- 0:07The 1959 All-Star Game was the first year in which the MLB held an All-Star Game doubleheader.
- 0:13The first game of 1959 was held at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh, and the second game would be played a month later in Los Angeles.
- 0:20This experiment of two All-Star games continued for just four seasons. The league returned to just one annual game in 1963.
- 0:28In this first game of 1959, the American League starts 39-year-old veteran early win, while the National League goes with 22-year-old Don Drysdale.
- 0:37You can find links to more info on the featured players, teams, and stadium in the episode description.
- 0:42Also, please be sure to like and subscribe in order to help out our channel. Enjoy the game.
- 0:49From Forbes Field in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the Gillette Fancy Razor Company welcomes you to the 26th All-Star Baseball Game.
- 0:56Hello there everybody, with Jack Brickhouse. This is Bob Brent, ready to bring you the mid-season baseball classic between the outstanding players of the American and National Leagues.
- 1:06As a sincere thank you to the men and women who buy Gillette products, we broadcast the outstanding sports events of the year for your enjoyment,
- 1:13including the World Series, the World Invitational Match Game Bowling Championship, Blue and Gray Football Games, the Rose Bowl, the Kentucky Derby, and the feature fight of the week every Friday night.
- 1:25This, ladies and gentlemen, is Forbes Field in Pittsburgh. No longer is Pittsburgh the smoky city, but instead one of the most beautiful and dynamic of them all.
- 1:34The field was built by a German immigrant named Bonnie Dreyfus back in the year 1909, 50 years ago.
- 1:41So this means that on this, the 200th anniversary of the great city of Pittsburgh, we also have the 50th anniversary of Forbes Field.
- 1:48Bonnie Dreyfus had moved his ball club to Pittsburgh from Louisville at the turn of the century, then proceeded to win three straight minutes,
- 1:55after which he very pridefully decided that by golly, his players and fans deserved a new ballpark.
- 2:00He picked one of the most fashionable sections of town known as Oakland, and fought the good fight through until he saw his dream come true, and they broke ground in 1909.
- 2:10Four months later, in record time, they opened the gates, and they named it Forbes Field after the Revolutionary War figure General John Forbes, who had camped his army here.
- 2:21So here we are now, 50 years later, half a dozen war years later, and of course, ready to enjoy one of the great things in our way of life that's been saved by all those tragic wars.
- 2:32Baseball indeed is underway, as now, ladies and gentlemen, the vice president of the United States makes his appearance down the left field line.
- 2:41As he enters with the presidents of both leagues, and everyone concerned through a standing ovation on this brilliant, sunshiny, warm afternoon from Pittsburgh,
- 2:51Commissioner Ford Bricks, President Warren Giles, President Joe Cronin, members of the Secret Service,
- 2:58and the first gentleman, Joe L. Brown of the Pittsburgh Parks and Party, here with the vice president at home plate, and they will pop out, of course, in this free ceremony, the first ball.
- 3:08And down below, also, in the group, Mr. Branch Rickey Sr., one of the great names of all time in the world of baseball.
- 3:16Late ceremony, the governor of Pennsylvania, the honorable David L. Lawrence, is also down below, and is being congratulated by all the umpires, and he in turn congratulating them.
- 3:26The 26th renewal of the tremendous All-Star Classic that had its birth in Chicago now comes on, has had only one interruption, some seven years or more ago, here in Pittsburgh.
- 3:37They played, in fact, a little longer than that, the first night game in this area of the All-Star Classic, and previous to that, they had gone into the All-Star Game at night in Philadelphia.
- 3:48Many of these things will be passing your way as the broadcast gets underway.
- 3:53The home team will be the National League All-Stars, therefore, let's go to the American League batting order.
- 3:59In left field, batting number one, Minnie Minoso of Cleveland.
- 4:03Batting in the number two spot is playing in second base, on the White Sox, Nellie Fox.
- 4:08In the number three spot, the center fielder of Detroit, Al Kaline.
- 4:12Batting clean-ups from the New York Yankees, playing at first base, Luce Schowren.
- 4:17In right field, the rifle-like arm of Rocky Colavito of the Cleveland Indians, batting number five, Gus Priandos of Baltimore, will be the opening catcher, batting number six.
- 4:27That is in the lineup, the sensational home run hitting rookie of the Washington Senators, third baseman, Harmon Killibrew.
- 4:33At short, batting in the number eight spot, Louis Aparicio of the Chicago White Sox.
- 4:40And early wins, the great pitcher, with a record of 11-5, will be on the hill.
- 4:46He also, as you know, of the White Sox.
- 4:49For the National League home team, John Temple of Cincinnati leads it off and plays in second base.
- 4:55Batting in the number two spot, the home run swatter far out of the line of Milwaukee Braves, Eddie Matthews, at third.
- 5:01Henry Aaron in right field, bats in the number three spot of Milwaukee.
- 5:05The incomparable Willie Mays of San Francisco plays center field, bats number four.
- 5:10Ernie Banks is the shortstop, and he bats in the number five spot, Ernie Banks of Chicago.
- 5:16First baseman, Orlando Cepeda, will bat in the number six spot.
- 5:20As they are now introducing the American League All-Stars, Ted Williams, the last name to be introduced.
- 5:25Paulie Moen in left field of the Los Angeles Dodgers, he's playing in the number seven spot and hitting there.
- 5:32Dale Crandall catches, batting here, the Milwaukee Braves, and of the Los Angeles Dodgers,
- 5:37the fine young right-hander Don Grosjeel with a record of nine and six.
- 5:42And now to bring him on, the fine voice of WDN in Chicago, the young gentleman who is the fine sportscaster for the White Sox and the Chicago Cubs, Jack Brickhoff.
- 5:53Thank you very much, Bob.
- 5:55All right, as Bob Friess gave you the starting lineup, we won't have to do that again, but in case you didn't miss it when they come to bat, of course, you can box us out in case you want to score the ball game.
- 6:03The temperature is 80 degrees. It's just a beautiful day in Pittsburgh.
- 6:07When we came in from the airport yesterday, it was raining, and as we approached town from the airport, it got even heavier than ever, and we were a little nervous, and so was the cab driver, and so were the people down top.
- 6:18But the weatherman was very confident all the way through, and it turned out that his confidence was based on some real authority, because this day has gone bright and beautiful.
- 6:27We have a sun-stayed field. We have one of the most colorful settings, one of the most colorful settings, that's possible to imagine in the world of sports.
- 6:34Therefore, we're going to be real, real happy for the rest of this afternoon with the excitement that's going to be generated here at the 26th All-Star Game.
- 6:43As Bob told you, Vice President Nixon is here to throw off the first ball. He's standing up down there, the bots, right now, while the introductions of the squad continue.
- 6:52He is flanked by the Commissioner of Baseball, and also I know this one child, President of the National League, and the new President of the American League, Joe Cronum, also down there.
- 7:01The chairman of the board of the American League is also here, Will Harris, from Chicago and from Willmatt.
- 7:08We have people from just all over the United States of America here at this game today, although of course the majority of them will be rooting for the National League, because after all, most of them are from Pittsburgh.
- 7:17Ladies and gentlemen, our national anthem.
- 8:47Get ready now for the Vice President to throw off the first ball. It'll happen in the next moment or so. I believe he may post one here for the photos.
- 8:53And believe me, there's a real quam of photographers down there near the President, the Vice President, Joe Fox.
- 8:58Bob, what are the ground rules in this ballpark?
- 9:06Well, they're very simple and very brief. It's a ballpark that if any ball hits the front of the rail, bounces up into the double.
- 9:13And only that, anything that hits over the left field scoreboard, the clock, and the light tower is above the height of the wall on the home run.
- 9:20And the lines along the side are in play, even into the dugouts on both first and third.
- 9:25And players may climb up on the tarpaulin and catch a ball as long as they remain only on top of that.
- 9:31They're going over everything down below, and the Vice President has made several touches.
- 9:35For the benefit of the photographers, Dale Crandall will be the man to receive. And there it is.
- 9:40And now we get it underway. Let's pause ten seconds for station identification.
- 9:46WGY, eight, ten on your dial, and WGSM, connect. Let's move this down the round.
- 9:51This ballpark is ideally situated for those that are great hitters of triples and doubles.
- 9:56It is not a good home run hitting ballpark normally.
- 9:59There have been only five homers struck over the right field position.
- 10:02It goes 300 feet down the right field line, but goes up a good 120 feet over that.
- 10:07And we're in that catastrophe, indeed, because it will take two paces to free that area up with the ballpark.
- 10:14And I'll do one good job, and I'd pure
- 10:31I'll be on crowded shortest of shapes.
- 10:34hitting ballpark normally. There have been only five homers struck over the right field
- 10:38position. It goes 300 feet down the right field line, but goes up a good 120 feet over
- 10:43that. Jack Brickhuis, when I'll bring you up to date on that information a little later
- 10:47on. It falls out to 375. From 300 to 375, there's a screen in the right field deck.
- 10:53The balls hit off that, of course, are merely in play. Then it goes to 436 and 437 in dead
- 10:58center. The deepest part of this ballpark is in left center, 457 feet away, on a 20-foot
- 11:04wall. It is 406 over the left center side, 365 down the left field line, and a high scoreboard
- 11:10of some 30 feet that must be cleared. The ideal weather conditions prevail. This is
- 11:15nothing in the way of a hitter's win today. Just a beautiful afternoon for baseball,
- 11:20and we're so delighted to be able to present it to you on this, the 50th anniversary of
- 11:24Forbes Field, and of course, the 200th anniversary of the city of Pittsburgh. Now, as the last
- 11:31remaining shredded dot goes on, right down here, we'll be getting it underway in just
- 11:36a moment. And here to call the front four and a half of this 26th All-Star Classic,
- 11:41the veteran sports catcher of the White Sox and the Cubs, Jack Brickhuis. Down along the
- 11:46sidelines, early win, the last fellow off the field has just thrown a final warm-up
- 11:50shot to Yoki Berra. Yoki took over in place of Ray Berry, the White Sox pitching coach
- 11:57on Wolfman Catcher, who has been designated as the warm-up or batting practice catcher.
- 12:03Sam Derren had that job for the National Leaguer. The umpires have taken their stations. Al
- 12:09Bonik of the National League will be at the plate. Here come the National Leaguer down
- 12:13on the field. Taking their positions now, Wally Moon to left field, Willie May to center
- 12:21field, Hank Aaron to right, Eddie Matthews to third, Ernie Banks to shortstop, Johnny
- 12:27Temple in second, Orlando Cepeda at first, Drysdale will pitch the ball game to start
- 12:31with. He'll work a minimum of three innings, rather a maximum of three innings. And the
- 12:36other players, named by the ball players themselves, will work a minimum of three innings. Del
- 12:45Delano catching the ball game. Now the National League coaches and the American League coaches
- 12:52have both been posted out here for some time. Coaching for the American Leaguers will be
- 12:58Harry Kraft of the Athletics, who will be working at first, and Tony Cucinello of the
- 13:03Chicago White Sox will be taking up a very familiar post for him, third base coaching.
- 13:08The batting players, as I said, are Al Bonik of the National League. Joe Paparone of the
- 13:12American League will be at first. Augie Donatelli of the National League at second, and Ronnie
- 13:16of the American League will be at third. And on the far line, John Wright of the American
- 13:22League is watching those balls down the left field line, and Shag Crawford of the National
- 13:26League doing the same thing down the left. In the batter's box right now is Vinnie Minosso.
- 13:31Drysdale has won nine and lost six. It's one of the most promising young pitchers we've
- 13:35ever seen. Here's the first pitch of the ball game, his fifth. There's a drive deep to center
- 13:39field going way back for this Willie Mays, and he pulls that one in out there, about
- 13:43390 feet from the plate. Minosso, a 297 hitter with 13 homers and 51 runs batted in,
- 13:52with no time taking a good, healthy cut at pitch number one of this game. That will bring
- 13:57up the second baseman of the Chicago White Sox, Nelson Foss. Foxy, a 330 hitter, is among
- 14:02the leaders. He has two home runs and 41 runs batted in, and for him, the most unusual statistic
- 14:08is that on the eye totally, second only to seven riders on the White Sox, it runs batted
- 14:12in. There is strike one ball. Down Drysdale, we just saw throw 11 strikeouts at the Chicago
- 14:20Cubs back at Wrigley Field over the weekend. Has won nine and lost six. He throws sidearm.
- 14:25There's a fly ball foul down the third base side and drops just out of reach of a few
- 14:31of those fans down there, but also out of reach of the left fielder, Wally Moon, the
- 14:35third baseman, Matthews, and the shortstop, Bang, to also race out there. The low seats
- 14:39shut out pretty far onto the field, and there is a blank area, a ground area there, which
- 14:43is foul territory between the end of the bottom seat down the third base side and the beginning
- 14:48of what might be called the grandstand section extending on out into left field. Good spot.
- 14:53Oh, there's another foul off the left side, Fox. That one winds up for just a moment on
- 14:59the third deck. This is a triple deck stadium, by the way. And now, Dale Crandall, the catcher,
- 15:06has gone on to have a little talk with Drysdale. This kid throws aspirin tablets when he's
- 15:10right. He throws sidearm, and the way he became a sidearm, which is a little interesting to
- 15:14me, I happen to ride on the plane with Don from Chicago yesterday. He told me he developed
- 15:18a sidearm delivery as a second baseman in high school throwing sidearm normally. This
- 15:23is one arm. Fox struck out. There's a rarity. Elton Fox strikes out. He rarely ever does
- 15:27that. That's two downs. Brings up the center fielder, K-Line, a very courageous ball player.
- 15:32A fellow who's made a great comeback from a most painful and most distressing injury.
- 15:36He was hit by a relay ball on a double play. A first base was deflected off the first baseman's
- 15:43glove and it cut his cheekbone, broke the bone. He's been shot down pretty good. It's
- 15:48stitched up pretty well on this one. He's hitting 3.44. He just got back in action recently.
- 15:53He's taken over center field for Jimmy Dyches Detroit Tigers. He's done a marvelous job.
- 15:57He has 15 overs and 50 runs founded in. There's a curveball strike, a fast curve. Drysdale
- 16:02has about three feet on the curveball, and Don himself, strangely enough, thinks that
- 16:06he throws one of those curveballs three quarters overhand, but his own teammates keep assisting
- 16:10him still a sidearm pitch. He can't see it that way. That's a little outside. A good
- 16:15fastball. His fast curve is a real hummer, and that fastball, of course, when he's on,
- 16:20is very, very difficult to even speak. Drysdale, I might point out, came a farther last Friday.
- 16:26He hasn't seen that daughter of his yet. At one, 53 weeks old. Inside pitch, takes his
- 16:31back, got away. Count on the batter is the ball three and strikes one to Kalei. Two out.
- 16:36Nobody on base for the American Leaguers in the first inning. People still streaming into
- 16:40the ball park. Sunday's famous warm field and pitch first. Drysdale gets his side. Here's
- 16:49the motion. Wides up. Sidearm pitch. Kalei. Strikeout. Don Drysdale leaves the National
- 16:58League in strikeout to jump short wide. No runs. No hits. No errors. Nobody left, and
- 17:03we have the National League coming to bat at the moment. Now the American League takes
- 17:06the field. So at the middle of the first inning, the score is nothing to nothing. 50 years
- 17:10ago, the Pittsburgh Pirates first played baseball in this grand old park yesterday, way back
- 17:14in 1909. For the fun of a take, again, since how many Gillette razors were sold that year.
- 17:19All that? Well, it was actually only 385,000. A far cry from the nine million that you people
- 17:25won last year. And the way you're taking to bat you, Gillette 195, adjustable field view
- 17:30records will be set in 1959. But more than that, the Gillette adjustable means anything
- 17:34you ever laid against your face for all-out shaving comfort. Here's why. There's an adjusting
- 17:39color on the handle if you turn to any one of nine different degrees of edge exposure
- 17:43and angle. Turn this color one way, you get less blade edge. Turn it the other way, and
- 17:48more blade edge is exposed. Light beard, sweaty beard, tender skin, no matter what. You're
- 17:53guaranteed clean, long-lasting shades that comfort this something, really something.
- 17:58The Gillette 195 adjustable is so popular, many stores are out of stock. If you have
- 18:03trouble finding it, order one now from your dealer. You'll be receiving a new supply as
- 18:07soon as production permits. Only $1.95 complete with Blue Blades sensor and travel case.
- 18:12Leading off in the first inning, in the batting box now is second baseman Johnny Temple.
- 18:19Cincinnati's great second baseman. 326 hitter, four molars, 32 runs batted into the air.
- 18:28The picture early win of the Chicago White Sox, he won 11-0 off five so far this year,
- 18:32a 260 major league victory for this great, great performance. Triando, Sekecha, Jason
- 18:37and Seydl, we'll set those alpulas, gengulas in a moment there. The curveball, strike, strike
- 18:42one win. Of course, still has a fast flow, but it's not the real plays, there's a dry
- 18:46zilp roll, but he now resorts the guile and he has about as much root cutting as any picture
- 18:52you could possibly name. Curveball, one under the five, straight away to center, K-line
- 18:59goes back, it doesn't stop, reaches up, takes it. Set the line, one straight away to center,
- 19:03field about 340 feet from the plate. One away, the batter is Eddie Matthews, the long ball
- 19:08hitting, left-handed hitter, third baseman from the Milwaukee Braves, hitting 306 for
- 19:13the regular season, and he has 25 home runs and 59 runs batted in. The outfield will shift
- 19:19over radically for him, Colomito deep in right, K-line in right center, the left fielder Minoso
- 19:24has kipped it over the home playing deep, the right side of the infield, Foxman-Skowron
- 19:27is also a little bit deep, almost back to the outfield grass, first pitch is outside,
- 19:32high, ball one. Ball one. Stoke is a ready soldier, the fillies, and Danny Mershaw is
- 19:43a pirate, Sawyer is third, Mershaw is third. Bow ball, and here's a souvenir for somebody,
- 19:51almost made it to the press box. The batter in fact is landed right in front of the official
- 19:55scorers, three of them, Eddie Mondale of the Chicago Sun-Time, Jack Nodding, and left-fielder
- 20:02Minoso Pittsburgh, they first. Ball one strike one, now to Eddie Matthews, one away, nobody
- 20:11on, no score, we're in the first inning. Third ball, front on, change speed on Matthews,
- 20:19ball came to just start to slide away from him a little bit, even though Matthews is
- 20:23riding left-handed, and went with the right-handed pitcher, ball one strike two, early throws
- 20:27among other things, and occasional knuckler, if he gets two strikes on here like one and
- 20:31two which he has now, we're all two Islamic men with it. Third ball outside, two and two,
- 20:40ball two strike two, as we look straight away in the center field we see among other things
- 20:46the Marty Dreyfus monument, rather than Dreyfus. There's a long hit ball, he's right, way back,
- 20:56goodbye, it is a home run. Eddie Matthews in a long shot into the right field base, the
- 21:02low and sand, as an action league goes out in front of the ball, game by a score of one
- 21:07to nothing. Eddie Matthews took six on early-wet fastball and lined it about 15 rows in, into
- 21:17the lower right field seat, about a 390 or 95 foot hope. That brings up Aaron, his teammate,
- 21:25right fielder, the only all-star, elected unanimously. Aaron is hitting 370 during the
- 21:34regular season with 22 home runs and 72 runs batted in, and there is strike one ball right
- 21:39at the knee. Eddie Matthews loves this ball park, he hit a third of his total homers last
- 21:45year in this park. Strike one to Hanks, there's a foul ball. Low seat, back to the plate,
- 22:00the screen extends about halfway up to the roof, and if the foul ball is high enough,
- 22:04it will clear the scene and still go into the seat. Foul hit, strike three, Aaron struck
- 22:12out. That struck right in the triangle, that's two out now, Willie Mays is up, and we're
- 22:18doing a little research here, we find that Eddie Matthews' very first all-star hit in
- 22:22his fourth game, he finally got it, when he did it with the Dandies. Now here's Willie
- 22:27Mays, Mr. Excitement, the fabulous Mr. Mays. When the Giants come into town, Ernie Banks
- 22:33was not very, very lippy at all, so most valuable and less valuable, yells at Mays, here come
- 22:40the Willie Mays Athletic Club. There's one right back and with, Ernie stuck up the ground,
- 22:46the ball stayed in there and Mays lines out to the pitcher, three high on the side. One
- 22:51run, one hit, a home run by Matthews, no ever, nobody left at the end of one full inning.
- 22:55The score is the National League, one the American League, something, two, Papermate,
- 23:04Holliday, a dollar seventy-nine. This new Papermate writes every time, over handprint,
- 23:15fingerprint, squeeze or grind, guarantees, nuts, chips, glitz, glider, sputter, the new
- 23:21Holliday even writes over butter, you can take a piece of butter, now rip it here, and
- 23:26on a piece of paper you can take a tear, with an ordinary pen you can try to write a line,
- 23:31but you'll skip over the tape. Every time, then pick up the Papermate holiday pen, go
- 23:37through the butter test, once again, watch it right through the butter, without a slip,
- 23:43this new Papermate, guaranteed, nuts, chips, new Papermate, Holliday, a dollar seventy-nine.
- 23:52In the batter's box, as we start the second inning for the American League, is Bill Schallrun
- 23:57from Chicago and the New York Yankees, first baseman, a 293 hitter for the record this season,
- 24:02the Moose has 15 homers, 56 runs batted in, Drysdale, Byers away, Lohan away, and that
- 24:07is ball one. Schallrun will be followed by Colabito, Cleveland, and Triandos to Baltimore,
- 24:12and Wendelup, the National League, we're in the second inning. Outfield, as they will
- 24:16be for most of the day, is deep. Third round ball, first rounder of the ball game, up with
- 24:21it is Johnny Temple, the protocopator, and Schallrun is out. Fairly easy chance for Johnny
- 24:26Temple, the very classy second baseman for the Cincinnati Redlegs, that brings up one
- 24:31of the great young potential stars of the game of baseball, Rocky Colabito. Ted Wiggins
- 24:35and Schallrun tagged this fellow for future greatness as a home run hitter, Colabito is
- 24:39hitting 280 right now for the record this season, he has 24 homers, 57 runs batted in,
- 24:44he's 25 years old, and he also has one of the truly great throwing odds in the American
- 24:50League too. Mara Lusseford, six there, four, strike one, right handed hitter, stands pretty
- 24:58well forward in that batter's box, takes that long slugger's grip on the bat, Drysdale
- 25:04fires, six styles high, off to the right hand up on the roof, oh and two, one away, nobody
- 25:10on, the off field, straight away indeed, Rocky Colabito swings a murderous bat, try to get
- 25:22a better, Drysdale slips one past him, a knee high fast curve to the outside corner, that
- 25:27two down brings up Triando to the catcher, three strikeouts now for Drysdale who has
- 25:31retired the first five many space, here comes Gus Triando, 267 hitter for the year, catcher
- 25:39and first baseman for the Baltimore Orioles, he has 20 home runs, 50 runs batted in this
- 25:47year, there they pop up in the end field, first baseman to Feta has no trouble with it and
- 25:53Triando is down to retire the side, no runs, no hits, no errors, nobody left and so, at
- 25:59the middle of the second inning the score is the National League, once the American
- 26:03League nothing.
- 26:04Well Hank Aaron is the only strikeout victim, Wynn has but I'll tell you Hank will still
- 26:13be dangerous anytime he steps up there, the players played Hank a wonderful compliment
- 26:17they made him their unanimous all-star choice this year, never happened before in the history
- 26:21of the game, when it comes to electing favorites Hank himself has one he goes all out for,
- 26:26today Gillette Blue Blade, Hank has good reason to, no other blade, shavings are smooth,
- 26:31so easy that's because no other blades are so keen or so mirror-finished and here's the
- 26:36topper, Gillette Blue Blade are double edged, you get two of the finest finished edges on
- 26:41each blade, instead of the ordinary one you get on single edged blade, this means you
- 26:45get twice as many shaves per blade, save both time and money, so how do you pick for blades?
- 26:52If you don't have plenty, better get an extra package or two of Gillette Blue Blade, in
- 26:56handy dispensers that have safety compartments in the back for youth blades, they're plenty
- 27:00for 98 cents and for 49 cents, remember they're double edged for double shaving comfort, double
- 27:07shaving economy.
- 27:13Moving into the National League half of the second inning now it's for Ernie Banks the
- 27:18National League's most valuable player during the lead off, Ernie's hitting 302, has 23
- 27:22homers and 76 runs batted in, shortstop and what a great ball player he is. First pitch
- 27:30by Early Wedd is curve low and inside for a ball, ball one, Banks will be followed by
- 27:35the first and lone, the left fielder, big swing, back on curve ball by Early, one and one, Banks
- 27:50is one of the quietest of men and one of the most pleasant, he doesn't waggle at that very
- 27:56much in the battered box, he really brings it through, that foul dribbles over toward
- 28:01the third base dugout, where the American Leaguers are, ball one strike two, Ernie like
- 28:10Hank Aaron, he's not a big man, he weighs about 175 to 178 most of the time but he has
- 28:15that tremendous wrist action, that marvelous sense of timing, there's the ground ball,
- 28:22back third is foul, third base umpire, Ed Runge sticks his pointed finger over the foul
- 28:29line and the foul territory indicating very quickly that it was a foul ball, ball one
- 28:33strike two to Banks, outfield to the left and deep, score one oh in favor of the National
- 28:39League, we're in the second inning, outfield as usual to the left and deep, thanks Ben.
- 28:46That's pretty well hit there to drive the left center, the base hitters going all the
- 28:50way to the wall at the 406 foot mark, Ernie takes the turn and second and holds up, it's
- 28:55a base hit, the left center between Minoso and Kalei for Ernie Banks, a double for Banks,
- 29:02nobody out, that brings up the first baseman to Tata, Orlando, the great San Francisco
- 29:11giant first baseman is a 331 hitter, 17 home runs this year, 63 runs batted in, bat on
- 29:20second, nobody out, well would you have a nut here, no but, there's a very high fly
- 29:31to left field, Minoso comes in for it, still running hard and finally ducks away and after
- 29:38each deal the shortstop made the catch, it looked like Minoso's ball all the way and
- 29:43at the last moment he teared off and little Louie went out to make that catch, in short
- 29:50left field, I would guess about 270 or 80 feet from the plate, here's the left fielder
- 30:00Wally Moon, traded from St. Louis to Los Angeles this year, Wally's a 299 here having a very
- 30:07good go, he has 5 home runs, 37 runs batted in, bat on second, one away, service low, ball
- 30:16one, one of the best plays is triple deck, the right field area however is double deck
- 30:26but that's second deck, it's sure a tall second deck, foul off to the left out of play, Wally
- 30:42Moon, one of the left field starting jobs in a very hotly contested collection, Wally,
- 30:57Wade, Moon, Triathlete, number 9 on the back of his, white home for the ball, the national
- 31:09league is the home ball club, the right side of the field is pretty deep, Nelson Fox backs
- 31:13up there pretty deep, a left handed hitter, when takes plenty of time, glances over his
- 31:18shoulder, second turns and throws, the pitch is outside, the count is now ball two strike
- 31:23one on both, Danny Murdoch clapping his hands, yelling encouragement there from his third
- 31:27base coach, Fox, Zinom Mehdi Sawyer, the first base coach, manager of the Philadelphia Phillies,
- 31:32was able to forget his own problem a little bit today and concentrate on the problems
- 31:39of Fred Haney, ball two strike one, strike two, that's curve ball just above the knees
- 31:44to the outside corner, two and two now, for the ball game is one and nothing in favor of
- 31:48the national league, we're in the second inning, banks let off the second inning here with
- 31:51a two base, this is a beta popped up and Moon is at bat, one on and on second, people still
- 31:59coming into the foul part, with those red rubbers, set, they'll wind up the scores,
- 32:06throws, pitch is fouled, that's way out of play, a souvenir for somebody, ball two strike
- 32:14two now to Wally Moon, Wally had a tough job when he came into baseball a few years ago,
- 32:19he had to fill the shoes at St. Louis left by the great Ennis Slaughter and there was
- 32:23a lot of ill feeling when they got the Slaughter away and Moon was taking the place of an
- 32:28idol, Wally not only did it capably, he wound up being named rookie of the year and he's
- 32:32been a standout ball player ever since, he had one dip there in his career but right
- 32:36at this meta he's back on top again, flirting with a 300 batting average and good enough
- 32:41to play in the All-Star game, here's the set now by Wynn, blats the second, turns and throws,
- 32:46the curve is low, over the place but low, Barnick leaves that right hand down at his
- 32:49side, it's ball three, strike two, one thing about it, you never have any doubt about it,
- 32:53strike if Al Barnick is umpiring, he throws that right hand out there and he follows all
- 32:57over the ballpark, there's nothing subtle about him and for that reason he is considered
- 33:02quite a capable umpire, for that reason among many, many others, ball three, strike two,
- 33:10out the old still, pretty deep, just about straight away, that curve is outside and Wally
- 33:15Moon has worked Wynn for a long, that's what's meant on first and second, one away and brings
- 33:20up catcher, Del Randall, Randall hitting 277, has a dozen home runs this year and 39 runs
- 33:27about it and he's a real leader, a real field leader, he's one of those guys who made the
- 33:32jump from play ball to the major leagues and has struck ever since, he came up with the
- 33:36Boston Braves, where the Boston Braves instead of Milwaukee Braves and Del has got a real
- 33:41leader's side, if you want, there's a foul, out of play, umpire next, strike one. Randall
- 33:56in his lifetime in the major, he's down his ninth year, the 250 hitter, this doesn't sound
- 34:01too impressive but if you'll double check his history you'll find that he's got that
- 34:05one hit for every four official trips to play most of the time when it counted quite a bit,
- 34:10so get that hit one, it'll break your back, there's a curve ball inside, he swings and
- 34:13misses, 0 and 2, great handler of pitchers, great hustler and strictly a leader's side,
- 34:210 and 2. Warming up in the full fence of the American Leaguers is Buc Bailey on the Kansas
- 34:32City Athletics, left hander, muckle baller, 0 and 2, foul, back up into the screen on
- 34:41the curve ball, still a no ball, strike two count on Randall, banks on second, Wally
- 34:46pulled on first, 1 to nothing ball game in favor of the National League, we are in the
- 34:50second inning at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh, a very, very famous location which as Bob
- 34:54Prince told you is now enjoying its 50th anniversary, a very impressive setting like Wrigley Field
- 35:03has a lot of eyes on the outfield wall.
- 35:08Strike three call, a neat curve, Randall looked it over and was crossed up, 2 down, 2 on and
- 35:16the pitcher Drysdale comes to bat, now Drysdale is one of the better hitting pitchers, he'll
- 35:20hit that home run for you every once in a while although, thanks for being a young fellow
- 35:26who got himself a record number of homers for a pitcher last year as pre-hits year, he
- 35:32was used as a pitch hitter for the first time the other night while not hitting into a double
- 35:35play much to his embarrassment.
- 35:38John Drysdale got a fine hand as he walked out towards the batter's box, banks on second,
- 35:48Wally Moad on first, 2 out, Drysdale was high school quarterback, should have made a good
- 35:57one, it would have been 5, Bob Hall, strike one, matter of fact Don was given quite a
- 36:05few opportunities to play college football and at one time did have his eye on a professional
- 36:10football career and as a quarterback, a 6 foot 5 quarterback under today's very tenuous
- 36:16professional football requirements he might have fit the bill very well.
- 36:22Young man from Van Nuys, California, this is out in the valley now, the San Fernando Valley,
- 36:26there's a swing, 0 and 2, when the gauge pitchers, take a look at how many he struck out as opposed
- 36:35to how many he has walked, if you want to do that with Drysdale you've got a pretty impressive
- 36:38figure because this fellow has struck out 133 and walked only 44 men this year, earned
- 36:43an average of 3.23. 0 and 2, we're going to miss, Wendgottum with that very very big curveball
- 36:57of his and that retires the side, 3 strikeouts early now in two in Hingley, no runs, one hit
- 37:02a lead off double by Banks, no errors, 2 men left, Wally Moad walks and so at the end of
- 37:09the second inning the score is the National League won, the American League nothing.
- 37:16Well leading off in the third inning will be Johnny Temple, one of those National Leaguers
- 37:22get a chance to bat and they're half of this inning, right up the American League in this
- 37:27road. You know you can put Johnny down at just another big league star who's all up
- 37:30to that new Gillette adjustable razor, for the wonder all it takes is a simple turn of
- 37:35the micrometer dial and you shut the Gillette adjustable to any one of nine different degrees
- 37:41of edge exposure and edge angle. There's a setting that suits your requirements exactly
- 37:46for fast clean shave, by far the most comfortable ever, that's guaranteed, be sure you see the
- 37:52Gillette, 195 adjustable, first chance you get. Let's pause 10 seconds, or rather 30
- 38:02seconds for safe identification. WGY with the USM connect today. When you're thirsty as
- 38:08a hard working southpaw in the mountain, pop open a bottle of Ferro Togavici, you see this
- 38:13perfect mixer is a great first fixer too. Ferro Togavici's sparkling extra dry tang
- 38:18cleanses your thirst as no smooth beverage can and it replaces vital minerals your body
- 38:23loses through perspiration. If you want real Vicky, get the yellow label, yellow label,
- 38:27get the yellow label, get the yellow label. Arvin Kelleber leading off in the third inning
- 38:32just taking a whack at the first pick and has popped up to the shortstop and that's
- 38:40one away and brings up the shortstop Aparicio. One on down and Aparicio the very, very excellent
- 38:52shortstop of the White Sox taking a ball on a fastball outside. Check that Willie May
- 39:00has came in as Banks the purple went out and made the catch on Kelleber's fly ball out
- 39:05back to second base. Willie will do that. There's a fly ball out the right center field,
- 39:09Aaron moving over, Hank is there, he takes it, Aparicio is out. Two down and we're probably
- 39:16going to get a pitch hitter. Verzat is warming up by the way for the National League. No sir,
- 39:24early winners in the bathroom stuff. We saw it, we saw it, Suri along the bat rack there
- 39:30in the American League. Although Early is a pretty good hitter himself. When he was with
- 39:34the Washington Senators one time he had a separate club in his contract with Clark Griffiths
- 39:38calling for X dollars as a pitch hitter. Early is 111 and lost five. Earned on average is
- 39:463.83 at this point in the regular season. Won 260 major league games, 20th in the list
- 39:51of all time winners. Drysdale throws up that one, that one, strike one. The score is one
- 39:57to nothing in favor of the National League. We're in the third inning now with the American
- 40:01League, the visiting ball club at bat. Two out, nobody on. Strike, oh it's two. Drysdale
- 40:15is reminiscent of Yule Blackwell, the famous whip that's tied on delivery of his. It's
- 40:20almost a clock fire pitch that's blowing inside. Ball one, strike two. Frankie Frisch once said
- 40:27about Blackwell and I think he's saying today about this fellow that there should be a law
- 40:30against his being allowed to pitch that way to right handed hitters. One and two. Way
- 40:37outside, two and two. He'll throw that jammer at these left handers, he'll throw it right
- 40:46at their fists. At the 25 it is, it's thrown with almost a screwball motion. But it isn't
- 40:53a screwball. Strike, win, goes on swinging, throws the bat down angrily. No runs, no hits,
- 41:01no errors, nobody left and Drysdale has retired nine in a row and has struck out four of them.
- 41:10Three balls hit out of the infield on him. A marvelous performance. And so at the middle
- 41:15of the third inning the score is the National League won, the American League nothing. Well
- 41:21as we said it's a beautiful day. And even if it weren't, well we can't do much about the
- 41:25weather but we do know that there are going to be plenty more of proclimate days ahead,
- 41:28you know the kind I mean. Days when you especially appreciate the cleanly fresh feeling of a
- 41:32shaving cream shave. And there's no better way to prepare for that shaving cream shave
- 41:36than with just foamy, the instant lather shaving cream. Fast and easy and how. Just the touch
- 41:42of the foamy nozzle and instantly you have billowy, snow white lather. Lather so rich,
- 41:47so full bodied that just a little goes a long way. That's economy at another flush. Foamy
- 41:52contains K34, the exclusive antiseptic that destroys harmful bacteria on your face. Gillette
- 42:00foamy is available in two sizes, regular at 79 cents or the new Giant foamy, almost twice
- 42:05as much for only 98 cents. And you can get foamy with cool refreshing menthol added if
- 42:10you like. Take your pick from the Gillette foamy display at a store near you. Johnny
- 42:15Temple leading off in the third. And there's a strike call knee high, up that outside corner,
- 42:22strike one to Temple, who's out of the ball game with a fly ball to K-line center field.
- 42:29Well, Sangl's got Ryan Dernan warming up now, it has Haley. One and one. Ball one strike
- 42:37one to Temple. He'll be followed by Matthew, whose home run represents the only scoring
- 42:42in the ball game so far. Then the right fielder, Aaron, wins. Let's go. There's a high fly
- 42:47ball into short right center. Colomito is there and he takes it. Temple is out. One
- 42:54away, that'll bring up third baseman Eddie Mattson. Got a home run, a line drive homer
- 43:00into the right field grandstand. The lower back, last time in fact, getting a nice hand
- 43:07as he steps in. Eddie Mattson with 25 regular season home runs. The batter's box again,
- 43:13wins so there's a very high fly ball in foul territory. Garland pulls over to the low boxes,
- 43:19he takes it and Matthew is out. Two down, Hanger and a tank, struck out the last time
- 43:28in fact, getting a fabulous 370. After a long time, after the season opened this year, it
- 43:38became eminent that Hank had his eyes on a 400 season he may still have. Of course, the
- 43:45outstanding pitching feat in the history of this series is still Carl Hummel's 1934 performance
- 43:49when he struck out five in a row, six all told. The total of six strikes out to the
- 43:53record which is subsequently been tied by Johnny Vandermeer in 1943 in a night game
- 43:57at Philadelphia and Larry Jansen at Comiskey Park in 1950. We saw both games.
- 44:02Curveball, going on. Line drive right into the shortstop club.
- 44:06Aparicio just reached up for that one and little Lily took it, tire the side.
- 44:11No runs, no hits, no errors, nobody left.
- 44:16And at the end of the third inning the score is the National League won the American League nothing.
- 44:22Do you really want a deep cave?
- 44:32Then change the better, change the better with the brave and the braver by the double-chain.
- 44:41The ball game now is moving into the fourth inning and Luberdet is the new pitcher.
- 44:48Luberdet will pitch starting the fourth inning. Both Wynn and Drysdale finish their chores.
- 44:52Early Wynn who was last year's winning pitcher leaves with a 1-0 deficit.
- 44:59He made one mistake, he pitched that home run ball to Eddie Matthews. Drysdale made not.
- 45:03Now here's Luberdet, one of the great, great pitchers of his day.
- 45:07A fellow who has had more great adventures and more great accomplishments in his years than the National League
- 45:13then we have the time to tell you about right now.
- 45:18Lu in the regular season has won 11-11 at Los Angeles.
- 45:23He comes into the small game for the regular season average of earned an average of 4.01.
- 45:28He has struck out 49 and won only 22.
- 45:33Melvin Lewis-Bernett Jr. from Mackrow, West Virginia, 6'2", weighs 180.
- 45:38He scored down there at 19-26 on November 22nd. In a couple of World Series,
- 45:43who can forget that 57th performance 21-3 and lost nuts.
- 45:51Top of the batting order up now for the American League,
- 45:54Mini Minoso of the Cleveland Indians, left fielder, a 297 winner with 13 homers and 51 runs batted in.
- 46:02In the regular season, he's going to lead off. He'll be followed by Vox and Kalei.
- 46:06Mini is one of the most colorful of all players, certainly one of the great hunters of his day.
- 46:10He'll give 120% of himself at all times.
- 46:141-0 to score now at the top of the fourth National League out in front and Bernett gets that.
- 46:20See how he strikes like one.
- 46:24Bernett is a real fidgety fill out there.
- 46:29He really gestures and goes through lots and lots of adding connections
- 46:34and talks to himself too, by the way.
- 46:36He'll whistle once in a while. You can hear him automatically whistling out there.
- 46:41And like he told us one time, he says, yes, you bet your life I talk to myself out there.
- 46:46And if things aren't going right, I answer myself too.
- 46:491-1 is the count on Minoso.
- 46:53There's the ground ball to the right of the mound.
- 46:55Temple in for it.
- 46:56Temple picks himself up and throws.
- 46:58In time, you get Minoso who is really picking him up and laying him down that first baseline.
- 47:03Temple with great reflex action recovered from stumbling after going for that ball.
- 47:10One away, box up.
- 47:11Little Nell strung out the last time at bat.
- 47:22One out, nobody on. Four sitting.
- 47:26Yopfield channels up a little on Foxy and they're playing him just about straight away.
- 47:30He'll hit any field.
- 47:33That fast curve was a little outside off the corner, maybe an inch.
- 47:36Ball one. Our vantage point is perfect.
- 47:38We're directly behind home plate. We can see those pins coming in beautifully.
- 47:41We're just high enough so that we have just a beautiful perspective on everything that goes on down there.
- 47:46There's a foul ball down the right field side and it gives John Rice, the American League, a little work.
- 47:52Ball one, strike one.
- 47:56Wally Moo, Willie Mays, and Hank Aaron at left, center, and right for the National Leaguers on the field right now.
- 48:01Eddie Matthews, the third, Banks is short.
- 48:03Johnny Temple is second. Orlando Cepeda is first.
- 48:06The batter is Bethette and Crandall.
- 48:09One and one.
- 48:10There's a high foul ball and Eddie Matthews has a play on this one.
- 48:13Back to the coaches box and third. He takes it.
- 48:15Nelson Fox is out.
- 48:18Two down, K lineup.
- 48:24Burnett will throw an occasional screwball, and you can tell when he's throwing that screwball because he runs right off the mound with that delivery.
- 48:32This is Al K-line, struck out.
- 48:35Kill the time up.
- 48:40Has a pretty good battle going with his teammate on Detroit, Harvey Keene, for the American League batting leadership.
- 48:46Right at this moment, Al is second with a 3.44 batting average.
- 48:51Strike one on the count on him. Two out on the fourth inning.
- 48:55Burnett touches the cap, sticks the ball in the glove, tears down, gets his side, goes into his motion, throws a sidearm, hits the slow.
- 49:02One and one.
- 49:03Crandall fires the ball back to him, and he has so many, many times.
- 49:07And Lou steps off that mound.
- 49:09Just to give you an idea, we'll try to cover this guy's judges for you.
- 49:12He just wraps his hand across his letter, pick up the ruts, back ground, and he's covered his tongue in his cap.
- 49:16Rocks back twice, winds up, here we go, and that's low. That's ball.
- 49:21Gets the ball, turns his back to the plate, touches his left hand across his left hip.
- 49:25Now he wraps up the ball as he steps off the mound, turns around, looks down at the batter and the catcher.
- 49:29Takes the glove under his arm, takes the glove under his arm, takes it back on, takes the glove and it's tucked in his cap.
- 49:34Makes a motion toward his chin, tucked in his cap again after dropping the rousin back, hits his shoulder,
- 49:39throws the wind up out of his direction, and there's the pitch of Bob Wall on a play. Two and two.
- 49:47Ball two, strike two.
- 49:50And of course as Lou claims, the best pitch he has is one he doesn't use, the one he's been accused of is better.
- 49:59Tucks the rousin back, touches the cap.
- 50:02Little battle of nerves going on there between the batter and the pitcher.
- 50:05Here's the wind up. Throws the shot a little bit off the corner.
- 50:10Side of the knees, ball three, strike two. Two out on the fourth.
- 50:13The National League is leading by a score of one to nothing.
- 50:15The American League is back, K-line in the batter's box.
- 50:24And Lou Bordet goes through every motion a pitcher can go through plus a couple which haven't been put in the book yet.
- 50:31Let's go again. Let's reply. There's a foul ball high back of the plate.
- 50:36It goes over the top of the screen and the below seats back of the screen. It's ball three, strike two.
- 50:42Just over the wall we're looking at Cheneley Park.
- 50:45And we had heard about the monument to Honest Wagoners, but we thought the monument was inside the ballpark.
- 50:49It's just outside the left field wall over there in Cheneley Park in front of the Carnegie Museum.
- 50:56Three and two. Off the old just a shade left. There's a pretty well hit ball.
- 51:02That's very deep. Way back, back, back, back. It is over the wall. A home run for Al K-line.
- 51:08The ball game is all tied up. Al K-line runs one over the left field wall.
- 51:14Lou never did give up on it. Went all the way back to the wall.
- 51:17But finally with his shoulders raising the wall all he could do was stand there and helplessly watch the ball go over the wall
- 51:24for a game tying home run by Al K-line.
- 51:28Well, that makes the new ball game out of us. The score is one to one.
- 51:32We're in the fourth inning and Scholarin is up. Bill Scholarin.
- 51:36Routed out, temple dissipated the last time and pass.
- 51:39Bill by the way wears a corset at all times on and off that diamond.
- 51:44Result of a back injury. Helping around the house. There's the foul ball.
- 51:51Strike one.
- 51:57That's Mr. Al K-line first all-star home run.
- 52:04Strike one to Scholarin. Two out, nobody on.
- 52:12Foul ball. Oh and to Scholarin first game to our attention.
- 52:17Chicago has a prep school, Weber High football player and we knew him at Purdue as a left footed putter.
- 52:27Already got a chance to join the Yankees and get one of those real good-sized bonuses.
- 52:33$25,000 bonus.
- 52:39Oh and to. There's the foul ball. In the hole between Scholarin and Scholarin.
- 52:45Two out, Colavito is up.
- 52:50Well the national league fishing had retired 11 in a row before that first hit and the first hit was a home run.
- 53:01Bob Colavito is up.
- 53:04Struck out the last time at bat. Bat on base, two out.
- 53:08Right-handed hitter, as we said before, stands well forward in that box. He likes to get on that curve ball before he gets a chance to break on him.
- 53:16And there's the swing and there's a base hit at the center field.
- 53:20About three feet to the left of second base, William A. is munching the ball in.
- 53:24Scholarin stopping at second. Now with that on first and second, Triangles is done. Two down.
- 53:33And in the bullpen for the national leaguer, Dad Roy Faith. And he says his offense in the action in this game is beginning to warm up.
- 53:42In the meantime, Triangles is out to have a little talk with Berndette. They've been in this hole before.
- 53:47Triangles, the catcher for the American leaguers, the Big Burley fellow. Bob Shirley's partner, they have an insurance business together in Baltimore.
- 53:55He's in the batter's box, takes that wide stand. Gus has 20 regular season home runs.
- 54:01Now he's in bat with a chance to put the American league in the lead. It's one to one here, three-fourth inning.
- 54:06Two men out and two out. Berndette is in a jam.
- 54:12The outfield is plenty to eat for Gus. Center fielder Mays, dated a little toward left. There's a strike.
- 54:17There's a strike one. That's curve ball. Just below the belt about two inches inside the strike zone, inside corner.
- 54:24Strike one.
- 54:30Gowland and Colomito with modest leadoff. Gowland takes about a five-step of their second.
- 54:35Now he's second at the seven. As Berndette gets ready here at the pitch, there's a well-hit ball.
- 54:38He's to right center. Aaron and Mays running hard. It is dropped by Hank Aaron.
- 54:43Boy, did Henry make himself a running catch that time. That ball was hit over 400 feet.
- 54:50Deep to right center field. And Hank Aaron pulled it in with a long and who knows, maybe a game-saving run.
- 54:57One run, three hits, no errors. Two men left on.
- 55:01And close to the middle of the fourth inning, the score is American League One, National League One.
- 55:12Two, paper Mays, holiday, $1.79.
- 55:23This new paper Mays writes every dime, over handprint, fingerprint, grease or grime.
- 55:29Guaranteed not skipped, flip-slide or sputter. The new holiday even writes over butter.
- 55:34You can take a stick of butter, now listen here. And on a piece of paper you can make a smear.
- 55:40With an ordinary pen you can try to write a line, but you'll skip over the butter every dime.
- 55:46Then pick up the paper Mays holiday pen and go through the butter, sir.
- 55:50Once again, watch it right through the butter without a slip.
- 55:54This new paper Mays guarantees not to skip.
- 55:57Two, paper Mays, holiday, $1.79.
- 56:08We have a new picture now for the American League, Ryan Durin.
- 56:12Here's the flamethrower for the New York Yankees.
- 56:15It's done it with six flasks, and he fires that ball. Man does he fire that ball.
- 56:24You'll face Willie Mays, thanks to Fata.
- 56:32Durin in the regular season has won one and lost two.
- 56:35He's strictly a relief pitcher, but get this earned run average, 0.90.
- 56:40Struck out 47, walked 22. Willie Mays, lined out to pitch an early win the last time at Fata's under-batter clock.
- 56:48Here's a wide up, here's a throw, and there's a wolf ball, hung on, strike one.
- 56:52The score is tied 1-1.
- 56:54This is the first chance that many people here in Pittsburgh have had to see the American League stars who are performing today.
- 57:00They've heard about this Durin fastball. You can probably hear the gas that went through the crowd.
- 57:09On that first pitch, strike one.
- 57:14Strike two, another fastball. Knee high to the outside corner.
- 57:18Willie Mays raises the right eyebrow as he looks out there at Durin.
- 57:230-2. 0-2.
- 57:321-1 ball game. Mays has met with the National Leaguers in the home half of the fourth inning. Outfield, plenty deep.
- 57:42Here we go. Fastball, a little outside. Three fastballs to Willie. Ball one, strike two.
- 57:52One and two.
- 58:00Center fielder Kalei about three steps to the left. Everybody else is straight away.
- 58:05Willie went for a low outside fastball and struck out.
- 58:13Well, everybody seems to have brought that strikeout pitch to the ballpark with them today.
- 58:17Early Wicks struck out from three. One, two, three, and here's three innings.
- 58:22Durin has struck out the first man to face them.
- 58:25And Drysdale struck out four in three innings.
- 58:29Three banks who let off the second inning with a double end dive on second base.
- 58:33We're going to that now. One out.
- 58:41Fastball is low. Over the place is low.
- 58:44Question, why did Fred Haney strike to that bank's fifth and batting order and Mays fourth?
- 58:51The answer was that Haney's logic might be a little bit on the pessimistic side.
- 58:56Well, in case they get a sound order in the first inning, Mays will be a bad person.
- 59:00If he gets on base, he can run better than banks and I'll have a good base runner with banks up.
- 59:05Ball two, two and O.
- 59:12As it turned out, Mays batted in the first inning because Matthew built it a home run.
- 59:17So that meant the fourth man in the batting order came up and Ernie did lead off the second inning.
- 59:22And as I said, the 40 doubled. Ball two, foul ball.
- 59:27Ball two, strike one. That one's high. Back of the plate. Over the screen for the upper deck.
- 59:33Ball two, strike one. So far it's been a pitcher's day except for the two lightning-like thrusts offensively.
- 59:41One on each team. The home run ball, one by Kalei, one by Matthew. That's the story at this point.
- 59:51That had a foul. High. Back of the plate. This side's it.
- 59:55And some customer leads so far over the upper deck trying to get that one that I for a moment wondered if he might not tumble out.
- 1:00:01Ball two, strike two.
- 1:00:07Two and two. American League has three hits and National League two in this ballgame, which is in the fourth inning.
- 1:00:18Two and two.
- 1:00:22Duran, for the side of the piano, winds up.
- 1:00:27Another bat handle foul.
- 1:00:29In the side pitch. Ball two, strike two.
- 1:00:37Well, the relief pitching, per se, on both sides is really very promising. What with Duran,.90 and Roy Facer's.83.
- 1:00:53Two and two.
- 1:00:56A little close. Nearly nicked him. Ball three, strike two.
- 1:01:01You have to be a brave man to take a total against this Duran.
- 1:01:09Ball three, strike two. As a matter of fact, I remember Franklin one time telling me and another reporter that as far as he was concerned, hitting is 60 percent courage in baseball.
- 1:01:19That's another baseball man sent there to verify that percentage.
- 1:01:22There's a deep foul on the right field side, curving back into low seats. Ball three, strike two.
- 1:01:28You have to crowd that place. You have to guard it. Otherwise, if that pitcher moves you too far back into the batter's box there, he'll tip one across that outside corner and it'll be a strike that'll still be beyond the end of your bat.
- 1:01:41Ball three, strike two.
- 1:01:48Ernie Banks the batter. Marvelous reflexes. Great miss. Eye over his head. And that's ball four. And had there been somebody on base that would have been a wild pitch. Banks draws a walk.
- 1:02:06That is the second walk given to an American leaguer. Wally Moon got one on the second inning. And that brings up the first baseman to say that.
- 1:02:17Copped up to short step Aparicio and short left the last time at bat.
- 1:02:30Second walk given to a national leaguer by an American leaguer, as I was saying.
- 1:02:37Down ball to left second. Over with it. Aparicio steps on second and throws the first in time. And that kills off the side.
- 1:02:46Aparicio moving to his left. Completing the double play, forcing Banks and doubling up the play to no runs, no hits, no errors, nobody left to see. End of the fourth inning, the score is still one to one.
- 1:02:58The shot, he's got it, he's got it. How are you big for a blade? How are you big for a blade? You're better, Jack. Please make sure you have enough, cause a worn out blade makes him a tiny cut. How are you big for a blade? You're better, look. You're that blue blade we need.
- 1:03:22Let's pause 30 seconds for station identification. WGY WGFM's connect today.
- 1:03:30There's never been another ball player like Dave Rooks and confusing advertising to the contrary. There's only one genuine Saratoga Vichy.
- 1:03:38Demand the brand with the famous yellow label. Your only assurance is getting that distinctive extra dry, bubbly tang. Saratoga Vichy helps you feel better in the morning too. If you want real Vichy, you've got the yellow label.
- 1:03:52The ball game is moving into the top of the fifth inning and leading off is going to be Killibrew, third baseman, 271 hitter who leads the American League in homers and runs batted in. A young fellow who's emerged as a new star on the baseball horizon. He has 28 homers and 70 runs batted in. Young fellow built up strong shoulders working a film ground for a couple of years while he was in high school.
- 1:04:12And who has the unusual distinction of being scouted by a United States Senator who counted the Senators on him and sure enough the Senator from Idaho was right. Mr. Killibrew turned out to be a very good idea.
- 1:04:24Burdette goes one and that is ball one as the fifth inning gets underway. American League advanced. The ball game tied one to one. Killibrew will be followed by Amparicio and then Duran. Top field of the left team. There's a ground ball passed to the left of second bank.
- 1:04:44The right side bank goes over bank that way. And fires the first at time. Boy that looks like it had a good chance to get past Ernie. But he just gave it that extra oomph toward the end of that stretch and got his match. One out, Amparicio up.
- 1:05:04Rui Amparicio. Getting 291, five homers this year which is quite a few for Little Louie. 30 more runs batted in, a little fed up down in Venezuela. Donald Fadden is really in love with this guy.
- 1:05:16To the bottom on the right the last time at bat. Fitzgerald Burdette. Ball one. Just a hand of the notes from Bob that Senator Welker from Idaho who's got Killibrew for once and also got Law for Pittsburgh running long.
- 1:05:39Ball one. Knee high curve ball strike. One and one. Game tied one to one. Nationally with a homer by Matthews for the first. The American League match to put K-Lines in the fourth.
- 1:05:53The American has out hit the national in the first four running three to two. One away. Louie Amparicio, eight men in the batting order.
- 1:06:02One on curve. One on. There's a fly ball back to left field. That back's while he's moving up. He's near the wall and he pulls it in about 10 feet away from that 406 foot mark in left field.
- 1:06:12Amparicio giving it a pretty good ride. Two down. Duran the pitcher is up.
- 1:06:22Like I say you don't take a toehold against a Duran too often. And he's been accused of throwing that duster as other pitchers have too.
- 1:06:39But he claims the fourth. He doesn't throw the duster purposely. He may throw a brush back pitch but as it was explained to me one time it's not really a duster unless your head goes one way and the back goes the other.
- 1:06:53Strike one now. Duran swings on strike two. Burdett flipping a curve pass. Demo and two. They're playing in the swing late.
- 1:07:04Willie May is the center fielder. He's shaded over towards right center. Oh and two. Two out. Nobody on. Fifth inning.
- 1:07:14Tried to butt. Missed it. Duran struck out and that retires the side. No runs. No hits. No errors. Nobody left.
- 1:07:20Well that's the halfway point in the ball game. And the score at the middle of the fifth inning is American League one, the National League one.
- 1:07:30Well let's see Harvey Keene stretching that dugout. He'll probably get in the ball game too. You know in Harvey's seven years in the majors he's been chosen on six all-star teams.
- 1:07:37Both as a shortstop and an outfielder. Harv's the American League's leading hitter right now. A tough man to fool with the plate. He knows what he likes in razors too. His choice? The new Gillette Adjustable of court.
- 1:07:48Like a lot of men Harvey Keene found his comfort took on a brand new meaning once he tried the Gillette 195 Adjustable Razor. Why? Because here's a razor you adjust to match your own combination of skin and beard.
- 1:07:59That's right. There's an adjusting collar on the handle that you can set to any one of nine different degrees of edge exposure or angle. Turn to the left gives you left blade edge. Turn the dial to the right and more blade edge is exposed.
- 1:08:11Men with white beard, heavy beard, tender skin, any combination in the book are positively guaranteed clean long lasting shave or your money back.
- 1:08:20The Gillette Adjustable has made such a big hit with you fans that some stores are completely sold out. If you can't find one right off ask your dealer to reserve one for you. You'll be getting a new shipment just as soon as production permits.
- 1:08:32The Gillette Adjustable costs only a dollar ninety five complete with blue blade sensor and travel case.
- 1:08:43Well right at this minute I'm going to turn a very exciting ball game of one to one. Over for the last half of this broadcast to my very good friends the very popular announcer for KDK and Pittsburgh here.
- 1:08:54Follows these pirates, man and boy now for more years than I expect he wants to admit. Bob Prince. Bob come on in here will you.
- 1:09:01Thank you very much Jack and a wonderful call on the great first half of this ball game and it looks as though now it's going to be the long ball or the explosiveness of it that will get us determined one way or the other.
- 1:09:11Wally Moon who is not at all adverse to the long ball and who has found the left field wall at the Coliseum of very friendly saying it's only two hundred and fifty feet away now goes to left field a lot for some of his homers and extra base hit will be the man.
- 1:09:25And we have a change in the umpiring Joe Paparello of the American League will come to the plate and Al Barlich will now move to the other side on the diamond and we will move around with Barlich, Paparello, Donatelli and Ed Runge with Crawford and Rice on the line.
- 1:09:39And we're waiting the occasion of the delay is that they're waiting for Barlich to get rid of the equipment as the National League always uses the inside chest protector with the exception of Jack O'Connor.
- 1:09:50The American League goes for the inflated chest protector and they're ready to go much quicker so they're giving Al Barlich the opportunity to take it off.
- 1:09:58Wally Moon is one of the five fellows that ever hit a home run in the history of this game over the right field pavilion at Falks Field.
- 1:10:04It's three hundred feet down the immediate line. All dots do better than four hundred feet. It's a triple deck to fair.
- 1:10:10While it's double deck in right field it's exactly the same height as though it had to be. They just don't have the triple deck all the way up there.
- 1:10:16But it's a good ninety to a hundred feet. Here's Al Barlich.
- 1:10:21So as he comes out we'll be ready to go in a moment. You know in just about a month from now August 3rd will be exact.
- 1:10:27The second Major League All-Star game of the year will be played in the Los Angeles Coliseum and I'm sure you fans out on the West Coast are anxious to see those great stars in action.
- 1:10:35Official ticket order forms are now available from the Dodgers at the Los Angeles Coliseum or any agency handling Dodger tickets.
- 1:10:42This is Wally Moon. He walked his first time up Ryan Duren, a strong right hander, a swing and a miss strike one.
- 1:10:49Moon has been told you're one of the five men to ever hit a home run over the right field pavilion, the other being five-skinner of Pittsburgh and Ted Beard.
- 1:10:55Mickey Mantle, the Yankees, and an exhibition and Babe Ruth. The Babe was the first to do it and there's quite a story about that.
- 1:11:02Wally Moon, nothing in one. Ryan Duren, caught that right arm fire, the fastball down inside, one and one.
- 1:11:08The Babe hit his last three home runs of his illustrious home run career, number 712 on the lower deck for Boston, 713 upper deck, and 714 the last he was to ever strike.
- 1:11:19Went out of here over everything. One ball, one strike to Wally Moon. Duren comes down with a fast one.
- 1:11:26Moon a check swing fouls off to the left side down to the bleachers, so it's a count of one and two.
- 1:11:31The on deck batter is catcher Dale Crandall. Doors tied at one-one.
- 1:11:35The National League bang in with a pair of hits, a home run by Matthews and a double by Fank.
- 1:11:40And the American League in with three hits, a home run by Kailon, and singles then followed by Skowin and Calabito. No further damage.
- 1:11:48In the National League fifth inning, one ball to strike pitch from Ryan Duren.
- 1:11:52Left hand batting Wally Moon watches one up around the bill of the cap, two-two.
- 1:11:57In spring training a couple of years ago, Ryan Duren was pitching against the Milwaukee Braves, and Henry Aaron saw the first four warm-up pitches, three of which climbed the screen a hundred feet behind home plate.
- 1:12:07Aaron said, if it's all right with you, we'll not bat today. Walked right out of there. Two balls, two strikes to Moon.
- 1:12:14Duren, a double pump this time, hangs it outside, three and two.
- 1:12:19That ball is stayed away from left hand batting Moon.
- 1:12:23Left fielder Minimanoso is playing a very shallow left fielder, Wally, and they give him a little bit of a gap in right center.
- 1:12:29As Kailon is off to his right, they don't figure that Moon will be able to pull any of Ryan Duren.
- 1:12:35But three balls and two strikes, the big pitch on the way. He's stuck him out, and it was a swinging strikeout. That's the second strikeout for Duren, the fifth against the National Leaguers this afternoon.
- 1:12:48Giles Dale has racked up the best strikeout record for the Nationals when he's navigated three perfect innings, striking out four along the roof.
- 1:13:01Katja Del Crandall, strikeout sixth, amendment second.
- 1:13:13Here's the pitch.
- 1:13:15Delivery, gun down, third base side, and Killibrew comes up on his first offering, throws on to first baseman Moose Cowell and Crandall down two away.
- 1:13:23The batter two up there is pitcher Lou Bordet.
- 1:13:30Nobody has yet made a move from the National League dugout, which here in Fort Field is this one.
- 1:13:35Here comes Lou. He's the only guy that runs right out of that dugout. He comes up the point.
- 1:13:39Jack was telling you earlier about what a fine home run hitting pitcher Giles Dale was, this boy is too. Lou Bordet.
- 1:13:46His father was the horseshoe pitching champion down in West Virginia, and he taught Lou how to do it. Lou controlled 15, 16 ringers in a row.
- 1:13:54He's quite an all-around athlete and a great comedian.
- 1:14:01Straight out at the outfield to him, the gap in left mid air, swing on the Durance curve, and he doesn't get it, oh, and one.
- 1:14:07Short side at one, one, and the fifth inning, two down, none on.
- 1:14:11National League is the home team and, of course, wearing their white uniforms of their respective teams.
- 1:14:17Big number 33, made famous in the World Series a couple years ago, with three tremendous victories over the 80s.
- 1:14:24Here's the on one, two, Lou.
- 1:14:26Durance gets another fast one on the corner that Bordet can't even handle.
- 1:14:31No strike, no ball, two strikes.
- 1:14:37Early win, started for the American Lakers, went for a hill out to one run with Matthew Holman.
- 1:14:43Two hits, second hit by Banks, the devil, Herman.
- 1:14:47And now it's Durance on. Here's the oh and two-two Bordet.
- 1:14:51Check, swing, foul off to the right, just guarding the plate with two strikes on him.
- 1:14:56Just flick it off to the right side.
- 1:15:00We've told you from time to time, the most ideal weather you could ever have for the All-Star Game, and the luck of the All-Star Game holds true.
- 1:15:07It's been delayed once as a result of rain, and it was an official game in Philadelphia at the end of five.
- 1:15:14Other than that, they usually have the fine success here at the Missouli Classic.
- 1:15:18Here's the oh-two pitch, another boiling, quick swing off to the right, fouling it out of play.
- 1:15:23Oh and two, Bordet just taking it back, putting it down into the strike zone, as Durance is in that strike zone and has the two strikes.
- 1:15:30Durance is just flunking at it a little bit, hoping he can get a little better shot with some good wood.
- 1:15:38Two down, none on in the national fifth inning, one-one ball game.
- 1:15:43Oh-two pitch, got it down, foul it third.
- 1:15:48Al Bartek is now the third-base umpire, as Paparilla has come to the plate.
- 1:15:56Adonatelli of the National League and Ed Runge of the American League remain on the face pads with him,
- 1:16:00and on the foul line is John Rice of the American League on the right field line, and Shag Crawford of the National League on the left field line.
- 1:16:09No balls, he tracks to Bordet.
- 1:16:11During work, Sandy got him on a strikeout as he jammed him right on the fifth.
- 1:16:15So it turned out three-up, three-down, and at the end of five, the score is American League one to the National League one.
- 1:16:24As a public service, Gillette brings you the following message.
- 1:16:27Traffic accidents continue to take a heavy toll of lives and property on our roads, and the problem of making the highways safe is everybody.
- 1:16:35Records show that where strong, sound traffic laws exist and are strictly enforced, traffic deaths have gone down.
- 1:16:42So get behind your public officials and law enforcement authorities and support them in tightening up the traffic laws in your community.
- 1:16:48Urge your families to observe all safety rules as drivers and as pedestrians.
- 1:16:52And remember, where traffic laws are abated and enforced, deaths go down.
- 1:16:57The National Baseball Writers' Chapter of America, Mr. Lester Biedemann of the Pittsburgh Threats,
- 1:17:02and the official scorer, along with Jack Herner of the Post Gazette and Edmund Zell of Chicago, have announced the paid attendance, 34,763.
- 1:17:12This is not the largest attendance available to Ford Field, but under the laws of the Commissioner of Baseball,
- 1:17:19you do not sell the standing room only or get people on the field.
- 1:17:26The only way they ever got up over 40,000 here at Ford Field in Pittsburgh was by allowing them one time to stand around the field and put in the ground a little double.
- 1:17:36That has not been in existence now for quite some time.
- 1:17:38This is the field where they played the last tripleheader of baseball, where the bus were scurrying to get through.
- 1:17:44This is the field where one of the most memorable World Series events ever took place in 1925 in the seventh game against Washington with Walter Johnson pitching.
- 1:17:52In a scene that perhaps has never been seen before and never will be again in a downright driving rain pour, bases loaded bingo double and they beat Johnson in the center.
- 1:18:03Here's Miniman ofso, he's 0 for 2.
- 1:18:05Fly to center and then Burdett faced him in the fourth, got him on a roll out to second, jams him on the inside corner with a call strike, 0 and 1.
- 1:18:14Harry Krabs of Kansas City at first base, Tony Criccionello on the white socks at third.
- 1:18:20Miniman ofso, Nelly Fox and Al Kalan, the trio that Burdett will go through here in the sixth.
- 1:18:26Miniman ofso pops a foul off the right side, I don't think there's room for Randall, there is not, it's up over the National League dugout.
- 1:18:33Tumble to strike.
- 1:18:41Pittsburgh riders and fans have had their wonderful, wonderful times with Casey Stengel, having seen him around here and listened to him.
- 1:18:50Stengelisms are famous now I suppose and we're all over.
- 1:18:55And he got off a couple of mutes in the press conference yesterday.
- 1:18:59Miniman ofso, the American League's left fielder, 0 for 2, on the count of 0 and 2 on him, sidearm delivery sent in by Burdett, fell away.
- 1:19:07The attendance here today of 34,763 will not of course approach the record attendance of 69,831 which was set in Cleveland in 1935,
- 1:19:17which may be a cliff target third on the west coast in the Coliseum in Los Angeles.
- 1:19:21It of course having a greater capacity.
- 1:19:25No balls and six strikes. Flights are to mind all you fans out on the west coast.
- 1:19:30Application forms for the second all-star game available at the Dodger ticket office.
- 1:19:37No balls, two strikes to Miniman ofso.
- 1:19:45Jack Bricott was pointing out earlier a lot of the records with regards to the number of games in which he's competed will go by the wayside.
- 1:19:52The number of times he's played in the Miniman ofso right down the middle came Burdett with his match ball for strike three calls.
- 1:19:57So that's the sixth strikeout and Burdett has picked up his second.
- 1:20:04That'll bring up Kelly Fox who struck out and fouled out the third.
- 1:20:08As Jack pointed out if they start playing these games in pairs the records of like being in one like New Zealand 16 or so will mean nothing.
- 1:20:15Six strikes out on each side because you can in five years you can play in ten games very quickly obviously.
- 1:20:22Kelly Fox struck out, bats them left handed, swings golf a shot on the right side,
- 1:20:26Tipple charges, takes the bat, hop and blows onto Sepeda and they're at two away.
- 1:20:32This is the American League six inning two down and none on and the score is tied up at one one if you're just sitting in.
- 1:20:38Eddie Matthews long ball went out of the ballpark off early when in the first inning
- 1:20:42and Kline got it all even with a blast to left center in the fourth.
- 1:20:46Here he is now, he struck out in the first and homered over the 4.06 mark in left center field in the fourth inning.
- 1:20:55Drop off down third and Matthews on a bubble and he gets away from him, goes into short left and Kline is around first.
- 1:21:02The ball is recovered quickly by Wally Moon and it's Panora charged to Eddie Matthews and it'll be the first error of the ballgame.
- 1:21:11Kline aboard on a miscue at third and that'll bring up the slugging first baseman and half fielder of the New York Yankees, Moose Schuyen.
- 1:21:19Schuyen on the year at 293, 15 homers, 56 RBIs, rolled a second and swindled out to the left.
- 1:21:28Milwaukee Braves have four other great players going in this one right now.
- 1:21:33Here's the pitch, here's the delivery outside of ball, breaking ball that missed the outside corners of the right hand batting Moose.
- 1:21:39Matthews at third, Burdett and Chandler the batterie and the right fielder the incomparable Henri Aron.
- 1:21:47Sixth inning for the American Leaguers who have won the last two games of the All-Star Classic.
- 1:21:55Burdett checks the livers, there's a drive and the right center going to get in there for the basehead coming over fast to get that ball as Wally made.
- 1:22:01He's going to take a shot at that runner coming over to third, a slide fake made it the close play.
- 1:22:06K-line tries to go on Wally and it was bang bang at third. He's in there however under the fly.
- 1:22:15Gowans got a looper over the head of Temple in the right center field at K-line.
- 1:22:20It appeared to me he hesitated just a little bit coming around second and then really turned on the seed and Wally's throw was right to Matthews.
- 1:22:27But he split under the throw so we now have Rocky Cotter Vito up there for the American Leaguers.
- 1:22:32He struck out in the second, he's single up the middle in the fourth and the American Leaguers mount another offensive threat against Luberdett.
- 1:22:40Two on and two out, here's the pitch. Big chop hit on the left side.
- 1:22:46Ernie Banks wakes for the short half, flips it on to Johnny Temple in a forced scour and on the fourth side, left side is retired.
- 1:22:53No runs, one hit, one error and two left and we go at the, so at the end, at the middle of the sixth inning, the score is American League one and the National League one.
- 1:23:05Well, young Louis Apparicio has been certainly a whale of a man out here in his ball game today.
- 1:23:10You know this young Glob Wiv was the unanimous choice of the New York Yankees to hold down the all-star shortstop position.
- 1:23:17And good reason, he's robbed them of many a hit. Flashy in the field, Apparicio is also a big fashion place.
- 1:23:24He always looks top-notch. And a Gillette man, why, Louis tells us he was a booster of ours way back when he lived in Venezuela.
- 1:23:31And he's stayed with Gillette Blue Blades ever since. Little wonder, Gillette Blue Blades has the keenest edges ever put on steel.
- 1:23:37Smooth, mirror-finished edges that give you shave after shave with ease and comfort and just save money too.
- 1:23:43Gillette Blue Blades is a double-edge for extra convenience and economy. So if you change them less than half as often, use them more than twice as long as single-edge blades.
- 1:23:53When you ask for Gillette Blue Blades, get them in the handy zip-out dispenser that has a compartment on the back for the easy disposal of used blades.
- 1:24:00They cost 20 for 98 cents, 10 for 49 cents.
- 1:24:05The American League has now swung Mickey Mantle to center field.
- 1:24:09As he goes in, in place of Al Kailin, Mickey Mantle with a bad leg.
- 1:24:16But the New York Yankee speed demon goes to center field.
- 1:24:20Zick Power has not been put in at first. We're getting a double check.
- 1:24:27We're trying to find out who's been put in at first, the Platinum Fire, Ed Runge, or rather Joe Paparilla has come on to say that there is an incorrect statement made
- 1:24:36as to who's on Musial is going to be in here to bat in the National League sixth inning.
- 1:24:43And this puts him up there for 16 times that he's been in the Classic and he'll bat in place of Temple.
- 1:24:48Harvey Keane has gone to center and is not Mickey Mantle. So we'll have to go from the direction on the press box.
- 1:24:56There's delivery to Musial inside. Dan Musial batting for John Temple.
- 1:25:00Temple getting away at a big snap.
- 1:25:07From DeNora, Pennsylvania, marked by the city of Pittsburgh, staying the man.
- 1:25:14Great St. Louis Cardinal ballplayer. Ryan Dorn works to him upstairs, ball to two balls in those strikes.
- 1:25:26The press box, who had originally announced farther to our right that it would be Mantle and Satterfield,
- 1:25:33has now corrected and it'll be Harvey Keane, teammate of Al Kailah.
- 1:25:38Musial hits a pop-up on the right side, dropping back first baseman for it.
- 1:25:45And we'll have to check who that. It should be Zick Power, who has also gone in in place of Skowra.
- 1:25:50Anyhow, it's a pop-up to first.
- 1:25:53Satter is now at a Matthews, a home run in two and bats.
- 1:25:57In the first, over the right field screen, and in the third, fouled out the first.
- 1:26:04One down in the National League six, high from Ryan Dorn, who after he pitches just bounces around out there on the mound like he's on a Pogo stick.
- 1:26:14Eddie Sawyer, one of the few members of the Phi Beta Kappa Society, is coaching at first.
- 1:26:19And of course the manager of the field, over to third, Danny Mertau.
- 1:26:22One ball, no strike pitch to Matthews.
- 1:26:25Started to go for the fast ball late off it, it cuts him one and one.
- 1:26:28Henry Ernest on deck.
- 1:26:30There's all sorts of opportunities for a single to place the batter's Keane and Power in the batting order,
- 1:26:36so we'll not worry about just where they are yet until they come up. There they fall upstairs, two and one, Eddie.
- 1:26:43Matthews on the year 25 homers, 59 home runs.
- 1:26:46Five of the home runs he has struck in this ballpark this year.
- 1:26:50This has been one of his favorite targets, much to the lament of Pittsburgh Pirate followers.
- 1:26:56Two balls and a strike.
- 1:26:58The outfield changed him around to the right to give him a big gap in left center field.
- 1:27:02Dorn's fast ball hit foul back on the netting here, an account of 2-2.
- 1:27:06Ryan almost overpowered Eddie with a good riding fast ball that came in there.
- 1:27:17Chuck him out swinging. Number seven goes into the book.
- 1:27:23And here is Henry Ernest who struck out and aligned a short in his first two trips.
- 1:27:28The Milwaukee Braves on the rail of the right field in one of the most fantastic batters in baseball,
- 1:27:34modern handles, stayed way up over the 400 mark and somebody figured it out that if he went to the plate
- 1:27:40a number of times, just a month ago as he did last year, finished out the season that way,
- 1:27:45once before he'd end up hitting 322.
- 1:27:49There's Henry Ernest a drive over the shortstop position into left field.
- 1:27:53I know so, a flag bubble, but picks it up and holds it to a single.
- 1:27:57Henry Ernest has picked up the third hit of the afternoon for the National League and here's the say hey kid, Willie May.
- 1:28:04Willie Hayden lined to the pitcher and struck out.
- 1:28:11Henry Ernest is on the threat, one of the most fabled of all ball players, Willie May.
- 1:28:20Throw it over to first base, no damage, Henry Ernest staying a little close over there with a big power holding touch.
- 1:28:27Ryan Duren checks in here. In the 1-1 game the pitch is cut foul, back out of play.
- 1:28:33Henry Ernest was a key figure in the now famous Harvey Haddock perfect ball game when he inadvertently
- 1:28:48showed off second thinking that Adcock had only hit an inside ball inside the park in the 13th inning
- 1:28:55and in so doing he walked by Adcock and his nullified a home run.
- 1:29:00Two balls and a strike, here's the pitch, there's a smash and one hop off the chest of Amparicio,
- 1:29:06picks it up, gets it on in time for the force play to Fox and a nice play by Amparicio holding that ball in front of him.
- 1:29:12So it's no runs or hits, no errors and one left. At the end of sixth it's tied up 1-1.
- 1:29:22Throw it short, field short, feed short, the only way to get a feed save is to let, is to let, save to let.
- 1:29:39We've had a corrected attendance here from Les Biedemann, 35,277 and the correction occurred as a result of those not seeing the direct ticket sale, 35,277.
- 1:29:55The original attendance figure of 34,763 were given as a result of a turnstile count.
- 1:30:06Well ladies and gentlemen here comes the public who has rocked the baseball world, Elroy Faith.
- 1:30:12And it is fantastic that his earned run average is 0.83.
- 1:30:17Elroy has been in 54 innings, has won 12 and lost none and has not lost a ball against him.
- 1:30:22May 30, 1958 has won 17 consecutive games.
- 1:30:30Elroy Faith goes in there and Bill Masurasky goes to second base. Triandos up, he's 0-2.
- 1:30:37Elroy delivers up there at the ball. Triandos in the fourth inning as Jack Brickhouse pointed out, hit a shot in the right center field and only the great running speed of Henry Aaron flagged it down to prevent a couple of runs coming in.
- 1:30:49Triandos has won off the end of the best foul.
- 1:30:54Bill Masurasky is in at second base in place of John Temple, it's usual having batted for him.
- 1:31:03Elroy Faith works through Triandos.
- 1:31:07This fella throws the fourth ball, a good slider, good curveball and a fine fastball.
- 1:31:12One ball, one strike to Gus Triandos, the Baltimore catcher.
- 1:31:17The ground ball hits down toward third. Big hop up Eddie Matthews, spins it across to first baseman Cepeda and one is away in the American League seven.
- 1:31:27Here is catch third baseman Herman Killibrew hitting at 271 for the season. 28 homers and 70 RBIs.
- 1:31:34He's the major league leader in home runs. He's over 2 this afternoon having flied to center and rolled out to second base.
- 1:31:41Gors died at 1-1 in the American League seventh inning. Faith fourth ball, he's swinging on his big strike.
- 1:31:50He missed it by a foot. That fourth ball comes up most elusively and then drops about a foot, foot and a half.
- 1:31:56Just seems to die out there somewhere.
- 1:32:03Breaking ball outside, one ball, one strike.
- 1:32:09Luber dead, went three innings, is charged with one run. Four hits.
- 1:32:21Picked up two strikeouts, did not walk anybody.
- 1:32:25Here's the 1-1 pitch at strike call to M1 and 2.
- 1:32:33Here's the total net after taxes. Here will be $194,303.46 on the record attendance of fourth field.
- 1:32:41Killibrew strikes out.
- 1:32:46He looked at the Elroy face fourth ball and he did not see it.
- 1:32:57Little Elroy is a carver during the off season.
- 1:33:01Luis Aparicio, he's flied to right by the left. Two down in the American League seventh.
- 1:33:06Short tied at 1-1. Elroy faced the right-hander. He's only 5'8, weighs 150 pounds.
- 1:33:10Turnball inside, one ball, a strike.
- 1:33:13Jim Bunnings has finished warming up. Down the left field line for the American Leaguers.
- 1:33:22Theron having completed his three short innings. Now back by Aparicio.
- 1:33:34Seven strikeouts for both sides, but we're getting closer and closer to a record.
- 1:33:41For an old star classic. One ball, one strike, did Luis Aparicio. Two down and none on.
- 1:33:46There's an attempt for the bunny missus. One and two.
- 1:33:52Got the front to the base, hit two. Matthews in very quickly from third.
- 1:33:54But Aparicio didn't get onto that ball. One and two.
- 1:34:04One ball, two strike pitch. Just low, two-two. Breaking ball.
- 1:34:12Matthews put the National League in front in the first inning with a home run against early wins.
- 1:34:17And a home run by Al Kalon of Detroit, tied in the fourth off Luberdip.
- 1:34:22Two balls, two strikes, Aparicio. Shot came out.
- 1:34:30Three up and three down. And so at the middle of the seventh inning, the score is American League one for National League one.
- 1:34:39You know, when the Gillette Safety Razor Company announces a new and better shaving instrument,
- 1:34:43you can be sure this means greater comfort to millions of friends.
- 1:34:47However, Gillette knows from experience that many of you fans are so fond of your present Gillette
- 1:34:52that if you had to, you'd want to replace it with one exactly the same.
- 1:34:56That's why for just one dollar, you can still get a Gillette Super Speed Razor.
- 1:35:01And they still come in three models. Light, regular, or heavy.
- 1:35:05The light is for men with lighter beards, regular for average skin and beards,
- 1:35:09and heavy for men with dense, hard-to-shave beards.
- 1:35:13At the price, just one dollar, you can't buy a finer shaving instrument.
- 1:35:18So don't worry. If you ever want to replace your present Super Speed Razor with another just like it,
- 1:35:22they'll be available at a store near you.
- 1:35:25As a reminder, it only costs one dollar for the razor.
- 1:35:28Gillette Blue Blade Dispenser and Handsome Cavalcade.
- 1:35:32L.R. Faye came through with two strikeouts, which is, ladies and gentlemen,
- 1:35:38has been his great pitch on his forward ball.
- 1:35:42And the fact that at 5'8", he is a fellow who gives you all sorts of motion out there
- 1:35:47and comes right down with a pitch that elusively and bafflingly breaks down and in
- 1:35:52to a right-hand batter sometimes and then down and into a left-hand batter.
- 1:35:55He just throws the forward ball hoping to get him out of any particular type of jam.
- 1:36:01He's ideally situated and everything about him is perfect for a release pitching.
- 1:36:06Well, when he comes in normally, the bucks are in jam.
- 1:36:09And he gets you to hit that ball on the ground, either strikes you out or gets you to pop it into a double play.
- 1:36:15Now then, big Jim Bunning of the Detroit Tigers is coming in.
- 1:36:18His slider, got him by Whitlow Watt, by the way, who is now the pitching coach for the Milwaukee Braves,
- 1:36:24made him a real major league pitcher.
- 1:36:26He now hit the Red Sox July 20th last year, you might recall.
- 1:36:30Jim Bunning now pitching, the other day, the Detroit Tigers, is 1-7 off 6, an ERA of 4.72.
- 1:36:41Boston's Frank Malone has come in to play at third.
- 1:36:45Bunning is in to do the pitching.
- 1:36:48And we'll give you the rundown on everybody else.
- 1:36:50There's Stank, long drive, there's Field, going way back,
- 1:36:53any Minnesota, gives a good-bye, it's off the wall.
- 1:36:56And the bases for Bengal Banks as he bombs it high up against the standard.
- 1:37:07There's a light standard out there.
- 1:37:11That is about 375 feet from the home plate section.
- 1:37:17And he bombed it right to the base of it.
- 1:37:20And Josh missed the home run by inches and now has check-in with his second double.
- 1:37:26And that's the fifth hit of the ball game.
- 1:37:28And here is Orlando Cepeda, who is over 2.
- 1:37:31He popped a short and grounded him to a double play.
- 1:37:35Malone, in the infield on the left side.
- 1:37:38Malone and shortstop Aparicio.
- 1:37:41Aparicio makes the catch in behind the pitching mound.
- 1:37:45So we have one out.
- 1:37:50Now we have Wally Moon, the left fielder, who walks and struck out.
- 1:37:56Whitey Ford of the New York Yankees is now throwing at the American League bullpen.
- 1:38:01Wally Moon is up there.
- 1:38:05Here's the pitch.
- 1:38:07The curve is high ball on.
- 1:38:09Banks let off with a double in the second.
- 1:38:11It's Cepeda, pops the short on the first pitch in the second inning.
- 1:38:14And there, Lightning struck twice in the same way in the seventh.
- 1:38:17Double Banks lead it off.
- 1:38:18Cepeda went on the first pitch and hit it straight up the shoot.
- 1:38:21Four shortstop Aparicio.
- 1:38:23One ball and no strikes.
- 1:38:24The left-hand batting Wally Moon.
- 1:38:26Short tied 1-1 in the National League seventh.
- 1:38:28Time call is Triando.
- 1:38:30And Funning want to talk it over.
- 1:38:33Ryan Durant, in his three-inning snow run, without only one hit, struck out four.
- 1:38:39And walks but one batter.
- 1:38:42Two balls and no strikes to the left-hand batting Moon.
- 1:38:44They shade him a little bit around to the right.
- 1:38:46Fast ball down underneath the knees.
- 1:38:48Two balls and no strikes.
- 1:38:54Ernie Banks, who does not specialize in the long high fly ball home run,
- 1:38:58but more in the low screeching shot,
- 1:39:01barely missed one as he hit the top of the light-standard screen,
- 1:39:06and it came back in the park to remain in play.
- 1:39:09Three inside the Moon.
- 1:39:15Del Crandall is on deck.
- 1:39:16And now we're to that point of the ball game where both sides.
- 1:39:19Manager Brett Haney of the National League champion Milwaukee Braves
- 1:39:22and of the National American League champion Casey Stengel of the NPS.
- 1:39:26They're throwing on a 3-0, 3-0, and bouncing out of play, 3-1.
- 1:39:30So we're going on the first ones here on some of them for the National League.
- 1:39:34The strategy is, and they gave him the green light to go on the 3-0.
- 1:39:37If he was in there, they thought he might be able to give it a rest.
- 1:39:44Three balls and a strike to while he moves.
- 1:39:48We're down to that point though where the managers will be doing a lot of shuffling around.
- 1:39:533-1 pitch.
- 1:39:54Moon flicks a foul out of play to the left, 3-2.
- 1:40:06They're running a regular season of 20 games started 18.
- 1:40:09It pitched 124 innings for the Detroit ball club, winning seven, losing six.
- 1:40:13From the standpoint of the American League pitching stars,
- 1:40:17that's the highest turn-run average of all that are here with a 4.72.
- 1:40:22But that's respectful in this day and age of a long ball
- 1:40:25and lightning-like shots out of the ballpark at any moment.
- 1:40:28Three and two to Moon.
- 1:40:30The pitch.
- 1:40:31There's strike three called.
- 1:40:32The ball is down by Triandosa now. He tags Wally.
- 1:40:36And that's strikeout number eight against the National League.
- 1:40:44Well, we have 16 strikeouts in the ball game.
- 1:40:48And this will send Brody Jack Brickhouse to the record books again for us.
- 1:40:51Well, we double-checked everything.
- 1:40:53Now catcher Del Candel who struck out in the 1st.
- 1:40:56A roll to third is the better.
- 1:40:58They're going to play him around to the left.
- 1:41:01Pitch up the middle. It's a base hit.
- 1:41:04And here comes Ernie Banks around third.
- 1:41:06Here's the shoot by Harvey Keene.
- 1:41:07The throw is not in time.
- 1:41:08Here goes the runner, Candle to second base.
- 1:41:10The night's in the league in front.
- 1:41:12To the right.
- 1:41:25Del Candel just reached out and snapped that little shot.
- 1:41:29And a center field.
- 1:41:31And Banks scores the lead runner now, Bill Masurowski.
- 1:41:35The great second baseman of the Pittsburgh Pirates is the better.
- 1:41:39Masurowski in the regular year at 267.
- 1:41:42Five home runs, 34 RBI.
- 1:41:48And as Jack pointed out a while back, he goes in a one-for-four clip, but bingo.
- 1:41:52When you need to hit, that's when the one out of four comes up.
- 1:41:55And it did here. Masurowski's got a left field.
- 1:41:57It's going to be a base hit.
- 1:41:59Here comes Candle around third to score.
- 1:42:01Masurowski's trying to go to second.
- 1:42:02The run gets in there, slide.
- 1:42:03He's out at second base.
- 1:42:05It's a bingo. The run counts.
- 1:42:10Nice feeling play by Minosso.
- 1:42:12The throw went on into Fox at second base.
- 1:42:14Candle scores from second.
- 1:42:17And it's a two runs on three hits nowhere, there's nobody left.
- 1:42:21At the end of seventh, the score is the National League three, the American League one.
- 1:42:26Two, paper-maid, holiday, a tower 79.
- 1:42:37Just two paper-maids right every time, over handprint, fingerprint, re-saw grind.
- 1:42:42Guaranteed not to skip, glitz-glide or sputter.
- 1:42:45The new holiday, even right over butter.
- 1:42:48You can take a stick of butter, now lift it here.
- 1:42:51And on a piece of paper you can make a sphere.
- 1:42:54It's an ordinary pen, you can try to write a rhyme, but you'll skip over the butter.
- 1:42:58Every time, then pick up the paper-maid, holiday pen, go through the butter test.
- 1:43:04Once again, watch it right through the butter.
- 1:43:07Without a slip, this new paper-maid, guaranteed not to skip.
- 1:43:11Two, paper-maid, holiday, a tower 79.
- 1:43:18On the side we go now to the American League eighth inning, and flagged, Miles Ohm of Boston stands in.
- 1:43:26Miles Ohm in the regular season, hitting a 278, 10 homerun, 39 RBI.
- 1:43:31He's a right-hand batter, Roy Face delivers outside in low ball one.
- 1:43:35This game now sets up as Roy Face's game to win and Jim Bunnings to lose, as it now stands.
- 1:43:42No National League pitcher, as Jack points out, is issued a walk so far.
- 1:43:45There's a pop, is it behind second base, Maseratky goes off to his right, dances around underneath, one out.
- 1:43:57National League has not won the last couple of ball games, leading in this one three to one, as now Mnuchinupso, who is 0-3.
- 1:44:04Flagged defender, went out second to first and struck out.
- 1:44:07All six pitchers have struck out somebody in this ball game.
- 1:44:15Mnuchinupso, left side, looking for it.
- 1:44:20Stays with that dog and comes through there.
- 1:44:23And Roy Face is showing everyone in Pittsburgh and coast to coast, as you listen to the broadcasts and around the world and in Canada,
- 1:44:33he's one of the great pitchers of the major leagues in relief.
- 1:44:37L.A. Pops is up there, he struck out, fouled out to third and rolled out to second.
- 1:44:41National League leads the American League three to one in the 26th minute of the All-Star Classic at Ford Field.
- 1:44:48Down inside the ball, as Elroy jammed him with a fast slider.
- 1:44:53Little Roy Face with a heart as big as a church, 5'8", 150 pounds, has topped the American Leagueers' goal thus far.
- 1:45:01Next delivery, right up the middle, almost, see Horne down there, goes on to the center field for the base hit.
- 1:45:06So no sooner said what he was doing than bingo, Kelly gets the base hit.
- 1:45:11And that came awfully close to catching him on the bare hands.
- 1:45:14So that's the fifth hit for the American League.
- 1:45:19And now Harvey Keane gets his first shot at it.
- 1:45:23He is the center fielder, laying out here for the Detroit Tigers, 3'56", on the regular season.
- 1:45:29He has three homers, 33 RBI.
- 1:45:32Right-hand batter takes the ball from Roy Face.
- 1:45:37National League three, the American League one in the top half of the eighth, on a brilliant, sunshiny afternoon from the city of Pittsburgh.
- 1:45:46A 1-0, bat-handled foul out of play to the left, one and o'er.
- 1:45:57One ball and one strike, two down, and Kelly Fox, at first on a base hit, is first and fourth bat, a single right up the middle.
- 1:46:05And it had to be pretty well-struck to get by Face because Delroy is one of the better feeling pitchers in the game.
- 1:46:14Pretty deep in the batter's box is Harvey Keane.
- 1:46:16One ball, one on the swing, two. Took the big swing and nothing was there. One ball, two strikes.
- 1:46:31Bill Rigg may for lack of a better to do on the off-season to get into a 2-0 at throwing that good ball.
- 1:46:36There's a delivery low, ball two, two-two.
- 1:46:39When Rigg was asked why, he said, well, I just wanted to see if I could do something to get this guy ruffled up a bit.
- 1:46:46But nothing seems to bother Delroy. He really doesn't know who's batting. He just has certain way of pitchers and that's it.
- 1:46:52Two balls and two strikes.
- 1:46:59Keane, you know, was moved right over to right field by Jimmy Dykes and clicked immediately over there.
- 1:47:03Two-two pitch, and there's a ground ball, bat-handled foul down third, two-two.
- 1:47:08The Tigers off to a very bad start, as everyone knows by now, and Jimmy Dykes, who used to be the coach for the Pittsburgh Pirates,
- 1:47:15was then asked if he would take over the managerial range of the Detroit team and zoom them into contention.
- 1:47:21Not overnight, because when you're about 0-15, you don't zoom anywhere overnight.
- 1:47:26Two-two to Keane, low outside, ball three. Three balls, two strikes.
- 1:47:38Joe Papparella, the American League, calling the balls and strikes.
- 1:47:41Al Barlich has the front side.
- 1:47:43And the game that was tied up in 1-1 broke open in the seventh when Banks deviled his second devil and cradled in the moment.
- 1:47:51And the Radgey single, when it breaks, and it's ball four. That's the first walk given up by the National League pitching this afternoon.
- 1:47:57And brings up the moose.
- 1:47:59Scanlon, no, take that back, brings up power.
- 1:48:05Vic Power of Kansas City.
- 1:48:12Well, really, of Cleveland, Vic was at Kansas City. He's hitting at 3-0-1.
- 1:48:16He's been moving around quite a bit, and he has nine homers, 36 RBI's. He's a very fine baseball player.
- 1:48:26Low ball one.
- 1:48:30Another great relief hurler. When you speak of fine relief hurlers, the Chicago Cubs have a pair in both Elston and Henry.
- 1:48:37Right catch, 2-1-1.
- 1:48:51And there he is, the American leaguer up Kansas City. He's a left-hander. They started off this eighth inning with every tariff mile zone in Minnesota with very little trouble. Then Fox single, he walked keen.
- 1:49:07Power gets a dive into center field for the Bay City. Here comes Willie May, skipping for the ball.
- 1:49:12And will make no play on Nellie Fox, and will throw the ball into the basket short, and the American League picks back into the ball game at 3-2, in favor of the Nationals now by only one.
- 1:49:27Oh, that's going on for Vic, something the National League teams have not been able to do.
- 1:49:33And here comes Ted Williams.
- 1:49:40He's back for the right fielder of the Indians, Rocky Calabito. Ted Williams hitting a 2-1-7.
- 1:49:47Five homers and 18 RBI's, but don't let that fool you.
- 1:49:53The uncomfortable, blended Twitter. Ted Williams.
- 1:50:01Bang-Durrell makes his move. 2-1, 2-2, 3-2, the National League in the eighth. The ball game now starts to turn into a loud and only a very unpromised it would be.
- 1:50:13So that's the pitch. Ball outside to Williams. Do switches around on that plate. And look at every NCAA athlete up there.
- 1:50:28One ball, no strike pitch. Low ball, 2. Ted's been in every all-star game that's ever been played except for towards his rookie year and those years in which he missed due to being in the service.
- 1:50:40This fellow totally eclipsed the great record. The five-shot stop, Marky Vaughn, hung up for homers and he just pounded him out of everything.
- 1:50:482-0 pitch. Ball free to Williams. Roy Face is running into trouble.
- 1:51:063-0 to Ted Williams. American League in the top of the eighth with 2-1 and 2-0. Trailing 3-2. Williams batting for Calo Vito. Roy Face on the 3-0.
- 1:51:18Thanks, Cole.
- 1:51:21Ted, you might recall, broke his shoulder at Comiskey Park in the all-star game in 1950 when he went back to catch a fly ball hit by the great Ralph Keiner of the Pittsburgh Pirates.
- 1:51:35Keiner tied it up and Shadice won it. Ball to Williams. Roy Face is loaded. That is the second walk.
- 1:51:44That move is keen over the third. Puts the power up at second and brings up Baltimore's Jeff Fionnado who's 0-3.
- 1:51:55Unless we get a pinch hitter. Stangle walking up and down.
- 1:52:06Oh, wait a moment. They've called time. Looks like we're going to get a runner for Ted Williams.
- 1:52:11Going to be Gil McDougal of the Yankees to run for Ted Williams. McDougal, the winner of the Lou Gehrig 5-0, the state of Memorial Award, is the F-League's fifth-five most wanted player.
- 1:52:30That's good. Good strokemanship and everything you'd ever want to be. Treandte-Sempion takes the strike from Roy Face. Face is loaded before the American League. They have Harvey Keane at third.
- 1:52:41Pick up power at second. McDougal running for Williams at first.
- 1:52:46The outfield is shading Treandte-Sempion around to the left.
- 1:52:51There's the foul back going through Treandte-Sempion in the regular season. There's 20 homers and 50 RBIs.
- 1:52:59He's playing in a tough ballpark for home runs in Baltimore.
- 1:53:05He's a big fella.
- 1:53:06And he's the guy that has caught the dazzling assortment of knuckleballs, and in fact, like Will Hill.
- 1:53:12No balls, two strikes to Big Gus Biondo.
- 1:53:15Base runners lead away, as Little Roy Fates swings into the windup.
- 1:53:20Around comes the arm, in comes the pitch, and it's a foul back out of play.
- 1:53:233-2, the National League in front, in the eighth inning.
- 1:53:29The American League strikes back with a run win with two out, Nellie Fox singled up the middle.
- 1:53:34Harvey Keene and Watt and Power singled in the middle, and in came Fox to score.
- 1:53:40Then Ted Williams for the batter for Calovito drill.
- 1:53:43Little Roy and the bases are loaded, it's nothing in through to Gus Biondo.
- 1:53:54Now Roy in a long spare, now ready to go.
- 1:53:57Here's the O2 pitch.
- 1:53:59Ground ball, inside third, save ball, extra bases coming up.
- 1:54:02It's trying to spare at least a fair run.
- 1:54:04The ball comes out to the left field of Wally Murn, shoots it on in as they double for Gus Biondo.
- 1:54:09Down inside third in the National League, now trail four to three.
- 1:54:19Harvey Keene comes in to score, and Vic Power scores from second base.
- 1:54:25Biondo, the catcher, double pumps a fair run.
- 1:54:29And Roy Hamie comes out now to suck, as the American League has done to Elroy.
- 1:54:35What no one was able to do in the National League, in addition to Elroy, walked a pair of batters.
- 1:54:42And when you walk a couple of guys and you're playing in an all-star game, you usually get yourself into trouble.
- 1:54:48And Biondo for the bases loaded, lags a double just inside third.
- 1:54:53That sent Max Zuggles over to third after the other two runners Keene and Power had scored.
- 1:54:59So three runs in here and the ending was two outs, and it's now four to three in the eighth.
- 1:55:06The American League, and they have Daly and Whitey Ford warming up.
- 1:55:22Pete Reynolds is coming out. We're going to wait and see what they're going to do.
- 1:55:29We're going to get a pitcher coming in.
- 1:55:36We're going to get a look at him for a moment.
- 1:55:38I thought it was John Elston originally that had been warming up,
- 1:55:40but he walked in like he might be John Antonelli of the San Francisco Giants.
- 1:55:43From what I've seen, it's John Antonelli.
- 1:55:46It is John Antonelli of the San Francisco Giants.
- 1:55:49All right, that's five thirty seconds for station identification.
- 1:55:54WGY, WGFM, connect today.
- 1:55:57Now as always, Sera Pilka Vichy leads the league in sales.
- 1:56:00No wonder, because only the genuine Sera Pilka Vichy with the famous yellow label has that extra dry vichy tang.
- 1:56:07Assures you a perfect mixed drink every time.
- 1:56:10Friends, don't be misled by imitations that taste like plain soft soda.
- 1:56:14Demand a genuine Sera Pilka Vichy.
- 1:56:16Get the yellow label, yellow label, yellow label, yellow label.
- 1:56:25L.R.F. has pitched one and two-thirds innings and is now the pitcher of record
- 1:56:32and is replaced by John Antonelli, the savvy fastball of the San Francisco Giants.
- 1:56:38John Antonelli with an earned run average of 2.66 has won twelve and lost four.
- 1:56:45And but for L.R.F. this twelve and O record would be the top hurler from the standpoint of record in the national league.
- 1:56:52Now, Reynolds is in the game and out. He was a left-hand batter.
- 1:56:55So catch him and put in Roy Severs, the home run hitting slugger of the Washington Senators.
- 1:57:02That's Killebrew who had given way earlier to Malzah.
- 1:57:07Malzah is the man that is being hit for, I do believe, unless,
- 1:57:12and we'll have to wait development unless the pitcher was put into that spot.
- 1:57:19But for the moment we'll call with Severs, Severs, Roy Severs in there of Washington,
- 1:57:24hitting at 2.36. He has nine homers, twenty-one RBI.
- 1:57:28He's a right-hand batter.
- 1:57:30Roy Severs is charged with three runs and is responsible for Triandos' second shooting score.
- 1:57:43Now Triandos is being run for by Mickey Mantle of the Yankees.
- 1:57:46Mickey Mantle has gone in to run at second base for Gus Triandos.
- 1:57:53Spangos shoots the bench and they all have fireworks here on the eighth inning.
- 1:58:04Shots, Mantle runs for Triandos. Changes, Galoha are in order.
- 1:58:13Mantle Valley works down to Severs inside the ball.
- 1:58:18Severs in 57, his 42 homerun, is knocked in 114.
- 1:58:23So he left the league. He's not off to that kind of a start this year,
- 1:58:27but has had the great pick-up of Adelson and Killebrew helping him.
- 1:58:30There's a shrinking in there by John Andonelli.
- 1:58:32One ball, one strike.
- 1:58:34Andonelli in the regular season ball to John.
- 1:58:38Been in 21 ball, game started 20.
- 1:58:41Winning 12, losing four.
- 1:58:43Curves down inside, ball two, two balls and a strike.
- 1:58:47Mac Diggle is at third.
- 1:58:50He ran for Ted Riddick.
- 1:58:52On at second base is Mickey Mantle running for Gus Triandos.
- 1:58:56And Severs is up there batting.
- 1:58:59Eighth man to get up in this inning.
- 1:59:01Pitches of ball three, three balls and a strike.
- 1:59:06Pitched on the outside corner.
- 1:59:10Two men down by Roy Fates on the American League side of the eighth.
- 1:59:13Went and pushed out of the thick away.
- 1:59:15And before you knew it, had themselves three run, three one pitch receivers.
- 1:59:19All four and they're loaded up.
- 1:59:22That's the third walk in all three walks in this inning.
- 1:59:28Now, Louis Aparicio is due to bat.
- 1:59:32And is Aparicio being called out? Wait will we see.
- 1:59:38Stengel is making a ton of moves.
- 1:59:43I started to tell you earlier, Stengel you know, really flabbergasted the city of Pittsburgh when he said,
- 1:59:48Now this early win is rather agent but still has good stuff.
- 1:59:51And I must say he's experienced what I don't think will make him frightened when he sees all those National League names.
- 1:59:58So I pick him when Wilhelm goes six on Sunday so I can't pitch him with his own catcher Triandos catching him like I want.
- 2:00:04But this win has been around.
- 2:00:06That's what Stengel said at the brush conference last night,
- 2:00:09that by the time it was unraveled by everyone concerned, turned out to be, that he was going to start early win.
- 2:00:16Sherem Lawler, the white star, is coming out. He's a catcher.
- 2:00:21Sherem hitting a 273. 12 homers, 49 RBIs on the regular two.
- 2:00:27He's a nice man to get up.
- 2:00:37He's a nice man to get up in this inning.
- 2:00:40Bases are loaded for the second time in the inning.
- 2:00:44McDougal on third.
- 2:00:46Mickey Mantle on second.
- 2:00:48Roy Sebers is on it first.
- 2:00:50And John Sherem Lawler up there, right hand better.
- 2:00:52Swing ground ball down for third.
- 2:00:54Up comes Matthews off the wrist and steps on third for the fourth time.
- 2:00:57That ball came right up his wrist.
- 2:00:59Really held on to it.
- 2:01:01And so the National League gets out of it.
- 2:01:03It showed three runs.
- 2:01:05Three hits, no errors, and three left.
- 2:01:09And so at the middle of the eighth, the score is the American League four, the National League three.
- 2:01:15Well, you know, we just watched Casey Stangle make a ton of moves.
- 2:01:19And we'll have to watch him again after this and we'll see how many changes he makes.
- 2:01:23Casey is kind of famous for the way he can switch around his players and come up with a winner.
- 2:01:28The old professor has just recently changed regs to always a Gillette man.
- 2:01:33He's now using that new Gillette 195 adjustable.
- 2:01:36Here's what he says about it.
- 2:01:38I thought I was getting the finest shades possible until I tried this adjustable.
- 2:01:41Now I'm more of a Gillette man than ever.
- 2:01:44Be sure you see this amazing new regs because never before has there been a shaving instrument like it.
- 2:01:49You set an adjusting collar on the handle to match your skin and beard.
- 2:01:52You can turn, you know, to nine different degrees of edge exposures and angles.
- 2:01:56Within this range, there's a setting that delivers a clean shave,
- 2:01:59fast shave with comfort that's nothing short of sensational.
- 2:02:02Gillette guarantees that or your money back.
- 2:02:04The Gillette 195 adjustable is so popular many stores are out of stock.
- 2:02:08So if you've been having trouble finding an order one now, watch it from your dealer.
- 2:02:12He'll be receiving a new supply as soon as production permits.
- 2:02:16Only $1.95 complete with blue blade dispenser and travel cape.
- 2:02:21Well, ladies and gentlemen, a few changes have been made and Whitey Ford of the Yankees is on as a pitcher.
- 2:02:33And Mickey Mantle's in the outfield.
- 2:02:36We'll have to make these changes for you.
- 2:02:39Whitey Ford is pitching. That we know.
- 2:02:46Roller is catching.
- 2:02:52McDougal has gone to short.
- 2:03:01Mantle's in center field.
- 2:03:04No, check that. He's in right.
- 2:03:06Mantle's in right.
- 2:03:11If you're trying to keep a score or whatever they bat, don't worry about it yet.
- 2:03:16We'll get you straightened out on that.
- 2:03:19We go to the National League 8 and Ken Boyer is going to bat.
- 2:03:24You're batting place of our pitcher, John Antonelli.
- 2:03:27I believe he was in the number one spot, Mazurowski.
- 2:03:31Casey Stangl has got the plate on by Joe Paparello wrapped up in a long monologue down there.
- 2:03:41He's got a center fielder in right and a right fielder in center.
- 2:03:45Jack, you see him all the time in Chicago.
- 2:03:47I presume these maneuvers are no strange thing at all in Chicago fandom.
- 2:03:52No, nothing at all.
- 2:03:53Anything Casey does is really inserting himself with surprises.
- 2:03:58Well, here we are looking at it with Mantle in right field and Keane in center and Ken Boyer batting
- 2:04:05and Whitey Ford on the hill and the curve is in for the called strike.
- 2:04:09We'll catch you up on every record in the book when we get the opportunity.
- 2:04:17No ball for one strike with a left-hander.
- 2:04:20Fires down outside for the ball.
- 2:04:23Whitey Ford of the Yankees has an earned run average of 3.20, has 1.8 and lost five for the champion in 1959.
- 2:04:37The 1-1 pitch is run on by Boyer and Miss, 1 and 2.
- 2:04:45This now sets it up where Bunning is the pitcher of record and Faith is the pitcher of record for the losing side,
- 2:04:52for the moment.
- 2:04:53Here's the 1 and 2.
- 2:04:54Curve ball bounces away from our lotto, 2-2.
- 2:05:02Last half of the eighth inning.
- 2:05:03The National League trailing now 4-3.
- 2:05:05Ken Boyer up there to see what he can do.
- 2:05:08Try to lead off base end, 2-2.
- 2:05:13Ground foul down third.
- 2:05:15Boyer, you know, is the fine third baseman of the St. Louis Cards.
- 2:05:21He's hitting a 3-0-4 currently, 16 homers and 56 RBIs.
- 2:05:25For a big man, he's perhaps one of the fastest men in all of baseball for his size.
- 2:05:29Great hands, great range at third.
- 2:05:312-2 pitch by Ford.
- 2:05:33Check swing on a fastball that took off.
- 2:05:35Tailed out.
- 2:05:36They look like the screwball, but Matt Allen tells us that his fastball that tails is not the screwball, although it reacts like it.
- 2:05:413-2.
- 2:05:483-2 pitch to Boyer.
- 2:05:50There's a chop off the left side, and it's on third in the left center for the base end.
- 2:05:54McNewell going over from short, couldn't get it.
- 2:05:56Center fielder Keane comes up, whacks it down, and Boyer has a base end.
- 2:06:04Well, now let's see.
- 2:06:05Remember, the National League is the home team.
- 2:06:08Their opportunity is always to have the last at-bat.
- 2:06:13Dick Kurt is coming out.
- 2:06:15Good for Pittsburgh is coming out, and he's down to be not only a fine runner, but any of us that they get to do sky storm is one of the better hit-and-run players of the game.
- 2:06:27Richard Marlgood, who had to make the substitution for him, whether he would be a professional baseball player or a professional basketball player,
- 2:06:36and at Duke University, with one of the most famous basketball players of all time, he's a Pittsburgh boy.
- 2:06:44Matt or Matthew?
- 2:06:46Dick Groves.
- 2:06:55Richard Groves hitting a 2-7-0.
- 2:06:57Five homers, 36 RBI.
- 2:06:59There's the bat.
- 2:07:00Witte Forte comes up, throws it on to First Bay Tower, who makes the play there.
- 2:07:05On the sacrifice, Boyer's in a second.
- 2:07:14Dick Groves, you know, was the room head of the vice president's brother, Ed Nixon, down at Duke.
- 2:07:33So he and Dick, the vice president and Dick Groves, have had a wonderful time visiting here in Pittsburgh.
- 2:07:38Here's Henry Aaron up, cutting the ball for the single in the sixth inning.
- 2:07:42The national league needs a run. They're down by one, four to three in here.
- 2:07:47Witte Forte delivers, fast ball low, one ball, no strike.
- 2:07:51Time call. Lauer wants to go out and talk it over now with Witte Forte.
- 2:07:56Jim Funning pitched one inning, gave up two runs.
- 2:08:02And the ones that put him in the soup, and then saw his team come back for enough runs to give him the blue chips for the moment.
- 2:08:11Gave up three hits. Stuck out one. Did not walk anybody.
- 2:08:19Bow back by Henry Aaron, one and one. A real tremendous threat at the plate is the right fielder of the Milwaukee Braves, Henry Aaron.
- 2:08:26A lunging rattlesnake type of hitter. Has tremendous risk.
- 2:08:32See it's a ball that'll start out with a short sample leap forward many times. A left fielder will want to go high over the wall.
- 2:08:41That kind. One-one delivery outside. Two balls and a strike.
- 2:08:46With one out of the score, American League four is an action to league three.
- 2:08:51Foyer is at second base with a tying run, and Henry Aaron is working against Witte Forte of the Yankees.
- 2:08:59Buddy Daley of Kansas City warming up again.
- 2:09:04Secretary of the ballgame, traveling secretary, and the secretary for the National and the American League, Robert C. Wright, from the Pittsburgh Pirates.
- 2:09:14He's down below checking on the comfort of all the fans.
- 2:09:18There's a high chopper up on the left side. In there, a big step.
- 2:09:21And Foyer comes down around third, and it's a single for Henry Aaron. That's all tight.
- 2:09:39Henry Aaron ties it up with a ball that had eyes on it.
- 2:09:42The ball is raised and leaped by everybody.
- 2:09:46As the ball players say, anything that gets by a pitcher or two infielders, suggests every time anybody goes at it, why it seems to run away from you.
- 2:09:57That's what's up there. Here's Maysup. He's 0 for 3. Witte Forte works a curve into the third ball.
- 2:10:034-4 ballgame in a real filler, as these two great squads from the American and the National League put on a devastating game of home runs and running and thrills galore.
- 2:10:17The pitch swings by Willie, trying to put it out of the ballpark one and one.
- 2:10:22A home run by K. Lyon as an example, and the one by Matthews marked the first two homers in the last three games.
- 2:10:32And as Jack points out and did earlier, no extra bases at all last year. So here we're in with everything.
- 2:10:38Willie Maysup, Henry Aaron off first. Pick power holding pitch.
- 2:10:42Outside, ball two, two balls and a strike.
- 2:10:45Down in the right field, Brokane. Foyer's warming up.
- 2:10:54Two balls and a strike.
- 2:10:59First play, good job, deep right center fielder, way back on County Keynes.
- 2:11:03He can't catch it. The ball's at the top, 36 mark. Henry Aaron's got a star.
- 2:11:07Willie Maysup around second. Willie comes to third.
- 2:11:10I'm hoping to go for the right center fielder for Mays.
- 2:11:33K. C. Sango has come out of the dugout. That's going to be all for Whitey Ford.
- 2:11:41A booming triple by Willie Mays. Over the head of Harvey Keynes. Hit at the 436 mark on one hop.
- 2:11:49And in came the big run that put Whitey Ford in the soup.
- 2:12:01And Jack Brickhouse just points out a very interesting observation.
- 2:12:05And you can see it as he walks in.
- 2:12:07But daily, of Kansas City, who's a knuckleball pitcher, his right arm is considerably shorter than his left arm.
- 2:12:13And he's a left hand pitcher, it must be pointed out.
- 2:12:16So sometimes the implements of the trade develop the hand, all the arms, all the extremities in such a way that they become outside.
- 2:12:25And one has against the other. Here's Whitey Ford sucking off the hill.
- 2:12:29Whitey pitched exactly one third of an inning. And it was a sacrifice front by Jones who got that out in.
- 2:12:35He's charged with two runs and could be tagged with another. He gave up three hits.
- 2:12:41To Boyer, to Aaron, and the triple by Mays.
- 2:12:46No strikeouts, no one. And daily, saw the national league as forged into the league.
- 2:12:52How about a score of five to four? And based on what we've seen, there's more to follow.
- 2:12:58But daily, of Kansas City.
- 2:13:03In the regular season, one eight lost five. Left hand knuckleballer and Sherm Lawler will get the problem of trying to handle him.
- 2:13:13They have made all the changes in America.
- 2:13:23And really, when started, just to refresh your memory on this, and in three innings, about one run on two hits, struck out three.
- 2:13:32Goddale pitched a perfect three innings.
- 2:13:35It's just been announced and Jack Leans over to tell me about it.
- 2:13:38There have been six players that have been batting in the seventh position in the lineup for the American League.
- 2:13:44And I want to tell you, you can understand easily how.
- 2:13:46They just keep, they're saying they'll keep firing them from one end of the spots to the other.
- 2:13:51Now what it may is that third, and let's see what the American League infield will do.
- 2:13:55It is now thorn.
- 2:14:05That third, he's a tight MacDougald and short, Fox is second, and the power is first, and they're all up.
- 2:14:11The right hand batting Ernie Banks, who has two hits today, both doubles.
- 2:14:16Short a run, that was back in the seventh inning. So the long ball has been used by the National League to forge into the lead.
- 2:14:24And Willie May has ever a threat.
- 2:14:26Dances around at third, pitch to Banks, knuckleball strike called.
- 2:14:35Four balls and one strike from Butt Daly, who is the fifth pitcher for the American League All-Stars this afternoon.
- 2:14:46Daly checks on Willie May as it serves.
- 2:14:49Infield stood up outfield around to the left of Banks.
- 2:14:56It's a five-four ball game last half of the eighth. Here's the pitch.
- 2:15:00Knuckleball hits, well, they went after that butterfly and just got a ticking piece of it.
- 2:15:05Ernie Banks, ticking away at a knuckleball that danced every old play.
- 2:15:12And now the fellow who is the owner of the most famous of them all, Hoyt Wilhelm of Baltimore, is warming up down the left field bullpen.
- 2:15:27Right hander looks like Elston up again for Chicago's Cubs.
- 2:15:31Way out the right field line, and the National League bullpen.
- 2:15:34No balls, just strikes. Pitch to Banks and there's a foul coming back out of play.
- 2:15:38Nothing to do.
- 2:15:44Jack just points out on the bench that Ferris, the only one left for the American League, accepting two pitchers.
- 2:15:50One of Wilhelm warming up right now.
- 2:15:54The other's got to be Billy Pierce of Chicago.
- 2:15:58Oh, nobody can say Stengel didn't use his stand.
- 2:16:04No balls, just strikes.
- 2:16:08There's a nut where this lollipop just went up and batted it down like it's water fly, just trying to keep it in the park.
- 2:16:15You see, of course, the great argument about whether pitchers can make the ball curve and what have you.
- 2:16:19They never, ever tried to just prove it or prove it when they had the knuckleball working.
- 2:16:23Here's the one-two pitch. Banks strikes out on it.
- 2:16:28Now that is the ninth strikeout against the National League.
- 2:16:32Coupled with the American League's eighth at 17 strikeouts, too shy of the All-Star record for strikeouts by two clubs.
- 2:16:40The nut was good in a 4-10 inning ball game.
- 2:16:44Here is Orlando Cepeda. Hennies 0-3. Popped the short, hit into a double play, and popped up the short.
- 2:16:52The infield now retreats for the American League, milestone MacDougall-Foxton power.
- 2:16:58Banks called it Cepeda. Cepeda hits the longest home run ever seen here at Ford Field,
- 2:17:03to the opposite field when he struck one a distance of 445 feet into right center.
- 2:17:09No one has ever come near that.
- 2:17:12No balls, one strike to Orlando.
- 2:17:14Woodin has it third, his triple, knocked in the lead run, Henry Aaron, here on the National League's eighth inning.
- 2:17:19Plops it up on the first base side. Dick Howard comes up. The ball is now dripped foul.
- 2:17:24He goes over near the railing, leans over, and makes the catch for the out.
- 2:17:28So all the innings showed three runs, three hits, no errors, and one left.
- 2:17:34And at the end of eight innings of play, it's the National League Five and the American League Four.
- 2:17:40Look sharp, be sharp, be sharp now is the mission. How will you make it for me?
- 2:17:49How will you make it for me? You better ask.
- 2:17:53You need to make sure you've got enough enough.
- 2:17:57Cause the more and I'll be made to make it even by time.
- 2:18:02How will you make it for me?
- 2:18:05You better ask.
- 2:18:10All right, ready to go now to the top of the night.
- 2:18:15We're attempting to determine where and how the winning and losing pitch is going to be set up.
- 2:18:22And it very likely will be as Elston now comes in.
- 2:18:26In relief of John Antonelli.
- 2:18:29It does appear that this will be an official score, it's not a problem.
- 2:18:33Ken Boyer goes to third base for the National League.
- 2:18:37And Don Elston, the fine right-hander and release pitcher, hitting, pitching at 225.
- 2:18:44In other words, the in-run average is 2.25.
- 2:18:47One five and lost one, that's one five in a row in relief for the Chicago Cubs.
- 2:18:52He faces Malzone, a bunt that flanked Malzone.
- 2:18:56He's over one back in the eighth inning, there's a high curve ball on.
- 2:19:10One ball and no strike.
- 2:19:12Elston's delivery, swing and a miss by Malzone, one and one.
- 2:19:15We're down now to the point where this could be the final inning.
- 2:19:19In a five-four ball game, John Antonelli went one third of an inning.
- 2:19:25No run, no hit, didn't strike out, anybody did walk one.
- 2:19:32Elston gets another fastball in there past the power of Malzone, right up in his letters,
- 2:19:37but he had something on it, one and two as he swung inside.
- 2:19:47Good pitcher of the afternoon for the National League All-Stars.
- 2:19:50Don Elston, top half of the ninth, the National League leading five-four.
- 2:19:54The right-hander works, foul back by Malzone.
- 2:19:58Malzone, the right-hand batter, has a very wonderful target at which to swing in Boston,
- 2:20:03the short left field porch as they call it.
- 2:20:05He has 10 homers, 39 RBI's.
- 2:20:08He's a very fine ball player.
- 2:20:14Elston working to Malzone in the ninth inning for the American League.
- 2:20:18They're down and run.
- 2:20:19The American League has won the last two All-Star Classics.
- 2:20:22Here's the one-two pitch up inside to two.
- 2:20:28Manny Minosso is on deck.
- 2:20:37Seventeen strikeouts in the ballgame, a couple of chives in record
- 2:20:42for a total strikeout by two clubs in the All-Star Classics.
- 2:20:46There's a pump up on the first base side and Macy Minosso in the stand and does.
- 2:20:53Two-two.
- 2:20:59One could not have asked for a more brilliant, beautiful, sunshiny afternoon.
- 2:21:04And the day presented the baseball fans of Pittsburgh and the fans of the nation
- 2:21:11for the 26th annual All-Star Classic.
- 2:21:14Two-two pitch.
- 2:21:16There's a high top, hit up on short, bank wanted.
- 2:21:18Shortstop bank waiting.
- 2:21:20Four-mile zone top.
- 2:21:22Gets up two steps to the left, then one down.
- 2:21:25Now Manny Minosso, who is all for four, he plowed the center, went out to second,
- 2:21:29struck out and fouled out.
- 2:21:32He's the left fielder today for the Cleveland Indians playing here in the American League All-Star.
- 2:21:38Wally Moon is in left field.
- 2:21:39Willie Mays is in center.
- 2:21:40Henry Aaron is right.
- 2:21:41They've not made a change there.
- 2:21:42The National League has not made anywhere near the changes.
- 2:21:45The American League has curbs.
- 2:21:48One going to miss by Minosso, try to tie it up.
- 2:21:51Moyer's in third.
- 2:21:52Banks is short.
- 2:21:53Mazurowski at second.
- 2:21:55Capeted first.
- 2:21:56Crandall has been doing the catching all the way.
- 2:21:59And the pitcher is Don Elson, the great relief artist of the Chicago Cubs.
- 2:22:05Hard curveball outside and low.
- 2:22:07One ball, one strut.
- 2:22:09One ball and one strut.
- 2:22:21Low outside, football too, good one.
- 2:22:36This game, a very explosive one.
- 2:22:39Jack described in the first four and a half, just a home run or no count, a one-one,
- 2:22:43and then everything burst loose in the seventh and eighth inning.
- 2:22:46Two balls, one strike, and sucking away.
- 2:22:49Minosso fouls it off way up over our heads to the right.
- 2:22:52She did.
- 2:22:55As an example in the short side at one and one, the National League in the seventh inning made it three to one their way.
- 2:23:02In the eighth inning, the American League came back with three runs to take the lead four to three.
- 2:23:06It's an action league for two in the eighth and it's five-four.
- 2:23:09There's a strikeout swinging on Minosso, two down, and we're within one of tying a record on strikeouts.
- 2:23:15Eighteen now, nineteen is the record, and that was a fourteen inning ball game.
- 2:23:24That's the ninth strikeout, first for Don Elson.
- 2:23:30And here's Nellie Fox, who struck out, fouled out the third, rolled out the second, and singled up the middle in the eighth and scored
- 2:23:36one of the three runs when the American League took the lead on a short live basis four to three,
- 2:23:42only to surrender it by four as the National League came back with eight or two runs in the eighth.
- 2:23:47Nellie Fox, check swings on the hard curve inside below the knees ball on.
- 2:23:52Nellie, left hand batter.
- 2:24:03Don Elson, fifth pitcher of the afternoon, what's two down, none on? What's going on, Nellie Fox?
- 2:24:08There's a liner out the right field line hooking, and it is up in the stands at the foul wall.
- 2:24:13And Nellie Fox didn't miss it by much, a tying it up.
- 2:24:25Well, Nellie Fox with two homers and forty-one RBI's just shared the daylight down the National League fans
- 2:24:34with a two out, long blast to right, three hundred feet right down the line, he took a shot at it, and it hooked foul.
- 2:24:41One ball, one strike, Don Elson again into the windup.
- 2:24:45There's a looper to left for the basehead, he went to the outstretched field on a curve ball,
- 2:24:49Wally Moon comes up with it, they stay alive, these American Leaguers.
- 2:24:56That'll bring up Harvey Keene, who walked in the eighth and scored a run.
- 2:25:01I remember Harvey Keene in front of Adler, he's hitting it three fifty-six.
- 2:25:07Two down, and now, a lot of action again.
- 2:25:15Warren Spahn is up for the Milwaukee Braves, there's the pitch, inside a ball, the Harvey Keene.
- 2:25:25And Gene Conley of Philadelphia is also up.
- 2:25:29One ball and no strikes, the pitch.
- 2:25:32The ball bounces off to the left, there goes the tying run into second and Nellie Fox,
- 2:25:37and he bluffs the throw to third, there's a skipping throw by Crandall on down to Foyer to hold the runner there,
- 2:25:42and it's a wild pitch charged to Don Elson.
- 2:25:50Well, that little statement, the game is never over until the final round against the Rear Adductor,
- 2:25:55a little head as far as the National Leaguers are concerned.
- 2:26:00Now the tying run in Nellie Fox has been a wild pitch to second base,
- 2:26:05and there's a pretty fair man up there with a stick in the name of Harvey Keene at three fifty-six
- 2:26:10for the Detroit Tigers.
- 2:26:17Pitch from Elson, a long drive to left field, it is curving, it is out of here somehow.
- 2:26:23Well, I want to tell you Harvey Keene laid the wood to that one.
- 2:26:38He only has three homers this year, thirty-three Harvey has,
- 2:26:41but he just about puts the American League in his game of inches back into the lead.
- 2:26:47Two balls and a strike now, Nellie Fox on second base.
- 2:26:50The score, five-four, National League top of the night.
- 2:26:53The pitch, foul back.
- 2:26:55Elson's playing a good, moving pitch that time,
- 2:26:57and it's a little just enough that he found it off to the right, two-two.
- 2:27:13Two balls and two strikes.
- 2:27:17Well, let's see now, if Elson's able to go to his favorite outpitch on a two-two delivery,
- 2:27:22a curve ball that won't quit.
- 2:27:26Here's the look, the pitch, there's the curve.
- 2:27:29Ooh, Elson says he thought he had it so did the catcher,
- 2:27:32and it's called ball three, three and two.
- 2:27:39Three balls and two strikes.
- 2:27:42Elson went right to his knee, supplication.
- 2:27:46Three balls and two strikes now to Harvey Keane with Nellie Fox on second base,
- 2:27:53two out in the night.
- 2:27:55The look, the pitch, pop it up foul off the first-rate side,
- 2:27:59Randall Ann Boyer, Boyer stays with it, that's it.
- 2:28:03The National League beats the American League all-star.
- 2:28:07The final score is the National League five runs on nine hits and one error,
- 2:28:11the American League four runs on eight hits and no errors.
- 2:28:15In a moment, we'll review the highlights of the ballgame for you.
- 2:28:19Well, it's happened, ladies.
- 2:28:21They've put an end to the messiest part of a home permanent.
- 2:28:24Now, new No-Mix Tony has a neutralizer that's actually easy to use.
- 2:28:29The first neutralizer becomes already mixed.
- 2:28:32No more watery neutralizing like old-fashioned permanents.
- 2:28:36No more fixing and mixing.
- 2:28:38No more drenching and dripping.
- 2:28:40Never again.
- 2:28:41With new No-Mix Tony, there's no powder.
- 2:28:44No water to mix.
- 2:28:46Tony's No-Mix neutralizer comes remixed and concentrated in a handy little plastic bottle.
- 2:28:52Just nip off the tip and squeeze.
- 2:28:54What a creamy neutralizer.
- 2:28:56It's full of rich conditioning liquids that give you Tony's famous hidden body.
- 2:29:01And that's what holds any hairstyle like no other permanent can.
- 2:29:05Get new No-Mix Tony.
- 2:29:07Put hidden body into your hair this new easy way.
- 2:29:11It's the first permanent with neutralizer already mixed.
- 2:29:15New No-Mix Tony.
- 2:29:20Well, ladies and gentlemen, this is Jack Brickhotts back in the Moosehound,
- 2:29:23Morton Field, and Pittsburgh.
- 2:29:24And here's a little brief review of what went on this afternoon out here.
- 2:29:27And one of the most thrilling, one of the most exciting,
- 2:29:29and one of the most entertaining of all the All-Star games
- 2:29:32is the National League drew up closer to the American League win total in this series.
- 2:29:37With the 26th game, found the National League winning their number 11,
- 2:29:40the American League has 115.
- 2:29:43Here are the totals for the winning National Leaguers, five runs, nine hits, and one error.
- 2:29:47The winning pitcher was Johnny Antonelli.
- 2:29:50They used Drysdale for Deft Base Antonelli and Don Elston of that order.
- 2:29:55And the American League had four runs on eight hits and no evers.
- 2:29:59And the American League used Wynn, Zirin, Bunning, Ford, and Daly.
- 2:30:05They really used plenty.
- 2:30:06As a matter of fact, Casey Sangles used 22 men in this ball game.
- 2:30:09And at one stage of the game, the only ones left down there were Daly and Pearson, the full fence,
- 2:30:14and Yogi Vera and Casey himself on the bench.
- 2:30:17It must have been an interesting conversation between Yogi and Casey Sangles, two great grammarians,
- 2:30:24one of whom has built up a vocabulary by reading lots of comic books,
- 2:30:28and the other who has been described as a man who talks like a fellow coming out of the anesthetic.
- 2:30:34Anyway, it was one of the most interesting baseball games we've ever seen,
- 2:30:37and we've been lucky enough to have seen most of these All-Star contests, as has Bob.
- 2:30:41The official enough gate count was 34,763.
- 2:30:46The tickets sold were 35,277, which means that a few people who bought tickets didn't make it to the ballpark today.
- 2:30:52We're not going to go over the whole game for you,
- 2:30:54but we do want to point out that you can find all sorts of heroes and very few goats in this ball game today.
- 2:31:00Certainly one of the standout performances came a couple of hours ago,
- 2:31:04and a little better when at the opening of this particular performance here in Pittsburgh,
- 2:31:09Don Drysdale retired the first nine men he faced, struck out four, walked nobody,
- 2:31:14was followed by Berta, who struck out a couple, Faye struck out a couple, and Denali,
- 2:31:18and Ford were the only pitchers who did not strike out somebody today.
- 2:31:22Early wind struck out three, but he gave up that home run ball, so that's right there,
- 2:31:26just about white-dotted chance of being the winning pitcher two years in a row.
- 2:31:30He was the winner last year.
- 2:31:31Ryan Durin struck out four while walking only one, and Bunning got a strike out,
- 2:31:35and Daley got a strike out in his performance at the end of the game.
- 2:31:37All told, there were nine strikeouts on each side, a total of 18 and one short on the record for two teams.
- 2:31:43The record for one team is a dozen.
- 2:31:45Again, our congratulations to everybody, and of course, just the eighth inning alone was worth the price of admission
- 2:31:50as the American Leaguers came up with three big runs, batted around to do it,
- 2:31:55and it looked like they had finally come from behind in typical American League style,
- 2:31:58which they've done many times before to win the ball game,
- 2:32:01but the National League had it when they had to have it in their half of the eighth inning,
- 2:32:04and with base hits by Boyer, a great clutch bunt by Nick Rood, a very significant bunt,
- 2:32:12shutting up a chance for Hank Aaron to belt one, and then Willie May's triple,
- 2:32:16which brought in Aaron with what turned out to be the winning run,
- 2:32:19and there you had a very, very explosive eighth inning.
- 2:32:22Well, we certainly hope you've enjoyed today's game,
- 2:32:25one of the many events brought to you on the Gillette Cavalcade of sports.
- 2:32:28We have a World's Wilderweight title strap on 10th for you Friday night,
- 2:32:32July the 10th when Don Shorten defends his crown against Dennis Boyer in a 15-rounder.
- 2:32:37So plan to be with us via radio or television and enjoy all the excitement.
- 2:32:41Our thanks to our NBC engineer, Harry Alexander.
- 2:32:44This broadcast was produced by NBC Sports editor Paul Jonas,
- 2:32:48and this is Jack Brickhouse saying, along with Bob Prince,
- 2:32:51smooth sailing, smooth shaving, and good afternoon for your host, the Gillette Safety Razor Company.
