- 0:00Hey everyone, welcome back to the Layback Podcast.
- 0:03Joining us today is fifth year at University of Toledo
- 0:08right-handed pitcher Logan Dan Sizen.
- 0:11Logan previously spent time at Purdue University.
- 0:14He's a Sylvania, OH native. He was a South View Cougar,
- 0:19Timberstone Junior High Gray wolf.
- 0:22It's awesome to run through this with a local guy.
- 0:25Another 419 dude. This will be a super fun
- 0:28conversation talking about Logan's journey through elbow
- 0:33pain. TJ, his freshman year of
- 0:35college, another elbow issue this past season at University
- 0:41of Toledo. But it sounds like he is healthy
- 0:43and ready to go this fall. He's been crushing it.
- 0:46So really looking forward to digging into this and I'm going
- 0:50to let Logan pick up the pieces on anything I might have
- 0:54butchered in this intro. So Logan, I'm going to kick it
- 0:56over to you now. Thanks so much for coming on.
- 0:59Fill in anything on this please. Yeah, no, you hit it spot on.
- 1:02Thanks for having me and excited to have this conversation with
- 1:05you. For sure.
- 1:06I'm really looking forward to this and it's been fun, I guess
- 1:10for this little bit, getting to know you.
- 1:12I know Daryl has spent a lot more time talking to you than I
- 1:16have. What was your initial exposure
- 1:18to Flexpro Grip? Wasn't it through Coach Hardman
- 1:21at Ottawa Hills and his connection to your dad?
- 1:24Yeah, so funny enough, my dad, after I got my second surgery,
- 1:28my dad gave me a call, gave me a text.
- 1:30He's like, hey, you don't really have anything to lose.
- 1:32This is your second go around. Obviously your elbow's been a
- 1:35major issue for you. They said there's the flexpro
- 1:38grip. He said maybe you should give it
- 1:40a try. Drop me Daryl's number along
- 1:43with Coach Hardman and met up with them at Ottawa Hills
- 1:46Baseball Field. So they all gave me the whole
- 1:49rundown. Coach Hardman lended me his
- 1:51device for a little bit and that's kind of how it started.
- 1:54Perfect. Yeah, I guess that pays to be
- 1:56back in the hometown. That's another perk besides just
- 2:00mom's cooking and laundry at home, I guess.
- 2:03I guess you get the little plugs, the little perks.
- 2:05You you get somebody else's Flex Pro Grip device and you get to
- 2:09talk to the Co founder. Exactly.
- 2:12Yeah, he gave me the whole rundown.
- 2:14He's using terms that I did not know, but the day the the device
- 2:19has been unbelievable for me. Well, I, I love hearing that.
- 2:22I'm glad you think it's been helpful.
- 2:24It's crazy to think he was using terms that you haven't heard of
- 2:27before with everything you've gone through with your elbow.
- 2:30Yeah, yeah, no, he's using like I'm not.
- 2:32The scientific terms for me don't always match in my head.
- 2:35They don't, they don't connect. And I was like, OK, I'll just
- 2:38pull this, I'll do this. And you know, in the long run,
- 2:41I'm sure it'll pay off. And that's exactly what's been
- 2:43happening so. For sure.
- 2:45Well, let's backpedal a little bit and talk about your
- 2:48timeline. So maybe coming out of high
- 2:50school ball or even your journey through high school, what did
- 2:52recruiting look like for you and were you healthy through high
- 2:56school? Yeah.
- 2:57So oh God, I was healthy until I would say junior summer.
- 3:01I've always had summer. Yeah, the big summer.
- 3:04I I've always had a very strong arm.
- 3:07I grew up in a baseball family. Baseball was kind of, I grew up
- 3:10at a baseball field. So baseball was passed down for
- 3:12me like quickly. So I grew up with J bands.
- 3:15Like I started doing J bands when I was like 10.
- 3:17Dad was like just hammer these. Like we'll hammer these, you
- 3:20know, we'll we'll do long distance running.
- 3:23Like that's how we're going to kind of build you up.
- 3:25So by the time I mean like my sophomore year around like
- 3:28sophomore summer, I was like 8587 came out in the springtime,
- 3:34it's like I'd get up to like 8890.
- 3:37So that sophomore sophomore summer I went to the PBR Future
- 3:43Games and hit 90 there for the first time.
- 3:45Like SAT upper 80s, big deal. Hurt a lot from the college
- 3:50world, I guess you could say. Had a lot of phone calls with
- 3:53different schools, which is quite awesome.
- 3:55Ended up on Purdue. Just fell in love with the
- 3:56campus, fell in love with the coaching staff.
- 3:58So that spring was when I saw my probably a bigger jump.
- 4:04I came out in games, I was like 1991 running up to like 93 here
- 4:08and there. So I started to gain like
- 4:09national attention, I guess you could say.
- 4:11Got invited out to East Coast that summer, then went out to
- 4:14East Coast. And that's kind of probably
- 4:15where it all began for me. First inning I was like 1992.
- 4:19Second inning, I was like 80 to 83.
- 4:23Oh, shoot. Yeah, so like a major, major
- 4:26drop off and was like, okay, whatever, like I'm going to take
- 4:30some time off, I'll get prepared for Jupiter and we'll just go
- 4:33from there. So I went to Jupiter that fall
- 4:35and sure enough, it was actually the same inning.
- 4:38First 3 hitters were like 1990, two, 1993 and the drop off
- 4:42happened again. And so I had some people at the
- 4:45game and they're like hey, like you should probably go see a
- 4:48doctor. Like that's not normal.
- 4:49I grew up and I'm like, that's just normal.
- 4:51Like I always kind of felt like throwing with elbow soreness was
- 4:55a normal thing and it was just like, well I'm just going to
- 4:57pitch through this. I'm going to go win a ball game.
- 4:59Like that's just what's going to happen.
- 5:01So anyway, I went to see the doctor and sharing off, they're
- 5:03like, yeah, like something's probably not right.
- 5:04Gave me the first rundown and just take like two to three
- 5:07months off and we'll just go from there.
- 5:08So like that's exactly what I did.
- 5:10I even went to Purdue at the time to get a second opinion on
- 5:12it. Same thing was like, let's take
- 5:14some time off, see what happens. So that was the year with COVID.
- 5:17So I kind of heard for like a couple of teams here and there
- 5:21and then ramped up again and ramped up was like really good
- 5:26bullpens that spring were like 9294 up to 96.
- 5:29So my elbow was like, I would say very healthy at this
- 5:32standpoint, but it wasn't in large quantities.
- 5:35So I would just throw a bullpen face live guys on like a Friday,
- 5:39Saturday and just kind of repeat that throughout COVID.
- 5:41And then I reported to Purdue that August.
- 5:45Yeah. So that August, that entire
- 5:46fall, I'd probably say I was like 8992, kind of maintain that
- 5:50throughout the fall, which is big time because I mean, as a
- 5:53college freshman, usually there's a drop off because
- 5:55throwing 5-6 days a week, you've got lifting, you've got class.
- 5:59Like you have a lot going on that you didn't in high school.
- 6:03Social life too. Exactly.
- 6:04Yeah. So you take from high school,
- 6:07you're not doing as much and you get to college and it's like
- 6:10holy smokes, got a lot going on. So like maintaining Velo like
- 6:168992 like that was big time in my opinion.
- 6:19Looking back, it was like wow, like I was actually able to do
- 6:21that. Elbow was probably very healthy.
- 6:24So but same thing like very low quantities, like your typical
- 6:27like 1 inning, 2 inning outing here and there like every week.
- 6:31So then that stayed throughout fall, had a really good fall and
- 6:35came back in January and that's kind of when everything started.
- 6:41Had a couple good first outings and then just everything kind of
- 6:45went all over the place. Velo dropped to like 8384 thrown
- 6:51every which way but the strike zone.
- 6:54So he tried to tell me hey, go throw it down the middle.
- 6:57I could not throw it down the middle.
- 6:59Whether if I my hardest, whether if I try to throw a batting
- 7:02practice fastball, I just could not.
- 7:04So that happened in one outing on like a Saturday.
- 7:07Called my dad at the time. And I'm like, hey, like, what's
- 7:10going on here? And he's like, probably just a
- 7:12bad outing. Like you're good.
- 7:14Like bounce back next week happens.
- 7:16Like, yeah, you know, you're right.
- 7:18So anyways, bounce back that next Saturday, the same exact
- 7:22thing happened, if not worse. It was same thing, just
- 7:26fastballs behind guys, fastballs in the other batter's box,
- 7:29slider down the middle, but fastballs all over the place.
- 7:33And so that night called my dad and like, same thing happened.
- 7:36Something's not right. Well, so sure enough, he pulls
- 7:38up a web MD on his phone and we'd start running through like
- 7:42the symptom checklist of Tommy John.
- 7:44And sure enough, I had like everything you could possibly
- 7:48think of. So my surgery or my Tommy John,
- 7:51I guess you could say it's probably more like chronic like
- 7:53happened over a period versus just a singular like blow up.
- 7:56Like some guys have. Like we've had a couple guys,
- 7:58they're one of my good buddies that Purdue, like one pitch blow
- 8:01up. But for me, it was just chronic
- 8:04overtime. Like in high school, I would
- 8:06generally speaking, I would throw 7 innings every week,
- 8:09whether if that was 80 pitches or 120, like that was going to
- 8:13happen. And looking back, that was
- 8:16probably not the best thing for me to do at the time.
- 8:19But so chronic overtime, which the trainer that that Sunday
- 8:23morning was like, hey, like, this isn't right.
- 8:26Something's wrong with my elbow. Let's get it checked out.
- 8:29So he ran me through all the tests and whatever, and he's
- 8:30like, yeah, from my understanding, he's a really
- 8:34great trainer. His name is Casey Kaur.
- 8:36He's like, something's wrong, but we probably got to take you
- 8:39to the doctor. Most likely it's Tommy John, but
- 8:42we're not positive. So same thing.
- 8:44Went and saw the Purdue doc at the time and he's just like,
- 8:46yeah, your best bets probably Tommy and John and to open you
- 8:50up and see exactly what's wrong. Or I mean, we could give you
- 8:53time off or whatever, but if I were to take time off, I'd end
- 8:55up missing the following year as well.
- 8:58And that just wasn't necessarily makes sense for my timeline.
- 9:01So we decided to operate and started the whole Tommy and John
- 9:06rehab process. So that was the first go around.
- 9:09So yeah, which that experience was, I was second to none.
- 9:12It was awesome. I actually really, I'm more than
- 9:14proud of the few guys that actually really enjoyed it.
- 9:17I loved being in the weight room 4 or five days a week just
- 9:20hammering legs. I had a say.
- 9:23And then another buddy at the time was going through the same
- 9:25thing I was. So you just bunked up all summer
- 9:27and kind of just went after in the weight room and with rehab.
- 9:30And so from that we went to for my throwing, my throwing the
- 9:36first time around was very hard. I had no idea what a tight
- 9:39elbow, a healthy elbow felt like.
- 9:42So for the first like month and a half, I honestly was probably
- 9:45a wash because I really struggled to figure out how my
- 9:48body works again and, you know, allowing it to allowing my arm
- 9:51to kind of get back to where it needed to be.
- 9:53So that kind of took a, a process for me.
- 9:56I probably took like a month and a half to two months.
- 9:58But once I figured it out, it was like it was just a flip of
- 10:02the switch. It was, it was easy after that.
- 10:04That whole process was awesome. There's definitely some trials
- 10:08and tribulations throughout it, but looking back, I want to
- 10:11change a thing about it. So that led me up until my what
- 10:15would that have been my sophomore year?
- 10:17Yeah, I guess where, where are we now?
- 10:18Fall of your sophomore year when you're really starting to throw
- 10:21again, I'm assuming. So I had surgery in March,
- 10:25March, and then I started throwing, I want to say August,
- 10:30maybe August, September. I want to say it was like at the
- 10:34five and a half, six month range.
- 10:36Yeah. Pretty standard, yeah.
- 10:38Like it was probably the most like standard TJ rehab that you
- 10:41could possibly have throwers 10. I mean I.
- 10:45Cows come home. Yeah, exactly.
- 10:47Like I, I'd walk in for rehab every morning in case he's got
- 10:51like a stack of papers. He's like, these are your
- 10:53exercises today. You're gonna do this all summer,
- 10:55so get good at it. So I just hammer that every
- 10:58morning, go to the weight room and that's just kind of how it
- 11:00went that summer. And then we started throwing
- 11:03again in like September. I look, I ran into problems when
- 11:07I got to like 6090 feet when I actually had to put effort on
- 11:11the baseball and I couldn't just, you know, flick it.
- 11:13That took a prop that was kind of my biggest trials.
- 11:17Like, I mean, I'd spike heaters, like it was just spike, spike,
- 11:20spike. And so it took me a little bit
- 11:22to kind of figure out like how to get air underneath it and
- 11:25like just how to backspin the baseball.
- 11:28Interesting. Yeah.
- 11:30So I met with the outside PT at the time.
- 11:33So like an outsider, he's from, actually he's from Toledo and
- 11:36Wall and Zach's name and he's just like, well, you got to
- 11:39think about it from a perspective.
- 11:40Your TJ was chronic. So you're probably not used to
- 11:44throwing with an elbow that's tight necessarily.
- 11:47Like it's all stitched up, it's all good versus your elbow is
- 11:50probably stretched out over time.
- 11:52So you kind of got to think about that.
- 11:54And so I really struggled to throw it through the person I
- 11:58was playing catch with versus caring about where it was going,
- 12:01if that makes sense. So I was more concerned about
- 12:03like trying to hit him in the chest versus actually just
- 12:06throwing it. So that took me a while to kind
- 12:10of figure that out again. And once I was able to figure it
- 12:13out it just the the switch flipped again and it was just
- 12:17easy after that. Did you have any point in your
- 12:21return to throw where you did like plyo type drills or like
- 12:26constraint base throwing? Or was your first time really
- 12:31throwing entering the throwing program throwing a baseball to a
- 12:34partner? So my, I guess so my first rehab
- 12:38compared to my second rehab were immensely different, OK.
- 12:42And I think that's in large part due to the trainers that I had
- 12:46at the time. Yeah.
- 12:47Purdue or trainer, He's great guy, awesome trainer.
- 12:51I mean can speak the world about him.
- 12:53He was more like old school focused.
- 12:54I think, like your throwers 10 your ITP like those are like
- 12:58your staples. Like and we I didn't do J bands.
- 13:01It was more crossover bands. So those are like his staples
- 13:04and that so I didn't end up like doing plyos like your Med balls,
- 13:08your your driveline balls until like February maybe.
- 13:13So my. Like actually in season prep?
- 13:16Exactly so like that whole return to throw process for me
- 13:20was just straight baseballs and looking back from my two rehabs.
- 13:25If there's anything I would recommend, it's like you almost
- 13:28got a hammer Your your plyos more than you actually think
- 13:32because that just allows your brain to like kind of connect
- 13:34the dots. Like hey, like I'm healthy, like
- 13:37hey, I'm good. I can actually throw a baseball
- 13:40at higher intent versus just flicking it.
- 13:42Especially when you're doing, you're trying to think like your
- 13:45Med ball pushes and everything like that.
- 13:47I mean, you're throwing a 1214 LB Med ball and a baseball is
- 13:50only 5 oz. So your body kind of can
- 13:53understand like, hey, like I can actually throw a baseball now.
- 13:57Yeah, I think that's it. That's a great point.
- 13:59And the reason I wanted to interject on that, I've had that
- 14:04conversation with a few people on here or separately that I
- 14:10think we take for granted how difficult throwing is,
- 14:14especially like you've done it for your full life now you have
- 14:19a completely new elbow and you're expected to be able to go
- 14:22out. Whether it's your own perception
- 14:25of what you should be able to do or somebody else's.
- 14:28You just get so caught up in, am I hitting the target?
- 14:32Am I making the glove pop? All these things that I guess
- 14:36technically don't really matter because all we're concerned
- 14:39about is getting you to be able to throw again.
- 14:42So why should it matter in your first few weeks if you're
- 14:45hitting a target or not? That's why I do think it's
- 14:47valuable to kind of take a step back.
- 14:50It might not be as fun, but throwing to a net or throwing
- 14:53into a wall using plyos like all those things can be useful tools
- 14:58that just make the actual activity easier, so then you can
- 15:04focus on moving the right way. I mean, that was another big
- 15:08thing that that was a big difference too.
- 15:11And the two rehabs too is like my second one as well, along
- 15:14with the plyos. Our trainer was like for the
- 15:17first week, she's like, hey, like instead of throwing to me,
- 15:19we're just going to go throwing to a net.
- 15:20I don't care where it goes. You can sail it, you can spike
- 15:22it, I don't care. But you haven't thrown a
- 15:24baseball in six, 7-8 months. So you know, your body, you may
- 15:29have done it a lot every day for your whole life, but you're
- 15:33still taking that six, 7-8 months off.
- 15:36So your body's got to figure it out again.
- 15:38I feel like throwing into a net for me was probably one of the
- 15:42more beneficial things I've ever done because I threw into a net
- 15:45for like a week and a half, two weeks.
- 15:47And after that two weeks, our trainer's like, all right, let's
- 15:49throw in the net. I'm like, no, let's let's go
- 15:51play catch. And sure enough, it was back to
- 15:54exactly where it was before surgery when I started throwing
- 15:56to him again after throwing into the net.
- 15:58And throwing into a net's not what I did in the first one.
- 16:02And it took me like mentally like physically a lot to get
- 16:07back to throwing it. So if I were to go back and do
- 16:09two things differently in my first rehab, it would definitely
- 16:12be plyos. Like I would enforce that like
- 16:14immediately, like get that going as quickly as you possibly can.
- 16:18Just thrown into a net at the beginning because it's it's
- 16:21easy. It's supposed to be easy for
- 16:23that first couple of weeks because you're just getting your
- 16:25body going. Yeah, you can just move so much
- 16:28more freely. The activity is easier.
- 16:32I really wish that was written into programs more, because not
- 16:36everybody is going to have the professional advice that you had
- 16:41in your processes. There's so many kids that are
- 16:44stuck rehabbing on their own, if they're in high school or small
- 16:48colleges, something like that, that they do kind of need to
- 16:52figure it out and it might not be obvious that throwing to a
- 16:58wall or throwing to a net is a good natural progression.
- 17:03Yeah, well, I think too, like you just said, I mean like the
- 17:05high school kids, like the the lower D twos or you don't have a
- 17:09trainer with you every single day like Purdue and Toledo, like
- 17:14I had a trainer with me every day.
- 17:17So it's definitely hard to kind of figure it out on your own
- 17:20because I know I was when I was going through my throwing or
- 17:22whatever, it was like Google, Tiktok, YouTube, I'm like, I got
- 17:26to see somebody that's going through TJ and I personally
- 17:31could not find what I was going through.
- 17:34I think that was kind of the hard part for me because it was
- 17:36just like, well, I haven't found that.
- 17:38So I got to figure it out for me and it, it took me time, but I
- 17:42mean, at the end of the day, I still was able to figure it out.
- 17:44It just took me a little bit longer than probably most
- 17:46people. But definitely like using your
- 17:49resources is massive. And even though I didn't find
- 17:53exactly what I was looking for, the amount of TJ stuff I found
- 17:56on the Internet was unbelievable, and that was a big
- 17:58help along the way. Like Adam Adovino, I don't know
- 18:01if I said his last name. Yeah, yeah, Adam.
- 18:03Ado yeah, yeah, he has ATJ YouTube video like first or
- 18:08second day back when he first gets out of the brace, he's in
- 18:11the hot tub like ripping it to get range of motion back like
- 18:14that a big thing and helped me get back to where I wanted to
- 18:18go. Yeah, I think the community is
- 18:22an underappreciated thing. Like thankfully you had your
- 18:25teammate that you were rehabbing with at Purdue, but like you
- 18:29said, you were always looking for more.
- 18:31It's not like you could go to, I don't know, the, the local gym
- 18:36and just see a ton of other people that are going through
- 18:39the same thing or in the athletic training room,
- 18:42Especially in the college realm, TJ is almost a baseball specific
- 18:48thing. Like yes, it happens in softball
- 18:50and gymnastics and it can happen in tennis and track and field,
- 18:53but you're not going to see that regularly.
- 18:56You're really just not. So if, if you're a college
- 19:00athlete, like there's a good chance if you're rehabbing TJ,
- 19:03you're the only guy that's rehabbing TJ.
- 19:06So even though you're with other people rehabbing, it can still
- 19:10feel very isolating. So I, I'm sure like you said,
- 19:15TikTok, thankfully you had that where you could at least go see
- 19:19content that other people have made or YouTube, you can see
- 19:22content that other people have made to at least I guess
- 19:26reassure you that no, this is OK what I'm going through.
- 19:30Yeah, no, it was massive. And I mean, there was guys on
- 19:33the team before me that had TJ and they were a big help.
- 19:35Me and my buddy Avery, you know, we were kind of big time for
- 19:38each other. And then another really good
- 19:40friend of mine actually ended up having TJ that following year.
- 19:44So it was just like it was kind of a blessing in disguise
- 19:48because, I mean, we were all there for each other at the end
- 19:49of the day. Yeah.
- 19:51And then so like he had TJ. Another really good buddy had TJ
- 19:55that summer. It was just a lot going on.
- 19:58But thankfully, I mean, like we all had each other.
- 20:00We were all able to be like, hey, like you should do this,
- 20:03stay away from this. I wouldn't do this.
- 20:06And so there's a lot of like information and knowledge
- 20:08probably going around the four of us at the time.
- 20:11Yeah. I, I want to go back in the
- 20:13timeline now to that summer where you said you were just
- 20:16ripping the weight room 4 or five days a week.
- 20:18So were you pretty much back to full strength full weight room
- 20:25activity before you even picked up a ball to throw?
- 20:28Yeah, and I was probably honestly 10 times stronger than
- 20:31what I was before. Perfect.
- 20:34We had a really, like, we had a young strength coach at the
- 20:37time, so he was very like up to date with all the new stuff
- 20:40going on. So I would hammer until I get my
- 20:42arm out of the brace. I'd hammer left arm and legs.
- 20:45Like that was like a staple. Like I'd squat, reverse lunge
- 20:49step UPS, split squat. That was kind of like the big
- 20:52compound movement for the day. And then accessory wise, like
- 20:56upper body was pretty much left arm.
- 20:58And then the minute I got my brace off, it was like, all
- 21:00right, like let's let's get to work.
- 21:02And just started ripping right arm as well.
- 21:03Obviously starting at like 1015 lbs and slowly working your way
- 21:06up. But lower half wise was probably
- 21:08the strongest I've ever been and probably ever will be honestly
- 21:13because I mean we lifted legs like four days a week and so I
- 21:18just had tree trunks for legs. Awesome.
- 21:21Yeah, I, I think that's important to call out.
- 21:25It's very valuable in my eyes to achieve maximal.
- 21:31I'm, I'm saying maximal. I don't mean like maxing out all
- 21:34the time, but push yourself on the strength side before you
- 21:37pick up the ball again because the goal is to prepare your body
- 21:42to handle all the stresses of throwing.
- 21:45And yeah. No, it's not like squatting or
- 21:48dead lifting is the exact same thing as throwing a baseball,
- 21:51but you need to get your body prepared to handle not just the
- 21:56force of a single throw, but the duration of a long season and
- 22:01everything you could experience. When I think that's another
- 22:04thing that's kind of mistaken about TJ is everybody kind of
- 22:06seems, oh, if you get TJ, you're going to come back and throw
- 22:08harder. That's not true.
- 22:10It's just because all the work, like if you put in work, you
- 22:13know, in the weight room in the rehab, like that's allowing your
- 22:17body to get to where it needs to be to throw hard.
- 22:20Like when I was in high school throwing 94, my body had no
- 22:24business. I mean, I'd go into lunch, eat a
- 22:28bag of chips, eat an ice cream bar and be like, all right, like
- 22:31I'm just going to go pitch tonight, go out and throw out
- 22:33like low 90s. But like long term wise, that's
- 22:37just not good because it's a lot on your body.
- 22:41It's a lot on your arm to throw at high intent for 506070
- 22:46pitches that especially when you know the younger like high
- 22:50school. I didn't know that.
- 22:52I didn't realize that. But looking back on it, like
- 22:56when you get TJ and you go in the weight room, like you just
- 22:58got to hammer the strength side because your body needs to get
- 23:01built up to the point of where if you throw hard, like you're
- 23:04going to wake up the next day, you might be a little sore.
- 23:05But like compared to what it was, it's nowhere near it
- 23:09because your body is able to withstand it.
- 23:11For sure. I'm really glad you brought that
- 23:13up because we can dispel this myth in so many ways.
- 23:16One, it's just straight up not true.
- 23:18If you, if you look at the data, people don't come back throwing
- 23:21harder, But the people that do, generally it's because they
- 23:24worked hard for the first time and now they're actually
- 23:28prepared to throw a baseball. And lo and behold, because you
- 23:34worked out really, really hard for 11 straight months, you can
- 23:39throw harder. That adds up.
- 23:41Like that makes a ton of sense. Or the other population, it's
- 23:45kind of like a, yeah, no shit, you throw harder.
- 23:47You got hurt when you were 17 and now you're 21.
- 23:51You've continued to play baseball for four more years.
- 23:54You're going to throw harder. You're a man now.
- 23:56You're no longer a 17 year old child.
- 23:59Exactly. That's exactly, yeah.
- 24:01And I think that's just the myth that just seems to be like, you
- 24:04know, oh, you got TJ. Oh, you're going to come back
- 24:06and throw out her like, no, there's a lot of no, there's
- 24:09other factors that are more important than that one that
- 24:12you're just explaining. The episode, it's it'll be out
- 24:16before this one comes out, but just in an interview with a AAA
- 24:20pitcher named Ian Seymour, he, he had TJ in 2023, So his third
- 24:28year of pro ball, I think it was he did not throw harder in 2024
- 24:34than he did prior to surgery. He had incredible success.
- 24:37Don't get me wrong. Like you can have incredible
- 24:40success coming back. Just because you're not throwing
- 24:42as hard doesn't mean you can't continue to be successful
- 24:45because he had a career year. He threw career highs and
- 24:49innings strikeouts, all the above.
- 24:52But he just hasn't found that velocity yet.
- 24:56And it's not to say he can't regain it.
- 24:59I fully believe that another offseason, fully healthy, he can
- 25:03dedicate himself to training. He'll probably gain another tick
- 25:07or two, there's no doubt about that.
- 25:09But it it takes longer than a year, 2 years to gain everything
- 25:15back, especially the more mature you are. 100% yeah totally
- 25:20agree. It's that's how it goes.
- 25:23So let's Fast forward now to we we got to February when you
- 25:27started picking up plyo balls again.
- 25:29Or season prep. So what did your actual
- 25:33sophomore year of baseball look like?
- 25:36Yeah, so my actual sophomore year started off extremely well.
- 25:42My first four or five outings were legit and in essence Velo.
- 25:47Everything was right where it needed to be.
- 25:49I actually came back throwing harder than I did before and
- 25:53ended up making a couple midweek starts, but that's kind of where
- 25:57the ball began to tumble again. I would.
- 26:00So prime example is I start on like a Tuesday or Wednesday,
- 26:03throw really well, and then all of a sudden I'm in the bullpen
- 26:06on Sunday getting warmed up again and going back out.
- 26:09And that happened for a couple of weeks and it wasn't terrible,
- 26:15but long term, at the end of the season, it was like, I think my
- 26:20arm's going to fall off. It's just my arm did not feel
- 26:23good whatsoever. And looking back on it, it was
- 26:26just the workload for a guy coming back from TJ.
- 26:31Like I threw in a game at like 11 1/2 months.
- 26:33The first time I threw sliders were two live hitters.
- 26:37Oh. OK, yeah.
- 26:39So it was like, oh, Logan's good, here comes fuel to the
- 26:43fire and here he goes. So the downside of that was I
- 26:48threw well, and when you throw well, it's like, oh, he's good,
- 26:53he's back. Yeah, you're going to throw
- 26:55more. Exactly.
- 26:56Yeah. So he ended up throwing like on
- 26:57a weekend basis out of the pen. Like, I mean, it'd be like, I
- 27:00don't know, it's meaningless innings.
- 27:03I guess you could say that it was a lot to nothing and kind of
- 27:06worked my way into a a midweek roll, a midweek starter, I guess
- 27:09you could say, and threw well and those couple of starts that
- 27:13I had. But that's kind of where the
- 27:15ball kind of fell off the table as I'd relieve on a Saturday or
- 27:17Sunday to just OK, that kind of happened for a little bit.
- 27:21And by the end of the season, it was just my arm was nowhere.
- 27:24It was back to where it was. And in essence, it was just not
- 27:27feeling great all the time. Just a lot of volume on my arm.
- 27:31And then I ended up going to play summer ball for like a
- 27:34month and a half. Where'd you go?
- 27:37Lafayette Aviators, the the Prospect.
- 27:41Yeah. So I was writing home.
- 27:42It was perfect because I had to access to all the produce
- 27:44facilities. It was great.
- 27:46So yeah, that happened through decent through OK.
- 27:50And then took like a month off and came back for fall and falls
- 27:56kind of where I guess you could say another veal jump happened.
- 27:59For me, I'd be like up to 95 in scrimmages through decent
- 28:04through OK. So the time off helped.
- 28:06Yeah, it helped immensely. Stuff was good from a
- 28:10standpoint. I came back that next year and
- 28:12didn't throw as much. I think I threw like 5 or 6
- 28:15innings at the time and I threw well in those innings.
- 28:18Came back, had actually meetings.
- 28:20It's probably like this isn't I'm going to chance for Toledo.
- 28:22I want to be closer to family. I've only got a couple years
- 28:24left. That's the biggest thing that's
- 28:26going on. So decided to make that move.
- 28:28And I would think that's ultimately where everything kind
- 28:31of started to come full, full turn.
- 28:35So that summer I only played like a couple of weeks in the
- 28:38Northwoods, like two or three weeks, maybe 4.
- 28:41Decided to take some time off again because I was like, maybe
- 28:43that's what my arm needs. And that fall was probably one
- 28:47of the better out whole times I've ever had.
- 28:52I had like one bad outing out of eight or 9 was consistently like
- 28:5890 to 95 in that in that range off speed was right where it
- 29:04needed to be and just was in a really good spot.
- 29:09The one downside is I, I do throw hard, but I have what you
- 29:13could say a dead zone heater. So I'm at like like at that
- 29:17point in time, like my IBB would be like an average of like 16
- 29:21with horizontal being right up there with it.
- 29:24So it's kind of just, you know, middle of the plane like, and
- 29:29that's kind of where I've noticed ever since starting to
- 29:31use Flex Pro that my elbow was never, something was up with my
- 29:36elbow at that point too. Because if my elbow was healthy,
- 29:39I'd get sync. Like I would just, I'd run it
- 29:42like crazy at like 9394. And the minute my elbow would
- 29:47kind of start, like a lot of volume would happen to it.
- 29:50My elbow would just deteriorate and my fastball would be, it'd
- 29:53still be like 9394, but it'd be flat.
- 29:55Like that's just kind of a big thing I've noticed.
- 29:59So losing movement. Yeah, losing movement.
- 30:01My spin rate on sliders would go down and along with the movement
- 30:07of it. And so kind of from that, our
- 30:10pitching coach was like, well, let's try to think about a
- 30:11sinker. So kind of played around with
- 30:14the sinker. So Fast forward to that spring.
- 30:18I ended up starting like the first 3 or 4 weekends did just
- 30:21OK, not great. The sinker was moving more than
- 30:24I've ever had a pitch move for me before, and it was very.
- 30:27Hard to struggle with the locate.
- 30:28Exactly. Yeah.
- 30:29And so sure enough after like 4 weeks is when the second one
- 30:36came around. It was an outing like the same
- 30:40thing that happened with DJ actually.
- 30:42First hitter got through the 1st hitter and then it was just like
- 30:45spray chart, spray chart again and ended up losing feeling in
- 30:50my pinky. Trainer came out on like Dev,
- 30:54Devin's his name and I'm like Dev, I can't like feel like
- 30:56pinky right now. He's like, OK, we'll let's take
- 31:00you out. We'll go to the trainer,
- 31:00whatever. And so I know just going through
- 31:03a bunch of tests, turns out I didn't have TJ.
- 31:05So they did an MRI, ultrasound X-ray MRI with dies.
- 31:10Well, and I had fluid in my elbow along with inflammation
- 31:16and the inflammation was heavily around my ulnar nerve and threw
- 31:21more tests and doctor's appointments or whatever they
- 31:24are the pinpoint that like the outside of my nerve was damaged.
- 31:28It was just because of all the scar tissue at the time, the
- 31:30inflammation was beating down on it.
- 31:33And so this caused my nerves to be slow and so I, it wouldn't
- 31:38get electric down to my hand quick enough, causing my pinky
- 31:40to feel numb. And so we decided to get surgery
- 31:44on it in part due to because if it gets worse, it's a nerve.
- 31:48Nerves are not fun to play with. They take it all the time.
- 31:52They're very finicky. So it was just best to be like,
- 31:54hey, like, let's get this taken care of.
- 31:56And ended up getting surgery that first week of June and then
- 32:00the second rehab started. OK, so do you technically have a
- 32:076th year if you want it or did you throw too much?
- 32:10Technically speaking I do OK. I got my first go around was
- 32:16just a normal red shirt so they usually you're going to get
- 32:18hurt. Usually they'll red shirt you
- 32:20before they medically red shirt you.
- 32:22So pretty. I got red shirted due to injury
- 32:26and then this past year I believe I got a medically red
- 32:30shirt. I'm not positive but I'm pretty
- 32:33sure I did get a medical red shirt because I want to say I
- 32:36got hurt like first second week of March.
- 32:40Yeah, so it should be early enough.
- 32:41Plus you're a pitcher, so you're only playing in games that you
- 32:45pitch in. It's not.
- 32:45Like you're back in July. Anything like that?
- 32:48I threw and started the first 3 weekends, made a midweek start
- 32:53and then threw two more times, but the two more times were in
- 32:57the same week. I threw an inning on like a
- 32:58Tuesday, threw an inning on a Friday, and on Friday is just
- 33:03when it decided to go off the rails for me.
- 33:07All right, so I guess leverage leverage with the six year we
- 33:11love that have the medical That's right.
- 33:14Yeah, we we need that but let's talk about this second rehab now
- 33:18you you said it was different of course it wasn't the exact same
- 33:22injury. So I'm sure there's maybe some
- 33:24slight changes with that, but then again, you're still dealing
- 33:27with the forearm, you're still dealing with the elbow.
- 33:29And it sounds like a major change this time was a focus on
- 33:35forearm strength besides just the traditional shoulder care
- 33:41of. The throwers 10, yes, I mean we
- 33:43still did the throwers 10. I mean, like that's a, that's
- 33:45almost, we got to yeah, it's a guarantee at this point.
- 33:49I got. So obviously it's not as
- 33:52intense, the surgery, you're not going as deep, you know, it's
- 33:55just around your nerve. It's not as extensive as Tommy
- 33:58John. So I was able to get range of
- 33:59motion back very quickly. I think I got it back within the
- 34:02first like 3 or 4 days and that was pretty quick.
- 34:05So we ended up being able to start plyos within the first
- 34:09like 3-4 weeks. So started them super quick.
- 34:12Once everything was healed up, the whole scar was taken care
- 34:14of. There was no more like openings
- 34:16or whatever. And we started, yeah.
- 34:19So we started like 3 or 4 weeks and I think that was game
- 34:21changing. The PT and AT at Toledo are, are
- 34:24younger Devon and Angel. Yeah, so they're on the younger
- 34:26side. They do a lot of the new stuff
- 34:29that's going on right now. So it was just big like, hey,
- 34:32we're gonna go apply OS right away.
- 34:34So we started to apply OS. That was just the big focus of
- 34:38my rehab. I guess you could say like we
- 34:40still did your throwers 10 like that kind of warm you up.
- 34:42But immediately after that it's hey, we're going to go do 3 by
- 34:466, scoot, toss 3 by 6 over to your head.
- 34:49Just trying to get your arm back to where it it was and getting
- 34:52you ready to throw a baseball again.
- 34:55So you ran through rehab, I guess during the summer you were
- 35:00you were able to stay local in Toledo and.
- 35:03Yeah, you don't have anything there.
- 35:05Another summer getting after it weight room wise.
- 35:08I would just go to the local gym over in Sylvania.
- 35:11And I already kind of had I already like I've already been
- 35:13through it. I've been through college for a
- 35:15long time. So I kind of had an idea of what
- 35:18to do. So my big focus for this go
- 35:20around is just like I'm just gonna get strong.
- 35:21Like that's that's gonna be my thing.
- 35:24I'm gonna be as strong as I possibly can.
- 35:26So it was just three by 8/3, by like 8 to 10.
- 35:29I started with like a pitch shark, pitch shark and leg
- 35:31press. Yep.
- 35:32So I'd hammered those until I got my arm back.
- 35:34I mean, I got my arm back. It was squats, front squats,
- 35:37reverse lunge, split squats. And I, since I was able to use
- 35:41my arm pretty quickly, it was back to, you know, dumbbell
- 35:44bench, bench rows. I'm a big pull up guy now.
- 35:48I love pull ups. And that's just kind of what I
- 35:50started to do 3-4 days a week along with PT, which was roughly
- 35:55three or four days a week as well.
- 35:57How far into the process then were you introduced to Flexpro
- 36:01Grip because that that would have been what late mid, late
- 36:06August when you picked up Flexpro Grip or?
- 36:08Yeah. So I'm all saying that was
- 36:10Daryl. Second week of throwing.
- 36:15I threw a little bit earlier because it it wasn't as intense.
- 36:19We're throwing the second week of August, OK.
- 36:22I met with Darrell that week and we started on, I believe the 30%
- 36:27cycle I want. Yep, for rehab that would make
- 36:30sense. Yep.
- 36:31So every every day after I'd throw, I would just go in the
- 36:34locker room and just do that cycle three days a week at the
- 36:37time. And then I worked up to, I want
- 36:40to say I'm at 6070% right now. It's I'm doing Flexpro five days
- 36:45a week. Yeah, it's a lot different.
- 36:47But I just kind of bounce back and forth between 60 percent,
- 36:5170%, depending on how my body feels.
- 36:53Oh, cool. So I think that's like another
- 36:55big thing that nobody really talks about.
- 36:57Like if your body doesn't feel good, well, pushing yourself's
- 37:00not the best option in my opinion.
- 37:04Just you're just causing yourself a bigger hole.
- 37:07You need your body to recover. And that's what I've kind of
- 37:08learned with my arm is like if I don't feel the best and if I'm,
- 37:12if I do one, like if I do an A day and I'm going down and I
- 37:16don't hit my number immediately and it's taking me a lot more
- 37:18effort to hit it. I'm like, OK, well, I need to
- 37:20stick, take a step back. I'll go down 10%, hit that
- 37:24level. And I feel like that's been
- 37:25really beneficial. I'm sure you've been able to
- 37:28carry that over to everything beyond just Flexpro grip.
- 37:31I I'm guessing you do similar things in the weight room.
- 37:34I don't know if you've been able to use velocity based training,
- 37:37BBT or anything like that because I know that's, that's
- 37:41been powerful for guys like worrying less about weight, more
- 37:44about the speed. So if their speed is down on a
- 37:47lift, they know to lower weight or something like that.
- 37:50Yeah. So for me, I've kind of learned
- 37:52like I don't like to feel heavy. OK.
- 37:56This is in there. This is just the way I am.
- 37:58I don't like to feel heavy. So if I feel heavy, I don't feel
- 38:01like I'm gonna have my best stuff on the mound.
- 38:02So I kind of take that over into the weight room.
- 38:05So in the off period, so like one's going to start in, I don't
- 38:09know, three weeks. It's like that off period's
- 38:13great because then I can just get strong.
- 38:14I can get as strong as an ox. I can really hammer the weight
- 38:16room, but the minute I get back to school, it's just a flip of
- 38:21like I'm going to go 4 by 3, three by four.
- 38:24If I'm squatting, it's 2:25 and I'm going to move it as fast as
- 38:27I possibly can. The same thing with bench.
- 38:29It's like if I'm going to bench, dumbbell bench a hundreds, well,
- 38:33I'm going to take that down to about 65 seventies and same
- 38:36thing. I'm going to move it as fast as
- 38:37I can and I really focus on that and anti rotational stuff.
- 38:41So like your Med balls, your payoff press, that's kind of
- 38:44where I found my sweet spot with because I tend to get over
- 38:47rotational. For me, it's just that
- 38:49combination of things makes me feel my best and it makes me
- 38:52feel light, it makes me feel explosive and it makes me feel
- 38:55like I'm in control of what my body's doing.
- 38:57Very cool. I like that a lot.
- 38:58I mean, that's, that takes a lot of learning.
- 39:00There's no right or wrong, it's just what works for you.
- 39:03And it sounds like through years of trials and tribulations,
- 39:07you've got to figure out what makes sense.
- 39:10I've definitely been around the block for a little bit.
- 39:13Unfortunately, it's not the draft or whatever, but in
- 39:15college has provided me a lot to kind of figure out what works
- 39:18best for me. And I've kind of figured that
- 39:20out slowly over time. And there's definitely been a
- 39:23lot of trials and tribulations and trying to figure out what
- 39:25works best. But I think that's ultimately
- 39:27when it comes to baseball, like when you go to college, like
- 39:30you're there to play baseball, you're not there to lift
- 39:32weights. And trying to figure out that
- 39:34line's very important and you got to do what makes you feel
- 39:37best. Because I'm sure there's guys
- 39:38that want to go lift the house and that's going to make them
- 39:40feel best. That's just not my Forte.
- 39:42You figured out what the main thing is and what best supports
- 39:46that main thing. I think that takes people a
- 39:49while to figure out. You stated it really well with
- 39:52the you don't go to college to lift weights, you go to college
- 39:55to play ball. I think it's really easy to get
- 39:58lost in that it it can be the same on the bump with the track
- 40:02man unit. Yeah, go to college to throw a
- 40:0516 inch sweeper. Although that might help you get
- 40:09better, ultimately you need to get.
- 40:11Outs, exactly. That's what you're there for at
- 40:15the end of the day, like your stuff, stuff.
- 40:17And that's very important. But like if your stuff's not
- 40:20getting you out, if your stuff's not doing what it needs to do,
- 40:23then it's not really benefiting you.
- 40:25Cuz if the name of the game's just you gotta get the guy out,
- 40:27whether that's a strikeout, fly ball, ground ball, like that's
- 40:30the goal and you gotta figure out what you can do in order to
- 40:33make that happen. So Speaking of results, how's
- 40:37everything been this fall? Unbelievable to say the least.
- 40:40So I threw my first bullpen. It was 9092, and the crazy part
- 40:45is, is it's no longer run. It's just straight IVB.
- 40:49So first bullpen, I averaged like 18 and that's slowly ticked
- 40:52up to like 18 to 23. Oh my gosh, 23 is insane.
- 40:57Yeah, so like I just absolutely ride the baseball now.
- 41:00Like it's unheard of. I'm genuinely surprised because
- 41:05for me, like I'm like, oh, like I've got an OK heater.
- 41:08Like I need my heater to get me ahead early and then I can throw
- 41:11my my spin stuff because I'm a big supination guy.
- 41:14Yeah. And it's just that's where
- 41:16that's where I need to go. And now that I have a heater
- 41:18with me, it makes it a lot, a lot easier.
- 41:20But the Flex pro's done unbelievable things.
- 41:22So it's taken me from 1991. I do my first 100% pen at like
- 41:269395. No pain, same thing.
- 41:29Just an absolute ride. Heater breaking ball has been
- 41:32probably the best it's ever been.
- 41:34Cutter's been the best it's ever been.
- 41:35It's pretty unbelievable. So now, yeah, it's.
- 41:39I called my dad one night. I'm like, thank you.
- 41:42Like I texted Daryl, I'm like, you guys are the best.
- 41:45Like thank you so much. I can actually throw a baseball
- 41:48and I have to feel like, Oh my gosh, I wonder what's wrong with
- 41:50my elbow. It's been unreal to say the
- 41:53least. So now it's, I want to say the
- 41:55cycles like every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, I do the
- 41:58holds after my bull pens. Yeah, yeah.
- 42:01So I want to say I'm at like 2 bull pens roughly a week, 1
- 42:04lighter, one heavier. I do that the day after and then
- 42:07it's just the cycle in between and stuff wise then unreal.
- 42:12I appreciate the flowers. That really does mean a lot.
- 42:14Yeah, I'm glad it's working for you.
- 42:17Yeah. But yeah, I want to focus on
- 42:18you. So what or how did you react the
- 42:23first time you saw that 18/19/20 IVB on the heater?
- 42:28Were you like, Nah, that thing's broken, recalibrate it.
- 42:31Yeah, so our game mount has a track man.
- 42:34So I'll just throw all my bullpens after practice on the
- 42:36track man. Our director of OPS guy was
- 42:39like, dude, like you just spun a heater like 23 IVB and I'm like,
- 42:43no, like that thing. It's a it's, it should be
- 42:47running like that's the normal thing that it does.
- 42:51And he's like, no, like, I'm serious.
- 42:52Like look at these. And sure enough, it was like
- 42:541819, 2020, 23/20/20. And I'm like, you sure those are
- 43:00mine? Like that could be somebody
- 43:02else. And he's like, no, like that's,
- 43:05that's yours. And I it was pretty surreal.
- 43:08I guess you could say no, the work throughout the four, four
- 43:13or five years has kind of started to pay off.
- 43:14It took a little bit longer than you know it does for some
- 43:17people, but at the end of the day it is paying off and I think
- 43:20I faced live hitters in like 2 weeks, week and a half.
- 43:22So I'm really excited to see how that goes, to see how the stuff
- 43:25plays against them. Will you be in the indoor or you
- 43:28getting out on the field for? That I'm hoping we can get out
- 43:31on the field so I can get the track man rolling.
- 43:33But in Ohio it's a flip of a coin if it's going to be 65 or
- 43:3640. So it'll be probably a
- 43:39day-to-day basis. For sure.
- 43:41I mean that's super exciting. Where where are you at now?
- 43:45I guess in your workload, like how many pitches are you
- 43:48throwing in a typical pen? I.
- 43:50Mean that's probably been the big thing.
- 43:51So heavier days is usually 2 sets of like 15 to 20 and like
- 43:5530 to 40 pitches. Lighter days is just kind of
- 43:57more like a touch and feel like 20 to 25 touch and feel.
- 44:01But for me a touch and feel right now it's 20 to 25 S the
- 44:04heavier days. I think that's been the biggest
- 44:06thing too, is talking from like a Velo and metrical standpoint
- 44:10like this stuff. It's not like it's around the
- 44:11board. It's been very like precise and
- 44:14accurate and has stayed throughout the course of a
- 44:17bullpen, which has been a big thing for me because I mean both
- 44:20rehabs or whatever, one pitch is 93 and the next is 83.
- 44:25It's just that's a big different.
- 44:27But from a Velo standpoint, everything's just held roughly
- 44:31like 9394 in the higher intent pens, which is usually my
- 44:35heavier days. But same thing with like the
- 44:37metrics on it. So the IBB kind of stays the
- 44:39same, which has been big time for me, which is honestly
- 44:43something I care about more than the Velo due to I've got ride on
- 44:48my fastball. That can be a swing in this
- 44:49fastball. Heck yeah.
- 44:51And that's that's big time. So as long as those things are
- 44:54staying pretty consistent, I'm that's what I'm happy with.
- 44:57And I think if I had to put anything and point a figure to
- 45:00anything, it'd definitely be the flex, bro, just because that's,
- 45:03that's the only thing that's really changed for me throughout
- 45:07my two rehabs and throughout my baseball career.
- 45:10And it's been pretty surreal to see it happen.
- 45:13Again, I appreciate that. So thank you.
- 45:16So much though, no, it really does mean a lot.
- 45:18It's cool to be a part of this journey.
- 45:21So I guess what's the ramp up look like then?
- 45:25Are you hoping that you can be a starter this year keeping or try
- 45:29to keep workloads smaller? Come out of the pen?
- 45:32What makes the most sense for the team for you?
- 45:37Yeah, I mean, we have a really, really good staff this year.
- 45:40Our coach has brought in a lot of really good guys and they're
- 45:43also really talented guys, which is awesome to see.
- 45:45So we were hoping for a really Goodyear and it ultimately just
- 45:47depends what the ballclub needs. So if it's a starter, if it's a,
- 45:50if it's a reliever, that's at the end of the day just want to
- 45:53get wins. That's the big thing.
- 45:55That's what matters at the end of the day.
- 45:56So whatever role that is, that's, that's what I'm all
- 45:59about. Obviously everybody thinks
- 46:00starting's cool. That's a big thing.
- 46:02But I think being a bullpen guy is also pretty cool.
- 46:04You don't know when you're throwing and you get put into
- 46:06the fire real quick and it kind of shows you what you're made
- 46:09of. And that's, I think there's a
- 46:12lot to be said about that as well.
- 46:14Nice. And then do you have any road
- 46:17trips series circled this year? Of course, the rivalry with BGSU
- 46:22is always exciting. You got it.
- 46:23You got to win that. We open up at Oregon which.
- 46:27No way. Yeah, it might be a little cold,
- 46:31but I've never been to Oregon and I am excited to go.
- 46:33It should be a really cool trip and get to see a lot of
- 46:36different things and I'm really excited for that one.
- 46:39I want to say we go down to North Carolina maybe after that.
- 46:43So yeah, so we get to go see some really cool places and I'm
- 46:46really excited for that. And there's nothing like going
- 46:48on a road trip with the guys. So that's.
- 46:50Definitely get tested early too. Yeah, which I mean, Oregon's
- 46:53obviously got a really good baseball team.
- 46:55Funny enough, they're my head coach is the head coach that
- 46:57recruited me to Purdue. So really, yeah, it's a small
- 47:01world, I guess you could say. So looking forward to it.
- 47:03It'll be a lot of fun and hopefully maybe get a win or
- 47:05two. That'd be the biggest thing.
- 47:07So yeah, it should be a good time.
- 47:09Nice, And then what are you studying right now?
- 47:12So I got my undergrad in finance.
- 47:14I actually got my undergrad from Purdue in finance and I'm
- 47:17currently getting my MBA in finance as well.
- 47:19I'm a big finance. I guess you could say finance
- 47:21bro. That's the kind of the general
- 47:23term. But do.
- 47:25You have your best. Exactly.
- 47:26I got my vest. I've got my polos in the in the
- 47:29closet if you'd like to see that.
- 47:30I got a bunch of those all golf polos.
- 47:32Have to be after the hat. Do you have a little comb over
- 47:36going? I usually I do.
- 47:37I mean, usually it's to this side.
- 47:39I don't got anything in it right now.
- 47:40But yeah, like the definition of one.
- 47:43I love analytics. That's why I'm a big metrics
- 47:45guy. I love looking at them.
- 47:47I love trying to figure them out.
- 47:48So yeah, all about finance. So if baseball didn't exist,
- 47:53would you be financial analyst? What specific field?
- 47:57Or. Wealth management, what's your
- 47:59thing? Yeah, I'd love to get into
- 48:01investment management. That's like portfolio
- 48:04allocations, kind of figuring out your mutual funds, your
- 48:06ETFs. But at the end of the day, I do
- 48:08want to stay in the Midwest. I'm a Midwest guy, born and
- 48:11raised, and I don't want to leave it.
- 48:12And you don't really have those opportunities as much in the
- 48:15Midwest as you do the bigger cities.
- 48:17So most likely I'll probably go to the financial analyst, the
- 48:19the wealth management route and a lot of great people within the
- 48:22wealth management field and they say they love it.
- 48:24So that seems and you get to build a lot of awesome personal
- 48:28relationships with people. I think that's the biggest
- 48:30thing. So yeah, just any of those
- 48:32options and kind of see where it takes me.
- 48:34So are you the guy I should be talking to about crypto?
- 48:38I'm not a crypto guy. I have a lot of friends that are
- 48:41crypto guys. Yeah, that's because you're in
- 48:43the baseball world. Yeah, it's the number one
- 48:45crypto. Crypto and day trading, I mean,
- 48:48those two things are like the big things ever.
- 48:50But no, I, I sit in those conversations and I am I'm a
- 48:54minority. I guess you could say I do not
- 48:57understand crypto. I don't understand the science
- 49:00behind it. It's too volatile for me.
- 49:03It goes up and down too much. I'm a big like buy and hold guy.
- 49:07Get a good company, figure out what's good about it.
- 49:10If they hold the competitive advantage, that's my type of
- 49:12company. So I'm a much different investor
- 49:16than my account, you could say. Well, then I'm not sure you're
- 49:19built for indie ball. I know, I know, the hope is to
- 49:22play some affiliated ball post college.
- 49:25But indie ball, I tell you man, that is all crypto.
- 49:29Crypto conspiracies. I can't imagine it.
- 49:33I've only one buddy the other day texting like Bitcoin's up.
- 49:37You need to start thinking about buying.
- 49:38I'm like, dude, I, I don't understand it.
- 49:41And then there's companies along with Bitcoin that he's getting
- 49:45into and I'm like, you know, way more than me.
- 49:48So yeah, buy and hold and see where it takes me.
- 49:51That's that's my thought process.
- 49:54Then anything else you got going on besides baseball, school,
- 49:58anything that like are you a golf guy?
- 50:00Anything else excites you? Uber big, big time golf guy I'm
- 50:04actually going after after this is done.
- 50:07I've got a few time after this. I've already played two times
- 50:10this week. So what are you playing at
- 50:12today? I'm going out to Maumee Bay.
- 50:15Love that track. Very nice track.
- 50:17Hard track. Very nice I'm.
- 50:19Incredibly difficult, especially this time of year.
- 50:22Oh yeah, when the winds blowing and it's all open, it makes for
- 50:26a good time though. I'm a big, I play a legacy.
- 50:29I play a legacy a lot. Another great one.
- 50:31I mean Legacy is just like a slightly easier mom eBay.
- 50:35Exactly. Yeah, that's the one.
- 50:37I like Legacy because it's nice and nice and easy.
- 50:40That's like a perfect combination.
- 50:42And it's on the cheaper side. I mean, a college student, I
- 50:44don't have that much money in the bank right now, so gotta
- 50:47take as many cheap options as I can get.
- 50:49So Legacy is like, perfect. Yeah.
- 50:51Legacy is ideal. Yeah.
- 50:53Last time I was up in Toledo, the two courses I played were
- 50:56Legacy and Mommy Bay. And Legacy was my prep day for
- 51:00Mommy Bay. Yeah, because I mean, we're
- 51:02going my butt. They all wanted to play Maumee
- 51:05Bay and I'm like guys, it's like howling outside like you're
- 51:08going to hit a ball. You got to hit a ball 2 fairways
- 51:10over to get it in your fairway. So like, we'll see.
- 51:13We'll see what we go and see what we shoot and have a good
- 51:16time with it. I mean, Legacy can blow a little
- 51:18bit too. I the other day it was pretty
- 51:20windy and it was blowing as well.
- 51:22Yeah. Well, hey, that's fall golf in
- 51:25the Midwest. If you can handle that, you're
- 51:27you're built for May and June. That's right, yeah.
- 51:31So I mean, me and my pops will always take a golf trip here and
- 51:33there, so we're going out to Arizona in December to go play
- 51:37some courses, so. That's very cool.
- 51:39He's also a big golfer. He actually beat me the other
- 51:41day. He won't let me hear the end of
- 51:42it, so I got to get my game right, so he does.
- 51:45That doesn't happen again. Spoken like a true pitcher I
- 51:48guess you are built for built for pro ball so hopefully
- 51:51everything works out for you. I.
- 51:53Appreciate it. Thank you so much.
- 51:56Yeah, you got the coffee, you got golf.
- 51:58You you're checking all the boxes.
- 52:01And I hope so. I hope my coffee is not too
- 52:03white girlish. But it's all right.
- 52:04My girlfriend will give me crap for it but it's OK.
- 52:09All right, man. Well, I really appreciate the
- 52:10time today. That's everything I have for
- 52:13you. Unless there's anything else you
- 52:15want to throw our way, you feel like we missed anything.
- 52:18I think we had it all. It was awesome.
- 52:19It was a good time. Perfect.
- 52:21Well, go Rockets, Toledo, all that stuff.
- 52:27And it was a pleasure to get to talk to you and hear your story.
- 52:31I'm sure the audience appreciated it.
- 52:33So yeah, man, this was awesome. Can't wait to follow what the
- 52:37season holds for you. It it's going to be great to see
- 52:40how this all plays out and. Looking forward to it, it'll be
- 52:44a good one for sure. For sure.
- 52:46And to all the listeners out there, thanks for laying back
- 52:48with us.
