- 0:02Uh Joel, Alex was in here just a moment
- 0:04ago. Talk about how big the running game
- 0:06is in y'all's offense and just you guys
- 0:10went out and got several, you know, top
- 0:12running backs out of the portal. What
- 0:13was the importance of getting that kind
- 0:15of depth and utilizing it on on game
- 0:17days?
- 0:18>> Yeah, I think it all starts with uh
- 0:22Jeremiah Cobb. You know,
- 0:25he was here, he's played here. um he was
- 0:29really productive a year ago and behind
- 0:31him there's not a ton of uh just
- 0:35experience and and proven you know
- 0:39production. So you got to have depth at
- 0:41that position. you know, regardless of
- 0:43what offense that you play in and the
- 0:46way that we play. Um, with the tempo,
- 0:50there's got to be guys that are ready to
- 0:52be fresh, you know, at all times. And
- 0:55it's it's what we start by, you know,
- 0:59that that's where our offense starts is
- 1:01running the rock and being physical. And
- 1:04those guys are, you know, inherently
- 1:06going to get banged up and nicked up,
- 1:08you know, as the year goes on. and you
- 1:10got to have guys that are ready to go in
- 1:11there and play. But, uh, just building
- 1:14building some support around Jeremiah
- 1:17will be huge, you know, moving forward.
- 1:19You know, he's he's proven that he can
- 1:21play at a really high level and he's
- 1:23going to have to do that and improve,
- 1:25you know, and get better for us as we
- 1:26move forward. But to add some of the
- 1:29guys in that room, there's a bunch of
- 1:31them right now and it'll be fun to get
- 1:34into February and get into spring
- 1:35practice and kind of see got to get some
- 1:37of those guys healthy. you know, some of
- 1:39those guys are coming. The season wasn't
- 1:41too long ago, and you know, it's uh
- 1:44that's a that's a huge
- 1:49like that's who we are. Our identity is
- 1:51going to be to line up and be able to
- 1:53run the football, that's where
- 1:54everything starts. So, getting those
- 1:57guys in, learning the system, and
- 2:00getting them out there on the field
- 2:02February, spring, summer, fall camp, you
- 2:06know, before the season. This offense is
- 2:08a lot different, you know, from from
- 2:10what most of them are coming from. So,
- 2:12we got to get these guys healthy. Got to
- 2:14get them comfortable and get them ready
- 2:16to go. But that's a that's a room where
- 2:17we got to have depth. Jason, Peter, and
- 2:21then Bill Jason undercover. Just talk
- 2:25the how important it is to have not only
- 2:29three of you guys coming on the
- 2:30offensive side, but but goish as well.
- 2:32that group of guys and then bringing in
- 2:34players from USF to be able to kind of
- 2:36hit the ground running and and get this
- 2:38thing started on the right foot.
- 2:40>> Yeah. I mean, it's it's hard to even
- 2:42like quantify how how much further
- 2:44ahead, you know, that we'll be. It's a
- 2:47game changer. Um to have coaches like
- 2:50the first time when when we got to South
- 2:52Florida, obviously there was man,
- 2:55everything was everything was brand new.
- 2:57It was a brand new coaching staff. Um,
- 3:00where I was coming from, I didn't know
- 3:02anybody, you know, but Coach Gooish. And
- 3:05we spent, man, that was a that was a
- 3:08really important winter time and spring
- 3:10for me personally, but it was brand new
- 3:13to the players. It was brand new to the
- 3:15coaches. And to walk through the door
- 3:18right now and to have players and
- 3:20coaches that have just been doing it
- 3:22together for the last three years, um,
- 3:25is huge. So the amount of time that
- 3:29we're able to spend doing other things
- 3:32instead of teaching everybody how this
- 3:34thing works um way way ahead of schedule
- 3:37compared to three years ago.
- 3:40>> Peter Peter.com I guess kind of
- 3:42following up on that coach was talking
- 3:44about play calling earlier described it
- 3:46as kind of collective with with you and
- 3:48the offensive staff. I guess when you
- 3:50have the relationship that you have with
- 3:51him and some of the other guys how much
- 3:53easier is that? How how does that kind
- 3:55of work from your perspective?
- 3:57>> Yeah, I mean we got a we we've got an
- 3:59awesome staff and you know that's that's
- 4:03one thing I'm really fired up about. You
- 4:04know, the guys that came with us, Cody
- 4:08Burns, um we've only had a chance to
- 4:11work together since this time last year.
- 4:13Um so that was really the new piece, you
- 4:16know, on our staff a year ago. But man,
- 4:19he's been awesome. he was in this
- 4:21offense before, so that transition's
- 4:23kind of been, you know, seamless. Um,
- 4:26Tyler Houdanic, you know, man, he he's
- 4:30he's been in this thing probably longer
- 4:31than anybody, and he played in a similar
- 4:34offense and has been coaching in it
- 4:36really his entire career. He's been
- 4:38incredible for me to learn from. They're
- 4:41all really good coaches. And then the
- 4:43two guys that we hired um when we got
- 4:45here,
- 4:46they've been in this league. uh coach
- 4:49Porter's been in this program.
- 4:52So to say that I'm man really excited
- 4:55that we were able to bring the guys, you
- 4:57know, that we did with us and we got a
- 4:59ton of guys off the field that were all
- 5:01coming from South Florida as well, which
- 5:03those guys are all all going to be
- 5:05critical to our success and player
- 5:07development, teaching, how this offense
- 5:09works, practice, game planning, all of
- 5:12that. But when you when you have a
- 5:14really good group of people that like
- 5:16working together and that starts with
- 5:18the head coach, he spends a lot of time
- 5:20with us, you know, and spent a ton of
- 5:23time three years ago teaching everybody
- 5:24in that room how this thing works. And
- 5:26he's been really successful in that role
- 5:28as a coordinator. Um, it's fun. you
- 5:31know, we have a great time, but in terms
- 5:33of, you know, collaborating and play
- 5:35calling and and doing all that, man,
- 5:38when when there's times uh where we need
- 5:40to collaborate and figure out what the
- 5:42best thing to do is, I think we got a
- 5:44great relationship, you know, across the
- 5:46board. So, we're blessed. We get we got
- 5:49really good people, you know, that are
- 5:50coaching the guys here.
- 5:53>> Bill Cameron with the drive on ESPN 1067
- 5:56had to go out and get a complete new
- 5:58offensive line. really only only three
- 6:00guys that were here returning. Just your
- 6:02your thoughts on the ability to to bring
- 6:04those guys in. Obviously, I would guess
- 6:06led by Colton Cole from from USF.
- 6:09>> Yeah, you know, that was uh man, what a
- 6:12what a task, you know, when you don't
- 6:14have anybody you walk in walk into a
- 6:17program and not one guy um there were
- 6:20some there were some good players, you
- 6:22know, on the offensive line a year ago.
- 6:24Um not one of those guys is going to
- 6:26have a chance to be coming back. Kale,
- 6:29you know, played some for a young for a
- 6:31young guy, which was pretty incredible.
- 6:33But you got to rebuild a a whole room.
- 6:36Um,
- 6:37essentially,
- 6:39to come in here in in January and come
- 6:42to a new school, learn a new offense,
- 6:44meet new coaches, and start over, you
- 6:46know, kind kind of starting from
- 6:48scratch. To be able to bring the guys
- 6:50from South Florida will be huge. Um,
- 6:53Cole Best really, you know, what what he
- 6:56did for us in the last year and a half
- 7:00at South Florida was you you can't put a
- 7:03a a you know, you you can't even tell
- 7:06anybody how important that guy was to
- 7:08just the the culture, not just on
- 7:11offense, but the culture of that
- 7:12football team, specifically on offense,
- 7:15what he did with the leadership, with
- 7:16the offensive line, and then how he
- 7:18played on the field. we became a
- 7:20different team when when he took over,
- 7:22you know, at center. So to have him and
- 7:24then you bring Skinner with him, those
- 7:27guys and what they've got to do a great
- 7:28job of and all the guys from South
- 7:30Florida, um they've got to do a great
- 7:32job of leading, you know, because they
- 7:34know what it looks like. They know what
- 7:36the schedule is. They know what the
- 7:38lifting is going to be. They know how we
- 7:41practice. And these guys got to be great
- 7:43leaders for us. But to say that we've
- 7:45got those two guys to be able to, you
- 7:47know, be in front of an offensive line
- 7:49group that's really everybody else is
- 7:52kind of starting from from zero, man,
- 7:55it's it's huge. Like you're you you
- 7:57can't quantify how important that is,
- 7:59but man, we're going to be well ahead of
- 8:02where we would be if they weren't here
- 8:04for sure.
- 8:06>> Let's go. Nathan, Brian, Jerry, Joe,
- 8:08Nathan King, offering undercover. We've
- 8:10heard coach go talk a few times about
- 8:12Byron Brown and what he brings as a
- 8:14player, but for you having been his
- 8:16position coach for a few years and
- 8:18having had a close relationship with
- 8:19him. What's what's your outlook on what
- 8:22has made him so successful over the
- 8:23years and how excited are you to be able
- 8:25to coach him another year here at Har?
- 8:26>> Yeah. Yeah. The way the way that it's
- 8:28all worked out is, you know, not no one
- 8:31would have ever guessed that this was
- 8:34going to be in the cards. So, uh it's a
- 8:37really special, you know, opportunity
- 8:39for myself, for him to be together, you
- 8:43know, for one more year. But he's just a
- 8:46uh when you guys get a chance to meet
- 8:48him, he's a great human being, you know,
- 8:51number one. And from the time we got to
- 8:54Tampa, he was already there. He played a
- 8:56little bit right on the tail end of that
- 8:58that true freshman year that he had. And
- 9:01uh you know he was he was young you know
- 9:03he's young for his for as great as it is
- 9:06and there was a lot of maturing and
- 9:09growing to do in a lot of lot of ways on
- 9:12the field off the field um just growing
- 9:15as a leader. But what what he's been
- 9:19from day one is he's been the same guy
- 9:21every single day. his process in terms
- 9:24of what what he brings to the building
- 9:28as a worker, whether it's the weight
- 9:30room, whether it's meeting about
- 9:32football, whether it's on the field,
- 9:35whatever it is, he's infectious, you
- 9:38know, and the coaches, the coaches feel
- 9:40that energy, the players feel that
- 9:42energy. And I think what happened over
- 9:43the course of time um in the last three
- 9:46years and he got hurt you know the
- 9:49second year we were there and that was a
- 9:51uh man that was a that was a big blow
- 9:54you know to the program not just that
- 9:56the quarterback is not he's not out
- 9:58there playing anymore just people feed
- 10:01off of him you know and I think where he
- 10:04started his career when we weren't there
- 10:07and then man we didn't think he was
- 10:08going to be the starting quarterback
- 10:09when we started fall camp that first
- 10:11year And the guy that was supposed to be
- 10:14the guy, man, he was coming off an
- 10:16injury, wasn't ready to ready to go yet.
- 10:19And Byron had earned the opportunity to
- 10:22be the two at that point. And he was the
- 10:24next guy in. And all he did was take it
- 10:27and run. You know, he didn't he didn't
- 10:29look back at all. There was never a
- 10:31doubt in our mind if it was going to be
- 10:33anybody else. And he just got so much
- 10:36better and so much more confident on the
- 10:38field as we went. But that very first
- 10:41game when we realized
- 10:44it was real football. Like we hadn't
- 10:46seen this guy get tackled. We hadn't
- 10:47seen him play in a real football game.
- 10:50He's tough as nails, you know, and he's
- 10:53full of grit. He's a great competitor.
- 10:55And I think that just man, Byron Brown
- 10:59just kind of inspired that football
- 11:01program to rally around him and he's
- 11:04going to do the same thing here. So,
- 11:06we're fired up, you know, to to be, you
- 11:10know, together at another place and and
- 11:13to be able to do it right here, man.
- 11:14It's it's I don't think you could write
- 11:18it up any better.
- 11:19>> Go Brian Jerry and then Mike to wrap us
- 11:22up.
- 11:22>> Joe on three sports.com. I just wanted
- 11:24to ask you about Alex told us that he
- 11:27had a really high hit rate when it came
- 11:29to calling touchdown plays. Is that
- 11:31true? Was he exaggerating a little bit?
- 11:33>> No, he he was telling the truth. He was
- 11:35uh he was over 90% I think you know this
- 11:39year. So uh he was he was right on time.
- 11:43There was some there were some timely
- 11:44timely calls that uh we'll take him. You
- 11:48know
- 11:49>> just to follow up I do like the process
- 11:51that y'all have in play. He said that
- 11:53you know during a drive it be pretty
- 11:55quick and you be the one but between
- 11:57drives there's a lot of give and take.
- 11:58How do you like
- 11:59>> Yeah. I think that that's where man I I
- 12:03don't know. Uh, I've never really been
- 12:05on a staff.
- 12:07you know, when I was at Iowa State,
- 12:10which is, you know, my only other
- 12:13experience at this level of football,
- 12:15there's always been a lot of uh
- 12:19conversation, as much as there can be in
- 12:21between drives, um, whenever you have
- 12:24the time to talk about what's going on,
- 12:26like there's a lot of smart people, you
- 12:29know, on these coaching staffs, offense,
- 12:32defense, on every team around the
- 12:33country. the way that we've always done
- 12:35it where where I've been. And we're
- 12:36going to we're going to be able to try
- 12:39to get to what we think is the best
- 12:41thing, you know, to start out a drive
- 12:43and then yeah, once we get going, it's
- 12:46going to go really fast and that's going
- 12:48to that's going to be on my shoulders.
- 12:49But, uh, I'm also going to listen when I
- 12:52feel like I need to do that. You know,
- 12:54if I'm if I'm going to be convicted
- 12:56about, hey, we got to do this, that, or
- 12:58the other, then we're going to do it.
- 13:00And that that is what it is. But, you
- 13:02know, if there's any kind of situation
- 13:04that comes up in a game where, man, KB's
- 13:07got a thought, Hood's got a thought, A
- 13:08H's got a thought, man, I'm going to
- 13:10listen and we're going to try to put our
- 13:12kids in the best situation to go be
- 13:14successful. So,
- 13:16um, that's the only way that I know and
- 13:19and it's worked out pretty good for us
- 13:20so far. Sure.
- 13:23>> Coach Jerry number third.com. When you
- 13:25look at the wide receivers you guys
- 13:26brought in from USF, you know, how do
- 13:28you see them contributing to the offense
- 13:30this fall? And then your conversation
- 13:31with them now, what's kind of like their
- 13:32goals for the season?
- 13:34>> Um, man, I I see them being ready to uh
- 13:39number one, as soon as they get the
- 13:41opportunity to go out there and
- 13:43practice, I see these guys as having to
- 13:45be leaders, number one. um and being
- 13:50able to be an example for everybody else
- 13:52cuz what we do is man there there's a
- 13:55lot of people that that that do similar
- 13:58things but how how it's done um for us
- 14:01there's a lot of detail and there's a
- 14:03lot of time that that that has been
- 14:04invested in the guys that are here with
- 14:06us from South Florida. So the first
- 14:09expectation is these guys go out here
- 14:12and you know all these guys man I can't
- 14:14say enough just seeing them in the
- 14:16weight room a little bit like these guys
- 14:19are working really hard but man man
- 14:21these guys that know how this offense
- 14:22works are going to have to lead lead and
- 14:25compete and if those are the guys that
- 14:27wind up being the guys on Saturday in
- 14:29the fall man we expect them to go
- 14:31produce you know just like they did a
- 14:33year ago for us and you know a lot of
- 14:35those guys were young you know we we
- 14:37played
- 14:38true freshman all over the place.
- 14:40There's two guys that played in the very
- 14:42first game against Boise and that's a
- 14:45little bit, at least in my experience at
- 14:48this level, a little bit unheard of. You
- 14:50know, you're you're a little hesitant to
- 14:52throw one of those guys out there unless
- 14:54you really really trust them. And there
- 14:55hasn't been that many guys um in my
- 14:58experience that that's been the case
- 14:59with, but we played two of them in the
- 15:02very first game. Um
- 15:04and there were some freshman things that
- 15:07happened, you know, um to be expected,
- 15:10but then the very next week, you know,
- 15:13um one of them's got seven or eight
- 15:14catches, you know, against Florida, you
- 15:16know, as a true freshman on a pretty big
- 15:17stage. So, I think that's a credit to
- 15:20coach Burns. Like, these guys came in
- 15:23the door and they're pretty intelligent
- 15:26dudes. They learn fast and when when it
- 15:29got to the season, um, we trust them,
- 15:34you know, they they they put they put it
- 15:37on video in practice in fall camp,
- 15:39spring ball. Some of those guys were
- 15:41with us in that first spring and man,
- 15:43they were the best guys. So, whoever
- 15:46that winds up being for us, man, we're
- 15:47going to expect them to go be as as good
- 15:50as they can be and to be one of the best
- 15:52offenses in the country.
- 15:56Michael for Auburn. Uh, coach, you've
- 15:59been talking about Jeremiah Cob and his
- 16:01importance in the run game here, but
- 16:04Byron Brown carried the ball 175 times
- 16:07last year. How do you plan to balance
- 16:09his role in the run game moving forward
- 16:11in the
- 16:12>> Yeah, that's uh that's I think one of
- 16:15the the most fun parts of of my job and
- 16:18and us as an offensive staff is figuring
- 16:21out
- 16:23what we're going to look like. you know,
- 16:25it's uh we pretty much have a brand new
- 16:27team, you know what I mean? Um, so
- 16:31that's that's the task
- 16:34at hand for us is to figure out,
- 16:38man, where we make adjustments, you
- 16:40know, from what we've done um the last
- 16:42three years at the last place to what we
- 16:45look like now. And I don't have that
- 16:47answer exactly right now, but Byron
- 16:51Brown, whatever offense, you know, he's
- 16:54in, you'd be silly not to use him in all
- 16:57the tools that he has. Um,
- 17:00he's easily the best running quarterback
- 17:02that I've ever seen. Um, it's really
- 17:05natural for him and a lot of those runs
- 17:08aren't
- 17:10all the time like guaranteed that it's
- 17:13going to be designed for him. you know,
- 17:14a lot of the things that we do in our
- 17:16offense, man, if you take away this
- 17:19option and this option, all of a sudden,
- 17:21he's got the ball. And that's part of
- 17:23everyday offense for us. Um, and what he
- 17:26can do on his feet, you know, scrambling
- 17:28and and extending plays that way, man,
- 17:31we're going to use those tools, you
- 17:32know, however we can, but at the at the
- 17:34end of the day, we got to keep them
- 17:35healthy, you know, to the best of our
- 17:37ability and use them timely um and not
- 17:41get them worn down. But, uh, he's been
- 17:45one of the best running backs that we've
- 17:47had at South Florida, if that makes
- 17:50sense. Um, however you want to slice it,
- 17:53he's been one of the most talented guys
- 17:54we've we've had. So, from one week to
- 17:58the next, what that looked like, man,
- 17:59might be completely different. So,
- 18:02we'll we'll figure that out as we go.
- 18:04But I think that's uh that's part of the
- 18:06fun for us now is to kind of be able to
- 18:09actually get into football and figure
- 18:10out, man, we're going to be playing in
