Sam: Hey there, and welcome back to 7 Minute Books. I'm Sam, and today we're talking about a book that really got under my skin, Out of Office by Charlie Warzel and Anne Helen Petersen. Sophie, you read this one too, and I have to ask, did it make you as uncomfortable as it made me?
• 0:20
Sophie: Oh, completely. And I think that's the point. It's not a feel-good book about working from home. It's a diagnosis of why the modern workplace is so broken, and the pandemic just ripped the bandage off.
• 0:33
Sam: Right, and the core problem they name is something called workism. It's this idea that work isn't just a job, it's your identity, your community, your source of moral worth. Your productivity becomes your virtue.
• 0:48
Sophie: Exactly. And they tie that to what they call the cult of the office. It's not just about the building, it's about this performance of busyness. You have to be seen at your desk, looking busy, even if you're not actually getting anything done.
• 1:03
Sam: Yeah, that part hit me hard. I used to do that, just stay late because everyone else did, even if I was just scrolling my phone. It was about being seen, not about doing good work.
• 1:14
Sophie: And then the pandemic hits, and suddenly there's no office to perform in. But instead of breaking the workism spell, it just followed us home. The boundaries between work and life just vanished.
• 1:28
Sam: They have this phrase for it, being always on, always available, and always anxious. And honestly, that's exactly what it felt like. I was checking emails at midnight, feeling guilty if I wasn't.
• 1:41
Sophie: Right. And the book makes this great point that the whole debate between going back to the office versus staying remote is a trap. Both sides are asking the wrong question. It's not about where we work, it's about how and why we work.
• 1:56
Sam: Okay, so what's the alternative? They're not just saying remote work is bad, they're offering a blueprint. What are the pillars again?
• 2:04
Sophie: There are four of them. Flexibility, culture, place, and and community. And they're all interconnected.
• 2:11
Sam: Let's start with flexibility, because I feel like that word gets thrown around a lot.
• 2:16
Sophie: Oh, totally. But the book argues that true flexibility isn't just choosing your start time. It's about having control over your time. It means shifting from a culture of hours to a culture of outcomes. We should ask, did you get the work done, not did you sit at your desk for eight hours?
• 2:34
Sam: That requires a ton of trust, though. And the book says that managers who don't trust their employees are actually the source of a lot of inefficiency.
• 2:43
Sophie: Exactly. When you treat people like responsible adults, they're more likely to act like them. And flexibility also means embracing asynchronous communication. Not everything needs to be a real-time meeting.
• 2:56
Sam: So much time is wasted in meetings that could just be an email. I'm guilty of scheduling meetings just to show I'm on top of things.
• 3:04
Sophie: And that's part of the old culture, right? Which brings us to the second pillar. Real culture isn't about ping-pong tables and free snacks. That's just a veneer. It's about shared values and psychological safety. People need to feel safe to speak up and make mistakes.
• 3:22
Sam: And that kind of culture can't be imposed from the top. It has to be co-created. Leaders need to become more like facilitators and coaches instead of command and control types.
• 3:34
Sophie: Yes. And then there's place. The book challenges the idea that it's just home versus office. We need a third space. For a lot of people, the home was never meant to be a full-time office. It's a place for rest and family.
• 3:49
Sam: So they're talking about coworking spaces or local offices that are separate from home, so you can actually have a clean break at the end of the day. And that also has big implications for our cities, right? It could bring life back to local communities.
• 4:05
Sophie: Yeah, the office-centric model has hollowed out so many towns. People commute to some distant campus and then come home to a place where they don't know their neighbors. A more distributed model could change that.
• 4:18
Sam: And that leads to the fourth pillar, community. The book says the workplace has become a substitute for real community. We've outsourced our social lives and even our friendships to our employers. That's so unhealthy.
• 4:32
Sophie: It is. And the pandemic showed us how fragile that is. When we stopped going to the office, a lot of people realized they had no other community to fall back on. So the solution is to invest in community outside of work, to get to know your neighbors, to find purpose beyond your job title.
• 4:51
Sam: And the book is also honest about the challenges. It's not a utopian vision. Managers who built their careers on the old model are going to struggle. And not everyone has the same power to negotiate for flexibility. A software engineer has way more leverage than a delivery driver.
• 5:09
Sophie: Right, that's a crucial point. The benefits of remote work haven't been distributed equally, and any just future of work has to address that. They even bring up the question of compensation. If we move to outcomes over hours, how do we pay people?
• 5:26
Sam: They suggest moving away from hourly wages toward salaries or profit-sharing, and paying people for the value they create, not just the time they put in.
• 5:36
Sophie: And that includes recognizing that caregiving and rest are not distractions from work, but essential parts of a healthy society. It all comes back to power, honestly. Who gets to control your time and your attention?
• 5:50
Sam: And the old model gave all that power to the employer. The new model has to give it back to the worker. Because a burned out, disengaged workforce isn't productive. A workforce that has control over its time and a life outside of work is going to be way more creative and loyal.
• 6:09
Sophie: So what's your big takeaway, Sam?
• 6:11
Sam: I think for me, it's that we have to stop asking where we work and start asking why we work. The pandemic showed us that another way is possible, but it's not automatic. It takes conscious effort and hard conversations. And we have to be willing to let go of the old ways of thinking.
• 6:30
Sophie: Yeah. And if you want to explore more of these ideas, the whole library is over at 7minutebooks.com/app, with over 6,000 fiction and nonfiction titles you can read or listen to in any language. It's just $2.99 a month, $9.99 a year, or $19.99 for lifetime access.
• 6:54
Sophie: Ultimately, this book is a call to imagine a world where work is a part of life, not the whole of it. And that's a future worth fighting for. We'll see you in the next one.
