- 0:08Speaker 1: Welcome them to the Favorites the podcast from the Volume
- 0:12Speaker 1: Podcast Network. I am Chad moment. It's Thursday, which means
- 0:16Speaker 1: it is time to narrow down the NFL board. Me
- 0:22Speaker 1: and my bff, my companion, my compadre Professional Better Simon Hunter.
- 0:27Speaker 1: That's what we're gonna do. We're trying to narrow down
- 0:30Speaker 1: the board to get to the five, six, seven picks
- 0:34Speaker 1: that we love. Come Sunday morning, those will be our
- 0:36Speaker 1: five best. We're gonna put him in the free Award
- 0:39Speaker 1: winning Action Network app. Sione will also share them on Twitter. Simon,
- 0:44Speaker 1: you are a professional. Better. Action Network is a company
- 0:47Speaker 1: that serves people interested in sports betting with content, data,
- 0:51Speaker 1: research picks. As I said, download of Free Award Winning
- 0:53Speaker 1: Action Network app. Such an interesting week, Simon, how are
- 0:58Speaker 1: you buddy? Good buddy? Yeah, this is uh, this is
- 1:01Speaker 1: an ugly week, but it's one of those weeks I
- 1:03Speaker 1: kind of love where I opened up my you know,
- 1:06Speaker 1: my different apps today night I saw these lines and
- 1:08Speaker 1: I was like, uh, and now here we're on Thursday.
- 1:11Speaker 1: I'm just like, man, I kind of love these games.
- 1:13Speaker 1: So that's usually how it goes with these uh week
- 1:16Speaker 1: five weeks six kind of bets. Yeah, I've been thinking
- 1:18Speaker 1: the same thing, Like Sunday night, Monday morning, I didn't
- 1:20Speaker 1: like anything, and now all of a sudden, I'm seeing
- 1:23Speaker 1: opportunities galore. I want to remind people we've been talking
- 1:26Speaker 1: about this book, It's Better to Be Feared on the
- 1:27Speaker 1: podcast for the past few months. Uh. Seth Wickersham wrote it.
- 1:30Speaker 1: It's about the Patriots dynasty, Brady Belichick craft. I'm saying
- 1:35Speaker 1: this as a seven time author, four time bestseller. Chad
- 1:38Speaker 1: Milman wrote a book. It's as good as sports book
- 1:42Speaker 1: as you were going to read. We had Seth in
- 1:44Speaker 1: the podcast. He's gonna come up later in the show.
- 1:46Speaker 1: We're gonna talk about it signing, and I spoke to
- 1:47Speaker 1: him what was really interesting to me and why I
- 1:50Speaker 1: think Betters would be interested in this. He in the
- 1:52Speaker 1: book he talks a lot about mental strength, mental training, discipline,
- 1:59Speaker 1: all the things that Tom Brady has built his career on.
- 2:01Speaker 1: I think there's some credible opportunity to hear about that.
- 2:04Speaker 1: We got a lot to discuss, Like we said, that
- 2:06Speaker 1: board is turning our way. We had six, seven, eight
- 2:08Speaker 1: games that we liked. On Thursday, we will get to
- 2:13Speaker 1: um the big balls bet of the week, we will
- 2:19Speaker 1: get to a money line parlay the foxhold game from
- 2:22Speaker 1: this past week, where we're jumping into the foxhold Miami
- 2:25Speaker 1: is a double digit dogs. We will discuss that in
- 2:27Speaker 1: more depth. Our Simon says game was the Giants meeting.
- 2:30Speaker 1: Just go bet it right away. That line has already
- 2:32Speaker 1: moved from seven and a half down to seven. Still opportunity.
- 2:35Speaker 1: We're gonna talk about that too, and told the people
- 2:37Speaker 1: heading u up site they're not getting the best of
- 2:38Speaker 1: the number because they don't listen to the show until Saturday.
- 2:41Speaker 1: Go to the favorite podcast, subscribe and download on Tuesdays.
- 2:45Speaker 1: What can we do? People were giving these numbers out
- 2:47Speaker 1: on Tuesday. Subscribe to the show and download the show
- 2:50Speaker 1: on Tuesday. Man, before we get to anything else, we
- 2:52Speaker 1: gotta do sharp calls. Hello, who's there? I'm talking the Simon.
- 3:07Speaker 1: Please tell us the calls you received this week from
- 3:11Speaker 1: your professional betting buddies and how they responded to some
- 3:15Speaker 1: of what we discussed on Tuesday. A lot of ship talking.
- 3:18Speaker 1: They hate me that I didn't say I love the Bengals.
- 3:21Speaker 1: Apparently this has to be one of our five chat
- 3:24Speaker 1: I say a good a good ass kicking for me,
- 3:28Speaker 1: is maybe three or four pros of calling me up
- 3:30Speaker 1: and tell me I'm an idiot. Had ten ten different
- 3:32Speaker 1: ones hit me up either email, phone, call, or text,
- 3:35Speaker 1: tell me I'm an amateur, that I'm a coward, that
- 3:38Speaker 1: I said I need to Bengals three and a half.
- 3:40Speaker 1: I didn't give out Bengals out of three, Simon Hunter,
- 3:43Speaker 1: professional coward. That's shaping up to be to me, the
- 3:46Speaker 1: biggest pros Verse Show's game. The pros. I love this number.
- 3:51Speaker 1: That's why it's not going back to the three and
- 3:52Speaker 1: a half. That's why all the money in the world's
- 3:54Speaker 1: coming in on Green Bay and it's not moving. It's
- 3:57Speaker 1: just sitting there at three. So this this, uh, this
- 4:00Speaker 1: ain't gonna be a choice. Chad. I think we have
- 4:02Speaker 1: to put it in just because my honor is being
- 4:04Speaker 1: put on the line. Um. And the second one was
- 4:07Speaker 1: you were right. It's hard for me to say that, Chad,
- 4:09Speaker 1: but the pros were with you on the Chargers. Chad
- 4:14Speaker 1: Millman got something right. They hated my Brown's pick. They
- 4:18Speaker 1: think Baker was hurt. Came out today Baker is hurt
- 4:21Speaker 1: pretty much gave me a good as kick and saying that,
- 4:25Speaker 1: how did I not know that. How did I not
- 4:27Speaker 1: reach out the sources. I'm kind of missing one here
- 4:29Speaker 1: on the charges, but I just thought it was a
- 4:31Speaker 1: fishy line. That was the only reason I was so
- 4:32Speaker 1: scared of it. But yeah, now now we've had a point.
- 4:35Speaker 1: Now charge Chargers might be one of our five. But
- 4:38Speaker 1: I need to hear more and learn more about this
- 4:40Speaker 1: Baker injury because if this is for real and he's
- 4:42Speaker 1: going against that defense of the Chargers, yeah, I have
- 4:45Speaker 1: no doubt. Me and Chat are gonna love this comes
- 4:47Speaker 1: under Oh my god, dude, so we're gonna let's dig
- 4:50Speaker 1: in deeper. I had come around to the Browns and
- 4:53Speaker 1: was all over the Bengals with you even at three um,
- 4:55Speaker 1: so I'm glad to see everybody's still thinking about it
- 4:57Speaker 1: that way. Let's first talk about the Texans and the Patriots.
- 5:03Speaker 1: That number right now, Texans plus nine and a half
- 5:08Speaker 1: so ugly. But look, here's a system for you, right
- 5:11Speaker 1: are you ready? Here's something. I know you love the systems, Simon,
- 5:14Speaker 1: so I'm gonna give you one. Here's a system right
- 5:16Speaker 1: now since two thousand three NFL underdogs coming off of
- 5:22Speaker 1: three straight losses are covering at a fifty eight percent,
- 5:27Speaker 1: right as a sample size of well north of three
- 5:30Speaker 1: games covers the Texans, Dolphins, Eagles this week, and we
- 5:35Speaker 1: like it. For the Texans for sure, home dog. Only
- 5:38Speaker 1: one offensive lineman starter is practicing right now. For the Patriots,
- 5:43Speaker 1: they have injuries across the board, and again they sold
- 5:46Speaker 1: out completely to beat that Tom Brady in that game.
- 5:49Speaker 1: I know, people, I see the quarterback of Houston, Mills
- 5:52Speaker 1: is not that good. The kids terrible. He's not a starter.
- 5:55Speaker 1: This is more a bet on Houston's defense and this
- 5:57Speaker 1: and them having home field advantage where I know historically
- 6:01Speaker 1: Belichick his own the Houston team, but that was that
- 6:04Speaker 1: was with Brady. This is a rookie quarterback on the
- 6:06Speaker 1: road going to get to the team that's not as
- 6:08Speaker 1: terrible as they've looked the last couple of weeks. How
- 6:10Speaker 1: can we not chat? How can we not take this
- 6:12Speaker 1: big of one number again. If this was a lesson
- 6:14Speaker 1: that touchdown, maybe I'd hesitate about it, But no, crazy value.
- 6:18Speaker 1: This is gonna be in my money line, parlay my round, Robin.
- 6:21Speaker 1: This is gross. It's ugly. You love to bet these
- 6:24Speaker 1: ones because you get the ra opportunity. It's a rookie
- 6:26Speaker 1: on the road, that's favored by more than a touchdown.
- 6:28Speaker 1: You just historically you need to fade these positions. So
- 6:32Speaker 1: nothing Shange still love Houston, feel emit better about it
- 6:35Speaker 1: now that the Patriots have all these injuries to their
- 6:37Speaker 1: offensive line. Yeah, Patriots have a lot of offensive line injuries.
- 6:42Speaker 1: Professional betters especially had been unpacking the Bucks game seeing
- 6:46Speaker 1: a lot more holes in that offense than what was
- 6:49Speaker 1: revealed during the game. You wash away some of the hype.
- 6:53Speaker 1: You get back to reality that it's Mac Jones with
- 6:55Speaker 1: a banged up offensive line, and I think that you
- 6:57Speaker 1: can't run the ball either. Yeah, that's a new dread flag. Yeah,
- 7:01Speaker 1: so people really start to like it. I also feel
- 7:03Speaker 1: like we're seeing right now Sean Payton, Mike Tomlin, Bill Belichick.
- 7:08Speaker 1: They have historically been these guys who break the rules. Right.
- 7:13Speaker 1: You want to back Sean Payton off of a loss.
- 7:16Speaker 1: You want to back Mike Tomlin in a raw rod
- 7:18Speaker 1: Mike Tomlin spot. You want to back Bill Belichick in
- 7:22Speaker 1: these huge road favorite spots. Make the commitment towards a championship.
- 7:28Speaker 1: That's what our goal is eight hundred sixty third time.
- 7:32Speaker 1: But there are anomalies because those guys also had Drew
- 7:36Speaker 1: Brees since two thousand six, Ben Roethlisberger for the entirety
- 7:40Speaker 1: of his career, They had Tom Brady since two thousand
- 7:43Speaker 1: and one. So the numbers are all gonna be e skewed.
- 7:45Speaker 1: So now we're really going to find out this year.
- 7:47Speaker 1: Are these numbers because of the coaches in their scheme
- 7:50Speaker 1: or were they just riding the tale of a long
- 7:53Speaker 1: tale of these quarterbacks who put them in really good
- 7:55Speaker 1: spots and otherwise untenable positions for most coaches and most quarterbacks.
- 8:00Speaker 1: That's what we're gonna be trying to take advantage of
- 8:01Speaker 1: all these situations where people are gonna be betting on
- 8:03Speaker 1: old trends and things they used to see, and we're
- 8:06Speaker 1: hopefully gonna catch them, you know, in these positions where
- 8:09Speaker 1: it's like, now this number for this Patriots Houston game
- 8:12Speaker 1: should be seven, six and a half, it's eight and
- 8:14Speaker 1: a half. Nine because the respect of Belichick and what
- 8:16Speaker 1: he's done historically against rookie quarterbacks. But man, that's that's
- 8:21Speaker 1: a big, big number to back Mac Jones and no
- 8:25Speaker 1: run game. Yeah all right, Well, the other game that
- 8:28Speaker 1: I think we're not to talk about for the money
- 8:29Speaker 1: line and plays into this conversation the Dolphins against the Buccaneers.
- 8:35Speaker 1: Dolphins plus ten, We're gonna want to parlay the Dolphins
- 8:38Speaker 1: in the Texas. I know it's gross. Give me the
- 8:40Speaker 1: odds on parlaying right now, the Dolphins and the Texans
- 8:42Speaker 1: on the money line, it was twenty. It was like
- 8:44Speaker 1: twenty one to their money line. Parlay again, we're gonna go.
- 8:48Speaker 1: We're gonna go over a round robin this week. Those
- 8:50Speaker 1: two are definthly gonna be in there. I just just
- 8:52Speaker 1: situational plays like you just talked about. We have Miami
- 8:56Speaker 1: coming off three straight losses. I mean, say what you
- 8:59Speaker 1: want bupper set against these cornerbacks, he might he might
- 9:03Speaker 1: look like an All Star. I mean this is this
- 9:06Speaker 1: is a bad group right now for the Buccaneers. So
- 9:10Speaker 1: ten points. Miami's defense is way better. They're getting credit
- 9:14Speaker 1: for Brady doesn't have Grant. I I feel like people
- 9:17Speaker 1: don't get how big of a deal that is. We
- 9:18Speaker 1: saw it affect him in the red zone. They could
- 9:20Speaker 1: not finish these drives last week. If we have Xavier
- 9:23Speaker 1: Howard on, Mike Evans or you know, Godwin. I just
- 9:26Speaker 1: feel like there's enough pieces for this Miami deam to
- 9:28Speaker 1: keep us close. Where again, I had this power rate
- 9:31Speaker 1: at seven and a half, it opened at ten and
- 9:33Speaker 1: a half eleven. I thought I was getting three points
- 9:35Speaker 1: of value that you know, to me, that's huge. So
- 9:38Speaker 1: I've been on Miami. Gonna keep betting him. I'll take
- 9:41Speaker 1: him down eight and a half at this point, of course, Chad,
- 9:43Speaker 1: we're gonna have their money line a couple of bets
- 9:45Speaker 1: because again, this is a last possession kind of game.
- 9:48Speaker 1: We respect the hell at a time Brady in the Buccaneers,
- 9:51Speaker 1: but we don't respect that defense. And we see the
- 9:54Speaker 1: pieces that Miami has an offense. They could get Wattle
- 9:56Speaker 1: right in this game, to get Davante Parker right in
- 9:58Speaker 1: this game. This is just a nice matt for this
- 10:00Speaker 1: Miami team. So give me those points. Chat, we love it,
- 10:03Speaker 1: what fellas? I am sick of it. Okay, I can't
- 10:07Speaker 1: stand much more of this. It's a joke. It's a joke.
- 10:11Speaker 1: Love it, love it. I am feeling so confident putting
- 10:14Speaker 1: both the Texans and the Dolphins in our final five.
- 10:17Speaker 1: And that's a recipe for disaster, truly, it truly is.
- 10:20Speaker 1: That's why I like, I'm happy now if we do
- 10:21Speaker 1: end up with the charges in there because least we'll
- 10:23Speaker 1: have one smart favorite in there. And by the way,
- 10:26Speaker 1: we're gonna end up with the Giants, Browns, Texans, Dolphins,
- 10:28Speaker 1: and Bengals. I guarantee that's what we're going to end up.
- 10:32Speaker 1: I mean, we should just put it out there now.
- 10:34Speaker 1: Bengals is that's our big ball is better the week
- 10:38Speaker 1: big balls better the week. We're going in order. You
- 10:42Speaker 1: have a piece of paper, Yeah, I got all a
- 10:44Speaker 1: piece of paper right here. Listen to me. My Thursday
- 10:47Speaker 1: mornings have become my favorite morning of the week because
- 10:52Speaker 1: it's not a morning where I work out. I've I've
- 10:55Speaker 1: got my workouts to Monday, Wednesday and Friday. So I
- 10:59Speaker 1: and I have blocked out my calendar. I have blocked
- 11:01Speaker 1: out eight am to ten am on my calendar, and
- 11:04Speaker 1: it just says pod prep all I'm doing reading, listening
- 11:10Speaker 1: to podcasts like the Action Network podcast with Raybond and Stucky,
- 11:13Speaker 1: which I love, reading Brandon Anderson's column on Action network
- 11:18Speaker 1: dot Com about his leans for every game, just sort
- 11:22Speaker 1: of getting in the headspace so I can start to
- 11:25Speaker 1: refine and be ready for this podcast and also get
- 11:27Speaker 1: ready for talking to her later on in the on
- 11:30Speaker 1: the volume podcast with him. I get notes, i get organized,
- 11:33Speaker 1: I've got things in the Google doc I've got things
- 11:35Speaker 1: on paper. It's my favorite. It's my favorite two hours
- 11:37Speaker 1: of the week. Sounds amazing, It is so much fun.
- 11:41Speaker 1: Here's a game that we talked a lot about, a
- 11:43Speaker 1: lot of action going the other way, and I'm wondering
- 11:46Speaker 1: if you're still on the right side here. You loved
- 11:49Speaker 1: Carolina minus three and a half. You know that sometimes
- 11:53Speaker 1: I can be influenced by Ray Bond and Stucky on
- 11:55Speaker 1: their podcast. They so loved the goals in this spot
- 12:01Speaker 1: for every single for for on the field, for systems,
- 12:05Speaker 1: for precedent, for Jalen Hurts, for matchups. Do you still
- 12:09Speaker 1: love the Panthers? They probably just our number of nerds
- 12:11Speaker 1: and they just saw, you know what, Hurts is unbelievable
- 12:14Speaker 1: against the blitz Carolina Panthers, the highest blitzing team, exactly
- 12:19Speaker 1: what it was. No, So like I saw that number two. Um, yeah,
- 12:24Speaker 1: that's that's great. But that's like saying that, Okay, the
- 12:28Speaker 1: Carolina coach that coaches their defense is an idiot and
- 12:30Speaker 1: he can't look at the same data that all of
- 12:32Speaker 1: us nerds can pull up online and see. So Okay,
- 12:36Speaker 1: that's that's a fair reason to back them. My mine
- 12:39Speaker 1: more fading the Eagles here is just if you believe
- 12:42Speaker 1: in Carolina, you think they're a good team. They bounced
- 12:45Speaker 1: back after that loss. The Eagles a team we don't
- 12:48Speaker 1: think that's good, that has major holes on their defense. Again,
- 12:51Speaker 1: I think Hurts is a good quarterback. We talked. I
- 12:53Speaker 1: bet him to win m VB just because I saw
- 12:55Speaker 1: him putting up these fantasy numbers. The the guy. He
- 12:58Speaker 1: can put up crazy numbers ivery week. This defense has
- 13:01Speaker 1: major issues on this Eagles team. Dallas, I think they
- 13:04Speaker 1: gave up forty one and then they just gave up
- 13:05Speaker 1: forty again last week to Kansas City. Scary, scary, scary scary.
- 13:10Speaker 1: So I'm fine, we're not putting as one of our
- 13:12Speaker 1: best five, but I will still be back in the Panthers.
- 13:16Speaker 1: Just feels like a professional trap for the Eagles this week,
- 13:19Speaker 1: just like I think it opened up four and a
- 13:20Speaker 1: half five and now it's only down to three and
- 13:22Speaker 1: a half. So the pro money is coming heavy on
- 13:24Speaker 1: it a little bit like they're overlooking the major issues
- 13:28Speaker 1: on this Eagles team. So I can't hate it because
- 13:31Speaker 1: they literally just played Dallas and then they just played
- 13:33Speaker 1: since Kansas City Chiefs, so of course you would see
- 13:36Speaker 1: the Eagles bouncing back here. This is just a bet
- 13:38Speaker 1: on Carolina team. They played Grade at home, and I
- 13:41Speaker 1: like him in this position, so I'm still still been
- 13:43Speaker 1: in Carolina. All right, this is the past for me.
- 13:45Speaker 1: This cannot be in our final five. I'm much more
- 13:48Speaker 1: comfortable going with teams that haven't won any games and
- 13:52Speaker 1: have unproven quarterbacks and not very good coaches, uh than
- 13:56Speaker 1: going with a team that I actually think could end
- 13:58Speaker 1: up representing the NFC in this Super Bowl, in the
- 14:00Speaker 1: Carolina Panthers. So let me make that decision. Let me
- 14:03Speaker 1: be that rational. Yeah, I won't fight you on You know,
- 14:05Speaker 1: I love dogs, so anytime we passed on a favorite,
- 14:07Speaker 1: I'm fine with it. All right, let's get Tom bum
- 14:11Speaker 1: Bum Big Balls better. The week. I'm taking the Bengals
- 14:17Speaker 1: plus three against the Packers. Everything lines up here. You're
- 14:22Speaker 1: getting calls from your buddies saying you're a coward for
- 14:26Speaker 1: not taking the Bengals at three and saying you gotta
- 14:29Speaker 1: wait to get him at three and a half. We
- 14:31Speaker 1: got of the action coming in on the Packers right now.
- 14:38Speaker 1: This is telling us every system. Every matchup is saying,
- 14:43Speaker 1: take Joe Burrow. Joe Burrow, who says I want the
- 14:46Speaker 1: ball in my hands against the Patters. Secondary is now
- 14:49Speaker 1: without Jaggery Alexander, who's the only guy who's really keeping
- 14:52Speaker 1: that thing together. I think the Bengals going the money
- 14:54Speaker 1: line parly. I don't know what the thing. I'm just
- 14:57Speaker 1: terrified of this matchup. I love the angles, I love
- 15:00Speaker 1: the number. Like we talked about, I wanted three and
- 15:02Speaker 1: a half. Them calling me a coward. That's putting it nicely,
- 15:05Speaker 1: and it was much harsher than that. They wanted to
- 15:07Speaker 1: check my credentials at the door. It was kind of
- 15:09Speaker 1: one of those calls, Um, what did you say? It's
- 15:12Speaker 1: my nerves, sir. I just can't stand you anymore. Yeah,
- 15:16Speaker 1: you're just a goddamn color. I won't have song. We're
- 15:20Speaker 1: afraid to fight staking of this place of honor. Yeah,
- 15:25Speaker 1: we love, we love this number. It's a home dog.
- 15:29Speaker 1: I had this weird view of the Bengals that it's
- 15:32Speaker 1: skewed because of Zach Taylor. I just do not like
- 15:34Speaker 1: Zach Taylor. We talked about that. Coming into the year.
- 15:36Speaker 1: Jugo Burrow looks like the saving grace of that team.
- 15:40Speaker 1: We just talked about all the injuries the Packers after
- 15:42Speaker 1: that defense, I have faith that if this guy has
- 15:46Speaker 1: the ball and all we need is in to drive
- 15:48Speaker 1: the field, kick a field will either win it or
- 15:49Speaker 1: at least give us the push. I like it. I
- 15:52Speaker 1: just it's a smart number taking this plus three. Maybe
- 15:56Speaker 1: we'll see it this year with Green Bay that you know,
- 15:58Speaker 1: they're better at home then on the road kind of team,
- 16:01Speaker 1: and we saw them play a really close game with
- 16:03Speaker 1: the forty nine. Is now looking like they might be
- 16:06Speaker 1: that good of a team. Same with that Saints game,
- 16:09Speaker 1: but that was that was glaring. They literally got blown
- 16:12Speaker 1: up of the Saints week one. Then the following week
- 16:14Speaker 1: Detroit was beating them at halftime and then fell apart
- 16:16Speaker 1: in the second half. So again there's a bunch of
- 16:18Speaker 1: little red flags here with the Screen Bay team. And
- 16:21Speaker 1: I have no issue back in this Bengals team at
- 16:23Speaker 1: home and you know, at halftime and you were down
- 16:26Speaker 1: ten to Green Bay, and we just take a service like, goddamnit, Chad,
- 16:29Speaker 1: why do we do that to ourselves? But you know what,
- 16:31Speaker 1: we're not going to say that. You know, why tell me?
- 16:34Speaker 1: Because Joe Burrow's magic and he's gonna come back. Then
- 16:37Speaker 1: it's just a pro number. Like I, I just feel
- 16:39Speaker 1: like this is a smart bet. This is one of
- 16:41Speaker 1: these you make year and year out and you're gonna
- 16:44Speaker 1: hit it a hired clip than six percent. So I
- 16:46Speaker 1: got no problem making this our big balls. But of
- 16:48Speaker 1: the week me neither. I'm excited about it. Here's another one,
- 16:52Speaker 1: really interesting Saints Washington football team. We talked about this
- 16:56Speaker 1: the other day. Game opened it pick immediately the Saints
- 17:00Speaker 1: got bet up. We said we liked the Washington football
- 17:02Speaker 1: team of plus one and a half. It is now
- 17:05Speaker 1: at two in a lot of places. The lines moved up.
- 17:08Speaker 1: We're forty eight hours later. Have we reconsidered our position,
- 17:12Speaker 1: because there's a lot of things about the Saints and
- 17:14Speaker 1: the Saints defense that makes me think maybe we're spending
- 17:18Speaker 1: too much time thinking about Jameis Winston and what he
- 17:23Speaker 1: can do to funk up a bet, and not enough
- 17:25Speaker 1: about like you said, Sean Payton, like coaches are pretty smart.
- 17:30Speaker 1: Sean Payton is not letting Jamis Winston lose the game.
- 17:33Speaker 1: He is putting the ball in Taysom Hill's hand inside
- 17:35Speaker 1: the red zone. Their defense is scary good. Washington football
- 17:40Speaker 1: team's defense is twenty nine in the league and much much, much, much,
- 17:43Speaker 1: much much worse than we thought. And Taylor Heiniki, we
- 17:46Speaker 1: don't know what he is yet. Is he a rocket
- 17:48Speaker 1: ship Kurt Warner, undiscovered gem or is he like Ryan Fitzpatrick?
- 17:54Speaker 1: You know, magic moments mixed with crazy turnovers. Now do
- 17:58Speaker 1: you think Daiel Jones is a good quarterback at all? Chad?
- 18:02Speaker 1: I think he's mediocre. I think he's mediocre, and it
- 18:04Speaker 1: has moments, and I would still bet him on the road,
- 18:08Speaker 1: and I wouldn't mind putting our five. And we're gonna
- 18:10Speaker 1: talk about that, but I know the comparison you're gonna make.
- 18:12Speaker 1: Go ahead. No, My My big point is that this
- 18:14Speaker 1: Saints team that's supposed to be good, they just gave
- 18:17Speaker 1: up the most passing yards last week to the one
- 18:19Speaker 1: Daniel Jones, So he had I think forred yards passing
- 18:22Speaker 1: last week against the Saints defense. Something's going on there.
- 18:25Speaker 1: They got issues the fact that they didn't get up
- 18:28Speaker 1: at home in that game after the hurricane, like that
- 18:31Speaker 1: was her home opener, and they let the Giants come
- 18:34Speaker 1: back end up beating them in overtime. Scary, scary, scary
- 18:37Speaker 1: with the Saints team. I guess you're right. Maybe I
- 18:40Speaker 1: won't be putting too much on this Washington team at
- 18:42Speaker 1: two plus two, but I guarantee this is gonna be
- 18:45Speaker 1: a lot of a lot of teaser to love. This
- 18:46Speaker 1: is a great number to tease up. So give me
- 18:49Speaker 1: the six points, get it up to eight. This is
- 18:51Speaker 1: this is great. I'm happy to take Washington this position,
- 18:53Speaker 1: but yeah, I'm fine staying away from it. We're way
- 18:56Speaker 1: too make questions Washington front four. Um, they just have
- 18:59Speaker 1: not gotten home. They have not been the disruptors they
- 19:01Speaker 1: were last year. You gotta have major balls Betton uh
- 19:06Speaker 1: Ben Winston on the road here after what we saw
- 19:08Speaker 1: last week where he got replaced by Taysom Hill. So
- 19:11Speaker 1: I'm cool in my position in Washington, but yeah, as
- 19:14Speaker 1: our best five. Now, I've moved this out of probably
- 19:16Speaker 1: my top ten of bets on making this weekend. I agree,
- 19:19Speaker 1: it's not it's it's it's an ugly, ugly game. Yeah, ugly,
- 19:23Speaker 1: Like I'm so much more comfortable betting ugly with the
- 19:26Speaker 1: Bengals and Joe Burrow than I am betting ugly with
- 19:30Speaker 1: Taylor Heineke or Jameis. Winston's fair I'm more comfortable speaking
- 19:35Speaker 1: of betting ugly with Daniel Jones at plus seven on
- 19:41Speaker 1: the road against the Cowboys in an overinflated line. I'm
- 19:45Speaker 1: putting that in our top five. I'm getting like deja
- 19:47Speaker 1: vu flashbacks and then losing by ten to Dallas, and
- 19:50Speaker 1: I needed Danny Jones to drive the field to give
- 19:52Speaker 1: me a field goal and he couldn't do it. Because
- 19:54Speaker 1: it's Daniel Jones. He turned back into a pumpkin. But
- 19:57Speaker 1: still still betting. It's still taking the seven, had to
- 20:00Speaker 1: set six. So it's a good number. Divisional game. We
- 20:03Speaker 1: we always take the Giants in the road. This is
- 20:05Speaker 1: what we do with them. So yeah, we're inflated in
- 20:08Speaker 1: the fact that Dallas has just looked unstoppable the last
- 20:10Speaker 1: couple of weeks. So we might be stepping in front
- 20:13Speaker 1: of a train here, Chad, But at this number in
- 20:15Speaker 1: a divisional matchup, got no issue taking the Giants here. Well,
- 20:19Speaker 1: this is one of those spots. Look, we talked about
- 20:21Speaker 1: this on Tuesday. You uh, Sunday night Monday morning at
- 20:26Speaker 1: the Cowboys to win the Super Bowl. But the Cowboys
- 20:30Speaker 1: at some odds to have the best record in the
- 20:33Speaker 1: NFL and got the Giants in the same night at
- 20:36Speaker 1: seven and a half. Right, Well, there you go, and
- 20:38Speaker 1: like this, this is one of those weeks where you
- 20:41Speaker 1: start to learn a little bit about who the cowboys are.
- 20:46Speaker 1: You learn a little bit more about what models and
- 20:49Speaker 1: numbers mean in the long haul and in the long haul.
- 20:52Speaker 1: If you're doing this, then you gotta bet this number.
- 20:55Speaker 1: You can't just base it on what you think the
- 20:57Speaker 1: situation is this week. This is how these games play out.
- 21:01Speaker 1: Divisional games, the Giants on the road the past couple
- 21:04Speaker 1: of years long, bigger numbers than normal. Everything says bet
- 21:09Speaker 1: the Giants plus seven. We're gonna do it. We said
- 21:12Speaker 1: it to sign and says bet stick with it. All right,
- 21:15Speaker 1: let's talk about this Brown's Chargers game, because when we
- 21:19Speaker 1: talked about it on Tuesday, I said to you, we're
- 21:22Speaker 1: betting the Chargers. You said, the bookmakers are telling us something.
- 21:25Speaker 1: If everyone is looking at this with an eye test
- 21:27Speaker 1: of the Chargers of the right side of the bookmakers
- 21:29Speaker 1: are telling you something. And now you're getting feedback from
- 21:34Speaker 1: your buddies that we're idiots. Meanwhile, I've been doing more
- 21:37Speaker 1: research and feeling more and more comfortable with the Browns.
- 21:40Speaker 1: That's hilarious. I was. I love the Browns in this
- 21:43Speaker 1: position just because I love their defense and I just
- 21:46Speaker 1: love the way they've been playing and how this game
- 21:48Speaker 1: was gonna set up. But I can't do with the
- 21:50Speaker 1: Baker injury, because again, I the reason I like the
- 21:53Speaker 1: brown so much wasn't because of Baker, was because of
- 21:54Speaker 1: their running style and how it's going to perform against
- 21:56Speaker 1: this Chargers defense. You've literally tied the team with an
- 21:59Speaker 1: arm behind their back. So all we need to do
- 22:02Speaker 1: for the Chargers just stacked the box and try to
- 22:04Speaker 1: make Baker with one arm pass against us, which again
- 22:07Speaker 1: it's just throwing arm that got injured, I believe. So
- 22:10Speaker 1: I'm with you, chat like that's the thing. Like the
- 22:12Speaker 1: pros that reached out to me, they love this number
- 22:15Speaker 1: and they're saying we should take this up to three.
- 22:17Speaker 1: That's my job, Like, it's my job isn't to just
- 22:19Speaker 1: be so into my own system. I don't listen anyone else.
- 22:21Speaker 1: It's the when I get this information and pass it
- 22:23Speaker 1: along and said, you know what, I was missing something here.
- 22:26Speaker 1: Sure enough, it came out today that Baker had the injury.
- 22:28Speaker 1: So that's the thing. I don't have the resources a
- 22:31Speaker 1: lot of these old time guys have When they're reaching
- 22:33Speaker 1: out to me, they're giving me information. I need to
- 22:34Speaker 1: really listen to it because Ibs they're hitting it from,
- 22:36Speaker 1: you know, good information themselves. So I don't like doing it,
- 22:40Speaker 1: but I'm with you. This is like now becoming one
- 22:42Speaker 1: of my favorite players. If we haven't banged up Baker
- 22:45Speaker 1: Mayfield going against arguably a top three defense and the Chargers.
- 22:49Speaker 1: We have to take the charges here, don't we. Well,
- 22:52Speaker 1: the problem is even if the Chargers stacked the box,
- 22:56Speaker 1: their run defense is terrible. That's the that is the
- 23:01Speaker 1: one thing we know the Browns will be able to do.
- 23:04Speaker 1: So I love them. You love them because you're saying
- 23:07Speaker 1: the Browns will be one dimensional and the Chargers have
- 23:10Speaker 1: a chance to only focus on doing that. Love the
- 23:12Speaker 1: Browns coming in just because of that run game, the
- 23:14Speaker 1: fact that that that's all that Daily needs to prep
- 23:16Speaker 1: for now against this team, that's just again it ships
- 23:19Speaker 1: it back to the Chargers where this is just a
- 23:21Speaker 1: big advantage, especially now they know that Baker's hurt, like
- 23:24Speaker 1: that's out in public information now. It's it's just a
- 23:27Speaker 1: bad it's just a bad set up for this Browns team.
- 23:30Speaker 1: So are we saying we want to put the Chargers
- 23:31Speaker 1: in Yeah? Wow, Oh my goodness, all right, I love that.
- 23:37Speaker 1: We are making a wise guy play here. We are
- 23:39Speaker 1: making the wise guy play because this is what the
- 23:41Speaker 1: guides in Vegas are telling us to do. I can't
- 23:43Speaker 1: believe it. Those are the games that we all that
- 23:45Speaker 1: that we talked about the most Dolphins, Texans, Giants, Chargers, Bengals,
- 23:53Speaker 1: the Cincinnati Bengals game roaring back right now, there are
- 24:00Speaker 1: five am I am I misinterpreting anything. I like that far.
- 24:04Speaker 1: Five Bills Chiefs. You said you like the Chiefs of
- 24:07Speaker 1: two and a half. We like the Bills at three
- 24:08Speaker 1: and a half. If it's on three, then there's no
- 24:10Speaker 1: real advantage getting a lot of research and rumblings listening
- 24:14Speaker 1: to Stucky and Raybund on the Action Network pod Go subscribe,
- 24:16Speaker 1: go download, rate review five stars about how they love
- 24:20Speaker 1: the Bills in this spot. Of course they do. Everyone
- 24:23Speaker 1: loves the fucking Bills on the spot set. The Bills
- 24:25Speaker 1: have looked better, they've played better, they have the better offense.
- 24:31Speaker 1: The Bills. Make something your hand on, something's out, throw
- 24:36Speaker 1: your hand back the Bills. I'm making it happen. Man,
- 24:41Speaker 1: that you can attest to it. Josh Allen just has
- 24:43Speaker 1: not looked right yet this year. Again, their team has
- 24:46Speaker 1: been winning, but he's had little hiccups, like again that
- 24:49Speaker 1: game they started against Houston, his first pass was interception.
- 24:51Speaker 1: You just had little things like that where I love
- 24:54Speaker 1: Josh and I love this Bills team. I think they
- 24:56Speaker 1: are much better this year. I thought they were gonna
- 24:58Speaker 1: because I thought he would have a major Russian and
- 25:00Speaker 1: Josh Allen, but that team has just built so smart
- 25:03Speaker 1: with so many weapons that they're gonna be fine this year.
- 25:06Speaker 1: This is just a bad position for them to be in.
- 25:08Speaker 1: I flip flop every day because, like we just talked about,
- 25:11Speaker 1: if this is three and a half, I would like
- 25:12Speaker 1: the Bills because I think this is that close to
- 25:14Speaker 1: the matchup. But if you're gonna give it me and
- 25:16Speaker 1: under a field goal on this Chiefs team at home homes,
- 25:19Speaker 1: I take that every time, just because I believe that
- 25:20Speaker 1: much of my home. So I get what they're thinking.
- 25:23Speaker 1: They're stucky, but I don't have the cojones to make
- 25:26Speaker 1: this kind of bet Like this is one of my
- 25:28Speaker 1: smaller bets of the week, bet in the Chiefs because
- 25:30Speaker 1: there just isn't that much value in my opinion on
- 25:32Speaker 1: this game, I think your cahones are plenty. Big Buddy, Well,
- 25:36Speaker 1: he's the only person I knew that would would took
- 25:38Speaker 1: the Patriots money line last week. So Stucky's a legend
- 25:41Speaker 1: his own right. The Survivor pool pick of the week.
- 25:51Speaker 1: Let's talk about a survivor Oh fucking hate it. Like
- 25:57Speaker 1: there's a couple of teams we could choose, but when
- 25:59Speaker 1: else where we use the Vike teams, this is the
- 26:00Speaker 1: only time they get a home game against Detroit, the
- 26:03Speaker 1: worst team in their division. I hate it. Chat By
- 26:06Speaker 1: the way, this is the team everybody's gonna choose, so
- 26:09Speaker 1: everyone is. That's why I hated so much. And like
- 26:12Speaker 1: we lost last year on the Vikings in this exact spot,
- 26:14Speaker 1: playing the third string quarterback and the Cowboys, and they
- 26:17Speaker 1: lost at home, but we have to. It's the fact
- 26:21Speaker 1: that they lost so bad last week against the Cleveland
- 26:24Speaker 1: only against seven points at home the only reason I
- 26:27Speaker 1: feel that much better about taking this number. So I'm
- 26:30Speaker 1: I'm gonna be trying to middleman here because I'm taking
- 26:32Speaker 1: Detroit's number, but I will be playing the Vikings and
- 26:35Speaker 1: our survivor contest because that's just we have to do.
- 26:38Speaker 1: We have to get rid of the Vikings. We'll teet
- 26:40Speaker 1: it out Sunday morning, but I would say it's a
- 26:42Speaker 1: ninety percent chance that we end up with the Vikings
- 26:44Speaker 1: as a survivor pick. And now a word from our
- 26:51Speaker 1: friends at Vandel. The NFL is back, and Fandel's Sports
- 26:54Speaker 1: Book wants you to get the most out of every play.
- 26:57Speaker 1: That's why they're giving everyone at ten dollar or risk

- 27:13Speaker 1: considering the Bengals money line, the under and Jamaar chase

- 28:37Speaker 1: get back to the show. Money line, Ron Robin, Who's
- 28:40Speaker 1: in there all right? Buddy? Texans Dolphins Bengals. Yep, I
- 28:46Speaker 1: got no is you putting the Bengals in there. We're
- 28:48Speaker 1: just looking for literally just a shock the world and
- 28:51Speaker 1: things that don't make sense but will after the fact,
- 28:55Speaker 1: like the Jets and the Giants last week exactly that
- 28:58Speaker 1: did not make sense to beat at the time, but
- 29:00Speaker 1: afterwards people going, you know what, actually, now looking at
- 29:02Speaker 1: it kind of makes sense. Forty niners. We got a
- 29:04Speaker 1: Cardinals team hyped up to the you know, the highest
- 29:07Speaker 1: of highs. Cardinals, Ei're gonna blow this team out in
- 29:10Speaker 1: the forty nine or fours, are gonna win this game,
- 29:12Speaker 1: So let me fade the hype train. Love love love
- 29:16Speaker 1: divisional matchups like this. We got a rookie quarterback plane
- 29:19Speaker 1: in trade Lands, so the Cardinals, I really aren't gonna
- 29:21Speaker 1: to defend this guy, prepare for him. Give it to me.
- 29:23Speaker 1: That's a big number plus one ninety on the money
- 29:25Speaker 1: line right now, so that could be our fourth leg
- 29:28Speaker 1: and then I'm sorry to do it. I'm sorry to
- 29:30Speaker 1: do it to people, but we have to do it
- 29:32Speaker 1: because it's it's a home dog value. Give me the
- 29:34Speaker 1: Jacksonville Jaguars money line. They haven't one. I think they're
- 29:38Speaker 1: going on nineteen or twenty weeks, I will keep losing
- 29:41Speaker 1: money bending their home money line. But this is this
- 29:44Speaker 1: is what I have to do. Tennessee, I believe have
- 29:46Speaker 1: twenty one players on the injury list right now. There's
- 29:49Speaker 1: only twenty two starters on the team twenty one injuries,
- 29:52Speaker 1: so a lot of this round robin is fading teams
- 29:55Speaker 1: with injuries right now. So Tennessee Titians is really a
- 29:58Speaker 1: heavily injury team or fading them. Patriots injured team were
- 30:01Speaker 1: fading them, and the Buccaneers are very heavily injured team,
- 30:03Speaker 1: were fading them. So we're just trying to find value
- 30:05Speaker 1: in the teams playing a lot of these backups that
- 30:07Speaker 1: key positions. So I get it a lot of drama
- 30:10Speaker 1: in Jacksonville, but this is one of these games where
- 30:13Speaker 1: the team could come together if they like Urban a win,
- 30:15Speaker 1: and if they keeps staying this low at four, it
- 30:18Speaker 1: kind of feels like Vegas Town is something here. So
- 30:20Speaker 1: I got new issue throwing this end our fifth fifth
- 30:23Speaker 1: play in our round robin. Big balls better the week
- 30:26Speaker 1: Bengals plus three from earlier this week on Tuesday, the
- 30:29Speaker 1: Sun says bet was the Giants plus seven. Our fox
- 30:32Speaker 1: sold bet was Miami plus ten against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
- 30:36Speaker 1: The five that we're thinking about right now, but again
- 30:38Speaker 1: we will update on Sunday. Look in the Action Network
- 30:40Speaker 1: cap Dolphins, Texans, Bengals, Giants, Chargers. The money line round
- 30:45Speaker 1: Robin Parlay will include Dolphins, Jags, Texans, Bengals, Niners. Wow,
- 30:52Speaker 1: we ask so much of people to do really gross,
- 30:55Speaker 1: disgusting things, but look, it pays off. Right Week one,
- 30:59Speaker 1: we had a couple of money line round Robin Parlay's. Yeah,
- 31:03Speaker 1: last week. Last week we had the Jets and the
- 31:05Speaker 1: Giants in a money line. Probably had Seattle in there too,
- 31:08Speaker 1: Like sometimes it works, Yeah, it hits ugly dogs win.
- 31:11Speaker 1: So it's looking crazy right now, but it just feels
- 31:14Speaker 1: like we're up for another wonky week where there's just
- 31:17Speaker 1: a lot of big, big dogs that shouldn't be these
- 31:19Speaker 1: bigger dogs. All right, listen, stick around because Seth Wickersham
- 31:22Speaker 1: Simon and I have a great conversation about his book
- 31:25Speaker 1: is Better to Be Feared? Enjoy all Right, I've been
- 31:30Speaker 1: talking about this book, It's Better to Be Feared for months.
- 31:34Speaker 1: We've mentioned on the podcast several times. We talked about
- 31:36Speaker 1: it on Tuesday, Finally, we have the author, Seth Wickersham,
- 31:41Speaker 1: long time senior writer at ESPN. You've seen him all
- 31:44Speaker 1: over the airwaves promoting It's Better to Be Feared, his
- 31:49Speaker 1: genius opus on the New England Patriots Dynasty. Uh. He's
- 31:55Speaker 1: a very close friend, one of my closest friends. I'll
- 31:58Speaker 1: say that off the top, um STI, without a doubt,
- 32:06Speaker 1: one of the best sports books ever written. You can't
- 32:08Speaker 1: even you can't even deny it, like you got so
- 32:11Speaker 1: inside one of the most difficult subjects to get inside,
- 32:13Speaker 1: which is a mysterious secretive team in a mysterious secretive
- 32:17Speaker 1: league that is run by mysterious secretive people who don't
- 32:21Speaker 1: want anyone snooping around their business. And you fucking nailed it.
- 32:25Speaker 1: So nice job. The past ten days, it's been the
- 32:29Speaker 1: only thing people in the sports world they're talking about. Um.
- 32:33Speaker 1: And I'll say this, I feel like with all the
- 32:37Speaker 1: news that's going on with the book and everyone's been
- 32:39Speaker 1: talking about it, especially in the lead up to the
- 32:41Speaker 1: Patriots Bocks game, about the Brady Belichick relationship and uh,
- 32:46Speaker 1: sort of those moments that are very inside about their
- 32:49Speaker 1: breakup or how they felt about each other. It's kind
- 32:52Speaker 1: of missing the point because to me, like this is
- 32:54Speaker 1: as intimate a portrait of three people in Belichick, Brady
- 32:58Speaker 1: and Craft that have been keeping their lives very, very
- 33:01Speaker 1: secret for a very long time. I feel like people
- 33:04Speaker 1: are talking about that enough. Do you feel the same way.
- 33:07Speaker 1: Do you feel like there's intimacy here that is being
- 33:10Speaker 1: overlooked and because of the sort of sensational aspects of
- 33:13Speaker 1: the reporting. I think it's thanks man. First of all,
- 33:17Speaker 1: I think it's both. I think that look number one,
- 33:20Speaker 1: when you have you know, dialogue in there that includes
- 33:24Speaker 1: swear words, you know, from those people maybe sometimes even
- 33:28Speaker 1: about each other in moments in moments of you know,
- 33:31Speaker 1: exhaustion and and and out of patience. Um, you know,
- 33:35Speaker 1: I think that that stuff. Obviously people gravitated, gravitate too,
- 33:38Speaker 1: but I think it actually speaks to the themes you
- 33:41Speaker 1: were talking about. And let's pick one of them for instance. Um,
- 33:46Speaker 1: a quote they got a lot of attention was from
- 33:48Speaker 1: Robert Craft. It was in the fall of he was
- 33:51Speaker 1: at a business conference, one of these kind of rich
- 33:53Speaker 1: guys business conferences and Aspen and he's in the hotel
- 33:56Speaker 1: lobby and you know, he says paraphrasing here says know,
- 34:00Speaker 1: you come here and you meet the most brilliant minds.
- 34:02Speaker 1: I really hate to leave this place because you know,
- 34:04Speaker 1: I have to go to Detroit and be with the
- 34:06Speaker 1: biggest effing a hole in my life, my head coach.
- 34:10Speaker 1: And you know, that got a lot of attention. But
- 34:13Speaker 1: when you look at it within the context of Robert Kraft,
- 34:17Speaker 1: who for the most part, masterfully kept the band together
- 34:22Speaker 1: for twenty years despite all of the polls of ego
- 34:25Speaker 1: and fame and entitlement that might come with winning as
- 34:29Speaker 1: much as they did, you know, it's probably the thing
- 34:32Speaker 1: that's going to get him into the Hall of Fame.
- 34:33Speaker 1: And that doesn't mean that it didn't come without managerial
- 34:36Speaker 1: challenges at times. And I think that was one of
- 34:39Speaker 1: those times where he was just feeling a little tired
- 34:41Speaker 1: about it all. I have so many favorite parts of
- 34:44Speaker 1: the book. I want to hear from you. What was
- 34:47Speaker 1: your favorite part of the book to report? My favorite
- 34:51Speaker 1: part of the book generally is so it's divided into
- 34:53Speaker 1: three parts. Part one is kind of the joy of
- 34:56Speaker 1: the rise. It's the first three Super Bowls and you know,
- 35:00Speaker 1: kind of plateau ing in that two thousand sixth season,
- 35:04Speaker 1: you know, ending around there where um, you know the
- 35:08Speaker 1: Patriots a lot of ways, we're just we're a version
- 35:10Speaker 1: of America's team. I mean, there really wasn't the the
- 35:13Speaker 1: hatred that you sort of see right now for that team.
- 35:17Speaker 1: So that's part one. Part two is the ten year
- 35:20Speaker 1: gap that they didn't win a Super Bowl, and Part
- 35:23Speaker 1: three is the reclamation of the dynasty and how it
- 35:27Speaker 1: kind of ended up dissipating in My favorite part of
- 35:31Speaker 1: the book, generally speaking as part two, because and that
- 35:34Speaker 1: goes from two thousand seven to midway through the third
- 35:36Speaker 1: quarter of January of two thousand fifteen, because you had
- 35:40Speaker 1: Tom Brady and Bill Belichick who had already established Hall
- 35:43Speaker 1: of Fame careers at that point, but they weren't quite
- 35:46Speaker 1: able to accomplish their goal. They had plateaued at the
- 35:50Speaker 1: highest possible level you can without plateauing as super Bowl champions.
- 35:55Speaker 1: And how they decided and the ways that they chose
- 35:58Speaker 1: to try to get better and to dig a little
- 36:00Speaker 1: bit deeper and to be a little bit more imaginative
- 36:04Speaker 1: and creative and think outside the box about how they
- 36:06Speaker 1: could get back to that status that they had attained.
- 36:09Speaker 1: To me, is the most interesting part of things because
- 36:11Speaker 1: you just don't see that that often in professional sports.
- 36:13Speaker 1: I think that that drive that they showed during that
- 36:16Speaker 1: time and the fact that it ended up working is
- 36:19Speaker 1: about as rare as their six championships together. What specifically
- 36:24Speaker 1: did they do in that time that helped them transform? Well?
- 36:29Speaker 1: With Tom Brady, it's it's now a business, but it's
- 36:32Speaker 1: essentially when he founded his program, his TV twelve method. UM.
- 36:37Speaker 1: I write about in the book being in his apartment
- 36:40Speaker 1: and we were sitting in his living room, living room
- 36:42Speaker 1: talking in March of and um, this guy walks into
- 36:47Speaker 1: the living room. He had this elevator that just opened
- 36:50Speaker 1: right into his house, his apartment in in in downtown Boston,
- 36:54Speaker 1: and this guy just enters the living room behind me
- 36:57Speaker 1: and I look around and um, Brady's Alejandro. And they
- 37:03Speaker 1: get up and they hug and they make small talk.
- 37:05Speaker 1: And you know, I had seen Alex Guerrero around Tom
- 37:08Speaker 1: Brady a little bit, but I never talked to him
- 37:09Speaker 1: about it. So I was like, well, what's his role?
- 37:12Speaker 1: And I remember, and I wrote about it. Brady was like,
- 37:15Speaker 1: you know, it's it's really hard to describe what he does,
- 37:18Speaker 1: and in fact, it wasn't. Um. You know, Brady at
- 37:23Speaker 1: that time was making clear that he wanted to play
- 37:24Speaker 1: into his forties, and Alex Guerrero's job, more than anything
- 37:27Speaker 1: was to make it happen. He was the one who
- 37:30Speaker 1: to never say no to Tom Brady, to never say
- 37:32Speaker 1: you can't do this, And so they obviously developed their
- 37:35Speaker 1: own methodology that by the way, it was also at
- 37:37Speaker 1: odds with the Patriot way, the Belichick way, and then
- 37:41Speaker 1: with Belichick, I think that one of my one of
- 37:45Speaker 1: my favorite moments that I kind of got into was
- 37:48Speaker 1: midway through the third quarter of divisional round. They're hosting
- 37:51Speaker 1: the Baltimore Ravens. They're down by fourteen points against the
- 37:55Speaker 1: team that's just not afraid of them, and it looks
- 37:58Speaker 1: like they're gonna lose, and you know it's gonna get
- 38:01Speaker 1: them bounced once again in the first round of the playoffs.
- 38:04Speaker 1: Jimmy Garoppolo had just finished his rookie year. You wonder if, like,
- 38:07Speaker 1: if they had been bounced again, you know, what would
- 38:09Speaker 1: that of dynamic look like with Tom Brady had been back.
- 38:12Speaker 1: Who knows and Belichick dust off the play the funky
- 38:17Speaker 1: formations and the play called Baltimore and Ravens. There's two
- 38:19Speaker 1: different versions of it, and um he the The original
- 38:25Speaker 1: name of that play was called fight Song, and it
- 38:26Speaker 1: was originated by Lane Kiffin, and he called it fight
- 38:29Speaker 1: Song because he said, when we run it, we're going
- 38:30Speaker 1: to score. And they lifted it. Nick's uh. Lane Kiffin
- 38:35Speaker 1: brought it with him to Alabama. Alabama ran it, the
- 38:39Speaker 1: Patriots lifted it and kind of changed it a little bit.
- 38:42Speaker 1: So they deployed this these two plays midway through the
- 38:45Speaker 1: third quarter, and it not only worked in the sense
- 38:48Speaker 1: that it got them back in the game re energized
- 38:51Speaker 1: the crowd. But one of the themes that I write
- 38:53Speaker 1: about in the book is how Belichick gets inside the
- 38:56Speaker 1: heads of the best coaches in the league and often
- 38:58Speaker 1: finds ways to use their traits and personalities and confidence
- 39:03Speaker 1: against them. He knew that John Harbaugh, great coach of
- 39:06Speaker 1: the Ravens, but someone who's kind of known for having
- 39:08Speaker 1: a quick fuse, would lose his s h I T
- 39:13Speaker 1: over this play, especially when they ran a no huddle,
- 39:16Speaker 1: because the Ravens wouldn't have a ton of time to adjust.
- 39:20Speaker 1: And sure enough, John Harbaugh had a meltdown and got
- 39:22Speaker 1: into sports and my conduct penalty in the third quarter
- 39:24Speaker 1: of that game. So when a matter of minutes Belichick
- 39:27Speaker 1: had had closed. Belichick and Brady really and Josh McDaniels
- 39:32Speaker 1: had closed. The fourteen point score re energized the crowd,
- 39:35Speaker 1: sent the opposing head coach into a tailspin, and they
- 39:38Speaker 1: end up winning that game, which kind of ends up
- 39:40Speaker 1: reigniting the dynasty. John Harboh is a living about this one.
- 39:45Speaker 1: They would now Sales were player, then Tom would take
- 39:47Speaker 1: him to the line right way and snapped the ball
- 39:48Speaker 1: before we had a chance to even figure out who
- 39:50Speaker 1: was lined up where. And that was a deception part
- 39:52Speaker 1: of it, and was clearly deception. I don't know it's
- 39:54Speaker 1: deceiving about that. Hey, those guys got to study the
- 39:57Speaker 1: rule book and you know, figure it out. We obviously
- 40:01Speaker 1: knew what we were doing. Okay. So there's two things
- 40:03Speaker 1: in there. One you talk about Brady and the chapter
- 40:07Speaker 1: about Guerrero in two thousand thirteen. To me, Brady for
- 40:14Speaker 1: many many years comes across in this book as so
- 40:18Speaker 1: self aware. And there's a couple of scenes very early.
- 40:22Speaker 1: It's when he is willing to meet with the sports
- 40:27Speaker 1: psychologists at Michigan. It's when he's living with his buddies
- 40:31Speaker 1: as a backup quarterback in a condo near Foxborough. It's
- 40:35Speaker 1: when he signs that new deal and is playing air
- 40:40Speaker 1: guitar with Nugent, the offensive lineman, and like recognizing he's
- 40:46Speaker 1: a multi millionaire and screaming it out loud. It's so
- 40:50Speaker 1: like joyful and innocent. And you talk about that and
- 40:52Speaker 1: like telling his parents after the Super Bowl, everything's going
- 40:55Speaker 1: to change. I'm going to change, You're going to change.
- 41:01Speaker 1: And in two thirteen to me feels like when he
- 41:03Speaker 1: completely loses that self awareness. What happened. I think his
- 41:09Speaker 1: fame exploded to a level that and has continued to
- 41:12Speaker 1: explode to a level that warps the mind so much
- 41:16Speaker 1: that you know, he's almost become a version of that
- 41:20Speaker 1: global elite for whom human longevity is human destiny. Um.
- 41:26Speaker 1: You know, I think that when you reach a certain
- 41:27Speaker 1: level of fame. I'm not saying that he's disconnected from
- 41:32Speaker 1: who he used to be, but you're kind of disconnected
- 41:35Speaker 1: from the realities of a lot of a lot of people,
- 41:39Speaker 1: no matter how hard you try to retain that. And yeah,
- 41:42Speaker 1: you know, it's one of the kind of character arcs
- 41:43Speaker 1: that I tried to show with him. Um. And and
- 41:47Speaker 1: you know, he talks a lot about his mental toughness
- 41:49Speaker 1: and how he acquired this mental toughness. He's very proud
- 41:52Speaker 1: of that, and so I wanted to try to figure out,
- 41:54Speaker 1: like how he did this. When you're trying to talk
- 41:56Speaker 1: about Tom Brady's greatness, you're asking like, well, how did
- 41:58Speaker 1: he get mentally tough? And it goes back to one
- 42:03Speaker 1: night he had in Michigan. He was buried on the
- 42:05Speaker 1: depth chart and he tells Lloyd Carr that he's going
- 42:08Speaker 1: to transfer to Cal where he can, you know, basically
- 42:10Speaker 1: play almost a right away as soon as he's eligible.
- 42:14Speaker 1: And that night he meets with Greg Harden, his sports psychologist,
- 42:17Speaker 1: and he says, yeah, I'm gonna go to Cal. I'm
- 42:18Speaker 1: not seeing the field here. I mean I ever play.
- 42:21Speaker 1: And you think about all the ways that a sports
- 42:24Speaker 1: psychologist could react. He could um give him a hug,
- 42:29Speaker 1: he could reply with tough love. And Brady at the
- 42:32Speaker 1: time was a self described winer. And Greg Harden starts
- 42:37Speaker 1: laughing at him in the office and he starts laughing
- 42:41Speaker 1: and he says, if you leave, no one's gonna care anyway,
- 42:44Speaker 1: because you haven't done anything here. You want to leave,
- 42:47Speaker 1: go ahead, And that really kind of reignited Brady's competitive
- 42:52Speaker 1: spirit and his his dad later told me, once he
- 42:56Speaker 1: decided to stay at Michigan, he had to kind of
- 42:58Speaker 1: own that decision and lose some of those, you know,
- 43:03Speaker 1: traits that he came in and and become more mature.
- 43:06Speaker 1: And I love that you just talked on that where
- 43:08Speaker 1: that's one of my favorite things about Brady. He might
- 43:11Speaker 1: have been disconnected at that point chat from what he
- 43:13Speaker 1: used to be, but that competitive edge, that killer instinct,
- 43:16Speaker 1: like the thing that we talked about. You just he's
- 43:19Speaker 1: not the month athletic. He's not the smartest quarterback ever
- 43:22Speaker 1: to play. He outworked everyone that's ever played the game.
- 43:25Speaker 1: I mean, we still hear stories about this guy. Again,
- 43:29Speaker 1: he's forty forty four at this point or forty five,
- 43:32Speaker 1: and he's still in the off season reaching out to
- 43:35Speaker 1: receivers throwing patterns. My biggest takeaway from your book this
- 43:39Speaker 1: seems like a man that is not just so obsessive,
- 43:44Speaker 1: but just a man that literally his life. Again, he
- 43:46Speaker 1: has a wife, he has kids, he loves them, he
- 43:48Speaker 1: spends time with them. It's football. Like this man. Literally
- 43:52Speaker 1: he's watching film at the dinner table in his twenty
- 43:55Speaker 1: first season. Like this guy, I feel like we're never
- 43:57Speaker 1: gonna see another player like him, where like he put
- 44:00Speaker 1: his whole life into it. Again, we talked about his
- 44:02Speaker 1: regiment with Alex Carrera, the man won't eat the wrong
- 44:06Speaker 1: calorie in the last ten years because he is just
- 44:09Speaker 1: down to the wire about everything he does. Has there
- 44:11Speaker 1: ever been a player that you've studied and been around
- 44:14Speaker 1: that has these kind of qualities? Are he truly one
- 44:16Speaker 1: of the kind? Oh? It's both. I mean, I think
- 44:18Speaker 1: that's one of the most interesting things about Brady is
- 44:20Speaker 1: for as like global and worldly as he is, he's
- 44:24Speaker 1: not exactly the most well rounded person. He he has
- 44:27Speaker 1: no hobbies and as he said, he has this little
- 44:30Speaker 1: sickness inside him that makes him want to throw a spiral.
- 44:33Speaker 1: And I remember, um, when Chad and I worked together
- 44:36Speaker 1: at ESPN in two thousand and thirteen, I believe um,
- 44:40Speaker 1: we published you know, one of the greatest stories of
- 44:42Speaker 1: all time by Right Thompson on Michael Jordan's and it
- 44:45Speaker 1: was in time for his fiftieth birthday, and the entire
- 44:47Speaker 1: story it was a fascinating read, just because it was
- 44:51Speaker 1: such a raw look at what it's like to be
- 44:54Speaker 1: around Jordan on a day to day basis when this
- 44:57Speaker 1: thing that you have, this this intense competiti stiveness that's
- 45:00Speaker 1: both kind of enriched and subtracted from your lives, refuses
- 45:03Speaker 1: to go out. But he also had a line in
- 45:06Speaker 1: there where Jordan's said, you know, I would give everything
- 45:09Speaker 1: away to go back and be able to play the
- 45:10Speaker 1: game of basketball. I think that when Brady's fifty years old,
- 45:15Speaker 1: assuming he's retired by then, whether he admits it or not,
- 45:18Speaker 1: I think that he'll probably have those thoughts you mentioned, Simon.
- 45:23Speaker 1: I'm glad you bring that up because you mentioned Giselle
- 45:26Speaker 1: and having a family. She's one of my favorite characters
- 45:29Speaker 1: in the book because she is so fiery and passionate
- 45:35Speaker 1: and protective and it's not sort of the stuff that
- 45:39Speaker 1: is well reported about when she goes off on Wes
- 45:42Speaker 1: Welker in the Super Bowl against that second Super Bowl
- 45:46Speaker 1: against the Giants and he should have caught that pass
- 45:47Speaker 1: or whatever it's when she meets the Michigan sports psychologists,
- 45:54Speaker 1: like the warmth that she has for him explains sort
- 45:58Speaker 1: of that scene, because it's really to me that that
- 46:01Speaker 1: defines the book, Like that's the intimacy that is at
- 46:03Speaker 1: the core of this book, is how she reacts to
- 46:05Speaker 1: this person who was so important to her husband. Yeah,
- 46:09Speaker 1: Brady and his wife were in ann Arbor and there
- 46:12Speaker 1: was an anniversary event for the Michigan National Championship team,
- 46:17Speaker 1: of which Brady of course was a backup on, and
- 46:22Speaker 1: they were at a steakhouse, and um, it was interesting
- 46:26Speaker 1: because obviously Brady is a backup on that team Charles
- 46:29Speaker 1: Woodson and Brian Greasy where the where the superstars? And
- 46:33Speaker 1: and even in two thousand seven, at this dinner, Brady's
- 46:36Speaker 1: fame and success is many magnitudes greater than anybody else
- 46:40Speaker 1: who was on that team. And he's sitting at a
- 46:43Speaker 1: table with Giselle and Greg Harden comes over and they
- 46:48Speaker 1: make eye contact and she goes, oh, I know who
- 46:51Speaker 1: you are because he had told her about him. And frankly,
- 46:55Speaker 1: you know Tom still talks to Greg Harden, and Greg
- 46:58Speaker 1: Harden still does you know what he does? Um. In
- 47:02Speaker 1: two thirteen, for instance, you know, Brady had won one
- 47:06Speaker 1: Super Bowl and his entire life had changed, and it
- 47:09Speaker 1: you know, fame had come to him the way that
- 47:10Speaker 1: it always does at warp speed, with no time to
- 47:13Speaker 1: adjust or think about it or strategize. You're just kind
- 47:16Speaker 1: of a kite in the wind, and he was struggling
- 47:18Speaker 1: to adjust to it, and you know, he was giving
- 47:20Speaker 1: into some of those whiney impulses that of course Chad
- 47:23Speaker 1: when he managed me saw me sometimes um. And he's
- 47:27Speaker 1: complaining to Greg Harden about all these things he can't do.
- 47:29Speaker 1: He can't go to the cast station, he can't do this.
- 47:32Speaker 1: People are following him home, or he thinks people are
- 47:34Speaker 1: following him home, so he has to drive long ways anyway.
- 47:37Speaker 1: And Greg Harden again starts laughing at him, and he says,
- 47:41Speaker 1: you know, you want to be the best in the
- 47:43Speaker 1: world of what you do, but you want you don't
- 47:45Speaker 1: want all this stuff that comes with it. And he
- 47:48Speaker 1: was like, right now, you can pick up a phone
- 47:51Speaker 1: and change a kid's life in five minutes. You're the
- 47:53Speaker 1: hot cookie right now, and you're not going to be
- 47:55Speaker 1: the hot cookie forever, so you should take advantage of
- 47:57Speaker 1: this wall you've got it. Of course, it turns out
- 48:00Speaker 1: Brady has been like the hottest cookie ever and he's
- 48:02Speaker 1: still the hot cookie twenty years later, and he'll never
- 48:05Speaker 1: stop being a hot cookie cookie you mentioned earlier, sort
- 48:09Speaker 1: of the Robert Kraft moment where he, you know, says,
- 48:13Speaker 1: I gotta go deal with this fucking asshole. And part
- 48:15Speaker 1: of the reason it feels sensation was because he's swearing. Right.
- 48:20Speaker 1: There is a chapter of this book that is just
- 48:22Speaker 1: called That's a lot of fun. Use. I think the
- 48:24Speaker 1: secondary through line of this book is, and that you've
- 48:28Speaker 1: done this incredibly well for the past six seven years,
- 48:31Speaker 1: is reporting on the power dynamic of the NFL. Like
- 48:35Speaker 1: You've turned NFL ownership, NFL management, NFL senior levels at
- 48:40Speaker 1: the at the league level into a beat and I've
- 48:43Speaker 1: gotten all this behind the scenes stuff and some of
- 48:46Speaker 1: these things are to me as fascinating and interesting and
- 48:50Speaker 1: then pulled back the curtain on the league as anything
- 48:53Speaker 1: about the Brady Craft Belichick dynamic. When you're reporting that stuff,
- 49:00Speaker 1: how much fun is it to get it and know
- 49:03Speaker 1: that you have it. It's a ton of fun. The
- 49:05Speaker 1: NFL is the game that fans in America care about
- 49:08Speaker 1: the most and they know about the least, and so
- 49:11Speaker 1: anytime you can sort of show how these meetings go,
- 49:15Speaker 1: it's awesome. I mean, I've been doing it for years,
- 49:18Speaker 1: especially with my co author Don Vanada. Um. You know,
- 49:21Speaker 1: we did it a lot during the anthem protests in
- 49:24Speaker 1: seventeen with the print with President Trump, and you know,
- 49:26Speaker 1: that stuff is just cool and I really enjoyed. And
- 49:29Speaker 1: there's actually a really interesting Craft moment that that chapter
- 49:32Speaker 1: you alluded to was during the collective bargaining agreement negotiations
- 49:36Speaker 1: where there was the lockout and Myra Kraft was on
- 49:39Speaker 1: her deathbed and Robert Craft was leaving Myra to go
- 49:42Speaker 1: try to negotiate, and she died, and some of the
- 49:45Speaker 1: owners at her funeral. We're coming up to the union chief,
- 49:49Speaker 1: to Morris Smith and trying to negotiate the deal with
- 49:52Speaker 1: him at a funeral, and then later they're all in
- 49:55Speaker 1: a room together. The negotiations are down to offseason workout time.
- 49:59Speaker 1: As we all know, that's been reduced with almost all
- 50:01Speaker 1: of these collective part agreements, and so the union wanted
- 50:04Speaker 1: to reduce it drastically the offseason practice workload. And John Mara,
- 50:08Speaker 1: the owner of the Giants, protest this and he's like, well,
- 50:12Speaker 1: that the coaches and the gm are gonna be piste
- 50:14Speaker 1: off about this, and Kraft kind of looks at him
- 50:16Speaker 1: and he's just like, I'm paraphrasing here. I don't care
- 50:19Speaker 1: if they're upset. We're not gonna kill a deal this Well,
- 50:22Speaker 1: because some head coaches and gms are upset about offseason practices,
- 50:25Speaker 1: and it was kind of a watershed moment because the
- 50:27Speaker 1: players realized that Robert Kraft was truly trying to broke
- 50:30Speaker 1: her a deal and took their side on a key issue.
- 50:34Speaker 1: It's amazing. The whole book is amazing. I wanted to
- 50:37Speaker 1: do really well, Steph. I would love to get your
- 50:40Speaker 1: view on the most recent game. Me and Chad talk
- 50:42Speaker 1: yesterday about the Patriots Buccaneers game. There's fifty seven seconds uft.
- 50:46Speaker 1: I believe the Tampa bay a two time outs, it's
- 50:48Speaker 1: fourth and three, He's about to kick a fifty six
- 50:51Speaker 1: yard field goal. Do you believe Belichick fell on his sword?
- 50:54Speaker 1: That normal Belichick situations, he goes for that. But because
- 50:57Speaker 1: of the respect for Brady and I kind of like
- 51:00Speaker 1: he was setting Brighty up for that moment. He was
- 51:02Speaker 1: really gonna give Brady fifty three seconds in that stadium
- 51:06Speaker 1: with two time out to go down the field and
- 51:08Speaker 1: kick a field goal. I would love to hear because
- 51:10Speaker 1: you're so close to it. I would love to see
- 51:11Speaker 1: what your view is of was. But what was Belichick's
- 51:14Speaker 1: thought process and that final you know, fourth and three moment.
- 51:17Speaker 1: What was he really thinking there? Oh, I think he
- 51:20Speaker 1: wanted to win the game, and I mean he came
- 51:21Speaker 1: six inches from winning it. That's obviously debated decision at
- 51:24Speaker 1: the time, I guess I didn't really think about it
- 51:26Speaker 1: because I mean the field goal went off the upright,
- 51:30Speaker 1: it was so close to me, like how close it
- 51:32Speaker 1: was kind of validated his decision. It was literally a tsunami.
- 51:36Speaker 1: That's why. That's why I thought it was such a
- 51:37Speaker 1: bizarre move by him, because yeah, if it's a nice
- 51:39Speaker 1: sunny day kick fifty six yard or it was literally
- 51:42Speaker 1: sideways ring that was That's what was so crazy to me.
- 51:46Speaker 1: I love the game. I mean, I thought it was
- 51:47Speaker 1: just fascinating to watch those two minds battle against each
- 51:51Speaker 1: other on a public stage. It was I mean, Belichick,
- 51:54Speaker 1: it reminded me a lot of like the old school
- 51:56Speaker 1: like two thousand one Patriots, right where you have a
- 51:58Speaker 1: pretty good defense, the let's teams move the ball, but
- 52:02Speaker 1: you know, gets tough in the red zone and forces
- 52:04Speaker 1: a lot of these quarterbacks to settle in a lot
- 52:06Speaker 1: of these great teams and offenses to settle for field goals,
- 52:09Speaker 1: and then on offense, you just kind of have a
- 52:11Speaker 1: ball control offense, right, and you're trying to like figure
- 52:14Speaker 1: out the geometry of that and throw a screen pass
- 52:17Speaker 1: or a short pass every which way you possibly can.
- 52:20Speaker 1: None with the fact that, like mac Jones came out
- 52:22Speaker 1: of hit nineteen straight passes at one point, you know,
- 52:25Speaker 1: driving rain like that against the defending Super Bowl champions.
- 52:29Speaker 1: And it really took all of Tom Brady two, all
- 52:33Speaker 1: of his ingenuity to to beat Bill. I mean, they
- 52:35Speaker 1: had him a couple of times. And now the first
- 52:38Speaker 1: down run, that first out like a little kid that
- 52:41Speaker 1: was that really summed up that game to me. It
- 52:43Speaker 1: was like, that's how you know how much it meant
- 52:45Speaker 1: that both of them. Yeah, his legs ended up kind
- 52:47Speaker 1: of winning the game for them. I think the Tampa
- 52:49Speaker 1: offensive line played great, but weirdly enough, Brady's forty four
- 52:52Speaker 1: year old legs, in his ability to kind of extend
- 52:55Speaker 1: plays ended up I think, you know, kind of being
- 52:57Speaker 1: the difference. And so I loved it. I loved every
- 53:00Speaker 1: it of it. I have one more question before we
- 53:01Speaker 1: let you go at one more question. Belichick is so
- 53:04Speaker 1: different in this book to me than he is in
- 53:06Speaker 1: real life. Right, He's so you know, ogre ish and
- 53:10Speaker 1: not wanting to communicate and all that kind of stuff.
- 53:12Speaker 1: You've got great detail about what it's like to communicate
- 53:16Speaker 1: with him one on one, and how he likes to
- 53:18Speaker 1: communicate with reporters or what when he is at his
- 53:21Speaker 1: most unguarded. Reveal some of that right now, and how
- 53:25Speaker 1: he communicated directly with you. Yeah, one of the times
- 53:28Speaker 1: that I one of the things I loved in the
- 53:30Speaker 1: book was just trying to learn about what it's like
- 53:32Speaker 1: to work for him, right and you know, these days
- 53:34Speaker 1: that started four thirty in the morning and go until
- 53:36Speaker 1: eleven at night in these meetings where he drives the
- 53:39Speaker 1: coach is crazy because you know he's he's asking about
- 53:43Speaker 1: decisions over and over and over again, and you know
- 53:46Speaker 1: they're kind of running out of patients, but you know,
- 53:49Speaker 1: he's just making sure that every that there's not any
- 53:52Speaker 1: screws loose, and you know, the media was part of that.
- 53:55Speaker 1: I thought it was interesting that, you know, I think
- 53:58Speaker 1: there was a moment or him, maybe in the years
- 54:01Speaker 1: after Spygate, where he was really interested in letting people
- 54:04Speaker 1: see the staggering depth of knowledge that he had accumulated
- 54:07Speaker 1: throughout his career. And so with myself and others, you know,
- 54:10Speaker 1: he'd give windows into that, and he would often, you know,
- 54:13Speaker 1: wait until eleven or eleven thirty, until his work day
- 54:15Speaker 1: was done before he would talk to people. Or if
- 54:17Speaker 1: he was in his office, he would kick his feet
- 54:19Speaker 1: up and take his shoes and his socks off. And
- 54:23Speaker 1: the coaches would talk about that in meetings. How Like
- 54:25Speaker 1: sometimes they were in meetings where he was upset about
- 54:28Speaker 1: about games or whatever it happened, and he would kick
- 54:31Speaker 1: his feet up on the desk and have untied his
- 54:33Speaker 1: shoes and have his socks up there, and they're just
- 54:35Speaker 1: going like, oh my god, his feet stink. We're in
- 54:38Speaker 1: this stuffy room, we're going through the game, a game
- 54:42Speaker 1: that we lost, and he is drilling in and critiquing
- 54:45Speaker 1: every bad decision that we made. All the food in
- 54:48Speaker 1: the cafeteria is gone. We still haven't done our work
- 54:51Speaker 1: for the night, and this thing is, you know, it's
- 54:54Speaker 1: it's almost the beginning of it with hours to go
- 54:57Speaker 1: and no end in sight. And you know, so anyway,
- 54:59Speaker 1: I just I enjoyed kind of like trying to show
- 55:01Speaker 1: what it was like to work for him because his
- 55:04Speaker 1: football genius. You know, you can't be polite all the time,
- 55:08Speaker 1: and you can't be a nice guy all the time
- 55:11Speaker 1: to you know, accomplish what he has. I mean, you
- 55:14Speaker 1: have to be hard on people, and you have to
- 55:16Speaker 1: coach them hard and critique them hard, you know, doing
- 55:19Speaker 1: it from a perspective that we're all in it together, because,
- 55:21Speaker 1: as he said many times, nobody makes more mistakes than
- 55:23Speaker 1: he does. Well, listen, it's a great book. That's a
- 55:26Speaker 1: great story. It's revealing how inside the book is to
- 55:32Speaker 1: Brady Belichick, Craft, the Dynasty, the Mystery Capital are reporting,
- 55:39Speaker 1: Seth Wickersham, It's better to be feared. Thanks for joining us, buddy,
