- 0:38Speaker: haven't you already.
- 0:39Speaker: Yes.
- 0:40Speaker: Yeah.
- 0:40Speaker: Holiday seems like a long distant memory.
- 0:42Speaker: But yeah, it's been a, it's been a busy week.
- 0:44Speaker: It's been quite a bit on.
- 0:45Speaker: We've had some us us people over
- 0:49Speaker: from our business and I had a,
- 0:51Speaker: a, a members meeting this week
- 0:53Speaker: as well.
- 0:53Speaker: That was all about EV looking at
- 0:56Speaker: state of health and battery
- 0:58Speaker: maintenance and battery
- 0:59Speaker: recycling and doing things like
- 1:01Speaker: this.
- 1:02Speaker: Yeah, it's been a it's been a
- 1:03Speaker: busy week, but a good,
- 1:04Speaker: interesting week.
- 1:05Speaker: But looking forward to a bit of a chill at the weekend.
- 1:08Speaker: But we must say thanks.
- 1:09Speaker: And I mean a huge thank you again to to Cal Davis.
- 1:13Speaker: And I know it's becoming a bit
- 1:15Speaker: of a regular appearance with Cal
- 1:17Speaker: with the holidays that we have
- 1:19Speaker: between us.
- 1:19Speaker: But Cal, thank you for such a
- 1:22Speaker: fabulous session last week and
- 1:25Speaker: sitting in for me for the the
- 1:26Speaker: Saturday headlines.
- 1:27Speaker: I know, I know, you do really enjoy it and it does come across
- 1:30Speaker: how much you do enjoy it.
- 1:32Speaker: Yeah, definitely.
- 1:33Speaker: Carl loves coming on and it's
- 1:35Speaker: always great to catch up with
- 1:36Speaker: him because um, you know, he's,
- 1:38Speaker: he's, he won't mind me saying
- 1:39Speaker: that he's been around for a long
- 1:40Speaker: time.
- 1:41Speaker: Yes.
- 1:42Speaker: And he can draw on, you know, decades in the sector as both a
- 1:46Speaker: retailer and consultant.
- 1:48Speaker: So, you know, he really does add a lot of value when he does.
- 1:52Speaker: Come on.
- 1:52Speaker: So yeah, I'll join you in thanking Carl.
- 1:54Speaker: Many thanks Carl.
- 1:56Speaker: Yeah.
- 1:57Speaker: And in the second half of today's pod.
- 2:01Speaker: We're going to be joined by Ian
- 2:03Speaker: Godbold for the the monthly top
- 2:05Speaker: tip.
- 2:06Speaker: And this time he poses the question is your dealership e a
- 2:12Speaker: t ING healthy?
- 2:15Speaker: And we'll leave Ian to explain why that's not about your teams
- 2:21Speaker: having a five a day fruit or veg routine in place.
- 2:27Speaker: Um, but more about maximizing your online used car marketing
- 2:33Speaker: to attract more searches.
- 2:35Speaker: So I am really looking forward to this one this week.
- 2:39Speaker: It's a great one.
- 2:40Speaker: It really is.
- 2:41Speaker: So, uh, yeah, that, that will
- 2:42Speaker: be, um, after the midway break
- 2:45Speaker: and in the first half, we'll be
- 2:47Speaker: joined by Rupert Pontin, who
- 2:49Speaker: will take us through Borrego's
- 2:51Speaker: trade value trends for
- 2:53Speaker: September.
- 2:54Speaker: Now the full episode is available in your podcast feed,
- 2:57Speaker: so do check out the full episode and also a shout out for one of
- 3:02Speaker: my old industry buddies, Al Clark, who sent us a copy of
- 3:07Speaker: Edison Co's latest report.
- 3:09Speaker: Now it's a new entrant playbook, um, white paper highlighting
- 3:15Speaker: what Chinese brands are teaching the UK market.
- 3:18Speaker: Now, it's written by former OEM boss Andy Carroll, who was at
- 3:24Speaker: the helm in the UK when she GM rebranded Daewoo as Chevrolet.
- 3:29Speaker: And I remember interviewing him at the Frankfurt Motor show
- 3:34Speaker: many, many years ago when that was actually happening, when
- 3:37Speaker: that was going through.
- 3:38Speaker: So Andy's got a huge amount of experience within the industry.
- 3:42Speaker: More recently, he's been working with Geely on the introduction
- 3:46Speaker: of Verizon in the UK.
- 3:48Speaker: But, uh, we'll, what we'll do is we'll put a link to the report
- 3:52Speaker: in the newsletter that goes out Monday, because it really is a
- 3:55Speaker: fascinating overview of the impacts Chinese brands are
- 4:00Speaker: making in the UK, and it's titled intriguingly five themes
- 4:05Speaker: every automotive market entry must get right.
- 4:09Speaker: So we're not going to go through
- 4:10Speaker: the five themes, but we'll we'll
- 4:12Speaker: send you the link so you can
- 4:14Speaker: read through them at your
- 4:15Speaker: leisure.
- 4:16Speaker: It really is a great read.
- 4:18Speaker: Definitely.
- 4:19Speaker: I'd agree with that one.
- 4:20Speaker: So do, do check that one out on your on the podcast newsletter
- 4:25Speaker: feed next week.

- 5:29Speaker: You're listening to the Motor
- 5:30Speaker: Trade Radio podcast powered by
- 5:33Speaker: Cazoo.
- 5:37Speaker: Headlines this week come from car dealer a m Motor Trade News
- 5:41Speaker: and The independent will start this week's show with Prego's
- 5:45Speaker: overview of how trade values performed in September.
- 5:49Speaker: And then look at the headlines
- 5:51Speaker: starting with hidden faults and
- 5:54Speaker: undisclosed damage tops the list
- 5:56Speaker: of concerns among used car
- 5:59Speaker: buyers, according to new
- 6:00Speaker: research.
- 6:02Speaker: More than half of UK car buyers
- 6:04Speaker: would prefer to finalize a
- 6:07Speaker: finance agreement in person,
- 6:09Speaker: despite the growth of online
- 6:11Speaker: finance tools.
- 6:13Speaker: Then, in the second half, the number of EV models on sale in
- 6:17Speaker: the UK has doubled in just three years, and you'll love this stat
- 6:23Speaker: with a new EV model hitting the market every single fortnight.
- 6:28Speaker: Um, also with staying with EVs,
- 6:31Speaker: with more of them on the road,
- 6:33Speaker: we're now starting to see the
- 6:35Speaker: real life data filtering through
- 6:38Speaker: to Mots.
- 6:39Speaker: We'll look at a new survey around that.
- 6:41Speaker: And finally, one to watch as the
- 6:44Speaker: European Union signals a move to
- 6:47Speaker: limit the impact the import of
- 6:49Speaker: Chinese hybrids.
- 6:51Speaker: In a move which could see stock diverted to the UK.
- 6:55Speaker: A. But first up is breakouts.
- 6:57Speaker: Rupert Ponton rounding up some
- 6:59Speaker: of September's key trade value
- 7:01Speaker: trends featured in our
- 7:04Speaker: standalone episode.
- 7:06Speaker: I mean, Rupert, again, always
- 7:08Speaker: fascinating to have you on the,
- 7:10Speaker: uh, the podcast for your, your
- 7:12Speaker: monthly round up of the market
- 7:15Speaker: trade values.
- 7:16Speaker: I mean, in this month's episode, I mean, we deep dive as normal
- 7:20Speaker: into sort of various areas from retail volumes and adverts into
- 7:25Speaker: trade value performance into obviously age profile activity.
- 7:30Speaker: And we always sort of talk a little bit around sort of
- 7:33Speaker: revenge, which seems to be more of a common conversation these
- 7:37Speaker: days in, in the the market.
- 7:39Speaker: I mean, do you want to just sort of talk us through some of those
- 7:42Speaker: conversations that we went through on the, the main episode
- 7:46Speaker: of the podcast, talking about that pre-reg activity month on
- 7:50Speaker: month and year on year retail advert volumes and what you're
- 7:53Speaker: seeing in the marketplace.
- 7:55Speaker: Yeah.
- 7:56Speaker: I mean we've seen an increase in sorry decrease in adverts
- 8:00Speaker: overall for September of two percent and year on year.
- 8:04Speaker: When you look at September, that
- 8:06Speaker: was a drop of minus zero point
- 8:08Speaker: nine percent.
- 8:08Speaker: So reasonably steady.
- 8:10Speaker: But from a pre-reg perspective for September, the Pre-reg
- 8:14Speaker: adverts have increased by twelve percent and I suggest that may
- 8:17Speaker: go higher depending on activity during the course of the month
- 8:21Speaker: for new car sales.
- 8:22Speaker: But the key thing to note here is that year on year, there was
- 8:26Speaker: an uplift of forty one point one percent in Pre-reg adverts,
- 8:29Speaker: which is significant.
- 8:30Speaker: That really does show what's happening in the market.
- 8:33Speaker: I mean, we talk about now twenty twenty six being more of a two
- 8:37Speaker: point two to two point three million new car market if the
- 8:40Speaker: trend continues through the remainder of the year.
- 8:43Speaker: But as you sounds like some of
- 8:44Speaker: that is obviously heavily driven
- 8:46Speaker: by more tactical activity than
- 8:48Speaker: we've seen in previous years
- 8:50Speaker: since twenty nineteen, which was
- 8:52Speaker: a significant year for that kind
- 8:53Speaker: of activity.
- 8:54Speaker: Yeah, I would agree with that.
- 8:55Speaker: We're seeing two tacks here.
- 8:57Speaker: We're seeing a very offensive attack on the marketplace from
- 9:00Speaker: the Chinese brands.
- 9:02Speaker: And at the same time we're seeing a very, um, reactive
- 9:06Speaker: response from legacy brands that are trying to make up for what's
- 9:10Speaker: going on and the assault that we're getting from Chinese OEMs.
- 9:14Speaker: I mean, another area that we touched on was obviously the the
- 9:18Speaker: fastest and slowest sellers, which I think was a surprise to
- 9:22Speaker: Curtis when we had that kind of conversation, because not quite
- 9:25Speaker: the manufacturers that we expected to be hearing.
- 9:28Speaker: No, you're absolutely right.
- 9:29Speaker: You know, the top three two Audi models in a Citroen model were a
- 9:33Speaker: little bit of a surprise, because I think there was an
- 9:36Speaker: expectation that we'd see some EVs in that list.
- 9:38Speaker: And there weren't.
- 9:39Speaker: Those three cars, one was a fossil fuel.
- 9:42Speaker: The Citroen was a fossil fuel.
- 9:43Speaker: There was one fossil fuel Audi and a hybrid.
- 9:47Speaker: So not the usual contenders.
- 9:49Speaker: It's a different marketplace thus far this month, but it did
- 9:53Speaker: sound that when we actually talked about the EV only fastest
- 9:56Speaker: sellers, that some of that may be driven by a little that
- 9:59Speaker: pre-reg activity that we were talking about earlier.
- 10:02Speaker: Well, you're right.
- 10:03Speaker: Yeah.
- 10:03Speaker: The leap motor is quite often
- 10:05Speaker: been in the top five fastest
- 10:07Speaker: sellers over the past few
- 10:09Speaker: months, and it sits at the top
- 10:10Speaker: with an average days to sale of
- 10:11Speaker: thirteen.
- 10:12Speaker: Um, but its age average age is one month old.
- 10:15Speaker: Fantastic.
- 10:16Speaker: Well, I said at the start, you know, it's great to have you on
- 10:18Speaker: the regular update for the, the marketplace and anybody that,
- 10:22Speaker: you know, we haven't listened to the full interview that Curtis
- 10:26Speaker: and I did with Rupert, then please do head over to your
- 10:28Speaker: podcast feed and, and have a full listen to.
- 10:31Speaker: And that was just a sort of
- 10:32Speaker: highlight, some of that
- 10:33Speaker: conversation that we had with
- 10:34Speaker: Rupert.
- 10:35Speaker: And thank you again for joining us this month.
- 10:36Speaker: Again, Rupert.
- 10:37Speaker: Always a pleasure, Philip.
- 10:41Speaker: It's such a great insight, isn't it?
- 10:42Speaker: Every month into what's
- 10:44Speaker: happening in the used car
- 10:46Speaker: sector, certainly in regards to
- 10:49Speaker: trade values.
- 10:51Speaker: Yeah.
- 10:52Speaker: I mean, as you say, I mean, we
- 10:53Speaker: it's always just so much going
- 10:55Speaker: on and so many areas we can talk
- 10:57Speaker: about with, with Rupert in, in
- 10:58Speaker: the market, but just trying to
- 11:00Speaker: focus on, you know, some of that
- 11:01Speaker: key activity.
- 11:02Speaker: I think one thing that was clear in, in this month's episode is
- 11:06Speaker: obviously, you know, what will happen now post September.
- 11:09Speaker: So I think we're probably
- 11:11Speaker: looking forward to the October
- 11:13Speaker: catch up when we get the full
- 11:14Speaker: month's activity around what's
- 11:16Speaker: happened in September and at
- 11:18Speaker: that time to analyze some of
- 11:19Speaker: that data.
- 11:20Speaker: Yes.
- 11:20Speaker: And, uh, those fastest selling
- 11:23Speaker: cars, I mean, that I always try
- 11:26Speaker: and second guess, um, Rupert on
- 11:29Speaker: that.
- 11:29Speaker: And, uh, I did badly again this time around because I assumed it
- 11:33Speaker: would be an EV topping the fastest sellers, but, uh, a
- 11:37Speaker: strong showing for some of the, um, well, I suppose we call them
- 11:41Speaker: fossil fuels cars now and hybrids rather than EVs.
- 11:46Speaker: Yeah, definitely.
- 11:47Speaker: Definitely.
- 11:47Speaker: So I mean, getting over to the headlines now and sticking with
- 11:51Speaker: data and analysis.
- 11:53Speaker: And this is the home to car
- 11:55Speaker: dealer and this is the car
- 11:57Speaker: buyers fear hidden faults and
- 12:00Speaker: undisclosed damage on news cars
- 12:03Speaker: the most.
- 12:03Speaker: And this is a survey polled by Cazoo with more than one more
- 12:09Speaker: than two thousand car buyers, on what worries them most about
- 12:13Speaker: buying a used car, and this is that the survey follows an
- 12:17Speaker: extensive poll of their their readers in in trust in the the
- 12:24Speaker: motor trade and nearly two thirds fear hidden faults when
- 12:29Speaker: buying a used car.
- 12:31Speaker: Now I know you work with the the
- 12:33Speaker: team on this one, but
- 12:34Speaker: fascinating insight.
- 12:35Speaker: This.
- 12:36Speaker: Yeah, it really is a great piece
- 12:38Speaker: of research that was carried out
- 12:40Speaker: here of, as you say, two
- 12:42Speaker: thousand in market used car
- 12:44Speaker: buyers.
- 12:44Speaker: And it follows on.
- 12:46Speaker: We reported on the first part of
- 12:48Speaker: this research last week, which
- 12:49Speaker: was very about very much about
- 12:51Speaker: customer behavior.
- 12:54Speaker: And this, this moves on to, to really look at, um, you know,
- 12:58Speaker: some of the, um, some of the barriers that car buyers are
- 13:04Speaker: facing and some of the fears and uncertainties that they have.
- 13:07Speaker: So the poll found that sixty six
- 13:10Speaker: percent said that hidden faults
- 13:13Speaker: and damage were their main
- 13:15Speaker: concerns when buying a used car,
- 13:17Speaker: followed by unclear vehicle
- 13:19Speaker: history at forty six percent and
- 13:22Speaker: being overcharged at thirty nine
- 13:24Speaker: percent.
- 13:25Speaker: And the majority of used car
- 13:28Speaker: buyers polled, fifty four
- 13:29Speaker: percent said they expected some
- 13:32Speaker: friction or difficult
- 13:33Speaker: negotiations before they visited
- 13:36Speaker: a dealership.
- 13:37Speaker: And also, when it comes to trust in used car dealers, seventeen
- 13:43Speaker: percent of car buyers said they distrusted dealers, while half
- 13:47Speaker: of those are said they had neutral feelings and neither
- 13:52Speaker: trusted or distrusted dealers, suggesting that there's still a
- 13:56Speaker: lot of work there to be done.
- 13:58Speaker: Yeah, and there's some lovely
- 13:59Speaker: quotes in here from from Lucy
- 14:01Speaker: Tugby, who's the chief marketing
- 14:03Speaker: officer there at Cazoo that
- 14:05Speaker: really, you know, talk about
- 14:07Speaker: obviously the, the study itself
- 14:09Speaker: and the findings, but saying
- 14:10Speaker: that that's a real confidence
- 14:13Speaker: gap.
- 14:13Speaker: And they want to, to make car searching simpler and give
- 14:18Speaker: buyers the information they need to feel properly informed before
- 14:24Speaker: they speak to, to the dealers.
- 14:25Speaker: And that the benefit of being that is more confidence.
- 14:29Speaker: Being informed customers should ultimately mean better quality
- 14:34Speaker: conversations and leads, and saying that there isn't a one
- 14:39Speaker: single fix for the the trust issue and that they're not
- 14:44Speaker: pretending there is.
- 14:46Speaker: It's something that the industry
- 14:47Speaker: needs to tackle together to get
- 14:51Speaker: a greater.
- 14:52Speaker: Transparency is obviously an important place to start.
- 14:56Speaker: So real sort of stating some of them facts and some of the
- 14:59Speaker: challenges facing that sort of car buying marketplace.
- 15:04Speaker: And moving on to the next
- 15:05Speaker: headline, which is from AM and
- 15:07Speaker: it is UK car buyers favor
- 15:10Speaker: dealerships to finalize finance
- 15:12Speaker: deals.
- 15:13Speaker: So some, some welcome good news here for, for listeners.
- 15:17Speaker: So this is research that was done by Codeweavers.
- 15:21Speaker: And it was quite a large piece
- 15:24Speaker: of research because what they
- 15:26Speaker: did was they they surveyed five
- 15:28Speaker: thousand car buyers across the
- 15:30Speaker: UK, Germany, France, Spain and
- 15:33Speaker: Italy.
- 15:34Speaker: But this particular story reported by AM really does just
- 15:38Speaker: focus on the US, on the UK results of the survey.
- 15:42Speaker: So it found that more than half of UK car buyers would prefer to
- 15:46Speaker: finalize finalize a finance agreement in person.
- 15:51Speaker: Despite growing interest in online finance tools, and the
- 15:56Speaker: survey found that fifty five point four percent of UK
- 15:59Speaker: respondents favoured completing an agreement in person, compared
- 16:04Speaker: with fifteen percent who prefer to do so entirely online.
- 16:10Speaker: So this is actually really good news for dealers, isn't it?
- 16:13Speaker: Because it is.
- 16:14Speaker: Yeah, I think that's the key with it.
- 16:16Speaker: And as you say that the study
- 16:17Speaker: went into sort of, you know, a
- 16:19Speaker: deep dive into the UK, but
- 16:20Speaker: obviously looking at some of the
- 16:21Speaker: disparity and differences
- 16:23Speaker: between the UK and European car
- 16:25Speaker: buyers when it comes to, to car
- 16:28Speaker: finance.
- 16:28Speaker: But it was interesting to say, I
- 16:30Speaker: mean, that half of those that
- 16:33Speaker: responded in the UK said they
- 16:34Speaker: were confident checking the
- 16:36Speaker: monthly payment affordability
- 16:38Speaker: online, and fifty point two
- 16:40Speaker: percent are comparing finance
- 16:42Speaker: offers online at fifty point one
- 16:45Speaker: percent.
- 16:46Speaker: And but they say, you know, it's nearly half, forty nine point
- 16:50Speaker: four percent were comfortable completing eligibility and
- 16:54Speaker: affordability checks that way.
- 16:56Speaker: But as you say that the majority then when it came to completing
- 17:00Speaker: the finance, they wanted to do it in person at the dealership.
- 17:03Speaker: So I think, as you say, with the recent years that we've had
- 17:06Speaker: around the FCA and the redress and everything else that's been
- 17:10Speaker: discussed around the finance within the automotive sector, I
- 17:13Speaker: think it's confident that there is a place for the dealer in
- 17:16Speaker: this financial process, for the for the buyers.
- 17:20Speaker: Yeah, most definitely.
- 17:21Speaker: And it is a detailed survey.
- 17:23Speaker: So again, what we'll do is we'll
- 17:25Speaker: put a link to to this story in
- 17:27Speaker: the newsletter that goes out
- 17:29Speaker: Monday morning.
- 17:30Speaker: So we've got more headlines after the break.
- 17:34Speaker: Um next up is Ian Godbold.
- 17:38Speaker: You're listening to all the chatter that matters on motor
- 17:42Speaker: trade radio powered by Cazoo.
- 17:46Speaker: Next up is car retailing industry guru Ian Godbold,
- 17:50Speaker: sharing his top tips on how to steer your business to success.
- 18:00Speaker: Hello everyone and welcome to this month's Top Tip.
- 18:03Speaker: Well, here we are at the final
- 18:05Speaker: weekend of Q3 and a busy weekend
- 18:07Speaker: ahead with dealers chasing to
- 18:09Speaker: ensure they hit that top tier
- 18:10Speaker: commission on new cars and
- 18:12Speaker: finishing the month strongly for
- 18:14Speaker: used cars.
- 18:15Speaker: But today's top tip I'm asking
- 18:17Speaker: the question is your dealership
- 18:19Speaker: eating healthily?
- 18:21Speaker: And no, I'm not talking about
- 18:22Speaker: what your sales team have for
- 18:23Speaker: lunch.
- 18:24Speaker: I'm talking about e e a t
- 18:27Speaker: experience, expertise,
- 18:29Speaker: authoritativeness and
- 18:31Speaker: trustworthiness.
- 18:32Speaker: It's becoming increasingly important to how visible your
- 18:36Speaker: business is online.
- 18:38Speaker: One of the biggest marketing
- 18:39Speaker: battles in the motor trade right
- 18:40Speaker: now is taking place through
- 18:42Speaker: content.
- 18:43Speaker: When a consumer searches for a used car, they don't always
- 18:46Speaker: start by typing a make and model and clicking on a stock listing.
- 18:50Speaker: They might search for the best
- 18:51Speaker: family SUV for a particular
- 18:53Speaker: budget.
- 18:54Speaker: What it costs to run a used electric car, or where to find a
- 18:58Speaker: reliable first car locally.
- 19:00Speaker: The dealers answering those questions are getting in front
- 19:03Speaker: of buyers earlier, and we're starting to see the impact with
- 19:07Speaker: the dealers we work with.
- 19:08Speaker: For large dealer groups, a well thought out and joined up
- 19:12Speaker: content marketing strategy allows them to build on the
- 19:15Speaker: expertise they already have across their business.
- 19:18Speaker: Their teams know what customers
- 19:20Speaker: ask for on the forecourt, which
- 19:22Speaker: models are selling, and what
- 19:23Speaker: concerns come up again and
- 19:25Speaker: again.
- 19:26Speaker: When that knowledge is turned
- 19:28Speaker: into useful, well written
- 19:29Speaker: content, their websites can
- 19:31Speaker: start appearing for searches
- 19:32Speaker: around those subjects and
- 19:34Speaker: trends.
- 19:35Speaker: We're seeing some of the faster
- 19:36Speaker: moving groups in the ad one
- 19:38Speaker: hundred.
- 19:38Speaker: Take this seriously.
- 19:39Speaker: They're looking beyond the usual manufacturer pages and thinking
- 19:43Speaker: about the questions customers are asking before they decided
- 19:46Speaker: which car to buy.
- 19:48Speaker: But this is a real opportunity for independent dealers.
- 19:52Speaker: We work with some smaller
- 19:53Speaker: businesses that are building
- 19:54Speaker: visibility by writing about the
- 19:56Speaker: cars they sell and the areas
- 19:58Speaker: they serve.
- 19:59Speaker: A large group might have a bigger marketing budget, but an
- 20:02Speaker: independent dealer could often give a much more specific answer
- 20:05Speaker: to a local search.
- 20:07Speaker: They know the roads, the
- 20:08Speaker: customers and the stock on their
- 20:10Speaker: forecourt that comes through in
- 20:12Speaker: the content.
- 20:13Speaker: This brings us back to eat.
- 20:15Speaker: Search engines want to understand why your content
- 20:18Speaker: should be trusted and whether it offers something useful.
- 20:22Speaker: Is it based on genuine experience?
- 20:24Speaker: Does it demonstrate expertise?
- 20:26Speaker: Is the business recognised as an
- 20:28Speaker: authority and can consumers
- 20:30Speaker: trust the information being
- 20:31Speaker: provided?
- 20:33Speaker: You can see the difference when a dealer writes from experience.
- 20:37Speaker: Take a guide to buying a used electric car.
- 20:39Speaker: It's one thing to repeat the manufacturer's range figure.
- 20:42Speaker: It's much more to explain the
- 20:44Speaker: questions customers ask about
- 20:46Speaker: charging battery health and what
- 20:49Speaker: a realistic daily journey looks
- 20:50Speaker: like.
- 20:51Speaker: That gives the page a reason to
- 20:53Speaker: exist alongside all the other
- 20:55Speaker: search results.
- 20:57Speaker: AI search doesn't simply present consumers with a list of links.
- 21:01Speaker: It often creates a direct answer by bringing together information
- 21:05Speaker: from different sources.
- 21:07Speaker: If a dealer wants the feature within those answers, its
- 21:10Speaker: website needs to give AI systems clear and accurate, trustworthy
- 21:14Speaker: information that can understand and confidently use.
- 21:18Speaker: That means answering specific
- 21:20Speaker: questions, demonstrating real
- 21:22Speaker: world knowledge, and making it
- 21:24Speaker: clear who has created that
- 21:25Speaker: content.
- 21:26Speaker: It also means having consistent information across your website,
- 21:30Speaker: your business listings, and other trusted online sources.
- 21:34Speaker: The stronger those signals are,
- 21:36Speaker: the better opportunity for your
- 21:38Speaker: dealership to be recognized as a
- 21:40Speaker: credible source, not only by
- 21:42Speaker: Google, but also by AI platforms
- 21:44Speaker: shaping the next stage of online
- 21:47Speaker: search.
- 21:48Speaker: Eat isn't a score you can simply
- 21:50Speaker: add to a page, and publishing a
- 21:52Speaker: blog doesn't guarantee it will
- 21:54Speaker: appear in search for AI
- 21:55Speaker: generated answer.
- 21:56Speaker: But clear original content helps
- 21:59Speaker: search engines and AI platforms
- 22:01Speaker: understand what your business
- 22:03Speaker: knows, where it operates, and
- 22:05Speaker: which consumer questions it can
- 22:07Speaker: answer.
- 22:09Speaker: If a customer finds your
- 22:10Speaker: dealership while they're working
- 22:12Speaker: out what car to buy, you have an
- 22:14Speaker: opportunity to earn their trust
- 22:16Speaker: well before they send an
- 22:17Speaker: inquiry.
- 22:18Speaker: That's why content has become
- 22:20Speaker: such an important part of the
- 22:21Speaker: marketing mix.
- 22:22Speaker: Whether you're an one hundred
- 22:24Speaker: group or small independent
- 22:26Speaker: dealer now, if you'd like to
- 22:27Speaker: discuss your dealership's blog
- 22:28Speaker: content strategy and how IGC
- 22:31Speaker: digital can support your search
- 22:32Speaker: visibility and why digital
- 22:34Speaker: growth.
- 22:34Speaker: Email me at Ian Godbold at igc
- 22:37Speaker: digital dot co dot UK or find me
- 22:40Speaker: on LinkedIn.
- 22:41Speaker: Let's make sure your dealership
- 22:42Speaker: is eating as healthily as it
- 22:44Speaker: should be.
- 22:45Speaker: Have a great weekend.
- 22:46Speaker: A strong finish to Q3 and I'll see you all again very soon.
- 22:52Speaker: So it wasn't about fruit and veg, was it, Phil?
- 22:54Speaker: He just introduced yet another
- 22:56Speaker: acronym to the, uh, the
- 22:57Speaker: automotive.
- 22:58Speaker: Yes he did.
- 22:59Speaker: Yes.
- 22:59Speaker: Yeah, yeah.
- 23:01Speaker: It's a tricky one, isn't it?
- 23:03Speaker: Double e a t I n g. Yeah, yeah.
- 23:09Speaker: Not the, uh.
- 23:10Speaker: I wonder what we'll be trying to remember that one in the future
- 23:13Speaker: when we're referring back to it.
- 23:15Speaker: But yeah, I mean, again, fascinating insight there.
- 23:18Speaker: And really, you know, as AI
- 23:21Speaker: being the big topic of
- 23:22Speaker: conversation, not just for
- 23:24Speaker: automotive, but across the
- 23:26Speaker: globe.
- 23:26Speaker: I think, Ian, given his insight as to how you need to use it in
- 23:31Speaker: the way AI is now surfacing information and dealing
- 23:35Speaker: information and vehicles is, is critical these days, isn't it,
- 23:39Speaker: for the sector?
- 23:40Speaker: Yeah, very much so.
- 23:41Speaker: And, um, he did, uh, actually bringing up trustworthiness,
- 23:45Speaker: which links with the first story that we were talking about this
- 23:50Speaker: week and the importance of having trustworthy information.
- 23:55Speaker: And, and also now thinking in terms of whatever is posted is
- 24:00Speaker: being picked up by AI.
- 24:01Speaker: So if AI finds something that
- 24:04Speaker: seems credible, trustworthy,
- 24:07Speaker: then chances are that's going to
- 24:08Speaker: be promoted.
- 24:09Speaker: That's that's going to be higher up.
- 24:11Speaker: So some points well made there.
- 24:13Speaker: And, um, when we caught up with
- 24:15Speaker: Ian during the week, I did ask
- 24:18Speaker: him how September is looking
- 24:20Speaker: because obviously he's out and
- 24:21Speaker: about every single day in
- 24:24Speaker: dealerships.
- 24:25Speaker: And, uh, he did say it's a particularly busy, busy month.
- 24:28Speaker: And, uh, you know, he, he
- 24:30Speaker: described it as potentially a
- 24:32Speaker: massive new car month, driven in
- 24:35Speaker: part by new entrants and the
- 24:37Speaker: continued growth of the Chinese
- 24:39Speaker: brands.
- 24:40Speaker: And he did actually go on to say
- 24:42Speaker: that, uh, he suspects some of
- 24:43Speaker: the more traditional volume
- 24:45Speaker: brands may be feeling the
- 24:46Speaker: pressure.
- 24:47Speaker: And he said it will be fascinating to see the market
- 24:51Speaker: share numbers when they are released next month and to
- 24:54Speaker: understand where the volumes have actually come from.
- 24:57Speaker: So we'll be reporting on that in a couple of weeks time.
- 25:00Speaker: Once the Smmt closes the books on September.
- 25:04Speaker: It'll be a big dive into that data for ourselves.
- 25:07Speaker: And obviously when we get Rupert back on as well.
- 25:10Speaker: But heading back to to the headlines and this is going back
- 25:14Speaker: to car dealer, the EV choice doubles in just three years as
- 25:18Speaker: new electric electrified models hits UK market every fortnight.
- 25:24Speaker: Yes, a new car enters market
- 25:27Speaker: every fortnight, saying that the
- 25:29Speaker: number of fully electric models
- 25:30Speaker: available in the UK buy for
- 25:33Speaker: available to UK buyers has
- 25:35Speaker: doubled to more than one hundred
- 25:37Speaker: and seventy since twenty twenty
- 25:40Speaker: three.
- 25:41Speaker: More than three quarters of new car models can now drive with
- 25:47Speaker: zero tailpipe emissions.
- 25:49Speaker: Then the latest EVs can cover
- 25:51Speaker: more than three hundred miles on
- 25:54Speaker: on the range, and this is come
- 25:55Speaker: from the Smmt in their latest
- 25:57Speaker: insight output.
- 25:59Speaker: Yeah.
- 25:59Speaker: And you know, hasn't the market changed in certainly that I was
- 26:03Speaker: going to say five years.
- 26:04Speaker: But it's probably less than that.
- 26:05Speaker: It's two or three years.
- 26:07Speaker: Uh, because you know, you think back to the podcast we were
- 26:10Speaker: doing then and EVs very niche, not a huge amount of choice,
- 26:16Speaker: but, you know, the momentum has really built now and the Smmt
- 26:21Speaker: have looked at the number of models now on the market.
- 26:24Speaker: And they've found that, um, a total of eighty five new battery
- 26:28Speaker: electric vehicles have reached the UK since twenty twenty
- 26:32Speaker: three, giving buyers the choice of one hundred and seventy one
- 26:37Speaker: different model options.
- 26:39Speaker: And let's not forget that
- 26:41Speaker: they're joined by one hundred
- 26:43Speaker: and nine plugins and fifty two
- 26:45Speaker: conventional hybrids, meaning
- 26:47Speaker: that, as you said, more than
- 26:49Speaker: three quarters of the three
- 26:51Speaker: hundred and eighty five models
- 26:52Speaker: currently on sale in the UK
- 26:55Speaker: benefit from some kind of
- 26:57Speaker: electrification.
- 26:58Speaker: So it really is showing the momentum now, isn't it?
- 27:01Speaker: Yeah.
- 27:01Speaker: And it's summed up quite nicely
- 27:03Speaker: by Mike Hawes, who's the chief
- 27:05Speaker: executive office at the Smmt,
- 27:09Speaker: saying that Britain's new car
- 27:11Speaker: market has never afforded so
- 27:13Speaker: much choice, with a new electric
- 27:15Speaker: model arriving every fortnight
- 27:18Speaker: and zero emission motoring now
- 27:20Speaker: available in every shape and
- 27:23Speaker: size of vehicles in the
- 27:25Speaker: industry, investment is
- 27:27Speaker: delivering the products
- 27:29Speaker: performance and range drivers
- 27:31Speaker: need, while compelling offers,
- 27:34Speaker: and are helping more people make
- 27:38Speaker: the switch.
- 27:39Speaker: So quite optimistic this time
- 27:41Speaker: from from Mike rather than the
- 27:43Speaker: challenges around the the Z-Man
- 27:45Speaker: that we've seen for, for some
- 27:46Speaker: time.
- 27:47Speaker: Yeah.
- 27:47Speaker: I was going to say he didn't mention the Zev mandate.
- 27:51Speaker: He put it on the back burner for the time being.
- 27:55Speaker: Yeah.
- 27:55Speaker: Yeah, exactly.
- 27:56Speaker: Exactly.
- 27:57Speaker: Sticking with EV, I mean, this is a lovely story in the next
- 28:00Speaker: one into it.
- 28:00Speaker: And it's nice to see this kind
- 28:01Speaker: of data coming out now in the
- 28:03Speaker: independent.
- 28:05Speaker: Yeah it is.
- 28:06Speaker: The headline there is electric cars beat petrol models as the
- 28:10Speaker: miles pile up, MIT study finds.
- 28:13Speaker: So no big surprises here in the results.
- 28:17Speaker: But as you say, it's what we're
- 28:20Speaker: seeing now is the real world
- 28:22Speaker: data coming through from EVs,
- 28:25Speaker: especially those that are going
- 28:26Speaker: through Mots, some for the first
- 28:29Speaker: time.
- 28:29Speaker: So the story, um, says, you know, with EVs clocking up the
- 28:34Speaker: miles, um, we're now in a position where we can actually
- 28:39Speaker: compare what their reliability is like with some of the petrol
- 28:45Speaker: and diesel models.
- 28:46Speaker: And the research found that EV failure rates, um, level off at
- 28:50Speaker: around sixty thousand miles, while those for petrol and
- 28:54Speaker: diesel keep climbing.
- 28:56Speaker: And this is based on research of four forty seven point four
- 29:02Speaker: million MOT tests.
- 29:04Speaker: So pretty comprehensive.
- 29:07Speaker: But it confirms what we suspected was going to be the
- 29:11Speaker: case that EVs are more reliable, fewer moving parts, no engines
- 29:16Speaker: to go wrong.
- 29:17Speaker: And this is now coming through in the data isn't it?
- 29:20Speaker: It is.
- 29:21Speaker: Yeah.
- 29:21Speaker: And there's lots of cars
- 29:23Speaker: obviously aged between three and
- 29:25Speaker: eight years, with ninety to one
- 29:27Speaker: hundred thousand miles on the
- 29:29Speaker: clock and sixteen point five
- 29:30Speaker: percent of EVs failed against
- 29:33Speaker: twenty two point one percent of
- 29:35Speaker: petrol cars.
- 29:37Speaker: And that makes the electric car
- 29:39Speaker: around twenty five percent less
- 29:41Speaker: likely to fail at that first MLT
- 29:43Speaker: point.
- 29:44Speaker: Above one hundred and twenty
- 29:45Speaker: thousand miles, the gap widens
- 29:47Speaker: to sixteen percent for EVs and
- 29:49Speaker: twenty three point five percent
- 29:51Speaker: for petrol vehicles and a lower
- 29:54Speaker: mileages.
- 29:56Speaker: A little bit, uh, to choose between.
- 29:59Speaker: Very little to choose between,
- 30:00Speaker: um, twenty and forty thousand
- 30:03Speaker: miles at twelve percent of
- 30:04Speaker: electric vehicles fail compared
- 30:06Speaker: to eleven point seven percent of
- 30:09Speaker: petrol vehicles.
- 30:10Speaker: So I think clearly this is, is data and evidence now showing,
- 30:14Speaker: as you say, Curtis there that fewer components to fail at that
- 30:18Speaker: first MLT point.
- 30:19Speaker: And as we start to see more EVs
- 30:22Speaker: enter that sort of three year
- 30:24Speaker: upward, um, age vehicle park in,
- 30:27Speaker: in the UK, more of this data and
- 30:29Speaker: evidence shows in terms of that
- 30:31Speaker: wear and tear of items on EVs
- 30:33Speaker: compared to combustion engines
- 30:35Speaker: that we've previously been
- 30:36Speaker: looking at.
- 30:37Speaker: Yeah, definitely.
- 30:38Speaker: And to give it even more
- 30:39Speaker: context, the research was
- 30:41Speaker: commissioned by the British
- 30:43Speaker: Vehicle Rental and Leasing
- 30:45Speaker: Association.
- 30:46Speaker: And why would they be interested?
- 30:48Speaker: Well, Toby Poston, chief exec of
- 30:51Speaker: the BVR, said in the story many
- 30:54Speaker: of the EVs now entering the used
- 30:56Speaker: market have had their first life
- 30:59Speaker: in company and leasing fleets,
- 31:02Speaker: and have already covered
- 31:03Speaker: substantial mileage.
- 31:04Speaker: What this data shows is that
- 31:06Speaker: mileage alone should not put
- 31:08Speaker: consumers off.
- 31:10Speaker: A well-maintained, higher mileage electric car can be an
- 31:14Speaker: extremely durable used vehicle.
- 31:17Speaker: So, um, that that really does put some context into, uh, you
- 31:22Speaker: know, certainly EVs on the used car market and in terms of
- 31:27Speaker: reliability and breaking down some of those barriers.
- 31:31Speaker: Yeah.
- 31:32Speaker: And the final story of today,
- 31:34Speaker: and always good or bad news,
- 31:36Speaker: depending on how you look at
- 31:37Speaker: this one.
- 31:37Speaker: Curtis.
- 31:38Speaker: But what EU curbs on Chinese
- 31:42Speaker: hybrids could mean for UK
- 31:44Speaker: dealerships now.
- 31:46Speaker: Now this is that the European Union attempts to limit imports
- 31:50Speaker: of Chinese made hybrids cars, and that could intensify
- 31:54Speaker: competition for the UK dealers if manufacturers redirect stock
- 31:59Speaker: away from continental Europe and support with a sharper pricing
- 32:06Speaker: here in the the UK.
- 32:08Speaker: So I mean this is the.
- 32:10Speaker: Brussels is obviously considering asking Beijing to
- 32:14Speaker: accept voluntary restrictions on Chinese hybrid exports as part
- 32:21Speaker: of a negotiation.
- 32:22Speaker: Yeah.
- 32:22Speaker: I wonder how that's going to go.
- 32:24Speaker: I know a trade dispute according to the Financial Times report.
- 32:29Speaker: So yeah, I mean it's it's just phenomenal how this is all.
- 32:33Speaker: I mean, we have obviously the boss of cherry saying that the
- 32:36Speaker: UK is potentially a three million new car market, and that
- 32:40Speaker: sparks conversation around, you know, what that does to the UK's
- 32:43Speaker: vehicle pack and more importantly, depreciation and
- 32:45Speaker: used car residual values.
- 32:47Speaker: But you know, this is now things that's happening across Europe.
- 32:51Speaker: And does that mean that you know that three million.
- 32:56Speaker: Figure from from the boss of Chery could be a more realistic
- 33:00Speaker: if this goes ahead and the UK is the one without the tariffs that
- 33:04Speaker: the manufacturers focus.
- 33:06Speaker: Yeah.
- 33:06Speaker: And you mentioned tariffs because this was all prompted by
- 33:10Speaker: EU tariffs on Chinese made EVs.
- 33:14Speaker: And those tariffs are up to forty five percent.
- 33:16Speaker: So the Chinese manufacturers
- 33:19Speaker: being nimble, which is something
- 33:21Speaker: we talk a lot about on the
- 33:23Speaker: podcast.
- 33:24Speaker: They thought, okay, if you're going to tariff this on EVs,
- 33:29Speaker: we'll sell more hybrids.
- 33:32Speaker: Instead, we'll export more hybrids into the EU.
- 33:37Speaker: And, you know, this is affecting, uh, certainly
- 33:40Speaker: European car makers because they're now competing against
- 33:44Speaker: Chinese hybrids as well as EVs.
- 33:48Speaker: So if this does go through, what
- 33:50Speaker: this particular story sort of
- 33:53Speaker: alludes to is that hybrids that
- 33:55Speaker: the Chinese manufacturers are
- 33:57Speaker: currently making for the EU
- 33:59Speaker: markets will be diverted to the
- 34:02Speaker: UK, which is good news for
- 34:04Speaker: consumers.
- 34:06Speaker: There'll be more choice, more availability.
- 34:09Speaker: Um, good news for some manufacturers, but, uh, not so
- 34:13Speaker: great news for some of the um, legacy or heritage brands, some
- 34:18Speaker: of the established brands.
- 34:19Speaker: So definitely one to watch this, isn't it?
- 34:23Speaker: It is.
- 34:24Speaker: Yeah.
- 34:24Speaker: And there's a lot playing out
- 34:25Speaker: because obviously there's the
- 34:26Speaker: export from the UK into, into
- 34:28Speaker: Europe around tariffs as well
- 34:30Speaker: being discussed at the minute
- 34:31Speaker: where that could, you know,
- 34:33Speaker: challenge product coming out of
- 34:34Speaker: the UK into Into You, which
- 34:37Speaker: again, you know, does that mean
- 34:38Speaker: that there'd be more pressure
- 34:40Speaker: on, you know, UK manufacturers
- 34:42Speaker: or however small they may be in
- 34:44Speaker: terms of volume, but that then
- 34:46Speaker: puts pressure on the domestic
- 34:48Speaker: market.
- 34:48Speaker: So you have this kind of double
- 34:51Speaker: impact, don't you, that you
- 34:53Speaker: can't export as much from the
- 34:54Speaker: UK.
- 34:55Speaker: So therefore they have to come into the UK marketplace.
- 34:57Speaker: And again, you know, heavy focus from the the Chinese
- 35:00Speaker: manufacturers because of that, that line of least resistance
- 35:03Speaker: into the UK market.
- 35:05Speaker: So yeah, a lot, a lot going on,
- 35:07Speaker: um, at the minute in that
- 35:08Speaker: sector, but we'll, we'll see
- 35:10Speaker: this one as it, as it plays out
- 35:12Speaker: going forward.
- 35:13Speaker: Yeah, I think we've just
- 35:14Speaker: demonstrated that it's never a
- 35:16Speaker: dull moment in the car industry
- 35:18Speaker: is it.
- 35:19Speaker: It's certainly not.
- 35:20Speaker: So I say I mean just to just to finalize up here.
- 35:24Speaker: Do do have a listen to the full interview with Rupert Ponting
- 35:27Speaker: from from Bravo that was shared on your, your podcast feed on,
- 35:31Speaker: on Friday morning of this week.
- 35:33Speaker: If you're listening to us on Saturday morning.
- 35:36Speaker: Um, and always if you do need to reach out to Rupert, please do
- 35:39Speaker: do get in touch.
- 35:40Speaker: I'm sure that give him a chance
- 35:42Speaker: to get to the end of September
- 35:43Speaker: and digest some of the, uh, the
- 35:45Speaker: data.
