- 0:00Speaker 1: The following program is produced by the Tech Talk Radio Network.
- 0:04Speaker 1: Welcome to another episode of tech Talk Radio.
- 0:07Speaker 2: I'm Andy Taylor, I'm Sean to Ward, and I'm actually
- 0:10Speaker 2: here for once.
- 0:12Speaker 1: Well. It's funny because the last like three four weeks,
- 0:15Speaker 1: we've kind of opened the show talking about weather and
- 0:18Speaker 1: how you know, Sean, You're you're in an area that
- 0:22Speaker 1: just seems to be getting like.
- 0:23Speaker 2: The brenhammered y ginhammered. And I don't know what it
- 0:26Speaker 2: is about tech Talk like this show just draws the
- 0:30Speaker 2: storms to us. Uh, you know, from have it you
- 0:34Speaker 2: can hear what you've heard. It's interesting if you go
- 0:36Speaker 2: back and listen to the show over the last couple
- 0:38Speaker 2: of years, whenever we record, it's always it's always at night,
- 0:41Speaker 2: right right, and it's you've we've heard the storms, Yeah,
- 0:47Speaker 2: the thunder. You guys have seen the lightning when my
- 0:49Speaker 2: computer was in a different spot. And this year we've
- 0:53Speaker 2: we've just had a string of bad luck with storms
- 0:56Speaker 2: rolling through. And we were gonna record last night, ye
- 1:01Speaker 2: but justin ended up having a family thing come up,
- 1:04Speaker 2: and then I had no power due to a what
- 1:08Speaker 2: do they call them? A microburst? Wow, I think that
- 1:11Speaker 2: came through there was so.
- 1:14Speaker 1: How bad was this microburst?
- 1:17Speaker 2: So for those of you who don't know what a
- 1:19Speaker 2: microburst is, it's just a very quick, sudden downburst of
- 1:23Speaker 2: low pressure that just comes through just it's just usually
- 1:26Speaker 2: has like seventy eighty mili hour winds, And there was
- 1:30Speaker 2: no indication that the weather was going to be severe.
- 1:32Speaker 2: Yesterday we had some thunders of lightning and some light rain,
- 1:35Speaker 2: but it was all of a sudden, just ungodly windy outside, like,
- 1:42Speaker 2: oh God, something's happening outside. It's like so I poked
- 1:45Speaker 2: my head out and it was like you would have
- 1:47Speaker 2: thought a tornado had just rolled through, like small branches,
- 1:51Speaker 2: some big branches down in the front yard, in the backyard.
- 1:55Speaker 2: And then I came back downstairs and a couple minutes later,
- 2:00Speaker 2: the power flickered and then went.
- 2:01Speaker 1: Out completely out. No power completely.
- 2:05Speaker 2: Out, completely out. There were all over the Greater South
- 2:10Speaker 2: Bend and Greater area was without power. Kaitlin was just
- 2:13Speaker 2: picking up the boys from daycare. They had no power there.
- 2:16Speaker 2: She had to go through pretty much every stop light
- 2:18Speaker 2: on the way home as a four way stop like
- 2:20Speaker 2: that kind of thing. Right, So, and then up into
- 2:23Speaker 2: Michigan it was pretty bad. And what happened was just
- 2:27Speaker 2: this wind came through and just took out a ton
- 2:29Speaker 2: of branches. They just fell onto power lines all out,
- 2:34Speaker 2: and so it just took out power for a big
- 2:37Speaker 2: chunk of our area.
- 2:39Speaker 1: Didn't Some of the power lines that went down caused
- 2:41Speaker 1: fires as well.
- 2:43Speaker 2: Yeah, so up in Michigan, there's some videos. If you
- 2:45Speaker 2: fear you're looking, just google portage Michigan power lines and
- 2:48Speaker 2: you'll come up with some videos of like one fell
- 2:51Speaker 2: in a car, caught the car on fire. There's some
- 2:55Speaker 2: you know, there's some really interesting videos of like the
- 2:58Speaker 2: arcing lines, like catching he's on fire and other things
- 3:01Speaker 2: like that. It's it's pretty wild. I mean, power lines
- 3:05Speaker 2: are dangerous obviously, right, So I never approach of a
- 3:08Speaker 2: down power line, for one. And you have to be
- 3:11Speaker 2: careful because when it's when it's a power line, it
- 3:13Speaker 2: kind of the arcs make it go all over the
- 3:15Speaker 2: place and it can energize other things around, including metal
- 3:18Speaker 2: objects and you know, things like that. So it's like
- 3:21Speaker 2: it can be dangerous just to be within fifty sixty
- 3:24Speaker 2: feet of it.
- 3:24Speaker 1: So do they do me like here? So we have
- 3:28Speaker 1: monsoon seasons that like last year was kind of a
- 3:31Speaker 1: nonsoon and you know that'll be starting up more towards
- 3:35Speaker 1: our summer. But they have to remind people because power
- 3:38Speaker 1: lines do come down. There was one time where an
- 3:41Speaker 1: entire busy street that they just started, you know, just
- 3:45Speaker 1: one after another coming down. Do they do public service
- 3:48Speaker 1: messages of what to do in case one of these
- 3:52Speaker 1: power lines falls in your car.
- 3:55Speaker 2: Yes, I mean I would have. I I had a
- 3:58Speaker 2: little bit of extra training on that because when I
- 4:00Speaker 2: ran satellite trucks and live trucks for news, we had
- 4:03Speaker 2: to go through the hole, like don't put the mask
- 4:06Speaker 2: up into power lines and you know, ten feet or
- 4:09Speaker 2: more and all this stuff. So you know, if I
- 4:14Speaker 2: have to rely on my memory a little bit here,
- 4:16Speaker 2: but if your car gets hung up by a power line,
- 4:20Speaker 2: you just don't touch anything, the doorframe, anything, because it
- 4:24Speaker 2: could it could be charged. And if you can get
- 4:29Speaker 2: out or the door is open, you don't want to
- 4:32Speaker 2: just step out and take steps right because they whatever
- 4:36Speaker 2: they call it, I don't remember, ring potential I think
- 4:38Speaker 2: is what it's called, right, where the energy disperses in
- 4:42Speaker 2: rings outwards, So you actually are supposed to hop and
- 4:46Speaker 2: try and hop in like three or four foot so
- 4:50Speaker 2: to get away from your car, but trying not to
- 4:52Speaker 2: touch anything. And yeah, so it's just I have a
- 4:56Speaker 2: little bit of extra training on that, just from when
- 4:58Speaker 2: I worked in news, but it it could be scary because.
- 5:01Speaker 1: We were all talking about it last night and of
- 5:03Speaker 1: course you mentioned, you know, power was out, and Justin
- 5:07Speaker 1: of course had to say, don't you wish you would
- 5:09Speaker 1: have had a power wall, which I know that you're
- 5:11Speaker 1: gonna trading from from Tesla, but you what did you
- 5:17Speaker 1: have to be able to get you through the night
- 5:19Speaker 1: because power wasn't restored into what three o'clock the next morning? Right?
- 5:24Speaker 2: Yeah, So we have a I have a predator thirty
- 5:29Speaker 2: five hundred watt inverting generator right that runs on It
- 5:33Speaker 2: runs on just regular onuletting gas. And last last last fall,
- 5:40Speaker 2: I had an electrician come in and put it outlet
- 5:43Speaker 2: and give me a breaker into my main breaker box
- 5:47Speaker 2: so that I can in turn feed the bus bar
- 5:49Speaker 2: in my breaker box with the generator and then interconnects
- 5:53Speaker 2: like I kill my main power right, energize the generator line,
- 5:57Speaker 2: and then I can then key on things in my
- 6:01Speaker 2: house to have provide AC power to the house.
- 6:03Speaker 1: So you could still have your refrigerator, freezer. Yep, you
- 6:07Speaker 1: could have.
- 6:07Speaker 2: Yeah, we ran pretty much everything except the water pump
- 6:10Speaker 2: because the water pump runs on two twenty. I don't
- 6:12Speaker 2: have a two twenty volt generator. My generator only does
- 6:15Speaker 2: one ten, right, so it won't run my water pump,
- 6:19Speaker 2: but it runs. And it's not going to be strong
- 6:21Speaker 2: enough to run my huge AC unit either, but it'll
- 6:24Speaker 2: run pretty much everything else. I'm obviously not gonna run
- 6:28Speaker 2: my computer and waste energy just doing nothing, but it'll
- 6:32Speaker 2: run the furnace because the furnace is powered financial gas, right,
- 6:36Speaker 2: It's just not an electric feater and furnace, So it'll
- 6:38Speaker 2: run the blower so we can provide heat if we
- 6:41Speaker 2: had a power outage in the wintertime, et cetera. I
- 6:43Speaker 2: could run it and have heat. But I also have
- 6:47Speaker 2: my DJI power bank, my DJI one thousand, which at
- 6:53Speaker 2: midnight last night, I didn't want to let the generators
- 6:55Speaker 2: run all night by itself, Like I turned everything off
- 6:58Speaker 2: and just ran my frame and freezer off of that
- 7:03Speaker 2: power wall or power wall. But the DJA power one thousand,
- 7:07Speaker 2: and it only got down to like seventy five oh
- 7:12Speaker 2: from when I plugged it at midnight until we woke
- 7:15Speaker 2: up at six thirty am. So from the Yeah, well
- 7:19Speaker 2: so this is something that I do now everybody else does. Right.
- 7:23Speaker 2: A lot of people when they lose power, they just
- 7:25Speaker 2: don't do anything. They just go go, go to bed whatever.
- 7:28Speaker 2: And when the power comes back on, everything just comes
- 7:31Speaker 2: back up hard. Right. The power surges right back.
- 7:33Speaker 1: To it right right.
- 7:35Speaker 2: Ideally, what you're supposed to do is go and turn
- 7:38Speaker 2: your mane off right so that when the power does
- 7:42Speaker 2: get restored, it's not going to surge into your line
- 7:45Speaker 2: and have an in rush of current that could damage
- 7:49Speaker 2: like some of your like here's some of your stuff.
- 7:51Speaker 1: Say say somebody has a computer sean, and they don't
- 7:54Speaker 1: do that and they leave the computer plugged in. Should
- 7:57Speaker 1: they unplug? Like if we ever go through sitchuation where
- 8:00Speaker 1: everything's off and they don't have a ups or whatever,
- 8:03Speaker 1: so they just don't plug their computer?
- 8:05Speaker 2: Yeah, because you could. I mean, your power supplies only
- 8:07Speaker 2: to do so much to protect from rush current, right,
- 8:09Speaker 2: it's it does. Electronics are brace sensitive. They don't like
- 8:14Speaker 2: a lot of current at once. Things get hot, they
- 8:17Speaker 2: blow up. So a lot of times what I do
- 8:21Speaker 2: is if we lose power, I'll go kill my mane.
- 8:26Speaker 2: I'll unplug a bunch of stuff, like from the wall,
- 8:28Speaker 2: like the power strip that has my computer in it,
- 8:30Speaker 2: I'll plug it. The power strips to my racks, I'll
- 8:32Speaker 2: unplug them, and then I go and I go power
- 8:36Speaker 2: the generator, and then I turn on load you know,
- 8:38Speaker 2: single breaker by breaker. Okay, I need just the upstairs power.
- 8:41Speaker 2: I just need the furnace. So I'm very selective on
- 8:44Speaker 2: what I turn on. And then like last night, at midnight,
- 8:48Speaker 2: I came in, I turned the generator off and then
- 8:51Speaker 2: just left everything off, turned everything off. Yeah, So I
- 8:55Speaker 2: don't know what time the power came back on. I
- 8:58Speaker 2: just know that when I got out to use the
- 8:59Speaker 2: bathroom at four o'clock this morning, our neighbors front lamp
- 9:04Speaker 2: post light was on, so I knew we had power.
- 9:07Speaker 1: Good indusay at that point.
- 9:08Speaker 2: At that point, I went downstairs, turned the mate on,
- 9:12Speaker 2: and then went breaker by breaker and just turned things
- 9:14Speaker 2: back on until we were back to fully restored power
- 9:17Speaker 2: in the house.
- 9:18Speaker 1: Wow.
- 9:19Speaker 2: But yeah, it's not ideal to have your main just
- 9:22Speaker 2: left on with all your breakers on, because that interest
- 9:26Speaker 2: current could damage sensitive electronics, your TV, your computers, your phones,
- 9:31Speaker 2: et cetera. So it's just not ideal to do it
- 9:33Speaker 2: that way. So I don't necessarily know if that's the
- 9:36Speaker 2: right way to do it. That's the way that I've
- 9:38Speaker 2: always learned how to do it.
- 9:40Speaker 1: Right now, you've talked about possibly the idea like justin
- 9:44Speaker 1: going you know, with the panels and you know, going
- 9:47Speaker 1: the solar route. If you would have done that and
- 9:50Speaker 1: you would have had like power wall, you would really
- 9:53Speaker 1: not have been affected by this, would you or do
- 9:56Speaker 1: they do so?
- 9:57Speaker 2: I don't know. So, yeah, so I would have had
- 10:00Speaker 2: to switch over to the power. I don't know how
- 10:04Speaker 2: justice is tied in. I don't know how they're all
- 10:05Speaker 2: tied in because a lot of times with with DC
- 10:10Speaker 2: generated power, you have to have some sort of inverter
- 10:13Speaker 2: to flip it back to AC so that you can
- 10:15Speaker 2: either feed your your house bus or feedback to the grid.
- 10:19Speaker 2: So I'm not sure how if we bought a system,
- 10:22Speaker 2: how it would be tied in. I need to do
- 10:23Speaker 2: more research on that. Yeah, And I don't know if
- 10:27Speaker 2: I've go with Tesla. To be honest, I think Tesla.
- 10:30Speaker 2: I think the Testla. Yeah, I think the Tesla option
- 10:32Speaker 2: is probably the most common potentially where it's like you
- 10:40Speaker 2: buy it from Tesla, or you lease it from them,
- 10:43Speaker 2: You buy the panels, somebody comes in installs it all.
- 10:46Speaker 2: But there's a lot of diy ones you can get.
- 10:49Speaker 2: Anchor has a big power wall you can buy, and
- 10:53Speaker 2: we've looked into it, and we've been saving up money
- 10:55Speaker 2: to specifically build a small solar array in the backyard
- 11:00Speaker 2: with some bigger panels because I'm not gonna I'm not
- 11:01Speaker 2: gonna roof mount them. I don't. I don't want to
- 11:03Speaker 2: get into this business where we're gonna mount a bunch
- 11:06Speaker 2: of stuff to the roof and then in three or
- 11:09Speaker 2: four years say, well, crap, we need to replace the roof.
- 11:14Speaker 2: Now everything's gonna get unmounted, right, and then the roof
- 11:17Speaker 2: comes on and then you remount it to a brand
- 11:19Speaker 2: new roof. I'm not doing that. So we'll build a
- 11:22Speaker 2: couple of panels in the backyard. Because our backyard is
- 11:25Speaker 2: completely open and face south facing so directs on light
- 11:31Speaker 2: you almost year round, except for really close up to
- 11:35Speaker 2: the house. But we have a couple of premium spots
- 11:38Speaker 2: for where we could put a couple of large panels.
- 11:42Speaker 2: So that's the plan. You know.
- 11:44Speaker 1: When it comes to the generators, though, Sean I'm kind
- 11:47Speaker 1: of wondering because I know a lot of consumers that here,
- 11:49Speaker 1: people listening to this may have gone to Costco or
- 11:51Speaker 1: they may go to you know, Curse Hour or whatever,
- 11:55Speaker 1: and they look at some of these options there are
- 11:57Speaker 1: for buy. It could be confusing, Like I sure can
- 12:01Speaker 1: I bought a little anchor, you know, and I thought, oh,
- 12:04Speaker 1: this would be great in case I ever needed, you know,
- 12:06Speaker 1: power the phones, the computer. And then one day I
- 12:11Speaker 1: remember I wanted to use our power blower, our leaf
- 12:14Speaker 1: blower out in the backyard, and I basically would come
- 12:18Speaker 1: on and go right off, shut right off. Wasn't enough.
- 12:21Speaker 1: So people don't know what now the Predator when you
- 12:23Speaker 1: want or was that pretty expensive? Or is it Predator
- 12:28Speaker 1: or Patriot?
- 12:29Speaker 2: You have? So I have a Predator Predator, almost had
- 12:34Speaker 2: Predator drone. It's a Predator Generator. It's it's sold by
- 12:40Speaker 2: Harbor Freight, and it's considered to be a medium line.
- 12:46Speaker 2: It's not it's not a Honda e e I you
- 12:49Speaker 2: know the Honda line, or it's not a Generak. It's
- 12:52Speaker 2: not the top of the line ones you're you're going
- 12:54Speaker 2: to see a lot of home installations. But it was convenient.
- 12:58Speaker 2: It will power the our camper, it will power the
- 13:03Speaker 2: home now, but it's only one ten one ten meanings
- 13:07Speaker 2: one ten voltage, right, So it's it's an AC DC generator.
- 13:10Speaker 2: So it's generating DC power converting it. It's called an
- 13:13Speaker 2: inverting generator, converts it to AC power. It also has
- 13:16Speaker 2: DC outputs if you need it, but again we only
- 13:20Speaker 2: typically used it for the camper. Yeah, so if you
- 13:25Speaker 2: wanted it to power most other things in your home,
- 13:28Speaker 2: like your AC, your furnace, your range, your those kinds
- 13:32Speaker 2: of things, those high draw things, you would want to
- 13:35Speaker 2: get a two twenty generating inverting generator. There's a little
- 13:40Speaker 2: bit more.
- 13:40Speaker 1: Expensive, kind of like I've seen the Genera, ad GENERACS
- 13:44Speaker 1: or Champion.
- 13:46Speaker 2: You know, Costco has a couple of big, big brands
- 13:49Speaker 2: in there. So likely what I'll do is I will
- 13:53Speaker 2: likely get another additional generator for the house that will
- 13:57Speaker 2: do two twenty. Specifically so we can run the water pump.
- 14:01Speaker 2: Our water pump says it'll run on one fifteen. I
- 14:04Speaker 2: tried to run it in that mode yesterday. It does
- 14:07Speaker 2: not work. So I think it needs the two phase
- 14:10Speaker 2: of one ten to make it work properly, I need
- 14:14Speaker 2: to have an electrician to comment and tell me if
- 14:15Speaker 2: I'm right or wrong, or if I did something different,
- 14:17Speaker 2: if I did something wrong. But I tried to make
- 14:21Speaker 2: it work yesterday and it didn't. But it powered everything
- 14:23Speaker 2: else in the house, except we didn't. We didn't try
- 14:25Speaker 2: the AC because I don't wantn't want to. We didn't
- 14:27Speaker 2: need the AC. We can run fans and it's fine.
- 14:29Speaker 1: Yeah, you're not in Arizona. Now, is there a way
- 14:35Speaker 1: that people can find like, Okay, this one can run this, this,
- 14:39Speaker 1: this and this. I mean like when doing research for this,
- 14:43Speaker 1: I mean it is just basically jumping on the web
- 14:46Speaker 1: and reading reviews. What's yeah, I mean you.
- 14:49Speaker 2: Kind of have to just go based off of the
- 14:54Speaker 2: frustrating part about being without power is you have to
- 14:58Speaker 2: give up convenience. Right, You're you are not going to
- 15:03Speaker 2: be in a scenario where you're gonna be able to
- 15:05Speaker 2: do a hair dryer, the waffle iron, the microwave. You're
- 15:12Speaker 2: still top the air fryer, right, those things don't even
- 15:16Speaker 2: those high draw things that pull a thousand watts or
- 15:20Speaker 2: more out the window just you can't even don't even
- 15:24Speaker 2: plan on using anything that's going to do high draw. Right,
- 15:27Speaker 2: the generator and this is just my this is my
- 15:31Speaker 2: personal belief on this right an everybody else can be
- 15:33Speaker 2: their own thing. If you want a whole house generator,
- 15:35Speaker 2: go buy one. They're gonna be expensive. They're going to
- 15:37Speaker 2: do five six thousand watts and be able to run
- 15:40Speaker 2: your hair dryer, and you're whatever. Those are expensive. They
- 15:43Speaker 2: also require year by buy yearly maintenance or or whatever,
- 15:49Speaker 2: buy annually maintenance, so you have to do it twice
- 15:51Speaker 2: a year, and you're just running a risk of that's
- 15:57Speaker 2: you're paying more money. So I went through and kind
- 16:03Speaker 2: of categorized, Okay, what do we need? And I know, okay,
- 16:07Speaker 2: I've got thirty five hundred watts to work with. What
- 16:11Speaker 2: can I pull? How many amps am I going to
- 16:13Speaker 2: pull off? Of one? Ten? I think yesterday with everything on,
- 16:19Speaker 2: with the TV, running our internet router, some fans, and
- 16:24Speaker 2: some lights, I was maybe pulling like four amps total. Yeah,
- 16:29Speaker 2: so that would be a thousand watts maybe wow. But
- 16:36Speaker 2: you know I'm not running the air fryer quick, right, yeah?
- 16:39Speaker 2: I mean it goes, it goes quick, right because voltage
- 16:44Speaker 2: times amps equals wattage, right, So if I'm running four
- 16:48Speaker 2: amps at one hundred and ten volt says.
- 16:52Speaker 1: Four.
- 16:52Speaker 2: Yeah, whatever the math. I hate math. But so you
- 16:56Speaker 2: have to calculate that stuff right, and it's just it's hard.
- 17:01Speaker 2: People don't typically know. They just plug stuff in and works.
- 17:04Speaker 2: So you can't just be the mentality of I go
- 17:07Speaker 2: out and buy a Predator two thousand generator and it's
- 17:12Speaker 2: gonna run my ac that's not that's not realistic. So
- 17:16Speaker 2: you kind of have to do an audit on what
- 17:18Speaker 2: you what you want. So I have breakers labeled in
- 17:22Speaker 2: our breaker box that says generator. No generator got it.
- 17:27Speaker 2: So we're on the generator. If you're on the generator,
- 17:30Speaker 2: you can flip these ones up.
- 17:32Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 17:32Speaker 2: So like I don't like, we don't care. I don't
- 17:35Speaker 2: care about having stuff on in the basement. I'm not
- 17:37Speaker 2: gonna run my computers. I'm not gonna do all that
- 17:39Speaker 2: stuff that we don't power. So like most of the
- 17:41Speaker 2: basement states completely dark except some pump of the lights. Yeah,
- 17:47Speaker 2: and like the furnace can come on because that doesn't
- 17:51Speaker 2: pull the blower motor doesn't pull a lot. But I
- 17:54Speaker 2: just did an audit, like, okay, if we run, if
- 17:57Speaker 2: we run all these breakers, i'm gonna pull five five amps.
- 18:01Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 18:03Speaker 2: So it's just it's good, got it. You gotta be
- 18:06Speaker 2: you gotta be conservative about it, right. You can't just
- 18:08Speaker 2: go in expecting to have every convenience at your fingertips.
- 18:11Speaker 2: Went on a generator.
- 18:12Speaker 1: So after a big storm like you you had, you know,
- 18:16Speaker 1: obviously it got its use. Is there any prep that
- 18:19Speaker 1: you have to do for the next storm?
- 18:21Speaker 2: Do?
- 18:21Speaker 1: I mean I didn't obviously put a gas in it.
- 18:23Speaker 2: I mean keeping topped up on fresh gas. Right. Gas
- 18:26Speaker 2: does go bad? Ye, not in a not not in
- 18:30Speaker 2: a short amount of time, an couple of months, it'll
- 18:33Speaker 2: go bad. It'll varnish and start to not perform as well.
- 18:37Speaker 2: But just running the generator every I usually try and
- 18:41Speaker 2: run it once a month for about hour to two hours.
- 18:44Speaker 2: Let it warm up, let it get to temperature, put
- 18:46Speaker 2: a load on it by running the AC and the
- 18:48Speaker 2: camper or you know, plunging the toaster into it and
- 18:51Speaker 2: letting it run for a minute, just to help burn
- 18:55Speaker 2: out some of the carbon the kunk and the carburetor
- 18:57Speaker 2: and some of the other stuff because it's not it's
- 18:58Speaker 2: not electrically fuel inject it's all carbureted. And then doing
- 19:04Speaker 2: oil changes, right, I do my own oil, my own
- 19:07Speaker 2: oil changes on it. I do it every I don't
- 19:10Speaker 2: know they say you're supposed to do it every twenty
- 19:11Speaker 2: hours or something. Other generator, I typically do it once
- 19:16Speaker 2: every season beginning of the season, end of the seasons,
- 19:19Speaker 2: like camping season, right, I'll do it. I'll change the
- 19:22Speaker 2: oil before we go camping for Memorial Day weekend because
- 19:25Speaker 2: I'll use the generator, and then I'll do it before
- 19:27Speaker 2: I store it in case I need it over the wintertime.
- 19:30Speaker 2: So just keeping up on general maintenance, keeping it clean,
- 19:33Speaker 2: not letting it get too hot, not make you know,
- 19:36Speaker 2: not having it do a huge load where it's like
- 19:39Speaker 2: if you're running a ton of stuff and it bogs
- 19:41Speaker 2: down and it shuts itself off, that can damage it.
- 19:44Speaker 2: So and you know, and a lot of people don't
- 19:48Speaker 2: realize too. There are multiple fuel generators, so you can
- 19:52Speaker 2: buy trifuel generators which will run off of regular outleanded gas,
- 19:57Speaker 2: natural gas or propane. So you can buy these trifuel generators.
- 20:05Speaker 2: They have different draws on how much gas they use,
- 20:08Speaker 2: how much propain they use. But if you have natural
- 20:10Speaker 2: gas at your house, typically that's an uninterrupted supply even
- 20:14Speaker 2: when you don't have power, so you could run a
- 20:18Speaker 2: natural gas generator pretty much unlimited. You'll still pay for
- 20:22Speaker 2: the gas you're using, but you potentially have an unlimited
- 20:28Speaker 2: supply of natural gas if you're doing it that way.
- 20:31Speaker 2: Propane doesn't really have a shelf life, so if you
- 20:35Speaker 2: have LP tanks that you've stored for a long time,
- 20:38Speaker 2: they're still going to be good. That's kind of the
- 20:40Speaker 2: benefit of liquid propaine versus unleaded gas line. It has
- 20:45Speaker 2: a longer shelf life. But you know, the things to
- 20:48Speaker 2: be concerned about or be safe about, are storing the fuel,
- 20:52Speaker 2: storing your LP tanks, just general safety. Right, it gets hot,
- 20:57Speaker 2: its generator is generating heat, has an exhaust. I don't
- 21:01Speaker 2: let your kids touch it, don't point it at the
- 21:03Speaker 2: side of your house, let it melt your siding, like
- 21:06Speaker 2: turn it off, turn it off, and let it cool
- 21:07Speaker 2: down before you refill it with gas, because a lot
- 21:10Speaker 2: of times the gas pickets on the top and if
- 21:12Speaker 2: you spill it goes over the edge and could flame
- 21:15Speaker 2: up off off the exhaust or cause a fire, things
- 21:20Speaker 2: like that. So one of the things I do too
- 21:23Speaker 2: is whenever I run the generator, I have a fire
- 21:27Speaker 2: extinguisher and it goes right by the door. To the
- 21:29Speaker 2: outside where the generator is just in case, just in case,
- 21:33Speaker 2: because if there's if it catches something on fire, or
- 21:36Speaker 2: we have a fire or an incident, I can just
- 21:38Speaker 2: quickly have it ready to go. But now this one,
- 21:41Speaker 2: you're just taking it for some precautions.
- 21:42Speaker 1: I know, the anchor is portable, or the DJI is portable.
- 21:45Speaker 1: The one you have is the Patriot. Is that one
- 21:48Speaker 1: a portable unit or is it? So?
- 21:49Speaker 2: It's it's pretty big, right, it'll hold I think it
- 21:52Speaker 2: holds like four gallons of gas.
- 21:54Speaker 1: Oh man, it's a big.
- 21:56Speaker 2: It's big. It's it weighs like one hundred pounds. It's
- 21:59Speaker 2: it's not something then I'm gonna tode around and you know,
- 22:03Speaker 2: I can toss it in the I can toss it
- 22:04Speaker 2: in the bed of my pickup truck and move it
- 22:07Speaker 2: and go camping with it. But I'm not I'm not
- 22:09Speaker 2: chucking it down the street to go to the beach
- 22:12Speaker 2: or something. Right, So, and it's and it's there, it's there.
- 22:17Speaker 2: I don't think it's called whisper light. I think that's
- 22:19Speaker 2: a very Honda specific version. But it runs a lot
- 22:23Speaker 2: quieter then it's so it's got a muffler and it
- 22:27Speaker 2: was a lot quieter.
- 22:28Speaker 1: The next question does it make a lot of noise, Because.
- 22:30Speaker 2: It does make a lot of noise. It's it's not quiet,
- 22:33Speaker 2: but it's not a open frame one like you see
- 22:37Speaker 2: on construction sites and stuff like that, So it's it's
- 22:39Speaker 2: probably half the volume of one of those. But when
- 22:44Speaker 2: it's underload, like if we're running it underload, it gets
- 22:46Speaker 2: pretty loud.
- 22:47Speaker 1: Yeah. I remember a radio station I worked at in Tucson.
- 22:51Speaker 1: They had it was the size of a sprinter van.
- 22:55Speaker 1: That was a pretty thick. They had a generator. I
- 22:57Speaker 1: want to say it might have been a hon uh.
- 23:00Speaker 1: I don't know if they make them that big. All
- 23:03Speaker 1: I know is when that thing kicked on it was diesel.
- 23:06Speaker 1: It was the loudest thing. It was like a helicopter
- 23:09Speaker 1: taken off next to you, but it powered the entire
- 23:12Speaker 1: building everything.
- 23:13Speaker 2: Yeah. When we when I worked at Fox and ran
- 23:16Speaker 2: the SAT trucks and the MICROWAVEE trucks, they all had
- 23:18Speaker 2: their own on board inverting generators. So you just pop
- 23:22Speaker 2: out there it goes the genera running out of the generator.
- 23:25Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 23:26Speaker 2: The only downside was it right off the same gas. Oh,
- 23:30Speaker 2: so if if you had an improper dip for the generator.
- 23:35Speaker 2: It could run your could run you dry right, So
- 23:39Speaker 2: thankfully the ones we had were not designed to do that,
- 23:42Speaker 2: so you could only run to a quarter of a
- 23:44Speaker 2: take of gas off the generator, so that way you
- 23:47Speaker 2: had enough fuel to drive away.
- 23:49Speaker 1: I'm wondering now, maybe you know, I don't know if
- 23:51Speaker 1: you know this because you've been out of that portion
- 23:54Speaker 1: of the TV broadcasting world for a while. In radio,
- 23:58Speaker 1: we had a mobile boom box when I was in
- 24:01Speaker 1: Palm Springs and it looked like a big boom box
- 24:03Speaker 1: and it had you know, power radio on the side
- 24:05Speaker 1: and the whole bit, and it had a mast and
- 24:08Speaker 1: the mask would go up and one time our guy
- 24:11Speaker 1: may he rest in piece he's no longer with us,
- 24:13Speaker 1: not because of this. Bonte left it up and went
- 24:17Speaker 1: under a bridge and that was that was not good.
- 24:20Speaker 1: But I'm wondering, now we broad the broadcast world, do
- 24:24Speaker 1: they even need those anymore? Because so much of us
- 24:27Speaker 1: to using the internet.
- 24:28Speaker 2: You know, I actually just talked about so when I
- 24:30Speaker 2: went up to Faris to talk to the to the
- 24:32Speaker 2: senior class for the television program. Actually this was part
- 24:35Speaker 2: of my slide that I brought up was like, here's
- 24:38Speaker 2: what I worked on in twenty ten. Right, right, we
- 24:41Speaker 2: had a satellite truck. We had four microwave trucks. Bonded
- 24:44Speaker 2: cellular and cellular devices weren't a big thing yet. So
- 24:49Speaker 2: then in the emerging market of iPhones and smartphones and stuff,
- 24:53Speaker 2: a lot more people were using more digital. And as
- 24:56Speaker 2: the bandwidth got higher, and as we got three G
- 24:58Speaker 2: and four G and then now five G and six
- 25:01Speaker 2: G or whatever's coming next, these companies were able to
- 25:05Speaker 2: create what's called bonded cellular devices, meaning you have an
- 25:09Speaker 2: encoder that will take the video input, encode it and
- 25:14Speaker 2: then send those bits across six different cell phone modems.
- 25:18Speaker 1: Amazing, so and.
- 25:21Speaker 2: Multiple carriers even so to ATAT, to Verizon, to T Mobile,
- 25:25Speaker 2: to Sprint whatever. So that goes all out and the
- 25:30Speaker 2: receiver on the other end receives it all and it
- 25:32Speaker 2: has information attached to those four error correction all that
- 25:35Speaker 2: stuff and puts it all back together and gives you
- 25:38Speaker 2: a final product. You know, the disadvantages the better the
- 25:43Speaker 2: quality of the higher the latency. So you could go
- 25:46Speaker 2: to a relatively low cell coverage carrier with six cell
- 25:50Speaker 2: phone motems and go live live if you will with
- 25:55Speaker 2: a seven to eight second delay but get a good
- 25:58Speaker 2: looking picture out because of how the bonded cellular modems
- 26:02Speaker 2: were working. So that essentially took out the live truck market, right.
- 26:10Speaker 2: Satellite trucks and live trucks. Microwave trucks were expensive, and
- 26:16Speaker 2: you're talking hundreds of dollars a lot hundreds of dollars
- 26:19Speaker 2: per live shot for whatever whatever amount of time you're using,
- 26:24Speaker 2: and with how good the quality has gotten, there's no
- 26:30Speaker 2: need for those anymore.
- 26:32Speaker 1: Absolutely, it was, except except except for.
- 26:36Speaker 2: High risk, high risk, high reward scenarios where you have
- 26:41Speaker 2: a no fail scenario. A lot of backups for major,
- 26:44Speaker 2: major sporting events still go satellite. Typically they have a
- 26:48Speaker 2: one two redundancy whether it's okay, So your main your
- 26:51Speaker 2: main transmission path may be fiber, but your backup path
- 26:55Speaker 2: is satellite. So that way, if your primary IP fails,
- 27:00Speaker 2: you just flip right over back to a redundant satellite path.
- 27:03Speaker 2: All right.
- 27:04Speaker 1: So, speaking of that, an ab National Association broadcast NAP
- 27:08Speaker 1: took place. We're gonna take a quick break, we come back.
- 27:10Speaker 1: We're going to cover some of the coolest news that
- 27:13Speaker 1: came out of that. Some news also from the World
- 27:16Speaker 1: of DJI and iOS car play some stuff on that.
- 27:20Speaker 1: We'll be back with more of tech talk Radio. I'm
- 27:22Speaker 1: Andy Taylor.
- 27:23Speaker 2: I'm trying to wear find us on the web at
- 27:25Speaker 2: tech talk radio dot com. We'll be right back.
- 27:27Speaker 1: And now fac to tech talk Radio.
- 27:31Speaker 2: About two weeks ago now NAB came through and I
- 27:36Speaker 2: had to miss it.
- 27:37Speaker 1: Yeah, I remember last year.
- 27:38Speaker 2: Last year, I did a lot I did last year
- 27:40Speaker 2: at Notre Day Day and Blue Gold talk about that.
- 27:43Speaker 2: After this. It was a long week last week, long week,
- 27:48Speaker 2: but I had to miss ANAB, which is a bummer
- 27:50Speaker 2: because last year I did a segment with Andy where
- 27:53Speaker 2: I walked the floor, which was really cool.
- 27:54Speaker 1: That was awesome.
- 27:55Speaker 2: It was also my first time at NAB, so I
- 27:57Speaker 2: was blown away. So an AB is a the largest
- 28:01Speaker 2: North American conference for broadcasting. It's the who's who broadcasting goes.
- 28:07Speaker 2: You meet with vendors and all this stuff. So I just
- 28:10Speaker 2: wanted to kind of touch base on what I thought
- 28:12Speaker 2: was pretty cool what I saw out of the news
- 28:14Speaker 2: stuff that came out the big ones and sometimes they
- 28:18Speaker 2: get released spoiled before anyb which is a little bit
- 28:20Speaker 2: of a bummer.
- 28:21Speaker 1: But for our listeners who don't know, National Eneby is
- 28:25Speaker 1: National Associational Broadcasters. This is technology that we're going to
- 28:29Speaker 1: see in broadcasting via radio, television, YouTube.
- 28:37Speaker 2: Yeah, it's it's not just it's not just television and
- 28:39Speaker 2: radio anymore. It's content. It's I mean last year, so
- 28:44Speaker 2: just to segue a quick bit, last year, I met
- 28:48Speaker 2: the content like the lead content guy for Dude, perfect right. So,
- 28:56Speaker 2: I mean these are people that are doing content creation
- 28:58Speaker 2: at the largest scales for or the biggest platforms. So
- 29:02Speaker 2: not just television, it's the Internet, it's everything. So but
- 29:05Speaker 2: the cameras, we're talking about cameras first, like cameras that
- 29:08Speaker 2: actually turned heads like big time, the go pro mission.
- 29:13Speaker 1: Yeah, that looks it's.
- 29:15Speaker 2: It's an eight K, fifty megapixel, one inch censor. It's ridiculous.
- 29:19Speaker 2: They're making a huge, huge play for the cinema, like
- 29:22Speaker 2: the like the low form factor cinema market. I mean,
- 29:26Speaker 2: it's just gonna be cool. It's in cinema. It's just
- 29:28Speaker 2: gonna be cool. You're gonna get some cool stuff. I
- 29:31Speaker 2: just don't know.
- 29:32Speaker 1: Apple keeps, you know, kind of and we see this
- 29:35Speaker 1: a lot filmmakers saying I'm shooting my movie on an iPhone,
- 29:39Speaker 1: you know, because the optics pretty much is everything good.
- 29:42Speaker 1: Do you think that's what kind of GoPro wants to
- 29:44Speaker 1: get a piece of.
- 29:46Speaker 2: I think they just want to get into just better
- 29:49Speaker 2: looking stuff. I mean getting getting being being a platform
- 29:56Speaker 2: that cinema cinematographers can use to get those shots at
- 30:00Speaker 2: that cost level where if you put it into a
- 30:03Speaker 2: scenario where it's going to get destroyed, you don't care. Yeah,
- 30:06Speaker 2: because you saw that a lot with the when you
- 30:09Speaker 2: went into DSLRs and mirrorless cameras when they first came out,
- 30:12Speaker 2: a lot of cinematographers were putting those cameras into dangerous
- 30:15Speaker 2: positions because if they broke a eight thousand dollars you know,
- 30:20Speaker 2: mirrorless camera, they weren't breaking a twenty eight thousand dollars
- 30:25Speaker 2: ari or you know whatever. So yeah, red or anything
- 30:29Speaker 2: like that too. So I think we'll see some really
- 30:32Speaker 2: great stuff coming out of GoPro. I just want to
- 30:35Speaker 2: know what it's time lasses look like, because that's what
- 30:38Speaker 2: I want to see. There's a new Sony PXWZ three hundred,
- 30:43Speaker 2: which is their broadcast camera, which turns some heads. Fujifilm
- 30:48Speaker 2: launched a large format cinema camera, So really yeah, wow.
- 30:53Speaker 2: And then some other high speed and spatial cameras of
- 30:57Speaker 2: at Cannon. But Canon didn't really have anything that I
- 31:01Speaker 2: saw or didn't read about. I mean, they had some
- 31:03Speaker 2: some lenses, they talked about some new lenses and stuff
- 31:06Speaker 2: like that, but nothing in terms of cinema cameras. Black
- 31:11Speaker 2: Magic has their Pixis camera that I think they announced it,
- 31:15Speaker 2: the sixteen K Pixis camera, which we'll talk about that
- 31:20Speaker 2: a little bit. Because black Magic has some lot of stuff,
- 31:23Speaker 2: a lot of AI of Adobe with some AI stuff
- 31:28Speaker 2: into into Premiere and a couple other things, more AWS
- 31:33Speaker 2: data driven stuff. ABS is huge for broadcast cloud production.
- 31:38Speaker 1: Now AW is Amazon Web Services.
- 31:41Speaker 2: Yeah, Amazon yeah, AMAS yeah yeah, and then cloud and
- 31:45Speaker 2: IP for broadcast. Right so twenty one ten is the
- 31:49Speaker 2: broadcast IP standard right now for broadcast. Were a twenty
- 31:54Speaker 2: one ten broadcast facility at NORDAIM and you're seeing more
- 31:59Speaker 2: and more compliance devices coming out, coming out, coming out.
- 32:02Speaker 2: They're not all friendly, they don't all play the same
- 32:05Speaker 2: the same way, they don't all shake hands nicely. So
- 32:07Speaker 2: it's just interesting to see what's coming out. Black Magic
- 32:12Speaker 2: Design really pushed hard into the one hundred gig twenty
- 32:16Speaker 2: one ten market this year.
- 32:19Speaker 1: What does that mean for them? Does that mean a
- 32:21Speaker 1: better maybe getting more? So?
- 32:24Speaker 2: Yeah, so one hundred gig right, so one hundred gig
- 32:26Speaker 2: ports will allow you to do four K, multiple four
- 32:31Speaker 2: K streams over one port. It's all over qsfps. Uh.
- 32:37Speaker 2: Just you just got to have something the does network.
- 32:40Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 32:40Speaker 2: Yeah, so black Magic is really pushing into this hundred
- 32:44Speaker 2: gig market for twenty one ten.
- 32:48Speaker 1: Black Magic also made that big announcement for the and
- 32:51Speaker 1: I have no if you've installed it yet. For iPhone users,
- 32:56Speaker 1: you can actually install a black Magic camera control and
- 33:01Speaker 1: have the quality you get from Blackmagic devices on your smartphone.
- 33:06Speaker 1: On your iPhone.
- 33:07Speaker 2: Yeah, it allows you the black Magic iOS camera app.
- 33:10Speaker 2: I believe it's free even.
- 33:12Speaker 1: To be free. Yeah, that's the other thing about it.
- 33:15Speaker 2: But it allows you to unlock some of the more
- 33:17Speaker 2: professional features. Allows you to shooting raw lows, you shooting
- 33:22Speaker 2: proras from your iPhone, allows you to do some manual
- 33:27Speaker 2: iris control, manual aperture control. I said the same thing twice.
- 33:31Speaker 2: Gives you a little bit more freedom in terms of
- 33:34Speaker 2: doing camera work on your phone. So and that pairs
- 33:37Speaker 2: well with when you're running DaVinci Resolved twenty one, so
- 33:41Speaker 2: I'm running twenty Yeah, so twenty one is the new one.
- 33:44Speaker 2: Some more real time collaboration, faster ingest and processing, and
- 33:49Speaker 2: some AI assistant editing tools. So the line between photo,
- 33:55Speaker 2: video and editing pipelines is slowly disappearing. It's all becomes
- 33:59Speaker 2: one platform, right, yeah, so does in Resolve you can
- 34:04Speaker 2: now do a bunch more than just video editing.
- 34:06Speaker 1: So the AI interfacing, I think is something that a
- 34:12Speaker 1: lot of creators look for. And you know, I know
- 34:15Speaker 1: we may have people that are listening to think, well,
- 34:17Speaker 1: how do I edit my video and all that, and
- 34:19Speaker 1: you know it's easy to say cap cut, you know,
- 34:22Speaker 1: just get an account cap cut. It's a good way
- 34:24Speaker 1: to do it. I used to love it on the
- 34:25Speaker 1: iPhone when I could cut with you know, iMovie. I
- 34:28Speaker 1: create videos and boom, have them up in seconds. And
- 34:31Speaker 1: I haven't used it for that, and I don't know
- 34:34Speaker 1: how powerful that is. But now people that have a
- 34:36Speaker 1: PC or whatnot, they can they can use the da Vinci.
- 34:41Speaker 1: There's a free version of da Vinci that they can
- 34:43Speaker 1: get and they'll find that that's a great stepping stone
- 34:47Speaker 1: if they move to other editing platforms like Adobe Premiere
- 34:51Speaker 1: or whatnot. You know, some people are happy with Da Vinci.
- 34:54Speaker 1: Premiere's doing some new stuff too. And I the other
- 34:57Speaker 1: day I needed I needed something. I'm like, I can't
- 34:59Speaker 1: go out shoot this, you know. With the account that
- 35:02Speaker 1: I have, I was able to grab stock you know, okay,
- 35:05Speaker 1: grab this and integrate it into the video. But I've
- 35:08Speaker 1: heard that Da Vinci is doing the same thing now.
- 35:11Speaker 2: Yeah, so black Magic has really pushed Da Vinci. It's
- 35:16Speaker 2: probably the top color grading platform out there right now.
- 35:21Speaker 2: So pick take your flavor of how you want to edit,
- 35:24Speaker 2: but you're going to color grade in Da Vinci. So
- 35:27Speaker 2: black Magic's are doing really good things. They kind of
- 35:30Speaker 2: have a not a great reputation on the brocast side
- 35:34Speaker 2: for some of their hardware, but they're getting up there.
- 35:36Speaker 2: They're getting better and and they're cheap, which is not
- 35:43Speaker 2: always good. Cheap and good don't always go are not
- 35:46Speaker 2: always synonymous.
- 35:49Speaker 1: So we'll be at the the ATM, the Aten Mini,
- 35:53Speaker 1: you know.
- 35:53Speaker 2: Yeah, so some of the more expensive hardware options are
- 35:58Speaker 2: really good. We have an a tem switcher at work.
- 36:01Speaker 2: I have the Attemp Mini here. We rely I rely
- 36:03Speaker 2: on black Magic year every day at work, right so,
- 36:07Speaker 2: and so does the majority of the broadcast world because
- 36:10Speaker 2: it just it it works, especially their base band stuff.
- 36:14Speaker 1: So yeah, it's it's some good stuff that uh. And
- 36:17Speaker 1: these announcements that NAB made a lot of people pretty happy.
- 36:21Speaker 1: I know that there's some new mixer boards for radio.
- 36:24Speaker 1: There's content creators, and that's what surprised me because I
- 36:27Speaker 1: always thought of ANAB and I've been once, but I've
- 36:30Speaker 1: always thought at a NEB it was all just hardware
- 36:34Speaker 1: for TV and radio.
- 36:36Speaker 2: Well that's what it was for the longest time.
- 36:38Speaker 1: Yeah, right, content creators that are benefiting.
- 36:40Speaker 2: Now because that's it was. It was for TV, radio,
- 36:43Speaker 2: and film, okay, and now it's for content. Doesn't matter
- 36:49Speaker 2: what platform you're on because in the world of way
- 36:53Speaker 2: content is now, if you're in radio, you're probably also
- 36:57Speaker 2: creating content for social media. If you're in TV, you're
- 37:01Speaker 2: creating content for the web, you're creating content for radio. Right.
- 37:04Speaker 2: It's like if you're on social media or if you're
- 37:06Speaker 2: doing content creation online, you're probably just doing all sorts
- 37:11Speaker 2: of content. Right. So it's like it's crazy.
- 37:14Speaker 1: I'm wondering, like, do you think we're going to see
- 37:17Speaker 1: with all the regulation now because let's face a lot
- 37:21Speaker 1: of TV stations will use a drone, and they may
- 37:25Speaker 1: have the older drones that are being used, you know,
- 37:29Speaker 1: whether it be that that big, gigantic DJI drone that
- 37:32Speaker 1: that is available, or you know, they use one of
- 37:35Speaker 1: the smaller ones or the older evada. Is there are
- 37:38Speaker 1: we going to see a US manufacturer, somebody in the
- 37:42Speaker 1: US that's actually making a drone for professional use or
- 37:45Speaker 1: is it just gonna be just too much money.
- 37:47Speaker 2: It's too much. It's gonna be too much money. It's
- 37:50Speaker 2: you can't compete with the Chinese electronics market.
- 37:55Speaker 1: Yeah, you can't.
- 37:56Speaker 2: Especially I'll go back to you twenty fourteen when GoPro
- 38:03Speaker 2: and three D Robotics should have partnered together and they
- 38:06Speaker 2: could have released a solid drone, but GoPro tried to
- 38:11Speaker 2: do their own thing and had a ton of internal
- 38:13Speaker 2: battery vailers because they tried to do it all on
- 38:15Speaker 2: their own with their own and then dj I just
- 38:19Speaker 2: swept up the pieces. And it's been Dji or nobody
- 38:23Speaker 2: really for.
- 38:26Speaker 1: Over a decade, and now dj I'm still making stuff.
- 38:29Speaker 1: Not to think you know, they're going away or it's
- 38:31Speaker 1: just like anti gravity, they're still making stuff.
- 38:34Speaker 2: But it's it's just the security posture right now. Right,
- 38:36Speaker 2: It's just it's just where does that data go. It's
- 38:40Speaker 2: all GPS tracking, right, it's all the content you're shooting,
- 38:44Speaker 2: that's some of it goes to the cloud. So of
- 38:47Speaker 2: course people are worried that if you're shooting it, your
- 38:50Speaker 2: GPS data is going to China, your videos are going
- 38:52Speaker 2: to China, your photos are going to China. Yeah, yeah,
- 38:57Speaker 2: that's what That's what the concern is, right, and then
- 38:59Speaker 2: what is China doing with that data and all this stuff?
- 39:01Speaker 1: So it's pretty amazing though when you see the quality
- 39:05Speaker 1: that you get with go pro mission. I've seen some
- 39:07Speaker 1: of the stuff and it's like, wow, that's pretty good.
- 39:10Speaker 2: Yeah, I really with the one inch sensor and the
- 39:13Speaker 2: fifty megapixel, right, I need to look do a little
- 39:17Speaker 2: bit more research on what the photo megapixel size is.
- 39:22Speaker 2: I want to see what the low light stuff looks
- 39:24Speaker 2: like the because I would love to do some long
- 39:27Speaker 2: nighttime exposure, some northern light stuff, some of the stuff
- 39:30Speaker 2: I've been doing with the GoPros I have now, which
- 39:34Speaker 2: are the Hero four right.
- 39:36Speaker 1: So surprises me though, is Sean and I don't know
- 39:40Speaker 1: how I knew we would see this effect on the
- 39:43Speaker 1: drone market, like people who wanted to get in drones.
- 39:46Speaker 1: But you know, I have found like somebody had posted
- 39:49Speaker 1: a video and I got to say it was breathtaking
- 39:51Speaker 1: where they put on a pair of roller skates and
- 39:55Speaker 1: they rolled through a restaurant and they were carrying like
- 39:58Speaker 1: the you know device that's basically got a kimbal It's
- 40:03Speaker 1: steady like the Osmo, right, and they would you know,
- 40:07Speaker 1: swish it by and it just got some great footage.
- 40:12Speaker 1: But even that is affected. It's not a drone. But
- 40:16Speaker 1: even you can't even get the Osmo pocket for it's
- 40:19Speaker 1: shipping but not in the US, and they have some
- 40:21Speaker 1: great features on that.
- 40:23Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, it's just the way the administration is
- 40:28Speaker 2: trying to handle technology coming into the US and it's
- 40:33Speaker 2: coming from China, and it's the whole security posture. Right,
- 40:36Speaker 2: it's like China bad.
- 40:38Speaker 1: All Right, We're gonna take another quick break. Come back.
- 40:41Speaker 1: We talk about the iPhone iOS update what that could
- 40:45Speaker 1: mean if you've been wanting to get car play in
- 40:47Speaker 1: your car with more of tech Talk Radio. I'm Andy Taylor.
- 40:50Speaker 2: I'm sean to word. Find us on Facebook at tech Talkers.
- 40:53Speaker 2: Will we were about now.
- 40:54Speaker 1: Back to tech Talk Radio. Last week, we talked about
- 40:59Speaker 1: some you know, some of the things about the changes
- 41:01Speaker 1: at Apple, and of course, you know, Tim Cook could
- 41:03Speaker 1: be stepping down. But in the meantime, we're hearing about
- 41:06Speaker 1: new features for iOS twenty six point four. If you
- 41:10Speaker 1: have an iPhone, there's gonna be something to update some
- 41:13Speaker 1: new things. One of the things that people have found
- 41:16Speaker 1: to be pretty cool is car Play. I don't have
- 41:18Speaker 1: CarPlay in my car. My car is a twenty eleven,
- 41:21Speaker 1: so it didn't have that available to it. You have
- 41:24Speaker 1: car Play and that that came with the car, right.
- 41:29Speaker 2: Yeah, So I have a twenty seventeen Chevy Colorado which
- 41:33Speaker 2: had Android Auto and car Play built in. So just
- 41:40Speaker 2: plug and play. Right, here's your phone, and it works
- 41:45Speaker 2: great with all most of the apps that you have,
- 41:48Speaker 2: ice stream music with Pandora, I use Google Maps, ways.
- 41:54Speaker 1: All available with a touch panel that's on your dashboard.
- 41:56Speaker 2: Yeah, and my you know twenty seventeen. The dashboard's not
- 42:01Speaker 2: completely all touchscreen. It's just mostly touchscreen. I use CarPlay
- 42:08Speaker 2: every single day, and it's not wireless. It's wired. So
- 42:12Speaker 2: I I have a USB port that I plug my
- 42:14Speaker 2: phone into and it allows me to make phone calls.
- 42:18Speaker 2: I see conceived text messages, that kind of thing. It's
- 42:21Speaker 2: been great. I think the only bummer. My only frustration
- 42:26Speaker 2: with CarPlay is that you have to have Syria enabled
- 42:31Speaker 2: to make it work, right, because it uses voice commands
- 42:35Speaker 2: to when it's plugged in, it disables. You can't search
- 42:37Speaker 2: your contacts, you can't like it makes you do it
- 42:40Speaker 2: by voice creat only, and you have to have Syria table,
- 42:43Speaker 2: which is dumb because I hate having Syria enabled on
- 42:46Speaker 2: my phone. I don't want to talk to my phone.
- 42:49Speaker 2: I want to talk to people on my phone. But
- 42:54Speaker 2: Andy brought this up earlier and I mentioned, oh, did
- 42:57Speaker 2: you know that because I have a GM product. GM
- 43:01Speaker 2: is going to eventually stop offering Apple car Play and
- 43:04Speaker 2: Android Auto on all of its gas powered cars.
- 43:07Speaker 1: So why would so somebody shopping for a car wants
- 43:11Speaker 1: to have all these features. They're not going to be
- 43:13Speaker 1: able to get that feature.
- 43:14Speaker 2: They're not gonna be able to get car Play wow,
- 43:17Speaker 2: or it's going to be an extra, or it's going
- 43:20Speaker 2: to be whatever GM comes up with. Right, It just
- 43:24Speaker 2: says that GM announced details about a new centralized computing
- 43:29Speaker 2: platform developed in house. This new electrical architecture will debut
- 43:33Speaker 2: on the twenty twenty eight Cadillac Escalade IQ and it
- 43:37Speaker 2: will eventually be used in all moderns models under GM's
- 43:41Speaker 2: vast portfolio.
- 43:43Speaker 1: So GM would offer an app, I would assume that
- 43:47Speaker 1: if you wanted special features that are part of GM,
- 43:50Speaker 1: you'd have to get the app, and then you would
- 43:52Speaker 1: then whatever access.
- 43:55Speaker 2: Or I imagine it's going to be some sort of
- 43:59Speaker 2: OnStar our subscription that you're gonna have to pay to
- 44:03Speaker 2: be part of. You know, if you want to stream music,
- 44:06Speaker 2: you gotta do pay this much money. If I wanna,
- 44:10Speaker 2: you know, stream or if you want to have your
- 44:13Speaker 2: contact and be big phone calls, you got or it's
- 44:15Speaker 2: gonna be its own entertainment system, but it's going to
- 44:20Speaker 2: take away the look and feel of Gable car Play
- 44:26Speaker 2: to use use Apple car Play now, well you have
- 44:28Speaker 2: your you have your Android now. But I love Apple
- 44:32Speaker 2: car Play. It's been great. I can't use it every
- 44:35Speaker 2: single day. It's it's convenient, it works. H I think
- 44:41Speaker 2: Another little weird thing is like when I'm just have
- 44:44Speaker 2: my radio on just the in the truck entertainment system,
- 44:49Speaker 2: I can see the temperature and the time.
- 44:52Speaker 1: That makes it good.
- 44:52Speaker 2: Yeah, when I'm in car play, I can see the
- 44:56Speaker 2: time and how much cell phone signal I have, but
- 44:59Speaker 2: not the time. So and even within the apps you
- 45:04Speaker 2: can't see it won't show you, like if the weather
- 45:06Speaker 2: apps up on your screen, it won't show you like
- 45:09Speaker 2: the temperature. Yeah, so it's like, oh, I want to
- 45:12Speaker 2: see what the temperature is. Well, it took over my
- 45:15Speaker 2: dash so now I can't see the temperature.
- 45:18Speaker 1: Right.
- 45:18Speaker 2: It's just one of those weird, little little little quirks.
- 45:20Speaker 2: But I mean I stream music off Pandora or Spotify.
- 45:26Speaker 2: If I'm taking a break and I want to watch Netflix,
- 45:29Speaker 2: I can just play it on my phone and the
- 45:31Speaker 2: audio will come through the car.
- 45:34Speaker 1: You know. The one thing that scares I will say
- 45:37Speaker 1: it scares me because you know, we like to have choice,
- 45:40Speaker 1: and you know that's one of the things we get
- 45:42Speaker 1: a MFM. You had to choice for a MFM. Then
- 45:45Speaker 1: CDs came along. Well, okay, you had a track and
- 45:49Speaker 1: like I said, I think so there's even some model
- 45:52Speaker 1: cars way back when that you actually had a record
- 45:55Speaker 1: player in the car, which not good for summers in Arizona,
- 45:59Speaker 1: but yeah, they little record player. It would come out.
- 46:01Speaker 1: You could play a record on it. HW that worked.
- 46:05Speaker 1: But you know, we had the choices, and then of
- 46:08Speaker 1: course MP three audio came out. That was that was
- 46:10Speaker 1: pretty good. And now you know my phone. My car
- 46:14Speaker 1: has Bluetooth so and it has a navigation system. However,
- 46:18Speaker 1: the navigation system has not been updated since well twenty eleven.
- 46:22Speaker 1: I bought it in twenty eighteen. It was used vehicle.
- 46:25Speaker 1: If I want to have updated maps, I have to
- 46:27Speaker 1: pay for that. And that's I think what we're going
- 46:30Speaker 1: to see is more subscription base. You want to update
- 46:32Speaker 1: the map, you want to update this, you want to
- 46:34Speaker 1: update that, Here's what it's going to cost you. But
- 46:37Speaker 1: there's been talk about them removing AM radio out of
- 46:40Speaker 1: some cars, because I.
- 46:42Speaker 2: Think that, yeah, I don't think that's actually going to happen.
- 46:46Speaker 2: I think some of it. I think Tesla did, yeah,
- 46:50Speaker 2: but I think they have because it interfered with certain
- 46:53Speaker 2: parts of the actual computing process of the car, right, right,
- 46:59Speaker 2: but coaching up back on your maps portion, right. I
- 47:03Speaker 2: still run a garment Nevie.
- 47:06Speaker 1: Oh there you go. Yeah.
- 47:07Speaker 2: When I travel, when I travel long distances, I rely
- 47:10Speaker 2: on Google Maps for all the inner city stuff. But
- 47:15Speaker 2: I got a garment movie when I graduated from college
- 47:20Speaker 2: in two thousand and eight. It spot it for me
- 47:23Speaker 2: as a graduation like a college like college graduation gift.
- 47:28Speaker 2: About four years ago, I bought the in Perpetuity Map Update.
- 47:34Speaker 1: Oh, I didn't know they did that. That's great.
- 47:36Speaker 2: So you can buy a lifetime map upgrade for your
- 47:41Speaker 2: garment devices. I don't know if it's on all the models,
- 47:44Speaker 2: but it was on mine, and I can take the
- 47:48Speaker 2: SD card out and get current maps, like I could
- 47:51Speaker 2: go get it right now and come in and download
- 47:53Speaker 2: the upmost up to date versus of maps and go
- 47:57Speaker 2: and plug it back in and have up to date,
- 48:01Speaker 2: which is great. And so I prefer relying on that
- 48:06Speaker 2: when I travel with the camper because a lot of
- 48:09Speaker 2: times where we go camping, you don't always have good
- 48:11Speaker 2: cell phone service. So I would prefer to have the
- 48:15Speaker 2: the address plugged in before we leave so that even
- 48:19Speaker 2: if we do lose cell phone service, I'm not trying
- 48:21Speaker 2: to hunt for the address or hunt for a map
- 48:24Speaker 2: while we're driving while we're in low cell phone coverage
- 48:29Speaker 2: and it's not going to find something or so the
- 48:31Speaker 2: but the GPS just gets GPS lock.
- 48:35Speaker 1: Well, since you have a g I'm kind of wondering
- 48:38Speaker 1: if you had a choice between Google maps or ways,
- 48:42Speaker 1: which is actually Google they are owned by Google now
- 48:46Speaker 1: or Apple Maps, so you have an iPhone which.
- 48:49Speaker 2: Apple Maps is garbage. That's just there's no there's no
- 48:52Speaker 2: shying around that question. It's been bad since it came out,
- 48:56Speaker 2: and it's not been good. And I think at one
- 48:58Speaker 2: point they even just said, you know what, we're just
- 49:00Speaker 2: gonna use Google information anyways.
- 49:02Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, the Armon's always been good for that respect.
- 49:05Speaker 2: Armon's always been fantastic. Yeah. Like I said, I have
- 49:08Speaker 2: a garment neuvie. It's still trugging along and it's been great.
- 49:14Speaker 1: Cartment cameras and I thought those were great.
- 49:17Speaker 2: Yeah, the garment, the garment and you know, Garman made
- 49:19Speaker 2: an action camera at one point.
- 49:20Speaker 1: Right, No, I did no idea.
- 49:22Speaker 2: The garment verb oh the verbal boy. Oh they made
- 49:26Speaker 2: an action cam. It was not that great and it
- 49:29Speaker 2: didn't last very long.
- 49:33Speaker 1: Well, there you go. All right, we'll tell you what.
- 49:34Speaker 1: We're gonna take another break. H We actually have a
- 49:37Speaker 1: listener question, so we're going to share that with you.
- 49:39Speaker 1: And this could be very helpful if you're archiving, so
- 49:43Speaker 1: we'll do that when we come back. I'm Andy Taylor, I'm.
- 49:45Speaker 2: Sean to weird send us an x at tech talk
- 49:48Speaker 2: radio or Verbreck and now.
- 49:51Speaker 1: Back to tech talk radio. So this past weekend it
- 49:54Speaker 1: was kind of fun. U a somebody that I had
- 49:57Speaker 1: been connected to on Facebook for a long time, no
- 50:00Speaker 1: that I do video, and they hired me to do
- 50:03Speaker 1: a secret video for somebody that has something coming up
- 50:08Speaker 1: a birthday big seven to zero. So We're doing interviews
- 50:11Speaker 1: with people in his life and I'm getting some on
- 50:15Speaker 1: Riverside FM. We're doing that for the ones that can't
- 50:18Speaker 1: be there. But actually went and shot, you know, two
- 50:21Speaker 1: cameras set up that whole bit and it was a blast.
- 50:24Speaker 1: And one of them said, I have photos, you know,
- 50:28Speaker 1: I what can I do? You know with these? Can
- 50:30Speaker 1: you put these in? I said sure? So I took
- 50:33Speaker 1: the photos and I scanned them. I don't have the
- 50:37Speaker 1: six to eighty like you have. I had to send
- 50:39Speaker 1: that back to EPSOM, but I'm gonna buy one eventually.
- 50:42Speaker 1: So I have the flatbed EPSOM scanner. I had put
- 50:45Speaker 1: it on there. I had to scan it. I did
- 50:47Speaker 1: it in the photoshop, waited and did that whole bit.
- 50:50Speaker 1: The thing is, as I got the photos and the
- 50:53Speaker 1: photo quality it was from this like eighties nineties they
- 50:57Speaker 1: were pretty pretty well. I thought, you know what, let's
- 50:59Speaker 1: go ahead and just let's go ahead and Gemini them.
- 51:02Speaker 1: So I went ahead and went through and I have
- 51:05Speaker 1: the originals and then I at six hundred DEPI and
- 51:08Speaker 1: then I went ahead and popped him into Gemini and
- 51:11Speaker 1: had it. And it did such a great job. The
- 51:14Speaker 1: Gemini that we saw from a year ago versus what
- 51:17Speaker 1: we get now. It doesn't overdo it, it doesn't give
- 51:21Speaker 1: it that uncanny.
- 51:22Speaker 2: Isn't it wild? How how far it's common a year?
- 51:26Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 51:27Speaker 2: In one we're like, oh, here's ai slop. Yeah, and
- 51:30Speaker 2: then like Christmas came around, like oh, actually these Christmas
- 51:33Speaker 2: pursons weren't that bad this year?
- 51:34Speaker 1: Yeah, So now what's this year of going to look like?
- 51:37Speaker 1: So it's pretty cool. But we got this question in
- 51:39Speaker 1: from from actually Sean in Tucson, not you, Sean different.
- 51:44Speaker 1: Sean says, I just recently found your show and caught
- 51:46Speaker 1: one of the episodes where you were talking about scanning,
- 51:50Speaker 1: digitizing video and film. You have more experience with the
- 51:53Speaker 1: film stuff. My question is what about cassettes. I have
- 51:57Speaker 1: a big old box of them, but no cassette player.
- 52:00Speaker 1: Uh should I send them somewhere, or can you recommend
- 52:02Speaker 1: a process legacy box. Legacy Box doesn't yep, yeah.
- 52:07Speaker 2: That's I would, that's I mean, that's just gonna be
- 52:09Speaker 2: the easiest, even if you go yep, yeah, all right.
- 52:12Speaker 2: I just looked it up. They do tapes, DVDs, cassettes,
- 52:16Speaker 2: all the digital, so I actually did. I actually captured
- 52:20Speaker 2: probably about thirty or forty cassette tapes. Also. Oh wow,
- 52:24Speaker 2: in this process, mostly music cassettes.
- 52:27Speaker 1: How was a quality when you it was good?
- 52:29Speaker 2: So I used to Morant's multi channel cassette deck and
- 52:32Speaker 2: I came out phono into my computer and just recorded
- 52:36Speaker 2: it into audacity.
- 52:38Speaker 1: Oh very cool.
- 52:39Speaker 2: Yeah, play pre record record right, and just let it
- 52:43Speaker 2: play and listen, listen to it. And but I had
- 52:46Speaker 2: also captured, right, because I also had some like here
- 52:49Speaker 2: was my in law's wedding captured the audio captured from
- 52:51Speaker 2: my in law's wedding on cassette cassettes. My grandfather had
- 52:54Speaker 2: recorded cassettes that I had recorded off the radio because
- 52:58Speaker 2: I wanted to play specific meat, you know, because that's
- 53:01Speaker 2: what we did as kids. Right. You called the radio station,
- 53:05Speaker 2: Hey can you play this song? Play record?
- 53:08Speaker 1: Oh my god, the thing is when you want to
- 53:10Speaker 1: do it on your own, like you're talking the morants
- 53:13Speaker 1: and doing that, it is great. The problem is it's
- 53:15Speaker 1: real time. Yep, it's where scanning like with the six' eighty.
- 53:20Speaker 1: It's super fast. Even film transfers now can be made
- 53:24Speaker 1: faster than having to watch the film. Video cassettes are not.
- 53:28Speaker 1: That's real time, but cassettes are also going to be
- 53:31Speaker 1: real time. I will say there is one I looked
- 53:33Speaker 1: at Sean. It's called KLIM and it's a portable cassette
- 53:37Speaker 1: deck kl I am if you want to look this
- 53:40Speaker 1: one up. But it has an SD card in it.
- 53:43Speaker 1: So when you go to hit play on the cassette
- 53:48Speaker 1: and you hit record on the SD card, basically you
- 53:52Speaker 1: hit a button there it will record. It will record
- 53:55Speaker 1: that right onto the SD card. So if you have
- 53:58Speaker 1: an SD reader you know, or you can buy one.
- 54:01Speaker 1: I think it actually comes with a USB stick. You
- 54:04Speaker 1: could pop that SD card into it and then you
- 54:07Speaker 1: could transfer it to your computer.
- 54:09Speaker 2: So yeah, that's relatively inexpensive, right, it's only forty bucks.
- 54:12Speaker 1: Yeah, at forty dollars in The qualities pretty good on them,
- 54:16Speaker 1: and it all depends on the quality of the cassette.
- 54:19Speaker 1: But if you're going to use an old cassette player
- 54:21Speaker 1: for Sean and Tucson, the thing is remember that, you know,
- 54:24Speaker 1: those heads get worn over time and it may not
- 54:27Speaker 1: give you the best audio. And that's what Legacy could do,
- 54:31Speaker 1: or device like this from kale i Am.
- 54:33Speaker 2: Yeah, Legacy will probably clean it. I mean, Legacy is
- 54:36Speaker 2: not inexpensive, right, But if it's serious audio that you
- 54:40Speaker 2: want to preserve at the highest fidelity, pay the money
- 54:44Speaker 2: to do it. If it's something you just want to
- 54:45Speaker 2: capture just because it's fun for you, it's something you
- 54:48Speaker 2: recorded two decades ago, three decades ago, whatever. This kale
- 54:52Speaker 2: i Am thing looks pretty awesome for forty bucks.
- 54:54Speaker 1: All right, Well, that's it for this week's Tech Talk Radio.
- 54:57Speaker 1: Hopefully Justin will be back with us next week the
- 54:59Speaker 1: main time. I hope you have a great week. If

- 55:07Speaker 1: dot com. Any big plans for the week, just other
- 55:10Speaker 1: than avoiding.
