- 1:21to get to this morning as we continue with the storm damage clean up here
- 1:26in Canawk Candy. Now it's currently raining, but the good news is we
- 1:30just love the flash floodwatch in effect. We so have a lot of people
- 1:34without power, but it looks like the severe weather. By severe, I
- 1:37mean what we saw yesterday ninety some mile per hour wins not a threat today.
- 1:42That is good news. Throughout the show we're going to be and by
- 1:46the way, if this is kind of an open line open text thing,

- 2:04some folks from the city of Charleston coming up a little bit later on.
- 2:07I've got some garbage information I need to get out to you, and then
- 2:09we've actually posted that in several places this morning, just so you know.
- 2:14Also, we have all three Kadan County commissioners on the show today and a
- 2:16little bit later on Delegate Mike Pushkin will be stopping by as well. Let
- 2:21me bring into the show Kaah County Commissioner Kent Carper, who's on the phone
- 2:23with this morning. Commissioner Carper, Good morning, welcome to the show.
- 2:27Thank you, Dave, Good morning. WI sure we're under better circumstances.
- 2:30I also had the other two commissioners in there in studio with me, Commissioner
- 2:36Ben Selango and commission President Lance Wheeler. Good morning, gentlemen. Thank you
- 2:38for being here. I appreciate morning morning. I appreciate you all being here.
- 2:43The Commissioner Carper, let's start with you. You've seen a few of
- 2:46these storms throughout your time in office, but I don't know that we saw
- 2:50anything quite like what we saw yesterday. Maybe maybe the the ratio would come
- 2:54just about as close to your thoughts, well, it would come close,
- 2:59and the last big flood would come closed. But the truth of the matter
- 3:01is your station whs sent up more alarms yesterday than in the history of You're
- 3:07at radio station. I mean, it was constant. This was a tremendous
- 3:15risk for everyone here, and we were very fortunate we didn't have a loss
- 3:19of life. So, no matter what else has said, no matter what
- 3:22else somebody wants to talk about, thank god, we did not lose anybody
- 3:25during this. When you look at some of the signs that went down,
- 3:28for example in Canall City, I mean it was like a giant flyshwater and
- 3:32it had there been a car out in the lot or someone in it,
- 3:36they had been killed. And that was all over the county. Giant trees.
- 3:39Now, why did that happen? I believe that one of the reasons
- 3:44why we didn't have significant loss of life was the warning system. The warning
- 3:49system worked. It worked as well as it's ever worked since we've implemented it.
- 3:53You know, the consolidated nine one one system now is just about twenty
- 3:58years old this year, I believe. And the fact we have every town,
- 4:01every all of our fire departments, all of our police agencies, our
- 4:06MS agencies, all with a unified command, with one consolidated system. In
- 4:13the warning systems we have between the sirens and the ring downs and everything else
- 4:17that we have. It worked. The public was aware once we got we
- 4:21I think we activated the EU seed about nine o'clock and by ten thirty we
- 4:28had a tornado warning, so we were on top of it. When I
- 4:30say we, I get total credit to those that did the work, not
- 4:34me, not us, but them. They did the job. The nine
- 4:38one one people performed splendidly. Yeah, exactly. Commishion President Wheeler and also
- 4:46Commissioner Slango in studio with me this morning. Commissioner Weeler, I know you'll
- 4:47echo the comments of Commissioner Carper. Yeah, we like that. Commissioner Carper
- 4:53said, we received a notification of the massive storm coming in and it wasn't
- 4:57breaking down. You know, we've been following this for the last couple of
- 4:59days, seeing it come across the country and come into Kentucky and we see
- 5:03how the storm was building and building and it wasn't breaking and we immediately,
- 5:09UH send out a WILLA. That's what the text messages, the notifications you
- 5:12see on your phone. We had the sirens go off and C. W.
- 5:15Sigmund, a director of our emergency Management, has been going around last
- 5:19night UH and talking to people, and they've said that the the the sirens
- 5:24saved their life, that they were out with their kids. Uh, they
- 5:27heard the sirens, they got the notification, and they were immediately able to
- 5:30find shelter and uh and and save themselves. And I think that if it
- 5:34wasn't for the siren and and everything from the news whs here sending out the
- 5:39alerts, that storm came in quickly. You know, it was calm,
- 5:43calm, and then ninety miles per hour wind. And so having that announcement
- 5:47that early to tell people get shelter, because people here in Kannall County,
- 5:51and you know southern people, we like to look at the storm as it
- 5:56comes. And so I saw the memes on social media. I'm sure you
- 6:00two people like setting on the store, sitting on the roof, for sitting
- 6:02on the front porch watching, But you're right, that's kind of what we
- 6:04do in Southerwes. And now I'm one of those people. I like to
- 6:08be on my porch watching the rain come in. But you know, when
- 6:10that siren goes off, you know that this is serious and you need to
- 6:13get shelter. And this isn't just residential. This was Daycares this was schools.
- 6:17I mean we saw damage at the Pratt Elementary School with the roof coming
- 6:20off, the rubber roof flowing off because of these winds. If it wasn't
- 6:25for that shelter in place, I think Commissioner Carper's right. We were lucky.
- 6:28We did not have any casualties fatalities yesterday, and if it wasn't for
- 6:31that, we may have. Well. I think there were some very close
- 6:35calls. You know the billboard out in Dunbar that came over onto that guy's
- 6:40car. But you know, when I was I was downtown when the storm
- 6:43hit, and before the siren went off, I was getting text messages about
- 6:47what was coming. I looked outside and Capitol Street was packed. I mean
- 6:50there were people walking around, it was sunny. It was hard to believe
- 6:55that in the next you know, thirty minutes, that we were going to
- 6:57have a storm like that roll in, and it did. But those warning
- 7:00sirens got people off the streets, and I think that's what saved lives.
- 7:03You know, our Metro nine one one did a great job. They filled
- 7:05it over sixteen hundred calls in less than four hours, which if you can
- 7:10imagine that kind of call volume. They did a wonderful job. Our entire
- 7:14team, the city of Charleston did a great job. I know they're firefighters.
- 7:15Their police officers were out, you know, battling this. Our Sheriff's
- 7:19department was out battling this. They did a tremendous job. So hats off
- 7:24to them, mister Carper. Let's go back to you, just for a
- 7:28couple of moments. A herculean effort yesterday, as the other commissioner said,
- 7:32by everybody involved in this. But where are we now? What are you
- 7:36hearing about again? We have rain in the forecast today. We do have
- 7:39a floodwatch, but thankfully nothing like what we saw yesterday. What are you
- 7:44hearing from the various areas out there now, sir? Well, what I'm
- 7:46hearing, and of course been around for a while. People are very concerned
- 7:51about property damage to their home, their business. They're relieved that no one
- 7:57got hurt or killed. When I say no one got hurt, actually several
- 8:01people got hurt. I think we transported seventeen storm related to injuries with the
- 8:05KNAU camer and AMA's authority loan, but none of them appear to be life
- 8:09threatening. So what I'm hearing right now is people wanted to know what to
- 8:13do next. So what we've done and great in the middle this, we
- 8:16were in contact directly with Governor Justice's office, and the governor himself reached out
- 8:24to Kanall County like he does many times, knowing we were getting hit pretty
- 8:28good. So we'll try to go after a FEMA declaration for disaster declaration.
- 8:33We'll see if that will give people aid. But one good thing about a
- 8:37windstorm as opposed to a flood, generally speaking, generally speaking, your insurance
- 8:43will pay for damage for wind damage. So that's a big, huge difference.
- 8:48If you have insurance, you should and you've got wind damage, whether
- 8:52it's your roof, whether it's your fence, whatever it is, you should
- 8:58check and see if you've got insurance arens. That will be very important to
- 9:01make yourself whole again after this terrible storm. Christian Carper, you mentioned that
- 9:07you're one that's been around for a while, You've seen a few of these
- 9:11storms. Just I mean one street over from us here, sir, on
- 9:13Courrier Street down for the music shop, and we're the building that was next
- 9:18to where where Danny Jones had his restaurant. Just to see those bricks out
- 9:22on the street. It was a surreal situation after the storm, Sir,
- 9:26I've never seen anything like that in downtown Charleston. I've seen bad wind damages,
- 9:33I've seen flooding, I've seen all types of things. I've never seen
- 9:37that type of wind damage all over the place. That is frightening. That's
- 9:43one of my persons told me friend that they were frightened over this, and
- 9:48I'd be frightened too. They were down there when the bricks were raining down
- 9:52on their car. Yeah. I mean again, floods are and we've certainly
- 9:56seen our share of a fair share of West Virginia, gentlemen. But floods
- 10:00are one thing, as Commissioner Carper said, but when it comes to flying
- 10:03debris and things of that nature, you can avoid water to a certain extent,
- 10:07but couldn't avoid what we saw you afterday Ben, and I don't remember
- 10:11there being structural damage from the Durraicho from whenever that was ten, twelve,
- 10:13fifteen years. I don't remember there being any buildings come down, but we've
- 10:18had. You know, you look at what happened to South Charleston. You
- 10:20know the stamp, the roof came off, Joey Hollins's new construction over there
- 10:26had significant damage lots of trees, which happened during the last Duaicho, but
- 10:31this one seemed to pack a bigger punch, at least when it first rolled
- 10:37into Charleston. When I saw it, and I had not seen structural damage
- 10:41to buildings, the old Stone and Thomas building down on Lee Street, the
- 10:43windows were blown out. One of my friends who has a law office downtown
- 10:50windows blew out and actually created like a vacuum effect in his office and pulled
- 10:54a door off the hinges jees, which you know, we hadn't seen that
- 10:58before. I mean, I mean, go ahead, Commission Carper, No
- 11:01we haven't, and then why don't you let him know what the status says
- 11:05of shawn A. We've never seen a thing like that before. No,
- 11:09yeah, it's it was a lot worse than what I first thought. We
- 11:13you know, we've got four scoreboards on our front soccer fields, three of
- 11:18the four on the ground right now, our flag poles over which is easily
- 11:22fixed. But we've got turf damage. We have fenced damage. The perimeter
- 11:26fence is down. There is a lot of a lot of work, and
- 11:31we've got a major tournament coming in this weekend, two inner teams, teams
- 11:33flying in from Canada. You know, it's going to be a ten to
- 11:37twelve million dollar event. So we're out there working right now trying to get
- 11:41it, you know, ready for play, and that tournament is going to
- 11:43go on. It's going on as you know. Yeah, Kent. On
- 11:46the baseball side, we lost the roof on a dugout or two, which
- 11:50you know they're going to try to fix. Got some trees down. But
- 11:54but the goal is right now we're going to play the tournament because I think
- 11:58it's still operational. The facility is still operate, rational and the turf.
- 12:01The issues with the turf is not actually on the playing surface, it's outside
- 12:03of the playing surface. So hopefully we'll be able to prevent injuries. We'll
- 12:07just put cones up around those. Yeah, I mean, it's amazing.
- 12:11Commissioner Wheeler, President Wheeler. Uh. You know when we talk about the
- 12:16recovery, you know, people ask me about these disasters, and I always
- 12:18say, the real work comes after the storm's passed. And I think we're
- 12:22seeing that today. We're seeing that here in the next couple of days and
- 12:24even weeks. But you know, when we talk about Shawnee, we talk
- 12:28about, you know, the destruction on some of these buildings. One of
- 12:31the things that we're going to be focusing on is making sure that we get
- 12:35that declaration from the FEMA so we can get assistance to the people of Kennell
- 12:39County as soon as possible. I was on the phone this morning with C.
- 12:41W. Sigmund with Emergency Management Kennell County and he tells me that we've
- 12:46already been in touch with the state Jim Justice's Office and Emergency Management of the
- 12:50state will be working with us and hopefully working with the Red Cross. We're
- 12:52going to get a survey done to be able to go out and assess some
- 12:56of the damage. So to the listeners out there, if you have anyone
- 13:00and it comes to your front steps or your property asking you about a survey,
- 13:03please answer this because this is the evidence that we used moving forward for
- 13:07the federal government to come in with FEMA for that assistance. You know,
- 13:11we see the damage, as Commissioner Slango and Krper has been mentioning about.
- 13:16You know, you can see it, and you know how devastating this dorm
- 13:18was. But we have to prove this in DC, and so we have
- 13:22to have this evidence ready and the sooner we can collect this evidence and show
- 13:26how much damage was really done and why it's important for FEMA to come in
- 13:30here with some small business loans and just general assistance with the public. You
- 13:35know, let's talk about the utilities. You know, we were having water
- 13:39and sewer facilities calling Metro saying, hey, we're running on generator right now,
- 13:43but we don't know how long we can run on it, and if
- 13:45we lose the generator, the whole plant will go down. I mean,
- 13:48these were some of the things that Metro nine on one was working, and
- 13:50I was fortunate enough to see it firsthand, being in there with our telecommunicators
- 13:56taking these calls. And the best way I can describe this as organized chaos.
- 14:00I mean, there's no other way that they were able to handle the
- 14:03sixteen hundred calls in four hours, as Commissioner Slango mentioned, and being able
- 14:07to talk people through get their emergency prioritize it. We were getting a lot
- 14:11of people calling Metro just to tell us, hey, my neighbor's fence fell
- 14:16over, and of course we're understanding that you want to call Metro now on
- 14:20one to tell us that, but we have to prioritize some of these calls
- 14:22because we were having entrapments, we were having roads were blocked. We were
- 14:26trying to list those to get those the Department of Highways so we can get
- 14:30those roads open. We were trying to work with the school system to make
- 14:33sure that you know, let's say a school bus goes out and tries to
- 14:35take a kid home and the road's blocked, and we had commit I was
- 14:39on the air late yesterday afternoon with Jeff Jenkins. We had Superintendent Schools Tom
- 14:43Williams on and we had that very situation there yesterday where there were places that
- 14:48they just couldn't know the parents or and or the school bus is just simply
- 14:52couldn't get to those areas. And we were working with the school system with
- 14:56that, making sure that if the school bus had to go back and a
- 14:58parent could not come and pick up the kid, what's there going to be
- 15:01food? There was there going to be power at the school? You know,
- 15:03we were working with those logistics. There was a lot of moving parts
- 15:07going on, and I think it again the accomplishment of what we saw from
- 15:11our first responders and Metro Namu one yesterday really just shows how important it is
- 15:16that we continue these investments that we've been doing. And in the sirens,
- 15:20in the Metro namin one, in our employees, I'm proud of everything that
- 15:24they did, and I know I can speak as the commission We're very proud
- 15:26of them. Now we've got a lot of clean up to go, and
- 15:30the Governor is due to do a media briefing at eleven o'clock this morning that
- 15:33I'm sure he is going to address that Commissioner Carper before we let you go,
- 15:37because I know you get some things to do. Any final words from
- 15:39U, sir, Well, what we do now, following our normal protocol,
- 15:43is we will establish the telephone number we will have. Our folks will
- 15:48be going out doing damage assessments. We will be working with the FEMA and
- 15:52the state, our partners Red Cross whoever. We will be sending the number
- 15:58out and if any every one is listening to us right now and is in
- 16:02distress, they don't have electric and they feel that they're in danger, their
- 16:07parents are elderly, no one's taking care of them, then just call nine
- 16:11one one. I got in trouble one time for that I know a little
- 16:15bit about the nine one one system. That's what it's for. So if
- 16:18you've got someone in distress over this storm, or you can't get to them,
- 16:22or you're worried about them, or you just don't know what to do,
- 16:26just call nine one one and we'll send somebody. All right, Commission
- 16:29Carper, I appreciate you joining us this morning. As I said, you're
- 16:33a veteran of this sort of stuff. I appreciate you being here. Thanks
- 16:34a lot, seeing too much to be honest about it. All right,
- 16:37Thank you, Commission KNT Carper. It is nine to twenty three. Text

- 19:36Deserver rays have better benefits. While we're at it, Well, the guys
- 19:38who can do that are now I'm just kidding right now, I do have
- 19:41the county commissioners. I have two of the of the three left, I
- 19:45have been Selango and commissioned Preident Lance Wheeler. We're going to get to Matt
- 19:48Sutton, chief of staff for the Goodwin administration, coming up momentarily, plus
- 19:52a little bit later on Delegate Mike Pushkin will be stopping my guys. I
- 19:56know you guys have got some clean up and things that you've got to get
- 19:57to. Want to give you tity to say any final words go ahead.
- 20:00Well, first of all, I agree with whoever texted that that our telecommunicators
- 20:04need to need to raise But let me say this. You know, Commissioner
- 20:07Carper and Commissioner Wheeler have worked very hard to make sure that the retirement bill
- 20:12went through this year, so that is that was a big, big event
- 20:17for them, so now they actually have retirement. We've had a lot of
- 20:19trouble of retaining nine one one telecommunicators. It's an incredibly stressful job, very
- 20:25difficult job, as they you saw from yesterday. And I think they even
- 20:27did a little video from inside command center yesterday while they were doing that,
- 20:33so, you know, we appreciate all them. It's remarkable that we didn't
- 20:37have any fatalities yesterday. When that came through, I thought we were going
- 20:41to have some. I attribute that to our first responders in that warning system
- 20:47that we had. Yeah, and I was actually in the building yesterday and
- 20:51heard the I mean, I'll tell my story a little bit later on,
- 20:55but yesterday, I mean, because you always, you know, we always
- 20:59let people know when we're doing and the testing of those of those tornado sirens,
- 21:03but to hear them for real yesterday, it was like, oh crap,
- 21:06this is the real thing, you know, So it definitely they definitely
- 21:10did their job yesterday. And let me throw this out here, real quick
- 21:11because I talked to Matt Sutton about this a little bit earlier to get Matt's
- 21:15standing by get the MMA in a couple of moments. As it pertains to
- 21:18trash service in Charleston and this is in Kanas City, the crews are out
- 21:22doing their best. It's business as usual, as the mayor put it,
- 21:23when it comes to trash pick up in Kanas City. But there are some
- 21:26streets and alleys that may be blocked. They're going to do their best to
- 21:30try to get to those. If they don't get to them because of that,
- 21:33they're making a note and they will go back and take care of that.
- 21:34Trash Service Commission President Wheeler Well, speaking of trash, this is something
- 21:38we already had scheduled on the books and it's kind of going to work out
- 21:41for the timing of it. But we're going to have our spring clean up.
- 21:45The Conk County Commission always has a spring and fall clean up. A
- 21:48lot of people are aware of it and it's something that we get asked about
- 21:52day in and day out. And so actually this Saturday, April sixth,
- 21:56in Sissonville, located in Cistonville Drive Hasdor Road, we're going to be having
- 22:02our spring clean up. It's going to be from eight am to four pm.
- 22:06We're going to be taking solid waste, large appliances, air conditioners,
- 22:10computers, metals, car batteries, electronics. The only thing we're asking people
- 22:15that they cannot bring is gas pro paint tanks, hadra's weights, paint chemicals,
- 22:21or motor oil. So if it's not one of those that I just
- 22:22listed that we cannot accept, you can bring it. It's free of charge.
- 22:27We get a lot of people that come out to these, so we
- 22:30always ask people to come early because I think we're going to see a large
- 22:33line, especially due to all the destruction we saw from the storm yesterday.
- 22:37But this is just an excellent opportunity that the can All kind of Commission always
- 22:40offers for people to be able to get some of this trash and debris moved
- 22:45away. You know, we originally do this to make sure that this trash
- 22:48doesn't end up in rivers and embankments, you know, causing more flooding.
- 22:52This is just the way to clean up the county and so no questions asked.
- 22:56Come bring a driver's license to make sure that we can verify you.
- 23:00And if you've got recyclables or trash. We'll take care of the cleanup.
- 23:04All right, guys, I appreciate you being here. Thanks a lot.
- 23:07One thing I did want to ask you guys in this. I want to
- 23:10catch you off guard on this. But the announce this is totally unrelated to
- 23:12the storm yesterday. The announcement became official yesterday that the postal facility is going
- 23:18to be closing. I'm going to a conspiracy theorist that I am saying,
- 23:22Well, we've got all this storm activity going on, and they decided to
- 23:26put that release out there yesterday in the middle of all this. Maybe it
- 23:29was just a coincidence. I don't know, but it was made official that
- 23:32that postal facility will be closing, despite the public meetings, despite the work
- 23:36of Senator Mansion and Capital, it is going to be closing. Any comments
- 23:38from me to one of you. You know, we worked with Senator Mansion
- 23:41and Senator Capitol's office on this. We sent numerous letters. This was something
- 23:45that outside of the control of Kennall County Commission. This is a federal matter,
- 23:51but we did everything we can to voice our input. I know Commissioner
- 23:53Slango was working hand in hand on this. One and having conversations with the
- 23:59union and working with some of the employees and the offices. But you know,
- 24:03this is just another another moment where we're losing opportunity. When we gain
- 24:07opportunity, you know, sometimes it feels like two steps forward, one step
- 24:11back. So uh though that this announcement was made, rest assured can all
- 24:15count Commission will continue to fight because nothing's permanent in the federal government and decisions,
- 24:19and we can always continue to fight and see if we can bring that
- 24:22back. All right, guys, I will leave it there. I appreciate
- 24:26you guys being here. Thanks a lot, Thanks very thanks as Commissioner's Commission
- 24:30President Lance Wheeler and Comic Commission Bensilango. Also earlier, mister Kent Carper,
- 24:34thanks guys for being here. Now, now get to work because you've got
- 24:37a lot of work to do. Now, speaking of a lot of work,
- 24:38let me well, let me cover this first to Dave Valan showing five
- 24:41Eybe Live. Is brought to part by General Hardware of Windfield and Milton and
- 24:45General Number of Windfield. If you're planning a project the spring, please shop
- 24:48locally. They're also doing some hiring. Stop by any location for details as
- 24:51a general hardware WV dot com from the Good One Administration Chief of Staff Matt
- 24:55Sutton is here. Matt, good morning, Welcome to the show. Good
- 24:56morning, Good morning. I do want to before we get to the storm
- 25:00to echo the comments about the Postal Service. And we were obviously very busy
- 25:06yesterday, so I'll go ahead and quote Center Capito when she said, with
- 25:10over twenty eight hundred public comments submitted by West Virginians, I do wish USPS
- 25:14had listened and taken those concernants into account fully. I think we echo that
- 25:18as well. I mean, there were the mayor was at a lot of
- 25:21those meetings and was out with the union. The post a union a lot,
- 25:23and it Center Capital of the Center Mansion worked very hard on Disappointed.
- 25:27Didn't seem like they listened, but it also seems like they're still going to
- 25:30fight. So what the commission said, well, we'll be sitting in that
- 25:33fight with them as well. Well. The union president said. And by
- 25:37the way, we have a story posted about a WV Metro News dot com
- 25:40the union president said something to the effect of, we don't consider this a
- 25:42defeat. It's just a little bit of a setback. So I read that
- 25:45this morning. We have to see what happens about that. But again the
- 25:48story's posted on that at wv metro news dot com. What a day Matthew
- 25:52and the City of Charleston yesterday, it was a day I will echo exactly.
- 25:56I won't go back through it. That ill echo what the county commissioner
- 25:59said, and that the alarm system worked perfectly. You know, I think
- 26:03that we were all kind of planning on it for a little later in the
- 26:04day and then all of a sudden, here it was. And so I
- 26:08was literally standing over in the in the street over on the west side talking
- 26:11to a friend of mine, and they were like, what are these sirens?
- 26:14I said, they mean you need to go inside. I mean you
- 26:17need to go inside, and got back to the city hall. Course,
- 26:18I was one of those people that was kind of like, well, let
- 26:19me stand out here look at this for a little bit. And then the
- 26:22wind came and then it was to get inside. But it was tremendous communication,
- 26:26and I think not only to the public with the sirens and with the
- 26:29text messages, but also internally because one thing to think about is is we
- 26:33had this shelter in place that also means that that is everybody. So that
- 26:37meant our police department was sheltered in place, our fire department was sheltered in
- 26:40place, our street department, and what we needed was some kind of assurance
- 26:44that when they could go back out, when could they get back out into
- 26:47the streets. And that was again all the credit in the world to the
- 26:49Metro nine one one and especially c W Sigmun because I can remember the mayor
- 26:53saying very vividly to somebody who said, can we go, And she said,
- 26:56we'll go when CW tells us we can go. And that's how which
- 27:00we all trust each other and trust CW in these situations. And because you
- 27:03know, once the storm was clear enough for our street departments to get out,
- 27:07our fire department to get out, our police department to get out,
- 27:10it was just one of those really eerie moments where everything was very quiet and
- 27:14then it got really noisy once everybody got to get out into the streets and
- 27:18assessed the damage. Again, thankfully no major injuries, but we have a
- 27:22lot of cleanup to do today. A couple things for me to hit on
- 27:26I hate to read on the air, Dave, you know that, but
- 27:27a couple of them that I better go ahead and do. The Canal City
- 27:30Rec Center is closed today due to a power outage, so that's not going
- 27:33to be open to folks. Everybody else is. Yesterday we had nor Charleston
- 27:37Rec Center was down for a little bit, but it has power today.
- 27:40So the can All City Community Center is closed. You already hit on the
- 27:42trash service that will continue as is, and as it relates to down power
- 27:48lines and trees, our crews are out working diligently to remove the storm debris
- 27:53removal, but please be patient. If new issues have come up that you
- 27:57haven't already called about, please call three four three four eight six eight five
- 28:02zero. If there are active power lines involved, please call nine one one.
- 28:07If not, it's just a tree or something in the road, please
- 28:11call us through that. Don't touch down power lines, and most importantly understand
- 28:15the patients. We can get very quickly to down trees and roads, and
- 28:19especially major roads, we can get to them very quickly assuming there are power
- 28:22lines involved. When there are power lines involved, that's when it slows down
- 28:26in process a little bit. Obviously, the power company is working as fast
- 28:29as they can, but we most of I will say most of the tree
- 28:33damage we had yesterday involved some kind of power line. It's just how it
- 28:36operates and how it works. So it's going to be a day of assessment.
- 28:38The mayor's heading into Kanas City right now. She's out with our public
- 28:42work folks trying to figure out exactly the damage and how we can get it
- 28:48cleaned up as fast as we can, but really and truly communicating with us,
- 28:51communicating with the county and letting us know where the debris is, but
- 28:55understanding that when there are power lines involved, that we've got to take all
- 28:57precautions to make sure that we don't harm anybody or cause more damage. It's
- 29:02already there, you know something. And again we're talking with good when Chieve
- 29:04of Staff Matt Sutton. One of the things that occurred to me, Matt
- 29:07last night was we live and not to be too philosophical, but we live
- 29:11in an era where we're all connected now, you know, and we have
- 29:15the emergency systems that we talked about. Everybody gets alerts on their phones and
- 29:18so on and so forth. But even over the last thirty or forty years,
- 29:22you know, we've had the emergency what I know is the old emergency
- 29:25broadcast system, which is now the emergency alert system, and so very few
- 29:29weather phenomenons take us by surprise, as they did once before, one of
- 29:37the one of the good things of technology. But imagine, you know,
- 29:41again, this means absolutely nothing to anybody but me, But I think about
- 29:45these things. Imagine what this would have been seventy eighty years ago. I
- 29:47mean, with this kind of a storm that rolled in because this is and
- 29:51I think in talking to me the urologist Brian Hughes and Spencer Adkins and some
- 29:53of these weather folks that are a lot more knowledgeable about this what you and
- 29:56I are, this is going to be one that they're going to be studying
- 30:00for a long time because very rarely do we have quote unquote pardon upon the
- 30:06perfect storm, and that's what this was yesterday. They started predicting this thing
- 30:10last week, saying we got concerns about Tuesday, and then we're focusing on
- 30:15the storm here, Matt that hit Charleston, you know, around you know,
- 30:18ten forty five to eleven fifteen or so yesterday morning, the clean up
- 30:22there after. But even last night, this system persisted. I was watching
- 30:26television last night and watching the coverage in areas like Siota County, Ohio,
- 30:30and Pike County, Ohio and in those places. So this was a big,
- 30:33old weather system and we're still seeing issues out of it now, not
- 30:38nearly thankfully what we did yesterday, but we still have the floodwatch. We're
- 30:42expecting, I mean the wind, and so when I left my house this
- 30:45morning at seven o'clock, the wind woul knock you down out there still this
- 30:48morning. This one there that they're gonna be looking at for a while.
- 30:51Yeah, it's gonna be I mean, it's something that people will and I
- 30:53know that's essentially what happened after the Dray Show as well. Right, it's
- 30:57to study to prepare for the next and I think that's what we're really good
- 31:02at, and that's what we need to do. I mean you say that,
- 31:03like I when this kind of sort of came up on us, and
- 31:07I think everybody was ready for it. But then, of course, you
- 31:11know, you can always say you're ready for it, and then in the
- 31:12minutes that it happens, you're nobody's ever ready for it. But you know,
- 31:15I have friends that I played tennis with that lived down in Ashland,
- 31:18Kentucky, and I was texting them to see what was going on down there,
- 31:19because they, you know, touched down there first and just to follow
- 31:23the storm and how quickly it got from there to hear. And you know,
- 31:27I don't really you know, I'm with you. I prefer not to
- 31:30think about what happens if we didn't have the alerts, because I think it
- 31:33would have been devastating. I mean, it really would have been. Because
- 31:37you know, it is funny to see the memes that you reference were you
- 31:40know, we're all standing out in the street, but that's how we are.
- 31:41We all know it. It's only funny because it's true. And we
- 31:45have been sitting there looking at the looking at the storm I mentioned during our
- 31:48coverage yesterday afternoon, and I kind of stuck around and helped Jeff and the
- 31:51folks out a little bit yesterday. My yesterday afternoon, I was upstairs and
- 31:55our morning guy on our sister station, Superstar Country ninety six to one KWS
- 32:00Real, Rob is from Indiana, and Rob and I were setting in his
- 32:02office up there, which is on the I guess would could be considered the
- 32:07third floor here, and there's a window that overlooks a parking lot and now
- 32:12of course, you look out that window. You see a power pole that's
- 32:14bent sideways out that window right now. But we were up there and just
- 32:17kind of being radio guys, laughing and joking and whatever. And then I
- 32:21saw Rob get up and I saw him look out the window and he looked
- 32:24at me and said, it's time to go to the basement. I said,
- 32:27all right, Well, when the guy from Indiana looks at me and
- 32:30says it's time to go to the basement, it's time to go to the
- 32:31basement. Yeah, Because we were just kind of laughing, not really laughing
- 32:35at all, but just kind of okay, well, well for the storm
- 32:37to pass. And when Rob Real, who's from Indiana, says we need
- 32:40to get downstairs, and I'm gonna listen to what he has to say,
- 32:44I would say. My wife was on an airplane and was out at Jager
- 32:47and sitting in an airplane and when the sirens were going off, and she
- 32:52called and said, what's going on us it's a tornado warning? Where are
- 32:54you? She said, I'm sitting on the airplane. I said, we'll
- 32:57get off. Get off, and so she said, okay, let me
- 33:00see what's going on. And then two minutes later, she texted me,
- 33:01and she goes, I can't they just shut the door instead, We're leaving,
- 33:04and I mean they probably left ninety seconds before everything hit. Literally,
- 33:07she said, the pilot just said, we're getting out of here, folks,
- 33:10let's go. So, I mean, everybody's going to have those stores.
- 33:14But in that, I think is the kind of the amazing part I
- 33:16was. I was kind of looking out in the street. I was like,
- 33:17this is weird, Like I don't really see anything, and then all
- 33:20of a sudden you felt the wind. And that's that's the kicker. I
- 33:22mean, you know, I think you kind of alluded to it earlier.
- 33:24You know, water is, water crosses a lot of damage, and flooding
- 33:28obviously has devastated many of our communities, including Charleston and key parts of Charleston
- 33:34over on the west side and others, and you know, we always have
- 33:36flooding issues. But the wind was was really what it was because there's no
- 33:39hiding from that, and it was just to kind of look down and see
- 33:43what had happened. When it was all over, we had the you know,
- 33:45the billboard flew off over in the in Kanall City there about thirty fifth
- 33:49Street bridge. We weren't sure when it first initially happened whether it had had
- 33:52crushed the Windy's building and could somebody be inside, But getting there was hard
- 33:57because there were so many, so many roads that were blocked. So being
- 34:00able to find that out, you know, we had. We have damage
- 34:02obviously, what happened on Courier Street that you allude to earlier, with the
- 34:06bricks coming off the building, all those things could have happened with somebody underneath
- 34:09them and didn't. And so that's the that's the key to all this.
- 34:13We can fix stuff. It's gonna take us some time, but we're out
- 34:15there working hard. I know our folks are out there, and we do
- 34:19appreciate everything from the county commissioner to the Governor's office to all of our I
- 34:22could see the I know you got delicate push can come in here, who
- 34:25was checking on us all day yesterday and asking how they can help. Like,
- 34:30we have an amazing community, and I think that's the that's the one
- 34:32thing that we can always lean on. I only know what I know.
- 34:35I've worked in Charleston and Kennall County in West Virginia my entire life. Man,
- 34:38nobody comes together better and it's all personal differences aside or whatever it is.
- 34:42It's all about helping people and that that kicked into gear yesterday and it
- 34:45was it was as flawless as it could be given the circumstances. That's the
- 34:50best way I could put it. And and again that you know, thanks
- 34:52to everybody out at Metro because they took a lot of calls because the radios
- 34:55were dead silent until they weren't and then they were on and we can just
- 35:00you know. And then also I think this is also a time where when
- 35:02you have really active members and elected officiers in community, because we just started
- 35:07text chains with city council members. Goes just you tell us what you're here
- 35:08and get it to us one central location. We put everything into our system
- 35:12and got it out and that really worked well yesterday with a lot of our
- 35:15council folks who were just saying, you know, please please don't. It's
- 35:19not a Facebook time. This is a time to gather information and send it
- 35:22to us so that we can assess what's really going on out there, because
- 35:24and I thought we saw a lot of that yesterday because the last thing you
- 35:27want to do in those type of situations yesterday is to get into a social
- 35:30media battle where people were you know, I know there were fake photos flying
- 35:34around and all kinds of stuff. We saw a few of those. Yeah,
- 35:36we don't that's not necessary. There's enough real damage out there. But
- 35:38real communication was the key, and that's what we had yesterday. And now
- 35:42it's just it's gonna be a lot of work. The rain's not going to
- 35:44help anything and the clean up. But it's better than what we saw yesterday.

- 38:45also has a clean up this weekend in Kanas City and South Hills in particular.
- 38:50That was already scheduled for Saturday, April sixtard and nine am. That
- 38:53was supposed to last till one, but my guess is it's going to last
- 38:55a lot longer this year. You can come to the Canall City Rec Center
- 38:59and pick up supply. You can use those at your home as well,
- 39:00or go around the streets and pick up These historically have been ones where we,

- 39:08also be a great opportunity if you do have debris, or you do have
- 39:12stuff that you need to get out of your alleys or out of your streets,
- 39:15just bag it up, put it there. Our refuse drivers will be
- 39:16out there picking up everything that we can. Hopefully you know the power obviously,
- 39:21and the streets will be clean clearer by then. But Saturday, April

- 40:00here's the funny story about mister Pushkin. He was scheduled to be on with
- 40:01Dave Wilson, who's in for Hoppy this week on talk Line and that I
- 40:07guess, Scott, what was your situation? Were you about to go on
- 40:08or had you got I was upstairs. I didn't even know you were in
- 40:10the building. I was exactly where you are sitting right now, so possibly
- 40:14the safest place to be in the entire state, in Dave Allen's chair.
- 40:20But so you didn't make the appearance yesterdayn Wilson is that I was on for
- 40:22a few minutes and then I was on the air when the when the gust
- 40:25of wind came through and the power went out. So now you're coming back
- 40:30on Wilson today? Are you gonna be on the show? Yeah? He
- 40:31invited me back on, very nice back on. Yeah. I was.
- 40:37You know, I'm like, I was on my way here. I guess
- 40:40I like live under a rock. I was not like a lot of people.
- 40:44I wasn't aware of what was coming. And I was on my way
- 40:46here and my phone started going off and you know, driving but glanced at
- 40:51it, saw what was going on, and then the you know, the
- 40:53warning sirens started going off. I was like actually driving right by them on
- 40:58the on the boulevard as they were going off. And this is not good.
- 41:02But you know what a credit to everybody. First of all, you
- 41:06just had Matt Sutton on them to see at Charleston, they have done a
- 41:08tremendous job and and you know, first assessing the damage and now with the
- 41:15cleanup, and we can't say enough good things about the refuse department, Streets
- 41:19Department, our first responders, the Charleston Police Department, fire department, They're
- 41:23just doing a tremendous job. Right now, on my way in, I
- 41:25passed the commissioners the County is doing an excellent job, and there's a great
- 41:30job going on across the state, an effort to clean up after this just
- 41:35you know, crazy weather event that we had yesterday. Yeah. Yeah,
- 41:38I was on my way here and luckily got into the building right before you
- 41:44know that it hit. Yeah, and you know you got to hang out
- 41:47with us for a little bit yesterday once we came out of the basement wall
- 41:52coup. And you're sitting in the green room yesterday till it was all over.
- 41:54Yeah. For some reason, I wasn't allowed in the basement, So
- 41:57good thing it did. But I had and I would have the privileged honor
- 42:01of sheltering in place for a little while. I would have allowed you in
- 42:05the basement had I known you were here. I didn't even know you were
- 42:07here. But Dave Aland show on five Any Live Brides you by Morgan to

- 42:14people dot com. Text of the show says gas prices jump twenty cents overnight.
- 42:19Who does want to talk to about price gouging? The Attorney General?
- 42:22I guess the attorney generally they used to they should have a Consumer Protection Department
- 42:28division there and uh yeah, that's who one would talk to about price gouging.
- 42:31Let me ask you about this, and because I ask all the other
- 42:34people that were here as well. Despite the efforts of many elected officials and
- 42:37people from the community, the postal facility out of South Ridge is closing.
- 42:43But again got some a little bit of hope in talking to the commissioners and
- 42:47talking to Matt Sutton this morning that maybe they just are sending it as a
- 42:51bump in the road that are going to continue to fight this thing. Your
- 42:53thoughts, I'm with them, We're going to continue to fight this thing.
- 42:55And I got that email yesterday as well as incredibly disappointing after all of the
- 43:01public outpouring of support for that facility up there in South Ridge, that the
- 43:07US Postal Services is continuing to go down this route. We need to keep
- 43:12our facility here in West Virginia. We do not want it to move to
- 43:15Pennsylvania. We want it right here, and we will continue to fight whatever
- 43:21we can to hopefully change their minds. Hopefully that's the case. We're going
- 43:24to continue with Mike Pushkin after the break. I do want to throw this
- 43:28out there. Originally I had other guests scheduled for the Pushkin was already scheduled,
- 43:31but I had Leslie Grace, who's a candidate for magistrate in Kanawha County,
- 43:37and I talked to Leslie yesterday. Leslie will be on the show now
- 43:42Monday instead to talk about the Grace for magistrate campaign. Also, I had
- 43:46Mark Curtis scheduled to be on the show today. Mark Curtis, political reporter
- 43:50from WWK TV thirteen. They're doing a goobernatorial debate tonight. Michael out to
- 43:55know whether you knew that or not? Is that tonight the for I think?
- 43:58I think so? Yeah, the for mature candidates are are scheduled for
- 44:01that, and we're major can what about my candidate won't be on? Well,
- 44:05this is the Republican candid Yeah, Steve Williams will be on a future
- 44:08one. I'm sure this is the four major Republican candidates that are on.
- 44:13That is. I think Amanda Baron is going to be serving as the master
- 44:16of ceremonies for lack of a better ring leader, whatever the case may be,
- 44:21for that, So Mark Curtis, graciously, I text Mark Anston,
- 44:24I think we need to talk about storm damage today. But get a chance,
- 44:27you may want to tune into night and check that out because it's going
- 44:30to be interesting to see. I'm sure you'll be watching. What time is
- 44:34that? Thanks seven? I think so, I'll set the VCR. I'm
- 44:37sure you will. But Dave Aland showing five any line Browns you fired by

- 47:47with what are you hearing as far as storm clean up from your constituents.
- 47:51I know that you're a guy that's always on the phone checking on your people.
- 47:52What are you hearing? Yeah, I mean I've gotten a lot of
- 47:54calls over the past, you know, past twenty four hours, like like
- 48:00a lot of us have, and just trying to make sure everybody's okay.
- 48:01Luckily, you know, lucky. And it's really nothing short of a miracle,
- 48:06uh that there were so few injuries reported. I mean, if you
- 48:10look at the what happened right right in the middle of the district, I
- 48:14represent, right over on Quarrier Street with all those bricks blowing off the top
- 48:16of a building, and you know nobody was hurt there. That's a miracle.
- 48:20And with all the damage you're seeing I think there as far as the
- 48:23county wide goes, in this county, it looks like most of the damage
- 48:28was in Dunbar, South Hills and can Asoit. A lot of people without
- 48:32power, to a lot of people without power, with a lot of folks
- 48:36on the east end. Some some residences on the west side, I believe,
- 48:39are still without power, and across the across the state we have you
- 48:43know, thousands, yeah, out power. And you know what we're being
- 48:46told is it could be as late as tomorrow night. Well, and I
- 48:51think, but I think that's like a worst case scenarios. Yeah, but
- 48:53and I think, and we want what we want people to understand too,
- 48:57is I mean, everybody, I've been without power during the in the ratio,
- 49:00even though I didn't live in Charleston, we were without power for over
- 49:01a week, and everybody wants some power restore. But you got to do
- 49:05it when it's safe. And that's the thing. You can't put the workers
- 49:07at risk. And right now, we still got some pretty and not what
- 49:10we had yesterday. Don't get me wrong, but we still got some pretty
- 49:14stiff wins out there, and there's rain and it's just not a safe situation
- 49:17for the workers to be out there. I want to ask you about this
- 49:22press conference you guys held a couple days ago. I'm talking about it.
- 49:24It seems like a week ago. It just happened with the Democrats, but
- 49:29I do have a text for you, says Mike. I'm pretty conservative,
- 49:30so I don't vote them anymore. That's said to have a super majority like
- 49:35the Republicans do. It sickens me the lack of real legislation getting done on
- 49:38things such as foster care and adoptive services. Do they realize voters are starting
- 49:43to get fed up. I know you have fought for some of these things,
- 49:45and I appreciate it. I just want meaningful legislation. Well, I
- 49:49think we all do, and I think the West Virginians deserve that. I
- 49:52don't think any you know any secret that West Virginia has a whole host of
- 49:57very important issues that need to be addressed, and in this legislative session was
- 50:01far from serious. Unfortunately it was. They took up all the time arguing
- 50:07over these hot button culture war type issues because it's an election year, many
- 50:12of them are in primaries and they're trying to, you know, push each
- 50:15other further to the extreme. Right, But West Virginia needs us to take
- 50:20up things like childcare, like a foster care. We need to But that
- 50:25was that was basically the point of our press conference the other day. We're
- 50:29going into a special session. We have a budget that we know is just
- 50:34falling way short of the needs of West Virginians. We need to readdress that
- 50:37budget. And that was really the point that we were trying to make.
- 50:40Let's stick to what's important. Let's not waste time during a special session,
- 50:45you know, on the taxpayer's dime. Let's not waste time with all these
- 50:50divisive culture war issues. That was our messages House Democrats and to your Texter,
- 50:54say, you reconsider that that position of never voting Democratic because it looks
- 51:00like lately we've been the adults in the room and we've been the ones fighting
- 51:06for working on common sense legislation that's actually needed. Unfortunately, when you have
- 51:09a supermajority, oftentimes they don't do what's needed. They just do what they
- 51:13want, and we need to do what's needed. Well, the text said,
- 51:17just for clarification that the person doesn't vote them anymore. I didn't say
- 51:22never, They just said they just didn't vote anymore. So I mean they
- 51:24could. And this is what I've told my Republican brethren. As easily as
- 51:29you got it, you can lose it. Nobody ever thought that the Democrats
- 51:31would lose control after eighty three years either, but they did, and it
- 51:36can do it just as easily turned around it. Maybe I don't think it's
- 51:37going to take that long. Well, if they keep it up, it's
- 51:42what they're doing. I hope people would soon realize that they're not doing the
- 51:45job that needs to be done. And when you're wasting time with meaningless issues.
- 51:50A lot of them didn't even pass. A lot of the culture worse
- 51:52stuff, you know, luckily didn't even pass, but it still took up
- 51:54a lot of time, and we weren't able to address things like access and
- 51:59affordable of childcare, which is a workforce participation issue. That is something that
- 52:05is keeping people out of the workforce, keeping people from moving, keeping businesses
- 52:08from moving. Here is the lack of affordability access to childcare. Now.
- 52:13I could go on, but I hear the music plank. All right,
- 52:15Mike. I appreciate you being here, man, thanks you for a lot,
- 52:17and I know that you've, as I said, you've been in contact
- 52:20with your constituents and you're going to get right back out there at it.
- 52:22So I appreciate you taking time at your schedule to honor your appearance this morning
