 32:21cigarettes taste great, they're they're made from the choicest tobaccos. They'll talk perhaps
- 32:29about a t zone, how they're lying on the throats, and that's basically
- 32:34the whole promise of cigarette advertisements. And one reason why I tend not to
- 32:39play them is they're kind of boring and repetitive, and that joke really a
- 32:45couple of weeks ago, they were just playing on the nature of cigarette advertisements
- 32:51on the radio. Probably the only exception to that, and the most honest
- 32:55add keeping in mind that this was at a point when we didn't have the
- 33:01facts. At least the public didn't have the facts about the cancer causing properties
- 33:07a cigarettes. Smoking was Kimmel. They not Kimmel, but Raleigh Cigarettes.
- 33:12They did a series of radio ads where they said, you know what,
- 33:19tobaccos, the way the cigarettes are made, they're pretty much all the same.
- 33:24Because what Raleigh was us promoting with its cigarettes in late forties early fifties
- 33:32was that it had a coupon on the back that you could redeem for merchandise.
- 33:39And so their point was they all taste the same. Ours, come
- 33:44with a coupon on the back, and you can redeem for some free stuff.
- 33:46Their catalog program actually sounded pretty good, but I'd digress. Thanks so
- 33:51much for the question, and we have a couple comments on Facebook from LKA
- 33:55Williams regarding the Modern Sounds Case. I listen to the lineup the Modern Sounds
- 34:01Case. I enjoyed it. In your comments after the show, I realized
- 34:06that people have been unfaithful from the time that people started making promises to each
- 34:10other. However, the idea of glorifying that behavior, finding shameless pleasure in
- 34:15that behavior, setting it as a standard for the way we live our lives
- 34:17not good I'm not a prude, at least not in my mind, nor
- 34:21do I preach morality to others. I do believe in promises, mutual respect
- 34:24and love is a reason for partnerships marriage. If you like, lost is
- 34:28not love. I don't care what songs, movies, TV or celebrities say.
- 34:32And she posted another message says, however, I like old time radio
- 34:38because it's less explicit. This allows me to imagine as much or as little
- 34:43as I wish. Much of the media pushes the explicit so much we acquisite
- 34:46acquiesced to it so much that we don't set our own standards. We just
- 34:51go along with whatever everyone else is doing. Well, Thanks so much for
- 34:54the comment, and I will agree that that is one of the great charms
- 35:01of old time radio is just that it really is up to your imagination and
- 35:12they don't quite push the envelope as much. And I know that's part of
- 35:16the reason why we do have more families. We have some families that listen
- 35:22in, and I know that the less explicit content is a reason why a
- 35:25lot of them do so. So I appreciate your comments. Thanks so much.
