- 0:08Speaker 1: Well, hump day, Wednesday, whatever you want to call it.
- 0:13Speaker 1: We call it a Yacht Rock Wednesday. And we're glad
- 0:15Speaker 1: to have you with us to join us here on
- 0:18Speaker 1: Sports Radio AM 13 under the zone. Good afternoon, everybody.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Welcome to the program. My name is Craig Way. Thanks
- 0:24Speaker 1: so much for joining us on this Yacht Rock Wednesday.
- 0:28Speaker 1: The producer is Jay Kerman. He joins us alongside. Let
- 0:32Speaker 1: me tell you what's coming up here. We're going to
- 0:33Speaker 1: hear from a Longhorns head coach, Steve Sarkeesian here in
- 0:35Speaker 1: just a moment. A couple of thoughts from him from
- 0:37Speaker 1: SC from today's SEC teleconference, uh, at, uh, in, in
- 0:43Speaker 1: about 15 minutes from now, we'll talk about this matchup,
- 0:47Speaker 1: Texas and Mississippi state, uh, with Neil price play by
- 0:50Speaker 1: play voice of the Mississippi state Bulldogs.
- 0:52Speaker 2: So, uh, Neil will join us coming up in a
- 0:55Speaker 2: few minutes for that.
- 0:56Speaker 1: We do have inconceivable, uh, a little bit later on
- 0:59Speaker 1: this hour, you know, uh, Jake is always amused by
- 1:04Speaker 1: the fact that I am not amused by self-styled TikTok.
- 1:09Speaker 2: Influencers or that phrase influencers.
- 1:14Speaker 1: We have an example in Inconceivable about how being a
- 1:18Speaker 1: quote unquote, and I'm using air quotes here, influencer can
- 1:23Speaker 1: basically just be another term for jackass or the words
- 1:29Speaker 1: of it being the actions being jackassery. So that's coming
- 1:36Speaker 1: up at Inconceivable. We'll have that. In addition to hearing
- 1:40Speaker 1: from Longhorn's head coach, Steve Sarkeesian, we're going to hear
- 1:43Speaker 1: from Jeff Lebby, the head coach of the Mississippi State
- 1:45Speaker 1: Bulldogs today. That also from the SEC teleconference. And we're
- 1:50Speaker 1: going to hear from Brian Schottenheimer, the Cowboys head coach.
- 1:53Speaker 1: We'll hear as well from the head coach of the
- 1:57Speaker 1: Houston Texans, D'Amico Rines, as they try to get things
- 2:01Speaker 1: turned back around again. And then there's baseball, because we
- 2:06Speaker 1: had a dramatic walk-off ending to Game 4 of the
- 2:10Speaker 1: World Series last night.
- 2:11Speaker 2: And for once, the.
- 2:12Speaker 1: Dramatic walk-off wasn't authored by the Milwaukee Brewers. At least
- 2:15Speaker 1: it didn't go on the plus side for them. It
- 2:17Speaker 1: happened for the Tampa Bay Rays to get them their
- 2:20Speaker 1: first win in the series. Milwaukee's still one win away
- 2:22Speaker 1: from winning the whole thing. They're up three games to one,
- 2:24Speaker 1: and they could clinch it tonight having their ace, Jacob Mizorowski,
- 2:28Speaker 1: on the mound tonight. but some drama that got Tampa
- 2:31Speaker 1: Bay its first win. So we'll recap that as well
- 2:34Speaker 1: coming up. Jake, yesterday, you got results in from your allergist.
- 2:40Speaker 1: Were you able to sift through it and find out exactly,
- 2:44Speaker 1: just exactly what you're allergic to and- What you may
- 2:47Speaker 1: have outgrown?
- 2:48Speaker 3: Well, look, Craig, these, first of all, good afternoon.
- 2:51Speaker 4: Second, these blood tests for allergies.
- 2:53Speaker 1: Because they can't do scratch tests for you because you
- 2:56Speaker 1: get hives, right?
- 2:57Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 2:58Speaker 4: It's kind of a, yeah, what they call a complicated case.
- 3:01Speaker 4: It would be all positive if I stopped taking my medicine.
- 3:04Speaker 4: It would be all negative if I continued to. So
- 3:07Speaker 4: we're not going that route. It's not an exact science
- 3:10Speaker 4: on this. Nothing on my allergy test result really shocked me.
- 3:14Speaker 4: I've got a bunch of low allergies. Some of my shellfish,
- 3:17Speaker 4: my shrimp, my crab, clam, lobster, all that.
- 3:20Speaker 3: It's pretty low.
- 3:22Speaker 4: So once I get to talk with my allergist again,
- 3:24Speaker 4: we're going to figure out if I'm going to do
- 3:26Speaker 4: what's called a challenge. And that, you're going to love this.
- 3:29Speaker 4: I get to go into the office. We talked about
- 3:31Speaker 4: this and just eat small amounts. What a time ramping
- 3:34Speaker 4: up over the course of, I think it's two hours.
- 3:36Speaker 4: Does it see if you blow up like a balloon
- 3:38Speaker 4: or something?
- 3:39Speaker 2: How does that work?
- 3:40Speaker 3: I mean, I would hope that doesn't happen.
- 3:41Speaker 4: But if it does, I would be in the safe,
- 3:44Speaker 4: controlled environment with tons of EpiPens around to stab me with.
- 3:48Speaker 6: Okay.
- 3:48Speaker 7: All right. That's good.
- 3:49Speaker 3: Hope it doesn't come to that.
- 3:51Speaker 2: Right, right, right.
- 3:52Speaker 1: All right.
- 3:52Speaker 2: So that's good.
- 3:53Speaker 4: We'll find out what the plan of action is. And
- 3:55Speaker 4: some of the tree nut stuff is still, I'm still
- 3:57Speaker 4: allergic to most nuts.
- 3:59Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 4:00Speaker 8: Right.
- 4:01Speaker 7: Okay.
- 4:01Speaker 3: All right.
- 4:02Speaker 2: Well, and which end products of, like peanut butter.
- 4:06Speaker 3: Yeah, that'll count.
- 4:08Speaker 7: Okay.
- 4:08Speaker 1: All right.
- 4:09Speaker 3: It falls under the definition of targeting.
- 4:12Speaker 2: Okay.
- 4:13Speaker 9: All right.
- 4:13Speaker 4: So, good.
- 4:14Speaker 1: Glad to hear maybe there's some hope on the horizon
- 4:17Speaker 1: and all that stuff.
- 4:19Speaker 4: Yeah, we could be trying shrimp for the first time
- 4:21Speaker 4: pretty soon.
- 4:22Speaker 1: Wow.
- 4:23Speaker 2: Imagine that. It's one of my favorites, too.
- 4:25Speaker 7: Okay.
- 4:27Speaker 1: Let's start off with the SEC teleconference. Now, again, you've
- 4:31Speaker 1: heard me explain this before, and I'll continue to explain it,
- 4:35Speaker 1: and I'll explain it again. Steve Sarkeesian takes part in usually, okay,
- 4:43Speaker 1: usually a total of two during-the-week media availabilities independent of
- 4:51Speaker 1: the post-game stuff after games. And those consist of his
- 4:59Speaker 1: Monday weekly press conference, which we broadcast live at 1130
- 5:03Speaker 1: on Monday mornings as part of our Longhorns Monday coverage,
- 5:06Speaker 1: which begins at 11 o'clock in the morning on Monday.
- 5:10Speaker 1: So our coverage begins at 11 here on The Zone.
- 5:14Speaker 1: And then at 1130, it'll be Coach Sark.
- 5:18Speaker 2: In the news conference. So we do that.
- 5:21Speaker 1: On Thursdays, and this will be the case tomorrow, he
- 5:24Speaker 1: has his weekly media Zoom.
- 5:27Speaker 2: And that's with local and regional media.
- 5:30Speaker 1: And I know a lot of people, because I've seen
- 5:31Speaker 1: it on social media, ask, you know, why do we
- 5:33Speaker 1: have to hear from him so much during the week?
- 5:35Speaker 2: You don't have to. You're not required or.
- 5:38Speaker 1: compelled to watch the news conferences or listen to the
- 5:42Speaker 1: news conferences.
- 5:43Speaker 2: You're certainly under no obligation to do any of that.
- 5:46Speaker 1: But there is an obligation from the athletic department, just
- 5:49Speaker 1: as it is all across the country with college athletics,
- 5:53Speaker 1: to talk about the team and players who are available
- 5:58Speaker 1: and so on and so forth and the opponents that
- 6:01Speaker 1: they face.
- 6:01Speaker 2: And so they do this, you.
- 6:03Speaker 1: Know, extrapolated out a couple of times during the week
- 6:05Speaker 1: and And so he does that with the Thursday media Zoom.
- 6:10Speaker 1: That's his last contact with the media until after the
- 6:13Speaker 1: football game, the post-game press conference. Now, I do an
- 6:17Speaker 1: interview with him on the field about an hour 45
- 6:20Speaker 1: before kick. That's the last visiting he does right before
- 6:24Speaker 1: it starts, before the game starts. But then for the
- 6:27Speaker 1: assembled media at large, it's not until after the game.
- 6:32Speaker 1: But he does one other one every few weeks, and
- 6:35Speaker 1: that's the SEC teleconference. And again, the genesis of that
- 6:39Speaker 1: goes back to the days when you would actually dial
- 6:41Speaker 1: in on the phone to something, you'd roll your tape recorders,
- 6:43Speaker 1: and they'd get the different coaches on the phone on
- 6:46Speaker 1: a conference call, and they would do it. They've moved
- 6:48Speaker 1: beyond that now. They use Zoom, and it sounds a
- 6:51Speaker 1: lot better, but they still call it the teleconference. And
- 6:53Speaker 1: so they do one of those about every three weeks.
- 6:57Speaker 1: The last one they had was before the OU game.
- 6:59Speaker 1: And so now they've got one. They had one today
- 7:02Speaker 1: in advance of the games of this week. So we'll
- 7:05Speaker 1: hear from Sark. In fact, we'll hear right now. I
- 7:08Speaker 1: was asked for some opening. They had a little bit
- 7:09Speaker 1: of trouble with the connection thing at first, but then
- 7:11Speaker 1: they got it and asked him for opening comments.
- 7:13Speaker 6: You know, obviously our third consecutive home game, Saturday night,
- 7:18Speaker 6: Halloween night. Obviously DKR has been very good to us.
- 7:22Speaker 6: I think four of our last, four of our seven
- 7:25Speaker 6: highest games crowds we've ever had have occurred this season.
- 7:29Speaker 6: So love our fans, love the support, looking forward to
- 7:32Speaker 6: another opportunity playing in front of them.
- 7:34Speaker 1: Okay, next he was asked, and the phrase was used
- 7:39Speaker 1: about Raheem Biles and Justin Cryer playing what were termed
- 7:46Speaker 1: astronomical snaps, minutes in the games overall, and how much
- 7:53Speaker 1: they played.
- 7:53Speaker 2: He was asked about how they've held up.
- 7:55Speaker 6: I'm not sure what quantifies astronomical. I know these guys
- 7:59Speaker 6: play and they play well. We've been in tight games
- 8:01Speaker 6: and we put our best players out there to help
- 8:03Speaker 6: contribute us to success. They're playing really good football for us.
- 8:07Speaker 6: I think they work well off of each other. They've
- 8:09Speaker 6: got good command of the defense. They communicate with the
- 8:12Speaker 6: defensive line, the back end, and they have playmaking ability.
- 8:15Speaker 3: So we're fortunate to have them both.
- 8:18Speaker 2: Okay.
- 8:18Speaker 1: We're going to hear more from Sark and hear him
- 8:20Speaker 1: talk about Mississippi State as well coming up.
- 8:22Speaker 2: But up next.
- 8:24Speaker 1: We'll visit with a play-by-play voice.
- 8:26Speaker 2: Of the Mississippi State Bulldogs. That's Neil Price.
- 8:28Speaker 1: We'll do that when we continue here on a Yacht
- 8:30Speaker 1: Rock Wednesday on Sports Radio AM 13 Under the Zone
- 8:32Speaker 1: and the IR Radio app. It's a Yacht Rock Wednesday
- 8:46Speaker 1: here on Sports Radio AM 13 Under the Zone. That
- 8:49Speaker 1: particular piece from the immortal Chuck Mangione was... The theme
- 8:53Speaker 1: from Cannonball Run. Now, Mississippi State Bulldogs, they're not going
- 8:59Speaker 1: to make a run over to Austin. They're going to
- 9:00Speaker 1: make a flight over to Austin to play Saturday night's
- 9:04Speaker 1: 630 game. One of my favorites, great guy and outstanding
- 9:08Speaker 1: play-by-play voice, the Mississippi State Bulldogs, who we learned back
- 9:12Speaker 1: in August, is also a fan of Yacht Rock Radio.
- 9:14Speaker 1: That's our old friend, Neal Price. I did remember that correctly,
- 9:18Speaker 1: didn't I, Neal?
- 9:19Speaker 7: You did.
- 9:20Speaker 9: And let me ask you this question. So you mentioned
- 9:22Speaker 9: Chuck Mangione there.
- 9:24Speaker 2: Yes.
- 9:24Speaker 9: So that was the theme of the Cannonball Run. There's
- 9:27Speaker 9: an alternate theme to that movie. Do you know who
- 9:29Speaker 9: recorded that song, words and music?
- 9:31Speaker 4: No.
- 9:32Speaker 2: Help me.
- 9:33Speaker 3: Ray Stevens.
- 9:34Speaker 1: Wow.
- 9:35Speaker 3: As in the streak and everything is.
- 9:37Speaker 2: Beautiful and all that stuff.
- 9:39Speaker 8: Yep.
- 9:40Speaker 9: Look that one up at some point. And what a
- 9:42Speaker 9: great movie, by the way. The world needs more Cannonball
- 9:46Speaker 9: Run and Smokey and the Bandit. We need more fun, mindless.
- 9:50Speaker 3: Yes, we need more fun, mindless movies.
- 9:53Speaker 7: We do.
- 9:53Speaker 1: I'm with you. Especially in today's day in society. I
- 9:58Speaker 1: totally agree with you. Hey, I appreciate you doing this.
- 10:02Speaker 2: And I know.
- 10:04Speaker 1: What it really started off was a pretty exciting start
- 10:07Speaker 1: with the 4-0 start and a really impressive road win
- 10:10Speaker 1: up in Minneapolis and all that stuff. And I know
- 10:13Speaker 1: it's taken an unfortunate turn because of the rash of injuries.
- 10:15Speaker 1: Everybody's got injuries, but, you know, and Texas is having
- 10:19Speaker 1: to deal with it now with Colin Simmons and then
- 10:22Speaker 1: losing Trevor Goosby for the entire rest of the regular season,
- 10:25Speaker 1: their best offensive lineman.
- 10:27Speaker 2: But when you lose your number one quarterback, when you.
- 10:29Speaker 1: Lose a guy of the talent skill of Kamario Taylor...
- 10:33Speaker 1: you know you've really taken a blow. And so I
- 10:36Speaker 1: was not surprised at all, Neal, and I bet you
- 10:38Speaker 1: weren't either, on the SEC teleconference to hear reporters asking
- 10:43Speaker 1: Jeff Levy how the team is handling this, because that's
- 10:46Speaker 1: quite a blow, isn't it?
- 10:47Speaker 3: Yeah, it's huge.
- 10:48Speaker 9: And I mean, it doesn't matter if you're talking about
- 10:50Speaker 9: college football, you're talking about the NFL, if you're talking
- 10:53Speaker 9: about your favorite high school team. I mean, that is
- 10:55Speaker 9: the one position where it's just tough to overcome the
- 11:00Speaker 9: an injury. It really is because you, you give so
- 11:03Speaker 9: many reps in practice weekend and week out to that
- 11:07Speaker 9: one guy, because that's, who's going to have to be
- 11:09Speaker 9: your primary decision maker. Now the locker rooms had some time,
- 11:13Speaker 9: I think to prepare for this, the finality of it.
- 11:16Speaker 7: Sure.
- 11:16Speaker 9: That's going to sting, but they didn't have Camario at LSU.
- 11:20Speaker 9: They didn't have fluff Bothwell. They're starting running back at
- 11:24Speaker 9: LSU and they had to find a way. So I
- 11:26Speaker 9: think just what I've been around the team, uh, The
- 11:29Speaker 9: attitude's good. I think they're going to embrace this mentality
- 11:33Speaker 9: of next man up. And they kind of know what
- 11:35Speaker 9: they're getting with Billy Puckett if he winds up winning
- 11:38Speaker 9: this battle this week with A.J.
- 11:41Speaker 2: Swan.
- 11:41Speaker 9: I don't think that they have a good idea of
- 11:45Speaker 9: what A.J. Swan could be because they just haven't seen
- 11:48Speaker 9: enough body of work yet because he was banged up
- 11:51Speaker 9: in the spring. and then came back out in training
- 11:54Speaker 9: camp in August and was banged up again. So I
- 11:57Speaker 9: don't know if anybody has a great idea other than
- 12:00Speaker 9: what they saw at Vanderbilt, what they saw at LSU,
- 12:03Speaker 9: what they saw at Appalachian State. I don't know they
- 12:06Speaker 9: have a great idea of what they're getting there, but
- 12:08Speaker 9: they do know they at least have one person in
- 12:11Speaker 9: that room that if he can win the job this
- 12:13Speaker 9: week has been in an SEC game and understands kind
- 12:17Speaker 9: of how it's different.
- 12:19Speaker 3: Compared to other games that you play in college football.
- 12:21Speaker 2: Yeah, no doubt about it.
- 12:22Speaker 1: So in other words, what you're saying, if Will Muschamp
- 12:25Speaker 1: and the defensive staff wanted to really do the deep
- 12:29Speaker 1: dive and hunker down on A.J. Swann, they got to
- 12:32Speaker 1: look at him suiting up for the Appalachian State Mountaineers, right?
- 12:35Speaker 3: Yeah, that's where he started the most games.
- 12:38Speaker 9: I think six starts, seven games played before the injury
- 12:42Speaker 9: that wound up sidelining him the rest of his career there.
- 12:45Speaker 9: And ultimately, open the door for him to transfer to
- 12:48Speaker 9: Starkville in January of this year. But yeah, you'd have
- 12:51Speaker 9: to go back to find some time because he hasn't
- 12:53Speaker 9: played in a game since he's been here.
- 12:56Speaker 7: And I know.
- 12:57Speaker 9: That they're excited, the staff is, about the potential he
- 13:00Speaker 9: could have. That's the reason they wanted him here is
- 13:02Speaker 9: because he had that depth of experience. But when you
- 13:07Speaker 9: haven't been in a situation where you got live reps,
- 13:10Speaker 9: There's an adjustment.
- 13:11Speaker 3: I don't care how many times you played. And that's
- 13:13Speaker 3: the thing.
- 13:13Speaker 9: If he comes out of this thing as a winner
- 13:14Speaker 9: this week with Billy Puckett, then he's going to have
- 13:17Speaker 9: to adjust. And if it's Billy, he's going to have
- 13:20Speaker 9: to continue to learn that the game is much faster
- 13:23Speaker 9: than it comes to you in practice week in and
- 13:25Speaker 9: week out.
- 13:26Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 13:27Speaker 1: And Sark mentioned on the SEC teleconference that whoever was
- 13:31Speaker 1: taking the snaps, he said, it's still Jeff Levy's system.
- 13:34Speaker 1: and the speed on the edges and everything else that
- 13:37Speaker 1: they do. So, you know, depending, you know, however folks
- 13:41Speaker 1: want to look at the individual skill sets of those
- 13:43Speaker 1: two guys, you know, they're still operating within the system,
- 13:48Speaker 1: aren't they? And trying to make this up-tempo offense really
- 13:52Speaker 1: work for Coach Levy.
- 13:54Speaker 9: Yeah, and they didn't change a ton with regard to
- 13:57Speaker 9: their operation against Oklahoma last week. You know, they want
- 14:01Speaker 9: to play fast. I don't know if they're going to
- 14:03Speaker 9: snap it every time with somewhere between 27 and 30
- 14:07Speaker 9: on the play clock, but they're not going to sub
- 14:10Speaker 9: a ton. They're going to force defenses to keep those
- 14:13Speaker 9: same personnel groupings on the field as much as they can.
- 14:16Speaker 9: And I think the biggest change now, Craig, is that
- 14:20Speaker 9: the run game, which has always been important, becomes even
- 14:24Speaker 9: more so now for Mississippi State because they've got to
- 14:27Speaker 9: lean on Fluff Bothwell and they've got to lean on
- 14:29Speaker 9: Colin Wilson and that offensive line to try and put
- 14:32Speaker 9: them in favorable situations on third down against a really
- 14:36Speaker 9: good pass rush to try and keep Texas honest defensively.
- 14:41Speaker 1: Yeah, I love the story you told me. I'm going
- 14:43Speaker 1: to let you tell it now. I'll tell it again
- 14:46Speaker 1: on the air on Saturday about Billy Puckett and why
- 14:52Speaker 1: he's called Billy, even though that's not his name.
- 14:55Speaker 9: Yeah, so he's not a very big guy. So when
- 14:57Speaker 9: I tell this story, everybody's going to think they're getting
- 14:59Speaker 9: a different physical specimen than what could walk out there
- 15:02Speaker 9: on Saturday. But Parker Puckett, Parker Billy Puckett played on
- 15:08Speaker 9: a little league baseball team growing up that was full
- 15:11Speaker 9: of guys named Parker. So everybody had to have a
- 15:14Speaker 9: nickname of some kind to kind of separate themselves. So
- 15:17Speaker 9: Parker's dad suggested to his coach, hey, call him Billy. Billy, yeah,
- 15:22Speaker 9: what's that got to do with anything? Well, he eats
- 15:24Speaker 9: like a Billy goat. So he said, may as well
- 15:25Speaker 9: just call him Billy. And that's where it stuck. So
- 15:28Speaker 9: he's been Billy Puckett, you know, ever since. And listen,
- 15:31Speaker 9: I'll give him this. He is fearless. You know, here's
- 15:35Speaker 9: a guy who came in from Jackson Prep in the
- 15:38Speaker 9: state capitol, played for a really successful private school program
- 15:42Speaker 9: in this state, won a state title, and he gets
- 15:45Speaker 9: thrown into the lion's den at LSU, one of the
- 15:48Speaker 9: toughest places, I think, to play in this league, one
- 15:51Speaker 9: of the toughest places to play in America, and just
- 15:54Speaker 9: goes out there and says, sure, yeah, let's go. You know,
- 15:57Speaker 9: I think if you're him, and for that fact, if
- 15:59Speaker 9: it's A.J. Swann, What do you have to lose? Go
- 16:02Speaker 9: out there and let it rip and just see what happens.
- 16:04Speaker 9: And if you get in rhythm and you get some confidence,
- 16:08Speaker 9: then build on it.
- 16:10Speaker 3: That's the thing.
- 16:10Speaker 9: I don't know that anybody in the country expects these
- 16:13Speaker 9: guys to be Camario Taylor. That'd be incredibly unfair if
- 16:16Speaker 9: they did. But I think they just need to go
- 16:19Speaker 9: out and play fast and loose and see if they
- 16:20Speaker 9: can't make something happen.
- 16:21Speaker 1: Well, one guy I know you had to have been
- 16:24Speaker 1: impressed with, and I saw him as a converse Judson
- 16:28Speaker 1: Rocket in high school, and of course he transferred, and
- 16:30Speaker 1: we saw him playing for Georgia, and that's Anthony Evans
- 16:33Speaker 1: and what he's been able to do for you.
- 16:35Speaker 9: Yeah, and you know, the fact that somehow, since he
- 16:39Speaker 9: has become the number one guy in that wide receiver room,
- 16:43Speaker 9: the fact that He is at the top of the
- 16:45Speaker 9: scouting report for everybody and somehow still finds a way
- 16:47Speaker 9: to be productive. I think speaks volumes about his work
- 16:51Speaker 9: ethic and his want to. He came into the year, Craig,
- 16:56Speaker 9: and was incredibly confident and was asked in the final
- 17:00Speaker 9: weeks of camp, what's your goal for this year? And
- 17:04Speaker 9: he said, personally, I want to break Brennan Thompson's single
- 17:08Speaker 9: season receiving record. He's well over halfway there. He is
- 17:13Speaker 9: up among the tops in the league in terms of
- 17:15Speaker 9: yards per catch. He's up among the tops in the
- 17:17Speaker 9: league with regard to receiving yards. And he has been
- 17:21Speaker 9: a guy who's drawn a lot of attention every week,
- 17:23Speaker 9: and he's had to do it the tough way, playing
- 17:25Speaker 9: in the slot, making contested catches over the middle or
- 17:28Speaker 9: taking shots after you make catches. But he finds ways
- 17:31Speaker 9: to get yards after contact. He's sure-handed. He has been fantastic.
- 17:37Speaker 9: So he's an easy guy to root for. in that
- 17:40Speaker 9: way because you know what he's putting into it week
- 17:43Speaker 9: in and week out.
- 17:44Speaker 1: You brought up Fluff Bothwell, and we saw him last year,
- 17:46Speaker 1: and he had been banged up some, and he came
- 17:48Speaker 1: in and still did some good things, obviously, in that ballgame,
- 17:51Speaker 1: the overtime game a year ago. He's listed as 5'10
- 17:55Speaker 1: and 230, and that would tend people to believe, man,
- 18:01Speaker 1: he's like a truck, and.
- 18:03Speaker 2: He comes in. Is that an accurate way to describe him?
- 18:06Speaker 3: Yeah, he's a bowling ball.
- 18:08Speaker 9: And how Jeff Lebby has described him is he's the
- 18:11Speaker 9: guy on state's offense who helps dictate the terms of
- 18:14Speaker 9: the fistfight. It's that kind of toughness with the way
- 18:17Speaker 9: that they expect him to run the ball. Last week,
- 18:21Speaker 9: when he got back in the game, although on a
- 18:24Speaker 9: limited number of snaps against Oklahoma, you could see that
- 18:27Speaker 9: entire offense pick up. You could see that offensive line
- 18:31Speaker 9: pick up when he came in the game. And Cannon Boone,
- 18:34Speaker 9: who's been the anchor of State's O-line at center, he
- 18:37Speaker 9: has said as much that when Fluff's in the game,
- 18:40Speaker 9: that those guys want to block harder. They want to
- 18:42Speaker 9: play better because they know how hard he's going to
- 18:44Speaker 9: run the ball. So they want to make sure that
- 18:46Speaker 9: they help him maximize every yard that he can get. So, yeah,
- 18:50Speaker 9: he is a physical back. but when he gets in
- 18:52Speaker 9: the open field he's got a burst you know so
- 18:55Speaker 9: um clearly the number one guy in that room and
- 18:58Speaker 9: a guy that is so much more important now that
- 19:02Speaker 9: state doesn't have camario taylor moving forward.
- 19:05Speaker 1: Uh talking about the mississippi state bulldogs with their play-by-play
- 19:08Speaker 1: voice neil price here on 13 under the zone let
- 19:10Speaker 1: me shift over to the defense and pick up where
- 19:11Speaker 1: we left off about injuries right because there's been a
- 19:14Speaker 1: there's been a parcel of those that have really affected
- 19:17Speaker 1: the bulldogs right starting on the defensive front.
- 19:18Speaker 9: Right Yeah, and you know, Jeff Lebby kind of explained
- 19:21Speaker 9: it to me this way last week, and I don't
- 19:23Speaker 9: know that I'd ever really thought about drawing this comparison,
- 19:26Speaker 9: but once he did, the light came on for me.
- 19:29Speaker 9: So in baseball, you want to be good up the
- 19:32Speaker 9: middle defensively, right? You want a great catcher. You want
- 19:34Speaker 9: two great middle infielders. You want a great center fielder.
- 19:37Speaker 9: State's down two interior defensive linemen for the year. It's
- 19:41Speaker 9: down at starting middle linebacker, the green dot guy who
- 19:44Speaker 9: gets the call, gets your defense organized. And last week
- 19:48Speaker 9: did not have its starting nickels. Isaac Smith, who's played
- 19:52Speaker 9: a ton of football here over the last four years. Well,
- 19:56Speaker 9: when you look at that, it's four guys compared to
- 19:59Speaker 9: however many they've got listed on that side of the ball, but.
- 20:02Speaker 3: Four really important ones.
- 20:04Speaker 9: And now you're leaning on a lot of young people
- 20:07Speaker 9: or new people to to come in and get your
- 20:09Speaker 9: defense organized. I think that showed up some last week
- 20:13Speaker 9: with some of the big plays, the bust that happened
- 20:15Speaker 9: in the game against Oklahoma that allowed Isaiah Cetania to
- 20:19Speaker 9: have such a big day for the Sooners. They've got
- 20:23Speaker 9: to find a way, hopefully, to get Isaac Smith back
- 20:25Speaker 9: this week. And if they do, that gives them a
- 20:27Speaker 9: leader at the back who can at least help them
- 20:30Speaker 9: get lined up where they need to be, communicate, do
- 20:33Speaker 9: all the things that don't always show up with regard
- 20:35Speaker 9: to what happens physically between the lines. And then Daylon
- 20:40Speaker 9: Evans is getting healthier. He was limited by snaps last week,
- 20:43Speaker 9: but a guy that's been helping him out, Jarray Bledsoe,
- 20:46Speaker 9: has been really good in the interior of that defensive line.
- 20:49Speaker 9: And they've got to have big performances from Williams and
- 20:52Speaker 9: from Whitson out on the edge to try and see
- 20:54Speaker 9: if they can move Arch Manning off the spot a
- 20:56Speaker 9: little bit and force him into trying to make a mistake.
- 20:59Speaker 1: I was going to ask you about DeRay Bledsoe. I'm
- 21:01Speaker 1: sure Longhorn fans go, oh, yeah, I remember him. He
- 21:03Speaker 1: played in Texas. He was kind of an anomaly because,
- 21:07Speaker 1: you know, it's not often that Texas will take a
- 21:09Speaker 1: player from a 3A school. And yet he was all
- 21:12Speaker 1: world when he played at Marlin there in the Super Centex.
- 21:15Speaker 1: And then, you know, got caught in the numbers game
- 21:17Speaker 1: and things like that. But it looks like he's really
- 21:19Speaker 1: found his footing and has done really well there for
- 21:22Speaker 1: the Bulldogs.
- 21:23Speaker 9: You can see his athleticism. You can see why he
- 21:26Speaker 9: was a high-level recruit even to come out of a
- 21:28Speaker 9: smaller school. Travion Williams, one of his teammates who's on
- 21:32Speaker 9: the shelf for the rest of the year, calls him
- 21:34Speaker 9: the rubber band man because of the way he's able
- 21:37Speaker 9: to move and the things he can do. He's on
- 21:39Speaker 9: Bruce Feldman's freaks list because of the combo of speed
- 21:42Speaker 9: and agility that he's got playing in the interior line.
- 21:45Speaker 9: He's been a huge piece for State, and his role
- 21:48Speaker 9: certainly has become more magnified, too.
- 21:50Speaker 3: With all the injuries.
- 21:51Speaker 9: He's playing more snaps maybe than he should be at
- 21:54Speaker 9: this point with regard to not being able to get
- 21:56Speaker 9: a break. But I know they're glad to have him.
- 21:59Speaker 9: And certainly a guy who has shown up in a big,
- 22:02Speaker 9: big way and has stepped up as a leader on
- 22:04Speaker 9: that defensive front for State.
- 22:06Speaker 1: Talking about the Bulldogs here with Neil Price, I got
- 22:10Speaker 1: to get you to tell another nickname story. The middle linebacker,
- 22:14Speaker 1: you know, I'm looking at the, I'm putting together the
- 22:16Speaker 1: broadcast charts and I look and I see the middle linebacker,
- 22:19Speaker 1: the Mike linebacker, His last name is Forrest. His first name, Fat, F-A-T-T, Fat.
- 22:26Speaker 1: I thought, is that really his name? And you said
- 22:27Speaker 1: there's a story behind that.
- 22:29Speaker 7: There is.
- 22:31Speaker 9: All the great names typically have a story, don't they?
- 22:34Speaker 9: Fat Forrest's name, his given name is Frederick. And the
- 22:39Speaker 9: story or the legend is that he was always fat.
- 22:43Speaker 9: He was a chunky kid growing up, and everybody in
- 22:47Speaker 9: the family called him Fat. And he went to school
- 22:51Speaker 9: and they asked if Frederick Forrest was present. And he
- 22:56Speaker 9: just kind of sat there. And, you know, they finally,
- 22:59Speaker 9: they come over and say, that's.
- 23:01Speaker 3: You, you're Frederick. No, I'm fat. I'm fat.
- 23:03Speaker 9: I'm not Frederick. I'm fat Forrest, not Frederick Forrest, but
- 23:06Speaker 9: that's his name. And I thought, you know, what a
- 23:08Speaker 9: great story. But here's a guy too, that, you know,
- 23:11Speaker 9: came in here and was limited last year. They kept
- 23:14Speaker 9: the red shirt on him. So they only got to
- 23:16Speaker 9: play in four games last season. And then with, Zachary
- 23:20Speaker 9: Tillman kind of being in and out at linebacker this
- 23:23Speaker 9: year with the injuries and stuff that's just lingered since
- 23:26Speaker 9: training camp. He's had to play more as guys have
- 23:29Speaker 9: gotten hurt and he's coming off a 10 tackle game
- 23:32Speaker 9: against Oklahoma season high for him last week. And I
- 23:35Speaker 9: think it's starting to figure it out. You can see
- 23:37Speaker 9: the light come on, but still really, really raw with
- 23:41Speaker 9: regard to playing at this level. So there's some trial
- 23:44Speaker 9: by fire in there too, but he and Tyler Lockhart
- 23:47Speaker 9: are the two guys who play the, the bulk of
- 23:49Speaker 9: the snaps at linebacker right now and both those guys
- 23:52Speaker 9: played together at winona high school uh just out the
- 23:56Speaker 9: road about an hour hour and 15 minutes from starkville
- 23:59Speaker 9: and won a state championship together back in 2023 so
- 24:02Speaker 9: it's been a pretty cool story to see the two
- 24:04Speaker 9: of them together and now trying to find some success
- 24:08Speaker 9: here at the at the highest level of college football.
- 24:10Speaker 1: One more thing i wanted to ask you uh on
- 24:12Speaker 1: the sec teleconference today uh jeff levy said We still
- 24:17Speaker 1: have things to play for. And he didn't necessarily refer
- 24:20Speaker 1: to the conference championship. Who knows who's going to be
- 24:22Speaker 1: playing in the conference championship at this point right now?
- 24:25Speaker 1: I think I saw a thing on The Athletic that
- 24:26Speaker 1: said there could be a five- or six-way tie with
- 24:30Speaker 1: schools that are nine and three overall. And what's the
- 24:33Speaker 1: playoff committee going to do if that happens? You know,
- 24:35Speaker 1: all of that kind of business.
- 24:37Speaker 3: Kentucky is the front runner, by the way.
- 24:39Speaker 2: How about that?
- 24:40Speaker 3: How about that?
- 24:40Speaker 2: Your old stomping grounds.
- 24:41Speaker 7: How about that?
- 24:42Speaker 3: How about that?
- 24:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 24:44Speaker 1: But he made the point in that there's still things
- 24:47Speaker 1: to play for. You look at the schedule. I think
- 24:50Speaker 1: that all of the games certainly are winnable games for them.
- 24:53Speaker 1: So is the goal is... you know, each game as
- 24:56Speaker 1: it comes? Is it, hey, we can get on a
- 24:58Speaker 1: roll here, A, get bowl eligible, and B, see where
- 25:01Speaker 1: it leads us from there? Is there kind of a
- 25:04Speaker 1: thought process on what is indeed still out there for
- 25:07Speaker 1: the Bulldogs?
- 25:08Speaker 9: I'm sure there is, but being around Jeff Levy for
- 25:12Speaker 9: going on three years now, I will tell you if
- 25:14Speaker 9: you ask him, he will say the most important thing
- 25:17Speaker 9: for Mississippi State this week is Texas. That's the thing
- 25:21Speaker 9: that's immediately in front of him. It's the most important
- 25:23Speaker 9: game because it's the next game. Now, I'm not a coach.
- 25:27Speaker 9: I can look at it from a little bit wider
- 25:29Speaker 9: lens here. I think that given the situation that State's
- 25:34Speaker 9: been in with injuries on both sides of the ball,
- 25:37Speaker 9: if it can find a way to win two more
- 25:40Speaker 9: games coming down the stretch, be bowl eligible. Again, if
- 25:44Speaker 9: it can sort out this quarterback situation and get one
- 25:48Speaker 9: of these two backup guys in a position where they
- 25:51Speaker 9: feel like they have a serviceable quarterback, then I think
- 25:55Speaker 9: there's a lot on the table. Bowl eligibility being one
- 25:58Speaker 9: and then just having a successful finish because after today
- 26:02Speaker 9: or after Saturday, State plays three of its final four
- 26:06Speaker 9: games at home. They're home, basically, and they don't leave
- 26:09Speaker 9: the state of Mississippi in the month of November. So
- 26:11Speaker 9: the schedule lines up in such a way that at
- 26:14Speaker 9: least you know you're sleeping in your own bed, you're
- 26:16Speaker 9: playing in front of your own folks, and you feel
- 26:19Speaker 9: like it gives you a little added edge or opportunity
- 26:23Speaker 9: to find success. So I think there's absolutely plenty to
- 26:28Speaker 9: play for. There's absolutely that. And they went to a
- 26:31Speaker 9: bowl game last year with five wins. If they can
- 26:33Speaker 9: find a way to earn their way in with six
- 26:35Speaker 9: this year and you have any kind of, if you
- 26:39Speaker 9: can look at it through any kind of objective lens
- 26:42Speaker 9: and see what they've gone through, if they get into
- 26:45Speaker 9: a bowl, earn their way into a bowl game, I
- 26:48Speaker 9: think that's a huge accomplishment for this team.
- 26:50Speaker 2: No doubt about it.
- 26:51Speaker 1: Hey, I appreciate you taking the time to do it,
- 26:54Speaker 1: and I'll look forward to seeing you on Saturday. We'll
- 26:58Speaker 1: help you out any way we can with regard to
- 27:01Speaker 1: your positioning in the broadcast booth, not the least of
- 27:04Speaker 1: which is the fact is they have good tacos come
- 27:07Speaker 1: in from Taco Deli, so there's that.
- 27:10Speaker 9: Hey, listen, anytime we come to Texas, we eat good.
- 27:14Speaker 9: I've not had a bad meal yet, so.
- 27:18Speaker 3: I'll look forward to that. It's always good talking to you.
- 27:20Speaker 9: I always look forward to being on your show because
- 27:23Speaker 9: I never know what you're going to throw at me musically.
- 27:25Speaker 3: And you didn't disappoint today.
- 27:27Speaker 9: So maybe we can trade some more stories about that
- 27:30Speaker 9: before the game gets going on Saturday.
- 27:31Speaker 2: We'll do that. And then I'll have you back on
- 27:33Speaker 2: during basketball season. We'll try to.
- 27:36Speaker 1: uh, throw you something, uh, throw you a curve ball
- 27:38Speaker 1: on that too. It's like Johnny Carson and Doc Severinsen.
- 27:41Speaker 1: We're playing stump the band. That's what we're doing. Except
- 27:45Speaker 1: I'm being more like Tommy Newman, you know, Johnny Carson,
- 27:47Speaker 1: what's the Tommy Newman was in for, uh, was in
- 27:50Speaker 1: for Doc Severinsen. And he goes, he goes, uh, you know, uh,
- 27:54Speaker 1: Tommy Newman's in, uh, tonight. And, uh, How would you
- 27:56Speaker 1: describe Tommy? Boring is a good word. You know, that
- 28:01Speaker 1: sort of thing.
- 28:02Speaker 9: Doc Severinsen would be out there in a TV test
- 28:05Speaker 9: pattern suit. And on the nights that he was off,
- 28:08Speaker 9: Tommy Newsome would show up. And Tommy was about as
- 28:10Speaker 9: white bread as it got. I mean, it was a
- 28:12Speaker 9: blue blazer, a tie, and a pair of khaki slacks.
- 28:14Speaker 9: But he could play a mean saxophone.
- 28:16Speaker 7: He could.
- 28:17Speaker 1: Hey, Neil, I appreciate it, fella. And I look forward
- 28:20Speaker 1: to seeing you on Saturday. Thanks for joining me.
- 28:22Speaker 7: Thanks, Craig. All right.
- 28:24Speaker 1: That's Neil Price, play-by-play voice of the Mississippi State Bulldogs.
- 28:27Speaker 1: Up next, we bring you Inconceivable here on a Wednesday afternoon,
- 28:30Speaker 1: a Yacht Rock Wednesday on Sports Radio AM 13 Under
- 28:33Speaker 1: the Zone and the iHeartRadio app.
- 28:48Speaker 3: Seymour on two and two.
- 28:50Speaker 7: Sets and throws. And a fly ball to left. It
- 28:53Speaker 7: is back.
- 28:54Speaker 5: And it is gone.
- 28:55Speaker 3: Cooper Pratt gives the.
- 28:58Speaker 10: Brewers the lead in inning number 12. The trap has
- 29:07Speaker 10: turned into Milwaukee South. Pratt with his fourth hit of
- 29:13Speaker 10: the game.
- 29:13Speaker 3: And he exits stage left.
- 29:19Speaker 10: His first career postseason home run.
- 29:23Speaker 3: And the Brewers are in front in inning 12.
- 29:25Speaker 11: 1-2 on its way from Shane Groen.
- 29:30Speaker 3: Swing to ground ball toward the middle.
- 29:31Speaker 7: Skips in the center.
- 29:32Speaker 3: Face hit.
- 29:33Speaker 7: And we're tied.
- 29:35Speaker 3: Mullins comes home. Hicks is at second. The winning run
- 29:39Speaker 3: is in scoring time. position, and there's nobody out in
- 29:42Speaker 3: the 12th inning.
- 29:43Speaker 11: 3-3 game as Johnny DeLuca comes through.
- 29:47Speaker 3: Bases full, none out.
- 29:49Speaker 5: Hitch to Ben.
- 29:51Speaker 3: Swing and a chopper over first, base hit right field.
- 29:54Speaker 12: But it's win in 12, and we'll see you tomorrow.
- 30:05Speaker 3: The Rays get their first win of this World Series,
- 30:08Speaker 3: 4-3 in 12, and they didn't need a single out.
- 30:14Speaker 3: The season's still alive.
- 30:17Speaker 7: Again, in 12, Rays 4, Brewers 3.
- 30:31Speaker 1: That's how it went in game number four, which means
- 30:35Speaker 1: there will be a game number five of the World
- 30:37Speaker 1: Series tonight. As we bring you our number two of
- 30:40Speaker 1: the program here on Sports Radio AM 1300 The Zone,
- 30:42Speaker 1: Jeff Levering on the Brewers Radio Network with the Cooper
- 30:46Speaker 1: Pratt home run that had. Tropicana Field, like he said,
- 30:51Speaker 1: sounded like Milwaukee South. The place was going crazy. They
- 30:53Speaker 1: were three outs away from winning the World Series. But
- 30:58Speaker 1: an error in the bottom of that inning allowed the
- 31:01Speaker 1: leadoff man to get on. And what was it? Four
- 31:06Speaker 1: straight Rays reached. They didn't even record it out, did they?
- 31:10Speaker 3: No, they didn't.
- 31:10Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 31:11Speaker 1: Four straight Rays reached and got the two runs home.
- 31:13Speaker 1: And you heard that. Who was from the Rays radio network?
- 31:16Speaker 3: That is Neil Solins who had that inning.
- 31:19Speaker 1: Neil Solins had that one. So it's now three games
- 31:24Speaker 1: to one. The Brewers on top of the Rays. Rays
- 31:30Speaker 1: manager Kevin Cash was asked, what did that rally down
- 31:34Speaker 1: the run, your last about of the season, if you
- 31:36Speaker 1: don't make it count, what does that rally say about
- 31:39Speaker 1: his team's resolve?
- 31:40Speaker 13: It says a lot about him. I feel like they've
- 31:42Speaker 13: shown that throughout the course of the season. Maybe not
- 31:45Speaker 13: in this actual World Series to date, but we can
- 31:49Speaker 13: start showing a lot more moving forward. Innings like that
- 31:52Speaker 13: can create a lot of momentum for a team that's
- 31:55Speaker 13: a really good team. And I'm glad we had some
- 31:57Speaker 13: things go our way. We've had some things not go
- 32:00Speaker 13: our way. We haven't made the most of some opportunities.
- 32:03Speaker 13: But tonight, it seemed like going down 3-2 right there
- 32:06Speaker 13: in the 12th or whatever it was. that nobody came
- 32:09Speaker 13: in hanging their heads. It was just about how do
- 32:11Speaker 13: we get one across and then how do we get
- 32:13Speaker 13: the second one across?
- 32:14Speaker 1: Well, the second one came across because of Ben Williamson's
- 32:16Speaker 1: pinch hit chopper that hopped over the first base head.
- 32:21Speaker 1: And so it was as did he tell Williamson to
- 32:23Speaker 1: hit the ball like that, a chopper?
- 32:24Speaker 5: That was totally what I told him to do. Good listening.
- 32:31Speaker 1: Tongue may be in cheek there, but what in effect
- 32:34Speaker 1: did he have in terms of his thought process?
- 32:37Speaker 2: And his confidence in Williamson being able to deliver.
- 32:40Speaker 5: I had confidence in all of our guys.
- 32:43Speaker 13: And I think with Ben, you know, that's a tough left-hander,
- 32:47Speaker 13: really tough on left-handed hitters. And Ben is, you know,
- 32:51Speaker 13: elite at making contact. And right there, we're going to
- 32:54Speaker 13: give ourselves the best chance by making contact.
- 32:57Speaker 5: And he was ready to go first pitch. Give Ben credit.
- 33:00Speaker 13: I think he had a helmet on ready to hit
- 33:02Speaker 13: for the last five innings of that ballgame.
- 33:05Speaker 2: Okay.
- 33:05Speaker 1: There was that Pat Murphy, the Brewers skipper, with his
- 33:09Speaker 1: reflections on how game four ultimately ended.
- 33:12Speaker 14: Guys understand it's going to be hard. You know, it's
- 33:14Speaker 14: going to be hard. You're playing the best team in
- 33:16Speaker 14: the American League. They proved it all year long and
- 33:19Speaker 14: they came up big today.
- 33:20Speaker 7: It's going to be hard. You know, it's not.
- 33:26Speaker 14: When you're achieving something like this, it's going to have
- 33:30Speaker 14: its adversity. You know, we had some things go our
- 33:33Speaker 14: way yesterday. They had some things go their way today.
- 33:37Speaker 14: So that's the way it is. You just live with it.
- 33:40Speaker 14: And if you're a competitor, you wake up tomorrow morning,
- 33:43Speaker 14: come ready to play.
- 33:44Speaker 1: Yeah, and he woke up this morning knowing he's got
- 33:46Speaker 1: one of the best, if not the best pitcher in
- 33:48Speaker 1: all of.
- 33:48Speaker 2: Baseball going to the mound for him.
- 33:49Speaker 1: He had having Jacob Mizorowski ready to go and him
- 33:54Speaker 1: beyond him.
- 33:54Speaker 2: How about the pitching plan? It's all hands on deck.
- 33:57Speaker 2: You know, you just you can.
- 34:00Speaker 14: Write it up and hope that they perform like the
- 34:03Speaker 14: best back of their baseball card.
- 34:05Speaker 7: But that doesn't always happen, you know?
- 34:07Speaker 14: So you just, you go with what you, you believe
- 34:10Speaker 14: is the deal.
- 34:11Speaker 7: And, um, you know, I trust our guys.
- 34:14Speaker 14: I trust, you know, they put themselves in position to
- 34:16Speaker 14: win and credit to Tampa for what they did. Just
- 34:20Speaker 14: credit them. Like, look what they did. Um, they put
- 34:23Speaker 14: in play when they needed to. And, um, we, we
- 34:27Speaker 14: drained a lot of pitching as they did. And, um,
- 34:31Speaker 14: That's part of playing a tight ball game.
- 34:32Speaker 2: That's part of it. Okay.
- 34:33Speaker 1: So as they were draining pitching, but still had the lead,
- 34:38Speaker 1: was Mizorowski, who is going to start tonight, was he
- 34:40Speaker 1: an option to try to finish game four?
- 34:43Speaker 14: You can't blow that type of situation on a one-run
- 34:47Speaker 14: lead on the road. If we were in the 13th
- 34:51Speaker 14: inning and we had a three-run lead, that might be
- 34:53Speaker 14: a little bit different and probably still wouldn't have.
- 34:55Speaker 7: But I mean, we did the things we needed to do.
- 34:59Speaker 14: They put the ball in play when they needed to and,
- 35:02Speaker 14: you know, did some clutch things when they needed to there.
- 35:05Speaker 7: We had the matchups we want. We made an error
- 35:08Speaker 7: in whatever the inning, the last inning. We made an error.
- 35:10Speaker 14: That's unusual, but we made an error, and then they
- 35:13Speaker 14: capitalized with a hit, a hit, a hit, and a hit.
- 35:18Speaker 1: Exactly what it was, four straight guys who managed to
- 35:22Speaker 1: get a hit, and it made the difference in the
- 35:25Speaker 1: ball game. But then after that, you know, they went
- 35:28Speaker 1: after Shane Drone and DeLuca had the pitch that went
- 35:33Speaker 1: up the middle for a base head. And then Williamson
- 35:37Speaker 1: had the pinch hit single that made the difference that
- 35:40Speaker 1: brought in the game winning run. So he was asked,
- 35:44Speaker 1: did he feel that the inning kind of snowballed on Drone?
- 35:47Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 35:47Speaker 14: I mean, I think the ball was up a little bit.
- 35:49Speaker 14: I mean, Senza threw two yesterday. He was kind of
- 35:51Speaker 14: out of gas today. We didn't, I think we would
- 35:53Speaker 14: have to go in that direction, but he did a
- 35:55Speaker 14: great job. We got him out of there yesterday in time.
- 35:58Speaker 14: He had a few number of pitches, and we felt
- 36:01Speaker 14: like he could give us one today, and we thought
- 36:04Speaker 14: Drowan could come in and face the lefties there. It
- 36:11Speaker 14: seems like the ball was up a little bit. It
- 36:12Speaker 14: was a little flat, but we learned from it. So
- 36:16Speaker 14: it's a three games to one lead.
- 36:19Speaker 1: It was announced a little while ago that the Rays
- 36:22Speaker 1: are going to go with.
- 36:25Speaker 2: Rasmussen.
- 36:27Speaker 1: On one day's less rest, on three days rest, he'll
- 36:32Speaker 1: go for the Rays tonight. And who did he say
- 36:38Speaker 1: was going to go? They haven't announced it, have they?
- 36:40Speaker 1: The Brewers announced?
- 36:42Speaker 3: For tonight?
- 36:42Speaker 2: Oh, well, no, it's Mizrowski. Yeah, it's Mizrowski for him.
- 36:46Speaker 1: And then Williamson was just announced just a little while ago.
- 36:52Speaker 1: He was announced just a little while ago that it's
- 36:57Speaker 1: going to be Rasmussen on three days rest going. So
- 37:00Speaker 1: Drew Rasmussen gets the start tonight for Tampa Bay as
- 37:03Speaker 1: they try to get it back to Milwaukee for game six.
- 37:05Speaker 2: So be ready for that. That'll be interesting to see.
- 37:09Speaker 1: Okay, coming up, we're going to hear both from Longhorn's
- 37:13Speaker 1: head coach, Steve Sarkeesian. And we'll hear from Jeff Levy,
- 37:16Speaker 1: head coach of Mississippi State. That was from today's SEC teleconference.
- 37:21Speaker 1: We have more of what we'll hear from the Cowboys
- 37:23Speaker 1: and the Texans as well. Here on the Yacht Rock
- 37:25Speaker 1: Wednesday on Sports Radio AM 13 under the zone on
- 37:27Speaker 1: the iHeartRadio app. Should land on the Mount Rushmore of
- 37:31Speaker 1: Yacht Rock. Yeah, from Alamo Heights High School. And an
- 37:36Speaker 1: Austin resident for many years. The one and only Christopher Cross. Mike.
- 37:43Speaker 1: None of us might never be the same depending from
- 37:45Speaker 1: day to day how things go, right? One thing's for certain,
- 37:49Speaker 1: the Southeastern Conference football race is ever-changing, right? We'll get
- 37:52Speaker 1: to more on that coming up in the college football
- 37:54Speaker 1: playoff situation. But we want to hear from the two
- 37:57Speaker 1: head coaches in this matchup in Austin, Texas on Saturday night.
- 38:02Speaker 1: By the way, because I get asked this a lot,
- 38:05Speaker 1: folks say, what exactly is the real kickoff time for
- 38:12Speaker 1: the game? I get that. What exactly is the real
- 38:16Speaker 1: kickoff time? Because remember, we heard Sark a couple of
- 38:19Speaker 1: times last week say, 649 on the kickoff.
- 38:22Speaker 3: And it was. I get asked, why is it delayed?
- 38:27Speaker 1: Ah, two letters, T, B, or in this case, last week,
- 38:32Speaker 1: three letters, A, B, C. They purposely, the game that
- 38:38Speaker 1: gets affected most when ABC slash ESPN, whatever, especially ABC.
- 38:45Speaker 2: I guess it really applies to both.
- 38:48Speaker 1: When they have triple headers that start at 11 a.m., okay,
- 38:52Speaker 1: and then the second game is supposed to be at 2.30,
- 38:56Speaker 1: then the third game is supposed to be at 6.30.
- 39:01Speaker 1: But we all know it never works that way because
- 39:03Speaker 1: the first game runs long and it affects everything else.
- 39:06Speaker 1: The second game, instead of 2.30, they wind up, and
- 39:08Speaker 1: they plan for it now in advance, to tell the
- 39:10Speaker 1: teams kick off at 2.49.
- 39:12Speaker 2: That's what it was for Texas OU. It wasn't 230,
- 39:14Speaker 2: it was 249.
- 39:16Speaker 1: So that in turn then affects the late game, which
- 39:19Speaker 1: was supposed to be 630 or 649. Now, there are
- 39:25Speaker 1: exceptions to that rule. And those exceptions happen when, what's
- 39:29Speaker 1: the nicest? way to put this? It isn't as big
- 39:32Speaker 1: a game of national impact on one of the two networks,
- 39:35Speaker 1: be it ABC or ESPN. So, and I haven't looked
- 39:38Speaker 1: to see what's the 11 a.m. Georgia, Florida, I would
- 39:41Speaker 1: think would be on ABC. I could be wrong about that.
- 39:46Speaker 1: But whatever game is that 11 a.m. which is the
- 39:50Speaker 1: leadoff game for ESPN, my guess is it's not as
- 39:56Speaker 1: big an impactful game.
- 39:57Speaker 7: Is it?
- 39:58Speaker 4: Well, Notre Dame at Gillette Stadium against Navy, ABC, 11 a.m.
- 40:05Speaker 2: Notre Dame, okay, yeah, at 11 a.m.
- 40:08Speaker 1: Well, they're counting on Notre Dame probably winning rather handily
- 40:11Speaker 1: and getting that thing done by 2.30 at the latest.
- 40:14Speaker 3: And that's when the cocktail party kicks off.
- 40:16Speaker 1: Okay, so then they, that, that thing would probably be
- 40:21Speaker 1: a 235 because the Texas game, this is all ESPN
- 40:24Speaker 1: you're talking about.
- 40:24Speaker 3: Oh, these are the ABC games.
- 40:26Speaker 10: Oh, okay.
- 40:26Speaker 3: I thought that's what you were asking.
- 40:28Speaker 2: Tell me the ESPN lineup.
- 40:30Speaker 4: 11 a.m., Arizona at Texas Tech.
- 40:33Speaker 2: Okay.
- 40:33Speaker 10: All right.
- 40:34Speaker 2: The second game?
- 40:35Speaker 4: And 2.30 p.m., actually 2.45, Utah at Cincinnati.
- 40:39Speaker 2: Okay. Utah at Cincinnati is the 245.
- 40:42Speaker 1: Texas and Mississippi State, what we've been told is it's
- 40:47Speaker 1: listed as 6.30. We were told this week it's 635
- 40:52Speaker 1: with a possible five-minute slide to 640. But they're probably
- 40:56Speaker 1: expecting the Utah thing to get wrapped up.
- 40:58Speaker 2: Or whatever, you know, and they go on from there.
- 41:00Speaker 2: Of course, Texas Tech might have thought the same thing.
- 41:02Speaker 2: At Nippert Stadium. At Nippert, yeah, over 100 years old.
- 41:06Speaker 3: Those are two pretty big Big 12 games.
- 41:08Speaker 2: Yep, yep, important stuff in the Big 12.
- 41:10Speaker 1: All right, important stuff in the SEC, especially for Texas
- 41:14Speaker 1: and Mississippi State. As I mentioned, there's the SEC teleconference
- 41:18Speaker 1: that Longhorn's head coach, Steve Sarkeesian, takes part in, along
- 41:21Speaker 1: with all the other SEC coaches.
- 41:26Speaker 2: Some of it handled.
- 41:27Speaker 1: Do you have the Mike Elko comment? Remember, we did
- 41:36Speaker 1: just the one comment there about his quarterback situation.
- 41:39Speaker 7: No, he.
- 41:41Speaker 1: he used the time when he was asked about it,
- 41:43Speaker 1: he had very quick comments. Somebody asked him, is your
- 41:48Speaker 1: starting quarterback still Marcel Reed?
- 41:50Speaker 2: And he said, yes. And then they said, can you
- 41:56Speaker 2: explain why?
- 41:58Speaker 1: And then he went on to say, well, we've said
- 42:01Speaker 1: all along, this is our guy and we'll get through stuff.
- 42:03Speaker 1: And it wasn't a real long answer, maybe 10 seconds,
- 42:07Speaker 1: but that was it. Then there were other coaches who have,
- 42:11Speaker 1: uh answers that might require a little more um explaining
- 42:15Speaker 1: uh a little more latitude on some of that uh
- 42:19Speaker 1: for example steve sarkisian was asked what about mississippi state
- 42:24Speaker 1: stands out to.
- 42:24Speaker 6: Him well i think obviously they got off to a
- 42:27Speaker 6: tremendous start this season um you know you think about
- 42:30Speaker 6: their ability minnesota turns turn it out to be a
- 42:33Speaker 6: pretty good football team and their ability to win at
- 42:35Speaker 6: minnesota South Carolina's turned out to be a pretty good
- 42:38Speaker 6: football team. Their ability to win at South Carolina and
- 42:42Speaker 6: Missouri turned out to be a pretty good football team
- 42:45Speaker 6: beating that Missouri team. Obviously, they've gotten hit with the
- 42:48Speaker 6: injury bug here a little bit, but they've still got
- 42:52Speaker 6: very talented players. They've got really good schemes on offense
- 42:55Speaker 6: and defense. I mean, I have a ton of respect
- 42:57Speaker 6: for Coach Levy and Coach Arnett and what they do
- 43:01Speaker 6: on offense and defense. It's a little unique. So they
- 43:05Speaker 6: challenge you from a preparation standpoint. And I think they
- 43:08Speaker 6: play with a lot of belief. And so, you know,
- 43:10Speaker 6: we felt that last year when we were there at Starkville.
- 43:14Speaker 6: And I'm sure they're going to give us all they
- 43:15Speaker 6: got Saturday night here at DKR.
- 43:18Speaker 1: He was then asked, you know, given how well they
- 43:22Speaker 1: have stopped the run, is he pleased with that and
- 43:24Speaker 1: the challenges that Fluff Bothwell, the running back, say that fast,
- 43:28Speaker 1: 10 times, Fluff Bothwell.
- 43:31Speaker 2: That's a mouthful.
- 43:33Speaker 1: But he's kind of a truckload, as we talked about
- 43:35Speaker 1: with Neil Price last hour, Mississippi State's running back. The
- 43:38Speaker 1: type of challenge he faces from Bothwell and how he
- 43:41Speaker 1: feels about how his defense is doing against the run.
- 43:44Speaker 6: Well, you know, I think that we've committed to stopping
- 43:47Speaker 6: the run, and we face some pretty good runners already.
- 43:52Speaker 6: You know, clearly, you know, with Camario being down, Fluff
- 43:56Speaker 6: provides an opportunity to ease a little bit of the load.
- 44:00Speaker 3: For the new quarterback.
- 44:02Speaker 6: But that being said, Levy's going to run his stuff,
- 44:05Speaker 6: and they're going to tax you from an RPO standpoint,
- 44:08Speaker 6: and you have to have the ability to play both
- 44:11Speaker 6: against a Jeff Levy offense.
- 44:13Speaker 3: But if you give Fluff.
- 44:14Speaker 6: Creases and you kind of try to tackle him from
- 44:17Speaker 6: the side, he falls forward, he breaks tackles, he's got
- 44:19Speaker 6: great contact balance, and he's got really good hands on
- 44:22Speaker 6: the backfield where he can hurt you in the passing
- 44:24Speaker 6: game as well.
- 44:25Speaker 1: All right, and then he was asked about the pass
- 44:29Speaker 1: rushing depth That's starting to emerge, especially with Colin Simmons out.
- 44:35Speaker 1: Richard Wesley was out, but they're getting other guys to
- 44:38Speaker 1: step up and his thoughts on that.
- 44:39Speaker 6: I mean, obviously, last week was a heck of a challenge,
- 44:42Speaker 6: you know, when you're when you're trying to get Trinidad
- 44:45Speaker 6: Chambliss on the ground. But at the same time, trying
- 44:49Speaker 6: to keep him in the pocket of how dangerous he
- 44:51Speaker 6: can be with his legs. I thought there was a
- 44:55Speaker 6: multitude of guys that stepped up. You know, when you
- 44:57Speaker 6: talked about Lance Jackson and Brad Spence, what they were
- 45:00Speaker 6: able to do. I thought Colton Vosick was effective in
- 45:03Speaker 6: the game. You know, clearly Zena. And then all the
- 45:07Speaker 6: interior guys, when you talk Maraud Watson, Alex January, Ian Griffard,
- 45:11Speaker 6: Hero Canoe, all those guys. And then at the same time,
- 45:15Speaker 6: you know, we touched on Raheem Biles and Justin Cryer
- 45:18Speaker 6: and what they've done at the linebacker position.
- 45:20Speaker 3: So I think it's been a great group effort.
- 45:23Speaker 6: I think that those guys are doing a really nice
- 45:25Speaker 6: job of playing really good team defense. Um, and the
- 45:29Speaker 6: rush lanes have been disciplined and this week's going to
- 45:31Speaker 6: be no different. I think that, you know, our, our
- 45:34Speaker 6: rush lane integrity is going to be really important. Um,
- 45:38Speaker 6: so much of what they do is coming off of
- 45:40Speaker 6: the RPO. So I think we do need to do
- 45:42Speaker 6: a good job of getting our hands up, which, you know, again, that,
- 45:45Speaker 6: that showed itself last week, getting our hands up at
- 45:47Speaker 6: the line of scrimmage and knocking some balls down as well. So,
- 45:51Speaker 6: I think so many times, like last week's game, was
- 45:55Speaker 6: how many sacks do you get? Sometimes it's not always
- 45:57Speaker 6: about the sacks you get. Are you affecting the quarterback?
- 46:01Speaker 6: And I think we did a good job of that. Obviously,
- 46:02Speaker 6: we had three interceptions. One was on the Hail Mary
- 46:05Speaker 6: at the end, but we had two earlier in the
- 46:07Speaker 6: game that I think was somewhat of a byproduct of
- 46:10Speaker 6: us making the pocket feel small and forcing some errant throws.
- 46:14Speaker 1: Okay, and we'll hear some more from Sark next hour. Now,
- 46:17Speaker 1: Jeff Lebby. head coach at Mississippi State. First of all,
- 46:20Speaker 1: his opening thoughts.
- 46:25Speaker 7: Yeah, our guys are.
- 46:26Speaker 8: They're really excited about the opportunity, the challenge that's ahead
- 46:30Speaker 8: of us Saturday night in Austin.
- 46:32Speaker 7: We've had a great start to the week.
- 46:35Speaker 8: That needs to continue for us to be able to
- 46:36Speaker 8: go play the way we need to play Saturday night
- 46:39Speaker 8: to give us a chance.
- 46:41Speaker 1: Next, he was asked about the aggressive nature of the
- 46:44Speaker 1: Texas defense. And whoever is going to play quarterback for
- 46:51Speaker 1: Mississippi State, and the reason why I say whoever is
- 46:54Speaker 1: because he was not going to tip his hand on that.
- 46:57Speaker 1: And we did visit with Neil Price, play-by-play voice of
- 47:01Speaker 1: the Bulldogs last time. By the way, thanks to CPAL.
- 47:03Speaker 1: Nice comment on our text line. Really enjoyed the conversation
- 47:08Speaker 1: with Neil. He's a great guy, great guy to talk with. And,
- 47:12Speaker 1: you know, it could be Billy Puckett. It could be A.J.
- 47:14Speaker 4: Swamp.
- 47:15Speaker 1: But we don't know yet because he hasn't announced who's
- 47:18Speaker 1: going to be. And as we're learning, it probably won't
- 47:20Speaker 1: be until game time. But the question was, has he
- 47:23Speaker 1: talked to both Puckett and Swan about the aggressive nature
- 47:28Speaker 1: of the Texas defense and the structure and how you
- 47:29Speaker 1: deal with that?
- 47:30Speaker 8: Yeah, he's always had an aggressive style of defense, how
- 47:34Speaker 8: they've done what they've done at all of his different stops,
- 47:37Speaker 8: a ton of consistency in that. And so for us,
- 47:40Speaker 8: there's got to be incredible balance, and the QB's got
- 47:43Speaker 8: to take incredible care of the ball for us to
- 47:45Speaker 8: go do what we're trying to do.
- 47:46Speaker 1: Okay, next, he was asked about what the process has
- 47:52Speaker 1: been like preparing for the backup quarterbacks, whoever it's going
- 47:56Speaker 1: to be that's going to take the snap and having
- 47:58Speaker 1: to go into this.
- 47:59Speaker 8: Yeah, you're trying to create predictable outcomes, you know, making
- 48:02Speaker 8: sure that the game is called in a way to
- 48:04Speaker 8: put those guys in positions of success. at some point
- 48:08Speaker 8: in time, they're going to have to make a play.
- 48:10Speaker 8: They're going to have to be able to go throw
- 48:12Speaker 8: and catch. Great confidence in both these guys to be
- 48:14Speaker 8: able to do that as we get closer to kick.
- 48:17Speaker 8: But that's my job as a play caller is, again,
- 48:20Speaker 8: to put those guys in positions of success and make
- 48:22Speaker 8: sure we're doing things that fit them in a great way.
- 48:25Speaker 7: Okay.
- 48:26Speaker 2: All right. Next, in talking about A.J.
- 48:29Speaker 1: Swan, a guy who is listed as the third guy
- 48:32Speaker 1: who hasn't taken a snap yet for the Bulldogs, but
- 48:37Speaker 1: was a quarterback at Appalachian State before he got injured.
- 48:40Speaker 1: And so now they've been preparing him as well as Puckett.
- 48:43Speaker 1: What has it been like viewing Swan and the experience
- 48:47Speaker 1: that has him now in this battle to be the
- 48:49Speaker 1: quarterback for the Bulldogs?
- 48:51Speaker 7: Yeah, again, I've talked about A.J. and the experience. He's
- 48:54Speaker 7: lived it. He's done it. He's played a lot of football.
- 48:56Speaker 8: He's the healthiest that he's been, honestly, since we got
- 48:59Speaker 8: him in January. And so for him being able to
- 49:03Speaker 8: go compete for the job this week, both those guys,
- 49:06Speaker 8: they have.
- 49:07Speaker 7: They've had a really good start to the week. They've
- 49:09Speaker 7: got to continue.
- 49:10Speaker 8: That as we really dial in on the game plan.
- 49:13Speaker 7: And I get ready to go call the game for
- 49:15Speaker 7: whoever it is it's going to go.
- 49:16Speaker 1: Start okay um now back to the camario taylor thing
- 49:20Speaker 1: uh you know uh you know why was the decision
- 49:24Speaker 1: made when it was made about taylor to miss the
- 49:29Speaker 1: rest of the season and announced on monday Like.
- 49:32Speaker 7: We said in the statement, it was. It was something
- 49:35Speaker 7: that was a team decision.
- 49:38Speaker 8: Everybody involved, it was the right thing to do. And
- 49:40Speaker 8: Camario did, man. He did everything he could to be
- 49:43Speaker 8: able to stay on the field, get back on the field.
- 49:46Speaker 8: But it was the right thing. He's finished up surgery
- 49:48Speaker 8: this morning.
- 49:49Speaker 7: And went, went really, really well. Just got off FaceTime
- 49:52Speaker 7: with him. So, uh, great news from that standpoint.
- 49:55Speaker 2: Okay.
- 49:55Speaker 1: Um, are they able to keep their spirits high, his
- 49:58Speaker 1: team without Taylor on the field?
- 50:01Speaker 8: Yeah, we got a lot out in front of us.
- 50:02Speaker 8: There's a lot of football to be played. We're four
- 50:04Speaker 8: and three. That's the reality of it. And for our guys,
- 50:06Speaker 8: it is man. It's, Each week is its own week,
- 50:09Speaker 8: and another great challenge ahead of us Saturday night.
- 50:12Speaker 7: Our guys are going to be excited to go play.
- 50:14Speaker 2: Okay, and how's Taylor doing mentally after all of this?
- 50:17Speaker 8: Yeah, he was just in a good spot again. He's
- 50:19Speaker 8: in recovery, but again, the surgery went great and re-aggravated it.
- 50:25Speaker 7: Nothing more to it than that.
- 50:26Speaker 2: Okay, and then one other from him.
- 50:30Speaker 1: Regardless of who takes the snap at quarterback, there's going
- 50:33Speaker 1: to have to be improved offensive line play. Now, he's
- 50:37Speaker 1: seen some steps in that, but it's going to be
- 50:41Speaker 1: important for them to continue to improve on the offensive front.
- 50:44Speaker 8: We're going to need everybody to go play the way
- 50:46Speaker 8: we're capable of playing. We're going to need to play
- 50:49Speaker 8: really well and really clean up front to be able
- 50:51Speaker 8: to take some pressure off the QB. We're going to
- 50:54Speaker 8: need a great run game. Fluff being healthy and being
- 50:57Speaker 8: back is a huge piece of that. There's got to
- 51:00Speaker 8: be great balance. We're going to have to make explosive
- 51:03Speaker 8: plays in the, in the throw game. That's, uh, that's
- 51:06Speaker 8: part of it as well. So, man, it all works together.
- 51:09Speaker 4: All right.
- 51:10Speaker 1: Uh, we'll hear some more, uh, from Jeff Levy coming
- 51:13Speaker 1: up next hour. Now, um, when we were talking with
- 51:16Speaker 1: Neil Price, we brought up the fact that, you know,
- 51:20Speaker 1: here's Mississippi State four and three. They're clearly not in
- 51:22Speaker 1: the SEC race. They're not in the playoff race, anything
- 51:24Speaker 1: like that, but they still have things to play for. Uh,
- 51:28Speaker 1: A lot of the teams in college football, there are
- 51:31Speaker 1: 138 of them, still have things they can play for.
- 51:33Speaker 1: There are some who aren't. I mean, Sam Houston's 1-7.
- 51:38Speaker 1: They're in the bottom 10. But there are some who
- 51:44Speaker 1: have things to play for. Heather Dinich did her playoff
- 51:47Speaker 1: bubble watch and just a quick overview of it in
- 51:51Speaker 1: the ACC. She writes that if the playoff were today,
- 51:55Speaker 1: Miami would be in. Wake Forest would be on what's
- 51:57Speaker 1: called the wrong side of the bubble. Now, if they
- 51:59Speaker 1: were on the table, including whenever SMU, they're going to
- 52:01Speaker 1: get in the ACC championship. Too early to tell, she says, Duke, SMU,
- 52:05Speaker 1: and Virginia Tech. And the ones that are out, Boston College, Cal, Clemson,
- 52:09Speaker 1: Florida State, Georgia Tech, Louisville, NC State, North Carolina, Pitt, Stanford, Virginia,
- 52:15Speaker 1: and Syracuse. In the Big 12... She says the spotlight's
- 52:20Speaker 1: on Utah. The enigma is Arizona. If the playoff were today,
- 52:24Speaker 1: BYU and Utah would be in the wrong side of
- 52:26Speaker 1: the bubbles, Tech and Arizona. She said, you know, if
- 52:30Speaker 1: Utah were to run the table, Notre Dame were to
- 52:35Speaker 1: beat Miami, and then BYU were to beat Utah, both
- 52:39Speaker 1: BYU and Utah would get in. So that would make
- 52:41Speaker 1: two from the Big 12. But she didn't put Texas
- 52:43Speaker 1: Tech in that category. Tech, of course, still controls its
- 52:46Speaker 1: own destiny, but that one lost. has given them really
- 52:49Speaker 1: almost no margin for error now. They're on the wrong
- 52:52Speaker 1: side of the bubble, she says, along with Arizona. Too
- 52:56Speaker 1: early to tell Cincinnati, Houston, and Oklahoma State, and those
- 52:58Speaker 1: who are out, Arizona State, Baylor, Colorado, Iowa State, Kansas,
- 53:02Speaker 1: Kansas State, TCU, UCF, and West Virginia. In the Big Ten,
- 53:06Speaker 1: the spotlight's on UCLA. Ty, is it Diffenbach, who will
- 53:12Speaker 1: take over for Nico Yamaliava?
- 53:14Speaker 3: I thought there was another syllable in there. Diffenbacher?
- 53:17Speaker 1: No, I'm thinking somebody else. It's either Dieffenbach or Diffenbach.
- 53:23Speaker 1: It's D-I-E-F-F-E-N-B-A-C-H. So anyway, he'll be the guy. Ohio State
- 53:30Speaker 1: is listed as the enigma. At the playoff for today,
- 53:32Speaker 1: Ohio State, Indiana, and UCLA would all be in, she says.
- 53:36Speaker 2: Nobody on the wrong side of the bubble. Too early to.
- 53:38Speaker 1: Tell about Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northwestern, USC, and Wisconsin. A
- 53:41Speaker 1: lot of that is going to sort itself out this weekend.
- 53:43Speaker 1: There's a lot of head-to-head there. And those who are out, Illinois, Michigan, Maryland,
- 53:48Speaker 1: Michigan State, Oregon, Penn State, Purdue, Rutgers, and Washington.
- 53:51Speaker 2: SEC.
- 53:52Speaker 1: Spotlight on Georgia. The enigma is Florida. Today would be
- 53:56Speaker 1: in Georgia, Kentucky, Texas, and Ole Miss. Wrong side of
- 54:00Speaker 1: the bubble. LSU, Tennessee, Alabama, and Florida. Too early to
- 54:04Speaker 1: tell on Missouri. And those who are out. Arkansas, Auburn,
- 54:07Speaker 1: Mississippi State, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas A & M, and Vanderbilt.
- 54:11Speaker 1: Independent in Notre Dame. Group of six spotlight. Boise State.
- 54:16Speaker 1: They play Texas State this week. New Mexico listed as
- 54:19Speaker 1: the enigma. Boise State would be in at the playoff,
- 54:21Speaker 1: where today on the wrong side of the bubble would
- 54:23Speaker 1: be New Mexico, UTSA, and Oregon State. And she has
- 54:28Speaker 1: the first-round buys, the top four seeds, Miami. These are
- 54:32Speaker 1: all projected conference champions, these four. Miami, Ohio State, Georgia,
- 54:37Speaker 1: and BYU.
- 54:38Speaker 10: Then.
- 54:41Speaker 1: Then you would have in the 12 versus 5, Boise
- 54:45Speaker 1: State at Notre Dame at 5, 11 at 6, Ole
- 54:49Speaker 1: Miss at Indiana, 10 at 7, Texas at Utah, 9
- 54:54Speaker 1: at 8, Kentucky at UCLA. And then it goes on
- 54:59Speaker 1: from there. So that's our bubble watch for this week.
- 55:01Speaker 1: All right, up next, more NFL coming your way when
- 55:03Speaker 1: we continue on Sports Radio AM 13 Under the Zone
- 55:05Speaker 1: and the iHeartRadio app. Now, despite the best efforts of
- 55:12Speaker 1: some to tell Brian Schottenheimer and D'Amico Ryans it's over,
- 55:16Speaker 1: it's over. First of all, the Cowboys are only a
- 55:19Speaker 1: game and a half out of first.
- 55:21Speaker 2: I know, they're three and four. Giants are four, two,
- 55:24Speaker 2: and one.
- 55:26Speaker 1: Texans, yeah, won back-to-back games, get to two and four,
- 55:29Speaker 1: but then lost that game to the Giants and dropped
- 55:31Speaker 1: to two and five.
- 55:31Speaker 2: Let's hear from both head coaches.
- 55:33Speaker 1: Brian Schottenheimer asked if the win was a confidence booster
- 55:37Speaker 1: for his team.
- 55:38Speaker 15: What we take away from that offensively is the play style.
- 55:43Speaker 15: I thought the offensive line was just dynamite all night.
- 55:48Speaker 15: I thought the way they blocked the running game was great.
- 55:51Speaker 15: The pass protection was awesome. I thought the defensive adjustments
- 55:55Speaker 15: after the opening drive in the second half were really,
- 55:58Speaker 15: really good where we got them into four straight.
- 56:02Speaker 2: Drives that failed.
- 56:04Speaker 15: And then I think with special teams, I thought Brandon
- 56:06Speaker 15: Aubrey was– kicked off outstanding and then the coverage units
- 56:11Speaker 15: i thought were great so it's a good step it's
- 56:13Speaker 15: one step uh but when you watch the film there
- 56:15Speaker 15: was a lot of positives to take away from it see.
- 56:17Speaker 1: That's an example what i'm talking about how he seemed
- 56:19Speaker 1: to be in a much better state and frame of
- 56:22Speaker 1: mind that was a 38 second answer not an eight
- 56:26Speaker 1: second answer.
- 56:26Speaker 3: Yeah if you were with us yesterday it's about 17 seconds.
- 56:30Speaker 1: Was the longest one out of like 15 and it
- 56:33Speaker 1: took a follow-up yeah for that so uh so then
- 56:37Speaker 1: he was asked why does he think it's been difficult
- 56:40Speaker 1: for them to string wins together and he said it's
- 56:43Speaker 1: quite simple uh really one.
- 56:44Speaker 15: Word inconsistency probably um you know it's a a business
- 56:51Speaker 15: where you have to be consistent with your execution with
- 56:55Speaker 15: your performance and uh i think we've been lacking that
- 56:58Speaker 15: at times and uh you know, another good week, another
- 57:01Speaker 15: opponent coming in there with a lot of challenges that
- 57:03Speaker 15: they're going to present.
- 57:04Speaker 2: But it's more about us and the lack of consistency.
- 57:08Speaker 2: All right.
- 57:09Speaker 1: Tyler Guyton had been inconsistent, but he's playing well now.
- 57:12Speaker 1: And to the report, it seems like his on-field demeanor
- 57:15Speaker 1: has changed a little.
- 57:16Speaker 2: It actually has.
- 57:17Speaker 15: I think you see a guy, I'll use the word focused,
- 57:20Speaker 15: you know, and playing one play at a time. You know,
- 57:22Speaker 15: this is a guy that um playing with tremendous confidence
- 57:26Speaker 15: but like literally you see a guy that's bought into
- 57:28Speaker 15: the mantra of one play at a time they do
- 57:30Speaker 15: the play the best your ability to move on and
- 57:33Speaker 15: we actually don't talk about him a lot because he's
- 57:35Speaker 15: playing really really well you know and uh playing at
- 57:38Speaker 15: one of the elite levels in the league in my opinion.
- 57:41Speaker 1: All right and this was a reporter's terminology as he
- 57:44Speaker 1: always played like to use his terminology a jerk.
- 57:48Speaker 15: No i think he's always been wired that way but
- 57:50Speaker 15: i do think that now he's playing with so much
- 57:52Speaker 15: confidence that uh he's finishing even more. He's in a
- 57:59Speaker 15: really good spot mentally with his fundamentals. You talk about
- 58:03Speaker 15: a guy that's really accepted the coaching from Conor Riley
- 58:06Speaker 15: and Clayton in terms of the fundamentals.
- 58:09Speaker 1: It's cool to see how much better it's gotten. Next,
- 58:12Speaker 1: he was asked, C.D. Lamb had a big game the
- 58:16Speaker 1: other night catching the ball. George Pickens had a big
- 58:19Speaker 1: catch as well. Can they still be a run-first offense,
- 58:23Speaker 1: Jontae Williams had the big game running the football. Can
- 58:26Speaker 1: they still run first with those two other playmakers out there?
- 58:30Speaker 15: Yeah, because you see what we can do when we
- 58:32Speaker 15: throw it 27 times.
- 58:34Speaker 2: Each week is different. And Javante Williams is a hell
- 58:39Speaker 2: of a football player.
- 58:40Speaker 15: The offensive line, there's a ton of resources invested in
- 58:43Speaker 15: the offensive line. I think I'd be remiss if I
- 58:46Speaker 15: didn't mention the way the tight ends and Hunter Lepke,
- 58:49Speaker 15: including Jake Ferguson, blocked last night. There were some incredible
- 58:52Speaker 15: efforts and finishes that jumped off the tape. You know,
- 58:56Speaker 15: Philadelphia likes to play a lot of shell defense, and
- 58:59Speaker 15: so that was part of the plan, and then when
- 59:00Speaker 15: you're running the ball with the success that we have,
- 59:02Speaker 15: they have to make, you know, adjustments, and when they do,
- 59:05Speaker 15: then you get one-on-one opportunities, and it was really cool
- 59:07Speaker 15: to see both cd and and george you know getting
- 59:10Speaker 15: the end zone when they were matched up one-on-one.
- 59:12Speaker 1: All right one more from a shot he was asked
- 59:14Speaker 1: if clayton adams has been helpful to the play.
- 59:16Speaker 15: Caller clayton's great he's always awesome um i think you
- 59:19Speaker 15: know our conversations and our you know uh the way
- 59:22Speaker 15: we communicate on game day is very um clear very
- 59:25Speaker 15: clean he gives me great you know information like we've
- 59:29Speaker 15: talked about before being up in the box is very
- 59:31Speaker 15: different he's got a front row seat for exactly what's
- 59:34Speaker 15: going on so um I think it was more of
- 59:36Speaker 15: an emphasis for him you know where hey how can
- 59:38Speaker 15: I help and uh I thought uh he was his
- 59:41Speaker 15: normal great self last night.
- 59:43Speaker 1: All right um uh D'Amico Ryans uh let's say how
- 59:47Speaker 1: do you go about fixing things like excessive penalties and
- 59:52Speaker 1: tackling or lack of tackling issues.
- 59:54Speaker 11: Clean up the penalties and the tackling. It starts collectively
- 59:58Speaker 11: just with ownership, right? Just tackling is fundamentals. We got
- 1:00:01Speaker 11: to wrap up. We had a few opportunities there. We're
- 1:00:05Speaker 11: not wrapping up. We're sitting in the chairs. What we're saying,
- 1:00:08Speaker 11: we're kind of waiting on the back as opposed to
- 1:00:11Speaker 11: playing fast and just going and shooting our shot and
- 1:00:14Speaker 11: everybody's swimming to the football penalties. We just have to
- 1:00:18Speaker 11: make sure we're clean, especially when it comes to blocking,
- 1:00:21Speaker 11: knowing when to let up, knowing we can't, you know,
- 1:00:24Speaker 11: cold guy you can't do that so you have to
- 1:00:26Speaker 11: be smart there you got to know when to let
- 1:00:28Speaker 11: up especially when you're at the point of.
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: Attack and that's one of the things that's really you
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: know been frustrating for D'Amico is to see his team
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: struggle with fundamentals.
- 1:00:38Speaker 11: We are where we are right now right and as
- 1:00:41Speaker 11: where we are it's not good enough and it starts
- 1:00:44Speaker 11: first off with me.
- 1:00:45Speaker 7: So obviously I got to coach it.
- 1:00:47Speaker 11: Better and got to do a better job of getting
- 1:00:49Speaker 11: across to the guys that, you know, things are there
- 1:00:52Speaker 11: for us or we can make a few plays. The
- 1:00:55Speaker 11: games we've been in, we've been in some tight ball games.
- 1:00:57Speaker 11: That's what it, that's what the NFL is. I think
- 1:01:00Speaker 11: five of our games came down to the last possession, right?
- 1:01:03Speaker 11: And we've won one, we lost four of them. So
- 1:01:06Speaker 11: there are a few plays out there. We can find
- 1:01:08Speaker 11: a way to make those plays. We can be sitting
- 1:01:10Speaker 11: on the other side. We didn't make those plays. So
- 1:01:12Speaker 11: we are where we are right now.
- 1:01:14Speaker 7: And It is what it is.
- 1:01:15Speaker 11: How do we press forward? How do we move ahead
- 1:01:18Speaker 11: and find a way to make those plays?
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: Yeah, what can coaching these things better mean for the team?
- 1:01:23Speaker 11: It means if it's not showing up, I really got
- 1:01:25Speaker 11: to do a better job to make sure it shows up.
- 1:01:28Speaker 11: What you see on tape is what we're coaching, right?
- 1:01:32Speaker 11: And so if it shows up on tape that we're
- 1:01:34Speaker 11: not tackling well, I got to make sure I'm emphasizing
- 1:01:37Speaker 11: that much more and putting the guys in position throughout
- 1:01:40Speaker 11: the weekend practice to get that done.
- 1:01:43Speaker 2: Okay, there's some from D'Amico as well. We'll be back
- 1:01:46Speaker 2: to wrap up our number two on 13 Under the Zone.
- 1:01:50Speaker 2: Before we get up to the top of the hour,
- 1:01:51Speaker 2: we got a few questions, Jake, coming in.
- 1:01:54Speaker 4: Yeah, we got a few from Noah Martinez. First, he asked,
- 1:01:57Speaker 4: would Levy leave Mississippi State for Baylor?
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: Anything's possible, certainly, especially given the questions, would Baylor be
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: interested in Jeff Levy?
- 1:02:10Speaker 2: I don't know if.
- 1:02:12Speaker 2: Baggage means anything with.
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: Regard to him being our brow son-in-law and you know
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: some of the other things that have happened in the
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: past or so I don't know that that really matters
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: uh that much on that the question is uh will
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: he have done enough to attract the interest like I
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: haven't heard his name I've heard obviously Jeff Traylor's name
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: mentioned even heard Lincoln Riley's name mentioned being a native
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: of the state of Texas for other ones as well
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: I've not heard Levy's.
- 1:02:39Speaker 4: Well, speaking of Lincoln Riley, his next question, in some way,
- 1:02:41Speaker 4: would Texas Tech go get Riley and fire McGuire?
- 1:02:45Speaker 3: I think things would have to go real south this year.
- 1:02:48Speaker 2: For both.
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: I mean, they're kind of going south that way for USC.
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: But no, it would have to really completely unravel for Tech.
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: I know Cody Campbell's not happy right now. And when
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: Cody's not happy, the South Plains is not happy. But
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: it'd have to get real unhappy for those kinds of
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: thoughts to be considered.
- 1:03:09Speaker 3: Right now, the anchor is directed at radio producers pretty soon.
- 1:03:11Speaker 2: That's exactly right.
- 1:03:13Speaker 4: Needs to find another target. And then his last question,
- 1:03:15Speaker 4: will Ohio State lose the rest of their games? Ohio State? Well,
- 1:03:20Speaker 4: I think he's worried about the Julian Stan injury, but
- 1:03:23Speaker 4: I mean. Well, first of all, Stan, it's not going
- 1:03:26Speaker 4: to matter, I think, with Stan not out there. I
- 1:03:27Speaker 4: think they're going to be fine against USC. They've got
- 1:03:31Speaker 4: winnable games. Home Oregon, home Northwestern, at Nebraska, home Michigan.
- 1:03:37Speaker 2: I think they win every one of those.
- 1:03:39Speaker 3: I'm with you.
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: Now, if saying being out affects them that adversely, we'll know.
- 1:03:48Speaker 2: But I don't see that happening.
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: I think Ohio State's winning the rest of their games,
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: or at least the vast majority of those. The one
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: that's more adversely affected by not having the quarterback is Oregon,
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: not having Dante Moore. And we'll see how adversely affected
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: Mississippi State is not having Kamario Taylor for the rest
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: of the season. Okay, coming up in this final hour,
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: we have some more Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkeesian sound,
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: more from Jeff Levy, more on the World Series.
- 1:04:21Speaker 2: In the last 30 minutes.
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: Jake will take you there because I'll be heading over
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: when we get to 4.30 over to campus to get
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: ready for our recording of Longhorn Weekly with Coach Sark,
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: which comes your way tomorrow at 5.45. Because at 6.45,
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: Texas women's basketball, they're playing Baylor, not Eastern New Mexico.
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: They had to drop out, didn't have enough healthy players.
- 1:04:43Speaker 7: Baylor does.
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: Baylor will be here 7 o'clock tomorrow night. You'll hear
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: it here on The Zone beginning at 6.45. But 4
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: o'clock hour next right here on 13 Under the Zone.
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: Third and final hour of the program here on Sports
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: Radio AM 13 Under the Zone.
- 1:05:08Speaker 2: Craig Wade joined by the producer, Jay Kermit. Glad to
- 1:05:11Speaker 2: have you with us.
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: We're with you up until 5 o'clock here.
- 1:05:15Speaker 2: And we've already heard.
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: A bit from Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkeesian from the
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: SEC weekly teleconference. Also from Jeff Lebby, the head coach
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: at Mississippi State. We'll hear some more from Sarke coming
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: up here In a few minutes, more on the Cowboys,
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: more on the Texans still to come, and a little
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: more on the World Series. Since, after all, we do
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: have a Game 5 of the World Series. There is
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: a Game 5. You realize, Jake, that if Tampa Bay
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: finds a way to win Game 5, and I'd say
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: the odds are stacked pretty heavily against them with Jacob
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: Mizorowski ready to go, although the Brewers' bullpen did get taxed, but,
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: I mean, it's... Everybody, you know, as Keith Moreland always say,
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: everybody's got their spikes on for Tampa Bay in terms
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: of the pitching available tonight.
- 1:06:07Speaker 2: You know, Johnny Holstaff, the whole bit.
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: That if the Rays find a way to win game
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: five and the series shifts back to Milwaukee, it will
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: then align with the vast majority of the predictions I
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: saw prior to the World Series, that picked the Brewers
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: to win the World Series in six games. Gene Watson
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: will join us tomorrow. He picked the Brewers to win
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: in six. There are many, many others I saw pick
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: the Brewers to win in six. I don't know that
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: anybody thought it would start off with three straight wins
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: for Milwaukee, followed by a win in game four. And
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: we'll see if there's a win in game five. But
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: if the Rays do find a way to win, it's
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: going back to Milwaukee for game six on Friday.
- 1:06:53Speaker 2: So there's that.
- 1:06:54Speaker 4: And the crowd won't sound all that different back in
- 1:06:57Speaker 4: American family field. Yeah.
- 1:06:59Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:07:00Speaker 2: That's amazing.
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: What we were hearing earlier, uh, with those, uh, highlight
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: calls with the roars coming up after, uh, the home
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: run from Cooper Pratt. And, uh, you think about that,
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: here's a guy in Cooper Pratt, a rookie had his
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: parents of the game and all this other kind of
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: stuff and family and all this thing. And here he
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: was set to be, uh, Perhaps the last in a
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: long line of heroes. for the Brewers to lead in
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: the World Series, and it all melts away because the
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: leadoff man gets a board due to an error, and
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: then there's another earning, and then boom, they wind up
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: getting the two runs home, and they win.
- 1:07:40Speaker 3: Yeah, and it hasn't bit them yet.
- 1:07:41Speaker 4: It has not bit them yet in this postseason, but
- 1:07:44Speaker 4: you go back a couple weeks now, the Brewers are
- 1:07:46Speaker 4: not defending like they did during the regular season. That's
- 1:07:49Speaker 4: been talked about on the broadcast a bunch. It's been
- 1:07:51Speaker 4: talked about by certain pundits I've seen that have followed
- 1:07:55Speaker 4: the series, and it was so fascinating last night to
- 1:07:59Speaker 4: watch There's two teams in the league that I feel
- 1:08:03Speaker 4: most confident in dragged into a series where the depth
- 1:08:07Speaker 4: of the roster is going to decide it. But they're
- 1:08:09Speaker 4: playing each other. So the matchup and the chess match
- 1:08:13Speaker 4: is fascinating. I wonder how Caminero looks tonight. Saw him
- 1:08:17Speaker 4: hobbling off late in the 12th inning last night.
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: The 7-8-9s have been the difference for Milwaukee, although they
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: kind of contributed to what happened last night with the
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: things that got away.
- 1:08:28Speaker 2: So We'll see what happens with that.
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: All right, let's go back to hearing from Longhorn's head coach,
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: Steve Sarkeesian. One of the questions he was asked was
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: about Derek Williams. This guy came in with a lot
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: of hype, a lot of accolade, came in, actually had
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: been ahead of the game on the depth chart for
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: a while. Then he had a really bad knee injury,
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: took a long time to get back. Now he's making plays.
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: He comes off maybe his best game in a long
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: time last Saturday. And Sark was asked about the journey
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: that Derek Williams has and the confidence that he's playing
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: with now.
- 1:09:00Speaker 3: And Derek's a very good football player.
- 1:09:02Speaker 6: You know, obviously I touched on this on Monday at
- 1:09:04Speaker 6: my press conference. You know, he was a guy that
- 1:09:06Speaker 6: was starting ahead of Andrew Makuba. who now is starting
- 1:09:09Speaker 6: in the NFL, was a second round pick. Derek suffered
- 1:09:12Speaker 6: a significant knee injury. And when you look at that position,
- 1:09:17Speaker 6: that body type, you know, yeah, you can come back
- 1:09:20Speaker 6: and play in nine to 12 months, but you're really
- 1:09:22Speaker 6: not going to be the same player that you were before.
- 1:09:25Speaker 6: It takes about 18 months or so. And so it
- 1:09:28Speaker 6: took a whole nother season. I credit Derek for, you know,
- 1:09:33Speaker 6: sticking with it here. You know, I know there was
- 1:09:35Speaker 6: a moment in time where he was, really considering leaving. Um,
- 1:09:39Speaker 6: but he decided to stay, you know, in, in playing
- 1:09:42Speaker 6: coach must champ scheme with coach Gideon coming back. Um,
- 1:09:46Speaker 6: and I've really seen the growth in him and you
- 1:09:48Speaker 6: see the maturity in him. I thought he had a
- 1:09:51Speaker 6: fantastic game Saturday. He looked fast. He looked physical. He
- 1:09:54Speaker 6: looked instinctive. Uh, so you, again, we're, we're lucky to
- 1:09:57Speaker 6: have him, but I'm also very proud of Derek for
- 1:09:59Speaker 6: the resiliency and grit that he's shown through this time
- 1:10:03Speaker 6: in this process.
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: Next up, um, and I've explained this before, and there
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: is absolutely, positively nothing wrong with a question like this
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: being asked. You just have to know that a question
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: like this is coming. It's not any kind of a
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: gotcha question or anything like that. He does get a
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: few of those, but this is not one of those.
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: One must understand that at his press conference on Mondays,
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: at his Zoom media availability on Thursdays, and we'll hear
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: from that tomorrow, and the periodical SEC teleconference like this one,
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: that there's going to be a recruiting thread that runs
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: through it. And the reason for that is a lot
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: of the guys who are on the call And I'm
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: not just talking about Texas.
- 1:11:03Speaker 2: I'm talking about those who cover the schools of the SEC.
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: A lot of those guys are reporters who are reporting
- 1:11:11Speaker 1: for fan sites who are wanting recruiting news, recruiting updates,
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: because there will be student athletes who commit, others who
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: decommit during the course of a season.
- 1:11:22Speaker 2: Some of it is depending on.
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: Some of that depends on if the team wins or
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: loses or the outcome of a given game, that kind
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: of thing. So you can almost bet your bottom dollar
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: that there's going to be a question or two almost
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: weekly about what happens when a team has a home
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: game and a lot of recruits coming in and the
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: vibe they get.
- 1:11:47Speaker 2: And of course, the coaches can't.
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: Get into the specifics of specifically named recruits. But they
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: can answer questions about it overall. And it was a friend,
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: Anwar Richardson, who asked Sark a question with regard to
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: the fact that there are just two home games left.
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: After this, there's only one. And they only have one game,
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: one home game in the month of November. So Sark
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: was asked about this, the challenges that come with only
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: having one more home game following this one coming up
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: on Saturday against Mississippi State and how that affects recruiting.
- 1:12:23Speaker 6: Well, I think we've done a pretty good job of
- 1:12:26Speaker 6: taking advantage of the games that we've had early in
- 1:12:29Speaker 6: the season, right? And we've had some great games, some
- 1:12:33Speaker 6: big games here, and most notably this past weekend. And
- 1:12:36Speaker 6: so we had official visitors here last weekend to go
- 1:12:39Speaker 6: along with unofficial visitors. We really try to promote getting
- 1:12:44Speaker 6: guys here for our conference games and not just our
- 1:12:49Speaker 6: local guys. I think the guys from out of state
- 1:12:51Speaker 6: have shown up. So Like I said, we're trying to
- 1:12:54Speaker 6: take advantage of the games that we have from an
- 1:12:57Speaker 6: unofficial visit standpoint, but also an official visit standpoint. And
- 1:13:01Speaker 6: I thought last week was very effective, you know, with
- 1:13:04Speaker 6: some of the results coming out of the visitors that
- 1:13:05Speaker 6: we had at last week's game.
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: Next, Sark was asked about the running back situation. Now,
- 1:13:15Speaker 1: we'll find out in the student-athlete availability report that comes out,
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: I think, at 7.10 p.m. Tonight is the first one
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: on Wednesday. Then there'll be a follow-up on Thursday, and
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: there'll be a follow-up on Friday, and then there'll be
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: a final one 90 minutes before kickoff on Saturday, which,
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: by the way, is probably right around the time we'll
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: find out, and maybe not until they actually trot one
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: out on the field, because you heard that from Jeff
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: Levy earlier, who is actually going to go out to
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: take the snaps to start a quarterback for Mississippi State.
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: At running back, Hollywood Smother's still on the mend. Derek
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: Cooper's still on the mend. Michael Terry had stepped up, obviously,
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: and Relique Brown with his big game, 157 rushing yards
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: as well. So when it comes to evaluating the running backs,
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: clearly the coaches are going to look at how they're
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: running and what they're doing, maybe breaking out tackles, ball protection,
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: all those kinds of things. And Jabbar Jalouk, who came
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: over from Florida as the running backs coach. He's working very, very,
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: very hard with those guys. But Sark was also asked
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: about the pass-blocking skills of these running backs, and does
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: it carry with it an impact on running backs' playing time?
- 1:14:35Speaker 7: Well, it's one of the.
- 1:14:35Speaker 6: Key components to playing the position, right? You want to
- 1:14:40Speaker 6: be a good runner, you want to be a good
- 1:14:42Speaker 6: pass receiver, and you want to be a good pass catcher.
- 1:14:44Speaker 6: I think all our guys have the ability to pass protect.
- 1:14:47Speaker 6: Everybody's got their strengths and weaknesses. And then what we
- 1:14:50Speaker 6: try to do is put them in the best position
- 1:14:52Speaker 6: to be successful.
- 1:14:53Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:14:53Speaker 7: All right.
- 1:14:55Speaker 1: If that sounded like the answer was a little bit ambiguous,
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: that's because the blanket covers all of those guys as
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: to what they can do. Speaking of the ambiguous, one
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: more from Sark. He was asked about the Mississippi State draft.
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: quarterback situation and what might happen on Saturday and how
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: that might actually affect the way they defend it, whether
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: it's going to be Billy Puckett, who's done the playing there,
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: or A.J. Swan, who they've tried to get ready. He's
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: the grad transfer, came in from Appalachian State. So as
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: you heard earlier in the press conference, as you heard,
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: or rather from the SEC teleconference, as you heard earlier
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: from Jeff Levy, he didn't commit to either one and
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: said they'll make a decision on Saturday and then want to.
- 1:15:48Speaker 2: Have the meeting Friday night and talk about that. And
- 1:15:50Speaker 2: all that makes sense as well.
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: Sarg then was asked, how does that affect what he's
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: trying to do in preparing his defense to play whichever quarterback?
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: And does it really make a big difference in terms
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: of how he goes about preparing the for whichever quarterback
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: runs out there to take the snap on Saturday.
- 1:16:12Speaker 6: Yeah as I was touching on earlier Jeff Levy's going
- 1:16:14Speaker 6: to run Jeff Levy's offense and I think that's you
- 1:16:17Speaker 6: know what you have to prepare for and and that's
- 1:16:20Speaker 6: the tempo of which they operate that's the big splits
- 1:16:23Speaker 6: of which they operate that's the elite speed they have
- 1:16:25Speaker 6: on the perimeter that's the commitment to the run game
- 1:16:28Speaker 6: as we touched on with Bothwell and then that's the
- 1:16:30Speaker 6: RPOs and then the shots and so I'm not going
- 1:16:34Speaker 6: to say irregardless of who the quarterback is, they're going
- 1:16:36Speaker 6: to have strengths and weaknesses that they play to. But ultimately,
- 1:16:41Speaker 6: we have to defend the levy offense and then react
- 1:16:45Speaker 6: to whomever it is at quarterback.
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: All right, we'll obviously have some more coming up on
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: Longhorn Football as well. But up next, it's back to
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: talking the NFL, Cowboys and Texans, and a lot more
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: as we continue on a Yacht Rock Wednesday here on
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: Sports Radio AM 1300 The Zone and the iHeartRadio app.
- 1:17:04Speaker 3: And only a fool would say that.
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: I think I've probably had that said to me a
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: few times, only a fool would say that.
- 1:17:12Speaker 2: Said it to other people too.
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: Because we all say foolish things from time to time, right?
- 1:17:17Speaker 2: It happens.
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: Here on the Yacht Rock Wednesday on Sports Radio 1300 Zone. Now,
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: if you hear from the coaches on the SEC teleconference,
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: chances are you're not going to hear that much foolish talk,
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: if any, in fact. Most are going to be pretty
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: closely guarded, keep their cards close to the vest. And
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: that was the case with Jeff Levy, the head coach
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: of Mississippi State. Here's some more from him, starting off
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: with– the fact that they've had this rash of injuries.
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: And he's asked if there's any kind of common thread,
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: which is a regular question that media ask when one
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: team goes through a rash of injuries.
- 1:17:58Speaker 8: That's part of this league. That's part of this game.
- 1:18:01Speaker 8: You do. You've got to catch a couple of breaks
- 1:18:04Speaker 8: from that standpoint inside this conference. So that is. You
- 1:18:09Speaker 8: step into the arena. That's part of it. Our guys
- 1:18:11Speaker 8: understand that. But again, great opportunity for other guys to
- 1:18:13Speaker 8: be able to go step up and go Man, put
- 1:18:16Speaker 8: great things on tape.
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: Okay, then he was asked what really leapt off the
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: page at him about that Texas Ole Miss game. Of course,
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: last Saturday, the Longhorns had the 24-3 lead, only to
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: see Ole Miss come back and tie it, and then
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: Texas counter late to get the lead and hold on
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: at the tail end.
- 1:18:33Speaker 8: There was huge swings inside that game for Texas to
- 1:18:37Speaker 8: have all the momentum to lose it, then to be
- 1:18:39Speaker 8: able to come back and find a way to win.
- 1:18:43Speaker 8: There were just huge swings back and forth in all
- 1:18:46Speaker 8: three phases of the game. Again, to me, when you
- 1:18:49Speaker 8: watch the tape, you see a football team that has, again,
- 1:18:52Speaker 8: an incredible roster. They are incredibly well coached, and there's
- 1:18:57Speaker 8: great challenge in all three phases with how they do
- 1:19:01Speaker 8: what they do.
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: Then he was asked about how his team really handled
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: all the unfortunate things news surrounding Kamario Taylor's season-ending injury
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: and resulting surgery?
- 1:19:14Speaker 8: Our guys, of course, man, heartbroken for K-1 and ready
- 1:19:19Speaker 8: to support him in every way that we can.
- 1:19:21Speaker 7: And we will do that, as we all know.
- 1:19:24Speaker 8: On the flip side, our guys understand that, man, Saturday night, 6.30,
- 1:19:29Speaker 8: what an incredible opportunity for our football team and our program.
- 1:19:32Speaker 8: And so that's what this thing's about. Again, each week
- 1:19:35Speaker 8: is its own week. And for us, Being able to
- 1:19:39Speaker 8: go play the best we've played all year, Saturday night
- 1:19:41Speaker 8: at 6.30, that's our focus.
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: And then one other from him with regard to the
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: timeline on this announcement of Kamario Taylor, because he just
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: underwent the surgery this morning. So a reporter was curious
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: as to why they chose to have to make the
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: announcement at that time.
- 1:20:01Speaker 8: We will. That'll be on Saturday. I'm going to let
- 1:20:03Speaker 8: these guys go through no sweat tomorrow, fast Friday. uh,
- 1:20:07Speaker 8: be able to be at the hotel, walk through, do
- 1:20:09Speaker 8: those things. And then, uh, that'll happen Saturday evening.
- 1:20:12Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: And, and that's obvious in reference to who gets the start,
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: whether it's Billy Puckett, uh, or AJ Swan. And as
- 1:20:20Speaker 1: we heard from, uh, Neil Price, the play-by-play voice of
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: Mississippi state in the two o'clock hour, um, You know,
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: that thing has been pretty close. And Swan had been
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: banged up as well. And that's part of the reason
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: why he hadn't been able to get the reps. But
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: it's probably going to be, it's going to be one
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: of those two guys come Saturday on that. All right,
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: let's jump to the NFL. And we'll hear a little
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: bit from Brian Schottenheimer, who, of course, had the opportunity
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: to come back. And Schottenheimer, by the way, sounded, I
- 1:20:55Speaker 1: don't know if, refreshed is the right word, but he
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: sounded maybe a little more upbeat than what we heard
- 1:21:02Speaker 1: in the post game with the loss on, I mean,
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: with the win on Monday night. And so he was
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: asked about some additional things. And one of those things
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: was the play of Tyler Smith on the offensive line.
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: And was this one of his best games?
- 1:21:19Speaker 15: Yeah, finally I think you see Tyler's much more comfortable
- 1:21:22Speaker 15: playing football. He missed those couple weeks, but yes, I
- 1:21:25Speaker 15: thought he played really well, along with the rest of
- 1:21:27Speaker 15: the line. I mean, it's a good front. I mean,
- 1:21:29Speaker 15: there's nothing wrong with their defense. Their defense is an
- 1:21:32Speaker 15: outstanding group. A ton of respect for them and Vic
- 1:21:36Speaker 15: and the way they play. Clint Hurt, the defensive line coach,
- 1:21:38Speaker 15: is outstanding. But again, I'm very proud of our ability
- 1:21:42Speaker 15: to own the line of scrimmage with the way we
- 1:21:43Speaker 15: ran the ball, but also the way we protected Dak.
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: Next shot, he was asked about Joey Porter Jr. and
- 1:21:50Speaker 1: his continued work there in the secondary. And with all
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: the changes that have happened for him, for the team,
- 1:21:57Speaker 1: the injuries, and all that other stuff, is it his
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: impression that Porter's able to keep things even keeled throughout
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: all this?
- 1:22:05Speaker 2: He doesn't change. He's the same guy every day.
- 1:22:07Speaker 15: A little quieter and reserved, but goes out to work
- 1:22:11Speaker 15: and puts in a full day's work and dealing with
- 1:22:14Speaker 15: some bumps and bruises and things like that. But um
- 1:22:18Speaker 15: you know he answers the bell every time and that's
- 1:22:20Speaker 15: for practice and games and uh you can tell he grew.
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: Up in a football family back to the offensive line
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: this offensive line play has been approved improved of late
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: and how that could change a lot of things in
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: the way that shotty calls the game and the way
- 1:22:36Speaker 1: they execute.
- 1:22:38Speaker 15: I think the energy is real you feel it like
- 1:22:40Speaker 15: i said when you're calling runs and you're watching the
- 1:22:42Speaker 15: line of scrimmage you could see the forward progress that
- 1:22:45Speaker 15: we were making. You know, we were controlling the line
- 1:22:48Speaker 15: of scrimmage. We were knocking them back. And as a
- 1:22:51Speaker 15: play caller, it's a lot easier to call those plays
- 1:22:53Speaker 15: when you see that. Reminds me a lot of the
- 1:22:57Speaker 15: offensive lines. We've had some really good offensive lines in
- 1:22:59Speaker 15: my career. And maybe one of the best was the
- 1:23:02Speaker 15: Jets years that we were really, really good under Rex.
- 1:23:05Speaker 2: And, you know.
- 1:23:07Speaker 15: DeBrickshaw Ferguson, Nick Mangold, Brandon Moore, Damian Woody, you know.
- 1:23:12Speaker 2: And there's some, things that remind me of that group.
- 1:23:16Speaker 1: There still is, however, the need to improve defensively, and
- 1:23:20Speaker 1: for that matter, says Shottie, a need to start faster defensively.
- 1:23:24Speaker 15: We talked about that actually this morning, about some different things.
- 1:23:27Speaker 15: A lot of different things. We're looking at all kinds
- 1:23:30Speaker 15: of options. We're not sure how exactly it's going to
- 1:23:32Speaker 15: play out, but we need to be better early in games.
- 1:23:36Speaker 15: But there's been different reasons. The start of Houston was
- 1:23:38Speaker 15: different than the start of last night. But again, we're
- 1:23:41Speaker 15: looking at all those things.
- 1:23:43Speaker 2: Factors.
- 1:23:44Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: And you can bet the Texans are doing likewise coming
- 1:23:47Speaker 1: off the disheartening loss at home to the Giants after
- 1:23:51Speaker 1: they'd won back-to-back games. And so D'Amico Ryans has asked
- 1:23:55Speaker 1: that question. He was asked a lot during the 0-4 start.
- 1:23:58Speaker 3: Is it scheme?
- 1:23:59Speaker 2: Is it execution? Combination? What's his take on that?
- 1:24:03Speaker 11: The execution piece, every play that we run, everything that
- 1:24:07Speaker 11: we do, there's a rule tied to it. There's a
- 1:24:10Speaker 11: technique tied to it. And every play you have to
- 1:24:14Speaker 11: go out and execute those things something you have to
- 1:24:17Speaker 11: do it the proper way to be in position to
- 1:24:19Speaker 11: make a play right whether it's in the run game
- 1:24:22Speaker 11: and you're getting blocked from inside out how are you
- 1:24:25Speaker 11: using your hands your feet to punch a block get
- 1:24:28Speaker 11: off a block finish it and go make that play
- 1:24:31Speaker 11: it's a coverage technique like where your eyes and coverage
- 1:24:35Speaker 11: where's your Where are you contacting the guy when you
- 1:24:38Speaker 11: can within five yards to disrupt the timing.
- 1:24:41Speaker 5: Of the route?
- 1:24:42Speaker 11: Where's your leverage when the route is upfield? Are you
- 1:24:44Speaker 11: outside leverage? Are you inside leverage? Do we have help
- 1:24:46Speaker 11: over the top or not? So all of those, it's
- 1:24:49Speaker 11: a lot of little key things that no one likes
- 1:24:52Speaker 11: to talk about, but all of those things are important.
- 1:24:55Speaker 11: that's the details of what we do when it comes
- 1:24:58Speaker 11: to when it comes to defense offense as well i
- 1:25:01Speaker 11: mean we run the football there's a scheme designed for
- 1:25:04Speaker 11: how we go through and how we should execute how
- 1:25:07Speaker 11: we should block blocking inside out and finishing the proper
- 1:25:11Speaker 11: way proper hat placement all of those things there's a
- 1:25:13Speaker 11: lot of ton of detail that goes into all those plays.
- 1:25:16Speaker 1: He was then asked with regard to Nico Collins and
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: the importance of trying to.
- 1:25:23Speaker 2: Get him the ball. Is there some room for adjustment
- 1:25:25Speaker 2: to get the ball in his hands more?
- 1:25:27Speaker 11: It was the game flow and how the game worked
- 1:25:29Speaker 11: out for us. It's hard to try to force the
- 1:25:32Speaker 11: ball when we're not sustaining drives. When you're going three
- 1:25:36Speaker 11: and out, what do we want to do? We got
- 1:25:38Speaker 11: to be able to win third down there. I think
- 1:25:40Speaker 11: we win third down and we have more plays. We
- 1:25:43Speaker 11: have more shots on goal. So the key is how
- 1:25:46Speaker 11: do we start better on first and second down to
- 1:25:50Speaker 11: have manageable thirds. And then when we get to third down,
- 1:25:52Speaker 11: we have to be able to convert those.
- 1:25:55Speaker 1: So there's some football stuff for you. Now let's go
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: back to baseball and the World Series. And Kevin Cash,
- 1:26:03Speaker 1: able to live to play another day, thought that Nick
- 1:26:07Speaker 1: Martinez's relief job was so important. And so then the
- 1:26:12Speaker 1: follow-up question was, okay, since he normally would have been
- 1:26:15Speaker 1: the Game 5 starter, first of all, your thoughts on him.
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: And then secondly, what do you have to go through
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: to figure out how the pitching plan is going to work?
- 1:26:23Speaker 13: I can't say enough about Nick Martinez and the contributions
- 1:26:26Speaker 13: he's made all season long. And then coming in on
- 1:26:29Speaker 13: short rest today, giving us two really solid innings. Also,
- 1:26:32Speaker 13: Brian Baker, if you guys follow us, know that we
- 1:26:34Speaker 13: generally keep baked to one inning, but just felt like
- 1:26:37Speaker 13: we got to win this game.
- 1:26:39Speaker 5: His two innings were very helpful.
- 1:26:42Speaker 13: We're going to get together here after this session and
- 1:26:44Speaker 13: sit down and talk about pitching.
- 1:26:46Speaker 5: Got to check who's available.
- 1:26:47Speaker 13: I'm guessing most guys are going to say they're capable
- 1:26:50Speaker 13: of an inning or more. being, you know, game five
- 1:26:54Speaker 13: of the World Series, but nothing has been decided yet.
- 1:26:57Speaker 1: Next, talking about that bullpen, Baker and Boozer and the
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: relief innings, and Baker, you know, Brian Baker's normally just
- 1:27:03Speaker 1: a one-inning guy, but he gave them more, and Boozer, and,
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: you know, all hands on deck, everybody's got their spikes on,
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: Johnny Holstaff, however you want to categorize it it's as
- 1:27:17Speaker 1: must win as must win gets if you don't win
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: season's over that's truly must win so how about the
- 1:27:24Speaker 1: pitching mentality.
- 1:27:25Speaker 13: Look we're going to need everybody we're going to need
- 1:27:27Speaker 13: to be all hands on deck we've put ourselves in
- 1:27:29Speaker 13: a position or the brewers have put us in this
- 1:27:31Speaker 13: position where we're going to need everybody to be able
- 1:27:33Speaker 13: to contribute And I know whatever's taking place leading into
- 1:27:37Speaker 13: today's game, that does not deter, deter, uh, their thought
- 1:27:41Speaker 13: process or their confidence in themselves and not.
- 1:27:44Speaker 5: Surprised at all.
- 1:27:45Speaker 13: Booker, uh, Boozer was able to come in, do his thing.
- 1:27:48Speaker 13: And then Baker, I think he was itching to pitch
- 1:27:51Speaker 13: in a world series game. I'm glad he's got an
- 1:27:52Speaker 13: opportunity to do that. Now I'm really happy that he's
- 1:27:55Speaker 13: got an opportunity to potentially have another one.
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: Uh, on the Pat Murphy and, uh, the, uh, Brewers manager, um,
- 1:28:04Speaker 1: You know, the way that Ashby has been so incredible
- 1:28:09Speaker 1: out of the pen, it was a surprise to some
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: people when he went.
- 1:28:12Speaker 2: To relieve him.
- 1:28:13Speaker 1: So, you know, did he have some conversation with him
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: as he pulled him from the game?
- 1:28:17Speaker 7: He was disappointed he was coming out, you know.
- 1:28:21Speaker 14: But I said, we've got to be mindful of your health,
- 1:28:25Speaker 14: and we've got to be mindful of, you know, winning
- 1:28:28Speaker 14: the whole thing. If you're going to win the whole thing,
- 1:28:30Speaker 14: you have to, you know— You have to understand that
- 1:28:37Speaker 14: we can't you know drain you today or risk injury
- 1:28:40Speaker 14: today i mean he's thrown a lot but um and
- 1:28:42Speaker 14: luckily we got out of that situation and it didn't
- 1:28:45Speaker 14: hurt us.
- 1:28:46Speaker 1: And then one more from pat murphy and uh this
- 1:28:50Speaker 1: was about uh the rookie we were talking about cooper
- 1:28:53Speaker 1: pratt and what he did with the home run and
- 1:28:56Speaker 1: You know, did Pratcham something else on that? And you've
- 1:28:59Speaker 1: had all of these close calls and games, you know,
- 1:29:02Speaker 1: out safe calls and catches made and a lot of
- 1:29:06Speaker 1: really close calls.
- 1:29:07Speaker 2: And what has this World Series showed him about that?
- 1:29:10Speaker 7: I mean, this kid responds to everything. You know what
- 1:29:13Speaker 7: I mean?
- 1:29:13Speaker 14: He had some hiccups on defense and he responded with
- 1:29:16Speaker 14: a huge walk-off hit. You know, he also almost had
- 1:29:19Speaker 14: a winning hit tonight. He had a great night at
- 1:29:21Speaker 14: the plate. The best of anybody at the plate was
- 1:29:24Speaker 14: really locked in and, you know, There's a caught stealing
- 1:29:28Speaker 14: there that's, you know what I mean, really, really close.
- 1:29:31Speaker 14: Maybe in season that's a stands.
- 1:29:34Speaker 7: You know what I mean? Who knows?
- 1:29:36Speaker 14: We had a couple things not go our way in
- 1:29:39Speaker 14: terms of calls. But I'm not saying they were wrong.
- 1:29:43Speaker 14: I'm just saying, you know, we had a couple things really...
- 1:29:46Speaker 14: Running out of the baseline there, the first run we
- 1:29:48Speaker 14: gave up or second run, whatever. I mean, come on,
- 1:29:51Speaker 14: look at it. The ump didn't have it that way,
- 1:29:54Speaker 14: and that's part of it. We got some benefit of
- 1:29:57Speaker 14: some things too sometimes. But yeah, I just want to
- 1:30:00Speaker 14: credit Tampa for the way they battled and stayed in there.
- 1:30:06Speaker 1: So there's some thoughts with game five of the World
- 1:30:09Speaker 1: Series coming up tonight. Obviously, if Tampa Bay wins, there
- 1:30:13Speaker 1: will be a game six in Milwaukee on Friday night.
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: Tomorrow would be a travel day. Tomorrow's a travel day
- 1:30:19Speaker 1: for the Brewers regardless. If they win tonight, they wrap
- 1:30:22Speaker 1: it up and they go home tomorrow and then you
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: start setting up your parade plans and all that stuff.
- 1:30:27Speaker 1: And by the way, I did think it was kind
- 1:30:28Speaker 1: of interesting that Robin Yount had told Joe Davis some
- 1:30:33Speaker 1: stuff about that parade they had after they lost game
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: seven to the Cardinals back in 1982. And it was
- 1:30:38Speaker 1: still a great memorable moment, but disheartening because they'd lost it.
- 1:30:44Speaker 1: You know, Milwaukee's won one world championship in baseball, and
- 1:30:47Speaker 1: that was the Milwaukee Braves back in 1957, nine years
- 1:30:50Speaker 1: before they moved to Atlanta. And the Brewers had never
- 1:30:53Speaker 1: won one. In fact, this is only the second time
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: they've been in the World Series. They're hopeful and anticipating
- 1:31:00Speaker 1: a parade, but still need one more win. So we'll
- 1:31:02Speaker 1: see what happens tonight. If Tampa Bay wins tonight, then
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: the series shifts back to Milwaukee for game six on
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: Friday night.
- 1:31:11Speaker 7: All right.
- 1:31:12Speaker 1: I'm going to head over to the UT campus to
- 1:31:13Speaker 1: get ready for our recording this evening with Steve Sarkeesian
- 1:31:17Speaker 1: for Longhorn Weekly. Quandre Diggs is our special guest this week. Now,
- 1:31:21Speaker 1: you'll hear the program tomorrow at 545. 5.45 to go
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: to 6.45.
- 1:31:30Speaker 7: Why?
- 1:31:31Speaker 2: Because at 6.45, we have the pregame.
- 1:31:34Speaker 1: Of the Texas Women's Exhibition game, which we told you
- 1:31:36Speaker 1: earlier is no longer against Eastern New Mexico. It's against Baylor.
- 1:31:42Speaker 1: Eastern New Mexico did not have enough healthy players. The
- 1:31:45Speaker 1: only thing I was really looking forward to other than
- 1:31:47Speaker 1: calling the game was the fact of saying the team
- 1:31:49Speaker 1: name of Eastern New Mexico, the Zias, Z-I-A-S, Zias. That
- 1:31:54Speaker 1: was the team name, but No Zs, Lady Bears. So
- 1:31:59Speaker 1: Texas will play Baylor tomorrow night. Again, free admission at
- 1:32:03Speaker 1: Moody Center and free parking as well. So that's pretty cool.
- 1:32:06Speaker 3: The female version of the Greyhounds, right? That's right.
- 1:32:10Speaker 1: But it'll be the Lady Bears instead. So Longhorn Weekly
- 1:32:16Speaker 1: with Coach Sark will air at 545 and it'll go
- 1:32:18Speaker 1: to 645. And then at 645, we'll start with the
- 1:32:20Speaker 1: pregame for Texas. and Baylor and Exhibition Women's Basketball from
- 1:32:30Speaker 1: Moody Center. So, because I'm heading over to record the
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: show with Sark, Jay Kerman will take you on the
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: back half of this hour to close out today's edition
- 1:32:41Speaker 1: of the program, and I'll talk to you tomorrow afternoon
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: at 2 o'clock right here on Sports Radio AM 13
- 1:32:45Speaker 1: Under the Zone and the IR Radio app.
- 1:32:52Speaker 4: We've got a couple segments to go here on AM
- 1:32:54Speaker 4: 1300 The Zone. Jay Kerman here taking you the rest
- 1:32:57Speaker 4: of the way. Craig is on his way to campus
- 1:33:00Speaker 4: to record this week's episode of Longhorn Weekly with Coach Sark.
- 1:33:05Speaker 4: We'll talk a couple of college football notes here in
- 1:33:08Speaker 4: this segment. The SEC schedule this week starting in the
- 1:33:12Speaker 4: afternoon window. Auburn goes to Vaught-Hemingway Stadium to take on
- 1:33:17Speaker 4: 12th ranked Ole Miss. We know the Rebels, and we
- 1:33:20Speaker 4: talked about the college football playoff bubble picture with Heather
- 1:33:25Speaker 4: Dinnage's reporting.
- 1:33:26Speaker 3: On that last hour.
- 1:33:28Speaker 4: If Ole Miss, if the playoff started today, Ole Miss
- 1:33:32Speaker 4: would be in. But they probably have to win out,
- 1:33:34Speaker 4: run the table the rest of the way. That starts
- 1:33:37Speaker 4: with a matchup with the Auburn Tigers. Certainly helps Ole
- 1:33:40Speaker 4: Miss to have that game at home after having to
- 1:33:42Speaker 4: play in Austin last week. That is at 1145. Then
- 1:33:46Speaker 4: you've got Florida-Georgia. The kickoff at 2.30 there on ABC.
- 1:33:50Speaker 4: They're playing it at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. And South Carolina,
- 1:33:56Speaker 4: Oklahoma is on the afternoon slate. Texas and Mississippi State
- 1:34:00Speaker 4: with that 6.30 TV time slot, the 6.35. Potential 640
- 1:34:06Speaker 4: kickoff at DKR. And then at night in Fayetteville, you've
- 1:34:09Speaker 4: got Missouri visiting Arkansas. There was some controversy, though, over
- 1:34:15Speaker 4: the night slot next week, where Georgia Ole Miss drew
- 1:34:20Speaker 4: the ABC primetime slot, pushing another marquee matchup between playoff hopefuls,
- 1:34:26Speaker 4: maybe Seattle. even a playoff eliminator, depending on who you ask,
- 1:34:30Speaker 4: Alabama and LSU pushing that game to 230. And this
- 1:34:35Speaker 4: came up during the SEC teleconference, which you heard soundbites
- 1:34:39Speaker 4: earlier in the show from both Steve Sarkeesian and Mississippi
- 1:34:42Speaker 4: State head coach Jeff Lebby. Here was Lane Kiffin. in
- 1:34:46Speaker 4: his turn on the Zoom call, when he was asked
- 1:34:48Speaker 4: about ESPN's afternoon kick for Alabama LSU. Remember, these two
- 1:34:53Speaker 4: teams have played at night every year since 2011. That
- 1:34:56Speaker 4: was the famous nine to six LSU win. Alabama would
- 1:35:00Speaker 4: then come back and win the national championship when they
- 1:35:03Speaker 4: got that opportunity for a rematch. Here's Kiffin on this
- 1:35:06Speaker 4: game being in the afternoon.
- 1:35:08Speaker 7: I mean, I was shocked.
- 1:35:09Speaker 2: I didn't even think to even like think about the time.
- 1:35:12Speaker 12: I just especially in 16 years, this game has been
- 1:35:16Speaker 12: a night here all the time, the last 16 years.
- 1:35:19Speaker 12: So I never even thought that it considered that it
- 1:35:23Speaker 12: wouldn't be at night. So I guess that's probably naive
- 1:35:26Speaker 12: of me. I was joking to Michael earlier, you know,
- 1:35:30Speaker 12: when people were saying, well, obviously the SEC wanted to
- 1:35:33Speaker 12: change this year from how it had been to, you know,
- 1:35:35Speaker 12: to give LSU less advantage of obviously how well LSU
- 1:35:40Speaker 12: plays at night and how intimidated is the player. And
- 1:35:42Speaker 12: I was like, well, Someone thinks the SEC wants us
- 1:35:45Speaker 12: to win this year after what's been going on. They
- 1:35:47Speaker 12: must have just been on Mars the last four months.
- 1:35:51Speaker 2: So I guess when I look at it that way,
- 1:35:54Speaker 2: I'm not surprised.
- 1:35:56Speaker 4: That's Lane Kiffin for you. Always has to get the
- 1:35:58Speaker 4: shots in at the SEC. Remember the first half of
- 1:36:01Speaker 4: the Clemson game? He went to the break after they were.
- 1:36:04Speaker 4: laying a smackdown on the Clemson Tigers, said, imagine what
- 1:36:06Speaker 4: we'd be doing if we had the pros. At the time,
- 1:36:09Speaker 4: it was those two former professional players who had signed
- 1:36:11Speaker 4: to practice squads and then ultimately didn't take the field
- 1:36:14Speaker 4: this year for LSU. He always likes to find that
- 1:36:17Speaker 4: some little edge to feel like everything's working against him
- 1:36:21Speaker 4: and his team.
- 1:36:22Speaker 3: And you know what? I guess you can't fault him
- 1:36:23Speaker 3: for that.
- 1:36:24Speaker 4: But come to think of it, they played an afternoon
- 1:36:26Speaker 4: game in Tuscaloosa in 2019.
- 1:36:28Speaker 7: You remember that?
- 1:36:29Speaker 4: Joe Burrow, Tua Tungabailoa, huge matchup offensive fireworks. I don't
- 1:36:33Speaker 4: think it'll take too much luster or too much of
- 1:36:35Speaker 4: the home field advantage away. I think the LSU fans
- 1:36:38Speaker 4: will have plenty of time to adequately prepare. with their
- 1:36:42Speaker 4: liquid courage in the stands for that game in Baton Rouge.
- 1:36:46Speaker 4: But that's a big matchup between two teams that, like
- 1:36:48Speaker 4: Heather Dinich pointed out earlier, are right now sitting on
- 1:36:52Speaker 4: the wrong side of the bubble because they both have
- 1:36:55Speaker 4: the good losses in their back pockets, but they need
- 1:36:58Speaker 4: to have a couple more ranked wins to kind of
- 1:37:01Speaker 4: latch on to. What if I were to tell you
- 1:37:04Speaker 4: that the number one team right now in terms of
- 1:37:07Speaker 4: strength of record in college football is the Kentucky Wildcats.
- 1:37:13Speaker 4: They played the eighth hardest schedule. They've got the one loss,
- 1:37:17Speaker 4: and that is the 45-17 home loss to Alabama.
- 1:37:18Speaker 7: That Is it?
- 1:37:22Speaker 4: They've won at Texas A & M. At South Carolina.
- 1:37:26Speaker 4: Obviously the win at home over LSU. The two point
- 1:37:28Speaker 4: conversion in overtime. Doing a lot of the heavy lifting
- 1:37:31Speaker 4: on a resume. That also includes wins at Oklahoma. And
- 1:37:34Speaker 4: a win at home over Vanderbilt. They're on by this week.
- 1:37:37Speaker 4: They will travel to Knoxville. To play in a game
- 1:37:41Speaker 4: that starts at 515. On ESPN. Next week against Tennessee.
- 1:37:46Speaker 4: So their schedule after that. Florida, Missouri and Louisville. So
- 1:37:51Speaker 4: it gets a little more difficult for Will Stein's squad.
- 1:37:53Speaker 4: They'll have to prove their staying power at the top
- 1:37:55Speaker 4: of this crowded and muddy SEC picture. Remember last week
- 1:38:00Speaker 4: on the program, Bill Connolly detailed so well for us
- 1:38:04Speaker 4: how the SEC was sort of facing a weekend where
- 1:38:10Speaker 4: the playoff picture would change and shake up a lot.
- 1:38:13Speaker 4: They were these sort of de facto eliminators with plenty
- 1:38:15Speaker 4: of second and third conference losses ready to be handed out.
- 1:38:19Speaker 4: I think we see a little bit of that in
- 1:38:21Speaker 4: the Big Ten this weekend. You got Wisconsin and Iowa.
- 1:38:26Speaker 4: Notre Dame is watching that game with eager eyes because
- 1:38:29Speaker 4: that's the best win right now that 41-13 win over
- 1:38:33Speaker 4: Wisco at Lambeau tough task on the road I was
- 1:38:36Speaker 4: actually favored in that one the total is only 36
- 1:38:39Speaker 4: and a half so expect that to be a game
- 1:38:42Speaker 4: played in the high teens or low 20s you've got
- 1:38:46Speaker 4: Minnesota traveling to Bloomington to take on Indiana. Both can
- 1:38:50Speaker 4: do a whole lot of damage to the other's resume there.
- 1:38:53Speaker 4: Northwestern at Oregon. The Ducks may already be out of
- 1:38:56Speaker 4: this thing with their three losses. Northwestern is six and
- 1:38:59Speaker 4: one overall, three and one in the Big Ten. They've
- 1:39:03Speaker 4: got to run the table coming into that game at
- 1:39:05Speaker 4: Ohio State, and then they can really start to make
- 1:39:08Speaker 4: some noise if they continue to play the way they
- 1:39:10Speaker 4: have in recent weeks.
- 1:39:12Speaker 3: Ohio State at.
- 1:39:12Speaker 4: USC, Craig mentioned earlier, he didn't see that one being
- 1:39:16Speaker 4: too much of a trouble spot for the Buckeyes, but
- 1:39:19Speaker 4: it is kind of a do-or-die game for the Trojans,
- 1:39:22Speaker 4: who have those two losses already, one at Wisconsin and
- 1:39:26Speaker 4: then the home loss to Oregon. Now, for most teams,
- 1:39:29Speaker 4: you'd say, well, that's too much to overcome. We can
- 1:39:32Speaker 4: toss the Trojans out to the side and say they're
- 1:39:34Speaker 4: not going to be in the field of 12 this year.
- 1:39:36Speaker 4: Except they've still got opportunity because who's left on their schedule?
- 1:39:40Speaker 3: Ohio State, Indiana, Maryland. That should be a win. And
- 1:39:44Speaker 3: then UCLA.
- 1:39:45Speaker 4: So they've got the three Big Ten contenders, Ohio State, Indiana, UCLA,
- 1:39:51Speaker 4: all in front of them. It's highly improbable, but it
- 1:39:56Speaker 4: is still there for USC.
- 1:39:58Speaker 3: And then Nebraska hosts Washington this week.
- 1:40:00Speaker 4: I don't think the Cornhuskers have much of a playoff
- 1:40:03Speaker 4: shot after their loss at Oregon last week. A little
- 1:40:06Speaker 4: revenge for Ryola, despite that one being a real defensive duel.
- 1:40:11Speaker 4: But the Cornhuskers would definitely be out with one more
- 1:40:14Speaker 4: loss there. Big 12, big weekend in terms of playoff
- 1:40:18Speaker 4: positioning as well. I view this Arizona-Texas Tech game, 11
- 1:40:23Speaker 4: o'clock ESPN. As kind of a loser leaves town, we'll
- 1:40:27Speaker 4: be talking about the winner of that game as a
- 1:40:29Speaker 4: potential playoff contender. And the loser, I just don't know
- 1:40:32Speaker 4: if there will be enough on the resume. Arizona at
- 1:40:36Speaker 4: number 22. Their only loss is on the road to
- 1:40:39Speaker 4: a BYU team that had LJ Martin, their star running back,
- 1:40:43Speaker 4: in the lineup. So if Arizona can beat Texas Tech,
- 1:40:45Speaker 4: they'll have a huge opportunity hosting Utah three weeks from
- 1:40:49Speaker 4: now to potentially make some noise.
- 1:40:51Speaker 3: Arizona's look pretty impressive.
- 1:40:53Speaker 4: The last three weeks, that 34-7 win over Cincinnati is
- 1:40:56Speaker 4: aging mighty well. And then you got Utah at Cincinnati.
- 1:41:01Speaker 4: Can the Bearcats back up their big win over Texas Tech?
- 1:41:05Speaker 4: And can Utah stay unbeaten to set up their big
- 1:41:08Speaker 4: rivalry matchup with BYU in a couple weeks? Lots of
- 1:41:10Speaker 4: good matchups to watch for in the Big 10 and
- 1:41:12Speaker 4: the Big 12 this week with playoff implications on what's
- 1:41:15Speaker 4: otherwise maybe a weaker SEC slate than what we'll see
- 1:41:18Speaker 4: the rest of the way. Back to wrap up the
- 1:41:20Speaker 4: show in just a moment here on AM 1300 The Zone.
