- 0:27Hey everybody, good morning from the chicken coop.
- 0:30So today we are talking about choices and cause and effect.
- 0:34And the reason we're talking about this, and I'm going to use
- 0:36the girls today as a as a metaphor for us is because we've
- 0:40had, I've, I've hinted to this throughout the last couple
- 0:43months that we've had some issues out here with a coyote,
- 0:48with a neighbor's dog, with a hawk.
- 0:51And they have been really coming in and doing some damage to the
- 0:54girls. And so far we have now lost 6
- 0:58chickens. And it is just one of those
- 1:01times where it it and two of those chickens were my girls,
- 1:07Dottie and Winnie. And they're they're
- 1:09irreplaceable in the world of their character and who they
- 1:13were as just their little souls. They were so unique.
- 1:19Winnie was the one that raised all the babies for me.
- 1:21And she was such a good Mama and she was just always on point and
- 1:25she would do anything to protect her babies.
- 1:29And shamefully, you know, she died and he didn't even take her
- 1:35body. She she was killed in the corner
- 1:37and he left her there. And in my mind, she died for no
- 1:40reason. However, today we are talking
- 1:44about cause and effect, because as I've hinted about these
- 1:48things happening, people ask me why do you let them out?
- 1:51Why do you? Why do you let them leave their
- 1:54area? So we live on a farm and they
- 1:58have the right to free range everywhere all over the farm.
- 2:01And the they have a chicken coop, they have a building and
- 2:05that building is inside of a run and that run can be shut off.
- 2:09Now even though that run has a fence that is 7 feet high all
- 2:14around it, believe it or not, my friends, coyotes can get over
- 2:18fences. In fact, I saw a picture the
- 2:20other night on a chicken group that I follow on Facebook and
- 2:24there somebody's camera had actually, because she couldn't
- 2:28believe it, she had an 8 foot fence around her coop and she
- 2:32has her. She has a trail camera and the
- 2:35trail camera caught that image of that coyote going right over
- 2:39that fence like it was nothing. I was stunned when I saw the
- 2:43picture, but we knew. We know it's happening because
- 2:46our entire property is fenced in and that coyote is coming over
- 2:50the fence. Now the point here is we are
- 2:54talking about cause and effect today and choices and cause and
- 2:58effect. So when we started this project
- 3:01and when we came out here to do this farm, I grew up in a
- 3:05farming area. And I know what happens.
- 3:08I understand things happen. Do I like it?
- 3:10No, I don't. Do I know that animals have to
- 3:12eat? Yes.
- 3:13Do I realize that the chickens are absolute prey items?
- 3:17Yes. Do I understand that they're
- 3:19going to die? Yes.
- 3:20Do I like it? No.
- 3:22That's just the nature of this process and this problem.
- 3:26And I have made the decision along with my husband that when
- 3:30we free range our animals, they're going to live the best
- 3:32life they possibly can. If something happens to them, we
- 3:37understand we're going to do everything we can to protect
- 3:39them. We have this massive dog
- 3:41Beaufort. When he's outside he then
- 3:43nothing happens to them. But he's not an outdoor dog.
- 3:47At night they are locked up tight in a fortress.
- 3:50We give them some. I mean their coop is wind rated
- 3:53to 150 miles an hour. They are taken care of in a
- 3:57grand way, but I don't keep them penned up because it's not
- 4:01healthy for their psychology. And based on what I do and
- 4:06talking to you guys all the time, you understand you can't
- 4:09be locked up all the time and have great psychology.
- 4:12It it just doesn't work. You have to be able to be
- 4:15yourself. You have to be able to go out
- 4:17all those little metaphors that come from the chicken world
- 4:20about, oh, they're all cooped up.
- 4:22Oh, there's a pecking order, You know, that is all real.
- 4:25And when you own chickens, you see how that works.
- 4:28The reason my girls are so Zen is because they're not locked
- 4:32up, because they have space, because they even when they go
- 4:35in at night, they have enough space.
- 4:38The cause and effect here is we choose to free range them.
- 4:43We choose to let them roam around.
- 4:44We choose to let them have the best chicken life they can.
- 4:48They can go like right now. I opened the gates this morning.
- 4:51I'm having this call with you. Some of them are laying eggs,
- 4:54some of them are here with me picking on the ground for their
- 4:57all their stuff. Some of them are eating yogurt
- 4:59and blueberries and raspberries this morning, and some of them
- 5:02are already off trucking out and going somewhere else to go look
- 5:06for bugs because that's what they like to do.
- 5:08The free Rangers that love to leave, they take off
- 5:11immediately. The cause is, is that I just
- 5:16want them to be so happy. I want them to be able to leave
- 5:21here and go and do whatever they they want to do.
- 5:24But everything comes with effects, right?
- 5:26Everything comes with effects. So if something comes down from
- 5:29the sky, it's highly unlikely that some of them are not going
- 5:34to get taken. And it's something that we just
- 5:36have to live with. And sometimes in life, this is
- 5:39what you have to do. Sometimes you have to know if
- 5:42you're going to take risks and you're going to try to build a
- 5:44business, you're going to have failures.
- 5:45It's part of the process. If you're going to paint, you're
- 5:49going to have canvases that suck.
- 5:51If you're going to draw, you're going to have ideas that you
- 5:52crumble up and throw away. If you're going to write, you're
- 5:54going to write stories and throw stuff away.
- 5:56I wrote the bus book three times before I actually put it out
- 5:59there completely from beginning to end and change the concept
- 6:02every time. So my point here is there is
- 6:06always an effect from something that you start in that process
- 6:10and you've got to separate your yourself from the fact that it's
- 6:15it's always got to be good because it doesn't.
- 6:17Sometimes things happen that are not great, but they they take
- 6:22place because it's the right thing to do.
- 6:24And I do this for the girls because it's the right things to
- 6:27do. I don't want them to have to
- 6:28suffer to be safe. Do you always want to live in
- 6:33safety? To a certain extent, in some
- 6:36ways, yes. But in others, is that always
- 6:39what we want? I don't know.
- 6:40It's a big question for contemplation.
- 6:42So I thought I'd throw it out there with you guys and see what
- 6:45you have to say about that. Because I opt for them having
- 6:48the best life and although it's sad, sometimes I want them to be
- 6:53happy. So I hope you guys have a
- 6:56blessed, happy day and I will see you all tomorrow.
- 6:59Bye.
