- 0:33I'm so drunk. Welcome back to a hamster with a
- 0:41blunt penknife the Doctor Who commentary podcast.
- 0:44I'm Mark dick and I am here, this evening was to ever-ready
- 0:48ever-present Bullet, brilliant, effusive and effervescent chill
- 0:55forward, and his in podcast enabling ways their own.
- 1:00Oh, Stuart compliment. But hello.
- 1:02Yes. Hello.
- 1:03Yeah. Are you doing tonight?
- 1:04Not too bad? Yeah.
- 1:05So how are you? I have to say that was an
- 1:08incredibly Especially holy outing that but honestly people
- 1:12love your accent. You know that the comments about
- 1:14the previous ones. You've done no the whole no
- 1:17actually. Sorry.
- 1:17They just come into my inbox rather, right?
- 1:20Yeah. Oh that's okay.
- 1:21Now you've now removed Fraser Gregory as the hottest accent of
- 1:26handsome and blunt penknife go. She's going to get.
- 1:29Stop it in no time. Well, I nothing.
- 1:34Your daughter is just your accent, okay?
- 1:37It's amazing. What you can do when you're not
- 1:38even trying. Mr. Fogg I was just reading out
- 1:41shopping this. I'll tell you what they flocked
- 1:42here. Oh gosh.
- 1:44Give it a try. It's not that.
- 1:46I thought our got so far off the Beaten Track.
- 1:47Where only a minute in. I know look good tangents Mark,
- 1:55you chose the story that we are going to watch today.
- 1:59So would you care to introduce it?
- 2:01And any opening thoughts that you might have and we are going
- 2:05to be looking at something kind of food this evening.
- 2:10An episode. It was more chosen by random if
- 2:12you had listened to our previous encounter.
- 2:16When we finished part 4 of caves of androzani, we were plucking
- 2:19numbers from thin air and wind up.
- 2:20We were talking about 50 minutes.
- 2:21You know try to figure out which to talk about because it's not
- 2:25very good when you're trying to get somebody who is not
- 2:27accustomed to being spontaneous to be spontaneous.
- 2:30When I'm sitting there literally going okay, pick a number, a
- 2:33bloody nightmare. Trying to choose to take away,
- 2:35you know? Oh God yeah.
- 2:36Oh yeah, just go for the same thing every time and then you're
- 2:38fine. Somebody says, look, we try this
- 2:40for a change. I teach I was, I'm just ate the
- 2:43other day while so I've got off on a tangent again, but I was
- 2:46having somebody of an epistemological quandary going
- 2:48through. I just could not decide which,
- 2:50which receives do I have enough at half an hour and, you know,
- 2:54it, you know, we got to decide out of the time you end up
- 2:59wasting, so maybe we won't do that.
- 3:02And they won't use that method again in future for picking a
- 3:05store, not because we've picked a bad story at all, but because
- 3:09it Up a lot of time in Chicago, Steven Moffat on me or are, you
- 3:13know, we've had a conversation pre-recording determining, which
- 3:16story you can think the camera was gonna try and be all
- 3:19spontaneous and I'm not very good at that and you've just
- 3:21taken my spontaneity away from me.
- 3:24Would you do you? Like, okay so you said we're
- 3:25going to have a new toy. Yeah.
- 3:28But so we could technically be talking about the end of time.
- 3:31We could be talking about the doctor's wife.
- 3:33Could be talking about The Impossible Planet webisode.
- 3:36Are we talkin about? We're talking about planet
- 3:38includes the Most terrific of food episodes.
- 3:43Tastic. This I'll tell you what.
- 3:45Now, I don't know about you, but I didn't have a very high
- 3:48opinion of this before. I rewatch this, this time I
- 3:50thought it was above average, by thought it was one of the weaker
- 3:54episodes of series for. It, would think is the strongest
- 3:57season of knew who all the way where we now Series 13.
- 4:01Yeah, it may be eclipsed by what's coming but I thought this
- 4:07was excellent when I was just out yesterday what you thought
- 4:10of it at the time. And then now, on a re-watch, I
- 4:14remember really liking it because it was one of the First
- 4:17episodes where I think by series for, they were finding their
- 4:21confidence as a production team and them where they were
- 4:24budgeting and managing production blocks.
- 4:27I am. They were able to push the
- 4:29boundaries a wee bit more. So design-wise and you know,
- 4:32that all the whole aesthetic and the story, it's just a bit more.
- 4:36Or out of the boundaries of what they've been doing previously,
- 4:39having a proper alien world realized more or less.
- 4:42The first time I think there is a few instances where, you know,
- 4:45we've had qualities and things that night up until then, but
- 4:49suddenly we've got this snow ski on this other world and all
- 4:52these things going on it was it was so about two reminders.
- 4:56It still doctor. Oh, they've got these fabulous
- 4:58artistic landscape. So, doctor of gonna go across
- 5:02this amazing sort of snow skates with huge star.
- 5:06Oh God, static my thanks come down.
- 5:09Yeah, makes come up. It doesn't look so well for not
- 5:14things that come on, you know where we're going.
- 5:16Yeah. But then it cuts to them in.
- 5:21What is clearly? A better grass that's been
- 5:24sprayed with some snow just to remind us.
- 5:26We're still watching Doctor Who oh, gosh, yes, I wouldn't be
- 5:29right. Otherwise, I don't think they're
- 5:31very good snow escapes and especially because Especially
- 5:38when you can see the corner of the frame where the snow hasn't
- 5:41quite gone where it needs to be. But a suicide note got the
- 5:44ambition, to gotta go now. Yeah.
- 5:46And I think I think that's what made it look Ace to date.
- 5:50No, he bet the Dame the visual aesthetic because it was a bit.
- 5:54See me for a lot of the Russell, T Davies hero and I think this
- 5:58one steps out a little bit from the boundary slightly I am also
- 6:02as you see in the fact that it's part of Series 4, which is one
- 6:07of the standouts of sense Doctor Who's returned.
- 6:10It's probably one of the strongest run of episodes.
- 6:13I think plan over the Ute would be a standout in any other
- 6:16series. Yes.
- 6:18But it's literally seeing with a series of lever.
- 6:21Yeah. It would be an even like series
- 6:23knowing or something like that. This would be like a top three,
- 6:27I think. But when you're competing with
- 6:29stories, like, midnight and turn left and unicorn and the WASP,
- 6:33which is just a comedy episode, Fires of Pompeii is the hit rate
- 6:40this year. Oh yeah.
- 6:41They totally find their feet by this year was praising plan of
- 6:45the you'd it's got some stiff competition and but so that's
- 6:49not so good but it does hold its own.
- 6:52It does hold its own, what really impressed me was talk
- 6:56about it. But I'm only having so much
- 6:57conversation because I was aware of of watching it's like, oh my
- 7:00God. I'm gonna want to talk about
- 7:01that. We're gonna water but I only got
- 7:0245 minutes. So let's do some of it now.
- 7:05Yeah. The direction, my grandpa was
- 7:10funny. I thought like, I really thought
- 7:12there were there wasn't one frame that didn't feel
- 7:16artistically crafted. Like he knew exactly what Tony
- 7:20was going for in every single saving.
- 7:22Yeah, I think him leaving but also who was a massive loss or
- 7:27Steven Moffat, choosing not to use?
- 7:28It was a huge loss to the show. Yeah, I'm going to be really
- 7:32intrigued to see what he could have come up with when he was
- 7:35working with Steven Moffat. It because going back to talking
- 7:37about Aesthetics, again, the mafia era was so different from
- 7:41Russell, T Davies, and you were getting, it was it was a Moroso
- 7:45dreamlike. Escape and they were working
- 7:49with. I would have been just really
- 7:51interested to see what Graham because Graeme Harper has fun
- 7:55making Doctor. Who, when you listen to his
- 7:57commentaries, he always, he's having a seat Sita is.
- 8:01It's a thrill for him. He's really, I really need.
- 8:04That is full of energy on the set guide.
- 8:05Your cool, give me more, give me more.
- 8:09And I think by the time Steven Moffat, Sarah started, the Gone
- 8:12full HD. So there would have been
- 8:13different technical challenges for him and Graham, Harper's
- 8:16been Working on Doctor Who since what 1966 in different
- 8:20capacities, he's been dealing with like monochrome 405-line
- 8:24625-line to Transitions to color 21 in how you Stephen e, but was
- 8:29Mars. Yeah.
- 8:31Hey Steve, I then Lana but I think that's one of the best
- 8:34directed up two stories. So intense, he was he's the man
- 8:38for that job. If you want a story that's going
- 8:40to be So dynamically directed and really gets the drama and
- 8:46the punch Graham Harper's, your man.
- 8:48And that's why he was so good. That's why kids found resigning
- 8:51in Revolution of the Daleks still stand up after all these
- 8:54years. And that's nearly 40 years ago
- 8:56that he is stories. And that's why he was the only
- 8:59director who's ever been invited back to the series and again,
- 9:02and again, and again, like, I can't give any work.
- 9:05I can't give him the big Hills, like a ghost sand dunes.
- 9:08Face, stolen Earth, Journey's End.
- 9:09Yeah, these are episodes that people want Never forget, their
- 9:12like embedded in sort of culture.
- 9:15Now of this period of Doctor Who he's really versatile.
- 9:18Father, he did unicorn and the WASP this year.
- 9:21Yeah. Funny.
- 9:22You know, it's hell and I think he done left which is like a
- 9:25character drama and I proves that he's more than just the
- 9:29action, man, as well. Doing things like the unicorn
- 9:32and the WASP. It's another one that stands up
- 9:34store well and this year because it's really pitched perfectly
- 9:38and you wouldn't think it. So naturally agreement.
- 9:41Perfect. I think that's probably why we
- 9:43got him to do it. That's defined expectations
- 9:45lately. Another thing that immediately
- 9:52just make me smile. The second I turn this on was
- 9:55David Tennant, the Catherine, Tate, the set like, I was
- 9:58reading, I've good news my favorite.
- 9:59I don't get back into series for very often and then when I do
- 10:04I'm like man these guys have just got everyone else be there.
- 10:08Just gold together and that there's so much going on between
- 10:13about this between there's like morally, complex arguments.
- 10:17It's like fun banter. There's touching moments.
- 10:21And there's a bit where she says she wants to go home.
- 10:23Like there's it's a really complex relationship and it's
- 10:27been delivered by two reactors that have great chemistry.
- 10:31Oh yeah. Just yeah.
- 10:33But it's going to be the camera shooting them to absolutely
- 10:35fantastic and it's so great that they love to work together and
- 10:39it's clear that they love working together and the fact
- 10:42that they keep coming back for more and they've done big finish
- 10:45and now we're got to look forward.
- 10:47To whatever happens in 2023 if you decide to meet Mark that two
- 10:52years ago in a year's time, I'm going to be watching David
- 10:56Tennant, the Catherine, Tate back in the Tardis again but
- 10:58I'll first of all artists object because I've been so excited.
- 11:01Secondly I just want to Splash around the face and said, no way
- 11:04that's never gonna happen. Yeah.
- 11:05What are the chances? We're honestly, I could, it's
- 11:10like all my dreams have come true that on evolving orgies and
- 11:13things. It's amazing.
- 11:14Yeah. Well, I'm a scientist.
- 11:17Internal R&D, I suppose but maybe China Alaska.
- 11:23Yeah I can track him down track please.
- 11:25Yes, need to stay on track, no more tangents.
- 11:28But yeah, there were such a great team.
- 11:30I remember, I went on a leaves and she's had the mindwipe at
- 11:36the end. Journey's End I properly went
- 11:39into mourning, it was ridiculous.
- 11:42Remember the necklace it was about this.
- 11:43It was the same time. I remember it so vividly because
- 11:46I was grieving Being and it was are Mamma Mia.
- 11:50The movie came out at the same time or roughly a week later and
- 11:54the moms called Donna in that. So you've got the bit towards
- 11:56the over Pierce Brosnan is on this rock screaming Donna and I
- 12:05started to well up again because the Just saying her name was
- 12:18enough to spark off memories. So, so so good.
- 12:23So the direction is great. The performances are great.
- 12:28What do you think about scripts? I think it's pretty solid.
- 12:34It's maybe not. A standout Doctor Who scripts,
- 12:40but I think for doing sort of alien world and a bit of an
- 12:44undercurrent, a bit of a theme to it pretty, pretty solid
- 12:49stuff. And I contradict you, oh, I
- 12:53think this is a standout scream. I think, it's just not as stand
- 12:57out because as we've already said, it's buried amongst the
- 12:59local gym. Yeah.
- 13:01Well, I think there's a lot of complexity in this script.
- 13:05There's a same way. I talked about slavery, he makes
- 13:11the job about the clothes that opens a whole can of worms for
- 13:15the audience watching. Yes, I think I've really you've
- 13:18got characters like Solana in this who you think is going to
- 13:21go down One path and completely chooses.
- 13:24Another part which is like more complex characterization that
- 13:29you would normally get for other local administrator which is
- 13:32what she is. I think you've got quite complex
- 13:35characterization of people at how Open like at one point he
- 13:39goes soon like he's been absolutely awful rather however
- 13:43soon and he's forced to be you too.
- 13:45This is my go on off, you go and be with your people.
- 13:48I mean, you said it into if they're technically but it shows
- 13:51this moment of humanity, which I'm just like, okay, so yeah,
- 13:54there's a lot of sleight of hand.
- 13:56There's some it's not to think sometimes.
- 14:00I don't think a meteor of Doctor Who is completely faultless and
- 14:03I think during Russell T, Davies is here are some times things
- 14:05were too blatant. There were overstated perhaps
- 14:10and I think that's why some of the moments in this may be done.
- 14:14Come to mind until you mentioned them.
- 14:16I'm suddenly, I, yeah, it's a lot of sleight of hand.
- 14:18A lot of clever, little characterization slips in there,
- 14:23but it's not spread on thick. Okay, so you like really think
- 14:29about like the first 10 minutes, this feels very swore to me.
- 14:32There's a lot of very unpleasant people and you know,
- 14:35conglomerates and people being treated appallingly and
- 14:41violently and horribly and I you know, you like angle word, you
- 14:45know, they let Eric swore back to write a new series script.
- 14:48What is going on? There's people being gunned down
- 14:51and hunted and and, you know, the business people are in
- 14:55charge and everyone's Gerbil. Then you've got the doctor and
- 14:58daughter. There, they bring all the heart
- 15:00and soul to this story and it becomes like it's over Treatise
- 15:05on slavery which is where it starts.
- 15:07It becomes this sort of unshackling this Press society
- 15:13and it just becomes this really sort of poetic very sweet story.
- 15:18Yeah, I don't know. I just, I think, I think there's
- 15:21a lot to it. Hmm, which you get, you get
- 15:25diverted a lot. Something people get diverted, a
- 15:28lot by the action and sort of the imagery and all of that.
- 15:33But there's a lot of emotions. I think there's a lot of smarts
- 15:35in this. I just think I think it's very
- 15:39underrated. Yeah.
- 15:40And I think they can see it's a very solid script, you know how
- 15:43sometimes Especially with Doctor Who since it's come back because
- 15:48they've got such a condensed story.
- 15:50Often. The first half is sort of over
- 15:52packed with stuff and then everything's crammed in at the
- 15:54end and maybe isn't concluded its you know there's flabby
- 15:56things or it feels like there's Lou sayings not in that fucking
- 16:00our like that you have like an ultimate example of that.
- 16:04Gosh, not off the top of my head.
- 16:06The doctor's daughter, you know, where they're throwing
- 16:08everything at you, at the beginning Riri and do well.
- 16:11I throw the ball with the air of the end.
- 16:13Yes, a simple conclusions are things where you just go?
- 16:16Oh, that's a bit sort of tenuous, mmm, all of this fuels
- 16:20thought out. Yeah, I like it for that.
- 16:24What see, what I've been. We've already discussed in a
- 16:27lot, Dave. Yeah, I've got one for watching
- 16:29it, but I think we should, I think we probably ought to while
- 16:31we're here. Of watching, 45 minutes tops who
- 16:35view fills me with joy. All you are a dear, you know,
- 16:40right? Okay.
- 16:40So you interest in, you should I count as in all for it?
- 16:44Yes. I'm just going to turn down my
- 16:46TV so it's not blaring. So yeah, five Roots fourth,
- 16:52roots. Three years to boots and a
- 16:56single route. Go.
- 16:59All this out is great. And he yeah.
- 17:03Would you be tempted on the basis of this food advert?
- 17:08Well it's directly inspired by the Ali.
- 17:11G show that initial humble born with the spotlights.
- 17:14So no, from that perspective, I called like the Kaleidoscope
- 17:18effect. Yes, As much as that you don't
- 17:25know, nice and Placid creatures. I'm not sure I'd want one around
- 17:27the house but you know, I think we're invited.
- 17:32So think about how we are manipulated by advertisements
- 17:40because the people that come along later on that is awful
- 17:44business people. I don't know.
- 17:45I'll use all that we're kind of social point and say, oh are
- 17:48they awful appalling people? And then the episode makes a
- 17:52direct link between this story. And now we're, we are the people
- 17:57in the shop students buy clothes that are being made by people
- 18:01that are practically enslaved. Yes, and it's quite Only, there
- 18:07were something when I was dead. Did a bit of pre-reading up
- 18:09beforehand, and somebody made the point that quite
- 18:12interestingly in fires upon P? Donna's not Sophie's by slavery.
- 18:18She's Nora. She know, and that's awesome.
- 18:24Possibly. Mmm.
- 18:47Tenders and a deal over the years.
- 18:50And so I've does, you know, maybe order episodes of
- 18:52continuing dramas and things like that.
- 18:55Okay, I'm gonna stop terrible pedigree.
- 18:57No, he's still right? And I think that's probably why
- 18:59he could maybe stay in and do something.
- 19:01This is urgent that was instrumental in byker Grove to
- 19:04remember that. It's like a bug.
- 19:07Report byker Grove. Yeah, I was gonna leave you to
- 19:13meet the cinema forward and kiss the other man and there was
- 19:23uproar this is on children's TV. Yeah gosh I remember or should
- 19:26make a girl so vividly I reckon on the basis that keeps it cool.
- 19:30Rusty. I was like right?
- 19:31You can ride on to his route. Yeah, he's probably on his radar
- 19:34after that. Oh my God.
- 19:36How gorgeous does Katherine Hale?
- 19:37Expanded are in? The snow is great.
- 19:39I love when she gets that jacket.
- 19:43Can I ask you a question about the general enthusiasm of the
- 19:47TARDIS teams at this point in the show's history because as
- 19:50it's time they were like going to someone else kind of spit
- 19:56much in it. Yeah I think I might have found
- 19:59it slightly disingenuous almost when it was certain you know,
- 20:05certain things. Like when you've got talking
- 20:08about sort of things being may be sprayed on a bit too thick,
- 20:10you've got a rules. Start a new Earth gone.
- 20:12I love being here. I love being with you.
- 20:14It's wonderful and it just feels too much.
- 20:17Whereas you think you won't sign up you outside you do to me.
- 20:20All right it's just got a nice fluffy how
- 20:34now Garb and here comes the sports car of all spaceships or
- 20:41Space rocket. Hmm, I think it's just you
- 20:45compare it to Ferrari. She goes.
- 20:47Yeah, you love her. Honestly I should I didn't I
- 20:51didn't mind them being enthusiastic.
- 20:52Had a conversation with Simon Fraser on The Impossible Planet
- 20:55and so I literally went oh fuck off when they were laughing at
- 20:59beginning of that it right. Whereas I didn't think it was
- 21:03that bad. I thought it was, you know,
- 21:05thinking. Yeah.
- 21:05I think it depends. There's a keys and swear.
- 21:07It does great in some of these episodes.
- 21:09And you just think, you know, I love the use of the snow in
- 21:15this. I is really simply done.
- 21:19My really effectively sells the setting, I don't know where they
- 21:22filmed that dust real area, but it looks incredible is great.
- 21:28It was a concrete. Manufacturing plant.
- 21:33Are you work there of U-Boat? Me is how yeah?
- 21:36Me too hard graft like yeah I mean I'm assuming is somewhere
- 21:42called a for what you port. I think it was it's not far from
- 21:46Cardiff enemy. It's impressive enough.
- 21:49That when he does love Shores, I honestly, it feels like a great
- 21:52big like James Bond style setting.
- 21:55I think that's why it like visually seems quite arresting
- 21:59because they've obviously done a lot of filming in.
- 22:01In factories and disused warehouses, and things like that
- 22:04in the new series, but this looks so much more Grand.
- 22:08And it's like the bit later on, where you see that, massive
- 22:12spinning, industrial thing, whatever it is, that there is
- 22:17Loops, so huge. It is pausing in the classic
- 22:20seriously, use the location of whatever.
- 22:22It's got that, use it and a little bit more impressive and
- 22:26we just had Tim mcinerney. Thank you.
- 22:31I know. We have to say that as a skill,
- 22:34you've got the one paying Solana, the fellow playing the
- 22:38scientist who's from the friends of the end who to?
- 22:42Yes I I think all the guests cars equipment self really had
- 22:46Salalah has got like a sort of a poker face on the first half
- 22:51until she's kind of reveals that actually teaches about heartless
- 22:53or she makes well Cole Tim Market.
- 22:57He's a good mcinerney. I think he gets out a really
- 23:01terrific Force but he's just great and everything else we
- 23:04were in Black outer. Well, gorgeous so good,
- 23:07discovered a new element. We green and me purest mean and
- 23:15the fellow who plays the scientist.
- 23:16I think he's really undervalued because he's kind of really
- 23:19Twitchy and a bit awkward. Yeah, you can.
- 23:23Yeah, it's quite good because sometimes, you know, when you
- 23:25get the, you get the reveal some things, it's a bit too obvious.
- 23:29You've got somebody who's working undercover in these
- 23:32sorts of stories and commas, but he's a bit Twitchy and awkward
- 23:35does that because, you know, it could be read in a few different
- 23:38ways, you don't know, immediately that he's
- 23:40undermining this whole operation and has been for some time.
- 23:44So that when they reveal comes, it's actually it's are you to
- 23:47sort person that, you know, when you when you were in, you know,
- 23:50a moment of subterfuge or you're not telling the entire truth,
- 23:53you gave it to which it'll fire up guys today for her.
- 23:56Okay? That's like an honest reading of
- 23:58someone in that situation, he's In 10 years, trying to get into
- 24:00this place, you know. And then as soon as it, you
- 24:03know, if it's assuming he had survived him.
- 24:05If he stops being all twitches and he's out of the situation.
- 24:07Everybody's just spent ten years around him and he's getting
- 24:10twitching the whole ten years because you're getting sucked by
- 24:15a giant brain as you do. And I know I've never
- 24:18experienced it but that's an awesome.
- 24:22Yeah. What happens on the sphere?
- 24:28Did you see that? Don't know if you tell the
- 24:30person fall and she's talking to you and she doesn't quite know
- 24:35how to react with this weird alien, but she gives it a go and
- 24:39I love her for that. She's still human.
- 24:41It's like the fact that she's got this.
- 24:45She's got the ball, she front, but she's very Humane and
- 24:48compassionate and things like that.
- 24:52Always come through. And I think I remember when
- 24:54these said that she was coming back as a companion and
- 24:57everybody went oh God, no, no. After the runway, we braid, you
- 25:00think, well, that was in it all intense purposes going to be a
- 25:04one-off. Nobody assumed she would be
- 25:05coming back. Of course, he's going to come
- 25:07back and develop and grow as a character and everybody's come
- 25:12to lover. I think most people eat her
- 25:14words when she came, Back, but into partners in crime, I was
- 25:17completely sold to nobody and of Runaway Bride.
- 25:19I was there's that line that she says, where there on the street
- 25:22and she goes and then you made it snow.
- 25:24I mean, scare me to death. Yeah.
- 25:26I was like, she's really underplaying.
- 25:29It's like, she don't get me wrong.
- 25:30She's like, in some fucking pants.
- 25:31I win the first off the Runway. I want John Rishi think she's
- 25:35playing to their, but by the end of it she brings him all right
- 25:38down. And I'm like there's potential
- 25:40here. Yeah.
- 25:42Absolutely. Whether in the Tardis and he's
- 25:44showing During the formation of the earth.
- 25:47She's kind of whispering for all of that.
- 25:49See I'm like she's not killing these moment.
- 25:52She's really kind of serving. She sells them well and I think
- 25:55it's she seems to just have such a really strong reading of the
- 25:59character from the off and she knows that Don Jose over death,
- 26:05but if there's somebody like the doctor who really knows her
- 26:08shit, she's gonna stop and listen, he's gonna absorb what
- 26:12they've got to see if you're somebody who's going to be
- 26:14bullshitting her. She'll try and cut you down.
- 26:16She sees through people's nonsense and she does.
- 26:19Sometimes the doctor does bullshit and she will cut it
- 26:21down. Absolutely.
- 26:23She said when he says to her you're not going to tell those
- 26:25people in Pompeii. They're all gonna die.
- 26:27She's a lot, watch me. Yeah and she's yeah she's got
- 26:32such heart and she knows how to read people and I think that's I
- 26:35think that's why I love her so much as the fact that she really
- 26:39Jails well, with other characters and they seem to
- 26:41respond. Well, and that's as much
- 26:43Catherine teats performances at his the character.
- 26:46I think, the thing I love most about Donna is the fact that no
- 26:49matter what she does, and what she goes through.
- 26:52She still has an extraordinarily low opinion of herself right up
- 26:56until her last story, which is our nothing or nobody.
- 27:00I'm, and I'm just, like, you are the most incredible person.
- 27:04And then you say, you meet her mother enough times to know.
- 27:07I know why you think that? Some believe that telling you
- 27:10you're just a boy but you couldn't or life and when wilf
- 27:14says oh but she was better with you.
- 27:17Yeah, and then when Sylvia goes, I'll look after she's my
- 27:22daughter. I will baby goat.
- 27:23Maybe tell us, she's she's worth something every now and it's
- 27:26great stuff. Honestly is just 0 gets me every
- 27:30time something occurred, just that there was a brilliant
- 27:33cross-cutting of Solana advertising the uder, we're so
- 27:37Humane with you Dad. That is cross-cutting with one
- 27:40of the big hunted down in the complex.
- 27:42Yes, the pacing of that. See, that is Graeme Harper is
- 27:46best and it's fantastic. Oh, here we go.
- 27:51The sense fear. Yes.
- 27:55Doing a bit of marketeering of the of the Ood as well.
- 27:57It's Are you missing a lot of people are running watching the
- 28:01sensor rights office? Mmm.
- 28:07Is there a similarity between the sensor rights and the use?
- 28:11Big bald heads and they do delay.
- 28:15Yeah, I may be the extent of it though.
- 28:18I do like the cross-cutting of classic and new continuity
- 28:22though. I think that it makes makes the
- 28:24canvas feel bigger. And it's such a rare instance of
- 28:28it this time of the shore as well, to reference a anything
- 28:31from, from the Plastics classic era.
- 28:35So yeah, remember appreciating that is one of those sort of
- 28:38course, but like when the Micra turned up, Gridlock.
- 28:41I was like, yes, just validated bits of the classic serial the
- 28:46classic era. A mock-up.
- 28:48You know, stop. He's been disappearing lately.
- 28:51What has happened to the bees? Although I believe they've
- 28:54headed off the tan Boca scale or something.
- 28:56That's probably it. Yeah, it promised a lot that.
- 28:59Well, I'm not sure what game. Just facing the bezel, just
- 29:04fucks off and went. Well, you're in a lot of
- 29:05trouble. So yeah.
- 29:07Yeah. If I was a be, I probably did
- 29:08the same have to admit. I think believe that may be a
- 29:11reference to a Douglas Adams so long and thanks for all the fish
- 29:16for a pretty similar sort of thing.
- 29:18So yeah. Now, look at this now dollars,
- 29:21the only person in this story asking you to, are you happy to
- 29:25be slaves? Are you happy to serve?
- 29:31Do you think Ben asks them straight up?
- 29:34Well, she's bald and shit. Do you think this is because
- 29:38after The Impossible Planet and the Satan pit, the doctor just
- 29:43leave them all to die because they are beaut.
- 29:45Yes, I don't know if it is or not.
- 29:51It feels in some ways. This episode is sort of a
- 29:54Redemption for the doctor for having let you die at the end of
- 29:58the seat and pit. It however, this story a bit
- 30:01like use of and resigning when we did that, we were discussing
- 30:04how the doctrine Perry actually don't have a huge impact upon
- 30:09the goings-on and it's true of the doctor and Donna in this the
- 30:14you've got. What's his name?
- 30:15Dr. Ryder working away under this behind-the-scenes,
- 30:18manipulating the the circle around the Ood.
- 30:21Brain, are you all riiii--? Uh-huh.
- 30:25They wouldn't direct. They had they don't really
- 30:27directly. On the outcome of this story.
- 30:32But I do think they add that massive layer of heart and I
- 30:39don't know like the things would do know when she's crying
- 30:41things. Like that.
- 30:42Otherwise this would just be a muscle face, wouldn't it was
- 30:45just absolutely there there dumbs, not of explosion, the
- 30:48bear wrong. It's very exciting to think that
- 30:52but yeah, you're right. Yeah, it was when it dawned on
- 30:56me, I suddenly thought actually, yes, they if they hadn't
- 30:59arrived, this would more or less Balloon tie on the same way so
- 31:04that basically was nervous. Haha.
- 31:06Absolutely. They're just old friends.
- 31:07Companions should be rather than directly involved in the face of
- 31:11all these planets and histories. Have you noticed that he's got
- 31:16that camera down on the floor every single time someone's
- 31:20being violent like he's trying, he's showing how impressive that
- 31:23is that man standing here with his whip.
- 31:25You're basically we use because he's whipping down towards the
- 31:28camera and you're just getting drawn into the drama.
- 31:32Unless you're into that sort of thing, which case, then this
- 31:35episode takes a whole nother level, absolutely to their own
- 31:40got that very well. Yes.
- 31:42Yes, yes, yes. Do you want?
- 31:44Is that spinning thing? Yeah.
- 31:46What goodness knows whether the concrete mixer on a massive
- 31:50scale. No darling.
- 31:51Yeah, that makes sense. Um, I got a question for you
- 31:56about giant fallacies, Fire away onami fallacies the follows.
- 32:05Well, I hope you mean phallus because you you know, What about
- 32:09a giant brains? I'll put it that way.
- 32:11Well, thanks Gray's. Is that?
- 32:13That's something else. Well, I'm so dry brains.
- 32:17How do you turn up on top to every cat?
- 32:19Again? I believe we have one fabulous
- 32:22example in time and the Rani. Yes, that's probably one of the
- 32:26best big brains and daughter. Who are there any other giant
- 32:29brains? No, I mean, herpes is brain is
- 32:34probably above average inside Iraq.
- 32:38Bobby, the white not Gunk. Yeah, blasting on the floor.
- 32:43Yes, that's you do. That's just, I don't know my
- 32:46opponent. So my question is yes, nothing's
- 32:49do if Alice is a talk. So is, is that a bit Camp?
- 32:55What a story that is have an enormous brain in it?
- 33:01I would say. So, yes, it does there.
- 33:03It does seem slightly. Ridiculous when everything but
- 33:07that, but I think it probably helps undercut.
- 33:10The fact that the rest of the episode is quite Grim.
- 33:12Actually, there's a lot of, you know, we're talking about
- 33:16slavery, we've got torture, we've got rabbit creatures that
- 33:19are being condemned for their own good.
- 33:23Then this big pink cream, maybe there's maybe maybe I'd maybe
- 33:27time in the Ronnie has scarred us for life.
- 33:29For me, can't look at brains without thinking of them as
- 33:31being they contain. Can you see?
- 33:35Not worry. Wait for auction.
- 33:36Did you see the picture of it almost like 25 years later?
- 33:39It was a terrible State. I'll tell you what, it's almost
- 33:42got there in that incredibly living room now that giant
- 33:44decaying brain. That's like I would have it on
- 33:47the dining table. She's my prized possession.
- 33:52Yes, I'm on the Ronnie. Oh, yeah.
- 33:55Then you could say, you could do this.
- 33:57The rest of the koi Scottish on you.
- 33:59This guy's doctor the time for double on top of us.
- 34:04Mr. Sylvester is better than mine.
- 34:05Ever be, he's going to do a very good impression of the Seventh.
- 34:09Doctor always gets me. It's like I said, like a do yo
- 34:12mam. I think it really does.
- 34:16What's your opinion of these fabulous?
- 34:18Giant claw, Amusement machine said, I think it's one of the
- 34:24elements the episode that I don't like as much.
- 34:27I think perhaps because it is drawn out a bit too much.
- 34:30The sequence doesn't mean to be as long as it is.
- 34:33Right. Stop that.
- 34:35Uh-huh. I'm glad we're going now.
- 34:38Siri what Fraser Gregory said? I told you I was going to run
- 34:40this episode. Oh no.
- 34:43Are you telling me that we've got to a point in Doctor Who
- 34:46where we would have a special effect sequence as stunning as
- 34:50this? And we complain about Logan is
- 34:55what is going on at there's that it's no judgment upon the
- 35:00Artistry or the achievement but just in the sequences
- 35:05unnecessarily long as well realized but it's a little bit
- 35:08too long you know I'll just been all that Madness horrible guard
- 35:14who's are going. I've always wanted to do this
- 35:16right the joystick, very crazy, all his Brilliance.
- 35:21I listened to the commentary and the The commentary on this
- 35:24episode. It's with Graeme Harper and
- 35:27Roger Griffiths who paid me, please that character case I
- 35:31need just it seems like he had a whale of a time making it was so
- 35:34pleased to have been on Doctor Who and he had two young boys
- 35:38and they were like, Daddy, why are you doing this daddy?
- 35:41Why are you doing that? And it just I think it's quite
- 35:43nice that growing up as a young Doctor Who fan you all you ever
- 35:48heard was people seeing only what they really did it for my
- 35:50kids or my grandkids, you know, there's a student for himself.
- 35:53The kudos for doing it and then you've got people that still to
- 35:56this day. You know, it's like my kids were
- 35:57so thrilled that I did that Doctor Who.
- 36:00So it's quite nicely City. Sounds like you really enjoyed
- 36:02the experience. The best part was, when we got
- 36:04to be the complete fucking asshole of the show, you know?
- 36:07You go around killing everybody and there's something about new
- 36:12series who that there's not always something, you know, in
- 36:15the classic series, you have some really clearly defined
- 36:18villains? Yeah, they stand up so well
- 36:21there's fewer instances. This has allowed after 2005 was,
- 36:26I think in this episode, you've got how home and you've got case
- 36:31as sort of, you know, you've got to pretty nasty guys and very
- 36:35clear who they are and what they stand for.
- 36:38And I like that about it. I think that's probably why I
- 36:40like as well. But I think you know I asked you
- 36:42this question in case managers are me about me people who make
- 36:46you feel better comfortable, there is like very uncomfortable
- 36:49by his but he's very sweaty here and he's really excited to.
- 36:52Have you ever met And in your life, who is clearly quite angry
- 36:59or violent, but it's utterly constrained by the social
- 37:05niceties of their work. Or, you know, I mean, inside,
- 37:08you have to behave a certain way, they are clearly ready to
- 37:12let it out. And I thought the way he plays
- 37:14that part, is somebody who's been forced to play nice and all
- 37:18of a sudden, he's getting to shoot people go after People
- 37:23that your stick it is so sweet. Relish it.
- 37:27Hey, isn't it? Yeah.
- 37:30If I said well, oh yeah, it's a really good part.
- 37:33I think he plays it for all it's worth and I just feel the music.
- 37:37He was great, I was just on the edge of my seat.
- 37:39God, oh my God. Run bitch run.
- 37:44And it's the fact it's even that you don't really notice too
- 37:47much. The fact that he's obviously,
- 37:49just on a nice chair in a corner of the studio hates.
- 37:52Everything is just cupcake with the editing, isn't it?
- 37:55Yeah. Nice to see what he does here.
- 37:59It is, go, go, go, go, go, go. Go.
- 38:01And then it's absolutely silent. And that thing is just over it
- 38:04like right now over it. Thank you.
- 38:08And so some of the restrictions so good, it's so good.
- 38:12And then it's always the intercutting, you know, you've
- 38:14got Donna and in danger as well at the same time because I often
- 38:20you'd always, I feel like they really knew how to sell a set
- 38:23piece by this, boy, definitely, I think so.
- 38:26I think they've by this Force. Or that production team are so
- 38:31confident in their abilities. They know what they're doing, I
- 38:35mean know how to accomplish it. Well I got.
- 38:37Do you think the doctor's daughter is the the very dreary
- 38:42single example of theories for but I have seen you do that bit
- 38:46where she doesn't like flips over the lasers but they know
- 38:49how to do with that piece. Yeah.
- 38:51Oh definitely. Oh let's talk about this Solana
- 38:55and the choice. Yes.
- 38:57What do you think? It's such a good moment because
- 39:00normally it would be the point in the episode, where the doctor
- 39:03would say to somebody, this is your moment.
- 39:06This is your Redemptive moment, you know, come over to the good
- 39:09side. We've done this loads.
- 39:10We are having that. Yeah, you know, I'll go with
- 39:13you. Yeah, we're so accustomed by at
- 39:16this stage, but characters doing that essentially always the case
- 39:21of the doctor going. You know, this is your moment.
- 39:24And people always say yes and go along with it but don't she
- 39:27doesn't I think in the rusty Dave is here up he managed to
- 39:30surprise with moments like this my father more than anything
- 39:34that's come since its same about Harriet Jones in the Christmas
- 39:36invasion. You know it's the same with the
- 39:39air stewardesses midnight. They may choices you would
- 39:43expect them to make great television, going to go I think
- 39:48it's quite, it's quite good that they normal to, defy, the
- 39:52expectations now. And again, because there are
- 39:54there, things in Doctor Who that will come up over and over and
- 39:57over again by now, as I say we're so accustomed, you would
- 40:00expect her to just school. Yeah, of course, you're the good
- 40:03guy. I'm gonna side with you but she
- 40:05doesn't know him that well Deva they've met in the hospitality
- 40:09suite and she's got a major situation.
- 40:12They've spent minutes together and still no difficulty in.
- 40:16We know how this Supposed to go. So we're really just like Toby
- 40:21heydrich said that Linda with a, why was absolutely the
- 40:25unkillable character? Because she's gone on this
- 40:28journey with Christopher Eccleston.
- 40:29He's basic cited. You want to come with me and
- 40:31Mama my God she's gonna happen to the Tardis with me a bitch
- 40:34fight between home bro. It's going to be amazing but
- 40:36then of crap it's fucking the rain to say that I love the
- 40:45performance there. Asia gives you.
- 40:47See, the real expression Crossing her face, she's
- 40:51thinking this over, and obviously, weighing up the pros
- 40:54and cons of their situation, but she's obviously got a cushy,
- 40:58little life on the Ood sphere, why don't you give that up?
- 41:01So she thinks we'll get through this and I use girl, really.
- 41:03It's so high up in the business. She's doing.
- 41:07All right. She's crouching his.
- 41:09Mmm happened. Better watch out, he's gonna get
- 41:13her. I think of that boiler character
- 41:15could have gone either way. When she makes that call, I
- 41:19think even she looks a bit shocked.
- 41:21And then after that she's going, no, shoot to kill.
- 41:25Kill that I've made that call. I've made the wrong choice and
- 41:28I'm just gonna go with it now, you know, absolutely.
- 41:31And while everything's going to Shit around her basically,
- 41:37excuse, my French, but hey you've got this.
- 41:39You happy swear on this thing. Are you kidding me?
- 41:42I've said it once. I've said, I've already sworn a
- 41:44few times this evening, apologies.
- 41:45I shall try to read it or you have to spare more.
- 41:49Okay. I'm talking bullshit.
- 41:52Cool bikes, just the fact that you've got the food being sort
- 41:58of rabid as well, really sales there.
- 42:01It's hard, wasn't it? Yeah.
- 42:04Go ahead a rubber mask, awfully convinced or the absolutely
- 42:08sell. It tentacles flying all over the
- 42:11place body language because I don't think we've seen the bit
- 42:14yet where there's where there's one of the Ood pinning, a man
- 42:17down in. It's like
- 42:33I've heard writers. Say, John totally satisfied.
- 42:36Many epic finish. That sometimes will be Ryan for
- 42:38a character and the character surprises him in the decisions
- 42:44that he makes the mate. Like basically he's going on the
- 42:47part of that characters got off and then something happens, and
- 42:51it's almost like the character takes it down and I'll bomb.
- 42:54And I think I feel like she signed her death warrant when
- 42:57she makes that bad call. And I think even kicked
- 42:59everyone's life. Oh God.
- 43:01Hey, what's she doing here? Laughing about Cute, that's it.
- 43:06I think the character surprised, the writer there could be
- 43:10reading, funny things. And yeah, well, would be
- 43:13interesting to be interested to know for certain, if it was, was
- 43:17it an ambition to do that to defy the expectations?
- 43:20Or was it something that came up more as an incident?
- 43:23I've never known Keith Temple. Be interviewed wind you in the
- 43:26risers tail. I'll see.
- 43:28David's last review. I think that he rewrote 75% of
- 43:30this. So, like most of the scripts
- 43:33during his time. Yeah.
- 43:34Yeah, it does like, did he do schema polish by asking Mark
- 43:39about organs exterior to the body here now?
- 43:43Because a mutual friend of ours mr.
- 43:48Fraser Gregory cannot get past the fact that the who'd have
- 43:51this hindbrain which they hold in their hands and he says I
- 43:55know there's no way any creatures would ever evolve in
- 43:58this way. What are?
- 44:00You know, we're watching the science fiction, where we seen
- 44:02some pretty crazy shit over the last 50 years.
- 44:04Exactly. I think when 8v Drew my
- 44:07attention to that, I did start to think it was a bit comical to
- 44:10be honest, but I think if you get pulled along in the drama
- 44:14and you ignore the fact for evolutionary speaking, this is a
- 44:17nonsense. If you can look past that, it's
- 44:21fight, you'll still get swept along, but I'm yeah.
- 44:23Once you start thinking along the lines of, you know, what to
- 44:25do, when they go to the toilet, to the blade, the brain on the
- 44:28side or like the point of this is is shorthand for the fact
- 44:33that the vomit. That's it.
- 44:35Yes, you know and is crazy shit. Yeah, it's weird.
- 44:39Yeah. But you know a man literally
- 44:41peels off his scalp on the episode.
- 44:43This is a weird. Absolutely.
- 44:46And it's one of the probably the most I think when it comes to
- 44:48sort of body horror and horrific sort of biological goings-on,
- 44:53you've got these hanging brains being vomited up and skin being
- 44:56pulled off as fabulous. I love a bit of creature.
- 44:58Are, you know? Oh, it's not something that
- 45:00comes up in touch through very often either was a new series.
- 45:04This is Pretty strong for the new series.
- 45:06I think, even if moffatt's time where the scares were still
- 45:09pretty, they were scary without PG-13.
- 45:12He seems like Creature Feature. Head office quite for a full-on
- 45:18Do you think a guy's is a bizarre question?
- 45:20Do you think this is an angry left-wing message in this?
- 45:27Or do you think there are any right-wing leanings to how this
- 45:30is written? I don't know.
- 45:34I never quite know how to read these things because sometimes
- 45:37is it, you know, certain things can be an unconscious decision
- 45:40in the writing other people might, what you could do there
- 45:44are certainly other stories Doctor Who that are more
- 45:46strident in their political opinions and messages.
- 45:52I think it's it's not incidental in this but it's not as blatant
- 45:56as it might be another stories Like Oxygen where you've got a
- 45:59real Attack on capitalism or size chart.
- 46:03I think is tenants. I'm go.
- 46:05That's where like that bit there reason the cage is.
- 46:08Literally the slave going. Come on, come get me, he's
- 46:13selling the point. This is the sort of thing doctor
- 46:16who doesn't do it in general. Sera is is very apolitical.
- 46:21Now, I'm depending on whether you like that goes, they are not
- 46:24because if you know, it's like, it was I writing earlier, but
- 46:26some people just don't like, yeah, it's few environmental
- 46:31messages and series 12, isn't it?
- 46:33Yes, so be at the interesting to see what will come in, when
- 46:38Russell comes back. I'll not even a ghost town.
- 46:41Now, he knows what he can get away with.
- 46:43He's gonna be angry as. Did you see him at that
- 46:46conference? When he's thinking about the
- 46:48Tories, God, hate liars, and murderers and you need to be
- 46:53aware of this doctor who turns they're going down.
- 46:57So yes, I think there may be some interesting stories and
- 47:01some improper villains. Perhaps, but with a certain
- 47:04leaving so they knew, ya know, Patrick Harris camp meeting.
- 47:10Yes! That too is Carol that shot.
- 47:12She's got one of the Rails. Now, she's dead.
- 47:19She brought it upon herself. Don't worry Salona you're at
- 47:22your choice. Yeah, exactly.
- 47:23You belong onstage. The message is that if you
- 47:26choose to go with the dots are likely to bring her why you end
- 47:29up dead, if you choose to go against the doctor by Solana,
- 47:33you end up dead. Pretty much.
- 47:37Yes. But would you like to do that
- 47:38math? You're an adult who Adventure?
- 47:41You got a chance to the to impact the outcome, which way
- 47:45you're going to go. I'd probably go with the doctor
- 47:50assuming that money wasn't playing up.
- 47:53Well you got the moral High ground but you did.
- 47:58That's why I'd rather be in a story like, cast revolver.
- 48:01Nobody really dies in that little hypothetical people.
- 48:03I'll just Get a hangover like a jerk and hobble back to the
- 48:07Tardis and we'll be fine. You could say you made us mad at
- 48:10people but we are free. Yes.
- 48:13And swing from chandeliers as you that you don't just as
- 48:17normal evening, really asleep. Several of my house.
- 48:35Yes, I'm all definiteness. It's, I'm quite brutal.
- 48:39There's a nascent, quite unusual to have a lot of brutal and very
- 48:43over deaths in this era of Doctor.
- 48:46Who did you think he's doing that thing is, that's a great
- 48:49show. The Galaxy thing, I kind of way.
- 48:51So we don't lie, imaginations are worse or more brutal than
- 48:55anything they could ever show me.
- 48:57Absolutely. And I think, I think that's that
- 49:00works so well for a series like Doctor Who, because obviously,
- 49:03you can cross the Elaine too much if you are being too overt
- 49:09and nastiness. You know, when you've got other
- 49:12examples like Season 22 where you've got lots of blood and
- 49:14gore going on, it's something that's still being debated now.
- 49:19Whereas with this might break crass nastiness to divert from
- 49:24the fact they were making a load of shit.
- 49:27Yes. So sort of it I think it's
- 49:31something violence and Doctor Who something it's always going
- 49:33to be deleted. Some people would rather it was
- 49:36playful and Fantastical and brutality.
- 49:43If that's makes sense or you know, you go all out and you
- 49:46have it more adult and you see the consequences of your actions
- 49:50but that's as much an opinion of the writers and the showrunners.
- 49:54Yeah. And what they bring to the
- 49:56series and that's always, it's always change.
- 49:58Sometimes it can be really brutal.
- 49:59And then you've got Fantastical things or you've got Steven
- 50:02Moffat, we're practically, nobody bloody dies.
- 50:04Or if they do, they always get resurrected tedious, doesn't
- 50:07Hydra a good Massacre. Like this gorgeous.
- 50:10This is probably as close to the knuckles.
- 50:12They got. In terms of a lot of people
- 50:15dying in very violent ways portrait, and we were in Dalek,
- 50:18it's always one. They were a bit.
- 50:19Unsure about showing Dalek being tortured nowadays.
- 50:23Everyone's fair game. Yeah, yeah.
- 50:26And this is again, it's that sort of their seaward overtones
- 50:29where A lot of people are just getting killed brutally in
- 50:31there, so the verdict, however, they do have a bit more
- 50:35character to be fair. It's not like we're just going
- 50:37to get rid of you because you are now redundant.
- 50:39It's usually you know, Salon has danced for example that it's a
- 50:42part of the story and all else seems to feed in a bit better.
- 50:46Yeah, they're the right. People die in this weird thing
- 50:51to say but and they dying sort of awesome.
- 50:56I work in ways that are so Ting. So how they behave Solana?
- 51:02If possible to death. I just after she said, you know,
- 51:06go and kill all those people. He gets turned into a nude and
- 51:11then they choose to look after him, well, as punishment he
- 51:14could ever have because he was abusing you, you know, and
- 51:17you've got KS, who gets gassed. He was gonna gasps dude, like
- 51:21you know, he was going to leave them caged animals and gas them
- 51:24alive and they turn it on in this last time.
- 51:29Case managers all day. Yeah they're open.
- 51:31They're close. And that one also directed by
- 51:33crime. Huh.
- 51:34Yes. How people might be surprised
- 51:37where we got an extra night because there's no desert all
- 51:39win that one? Good point.
- 51:41Yeah, I'm okay. The giant brain and the markets
- 51:49thrown over the rails. Absorbed into the bright is
- 51:53hilarious. I needed a joke on this point
- 51:56and that was very funny. Oh yes, a straight.
- 51:59It's very the big brain. It doesn't just take me to time
- 52:02in the Ronnie old takes me to Bleak 7 and Ultra world.
- 52:06Oh no, it's not the one where the straw make dining room.
- 52:10Towerdive sex. Yes.
- 52:12Is this the native human mating ritual?
- 52:21That's a big campy. Bring Jesus our he's got full
- 52:25many, a giant brains have got form inside surface.
- 52:28This is a B-movie no called the brain.
- 52:30I've seen that. It's about this amazing Chat
- 52:33Show and they would have people on it and then stir up terrible.
- 52:37Emotions from even having an affair with what's up.
- 52:40But the brain is under the stage sucking in all the negative
- 52:44emotions is getting bigger and bigger before.
- 52:47I could take the whole building and then Braddock, leave the
- 52:49world. As a terrible shot of it
- 52:51literally it's so big. You can see it from space.
- 52:56I think I need to see this. I've got it you know I can't
- 52:58tell him bro watch that. All right we were watching
- 53:01Prestige television, will watch the brain.
- 53:04He's got time for Prestige television, these days.
- 53:07In fact, let's just watch all the brain Doctor Who stories and
- 53:09then we'll watch the brain. People aren't listening.
- 53:26Thank you for listening. So I'm going to say that about
- 53:36to be charts. I really want to watch it if you
- 53:38haven't been approved by the other countries, you want.
- 53:40Watch the good bits. But the way Tim mcinerney anke
- 53:49mcinerney mcinerney. I can a lot of people think it's
- 53:52Tim economic injury. Yes, I was gonna say a nice
- 54:02change, but how do you play being turned into a newt?
- 54:06Well, I think he just about gets it, right?
- 54:08Yeah. It's the it's the retching that
- 54:12comes. With it as well.
- 54:13It's horrible is really sales, edged property, the peeling of
- 54:17the scalp. I just can't ever get over that.
- 54:19I could just sit there and feel like it's a good job that
- 54:24they've got a massive version too blunt because if that had
- 54:27any bread, that would have been too much, I think the fact that
- 54:32it's just a sort of it was probably a loom or whatever it
- 54:34was they were using it sort of lube and peeled skin.
- 54:40Well yeah. On the back of this will be
- 54:44there is light hair about. I've never shot anyone before.
- 54:48I don't know if I'm going to like it.
- 54:50Well that's terrific line for a villain because he's he's
- 54:53doesn't mean it's not business. Nice lady, he's a villain.
- 54:56But he's not over on Dylan. Yeah, everything sort of a means
- 55:01to an end. I love that.
- 55:04He sort of goes from. He looks like he's having a baby
- 55:07and then he looks like he's going to bring up his dinner and
- 55:09he's just going through this whole rage.
- 55:11You know, that Red Wolf episode, where rimmer it's that fried egg
- 55:14Chilli, Chutney sandwich. It's a bit like that.
- 55:18It's for the whole gamut of emotions.
- 55:21It's basically how you and I feel could be watching.
- 55:24So, like the Timeless time, you know, we go through this whole
- 55:26range of all my gosh. How could you not?
- 55:31I spent a lot of it retching. But did you not like the really
- 55:35simple short of the tonic? Because it expresses his vanity
- 55:43so weak. I know he's a he's a bad bloke
- 55:46and he's in vain and he's insecure and he's insecure.
- 55:52Well, look at him, you were being so cute.
- 55:56So you bitch I mean look at that.
- 56:04Honestly, I mean he is a terrific actor and win for
- 56:10Doctor Who gave him. Oh, yeah, he's against Starla, a
- 56:13niche, or would benefit from if he turns up.
- 56:16It's all good. I'm sorry.
- 56:18Just killed his head off. Let's fire it up.
- 56:24I'll never apologize again. She gets a Great Liner.
- 56:28It's like watching an artist. I know what's right or wrong
- 56:30anymore. He goes.
- 56:31Yeah, that's probably for the best Olmec.
- 56:34Say yes, that's good cause she acts.
- 56:36Like she's not making any definitive judgment because what
- 56:39he's going for it rific. What he's done is also horrific.
- 56:43So is it the ends? Justify the means.
- 56:46Mmm. It's a, it's interested.
- 56:48In the short time should be traveling.
- 56:49With the doctor, she's had some big moral.
- 56:51Dilemmas already lets her belief System is rocked by his or her
- 57:00stuff. She experiences with the doctor
- 57:01and it, no wonder, she doesn't know right from wrong.
- 57:05Originally, I think this was supposed to come second in the
- 57:09ram viewed and they made a decision that it was actually a
- 57:13bit Grim, as a first step in space, but she's got a line in
- 57:16this. Where she says, I want you to
- 57:18take me home, which makes sense if that is her first trip in the
- 57:22Tardis. Yeah, and it actually makes
- 57:24sense of that first scene where they're kind of Find the ship to
- 57:27get one or lat. Hmm.
- 57:29I think this is sort of written to be the second episode but the
- 57:32web with bomb that's hardly a liar episode.
- 57:34Is it on pay? Yeah, because I think.
- 57:36Yeah. The think the certain little
- 57:37things like that are probably telling of the fact that he just
- 57:41moved in the shade Jewel because the whole moral dilemma the end
- 57:45of fires to Pompey, would probably rock me more than
- 57:50witnessing how big getting his comeuppance here as gory as it
- 57:53is. I'd be like, actually that's
- 57:54probably his Just Desserts. But fires upon P.
- 57:57If the person I was traveling with through time and space
- 57:59said, no, we've come back here and we're just going to let this
- 58:02disaster happen. I'd really be questioning their
- 58:05morals and their, their belief system, and my own beliefs in
- 58:09being around that person. What stunning is that giving a
- 58:13like really powerful emotional moments in every episode?
- 58:18Every single one and she sells it in every time.
- 58:21I don't think there's any moments for Catherine.
- 58:24T, doesn't get the Shouldn't right.
- 58:28I think the same where she's in the circle of mirrors with the
- 58:31beetle on her back and but I don't care about basil her
- 58:34perform. It's just I think it would be
- 58:36the best performance in Doctor Who where she's terrified or
- 58:40definitely. She's think one of the reasons
- 58:44that so many fans have really embraced her, even though she
- 58:47doesn't really get dr. Your science fiction at all is
- 58:50the fact that she played it as well as she could.
- 58:54She played it magnificently? He and made this character what
- 58:58she is and we embraced that I like my mom was also convinced
- 59:05when she came in by the end of the series buckets.
- 59:10I don't think many people laugh when she left the series would
- 59:14have thought it was a shame. She's not the best companion.
- 59:17Oh my God, it was thicker with the best of times, you know,
- 59:20brother, the king is awful, bloody comedy actress, the NSA.
- 59:26How many people went through that perception of her lips?
- 59:30I love the fact that again going back to talking about defying
- 59:33expectations. She came in and people thought a
- 59:35Catherine T differently after this probably what makes series
- 59:40for. He even more with the people had
- 59:42all those expectations and I will turn on the head.
- 59:46Yeah, absolutely. And I think no wonder the
- 59:48greetings. Just went up and up and up
- 59:49because I think she was a draw. And by the end of it, people
- 59:53loved her. I'm looking at some taro's in
- 59:57what looks like a gay disco at the moment.
- 59:58So I'm guessing this episode ended but get somebody off to
- 1:00:03this entire in gay. Disco we go.
- 1:00:05There's a lot of purple lie about sontaran episode, isn't
- 1:00:07it? Yeah, that's one of the sort of
- 1:00:10aesthetic things about the Russell T, Davies zero that
- 1:00:12started to really bother me by this by the end was the last log
- 1:00:16scale so we use it. Yeah sometimes it was really
- 1:00:18really over. It's like so so this entire
- 1:00:21story is very much turquoise and purples, 42, everything is Red
- 1:00:25and orange and understandably, they're approaching a son.
- 1:00:29It's so blatant in a way that it just, I felt that it came to
- 1:00:35hinder the story somehow, but that's just how my brain would
- 1:00:37get that. You know, I got together.
- 1:00:40I mean, I feel like he knew how to fill the square root pretty
- 1:00:43images but yes, it could be a little bit.
- 1:00:47Like, do you ever have like, 7 episode?
- 1:00:49We're going up down that staircase and it's literally the
- 1:00:52same stay, just change the lighting.
- 1:00:54Kind of jail just checking that everything just gets darker as
- 1:00:57big all day. I've been looking over his
- 1:01:00shoulder blades right. Nick some of these tricks.
- 1:01:03Yeah, this way it worked for them in 1970.
- 1:01:05Whatever it was we probably got better.
- 1:01:07Just bet. This is something that my
- 1:01:09characters I'm past. I forgot.
- 1:01:11It was like we just got better at making television as well.
- 1:01:13So the cinematography now is movie standard, you know, it's
- 1:01:17where is it kind of wasn't 2008 or whatever this was and it's
- 1:01:22amazing to think how much television Has evolved in really
- 1:01:26short space of time actually. And sometimes it's under
- 1:01:30appreciated. It's still, it's still an art
- 1:01:32form television, and what it's for ever evolving and goodness
- 1:01:36knows what the next. Well, could ya quiet VR?
- 1:01:41Helen your plug yourself in Doctor Who we didn't
- 1:01:46commentaries? But I'll be sitting there,
- 1:01:48swearing under my breath, going what?
- 1:01:49That know? If you could actually plug
- 1:01:53yourself in any Doctor, Who story?
- 1:01:54Hire a VR helmet. Where would you go?
- 1:01:57I've got our straight away. God won't you guys probably the
- 1:02:00five doctors. I would just want to be in
- 1:02:01amongst all that. Oh, that's good choice.
- 1:02:05It just, you know, Rocco. We are to the spiraled and
- 1:02:08jungle planet of the Daleks just because it's my ultimate Comfort
- 1:02:12Doctor. Who story, you know?
- 1:02:14Got to be careful though. You might come back with a
- 1:02:15fungal infection. It's been nice to happen.
- 1:02:18Don't worry, I'll pray. Okay, good deal with those now.
- 1:02:21Well, that's okay, he'll speak planet.
- 1:02:25The Earth is a planet of the Daleks.
- 1:02:27Thank you, has it. It would you indulge me in?
- 1:02:32Give me three reasons, we'll do it.
- 1:02:35One a piece back and forth as to why you would recommend this
- 1:02:39episode. And you go first we didn't even
- 1:02:46touch on it at all. I'm going to say marigolds score
- 1:02:51in this one. I think it's a little bit more.
- 1:02:54It's a some bits of it are a little more different than the
- 1:02:57usual sort of scores that he was delivering at this time.
- 1:03:02You've got slightly more sympathy sounds alien and quirky
- 1:03:05sounds in the mix. Which helps sell the fact that
- 1:03:10this is another world and it's something otherworldly in
- 1:03:12different compared to the more contemporary earthbend.
- 1:03:15Stories were used to hearing about the aesthetic, some of the
- 1:03:18direction, the music, it gives it a feel of a classic Doctor
- 1:03:21Who it really does. I think, I think, It's taking
- 1:03:25you to a world which the series at this point, is veered away
- 1:03:29from not being able to realize and then they go for it and
- 1:03:33suddenly everything else and try.
- 1:03:35They're really trying to sell the idea that you're on another
- 1:03:37world. Instead of do that Utopia where
- 1:03:40the, where they were. I remember when that came out
- 1:03:42and the Russell T Davies was trying to sell it as it's one of
- 1:03:45our first proper alien worlds. Your locates.
- 1:03:47A quarry at Ma Maison. It's really obvious that it's a
- 1:03:51quarry at night, but they're please rise for a reason.
- 1:03:54Why? Because They work just work.
- 1:03:56Yeah. Now he's got boy, is a quarry
- 1:03:59that's covered in snow or I think, yeah, we're waiting a
- 1:04:02nice Planet. I'm going to say the action that
- 1:04:06in this, which I didn't know about too much, but I think it
- 1:04:10is terrific realized. And I think, especially in the
- 1:04:13climax where there's big long shots of that that setting
- 1:04:20concrete plan and there's explosions going off as stunts
- 1:04:24happening. Reminds me of one of those old
- 1:04:26partly stories where they just for all the money at the action.
- 1:04:30In fact, he reminds me of the end of series ever watched
- 1:04:32Buffy. Mmm, that's all.
- 1:04:37I have this thing called the initiative, right?
- 1:04:38And I did his great big bomb base and they have Buffy weave
- 1:04:43through this enormous warehouse. And there were explosions and
- 1:04:46stuff, all sorts going on around her.
- 1:04:48And this kind of matches that I just, I just think it there's
- 1:04:53money on screen, and the Action is stunning.
- 1:04:56Yeah, the verbs that they sold it at me.
- 1:04:58That's great. Next point.
- 1:05:02I think we've some of the things have already touched on by
- 1:05:04lawyers, right? Repeat yourself.
- 1:05:06Yeah. I think it's the quality of the
- 1:05:09guest cast. It's quite a small cast.
- 1:05:12Actually when you think about the number of speaking parts
- 1:05:14that are in it, but Tim mcinerney.
- 1:05:19Absolutely sales his Rule and you've got Solana and dr.
- 1:05:24Ryder and KES, great parts and you've got the guy that please.
- 1:05:29Mr. Called gesturing towards treat.
- 1:05:31His name's gone. He gets killed bumped off of
- 1:05:33them at the very start, but he even, even his short scene
- 1:05:36completely sold. You've got this cynical sort of
- 1:05:41businessman, who's you know, muttering under his breath,
- 1:05:44through the he completely sells his character in that one short
- 1:05:48scene. Cricket guess cats.
- 1:05:50It's a underappreciate guests are.
- 1:05:52So I think this people point at things like Naidu what some RZ
- 1:05:56possible planning and things like that, where, you know, that
- 1:05:59those are really impressive and so group of access in both of
- 1:06:03those. But yeah, I think some of these
- 1:06:05sort of mid season episodes. The quality of the acting is
- 1:06:10underappreciated. Oh yeah.
- 1:06:13Okay, my second one then is going to be it's going to be the
- 1:06:18zingers that here. And I'm absolutely sure it's
- 1:06:22rusty though. This cryptic it's the jokes,
- 1:06:24when they come in, they're not many of them, but when they do
- 1:06:27come, but which is, why should I miss?
- 1:06:30Well, it's single to you. No, no, we're not married.
- 1:06:35You know. All that even like, Donna, with
- 1:06:37possible. It's very touching, but it's
- 1:06:39very funny as well. So, how she plays it.
- 1:06:43So, I think the jokes that are their kind of that Feller
- 1:06:47falling into the brain. Funniest thing in the whole
- 1:06:51website. So, yeah, I think, I think that
- 1:06:54humor is there, and it does add another layer to see you're
- 1:06:59already very late, which would bring me to basically flagging
- 1:07:05up how brilliant Catherine teaches in this.
- 1:07:07You've got a great comic actress.
- 1:07:09She's this is only her second regular episode that she's shot
- 1:07:13at the series. You would not, you can't fault
- 1:07:16her at all. She doesn't look like she's over
- 1:07:18debt. That she's nailed it, she's
- 1:07:21pretty new to the show. Pretty new to Syfy.
- 1:07:26Wouldn't date that, you know, she's Jake would have every
- 1:07:29faith in her. I imagine when they were looking
- 1:07:31at Russia's, they were thrilled. I refresh it out fucking clue.
- 1:07:34What was going on, though? She thought the sontarans were
- 1:07:37battery-powered. She didn't know they're actors.
- 1:07:40I mean, I think that's a joke that's been done.
- 1:07:41I think it might be slightly exaggerate exaggerate.
- 1:07:43Yeah. The top given the fact that she
- 1:07:49had. No, she was now that makes me
- 1:07:58imagine imagine if they brought back.
- 1:08:13So my third thing is going to be the character of Solana who you
- 1:08:19could probably easily forget. I think she's wonderful
- 1:08:21frapping. The actress is great because you
- 1:08:23sir and but like I love her. Early stages.
- 1:08:26The episode every time I log goes off, she happen to think of
- 1:08:29another excuse as to why there's a narco and then she sort of
- 1:08:32tells the camera guys. Well yeah, things are really
- 1:08:36telling, if you look in her eyes, they are seeing everything
- 1:08:39that her baby, her face, and her voice isn't.
- 1:08:42I know for a fact that you had me at some point in our lives,
- 1:08:45you know, where, where our eyes are down with theater around,
- 1:08:47with the smaller basically, fix this problem, it's finding or
- 1:08:54the alarms. And then and then you think
- 1:08:57obviously she's gonna go down One path and she makes a really
- 1:09:00really silly choice but the surprise the doctor and Donna
- 1:09:05and the audience and I think the writer.
- 1:09:08So I think she's one of the most surprising characters in this
- 1:09:10period of Doctor Who. And yeah, I really really
- 1:09:13interesting and I'm forgotten about as well.
- 1:09:16Yeah, we treat it I think revisiting it after a spell of
- 1:09:21not having gone back to watch this series at all seeing just
- 1:09:24how strong Excellent. This is like, we say back at the
- 1:09:27star, I think the reason it's not held in such high, regard is
- 1:09:32purely because it's got so much competition.
- 1:09:34I think maybe it's time for some people to re-evaluate it II.
- 1:09:38Don't want to cast any aspersions about what came
- 1:09:40later? Yeah.
- 1:09:42Well I have some troubling times it.
- 1:09:44The more fear I liked Chris Shipley or a lot, I feel there
- 1:09:48are a lot of problems. I would like to imagine in those
- 1:09:53areas a Time. When this is one of the weaker
- 1:09:57episodes of the Season. Yeah, it's quite telling I think
- 1:10:02this is an era of Doctor Who where consistency and continuity
- 1:10:07and strength of character is always key to the show and it's
- 1:10:12probably not something that other show Runners were as
- 1:10:15strong, a keeping at the Clown. Posse Davis, Phil Collinson, and
- 1:10:20Julie Garber. And they were there throughout
- 1:10:22the ROM. But I feel like they steered the
- 1:10:24ship can Distillate and they worked together.
- 1:10:28So, well, to make it properly like they were saying by this
- 1:10:34stage of the production like four years in, there's no
- 1:10:38stopping them. They're going from strength to
- 1:10:39strength, everything every year, you can see that learn something
- 1:10:42and they're going back to do it again or better or bigger or
- 1:10:45Bolder because they know how to do it and they're learning as
- 1:10:49they go along but the absolutely sell what they do.
- 1:10:52Every time the next Doctor ad planner Have you date surprised
- 1:10:57me so much because they're searching.
- 1:10:58Don't you bloody mrs. Yeah, I think Phil Collins had
- 1:11:02left by that stage. Well maybe he was even though he
- 1:11:05was. Yeah so that they're ready for
- 1:11:07this this little round? Yes, sir all boards.
- 1:11:09Well, I will look after was a good that great justice story, I
- 1:11:15hope so, I've been a pleasure but I wish these tell people now
- 1:11:19where we're heading off to next. It's a bit chilly.
- 1:11:21I think that's good coffee. Yeah.
- 1:11:25Hello. You little bit Frost going on
- 1:11:27and I probably shouldn't have chosen a short skirt for this
- 1:11:29beach but we're going for Fury from the deep now.
- 1:11:35Mary, the pipeline waiting, boom, boom, boom, boom.
- 1:11:44So six episodes. Animated close sort out there.
- 1:11:50Are you as excited as I am? I kept a decius so I thought you
- 1:11:56seemed a little nervous and other Ventures lately.
- 1:11:58You know, I've got a feeling that this one might finish you
- 1:12:01off. It might do, I'll scream my way
- 1:12:03through it if I have to and our weaponize it.
- 1:12:06All right. Oh gosh, that sounds like a
- 1:12:08deal. Well, thank you so much for your
- 1:12:11time and I just think the say until next time until then, bye.
- 1:12:19Bosh eyebrow.
