So I was thinking back to the first time we met. Are we gonna are you starting now? Yes, we've already started. I thought we were James Jude Courtney: Well there you have. Mane AF Podcast: just damping. Well, we're going. We're just talking. I thought you were gonna like welcome him to the show. We did. We did. See, you know, never you they say never work with kids or animals. Never work with your wife. That's that's so true. It's that's good advice, James. Because you will make her you will make her insane. You're not married James Jude Courtney: Sarah and I aren't married yet, so I Mane AF Podcast: yet, so you guys can still do it? Is that what you're saying? James Jude Courtney: I I yeah, we can yeah, I think we could maybe get away with it. I don't know. Mane AF Podcast: There you go. But you guys have been together for so long, you might as well say you're married, right? James Jude Courtney: Yeah, I mean we're in gaze. It's just we haven't we haven't just felt the impetus to to we kind of feel like that was the that was the commitment, you know? And we both have a lot of integrity. Hmm? Mane AF Podcast: Yeah. We bought a house. We bought a house. That was the that was the thing. He had proposed to me and he still owes me another proposal. But that's another story. We bought a house and I was like, Well, that's that's it. That's the binding legal agreement. We were like wi with this house. James Jude Courtney: Yeah. Yeah. I I actually gave her a but Mane AF Podcast: We were like with this house I the wed. So James Jude Courtney: Yeah. Well dude, when you tie up your money like that? I mean, will you tie up your fortunes and that's Mane AF Podcast: Yeah. James Jude Courtney: a lot to unwind, dude. You know? I have watched Mane AF Podcast: Yeah, exactly. James Jude Courtney: her friends go through divorces and costed it's I've never been married, so I've saved myself, I reckon about three million dollars so far. You know, it's at least. I mean, you know, but it's but I knew Mane AF Podcast: Whoa yeah. Yeah. I've James Jude Courtney: in fourth grade, dude, that I would be I knew I'd be in movies. I somehow figured out reincarnation. I don't know where the fuck that came from and You go into a Catholic school and and I knew that it'd be an older man with a younger woman to have kids later in life. Go figure. Mane AF Podcast: Well, you got it all figured out. That James Jude Courtney: In fourth grade. Mane AF Podcast: in fourth grade, yeah. And you're you're living it now. You got this, James Jude Courtney: Yeah. Mane AF Podcast: you got our show figured out. It's midlife marriage in mayhem. So there we go. James Jude Courtney: Ha ha Mane AF Podcast: Welcome to Mane AF. James Jude Courtney: Yeah. Mane AF Podcast: Craziness. So yeah, James Jude Courtney: Yeah. Mane AF Podcast: I was I was thinking back to the first time we met. Do you remember when we were? I'm pretty sure it was at a convention. I think it was the fortieth, wasn't it? James Jude Courtney: I don't remember it was the first time I remember the first time we went out together. Mane AF Podcast: Right, right, right. Yeah. That was that was good times. What James Jude Courtney: Yes. Mane AF Podcast: that that was in Los Angeles, right? At the the Pasadena one, wasn't it? Or or was that or or am I remembering out of order wrongly and out of order, as my wife points out often. James Jude Courtney: Well, I I I think after the thirty third concussion I gave up on memory as well. You know, I mean I I all Mane AF Podcast: Yeah. James Jude Courtney: I remember is bourbon tasting, so somehow I want to say Kentucky. But what do I know? Mane AF Podcast: Yeah, yeah, that could be. I mean these all blend in James Jude Courtney: Or maybe I don't yeah, they they they do. I mean they do. I mean they're beautiful experiences, but they do. They all they all blend in. And you meet you meet you if you're meeting five hundred, seven hundred people, you know, trying to remember everything that where you've been and what you're doing and it it's it's a lot. It's a lot. I have to ask Mane AF Podcast: It is. James Jude Courtney: Sarah where I am, what I'm doing, where I've been, who I know. Mane AF Podcast: I get I I get that all the time. Renee goes, Where are you going this weekend? Wherever the plane ticket takes me, you know. And this James Jude Courtney: Right? There's a car to pick me up, I'm good. Mane AF Podcast: I remember we were at the I think it was the 40th, too. We were sitting in the bar, and that's when you started talking to me about James Jude Courtney: That's the first time we met. Mane AF Podcast: But I remember I think I think that's the first time that we really kind of bonded and started talking about our war injuries and war wounds and and all of that. And you were telling me about some of the stuff that you were taking to help you Like supplements. Supplements that you were James Jude Courtney: Mm. Mane AF Podcast: taking to get through and stuff. And I got those and and they've been helping me. James Jude Courtney: dude, I you know, I'm I mean, I just, you know, so I just I'm 69, I'll be 70 in January. And I you know, just went to my doc. I had to do a complete, complete workup with, you know, and EKGs and everything because I was going down to a clinic in South Africa to do eyebogain. So I had to be like, and he looked at me, literally he looked at the blood work and goes, dude, every time I look at your blood work, you're getting younger. Who the fuck does that? But it's the supplements, it's the acupuncture, it's the positive thinking. You know, I mean and trading hard, you know. Mane AF Podcast: Yeah. Yeah, exactly. Okay, so tell me what supplements you're taking. I'm sure everybody's gonna wanna know because if they can go in at sixty nine and reverse aging backwards. That is what we're talking about on this one. So what what what what do you do? James Jude Courtney: wow. Mane AF Podcast: What is your regiment for working out and then your regiment for what you're taking? Supplements. James Jude Courtney: Well, supplements-wise, I'm I'm taking Chinese herbs, which my brother, my youngest brother, who's fifty-nine, he's fifty-nine and he's still an ultra marathoner. He still runs fifty, seventy-five, hundred mile marathons. he's an acupuncturist, treats a lot of athletes, of course. he p he gives me these Chinese herbs that I can't tell you, you know, what they are. But then I do simple things, like I do creatine, and that is, you know, it's it's great for your brain, it's great for your muscles. I and then I a list of things like you know Astaxanthin and Axazanth and gosh, I do standard process protocols. So standard process is all whole sourced vitamin minerals, a lot of glandulars like protomorphogens. So like they found at the nucleus of the cells of cows and and pigs, the glands, the protomorphogenic protomorphogens are identical to human protamorphogens. So if you take a cow liver protomorphogen or a cow testicle protomorphogen, it's going to build that organ or gland or system. So I take a lot of those and and standard process has some really, really powerful and then you used to only be able to get them from doctors. Now you can get them online. So I I believe so. But if not, you can you can get them through a doctor and get on a portal and be able to get them. But I change my protocols. I I change based on what I feel I need, what my brother looks at, and know so i'm not taking the same thing always you know Mane AF Podcast: Right, yeah. So it's changing as you're aging. James Jude Courtney: absolutely and and i do use peptides you know peptides are amazing amaz Mane AF Podcast: w What peptides are you taking? James Jude Courtney: well i went through two cycles of bpc one five seven kp v and tb five hundred which are great for inflammation all you know your entire body inflammation contraindicated with cancer, contraindicated with you know various things. So you have to know what you're doing. epitalon is one I just did the second cycle of 20 years of studies in Russia and it's proven to extend your telomeres. Your telomeres being the caplets at the at the end of your DNA, Mane AF Podcast: Yeah. James Jude Courtney: the longer the telomeres, the longer you live, the healthier you are. So epitalon is one that I've used. they so it's it's really it's important to do the research. But peptides are n are man, they're the thing for a reason. But it's really, really important to get them from a trusted source that they're made in America because the ones made in China have heavy metals, they have toxins, you know, so it's really important to to source them from somewhere where where you're trusted and you know that they're third party tested. Mane AF Podcast: Yeah. Yeah, and a lot safer. Yeah. Have you have you ever James Jude Courtney: Yes, yeah, one hundred percent. Mane AF Podcast: done now my question is, have you ever done any test at all? Have you have you stepped into that line or cause I have and it's it James Jude Courtney: You know, I I how d how'd it work for you? Mane AF Podcast: it w it was working great. And then I got this stupid breast cancer, so I've had to back off. But now I've gotten the go ahead that I can start going back on it. But like I was 354 test and I was at a 30 free test and I just felt like crap. So I wanted to get up to the higher levels. And I was up to not in in the 900s and I had the free test up to like 170 something or 125 something, and I was feeling great. And then when this happened, I had to. step back and back off of that because it's all an estrogen-driven cancer that I had. And James Jude Courtney: Right. Mane AF Podcast: what we learned is that testosterone can be changed into estrogen in the body. Yeah. James Jude Courtney: Right. Mane AF Podcast: So, so I've been I'm so I'm on blockers, estrogen blockers, and all that. And so I've lost my feminine side, but it's all good. James Jude Courtney: Well thank God you have such a beautiful feminine partner. So you you you're you you you're covered there, pal. Yeah. Mane AF Podcast: I'm good. I'm good. James Jude Courtney: Well you know what I've I've I've looked into it. Mine's still in the seven hundreds, and but I use so many herbs and and you know I supplement so much. but I've done the research, my brother has done the research basically with me, and and I discovered is using microdoses of testosterone. With microdoses of HCG, human chorianic anatotropin, right? So Mane AF Podcast: Mm-hmm. Yep. James Jude Courtney: microdoses of HCG will stimulate the LADIC cells to produce testosterone, so that even if you're doing microdoses of testosterone, you won't kill the latig cells. You won't send the message to the body that we have enough testosterone, which is what happens with TRT. So microdoses of both of those will actually give you the same benefit without so this is something I know I'll move on to at some point. know, but right now I'm solid, but right now I'm taking the you know a handful of supplements every day, you know, morning with meals before I go to bed. and again those change. But you know, I'm using things like tongue cut ali and tribulus and and then you know my brother has me on he's a fertility expert. So for Mane AF Podcast: Yeah. James Jude Courtney: instance he discovered as a an acupuncturist when people do in vitro fertilization IVF is 80% more successful if you're doing acupuncture at the same time. So what he does is his patients, both the man and the woman, he builds up the guy's testosterone, he he builds up his sperm count, he builds up the p sperm strength, and then he works with a woman on her, you know, lutinizing hormone and all these other kinds of things. So by the time they do the the implant and they do the fertilization, they're just ready to go. And then he does acupuncture right at the moment when they when they do the IBF. So I've been using those supplements, which is keeping my, you know, my estradiol is low, my testosterone is high. but you know, there's gonna come a point where I'm going to have to use, you know, I imagine, or maybe not. But it's good to know, you know. Mane AF Podcast: Yeah, I mean if yeah, if you're at if you're at seven hundred at at sixty nine, shoot, man, you're doing great. But okay, James Jude Courtney: Yeah, it didn't. Mane AF Podcast: so what's your workout program? Has your workouts changed over the years as you've aged, or are you just still going strong like a bull? James Jude Courtney: You know, it's it's funny. I when I did the Conan show, the live show at Universal Studios, right? The Universal Studio Tour. So Mane AF Podcast: Yeah. James Jude Courtney: it was a wonderful show. And one of the guys and anyway tr these guys, I mean these guys were saucing like crazy, man. These rides were like two hundred and eighty pounds, four percent body fat, you know, like some of these, but I you know, I I I I that wasn't I wasn't playing a character that needed to be a big. I didn't want to be big anyhow because I wanted to do regular acting roles and stunt roles. So one of the guys, Ev Carrion, Vietnam veteran, he was Mr. America over fifty, completely natural. And I went training with him one, you one time and he looks the other guys were all training and he goes, You guys are nuts training this heavy. Like you're gonna kill your joints, you're gonna kill it, you know, like boom, boom, boom. What he would do is lay down on the bench, put a 45 pound plate on either side, do his warm-ups, get 20 or 25 out of it, and then in his mind, he put on another plate and another plate and another plate. And by the end, he was struggling just to get one up. And and the guy had a the body of an Adonna. So it took me a while to catch on to that. I still do the same workout that a strength my strength coach at South Carolina gave me back in the late 70s, which is two body parts a day, you know, three days on, one or two days off, you know, very simple. But what I do is I do I do much lighter sets and and I And and I always, when I can, I end with a sauna, which stimulates muscle growth, stimulates but and I read this two different two different studies. I take an ice pack and I put it under my package. Because when you go into the sauna, you're gonna kill testosterone, right? But if you put an ice Mane AF Podcast: Yeah. Yep. James Jude Courtney: pack under, you know, between your legs while you're in the sauna, you're gonna come out with more testosterone than you walked in with. So Mane AF Podcast: really? Wow. James Jude Courtney: That's one of my little secrets as well, man. The other guy, you the other guy sitting on the saddle, what is that ice pack? But dude, I'm t you know, I freeze my nuts every day. You know, it's like Yeah, yeah, right? Mane AF Podcast: There you go. James Jude Courtney: Yeah. So I get the benefits of both. Mane AF Podcast: Mix the James Jude Courtney: It's Mane AF Podcast: Yeah, yeah, because I all the time I go into the hot we we've got a hot tub. We built this, I built this house, so it was built for recovery. So I've got the steam shower, I've got the the hot James Jude Courtney: nice. Mane AF Podcast: tub, I've got the sauna, I've got the the gym here. But she's when we were doing IVF, she was like, Put some ice on your balls, g keep them going. Yeah, I what were you saying, James? James Jude Courtney: Well you know Go ahead, please. No. but no good 'cause you're gonna continue on with that. I was gonna segue. Mane AF Podcast: I was just gonna say he didn't listen to a lot of the things I said. But James Jude Courtney: You know Mane AF Podcast: I was also extremely stressing at the time we were doing that. Like in hindsight, looking back, I had this super full-time day job. Tyler was here in Atlanta trying to get this house ready. I was in California. I was not taking, I was just going a million miles an hour. I was so stressed all the time. There's so many reasons why that didn't happen. But at the end of the day I it all worked out for the best. So James Jude Courtney: Yeah, isn't that crazy how that that's something we learned about stress? I but you know, I I wanted to mention that so I had a simple bilateral mastectomy in high school. I went from being one of the smallest kids in sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth grade, tenth grade, I shot up. I grew like seven inches. I had a huge test dump. I had I I had gynecomastia and it was bad. It hurt. It hurt really, really bad. Now If I'd have known what my brother knows, if I know what I know now that, you know, how to how to how to fix that, how to balance it out, I would have done it. But the doctors did surgery, so I don't have breast tissue. I mean, and it's and and I remember back when I started working as an actor, one of my really, really good friends, who's Candle Reeves personal trainer, and she's like, You know, you know, James, you should really just get that fixed. I mean, it's it kind of doesn't look that great. And I was like, Fuck it, man. If someone doesn't like me because of my scars, you know, whatever. I'm I'm good. And and Mane AF Podcast: Yeah. James Jude Courtney: I am actually had not much, but a couple of fans and they t saw pictures of me in the makeup chair at you know in one of the Halloween films, like, What's up with those tents, man? What's up with those you know? But it's like, I don't give a fuck. It's like it's you know, it's my scar, Mane AF Podcast: Yeah. James Jude Courtney: man. I earned it. Mane AF Podcast: I had that I had that when I was younger my whole li you know, I had the bigger chest, firmer chest. And, you know, going through school I was picked on and stuff, and I it kind of turned me into who I am now, you know. It it hardens you to the bullshit that people will say and and do and stuff like that. And now I'm just like, obviously I'm okay with it to announce that I had male breast cancer. So Yeah. James Jude Courtney: Yeah, yeah. Yeah, and c you know, good for you, man, because people need to know, we need to destigmatize, right? I mean, I look at you Mane AF Podcast: Exactly. James Jude Courtney: know, when I was a little kid, you know, in sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth grade, by seventh grade I was so tired of getting picked on, you know, I started martial arts and and I'm not Mane AF Podcast: Same. James Jude Courtney: saying I'm any kind of amazing martial artist, but I can handle myself, right? And because of that, I was able to make a living doing what we do. If I didn't have those s fighting skills, I might not have been able to make the living that I've been able to make having the fun that we get to have, doing what we do. So I should go back and buy Mane AF Podcast: Yeah, exactly. James Jude Courtney: those assholes dinner. I'm not going to, but I should. Mane AF Podcast: There you go. Yeah, I mean, that's James Jude Courtney: You know. Mane AF Podcast: this that's the same with me. I I started the martial arts and and did all of that and and then transitioned into pro wrestling and from there into the acting. Because I when I was growing up, a tall, skinny kid, glasses, braces, slightly dyslexic, I was like, what am I gonna do for life? I sure as hell I'm gonna James Jude Courtney: Yes. Mane AF Podcast: go get a college degree, you know? So went into the pro wrestling and then followed the dream. And and then it's kind of crazy how We both had this these huge careers in Hollywood. And then we both get our I I guess you'd call it not really a breakout role, would you call it that, Renee? But I got the Michael Myers when I was like in in my forties. And you got it in your sixties, James Jude Courtney: My sixties. Mane AF Podcast: right? Yeah. And James, that's really interesting to me too, because if you would When you were in Los Angeles for years, and correct me if I'm wrong, but you moved back to South Carolina. and what year did you were you were in South Carolina, right? James Jude Courtney: I I moved back the year before so I moved back twenty seventeen and Halloween was shot twenty eighteen. And I'd Mane AF Podcast: Did you know Halloween was gonna be shooting in South Carolina? James Jude Courtney: yeah, yeah. I I knew, but I had made the decision at that point. It's kind of crazy. actually there's there's a backstory to this. Like I went and saw I knew a guy from the gym who I really liked. He was really funny, really cool guy. This is back in the in the in the early eighties. His training partners were Frank Zane and Sylvester Stallone. And, you know, and and so Brian was a buddy of mine. I didn't know what he did. And then a friend of mine, a really good friend of mine, had an a a an astrological reading. And I I look we I listened to it. We sat and had a bottle of wine and I was like, my God, how does somebody know you like this? And so I I Mane AF Podcast: Wow. James Jude Courtney: called, made an appointment. I walk in and I see this guy, Brian. I'm like, holy you, you. So the th I can still remember so many things he told me. And one of them was, is like, well, he he's like, you're either a director, an actor, a singer. you could be a CEO, but Mane AF Podcast: Yeah. James Jude Courtney: that would bore you, you know. So he like na he nailed so many things about my life and about me. And I'm like, how do you Mane AF Podcast: Really? James Jude Courtney: And one of the things he said was, he goes, Yeah, you're really not gonna make it to your life. nah, it's gonna be early sixties. And I remember going, dude, you have no idea who I am. I've been on a daytime Mane AF Podcast: Ha ha. James Jude Courtney: soap, a nighttime soap, you know, I'm I'm doing commercials, I'm making some good money, you know. And he goes, nah, nah. And so my it was my I was my early sixties, and I a bunch of stuff had like pr projects I had ready to go in California falling through. I went, you know, man, I'm just gonna go back to back to South Carolina. I've missed so much. My my nephews have been on state and national, you know, wrestling, soccer, rugby, like I miss so much. I have six brothers. I have a boatload Mane AF Podcast: wow. James Jude Courtney: of nieces and nephews, right? And so I went, Mane AF Podcast: Yeah. James Jude Courtney: no, I'm gonna go be back. I'm gonna go back and write. I'm gonna focus on producing and directing. The only way I work from this point forward is if someone calls me. And so I knew Halloween was shooting here, but Yeah, I I wasn't gonna chase anything. I was like, I am not chasing a frickin' thing the rest of my life. I am gonna work on getting my films made. I'll make them myself out of my own pocket if I have to. So then all of a sudden I get a call from you know, Ron Hutchinson, who's the coordinator on 2018. And he says, Hey Jimmy, we're making we're making he's he's Malka Cod's guy. So he only coordinated the first one. Other coordinators did the second or third one. But he Mane AF Podcast: Yeah. Yep. James Jude Courtney: he said, Yeah, we're making Halloween and I said, great, man, good for you. And he goes, Well, he goes, David Gordon Green said, whoever plays this character, I called David and said, whoever plays this character has to have really deep acting chops, also has to be a really good stunt man. And David said, Okay, yeah, you're absolutely right. And he has to be six foot three, 200 pounds, he's got to be in his 60s. Who do you know? And Ron knew me, but he didn't really remember me. It was Chris Chris Nielsen, one of the best car guys in town, a stunt guy out in California, right? Who's now living Mane AF Podcast: Yeah. James Jude Courtney: in Alabama. Chris and Jennifer told Ron, it's like, no, Jimmy Courtney, what are nuts? And so they called me thinking I was in Los Angeles, but I'm here in South Carolina. And so I drove down to Charleston and they put me on tape. And it, you know, I I study with Stella Adler, my Lembrando's coach. I study with a coach of the World Academy. I, you know, I've had I've got the I've got the chops acting wise and I do what I do stunt wise. And I walked out and got my old pickup truck. You gotta have a pickup truck, you live in the south, son. You know, got my old pickup truck. Mane AF Podcast: Got to. You gotta. James Jude Courtney: I I wasn't even out of the parking lot and I got a call from Blumhouse and they're like, Hey, can you are are you available? And I'm like, Yeah, yeah, sure. And you know this, man. Putting on putting someone on a veil, that's a kiss of death. You ain't gonna get it. So I went home, went Mane AF Podcast: Yeah. James Jude Courtney: and I started driving home before I even got to the freaking freeway. They called me again and said, David wants to see you, can you come back? And when David, when I met David and Ryan Turek and, you know, the whole the whole panel, and Malik, they sent everybody else home. They just called the agents and said, Now we got our guys. So It was so meant to be. Mane AF Podcast: Nice. Yeah, exactly. Everything the one thing that I've found out in this business is everything happens for a reason. And sometimes it takes a while to find out what that reason is, but everything happens for a reason. Now, here, let me ask you this question. How do you think you would have been able to handle it if you would have had if you would have got this role, say, when you first went to California? You think you would have been able able to handle it the same with all the the fame and stuff that comes after it? 'Cause I I know for me, if I would have got this early on in my career, I would have been thinking I'm such a damn big shot and it would have been like, forget about it, you know what I mean? James Jude Courtney: I you know, I think I think it's a very astute observation, Tyler. I first of all, I didn't know myself yet. I didn't have a voice yet. I was still learning who I was. So that's a lot. And I and I look sometimes Mane AF Podcast: Yeah. James Jude Courtney: I marvel at guys like Matt Damon, you know, who at such a young age get so much fame and power and they they their shit is so tight. They're good family men, they never say the wrong thing, they don't act out in public. And And I don't know that I you're right. I I don't know that I would have been that guy. I also have to say I didn't have the depth to go to the dark places that I went to, you know. And David Gordon Green told Mane AF Podcast: Yeah. Yeah. James Jude Courtney: me in twenty eighteen, he said that he'd only worked with one other actor who could go as deep and dark, and that guy ended up in a psych ward for two months. You know, he he had a psychotic break. So, Mane AF Podcast: Wow. James Jude Courtney: you know, but I for 15 years I volunteered for family constellation therapy, helping people who were just horribly stricken with PTSD and we're we're were immobile, immobilized by their trauma. and in that family constellation, you you actually embody ancestors, spirit, whatever. All it's it's a beautiful Bert Hellinger, a Jesuit priest who's also a Jungian psychologist, a PhD, studied the Zulu in South Africa. And amongst all the peoples in the world, they do not carry forth familial pathology, abuses of, you know, emotional, sexual, alcohol, drugs, divorce. They don't do that. At at the core of their society. People who practice the the you know, the the Zulu. Mane AF Podcast: Right. James Jude Courtney: and so I for almost fifteen years volunteered. So I was constantly downloading ancestors and downloading Dark Forces, also Archangel Michael. So when I played that character, I surrounded myself every day in every scene. with the blue ring protection from Archangel Michael, and then I would breathe the darkness in and let it take me. And then I would breathe it back out again. So when I went home at night to the hotel, I was me. Just all those things put together. You know what I mean? You're right. The exact Mane AF Podcast: Yeah. Yeah. James Jude Courtney: right place at the right time. Mane AF Podcast: Yeah. And and people can't people don't realize just how deep you have to go playing a Michael Myers because to get that stuff looking the way you need it to look on film, like some of the some of the kill scenes you do, you do it say seven to ten times or maybe even more from different angles and to get get it right. And you have to have that head mindset and it that's tough, right? That's tough. James Jude Courtney: Well, you know, y you know, the chiropractors they do apply kinesiology, you know, muscle testing, press on your Mane AF Podcast: Uh-huh. James Jude Courtney: arm. Well, applied kinesiology, you can muscle test whether somebody's telling the truth. So the innate intelligence of your body knows if somebody's lying to you. That's why people say, my god, I knew that I knew that somebody was lying, right? Well, Mane AF Podcast: Yeah. James Jude Courtney: the audience knows if you're lying. And Jimmy Caggy said to be a good actor, you've got to stand on two feet and tell the truth. So if we had blood tests and brain scans and heart scans of what was going on in our bodies when we're doing those kills, it would be the exact same thing that's going on in a murderer's body when he's killing somebody. There is no difference. We just have this, Mane AF Podcast: Yeah. Yeah. James Jude Courtney: we have the training and the sanity to be able to compartmentalize it, which is why Jack Nicholson told Heath Ledger, don't play that role, dude. Don't play that role. You're not ready for it. You know, Jack was. You know? Mane AF Podcast: Yeah. Yeah. Yep. Yeah. I I at the end of a day, man, I'd have to go home and have a couple of glasses of wine and a cigar to unwind and you know, and and Renee wouldn't even come near me for the first half hour or so. Right? Go well, James Jude Courtney: Yeah. Mane AF Podcast: yeah. I mean he and and it's a physical role, right? So it's both mentally and physically brutal to to do that over and over again. All day. I mean it was a it was a grueling shoot, a lot of fun. It was right. It was a wonderful, wonderfully close kind of family knit group, but definitely a grueling shoot. How was yours? James Jude Courtney: my God, I I those three movies I ended up with one concussion, two hematomas, bruised ribs, got some cuts that should have been stitched, but I just kinda glued them together. And I don't I mean, I'm old school. I'm sure Tyler, you're the same way. I don't go I don't go to the nurse. I don't go to the medic man, you know. And I had that, you know, you Mane AF Podcast: Right. Yep. No. You don't you don't want to admit you got hurt 'cause then they'll you know James Jude Courtney: No, me Mane AF Podcast: you they'll don't take me out, coach. I got this. You know what I mean? It's yeah. James Jude Courtney: Yeah. So I met Sarah in London when I did the first London Film and Comic Con and we our first date was three weeks long and then she came over to visit me when I was shooting Halloween or before I was shooting Halloween Kills, but she was supposed to leave, but she didn't. So she stayed. And then so but she was always back in Video Village. She was always a hundred yards away. She was never ever like right close to me when they applied the mask. But the one time it was getting Towards dawn and the house is burning, and I'm standing next to her. We're talking about what we're gonna have for breakfast. And then all of a sudden they're We gotta go, we gotta go, we gotta Chris Nelson runs over with the mask. They start applying the mask, and all of a sudden it that that's that changes me. All of a sudden I become the character. Mane AF Podcast: Yeah. James Jude Courtney: And she said that freaked her the fuck out. Like she was just like, my God, this is not the man I was just talking to. Like it's Mane AF Podcast: Yeah. James Jude Courtney: it's There's this little editor up there, the little guy on the controls that makes the body move and remembers the blocking and you know, which I take pride in, dude. I'm really Mane AF Podcast: Exactly. James Jude Courtney: good at blocking. But other than that, it wasn't me, pal. Mane AF Podcast: Yeah, and then it's just go time, you know? You put that mask on. James Jude Courtney: Yeah. And you yeah, yeah. Mane AF Podcast: People people don't understand. Like I I get I get asked this all the time at conventions. Like, what is it like to wear the mask and and hold the knife? Like when when do you start feeling like Michael Myers? When did when did you really start feeling like Michael Myers? And I got a fly flying around me here. James Jude Courtney: Yeah well you know it's kind it's kinda it's was really kinda cool. So we had that really long tracking shot in in Halloween twenty eighteen and and we were rehearsing it prior the night prior and we were everybody was convinced we were gonna have to stitch it together with CGI. we ended up nailing it. But so we were waiting for Chris Nelson to show up with the mask. we I hadn't put the real mask on yet or anything. So he walks in at about 11 30 at night into this house. We all go back to a back room, Malik and David Gordon Green and Ron and Simmons, the cinematographer, who's freaking brilliant. and we all stand back there, and Chris places me in the light where he likes me, and then he puts the mask on, and there was a collective guttural ugh, like and it felt Mane AF Podcast: Yeah. James Jude Courtney: like an eight million amp connection, just like boom, inside my body. And I just went. It just it just it just it was so magical. It was so powerful and Mane AF Podcast: There is something truly ritualistic about the moment the mask is brought out or as I would watch with Tyler because it was always the very last thing. And then there's the the ritual of putting it on and then and then, you know, like he said, go time. But I think everybody on set can can kind of feel it. It's visceral. Well, and too, they James Jude Courtney: my. Mane AF Podcast: wanna keep it they wanna keep it covered up because there's so many fans watching because You know, that's that's gets into my next question is I never really realized how big this franchise was. You know, the first time I did it, I was like, holy crap, you know, you're you're filming, we were filming on in Pasadena and then we were filming in Conyers for the second one. The people were lined up just trying to get a glimpse of what was going on and it was insane, man. Just s they they They tried to keep the mask under wraps and then put it on, you know. It's i it it was kind of crazy because it's like they're gonna see it as you're walking out there anyhow, you know? But I'm sure you guys had James Jude Courtney: Yeah, I I Mane AF Podcast: that too. James Jude Courtney: they had a they when we were when we were shooting that first the the that long tracking shot and this is where being an athlete really paid off. Stewie played college, I think he played college soccer or lacrosse, I can't remember, but he was the steady cam operator. And the marks we had to hit couldn't be marked because y he was using a steady cam, right? And Mane AF Podcast: You'd see Yeah, yeah, yeah. James Jude Courtney: And we would get direction, like, okay, Jimmy, when you get off the stairs, I need you to be one inch over, and I need you to hit right here. And then Stewie, I need you to do so. We had a bunch of stuff flying. But on the eighth take, we frickin' nailed it. And and and you know, David came running across, give me a big bear hug. Well, he gave my waist a bear hug, you know, and and you know, hey, Mane AF Podcast: Yeah. James Jude Courtney: we nailed it, we nailed it. But there was an extra who took a picture of me in the costume and he posted it, Nick Castle, back is the shape. Do they had that motherfucker? excuse my language, they had that dude. Okay. Okay. They had that Mane AF Podcast: Yeah, no, we we s we can swear on here. I say fuck all the time. James Jude Courtney: okay. They had that dude on a plane early next morning back to New York or wherever he was from, man. He was booted off the set. And they told him unequivocally, dude, if you post that, I mean if you you pull it down and if we hear from you again, we're gonna sue. And because everybody signed NDAs, you know. But I and I get it. Mane AF Podcast: Yeah, exactly. But but I mean that's yeah, I get it too. You you want to keep it under wraps because you don't want to throw it out there because as soon as you do, it's exposed. And and and then then you gotta either keep the hype going or try to bury it and then bring it back. And that's tough. That's tough. I James Jude Courtney: Yeah. Mane AF Podcast: do have a question for both of you because Tyler's were in 2007. Yours were in 2017. So a 10 year gap between the the time the films came out. Right? Twenty twenty eighteen. Twenty eighteen, eleven years. James Jude Courtney: Got tw eighteen, eleven years, yeah. Yeah. Mane AF Podcast: the difference in the internet in that time is exponential, cute. Yeah. And when Tyler was doing his Halloween in 2007, the internet had already was already going. And it was an interesting process for him because when he did something like X-Men, where there were big expectations around a character, there was chatter. But it wasn't what it was when he started prepping for Halloween and the prejudgments of, you know, who he was, what he looked like, why this was gonna be the worst ever, why this was gonna fail. but then flash forward to yours in twenty seventeen, and now we have all the social media going full bore. what was that like for you? Do you pay any attention to it or do you just ignore it and And carry on as if it doesn't exist. James Jude Courtney: I you know, as far as the the fan base and stuff went, I hired somebody right away to handle social media for me. And I because I just I just knew I I just was not going to spend the time. But I'll tell you this, Tyler, and tell me what you feel. I I was I felt prepared to meet the fan base. I was not prepared for the amount of love that I was going to receive. I mean, the just Mane AF Podcast: Yeah. James Jude Courtney: the fan adulation and love. And how'd you feel? Mane AF Podcast: Yeah, exactly the same. It it's just crazy just how the fans gravitate to this character and just love him. And and the thing is, there's so many different versions of Michael, too, you know? And you get to compare the different ones and and people are going, I like the OG. And I go, hell yeah, I love the OG too. I mean, Nick Castle's James Jude Courtney: Yeah. Mane AF Podcast: the man. I mean, come on, you know? And but there's a there's a Place for all of us. And it is like a brotherhood, you know? James Jude Courtney: my God, what a fraternity, right? Mane AF Podcast: It being a part of this is just so fantastic. And and everybody gets along, and it's just so amazing. And tell me if you would agree. Like at the 40th and the 45th, there were so many different Michaels. I'm like, Who's this guy? You know, and he played Michael James Jude Courtney: Yeah. Mane AF Podcast: in s a certain different version or something. And I was like, Wow. I didn't even know, you know. Yeah. James Jude Courtney: Or did you know one major stunt, you know, like well gosh, I mean I you know, look at I the had one stunt, I was doubled on one thing in twenty eighteen, that was the stairfall. And when they we they did a test and they and we shot a beautiful, beautiful ending. And David Gordon Green said it's one of his top, if not top, you know, most cinematic moments he's ever shot. Well, it didn't test well. So we went back and created the fire thing, you know, the basement with the fire and all that stuff. Well, Mane AF Podcast: Yep. James Jude Courtney: Ron was not invited back, and so they brought a new coordinator in. And Tom didn't know me, fair enough, and didn't know my work. And he's like, I'm not putting you in that fire. And I'm like, yes, you are. And he goes, no, no, I'm responsible for your safety. And I said, Well, here's the deal, dude. It's my show. So I'm I'm Going in the fire. And then Chris Nelson, and I said, and if I have to, I'll I think Tom and I ended up being getting along wonderfully. He's wonderful guy. so I said, if I have to, I'll go to producers and you we'll settle it. And but Chris Nelson came up and said, No one puts that mask on but him. His face, that it's melt it's molded to my face. Anybody else Mane AF Podcast: Yep. James Jude Courtney: puts it on, it's gonna be distended and distorted. So, you know, we shot that ending and and it's what the fans loved, and it brought us Halloween kills, which was beautiful. And You know, because they didn't know what they were gonna shoot for kills. They didn't have the script. So they Mane AF Podcast: Wow. Yeah. James Jude Courtney: took a three picture deal without knowing what the second and third acts were gonna be. You know? They just they just shot Mane AF Podcast: Yeah. Yeah. James Jude Courtney: and and and I and I love that about filmmaking, man. You just don't know. You may you may think you know, but you don't know. Mane AF Podcast: No, you just g you could go in any kind of different direction. So you did the fire gag. That's the one thing. I draw the line at fire and falling off of buildings. And Ron Hutchinson was our stunt coordinator also. And his daughter, what's his daughter's name? James Jude Courtney: shoot, why you would ask me that. She was on she was a Buffy because I worked with her Mane AF Podcast: Is it is it Michelle? James Jude Courtney: on Buffy. yeah. Yeah, I can't remember. Mane AF Podcast: I c I think it's I'm gonna say I'm gonna say Michelle. But James Jude Courtney: Yeah, Michelle, I think you're right. Mane AF Podcast: that was the only one stunt that I didn't do was the falling off the f first off the balcony and I guess the guy landed on her and sent her to the hospital. So I I probably should have done that because it was going into cardboard boxes. I would have known to turn instead James Jude Courtney: you know what? Well here's the thing is Mane AF Podcast: of landing on her. James Jude Courtney: those are the two things I really love. when I did Conan I did over three thousand high falls. twenty twenty foot fall into a flaming pit. But I've done falls off houses and buildings and stuff and and Mane AF Podcast: Yeah, well, you're crazy. Let me let me ask you this, James, because has has as you've proven yourself time and again, over the years, do you feel like there are things that you don't have to prove anymore? are there things that you're like, yeah, I've done that. It's a risk I wouldn't take again, or are you kind of like, Yeah, bring it. James Jude Courtney: Well, that actually happened in twenty eighteen. they they asked me, Ron was like, you know, stairfalls are kind of nasty. I've done them. And he's like, you know, we got a guy here, Cody, and I was like, give it to Cody, man. Let him make his let him make his day. I got nothing to prove on that, buddy. And stairfalls hurt. They freaking hurt, Mane AF Podcast: Right. James Jude Courtney: you know? And I'm like, no, no. And then on on Halloween Kills, I was doubled on one thing. Well, two things happened actually. Doug Doug Tate was brought in as my double and it was kind of a favorite of Chris Nelson. And you know, and and he always wanted to play the character. And so just doubling, he he Mane AF Podcast: Yes. James Jude Courtney: comes in, he goes, hey man, you know, I don't want to steal your thunder. I won't take credit for it, but you know, I'm really happy to be here. And so so David wanted to see the big rubber bricks in a in a in a pillowcase. And, you know The actor, the actress is gonna is supposed to hit me in the head or hit me in the head. But of course, we know that, you know, you gotta go hard to the body, but face shots, you gotta be away. It doesn't, it doesn't play if you hit, but Mane AF Podcast: Right. James Jude Courtney: you snap your head and it looks, you know, it looks it looks like amazing. You just got the shit kicked out of you, right? So we tried to explain that to David, and he goes, No, no, no, I want to see the bag hit. So so Aaron and I went off, the stunt coordinator Aaron and I went off and and and We tested it and he took a swing and he clipped just the top of my head. And my sparring partner in college, I was a I was a buck eighty, I was a light heavy. Abby, my good friend, who I trained the whole time until Chris Atopoulis jumped in, was a trainer on the seventy-six Olympic team. but Abby and I were sparring partners, he was a two hundred and eighty-five pound super heavyweight. Joe Fraser picked him up out of college. So my point is, I know what a big punch feels like, you know what I mean? And I can take, Mane AF Podcast: Wow. Right. James Jude Courtney: you know? He clipped me with that thing and I was and he immediately went, dude, you are not taking this hit. You are not taking this hit. And I went, you know what? You're right. And so So they called Doug Mane AF Podcast: Hand that one to the young buck. James Jude Courtney: Tate out and Doug comes walking out all sheep. man, I'm you're sorry. I just, you know, I'm I'm I'm like, no, bro, go ahead. Have a good time. She knocked him up. She Mane AF Podcast: Knock yourself out James Jude Courtney: knocked him outside the head and I watched his knees buckle. The dude was he was he was struggling to stay up. They they didn't use it. Mane AF Podcast: Wow. James Jude Courtney: They couldn't, they couldn't use it because and also they discovered when they were shooting the fight scene leading up, he just doesn't move like me. And there's Mane AF Podcast: Right. James Jude Courtney: you know, the it we I mean, you move so specifically, I move so specifically, you can't double that. You just can't. And Mane AF Podcast: Yes, we do. Right. James Jude Courtney: then they had and then they said, Okay, we we had we want to maybe double you off jumping off the top of the SUV. So in rehearsal, I did it just to show the motherfuckers I could. But then I went, you know what? This is not worth a sprained ankle or sprained knee. And sure enough, Doug did one tape and he sprayed his frickin' ankle. So, you Mane AF Podcast: Wow. James Jude Courtney: know, I was grateful to have him there to double me on that because, you know, I and and then on Halloween ends, Aaron Armstrong, who had coordinated the kills, doubled me on ends because he and I have done well one of the what what really influences my movement is I did a combination of Aikido and Kali. And in Aikido, your feet never leave the ground. Everything is very, you know, so it's like I have a gyroscope two inches, you my Tantian, two inches Mane AF Podcast: Yeah. James Jude Courtney: of my my navel. So that really informed the way I moved. Well, Aaron had spent like 30 years doing a lot of kung fu and Winshun, but he'd also done Aikido. So he he was in our bodies were informed. So he I think they looked at over 200 people to get the flashback scene in Halloween ends. And When they saw Aaron moving with me, they're like, wait a minute, you can do it. So he did the flashback, and then they realized what he can double me at at a at a at a range. He's he's got thicker legs, Mane AF Podcast: Yeah. James Jude Courtney: he's you know, we're built slightly differently. But at a long range, he knew how to move like me. So he did a lot of the tunnel stuff because I'd be in makeup for five hours sometimes, because I'd be without the mask. Mane AF Podcast: Wow, yeah. James Jude Courtney: Yeah. So as you know, but But at this point in the game, and it's funny you ask that because I've been thinking about this is, you know, I've got some films lined up, they're physical. I'm gonna give more and more to a double, but I'm going to find a double who looks like I do, who's built like I am, who can move like I do, and and let him make a good living doing it, you know? Mane AF Podcast: Exactly. Yeah. Sometimes you just gotta hand that torch to the young bucks and let them go and find their way, right? We've done it. We've been there, done that. James Jude Courtney: Dude. Dude, I I Yeah, man. Well, there's all the compressed discs and the, you know, the and the the knee Mane AF Podcast: Yeah. James Jude Courtney: surgeries and the hand surgeries and the you know, I mean, no, I I I I got nothing to prove. I I think of that sometimes when I'm riding my motorcycle because I still s I still ride like an 18 year old, you know, and and and sometimes I'm like, dude, you gotta lay this down. But then the other hand no, I'm that I'm not ready for that yet. But I am ready to Mane AF Podcast: Well you gotta ha yeah, you gotta have fun, man. You gotta you gotta enjoy life. 'Cause if you're not enjoying life, what the heck? Right? James Jude Courtney: Yeah, one hundred percent. And I I've got a sidecar for one of my motorcycles and for an old Royal Enfield and it's like in military green. Looks like something out of the forties. And dude, my dog loves it. He loves getting in that sidecar. Mane AF Podcast: you you take your dog? That is so cool. James Jude Courtney: yeah, man. And it's like and and and people in cars, it's like they take pictures and they they roll down their windows like, my God, you made my day. It's the most beautiful thing. You made me so happy. And Sarah, when I put the sidecar on, she got behind me. I had her follow me in the sidecar, put him in it. I just want to make sure it was tracking straight, right? She Mane AF Podcast: Yeah, yeah, yeah. James Jude Courtney: then she pulls up next to me at a stop sign. She goes, my God, if you didn't have a girlfriend, you would get so laid with that dog in that sidecar. Mane AF Podcast: Okay, now now you just you just created two more questions. Here we go. First of all, what kind of dog do you have? And then the second is, what kind of motorcyclist do you have? James Jude Courtney: Okay, Cyrus is a pit boxer chow bird dog mix. So he's he's got a boxer jaw, he's got a pit head, he's got the pit musculature, he's got Mane AF Podcast: He's a good looker, yeah. James Jude Courtney: a chow neck, big thick neck, with eight eight tons of skin, you know, that you can't, Mane AF Podcast: Yeah. James Jude Courtney: and he's he's super sweet, but man, I've seen him jump into action to protect Sarah, like when we were in Savannah shooting ends. A couple of nefarious Mane AF Podcast: Yeah. James Jude Courtney: cause I was walking behind on the phone and a couple of guys kind of approached her man. He was all about like, nah, nah nah nah, this is my girl, you know. Mane AF Podcast: Yeah, exactly. That's that's great when they protect like that. Yeah. James Jude Courtney: man, yeah. I I feel great. And he she gets so upset that he barks at everybody that goes by the house. I'm not upset at all, man. Everybody walks by this house Mane AF Podcast: No, you wanna keep it the Yeah. Stay the hell away. He's he's that's his territory. He's taken care. That's like our guys. Now, where did where did you get him? Is he James Jude Courtney: He was this is kind of this kind of interesting. So he th my friend Kimberly, who I was helping through a really, really dark time, she was descending into mental illness and and addiction and and she's heart of gold and she walked into a fight club at one point and stole the blue nose pit. And I mean a girl was partially insane and partially she had balls of steel and Mane AF Podcast: Ha ha. James Jude Courtney: and she rescued a couple of cats and you know and and I I had her I was helping her out. Point, my brother and I owned like 19 condos or whatever, and and I let her live in one. I was actually paying the rent to our company. And and also she calls me and she goes, and I had met Cyrus. A little girl knocked on her door and found the puppy in the woods. And and her mama said, We can't afford to feed it, but she said you'd feed it. And so it was four weeks old then. And so a week later, five weeks old, she calls me screaming and crying, like, my god, he's Vomiting, he's pooping, I don't know what to do. So I picked him up and I called the vet. He said, take him to the ER right away. So I took him to the ER. it was during COVID. So we had to wait outside. Nurse comes out with a little mask on. She goes, I'm so sorry to tell you this, but he's got parvo, minimum $3,500, Mane AF Podcast: no. James Jude Courtney: and we can't guarantee he's gonna live. And I went, fuck it, let's do it. So one week later, and $5,000 later, we go to pick him up. And they said, okay, he has to be quarantined from her other dog for a month. So we we get him and Sarah is, you know, mothering him and he's the sweetest little guy, but he's still sick. And so, and he's so tiny. I mean, his his neck was only this big. And so I call my friend Kay, she's a psychic, you know, she's a cool it's a really cool lady. She's in in New Orleans and she's really good. But we're just talking. And I just said, you know, hey, you know, so this, you Cyrus, this dog, and Was it Kimberly's karma to save him or something? She goes, no, no, no. He was your war dog in a past life. And dude, immediately I had this image of myself as a Native American with a wolf next to me. And he Mane AF Podcast: Wow. James Jude Courtney: she literally, like two seconds later, says, You're a Native American. He was a wolf. He's your dog. He's here for you. And I that's just the way it's been, man. It's crazy. Mane AF Podcast: That's amazing. I love that. Now I want to know what biscuit was in your previous life, Tyler, because I feel like she was your crazy ex girlfriend. James Jude Courtney: Ha ha ha Mane AF Podcast: I think she was. That is so crazy. James Jude Courtney: Ha ha Mane AF Podcast: yeah. We got it this I can't allow her to go to a damn shelter anymore. She always comes home with another animal. But it's but it's good because they need a, you know, they need a home too, and you saved that one. We've saved some. That's I mean James Jude Courtney: Yeah. Mane AF Podcast: That just shows you James Jude Courtney: We have Mane AF Podcast: got a kind heart. James Jude Courtney: man, I mean we have two cats that we that we rescued, but Parcival, my cat that I modeled a lot of my my motion, my my movement and and from Michael Myers for the shape was my cat Parcival who I met him at my apartment in Los Angeles and everybody said he was twelve years old. It was it was I was going to I had traveled for five years. Then I went back to Los Angeles. I subl led a place in the on the Venice Canals and it was great, but that was up. So I had to find another place. And Ron Hutchinson was going to give up his apartment in West Hollywood that he had for thirty five years. So it was rent control. Should have cost about three thousand or thirty five hundred bucks, but it was only five hundred bucks. I went, hmm, I'll take it. Yeah. I don't know where I'm gonna go. I don't know what I'm gonna do. So when I get there, Parceval, everybody said he's twelve years old, said you can't touch him, but he'll hang out. Dude, within a month he's hanging out with me. Within three months, he's sleeping with me. And like he was, you sleeping on my bed. And but he was amazing. He was an amazing hunter. An amazing hunter. I just sit on the porch. And then one day I'm sitting on the porch with the porch with him. It's up, you know, like with stairs going down, the stairs going down. I'm sitting Mane AF Podcast: Yeah. James Jude Courtney: next to him. All of a sudden he perks up. Four raccoons come up the up the driveway and he hauls ass down. They see him and they're like and haul ass away. I'm like, shit. I fell in love with this guy. Now this is gonna be a vet bill. comes back around the corner from the fence, chasing the biggest one, swiping at his ass. And and when around the back of the house, then it comes trotting up. It's like just purring. And I went, dude, wow, you're a bad ass. And so Mane AF Podcast: Yeah. James Jude Courtney: I ended up traveling with him. And he he was with me when I made all the movies and and he died when he was 24 years old. And Mane AF Podcast: Wow. James Jude Courtney: and Aldous Huxley said, if you want to be a writer, get a cat. And of course, Ernest Hemingway was known for his cats. So Mane AF Podcast: Yes. James Jude Courtney: Sarah, like shortly after Parsville died, she said, you know, I feel like because she was gonna start writing her graphic novel, and she said, You know, I I feel like we need a cat. And so we went to a rescue place and found these two. And you know, man, I I I love cats. I love cats. I you know that yeah. They sleep on top, you know. Mane AF Podcast: Yeah. There I mean unconditional love. Unconditional love. Renee gives me shit a lot of the times. My dogs don't. My cat doesn't. It's so great. James Jude Courtney: Yeah, yeah. How many how many animals you guys have? Mane AF Podcast: I better watch it. I'm I'm within swatting distance here. We quiet. We have three dogs and two cats. James Jude Courtney: Nice nice. Mane AF Podcast: It's it's a it's a full zoo. We got a menagerie. We call it a menagerie. Yeah. Okay, so now So the motorcycles. We didn't talk about the motorcycles. Say. James Jude Courtney: Okay, I've got 2014 Triumph Bonneville T100, which is an exact replica of a 67 T100. So it has a flat seat, it rides like an old bike, only better. It has mock-ups of carburetors. I've had a guy with a with a 63 T TS 65 pull up next to me and go, hey, is that a TS100? no, man, it's 2014. Yeah, shoot, man, it looked real. So I I love that bike. It's my street bike, you know, it's it's as fast as. any Mane AF Podcast: Yeah. James Jude Courtney: ninja, but it's it's a great street bike. And then I've got a a custom S Harley. it was a buddy of mine who was he had a it's a beautiful, beautiful bike and he was sinking into addiction and and I'd given him so much money. And then finally I was like, dude, you gotta sign your bike over to me. And I was hoping that this because that was his pride and joy. And I was hoping the dude would just like go, you know man, I I I I want to be able to ride my bike. And so But it didn't. He died of alcoholism. And you know, so I've got that. I'm gonna Mane AF Podcast: sorry. James Jude Courtney: keep the artwork on the bike as artwork. And I'm going to rebuild the bike into I'm gonna mock it up. you know, an old knucklehead or something. I don't know what I'm gonna do with it. then I've got I bought the Royal Enfield because I want Sarah wanted to ride, so I bought a Royal Enfield custom 500 for her, and I went, Well, what why don't why don't I just get one and put a sidecar on it from Cyrus? And so Sarah's been Sarah's been learning to ride and and we got sidecar for Cyrus, which he loves. And so, you know, I and then I've got Mane AF Podcast: Does Sara does Sara ever ride behind? James Jude Courtney: in in the on in the bike, on the bike, my bike? Mane AF Podcast: On any of them? Yeah. James Jude Courtney: yeah, she I mean she she rides with me on the Triumph. she's ridden in the sidecar, but she's not she's not so big on that. And but I think she's getting to the place where she's Mane AF Podcast: Yeah. James Jude Courtney: feeling comfortable to ride on the street. You know, we we we have an enclosed neighborhood, so she rides here. She hasn't gone out on the on the on the main roads yet. Mane AF Podcast: Yeah. Yeah. Renee Renee's ridden with me like a couple times. No, no. Once. James. I'm gonna tell you the story. Tyler says he wants to get a bike and that he thinks that it will be really fun for us because then we were still in Los Angeles. He said, you know, I'll get a seat, I'll put the seat on the back, and then we can go it'll be like we can go on dates and we can, you know, tool around and you can just sit on the back. And I said, that'll be great. He bought the bike, bought the seat to put on it. That seat never went on the bike. He never had any intention of taking me with him. Well, now it's my turn to correct you because you did ride on the back of my bike when Branscombe That was not your bike. Well, it wasn't my bike, but I was ri I was driving the riding the bike. You were and it was and it was It was for a film. See, here we're here we're doing our bickering now and James is just like, You guys just go at it. Go at it, guys. This is a technicality. Yep. James Jude Courtney: Yeah, yeah. Mane AF Podcast: Technicality, you were sort of right. I did ride on the back of a bike. It was not your bike. But I will say, James, I much prefer riding by myself. I don't like giving up control in something that vulnerable, having somebody that somebody said to me once, like if the minute you stop being scared of being on a motorcycle or, you know, aware of the danger, that's the minute that you need to get off of it. And It makes me nervous to have somebody else driving. So she went down to the the California Highway Patrol and and did the motorcycle course. And got her motorcycle license and now she doesn't ride. Well, I don't have a bike. well. I got a br I got a birthday coming up. Yeah. So James Jude Courtney: Yeah, well, is that is that a hint? It's like Christmas is coming up, pal. Yeah, there you go. I I think, you know, I I I I think a woman riding a bike is sexy. I think it's really it's great. And and when you ride, if you're an athlete and you are, you both are, right? You get the feeling, you know when someone's gonna change lanes. You're so aware of everything around you. Like I don't lose that awareness, you know. Mane AF Podcast: I also have a funny theory that I feel like we need to get the the the roller ranks back up again because James, I am such a better driver from spending every Saturday at the roller rink because you got little kids jumping in and out. You got, you know, the people who are zipping in and out doing the racing, and you have to always have this three sixty head on a swivel awareness of who's coming up fast, who's gonna cut you off. And I think I'm a better driver for it. I I use that on the freeway all the time, especially here in Atlanta because they drive like crazy. So you transferred the roller rink to the roadways. Great, great. I stand by my roller rink theory. James Jude Courtney: That makes honestly, Tyler, that makes sense. It it you know, it makes such sense. You know, Mane AF Podcast: It you know it kinda does. That kind of does. James Jude Courtney: it's it's amazing. South Carolina, according to certain statistics, have the fourth worst drivers in the this the the union. And I'm living I I have to be I have to be very careful about my dad, my dad raced cars. I have six younger brothers. My dad was a race car driver until one of his partners died in a race and and then my mom was like, Yeah, you gotta give this stuff up. So But he taught us all to drive by the time we started out in minibikes and go-karts, by the time we were thirteen, we were driving full vehicles and full five you know, birth dirt bikes. And Mane AF Podcast: Yeah. James Jude Courtney: my dad's thing was in life and especially in vehicles, the only way to stay out of trouble is to stay away from trouble. So what I do is accelerate, get in between all the traffic, and I and I park there. And if they catch up to me, I I weave through and I get ahead again, you know? I Mane AF Podcast: Yep. James Jude Courtney: mean It's but it's it's about awareness. I can sense when someone's gonna change lanes. I'm always aware of who who might turn left. I mean, I'm prepared to leap off the bike if I have to or lay it down if I have to. I still can't wrap my mind around wearing a frickin' helmet, but you know, maybe someday. You know. I mean I'll carry one in case it means. Mane AF Podcast: You gotta keep those you gotta keep those brains safe. You don't need another concussion. You're on what, thirteen now? Come on, man. James Jude Courtney: Yeah, I d yeah, I don't know. I don't I don't I forget how many. But you know what, honestly, dude, I I d some some of these supplements I've done, you know, for my brain and and and doing the ibogaine, man. And the research in Ibogaine. Mane AF Podcast: tell us about that. Because you said you were going to South Africa. Was that? James Jude Courtney: Yeah, yeah. Mane AF Podcast: Tell us about Ibogain. I don't know anything about it. James Jude Courtney: Ibogaine is a plant medicine used by the Buiti tribe in in Africa, and now it's become widely studied and widely used. I went down to a clinic in South Africa, but there are clinics in Costa Rica and Mexico. this woman got her PhD in transpersonal psychology at Oxford and she did her doctoral dissertation on ibogaine. So this this was a a a place where it you know, th I I wanted to make sure that I went to a place that was really, really solid. Was referred by a a friend in Taiwan who's who's very worldly and knowledgeable. Ibogaine is a plant medicine. There's two ways you can do it. The popular way is a flood dose. It's a 24 hour flood dose. not for the faint of heart at all. But you can walk in addicted to heroin or methamphetamine or cocaine, walk out the other side and you're but and you're you have released yourself from the addiction. Now you might have to go through a sh short couple day titration process or whatever. the big thing is post-traumatic stress. there's a beautiful, beautiful movie called Of War and Waves, and it's about a it's about a Navy SEAL who's just just trashed it from PTSD and other military guys who just can't function outside of that monofocus, you know, being in the shit. So It will it will cure trauma. I mean, it just snaps you out of the trauma. And then of course you've got work to Mane AF Podcast: Wow. James Jude Courtney: do afterwards. So I went down, C, but here's the thing, CEOs are using it, athletes are using it because it gives you a mental edge. What it does is it creates new neural pathways. So it it it will reverse the damage that you've you know we have done with these concussions or excess of alcohol or drugs or whatever. So it reboots your brain and resets your nervous system. Your entire nervous system gets a reset. Mane AF Podcast: Yeah. James Jude Courtney: So I did a two-week protocol where I would be doing it, I would be dosing in the morning and afternoon, but I'm mesodosing, I'm not flood dosing. So I actually accrued probably three times the amount you would do in a 24-hour dose. And then we did programming exercises, like, you know, that were based on how to reprogram the mind, how to reprogram, you know, are the reality we create. The theory being, and I'm finding it's true, is the medicine will keep working inside you for months. And so things you're working on that you want to get better at or that you want to g gain perception of or increase your ability with or heal, the plant medicine will help you do that in in the process. So and I'm I'm Mane AF Podcast: Wow. So James Jude Courtney: and it works. It's working. Mane AF Podcast: So is it i is it kinda like a hallucinogenic feeling when you're taking that or what is it? Is it like ayahuasca? Are you mesodosing something like that or is does this not have that kind of a hallucinic quality? James Jude Courtney: So I've done I've done ayahuasca. I went down and did three weeks of preparation in Peru where I did all kinds of cleansing rituals with a little shamanista and I had a guide who spoke Quechua and I spoke Spanish and then I went to meet my ayahuasquero, full on three dimensional, powerful twelve hour journey. It was beautiful, it was beautiful. Twenty-four hour flood dose, which I have done about thirteen years ago. But I wasn't dosed correctly and the pre the people doing it weren't really certified to do this. They they should have been. but I did enough of it to see that it was, it's it's like ayahuasca on steroids. If you do the proper 24 hour dose, you're and everybody's experience is different. One guy I spoke with during the flood dose met his ancestors who he didn't even know existed. And they helped him through all his trauma. And then when he came out of the dose and he went to his mom and said, Mom, this, you know, the guy said he was my grand uncle and da da and they were real. They were real people. Mane AF Podcast: Wow. James Jude Courtney: Other ones will see their entire past and past lives. Other people will see trauma from childhood and or they'll go into the shit. They'll go into the fights that they were in, the the the the you know, the the battles and recalibrate them. But they all come out different. But then you've got to do the work afterwards, and so You know, I I was there with two other men, thirty f mid thirties, both really amazing guys, but they were both wrecked. They were both wrecked from addiction, both professional, both highly intelligent, both successful. Dude, at the end of two weeks, they were different human beings. Different Mane AF Podcast: Wow. James Jude Courtney: human beings. And like I said, I can tell you right now, with all the personal growth that I'm working in my life and what I'm using. my brain for creatively and spiritually. It's and I'm only two weeks a away from it. Like not even two weeks away from having I can tell you right now, dude, the change it's making in my brain is astounding. Astounding. Mane AF Podcast: That is amazing. So now that moves on to the third act that we're we're both in. What are you working on now? You're working on are you doing a lot of writing and creating or are you waiting for that next big role or you trying to create that next big role? James Jude Courtney: You know, I'm not I'm not pursuing because you know the business has changed. Tyler, when we were young, Mane AF Podcast: Totally. James Jude Courtney: you know, I mean, we we would go and and meet with casting directors and they'd put us on tape. But the casting director knew what the director wanted. So we could do something and she'd go, or he would go, you know, that's really good. But I think what he's looking for, or I think what the director is looking for is why don't you try this? So you and then you built a relationship with this person. And it might not be that role, and I might not be ten auditions, but all of a sudden you get a call from that casting director going. Tyler, you are so right for this, and I'm gonna push for you. And I Mane AF Podcast: Yep. James Jude Courtney: can't tell you how many times I got hired because of that, right? Now you're going, you're self-taping, which there's there's no interaction. You don't get to talk to anybody who knows what the director wants, who has any feel for anything, and you're doing the casting director's work for them. You know? You have to have them. Yeah. So Mane AF Podcast: Yeah. And you gotta hope what you gotta hope you got what they want in the in your mind and you're giving it to 'cause you got your one shot. So yeah. It's a different world. It's a different different world. Definitely working in a vacuum. Yeah. Yeah. James Jude Courtney: Yeah, it's it's it's just it's not fair. It's a different world. And it's not fair. It you know, it it's it's and I feel sorry for these young people because you know, the young people coming up in this business now because because of streaming, they're never gonna make the money we made, you know, they're not gonna Mane AF Podcast: Yeah. James Jude Courtney: see the residuals that we made. so my decision was, I'm and this is what I came back here to do anyhow, is focus on my writing, focus on producing. And so I've got a television thing that we're very, very close to to to pulling in. And unfortunately I can't speak about it. But when I can speak about it, we are gonna absolutely speak about it because that's when the whole PR thing starts and you know, and and that's when I get to do podcasts with beautiful people like you and talk about that. And and then I've got two films. Yeah, yeah, man. Yeah. Yeah. Mane AF Podcast: Yeah. Well then you'll have to come back on here. Yeah. James Jude Courtney: Yeah, one hundred percent. And and you know, and the The the two films I've got going, I'm dealing with European financing and Middle Eastern financing. And you know, so we're we're it's here's the deal, man. You know, talent matters, hard work matters more, but in the end persistence is omnipotent. The day you quit, I mean Mane AF Podcast: Yeah. It's a it's a grind. It is a grind doing what we do. Like, I mean, people don't realize the project that we're that we're working on is the last part in red tape, the one that deals with the human trafficking. I think I talked to you about a bit. James Jude Courtney: yeah, yeah. Mane AF Podcast: And we've been working on that for fifteen, eighteen years now, you know? The book came James Jude Courtney: Yeah. Mane AF Podcast: across my desk and it it it takes time. People don't realize it. You know, every once in a while a person can James Jude Courtney: It you know, I I give myself some Mane AF Podcast: Do something and blow it out real quick, but that's that's that's James Jude Courtney: Good for them. Mane AF Podcast: a rare, rare occasion. And I have a question for you, James, because you are obviously, you know, from all of our conversations, I know that you're very philosophically aware. what kind of stories are you excited to put out at this point? Like what kind of stories do you want to tell? Do you think the world re needs right now? James Jude Courtney: You know, playing Michael Myers actually taught me a lot about this. because I have gotten so many handwritten letters, DMs, people coming up to me and and at conventions and saying, you saved my life. I was thinking about suicide and then you said something on a podcast or I went and watched, you know, in the a matinee with nobody else in the and I watched you well so that made me you think about, yeah, I love action. Yes, I love, you know, y All these different genres that we can dip into. But I went, you know, man, I want to tell a story that uplifts and inspires. And I was moved by how David Gordon Green was very committed to addressing social issues in his films. You know, like Halloween kills, the the we called it mob rules. You know, you don't put the title of your film out there, right? The on the back of our chairs and the in the call sheets, it was mob rules. Well, He was examining mob mentality and boom, 2016 happens, you know, January 2016. Mob mentality. Like he tapped into so many things that had prescience and and and meaning in our world. So for me, you know, I I I I want to w use the elements that we find exciting. but at the end of the day, I want the audience to walk out uplifted, inspired, and maybe, and one of them has to do with has to do with high school soccer players and and I want, you know, a parents to walk out treating their children differently. I want people to walk out realizing, wait a minute, I don't have to have to ask for somebody's permission to succeed. I don't have to ask for somebody's permission to do what I love. I can do what I love and I can and I can create the world in my own in my own being. And so that kind of thing for me is at the end of the day, you know, when when I pass over to the other side, I want to look back and at these projects and go, you know, Hopefully I inspired somebody to know. And here's the deal, man. You know, like this persistence is omnipotent thing. Like, as I look in the rear view mirror of my life, the highway is littered with bodies of people who quit, people who quit too soon. You know? And my dad used to say, Yeah, right. You know, quitters never win. Mane AF Podcast: Yep. So true. So true. James Jude Courtney: You know. So, so if we can inspire people to to pursue, and dude, it's not easy. We know this. There's tough times, there's hard times, there's weak times, there's but Mane AF Podcast: Highs and lows. It it's like a roller coaster ride, and you gotta be ready for that. You know, that the highs James Jude Courtney: Yeah. Mane AF Podcast: are the highs are highs and the the lows, you're like, am I ever gonna see another role come my way? You know? I I had that a lot. It's like when you've done one role and then you're moving on to the next, and it's like, what am I gonna do now? You know, it's a grind. James Jude Courtney: my God. It's it's it and here's the thing is like you guys are working on your stuff. I, you know, I'm working on my stuff. Sarah is, I mean, her comic book is Save 625 species from extinction. You know, her, so she's, she's already establishing herself. But her photography and her writing, and she's she's younger than myself, clearly. So she gets really frustrated that things aren't happening enough. And I'm like, baby, trust me, you're doing the work. You're doing the right thing. It's it it it has a rhythm of its own. It has a timing of its own. Our job is to be prepared. Our j it's like Rocky, you know, our job Mane AF Podcast: Yeah. Yep. James Jude Courtney: is to when you get invited into the frickin' ring, be frickin' prepared, man. You know. Mane AF Podcast: Yeah. Yeah. Like it well in wrestling we called it paying your dues, you know. You pay your dues and and wait for that good role or the next thing, you know? Well, it's interesting, as I listen to you talk about that too. It does feel 'cause you started in journalism. You have a degree in journalism, right? James Jude Courtney: Well, I I I studied that because the University of South Carolina had one of the best journalism schools in the nation. And back in the seventies, you you you film school was NYU for documentaries, and if you wanted to make feature films, it was UCLA and University of Southern California. That was it. So there was no way my dad with seven boys was gonna pay for me to go to one of those schools. So I went there because I looked at it and I've always been interested in journalism, but I looked at it and went, wait a minute, journalism is about bending minds. And having them walk away, having the the readership walk away with the belief system that you just put into that article. Filmmaking is the exact same thing. So I learned from Emmy Award winning, Pulitzer Prize winning, you know, journalists, and it applies directly to making films. And, you know, I did a little bit of theater, but it was never about theater to me. It was always about film. I started making my own films in fifth grade. So, you know, I I mean, it's always been about film. And and here's the thing too, man. I went out to California. I didn't know anybody. I didn't have any uncles in the business. I didn't have it, you know, I had nothing. Mane AF Podcast: Yeah. James Jude Courtney: And I I'm not the member of any tribe and any group or collective. I'm just a guy out there by myself. And somehow, some way I managed to, you know, make a l start making a living pretty early. And and and and and there are a lot of no. Mane AF Podcast: And it doesn't happen overnight. It doesn't happen overnight. People don't realize, like that's the same with me. I I was coming from Canada and it was like I knew nobody, had no clue how the business worked or anything. So yeah, it's it's a grind, man, what we to think James Jude Courtney: D I I'm Mane AF Podcast: I mean, a normal person probably wouldn't last As long as we did, you know. You're sitting here at sixty nine, I'm sixty one and still doing it and still going strong, you know? Both of us. James Jude Courtney: Yeah, it's there's a certain persistence and tenaciousness and endurance. You have to have the endurance. I remember, you know, back in the day when Jean-Claude Van Damme was was at his height, and this this through these filmmakers I knew, these French filmmakers I used to hang out with, really cool people. and this this kid came from Belgium, French speaking Belgium. He was the newly minted European kickboxing champion. And he was gonna come out and be like Jean-Claude Van Damme. And you know, be a major star. And I was like, great, man. He goes, Yeah, I'm giving myself three years. And I bro, go home. Just make a reservation right now and go home. What do you mean? I said, bro, you ain't getting shit in three years. Give it 30. You know, like Mane AF Podcast: Yeah. Yeah. James Jude Courtney: you know, bro. No, everybody has that idea. But at the end of the day, like it it's you you have to be impervious to pain. I mean, you know, as an aspect. Mane AF Podcast: Yeah. You gotta be able to accept rejection. We've heard James Jude Courtney: Yes. Mane AF Podcast: I've heard no probably ten thousand times in my career. But I I still hear it from my wife Renee a lot. it's James Jude Courtney: Well Mane AF Podcast: my job, James. It's my job. No. James Jude Courtney: I hope you're good at it then. Mane AF Podcast: she's great at it. I practice daily. James Jude Courtney: Ha ha ha. Mane AF Podcast: But James, I wanna thank you so much for coming on and spending time with us. And we definitely when your projects come out, definitely want to have you back on. Yeah. A and James Jude Courtney: Wonderful. Love to. Yeah. Mane AF Podcast: I'm looking forward to sitting down and having another meal with you in the near future, buddy. And I want to see Sarah. Tell Sarah we said hi. Yay. James Jude Courtney: Absolutely. And by the way, yeah, Sarah's sending her love. She's in England right now, but she said make sure to give you guys a great big hug for me. So great big video hug. Mane AF Podcast: Yeah, big hugs, big, big hugs. Happy Halloween. Do you have big Halloween plans this year? James Jude Courtney: I don't know what's going to happen. I'm getting, you know, I I stepped away from conventions, but my publicist is getting requests. So I don't know. I might end up doing a couple just to go say hi to the fans. I really miss it. I miss the people. but Mane AF Podcast: Yeah. James Jude Courtney: you know, I I've been so wrapped up in the things I'm doing. So I don't know, I may do that. I I may I don't know. I I you know I've Mane AF Podcast: Do you do you do you ever dress up for Halloween and stuff like that? People fans always ask James Jude Courtney: No, no. Mane AF Podcast: me that. They go, hey, do you dress up? I said, once you play Michael Myers, what the hell are you gonna dress up as? Right? What are you gonna dress up as? I mean, I I James Jude Courtney: Exactly Exactly No Mane AF Podcast: I'll I'll go out of my way a little bit. I'll put maybe three dots on the top of my forehead and go as a bowling ball. But that's about it. James Jude Courtney: Well you know man, here's the thing, is if I'm going to a costume party, like a real costume party, heck yeah, man, I'll put a pirate costume on, it's like a but it'll be like a Western, you know, like Western costume costume, you know what mean? Like a costume. Yeah. Like you're Mane AF Podcast: It'll be like cosplay. You are you are serious. James Jude Courtney: yeah. But you know, doing what we do for a living, y you know, and you know when you put a period costume on, it changes you. When you put you know, when you when you put a Mane AF Podcast: Yes. Yeah. James Jude Courtney: football uniform on, it changes you. Like whatever you do. So for me to do it it's such a spiritual experience to walk around with a bunch of kids trick-or-treating with a coll I I I can't do it. Can't do it. Can't do it. Mane AF Podcast: I hear you. I feel that. But I I will say from my perspective, I get very competitive about the amount of candy. And so I have the biggest king size pillowcase. And then we have to get as many pounds of candy as possible. So that's that's kind of my yeah. James Jude Courtney: Well Mane AF Podcast: Well, thank you so much, James. We're gonna let you get back to your day. I have you have you hit the gym today already, or are you you have you hit it early? There you go. James Jude Courtney: Yes I have. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Mane AF Podcast: I walked the dog early after my radiation and then now I gotta go hit the gym. So I'm gonna kick you off of here so I go to the gym. James Jude Courtney: Have you have you have you looked at have you have you been doing acupuncture during your treatment and stuff? Mane AF Podcast: I have not. I have not. James Jude Courtney: You know, look into it 'cause is they the acupuncture and the herbs are really good at cooling the heat, like taking the heat out from radiation and and chemo. So yeah, it's really Mane AF Podcast: wow. I I think I w I want your brother's number, is what I learned today. I need James Jude Courtney: You can have it. Mane AF Podcast: I need an advisor. Yeah, there we go. That's awesome. That's awesome. Yeah, I'll d James Jude Courtney: He's he's he's a he's a smart kid. Smart kid. Yeah, definitely share that. Mane AF Podcast: I'm definitely gonna check into it. Yeah. Definitely. Love you James Jude Courtney: Yeah. I love you guys. It's so good to see you. Mane AF Podcast: too, buddy. This was so good to talk to you. It's so great to talk to you. Thank for hanging out with us. We really appreciate this. This is gonna be the episode that comes out right before Halloween. So this will be our, you know, Michael Myers. James Jude Courtney: So let me know so I can so I can blast it. Or actually Sarah do it Sarah do it Mane AF Podcast: Sounds good. Yeah. Awesome. James Jude Courtney: for me. So Mane AF Podcast: it is so crazy. James has so many stories. I love talking to him all the time. He comes in there with all this wisdom and he's looking amazing. Yeah. It's it's inspiring to me. He makes me wanna take better care of myself. Yeah. I I mean I So he got me. He helped one person with this podcast already. Exactly. And I mean I used to be the oldest Michael at forty one or forty-two. And then he steps up and does it at s 60. He was 60, 61 when he was in his first house. I think it's such a great message for people to hear because, you know, we we tell ourselves like I need to have it all figured out. I need to have done my my biggest things by thirty forty. Whatever. And James is just a a glowing positive example of you know Positive energy all the way. The best is yet gonna happen. Yeah. Yeah. That was amazing. Yep. Absolutely.
