- 0:03Speaker 1: Fourteen year Big leaguer, three time World Series champ, Jeremy
- 0:06Speaker 1: I felt joining us right now back on FT Jeremy,
- 0:08Speaker 1: Good to see you man.
- 0:09Speaker 2: How you been. I'm good, guys, how are you?
- 0:13Speaker 1: Life's good, Life's good. We're going to get into the
- 0:15Speaker 1: book excited to talk about it. I want to get
- 0:17Speaker 1: a couple of minutes from you out of the Giants
- 0:20Speaker 1: since you watch them a lot?
- 0:21Speaker 2: Right now?
- 0:22Speaker 1: What do we got going on there? And I know
- 0:24Speaker 1: there was I will say, there's so much action from
- 0:27Speaker 1: the weekend. I know there was like a whole sub
- 0:29Speaker 1: story going on out there with bullpen usage. So maybe
- 0:32Speaker 1: we start there since that's what you did, well.
- 0:35Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, let's do it. It'd be great.
- 0:37Speaker 1: What do you got for me? What's going on out there?
- 0:39Speaker 1: What's the latest controversy? And do you feel like we're
- 0:43Speaker 1: nitpicking a little bit? And when I say we like
- 0:45Speaker 1: the general public because the team just doesn't playing.
- 0:47Speaker 3: Well, well, it's diffinite because the team isn't playing well.
- 0:51Speaker 3: I mean, but it's an easy it's an easy pounce, right.
- 0:55Speaker 3: You got Vitello coming in first time as a manager,
- 0:59Speaker 3: and they're like, oh, like if they do bad, we
- 1:01Speaker 3: can just crush the manager like he's the problem, like
- 1:04Speaker 3: you know, but if you look at he's not the problem.
- 1:06Speaker 3: It doesn't matter if it's Bochy or Melvin or whatever manager.
- 1:10Speaker 3: He can't go out there and do it all for you.
- 1:12Speaker 3: I would say some of the bullpen moves are on
- 1:15Speaker 3: the manager, So I think there's a learning experience there.
- 1:18Speaker 3: But when you don't have a closer, a bona fide closer.
- 1:21Speaker 3: And I love Buster, he's a good friend of mine,
- 1:24Speaker 3: and I know he's taken a lot of heat for
- 1:25Speaker 3: not having these closers or you know, getting the big closer,
- 1:29Speaker 3: but they obviously have the reasons for it. I think
- 1:31Speaker 3: they thought Walker was going to step up and do it,
- 1:34Speaker 3: and he just didn't, and he got sent down. He's
- 1:37Speaker 3: come back up. He wants his role. The guys that
- 1:39Speaker 3: they wanted. Some guys got hurt. It's a really tough
- 1:42Speaker 3: deal when you're doing bullpen by committee and you're trying
- 1:45Speaker 3: to figure out who what when. How I don't like
- 1:47Speaker 3: bullpen by committee. I think their offense is good enough.
- 1:51Speaker 3: I think they're starting to heat up. I think they
- 1:53Speaker 3: they have some ability to score some runs. I think
- 1:56Speaker 3: that they're back into their bullpen is in flux right now,
- 2:00Speaker 3: and it's going to be a problem.
- 2:02Speaker 2: You have to have.
- 2:03Speaker 3: Guys that you know, when you come into the game
- 2:06Speaker 3: when it's a one, two, three run lead, it is
- 2:09Speaker 3: over like you have to have that and something. Doesn't
- 2:11Speaker 3: mean it's always going to be over, but there's a
- 2:12Speaker 3: good chance that the other side looks at it and says, man,
- 2:16Speaker 3: it's gonna be a heck of a fight here. Hopefully
- 2:18Speaker 3: we can squeeze one out, but there's a good chance
- 2:20Speaker 3: we're gonna cough this one up, come back tomorrow and
- 2:23Speaker 3: and and that's not what they have right now. And
- 2:26Speaker 3: so I feel like that's gonna be the biggest black
- 2:28Speaker 3: eye on them going forward. They're obviously so far behind
- 2:32Speaker 3: now they're probably gonna have to rebuild at some point.
- 2:34Speaker 3: But they have to go into the offseason, in my opinion,
- 2:37Speaker 3: with a with a mentality of I gotta have a
- 2:39Speaker 3: lockdown bullpen.
- 2:41Speaker 4: Jeremy, you won three, You won three World Series and
- 2:44Speaker 4: with the Giants, and they had Brian Wilson at the
- 2:48Speaker 4: back end, they had you, they had Hobby Lopez, they
- 2:50Speaker 4: had a crew of bullpen guys along with the starting pitching.
- 2:54Speaker 4: Buster Posey knows this so why do you think he
- 2:56Speaker 4: went into this season without that? He knows what makes
- 3:00Speaker 4: a team successful. He knows how to win in San Francisco.
- 3:02Speaker 4: When you guys are rolling tight games, Boat, you would
- 3:06Speaker 4: pick the right matchup. He'd always figure out a way
- 3:08Speaker 4: to get the matchup that he wanted to bring in
- 3:10Speaker 4: the lefty versal left to the right evers aliety right.
- 3:13Speaker 4: He'd make the other team pinch it to get him
- 3:14Speaker 4: the matchup. Posey knows this. So why do you think
- 3:17Speaker 4: he went into this season again without having those options?
- 3:21Speaker 4: For Tony Vaitelo.
- 3:23Speaker 3: You know, that's one thing I've I've called him recently
- 3:27Speaker 3: and said, hey, I'd love to pick your brain. I
- 3:29Speaker 3: just want to give you somebody input if you're I'm
- 3:31Speaker 3: sure you're being inundated with a bunch of like why
- 3:33Speaker 3: didn't you use so I don't want to do that,
- 3:35Speaker 3: but it would be it would be smart to get
- 3:37Speaker 3: some perspective. That doesn't necessarily mean they didn't look at
- 3:41Speaker 3: it like that was a mistake. I think that they
- 3:44Speaker 3: in some ways saw a bullpen that had had talent.
- 3:49Speaker 2: They've got a couple of years under their belt. Could
- 3:51Speaker 2: we do it?
- 3:51Speaker 3: I think they maybe were hoping to squeak by. I
- 3:53Speaker 3: think that there was some talent. I mean, Diaz was
- 3:55Speaker 3: out there, but look he's already hurt, right or whatever.
- 3:58Speaker 2: You know, so you never know. You go get the closer.
- 4:01Speaker 2: That doesn't mean it's going to be healthy.
- 4:03Speaker 3: I do feel like I don't know if there was
- 4:05Speaker 3: a there was several options out there, they didn't go
- 4:07Speaker 3: get any of them. I think they felt like maybe
- 4:09Speaker 3: they could do it. Some teams roll the dice on.
- 4:12Speaker 3: That might have backfired, I cause it probably wasn't. I
- 4:17Speaker 3: don't know why. When I went into spring training, that
- 4:21Speaker 3: was probably my biggest red flag. When I was looking
- 4:23Speaker 3: at it, I was like, my biggest red flag. You
- 4:25Speaker 3: got arms, you got velocity, but every you all know,
- 4:30Speaker 3: I mean, aj you know it does. The velocity doesn't matter,
- 4:33Speaker 3: Like I don't care if you throw one hundred and three,
- 4:35Speaker 3: like you know, it's fun to have, But in the end,
- 4:38Speaker 3: it's execution.
- 4:39Speaker 2: And are they executing. They're not.
- 4:41Speaker 3: And I thought that maybe they thought they had some
- 4:43Speaker 3: arms that could do that and execute and they're just not.
- 4:45Speaker 3: And you got a lot of guys going out there
- 4:48Speaker 3: that for me, when I see it, I've told them that.
- 4:51Speaker 2: I told the bullpen. This before I left spring training.
- 4:53Speaker 3: I'm like, be a little weird, don't be normal, get
- 4:56Speaker 3: a little crazy, have a little Brian Wilson. You have
- 4:59Speaker 3: a little romo in you. You know, I was weird
- 5:01Speaker 3: in my own way. I wasn't weird like that, but
- 5:03Speaker 3: I was weird in my own way. And you had
- 5:04Speaker 3: the professor like Hovey, who was just straight cut, and
- 5:07Speaker 3: we had different personalities.
- 5:09Speaker 2: I don't feel like they have any guys coming in.
- 5:11Speaker 3: That's like the other team is like, oh man, we
- 5:14Speaker 3: got free and Wilson coming in the thinks he has
- 5:16Speaker 3: ninjas and his beard, you know, like, you know, like
- 5:19Speaker 3: we don't have any of that. We don't have a team.
- 5:21Speaker 3: There's no one that comes in that anybody's afraid of.
- 5:24Speaker 3: And that's the problem you have to have that we
- 5:27Speaker 3: don't have those personalities. And I don't know why Buster.
- 5:31Speaker 3: I think he probably wants to. He does definitely know.
- 5:34Speaker 3: I just I'm just not sure what happened in those
- 5:36Speaker 3: upper management conversations.
- 5:38Speaker 1: With over thirty five million downloads, Seakeeek is the number
- 5:41Speaker 1: one rated ticketing app and krats there are many many
- 5:45Speaker 1: baseball games on the inventory. To check out all summer long.
- 5:49Speaker 1: This is the season now, it is baseball baseball season.
- 5:53Speaker 1: Not many other options for you sports wise. I know
- 5:55Speaker 1: you can go anywhere you want to go with Seekeek.
- 5:57Speaker 1: There's so many tickets to choose from, but baseball centers
- 6:00Speaker 1: age Now.
- 6:00Speaker 5: For the next couple months, school's out, I'm going to
- 6:04Speaker 5: watch some baseball games, some big league games, all in
- 6:06Speaker 5: my area, and I want to know exactly what it
- 6:08Speaker 5: looks like. And I also want the best deal, So
- 6:11Speaker 5: I'm looking for the Green, not the red.
- 6:13Speaker 2: That's right.
- 6:13Speaker 1: The Green hooks you up with the best deals on
- 6:16Speaker 1: the app. Of course, we have the code it's Territory
- 6:19Speaker 1: ten for ten percent off your next set of tickets
- 6:21Speaker 1: at Sea Geek. That's ten percent off any MLB tickets
- 6:24Speaker 1: with the promo code Territory one zero. Make sure you
- 6:28Speaker 1: click the link in the description of this episode that'll
- 6:31Speaker 1: download the app if you don't have it already, and
- 6:33Speaker 1: you'll have the code automatically added to your account so
- 6:36Speaker 1: that you can use that code later. Thank you, See Geek.
- 6:39Speaker 5: Well, it's not the bullpen, but they did get somebody
- 6:41Speaker 5: that you're like, oh, this guy puts fear into the
- 6:45Speaker 5: other team's pitching. Staff when they got Raffie Devers. Evaluate
- 6:49Speaker 5: what you felt like when they made that acquisition to
- 6:53Speaker 5: where we're at today.
- 6:55Speaker 3: Yeah, man, that was I don't know. That's a guy
- 6:59Speaker 3: that I thought was a good he. I thought he
- 7:01Speaker 3: won out on that trade. But again, now I feel
- 7:05Speaker 3: like Devers went from being that guy that like was
- 7:09Speaker 3: locked in and he was basically putting fear to the
- 7:12Speaker 3: other pitching staff and now he's trying to do too much.
- 7:14Speaker 3: He's taken I mean, his swings on some of these
- 7:17Speaker 3: pitches are so big, they're not short compact. They don't
- 7:21Speaker 3: it does. It seemed he's starting to heat up a
- 7:22Speaker 3: little bit. But I do not think he's that guy
- 7:25Speaker 3: that they thought he was gonna be. And that doesn't
- 7:27Speaker 3: mean he can't be. It just seems like he's trying
- 7:29Speaker 3: to hit through in homers when no one's on. He's
- 7:31Speaker 3: trying to be that guy you know there's no protection
- 7:34Speaker 3: for him. That's probably part of it right now that
- 7:36Speaker 3: the protection around him hasn't been, you know, super solid,
- 7:39Speaker 3: And like I said, I think they're heating up a
- 7:40Speaker 3: little bit. But man, he definitely is not putting up
- 7:43Speaker 3: those power and you can't say the ballpark on the
- 7:46Speaker 3: power numbers because they have brought in the fences that
- 7:48Speaker 3: that ballpark is so much smaller than when I was there.
- 7:51Speaker 3: You can't blame it on the power numbers, you can't.
- 7:53Speaker 3: You know, you can still hit the ball hard in
- 7:55Speaker 3: places swinging mis rates a little high. So for me,
- 7:58Speaker 3: I just think he's he's getting out out of who
- 8:00Speaker 3: he was and in Boston. And if your busser, you're
- 8:03Speaker 3: kinda you're kind of you know, you kicked in the
- 8:06Speaker 3: nuts a little bit right there, you know, you kind
- 8:08Speaker 3: you didn't feel like, Man, I brought this guy in,
- 8:09Speaker 3: he could, you know, show these guys, you know, how
- 8:12Speaker 3: to you know, kind of compete and hit with power,
- 8:14Speaker 3: and he's just not doing it.
- 8:17Speaker 4: Jeremy, do you think it's more of a kicking the
- 8:19Speaker 4: nuts as you said that, you now see Kyle Harrison
- 8:21Speaker 4: dominating in the National League with the Brewers, like the
- 8:24Speaker 4: main guy in this trade that kind of went back
- 8:26Speaker 4: over the the Red Sox moved him and he was
- 8:28Speaker 4: a first round pick for the Giants and all that,
- 8:30Speaker 4: and now all of a sudden he's thriving in Milwaukee.
- 8:33Speaker 3: Yeah, it always is like that, you know, I think
- 8:36Speaker 3: that you know that was the biggest thing with Savian.
- 8:39Speaker 3: You know, he was always a trade afraid to trade
- 8:41Speaker 3: some of these bigger prospect guys because of that Zach Wheeler,
- 8:44Speaker 3: you know, I mean Beltron. We traded for Beltron and
- 8:47Speaker 3: it wasn't necessarily Beltron's fault, but he lasted a couple
- 8:49Speaker 3: of months. He was hurt at the end, and then
- 8:50Speaker 3: he went on to Saint Louis and we lost Zack Wheeler.
- 8:53Speaker 3: And look what he's gone on to do. You know,
- 8:54Speaker 3: I think that, you know, it is a risk. I
- 8:57Speaker 3: think that that trade is always a risk. That trade
- 9:00Speaker 3: is like if I have to give up a name,
- 9:02Speaker 3: hopefully I get a name back that can give us
- 9:04Speaker 3: some power, lose some pitching. And now you see what
- 9:07Speaker 3: he's doing. Any any he shoved it on us too
- 9:11Speaker 3: the other day in Milwaukee. I mean, he proved it
- 9:14Speaker 3: and it was almost like it was a weird trade
- 9:16Speaker 3: because when he got traded Boston, they sent him down.
- 9:18Speaker 3: They never even gave him a chance. Hardly he goes
- 9:20Speaker 3: over there, he starts dominating. Sometimes it's the pitching coach.
- 9:23Speaker 3: Sometimes it's you know, does he connect with how they're
- 9:26Speaker 3: running defense, how they're running the pitching coach? Talking to
- 9:29Speaker 3: him efficiency stuff like that. But it definitely, I'm sure
- 9:32Speaker 3: is one of those things where it'll get you. And
- 9:35Speaker 3: I knew, you know, he had some velocity situations when
- 9:38Speaker 3: when he was over the Giants where he had lost
- 9:40Speaker 3: some velocity. They're trying to figure out why couldn't put
- 9:43Speaker 3: their couldn't put their finger on it, you know, so
- 9:45Speaker 3: I think they might have thought of that a little bit,
- 9:47Speaker 3: you know, with just him dropping velocity. But he definitely
- 9:51Speaker 3: he's definitely doing an awesome job in Milwaukee, and sometimes
- 9:53Speaker 3: that happens.
- 9:54Speaker 2: Unfortunately, it happened to the Giants, Jeremy.
- 9:57Speaker 4: You know why Brian Savian was afraid to make trades
- 10:00Speaker 4: after about two thousand and three or four to you
- 10:04Speaker 4: exactly exactly.
- 10:10Speaker 2: Oh we heard those stories.
- 10:12Speaker 5: Oh yeah, so thank You're welcome.
- 10:13Speaker 2: You're welcome.
- 10:14Speaker 4: Giants fan, I got you guys three World series look
- 10:19Speaker 4: little Giant.
- 10:21Speaker 2: That's right, that's right, that's great, that's so funny. Yeah,
- 10:26Speaker 2: that's pretty funny.
- 10:27Speaker 1: That's good. Part two of this combo. So let's do
- 10:30Speaker 1: this build for the storm. Your book it's out, congratulations,
- 10:33Speaker 1: lay it out for us, and I want to get
- 10:35Speaker 1: into some of the intricacies of life after current playing days.
- 10:40Speaker 3: Yeah, you know that book has written a lot for
- 10:42Speaker 3: my kids. It started out that way of just you know,
- 10:45Speaker 3: if it seems morbid, but it's true. If I can
- 10:48Speaker 3: hit by a bus tomorrow, what could my kids if
- 10:51Speaker 3: I had to? If I want my kids to hear
- 10:53Speaker 3: hear something from me, what would it be? And it's
- 10:55Speaker 3: just you take on storms in life. Everybody has them.
- 10:57Speaker 3: It doesn't matter if it's in baseball, in life and relationships,
- 11:00Speaker 3: whatever it is. You know, you go through storms and
- 11:02Speaker 3: how I handled them, how I handled them base how
- 11:04Speaker 3: I handled them in baseball, how I handled them and
- 11:07Speaker 3: my life after a divorce, which is terrible, and my
- 11:11Speaker 3: kids had to kind of see that. Uh, just trying
- 11:13Speaker 3: to trying to talk to people about how we deal
- 11:15Speaker 3: with them, and it's actually kind of evolved. It's been
- 11:17Speaker 3: pretty awesome. I just came back from from a trip
- 11:20Speaker 3: from Salt Lake City. John Buck put on a pretty
- 11:23Speaker 3: awesome panel for for mental health and dealing with mental
- 11:28Speaker 3: health scenarios, and I was able to be brought in
- 11:30Speaker 3: to talk about built you know, charging the storm, taking
- 11:33Speaker 3: it on and having a heard around you. Ankio showed up,
- 11:36Speaker 3: Sean Casey Gally myself, Kyle Snyder, like you know, a
- 11:41Speaker 3: lot of a lot of guys you know, came in
- 11:44Speaker 3: for him to talk about it, and so for me,
- 11:47Speaker 3: that's what it was, right. It's something that's very important
- 11:49Speaker 3: to me when it comes to just taking on life's challenges,
- 11:52Speaker 3: but it's also very important for people to hear. And
- 11:55Speaker 3: I just felt like some of my baseball stories, some
- 11:57Speaker 3: of my life stories, letting people know that, hey, life
- 12:00Speaker 3: happens just because we're baseball players. I mean, it doesn't
- 12:03Speaker 3: it doesn't matter what you do in life. Not everything's
- 12:06Speaker 3: hunky dory and not everything's just like, oh man, everything's great.
- 12:10Speaker 3: I think you know, all of us have seen, you know,
- 12:13Speaker 3: baseball and baseball families, you know, have gone through some
- 12:15Speaker 3: terrible scenarios. So just talking to Sean about his situation
- 12:19Speaker 3: a few years ago a lot of stuff. So for me,
- 12:22Speaker 3: it was just something that I felt I could write
- 12:25Speaker 3: that I had a voice in a platform to deal
- 12:27Speaker 3: with and I get to hang out with a lot
- 12:29Speaker 3: of people, whether they be athletes or non athletes, and
- 12:32Speaker 3: just let them know that you know, life storms and
- 12:34Speaker 3: they come your way. It knocks you down, but it's
- 12:35Speaker 3: not meant to keep you down. It's actually meant to
- 12:37Speaker 3: make you stronger and to take life on. And as
- 12:40Speaker 3: long as you have a heart beating inside your chest,
- 12:41Speaker 3: you have purpose. And that was able to be expressed
- 12:44Speaker 3: in the book. It was able to be expressed this weekend.
- 12:46Speaker 3: So we got to hang out with a lot of
- 12:47Speaker 3: first responders and military guys stuff like that, so it
- 12:50Speaker 3: was pretty awesome.
- 12:51Speaker 5: You said you went through struggles while you're playing, and
- 12:54Speaker 5: after you're playing. We're all going to be ex players
- 12:57Speaker 5: at some point. Yeah, that's the biggest struggle after you
- 13:01Speaker 5: were playing, or the thing that was toughest for you
- 13:03Speaker 5: to change over from being a player.
- 13:08Speaker 3: I think I just identity, you know, is as much
- 13:10Speaker 3: as I tried not to be let baseball be my
- 13:13Speaker 3: identity as much as because I always knew it. You
- 13:16Speaker 3: weren't in a play forever. It wasn't my life. I
- 13:18Speaker 3: didn't make it my life, but it still was that.
- 13:21Speaker 3: And so when you come out of the game, it's
- 13:25Speaker 3: you don't really know, like what are you getting up for.
- 13:27Speaker 3: I don't have a routine. I can't go to a ballpark.
- 13:29Speaker 3: I don't even the off seasons. I don't know what
- 13:31Speaker 3: I'm training for. Am I going to the gym just
- 13:33Speaker 3: to stay healthier, because I'm not going to the gym
- 13:35Speaker 3: to get ready for baseball.
- 13:36Speaker 2: And then I don't have that routine.
- 13:38Speaker 3: I don't have that camaraderie, don't have those guys in
- 13:40Speaker 3: the clubhouse calling buddies up to go golf and they're like, Jeremy,
- 13:44Speaker 3: we actually work for a living. Not everybody can retire
- 13:46Speaker 3: at thirty six. And it's like a it's mind boggling.
- 13:49Speaker 3: You're like, wait, what you guys can't go golf, Like no,
- 13:51Speaker 3: we have jobs, you.
- 13:53Speaker 2: Know, and you can't hang out.
- 13:54Speaker 3: You can't you can't mess with guys the same way
- 13:56Speaker 3: people have thinner skin than baseball players do sometimes when
- 14:00Speaker 3: when you're having fun with them. So just making those
- 14:02Speaker 3: adjustments and now I'm home all the time. Now I'm
- 14:05Speaker 3: a dad, you know all the time, like I you know,
- 14:08Speaker 3: just getting in the rhythm of being a father and
- 14:11Speaker 3: what the family dynamic was. So for me, just that
- 14:14Speaker 3: whole scenario of not having the routine was really really
- 14:19Speaker 3: hard for me to adjust to, and then trying to
- 14:22Speaker 3: gain that and gain that sense of identity of like
- 14:25Speaker 3: what am I doing here now? What is my purpose?
- 14:27Speaker 3: What is my why? Going forward? And that was probably

- 15:33Speaker 4: Jeremy I obviously was a former player. Kratz was a
- 15:37Speaker 4: former player. You're a former player, and in this book
- 15:40Speaker 4: you talk about your divorce and what you went through.
- 15:42Speaker 4: And I say this all the time, like almost not everybody,
- 15:46Speaker 4: but I mean, seventy five I'm gonna throw a random number.
- 15:49Speaker 4: Seventy five percent of guys are divorce at least after
- 15:52Speaker 4: they're done playing. Is it because of the routine you
- 15:56Speaker 4: talked about. Is it because of the sense of purpose?
- 15:59Speaker 4: Is it because as your home all the time, you
- 16:01Speaker 4: don't have road trips to and then you have the
- 16:03Speaker 4: I missed you, honey, We're back together after being gone
- 16:06Speaker 4: for a week all the time? Right, What do you
- 16:08Speaker 4: think that is? Because it's always fascinating. I mean I
- 16:11Speaker 4: think about all the guys I played with, and like,
- 16:13Speaker 4: I'm not saying every guy's divorce, but there's very few.
- 16:16Speaker 4: There's much more divorce than are still married to their
- 16:18Speaker 4: original wives.
- 16:20Speaker 3: Yeah, and you know, be honest with you, I was,
- 16:22Speaker 3: even though I didn't think I'd ever be part of
- 16:24Speaker 3: that statistic. I mean, I'm a family guy, like it
- 16:27Speaker 3: was a very terrible thing.
- 16:28Speaker 2: For me.
- 16:29Speaker 3: It wasn't my call. You know, all these I'm like,
- 16:32Speaker 3: what just happened? I don't, I don't know, you know.
- 16:35Speaker 3: And so for me it wasn't about I mean, I
- 16:38Speaker 3: did the best I could.
- 16:39Speaker 2: You know, I didn't.
- 16:40Speaker 3: I didn't know that I was not you know, adding up,
- 16:44Speaker 3: you know, I mean, not everybody's perfect, but I definitely was,
- 16:47Speaker 3: you know, I shoot, I was. I was faithful to
- 16:50Speaker 3: my to my wife, I was faithful, you know, to my.
- 16:52Speaker 2: Family, my kids. I mean, none of that, you know.
- 16:55Speaker 3: So I think that, you know, for me, sometimes after
- 16:57Speaker 3: the game, it is that aj it is that it's
- 17:00Speaker 3: your home all the time. There's an interesting dynamic. You're
- 17:03Speaker 3: part of it.
- 17:04Speaker 2: Now.
- 17:05Speaker 3: Now it's not like, hey, you know, I got to
- 17:07Speaker 3: go to the I gotta be the field every day
- 17:09Speaker 3: at one o'clock. I'm not coming home till ten or eleven.
- 17:12Speaker 3: Now home more often than not, I'm trying to assert
- 17:15Speaker 3: some like hey man, I'm your dad. You know, I'm
- 17:18Speaker 3: the husband. I want to try to help out where
- 17:20Speaker 3: I can. I want so you're home a lot. So
- 17:22Speaker 3: now things kind of mess up that dynamic of the family,
- 17:26Speaker 3: at least probably from the spouse's perspective, and you just
- 17:29Speaker 3: don't get on the same page. And I think there's
- 17:32Speaker 3: a lot of people love I think even the wives
- 17:34Speaker 3: are lost when the husband's retired because it's like it
- 17:37Speaker 3: was their skit too right, it was their rhythm, it
- 17:40Speaker 3: was their routine, and then other things just start getting
- 17:44Speaker 3: out of hand and you start being around each other more.
- 17:46Speaker 2: And then I guess possibly.
- 17:48Speaker 3: It could be the fact that you just you just
- 17:51Speaker 3: didn't know a lot about each other to be around
- 17:53Speaker 3: each other that often, and you kind of we're married
- 17:56Speaker 3: in the game, so it was like you have your thing,
- 17:58Speaker 3: I have mine. Now I don't my thing now I'm
- 18:01Speaker 3: part of this thing all the time, and they're like,
- 18:03Speaker 3: what do you And it just doesn't make sense, and
- 18:05Speaker 3: things get exposed. Probably unhealthiness gets exposed, and it just
- 18:10Speaker 3: depends on if people can get through it or not.
- 18:12Speaker 3: But it is shocking how many, how many get divorced
- 18:15Speaker 3: and good guys, man guys that like, I'm not saying,
- 18:19Speaker 3: I'm not gonna say I don't only volunteers. I'm a
- 18:21Speaker 3: good guy, but I felt like I was. It wasn't
- 18:23Speaker 3: this situation that I thought was a divorce situation and
- 18:26Speaker 3: then you talk to all these other guys that are
- 18:28Speaker 3: just like what you're.
- 18:29Speaker 2: Divorced, Like how's that?
- 18:30Speaker 3: You know, it's it's really is sad, but it is tough.
- 18:34Speaker 3: Baseball is tough on families. I think it's like military
- 18:37Speaker 3: light style in that way. And I think that's what
- 18:39Speaker 3: a lot of fans don't understand, is the toll that
- 18:43Speaker 3: it takes on families and the amount of things that
- 18:45Speaker 3: are hidden, you know, because we do get to go
- 18:47Speaker 3: on road trips and then come back and and anytime
- 18:50Speaker 3: there's friction, well you leave on a road trip again
- 18:52Speaker 3: and you let it go and you come back. And
- 18:54Speaker 3: so it's a tough deal and it's an unfortunate one
- 18:58Speaker 3: for sure.
- 18:59Speaker 5: It's a great explanation.
- 19:00Speaker 4: Like my wife always told me, She's like, you were there,
- 19:02Speaker 4: but you weren't there during the season, right because for
- 19:06Speaker 4: those that week you're home, you're still in your mind,
- 19:08Speaker 4: especially now as a starting pitcher, I think you were.
- 19:11Speaker 4: You were a reliever, so you were a little more
- 19:13Speaker 4: equal to a position player because you never knew when
- 19:15Speaker 4: you were going to pitch. But in my mind, as
- 19:17Speaker 4: a position player, and I think about this a lot,
- 19:19Speaker 4: I was home for that week or ten days whatever.
- 19:22Speaker 4: I was home, but in my mind I was like, Okay,
- 19:24Speaker 4: what time do I have to be at the field?
- 19:25Speaker 4: Who we facing the night? Who's pitching for us? You
- 19:27Speaker 4: were there, but you weren't there, right, You were present,
- 19:31Speaker 4: but not fully present in mind and body. And then
- 19:34Speaker 4: you get you don't have that anymore, and then you're oh,
- 19:37Speaker 4: I'm home. I have to you know, change diapers, I
- 19:39Speaker 4: have to take the kids of school. I have to
- 19:40Speaker 4: do this, I have to do homework. You're like, wait,
- 19:42Speaker 4: where's this game, where's this roadch where's my brain? And
- 19:45Speaker 4: I think that's where as a former player, you kind
- 19:47Speaker 4: of don't understand and it's hard to get through.
- 19:51Speaker 2: Yeah, it is, and there's different scenarios. You know. I
- 19:56Speaker 2: talked to and it's tough.
- 19:58Speaker 3: I mean, we don't we we don't like to be
- 20:01Speaker 3: I get it. There's a lot of fans cheering for us.
- 20:03Speaker 3: I talked to one player that looked at me and said, man,
- 20:05Speaker 3: I just honestly, you know, when I knew it was over.
- 20:08Speaker 3: One of the things that he said is I just
- 20:10Speaker 3: wanted to be thanked. I just wanted to say, hey,
- 20:12Speaker 3: thank you for what you did on the baseball Thank
- 20:14Speaker 3: you for a hard heart. It was like you went
- 20:15Speaker 3: through every day, the stress, the performance, anxiety, all that stuff.
- 20:19Speaker 3: Is just just to thank you. I never got it,
- 20:21Speaker 3: you know, it was just well, this is just what
- 20:22Speaker 3: you did, and you you you you should have done
- 20:25Speaker 3: that or that was your job. But there's a lot
- 20:27Speaker 3: that we do. And so some guys don't feel that.
- 20:29Speaker 3: Some some dishonest honestly, I don't. It wasn't necessarily my situation.
- 20:35Speaker 2: A lot of guys just they don't. They didn't like
- 20:36Speaker 2: each other.
- 20:37Speaker 3: They didn't like each other when they played either, but
- 20:38Speaker 3: they got their breaks and so then when they don't
- 20:40Speaker 3: have that break, and then also I think some guys
- 20:44Speaker 3: they just go through the mental health side of things.
- 20:47Speaker 2: I think that that it breaks them down. It does.
- 20:49Speaker 3: When they're not playing anymore, they lose it a little
- 20:52Speaker 3: bit up there, of the mental health side of the anxiety,
- 20:56Speaker 3: the loss of understanding who they are, they check out maybe,
- 21:00Speaker 3: you know, when they do retire, they have a hard
- 21:03Speaker 3: time functioning and and I'm sure that spouses just get
- 21:06Speaker 3: tired of that as well. And so there's been a
- 21:09Speaker 3: lot of different scenarios that I've heard, and it's unfortunate,
- 21:12Speaker 3: and you can't put a finger on it. And it
- 21:15Speaker 3: really is sad because I think there are some guys
- 21:18Speaker 3: that maybe want it and there's other guys that just
- 21:21Speaker 3: didn't see it coming, you know, And so that's a
- 21:24Speaker 3: tough deal too, And that's a tough bout And that's
- 21:27Speaker 3: why I wrote the book because I said, Man, the
- 21:29Speaker 3: storms don't always let you know they're coming. They come,
- 21:31Speaker 3: but it's not Sometimes you bring upon yourself, sometimes others
- 21:35Speaker 3: bring it upon you. But the reality of it is
- 21:37Speaker 3: they're still there. The storms are still there. So now
- 21:40Speaker 3: how are you going to handle that? Because you have
- 21:41Speaker 3: kids looking up to you, you have life. There is
- 21:44Speaker 3: life after this, and how do you do it appropriately?
- 21:47Speaker 3: And how do you come out healthy on the other side.
- 21:49Speaker 3: And that's kind of what I wrote the book on,
- 21:51Speaker 3: was how do you come out healthy on the other
- 21:52Speaker 3: side of it?
- 21:53Speaker 2: Whatever storm it is.
- 21:55Speaker 3: And in baseball, I think there's a lot of them,
- 21:57Speaker 3: but one of them is a family dynamic because there's
- 22:00Speaker 3: is involved, man a lot of times, and that's terrible
- 22:02Speaker 3: on them. So that that's unfortunate thing as well.
- 22:06Speaker 1: That's a really good combo. Let's show the book one
- 22:08Speaker 1: more time to here on the way out so people
- 22:11Speaker 1: can see what it looks like there. It is built
- 22:13Speaker 1: for the storm. I like the cover and it's available
- 22:16Speaker 1: at jeremyfl dot com. A F F E L D
- 22:19Speaker 1: T Jeremy. Congrats on the book, Man and really enjoying combo.
- 22:23Speaker 1: Always enjoy it. Good catching up.
- 22:24Speaker 3: Yeah, appreciate it. Thank you man. Appreciate you guys for
- 22:27Speaker 3: the for the dialogue. That was awesome.
