- 1:35Big man. How you feeling tonight, buddy?
- 1:38I'm feeling good. We're here on a Tuesday night.
- 1:43We are kind of full on into fall.
- 1:47Now that weather was nice today. Oh my gosh, the weather's been
- 1:50nice. It feels like since the middle
- 1:52of last week. After the hurricane came through
- 1:56a couple weeks ago, it feels like it hasn't turned back.
- 1:59We haven't seen it. I got fall.
- 2:01Baseball on over here, Yankees Guardians, Indians for one.
- 2:09We start getting midweek, football this week, with the fun
- 2:13building going on. Here we go on Wednesdays and
- 2:18then the Maxon started pretty soon on Tuesdays.
- 2:21They'll soon be a mat game back here.
- 2:24Baseball up here. It's it's the time of year, man.
- 2:28I mean, you guys you guys do anything fun over the weekend.
- 2:32We went down to South Boston man.
- 2:35We got it up the the county fair just before the game started on
- 2:40Saturday. Another sign of all right there
- 2:44County Fair brought some barbecue home from the fair had
- 2:47a little little dinner at the house while we watch the game so
- 2:50then get much better than that man.
- 2:52How about you? Baseball a lot of these the
- 2:55Saturday before the game and then went out to Lloyd's pumpkin
- 3:01farm out in Goochland on Saturday which was a blast the
- 3:07hey Fort, which is, I mean, it's hilarious to see kids, get up
- 3:13there, running jump up and down, corn maze, all that fun stuff,
- 3:17pick some pumpkins, there we go. Need to check.
- 3:20Got some got some good pigs with the kids a little girls.
- 3:23First time going out there. So So it was an absolute blast.
- 3:28So again it falls here and his football weather and you know
- 3:33Saturday was that great day had all the windows open up, open up
- 3:37here in the man cave, watching the game where the Hokies
- 3:41unfortunately do fall to pit 45-29.
- 3:46And I think for a lot of us that game I'm on my way to pick it
- 3:53felt like there was some hope, right?
- 3:55Some opium in there in that game.
- 3:58Yeah, we saw some signs of life and I think that's kind of what
- 4:01we've been looking for the last couple weeks.
- 4:06Especially from the offensive side of the ball, with some
- 4:08signs of life. And we finally got those, you
- 4:12know, the offense was able to run the ball, much more
- 4:14effectively against that pit front, which I was kind of
- 4:19shocked because that's probably One of the two best defensive
- 4:22fronts we've seen this season and the last time we saw in
- 4:26front that good we were pretty much shut the fuck out.
- 4:29So who are the fact that we were I'll say effective not good.
- 4:34But effective running the football against them is
- 4:37definitely a positive sign there you know and then other than
- 4:43that we saw kind of a mixed bag. We saw some things to like about
- 4:47what we saw in defense and then we had a good handful of plays
- 4:51that. We didn't like and then we saw
- 4:54very, very up and down special teams play.
- 4:56You had a big block that resulted in a touchdown but then
- 4:59you had a lot of short punts. Yeah.
- 5:02Mother's snafus. You had a blocked extra point so
- 5:06there was kind of just there were things all over the place
- 5:09that, you know, we're, I think good things and things you can
- 5:13build off of and things that you just kind of look at and scratch
- 5:15your head and say, how do we let that happen?
- 5:17Well, let's start there with the thing that probably scratched
- 5:20our head. The most Has kind of a
- 5:21regression of the defense on Saturday, but it wasn't in all
- 5:25areas. And let's be honest, Brian it
- 5:28was really only one area, is really only one player, one
- 5:32player, one area and it's the one player Brian mentioned that
- 5:36he knew he was banged up. He was hoping we did see, and
- 5:39that was his. He have an anaconda.
- 5:41I mean over 300 yards in and you look at those numbers, I have
- 5:45someone who was out of town. So I hope you fan say what
- 5:49happened like oh my God, they ran.
- 5:51Over some, like, do they didn't run all over us?
- 5:53Like they had eight plays and he's like what do you mean?
- 5:56I'm like eight play. They had.
- 5:58He had eight carries of 10 or more yards. 242 yards on those
- 6:03plays, that's it, that's insane. We're sitting here is I'm is I'm
- 6:09diving this on Saturday night watching some of the late games
- 6:12watching. Guardians of the Galaxy, I look
- 6:16at the other 26 carries and it's like 78 yards but All those
- 6:22eight carries over, six of the eight turned in touchdowns.
- 6:26And then the other two, essentially flip the field
- 6:29significantly on each time. And I mean, so Brian, say what
- 6:33it is? Say, what?
- 6:33It was up front. What we saw that big regression
- 6:36Yeah. I mean we had some run fit
- 6:38issues throughout the game particularly when they went with
- 6:43the split Zone and the power especially when they went power
- 6:47to the heavy side that really gave us some fits in terms of
- 6:51getting to our run fits and you said it, you know, eight carries
- 6:57242 yards. The other 26 carries 78 total.
- 7:02So we're looking at under three a carry except for the bait and
- 7:06Other eight are for the game are 30 yards, a carry.
- 7:12And so that's that's a, that's a big that's a big swing there.
- 7:18But I mean I think what we're seeing is that you know will is
- 7:21still a rotating cast of characters and that was probably
- 7:24the most inconsistent play in the game in the running game you
- 7:29know we saw guys getting some some bad fits little slow to get
- 7:33reads things like that, you know, her RV or strong so that
- 7:37bent Beyond Murray was playing some nickel playing outside
- 7:40more. He took some bad angles in run
- 7:44support down the field. So, I mean there's a couple
- 7:48things there but I'm going to run through the kind of seven
- 7:52plays that kind of change. Change the game for the Hokies
- 7:55here. All right.
- 7:57Before we get into the seven plays big announcement today,
- 8:00you hit me. Pop me on the depth chart.
- 8:04Essentially, the guy we expected to be starting.
- 8:05It will is back this week in Allen Tisdale.
- 8:08So and I know you were saying to me, we know what Tisdale is, we
- 8:15know what Tisdale can do. And that's a bigger thing, where
- 8:18we saw, what Brian's gonna discuss here with some of the
- 8:21will linebackers. We hope to not see because he
- 8:24has been practicing, she probably is going to be in game
- 8:27shape. Yeah, he's been on the scout
- 8:30team, so he's definitely in game shape.
- 8:32And, you know, he's obviously been here since the, you know,
- 8:36the new regime arrived. So he should have a good
- 8:39understanding of of the defense even though he doesn't
- 8:42necessarily have those game reps yet.
- 8:44So the, I mean, the question this point is that, you know,
- 8:48it's he going to be full bore this week.
- 8:50Is he going to be on a pitch count?
- 8:51You know what, that's going to, what's that going to look like?
- 8:53But in terms of having a guy that has a combination, Ation of
- 8:58talent and experience. There's really no one better for
- 9:02that position on the roster right now.
- 9:04So hopefully that we see some uptick there.
- 9:06But yeah, let's get into it. We the first play that we that
- 9:10we're looking at here is a 38-yard touchdown split Zone.
- 9:16We saw Kendricks kind of lose his Gap and that resulted in the
- 9:22entire right side. Kind of getting blocked by that
- 9:24tight end that's coming back across the formation and That
- 9:28created a huge hole that kind of put guys in the secondary on
- 9:32islands. And you get a guy that is as
- 9:35good as a band of Canada is at the second and third level of
- 9:38the defense and it's a recipe for disaster me and you stared
- 9:42at this play for about 10 minutes.
- 9:45Looking at it today because we're still trying to figure out
- 9:48what the line call was, because Kendricks is, what did you say?
- 9:53You was in three, right? He was in a to why he actually
- 9:56shifted to a 3 I don't know if that was like a it's a belly
- 10:01check. I mean sometimes you have that
- 10:03when you kind of read that a split Zone might be coming.
- 10:06I don't know if that that's what the check was but they didn't do
- 10:11it every time that we saw split zone so I'm not sure exactly if
- 10:16that's what is that if that was the call and then I told you
- 10:19what kept catching my eye was he and J Griffin on the same line.
- 10:25Maybe that's always a, that's a huge giveaway that something
- 10:29went wrong. Because if you're going down the
- 10:31same line, there is somewhere open.
- 10:34And you know, why are you pursuing the exact same lineal
- 10:39like right? Well the other thing is that you
- 10:43know when Kendricks jumped outside was like that looks a
- 10:45little funky but he jumped outside and then he didn't
- 10:48attack the tight end. Or the end of the line of
- 10:54scrimmage, the way you think he would.
- 10:56If that was what he was supposed to be doing.
- 10:59So he still had bad technique even if he did the right, you
- 11:03know, the right slant there. So I'm not sure exactly what was
- 11:06going on there. But he kind of took himself out
- 11:08of the play because he took himself out of the play that
- 11:11also took Griffin out of the play.
- 11:12And that whole side of the defense was kind of wide open
- 11:16and let a band. A can of kind of get up there in
- 11:19a second level and like me and you looking like you said, if he
- 11:23Just attacked the tight end. He likely pushes the tight end
- 11:26because of the size, differential, Kendricks 295 that
- 11:28tightens about 140. He likely pushes him right into
- 11:31that run Lane. Where nothing else he sees you?
- 11:34At least, pinch that that laying down.
- 11:36Where is he? Either has to go through its
- 11:38lower more hesitant, or he has to kind of Bounce Down that puts
- 11:43it back in and play for Griffin there.
- 11:45So, yeah, you know, you hate that, you know, we said the
- 11:49second one there, another split Zone, this one looks Like Panay
- 11:54loses his Gap, trying to, you know, he kind of doesn't get his
- 11:58head across like you want him to and then he looks like he kind
- 12:02of panics undercuts and then it doesn't quite get to the ball.
- 12:07Carrier wide open Rush Lane for a band of Canada.
- 12:12And next thing, you know you know another big gain.
- 12:16You made it sound. When you talk to me about that
- 12:18plan, we look at you said, he knew he did something wrong.
- 12:22And instead of Crossing the face, he just tried to shoot Gap
- 12:26and as soon as he did that and what it's that pressing and
- 12:29technique, right? Like not trusting your because
- 12:33you said if he just would have went with him it's not a 28-yard
- 12:37game. Well he probably gets eaten him.
- 12:39He didn't crosses the the the lineman's face like you would
- 12:43like them to but instead of like just continuing to press the
- 12:46blocker And kind of hold that ground, he tries to shoot
- 12:51Underneath Him, and doesn't make the play.
- 12:54If he probably holds that he probably gets some help because
- 12:57you had Kendricks that had beat his man, it was coming from the
- 13:00backside there. So, I mean there was a chance
- 13:03that, you know, you get a tackle for loss there and if he don't
- 13:06you at least give your your guys in the secondary some more time
- 13:09where they can get into a better position to make a play at the
- 13:12second level there. But unfortunately didn't see
- 13:16that. And that was a that was a blitz
- 13:17call. That was kind of a way from the
- 13:18point of attack. So I mean, it was a good call
- 13:22relative to the defensive call, it kind of put us in up in a bad
- 13:25spot from Jump Street. So that hurt.
- 13:30But then we also heard ourselves and not kind of doing what we
- 13:33need to do there. Yeah.
- 13:34And that was a 28 yard where they were on their side of the
- 13:38field. I think about it that 25 or 30.
- 13:41So, it immediately flip the field.
- 13:43So, it wasn't like Like the none of these happened with the
- 13:46exception of what we'll talk about.
- 13:47Oh, hello, Robbie bad, Foo. We have not talked to Robbie
- 13:53since Friday. I don't know what that means.
- 13:54Also, good evening Lavar with us on Facebook, but like, every
- 14:00play was of crucial. And then the next one is that
- 14:0317-yard run. Which again, is it?
- 14:10It's like the head took over in the instincts, didn't?
- 14:15For everybody, but the guy trying to make a play.
- 14:19Yeah. I mean, 17-yard touchdown run.
- 14:20He'll split Zone on Third and two cold Nelson gets there.
- 14:25Has him in the backfield, it's going to be a loss of one yard,
- 14:28got him wrapped up and then all of a sudden, you know, is he
- 14:33keeps his legs grinding Nelson, gets a little bit of a bump,
- 14:38kind of falls off the tackle. And next thing you know, is he
- 14:41scampered into the end zone, but there's others that were around
- 14:46the ball carrier. I think we're a little too
- 14:47content to let Nelson. In kind of finish that tackle
- 14:49solo, you know, Kendricks was getting kind of blocked, I think
- 14:54either Kendricks are Fugu were kind of getting blocked around
- 14:57the the point of attack. So you kind of understand that
- 15:00but you know, I think Dax and ianto were a little more
- 15:04hesitant that I'd like them to be of getting in there to kind
- 15:06of finish that tackle off and then ultimately, you know, the
- 15:10tackles broken and he scampered into the end zone.
- 15:13So, you know, that's one where you're holding them to 3 and all
- 15:16of a sudden they get 7. And that is that, you know,
- 15:21those little things were the differences in the game.
- 15:26What about the net? I did not.
- 15:27Look at the next one with you. I, we had a break up for a few
- 15:30minutes. Where was this one at?
- 15:33This was obviously after one of the bad puns.
- 15:36Yeah, this is the right after the bad punt.
- 15:39This is what happens when you're effective with your bread and
- 15:42butter. In this case they were running
- 15:44split Zone, very effectively hitting us for kind of big gash
- 15:49ashes and you see a start to kind of flow and follow that
- 15:53will. Now you've got the guy that's
- 15:54coming across the formation and normally kicking out on the
- 15:57backside. Well now you got him sneaking
- 15:59out into the flat catching a little dump off from Keating
- 16:03slovis and he's goes up the up, the field for a very large gain
- 16:07immediately goes from, you know, short field, to field goal range
- 16:11in one play and and that's kind of that's one you hate to see
- 16:17but you understand it because When you're having when you're
- 16:20effective in one thing, you can kind of work off that encounter
- 16:23off that and do some other things that give the defense and
- 16:26Fitz. Yeah.
- 16:28Now the next one we did look at together and this goes back to,
- 16:32if Bud Foster's to always preach it there, guys, when they're
- 16:36young their head and their feet, don't talk to each other and
- 16:40this next play. This next touchdown run, it was
- 16:43a sign of it in for Jaden Keller.
- 16:45It makes sense. Jaden Keller.
- 16:46As you mentioned, Ron a couple times to me.
- 16:49And when we're on here, it's the first time he's played this
- 16:52position. And when something, when this
- 16:56plan to play like this happens, you get when you look at it and
- 17:00you see it live on gated, I'll he didn't do the right thing and
- 17:02then when you look at it like we did, I look at it five times.
- 17:05You that means you look at probably 15 by yourself before
- 17:09we got together, just kind of say what it is.
- 17:14Yeah, I mean, you know, there's a 27-yard touchdown run, was
- 17:16just a Zone play, you know, pretty straightforward.
- 17:20There was no window dressing here.
- 17:21There was no extra crap extra Gap created.
- 17:24Either the split Zone, this should have been a pretty easy
- 17:28read Keller's a little slow getting his run.
- 17:31Re he doesn't mirror, those own steps and little hesitant with
- 17:40you getting that read and making that move towards the line of
- 17:43scrimmage. And now, all of a sudden you've
- 17:45got, you know, a lot bigger area for that running back to kind of
- 17:49scoot through, and the guard that came up to get the block
- 17:53actually, didn't do a very good. Good job of getting him, but he
- 17:55got because of the slow read. He only had to get a piece of
- 17:59him. That was enough to get Izzy up
- 18:01the Chute and into the end zone. Yeah.
- 18:04But I think a big thing that I'm gonna I'll make with this and
- 18:07then the guy we're going to talk about on the next one.
- 18:10Is The tape right? How much tape now Keller
- 18:16McDonald's Lawson all have roughly regardless whether they
- 18:19move loss in a regardless of these guys are playing or
- 18:21different positions, how much that's going to help them.
- 18:25Not only this season because all the red shirts are burned for.
- 18:29There's no need to but for next season and those offseason film
- 18:33studies and seeing you hesitated right here.
- 18:36While I saw this. Remember you keep what you key
- 18:40in this case? Because if them To your point
- 18:43with Keller. If he follows his key again,
- 18:45it's still probably a gain. It's not the massive gains.
- 18:47And I think as me, and you looked at all of these and
- 18:50there's two more, we're going to talk about.
- 18:52Every single one of these could have been solid gains, not
- 18:57back-breaking game for the hoses.
- 18:59And when there's a game, that's essentially a two score game,
- 19:03that's what this is stopping. A handful of these is a flip and
- 19:08a potential win for the Hokies. All right, let's talk about the
- 19:11next one. Unfortunately came right after
- 19:14the Caleb Smith. Fumble where Hokies have
- 19:16momentum. What do we see on this one?
- 19:19We're tomorrow. It was.
- 19:21You could tell for tomorrow, Connor was frustrated with that
- 19:23lady. Hit at the end to get an extra
- 19:2515 form. Yeah, I think, you know, they
- 19:28had kind of, you know, turn things around, had rallied a
- 19:31little bit, it had a good run of where they were, you know,
- 19:34fairly solid and fairly sure in the in their run fits and in
- 19:38the, on the defense as a whole. And you get the sudden Change
- 19:42and then you get 39 yard run right after that Sudden Change
- 19:47and this is just a power. Oh, there was some there's some
- 19:50decent fits but McDonald loses the edge.
- 19:54He kind of gets squared up by the full-back and Armani gets
- 19:59caught looking inside, and we lose containment, and then you
- 20:03tack on 15 yards for the late hit.
- 20:07And again it was one of those. It got them deep and that's what
- 20:11every play we've discussed here tonight has either been a
- 20:14touchdown run. Or it's been a flipping of the
- 20:19fields there immediately in field goal range.
- 20:22Even the, the 28-yard we talked about with Pinay, they're out of
- 20:26field goal range, but if you hold them, they're going to
- 20:28punch you. Deep likely you're not going to
- 20:30have great starting field position.
- 20:32So, like everything was crippling it wasn't like, here's
- 20:34a 28-yard, run from the five. You still have some things to
- 20:40work with. Yeah.
- 20:41All right. Well, let's talk about the last
- 20:43one. The big little bit.
- 20:44This is the backbreaker, this is the one that Killed.
- 20:48Go ahead. Yeah, this is the 80 yard
- 20:51touchdown run. It's another Power.
- 20:55This was not really a great snap by any of the linebackers except
- 20:59for Jenkins. But the biggest problem is that
- 21:04no one is kind of following the pulling guard here and that
- 21:09allows him to tee off on Connor. And instead of that block is
- 21:16designed to To go for a linebacker.
- 21:19He's not supposed to be getting to that next, next level and
- 21:23they're traveling at our last line of defense there.
- 21:27And, you know, they did a lot in the second half with kind of
- 21:32having those two tight ends and then shifting them across the
- 21:35formation before the snap. And I think that kind of gave us
- 21:39a little bit of a trouble with the adjustments.
- 21:42I mean this case you'd like to have seen McDonald.
- 21:46There was a When the guard pull, there was a down block, you
- 21:50would have liked to seen McDonald, kind of shoot
- 21:53underneath where the pulling guard is coming, across behind
- 21:58that down block, and try to make that play in the backfield,
- 22:01because he's the unblocked man in this case.
- 22:06So, I mean, that would have been what you like to see.
- 22:08He was a little bit late, kind of, kind of reading that he took
- 22:12about three steps towards the line of scrimmage and a Away
- 22:17from the play before he started redirecting towards where that
- 22:21play was going. You like to have seen him, you
- 22:23know, that one that one step and then say, okay that's a down
- 22:26block. Okay, that's a pulling guard and
- 22:29then he knows what to do from there.
- 22:33There's a little bit slow on that.
- 22:35So again there county is the breakdown of each play, you get
- 22:39a chance to go back, listen to this segment.
- 22:43We are trying to work to where we can show the video on the
- 22:46screen. There's a lot to go through with
- 22:49this because there's obviously there's rights and stuff like
- 22:53that but hopefully in the future we can have these breakdowns
- 22:57like this obviously little easier in the offseason because
- 23:01we need to plan an episode 2 and 3 weeks ahead.
- 23:03Brian can find film out there that Already been distributed to
- 23:08copyright, can't come after us. All right, well, let's keep
- 23:12talking a little bit more. Let's talk about the defense of
- 23:14line. I mean, obviously we heard a lot
- 23:16of things. There were some guys, making
- 23:17errors. Big thing on defensive line on
- 23:20Saturday was, was garbage being out.
- 23:22It doesn't even matter him being.
- 23:24He is the best offensive lineman.
- 23:27And him being out hurts regardless.
- 23:31Yeah, I mean, he's always a big, he's a big case here for us.
- 23:34He's the veteran in that room having him out kind of takes
- 23:38both our top end Talent off, but also kind of a veteran
- 23:42leadership in that, in that group, across that line.
- 23:46So it's kind of a double whammy, in that case, Yeah.
- 23:50Now the offensive line, not all bad.
- 23:52I mean they did get five and a half tackles for loss, we had 11
- 23:55total which is just to think 11 tackles for loss and you still
- 23:59got 300 yards, ran on. You is just insane to think that
- 24:04in, you know, guys made, please don't get us wrong.
- 24:07There were some errors, but guys were making plays, but I'm going
- 24:09to tell you. Josh food is stood out there
- 24:12were times on a even a couple of those big runs where he was
- 24:15doing his job and collapsing. Collapsing, the defense of the
- 24:19offensive line of pit, and of all the guys, I think he in my
- 24:27eyes, he's taking bigger strides in this system.
- 24:33Than anyone thus far. And it's maybe because he's a
- 24:36little bit younger and not, as a not been here as long.
- 24:41What about you run? I mean, I think it's that I
- 24:43think it's also that he's a little bit more in terms of the
- 24:48prototypical size of what they're looking for.
- 24:51I think he's a little bit more in that mold and you know, he's
- 24:56I think he's cleaned up a little bit.
- 24:58So I think he's you're seeing him have a little bit more motor
- 25:01this year than we've seen in the past.
- 25:03And I think that's that's helping him out a lot.
- 25:06He's a he's doing a good job of trusting his technique and then
- 25:11using his physicality to make the play.
- 25:13Is there. Let's talk about Nelson to
- 25:16because I think he had a he had a few rough plays in this game
- 25:19but he also showed that he could hold up at that defensive end
- 25:24position for a little bit extra. Extra time here.
- 25:28Has he got a whole lot more snaps in that game than he would
- 25:31have normally? Yes.
- 25:33So you know, you like what you see, you need to clean up a few
- 25:37things but there's something to kind of build on there.
- 25:39Yeah it's all the building. It's all see.
- 25:42Especially every time you see a young guy, make a good play like
- 25:46with the Nelson as he was coming in pursuing.
- 25:48He got dizzy. Yes.
- 25:50He The Tackle was broken but the reality is you go back Brian.
- 25:54He had to tackle broken but reality is as long as he stood
- 25:57there, which was about to Second count.
- 26:00There should have been two to three.
- 26:01Other Hokies finishing that. Walk with them.
- 26:05And that that, again, it's where we see well, the tackle broke
- 26:09you made a mistake in reality. No, he did everything right.
- 26:13His job is to get there. He's also a second-year player.
- 26:17Can he get stronger where maybe next year, year after he makes
- 26:21that play and he doesn't need help.
- 26:23He gets the got it. It's kind of like, what would
- 26:25way Vic says a lot. You know, they're still learning
- 26:27how to make those winning plays crew and I kind of think that
- 26:32that's part of it right there. Are you know, that play, We're
- 26:35Nelson is there and then he's not the that's that's, that's
- 26:38some of those winning plays that at Dwight talks about and a lot
- 26:42of what I've talked about. Those other big plays were kind
- 26:45of in that same vein guys, not trusting their technique, guys,
- 26:51trying to, you know, panicking and then trying to be a hero
- 26:55because they feel like they're not where they need to be.
- 26:59Yeah. All right, let's flip obviously
- 27:01in the secondary younger. Had to step up Saturday.
- 27:04Dorian, strong out again, and even though he's listed at the
- 27:08top of the depth chart, I mean, I'm really wondering if they're
- 27:13just putting in there just for show and if he's going to be a
- 27:17long because you would think with a hand injury and this is
- 27:21coming, I'm a Niners fan. Jimmy, Ward broke his hand on
- 27:24the opening kickoff. Hearse Carolina, literally he
- 27:26had his surgery. Yesterday their feed them for
- 27:28his cast on Saturday. They don't anticipate him
- 27:31playing this week because just no practice but they anticipate
- 27:36him playing next week versus the Chiefs.
- 27:38I'm one of us a little more with Dorian or if it's one of those
- 27:41things. Where is he physically spent
- 27:43this season? He's only played four games and
- 27:46it's like, listen, some of the best stuff you do is with your
- 27:50hands. He has a good press, he uses his
- 27:52hands, very wisely, is it one of those things?
- 27:55Where if we put you back on the field and you can't use your
- 27:58hand, does it take some of your best aspects out?
- 28:01Yeah I mean that's the big question mark at this point, we
- 28:03don't know exactly what that injury entails until we do is
- 28:07how it kind of hard to speculate.
- 28:10You know why it's keeping him out for an extended period of
- 28:12time and you know we had you know DJ Harvey was out as well.
- 28:16So we had kind of the youth movement out there.
- 28:21We had Delaney Hugh Johnson, their use on man Stroman playing
- 28:28boat because of the lack of death I heard.
- 28:31Prostate today, he played field and Boundary safety, which means
- 28:34tomorrow is coming up. So strumming playing a spot,
- 28:38he's not accustomed to because of again, the depth issues.
- 28:44Something we've heard a long time, but of those guys, you
- 28:46mentioned. I mean, is it still is mess?
- 28:49I think Mansoor Delaney has shown Yeah, he's showing how
- 28:54well it looked like you know cam Johnson had some good good snaps
- 28:57in there as well. So you know we're seeing some of
- 29:01the depth get created now with with some of these young guys
- 29:05combined with with the veterans on the team and that's only
- 29:08going to be you know good going forward but also good obviously
- 29:12heading into next season as well.
- 29:14When you know a lot of these guys are going to be counted on
- 29:16for a much larger role on the defense.
- 29:21Abso-freakin'-lutely. All right, let's flip it.
- 29:24Let's flip it to the offensive side of the ball in brine.
- 29:28I mean you, this is my feeling, you can tell me how you feel, I
- 29:32think this was the best game for this offense, considering the
- 29:35quality of Defense we played no one nor doozies.
- 29:38Pedigree pit was coming in as a top 30 Total Defense going into
- 29:42the game and we do we have some three and outs and where we
- 29:47looked a little inefficient. Yeah.
- 29:49But do we have some good try? Love's in some big plays, yeah.
- 29:55Yeah, I mean, this was as good of a offensive output as we've
- 29:59seen all season. This wasn't like Boston College,
- 30:04where we got a lot of short Fields early in the game and
- 30:08then we kind of rested on a big lead as a result of that.
- 30:13You know we had to earn a lot of these yards other than the
- 30:17blocked punt for a touchdown. You know we were driving the
- 30:21field on this team, you get those points.
- 30:24It's so that's a difference in you know, the play calls I think
- 30:29were I haven't had a big problem with the play calls this year
- 30:32but I feel like there was a better slightly better flow this
- 30:35week wondering if Brad, Glenn being in the box there with
- 30:40Tyler, Bowen was kind of a benefit for him seeing some
- 30:44things a little differently and helping with that flow.
- 30:48But I mean honestly the biggest one is getting malachite Thomas
- 30:53back in this life. Yes.
- 30:56I mean you take a look at Malachi and just to Staffing.
- 31:00Dated, give them a fair amount of run.
- 31:03I mean, 15 carries 84 yards. He went over five and a half of
- 31:08carry. He had a touchdown.
- 31:09He broke a big, 29, yard run. He broke some other ones.
- 31:13And I mean, just kind of looking you talked about his vision.
- 31:20And what we saw a couple times that Vision.
- 31:22He saw the whole he went, right? And in some of them weren't big
- 31:26games, they were like three and four yards but now it's second
- 31:31and six. Okay.
- 31:32Do we want to run the ball again?
- 31:33Do we want to take a shower? We're at a, we're at a play
- 31:36called level. We can do anything we want.
- 31:39The goal is to gain positive yards, but if, you know, if the
- 31:42safety Peaks up or something right, let's take a shot in the
- 31:46other part about him and it's just no use.
- 31:49Noticed a vision when he hits a whole his legs don't stop.
- 31:53He has legs do not stop. Yep.
- 31:55And it's awesome to see. Yeah, he's, you know, I said it
- 32:00a little bit last. We were talking about it, he's
- 32:02stealing some extra yards, right?
- 32:04Yeah. You know, he's the guy that
- 32:07turns that three yarder into a six yarder at five yard into an
- 32:11eight yarder, and he did that all game and, you know, his
- 32:16vision immediately has helped this this offense and the
- 32:21offensive line look better. I don't know if they were more
- 32:23confident, you know, having Malachi Them.
- 32:29But, you know, the holes were there earlier and he found them
- 32:33and hit them and got some positive yards out them most of
- 32:37the time. He carried the ball, you know,
- 32:38there wasn't, you know, we didn't really have the negative
- 32:41plays that we've been accustomed to.
- 32:42We didn't really have as many of those, you know, 0 and 1 yarders
- 32:46that we've been accustomed to. There was some solid first down
- 32:49gains but now we weren't out there.
- 32:51You know, getting chunk plays a lot.
- 32:53Now, you know, there were some, but we weren't getting
- 32:55consistent chunk plays but we were getting enough.
- 32:57Enough where we could effectively run the rest of our
- 32:59offense, except for that one little period in the in the
- 33:02third quarter. They're 100% now with having him
- 33:06come back, obviously Keyshawn Kings roll goes down, he only
- 33:10had five carries what a couple receptions, but he broke the big
- 33:14one and we body blow body blow body blow, and we got down the
- 33:19field to the 19 and they ran that little plate of him on the
- 33:22inside and that lane opened up and food. 19 yards touchdown.
- 33:31I think, maybe it's gameplay we didn't see him as much.
- 33:33We did see even Grant wealth benefit that he had some good
- 33:36drawers and some good read option where he he ran because
- 33:41the Run was effective when there's a threat when they when
- 33:48you're threatening with both areas there, then both areas can
- 33:52be more effective if you're not ever running your quarterback,
- 33:55then the read I mean, no, no one's keying on the quarterback.
- 33:58We've Ran the quarterback enough, where he was an
- 34:02effective key and our running back was effective enough where
- 34:06when our quarterback kept it, there was some room to maneuver.
- 34:12So, very nice on that side of the ball now.
- 34:16Brian offensive line had a little New Blood.
- 34:19We saw Brody that it's Imran and Brody Meadows.
- 34:22Got some run. And then we saw a lot more of
- 34:25Braylon more this week as well. And let's talk about that play.
- 34:30We looked at and it showed you why he has been getting hyped
- 34:34and white very soon. I think he's the starter, the
- 34:389-yard, touchdown run from Malachi Thomas.
- 34:44Do you think man? Because that was Yeah.
- 34:50I mean Braylon completely collapsed his side of the line
- 34:55of scrimmage collapsed. Yes into up to a point wires
- 35:00we're watching it I'm like man that's good.
- 35:03He's wiping out and bras like Silas was laid his blog.
- 35:06He missed it but the damn Gap was so big.
- 35:09Where Braylon had cleared? It was like Malik, I still had
- 35:12room to get right up in there. Yeah that was the big thing.
- 35:15It looks like Silas was trying to kind of Step In I think he
- 35:19was expecting gallery to kind of double team with him and he just
- 35:23kind of lost his leverage in that block before Gallo got
- 35:26there and but it did I mean, you know, it didn't matter because
- 35:32like I said Braylon it collapse the d-tackle so much, there was
- 35:35just a huge hole on that side of the offense.
- 35:38So we're seeing those young guys.
- 35:40And again, when it's like, is this weird hand-in-hand?
- 35:43Malachi comes back to younger, guys.
- 35:45Get run and don't get us wrong. There was a good run play.
- 35:49Jesse Hansen made a good play on one of those good, as you said,
- 35:52it was a wrap Brian where he wraps her no more wrapped he got
- 35:58up field wrapped and I think that was Malachi's biggest run
- 36:02was when they did that, but again, it's Little Steps.
- 36:06It's things that we heard with Coach Rudolph last week, talked
- 36:10about. All right.
- 36:11Let's now talk about Grant Wells because I think if anyone from
- 36:16the better running game, he At the most I think his best game
- 36:21to date 25. 447, 277 yards, One Touch one pick.
- 36:28The pick was a Hail Mary at the end of a half.
- 36:31Watch that out and really probably only two or three balls
- 36:37thrown with risk two of them. I notice is when we were down 16
- 36:41trying to push the ball, Yep. Not many like maybe a couple bad
- 36:47passes here and there but not I don't know the words.
- 36:52I'm trying to look for here. Not those the hell why are you
- 36:56harassing that? Yeah we tried to force a post
- 36:59into into cover to that was really his worst.
- 37:03His worst throw, everything else was pretty you know pretty
- 37:07decent or at least a calculated risk.
- 37:10Definitely his best game to date.
- 37:12Got through progressions a lot more.
- 37:14Distantly, and I think that's, as you said, it's a product of a
- 37:19more efficient running game. This is, this is what Grant
- 37:21Wells can be when he doesn't feel like he has to do
- 37:26everything when he's not responsible for 75, 80 % of the
- 37:31offensive production. And that's going to be a good
- 37:35thing going forward because you know, like I said, we that's
- 37:38probably the best defensive front.
- 37:40We're going to see the rest of the season may be NC.
- 37:44State. They're probably right there
- 37:49with them and see stead better linebacker core though.
- 37:51Yeah, that's that's, that's kind of a different stuff that pits a
- 37:55shit line better. Well, they're a solid group.
- 37:58NC State salute allowed back. Yeah, I think that's the scary
- 38:01part. You mentioned the progression
- 38:03for on. Do you know how many passes
- 38:06running back? Scott of those 25 completions.
- 38:10How many eight? Okay, okay, a couple we're set.
- 38:15We're set plays. I think like, a couple of them
- 38:18were like Keyshawn and chance motioning out of the back of
- 38:22that was the first read. But you talk about getting
- 38:25through progressions, if he's getting there and we're getting
- 38:27checked Downs. We're not forcing.
- 38:28It were gaining. And I mean, the passes didn't
- 38:32amount to a lot. They only amounted to eight, you
- 38:34know, eight receptions for 23 yards, but Two yards is better
- 38:41than a sack and it's better than throwing a pig into a bad
- 38:45situation, right? Yep.
- 38:47Again, we got to start with the little things.
- 38:50If we can, if we can get the little things done,
- 38:52consistently, well, then we can kind of move on to some of the
- 38:55bigger things. Yeah, real quick, wide receiver
- 38:59room. We've already mentioned, what
- 39:01happened with Caleb. We're not talking about that
- 39:03play again. Caleb Smith 9 receptions 152.
- 39:08He was the ACC wide. Receiver of the week, got a
- 39:10little banged again. I mean, if you want to talk
- 39:15about toughness and as we will make a joke here, grit, I think
- 39:19Caleb Smith has that because coach said today cables, good,
- 39:24too. Because this weekend, and he's
- 39:27showing out, and I'm trying to think, does he have a year of
- 39:30Eligibility left? I think so.
- 39:38I could be wrong. Sure.
- 39:39See the whole the whole covid shit just.
- 39:43Yeah I still don't know how they're classifying some folks
- 39:46because at first I thought they were going to like just retread
- 39:49the year that they were on as the Covey year but a lot of
- 39:52times they just kind of advanced the year and then they're giving
- 39:55them a bonus here. So in this case, Caleb first
- 39:59year was Nineteen. So if they count the covid year,
- 40:03he would he could come back next year which I kind of hope he
- 40:06does come. Next year, let's talk about your
- 40:10boy again, run. Daquan right?
- 40:14Had himself. Another day ban.
- 40:17I put on the timeline on Twitter, man.
- 40:19He is a walking talking. First down it, is that way if
- 40:23you need a first down, and look for that man, look for that man.
- 40:26Which slowly but surely, he's gonna start drawing more
- 40:29attention, more attention, and you're going to have Smith
- 40:32getting open, you're going to have some run Lanes there.
- 40:36I do want to say this one of the best passes of the game was that
- 40:3943 yard bomb to Dwayne Lofton. And I thought somebody, I think
- 40:45Ali put up was this a good throw or a great throw a great catch.
- 40:49And I think Dwight went up there and said, great catch really
- 40:52good throat because they both were because Grant was on the
- 40:55opposite side of the field, right?
- 40:56He was not he was on the opposite.
- 40:59Hash when he jumped that ball into the end zone and go ahead.
- 41:04I was just going to say, I mean, if you talk about it it was a
- 41:06good to Great. Throw it was.
- 41:07You had to have a strong arm to get it there it wasn't a perfect
- 41:10throw. Yeah, I know you.
- 41:12Like to see him place, it probably a little bit more out
- 41:15in front, but from where he was, where he was throwing it, kind
- 41:19of where he was coming off. It wasn't his primary read, he
- 41:23saw it there, he got it there, I'll take it all day, and I will
- 41:30too and give give Loft and credit for coming back to the
- 41:34ball and making the play on the ball.
- 41:36We saw that burn has numerous times already this year.
- 41:38It finally Burns someone else. All right, Brian you.
- 41:42You kind of caused some controversy Saturday after the
- 41:46game with your tweet? No way you how dare you say that
- 41:51prai has got to get better at balancing game management and
- 41:55defensive how dare you say that? How dare you critique him now I
- 42:00got it from both sides. I was told that I wasn't
- 42:05critiquing pride enough and then the Kings told that.
- 42:09How dare I say that he wasn't calling a Defense, which is what
- 42:15I was saying, at all. What I was saying is that, there
- 42:17were moments in the game where because of game management,
- 42:23because of the little things that it takes to be a head coach
- 42:27that can, you know, cost your team.
- 42:32You know, there were some moments where we probably left
- 42:34some points on the field. Yeah.
- 42:36And you know, I'm not saying that I blame prot like he's
- 42:41still getting accustomed. I'm to being a head coach and
- 42:44he's getting accustomed to being a head coach while also calling
- 42:47defensive plays and and being more in tune with what's going
- 42:55on with the defense than he is with the whole game.
- 42:58So you got to kind of stay in that mindset.
- 43:01Understand? All right, well, I'm calling the
- 43:04defense, but once I'm not calling the defense, I've got to
- 43:06make sure that everything that I need to handle from a time
- 43:11management, clock management. It making sure that it wasn't
- 43:16just you know us with the ball. It was also okay.
- 43:18Well if they get the ball back how are we handling?
- 43:23This are we calling time out here?
- 43:25It's these little situational things that I think when you're
- 43:28caught up in the moment of calling the defense that
- 43:32sometimes it's hard to keep an eye on those other things.
- 43:35Whether that means we need, you know, somebody else that kind of
- 43:39is funneling him more that information more.
- 43:42Only. So he's more aware or what but
- 43:48and I'm not saying take his duties the way.
- 43:50Now I'm saying I need to see a little bit more progress on that
- 43:53front. Just to say that I wouldn't like
- 43:55to see him be of be a head coach without the the calling duties
- 44:00and see what Marv has. Yeah, now you did suggest
- 44:04passing it off, but that seems that that's not happening this
- 44:07year. I listened to the press for
- 44:08about an hour and a half ago. And basically he said That's not
- 44:12our plan. This year are playing this year
- 44:14is I'm calling it. Chris is learning.
- 44:17Chris's basically, Christians going through the motions of
- 44:22what a defensive coordinator, does every week.
- 44:25The only thing I'm doing is calling the games on Saturdays,
- 44:28he's made, he's making the own field coaching, essentially what
- 44:31we do, what they do. So again, they sound like
- 44:35they're sticking to that. Now, it did sound like prai has
- 44:40basically said into said, to his mind And when this season ends,
- 44:44I'm done. I'm not hauling more.
- 44:46I'm going to turn it over to Chris because I think that's
- 44:48something where as a coach, he knows he has to continuously
- 44:51evaluate his staff and he needs to know.
- 44:54All right, if I give Chris 24 years of calling these plays, is
- 44:57he still our guy here? If that kind of the, that's kind
- 45:02of the pieces that this the way he was mentioned it, that's kind
- 45:05of the feel that I'm getting from him.
- 45:09Yeah, and I get that to a point. I appreciate that.
- 45:13You know he's sticking to the plan on that front.
- 45:15I wasn't necessarily saying I'd like to you know that has to
- 45:18happen for me to be happy. I was more saying I want to see
- 45:23some progress on him as a game manager to feel comfortable with
- 45:28him having the dog world. Well, that's where you hope an
- 45:31analyst he has an analyst working on that.
- 45:34Like how much time you spend there in the question?
- 45:38Is it over the next six games? Instead of him on the grease
- 45:43boards are potentially in those conversations that strictly
- 45:47Chris and then as they get back on the defensive side of the
- 45:50ball Chris in his ear. Here's how we're updating.
- 45:55Here's what we here's what we've been discussing then he makes
- 45:58the decisions of what place to call.
- 46:01Yep. All right, let's go with some
- 46:02other college. Football news and notes.
- 46:07One comes from the professional. World.
- 46:09But you'll understand a minute. Brian horse and got fired.
- 46:14I feel like this is like 8 months too late because that
- 46:19those boosters wanted him gone last February and I mean, you
- 46:22know, they were trying all sorts of shit to get him fired.
- 46:26Yeah I mean they were they were doing everything they could to
- 46:28get him out last year. He would have had to damn near
- 46:33win the SEC this year, for them to hit to have made it through
- 46:37the year. The fact that they obviously
- 46:40have not been the team that you want them to be, just made this
- 46:43a lot easier for them. Yeah, but he wasn't there to
- 46:48begin with, he wasn't because they screwed the pooch and down
- 46:53there. There is no real lady.
- 46:54In the boosters, have all the control but the issue with
- 46:58boosters, they have money, which is great.
- 47:00What? Most time.
- 47:01They don't have her clear Visions, I want to win.
- 47:05Oh my fuck everybody wants to win.
- 47:09You know it's one of those things where like with an add
- 47:13you can kind of filter a vision through one channel a collective
- 47:18team. When you've got you know a
- 47:22hundred plus multimillion-dollar boosters calling the shots.
- 47:26That's a that's a lot of voices in the room.
- 47:29It is it very much is all right. Another guy got fired from the
- 47:35professional ranks but I think anybody that follows football
- 47:38expects him to Be in college, perhaps next year, maybe the
- 47:41year after, and that's Matt rule gets fired from the Panthers
- 47:45after the 49ers, kick them around.
- 47:47I win some beer from a buddy at work.
- 47:49I mean, it's all good thing, sit here and look at the landscape
- 47:53of college football right now and Nebraska v.
- 47:56No, Georgia Tech being open Auburn be no Jim programs and
- 48:02big conferences that do have some Legacy Think he's gonna
- 48:07land there, even though he legitimately, I don't think it's
- 48:10an NFL contract like a Collegiate contract.
- 48:12He's literally getting eight hundred thousand dollars for the
- 48:14next like 48 months, which is just insane.
- 48:19So, does he really want to coach?
- 48:22Because if he does, so you asked me straight up right now.
- 48:25Nebraska, it probably would be the plate, based on what he did
- 48:29at Baylor, what? He did at Temple how he
- 48:31developed and built that culture?
- 48:34I think that's where he Lanes. Yeah.
- 48:36I mean, it wouldn't shock me at all for sure?
- 48:40You know, there's a lot of there's a be a lot of jobs open,
- 48:42but that feels like the most natural fit at this point.
- 48:49All right, we got one more thing.
- 48:50Brian, you put this in so I'll let you lead it because you
- 48:53gotta get your mind here. Yeah.
- 48:57We're just going to throw a big rest in peace out to Angela
- 49:01Lansbury. Absolute Legend stage and screen
- 49:06and small small screen as well. I'll scream big-screen bit,
- 49:10sticks and brooms are Bedknobs and Broomsticks men as a kid
- 49:14watching that movie for the first time.
- 49:17I, yeah. I mean I'm still a you know I'll
- 49:21throw on a episode of Murder. She Wrote from time to time one
- 49:28of the one of those shows you used to watch with like your
- 49:30grandparents back at day and now it's like all right I'm gonna
- 49:33throw it on. It's still a good time.
- 49:35It holds up a lot better than you think it would to say, yeah,
- 49:39well, I always did think about that.
- 49:40Used to come on what CBS Sundays at like 8:00.
- 49:44So if you can still remember, it kind of like the 420.
- 49:48It would be the The the 425 game then 60 minutes and then Murder
- 49:53She Wrote like my grandparents wouldn't change the channel.
- 49:55If we went over there on Sunday there was there was a time I
- 49:59think like a season 5 or something.
- 50:01They did like a Murder. She Wrote Magnum p.i. crossover
- 50:05where they did one episode, where she guest starred on
- 50:09character and then they did a continuation of that story where
- 50:12he was on her show. So it was kind of a pretty
- 50:16pretty cool crossover for the network, back in the day.
- 50:19So rest in peace to Antoine during any child of the 80s that
- 50:23did not have a feeling for that show.
- 50:27You know, you might have lost a lot of things.
- 50:31Yeah. All right, Ron, we got one more
- 50:32piece to hit here. Earlier this week we did lose a
- 50:36commit. My son Tink Kelly down Daniels
- 50:40County South Carolina, athlete cornerback whiteout decommitted,
- 50:45he commits about eight hours later.
- 50:50I am blessed to receive an offer from Clemson.
- 50:52Yep. Always shocked.
- 50:55Not shocked. So I was one that we were, we
- 50:58were you're high. Like unions are right?
- 51:02Yeah. And we knew we knew was under
- 51:03the radar. At the same time.
- 51:05It's like, you understand it, too.
- 51:07I mean, that's, that's, that's the in-state school for him.
- 51:11It's a, who was a team? Somebody said, to us this week,
- 51:15that's like the Blacksburg High of Clemson.
- 51:18It's like, literally, right there.
- 51:19Like yeah. Yeah.
- 51:20Like so it sucks. I mean, but those are the things
- 51:26that are going to happen. I'm interested to see if
- 51:29anything picks up in the next few days here.
- 51:33Do we throw any additional offers out or their players?
- 51:36That again, we again, we've been holding on or players.
- 51:40We potential have not committed will offers to that we now need
- 51:45committable. Yeah, also This week.
- 51:51I mean I'm shocked by this. Jonathan penix is going to
- 51:56announce this week down in Appomattox and I'm sort of
- 52:01shocked his top ten. He did not have us in there.
- 52:05Yeah, that was interesting. Kind of doesn't we'll see what
- 52:11that looks like at the end of the run but yeah.
- 52:17I mean, I wish I could ride as well.
- 52:20You know, when I saw it, I was just kind of shocked of Like,
- 52:25you know, we had we've already got one kid from mathematics in
- 52:28there and, you know, I don't know, it stinks because
- 52:34especially after we knew how hard we hit the state in where
- 52:37he ranks. Yeah, yeah, just sucks.
- 52:44Okay, let me do this. My can we are going to get now.
- 52:46We're gonna move on. Move on, close the book.
- 52:48We close the book on last week in Addy commit and then a kid
- 52:51that didn't put us in his top ten in steak so close.
- 52:55All right, before we get into Know, The Enemy looking at
- 52:58Miami. We are going to take a quick
- 53:00pause for a message from our digital Partners as we take a
- 53:04quick break. We'd like to tell you about

- 53:18Grassroots digital studio.com forward slash free Dash website,
- 53:23Dash report. Now back to the The episode.
- 53:26Alright Braun. Let's flip it here.
- 53:29No, the enemy Miami and let's start with the quarterback
- 53:33because it's been a roller coaster ride for Tyler Van Dyke
- 53:3764. 220 for from Glastonbury Connecticut, a four-star
- 53:42Prospect when he came out in 2020 composite and then, you
- 53:49know, started for them last year had a great season.
- 53:55Um, and then he got bench this year.
- 53:58So, you know, he came back last week and it looks like maybe
- 54:02he's the starter because he tore up, they lost a UNC but he went
- 54:07for almost 500 yards completed over 70% three, touchdowns one,
- 54:11pick of what you look at this year, is anything sort of why do
- 54:18you think they benched him? I'm confused by this, you know.
- 54:25To me it looks like just being somewhat ineffective with his
- 54:29footwork leading to some of the in accuracy that he was having
- 54:34in the game, okay? I mean, he's been very effective
- 54:37in the short, intermediate passing game on the hole in his
- 54:41career. He's got a strong arm, he's got
- 54:44the ability to deliver the ball on the run and and off platform,
- 54:49but he's not really a lead in the arm Talent category, he does
- 54:52lose some velocity when he's going Field.
- 54:55But you know, another part of his game is that athleticism.
- 55:00So he will be used on design runs he will use his legs to
- 55:03extend plays and sometimes look downfield to throw it sometimes.
- 55:07Look into running, just grab that first down, but he does
- 55:12still stare down his primary target from time to time.
- 55:14He'll bail on good Pockets when he's consistently pressured.
- 55:19So if we can get some pressure on him, we might get him to kind
- 55:22of bail on something that's there and and maybe get A tackle
- 55:25for loss, or a sack, or something like that.
- 55:27And like I said, the big thing is that his footwork if we can
- 55:30keep him moving in the pocket, that's the better for us.
- 55:33How much do you think this goes from?
- 55:34He was running, you know. Rhett's RPO / are a last year.
- 55:40We're crystal balls a little bit more to me.
- 55:42It's a little bit more of a pro-style.
- 55:44It's still multiple, but a little bit more Pro Concepts.
- 55:47Do you think that was affecting them?
- 55:48And where they decided to bench him and say get yourself, right?
- 55:54And then he comes back. And obviously, as back scheme.
- 55:57I could be that. Sometimes it's just clear your
- 55:59head. Make sure that, you know, you
- 56:01kind of see somebody else do it and sometimes that helps you
- 56:05process a little bit better. So it might be some of that.
- 56:09It might just be, hey, you giving us all?
- 56:12We know you can, we can get out of you this game.
- 56:14Go ahead and take this one off. We'll finish it out.
- 56:18We'll start again next week. All right, awesome.
- 56:21All right, so taking a look here, obviously his biggest
- 56:25Target and Jetta mately, his biggest Target, and probably his
- 56:30most reliable Target is will Mallory the 65 to 45 pound tight
- 56:35end. Mallory out of Jacksonville,
- 56:39Florida, Providence, High School composite for Star.
- 56:43When he came out. I mean, he looks like
- 56:47prototypical needs to be tight in you.
- 56:50How many years they would run a first or second-round tight end
- 56:53coming out of that place. Yeah, I mean, I mean this is a
- 56:57complete site in here. Great, hands runs good routes.
- 57:02He's definitely their primary stick, mover and safety valve.
- 57:06Use them a lot on drags and crossers quick outs, sticker
- 57:09outs, things like that. But he's also really deceptively
- 57:13good after the catch. So when he catches the ball, he
- 57:16can still make some things happen after the catch and they
- 57:20will occasionally send him deep up the seam as well.
- 57:22So they're going to take a shot with him.
- 57:23It's going to be at the scene. And so far this year, I mean,
- 57:28he's on Pace to easily outdo his career-high last year last year,
- 57:3430 receptions, 347 yards, 4 touchdowns this year already at
- 57:40twenty receptions, 242 yards, no touchdowns.
- 57:45And again, I wonder if that's a product of the new system, had a
- 57:48monster game, Monster game against you and see eight
- 57:53receptions 115. Yard.
- 57:55So unfortunately, he's sort of rounding into form right as we
- 58:00go play them, do you see him a lot?
- 58:04Does he play in line in he or she always going to kind of be
- 58:06Joker wingback. He's a little bit of everything.
- 58:11He's probably the blocking is probably his weakest area, but
- 58:16it's not at all a weakness. It's just, he doesn't excel at
- 58:21it the way he does, the other areas of his game.
- 58:25Got it. All right.
- 58:26Well, let's take a look next at kind of their lead running back.
- 58:30And that's going to be Henry Parish 510 190 Gould Florida.
- 58:36Originally a commit to Ole Miss came over in the portal to the
- 58:42Hurricanes here in 2022. You know, a consensus for Star
- 58:50guy for Star 93 top 170 player. Top 25 in Florida, top 15,
- 58:57running back. So he obviously has the
- 59:00accolades had the skill, had a ton of offers and I obviously
- 59:05chose Ole Miss to begin with. Had some run last year, you
- 59:11know, had over 500 yards and a few touchdowns.
- 59:16What's the tape showing this year?
- 59:18For him, kind of being the lead back for the hurricanes.
- 59:23Yeah, I mean, he's a running back that has really good
- 59:26patients. At the point of attack,
- 59:29especially on those own calls, they'll be running a lot of
- 59:32zone. So has a lot of patience to kind
- 59:35of wait for the blocks to get there and make his cut.
- 59:41He finished his runs hard but this is not the Home Run second
- 59:45and third level threat that we saw with the Z ab and a candle
- 59:50last week. So Yes, thank you.
- 59:56He's still got some ability at the second level but he's
- 59:59definitely more of a pick his way through at the point of
- 1:00:03attack and and get the yards that are there.
- 1:00:06He is more effective at catching the ball out of the backfield
- 1:00:09than we've seen recently and he has real good Vision when he's
- 1:00:12out there outside the hashes in space.
- 1:00:16They will split them out wide and use them as a wide receiver
- 1:00:19as well. So he has that in his wheelhouse
- 1:00:23but he can be disruptive with good penetration.
- 1:00:26So if we can get some of the same penetration we saw last
- 1:00:28week, if we can put that effort together this week, I think
- 1:00:32we'll be alright. You know, you mentioned about
- 1:00:35that, I mean he's got 13 receptions 101 yards already
- 1:00:38this year so they are using him a ton out of the backfield and
- 1:00:42on the ground. I mean, he's averaging right at
- 1:00:44548 of care. Three, 378 yards, four
- 1:00:47touchdowns but his last two games.
- 1:00:51He's kind of fell off a little bit combined versus Middle
- 1:00:56Tennessee. And UNC 25 carries for only 76
- 1:01:02yards, so he's kind of come back to earth after a solid game
- 1:01:07against am and obviously really tearing up the early season sort
- 1:01:12of lesser opponents. So I'm interested to see if
- 1:01:15they'll Take with them because behind him no one's really grab
- 1:01:19the reins per se. Running back room.
- 1:01:23You know, you get that is Franklin and Jalen night and you
- 1:01:28know they're averaging under four and a half, a carry that
- 1:01:33he's Franklin, does have five touchdowns so he's kind of maybe
- 1:01:35meet his role as the goal line short yardage back there so it's
- 1:01:38kind of interesting to see what they'll do now, let's flip over
- 1:01:42to the wide receiver room next Brian.
- 1:01:45And we want to look Look at Michael reading, the third
- 1:01:48freshman from Pensacola Florida, six to 202 pounds for star on
- 1:01:5524/7 Sports. A ton of offers all over the
- 1:01:59place. A top one, top 200 player
- 1:02:04another top 30 player in Florida.
- 1:02:06You know, you get a top 30 player in Florida.
- 1:02:10It's usually going to be really good.
- 1:02:13What are you seeing from him? As far as it goes?
- 1:02:18Yeah, I mean he's a great route, Runner really good.
- 1:02:22After the catch ability he understands how to find and
- 1:02:26settle into those soft spots and Zone coverage and he's kind of
- 1:02:30the the outside of the stick outside of the hash stick mover
- 1:02:36and he's their primary intermediate route Target.
- 1:02:40But he is a below-average, blocker.
- 1:02:41So if they try to use him in the Run game, as a blocker, he
- 1:02:44doesn't hold up very well and he's not a legitimate deep
- 1:02:49threat just his skillset combined with Van Dyke's,
- 1:02:54inability to to kind of push it down.
- 1:02:56Feel with good, velocity doesn't really match up well, so they
- 1:02:59don't take a ton of shots downfield.
- 1:03:04All right, and so far this year, I mean solid stats not blowing
- 1:03:09the world away with, you know, 14 or ception 283 yards.
- 1:03:12Only one touchdown. And you talk about that
- 1:03:15intermediate along of only 20, which is really interesting to
- 1:03:19see and just kind of looking at them in general, you know, look
- 1:03:24at their wide receiver room. Only one guy has a catch about
- 1:03:2750 yards which may be something. We weren't expecting to see
- 1:03:32there. And that was Xavier Restrepo.
- 1:03:38So you know is it just the offense?
- 1:03:42Is it the guys aren't talented? Do they not have the speed?
- 1:03:44It's interesting to see that it might go back to what they've
- 1:03:49been recruiting towards for the last couple years before, you
- 1:03:52know, they hired Josh Gaddis Gaddis.
- 1:03:59I'm thinking about the head coach and it's just completely
- 1:04:02blockers on my crystal ball cheesy Lord.
- 1:04:07Because when you go from that sort of Airaid concept to more
- 1:04:12pro-style, maybe you don't have the field stretchers quite yet.
- 1:04:17Now, let's talk about it. You just mentioned his name.
- 1:04:19We all know about Josh Gaddis successful at Alabama,
- 1:04:24successful last year. Michigan has made His way down
- 1:04:26to the hurricane, sort of kind of rough out of the gate.
- 1:04:31But what do you see from his scheme?
- 1:04:33I mean, it's a hybrid pro-style. They have some like West Coast
- 1:04:36and spread elements kind of mixed in there.
- 1:04:40A lot of pro formations and schemes with more up-tempo.
- 1:04:43Some of that are a kind of mindset, still still a part of
- 1:04:46this offense, but you know, it's ran with more traditional
- 1:04:52formations and schemes, but it's still a kind of get the ball.
- 1:04:56Out of your quick, you get the ball of your hands quick type
- 1:04:59offense when they're throwing the football.
- 1:05:03They like to move the pocket, a lot to take advantage of Tyler
- 1:05:06Van Dyke's abilities to throw on the Run that's mixed in with
- 1:05:10more Pro Style Elements, that blend Gap and run schemes, and
- 1:05:14they use a variety of formations emotions to create advantages in
- 1:05:18that, run scheme. But as I said already, they
- 1:05:21don't take a lot of shots and they are not a very good team
- 1:05:25when they get in the Red Zone. They don't, they don't put the
- 1:05:28ball in the end zone. Very often.
- 1:05:29Yeah. And we'll talk about that a
- 1:05:30little later. Let's also talk about this real
- 1:05:34quick. They started the season by
- 1:05:38hanging Sonia with the input movement.
- 1:05:41Since that point in time, they have scored only 94 points, they
- 1:05:45are averaging right at 23, a game.
- 1:05:48And when you look at their statistical data, the data in
- 1:05:51general, is always going to show you what they're averaging over.
- 1:05:5430 reality is since week one, they're averaging 23.
- 1:05:59So it sort of puts me on that alert of, you know, don't always
- 1:06:05trust the numbers break, the numbers down a little bit, take
- 1:06:08certain things out and usually you get more of the Real story
- 1:06:11of what's going on with the team.
- 1:06:14All right, well, let's flip it over to the defensive side of
- 1:06:17the ball led by Kevin Steele long time, defensive
- 1:06:21coordinator. And let's talk about the inside
- 1:06:23linebacker, Corey Flag, Junior, 511, 230 pounds out of Houston,
- 1:06:29Texas and North Shore, High School class of 2020.
- 1:06:34Akon non-traditional Hurricane here.
- 1:06:39He was a low 3 star and 83 by 24/7 standards and you know,
- 1:06:47seems like he's doing pretty good for himself thus far.
- 1:06:51Yeah. And the big thing is that he's a
- 1:06:52sure tackler and really good in Pursuit and that kind of makes
- 1:06:55that's kind of player you that gets.
- 1:06:57You gets on the field pretty quickly you know regardless of
- 1:07:00their kind of top-end talent there he does a good job of
- 1:07:03taking on the pulling lineman attacking the Gap when he reads.
- 1:07:06Run. He doesn't really get confused.
- 1:07:09Very often by window dressing or misdirection.
- 1:07:12They will use him as a Blitzer fairly regularly but he can
- 1:07:17struggle when he ends up responsible for the edge.
- 1:07:21So that may be an opportunity where we can take advantage
- 1:07:23there. But he's a solid player across
- 1:07:25the board. I mean she is she's a leader of
- 1:07:28the defense is he make the calls from what you could see?
- 1:07:32Yeah, he is one of the players that makes the call there.
- 1:07:35They kind of rotate another. I think Redshirt senior, or
- 1:07:39super senior, I forget his name right off the bat, but those are
- 1:07:43the two primary inside, backers that they're using, all right.
- 1:07:48And so far this year, I mean, great, great, stat line, 30,
- 1:07:52tackles seven and a half. Of those are tackles for loss.
- 1:07:55He's got one and a half sacks, no interceptions.
- 1:07:59No, real past deflection. So, it's like you kind of
- 1:08:01mention their Prime for a couple minutes.
- 1:08:04Is he's attacking us Certain area of the field where he's not
- 1:08:08out there and coverage. Yeah a lot of run
- 1:08:10responsibilities lot of going sideline to sideline in the Run
- 1:08:14game. He's mostly kind of sitting in
- 1:08:17in some solve zones when he's in coverage.
- 1:08:19He's not running man to man with a lot of guys.
- 1:08:23Awesome. Let's flip and let's take a look
- 1:08:24at one of the guys on the back end here and that's um, Cameron
- 1:08:28kenshin's. Sophomore, 5 11, 2002 out of
- 1:08:31Miami. Florida out of Northwestern.
- 1:08:34High School composite four-star. We Mount was a top 350 player,
- 1:08:39top, 25 safety. And you know, so far this year,
- 1:08:44solid numbers, just ten tackles, but he's really been a kind of,
- 1:08:50I would say, I don't know if you call him a ball hawk or just
- 1:08:53Johnny on the spot, he has three interceptions and a fumble
- 1:08:57recovery. So he is essentially taking care
- 1:09:00of four turnovers by himself. Yep.
- 1:09:03Is the tape saying that he's a hawk?
- 1:09:05Or is he just? In the right spots.
- 1:09:09A little bit of both. I mean, he is their primary
- 1:09:11coverage safety. He's not ask to be a force
- 1:09:14player, very regularly, but he does a decent job when they
- 1:09:17asked him to occasionally, you'll see him in the box.
- 1:09:20But usually, he's kind of the deep middle safety or matched up
- 1:09:23in man coverage. They will occasionally, use him
- 1:09:27as a Blitzer, but that's not his strong suit.
- 1:09:29He sometimes gets kind of eat up if the blocks there unless he's
- 1:09:33running free but he does like to hit But he will occasionally
- 1:09:38missed tackles from time to time.
- 1:09:39So that might be an opportunity where if we can kind of shake
- 1:09:42that first initial hit, we might have some opportunity to break
- 1:09:45some long, some long gains there in the secondary.
- 1:09:48So when you see those missed tackles is it is it bad
- 1:09:52technique playing recklessly kind of coming in too hot?
- 1:09:56Usually okay, not not being in control, not breaking down, not
- 1:10:01forming up any man responsibility or do they try to
- 1:10:05keep him back in the middle like you?
- 1:10:07It's a Mickey. He's either playing deep middle
- 1:10:10third or he's in man coverage. Okay, so today they mix it up a
- 1:10:14little bit. All right.
- 1:10:16Makes sense with steel with some of the stuff he does as we'll
- 1:10:18talk about in a few minutes here.
- 1:10:20All right, let's go to the defensive line and let's talk
- 1:10:23about Jafari Harvey, six-foot-four 252 pounds from
- 1:10:29Port st. Lucie Florida at a Vero.
- 1:10:32Beach, High School for Star, weak side.
- 1:10:35Defensive end when he came. Out in 2019, he was a cop 160
- 1:10:40player nationally. He was a top ten weeks.
- 1:10:43I defensive end. He was a top 20 players in
- 1:10:45Florida and he looked at his sort of, you know, his offer
- 1:10:50List, Miami, Mississippi State, NC State, you know, Florida
- 1:10:56State Kentucky to be a highly ranked guy.
- 1:10:59He's missing quite a few names there, but it's still a good
- 1:11:03list. He's got George on here, but
- 1:11:05usually you see a guy in that. 93 94.
- 1:11:08You see a lot more offers. What's the tape saying on him?
- 1:11:11And is there, was it sighs? Maybe coming out, maybe people
- 1:11:14are worried about or something else.
- 1:11:16Yeah, it looks like sighs. He had all of those like quality
- 1:11:19second-tier offers just none of the, you know, only only really
- 1:11:24one or two of the first tears. Yeah, but he is their primary
- 1:11:28Edge, rusher little undersized. They often having them in a two
- 1:11:32point stance, but he will put his hand in the dirt.
- 1:11:34He's not as good against the run, is he?
- 1:11:37Is when he's rushing the passer he can't get washed out of place
- 1:11:42when kicked by the kicked out by the tight end or pulling guard.
- 1:11:45So he does get blocked easily sometimes in those more Gap
- 1:11:48schemes which we can, hopefully take advantage of and he does
- 1:11:53better when he can just shoot a gap, something where he can go
- 1:11:57up field, to use his athleticism and his strength to his
- 1:12:00Advantage. Yeah, and for Harvey, you know,
- 1:12:04the first few games he missed the game against Miss or didn't
- 1:12:08register in the game in southern missed.
- 1:12:10Only a couple tackles against, you know a.m. and but the last
- 1:12:15two games against Middle, Tennessee State, any at UNC,
- 1:12:20he's starting to show up in the Box, he had, you know, he had
- 1:12:23five tackles in each game. He registered a sack in the
- 1:12:27Middle. Tennessee, a half a sack.
- 1:12:29Yes, three-and-a-half stackables for loss total for the year.
- 1:12:33So maybe rounding into his own again.
- 1:12:37You defensive coordinator. We were seeing it here.
- 1:12:40Figuring out what to do with guys, right, who played a
- 1:12:43prominent role. Because you know last year and
- 1:12:45you know, really his second third year, just twenty six
- 1:12:52tackles. So you know it's just introduced
- 1:12:56you guys so highly rated and not do the production.
- 1:12:59It's Wonder was he a potential casualty of not getting develop
- 1:13:04correctly coming out. Probably Brian.
- 1:13:09Let's take a look at one more player and that is James
- 1:13:13Williams. Six-foot-five 224, defensive
- 1:13:19back. And he was you know we kind of
- 1:13:23went up and down. We had some low guys, we had
- 1:13:25some mid 90s guys. This is one of the elites of the
- 1:13:29elite five-star composite and with 24/7 top 15 nationally he
- 1:13:37was the Top safety in the 2021 class.
- 1:13:42A top-five player in Florida. Obviously, you hear that 65 and
- 1:13:47over 200 Bill, and he was 215 coming out in high school.
- 1:13:50He was already ready. Made What's he look like on
- 1:13:54take? He definitely pops on tape and
- 1:13:58they actually have deployed him in a lot of different ways this
- 1:14:02year, okay? You'll see him kind of as the
- 1:14:07the same backer that primary coverage linebacker in this 4-3
- 1:14:14defense, you'll see them lined up in nickel.
- 1:14:16When they go nickel, you'll see him at strong safety.
- 1:14:20So, they kind of move him different positions, depending
- 1:14:23on what other Personnel is on the field, he rarely.
- 1:14:26Comes off the field, okay? They just they just redeploy him
- 1:14:29in a different way but definitely the best player on
- 1:14:33the defense has a that Shamari Connor tight type role where
- 1:14:36he's doing a little bit of this little bit of that but him he's
- 1:14:41a really good tackler, plays well at the line of scrimmage
- 1:14:44for somebody that's in his first year of doing it.
- 1:14:47He's better in zone that he is in man coverage, but he's not a
- 1:14:51liability in either, okay? But the real only weakness in
- 1:14:55his game, He can get fooled with kind of that misdirection and
- 1:14:58play action. So if we're going to kind of get
- 1:15:01him out of position, that's the way to do it.
- 1:15:03All right, so trying to think some misdirection we're not
- 1:15:09seeing much misdirection recently with this awful more
- 1:15:12play-action, the misdirection. Okay.
- 1:15:15Yeah. So it'll be interesting.
- 1:15:17He himself kind of already proven and improving in the
- 1:15:20stats from last year to this year.
- 1:15:23He played significant role in 21.
- 1:15:27He had, you know, 31, tackles couple picks this year, already,
- 1:15:31what five games in 21 tackles already.
- 1:15:36Ardea pick 2:03 flexion. So he's definitely a problem.
- 1:15:40Wherever they put him on the field because six-foot-five
- 1:15:44225-pound guys with good athleticism.
- 1:15:47They weren't made every day. So no, I don't think well I
- 1:15:51don't think we'll We want to will see him for at least a
- 1:15:54couple more years and overall with the, you know, the
- 1:15:58Hurricanes defense in general, you know, 15 sacks for the
- 1:16:02years, a team again, Harvey's leading the way, but it's a lot
- 1:16:07of one-and-a-half stews. So it's not as it's not any one
- 1:16:12player jumping out, you know, they seem like a solid defensive
- 1:16:16unit, but let's talk about that scheme.
- 1:16:19Brian of Kevin Steele again, long time, defensive Coordinator
- 1:16:23Kevin Steele. Yet it's a 4-3 scheme.
- 1:16:27Something we're used to seeing Miami run their aggressive
- 1:16:31without being hyper aggressive in the Blitz and category.
- 1:16:35They don't leave their corners on islands like we saw last week
- 1:16:38with pit so it's a little bit more Zone Zone coverage mixed in
- 1:16:43there. They have below average Corner
- 1:16:47play, they're not very good at quarterback.
- 1:16:49Okay, inexperience. But talented in the safety
- 1:16:53group, like we've talked about that group still learning.
- 1:16:56A lot of them are kind of red shirts, sophomores, or younger,
- 1:17:02and they're kind of just mixing in and seeing seeing what they
- 1:17:05can do. But they're, it's, most of those
- 1:17:06guys are kind of the four star rating rated players there.
- 1:17:10So they've got a lot of talent in the safety room.
- 1:17:13Just they're still kind of putting the pieces.
- 1:17:15Has together but above average front, seven pretty good, pretty
- 1:17:20good linebacker play overall and you know it's a solid unit but
- 1:17:26they will give up big plays so that's where we can probably
- 1:17:28take advantage of them is in that big play category.
- 1:17:31Hopefully, we can pop another couple big shots down the field
- 1:17:35like we saw against Pitt this past week.
- 1:17:37All right let's hope that's the case and something else I want
- 1:17:41to mention real quick and I hope it doesn't bite Us in the
- 1:17:44errors. Running back room.
- 1:17:47What do you think their longest run of the year is Braun?
- 1:17:5340 yards. 50 yards, 26. Okay.
- 1:17:58So you know obviously after last week getting gassed, I'm sure.
- 1:18:02Run Fitz will be, it's not going somewhere.
- 1:18:08We don't we don't double that come Saturday.
- 1:18:12Well also, I got a Feelin, correction Sunday was all about
- 1:18:17run, fits for the defense all levels.
- 1:18:20All right. Let's flip to the Hokey keys for
- 1:18:23this game and we're going to start out here Brian and
- 1:18:28something we've done still done. Good at got popped a couple
- 1:18:31times this week is the Hokies red zone.
- 1:18:33Defense. It's more looking at through the
- 1:18:36lens of the Hurricanes. Reds on offense, which ranks
- 1:18:4073rd in the country. The only converting about 80%
- 1:18:44every time they get down there so there's that opportunity,
- 1:18:50right? If Force them to drive the
- 1:18:52field. Unlike you and see, this is a
- 1:18:56team that doesn't punch it in all the time.
- 1:18:59They leave points on the field and you know, you watched a
- 1:19:02little bit of that game. Saturday, what happened a few
- 1:19:06times when they got down there. They are one were they kind of
- 1:19:11busted into the Red Zone? Had a fumble late in the game
- 1:19:14that killed a drive. They had a turnover on Downs
- 1:19:18that killed a drive and they weren't able to punch it in one
- 1:19:20time that they had settled for three.
- 1:19:22So they really only had three touchdowns on six trips last
- 1:19:28week. If you count the one where they
- 1:19:30got into the Red Zone on the rush before they fumbled it so
- 1:19:35if we can keep them around that same number and Both in trips
- 1:19:40and and conversion rate. I feel a lot better about what
- 1:19:43we can do this weekend. Yeah absolutely.
- 1:19:47I mean anytime anytime you can do that right anytime if they
- 1:19:51get down and you stop them but it still goes to that big point
- 1:19:55of what we keep saying when this team can get teams to have to
- 1:20:01drive the ball without big, chunk plays better things
- 1:20:05happen. Yep.
- 1:20:06Better things happen. And we saw that You know, when
- 1:20:10they couple when they weren't breaking the big ones pit really
- 1:20:13one doing that much offensively including making a mistake when
- 1:20:17Gionta Jenkins made the pick and gave us the Hokies a short
- 1:20:21field. So, I'll be interested to see
- 1:20:24how Pride plays this with a team.
- 1:20:26That's not shown as much explosiveness as the Hurricanes.
- 1:20:30All right? The other thing is going to be
- 1:20:33the Hokies passing offense a because Grant Wells is coming
- 1:20:38off his best. Game.
- 1:20:39We felt like we may have found something having fradulent in
- 1:20:43the box with Tyler bowling, again, blend with been an
- 1:20:46offensive coordinator prior but also because of Miami's passing
- 1:20:50off defense. It's horrible.
- 1:20:55You know, they are 105 and passing yards allowed, that's
- 1:20:59not good. That's not below a lot of bad
- 1:21:02defense. Has that we've seen?
- 1:21:03They are what a dick cornerback. You said if we didn't talk about
- 1:21:08any corner, As usually we try to bring up one corner or someone
- 1:21:11who's covered. We didn't talk about any in the
- 1:21:14you know the players to watch for for the hurricane.
- 1:21:18The other one in this is to me. I like this metric a little
- 1:21:20better and just yards allowed the passing efficiency defense
- 1:21:25What if I told you Brian, there are only 15 teams worse than
- 1:21:28them. That's wild.
- 1:21:31It's comparing the the talent that on that team.
- 1:21:34So yeah. So what do you think?
- 1:21:36Just looking and I say passing offense, we look at their
- 1:21:40numbers. We show, they aren't good.
- 1:21:42What sort of Route Concepts where do you feel like we need
- 1:21:45to attack this week. We need to make sure that we're
- 1:21:50kind of running Caleb Smith on some of those Fades that we saw
- 1:21:52this past week where we had some success.
- 1:21:55We saw Lofton with a corner route for a touchdown, you know
- 1:22:00things like that, where we can kind of either get the
- 1:22:04cornerback, not sure what he's supposed to do, where you
- 1:22:07supposed to wear supposed to go or things that kind of put those
- 1:22:13corners on an island in man-to-man coverage, and let a
- 1:22:16big body. Like, Love Smith, get position
- 1:22:20and make the catch their down the field.
- 1:22:24All right. Daquan, right.
- 1:22:26Nick, and Nick Gallo. Do we need?
- 1:22:31Do we need a Nick Gallo game from earlier this season of long
- 1:22:34with rights been doing? Is that going to help with those
- 1:22:36short? Intermediates.
- 1:22:37Yeah. And those are going to be the
- 1:22:39ones that kind of keep us on the field.
- 1:22:40Those are going to be the stick Weaver's and that's that's we're
- 1:22:42going to need a good combination.
- 1:22:44Those stick movers with some of those shots where we can take
- 1:22:47advantage of their weakness deep down the field.
- 1:22:49Awesome. Alright, something else I wanted
- 1:22:53to look at in this is sort of, it's, it's still good because
- 1:22:58even if we look last week pit only converted 6 of 15 on third
- 1:23:02down and they were over 104. So, 6 of 16 total, but our third
- 1:23:07down defense against Miami and it's actually one of their
- 1:23:09strengths, it's one of their strengths.
- 1:23:12They are 30 second in the country in converting, so they
- 1:23:15are essentially upper third of the country for that. that
- 1:23:19they're converting about 46 percent and even after the
- 1:23:23losses, If you, if we get teams to third down, we're still one
- 1:23:28of the best units in the country.
- 1:23:30And as we looked at the data and you looked at the tape and we
- 1:23:34see more and more this isn't an explosive team, this is a team,
- 1:23:40they have to drive a Miata matriculate.
- 1:23:43Now they might get some, some of those, you know, a bunch of 15,
- 1:23:47yarders to me down the field but they're not going to beat you in
- 1:23:51one play like pit would. Okay?
- 1:23:54So How cute is that? How cute he is?
- 1:23:57It I mean there are 46 where in the top ten I think roughly
- 1:24:01about 27, is there a number? You're going to look at, is it
- 1:24:05going to be? You know, is it, is it 35?
- 1:24:09It's worth 30 to 35, where they're, they're roughly losing.
- 1:24:14Three drives or four drives converting the game is, I mean,
- 1:24:18is that what you look for is it? If we keep them to 40 we just we
- 1:24:22limit them one or two possessions.
- 1:24:24I think if we keep in the 40 that's kind of where we want to
- 1:24:27operate and I think the bigger thing is, when they are driving,
- 1:24:32when they are having some consistency, make them make them
- 1:24:36have to earn it, make them have to run more plays, because the
- 1:24:38more plays they run, the more often they're going to make a
- 1:24:40mistake. So, you know, make that make
- 1:24:45the, if they're going to, if they're moving the ball,
- 1:24:46somewhat effectively. Make that a 12-play driver, they
- 1:24:49end up kicking a field goal because they can't get it done
- 1:24:51in the Red Zone. Yeah.
- 1:24:53And we talked about Van Dyke tonight.
- 1:24:54And last year, Van Dyke, who played a ton only through six
- 1:24:59picks in over 300 attempts, this year.
- 1:25:02He's at 175, he's already at four.
- 1:25:05He threw one last week. You through a couple against
- 1:25:08Middle Tennessee, through a couple.
- 1:25:09He threw one against Southern Miss.
- 1:25:12And obviously had his worst completion game against Texas
- 1:25:15A&M. If, you know, 51% this County
- 1:25:18Middle Tennessee because he was pulled early in that game.
- 1:25:21So it's like I kept drawing back to that third down because it is
- 1:25:27something they do good. But it's also something that if
- 1:25:30they don't do good. It's what happened?
- 1:25:33You know, when they get blown out by Middle Tennessee or not
- 1:25:37converting down in the Red Zone against Texas, A&M where they
- 1:25:40had some chances and They didn't convert.
- 1:25:42So be interesting to see that. All right, last but not least
- 1:25:48and I tussled with this one because I didn't want to be seem
- 1:25:52redundant or same old. Same old, but Brian.
- 1:25:56After what we saw last week I don't think me or you are going
- 1:26:01to it might be the rest of the season we say it's going to be
- 1:26:05how the trunk of all. Yep.
- 1:26:08And we don't have to be great at running.
- 1:26:11The mall. What are they giving up?
- 1:26:13100, just over 100 yards per game right now?
- 1:26:16Yeah, 10 to a game. If we're just over that, that
- 1:26:21might be enough as a team. If we're just over that, that's
- 1:26:26effective enough because of how bad they are in the secondary.
- 1:26:30Okay, so right now, if we can hit that average, especially
- 1:26:34with how we played historically on the year and looking at last
- 1:26:38week, if we can build on last week and kind of put a similar
- 1:26:40type effort out there against this unit that might be enough
- 1:26:44with all the problems they have on the back end.
- 1:26:46So is this something where you're saying we run somewhere
- 1:26:49between 25 and 30 runs similar to last week and yeah like Like
- 1:26:54110, which would be what right at right at for maybe.
- 1:26:58Little under for Carrie. Yes, 20 25 to 30 carries total,
- 1:27:03you know, somewhere around 110 to 120.
- 1:27:06I think would be a good output. You know, we don't need to set
- 1:27:10the world on fire if we do better than that, great.
- 1:27:12Because if we're doing better than that, that means we're
- 1:27:14probably controlling the ball and running out some clock in
- 1:27:18the second, half a little bit. But yeah, I'd be Be good with
- 1:27:24just, you know, clipping over their average and getting a good
- 1:27:2825 to 30 carries to our backs and quarterback now.
- 1:27:31And what's 102 102 is a top 25 run defense and pit was given up
- 1:27:37roughly 125 actually about the same ballpark, right?
- 1:27:43The same ballpark and we hit that average and we just saw by
- 1:27:48hitting right at that average. We were in the game.
- 1:27:52The passing lanes were opening up.
- 1:27:54We're not. I think the funny thing is our
- 1:27:56expectations right now. Are we kind of seen it, right?
- 1:28:02We've seen just one week of having a slightly better on me.
- 1:28:06We're not going back to the days of Jones and Suggs and Wilson
- 1:28:10and Williams, where we were getting 5.8 a carry and 6.3
- 1:28:14carry, we're seeing for work. And, and You know, if the
- 1:28:23defense continues to play, the way it has most of the time.
- 1:28:28In that little bit of bumping thing in there is a chance and
- 1:28:32will flip over to gain prediction now.
- 1:28:34Brian, I'll lead off and I want all those things to be good, I
- 1:28:39do. But I feel like we have yet to
- 1:28:43put For consistent quarters together and as crazy and wild
- 1:28:53is that game was on Saturday. We saw it was spells in the
- 1:29:00third quarter and the end of the fourth quarter where we didn't
- 1:29:03put it together, it's probably roughly 10 minutes.
- 1:29:07Eight, ten minutes, we just didn't play good on either side
- 1:29:12of the ball and in those eight minutes we didn't score any
- 1:29:15points. And we gave up 21.
- 1:29:17And so unfortunately for me because until I can see us at
- 1:29:20least put three and a half quarters together, through three
- 1:29:24and a half. I'm not even asking for
- 1:29:26three-and-a-half 52 minutes. Yep.
- 1:29:31Yeah. 52 minutes. Maybe a little more than that,
- 1:29:35maybe 55. I got to go Miami 2823 after a
- 1:29:41hard-fought loss for them and after a hard-fought loss for us.
- 1:29:45Yeah, I've got The little bit closer, but right in the same
- 1:29:47ballpark, 2724 Miami and the big thing is kind of what you said,
- 1:29:53we still have not put three phases and four quarters
- 1:29:57together in the same game. You know, we saw some
- 1:30:00progression on offense, we saw a little regression on defense.
- 1:30:03We saw very inconsistent on special teams this past week,
- 1:30:07despite mostly playing a clean game, you know we had probably
- 1:30:12one or two more penalties than I'd like but clean overall. 77
- 1:30:17overall clean overall. And you know, if we if we can
- 1:30:23put those together I like our chances but I still have to see
- 1:30:26it and until I see it, I'm going to probably still stick with
- 1:30:30with picking our opponents, especially in a matchup where
- 1:30:32there's more talent and depth on the other side of the ball.
- 1:30:36And that's and that's the tough part.
- 1:30:38Is, you see their flaws and it's like the flaws.
- 1:30:43We have to we since we still can't play a fork.
- 1:30:45Order game. We're not going to be able to
- 1:30:48take of those advantage of those flaws all the time.
- 1:30:51There's going to be times, probably, I'm sure you're seeing
- 1:30:53your head, there will be a time when we get behind them and
- 1:30:56we're going to miss. Well, we're going to take a
- 1:30:58side. Yeah.
- 1:31:00I mean, we don't have to play a perfect game to win this, but
- 1:31:02we've got to play an 85% game and we have we've been playing
- 1:31:07mostly somewhere between 50 and 70.
- 1:31:12So we got to put, we got to play 85%, clean game from a execution
- 1:31:18standpoint, from a time management, game management,
- 1:31:21standpoint from taking advantage of the plays that are there
- 1:31:24standpoint to not, not shooting ourselves in the foot between
- 1:31:29penalties and turnovers. There's just there's so much
- 1:31:32that we got to do. If we can get to that, 85
- 1:31:34percent level will be competitive and, and squeak out
- 1:31:37some wins probably against anybody left on our schedule,
- 1:31:41but we just Haven't seen that enough to where you can kind of,
- 1:31:46you know, take a chance on that. So that's kind of where I'm at.
- 1:31:49I hope I see it this week. Yeah, like I hope, I hope he
- 1:31:53finally put all the pieces together, at least most of the
- 1:31:55pieces together in one game where there's not those glaring
- 1:32:01portions, whether it's coming out of halftime.
- 1:32:03And, you know, looking like shit for the first three or four
- 1:32:06drives on offense, which has been consistent and that's fed.
- 1:32:10Oh, that's blood over to the Offense where we're not playing
- 1:32:12complimentary football and then we give up one or two scores in
- 1:32:15that same period and that's it and that's usually the game and
- 1:32:19that's where I mean we ended up flipping that and got got two
- 1:32:23quick scores to get ourselves back in it.
- 1:32:24You know, late third rolling into the fourth, their against
- 1:32:27Pitt, but we were one Sudden Change of way from from another
- 1:32:31collapse. So we've got to we got to
- 1:32:33respond better and we've got to come out of halftime a lot
- 1:32:36better when the, when the adjustments are there and not,
- 1:32:39take another half a quarter. To a quarter to figure out.
- 1:32:43Okay, well, this is how they adjusted, here's how we can
- 1:32:45counter, we got to be quicker with that.
- 1:32:48All right. Well Bronson soccer game is a
- 1:32:5012:30 kick. I'm probably missing it.
- 1:32:53All, I'll be watching it on replay at some point in time in
- 1:32:55the house here. There's some good new.
- 1:32:59Nothing is being brighter, looking for our big screen or
- 1:33:02sharing. We both look at the two of the
- 1:33:0412. These are nice and it's like,
- 1:33:05shit, We're not gonna watch these.
- 1:33:07I'm gonna be watching anyway. So what's your big screener for
- 1:33:10the week? Because this is a loaded week?
- 1:33:13Six top, 25 matchups all times of the day.
- 1:33:18Early, you know, noon late, you get Penn State Michigan.
- 1:33:24You know, is a huge kick off at 12:00.
- 1:33:26I know me and you both thought about doing that one.
- 1:33:28But you pretty much say, well, I'm not going to watch it while
- 1:33:31I'm not gonna put it as my big screener, you know, you got NC
- 1:33:37State and Syracuse are excuses. I'm beat still, yes.
- 1:33:41If you take Kentucky, and then USC you call late.
- 1:33:45So we kind of want to get into the argument is Syracuse the
- 1:33:48worst undefeated team left. I mean, father, there was a
- 1:33:53timeline debate about that. You know, some orange fans got
- 1:33:59butthurt, but you look at their schedule.
- 1:34:03Their, you know, depending on how things go the next few
- 1:34:07games, they might not even be Bowl eligible until the last
- 1:34:09game of their season. It's true, NC State, Clemson,
- 1:34:13Notre Dame, pit, Florida State Wake, and then Boston College,
- 1:34:16who has played better as they gave.
- 1:34:20A constant, a pretty good. Good fight on Saturday night but
- 1:34:22Brian all, those good games will probably be catching the
- 1:34:25afternoons of most of them. What's your big screener and why
- 1:34:31I'm going Alabama at Tennessee? That's that's the biggest SEC
- 1:34:37matchup of the week, we still got hokey transfer Hendon
- 1:34:43hooker, pulling the string at Tennessee.
- 1:34:48Still Still Still pulling for him.
- 1:34:50Big time here. Tennessee, seven-and-a-half home
- 1:34:54dog. And I'm taking them in the
- 1:34:57points in this one. I think it's going to come down
- 1:34:59to the wire. I'm not, I'd like to take
- 1:35:01Tennessee out, right? But I think it's going to come
- 1:35:03down to the wire. All right, that's good.
- 1:35:06I like that. Obviously, they're the rumors is
- 1:35:10Dolly Parton. Going to be the Picker on hope
- 1:35:13so I hope so I'd be sweet. Let Dolly do it.
- 1:35:18All right, with me. I still treasure National
- 1:35:21Treasure. She is and every way in All
- 1:35:24sorts of ways. Me, unfortunately, Brian.
- 1:35:28Got to lead on the big screen is this week.
- 1:35:30We literally have to go back and forth because it's just not fair
- 1:35:33for one person lead and take the best match of every week.
- 1:35:37Yeah. So this week I can't take the
- 1:35:41Bama Tennessee game. I will have it on here in the
- 1:35:43cave, probably on the big one right behind me here, but the
- 1:35:48other game at 3:30, another huge matchup, you know, okey State at
- 1:35:53TCU. Cookie State unbeaten, ranked in
- 1:35:56the top 12 TCU ranked number eight coming off.
- 1:36:00The huge win at Kansas okey state is giving four and a half
- 1:36:05here, and I got a buddy at work. His dad was an Oklahoma State
- 1:36:11Alum, and me and him had a good conversation about all the stuff
- 1:36:14gunned. He's done there.
- 1:36:15Good. And really, in the last five,
- 1:36:16six years of Defense has gotten a lot better.
- 1:36:19And you know, when I was kind of looking through, like how good
- 1:36:23an excuse me, Oklahoma state is a tcu's 12, you know, Oklahoma
- 1:36:30State gives up, only about 24 points, a game and TCU they're
- 1:36:37both scoring in the 40s. I can't okey state has proven to
- 1:36:42me defensively. They can play TCU.
- 1:36:45Hasn't they played a couple scrubs and giving up some
- 1:36:48points. I'm not knocking SMU, but they
- 1:36:50give up a lot of points desam you.
- 1:36:52So if you're giving me four and a half points with the fighting,
- 1:36:55Mike Gundy 's, I will take plus four and a half and I will call
- 1:36:59okey State wins out, right? So, I'm running Hammer the money
- 1:37:04line. Take the points as well.
- 1:37:07Brian anything breaking since you and I started an hour and 40
- 1:37:12minutes ago. I think we're good, buddy.
