- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn French with Fexingo. I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. Last episode we described how people look — tall, short, young. Today, let's talk about what people are like on the inside. Lucas: Yes, personality adjectives. So useful for describing friends or characters in a movie. Luna: Oh, I love that. Let's start with a common one. How do I say 'kind' or 'nice' in French? Lucas: The word is 'gentil'. Listen: gentil. Say it with me. Luna: Gentil. Lucas: Perfect. For a masculine person: il est gentil. For a feminine: elle est gentille. The spelling changes but the sound is similar. Luna: Il est gentil. Elle est gentille. Got it. Lucas: Now another word: 'sympa'. It means 'nice' or 'friendly'. It's informal. Say it: sympa. Luna: Sympa. Lucas: Great. You can say 'il est sympa' or 'elle est sympa'. It doesn't change. Luna: So 'sympa' is easier than 'gentil'. Lucas: Exactly. Now, if someone is smart, you say 'intelligent'. Listen: intelligent. Luna: Intelligent. Lucas: For feminine: intelligente. But the pronunciation is almost the same. Luna: Il est intelligent. Elle est intelligente. Lucas: Yes! You're a natural. Next: 'drôle' — funny. Say it: drôle. Luna: Drôle. Lucas: It stays the same for masculine and feminine: il est drôle, elle est drôle. Luna: I like that. One more? How about 'shy'? Lucas: That's 'timide'. Listen: timide. Luna: Timide. Also the same for both? Lucas: Exactly. Il est timide, elle est timide. Luna: Perfect. So today we have gentil, sympa, intelligent, drôle, timide. Lucas: Let's practice with a little story. Imagine we're talking about a friend. 'Mon ami Lucas est gentil et intelligent.' What does that mean? Luna: My friend Lucas is kind and smart. Hey, that's you! Lucas: Flattery will get you everywhere. Now you try: 'Ma amie Luna est sympa et drôle.' Luna: Wait, 'amie' feminine? So 'mon amie' or 'ma amie'? I remember from before: we say 'mon amie' because of the vowel sound. Lucas: Right! So 'mon amie Luna est sympa et drôle.' Luna: Mon amie Luna est sympa et drôle. I like that. Lucas: And if someone is shy, you can say 'il est timide'. Luna: Let's do a quick recap. Repeat after me: gentil. Lucas: Gentil. Luna: Sympa. Lucas: Sympa. Luna: Intelligent. Lucas: Intelligent. Luna: Drôle. Lucas: Drôle. Luna: Timide. Lucas: Timide. Excellent! Luna: You know, if Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with French, maybe you've noticed how these little words add up. Now, let's try a short dialogue. Imagine you meet someone new. You could say 'Il est très sympa.' Luna: He is very nice. 'Très' means very? Lucas: Exactly. So 'très gentil' is very kind, 'très intelligent' very smart. You can use it with any adjective. Luna: What about 'très drôle'? Very funny. Lucas: Yes. Now, let's do a full sentence: 'Ma sœur est très timide.' My sister is very shy. Luna: Ma sœur est très timide. Lucas: And 'Mon frère est très intelligent.' Luna: Mon frère est très intelligent. Lucas: Great! Now let's reverse it. How would you say 'My friend is very funny'? Luna: Mon ami est très drôle. Or mon amie est très drôle. Lucas: Perfect. You can also describe yourself. 'Je suis timide.' I am shy. Luna: Je suis timide. Or 'Je suis drôle'. Lucas: Yes. So today we learned five adjectives: gentil, sympa, intelligent, drôle, timide. And the word 'très' to intensify. Luna: I feel like I can already describe half my friends. Lucas: That's the idea. Keep practicing these with people you know. In your head, say 'il est...' or 'elle est...' with the adjective. Luna: And next time we meet, we'll build on these. For now, practice until then. Lucas: Merci d'écouter Fexingo. See you next episode! Luna: Bye bye!
