- 0:45SPEAKER_04: I am your host, Steven Rodriguez, my co-host Tristan McGonigal.
- 0:48SPEAKER_04: Tristan, what's up, buddy?
- 0:49SPEAKER_04: It's been a while, Steven.
- 0:51SPEAKER_04: Hasn't it, sir?
- 0:52SPEAKER_04: It's been a little bit.
- 0:54SPEAKER_04: It's been fun.
- 0:54SPEAKER_04: We've been enjoying our time off.
- 0:56SPEAKER_04: Uh, you know, it's summer.
- 0:58SPEAKER_04: We're uh we're hanging out.
- 1:00SPEAKER_04: And Stephen buried the last episode in his backyard.
- 1:03SPEAKER_02: I don't know what you're talking about.
- 1:05SPEAKER_02: Just put it out and put it to pasture.
- 1:08SPEAKER_02: It went on a farm upstate.
- 1:10SPEAKER_02: Prove it right now.
- 1:12SPEAKER_04: You can't.
- 1:13SPEAKER_04: Can't do it.
- 1:14SPEAKER_04: Podcast doesn't exist as far as everybody is concerned.
- 1:17SPEAKER_04: It was too beefy.
- 1:18SPEAKER_04: It was too much.
- 1:20SPEAKER_04: It was too much of a good thing, I guess.
- 1:21SPEAKER_04: It was too eh, it was too long.
- 1:24SPEAKER_04: I couldn't physically upload it, and now it's all in the past.
- 1:29SPEAKER_04: None of it would make sense.
- 1:30SPEAKER_02: Well, well, it's behind us.
- 1:32SPEAKER_02: Here we are now.
- 1:33SPEAKER_02: Um, you're recording our first pre-season, like true first preseason episode.
- 1:38SPEAKER_02: Like we are there.
- 1:39SPEAKER_02: It's we're a month before August.
- 1:41SPEAKER_02: Happy, happy July, happy belated fourth to all those Americans out there.
- 1:45SPEAKER_02: Um so if you're a Canadian or or anybody else, how about you uh, you know, you eat one right now?
- 1:51SPEAKER_02: There you go.
- 1:52SPEAKER_02: Just calling out Canada like that.
- 1:53SPEAKER_02: No other country, just calling out Canada.
- 1:56SPEAKER_02: A sustenance being consumed.
- 1:58SPEAKER_02: And um, but yeah, uh it's it's great to be back, man.
- 2:02SPEAKER_02: I had that long vacation, but here I am.
- 2:04SPEAKER_02: Um, I don't know about you, but like after a long vacation, it's always it's always really nice to be home.
- 2:08SPEAKER_02: I mean, it's just it's you know, you're out there, you know, going, going, going hard, trying to wield it up, and it's just good to get back and take it slow and get on the microphone.
- 2:17SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you know, just back back in the studio, talking some quarterbacks today.
- 2:22SPEAKER_04: Um, it's good times.
- 2:23SPEAKER_04: It's good times.
- 2:24SPEAKER_04: We're we're we're this is like the point in the off season where you're really looking forward to football because absolutely everything college sports is over.
- 2:32SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, it's it's the time where we just recently added four new schools um officially to the Big 12.
- 2:39SPEAKER_07: A week in.
- 2:40SPEAKER_04: We're just looking forward to football, man.
- 2:42SPEAKER_04: It's the first it's 55 days away at this point at of recording.
- 2:46SPEAKER_04: And uh, and we're ready to talk about what is possibly one of our better groups on this Texas Tech football team going into next into next year.
- 2:54SPEAKER_02: And I'm not gonna lie, within the week here, these these four newbies have been pretty mouthy.
- 2:58SPEAKER_02: Maybe they're on Twitter.
- 2:58SPEAKER_02: They're uh they're they're on one.
- 3:00SPEAKER_02: I mean, except for Houston.
- 3:01SPEAKER_02: I mean, they're they're never talking about anything ever, but um well, yeah, Houston didn't have any fans.
- 3:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so a they're really kind of but everyone else is kind of getting mouthy.
- 3:08SPEAKER_02: Um, especially uh, you know, uh central central Florida fans.
- 3:12SPEAKER_04: We knew that coming in with the University of Central Florida that they were gonna be uh a little a little cocky, a little talkative.
- 3:19SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, uh claimed a national championship in 2017, um, didn't actually win a national championship in 2017.
- 3:27SPEAKER_04: And uh, you know, hey, it's all it's all Stadium Wall.
- 3:30SPEAKER_02: I mean it's there that that makes it it counts.
- 3:32SPEAKER_02: If it's I was for that though.
- 3:34SPEAKER_04: At the time, I was very much for it.
- 3:36SPEAKER_04: I was like, yeah, talk your talk your shit, UCF.
- 3:40SPEAKER_04: But now that they're in the conference and we can make fun of them because they're now one of us.
- 3:44SPEAKER_04: They're ours, yeah.
- 3:45SPEAKER_04: You know, now it's slame and stupid.
- 3:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Central Florida University is ours.
- 3:49SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 3:49SPEAKER_02: Um, and and say same with the the the Cincinnati Bearcats, they're also out there having one.
- 3:54SPEAKER_02: So uh, but welcome, welcome in.
- 3:56SPEAKER_02: I mean, I'm I'm happy they're here.
- 3:58SPEAKER_02: You know, it's gonna be a fun ride, and I think we'll talk a little bit more about them later.
- 4:01SPEAKER_02: Um, so uh I know I I know this is a lot of small talk, but before we kick this uh thing off, what do you what are you sipping on right now?
- 4:07SPEAKER_04: Sipping on a little uh a beat a little strawberry lager.
- 4:11SPEAKER_04: It's the last remnants of my beer fridge uh after this past Friday.
- 4:16SPEAKER_04: Um, so I'm very you know, I don't have a lot left.
- 4:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I'm glad I could help you, but put in the damage there uh in in blank Baton Rouge, insert any adjective you'd like.
- 4:27SPEAKER_02: Um and um I'm drinking, dude, I'm drinking, you know what I'm saying?
- 4:32SPEAKER_02: I'm drinking mighty swell right now.
- 4:33SPEAKER_02: Do you know why?
- 4:34SPEAKER_02: Because it's been sitting, it's been sitting in my fridge for at least two years.
- 4:37SPEAKER_02: Nice and I got tired of seeing it in there.
- 4:39SPEAKER_02: Like I have good beer in there right now, but I'm like, I am sick and it like moved with us.
- 4:44SPEAKER_02: I'm I can't take it anymore.
- 4:47SPEAKER_02: I can't, I just because you know my wife used to be obsessed with these, but my wife goes through these um phases where she will not touch something when she's done with it.
- 4:54SPEAKER_02: It's oh yeah, we she will never look at it again.
- 4:57SPEAKER_02: And that happened to be Mighty Spells at a certain point now.
- 5:00SPEAKER_02: I'm just doing my duty to finally get rid of them.
- 5:02SPEAKER_02: So what's what's the flavor?
- 5:03SPEAKER_02: It's blackberry, so it's good.
- 5:05SPEAKER_02: It's it's a win.
- 5:06SPEAKER_04: Two-year-old blackberry, two-year-old blackberry, so it's disaged.
- 5:10SPEAKER_04: I mean, just aged like wine.
- 5:12SPEAKER_02: Like wine.
- 5:14SPEAKER_02: I guess whiskey doesn't age much of the bottle.
- 5:16SPEAKER_02: That's stupid.
- 5:17SPEAKER_02: Yours was better.
- 5:18SPEAKER_04: Thank you.
- 5:18SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no, I know.
- 5:20SPEAKER_04: I know I know my drinks.
- 5:22SPEAKER_04: Um mighty swell.
- 5:24SPEAKER_04: Congrats on finally getting that out of your fridge.
- 5:26SPEAKER_04: Very crazy.
- 5:27SPEAKER_02: Thank you, thank you.
- 5:27SPEAKER_02: Appreciate that.
- 5:28SPEAKER_02: Um, should we start talking about quarterbacks?
- 5:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah, let's go let's go ahead and get into it.
- 5:32SPEAKER_02: People are like hitting that password 15 second button.
- 5:35SPEAKER_04: Yeah, they're like, get get these guys, stop talking.
- 5:37SPEAKER_04: Let's I want to hear about Tyler Shuck and Barry Morton.
- 5:40SPEAKER_04: And Jake Strong.
- 5:41SPEAKER_04: And yeah, no, we got who else?
- 5:43SPEAKER_02: Oh, hold on.
- 5:44SPEAKER_04: Come on, Jaden.
- 5:45SPEAKER_02: Jaden Morris and Will Burns.
- 5:46SPEAKER_04: Will Burns, goat, future goat.
- 5:49SPEAKER_04: Um I think we start with Shuck here.
- 5:51SPEAKER_04: And so what we're doing here with the position groups is um I do I did a little research, uh, going back, watched some past games.
- 5:59SPEAKER_04: I even went back to Shuck's Oregon days, kind of watched uh some of those, and uh wanted to just really get the narrative because I think obviously us as Texas Tech fans, we didn't watch Tyler Shuck in Oregon.
- 6:11SPEAKER_04: Um, so there was certain narratives coming from that fan base, and they're always negative when a guy transfers.
- 6:18SPEAKER_04: Like it's just automatically once a player that was on your team puts his name in the portal, you start looking at everything he did bad, and that becomes the narrative.
- 6:27SPEAKER_04: Um so I want to preface this by just kind of giving a little background, some stats jumping out about Tyler Shuck, ages, eligibility years, all that good stuff.
- 6:39SPEAKER_04: So obviously, Tyler Shuck, super senior, um, 23 years old from Chandler, Arizona, six foot five, two thirty.
- 6:48SPEAKER_04: Now, I'm not sure if that weight is completely accurate.
- 6:52SPEAKER_04: I know he has put on some significant weight uh going into this year, kind of bulking up a little bit, making him a little stronger to take some more hits.
- 6:59SPEAKER_04: Um, and he's got exactly one year of eligibility left.
- 7:04SPEAKER_02: Can you um can you rewind that like uh like a UT writing about quinours?
- 7:08SPEAKER_02: UT writer by quinoas.
- 7:10SPEAKER_02: Please, please rephrase that.
- 7:12SPEAKER_04: Tyler Shuck is shredded this offseason.
- 7:16SPEAKER_04: Um nobody could beat him in a fight.
- 7:19SPEAKER_04: Six packs abs.
- 7:20SPEAKER_04: Talk about his abs.
- 7:21SPEAKER_04: Six-pack abs.
- 7:22SPEAKER_04: He beats anybody in arm wrestling.
- 7:24SPEAKER_04: Um, it's just insane how big and how yoked this guy is this offseason.
- 7:30SPEAKER_04: Thank you.
- 7:31SPEAKER_04: But now it's starting to make more sense in my head.
- 7:33SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 7:34SPEAKER_04: You know, you always gotta play it up a little bit.
- 7:36SPEAKER_04: Um uh like I mentioned, began the career at Oregon, backed up Justin Herbert as a true freshman in the 2019 season.
- 7:44SPEAKER_04: Uh 2020 comes around.
- 7:45SPEAKER_04: There was something called COVID that came around.
- 7:48SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, kind of screwed up everything there for a bit, including football in 2020.
- 7:55SPEAKER_04: Uh the Pac-12, of course, started even later than the rest of college football.
- 8:00SPEAKER_04: When we were all ready to play football, Pac-12 still wanted to be like, no, let's hold on there for a second, and uh eventually decided to, you know, get together and realize that even without fans, this sport is worth playing in 2020.
- 8:14SPEAKER_04: Um fun for that.
- 8:15SPEAKER_02: That's pretty that's pretty default state for them, though, over there in the pack.
- 8:18SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 8:19SPEAKER_04: It was they have beaches, even.
- 8:21SPEAKER_04: I know they do have beaches, they do have beaches.
- 8:23SPEAKER_04: I forgot.
- 8:24SPEAKER_04: Um, yeah, uh a part of the Pac-12 taking so long to start that year was the reason we got Colin Schooler, by the way.
- 8:32SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, Colin Schooler at Arizona before when the Pac-12 first initially announced that they weren't gonna play football, most of those players packed their bags and were like, okay, well, I'm transferring to actually play football.
- 8:44SPEAKER_04: And then the Pac-12 decided to get their shit together a little bit.
- 8:47SPEAKER_04: Um, so incoming 2020, that's I just need to preface this because 2020 was a messed up year for everybody.
- 8:53SPEAKER_04: I mean, you had no offseason, you had no summer workout program, you had no spring ball, you had none of that going into the year.
- 9:00SPEAKER_04: And so I don't really take the COVID year, you know, with I take it with a major grain of salt.
- 9:07SPEAKER_04: Um, Tyler Shuck won the starting job over Anthony Brown up and down year.
- 9:12SPEAKER_04: Uh Pac-12, like I mentioned, started later.
- 9:15SPEAKER_04: Um first five games of the year.
- 9:18SPEAKER_04: They only played, I think, seven games, Oregon did in 2020.
- 9:23SPEAKER_04: Um, first five games, they go three and two, but they still somehow make the Pac-12 championship uh against USC, who was undefeated at 5-0.
- 9:32SPEAKER_04: Um Shuck played good in those first five games.
- 9:35SPEAKER_04: I mean, he averaged 277.8 yards per game uh through the air, had an 11 to 4 touchdown interception ratio, you know, 63% completion percentage.
- 9:45SPEAKER_04: Um, he was good.
- 9:46SPEAKER_04: And there's this false narrative that he was just absolutely garbage at Oregon, and it just wasn't true.
- 9:52SPEAKER_02: Look, I mean, I I as as a as a hater myself, you know, whenever whenever a player transfers out, I am all on board with saying that guy was that guy didn't add anything.
- 10:02SPEAKER_02: He was he wasn't ready to cut it.
- 10:04SPEAKER_02: It's he's not here to play.
- 10:06SPEAKER_02: So I'm all on board with that, Duck Fans.
- 10:09SPEAKER_02: I I get it, I absolutely do.
- 10:11SPEAKER_02: Um, and I do like you, you know, kind of attacking the 2020 season.
- 10:15SPEAKER_02: I'm with you.
- 10:15SPEAKER_02: That sees that season does not count because TechStech did not do well, first of all.
- 10:20SPEAKER_04: And I was like a few seasons don't count if that's the criteria.
- 10:24SPEAKER_02: Well, I I love I love treating the 2020 season like it just does not count because the best part is because AM had a really good year for like the first time ever, and everyone's like, that year doesn't count.
- 10:34SPEAKER_02: Sorry, I love it on your Mickey Mouse ring.
- 10:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you're Mickey, exactly.
- 10:38SPEAKER_02: It's a Mickey Mouse season, so I love that.
- 10:41SPEAKER_02: And um, but yeah, no, dude, it's it's whenever I look at a guy like Tyler Shuck, and it's funny, it's also funny they brought up Colin School.
- 10:48SPEAKER_02: I didn't really put those pieces together about you know the COVID year and leave the pack and all that.
- 10:52SPEAKER_02: Um, but what was Matt Wells cooking?
- 10:54SPEAKER_02: You know, like what was what was he doing in that portal that got those two dudes, man?
- 11:00SPEAKER_03: Whatever that rap is is tremendous.
- 11:02SPEAKER_03: What was Matt Wells cooking?
- 11:04SPEAKER_03: He wasn't cooking a lot of wins, is what he was the wins weren't coming out of that pot there.
- 11:10SPEAKER_04: Uh he did.
- 11:12SPEAKER_04: That's the kind of funny part looking back at Matt Wells' tenure is how many good players he got from the transfer portal, and he just never coached them properly to you know get some dubs here for us.
- 11:24SPEAKER_04: But you know, Christian Merriweather, Fallen Schooler, a little guy named Tyree Wilson, um, you know, Tyler Shuck, that was all Matt Wells.
- 11:32SPEAKER_04: And uh gotta thank the guy for that.
- 11:35SPEAKER_04: Barron Morton, he I mean at a high school.
- 11:37SPEAKER_04: He did, he did.
- 11:38SPEAKER_04: Barron Morton, I mean, Joey retained him pretty much during that recruiting process, but yeah, I mean, I think Barron was always gonna come to tech.
- 11:45SPEAKER_04: But um, if he was gonna come during the Matt Wells years, yeah, he was gonna come to tech.
- 11:49SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, he'll he'll tech the whole time.
- 11:52SPEAKER_04: We'll get we'll get to Barron here in a second, but just to kind of finish off the the first year at Oregon for Tyler Shuck, um, they started using multiple quarterbacks starting in the Pac-12 championship game and then in the Fiesta Bowl against Iowa State.
- 12:05SPEAKER_04: Um, they did win the Pac-12 championship game, uh, beat USC, previously undefeated.
- 12:11SPEAKER_04: Uh, Shuck and Anthony Brown were both kind of playing, they played throughout the majority of that game, a lot with what Joey was doing last year using Donovan Smith.
- 12:19SPEAKER_04: Anthony Brown was kind of the same way.
- 12:21SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, running quarterback when you're in the red zone, he provides kind of that different um type of athlete and bigger body to potentially get in the end zone.
- 12:30SPEAKER_04: But um, I think a narrative that was going on was that Chuck was benched in the Fiesta Bowl game versus Iowa State.
- 12:37SPEAKER_04: Um, he wasn't really benched.
- 12:39SPEAKER_04: Uh Brown just played more in that game.
- 12:43SPEAKER_04: Uh, they were already playing two quarterbacks, no matter what.
- 12:46SPEAKER_04: Chuck even came in, he got one of the last reps in that game.
- 12:49SPEAKER_04: So it's not like he was like completely benched and then never played again, but um, they got Oregon got stomped by Iowa State.
- 12:56SPEAKER_04: Like they weren't gonna win that game, whether Shuck played the whole time or Brown played the whole time.
- 13:01SPEAKER_04: The defense was pitiful.
- 13:03SPEAKER_04: I watched that whole entire uh, you know, full highlight reel from that game, and uh the duck defense was awful, special teams was terrible.
- 13:10SPEAKER_04: They weren't gonna win that one.
- 13:11SPEAKER_04: So I don't know about this narrative of him being benched in the Fiesta Bowl, but he it wasn't great, but it wasn't like this horrible scene that he never should have been the starter in the first place or anything, you know.
- 13:24SPEAKER_02: So, I mean the ducks they go and they win in the they go and win the Pac-12 Mickey Mouse Championship.
- 13:29SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and then they go and play Iowa State in the Fiesta Bowl.
- 13:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, in an NY6 bowl, right?
- 13:34SPEAKER_02: And so where where's this whole Tyler Shuck sucks part?
- 13:39SPEAKER_02: Where's where's that where's that even compute?
- 13:40SPEAKER_02: Because most of the time people um connect uh a season record with the quarterback whenever he wasn't whether it's warranted or not.
- 13:48SPEAKER_04: He wasn't fantastic in the final two games of the regular season.
- 13:52SPEAKER_04: I think they lost both of them to like Oregon State and uh another team, Cal or something like that.
- 13:57SPEAKER_04: It was pretty bad.
- 13:58SPEAKER_04: Um, he wasn't great in those games, and he did play and start those games.
- 14:02SPEAKER_04: Uh, that's when they decided to switch to the double quarterback.
- 14:06SPEAKER_04: So, you know, I mean, I he didn't maintain the starting job, I guess, if if you can say that in a word, but it wasn't as brutal as people put it out to be.
- 14:15SPEAKER_02: Well, yeah.
- 14:15SPEAKER_02: I mean, now now looking back, since he's at our school, but it was just he was just mad underrated.
- 14:20SPEAKER_04: Yeah, that's what it is.
- 14:22SPEAKER_04: Just underrated.
- 14:23SPEAKER_04: Coach didn't do a good job.
- 14:25SPEAKER_04: Uh 2021 transfers to Texas Tech in the offseason under then coach Matt Wells and then offensive coordinator Sonny Cumbee.
- 14:35SPEAKER_04: Um, again, wins the starting quarterback job in the offseason over GOAT Henry Columbi and Donovan Smith.
- 14:42SPEAKER_04: Um, I know.
- 14:45SPEAKER_04: What a battle between those three guys.
- 14:47SPEAKER_04: A uh a true uh uh redshirt freshman Donovan Smith, Henry Columbi, and Tyler Shuck.
- 14:55SPEAKER_04: Utah State legends transition as head coach, yes, Henry Columbi.
- 15:00SPEAKER_04: You love to see it.
- 15:01SPEAKER_04: Um Shuck starts the first four games of the year before a season-ending collarbone break early in the UT game.
- 15:08SPEAKER_04: He started off 3-0 against Houston, SFA, and FIU.
- 15:13SPEAKER_04: Uh would be one of the two losses Houston suffered that whole season.
- 15:17SPEAKER_04: Other was to Cincinnati, who made the playoff in 2021.
- 15:21SPEAKER_04: So Houston was a good team, and that was a good win for Tyler Shuck.
- 15:24SPEAKER_04: Uh, not a good performance against SFA uh and the first half against Florida International, but he we did end up coming back and and smoking the rails off of FIU.
- 15:35SPEAKER_04: But um, you know, this whole season was just it it sucked.
- 15:40SPEAKER_04: It was injury ridden.
- 15:41SPEAKER_04: Tyler Shuck out the first half of the first Big 12 game.
- 15:46SPEAKER_04: You know, you what do you what do you say about 2021, Tyler Shuck?
- 15:50SPEAKER_02: These these are just memories I'm trying to scrub from my mind.
- 15:52SPEAKER_02: You know, it it talked about uh poor performances.
- 15:55SPEAKER_02: I mean, that was you and me at that Houston game.
- 15:57SPEAKER_02: That was a poor performance, I'm not gonna lie.
- 15:59SPEAKER_02: Uh in NRG Stadium.
- 16:02SPEAKER_02: Um, but uh again, it's just another season that's that was the season where Matt Wells was trying to save his life, wasn't it?
- 16:08SPEAKER_02: Because that was the same, oh yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 16:10SPEAKER_02: Because it's 2020.
- 16:11SPEAKER_04: That was when that was the season Matt Wells was fired mid year.
- 16:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's that's why that is why Tyler Shook started.
- 16:16SPEAKER_02: That's why he transferred to Texas Tech because Matt Wells was probably like cooking in his in his cooking, he was telling him you will start.
- 16:23SPEAKER_02: You will have you have this you have the starting job at this school.
- 16:26SPEAKER_02: So I you know, I'm really Sprite State.
- 16:29SPEAKER_02: I know it's a bit off topic, but like it's just kind of shocking that he hung around.
- 16:32SPEAKER_02: Um, but um, yeah, no, but all in all, it was actually a decent season.
- 16:36SPEAKER_02: Whenever I like, you know, I just said scrub it from my mind, it kind of got salvaged a little bit because uh, you know, whenever we whenever we got fired mid-year, um, that's that's where we we we we we clawed our life to the uh the Liberty Bowl.
- 16:50SPEAKER_02: So yeah, I mean that was that was basically winning the lottery for Texas Tech fans at the time.
- 16:54SPEAKER_02: I mean, it's it's kind of like looking back, whenever you look at the numbers, like but whenever you think whenever you go back emotionally, that was a big deal for us.
- 17:01SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no, it was it ended up being something uh something good, especially beating, you know, uh rest in peace to coach Mike Leach, but beating him in the uh and Mississippi State in the Liberty Bowl.
- 17:12SPEAKER_02: Well, it would be his last bowl game, too.
- 17:13SPEAKER_04: It would, yeah.
- 17:14SPEAKER_04: And um, you know, just getting Sonny Cumbie taken over, that was a whole fun time.
- 17:19SPEAKER_04: Him as the interim head coach, and um, we obviously had some stinkers put in there.
- 17:23SPEAKER_04: We had quarters.
- 17:23SPEAKER_04: Pump jack mentality, yeah.
- 17:25SPEAKER_04: Pump jack mentality bringing the whole thing.
- 17:27SPEAKER_04: Um, so you know, 2021, it sucked for Shuck because he got hurt, but I I think he showed some signs in those first few games and won games.
- 17:37SPEAKER_04: That's that's kind of the real narrative around Tyler Shuck, is that he wins games when he plays the whole time.
- 17:43SPEAKER_04: And now he may not jump out to you on the stat sheet, but he knows how to win games, and that's kind of the repeating narrative with him.
- 17:50SPEAKER_02: What's it like?
- 17:51SPEAKER_02: He's lost one game starting.
- 17:53SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I mean, he started so at Texas Tech, he started 2021.
- 17:57SPEAKER_04: He, I mean, I'm not gonna count the UT game because he got hurt in the first quarter.
- 18:01SPEAKER_04: So you think about that, that's three-no.
- 18:03SPEAKER_04: Um, last year he wins the first four games of the season.
- 18:07SPEAKER_04: He I'm not gonna count the Marie State game because again, he got hurt real early in that game.
- 18:12SPEAKER_04: So I I don't think he's he's undefeated technically in games that he starts and finishes.
- 18:18SPEAKER_04: Wow, okay, Texas Tech.
- 18:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so he's he's a winner, yeah.
- 18:20SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, definitely a winner.
- 18:22SPEAKER_04: Gets it done at Texas Tech.
- 18:24SPEAKER_04: He he's played, I'll get to 2022 here in a bit, but that's you can't argue with dubs.
- 18:30SPEAKER_02: No, you can't.
- 18:31SPEAKER_02: I mean, that's the ultimate goal here.
- 18:33SPEAKER_02: And um Tyler, I mean Tyler Shuck, it's funny, it's funny, like the most critical season he's looked at.
- 18:38SPEAKER_02: So whenever he was at Oregon, that was so was he a sophomore in that I mean uh a freshman or sophomore in that season?
- 18:44SPEAKER_04: Uh he was technically a sophomore because I think he actually I don't think he redshirted at Oregon.
- 18:48SPEAKER_04: Okay, um he was uh the legitimate backup for Justin Herbert in that 2019 year.
- 18:54SPEAKER_04: Okay, gotcha.
- 18:55SPEAKER_04: Um, and then yeah, and then won the starting job the next year.
- 18:58SPEAKER_02: All right, so we're we're really being really tough on a sophomore, got it.
- 19:00SPEAKER_02: Um so true.
- 19:04SPEAKER_04: He was a four-star recruit.
- 19:06SPEAKER_04: He obviously recruited Oregon, so he was highly touted.
- 19:09SPEAKER_04: But yeah, I mean, you know, sophomore year, Tyler Shuck wasn't the best version of Tyler Shuck, who would have thought.
- 19:16SPEAKER_02: And um, but yeah, dude, it's that putting stringing those two uh those few together, um, it's really not a rap shot shot rap she could be mad at because I know there's there's actually you know some controversy with tech fans, and there's actually a portion that aren't in love with the guy either right now, you know, and I it's probably just because he hasn't been able to play enough at the end of the day where we really talk about it, because you know, he's he's not really the guy you can always count on to see on the TV or return it on Saturday.
- 19:42SPEAKER_02: So I wonder if that's like the disconnect for tech fans.
- 19:45SPEAKER_02: I don't know because obviously you just kind of went through it, then the numbers do not lie whenever kind of assuming he does.
- 19:51SPEAKER_04: I think that was more of a narrative, and more fans thought that before the run last year to end the year.
- 19:57SPEAKER_04: You know, you go four-0, you you win the bowl game pretty big time against Ole Miss, you beat OU in that stretch.
- 20:03SPEAKER_04: I mean, it's it's I he won back a lot of fans because I think there was um, and I keep saying narrative, but there was a narrative around Tyler Shuck that he was kind of softer, uh, you know, couldn't, you know, he was injured, he couldn't take these hits, but he proved it.
- 20:20SPEAKER_04: And in those last four games of the year, he showed some dog in him that I think the fan base really just wanted out of him, that they couldn't fully buy in because they didn't see that.
- 20:30SPEAKER_04: And now that they've had a little more time with him, a few more games that he's played, um, more wins, you're just thinking, okay, I think I think the majority of the fan base is pretty in on Tyler Shuck at this point.
- 20:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no, yeah, agreed.
- 20:42SPEAKER_04: Yeah, so um, speaking of last year, let's talk about his 2022.
- 20:46SPEAKER_04: Wins uh wins the starting QB job in the offseason for the third consecutive time in his college career over Donovan Smith and Barron Morton, who we will get to in a bit.
- 20:55SPEAKER_04: Um, enters his collarbone in the first quarter of the first game against Murray State.
- 21:00SPEAKER_04: And we're just like really, literally, every year this is gonna happen from now on for the rest of time.
- 21:06SPEAKER_04: We're just gonna have our starting quarterback get hurt early in the season.
- 21:08SPEAKER_04: Um, misses nearly two months, played a couple snaps and then already just beat down from Baylor.
- 21:16SPEAKER_04: Um, goes in for the injured Baron Morton in the second half of the TCU game, plays well to start, but then has a very poor stretch in that TCU game.
- 21:26SPEAKER_04: Um side note, completely forgot how insanely good the tech defense played in the first three quarters of that game.
- 21:34SPEAKER_04: The they made Max Duggan's life absolute hell in that TCU game.
- 21:38SPEAKER_04: Just a side note that I noticed from watching that entire game over again.
- 21:42SPEAKER_02: Um, dude, we could we could totally just be a UT fan right now.
- 21:46SPEAKER_02: Had we had a healthy QB, TCU literally had to have a healthy team and score more points to beat us.
- 21:52SPEAKER_02: So that's that that's that's real yeah, grow up to grow up TCU.
- 21:58SPEAKER_04: Grow up TCU, we should have won.
- 22:02SPEAKER_04: Um proceeds to be named the starter after Morton goes down for the year with that ankle injury.
- 22:08SPEAKER_04: Um, Donovan Smith at this point is kind of already benched.
- 22:12SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, played pretty good in some games, played really bad in some other games.
- 22:16SPEAKER_04: Um, I think the entire quarterback situation was something they had to navigate the entire year through.
- 22:22SPEAKER_04: You're trying to make a bunch of different people happy while you're also trying to play the best guy and keep everybody involved.
- 22:28SPEAKER_04: And uh it bit us in the butt a couple times, but it also worked out towards the end of the year.
- 22:32SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, the way we used Donovan Smith uh in those third down situations or red zone situations, they kind of figured it out in the last couple games of the year and it benefited us a little bit.
- 22:42SPEAKER_04: Um, I always hate going multiple QB, but you know, it's not my choice.
- 22:47SPEAKER_02: Was that the best quarterback by committee or whatever word you want to use you've ever seen?
- 22:52SPEAKER_04: Uh I don't know if it's not QB's offense.
- 22:55SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 22:56SPEAKER_04: It's probably not the best I've ever seen.
- 22:57SPEAKER_04: I think there was actually a team that made a run at the national championship doing something like that a few years ago.
- 23:02SPEAKER_04: I can't remember off the top of my head, but um I it's definitely not the best I've ever seen, but it's it's it was notable at the end of the year.
- 23:09SPEAKER_04: So, you know, they figured it out.
- 23:11SPEAKER_04: I think Kid Lee got a got a pretty good handle on a disastrous, not disastrous QB situation, but just a injury riddle one.
- 23:18SPEAKER_02: I mean, I I like I like that you put it that way, you know, trying to keep a lot of people happy.
- 23:21SPEAKER_02: And I think I think they did a really good job with it too.
- 23:23SPEAKER_02: Um, uh it's those were that was a lot of personnel.
- 23:26SPEAKER_02: You had a lot of talent in that room, like rolling good players.
- 23:28SPEAKER_02: And to to keep your two best quarterbacks at the end of the season was really awesome.
- 23:32SPEAKER_02: So that's that's a a good move, I would say, in the in the coaching world.
- 23:37SPEAKER_02: That's what that's what we say.
- 23:38SPEAKER_02: That's a good move.
- 23:39SPEAKER_04: Absolutely.
- 23:40SPEAKER_04: 100% agree.
- 23:41SPEAKER_04: Shuck proceeds again to go four and oh to end the year.
- 23:45SPEAKER_04: Uh, final three games of the regular season against Kansas, Iowa State, and Oklahoma, and then the bull win against Ole Miss.
- 23:52SPEAKER_04: Um, final four games of the year, some stats for Tyler Shuck.
- 23:55SPEAKER_04: 263, 266.3 yards on 24 completion percentage, um, five to two touchdown and interception ratio.
- 24:05SPEAKER_04: Um, so that doesn't really pop out to you, but three rushing TDs during that stretch.
- 24:10SPEAKER_04: Um, biggest takeaway was his rushing, I think, for Shuck.
- 24:14SPEAKER_04: I mean, he had 12, 14, 9, and then 25 carries in the final four games.
- 24:19SPEAKER_04: So uh something to keep an eye on for next season.
- 24:22SPEAKER_04: He obviously likes to run the ball.
- 24:24SPEAKER_04: He is athletic, he is fast, he can do that.
- 24:27SPEAKER_04: Um, there's something that people say about Shuck that he I think with Donovan Smith being there last year, they people do this thing where when you have an athletic running quarterback like Smith, you think the other guys just can't run at all.
- 24:42SPEAKER_04: And so there's no point in saying that he has that part to their game.
- 24:46SPEAKER_04: But Tyler Shuck's got that part to his game.
- 24:48SPEAKER_04: Now, I don't want him rushing 25 25 times a game like he did in that old miss game, but um, you know, he's got that element to him.
- 24:57SPEAKER_02: You know, I yeah, we say that, but at the same time, uh, a team just went completely undefeated doing that and went to the national championship in this conference, having a guy basically do that the entire game.
- 25:08SPEAKER_02: So whatever whatever works, works.
- 25:11SPEAKER_02: But I obviously think Tyler uh Tyler Shuck's the more complete quarterback.
- 25:14SPEAKER_02: Um the dude's dude's big.
- 25:15SPEAKER_02: I I'm looking at the roster.
- 25:16SPEAKER_02: He's six five.
- 25:17SPEAKER_02: He's six five 230, probably a little bigger than that at this point now.
- 25:21SPEAKER_02: I I know we we keep looking at him like he's he's fragile, but I I don't think is he's probably not fragile, it's probably just bad luck, you know.
- 25:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's that's really all you can all break it down to at the end of the day, whenever it comes to all that.
- 25:32SPEAKER_02: So whatever he does run, I think we all like really tense up just because of the history.
- 25:37SPEAKER_02: Normally it'd be like, there you go.
- 25:39SPEAKER_02: Let's go.
- 25:40SPEAKER_04: There's also something to him being previously from the Pac-12, West Coast guy, blonde haired, good looking.
- 25:46SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you kind of think those guys are soft a little bit.
- 25:48SPEAKER_04: For sure.
- 25:48SPEAKER_04: Thomas Chuck's not soft.
- 25:50SPEAKER_04: No, he no, he's a dog, and he showed you that in those last four games.
- 25:54SPEAKER_02: Who is is it Coach Beans or or uh or or Maddie Nomeo, who's been like ready for Darth.
- 26:01SPEAKER_02: Uh no, I think that's uh mean zone mean zone.
- 26:06SPEAKER_02: He's been posting the same Tyler.
- 26:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah, if he posts his face on everything, yes.
- 26:12SPEAKER_02: It's pretty good.
- 26:12SPEAKER_02: I like that, I love that.
- 26:13SPEAKER_02: I do I do what but I do want that Tyler Shuck this season.
- 26:17SPEAKER_02: I I I mean I I think we're gonna get it.
- 26:19SPEAKER_02: I know as we're kind of rounding out this uh discussion with him.
- 26:22SPEAKER_02: I I this is it.
- 26:23SPEAKER_02: This is are you going to are you going to the NFL?
- 26:25SPEAKER_02: Are you gonna are you gonna prove yourself as a college quarterback for your legacy?
- 26:29SPEAKER_02: Like, are you gonna be one of the Texas Tech greats?
- 26:31SPEAKER_02: Because this is the last chance to do that, you know.
- 26:33SPEAKER_02: And you you really and we'll we'll get to it later when we talk about like polls and stuff, but this is really the season.
- 26:38SPEAKER_02: If you're gonna do it, to do it.
- 26:40SPEAKER_02: And I that that's really exciting for the guy.
- 26:42SPEAKER_02: You really gotta love it for a guy that's been trying to fight, fight, fight to do so.
- 26:46SPEAKER_02: So, I mean, I really like Tyler, and I think he's he seems like a really stand-up dude as well.
- 26:51SPEAKER_02: So I'm really excited to see this see uh a senior quarterback really take the reins and uh do what he's supposed to.
- 26:57SPEAKER_02: It's it's really exciting.
- 26:58SPEAKER_04: Going into this year, opted to return to Texas Tech for his extra COVID season, his last year of eligibility.
- 27:06SPEAKER_04: Um, tech fans kind of gone back and forth on Shuck since he arrived at Lubbock.
- 27:11SPEAKER_04: Um, I think he's in a good standing with the fan base.
- 27:13SPEAKER_04: We kind of already touched on that potential for a big year in 2023.
- 27:17SPEAKER_04: Should he stay healthy?
- 27:18SPEAKER_04: He was announced the starter for next year on June 9th.
- 27:22SPEAKER_04: That is very early in the offseason for a quarterback to be announced the starter in what I think we all assumed was gonna be a little more of a competition, especially with Baron Morton deciding to return as well.
- 27:35SPEAKER_04: Um, did you assume there was gonna be more of a competition, or do you think this was always gonna be inevitable going into 2023 that Tyler Shuck was going to start for this team?
- 27:43SPEAKER_02: I think this was always gonna be inevitable.
- 27:44SPEAKER_02: I think we're all I think we're all sort of rooting for Baron Morton, but at the same time, it's it's easy to cheer for Tyler Shuck just because he seems like a really awesome dude and he is he's really he is great to watch.
- 27:54SPEAKER_02: The dude wins, and the way he just ripped open and ruined Lane Kivan's life in that Texas bowl, like how could he not have this job?
- 28:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you know, he just went bananas on a decent SEC team, you know, and just and uh really kind of shut down the narrative that you know he he's he he's not really one to talk about.
- 28:13SPEAKER_02: So um I'm dude, I I don't think there's ever a competition.
- 28:16SPEAKER_02: He's veteran, he is super senior, like that is his job to lose at that point.
- 28:21SPEAKER_02: And I don't know if Baron Morton is just like sitting there trying to snipe the dude.
- 28:25SPEAKER_02: I I think he understands that his time is coming, and I think the coaches have really made sure he's drank that Kool-Aid to know that it's true.
- 28:32SPEAKER_02: Um, not really the Kool-Aid, or just sat and just really reassured him that this will be his team for the next two or three years once Chuck is gone.
- 28:40SPEAKER_02: So I don't think there's any rush, and he's the clear number two.
- 28:44SPEAKER_02: So, in in in in this game, that's there's a good chance he'll get injured.
- 28:48SPEAKER_02: I'm not necessarily for a whole game, but he will get playing time this year for sure.
- 28:51SPEAKER_02: So I'm not I'm not too worried about it.
- 28:53SPEAKER_02: Like, I know, but I mean I do think that it was his job to lose.
- 28:55SPEAKER_02: What about you?
- 28:56SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no, I think the same thing.
- 28:58SPEAKER_04: I didn't think it was going to be announced that early.
- 29:00SPEAKER_04: Um, I thought you know, Joey likes to make his guys happy within the media and within, you know, standing on uh Twitter and all that kind of stuff.
- 29:08SPEAKER_04: Um, but yeah, I I'm glad he did it early because now they have a guy to rally around.
- 29:14SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, and not that Baron Morton can't be that guy, potentially even parts of this year.
- 29:19SPEAKER_04: But um, no, Shuck has shown you something that Morton hasn't shown, and that's leadership.
- 29:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 29:25SPEAKER_04: Uh, and that's not uh uh that's not anything bad to say about Baron Morton.
- 29:29SPEAKER_04: I just think he's younger, hasn't had the his real chance yet.
- 29:33SPEAKER_04: And he will, like you said, he will get his shot, but Tyler Shuck gets one more year at it, and I think you could win a lot of games with it.
- 29:40SPEAKER_04: Um, what do you kind of expect from him in 2023?
- 29:44SPEAKER_02: Uh I expect big things.
- 29:46SPEAKER_02: I think he's gonna go, uh I think he's gonna just kind of go into a goblin mode, just go sicko mode, whatever, whatever you think term you'd like to use.
- 29:53SPEAKER_02: I really think he's gonna go all in.
- 29:55SPEAKER_02: I think he's I think he's gonna try to will himself to every victory he can.
- 29:59SPEAKER_02: Um, because this is his last shot.
- 30:02SPEAKER_02: And I don't necessarily think it's a and I don't say that as like necessarily a selfish thing either.
- 30:06SPEAKER_02: Uh he probably does view himself as the the heartbeat of the team, as he should.
- 30:10SPEAKER_02: You're the super senior quarterback, you know, starting quarterback.
- 30:12SPEAKER_02: You are the heartbeat of the team, at least you should be.
- 30:15SPEAKER_02: Um, so he has to do this for the team.
- 30:17SPEAKER_02: You know, he can he can really set Joey McGuire up, probably coach he really respects up very well uh going forward, um, and cement your legacy at Tech Tech University as one of the greats.
- 30:28SPEAKER_02: And that's that's a phenomenal leaderboard to be on if you could be listed amongst Patrick Mahomes and Graham Harrow.
- 30:35SPEAKER_02: Like that's if you can sit there and do that.
- 30:36SPEAKER_02: And you a quick way to do that is playing in the Big 12 championship game.
- 30:40SPEAKER_02: If you do that, you are instantly on that list.
- 30:42SPEAKER_02: So um I I see big things out of him this year.
- 30:45SPEAKER_02: I have high hopes for this year, and he's a one of the biggest reasons why.
- 30:49SPEAKER_04: Yep, yeah.
- 30:50SPEAKER_04: I mean, the injury concerns are always going to be there, especially going back to back years with a pretty major shoulder injury.
- 30:55SPEAKER_04: Um, but he's and and I think the thing about Chuck is he's experienced, but he's not that experienced.
- 31:01SPEAKER_04: You know, like he did start a full granted COVID season with a team.
- 31:06SPEAKER_04: Uh, he has played in games fully here at Texas Tech, but for a guy that's a fifth-year senior, he's not as experienced as you'd expect him to be on the field.
- 31:15SPEAKER_04: Um, and that is, you know, kind of slightly concerning, but also with the way he ended last year, everything said about him as a leader in the locker room, um, you know, his talent that he's displayed on the field.
- 31:28SPEAKER_04: I I do expect pretty big things from Shuck.
- 31:32SPEAKER_04: Um I expect him to win nine games if he plays the whole year.
- 31:35SPEAKER_04: Yeah, that's what I expect um from Tyler Shuck.
- 31:38SPEAKER_02: Me too.
- 31:39SPEAKER_04: Yep.
- 31:40SPEAKER_04: So um Shuck.
- 31:42SPEAKER_04: Also Shuck it.
- 31:44SPEAKER_04: Second year in the system that needs to be talked about.
- 31:47SPEAKER_04: Uh, has had a new offensive coordinator pretty much every year of his college career.
- 31:51SPEAKER_04: Um, this is his first year that he's going into with the same offensive coordinator in the same offensive system.
- 31:57SPEAKER_04: Uh, and this is a guy that picked it up apparently very quickly last offseason when he was named a starter and won over, won the job over Morton and uh Donovan Smith.
- 32:06SPEAKER_04: So um that should be that needs to be mentioned.
- 32:08SPEAKER_02: I mean, talk about a huge boost.
- 32:10SPEAKER_02: That's a that's a good underlying fact there with uh with Kitley, second-year Kiddley, because you hope that's uh Kitley's grown a lot as a second year as a P5 coordinator as well.
- 32:19SPEAKER_02: So and being able to sit here and build this book around Tyler Shuck and really hopefully stick with Tyler Shuck with that book is it's a really great thing.
- 32:26SPEAKER_02: And I mean, Zach Kitley is really underrated for the quarter.
- 32:30SPEAKER_02: I I don't maybe I'm pulling stuff out of thin air with the word like overrated, but he has a very fine list of quarterbacks he's he's worked with.
- 32:39SPEAKER_02: And he a Tyler Shuck could very well be a feather in that gap.
- 32:42SPEAKER_02: I mean, we're we're talking, we're talking Patrick Mahomes, we're talking um Billy Zappe.
- 32:46SPEAKER_02: Is Zappy or Zape?
- 32:47SPEAKER_02: I'm freaking zappy, my brother.
- 32:48SPEAKER_04: Bailey Zappy, yeah.
- 32:49SPEAKER_02: Bailey Zappy, that's right.
- 32:51SPEAKER_02: Um, so he's got he's got a good list there, and that's a that's in a lot of that probably has to do with his system as well.
- 32:57SPEAKER_02: So I'm really looking forward to seeing Tyler Shuck be really kitlized in the second uh season as well.
- 33:03SPEAKER_02: That's a good point, man.
- 33:04SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no doubt.
- 33:04SPEAKER_04: His biggest thing is gonna be consistency going into next year.
- 33:07SPEAKER_04: Uh, need to avoid kind of those backbreaking interceptions that we kind of saw a little bit uh in Tyler Shuck's tenure, Stephen F.
- 33:14SPEAKER_04: Austin game, the Houston game this year, you know, or that was a Smith, but um no, just he just needs to, you're gonna throw interceptions in the system.
- 33:22SPEAKER_04: You throw so much in the system, but he needs to be more patient with himself.
- 33:27SPEAKER_04: Uh, hopefully he's got a little better O-line uh to give him a little more time to make these decisions uh going into next year.
- 33:34SPEAKER_04: But overall, I think I'm excited to have Tyler Shuck.
- 33:37SPEAKER_04: I think he has the potential to be one of, if not the best, quarterback in the Big 12 next year.
- 33:44SPEAKER_02: Oh, absolutely.
- 33:45SPEAKER_02: I think I think he's not bored easily.
- 33:47SPEAKER_04: Yep, for sure.
- 33:48SPEAKER_04: I uh you you got some guys and you know, you got some talent, but uh consistently with this team, I think he could be one of those dudes.
- 33:56SPEAKER_02: For sure.
- 33:56SPEAKER_04: So let's go to Barron.
- 33:58SPEAKER_04: Barron Morton, redshirt sophomore, 21 years old, Eastland, Texas product, six foot two, 210 pounds.
- 34:05SPEAKER_04: That's what he's listed at.
- 34:07SPEAKER_04: Might be a little bigger uh after the offseason ends.
- 34:09SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 34:10SPEAKER_04: Three three years of eligibility left for Barron Morton.
- 34:13SPEAKER_04: You need to remember that.
- 34:15SPEAKER_04: Um spent the last spent the last two years at Texas Tech behind Tyler Shuck, Henry Columbi, Donovan Smith, um, highest rated quarterback recruit in school history, seventh all-time highest recruit in school history, uh, grew up a Texas Tech fan, stuck through commitment to the university, through coaching changes, um, had offers out of high school from AM, USC, TCU, Baylor, Wisconsin, big programs.
- 34:45SPEAKER_04: Uh, and he is here, he is still here in Lubbock, Texas.
- 34:49SPEAKER_04: What do you think?
- 34:50SPEAKER_04: Baron Morton.
- 34:51SPEAKER_02: The homegrown kid, man, West Texas kid, like you just said, grew up a Texas Tech fan.
- 34:57SPEAKER_02: Um, and it's it's you know, this dude freaking loves this school, kind of with the points you made.
- 35:03SPEAKER_02: The dude has has been at tech in a rough stretch.
- 35:08SPEAKER_02: It's it's been tough.
- 35:10SPEAKER_02: Like he could have gone to schools in much better situations um with his talent.
- 35:15SPEAKER_02: But he's still just game because he wanted to play at TechSech.
- 35:18SPEAKER_02: And you gotta love that, you gotta admire that.
- 35:20SPEAKER_02: Um, and you could not have a better QB2.
- 35:23SPEAKER_02: This guy could be a QB1 at a whole lot of universities right now.
- 35:28SPEAKER_02: He could have transferred out like Donovan Smith did, but I think uh Donovan Smith did see the writing on the wall that he was number three at this point, and uh, we saw you know some uh blights of magic whenever he was playing Oklahoma State, where he was really kicking ass.
- 35:44SPEAKER_02: And he saw even even uh the the old the oldest tenured football coach of the Big 12 at this point, while to say is uh Mike Gundy, um, even commented on that.
- 35:53SPEAKER_02: Um I think it's fantastic you got three more years with him because uh it's it's obvious that after the season he has those two years, so it's the this team will be his, and I think right now it's just a year for him to develop and obviously be very a very reliable gunslinger right behind Tyler if needed.
- 36:14SPEAKER_02: Um how plug and play do you think Baron is in a Tyler offense, though?
- 36:21SPEAKER_04: I think, yeah, I think he in a Kidley system, I think he's actually better fit for Zach Kidley than Tyler Shuck is.
- 36:28SPEAKER_04: Um, I think he's more of a Bailey Zappy type.
- 36:31SPEAKER_04: Uh a guy who can just throw 60 times a game and it's no problem.
- 36:35SPEAKER_04: Like uh obviously needed some time to bulk up, needed some time to learn.
- 36:40SPEAKER_04: Um, not every quarterback is the same.
- 36:43SPEAKER_04: I mean, this guy's he's the most talented quarterback on the roster.
- 36:45SPEAKER_04: There's no You think so?
- 36:47SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 36:47SPEAKER_04: More so than Shuck.
- 36:49SPEAKER_04: Yeah, Barron Morton is more talented than Tyler Shuck.
- 36:51SPEAKER_04: Now, I don't that doesn't translate.
- 36:54SPEAKER_04: That doesn't automatically mean that I think Barron Morton would lead to more wins if he started, but he is.
- 36:59SPEAKER_04: If you saw any part of that Oklahoma State game last year, you saw what that guy made 15 unbelievable throws in that game.
- 37:06SPEAKER_04: I mean, it was stupid.
- 37:07SPEAKER_04: Well, I was mind blown because it was everything that we were fed to believe about Barrett Morton and he showed it until he got injured and rolled up in that game.
- 37:15SPEAKER_04: Um let's talk about his 2022 because he did play.
- 37:19SPEAKER_04: Uh played a little sparingly in the Murray State and NC State games after Tyler Shuck went down with injuries and Donovan Smith got hurt a little bit.
- 37:26SPEAKER_04: Um, but made his first career start in still water against number seven ranked Oklahoma State.
- 37:32SPEAKER_04: That is a tough situation to be in.
- 37:34SPEAKER_04: Uh, you're going in a hostile environment.
- 37:37SPEAKER_04: Um, your team is already down two quarterbacks, uh, and you're kind of thrown into the fire.
- 37:42SPEAKER_04: You're getting third team reps, you're getting second team reps in practice the whole year, and he goes in there, showed exactly what the hype was all about.
- 37:51SPEAKER_04: He had, like I mentioned, 15 incredible throws in that game over, took a top 10 team down to the wire on the road.
- 37:57SPEAKER_04: Um, leg was wrapped up in the third quarter and mobility was pretty limited for the rest of the game, which sucked because really after he got injured, I mean, he was completely different.
- 38:07SPEAKER_04: He couldn't really escape the pocket much.
- 38:09SPEAKER_04: Um, he was off on some throws, he made some bad plays, but again, he's hobbling at that point.
- 38:15SPEAKER_06: Yeah, he'll find the pain.
- 38:16SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it was it.
- 38:17SPEAKER_04: I don't take anything that happened after midway through that third quarter very seriously because of the situation he was in.
- 38:24SPEAKER_04: But man, that first half was insane.
- 38:27SPEAKER_02: No, absolutely, dude.
- 38:28SPEAKER_02: And he he really is kind of like the the the star to be on the team.
- 38:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I I do like that he's a talent, talented.
- 38:36SPEAKER_02: Like he's he probably has like the highest potential of everybody uh on the with the quarterback next to their name right now.
- 38:42SPEAKER_02: Uh, I I do like that.
- 38:43SPEAKER_02: And I like I said, like I do think I do love that he's backing up right now, though.
- 38:48SPEAKER_02: I I just I seriously think you get another year with him underneath a veteran quarterback and to just really work on him uh with under a Kitley system for what would be what four years at that point?
- 38:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's that's just that that's a great feature to look at.
- 39:03SPEAKER_02: Um and it's I don't know if I don't know if we could ever really be in a better situation.
- 39:08SPEAKER_02: Our quarterback room is is stacked right now.
- 39:10SPEAKER_02: Um at least with the top two.
- 39:12SPEAKER_02: You know after that, it's a bit of a mystery, but that's that's two dudes to be rolled deep with.
- 39:17SPEAKER_04: No doubt, no doubt.
- 39:18SPEAKER_04: Continuing continuing into last year, second career start at home, for first career start at home against uh West Virginia in uh in 2022.
- 39:27SPEAKER_04: Tech wins 48 to 10.
- 39:29SPEAKER_04: Um, Morton was incredible in this game.
- 39:31SPEAKER_04: Uh, 325 yards, two touchdowns.
- 39:34SPEAKER_04: This is where the fan praise really started coming in.
- 39:36SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 39:37SPEAKER_04: I mean, it was it was already there after Oklahoma State, but we did lose that game, so it's like a little tampered.
- 39:42SPEAKER_04: But when and West Virginia wasn't it wasn't any good last year.
- 39:46SPEAKER_04: But you go and beat them by 38 points at home, uh, you know, with your home crowd there, hometown kids starting.
- 39:53SPEAKER_04: This is the fans are all in on Barron Morton at this point.
- 39:57SPEAKER_04: Then Baylor.
- 39:59SPEAKER_04: Third, third career start against Baylor last year.
- 40:02SPEAKER_04: Um the Baylor game was the most hype game for Texas Tech in a long time.
- 40:07SPEAKER_04: You had the Mahomes induction to the Ring of Honor, you had uh a night game, you had a blackout, you had Joey McGuire coaching against his former team for the first time, and uh your team put up a stinker.
- 40:22SPEAKER_04: Um to put it, I mean, Morton was bad.
- 40:25SPEAKER_04: It was 45-17, um, 32% completion percentage, three interceptions.
- 40:30SPEAKER_04: Um, that put kind of a pretty quick halt on the Baron Morton hype train um for a lot of people.
- 40:36SPEAKER_04: A lot of people, you know, will never stop on something, but that game really put a damper on things, uh, especially with a Baylor team that wasn't really worth much last year.
- 40:48SPEAKER_02: We were the better team.
- 40:50SPEAKER_04: Yeah, they made a bowl game, they were solid, but they weren't, they shouldn't have beat you at all.
- 40:54SPEAKER_02: But then they win lawsuit to the troops.
- 40:56SPEAKER_02: I mean, you gotta respect the troops.
- 40:57SPEAKER_02: Always respect, but they didn't they go and lose to the troops in the in the uh ABC's Dallas Bowl game.
- 41:03SPEAKER_02: So, like, what what the heck, man?
- 41:06SPEAKER_02: But um, that was a stinker of a game.
- 41:08SPEAKER_02: I had that game washed from my mind, I can like barely even recall it.
- 41:12SPEAKER_02: I don't know if that's because of what was in my hand or just flat out my mind was doing a defense mechanism that is pretty necessary as a as a Texas Tech fan sometime.
- 41:22SPEAKER_04: The whole team was very bad.
- 41:23SPEAKER_04: Dave Aranda read McGuire like a book.
- 41:26SPEAKER_04: I think that was a coaching display, more so than anything.
- 41:30SPEAKER_04: Um, but the the guys put up a stinker, it was bad.
- 41:33SPEAKER_04: Uh, I like to forget that game plainly, but you need to mention it when you're talking about Baron Morton because that it was bad.
- 41:39SPEAKER_04: He was he was really bad that whole game.
- 41:42SPEAKER_04: Um, made his fourth start against the undefeated and championship game bound TCU Hornfrogs in Fort Worth.
- 41:49SPEAKER_04: Um again, like we mentioned, did a really solid job in that first half of the game until he got injured again.
- 41:54SPEAKER_04: Uh leg rolled up on a QB run.
- 41:56SPEAKER_04: Uh, he was not the same.
- 41:58SPEAKER_04: They took him out for injury, threw in Tyler Shuck and Donovan Smith and tried to do that whole thing.
- 42:03SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 42:03SPEAKER_04: Um, but it just he he had TCU going in that first half.
- 42:10SPEAKER_04: And we only ended up losing by a touchdown, I think.
- 42:12SPEAKER_04: But man, it was if we had Barron Morton that full game, I would have really liked to see how that ended.
- 42:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that TCU game was a bit of a heartbreaker.
- 42:21SPEAKER_02: Uh because that we're talking about quarterbacks, the defense was just outstanding that game.
- 42:26SPEAKER_02: So just to to have uh to have us fall short just slightly like that always really stings, especially against an in-state rival like that.
- 42:34SPEAKER_02: Um, we could have crushed their their dreams, dang it.
- 42:36SPEAKER_02: But um, but yeah, man, I think I think you're just kind of like touching on this, he's had some booms and busts.
- 42:43SPEAKER_02: And obviously, I think that kind of that kind of gets evened out with experience, and that's all he's missing right now.
- 42:49SPEAKER_02: So I think that's gonna be something to watch next year as you hopefully he's ready to just move into that veteran royal role and and and play like hell.
- 42:57SPEAKER_02: But um heck, it might it might take a couple of years than that too.
- 43:00SPEAKER_02: But I he does have the talent there.
- 43:02SPEAKER_02: But all in all, I mean the dude's a gunslinger and he he's gonna make gunslinging mistakes, so it's just part of the game.
- 43:09SPEAKER_04: He played in basically three full games and then a handful of other like you know moments in other games last year.
- 43:16SPEAKER_04: Uh his final stat line was 1,117 yards, seven touchdowns, six interceptions, two rushing touchdowns.
- 43:22SPEAKER_04: So that's that kind of explains it.
- 43:24SPEAKER_04: This is kind of the moment where you see the stat line kind of explaining who that guy was last year, and that was up and down stretches, a lot of yards.
- 43:31SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, the two rushing TDs was something impressive.
- 43:35SPEAKER_04: Uh, but he he can get some offense going and he can also, you've seen the really bad moments.
- 43:40SPEAKER_04: So the the talent 100% is there, though.
- 43:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I I will say that I don't know, I don't know if we've ever had a quarterback with so much like hope behind him fan base wise.
- 43:52SPEAKER_02: Like I I the fans love this kid.
- 43:55SPEAKER_04: And we were pretty in on Mahomes after he started those first few games.
- 43:59SPEAKER_02: Oh, for sure.
- 44:00SPEAKER_02: But for sure.
- 44:00SPEAKER_02: Probably but uh probably since Mahomes, he is probably our most hyped up quarterback since then.
- 44:05SPEAKER_04: I'd have to say Bowman, six touchdowns.
- 44:09SPEAKER_04: Uh he had like 500 yards against Houston.
- 44:12SPEAKER_04: Bowman was hyped.
- 44:14SPEAKER_02: But but but was Bowman hyped right out of high school?
- 44:16SPEAKER_04: Like Barron has been up since Mahomes wasn't hyped out of high school either.
- 44:21SPEAKER_04: I mean, true.
- 44:22SPEAKER_02: If you're talking just directly out of high school, yeah.
- 44:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 44:25SPEAKER_02: But he's probably probably the most hyped up kid, maybe perhaps in Texas Tech history, quarterback-wise.
- 44:30SPEAKER_02: So he's he's for sure.
- 44:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he's got a big, he's got a big shadow to fill there.
- 44:35SPEAKER_02: And I think he's I think he's up for it.
- 44:37SPEAKER_02: It's just not this year.
- 44:38SPEAKER_02: It's this is the Tyler Shuck year.
- 44:40SPEAKER_02: I think that's some I think that's the ultimate ending to this quarterback conversation at the end of the day.
- 44:44SPEAKER_02: Is it's this is Tyler Shuck's year and it always has been once he did announce that he's staying.
- 44:49SPEAKER_02: And uh, I'm just very happy that Baron Morton decided to stick around.
- 44:53SPEAKER_02: Um, and it didn't really break any of our hearts to see Smith go because we had Don because we had Barron Morton right behind Shuck.
- 44:58SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 44:59SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 44:59SPEAKER_04: And uh opted to return to Texas Tech despite pretty much knowing that Shuck was going to be the guy going into this year.
- 45:06SPEAKER_04: Um, Donovan Smith opted to transfer to Houston, like you mentioned.
- 45:10SPEAKER_04: Um what does what is Barry because nine percent of quarterbacks in Baron Morton's position would have transferred at this point in how college football works and he opted to return.
- 45:23SPEAKER_04: Um, what does that say about him?
- 45:25SPEAKER_02: I think he's committed.
- 45:26SPEAKER_02: I think I think he's I think this guy is a red raider.
- 45:30SPEAKER_02: And I just I really think that this is this is his dream, and no other place is his dream.
- 45:35SPEAKER_02: Like his dream is to play at Texas Tech University.
- 45:38SPEAKER_02: His dream, I bet his dream is to, you know, to win a Big 12 championship at Texas Tech.
- 45:42SPEAKER_02: That's probably always been his mission to come here and do and be the first to do it.
- 45:45SPEAKER_02: Um, I hope he's not the first to do it.
- 45:47SPEAKER_02: I hope Tyler Shuck is, but ultimately that that that could be up to him to do so.
- 45:52SPEAKER_02: Um, I think and I think he loves the staff.
- 45:55SPEAKER_02: I think the staff has done a really great job to ensure his uh keeping him happy, you know, ensure it's maybe maybe not so much keeping him happy because that makes him sound like a salesman.
- 46:03SPEAKER_02: I think they've done a really great job of keeping his eyes on the prize, like keeping his keeping him focused more than anything.
- 46:09SPEAKER_02: Because whenever you transfer, obviously your eye your your mind is wavering, your eyes are looking around.
- 46:13SPEAKER_02: But whenever you're like you're whenever you're full send in, you're obviously locked in and ready to get the get the job done.
- 46:18SPEAKER_02: I think I think that's what this kid is.
- 46:19SPEAKER_02: I think this kid is here to win at Texas Tech.
- 46:22SPEAKER_02: I don't think him winning at OEU or USC is the same thing to him.
- 46:26SPEAKER_02: I I don't, you know, so or whoever else would have uh would have had him, which would have been a long list of schools.
- 46:33SPEAKER_02: So I think I think that's what it is at the end of the day.
- 46:35SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and if everything goes right, we should have a full year of Tyler Shuck.
- 46:39SPEAKER_04: But if we do not, because as we well know as Texas Tech fans, quarterbacks get hurt a lot here.
- 46:47SPEAKER_04: Um, it's not a guarantee that the guy who was named the starter on June 9th is gonna play the whole season.
- 46:52SPEAKER_04: So, kind of to round out this quarterback conversation with these two guys, how much does Barron Morton play next year?
- 47:00SPEAKER_04: Does he play?
- 47:00SPEAKER_04: Does he play a few games?
- 47:02SPEAKER_04: What's the situation?
- 47:04SPEAKER_02: I don't think he's starting.
- 47:05SPEAKER_02: I don't think he's starting at all.
- 47:06SPEAKER_04: Um you don't think he's starting one single game next year?
- 47:09SPEAKER_02: Uh you're talking about this upcoming season, right?
- 47:11SPEAKER_02: This this upcoming season, so yeah, no, I don't think so.
- 47:14SPEAKER_04: So it's a you think Tyler Shuck is gonna play well enough for him to start every single game this year?
- 47:21SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 47:22SPEAKER_04: So you don't you another question, I guess, is like how long or how short is Tyler Shuck's leash?
- 47:28SPEAKER_04: You know, if he puts up a couple stinkers, if he loses two straight, if he loses three straight, if he loses this or that, when does Barron Morton get thrown in?
- 47:37SPEAKER_04: I think the leash is through.
- 47:39SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 47:40SPEAKER_02: I think I think it once he once he's once he's lost three games, and the a lot of the a lot of eyes are like, I mean, I guess it doesn't really matter how we lose him at that point.
- 47:49SPEAKER_02: I think three games is the limit.
- 47:50SPEAKER_02: I think two in a row.
- 47:51SPEAKER_02: No, I don't think they're they're pinching him yet.
- 47:53SPEAKER_02: It's a good question, but I I really I really think you know, barring an injury, I think Tyler Shuck is starting every single game this year.
- 48:00SPEAKER_02: And I think he's up for it too.
- 48:01SPEAKER_02: I I don't I don't I don't see the the meltdown happening.
- 48:05SPEAKER_02: Obviously, that's not really something you can um predict predict, yeah, but it's I I I don't envision that occurring.
- 48:14SPEAKER_04: Like I I think this is kind of preface.
- 48:16SPEAKER_04: You can say it, uh, if Tyler Shuck loses the Oregon game, he's not getting benched the next game.
- 48:21SPEAKER_04: He's just not.
- 48:22SPEAKER_04: That's not gonna be the case.
- 48:23SPEAKER_04: Uh, because Oregon's very not losing that game.
- 48:26SPEAKER_04: I I'm I'm not ready to predict yet.
- 48:28SPEAKER_04: We'll predict a little later.
- 48:30SPEAKER_04: Tyler 30 more weeks coming by.
- 48:31SPEAKER_02: He's not losing to Oregon.
- 48:33SPEAKER_02: That's not happening.
- 48:34SPEAKER_02: That's gonna be book it right now.
- 48:36SPEAKER_02: That's one of the biggest upsets early in the in the in the college football season.
- 48:39SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 48:40SPEAKER_04: I uh I've been spurned before by a hyped up Texas Tech game.
- 48:45SPEAKER_04: Um, Baylor being the one specifically last year.
- 48:48SPEAKER_04: Uh, there was just too much going on.
- 48:50SPEAKER_04: Now I think I I don't know.
- 48:51SPEAKER_04: I'm not ready to predict the Oregon game yet, but I also I think I think Shuck's leash with because of how good Baron Morton is, I do think it's a little shorter than what some may think.
- 49:02SPEAKER_04: Um, if he loses two straight games and he puts up absolute stinkers, I think Baron Morton is kind of thrown in.
- 49:08SPEAKER_02: And they start talking about in game three.
- 49:11SPEAKER_02: You think he Baron Morton starts if Tyler Shucks stinker bomb?
- 49:14SPEAKER_04: Well, first off, if you lose to Wyoming, it may be one game.
- 49:17SPEAKER_02: Oh, okay.
- 49:18SPEAKER_02: But if we lose to Wyoming, I this season has gone a completely different direction immediately in no time flat, which I would appreciate.
- 49:27SPEAKER_02: Take me out early, okay, if you're gonna do that.
- 49:30SPEAKER_02: Like at least set the tone for how this is gonna go, if that's the case.
- 49:34SPEAKER_04: But I'm not putting that out there in the world, but it's talking about like it's that evil's now in the ether.
- 49:39SPEAKER_02: Thanks.
- 49:40SPEAKER_04: No, it's no, that's not true.
- 49:42SPEAKER_04: It's just uh this team is very hyped up, it's very hyped up, and it's a little scary.
- 49:47SPEAKER_04: Uh because of the Texas Tech content.
- 49:50SPEAKER_04: I understand.
- 49:51SPEAKER_04: I understand.
- 49:51SPEAKER_04: It's hyped up.
- 49:52SPEAKER_04: Joey McGuire had a great first year.
- 49:54SPEAKER_04: He's recruiting like hell.
- 49:56SPEAKER_04: This team is hyped up, got a lot of talent, but I I just I'm scared.
- 50:00SPEAKER_04: I'm a little scared.
- 50:01SPEAKER_02: That's not an easy game either.
- 50:03SPEAKER_04: I mean, we're gonna get there, but that's a pretty tough game.
- 50:05SPEAKER_04: It's the open awakening, isn't it?
- 50:06SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it's an awakening.
- 50:07SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it's a tough opening, dude.
- 50:09SPEAKER_04: Yeah, so you're gonna find out about Tyler Shuck in that one.
- 50:12SPEAKER_04: Um, and obviously Oregon will tell you a lot, but if you straight up start a Big 12 play like 0-2, I think we start looking at Morton.
- 50:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you know, I you're right.
- 50:22SPEAKER_02: I think um from the outside, I think you have a more grounded view of what's going on.
- 50:26SPEAKER_02: Um, I think I think I guess with my prediction, I just I just don't see Tyler Shuck doing that.
- 50:31SPEAKER_02: I I he hasn't given an indie indication that he's going to do that in his you know, in what we've seen.
- 50:38SPEAKER_02: You know, like we just like we like opened up the entire Tyler Shuck conversation saying that the numbers haven't lied, the wins haven't lied, the dude games.
- 50:45SPEAKER_02: So I just don't envision him getting just flat out beat, like him.
- 50:50SPEAKER_02: I don't see Tyler Shuck getting beat.
- 50:53SPEAKER_02: If we're losing the games, I don't think it's just from piss poor quarterback play.
- 50:56SPEAKER_04: It could, I hope that's the case.
- 50:58SPEAKER_04: I really and I think that for the most part too.
- 51:00SPEAKER_04: I just want to be, you know, bring up both sides of the conversation here so it's not just Tyler Shuck love fest the entire time, yeah.
- 51:06SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 51:06SPEAKER_04: Well, I do love him.
- 51:07SPEAKER_02: I do too.
- 51:08SPEAKER_02: Shredded, he's got a six pack, and from what I've seen, he's really bulked up this season.
- 51:13SPEAKER_04: He hasn't lost an arm wrestle, he's arm wrestled everybody on the team, hasn't lost.
- 51:18SPEAKER_04: He's uh he's he will take your girlfriend.
- 51:21SPEAKER_04: Yeah, he will take he's happily engaged.
- 51:24SPEAKER_04: Thank you.
- 51:25SPEAKER_04: Is he really?
- 51:25SPEAKER_04: Yeah, he got engaged after last season, I think.
- 51:28SPEAKER_02: Good for him.
- 51:28SPEAKER_04: Yeah, well, he's 23.
- 51:30SPEAKER_04: I mean, he's gonna be able to get it.
- 51:30SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 51:31SPEAKER_02: But still, you're in college, you know, it's not very common.
- 51:33SPEAKER_02: Good for him.
- 51:34SPEAKER_04: For sure, for sure.
- 51:35SPEAKER_04: Um, all right, let's just quickly hit on the other three quarterbacks.
- 51:39SPEAKER_04: Heck yes.
- 51:41SPEAKER_04: No, you gotta start, you gotta start, you gotta start this right, though.
- 51:43SPEAKER_04: Who is number three?
- 51:45SPEAKER_04: Okay, number three.
- 51:46SPEAKER_04: I mean, I think for me, number three is Jaden Morris.
- 51:50SPEAKER_04: Um, really, yeah, we're not talking Jake Strong is gonna redshirt this year.
- 51:54SPEAKER_04: Okay, okay that's that's the plan.
- 51:56SPEAKER_04: That is the plan.
- 51:57SPEAKER_04: Now, obviously, things change.
- 51:59SPEAKER_04: If three quarterbacks get hurt, you kind of have to play them.
- 52:02SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you know, I I you don't want to start a true freshman.
- 52:06SPEAKER_04: You don't want to do that.
- 52:06SPEAKER_04: You want to give him a tie, you want to give him a season to learn, to you know, engage with the team to kind of learn how to be a Big 12 level football player before you throw him in there.
- 52:16SPEAKER_04: And I'm gonna say Jake Strong, Jake Strong may not even play a snap as we were talking about prepod, but he's a true freshman, he's 19.
- 52:23SPEAKER_04: He's from he's from Justin, Texas.
- 52:25SPEAKER_04: He's six foot one, 210 pounds, he's got some good weight on him already for being 19.
- 52:30SPEAKER_04: He's got a six-pack, he's got four four years of eligibility.
- 52:34SPEAKER_04: That doesn't need to be used next year.
- 52:36SPEAKER_04: He's got four years of of perhaps unused time.
- 52:39SPEAKER_04: Yeah, perhaps, yeah.
- 52:41SPEAKER_04: Let's talk max preps.
- 52:42SPEAKER_04: I did a little background on Jake Strong's uh high school career.
- 52:46SPEAKER_04: Three straight 2,000 plus yard passing seasons at Northwest High School in Justin, Texas.
- 52:54SPEAKER_04: Um, each season having above 23 touchdowns, set the high school record for career passing yards, passing touchdowns, total yards, total touchdowns.
- 53:03SPEAKER_04: Um, is able to use his legs.
- 53:05SPEAKER_04: He totaled 1,500 plus rushing yards in his four years, 18 rushing touchdowns in high school.
- 53:12SPEAKER_04: Um, dual threat guy through and through.
- 53:15SPEAKER_04: He's not gonna play this year.
- 53:16SPEAKER_02: No, no.
- 53:18SPEAKER_02: Okay, that makes sense.
- 53:19SPEAKER_02: That makes sense.
- 53:19SPEAKER_02: I guess I was just kind of thinking of like flat out, this guy's probably the third best quarterback in the room.
- 53:24SPEAKER_04: So yeah, I I would probably agree, but you don't want to play true freshman quarterback.
- 53:28SPEAKER_04: You don't waste a year of eligible.
- 53:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you have two really solid options of all.
- 53:33SPEAKER_02: But it's kind of funny though.
- 53:34SPEAKER_02: Like last season, we were not that screwed on our third string.
- 53:37SPEAKER_02: You know, we were like, we have good three good quarterbacks, so it's not it's not that big issue.
- 53:41SPEAKER_02: Now it's an issue.
- 53:42SPEAKER_02: Now we have a problem on our third string quarterback.
- 53:45SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 53:46SPEAKER_02: Unless it's Jared the GOAT Morris.
- 53:48SPEAKER_02: Jaden.
- 53:50SPEAKER_02: Jaden, my bad.
- 53:51SPEAKER_04: Jaden Morris.
- 53:52SPEAKER_04: I know nothing about Jaden Morris.
- 53:53SPEAKER_04: I didn't do a deep dive on Jaden Morris.
- 53:55SPEAKER_04: I'm sorry.
- 53:55SPEAKER_04: Kind of um pre-quarterback preview is this.
- 53:58SPEAKER_04: He's gonna be the guy that comes in after Tyler Shuck and Baron Morton have either led us to a 50-point dub or we're down 50, or everybody got hurt, and it's the worst season ever.
- 54:10SPEAKER_04: So that's when you'll see Jaden Morris and Will Burns play.
- 54:13SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 54:14SPEAKER_02: Well, it last last last season he was the uh redshirt scout team, did not see any action.
- 54:20SPEAKER_02: So he's yeah, he's ready, he's fresh, he's ready to go.
- 54:23SPEAKER_02: Like you're ready, you can open that can and spray it.
- 54:26SPEAKER_04: I will say something worth noting about these three guys.
- 54:29SPEAKER_04: You can redshirt there's like a four-game minimum.
- 54:32SPEAKER_04: So you can appear in four games if you redshirt on our like on a redshirt year.
- 54:37SPEAKER_04: You can actually play snaps and still redshirt.
- 54:40SPEAKER_04: So, you know, you may see these guys in a Wyoming game, or what who do we play?
- 54:45SPEAKER_04: ACU is that the third game?
- 54:46SPEAKER_04: Who who do we play in the third game?
- 54:48SPEAKER_04: Uh our Tarlton.
- 54:50SPEAKER_04: So in the Tarleton game, you may see these guys.
- 54:53SPEAKER_04: Inaugural game, I believe.
- 54:55SPEAKER_04: Uh good for them.
- 54:56SPEAKER_04: Good for good for Tarleton.
- 54:58SPEAKER_02: Go for the Texans.
- 54:59SPEAKER_04: Good for the Donald.
- 55:00SPEAKER_04: It's it's Texans is a bad mascot.
- 55:03SPEAKER_04: It's a bad mascot.
- 55:04SPEAKER_04: It's a bad mascot.
- 55:05SPEAKER_04: Sorry, Houston.
- 55:06SPEAKER_04: Um, I think every Texans fan agrees that it's a bad mascot.
- 55:10SPEAKER_02: I think every Texan fan agrees that it's a bad team.
- 55:16SPEAKER_02: Poverty franchise.
- 55:18SPEAKER_04: Sorry, Texans fans.
- 55:20SPEAKER_04: Uh they got something going with these last two.
- 55:23SPEAKER_04: All right.
- 55:24SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 55:24SPEAKER_04: We'll see.
- 55:25SPEAKER_04: We'll see.
- 55:26SPEAKER_03: What about Will Burns?
- 55:27SPEAKER_03: Steven?
- 55:28SPEAKER_03: I know nothing about Will Burns.
- 55:29SPEAKER_02: What do you want from me?
- 55:30SPEAKER_02: From Mission Vejo, California.
- 55:33SPEAKER_02: Of course.
- 55:34SPEAKER_02: He traveled across the country for his chance, dog.
- 55:37SPEAKER_02: Let's he has no bio.
- 55:39SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 55:40SPEAKER_02: Um all right.
- 55:41SPEAKER_02: So it's not Will Burns.
- 55:42SPEAKER_02: Will Burns is not the third string.
- 55:44SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 55:45SPEAKER_02: It is Mr.
- 55:46SPEAKER_02: Morris.
- 55:47SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 55:48SPEAKER_04: You got I don't, he may be a walk-on.
- 55:50SPEAKER_04: I don't know.
- 55:50SPEAKER_02: Probably.
- 55:51SPEAKER_04: Jake, Jake Strong.
- 55:52SPEAKER_04: I guess we could talk about it now while we had pre-pod.
- 55:56SPEAKER_04: Does Jake Strong ever play for Texas Tech?
- 55:59SPEAKER_02: No.
- 56:00SPEAKER_04: Does Jake?
- 56:01SPEAKER_04: I mean, okay, that's good.
- 56:03SPEAKER_04: Thank you.
- 56:03SPEAKER_04: Does does Jake Strong ever start a game for Texas Tech?
- 56:07SPEAKER_02: No.
- 56:08SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 56:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Plato, no.
- 56:10SPEAKER_02: I don't think he ever will.
- 56:11SPEAKER_02: Um, I not it's not a knock on the kid.
- 56:13SPEAKER_02: And it's it's kind of it's kind of a jerk move to be ripping on an 18-year-old like this.
- 56:18SPEAKER_02: 19.
- 56:19SPEAKER_02: 19.
- 56:20SPEAKER_02: All right, okay, he's ready.
- 56:21SPEAKER_02: Um, so we we have we have one of the highest rated recruits ever at the quarterback position.
- 56:28SPEAKER_02: Probably he's probably second only to Barry Morton at this point.
- 56:30SPEAKER_02: Maybe Graham Harrell is above him, but um his name is Will Hammond, obviously.
- 56:36SPEAKER_02: Y'all know who this is at a hundred hippo 2024.
- 56:39SPEAKER_02: So he's gonna be coming in next season.
- 56:40SPEAKER_02: He will be a true freshman next season.
- 56:43SPEAKER_02: And while Jake Strong will probably have used his uh red shirt, um, but then he's gotta live uh under Baron Morton for two years, Mr.
- 56:50SPEAKER_02: Strong.
- 56:50SPEAKER_02: Uh very likely so.
- 56:52SPEAKER_02: Maybe at that point.
- 56:55SPEAKER_02: I don't know if that's likely.
- 56:56SPEAKER_02: What do you mean?
- 56:57SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 56:57SPEAKER_04: I don't know if Baron Morton starts two years after at Texas Tech.
- 57:01SPEAKER_04: I think he does.
- 57:01SPEAKER_04: I don't I don't I don't think he's he could be that dude.
- 57:04SPEAKER_04: That'll be his fourth, his his first year starting, which is supposed to be next year, will be his fourth year at Texas Tech.
- 57:12SPEAKER_04: I think he's he's ready.
- 57:14SPEAKER_04: Like if he's ready, he's gonna show it next year for the NFL.
- 57:20SPEAKER_04: Really, yeah.
- 57:22SPEAKER_04: I don't think Baron Morton starts two years at Texas Tech.
- 57:26SPEAKER_02: What?
- 57:26SPEAKER_02: No, I disagree.
- 57:27SPEAKER_02: I think I think he's here for the next two years.
- 57:28SPEAKER_02: I don't I don't see him going to the NFL after one season.
- 57:31SPEAKER_02: I don't see it.
- 57:32SPEAKER_02: I do not see that.
- 57:34SPEAKER_02: I think he's a quarter I think he's more of a college quarterback than probably a professional quarterback, but I think we just haven't really seen enough out of him yet.
- 57:40SPEAKER_02: I'm I'm not saying he doesn't have that potential, but I I just don't see him dipping out early because I is is one year enough for the scouts to say, yeah, into the draft, your first round.
- 57:50SPEAKER_02: I don't see it.
- 57:51SPEAKER_02: I don't I don't see that happening.
- 57:52SPEAKER_02: It could.
- 57:53SPEAKER_02: He's got the he's got the talent.
- 57:55SPEAKER_02: That'd be dope.
- 57:56SPEAKER_02: Don't get me wrong, but I just I don't see that happening.
- 57:59SPEAKER_02: Um, I think Barron's at TechSech for two years.
- 58:02SPEAKER_02: Um, so that would uh mean um Will Hammond's at TechSech for two years at that point, which means he's he's a completely qualified candidate for the starting job after Barron's gone.
- 58:13SPEAKER_02: Um, and I think it'll be Will Hammond.
- 58:15SPEAKER_02: I think Will Hammond will be the starting quarterback, and I think Jake Strong will be his backup at that point.
- 58:19SPEAKER_02: I I don't I think Jake Strong is kind of a permanent number two.
- 58:23SPEAKER_04: Wow.
- 58:24SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 58:24SPEAKER_04: That's that's a that's a hefty opinion to have uh for a guy so early in his career.
- 58:30SPEAKER_04: It's and it's fair.
- 58:32SPEAKER_02: I'll I'll give you that.
- 58:33SPEAKER_02: It speaks more to the talent around him than him himself because Joey Maguire is no joke with recruiting, and it's the first time we've ever been able to say that about Texas Tech.
- 58:43SPEAKER_02: And Will Hammond is a jewel.
- 58:45SPEAKER_02: He is he he is truly the probably is he the first guy where getting in on her him early has really paid out?
- 58:52SPEAKER_04: Um, I don't know about that.
- 58:54SPEAKER_04: I don't know if he's the first guy in the Maguire era to be the case, but yeah.
- 58:59SPEAKER_04: I think it's uh he's one, he's definitely one of them.
- 59:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah, because um everybody wants him, especially now that he's been in the uh the elite 11.
- 59:08SPEAKER_02: So I I I I do think after two years he's he's the starting quarterback because I think he starts I think he'll be the starting quarterback for at least two years at Tex Tech as well.
- 59:15SPEAKER_04: Here's my no-miss prediction for the next four years of Texas Tech football.
- 59:20SPEAKER_04: Tyler Shuck, 2023 starter, Barron Morton, 2024 starter, Jake Strong, 2025 starter, Will Hammond takes over from there.
- 59:30SPEAKER_04: That's my that's my can't miss prediction because I do think Baron Morton is that good and four years in the system or three years in the system, whatever it is at that point, um, he's gonna display what he needs to display to be a top pick in the draft.
- 59:46SPEAKER_02: God, I I hope so, man.
- 59:48SPEAKER_02: I would love, I love, I would love for a quarterback to do so damn well that he has to leap for the NFL, or otherwise he's a moron if he doesn't.
- 59:54SPEAKER_02: I would I would love if that's the case, because that just means we had a an amazing year.
- 59:58SPEAKER_02: Um uh likely, likely means we had an amazing year.
- 1:00:01SPEAKER_02: I mean, we did see that with Patrick Mahomes as well.
- 1:00:03SPEAKER_02: So um world's just a meh year.
- 1:00:06SPEAKER_02: But Patrick Mahomes is obviously a completely different animal.
- 1:00:08SPEAKER_02: Uh that's not Patrick Mahomes.
- 1:00:10SPEAKER_02: That is not, but that is uh that that's an interesting take.
- 1:00:13SPEAKER_02: And I don't think it's a wrong take at all.
- 1:00:15SPEAKER_02: Um, and I hope I hope Jake Strong kind of shows that.
- 1:00:17SPEAKER_02: You would you see uh Hammond's redshirting as soon as he gets here?
- 1:00:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think they're all gonna redshirt as true freshmen.
- 1:00:24SPEAKER_04: And okay, and then just kind of recruit it in the next I think I think I think that 2025 year, whatever I said strong's gonna start, there will be a competition between uh a then redshirt Will Hammond and probably third year Jake Strong.
- 1:00:38SPEAKER_04: There's gonna be a competition, but I think he wins it because he's been in the system, he's been in college football longer.
- 1:00:43SPEAKER_02: Well, um Jake Jake Strong has won the the name quarterback name competition.
- 1:00:46SPEAKER_02: So that's that's a good dub.
- 1:00:48SPEAKER_04: I don't know, Barron's kind of there.
- 1:00:49SPEAKER_02: Barron, no, Barron, Barron's a great Barron Morton, that's the Barron Morton.
- 1:00:53SPEAKER_04: That is a quarterback name.
- 1:00:54SPEAKER_02: That guy came out of the womb as a quarterback.
- 1:00:57SPEAKER_02: The dude was ready.
- 1:00:58SPEAKER_02: Taylor Taylor same with Tyler Shuck.
- 1:01:00SPEAKER_02: Another, another very good quarterback.
- 1:01:02SPEAKER_02: Not as good, not as good.
- 1:01:03SPEAKER_02: Not as good, not as good, but Jake Strong's solid as well.
- 1:01:06SPEAKER_02: Like that's you need you need a good name.
- 1:01:08SPEAKER_04: Yeah, the the content you come for Talk at TechPod is ranking the quarterback names, and Baron Morton takes it with Jake Strong being number two, and then probably Shuck at three.
- 1:01:16SPEAKER_02: The most heartbreaking, amazing quarterback name to utterly bust is Jet Duffy.
- 1:01:22SPEAKER_02: That you could that is primo.
- 1:01:25SPEAKER_02: That is that is top.
- 1:01:27SPEAKER_04: He had it going for him and he completely messed it up.
- 1:01:31SPEAKER_02: Saying Texas Tech great Jet Duffy is is a word right there.
- 1:01:37SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no one will top the goat Vinny Testaverdi the third.
- 1:01:40SPEAKER_04: Uh it wasn't junior.
- 1:01:42SPEAKER_04: I think it was junior.
- 1:01:43SPEAKER_04: Oh, he might have been junior.
- 1:01:44SPEAKER_04: Was it Vinny Jr.?
- 1:01:45SPEAKER_04: I think it was Vinnie June.
- 1:01:49SPEAKER_04: Whatever.
- 1:01:49SPEAKER_04: Vinny Texas Tech legend Vinny Testaverdi.
- 1:01:52SPEAKER_04: We'll just say the game.
- 1:01:54SPEAKER_04: What a game.
- 1:01:55SPEAKER_04: Preseason.
- 1:01:56SPEAKER_04: Preseason poll came out for football.
- 1:01:59SPEAKER_04: We got two guys on the all preseason teams, uh, one Jeron Bradley and one Jalen Hutchings.
- 1:02:06SPEAKER_04: Um, first off, before we talk about where Texas Tech was in the preseason poll, did anybody get snubbed from the all Big 12 team for Texas Tech?
- 1:02:17SPEAKER_02: Uh that is a that's a tough question.
- 1:02:20SPEAKER_02: I don't think so.
- 1:02:21SPEAKER_02: Um I I think they picked, I think they they got some appropriate picks for Texas Tech.
- 1:02:25SPEAKER_02: What about you?
- 1:02:26SPEAKER_02: What do you think?
- 1:02:27SPEAKER_04: I wholeheartedly agree with you.
- 1:02:30SPEAKER_04: Um, if anything, they could have potentially put Tosh Brooks up there for running back.
- 1:02:36SPEAKER_02: My only thought too, yeah.
- 1:02:37SPEAKER_04: They could have put Austin McNamara, but again, we don't we don't punt enough to you know to do that, and it sucks because Austin is such a good punter.
- 1:02:48SPEAKER_04: But the guy from Cincinnati is also a really good punter that ended up getting named on the preseason team.
- 1:02:54SPEAKER_04: So um, and the two running backs that they named are really good.
- 1:02:56SPEAKER_04: I mean, there's a lot of good players in the Big 12.
- 1:02:58SPEAKER_04: So uh I don't I didn't I wasn't spurned by this at all.
- 1:03:01SPEAKER_04: I'm glad Bradley is getting his respect.
- 1:03:03SPEAKER_04: I'm glad Hutchings is getting his respect as well.
- 1:03:06SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, quarterbacks, you weren't gonna name Chuck as an all preseason Big 12 quarterback.
- 1:03:10SPEAKER_04: You just weren't.
- 1:03:11SPEAKER_04: Um, but yeah, no, I thought it was pretty accurate.
- 1:03:14SPEAKER_02: And I I uh hats off to Kansas.
- 1:03:17SPEAKER_02: Kansas actually has some numbers here, and they have uh the to be uh MVP of the year with uh and Jalen Daniels.
- 1:03:23SPEAKER_02: So uh good for them, man.
- 1:03:24SPEAKER_02: Hats off.
- 1:03:25SPEAKER_02: Kansas, for once since I could ever recall, is picked the finish middle of the pack of this new 14 uh 14 team uh Big 12.
- 1:03:34SPEAKER_02: And every dang near everyone gets a shout-out on this preseason uh player list.
- 1:03:40SPEAKER_02: Like nearly every school is listed.
- 1:03:42SPEAKER_02: The only one that's not is the University of Central Florida.
- 1:03:45SPEAKER_02: So that is it.
- 1:03:46SPEAKER_02: Just Central Florida.
- 1:03:48SPEAKER_02: Hate to see it for Central Florida.
- 1:03:49SPEAKER_02: I know poor Central Florida, but um, yeah, no, all no, uh it's a pretty pretty good list because I I do I do like that uh they safe and tried and true.
- 1:03:58SPEAKER_02: You're getting a Texas Tech wide receiver and J Ren Bradley on there.
- 1:04:01SPEAKER_02: So I uh an obviously great pick.
- 1:04:04SPEAKER_02: So I again I'm not upset with was anyone upset?
- 1:04:06SPEAKER_04: I didn't see any no no there wasn't there wasn't there wasn't a lot.
- 1:04:09SPEAKER_04: I think I think the most that people were talking about was McNamara, but uh again, we just don't punt enough.
- 1:04:15SPEAKER_04: It's not we're we're going for it on fourth down.
- 1:04:17SPEAKER_04: Sorry.
- 1:04:18SPEAKER_02: We play video game football at TechSech.
- 1:04:20SPEAKER_02: We never punt, we go for it on fourth down every time, baby.
- 1:04:23SPEAKER_04: No punting engage eight every time.
- 1:04:26SPEAKER_02: Uh nonstop.
- 1:04:29SPEAKER_02: Um now we gotta switch to doing nothing but two-point conversions, yeah.
- 1:04:34SPEAKER_03: Right every time.
- 1:04:36SPEAKER_03: No extra points here.
- 1:04:38SPEAKER_04: Um your Texas Tech Red Raiders have the same amount of first place preseason votes as the Oklahoma Sooners in 2023.
- 1:04:51SPEAKER_04: Did you think that was gonna happen?
- 1:04:53SPEAKER_04: I I would not predict five years ago.
- 1:04:56SPEAKER_04: Did you think that was gonna happen?
- 1:04:58SPEAKER_02: Heck to the no.
- 1:04:59SPEAKER_02: Apparently, this is the most in school history, surprisingly enough.
- 1:05:02SPEAKER_02: Can you believe that?
- 1:05:03SPEAKER_02: Like, this is the most fourth first place votes we've ever gotten.
- 1:05:06SPEAKER_04: That's a little surprising.
- 1:05:07SPEAKER_04: I would have thought 2009 we'd be up there, but again, Texas was dominant in 2009, too.
- 1:05:13SPEAKER_02: It is really surprising, but at the same time, like we have been in this conference for what 26 years now?
- 1:05:18SPEAKER_02: Can we please, for the love of God, you know, pick it up?
- 1:05:21SPEAKER_02: Like, let's let's pick it up a little bit, guys.
- 1:05:23SPEAKER_02: Come on.
- 1:05:23SPEAKER_02: Um, but no, dude, I'm really happy about that.
- 1:05:25SPEAKER_02: Number four, higher than I thought.
- 1:05:26SPEAKER_02: I thought we were gonna be about uh five or six, so it's a touch higher than I expected it to be.
- 1:05:32SPEAKER_02: I really like where this landed.
- 1:05:33SPEAKER_02: I think this is a pretty fair preseason poll, looking at it, all things considered.
- 1:05:38SPEAKER_02: Um, if anything, I I think tech stech is high, but I like that.
- 1:05:41SPEAKER_02: I I mean I'm very happy where we are, but you know, it's obviously all these riders know game, so they know football, they know ball.
- 1:05:48SPEAKER_04: So thinking thinking about who first off, who gave Oklahoma State a first place vote?
- 1:05:53SPEAKER_04: That one needs to their vote needs to be removed.
- 1:05:56SPEAKER_02: That was a YOLO move.
- 1:05:57SPEAKER_04: We could we can talk about Mike Gundy and obviously.
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_04: Obviously, he doesn't lose six games in a year.
- 1:06:02SPEAKER_04: He just doesn't.
- 1:06:03SPEAKER_04: No.
- 1:06:04SPEAKER_04: This roster by all means should be his worst team in a long time.
- 1:06:10SPEAKER_04: And yet somebody gave him a first place poll because, you know, F it.
- 1:06:15SPEAKER_04: Lobby it up, baby.
- 1:06:16SPEAKER_02: What year do they think this is?
- 1:06:18SPEAKER_02: What what roster are they looking at?
- 1:06:21unknown: Who?
- 1:06:21SPEAKER_02: Oklahoma State?
- 1:06:22SPEAKER_02: With Oklahoma State, yeah.
- 1:06:23SPEAKER_02: Like what Alan Bowman is gonna be starting quarterback.
- 1:06:26SPEAKER_02: Alan Bowman's the showman.
- 1:06:28SPEAKER_02: Alan Bowman, the showman.
- 1:06:29SPEAKER_02: I hate that we're not playing.
- 1:06:30SPEAKER_02: Okay, I'm actually happy we're not playing them.
- 1:06:31SPEAKER_02: I don't want to play against Bowman.
- 1:06:33SPEAKER_02: Um, it is heartbreaking that we think.
- 1:06:34SPEAKER_04: If we lost to Alan Bowman, I would have that would have been it.
- 1:06:38SPEAKER_02: That would have just been un unreasonable.
- 1:06:40SPEAKER_02: That would have been awesome.
- 1:06:42SPEAKER_02: That can't happen.
- 1:06:42SPEAKER_02: That cannot be.
- 1:06:43SPEAKER_04: It's kind of the same with Donovan.
- 1:06:45SPEAKER_04: If I can't lose to Donovan.
- 1:06:47SPEAKER_02: Well, we can't lose this Houston team, dude.
- 1:06:49SPEAKER_02: No.
- 1:06:49SPEAKER_02: This Houston team should blow chunks.
- 1:06:51SPEAKER_02: So Dana.
- 1:06:52SPEAKER_02: Dana.
- 1:06:53SPEAKER_02: Dana.
- 1:06:54SPEAKER_02: And let's let's let's go ahead and talk about it.
- 1:06:56SPEAKER_02: West Virginia's cooked.
- 1:06:58SPEAKER_03: They're cooked.
- 1:06:59SPEAKER_02: Dead mass.
- 1:07:00SPEAKER_03: The voters don't trust the climb.
- 1:07:02SPEAKER_02: No, it sucks.
- 1:07:03SPEAKER_02: That's a crime in the state of West Virginia.
- 1:07:05SPEAKER_02: You must trust the climb.
- 1:07:06SPEAKER_04: So is there is there a fan base that is more down bad than West Virginia right now with everything going on?
- 1:07:13SPEAKER_02: They're so out on Neil Brown.
- 1:07:15SPEAKER_02: I cannot believe the man has a job.
- 1:07:17SPEAKER_02: He is he is like he is in full-blown Matt Wells mode right now.
- 1:07:21SPEAKER_02: Like he is the fans do not like him.
- 1:07:24SPEAKER_02: They want him gone.
- 1:07:25SPEAKER_02: There's I seriously can't believe he's still there.
- 1:07:29SPEAKER_02: What is he doing there?
- 1:07:30SPEAKER_02: What is the AD doing?
- 1:07:33SPEAKER_02: Well, he paid he gave him too big a contract.
- 1:07:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I know.
- 1:07:37SPEAKER_02: I don't think that was him, though.
- 1:07:38SPEAKER_02: I think that was the AD before him.
- 1:07:39SPEAKER_02: I think yeah, signed an extension on I think it was just a mad decent year, too.
- 1:07:45SPEAKER_02: Like it was with I think it was with the Dana team.
- 1:07:47SPEAKER_04: So imagine imagine going into an athletic director position, and you have a terrible football coach who's under a brutal contract, and then you get a basketball coach who says a homophobic slur on live radio and then goes and get a DUI where he's blowing like a 20% blood alcohol level and then gets fired and is now suing for his job back.
- 1:08:10SPEAKER_04: Um, West Virginia is down very, very bad right now.
- 1:08:14SPEAKER_02: Their AD is going through it, dude.
- 1:08:15SPEAKER_02: I think I probably hasn't had a night of sleep in months.
- 1:08:18SPEAKER_04: No, we've had some stuff go on at Texas Tech.
- 1:08:21SPEAKER_04: The whole Mark Adams situation wasn't fun.
- 1:08:23SPEAKER_04: We've had some scandals with our women's programs, but good night with the Bob Huggins thing.
- 1:08:29SPEAKER_04: That is how the hell is this man suing the university claiming he never resigned when he put out a statement saying he resigned?
- 1:08:40SPEAKER_02: He he was probably a little drunk.
- 1:08:42SPEAKER_02: He was probably you know still a little uh, you know, you know that like drunk hangover, he was probably gonna be like in that state where you're still a little drunk in the morning.
- 1:08:48SPEAKER_04: This man's been on a bender for a month and then finally realized, oh, I don't have a job.
- 1:08:52SPEAKER_02: Well, he he's got he's got evidence against it.
- 1:08:54SPEAKER_02: His daughter did say that the beer cans in the car he was going to recycle.
- 1:08:59SPEAKER_02: So he's got something to work with here.
- 1:09:02SPEAKER_02: So yikes.
- 1:09:04SPEAKER_03: What what an what an awful they have handled this horribly.
- 1:09:08SPEAKER_04: I know, I know.
- 1:09:09SPEAKER_04: The whole hug there has never been a Hall of Fame coach that has tarnished his legacy quite as badly as Bob Huggins is trying to do right now.
- 1:09:17SPEAKER_02: He's he's doing a speed run on it, dude.
- 1:09:19SPEAKER_02: How fast can I get people to hate me?
- 1:09:21SPEAKER_02: A once beloved coach.
- 1:09:22SPEAKER_04: But yeah, it's it's gonna get brutal, and it's I don't know if it gets any better for West Virginia anytime soon.
- 1:09:27SPEAKER_04: They got um a grand total of 129 votes for this preseason poll with the writers.
- 1:09:35SPEAKER_04: Uh, they are ranked dead last.
- 1:09:37SPEAKER_04: Um, UT, of course, number one.
- 1:09:40SPEAKER_04: Um, it wouldn't be an off-season if Texas wasn't hyped up.
- 1:09:43SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 1:09:43SPEAKER_04: Uh Kansas State put promptly at number two, good for them.
- 1:09:47SPEAKER_04: They lost, they lost some production, but they returned a lot.
- 1:09:50SPEAKER_04: I mean, obviously Kansas State has been fantastic these last few years, so they deserve this.
- 1:09:54SPEAKER_04: I don't get the Oklahoma.
- 1:09:56SPEAKER_04: I don't get it.
- 1:09:57SPEAKER_04: Um, I know, I know they're Oklahoma.
- 1:09:59SPEAKER_04: I know they have the legacy, I know they have a uh football program that is storied and they're a blue blood of college football.
- 1:10:05SPEAKER_04: They don't deserve to be third.
- 1:10:07SPEAKER_02: It's apparently their easiest schedule in 100 years.
- 1:10:10SPEAKER_04: That's true.
- 1:10:10SPEAKER_02: That's what it is.
- 1:10:11SPEAKER_04: They did avoid a lot.
- 1:10:12SPEAKER_02: They they got some some beach balls tossed.
- 1:10:15SPEAKER_04: They were supposed to, I think they were supposed to play Georgia this year, and now that they're going to the SEC, that's not happening.
- 1:10:20SPEAKER_02: So that is I mean, like in I think like in conference, they got the easiest possible slate you could.
- 1:10:26SPEAKER_02: Apparently, apparently they had the easiest slate of all the teams in the Big 12.
- 1:10:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so like like schedule bill-wise.
- 1:10:33SPEAKER_04: They avoided some good teams.
- 1:10:34SPEAKER_02: Uh yeah, they're not they're not playing us.
- 1:10:37SPEAKER_02: Um, I think Texas is their hardest game in Oklahoma State, but if those two are oh, they play TCU.
- 1:10:43SPEAKER_02: Uh do they play Kansas State?
- 1:10:45SPEAKER_02: I don't think so.
- 1:10:45SPEAKER_02: I think they avoid Kansas State.
- 1:10:47SPEAKER_04: Let's see.
- 1:10:47SPEAKER_04: Okay, so this is their whole schedule.
- 1:10:49SPEAKER_04: Arkansas State, uh, SMU, Tulsa, uh, Cincy, uh, Iowa State, uh, Texas, UCF, Kansas, Oklahoma State, West Virginia, BYU, TCU.
- 1:11:02SPEAKER_04: They have two, uh, they have two potentially three or four games that may be tough.
- 1:11:08SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:11:08SPEAKER_02: That's a piece of cake.
- 1:11:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:11:10SPEAKER_04: Looking at their schedule, that's fair.
- 1:11:11SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 1:11:12SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 1:11:12SPEAKER_04: They should they should have a really good record.
- 1:11:14SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:11:14SPEAKER_02: So that that's why.
- 1:11:15SPEAKER_02: It's not because they're good.
- 1:11:16SPEAKER_02: It's just it's, I mean, they're gonna be good, but it's just it's just because of the schedule build.
- 1:11:20SPEAKER_02: So because otherwise, I think we'd be ahead of them, all things even.
- 1:11:23SPEAKER_04: This is this is an SEC East schedule, right here.
- 1:11:26SPEAKER_02: It's piece of cake, dude.
- 1:11:27SPEAKER_04: Like this is a Georgia schedule right here.
- 1:11:30SPEAKER_04: Yikes.
- 1:11:31SPEAKER_04: Okay, uh now I kind of get it.
- 1:11:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it makes sense now, right?
- 1:11:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:11:34SPEAKER_04: Texas Tech at four, um, TCU at five, Baylor's six, Oklahoma State seven.
- 1:11:39SPEAKER_04: I didn't think we'd be above TCU.
- 1:11:42SPEAKER_04: That there they just went to the national championship, they lost a ton, but I didn't think that preseason-wise we were gonna be above them.
- 1:11:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah, same.
- 1:11:49SPEAKER_02: Like I said, I thought we were gonna be five or six with TCU above us.
- 1:11:52SPEAKER_02: So um, yeah, it's only barely we're above TCU, but it's it's it's fair.
- 1:11:57SPEAKER_02: Um, and uh, we have we have a lot of hype around us right now, and it's just some energy going into the season, and I feel really good about looking at this list.
- 1:12:04SPEAKER_02: I love this.
- 1:12:05SPEAKER_02: I think we have a pretty good schedule ahead of us um to work with.
- 1:12:08SPEAKER_02: Um, dude, the good things could really happen this year, and I'm glad we uh we're finally talking about it, you know, starting out with the quarterbacks, hitting some uh now we're finally getting some preseason polls.
- 1:12:17SPEAKER_02: So things are getting there, dog.
- 1:12:20SPEAKER_04: Things are happening, should be exciting.
- 1:12:22SPEAKER_04: So it's fun, it's fun to get hype.
- 1:12:24SPEAKER_04: It's also a little scary to get some hype.
- 1:12:26SPEAKER_04: Yeah, but um yeah, go ahead.
- 1:12:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and just one, just uh one more thing about football, unless you know you have any other uh other to touch on here.
- 1:12:35SPEAKER_02: Uh, as I was kind of digging through these these articles, something also popped out to me was uh on here's on three's toughest games for uh for each team in the Big 12.
- 1:12:43SPEAKER_02: Apparently, ours is TCU.
- 1:12:45SPEAKER_02: So, and we are hosting TCU, and so I think that's a pretty good um uh or at least most important games.
- 1:12:53SPEAKER_02: So I think that's a pretty good thing for us to to work with here.
- 1:12:55SPEAKER_02: And I think it's probably a pretty good um a valid pick there.
- 1:12:58SPEAKER_02: I think the toughest game is gonna be UT in Austin, but yeah, um like like I just said, this is a pretty good schedule to work with.
- 1:13:06SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you got you got a lot.
- 1:13:08SPEAKER_04: If you win some of these games early, I mean if you win that Oregon game early, um, you still have to play Kansas State, you still gotta play TCU, you gotta play UT.
- 1:13:16SPEAKER_04: Um, we didn't get a great schedule draw in terms of just difficulty.
- 1:13:22SPEAKER_04: Um it's it's gonna be a grind, but hell, I mean, this is the year to have a pretty good team, huh?
- 1:13:28SPEAKER_04: Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:13:29SPEAKER_04: Let's try to do it.
- 1:13:30SPEAKER_02: Hey, those could be the crazy, this is gonna be the craziest year in the Big 12 and probably its whole history.
- 1:13:34SPEAKER_02: So um, I mean, obviously 2008 and such was crazy, but uh potentially the biggest the conferences have ever been, lots of newbies, and you know, obviously the two last year the two jerkheads leaving.
- 1:13:46SPEAKER_04: So good one, jerkhead.
- 1:13:48SPEAKER_04: Thank you.
- 1:13:49SPEAKER_04: Haven't had that one in a while.
- 1:13:50SPEAKER_02: You like jerkhead?
- 1:13:51SPEAKER_04: Uh I like jerkhead.
- 1:13:52SPEAKER_04: Jerkhead's cool.
- 1:13:53SPEAKER_04: I'm more of a jackball guy myself.
- 1:13:54SPEAKER_02: All right, yeah.
- 1:13:55SPEAKER_02: All right, jerkhead or jackball.
- 1:13:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah, right here.
- 1:13:57SPEAKER_04: It'll all work.
- 1:13:58SPEAKER_04: Uh let's uh just quickly hit on basketball.
- 1:14:00SPEAKER_04: I'm not gonna go 20 minutes on this, but um a couple new additions.
- 1:14:04SPEAKER_04: Um, Devin Cambridge, the uh senior transfer, grad transfer from Arizona State, has joined the roster.
- 1:14:11SPEAKER_04: Um, wing, uh, very athletic player.
- 1:14:14SPEAKER_04: He's kind of 6'6, 6'7 range, but he will play probably bigger than what his height shows.
- 1:14:19SPEAKER_04: Um solid option on a team that made the play-in game of the NCAA tournament.
- 1:14:24SPEAKER_04: Um, he played with Warren Washington last year, so that's important to get a little continuity there.
- 1:14:28SPEAKER_04: To potentially be a starter, I'm not sure yet.
- 1:14:31SPEAKER_04: Um, there's a lot of basketball stuff I need to really get into um before the season starts, but uh all things considered, I think this is a good ad.
- 1:14:39SPEAKER_02: No, absolutely, man.
- 1:14:40SPEAKER_02: Uh we uh is it are we still undefeated?
- 1:14:44SPEAKER_04: Uh I think so.
- 1:14:45SPEAKER_04: I think we're still undefeated on on uh transfers that actually take a visit to Texas Tech.
- 1:14:52SPEAKER_04: And uh I I think some people you know thought the guy from Vanderbilt, Tyron Lawrence, took a secret visit or something.
- 1:14:59SPEAKER_04: I don't think that ever happened, um, to be quite honest with you.
- 1:15:02SPEAKER_04: So um uh from what we've been told, everybody that takes a visit commits to Texas Tech and Grandma Castle.
- 1:15:08SPEAKER_04: So um the newest and the final roster edition.
- 1:15:12SPEAKER_04: We have a full roster now, no complaining anymore about Grandma Castle not doing anything.
- 1:15:18SPEAKER_04: Joe Tucson from West Virginia, because of the Bob Huggins situation, we have him now at Texas Tech.
- 1:15:25SPEAKER_04: He's a grad transfer, he's gonna have one year left, he's a guard, he's a veteran, he's been at uh multiple stops throughout his career.
- 1:15:33SPEAKER_04: Um the West Virginia fans.
- 1:15:35SPEAKER_04: It's just been great being on West Virginia Twitter the last several months.
- 1:15:39SPEAKER_04: Um, just the memes, the just like self-deprecating stuff is hilarious.
- 1:15:46SPEAKER_04: Um, they they started calling him dribbling Joe as soon as he left.
- 1:15:52SPEAKER_04: It's the classic move of when one of your players enters the transfer portal and you just start shitting on him.
- 1:15:58SPEAKER_04: Because nobody nobody on West Virginia's fan base really hated Joe Tucson until he started doing until he put his name in the portal.
- 1:16:06SPEAKER_04: Um although I will say he kind of messed him over by putting Pitt in his top three because he didn't even take a visit to Pitt, he didn't do anything with Pitt.
- 1:16:14SPEAKER_04: He wasn't going to Pitt, and he still put it in the top three just to like kind of spurn West Virginia fans a little bit.
- 1:16:20SPEAKER_04: Um, not a move.
- 1:16:22SPEAKER_04: Not a move.
- 1:16:22SPEAKER_04: He's a good player.
- 1:16:23SPEAKER_04: Uh, I don't know if he'll be a starter.
- 1:16:25SPEAKER_04: He might come off the bench.
- 1:16:26SPEAKER_04: He may, they may want to put him next to Pop to have another ball handler there.
- 1:16:30SPEAKER_04: Um, again, I need to do some research on these guys and really like deep dive on the basketball team, but you got some leadership and you got some guys who were on good teams last year, made the NCAA tournament.
- 1:16:41SPEAKER_04: Um, it's what Grant McCassin wanted to do, and it's what he did.
- 1:16:44SPEAKER_02: Well, I mean, John after after this happened, John Rosteen.
- 1:16:49SPEAKER_02: John, John has said that Texas Tech is a tournament team all of a sudden.
- 1:16:55SPEAKER_02: So, hey, if we make it to the tournament year one, uh under under McCasslin with uh with you know having to run on uh transfer fumes, yeah.
- 1:17:03SPEAKER_02: We are in pretty good hands.
- 1:17:05SPEAKER_02: I feel pretty good about that.
- 1:17:06SPEAKER_02: So that's I hope it's not just you know Mark Adams fumes uh just the first year to the tournament.
- 1:17:11SPEAKER_02: But I I do I do think that's obviously a promising start.
- 1:17:14SPEAKER_02: Um he's apparently he's pretty dang good at selling players to go play at Texas Tech once he gets them there.
- 1:17:18SPEAKER_02: So um yeah, he's a culture guy.
- 1:17:21SPEAKER_02: He's a culture guy.
- 1:17:22SPEAKER_02: But he a lot of fans still criticize him for being boring.
- 1:17:25SPEAKER_02: But I I'll take boring for dubs all day.
- 1:17:29SPEAKER_02: Boring beats a lot of alternatives, guys.
- 1:17:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah, at the end of the day.
- 1:17:32SPEAKER_02: So for sure.
- 1:17:33SPEAKER_02: There's a lot worse than boring.
- 1:17:36SPEAKER_02: So uh I'm sure he's not boring in the locker room, but um no, I I do get it, you know, in this in this social media realm that we are very spoiled.
- 1:17:44SPEAKER_02: We like somebody that can be very connected to us all times, but I'm very happy with what he's doing, uh, putting these pieces together.
- 1:17:51SPEAKER_02: Finally, we finally have a team.
- 1:17:52SPEAKER_04: Yeah, according to one website, we have the number four ranked transfer class in the country.
- 1:17:57SPEAKER_04: Let's go.
- 1:17:58SPEAKER_04: Which obviously we had to do because we lost some players and you needed to get those back.
- 1:18:02SPEAKER_04: And um, no, excited.
- 1:18:04SPEAKER_04: I you got your senior leadership on there.
- 1:18:07SPEAKER_04: Um, you have a star to build around in Pop Isaacs.
- 1:18:10SPEAKER_04: You have a now full coaching staff.
- 1:18:11SPEAKER_04: Let's talk about that for a second.
- 1:18:13SPEAKER_04: Um, a bunch of uh staff was announced, uh, I don't know, a couple weeks ago.
- 1:18:19SPEAKER_04: Clay Wilson, Jordan Powell, Cooper Anderson, who's actually been with Texas Tech for a while doing various roles.
- 1:18:26SPEAKER_04: Uh, Chris Nottingham, uh, and then Christian Hosley announced on the coaching staff, along with assistant Luke Barnwell.
- 1:18:33SPEAKER_04: Luke Barnwell has been this mystery assistant that was finally announced, that was kind of rumored for a while.
- 1:18:40SPEAKER_04: He is interesting because he was the head coach at Sunrise Academy in Kansas, which is a prep school known for producing NBA talent.
- 1:18:51SPEAKER_04: Um, think of a guy like Grady Dick, who, of course, was on Kansas last year, just chosen as like a top 10.
- 1:18:57SPEAKER_04: I think he was top 10 in this year's draft.
- 1:18:59SPEAKER_04: Um, he knows how to develop talent.
- 1:19:02SPEAKER_04: He's seen a lot of talent.
- 1:19:03SPEAKER_04: He potentially has a lot of connections to good high school prospects.
- 1:19:08SPEAKER_04: So this is a great hire.
- 1:19:09SPEAKER_04: I'm very excited for Luke Bornwell to be on staff um and be kind of your ace recruiter, um, along with uh, you know, your already existing guys.
- 1:19:18SPEAKER_04: I think you got a good, solid staff going here for Grantman Castling.
- 1:19:22SPEAKER_02: Or you were you disappointed with this hire?
- 1:19:24SPEAKER_04: No, no, no, no, not at all.
- 1:19:26SPEAKER_04: I wasn't, I think a lot of people were expecting um uh what was his name?
- 1:19:31SPEAKER_04: Uh yeah, McCollum, Ben McCollum.
- 1:19:33SPEAKER_04: Uh, I think Ben McCollum is current is cool where he's at, and he's waiting for that big opportunity to be a head coach um at the next level.
- 1:19:41SPEAKER_04: There were definitely talks for a long time.
- 1:19:43SPEAKER_04: Um, talks about him wanting to see the roster all the way through before he committed.
- 1:19:48SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, so you're bringing in a really good recruiter and a guy who is up to date with the trends of college basketball, uh, being from a prep school in high school, you're getting insane talent coming to Kansas every year.
- 1:20:02SPEAKER_04: Um the recruiting edge here, I think, puts him as a really good hire, but we'll just have to see.
- 1:20:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:20:09SPEAKER_02: I mean, it'll be fun to watch the high school classes start to come in now.
- 1:20:12SPEAKER_02: You know, obviously, you excuse the first year of just being, you know, a quick put some tape over the holes real quick uh with the transfers.
- 1:20:18SPEAKER_02: So I'm excited to see this thing team unfold.
- 1:20:20SPEAKER_02: So McCassin, McCasslin's a young guy, so hopefully we have a lot more years with him to watch him really, you know, build momentum with classes.
- 1:20:26SPEAKER_02: Hopefully, this is just the first big step to kind of get that truck rolling and we just kind of see all this unfold with his new with his hires and uh putting those pieces together and getting some dudes out of high school, not just rely on the portal.
- 1:20:38SPEAKER_04: No doubt.
- 1:20:38SPEAKER_04: We'll get you a full basketball preview a little closer to when that season starts in uh November, I believe, November, December.
- 1:20:44SPEAKER_02: And hopefully it'll just be a side note because football is just going so dang well.
- 1:20:48SPEAKER_04: That's true, that's true.
- 1:20:49SPEAKER_04: We're we're excited for all sports coming up.
- 1:20:52SPEAKER_04: Um, quickly touch on Texas Tech Baseball.
- 1:20:54SPEAKER_04: Um, lost a couple big names via the transfer portal that were pretty unexpected, I think.
- 1:21:00SPEAKER_04: Um, as somebody who's not super tied in to the Texas Tech baseball program and everything going on with the message boards and all that kind of stuff.
- 1:21:08SPEAKER_04: Um, Mason Molina and Hudson White both entered the transfer portal.
- 1:21:12SPEAKER_04: I know Hudson White has already committed to Arkansas.
- 1:21:15SPEAKER_04: I'm not sure.
- 1:21:15SPEAKER_04: I think there were rumors that Molina's quickly to follow to be a razor back.
- 1:21:19SPEAKER_04: Um, it sucks.
- 1:21:21SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you lost an ace pitcher, you lost a really good young player, um, catcher.
- 1:21:27SPEAKER_04: Uh this sucks.
- 1:21:28SPEAKER_04: I don't I don't know what else to say.
- 1:21:30SPEAKER_04: It's not great.
- 1:21:30SPEAKER_02: It's it's it's really strange watching baseball.
- 1:21:32SPEAKER_02: I almost feel like there's more transfers in this sport than there are in college basketball.
- 1:21:36SPEAKER_02: It really feels like things are like the basketball's top level.
- 1:21:40SPEAKER_02: You're you're right, you're right.
- 1:21:41SPEAKER_02: But baseball has to be just right behind it because I swear every offseason, we're like, holy sh, we're losing this guy too.
- 1:21:47SPEAKER_02: Or we're like, this guy's transferring out.
- 1:21:49SPEAKER_02: Um, so it's disappointing.
- 1:21:51SPEAKER_02: Um, but uh I guess you gotta trust Tadlock, you know, he's really giving you a reason not to.
- 1:21:56SPEAKER_02: So it's just disappointing to watch guys you enjoy watching go, and especially if you like a program like Arkansas, like that really bites.
- 1:22:02SPEAKER_04: But it really it I wasn't so sad about Hudson White.
- 1:22:06SPEAKER_04: I was sad about Molina because he was one of your only aces last year that really brought it game in, game out.
- 1:22:11SPEAKER_04: He was gonna provide you with some good pitching.
- 1:22:13SPEAKER_04: Uh pitching's been an issue, yeah, and pitching has been an issue, and so you're losing you got to get a guy to fill that role, and that's not gonna be easy.
- 1:22:21SPEAKER_04: So I don't know.
- 1:22:22SPEAKER_04: We'll see via transfer portal if tech picks up anybody or you know anything like that.
- 1:22:26SPEAKER_04: Baseball season is long, long ways away.
- 1:22:29SPEAKER_04: Yeah, quite away.
- 1:22:30SPEAKER_04: Yeah, quite away.
- 1:22:31SPEAKER_04: So I don't know.
- 1:22:32SPEAKER_04: We'll see how it fills out.
- 1:22:33SPEAKER_04: But this obviously stinks losing those guys.
- 1:22:36SPEAKER_02: Indeed.
- 1:22:37SPEAKER_04: All right, so downer to kind of end, but football we're excited about, yeah.
- 1:22:41SPEAKER_04: Tyler Shuck, Tyler Shuck, we're excited about very much.
- 1:22:44SPEAKER_04: We're excited about quarterback's rule.
- 1:22:46SPEAKER_04: Uh, best position in football, don't at me.
- 1:22:49SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:22:49SPEAKER_04: Um song of the week to end it off.
- 1:22:54SPEAKER_04: Um recently, Taylor Swift, who is a little, I don't know, not as well-known artist.
- 1:23:01SPEAKER_04: Yeah, pretty underground.
- 1:23:02SPEAKER_04: Pretty underground, uh, you know, not she just released her new From the Vault uh Taylor's version album, uh Speak Now, and our wives, both big Swifties, they love her Swifties.
- 1:23:18SPEAKER_04: They love her, love her, she's great.
- 1:23:20SPEAKER_04: Taylor Swift rules.
- 1:23:21SPEAKER_04: I like us and T Swift, but they like T S.
- 1:23:24SPEAKER_04: I like T Swift, they love fans, they love her.
- 1:23:28SPEAKER_04: Um, we we did see T Swift and on the Era Story, it was fantastic.
- 1:23:33SPEAKER_04: Um, really good show, a lot of money, but that's besides the point.
- 1:23:38SPEAKER_04: Uh our song of the week.
- 1:23:42SPEAKER_04: Our song of the week is both ticks from our wives on the new Speak Now album.
- 1:23:48SPEAKER_04: So, Tristy, why don't you go ahead with Annie's choice?
- 1:23:51SPEAKER_02: All right, Annie went with a legacy pick, and she somehow picked one of the few songs that's actually not a love song, you know, or about a dude.
- 1:23:59SPEAKER_02: I know, which is which is generally a tough task with Taylor Swift, you know.
- 1:24:04SPEAKER_02: Well, and especially this.
- 1:24:05SPEAKER_04: This Taylor Swift was like, I don't know, 19 or something.
- 1:24:09SPEAKER_04: Yeah, like 18, 19.
- 1:24:10SPEAKER_04: So yeah, you're getting a lot, a lot of love songs, a lot of songs about how guys suck.
- 1:24:15SPEAKER_04: Exactly.
- 1:24:16SPEAKER_02: But somehow she pulled one that didn't.
- 1:24:18SPEAKER_02: It's one the one about her bands who are on the road, you know, you know, jamming out and living life.
- 1:24:24SPEAKER_02: So the one she chose was long live.
- 1:24:27SPEAKER_05: Long live, keep the lights being you.
- 1:24:36unknown: Okay.
- 1:24:36SPEAKER_02: Taylor's version, you know, it's a pop.
- 1:24:39SPEAKER_02: It was a fine choice.
- 1:24:40SPEAKER_02: I was proud of her for picking in on uh an off the cuff that wasn't exactly an easy choice, you know?
- 1:24:45SPEAKER_02: Sure, sure.
- 1:24:46SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no, uh uh good choice.
- 1:24:48SPEAKER_04: Um, we talked about this pre-pod, but speak now is not my favorite Taylor Swift.
- 1:24:53SPEAKER_04: Agreed.
- 1:24:53SPEAKER_04: Um, it doesn't relate to me, who would have thought?
- 1:24:56SPEAKER_04: Uh Taylor Swift.
- 1:24:59SPEAKER_04: No, but at least some of it's like, I don't know, more relevant to not, I don't know.
- 1:25:05SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you're not, I'm not a 19-year-old girl, so I don't get it.
- 1:25:08SPEAKER_04: I'm sorry.
- 1:25:09SPEAKER_04: Um my Kristen's choice for Song of the Week from the Speak Now Taylor's version is I Can See You.
- 1:25:17SPEAKER_04: And this is a song from the vault of Taylor Swift.
- 1:25:22SPEAKER_05: I can see you, the love of me.
- 1:25:25SPEAKER_05: I can see you.
- 1:25:29SPEAKER_05: What would you do?
- 1:25:31SPEAKER_04: Um it's good.
- 1:25:33SPEAKER_04: I I don't, you know, it's a good song.
- 1:25:35SPEAKER_04: It's a jam.
- 1:25:37SPEAKER_04: It's how excited we are about the segment.
- 1:25:40SPEAKER_04: I did have a pretty good song of the week that I was ready to do, but then we were.
- 1:25:45SPEAKER_04: I'll do it next week.
- 1:25:46SPEAKER_04: It'll be great.
- 1:25:46SPEAKER_04: Uh if we ever record a podcast after this.
- 1:25:48SPEAKER_04: Stephen I swear.
- 1:25:54SPEAKER_04: What's your favorite Taylor Swift album?
- 1:25:56SPEAKER_04: Oh, um probably red.
- 1:25:59SPEAKER_04: Good one.
- 1:26:01SPEAKER_04: Taylor's version?
- 1:26:02SPEAKER_04: Yeah, of course.
- 1:26:03SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:26:04SPEAKER_04: You gotta, you can't, you can't have Steve Ron taking all the roads.
- 1:26:07SPEAKER_02: Amazing vault songs on that one.
- 1:26:08SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:26:09SPEAKER_02: The the Chris Stapleton one is like quickly approaching my favorite Taylor Swift song.
- 1:26:13SPEAKER_02: And that's like a legitimate country song, too.
- 1:26:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's it's fantastic.
- 1:26:17SPEAKER_02: That one that's oh well.
- 1:26:19SPEAKER_02: That's a good one.
- 1:26:20SPEAKER_04: That's anything with Stapleton, I'm all in on it.
- 1:26:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but obviously.
- 1:26:22SPEAKER_04: Um, my favorite is still the folklore era.
- 1:26:27SPEAKER_04: I think that is her best actual like singing.
- 1:26:31SPEAKER_04: Um, she doesn't try too hard in that.
- 1:26:34SPEAKER_04: She doesn't try like Taylor Swift has a fantastic low voice, I think, when she sings.
- 1:26:40SPEAKER_04: It's not like you know, when she's kind of it's more you mean lo-fi.
- 1:26:44SPEAKER_04: You don't mean like deep.
- 1:26:46SPEAKER_04: No, no, no, no.
- 1:26:47SPEAKER_04: Yeah, like lo-fi, like it, yeah.
- 1:26:48SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 1:26:49SPEAKER_04: Well, she does, she does have a pretty good deep voice when she wants to.
- 1:26:52SPEAKER_04: Um, that music is her best because she doesn't try too much, she doesn't try to hit these high notes that she can't hit or you know, have it electronically manufactured to sound a certain way.
- 1:27:02SPEAKER_04: Folklore is her best.
- 1:27:03SPEAKER_04: Evermore, I like that too.
- 1:27:05SPEAKER_04: Um, that's my favorite.
- 1:27:07SPEAKER_02: Well, I mean, I don't this this is a whole Taylor Swift segment now, but Taylor Taylor Swift is is not known for her singing.
- 1:27:13SPEAKER_02: That is not that is not her.
- 1:27:15SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 1:27:16SPEAKER_02: She's not a powerhouse, she's just a songwriter.
- 1:27:18SPEAKER_02: You know, she's just like, yeah, she's she's whenever we talk about powerhouses, you're talking like Adele and such.
- 1:27:24SPEAKER_02: That's just not her.
- 1:27:25SPEAKER_02: So yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:27:26SPEAKER_04: Fair.
- 1:27:27SPEAKER_04: All right.
- 1:27:27SPEAKER_04: Taylor Swift.
- 1:27:28SPEAKER_04: Taylor, that's her Taylor Swift segment.
- 1:27:30SPEAKER_04: Taylor Swift segment here talking to Taylor Swift, talking to T Swift.
- 1:27:34SPEAKER_04: We'll be back next week with uh probably more drama on uh Joe Alwyn and uh the guy from the 1975.
- 1:27:42SPEAKER_02: Well, I none of that makes any sense to me.
- 1:27:44SPEAKER_04: So none of that was May was a you're just you're just not a true Swifty if you don't know who this is.
- 1:27:49SPEAKER_04: So nothing more to say.
- 1:27:51SPEAKER_04: Um, thank you guys for listening.
- 1:27:53SPEAKER_04: We always appreciate it.
- 1:27:54SPEAKER_04: You can follow both me and Tristan on Twitter.

- 1:28:04SPEAKER_02: Okay, thank you.
- 1:28:05SPEAKER_02: I was about to say we're about to say you can also follow us on the threads.
- 1:28:07SPEAKER_04: No, can we stop with threads?
- 1:28:09SPEAKER_04: Because I made a threads just to, you know, because I'm I'm a shill and I feed into whatever.
- 1:28:14SPEAKER_02: We don't have to have an Instagram, and you wouldn't have made a threads.
- 1:28:17SPEAKER_04: I made an Instagram for the podcast that I haven't posted on that we somehow are continuing to get followers on for no reason.
- 1:28:24SPEAKER_04: Um I didn't want to do it, I didn't want to do it, but then there was that one night, I don't know, it was like a couple days ago, where everybody made a thread and it was like, this is it, it's happening.
- 1:28:35SPEAKER_04: No, it's not, it's not happening.
- 1:28:38SPEAKER_04: Threads might already be dead, and I'm cool with that.
- 1:28:40SPEAKER_04: Yeah, 100% cool with that.
- 1:28:42SPEAKER_04: It does Twitter's fine.
- 1:28:43SPEAKER_02: Yes, Twitter's great.
- 1:28:44SPEAKER_02: What's the beef?
- 1:28:45SPEAKER_02: I think Twitter's the ultimate social media app.
- 1:28:47SPEAKER_02: They don't like Elon.
- 1:28:49SPEAKER_04: That's why they don't like the one billionaire.
- 1:28:52SPEAKER_04: Well, y'all big Zuck guys, big Zucks.
- 1:28:55SPEAKER_02: Zuck.
- 1:28:56SPEAKER_02: I want to see the fight.

- 1:28:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah, oh, I would I I would pay-per-view that.
- 1:29:00SPEAKER_02: My money's definitely on Elon, though.
- 1:29:02SPEAKER_02: That is a brickhouse.
- 1:29:04SPEAKER_04: Zuck has been practicing some martial arts.
- 1:29:07SPEAKER_02: So well, Zuck's a reptile, so he might have some like weird doesn't bleed moves.
- 1:29:13SPEAKER_03: So Zuck doesn't bleed.
- 1:29:17SPEAKER_03: He's out here.
- 1:29:18SPEAKER_03: I would take Zuck.
- 1:29:19SPEAKER_04: Um you can follow us on Twitter at talk at tech pod.

- 1:29:37SPEAKER_04: That's it.
- 1:29:38SPEAKER_04: Follow the nation.
- 1:29:39SPEAKER_04: The nation's great.
- 1:29:40SPEAKER_04: All the all the other podcasts rambling, getting back into it.
- 1:29:43SPEAKER_04: This is the most train wreck of a tailgate talks.
- 1:29:46SPEAKER_04: It's fantastic.

- 1:30:15SPEAKER_01: I love you, and I can't wait for this journey.
- 1:30:17SPEAKER_01: I would like to thank uh Steven and Tristan.
- 1:30:20SPEAKER_01: This is incredible.
- 1:30:22SPEAKER_01: These guys have a passion and a love for this school.
