- 0:01SPEAKER_00: Hello, Christians.
- 0:03SPEAKER_00: This is Dallas Beecham, and I've got good news.
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: Two travelers walked a dusty road from Jerusalem toward Emmaus.
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: Their steps moved forward, but their hearts were caught behind them.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: Jesus had been crucified.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: Women had reported that they found the tomb empty.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: Angels had said he was alive.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: Yet the travelers could not fit the pieces together.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: Hope had risen, then fallen, and now confusion walked beside them.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: A stranger drew near and asked what troubled them.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: It was Jesus, but their eyes were kept from recognizing him.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: They told him the story as they understood it.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: Then Jesus did something deeply important.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: He did not give them a clever slogan or ask them to trust a feeling.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: Luke twenty four says that beginning at Moses and all the prophets he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: Picture that road growing quiet as passage after passage stood together, the law, the promises, the prophets.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: Suffering glory, each witness kept its own place, yet together they pointed toward the Christ.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: Their hearts burned while he opened the scriptures.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: Later when he broke bread, their eyes were opened.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: They hurried back to Jerusalem with news too great to keep.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: That same chapter gives us another scene.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: In Luke 24, forty-four through forty nine, Jesus stood among his disciples and spoke of the law of Moses, the prophets, and the psalms.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: He opened their understanding.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: He showed that the Christ would suffer and rise, and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: Then he told them to wait for the power from on high.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: The written testimony, the risen Lord, and the coming mission belong together.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: Acts 2 shows Peter using Scripture with that same care.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: When the Holy Ghost was poured out, and the crowd wondered what it meant, Peter quoted Joel.
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: He did not stop at a matching phrase.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: He explained the events in its setting and turned the hearers toward Jesus.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: Then he used David's words from the Psalms to testify of the resurrection and explanation of Christ.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: Joel's prophecy and David's witness were not decorations.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: Peter read them as part of the message God was fulfilling.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: This teaches us how to compare scripture.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: Read each passage in its own context.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: Ask who is speaking, who is listening, what happened before, and what question is being answered.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: Then compare with patience, prayer, and honest hearts.
- 3:43SPEAKER_00: Matching words do not always mean matching subjects.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: The words spirit, kingdom, fire, or salvation may appear in different settings.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: A concordance can help us find verses, but only careful reading can show whether they address the same matter.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: Different details are not automatically contradictions.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: One traveler may mention a voice while another records the words spoken.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: One gospel writer may select details another does not include.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: Differences is not denial.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: We should let every writer say what he actually says before deciding there is a conflict.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: Sometimes the accounts fill out the same event from different viewpoints.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: We must also speak honestly about our own conclusions.
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: When the Bible directly says something, we may say Scripture says.
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: When we connect details and offer an explanation, we should make that clear.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: These passages together appear to show or I understand this to mean.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: Our explanation may be sound, but it is still our explanation.
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: Humility keeps us from placing our words on the same level as God's words.
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: So let the passage stand together.
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: Do not tear one verse from its home.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: Do not force two verses together because one word sounds alike.
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: Walk the road patiently.
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: Read Moses, the prophets, the Psalms, the Gospels, and Acts with open eyes.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: The goal is not to win an argument, the goal is to hear the witness faithfully and recognize the Lord at the center of it.
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: I hope today's message has touched your heart and causes you to have a good day.
