- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, your home for
- 0:06Speaker 1: deer hunting news, stories and strategies, and now your host,
- 0:11Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon. Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast. I'm
- 0:16Speaker 1: your host, Mark Kenyan. This episode number one, and today
- 0:21Speaker 1: on the show, Dan and I are doing a deep
- 0:23Speaker 1: dive into our own two thousand seventeen deer hunting seasons
- 0:26Speaker 1: to discuss the mistakes we made, the lessons we learned,
- 0:29Speaker 1: and the areas were hoping to improve on in two
- 0:32Speaker 1: thousand eighteen. Hey, guys, before we get into the episode,
- 0:49Speaker 1: I want to point out two quick things. First, for
- 0:52Speaker 1: some reason, my microphone on this recording was acting up
- 0:56Speaker 1: and it resulted in lower quality audio on my end,
- 0:59Speaker 1: So apologies for that in advance. And secondly, I just
- 1:03Speaker 1: want to mention here in this intro, as you just heard,
- 1:07Speaker 1: we're going to be discussing me in Dance two thousand
- 1:10Speaker 1: seventeen seasons and reviewing what we did right and what
- 1:14Speaker 1: we did wrong. So you might be asking yourself, though,
- 1:16Speaker 1: how is this, How is this valuable to me the listener? Well,
- 1:19Speaker 1: I think at the surface level you can learn something
- 1:22Speaker 1: here from the specific examples we bring up, such as
- 1:25Speaker 1: the unique hunting decisions or situations or challenges that we
- 1:29Speaker 1: encountered throughout the season that we're talk about here over
- 1:31Speaker 1: the next hour or so. So you can learn something
- 1:33Speaker 1: from those actual hunting elements, but just as important, I
- 1:37Speaker 1: think you can learn something about the process we went
- 1:40Speaker 1: through here, the actual act of reflecting on the past
- 1:43Speaker 1: hunting season. Our goals are expectations, are steps towards those goals,
- 1:47Speaker 1: are failings towards those goals. And I think and I
- 1:51Speaker 1: hope that by listening to us discuss these things and
- 1:53Speaker 1: then thinking about how you could try this yourself, you
- 1:56Speaker 1: can actually learn a little bit about how to better
- 1:59Speaker 1: review your own season. And maybe you'll pick up some
- 2:02Speaker 1: good ideas, maybe you'll know some things that you don't
- 2:04Speaker 1: want to do. Um Either way, i'd encourage you to
- 2:07Speaker 1: listen to this conversation through that lens of your own season,
- 2:11Speaker 1: and then try doing some reflection like this on your
- 2:13Speaker 1: own in the coming days. I hope that you're gonna
- 2:16Speaker 1: find that to be a valuable exercise. And so with
- 2:20Speaker 1: all that said, enough of me. Let's get right into it,
- 2:25Speaker 1: all right, folks. Welcome back to another episode of the
- 2:28Speaker 1: Wired to Hunt podcast, brought to you by sick gear
- 2:33Speaker 1: and today it is just myself and Mr Dan Johnson
- 2:38Speaker 1: there over in Iowa. And today what I wanted us
- 2:42Speaker 1: to do, Dan, if you're up for this, is I
- 2:46Speaker 1: want to look back at two thousand seventeen. You know,
- 2:48Speaker 1: we are now in the first week or two of
- 2:51Speaker 1: January two eighteen, and the hunting season is behind us.
- 2:56Speaker 1: So I want to take a look at all the
- 2:59Speaker 1: mistake because we made. I want to take a look
- 3:01Speaker 1: at all the things that maybe we did well, um,
- 3:04Speaker 1: the lessons we learned. UM. I don't know if you
- 3:07Speaker 1: do this like I do, But as I get towards
- 3:10Speaker 1: the end of the season, I spent a lot of
- 3:12Speaker 1: time looking back and thinking through and kind of reflecting
- 3:15Speaker 1: on you know, were there any themes that that I
- 3:18Speaker 1: kind of noticed from the season. Was there any big
- 3:20Speaker 1: things that should have done differently? Or Um? I don't know.
- 3:23Speaker 1: I just spent a lot of time thinking back on
- 3:25Speaker 1: those things. So I kind of want to do that
- 3:27Speaker 1: on air, I suppose, because especially for me this year,
- 3:30Speaker 1: I felt like this was just anyway. I mean, I've
- 3:33Speaker 1: said it before, but this was a very challenging season.
- 3:35Speaker 1: This was a frustrating season. Um, So I want to
- 3:39Speaker 1: make sure that I'm learning from this. Um. You know,
- 3:42Speaker 1: there's I think in any time you fail or come
- 3:45Speaker 1: up against something tough, there's an opportunity to grow from that.
- 3:48Speaker 1: So I should, as how better grow from this season
- 3:51Speaker 1: because I didn't get anything else from it. So that's
- 3:54Speaker 1: that's what I want to try to do today, is
- 3:56Speaker 1: it's kind of verbalize some of that and talk through
- 3:58Speaker 1: some of those things that that we learned, um, and
- 4:01Speaker 1: and hopefully that then provides, you know, like an illustration
- 4:03Speaker 1: for everyone listening, UM. So then maybe they can learn
- 4:06Speaker 1: from some of the good things we did some of
- 4:08Speaker 1: the bad things we did, um, and apply that to
- 4:11Speaker 1: their own, you know, future seasons and all that. So,
- 4:15Speaker 1: but I guess before we get into the meat of it,
- 4:18Speaker 1: do you ever anything new on the leather side of things?
- 4:21Speaker 1: Do you have any Dad's stories. I gotta tell you
- 4:25Speaker 1: better take advantage of these now, Dan, because in a
- 4:28Speaker 1: few weeks you will not be the only one that
- 4:32Speaker 1: can tell dad stories. Dude. I'm actually looking forward to
- 4:36Speaker 1: your dad's stories just like just to compare how your
- 4:41Speaker 1: dad stories and my dad stories are. Because I will
- 4:46Speaker 1: tell you this, I will tell you this, and I
- 4:47Speaker 1: always you know, I I joke and a bit about
- 4:49Speaker 1: my kids quite a bit. But I want to tell
- 4:53Speaker 1: you this is gonna be a little sentimental. And I
- 4:56Speaker 1: don't I don't want to change the tone of the website,
- 4:59Speaker 1: but you know I'm gonna I'm going to anyway. But
- 5:02Speaker 1: you have you have these you have these blinders on
- 5:07Speaker 1: almost when you know, like how important what what is
- 5:12Speaker 1: important in life? Before a kid is born? Right, And
- 5:16Speaker 1: I've always thought of what this other deer hunter told me.
- 5:20Speaker 1: He's a hardcore deer hunter, and he told he told
- 5:23Speaker 1: me this, and it was when I was when my
- 5:26Speaker 1: wife was pregnant with my daughter, my my firstborn, so
- 5:30Speaker 1: at that time I didn't have any kids. And he
- 5:31Speaker 1: says to me, two things are gonna happen, Like you're
- 5:34Speaker 1: gonna perspective in life is going to change, like what
- 5:38Speaker 1: what's important is going to change. And you will not
- 5:42Speaker 1: realize how much your parents loved you until the day
- 5:46Speaker 1: that you have your kid. And the day that my
- 5:51Speaker 1: daughter was born, and it happened really fast. They pulled
- 5:57Speaker 1: her out of my wife. They set her on my
- 5:58Speaker 1: wife's chest and she looked at me with these wide
- 6:01Speaker 1: open eyes and she smiled. I swear to guy. She
- 6:04Speaker 1: smiled and you know, babies can't smile at that. That's
- 6:08Speaker 1: what it looked like, right, And I had this overwhelming
- 6:14Speaker 1: feeling come over me that at that moment in my life,
- 6:19Speaker 1: all of my priorities changed, all of you know, like
- 6:24Speaker 1: what I thought was important in life changed, who how
- 6:28Speaker 1: much I thought people loved me and how much I
- 6:31Speaker 1: love people changed, And it just was like this, this
- 6:35Speaker 1: this tectonic shift in life. And uh, you know, as
- 6:40Speaker 1: much as I like today, my kid, my son is
- 6:44Speaker 1: in the other room, which mac mac he got he
- 6:48Speaker 1: got kicked on some ladies and gentlemen. Yep, he got
- 6:51Speaker 1: kicked out of daycare today for hitting and pushing. So
- 6:55Speaker 1: I had I had to leave work and that's why
- 6:58Speaker 1: we're recording this podcast now with him in the other room.
- 7:02Speaker 1: Hopefully he doesn't interrupt. But you know, like as much
- 7:06Speaker 1: as as much as I talked ship all my kids,
- 7:08Speaker 1: I love them to death and it's it's just hashtag
- 7:12Speaker 1: dead life. Man. You you mentioned that moment when your
- 7:16Speaker 1: daughter arrived in the world, and how like that was
- 7:19Speaker 1: a beautiful moment from you. Um, I just had my
- 7:22Speaker 1: quote unquote diaper party kind of deal this past weekend
- 7:26Speaker 1: so you know, a bunch of your buddies get together
- 7:28Speaker 1: and you do something, and then they bring a bunch
- 7:30Speaker 1: of diapers. Um, kind of get just set up a
- 7:32Speaker 1: little bit. So we spent the day ice fishing and
- 7:35Speaker 1: rabbit hunting and shooting longbows and guns and stuff like that. Um.
- 7:40Speaker 1: We spent the whole day doing that. And then in
- 7:42Speaker 1: the evenings, the wives met up with us at one
- 7:44Speaker 1: of my buddies houses and we all, you know, we
- 7:46Speaker 1: all got together. So that was a good time, really
- 7:48Speaker 1: good time. Um. But that night, you know, I was
- 7:50Speaker 1: with all these couples and they all had kids except
- 7:52Speaker 1: for me. Um In Further Further was there and he
- 7:55Speaker 1: doesn't have any kids yet. Um. But all they basically
- 7:58Speaker 1: did was tell like horror story is about babies. And
- 8:02Speaker 1: one of the things I kept saying is that when
- 8:04Speaker 1: it comes out right away, they were saying, it is
- 8:07Speaker 1: not the most beautiful thing. They're saying, it's pretty disgusting.
- 8:11Speaker 1: It doesn't look like the cute little gerber baby you're
- 8:13Speaker 1: seeing commercials, and that it's covered in like white stuff
- 8:17Speaker 1: and cone headed. And I mean, I don't know if
- 8:22Speaker 1: my little dude is going to be smiling at me.
- 8:24Speaker 1: I got a feeling he's gonna come out looking like
- 8:27Speaker 1: I don't know, something alien. Yeah, I can't go. My
- 8:32Speaker 1: daughter she came out, and you know, I'm I'm that
- 8:35Speaker 1: I was that dad who I got. You know, my
- 8:38Speaker 1: wife had one leg on my arm and you know
- 8:40Speaker 1: I was leaning an into her when she started pushing.
- 8:42Speaker 1: My daughter was born. It was a very beautiful thing.
- 8:46Speaker 1: You know, without going into too much detail, right, we
- 8:48Speaker 1: all know where babies come from, but you know it
- 8:50Speaker 1: was beautiful, Like I washed it and I was just like,
- 8:52Speaker 1: oh my god, it's a birth. Now. I was in
- 8:54Speaker 1: the same exact position when my nine percentile head measurement
- 8:59Speaker 1: son came out, and that was a completely different experience
- 9:04Speaker 1: where I don't know if you've ever seen the movie
- 9:07Speaker 1: Um where where Jim Carey is inside of a rhinoceros
- 9:12Speaker 1: and the fan breaks and he has to come out
- 9:15Speaker 1: the back end of this fake rhinoceros is what it was.
- 9:19Speaker 1: I mean, it was like just like the predator met like, oh,
- 9:23Speaker 1: just like something coming out of the ground. Like I
- 9:26Speaker 1: was like, it was gross, but that's life, right, It's
- 9:30Speaker 1: not all beautiful. My wife is convinced that I'm going
- 9:33Speaker 1: to pass out during that portion of the event. If
- 9:36Speaker 1: I see that your adrenaline is pumping, Oh man, I
- 9:40Speaker 1: think I want to stay top side. I think that's
- 9:42Speaker 1: if you can. If you can gut a deer without
- 9:45Speaker 1: passing out, then you can witness a birth. Al Right,
- 9:48Speaker 1: well I can do that. I can't believe I just
- 9:51Speaker 1: compared the two things. But don't you hear that she
- 9:57Speaker 1: doesn't listen to this podcast anyway? No, definitely, Yeah, man,
- 10:00Speaker 1: it's coming up just a few more weeks, more weeks,
- 10:04Speaker 1: and that's happening. And that's It's kind of an interesting
- 10:07Speaker 1: lens that I've been looking through this whole review of
- 10:11Speaker 1: the past year through because I'm looking back at this
- 10:13Speaker 1: and this is my last year and my last hunting
- 10:17Speaker 1: season to my last adventure season pre baby. Um, so
- 10:22Speaker 1: I'm kind of looking at everything within this weird place,
- 10:26Speaker 1: like I know things are going to change. I don't
- 10:28Speaker 1: know exactly how they're going to change. I know there's
- 10:31Speaker 1: gonna be all these crazy things happening. I don't really
- 10:34Speaker 1: know how handle those or how they're going to impact
- 10:37Speaker 1: all the other things I've got going on in my life.
- 10:39Speaker 1: I don't I know they're going to change how much
- 10:41Speaker 1: I care about those other things, but I don't know
- 10:43Speaker 1: what that actually looks like and it feels like in
- 10:45Speaker 1: real life. So I'm in this weird in between point
- 10:48Speaker 1: right now that I'm just like, I just I'm just ready.
- 10:55Speaker 1: I guess I'm just ready to get going with this
- 10:58Speaker 1: because the in between stage, the unknown is killing me
- 11:01Speaker 1: and I'm just ready to to dive in and figure
- 11:03Speaker 1: things out and start moving forward um on on a
- 11:07Speaker 1: whole lot of things. But baby baby is definitely a
- 11:10Speaker 1: big part of that. So man, it's gonna be an
- 11:13Speaker 1: interesting year. That's that is for certain. It's gonna be
- 11:15Speaker 1: very different year, so absolutely, man, and it's gonna be
- 11:20Speaker 1: It might be interesting for people to have kids, but
- 11:22Speaker 1: we're gonna lose Like the other forty percent of our
- 11:24Speaker 1: audience that doesn't have kids would be so sick of
- 11:27Speaker 1: us talking about babies. Dude. It's just that's part of life, right,
- 11:31Speaker 1: I mean, don't get me wrong. I mean, this can
- 11:35Speaker 1: this this podcast has a great ton of a great
- 11:39Speaker 1: amount of really really good content. And if you know
- 11:44Speaker 1: you think that we talk about our kids too much,
- 11:46Speaker 1: just wait till Mark has his kid. Man, We're gonna
- 11:48Speaker 1: talk about him a whole lot more. And as and
- 11:51Speaker 1: as I start to get my kids deeper involved into hunting,
- 11:56Speaker 1: you know, taking them out and actually getting them to
- 11:59Speaker 1: experience because my daughter is going to be that age
- 12:01Speaker 1: this upcoming season, you know, we're gonna be talking about
- 12:04Speaker 1: kids more. I can't talk about what I don't know,
- 12:07Speaker 1: you know, I talk I know my family, and that's
- 12:10Speaker 1: that's when I talk about Yeah, man, And I think,
- 12:12Speaker 1: you know, I think people hopefully, um, that will be
- 12:15Speaker 1: something that people can foul along with. And I think
- 12:20Speaker 1: everyone will be going through different stages that Like everyone,
- 12:23Speaker 1: we all go through different phases in our lives, right
- 12:25Speaker 1: And there are listeners probably that are ahead of us,
- 12:28Speaker 1: and their listeners that are behind us. And there are
- 12:30Speaker 1: listeners that are maybe right on the same part of
- 12:33Speaker 1: the timeline as we are, that can kind of follow
- 12:36Speaker 1: along from their own perspective. Um. And so either you'll
- 12:39Speaker 1: get to learn something about what to expect, you'll be
- 12:42Speaker 1: able to relate to someone who's dealing something but that
- 12:44Speaker 1: you're dealing with right now, or maybe you can look
- 12:47Speaker 1: back on something you used to have to deal with
- 12:49Speaker 1: and either laugh at us or or enjoy it. Um.
- 12:53Speaker 1: I don't know what, but man, it'll be interesting. So baby, baby,
- 13:00Speaker 1: just countdown. We'll be starting here very soon. It could
- 13:02Speaker 1: be anytime now really, um, but probably you know, two
- 13:06Speaker 1: or three more weeks. But she thirty seven weeks six okay, Um,
- 13:13Speaker 1: but she just seems like, I don't know. We we
- 13:15Speaker 1: just have this idea and I think I've said this before.
- 13:18Speaker 1: We just had this feeling that it's going to come early. Um.
- 13:21Speaker 1: And she is just big and uncomfortable and just ready
- 13:26Speaker 1: to be done with it. So has she has? She said,
- 13:31Speaker 1: look at you with all sorts of seriousness, looked at
- 13:35Speaker 1: you straight in the eyes, and told you to go
- 13:37Speaker 1: f yourself. Yet in so many words, yeah, she like,
- 13:41Speaker 1: you did this to me right right? Well, when let
- 13:45Speaker 1: me know, when she looks you dead in the eyes
- 13:47Speaker 1: and she uses those exact words, then you know she's
- 13:52Speaker 1: had enough. Now what's happening? Yeah? Yeah, so hashtag dead life? Right? Um?
- 14:00Speaker 1: Anything else interesting in your world? Otherwise? Outside of that, dude,
- 14:03Speaker 1: I want to talk about dear. Before we do that,
- 14:06Speaker 1: the let's take a quick second to hear our sick
- 14:10Speaker 1: story of the day. For this week's Sitka story, we're
- 14:14Speaker 1: joined by Don v Dash, who tells us about an
- 14:16Speaker 1: eye opening encounter he had in southeastern Kansas. Well Spencer,
- 14:25Speaker 1: It's an interesting UH. The sickest stories have been intriguing
- 14:31Speaker 1: to me. I have a follower podcast and and I've
- 14:34Speaker 1: had a couple UH defining moments in UH in my
- 14:40Speaker 1: own career, and one really was an eye opener for me.
- 14:44Speaker 1: I'm back in two thousand and fifteen. I had a
- 14:47Speaker 1: particularly large book that I was after in Kansas, probably
- 14:50Speaker 1: the biggest one I had ever chased, and had a
- 14:53Speaker 1: lot of camera pictures of him, and UH, I was
- 14:56Speaker 1: really waiting him out and got down to Kansas, just
- 14:59Speaker 1: done a great cold front in November and got into
- 15:04Speaker 1: where I thought he would be and share enough, around
- 15:08Speaker 1: thirty am, he comes walking in UH into the field
- 15:12Speaker 1: I was. I was sitting in with a few dos
- 15:16Speaker 1: and UH, I snort wheezed at him, just trying to
- 15:20Speaker 1: get aggressive, and he took one look over at me
- 15:23Speaker 1: and just came charging in like a ball. UH stopped
- 15:27Speaker 1: staring at me head on at ten yards eyeball to eyeballs.
- 15:33Speaker 1: Is one of those moments where you know your camouflage
- 15:36Speaker 1: really gets tested. And and right about then he looked
- 15:40Speaker 1: away and took one step and and that that was
- 15:43Speaker 1: one of his last and for me, that was really
- 15:46Speaker 1: one of those moments where you wonder, you know, how
- 15:51Speaker 1: things are working, and and I had the wind in
- 15:54Speaker 1: my face and I just knew at that time that, um,
- 15:58Speaker 1: the camouflage was working for me. Uh. You know, as hunters,
- 16:02Speaker 1: I think we always have questions, you know, is my
- 16:05Speaker 1: whin good? Is is my is my setup good? Is
- 16:08Speaker 1: is my equipment solid? And in that moment, I knew
- 16:13Speaker 1: that all that was clicking on Dawn's hunt, which was
- 16:17Speaker 1: a bitterly cold sit He was wearing Sitka's phonetic system.
- 16:21Speaker 1: If you'd like to create a Sitka story of your own,
- 16:23Speaker 1: or to learn more about Sitka's technical hunting apparel, visit
- 16:27Speaker 1: sitka gear dot com. Dude, I want to talk about
- 16:31Speaker 1: Dear and talk about all right game. I think I
- 16:33Speaker 1: think there's a lot to talk about because we've kind
- 16:35Speaker 1: of throughout the year, we've kind of talked about things
- 16:38Speaker 1: as they have been happening, but we never have done
- 16:41Speaker 1: a real serious kind of analysis of the whole thing.
- 16:44Speaker 1: So I think there's a lot to talk about here. Um,
- 16:48Speaker 1: And I don't really know what the right way to
- 16:49Speaker 1: go about it is. I mean, we could go through
- 16:53Speaker 1: we go through and talk through our seasons individually from
- 16:57Speaker 1: beginning to end in a couple of high level things,
- 16:59Speaker 1: or we could talk through and kind of break them
- 17:01Speaker 1: down by portion. Um. I don't know. I mean, how
- 17:06Speaker 1: much how much do you have? Dan? Is there a
- 17:09Speaker 1: lot that you came out of this season having learned
- 17:11Speaker 1: or having felt good about or having wanted to change
- 17:14Speaker 1: or do you feel like this is one of those
- 17:15Speaker 1: years that kind of flew by and you don't know
- 17:17Speaker 1: what she took from it yet? I mean, where are
- 17:19Speaker 1: you from. I think that you're missing something if you
- 17:23Speaker 1: can't take away some things that you would do differently
- 17:27Speaker 1: on a hunting season, right. I mean, that's the way
- 17:30Speaker 1: I look at it. There's always something that I feel
- 17:32Speaker 1: I could do different, um, in order to uh, you know,
- 17:37Speaker 1: have a different outcome. You know, I don't want to
- 17:39Speaker 1: change the outcome, but next year, I don't want the
- 17:42Speaker 1: same outcome, you know what I mean. So there's always
- 17:45Speaker 1: there's always some kind of change that you can make
- 17:49Speaker 1: to have that quote unquote perfect season that doesn't exist,
- 17:53Speaker 1: if that makes sense. Okay, So before the season, if
- 17:56Speaker 1: we were talking in September on a scale of one
- 17:59Speaker 1: to ten and being the best. How would you rate
- 18:02Speaker 1: your expectations for the season coming into it? Well, based
- 18:05Speaker 1: off trail cameras and information. Man, I'll tell you what
- 18:09Speaker 1: the farm, Like I said, the farm that I do
- 18:12Speaker 1: most of my hunting on was absolutely loaded, and I
- 18:17Speaker 1: was just I was very happy with the amount of
- 18:22Speaker 1: mature deer that were on the property. So I had
- 18:25Speaker 1: really good expectations going into into that season. This up
- 18:29Speaker 1: this season, so one through ten. I'm gonna say eight
- 18:34Speaker 1: to nine to be honest with you. And then now
- 18:38Speaker 1: the season is pretty much done. How would you look
- 18:41Speaker 1: back at the season and say this season went as
- 18:44Speaker 1: far as meeting those expectations or goals you had. Well,
- 18:48Speaker 1: I tell you what, um, I walked away from and
- 18:53Speaker 1: we've talked about this before. We I walked away from
- 18:56Speaker 1: this season with h harvest. And you know, just to
- 19:03Speaker 1: recap that, you know how that hunt played out where
- 19:08Speaker 1: that harvest, you know, it was really thick, it was
- 19:11Speaker 1: really nasty. Um. I I thought the buck that was
- 19:14Speaker 1: coming through was mature. I had a very short window
- 19:17Speaker 1: to harvest him. I shot him. And then as I
- 19:20Speaker 1: got down and walked up to this buck, it wasn't
- 19:22Speaker 1: the buck that I thought he was when I you know,
- 19:25Speaker 1: when I was in the tree, and you know, I'm
- 19:28Speaker 1: not disappointed in it, and I think it would be
- 19:31Speaker 1: unfair to the animal if I said, oh, man, I
- 19:35Speaker 1: wish I never would have shot that buck, because you know,
- 19:39Speaker 1: if I could do it over again, yeah, I probably
- 19:41Speaker 1: would have passed him. But I you don't have Sometimes
- 19:43Speaker 1: you don't have the opportunity to do those things. So
- 19:46Speaker 1: I did what I thought was right at the time,
- 19:49Speaker 1: and I was very happy with the end result. I mean,
- 19:52Speaker 1: it was a it's a great buck. It was immature.
- 19:55Speaker 1: It was not mature. Uh, And that's something that I
- 19:58Speaker 1: need to do a better job at this upcoming year.
- 20:02Speaker 1: That's one of the takeaways is to make sure I
- 20:05Speaker 1: identify some characteristics of these dear differently. And I think
- 20:12Speaker 1: I got into this little moment there where I was
- 20:15Speaker 1: like blackout kill mode instead of saying, mmm, I'm okay
- 20:22Speaker 1: with eating my tag, you know, like, because there's that
- 20:24Speaker 1: there's that there's that fine line, right, So do you
- 20:27Speaker 1: think it was And it sounds like I think that's
- 20:28Speaker 1: what you just said, But are you saying that you
- 20:31Speaker 1: think you need to get better at learning to identify
- 20:34Speaker 1: the characteristics of a mature, dear, so you are more
- 20:36Speaker 1: accurate in your aging or is it more so getting
- 20:39Speaker 1: your head right in the moment so you actually pay
- 20:41Speaker 1: attention to the things you know versus blackout kill mode.
- 20:45Speaker 1: I think it was it's this the ladder of the
- 20:48Speaker 1: two UM, because although I say I had a very
- 20:52Speaker 1: short period of time, you know what what keeps you
- 20:57Speaker 1: or what makes you better, is to be able to
- 21:00Speaker 1: make those decisions in shorter time periods. And I, instead
- 21:05Speaker 1: of taking that extra half second two seconds two observe,
- 21:13Speaker 1: I went into that kill mode. Right. So I think
- 21:16Speaker 1: that next year, if the same type of scenario UM
- 21:22Speaker 1: presents itself, I instead of you know, turning that that
- 21:27Speaker 1: switch on saying kill not kill, I will probably leave
- 21:31Speaker 1: it at not kill as opposed to kill and and
- 21:35Speaker 1: you know, unless it's overwhelming, you know what I mean. Yeah,
- 21:40Speaker 1: I got a friend UM who has dealt with a
- 21:44Speaker 1: challenge similar to that, but he has the opposite side
- 21:47Speaker 1: where he goes into it. He's become so picky and
- 21:51Speaker 1: so like UM focused on that. Well, I don't know
- 21:56Speaker 1: if it's he. He has the same issue where he
- 21:59Speaker 1: will him and Hall and him and haunt and him
- 22:01Speaker 1: and Hall over a buck for such a long period
- 22:03Speaker 1: of time that then he doesn't get himself in the
- 22:06Speaker 1: right mind mindset to make a good kill. So he's
- 22:09Speaker 1: had a couple of examples where he's been hemming and
- 22:11Speaker 1: haun and thinking and going back and forth on a
- 22:13Speaker 1: buck too many times, and then you know, ends up
- 22:16Speaker 1: not getting a great shot or rushing the shot, or
- 22:19Speaker 1: something along along those lines. So his one of the
- 22:22Speaker 1: more recent things I remember him saying to me about
- 22:24Speaker 1: this was that kind of like you just said, he
- 22:26Speaker 1: now believes that either it's an instant yes, or it's
- 22:29Speaker 1: If it's not an instant yes, then it's a no.
- 22:31Speaker 1: I'm not going to shoot something that I don't instantly know. Obviously,
- 22:34Speaker 1: this is a mature buck I want to shoot if
- 22:36Speaker 1: it's one of those, and maybe's I shouldn't even sit
- 22:39Speaker 1: in him and haunt about it. Just it's a no then,
- 22:43Speaker 1: right right. And I'll tell you what I think. And
- 22:48Speaker 1: and this is going to tie into I think your
- 22:50Speaker 1: season and putting all your eggs in one basket for
- 22:54Speaker 1: a particular buck. I did that for several years, chasing
- 22:59Speaker 1: one particular or buck, and I ate my tag several
- 23:02Speaker 1: years um out of the last ten you know, going
- 23:06Speaker 1: for a one particular buck and to a higher age class,
- 23:11Speaker 1: a very high standard age class. And I think that
- 23:16Speaker 1: has faded away over the last let me, let me
- 23:19Speaker 1: just say, uh, five years maybe and maybe five or
- 23:24Speaker 1: six years, and I think I'm kind of going back
- 23:27Speaker 1: to that get into a kill mode instead of identifying
- 23:33Speaker 1: maturity and shooting mature you know, like a mature animal
- 23:37Speaker 1: in those going back to that that light switch moment
- 23:40Speaker 1: kill pass, you know what I mean. So I need
- 23:44Speaker 1: to do a better job of identifying that. Yeah, I mean,
- 23:47Speaker 1: it's definitely one of those things that's easier said than done.
- 23:49Speaker 1: I mean, it's very easy to say from the computer
- 23:53Speaker 1: desk here or sitting there in the off season talking
- 23:56Speaker 1: with your buddies, Oh yeah, I know what a mature
- 23:58Speaker 1: buck looks like. I can make that decision easily in
- 24:00Speaker 1: the woods. But when something like this shows up out
- 24:03Speaker 1: of nowhere, and you've got a few seconds to make
- 24:06Speaker 1: a decision, and you've been sitting in that tree for
- 24:08Speaker 1: ten straight hours, for day after day after day, or
- 24:11Speaker 1: whatever it might be, and you're cold and you're tired,
- 24:13Speaker 1: and you've been just dying to see a good mature buck,
- 24:16Speaker 1: and all of a sudden something comes through that gets
- 24:18Speaker 1: your heart pumping. I mean, it is very understandable that
- 24:22Speaker 1: you might get a little fired up and and get
- 24:25Speaker 1: sugar happy and and and I don't know, is there
- 24:28Speaker 1: is there something wrong with that? If you got excited
- 24:31Speaker 1: in a moment um by that deer you saw and
- 24:35Speaker 1: you were thrilled by that opportunity and you took that shot,
- 24:40Speaker 1: was that necessarily the worst in the world. I don't know.
- 24:43Speaker 1: I understand. I mean, I understand what you're saying. And
- 24:46Speaker 1: it didn't it wasn't your goal, and that's something you
- 24:49Speaker 1: want to get better at. But I don't know if
- 24:52Speaker 1: it's um that goes back to the whole deeper slew
- 24:56Speaker 1: of questions than I guess about about our roles and
- 24:58Speaker 1: stuff going in the season. But yeah, I mean, you know,
- 25:01Speaker 1: some people say, some people say, you know, they say,
- 25:06Speaker 1: one second mark in the chair. No, you gotta go
- 25:13Speaker 1: in the living room, Bubba, You're gonna be quiet. So
- 25:18Speaker 1: I'm sorry. Hashtag dad life right, So um, you know,
- 25:25Speaker 1: some people say, you know, don't don't shoot a buck.
- 25:28Speaker 1: You know, don't pass a buck that you would shoot
- 25:30Speaker 1: on the last day of the season. I don't know
- 25:31Speaker 1: if I like that idea. You know, if I have
- 25:34Speaker 1: the time, I think my standards do change as a
- 25:37Speaker 1: season progresses. So if I was to say, you know,
- 25:41Speaker 1: you know, a certain caliber of deer comes through the
- 25:45Speaker 1: timber and I pass it, but later on that that
- 25:48Speaker 1: caliber of deer becomes acceptable later on in the season,
- 25:52Speaker 1: you know what, I think, I'm okay with that. Yeah,
- 25:54Speaker 1: I kind of tend to agree. For me too, I've
- 25:56Speaker 1: had that same thing happened myself. I don't stay what
- 26:00Speaker 1: people are saying. But at the same time, um that
- 26:04Speaker 1: I don't know your desire, My desires or hopes out
- 26:11Speaker 1: of a season do changes the year goes by, and
- 26:14Speaker 1: what would make me happiness season sometimes changes too. You know,
- 26:17Speaker 1: at the beginning of the season, I go into a year,
- 26:19Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, I'm gonna hold out for a really
- 26:21Speaker 1: really old buck or one buck or a giant buck
- 26:23Speaker 1: or whatever it might be, because you know, you're naive
- 26:26Speaker 1: and optimistic at that point and everything seems possible. Um.
- 26:29Speaker 1: But then as you get to three months into it,
- 26:32Speaker 1: then just the idea of you know, having some kind
- 26:35Speaker 1: of success or just putting me in the freezer, or
- 26:37Speaker 1: just killing a decent buck that might make you really happy,
- 26:41Speaker 1: and what's wrong with that? You know? Right? Right? So
- 26:44Speaker 1: now I kind of want to ask that same question
- 26:46Speaker 1: to you because your your white Tail season got interesting
- 26:52Speaker 1: when holy Field showed up on camera again and remind
- 26:57Speaker 1: us all what that date was, so he would back
- 27:00Speaker 1: up on camera mid September two, so before the season started. Now,
- 27:07Speaker 1: when you got that picture, how long did it take
- 27:11Speaker 1: for you to say it's holy Field or bust? That night?
- 27:17Speaker 1: Basically when I decided that it was holy Field for sure. Um,
- 27:21Speaker 1: you know, I started comparing pictures and as we talked
- 27:24Speaker 1: all year, and we talked to all of last year, right,
- 27:26Speaker 1: holy Field was this deer that I've been trying to
- 27:28Speaker 1: kill for now to two and a half years or
- 27:31Speaker 1: whatever it was. And yeah, if he if he made
- 27:33Speaker 1: it back, he was gonna be the one and he
- 27:36Speaker 1: was going to be what my whole season would revolve around.
- 27:38Speaker 1: And I went into the season, you know, knowing that
- 27:41Speaker 1: and being okay with that. Um, but maybe naively I
- 27:45Speaker 1: thought it was gonna happen. I was there. I was
- 27:47Speaker 1: too confident that if he was there, I was going
- 27:50Speaker 1: to kill um. Despite challenges I've had doing that in
- 27:54Speaker 1: the past, to a degree, Um. So I'll tell you, man,
- 27:58Speaker 1: I kind of agree with you there though. I mean,
- 28:01Speaker 1: if you if you look at annual patterns. I had
- 28:04Speaker 1: a I had a really good conversation with a guy
- 28:07Speaker 1: yesterday actually about annual patterns. And if you were making
- 28:11Speaker 1: your decision based off of annual patterns, I would have
- 28:13Speaker 1: went into the season gunning for holy Field with a
- 28:18Speaker 1: very high level of certainty, you know what I mean? Yeah,
- 28:22Speaker 1: And I mean as as much as you can be
- 28:24Speaker 1: confident in killing the mature buck in Michigan on essentially
- 28:28Speaker 1: forty acres of huntable ground. I mean, I had about
- 28:31Speaker 1: as good as circumstances coming to the seasons as you
- 28:33Speaker 1: could ask for, given the experiences I had seen the
- 28:36Speaker 1: stare in the past. And um, in a lot of ways,
- 28:39Speaker 1: it went about as good as I could ask for.
- 28:41Speaker 1: I mean, it didn't go as as good as I
- 28:44Speaker 1: could have asked for because I didn't kill him. Um,
- 28:46Speaker 1: but a lot of things did go pretty darn close
- 28:49Speaker 1: to going well. Um, and you just don't. I've talked
- 28:54Speaker 1: to a lot of buddies, and here in Michigan, a
- 28:56Speaker 1: lot of the guys hunting in situations similar to this,
- 28:59Speaker 1: and my situation with holy Field is just really unique
- 29:02Speaker 1: to this area. You just don't get many bucks that
- 29:04Speaker 1: make it to this age, and you don't get bucks
- 29:07Speaker 1: you get to see as often as I got to
- 29:09Speaker 1: see this here and have as many encounters and chances
- 29:11Speaker 1: at him. Um, there just aren't many mature bucks to
- 29:14Speaker 1: go around, especially not on a small property like this
- 29:17Speaker 1: with you know, just limited cover, etcetera, etcetera. So so
- 29:21Speaker 1: I think, to one one way looking at things, I
- 29:24Speaker 1: should look at this season as I was really darn
- 29:26Speaker 1: lucky that I made a decision last winter, last late season.
- 29:30Speaker 1: I said, you know what, I could kill him in
- 29:32Speaker 1: muzzletter season, but I think he can make it. If
- 29:35Speaker 1: I don't kill him, it would be really awesome to
- 29:37Speaker 1: hunt him next year. That was the decision I made
- 29:39Speaker 1: in two thousand sixteen, and I knew that there was
- 29:42Speaker 1: a really good chance he might not make it till then.
- 29:44Speaker 1: He could die over the course of the winter or
- 29:46Speaker 1: get hit by a car or something. But I got
- 29:48Speaker 1: really lucky and fortunate and he didn't. He made it
- 29:51Speaker 1: to the hunting season, and so I got what I wanted, right,
- 29:54Speaker 1: I got a chance to hunt him again. I got
- 29:56Speaker 1: the chance for that excitement again. Um, the thrill of
- 30:00Speaker 1: chasing this deer. Um, I got that. So that is
- 30:05Speaker 1: a win, I suppose. I mean that's a really that
- 30:07Speaker 1: was a positive thing to take from this season that
- 30:10Speaker 1: I made a decision to pass a deer because it
- 30:13Speaker 1: wasn't about just putting antlers on the wall. It was
- 30:15Speaker 1: about extending this experience and having this experience in the
- 30:18Speaker 1: way I wanted to have it, um, And I was
- 30:20Speaker 1: able to achieve that for the most part. So that
- 30:22Speaker 1: was pretty cool. Um. So I'm gonna just jump right
- 30:27Speaker 1: into it because I want to know. But from a
- 30:30Speaker 1: strategy standpoint, this season, I mean, this deer was all
- 30:36Speaker 1: over the place. He made himself visible to you in
- 30:39Speaker 1: this this um certain amount of acreage that you have
- 30:43Speaker 1: access to. You know, you played cat and mouse with
- 30:46Speaker 1: him the entire season. You had uh several encounters with him.
- 30:52Speaker 1: You had one mishap type of an encounter. With all
- 30:56Speaker 1: that aside, do you think that you did everything you
- 31:00Speaker 1: possibly could have done to put yourself into the best
- 31:04Speaker 1: possible position to to I guess, harvest this animal. No, Um,
- 31:11Speaker 1: I think I did a lot of things right. I did.
- 31:16Speaker 1: I almost did enough to kill him. Um. But there
- 31:21Speaker 1: were certainly still mistakes. So I've gone through and thought through,
- 31:23Speaker 1: like all the different little things that maybe I've done wrong,
- 31:26Speaker 1: um little mistakes. I've made things that could have done differently.
- 31:29Speaker 1: So there definitely are things I picked out. I wish
- 31:31Speaker 1: I had done this differently. I wish I'd done that differently.
- 31:33Speaker 1: First and foremost, the very most obvious, and you can
- 31:37Speaker 1: look at this as a good thing. You can look
- 31:38Speaker 1: at this is a bad thing. On the good side,
- 31:42Speaker 1: I for the first time, um, for the first time
- 31:48Speaker 1: since two thousand fifteen, I was able to be in
- 31:53Speaker 1: shooting range, clear, easy, peasy shot at holy Field with
- 31:59Speaker 1: a bow on November seven. I had him at yards
- 32:03Speaker 1: and the wide open. I could have killed holy Field.
- 32:06Speaker 1: So I put myself in the right place at the
- 32:08Speaker 1: right time without getting winded. I got in there the
- 32:11Speaker 1: right access, I picked the right place to be. So
- 32:14Speaker 1: those things were all good things that I can look
- 32:16Speaker 1: at and say, hey, that was good. Essentially did what
- 32:19Speaker 1: I needed to do to kill that buck, except for
- 32:22Speaker 1: the final most important thing, which was to be looking
- 32:24Speaker 1: up and see him come in and not be looking
- 32:27Speaker 1: at your cell phone. So that was a big, of course,
- 32:30Speaker 1: the most obvious, glaring mistake of my entire season. Was
- 32:33Speaker 1: I blew my opportunity at achieving my number one goal
- 32:36Speaker 1: because I was looking at my phone as he walked in.
- 32:39Speaker 1: I didn't know he was there, and he saw me
- 32:42Speaker 1: when I did turn around to see him. So that
- 32:46Speaker 1: was the big one. Um. So let's let's expand that
- 32:50Speaker 1: a little bit. Did that affect you so much that
- 32:55Speaker 1: it's going to change your behavior in the tree stand
- 32:58Speaker 1: moving forward a little bit? Yes, yes it did. But
- 33:03Speaker 1: I'm not gonna I'm I'm not gonna lie to you
- 33:06Speaker 1: and say I'm never gonna look at my phone again. Um,
- 33:08Speaker 1: that's just impossible, probably at least for me personally, I
- 33:12Speaker 1: don't have that kind of focus. But I've definitely since then,
- 33:14Speaker 1: I've gotten better at it. I've spent much less time
- 33:17Speaker 1: on the phone, and when I do look at the phone,
- 33:20Speaker 1: I'm much more paranoid now, so I look at the
- 33:21Speaker 1: phone for like two seconds, look up, two seconds, look up. Um.
- 33:25Speaker 1: So I've definitely gotten better and more aware of that. Um.
- 33:28Speaker 1: And definitely I think if this will be a great
- 33:31Speaker 1: kind of learning moment for me for the future when
- 33:34Speaker 1: it comes to all day sits um. Because one of
- 33:37Speaker 1: the good things I did this year is I hunted
- 33:39Speaker 1: a lot of all day sits. I think I put
- 33:41Speaker 1: in like fourteen or fifteen days where I hunted the
- 33:44Speaker 1: entire day. Um, And I'm proud of myself for that.
- 33:46Speaker 1: I was happy, Like that was the thing I can
- 33:47Speaker 1: look back in the season say, hey, you did a
- 33:49Speaker 1: good job on that market. That was something you said
- 33:51Speaker 1: you would do, and you stuck with it and you
- 33:53Speaker 1: toughed it out, even though a lot of those days
- 33:55Speaker 1: were miserable, long didn't see anything, etcetera, etcetera. But this
- 34:00Speaker 1: was one of the situations where you know, it almost
- 34:03Speaker 1: paid off. I was there at eleven o'clock in the
- 34:05Speaker 1: afternoon and so was he. Um. So I just need
- 34:10Speaker 1: to now get better at staying focused during that time period. Um.
- 34:13Speaker 1: It's really easy to not think you need to be
- 34:17Speaker 1: focused because of the time you're not seeing anything. But
- 34:21Speaker 1: I did see a lot of midday activity this year,
- 34:23Speaker 1: so more so than any other year probably. I was
- 34:26Speaker 1: just reminded of the fact that this isn't just something
- 34:29Speaker 1: that they tell you in the magazines or that Mark
- 34:31Speaker 1: preaches on the podcast all the time. They're actually some
- 34:34Speaker 1: truth to it. Um. So this is another good reminder
- 34:37Speaker 1: of me for me. Of that, I on the flip side, Um,
- 34:45Speaker 1: I think that there were a handful of other small things. Well,
- 34:50Speaker 1: let's take a step back here, Dan, because I am
- 34:53Speaker 1: looking at this through a lens um that that you
- 34:58Speaker 1: are not looking through it yet, and that the listeners
- 35:01Speaker 1: aren't looking through it yet, And that is this thing.
- 35:06Speaker 1: I believe that holy Field is dead. You believe that
- 35:12Speaker 1: holy Field is dead. I think the hunt for holy
- 35:14Speaker 1: Field is done. Okay, Wait a second, Yeah, we haven't.
- 35:18Speaker 1: I've not. I've not said this publicly yet, but I
- 35:20Speaker 1: think it's done. Okay. So the last time I thought
- 35:24Speaker 1: I talked with you is that the gun season was
- 35:27Speaker 1: over and you had trail camera pictures of him. It
- 35:33Speaker 1: wasn't a trail Cara picture of him. It was a
- 35:35Speaker 1: sight a sighting my wife. My wife had seen him
- 35:39Speaker 1: in a field from the road. She does a wonderful
- 35:42Speaker 1: job of being an extra set of scouting eyes for
- 35:45Speaker 1: me in the evenings when I'm not around, She'll she'll
- 35:47Speaker 1: check this area out every once in a while because
- 35:50Speaker 1: it's close to home. And um, she told me she
- 35:53Speaker 1: saw him the evening of December one. I was in
- 35:56Speaker 1: Ohio that night, Okay, And that was the day after
- 36:00Speaker 1: gun season. So at that point I was really excited
- 36:04Speaker 1: he made it through guns season. I thought that there
- 36:07Speaker 1: were very good chances then that the worst of the um,
- 36:10Speaker 1: the worst of the threats to him being killed by
- 36:13Speaker 1: someone else were done. Um. So when I got back
- 36:15Speaker 1: from Ohio, I waited a couple of days for this
- 36:17Speaker 1: cold front I was supposed to hit, and once that
- 36:19Speaker 1: cold front hit, I started hunting. Um. But from that
- 36:22Speaker 1: point on I did not get another sighting of him.
- 36:25Speaker 1: I did not get a trail camera picture of him. Um.
- 36:27Speaker 1: I think I mentioned this in a past episode, but
- 36:29Speaker 1: I didn't get a trailer I've not had a picture
- 36:31Speaker 1: of him since October. So even though even though I
- 36:34Speaker 1: was seeing him November, the last time I personally saw
- 36:38Speaker 1: him was November. And then, you know, like I said,
- 36:42Speaker 1: no pictures all through that time period. Then my wife
- 36:45Speaker 1: got a sighting of him on December one, and I
- 36:47Speaker 1: believe he made it through the gun season, but again
- 36:49Speaker 1: no pictures. Um. No sightings or pictures through December, and
- 36:53Speaker 1: then around Christmas give or take. Sometime around that, I
- 36:57Speaker 1: don't remember exactly what it was uh. Um, I heard
- 37:01Speaker 1: a rumor of a neighbor having killed a big buck.
- 37:06Speaker 1: And so I've been trying to confirm this. I've been
- 37:08Speaker 1: texting some other people in the area. UM, and this guy. UM.
- 37:14Speaker 1: Basically the from a friend of a friend said that
- 37:16Speaker 1: a neighbor, a guy from a neighboring property, killed a
- 37:20Speaker 1: big buck over here. UM. I don't know, I don't know,
- 37:24Speaker 1: I don't know anything more. Really, I don't know where
- 37:25Speaker 1: this was. I don't know what this person would off
- 37:28Speaker 1: would call a big buck. UM, but it would kind
- 37:31Speaker 1: of make sense that this guy killed him with a
- 37:33Speaker 1: muzzleloader if we saw him December one, and let me
- 37:37Speaker 1: take a step back, UM, my wife also heard a
- 37:40Speaker 1: really loud muzzleloader shot on December two, UM, the day
- 37:47Speaker 1: after she saw this buck. After she saw holy Field
- 37:49Speaker 1: out in the wide open field. The next day, she
- 37:52Speaker 1: she heard a really loud gun shot. UM. And that
- 37:56Speaker 1: that doesn't happen that often. So it was somewhere nearby, um,
- 38:01Speaker 1: right after she had seen holy Field moving in daylight.
- 38:06Speaker 1: So between those two things and then finding out that
- 38:08Speaker 1: the neighbor supposed to kill a big buck and this
- 38:11Speaker 1: neighbor hunts a property, the interesting thing about this situation,
- 38:15Speaker 1: if anyone was gonna kill holy Field I would not
- 38:18Speaker 1: have thought it would have been this gentleman. Um, because
- 38:21Speaker 1: this guy just owns field edge. Um, he owns no cover.
- 38:25Speaker 1: He just has a big field. I don't even know
- 38:28Speaker 1: if any of the trees are on his property at all.
- 38:30Speaker 1: So and he I've only ever seen this guy go
- 38:33Speaker 1: out hunt like two or three times in the last
- 38:36Speaker 1: like six or seven years. I've been hunting this property,
- 38:38Speaker 1: Like he's never out there. I don't think he's a
- 38:39Speaker 1: very serious hunt at all. Um, I don't I don't
- 38:42Speaker 1: know him personally, I don't know the details. So this
- 38:44Speaker 1: is just assumptions I'm making, but based on observation from
- 38:47Speaker 1: a distance. And you know, when I've been out there
- 38:49Speaker 1: a couple of times, have seen this person or someone
- 38:52Speaker 1: out there. Um, this was not where I thought holy
- 38:56Speaker 1: Field's threat was, especially since this year. Although then, like
- 39:00Speaker 1: back in the back of the property, holy Field was
- 39:02Speaker 1: not moving out in the open fields too much, especially
- 39:06Speaker 1: out by the roads. But long story short, this person
- 39:11Speaker 1: supposed we killed a big deer that coincided closely with
- 39:16Speaker 1: when we stopped getting sightings of him and when a
- 39:19Speaker 1: gunshot was heard in the area. Um, and I don't know,
- 39:25Speaker 1: I have no pictures of him, no sightings of him,
- 39:28Speaker 1: and just like that gut feeling that tells me he's
- 39:32Speaker 1: probably gone. Now I could be completely wrong, because like
- 39:35Speaker 1: I said, I mean I saw him a bunch in November,
- 39:39Speaker 1: but didn't get a single trailcra picture of him despite that,
- 39:41Speaker 1: So he certainly has the ability to avoid my cameras.
- 39:47Speaker 1: And on the other hand, in October I didn't see
- 39:49Speaker 1: him at all, but I did get trailcare pictures of him.
- 39:52Speaker 1: He definitely changed his behavior a lot this season. Um.
- 39:56Speaker 1: In the past two years, he was much more visible,
- 39:59Speaker 1: he was much more on camera, he was much more active.
- 40:02Speaker 1: This year, he he became like old Bucks do, and
- 40:06Speaker 1: he became much more of a hermit. He didn't move
- 40:08Speaker 1: at all, except for at least I didn't see him
- 40:11Speaker 1: moving during daylight at all, except for a fourteen went
- 40:13Speaker 1: day window from Halloween to November. That was the only
- 40:17Speaker 1: daylight setting as I got. I think I had ten
- 40:19Speaker 1: settings or eleven settings or something like that in that window,
- 40:23Speaker 1: and that was it the whole season. I didn't see
- 40:25Speaker 1: him way off from the distance like I've seen him
- 40:27Speaker 1: in the past. Um, So he could be alive and
- 40:31Speaker 1: he could be hold up in some little cranny or
- 40:34Speaker 1: some swamp or somewhere else where, you know, he can
- 40:37Speaker 1: just get get by and not have any pressure from humans.
- 40:40Speaker 1: And this neighbor maybe just shot some other buck that
- 40:42Speaker 1: I didn't know about. But just the fact that I
- 40:46Speaker 1: had only seen holy Field, Holy Feel was the only
- 40:48Speaker 1: big buck I was getting on trail camera. He was
- 40:50Speaker 1: the only big buck I was seeing. Um. I mean,
- 40:53Speaker 1: there was no other buck that I would qualify as
- 40:55Speaker 1: big that I even got pictures of the whole season.
- 40:57Speaker 1: So I just I'm thinking, you know, if this guy
- 41:01Speaker 1: is saying to kill a big buck, I don't know
- 41:02Speaker 1: what other big bucket could be because there haven't been
- 41:04Speaker 1: any others. But at the same time, to you know,
- 41:07Speaker 1: ten days ago or whatever, I saw a random giant
- 41:10Speaker 1: on this property that I've never seen before, and he
- 41:13Speaker 1: just showed up. So it's not to say that there
- 41:15Speaker 1: couldn't be some random other deer in the area that
- 41:17Speaker 1: just never came out of the property. I can hunt.
- 41:19Speaker 1: But this guy, this guy killed. Um. I talked to
- 41:22Speaker 1: another neighbor today about this very issue, you know, talking
- 41:25Speaker 1: about what I think maybe what happened, and this guy
- 41:27Speaker 1: said that he saw like three or four different pretty
- 41:31Speaker 1: respectable big Bucks over on his side, UM, that I
- 41:34Speaker 1: never saw at all. And um, and that's not that
- 41:37Speaker 1: far away. So so I'm making assumptions. I'm maybe I'm
- 41:42Speaker 1: being too negative on this. I have not gotten confirmation.
- 41:44Speaker 1: I've stopped by this person's house, UM, trying to trying
- 41:47Speaker 1: to ask him if you know, he'll share me a picture,
- 41:51Speaker 1: you know, chatting with me about what happened, just because
- 41:52Speaker 1: I'm curious to get confirmation on this, and he hasn't
- 41:55Speaker 1: been home, so I'm hoping to get some kind of
- 41:57Speaker 1: confirmation soon. Just hasn't happened yet. Um. But so I'm
- 42:00Speaker 1: looking through all of these things related to holy Field
- 42:03Speaker 1: and the decisions I made, the good things and the
- 42:05Speaker 1: bad things. I'm looking at them through the lens of
- 42:09Speaker 1: it being done right, um, which which I thought was
- 42:12Speaker 1: worth pointing out. So I I'm going to reflect back
- 42:18Speaker 1: on the buck I was chasing shipwreck, right, you know
- 42:21Speaker 1: that story. But at the end of every season, I
- 42:26Speaker 1: would make the assumption that I was never going to
- 42:28Speaker 1: see him again until I got confirmation that he didn't
- 42:34Speaker 1: you know, he didn't show up on trail cameras or
- 42:37Speaker 1: I didn't see him from the tree stand I mean,
- 42:39Speaker 1: but I didn't allow that buck necessarily to dictate what
- 42:46Speaker 1: I was going to do if I, you know, if
- 42:49Speaker 1: I didn't have conversations confirmation that he was alive or not.
- 42:54Speaker 1: So you don't know the You don't know whether or
- 42:58Speaker 1: not he's dead. You have a gut fee thinking he's dead.
- 43:03Speaker 1: How are you going to approach this upcoming season? Are
- 43:06Speaker 1: you assuming? Are I mean, I guess are you? I
- 43:09Speaker 1: know you're assuming he's dead? But are you going to
- 43:12Speaker 1: let it dictate what you're doing from here on out
- 43:15Speaker 1: for say, maybe upcoming season with no verification? So so,
- 43:20Speaker 1: first and foremost, I am going to try to get
- 43:22Speaker 1: confirmation at least from this guy to try to figure
- 43:25Speaker 1: out what buck he did shoot, so at least I
- 43:27Speaker 1: can have that question answer. I'm going to try to
- 43:28Speaker 1: talk to this person figure that out at least um.
- 43:32Speaker 1: But otherwise I think that, yes, I'm gonna go into
- 43:36Speaker 1: the season assuming he's dead unless I see him or
- 43:38Speaker 1: get a picture of him. Even if this guy says, oh, no,
- 43:41Speaker 1: I didn't shoot a big buck, or here's the picture
- 43:43Speaker 1: and it's some other deer. Um. Even if that's the case,
- 43:46Speaker 1: I'm still going to go into the season assuming he's dead,
- 43:48Speaker 1: hoping for the best, but assuming he's probably gone. Um
- 43:51Speaker 1: but I will be taking the things I learned from
- 43:53Speaker 1: this past season applying them to next year. And um
- 43:57Speaker 1: you know, still going to be using that all that
- 43:59Speaker 1: the things that picked up from holy Field to to
- 44:02Speaker 1: the next year, to the next opportunity. UM. So there's
- 44:05Speaker 1: no shorge of things. I definitely learned a lot from
- 44:08Speaker 1: this deer, this deer and this hunt over the past
- 44:10Speaker 1: two even three years if you count the first year
- 44:12Speaker 1: when I was passing him, um man, a wealth of information.
- 44:17Speaker 1: It pushed me to try to understand things to a
- 44:19Speaker 1: level of detail that I never had before. Um. And
- 44:23Speaker 1: I can look at so many little things that I
- 44:25Speaker 1: did this year, both good and bad, that I think
- 44:28Speaker 1: just just thinking through these things is making me a
- 44:32Speaker 1: better hunter. So so let me let me tell, let
- 44:34Speaker 1: me do this. I went through and try to look
- 44:36Speaker 1: at all the hunts that I made throughout the season
- 44:39Speaker 1: on this property, and I'm able to pick out all
- 44:43Speaker 1: these little, tiny things now that I think I could
- 44:45Speaker 1: have done better than in the past. There would have
- 44:48Speaker 1: been like dozens of things I did wrong, probably, but
- 44:51Speaker 1: every year I've been taking a little bit paying a
- 44:53Speaker 1: little more attention to detail, fixing up, you know, two
- 44:56Speaker 1: of four issues this year, and then one more out
- 44:59Speaker 1: of the four issues the next year. And now I'm
- 45:01Speaker 1: getting to the point where now it's these little things. Um.
- 45:04Speaker 1: But I can look back and say, well, I sure,
- 45:07Speaker 1: I'm glad that that thing I learned last year, I
- 45:09Speaker 1: did act on it, and man, look at the result.
- 45:12Speaker 1: I almost killed holy Field in that spot because I thought,
- 45:14Speaker 1: from what I saw last year, I should have a
- 45:16Speaker 1: stand here or different things on those lines. Um. So
- 45:20Speaker 1: one thing that I learned from last year that one
- 45:23Speaker 1: of the big things that last year I said, or
- 45:25Speaker 1: even this, you know this past spring and winter when
- 45:28Speaker 1: we were talking about one are the things that I'm
- 45:30Speaker 1: going to do differently in two thousand and seventeen. One
- 45:33Speaker 1: of the big mistakes I thought I made in two
- 45:35Speaker 1: thousand sixteen was that I got the confirmation of holy
- 45:41Speaker 1: Field was alive in two thousand and sixteen, and I
- 45:43Speaker 1: was gonna wait to try to hunt him sparingly in
- 45:45Speaker 1: October except for cold fronts um, because I thought I
- 45:48Speaker 1: had a good set set up. But then I hunted
- 45:50Speaker 1: that first day and then I was like the next
- 45:52Speaker 1: day looked pretty since so I hunt it again, and
- 45:55Speaker 1: then like six days later we had another coal front coming.
- 45:57Speaker 1: I was like, well, I'm gonna hunt this cold front
- 45:59Speaker 1: now and I take advantage. So I hunted that day
- 46:01Speaker 1: and the next day I didn't see him, and I
- 46:03Speaker 1: was like, I'm gonna stay out. And then seven days
- 46:05Speaker 1: later we had another little front come through and I
- 46:07Speaker 1: got a picture of him on the other side of
- 46:09Speaker 1: the propertis that, well, maybe I need to hunt now.
- 46:11Speaker 1: So I tried. So I kept him, having all these
- 46:13Speaker 1: little reasons that maybe now is the time of strike.
- 46:15Speaker 1: Now was the time of strike. Now was the time
- 46:17Speaker 1: of strike. And it resulted me over hunting a portion
- 46:20Speaker 1: of this property. Um a lot. I hunted a bunch
- 46:23Speaker 1: more than I thought I should have, probably, and maybe
- 46:26Speaker 1: that impacted my ability to kill him. In two thousand
- 46:29Speaker 1: and sixteen, before gun season, um I did see him
- 46:32Speaker 1: a bunch, but it couldn't get him within range except
- 46:35Speaker 1: for one night I had him at forty yards, but
- 46:37Speaker 1: it was a little too dark. You guys know that story. Um.
- 46:40Speaker 1: So in two thousand seventeen, my plan was to hunt
- 46:42Speaker 1: the first night and then unless there's just some very
- 46:47Speaker 1: very very obvious, glaring need to get in there and
- 46:50Speaker 1: hunt him like I saw him in daylight at this spot.
- 46:53Speaker 1: I'm not going to go in there at all until
- 46:56Speaker 1: the annual pattern I identified dictates that he should start
- 47:00Speaker 1: moving daylight again. So, just to recap very briefly, in
- 47:04Speaker 1: two thousand fifteen, the first daylight setting ahead of him
- 47:07Speaker 1: was on October. In two thousands sixteen, the first daylight
- 47:11Speaker 1: setting ahead of him was October. Both of those were
- 47:15Speaker 1: from the same stand in the same food plot, and
- 47:17Speaker 1: I had a shot opportunity to him on both of
- 47:20Speaker 1: those occasions. So my thought process was in two seventeen,
- 47:24Speaker 1: I'm not gonna hunt him until October, assuming conditions are right. UM.
- 47:31Speaker 1: And that's what I did. So I'm proud of myself
- 47:32Speaker 1: and the fact that I stayed out and maintained patients.
- 47:35Speaker 1: I didn't go into this proper at all except for
- 47:37Speaker 1: the opening night for three weeks UM. So I think
- 47:40Speaker 1: that was probably a good thing because he wasn't moving daylight.
- 47:43Speaker 1: I wasn't getting daylight trial camera pictures of him anywhere, UM,
- 47:47Speaker 1: no long distance scouting observations. So I stayed out. I
- 47:50Speaker 1: was good. Now here's a mistake I made. October comes along.
- 47:56Speaker 1: This is the pre pre prescribed date when I'm supposed
- 48:00Speaker 1: to start hunting him. I've been looking forward to this
- 48:02Speaker 1: day all season. I was like, all right, this is
- 48:04Speaker 1: when you should start moving. I gotta get out there.
- 48:07Speaker 1: I was so excited for the for weeks I was
- 48:09Speaker 1: looking forward to this, saying, all right, that's the day.
- 48:11Speaker 1: That's the day, that's the day. And then I saw
- 48:13Speaker 1: this cold front coming up that was going to coincide
- 48:15Speaker 1: with that. I thought, all right, this is gonna be it.
- 48:17Speaker 1: I'm gonna kill him. October shows up. The cold front
- 48:21Speaker 1: was hitting, but not what I wanted. The wind was
- 48:27Speaker 1: way higher than I thought it was going to be.
- 48:30Speaker 1: It looked like it was gonna be you know, mile
- 48:34Speaker 1: on our winds um higher than you're typically gonna see
- 48:38Speaker 1: a lot of deer activity in this area with those
- 48:40Speaker 1: kinds of conditions. But I was so kind of set
- 48:43Speaker 1: in my mind that I gotta be hunting in this day,
- 48:45Speaker 1: like I've been just dying to get out and hunt.
- 48:47Speaker 1: I wanted to do it so badly that I convinced myself.
- 48:50Speaker 1: I kept looking at the weather. Looking at the weather,
- 48:52Speaker 1: I'm like, well, maybe it's gonna die down below twenty
- 48:54Speaker 1: and if it's in like the teens, it'll be okay.
- 48:57Speaker 1: So I decided to go for it because I thought
- 49:00Speaker 1: the wind was going to die down. I didn't think
- 49:01Speaker 1: it'd be quite so bad the cold temperatures. I convinced
- 49:05Speaker 1: myself of this basically just because like in my gut,
- 49:09Speaker 1: I just wanted to go. I was just so excited
- 49:10Speaker 1: to go. Convinced myself to go out there. I got
- 49:13Speaker 1: into my tree and it was way worse than even
- 49:16Speaker 1: the forecast was was calling for. It was like thirty
- 49:19Speaker 1: winds and then the winds were swirling and it was
- 49:21Speaker 1: just insane. And instantly got into the tree and I'm like,
- 49:24Speaker 1: this is a disaster. I should have never come out here.
- 49:28Speaker 1: So that was a mistake I made because I was
- 49:29Speaker 1: just over anxious. I was so set in my plan
- 49:32Speaker 1: that I had made. Um I've been patient for so long.
- 49:35Speaker 1: But then because I had put this date on the calendar,
- 49:37Speaker 1: I wasn't able to look at it through clear eyes
- 49:41Speaker 1: and say, no, it's not worth pushing it. What's what's
- 49:44Speaker 1: waiting one more day? You can wait one more day.
- 49:46Speaker 1: But I didn't. I went in there, and who knows,
- 49:49Speaker 1: maybe he was in that area where the wind was
- 49:52Speaker 1: swirling he winded me. And the first time I went
- 49:54Speaker 1: in in three and a half weeks, and that screwed
- 49:56Speaker 1: up the next seven to ten days. I don't know,
- 49:59Speaker 1: but that's possible. So there's a there's a mistake I made.
- 50:02Speaker 1: Now on the bright side, something I did right was
- 50:05Speaker 1: that I got in that tree. I realized this is
- 50:07Speaker 1: a disaster. This is even worse than I thought I
- 50:09Speaker 1: was gonna be, and I made the tough decision to
- 50:12Speaker 1: pull the plug. So immediately, within like five minutes, I
- 50:15Speaker 1: tore everything down and snuck right back out. Um So
- 50:19Speaker 1: I didn't make the problem worse. Um So there was
- 50:22Speaker 1: a mistake there, But then there was a tiny positive
- 50:25Speaker 1: decision to nor The next day, similar kind of scenario
- 50:30Speaker 1: pops up. Now it's October. The year before, I had
- 50:34Speaker 1: a shot at Holy Field at forty yards. I didn't
- 50:36Speaker 1: take it. Um. Then, now this cold front has hit,
- 50:39Speaker 1: the wind speeds have died down. This is gonna be
- 50:42Speaker 1: the night. This is gonna be a great night. Um
- 50:45Speaker 1: Now I'm finally gonna get that chance at him. But
- 50:48Speaker 1: with the wind direction we had, it was a little bit.
- 50:51Speaker 1: It was it was straight west, if I remember right,
- 50:53Speaker 1: And to hunt the spot where I had gotten these
- 50:56Speaker 1: shots at Holy Field the past. I really want a
- 50:58Speaker 1: northwest to know a wind. Um, So I've got This
- 51:03Speaker 1: is a food little food plot system We've talked about
- 51:05Speaker 1: a lot in the past. There's a box blind on
- 51:09Speaker 1: the south side of it, and then there's a tree
- 51:10Speaker 1: stand kind of in the middle of the food plot complex.
- 51:14Speaker 1: I thought, okay, even though to do west wind, I
- 51:16Speaker 1: can hunt the box blind with that, do west wind
- 51:18Speaker 1: and be okay. So I go and hunt the box blind.
- 51:21Speaker 1: And as I told the story earlier this year, I
- 51:23Speaker 1: got into the blind, opened the door and it was
- 51:26Speaker 1: loaded with bees, and so I got sworn by bees
- 51:30Speaker 1: and I ran down out of the blind, and I realized, well,
- 51:33Speaker 1: what the heck am I going to do? I can't
- 51:35Speaker 1: hunt the box blind now. UM. So what I ended
- 51:41Speaker 1: up doing. I was so convinced that I had to
- 51:43Speaker 1: be hunting, and I was so excited to finally be
- 51:45Speaker 1: hunting that I made another potential mistake. I went and
- 51:49Speaker 1: I said, well, I gotta hunt this food plot complex
- 51:52Speaker 1: because this is the spot to be UM. So I
- 51:55Speaker 1: hunted that tree stand that was in the middle of
- 51:57Speaker 1: the of the system there, and even though I had
- 52:01Speaker 1: to do west wind, which cuts into a portion of
- 52:06Speaker 1: the cover, and I said, screw it. I gotta swing
- 52:09Speaker 1: for the fences. I've been waiting three and a half weeks.
- 52:12Speaker 1: All the other conditions are right, this is the right place,
- 52:15Speaker 1: this is the right time, based on annual patterns of
- 52:17Speaker 1: the right conditions. Um, sometimes you gotta take a risk.
- 52:21Speaker 1: So I went in there and hunted it because my
- 52:23Speaker 1: first option in the blind didn't work. And I sat
- 52:27Speaker 1: in there with my wind blowing into a substantial section
- 52:31Speaker 1: of cover that holy Field might have been coming from.
- 52:33Speaker 1: It wasn't It wasn't the worst. Like if you imagine
- 52:36Speaker 1: a hundred and eighty degrees, Like if you're looking at
- 52:38Speaker 1: a pie and you put a line going from twelve
- 52:41Speaker 1: to six right down the middle of that pie. On
- 52:44Speaker 1: the left side of the pie is the food plot
- 52:46Speaker 1: system and cover in a little finger of timber. On
- 52:49Speaker 1: the right side of the pie is this big stretch
- 52:51Speaker 1: of cover where holy Field, I assumed where he was betting.
- 52:54Speaker 1: Most of the time. I was blowing my wind into
- 52:59Speaker 1: about a third of it. So a third of that
- 53:01Speaker 1: pine now was screwed. Um, So I was just hoping, well,
- 53:07Speaker 1: hopefully it wasn't. In the bottom third hopefully he's in
- 53:09Speaker 1: the top two thirds. Um. Usually I'd like to try
- 53:13Speaker 1: to not blow into that at all, or just blow
- 53:15Speaker 1: into the bottom eighth of it. This time I didn't.
- 53:18Speaker 1: And maybe that was a mistake. Maybe he was in
- 53:20Speaker 1: there and he winded me. And again, maybe that was
- 53:23Speaker 1: the time I screwed things up. Um. I don't know. Uh,
- 53:28Speaker 1: that was a that was a bad decision. Possibly. On
- 53:31Speaker 1: the other hand, if he came from the northwest section
- 53:33Speaker 1: there and I was sitting there and I swung for
- 53:36Speaker 1: the fences, it might have worked out. But you just
- 53:38Speaker 1: never know. I mean you can. I could do this
- 53:40Speaker 1: all day, right, I could second guess all my decisions,
- 53:42Speaker 1: back and forth, back and forth, back and forth. I
- 53:44Speaker 1: don't know how much is too much. I don't know
- 53:46Speaker 1: how much is healthy. Um. But that was another example
- 53:50Speaker 1: of like a small thing I observed that maybe I
- 53:52Speaker 1: screwed up. Um. Do you think you over analyze? Oh
- 53:56Speaker 1: my god, check yeah. But I mean listen to me.
- 54:00Speaker 1: I've just gone through this and I'm picking apart every
- 54:03Speaker 1: little thing. I think that there's I think who knows, right,
- 54:08Speaker 1: this is me saying this, and I could be completely nuts.
- 54:12Speaker 1: I think there's value in the process. So I think
- 54:15Speaker 1: there's value in analyzing these things afterwards to at least
- 54:19Speaker 1: think about them, to like, look at, Okay, why did
- 54:21Speaker 1: I make this decision? What were the things that you
- 54:24Speaker 1: know we're influencing making me making that decision, um, And
- 54:29Speaker 1: then just like reflecting on that, and I think that
- 54:32Speaker 1: will help me make better decisions in the future. I
- 54:34Speaker 1: do think there's value there, um. But at the same time,
- 54:37Speaker 1: I do know that during the season I over analyzed
- 54:41Speaker 1: some things to a point where, um, there can be
- 54:44Speaker 1: paralysis by analysis or I'll get overwhelmed by trying to
- 54:47Speaker 1: make the right decisions. I put a lot of pressure
- 54:49Speaker 1: on myself to make the right decisions. UM. So that's
- 54:52Speaker 1: been a big takeaway from me out of the two
- 54:54Speaker 1: thousand seventeen season is again just to like the pressure
- 54:57Speaker 1: I put on myself and the stress that I let
- 54:59Speaker 1: myself get from some of these things because I'm so um,
- 55:04Speaker 1: I am. I am obsessive, Like I am admittedly obsessive
- 55:09Speaker 1: when it comes to goals and achievements and tasks, Like
- 55:13Speaker 1: I can get really really serious about things, um. And
- 55:17Speaker 1: that can be a good thing to a degree because
- 55:19Speaker 1: it has allowed me to achieve my goals in many
- 55:22Speaker 1: cases and allows me to do things that I have
- 55:24Speaker 1: wanted to do, but sometimes it definitely leads to um,
- 55:29Speaker 1: it leads to challenges to right well, I think now
- 55:33Speaker 1: we'll make for a good time to take a quick break.
- 55:35Speaker 1: Here for word from our partners at White Tailed Properties.
- 55:40Speaker 1: This week with white Tail Properties, we are joined by
- 55:42Speaker 1: Tony Hansen, a land specialist out of Michigan, and Tony
- 55:45Speaker 1: is gonna be telling us about how hunting strategy changes
- 55:48Speaker 1: in pressured states like Michigan. I'd say the biggest difference
- 55:53Speaker 1: is that just the availability the number of older deer
- 55:57Speaker 1: is much much lower, so you don't have, you know,
- 56:01Speaker 1: a bunch of them to pick from, So you've got
- 56:05Speaker 1: to be pretty cure that you do have to hunt.
- 56:07Speaker 1: And you know, for me, it's it's all about trying
- 56:10Speaker 1: to manage the girl that I've got so that I
- 56:13Speaker 1: do have that age structure because it's it's probably not
- 56:15Speaker 1: going to be there on the neighbors. If you'd like
- 56:18Speaker 1: to learn more and to see the properties that Tony
- 56:20Speaker 1: currently has listed for sale, visit Whitetail properties dot com.
- 56:24Speaker 1: Backslash Hanson that's H A N S E N. You
- 56:31Speaker 1: know along that same kind of thought process. This year,
- 56:36Speaker 1: I did something a little bit different. And yeah, I
- 56:40Speaker 1: looked at maps at when I was at home or
- 56:43Speaker 1: you know, before the hunt, but I didn't make a
- 56:45Speaker 1: decision on what stand I was going to hunt until
- 56:52Speaker 1: I pulled onto the farm because I felt like I
- 56:56Speaker 1: was doing the same thing that you were, and that
- 56:58Speaker 1: was over analyzing and having some kind of you're wasting
- 57:04Speaker 1: time at that point, You're you're not functioning at your
- 57:07Speaker 1: most efficient. And I think that what that time constraint
- 57:10Speaker 1: does is now you're on the farm and it's time
- 57:13Speaker 1: to make a decision or you're gonna get to your
- 57:15Speaker 1: stand late. So I think that helped me choose the
- 57:20Speaker 1: right stands, you know, and and put myself into a
- 57:24Speaker 1: position where I know this stands good. I know this
- 57:27Speaker 1: area is good because the wind direction, the terrain, all
- 57:30Speaker 1: that stuff. I have either pictures or they're signed there.
- 57:33Speaker 1: I just need to go do it. Yeah, I think
- 57:37Speaker 1: that there's something to that. Um. I don't know if
- 57:39Speaker 1: you have this struggle at all, But for me, one
- 57:44Speaker 1: thing I've noticed that I do this kind of applies
- 57:47Speaker 1: to life in general too. But when I make a decision,
- 57:50Speaker 1: so in this case, like choosing a stand site. So
- 57:53Speaker 1: I'll be looking at the weather, you know, all the all.
- 57:55Speaker 1: Let's say I'm trying to choose where I want to
- 57:57Speaker 1: hunt the next morning. We'll say, um, the night before,
- 58:01Speaker 1: I'm looking at the weather over and over again, checking that,
- 58:04Speaker 1: thinking through what I want to do, and I try
- 58:05Speaker 1: to make a decision usually the night before, so based
- 58:08Speaker 1: on the weather, based on the wind direction, all the
- 58:11Speaker 1: things I know, or I think I know. I said, Okay,
- 58:14Speaker 1: I think tomorrow and hunt this stand the next day.
- 58:18Speaker 1: I have a really hard time taking in any new
- 58:22Speaker 1: information to change that decision. So if I arrive at
- 58:26Speaker 1: the property and then all of a sudden, I'm walking
- 58:28Speaker 1: out to the property and all of a sudden the
- 58:29Speaker 1: wind isn't exactly what the forecast said it was, but
- 58:33Speaker 1: my mind was already made up on I'm going to
- 58:36Speaker 1: stand X, I have a really hard time not wanting
- 58:39Speaker 1: to stick to that decision. Like if if I've decided
- 58:42Speaker 1: to hunt stand X, it's hard for me to adjust
- 58:46Speaker 1: at the last minute and switch it up, Like I'm
- 58:47Speaker 1: already so convinced of that that I'm like, uh, I
- 58:51Speaker 1: gotta stick with that. And sometimes maybe that's a mistake. Too.
- 58:54Speaker 1: So there's something to be said about waiting to make
- 58:56Speaker 1: some of those decisions until you have the very most
- 58:58Speaker 1: recent information, and then you kind of allow your gut
- 59:01Speaker 1: to make the decision a little bit more to UM
- 59:04Speaker 1: versus getting so UM wound up in the details of
- 59:09Speaker 1: all the other factors. UM. That's something that I don't
- 59:13Speaker 1: know if that's an issue I've had in the past.
- 59:15Speaker 1: I think I've done a pretty good job over the
- 59:17Speaker 1: years of getting better and better at choosing the right
- 59:19Speaker 1: places to be UM. And I think for the most case, UM,
- 59:24Speaker 1: I've seen the results of that. But I definitely have
- 59:28Speaker 1: a tendency to second guest myself. There's no doubt about
- 59:31Speaker 1: that too. I did a lot less of that. I
- 59:33Speaker 1: think that's one maybe maybe that could even be a
- 59:35Speaker 1: takeaway from this season is I did a lot less
- 59:38Speaker 1: second guessing myself. You know, if I if I felt
- 59:41Speaker 1: an area was maybe burn getting burnt out. UM, that's
- 59:46Speaker 1: actually what led me to go into this new piece
- 59:48Speaker 1: of property and on night one and harvest the buck
- 59:51Speaker 1: that I harvested this year. Because everything that I wanted
- 59:57Speaker 1: to you know that I said this is good location
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: to be, it wasn't there at that particular time. So
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: I decided to go to a completely different area and
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: that worked. So I feel that maybe as a positive
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: for me, I did a lot less second guessing myself
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: this year. That's a I think it's a good sign, right,
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: That's a sign of confidence, if nothing else. And I man,
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: confidence I think is so important, um, when it comes
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: to just your mindset out there in the woods. If
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: you have confidence in something, I think you're just in
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: a better position as far as being there mentally. And
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: if you're not there mentally, you make mistakes like missing
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: a deer walking by you twenty yards. Um, So that's
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: I think that's clutch. I think that's huge. So speaking
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: of your shift to a new property, that is one
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: of the things that I am happy that I did. Um,
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: not switching to a new property, but I think I
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: did a better job this year of switching things up finally,
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: like I did switch things up off my original game plan,
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: um mid run. So I came into you know, as
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: we talked earlier that oct October two, I thought I
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: was going to kill him between and the thirty one,
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: I thought that last week in October was when I
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: was going to happen. And I had this whole game
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: plan like these properties food. They're sort of the stands
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: I had up by these food sources that I thought
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: I could kill him on. And that just didn't happen.
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: I wasn't seeing him anywhere. It wasn't getting daily pictures
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: of him anywhere. Um. But I in the past years,
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: I had always thought I had to hunt near the
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: front of this property because this betting area where I
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: had always seen him in the past was up there. Well,
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: when things weren't going right, I decided to switch things
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: up and try a different part of the property that
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: I in the past never hunted for him because I
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: never got pictures of him down there. I never saw
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: him it all down there. Um But I switched it up,
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: and I said, all right, I'm just gonna start doing
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: crazy things I've never done before because what I have
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: been trying isn't working. And when I started doing those
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: different things, then I started seeing him. I started I
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: started doing a bunch of different running gun sets. I
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: hunted a new stand almost every day, so I wasn't
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: hunting the same stands over and over. I was bouncing
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: from place to place to place. Um And that at
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: least gave me, got me to the wheelhouse with him.
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: I did see him. I had the shot opportunity of
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: one day. The next day, you know, three or four
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: days later, I had him within range, but there was
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: covering the way. Um So that was a positive that
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: I was proud of myself for doing, which was something
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: you know, it's always tough to do when you have
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: a bunch of pre hung sets. It's really easy to
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: want to just hunt hunt those pre hung sets. Um
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: But I told myself that, no, you're not going to
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: make excuses. You're not gonna take the easy way. So
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: I was getting up way away before daylight, HI, getting
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: these places and hanging and stand in the dark, like
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: three thirty or four in the morning, so I could
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: be hunting a new set in a new spot. And
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: that was a pain in the butt and didn't end up.
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: I didn't end up killing him with that, But I
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: do think that was a good thing. I think being
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: willing to switch. And then we talked about that a
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: lot in the past. Um So that was a positive.
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: I want to elaborate on that a second. I had
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: this thought go through my brain. Oh man, probably the
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: like the first two days, I I decided to hunt.
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: You know, I started hunting this year, and that was
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: do I do I get a benefit from hanging my
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: stands so early and not doing running guns on these farms.
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: I think there's a small benefit, but I almost I
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: had this thought where where I said, you know, is
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: are these pre hung stands similar to what you said
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: subconsciously influencing me that I need to be in one
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: of those and not making a macro adjustment at the
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: moment that I need to be making a decision right
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: because the wind could you know, the weather chain says
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: north wind, but you get into your spot and it
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: could be north northeast or north northwest and it's just
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: a little bit different and that may influence you to
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: set up on you know, five yards different tier, five
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: yards difference there, and cause you're you know, you're sent
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: downstream to do something completely completely different. So I was
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: thinking to myself, Man, should I should I be prepping
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: like and hanging some of these early season stands that
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: kind of I don't I don't know what what how
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: how to say it, but I think it's somehow influencing
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: me to be satisfied with less than perfect stand location. Yeah,
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: they're kind of a crutch. Like you said, if if
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: you know you want to be in a certain area
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: and you already have a stand there, you're gonna nine
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: times that tend you're gonna hunt that stand because you
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: already have it there, even if, like you said, really
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: it might be better to be ten yards further over.
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: If you had to hang a news stand, you put
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: it in the perfect place. But since there's already one
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: there might as well just sitting that one. Now, agree
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: that you're saying. On the flip side, though, which which
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: one of these things is more important? Is what you
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: just said more important? Being in the right spot, the
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: exact right spot? Is that most important? Or is it
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: more important to be able to sneak into a spot
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: and very quietly go right up in the tree without
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: making an impact and be hunting right away versus the
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: potential of cutting down limbs or banging your tree stand
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: against metal step or something like that. So like the
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: chance of spooking deer while setting up that tree stand,
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: So which is which is more beneficial? I don't know,
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: that's a tough question, man. Yeah, you know how many
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: times have you had a deer five yards out of
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: range that you wanted to shoot, you know what I mean,
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: Just like it plays, it can. It's one of those
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: things where it can it can really screw up your
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: thought process if you make a decision and that decision
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: is wrong, as opposed to making a decision in that
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: and then that decision is right. You know. Yeah. I
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: think I think we've mentioned like this that fooled by
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: randomness concept where something happens once and then you take
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: that to be like an indicator of a rule sort of.
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: So if this one thing happened this one time, you think, Okay,
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: that's the way things are. But it could have just
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: been a random thing to happen. And that's that's, you know,
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: a risk of what we're doing right here really to
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: to a degree, especially what I do when I hyper
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: analyze things. Um, sometimes ship just happens. Yeah, Sometimes there's
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: things that are just out of your control, or bad
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: luck happens or um, things don't go your way and
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: you can't control. We can't control a whole heck of
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: a lot when it comes to deer hunting. Um. So
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: I think one of the big lessons I can take
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: from that this year is to give myself for that,
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: like to be okay with that to know that there's
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: a lot of stuff I can't control. Mistakes are going
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: to happen. You're not gonna get it all right, and
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: that's okay. Like I'm really hard on myself, um, like
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: I would, I really like as I think maybe if
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: you listen to me as I'm talking through all this,
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: I can be really nitpicky about this thing or that thing,
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: and I do that to myself in my head like
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: all day, um when I'm thinking about you know, the
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: hunting season really anything but um, but I think this
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: season helped me. Or I'm trying to look at this
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: season and use it as a lesson to say, you
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: know what, there's only so much you can do. It's
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: good to pay attention to the details. It's good to
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: try to keep improving. Um. I'm gonna keep on trying
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: to do that. But sometimes you also need to understand
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: that you can't control at all and you need to
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: learn to um, accept that, embrace it, um and and
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: not beat yourself up too much as well. Oh man,
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: I wish I could agree with you there. I think
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: I think I think you can control a majority of
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: it if you learn from your mistakes. Right now, the
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: rut brings a whole different kind of randomness to that.
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: But I feel that you can do a if given
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: multiple opportunities, you can control a scenario so well that
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: you that you can win, like your your percentage of
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: winning goes up, I mean, on a on a completely
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: different scale than what we're used to. Take a look
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: at the druries right in the Lakaskis. They set up
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: their farms to put themselves in a in a scenario
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: where they have the highest percentage of winning, right, And
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: I think that if given certain circumstances, you can control
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: that way more than what you think. I think it's
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: it's a relative thing, right, So I'm not arguing that
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: you can't control more. You can always control more. And
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: I mean that's a huge portion of like my whole
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: mindset when it comes to deer hunting is controlling as
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: many different little tiny variables as you possibly can agree
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: with that, And so yeah, the juries, the Lakowsky's, they
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: to a tremendous degree control a ton of variables and
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: that's a huge part of what does make them successful.
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: I agree. Um, I'm just saying you can't control everything.
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: And Mark Jury still has things happen that he doesn't
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: want to have happened. Yes, he kills lots of big deer,
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: but there are still mistakes that get made, or there
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: are still things that happen that piss him off and
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: the hunt gets screwed up a deer does the wrong thing,
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: or coyote runs in, or his blind falls over, or
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: a step falls out of the tree. Like things happen. Um.
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: So I'm simply saying, do as much as you possibly can,
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: push yourself more and more every single year, to learn more,
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: to improve more, to pay attention to the details. But
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: when something does go wrong, and this is maybe this
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: is just for me, because this is something I just
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: have I struggle with. I'm just saying, when something goes wrong,
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: identify it, learned from it. But then don't beat yourself up, Like,
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: don't hate yourself because that thing went wrong for me,
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: I need to be able to identify it, learn from it,
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: and be okay moving forward from that, and not identify it,
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: learn from it and then be pissed at yourself because
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: this thing went wrong and you're such a shitty deer
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: hunter because of it, Mark, and your season got ruined
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: because of this Mark, and you're never gonna kill holy
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: Field blah blah bla blah blah blah blah. Yes, So
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: so this has been my Um, this has been me
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: just having to work on that that portion of it. Yeah, um,
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: because and we talked about this a lot too. But
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: as much as killing a deer is what we strive
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: to do and we have our goals, and I think
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: it's great to have goals, and it's great to work
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: towards difficult things. And that's a big part of why
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: I love deer hunting and hunting mature bucks. But you're all,
- 1:11:11Speaker 1: we're also doing this because it's fun, right, We're trying
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: to have a good time. We're we're trying to do
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: all those things and if if and then every single
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: year I say the same thing. So if you've been
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: following the word Time podcast, you realize that I'm maybe
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: not doing a good job of learning this because every
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: year I have the same UM challenge is that I
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: need to continue to get better at like being happy
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: in the moment and like not overstressing about these things. Um.
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: And so that's something that I think I'll probably just
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: continue to be working on my whole life, because like,
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: maybe maybe a good thing about me is that I
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: take things really seriously and I work really really hard
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: and I want to achieve big things, um, but sometimes
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: that can be a detriment to UM. So that's that's
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: a constant balancing act that I'm trying to get better
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: at every year, right. And it just sucks because guys
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: like me and you are in a position of trying
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: to explain things right to people the listener, right when
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: there are certain things that you just can't explain, Like
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: I don't know. I wish I could sit here and
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: tell you that, you know, I have these certain goals
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: and I have you know that all these listeners, you know,
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: the listeners out there need to do this and need
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: to do that. But at the end of the day,
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: I think the most important thing is to just do
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: you do what you want to do and and not
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: worry about what others are thinking. Not worry about you know,
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: I don't know, I have this, I have this thing
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: that kind of pisces me off about people who and
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: I'm I'm I'm a hypocrite at this point too, because
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: I provide content suggestions and strategy advice, you know, but
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: everybody has a different scenario, right, and every like so
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: I take that much advice from a guy who hunts
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: large pieces of highly managed property, you know, or food
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: plot advice, because it's just not relatable to me. And
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: I think a lot of people try to put themselves
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: into a scenario where they're chasing seven year old you know,
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: Boot and Crockett deer when they're hunting public land in Michigan.
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: You know what I mean? Yeah, oh yeah. You gotta
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: be able to look at your reality and separate that
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: from what else you're seeing there from other people. For sure,
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: it's easy to fall into that trap though, you know,
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: I mean even and to your point, I preach it
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: all the time. I preached this, I mean, we do.
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: We talked about this in the podcast all the time
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: about how you need to look at your own stuff
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: of circumstances base your own goals and tactics based on
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: those unique situations and circumstances. But I still find myself
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: looking at people in other circumstances and being like, how
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: come I can't do that? Like, in moments and moments
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: of weakness, I find myself like piste off or jealous
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: when I see someone else having some great success to something,
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: I'm like, gosh, dang, it like I wish it was that,
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: Like for me, how can I and you can't do that.
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: You can't, you can't let that happen. But it is
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: human nature. Um, it's definitely human nature. But I don't
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: know so much of I feel like so much of
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: what we Maybe this is one of the reasons why
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: deer hunting at the to the degree that we take
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: it seriously, UM, why it's so compelling is that it's
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: if you think about the things we're thinking about, it's
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: an interesting reflection of a lot of just basic life
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: challenges in that I think we're talking about some things here,
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: like setting expectations, dealing with adversity, paying attention to other people,
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: comparing yourself to other people, learning from mistakes, um, getting
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: back up off the ground when bad things happen. Um.
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: These are all these things that we are talking about
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: in the context of deer hunting, but they're actually just
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: bigger life lessons that could apply to everything from your job,
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: to school to relationships. Um. And maybe this is like
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: a way that idiots like you and me can learn
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: stuff about life because of our obsession with deer hunting. UM.
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: And maybe that's part of why we love this thing
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: and taking it as seriously as we do because it's, uh,
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: there's other things going on here than just trying to
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: fill the freezer. Of course, that's that's the core of
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: what we're trying to do, but there's there's bigger picture
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: of things to learn from these experiences too, right, absolutely, man, absolutely?
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: Can I can I tell you about another huge area
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: of disappointment has been for me this year. Please don't
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: say co host. Please don't say co host. Please don't
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: say co host. No. Um. And this is another thing
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: that we talked about a lot, but I think I've
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: I've I've not done a good enough job with it,
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: and that is with having different places to go. So
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: a big mistake for me this year, and this kind
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: of revolves all around what we were talking about earlier,
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: is that I put all my eggs in the basket
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: of holy Field. So I was so focused on that
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: that I didn't take advantage of the other places I
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: had to hunt. But then I also didn't have as
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: many other good places to hunt as I should have too.
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: So for example, from October one through October, I didn't
- 1:16:31Speaker 1: want to hunt my best spot where holy Field was
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: because of the things we talked about already. But I
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: also didn't want to leave the area because I wanted
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: to be close enough that if I did get a
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: daylight picture of holy Field or something like that, I
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: wanted to still be a hunt him. So I didn't
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: go to North Dakota like I was gonna do. I
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: didn't go to Ohio at all like I could have done.
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: And because I didn't do a good job this year
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: on trying to find new spots in the general area,
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: I didn't have any other high quality local spots to hunt,
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: so I I kind of wasted three weeks in my
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: hunting season. Um. I went and I spent three or
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: four days up North Um, which is fun, but it
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: really wasn't, you know, going to pan out as far
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: as killing the sure buck. I had done some scouting
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: in public land this summer, so I thought I'm gonna
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: hunt a bunch public lands during that time period. But
- 1:17:17Speaker 1: I didn't do a good enough job scouting that public
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: I should have scouted more. I should have found more
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: spots on the public um because I hunted three times
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: in public but that didn't pan out at all. I
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: didn't spend so either either. I should have scouted more
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: or should have spent more time trying to hunt it
- 1:17:32Speaker 1: during that three week period to be able to just
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: and make something happen. But I didn't do that. Um
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: I got permission on a spot this summer, and then
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: I got lazy and busy and I never followed up
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: with him again because he wanted me to come back
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: and talk to him about details and some other stuff,
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: and just because of how busy things were, and I
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: thought I'll just focus on these other things, I never
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: went and tried to take advantage of that. That was
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: another mistake. Um There's another piece of property I have
- 1:17:59Speaker 1: locally that I had permission on in past years, but
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: I fell out of touch with him, and because I
- 1:18:06Speaker 1: fell out of touch with them, I felt bad about
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: trying to call him up and say, oh hey, I
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: just want to hunt your property again, so that I
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: never followed up in the end this year. UM I
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: should have been dealing with this over the past couple
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: of years, and instead now I don't have permission on
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: this place anymore. Um So. And and then again, on
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: top of all those things, I should have been knocking
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: on more doors this year locally to try to get
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: more quality places. The point of all that being is
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: that I put too much into this one property. I
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: let other opportunities slip by. I didn't work hard enough
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: to find more places locally, So I've either lost out
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: in places or I didn't have other options when I
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: should have been taking advantage of that time period. Through
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: time period, I could have been doing a bunch more hunting,
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: but I didn't. I hunted some subpar places just to
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: kind of pass the time until what I thought would
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: be prime time. Um, that was probably a mistake. I'm
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: missed out on some opportunities. So I think coming to
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: this next year, especially now that I'm gonna be putting
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: more time into Michigan, probably in the past because I
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: have this whole family thing going on that's going to
- 1:19:10Speaker 1: maybe change my travel schedule a little bit. Um, I
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: really need to find a bunch of good spots. I
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: can't just I can't just have a little, one little
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: good property in Michigan. Like the best deer hunters I
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: know that kill mature bucks consistently in Michigan have a
- 1:19:26Speaker 1: bunch of good places. I have a couple of decent
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: I've got one good spot and then a handful of
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: decent or Okay, spots. Um, and I've every year I'm like, oh,
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: well that's okay. I need a bunch of good spots
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: if I want to consistently kill mature bucks and not
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: just get lucky every couple of years. Um. If I
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: want to be one of those people, it's going to
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: be doing that every year. I think I need to
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: have a lot more places. Because if you don't own
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: a couple, if you don't own a big place that
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: you can control, if you're in a situation like I am,
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: where I'm hunting twenty maker little pieces and little pieces
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: and the nine piece and there's people everywhere, it's really
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: hard to get it done year in and year out,
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: counting on one little spot to produce over and over. Um.
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: So this year, hopefully I can practice what I preach
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: better than I have and do an even better job
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: this year finding us some new places. UM. And that
- 1:20:20Speaker 1: applies in Ohio too. I think my Ohio spots fizzling out.
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: Um this year, I gotta find some new stuff there. Um.
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: I need I need to rethink a lot of these
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: different things. I think I got a little comfortable. Over
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: the past maybe five years, things have been going well.
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: I've killed a couple of bucks every year. The last
- 1:20:39Speaker 1: like five years or so, I was getting comfortable with
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: that um, and I maybe maybe let things slip. I
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: didn't push things as far as maybe I should have
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: as far as finding new areas, keeping other options open um,
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: and I think that maybe bit me in the butt
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: a little bit this year. So that's that's another opportunity
- 1:20:58Speaker 1: area I think I've I've identified for all. Right, But
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: now we're gonna take our final break of the day
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: to thank our partners at Matthew's Archery. And as we've
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: been discussing over the past few weeks, Matthews has launched
- 1:21:11Speaker 1: their new boat for two thousand eighteen, the Matthews Try Acts,
- 1:21:15Speaker 1: And today we've got Lelakowski of The Crush TV to
- 1:21:18Speaker 1: talk about the difference he's seen with the Try Acts
- 1:21:22Speaker 1: and how it stands out above other boats he's used.
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: And it really it really hit home. You a lot
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: of times you need to pick up a bow for
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: the first time and you shoot it, it's like, yeah,
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: it feels good, it feels quiet, and you know, vibration
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: free and everything, and it's but it's really kind of
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: hard to tell because you don't compare it to other ones.
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: But when I got the try Acts, it was you know,
- 1:21:41Speaker 1: in the summer, and it didn't even have a name
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: for it yet. It didn't have any limbo graphics or anything.
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: It was just a boat. So I shot it, you know,
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: a bunch of summer, just getting used to it. And
- 1:21:51Speaker 1: so right before we were going out to out West
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: to start our hunts, I said, well, I better grab
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: you know, my my hand on thirty two for my
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: backup boat, and I just said one shot with it.
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: And I just was like, oh my gosh, what a difference.
- 1:22:03Speaker 1: I mean, just like the vibration in your hand and stuff.
- 1:22:06Speaker 1: And I was like, for how smooth and quiet that
- 1:22:08Speaker 1: Haleen thirty two was, you know for me over the years,
- 1:22:12Speaker 1: and I mean it was the I think last year
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: and all the comparison tests and everything, it was the
- 1:22:16Speaker 1: quietest and most libration for you have of any bow
- 1:22:18Speaker 1: on the market. I just couldn't believe how much different
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: the tracks was, even to the Halons. I was like, man,
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: that's really where I saw the difference. And so I've
- 1:22:28Speaker 1: just been super impressed with it. If you would like
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: to learn more about the Matthews tracks, you can visit
- 1:22:34Speaker 1: Matthews Inc. Dot Com. Yeah, man, it's always always like
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: I'm always looking for new properties and that's just I
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: guess that's just a part of me. That number one.
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: I like doing it, um And you know, I get
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: told no a lot, but I get told no a
- 1:22:51Speaker 1: lot outside of funding too, so UM, I'm used to it.
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: But always looking for good ground is you know, it's
- 1:23:01Speaker 1: just I mean, I don't know, I just like to
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: hunt different places to um. Another thing that I want
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: to do kind of in regards to hunting new locations,
- 1:23:13Speaker 1: and that is and I don't necessarily have a lot
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: to say on it right now, but the first thing
- 1:23:20Speaker 1: is I want to learn about crops and how they're
- 1:23:24Speaker 1: influencing the deer movement before the crops come out, because
- 1:23:29Speaker 1: I have a couple I had a couple of trail
- 1:23:31Speaker 1: cameras um on some crop field field edges this year
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: that showed a lot of promise. And I gotta learn
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: how to hunt those areas and when to hunt them
- 1:23:43Speaker 1: and just just put a little bit more focus on
- 1:23:47Speaker 1: them on the early season because some of I think
- 1:23:51Speaker 1: I maybe you know, that makes me hop into some
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: of my rut locations too early. If that makes sense, um,
- 1:23:59Speaker 1: So before the crops come out, I really want to
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: take a look at some of those areas. You know,
- 1:24:04Speaker 1: some of these places that once the crops come out,
- 1:24:07Speaker 1: they go into the timber, but while the crops are in,
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: they're living in buffer strips. They're living in these fields
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: or these very small, thin little sections of timber that
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: border or split up some of these big crop fields.
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: And then I also want to learn what the deer
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: are doing that third week of November, maybe leading up
- 1:24:31Speaker 1: to maybe not even uh maybe not even this November,
- 1:24:37Speaker 1: but that first week of December where the the rut
- 1:24:41Speaker 1: is in a kind of a trickling off mode, but
- 1:24:44Speaker 1: the big bucks are still on their feet. I want
- 1:24:47Speaker 1: to learn what the deer are doing and how to
- 1:24:50Speaker 1: hunt during that because I think I'm missing out on
- 1:24:54Speaker 1: some of my farms when it comes to like mature
- 1:25:00Speaker 1: buck movement on those two those two periods of time.
- 1:25:04Speaker 1: So I agree with you a d. When it comes
- 1:25:07Speaker 1: to that, like that third week in November, that kind
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: of time period, I feel like I have done the
- 1:25:11Speaker 1: same thing. Um. That's It's it's tough in Michigan because
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: our gun season opens and that whole third and fourth
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: week and I've ever kind of gets blown out by
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: gun season, but I've always felt like I'm missing out
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: on that opportunity in states like Iowa, Ohio where they
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: don't have that gun season. UM. My challenge has always
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: been that that time period I think can definitely be good,
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: but it's also like I've been hunting for three weeks
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: straight and my wife's about to kill me at that point,
- 1:25:39Speaker 1: so I feel like I need to be taking some
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: time away to spend out family, and then you got Thanksgiving. UM,
- 1:25:46Speaker 1: And I always feel like I just have a hard
- 1:25:48Speaker 1: time finding time to hunt at that point because of that. UM.
- 1:25:52Speaker 1: But man if if I can figure out how to
- 1:25:54Speaker 1: better balance that and still get some hunting opportunity in
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: some of these places, I hud agree with you on
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: figuring that time for about two but we need to
- 1:26:04Speaker 1: wrap things up. I know you've got to get out
- 1:26:06Speaker 1: of here. Dan, We've kind of rambled all over the place.
- 1:26:09Speaker 1: I feel like we've been like going on this thing
- 1:26:11Speaker 1: that thing all over the place. UM. Maybe the moral
- 1:26:16Speaker 1: of the story is that you and I both had
- 1:26:19Speaker 1: a lot of things go well. We also learned a
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: lot from our mistakes. UM, and I gotta believe everyone
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: else out there has had similar situations, whether you killed
- 1:26:29Speaker 1: a bunch of deer and achieved your goals or you didn't. Um,
- 1:26:32Speaker 1: there's there's always something to learn from it. So well,
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: if you had to wrap it up, Dan, for you
- 1:26:37Speaker 1: like your big your top couple of things that we've
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: talked about here. Otherwise, if you're a big couple takeaways
- 1:26:43Speaker 1: from this season, what were those most important things, um,
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: that stand out above everything else? I guess number one
- 1:26:51Speaker 1: would be continue to be fluid, to continue to let
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: the the oh man, the situation like the like the
- 1:27:03Speaker 1: weather or the wind direction or the temperature, or the
- 1:27:08Speaker 1: knowledge you have of off trail cameras, let that dictate
- 1:27:12Speaker 1: your I guess where your stand location is going to be,
- 1:27:16Speaker 1: but then also use your gut to finalize that decision,
- 1:27:20Speaker 1: if that makes sense. And then, um, the other the
- 1:27:24Speaker 1: other thing would be, I don't know, man, just to
- 1:27:29Speaker 1: continue to be observant and keep your eyes open and
- 1:27:32Speaker 1: and if if there is failure, to embrace it, because
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: you don't get better, if you're perfect all the time.
- 1:27:41Speaker 1: That's the truth right there. I agree with that for sure, UM,
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: and I think that that Perris and well to then
- 1:27:49Speaker 1: my big takeaways. Biggest takeaway from me has been not
- 1:27:53Speaker 1: to get blinded by obsession, so so obsessed with killing
- 1:27:57Speaker 1: holy Field this year, I think while that was it
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: was a great goal and it was a fun goal
- 1:28:01Speaker 1: to go after, I think it also caused me to
- 1:28:04Speaker 1: again to overstressed, to overthink, to to miss out on
- 1:28:08Speaker 1: other enjoyable parts of the hunting season. Um, and then
- 1:28:12Speaker 1: also kept me from doing other things that maybe would
- 1:28:15Speaker 1: have resulted in a better opportunities to Like I canceled
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: a great trip to North Dakota, I didn't hunt the
- 1:28:21Speaker 1: Ohio Rout almost at all. UM. So I missed out
- 1:28:24Speaker 1: a lot of things because I was so so so
- 1:28:26Speaker 1: focused on this one thing, which maybe that's a good thing,
- 1:28:28Speaker 1: maybe it's not. UM. And then I think we talked
- 1:28:32Speaker 1: about this a lot, but just UM learning to learn
- 1:28:36Speaker 1: from mistakes but not beat yourself up or overstressed about them.
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: That's a big one. And then the final piece I
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: think for me this year was the issue I just
- 1:28:46Speaker 1: talked about a couple minutes ago, which was location. Like
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: every year too, I'm constantly thinking about trying to find
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: new places. I just need to do an even better job,
- 1:28:55Speaker 1: like I need to just find more opportunities, because there's
- 1:29:00Speaker 1: nothing more important, I think, when it comes right down
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: to it, more important than location. You can't kill mature
- 1:29:05Speaker 1: big bucks if you don't have anywhere to hunt that
- 1:29:07Speaker 1: has them. And uh, that's especially true in a place
- 1:29:11Speaker 1: like Michigan, where they're not everywhere by any means. So
- 1:29:15Speaker 1: I'm gonna be knocking allowed doors or saving up pennies
- 1:29:18Speaker 1: to try to buy up property someday or Lisa property
- 1:29:22Speaker 1: somewhere or something, because you gotta get spots to hunt.
- 1:29:28Speaker 1: So I hear we've been hearing a little person in
- 1:29:31Speaker 1: the background, Dan, do you want to make your son famous? Hey, hey, Mac,
- 1:29:36Speaker 1: can you say talk writing here and say stay wired
- 1:29:39Speaker 1: to hunt? Yeah? That's awesome man. Alright, well, I think
- 1:29:45Speaker 1: that's a perfect way to write it up. Now say
- 1:29:48Speaker 1: say Sai, say the October lull is a myth? Not
- 1:30:00Speaker 1: are we go now a we start talking dirty? All right,
- 1:30:02Speaker 1: we're gone, We're gone, and that we'll do it for us.
- 1:30:06Speaker 1: So big thank you to our partners who make this possible.
- 1:30:10Speaker 1: Big thanks to Sit to Gear, YETI Cooler's Matthews Archery,
- 1:30:13Speaker 1: Maven Optics, the White Tail Institute of North America, Trophy
- 1:30:17Speaker 1: Ridge and hunt Terra maps. And finally, thank you for listening,
- 1:30:21Speaker 1: thanks for being with us. I hope that you had
- 1:30:23Speaker 1: an amazing two thousand seventeen season and hopefully one that
- 1:30:26Speaker 1: you've been able to learn from and that you can
- 1:30:28Speaker 1: take those lessons forward into the next one. So until
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: next time, thanks again, and stay wired to Hunt.
