- 0:00Speaker 1: Chapter thirty one of the neglect of every creature, that
- 0:05Speaker 1: the creator may be found. O Lord, I still need
- 0:12Speaker 1: more grace if I would arrive where neither man nor
- 0:17Speaker 1: any other creature may hinder me. For so long as
- 0:22Speaker 1: anything keepeth me back, I cannot freely fly unto thee
- 0:28Speaker 1: he desired eagerly thus to fly, who cried, saying, oh,
- 0:33Speaker 1: that I had wings like a dove? For then would
- 0:36Speaker 1: I fly away and be at rest? What is more
- 0:40Speaker 1: peaceful than the single eye? And what more free than
- 0:45Speaker 1: he that desireth nothing upon earth. Therefore must a man
- 0:50Speaker 1: rise above every creature and perfectly forsake himself, and with
- 0:56Speaker 1: abstracted mind to stand and behold that thou, the creator
- 1:01Speaker 1: of all things, hast among thy creatures nothing like unto thyself.
- 1:07Speaker 1: And except a man be freed from all creatures, he
- 1:10Speaker 1: will not be able to reach freely after divine things.
- 1:16Speaker 1: Therefore few are found who give themselves to contemplation, because
- 1:20Speaker 1: few know how to separate themselves entirely from perishing and
- 1:25Speaker 1: created things. For this much grace is necessary, which may
- 1:32Speaker 1: lift up the soul and raise it above itself. And
- 1:37Speaker 1: except a man be lifted up in the spirit and
- 1:40Speaker 1: freed from all creatures and altogether united to God. Whatsoever
- 1:46Speaker 1: he knoweth, whatsoever even he hath it mattereth. But little
- 1:52Speaker 1: he who esteemeth anything great, save the one only incomprehensible
- 1:58Speaker 1: eternal good, shall long time be little and lie low.
- 2:04Speaker 1: For whatsoever is not God is nothing, and ought to
- 2:08Speaker 1: be counted for nothing. Great is the difference between a
- 2:13Speaker 1: godly man illuminated with wisdom and a scholar, learned in
- 2:18Speaker 1: knowledge and given to books. Far nobler is that doctrine
- 2:23Speaker 1: which floweth down from the divine fullness above, than that
- 2:28Speaker 1: which is acquired laboriously by human study. Many are found
- 2:34Speaker 1: who desire contemplation, but they do not strive to practice
- 2:39Speaker 1: those things which are required thereunto. It is also a
- 2:44Speaker 1: great impediment that much is made of symbols and external signs,
- 2:49Speaker 1: and too little of thorough mortification. I know not how
- 2:54Speaker 1: it is, and by what spirit we are led, and
- 2:58Speaker 1: what we who would be deemed spiritual our aiming at that,
- 3:02Speaker 1: we give so great labour and so eager solicitude for
- 3:06Speaker 1: transitory and worthless things, and scarcely ever gather our senses
- 3:11Speaker 1: together to think at all of our inward condition. Ah
- 3:17Speaker 1: me forthwith, After a little recollection, we rush out of doors,
- 3:23Speaker 1: and do not subject our actions to a strict examination.
- 3:28Speaker 1: Where our affections are set, we take no heed, and
- 3:32Speaker 1: we weep not that all things belonging to us are
- 3:35Speaker 1: so defiled. For because all flesh had corrupted itself upon earth,
- 3:42Speaker 1: the great deluge came. Since therefore our inmost affections are
- 3:48Speaker 1: very corrupt, it followeth of necessity that our actions also
- 3:53Speaker 1: are corrupt. Being the index of a deficient inward strength,
- 3:59Speaker 1: out of pure heart proceedeth the fruit of good living.
- 4:05Speaker 1: We demand how much a man hath done, but from
- 4:09Speaker 1: how much virtue he acted is not so narrowly considered.
- 4:15Speaker 1: We ask if he be strong, rich, handsome, clever, whether
- 4:20Speaker 1: he is a good writer, good singer, good workman, But
- 4:25Speaker 1: how poor he may be in spirit, how patient and gentle,
- 4:30Speaker 1: how devout and meditative? On these things many are silent.
- 4:37Speaker 1: Nature looketh upon the outward appearance of a man. Grace
- 4:42Speaker 1: turneth its thought to the heart. The former frequently judgeth amiss.
- 4:48Speaker 1: The latter trusteth in God that it may not be deceived.
- 4:55Speaker 1: Chapter thirty two of self Denial and the casting away
- 5:00Speaker 1: all selfishness. My son Thou canst not possess perfect liberty
- 5:08Speaker 1: unless thou altogether deny thyself all. They are enslaved, who
- 5:14Speaker 1: are possessors of riches. They who love themselves, the selfish,
- 5:21Speaker 1: the curious, the restless, those who ever seek after soft
- 5:26Speaker 1: things and not after the things of Jesus Christ, those
- 5:31Speaker 1: who continually plan and devise that which will not stand,
- 5:36Speaker 1: for whatsoever cometh not of God shall perish. Hold fast
- 5:42Speaker 1: the short and complete saying. Renounce all things, and thou
- 5:47Speaker 1: shalt find all things. Give up thy lust, and thou
- 5:52Speaker 1: shalt find rest dwell upon this in thy mind. And
- 5:57Speaker 1: when thou art full of it, thou shalt understand, and
- 6:00Speaker 1: all things, O Lord, this is not the work of
- 6:05Speaker 1: a day, nor children's play. Verily, in this short saying
- 6:11Speaker 1: is enclosed all the perfection of the religious. My son,
- 6:16Speaker 1: Thou artist not to be turned aside nor immediately cast down,
- 6:21Speaker 1: because thou hast heard the way of the perfect Rather
- 6:25Speaker 1: aughtist thou to be provoked to higher aims, and at
- 6:29Speaker 1: the least to long after the desire thereof Oh, that
- 6:34Speaker 1: it were so with THEE, and that thou hadst come
- 6:38Speaker 1: to this, that thou wert not a lover of thine
- 6:40Speaker 1: own self, but wert ready always to my nod and
- 6:45Speaker 1: to His whom I have placed over thee as thy father.
- 6:50Speaker 1: Then shouldst thou please me exceedingly, and all thy life
- 6:54Speaker 1: should go on in joy and peace. Thou hast still
- 6:59Speaker 1: many things to renounce, which, if thou resign not utterly
- 7:03Speaker 1: to me, thou shalt not gain what thou seekest. I
- 7:08Speaker 1: counsel THEE to buy of me gold tried in the fire,
- 7:12Speaker 1: that thou mayest be rich Revelation three, verse eighteen. That
- 7:19Speaker 1: is heavenly wisdom, which despiseth all base things put away
- 7:25Speaker 1: from thee, earthly wisdom, and all pleasure, whether common to
- 7:30Speaker 1: man or thine own. I tell THEE that thou must
- 7:35Speaker 1: buy vile things with those which are costly and great
- 7:39Speaker 1: in the esteem of men. For wonderfully vile and small,
- 7:44Speaker 1: and almost given up to forgetfulness, doth true heavenly wisdom appear,
- 7:50Speaker 1: which thinketh not high things of itself, nor seeketh to
- 7:54Speaker 1: be magnified upon the earth. Many honor it with their lips,
- 8:00Speaker 1: but in heart are far from it. It is indeed
- 8:04Speaker 1: the precious pearl which is hidden from many. Chapter thirty
- 8:10Speaker 1: three of Instability of the heart, and of directing the
- 8:14Speaker 1: aim towards God. My son, Trust not thy feeling, for
- 8:22Speaker 1: that which is now will be quickly changed into somewhat else.
- 8:27Speaker 1: As long as thou livest, thou art subject to change,
- 8:31Speaker 1: howsoever unwilling, so that thou art found now joyful, now sad,
- 8:38Speaker 1: now at peace, now disquieted, now devout, now in devout,
- 8:46Speaker 1: now studious, now careless, now sad, now cheerful. But the
- 8:53Speaker 1: wise man, and he who is truly learned in spirit,
- 8:58Speaker 1: standeth above these chainle things, attentive not to what he
- 9:03Speaker 1: may feel in himself, or from what quarter the wind
- 9:06Speaker 1: may blow, but that the whole intent of his mind
- 9:10Speaker 1: may carry him on to the dew and much desired end.
- 9:15Speaker 1: For thus will he be able to remain one and
- 9:18Speaker 1: the same and unshaken, the single eye of his desire
- 9:23Speaker 1: being steadfastly fixed through the manifold changes of the world
- 9:29Speaker 1: upon me. But according as the eye of intention be
- 9:34Speaker 1: the more pure, even so will a man make his
- 9:37Speaker 1: way steadfastly through the manifold storms. But in many the
- 9:42Speaker 1: eye of pure intention waxeth dim for it quickly rests
- 9:47Speaker 1: itself upon anything pleasant which occurreth and rarely is any
- 9:52Speaker 1: man found altogether free from the blemish of self seeking.
- 9:57Speaker 1: So the Jews of old came to Bethel, to the
- 10:01Speaker 1: house of Martha and Mary, that they might see not
- 10:04Speaker 1: Jesus but Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead.
- 10:09Speaker 1: John twelve, verse nine. Therefore must the eye of the
- 10:14Speaker 1: intention be cleansed, that it may be single and right,
- 10:19Speaker 1: and above all things which come in its way may
- 10:23Speaker 1: be directed unto me. Chapter thirty four. That to him
- 10:30Speaker 1: who loveth God is sweet above all things, and in
- 10:34Speaker 1: all things, behold, God is mine, and all things are mine.
- 10:43Speaker 1: What will I more and what more happy thing can
- 10:46Speaker 1: I desire? O delightsome and sweet world. That is to
- 10:52Speaker 1: him that loveth the word, not the world, neither the
- 10:56Speaker 1: things that are in the world. One John two, verse fifteen,
- 11:04Speaker 1: My God, my All. To him that understandeth that word sufficeth,
- 11:10Speaker 1: and to repeat it often is pleasing to him that
- 11:13Speaker 1: loveth it. When thou art present, all things are pleasant.
- 11:19Speaker 1: When thou art absent, all things are wearisome. Thou makest
- 11:24Speaker 1: the heart to be at rest, givest it deep peace
- 11:28Speaker 1: and festal joy. Thou makest it to think rightly in
- 11:32Speaker 1: every matter, and in every matter to give THEE praise.
- 11:38Speaker 1: Neither can anything please long without THEE. But if it
- 11:41Speaker 1: would be pleasant and of sweet savor, thy grace must
- 11:46Speaker 1: be there. And it is Thy wisdom which must give
- 11:49Speaker 1: unto it a sweet savor. To him who tasteth THEE,
- 11:56Speaker 1: what can be distasteful. And to him who tasteth THEE,
- 12:01Speaker 1: not what is there which can make him joyous. But
- 12:06Speaker 1: the worldly wise, and they who enjoy the flesh, these
- 12:11Speaker 1: fail in Thy wisdom. For in the wisdom of the
- 12:14Speaker 1: world is found utter vanity, and to be carnally minded
- 12:19Speaker 1: is death. But they who follow after THEE, through contempt
- 12:24Speaker 1: of worldly things and mortification of the flesh, are found
- 12:30Speaker 1: to be truly wise, because they are carried from vanity
- 12:34Speaker 1: to verity, from the flesh to the spirit. They taste
- 12:40Speaker 1: that the Lord is good. And whatsoever good they find
- 12:44Speaker 1: in creatures, they count it all unto the praise of
- 12:48Speaker 1: the Creator. Unlike, yea very unlike is the enjoyment of
- 12:54Speaker 1: the Creator, to enjoyment of the creature, the enjoyment of
- 12:59Speaker 1: eturny and of time, of light uncreated and of light reflected,
- 13:08Speaker 1: o light everlasting, surpassing all created lights. Dart down Thy
- 13:14Speaker 1: ray from on high, which shall pierce the inmost depths
- 13:18Speaker 1: of my heart, Give purity, joy, clearness, life to my spirit,
- 13:25Speaker 1: that with all its powers it may cleave unto thee
- 13:28Speaker 1: with rapture passing man's understanding. Oh, when shall that blessed
- 13:34Speaker 1: and longed for time come? When thou shalt satisfy me
- 13:38Speaker 1: with thy presence and be unto me all in all,
- 13:43Speaker 1: So long as this is delayed, my joy shall not befall.
- 13:48Speaker 1: Still are me the old man liveth in me? He
- 13:53Speaker 1: is not yet all crucified, not yet quite dead. Still
- 13:58Speaker 1: he lusteth fiercely again against the spirit, wageth inward wars,
- 14:03Speaker 1: nor suffereth the soul's kingdom to be in peace. But Thou,
- 14:09Speaker 1: who rulest the raging of the sea, and stillest the
- 14:12Speaker 1: waves thereof when they arise, rise up and help me
- 14:17Speaker 1: scatter the people that delight in war Psalms sixty eight,
- 14:22Speaker 1: verse thirty, destroy them by thy power. Show forth. I
- 14:28Speaker 1: beseech thee thy might, and let thy right hand be glorified,
- 14:33Speaker 1: For I have no hope, no refuge save in THEE,
- 14:37Speaker 1: O Lord, my God, Chapter thirty five. That there is
- 14:44Speaker 1: no security against temptation in this life, My son, Thou
- 14:51Speaker 1: art never secure in this life, but thy spiritual armor
- 14:55Speaker 1: will always be needful for THEE. As long as thou livest,
- 15:00Speaker 1: Thou dwellest among foes, and art attacked on the right
- 15:04Speaker 1: hand and on the left. If therefore thou use not
- 15:09Speaker 1: on all sides the shield of patience, thou wilt not
- 15:13Speaker 1: remain long unwounded. Above all. If thou keep not thy
- 15:18Speaker 1: heart fixed upon me with steadfast purpose to bear all
- 15:22Speaker 1: things for my sake, thou shalt not be able to
- 15:26Speaker 1: bear the fierceness of the attack, nor to attain to
- 15:30Speaker 1: the victory of the blessed. Therefore must thou struggle bravely
- 15:35Speaker 1: all thy life through and put forth a strong hand
- 15:39Speaker 1: against those things which oppose THEE. For to him that
- 15:44Speaker 1: overcometh is the hidden manner given Revelation two, verse seventeen.
- 15:52Speaker 1: But great misery is reserved for the slothful. If thou
- 15:57Speaker 1: seek rest in this life, how then wilt thou attain
- 16:01Speaker 1: unto the rest which is eternal. Set not thyself to
- 16:05Speaker 1: attain much rest, but much patience. Seek the true peace,
- 16:12Speaker 1: not on earth but in Heaven, not in man, nor
- 16:16Speaker 1: in any created thing, but in God alone. For the
- 16:21Speaker 1: love of God. Thou must willingly undergo all things, whether
- 16:26Speaker 1: labours or sorrows, temptations, vexations, anxieties, necessities, infirmities, injuries, gainsayings, rebukes, humiliations, confusions, corrections, despisings.
- 16:47Speaker 1: These things help unto virtue. These things prove the scholar
- 16:52Speaker 1: of Christ. These things fashion the heavenly crown. I will
- 16:58Speaker 1: give thee an eternal reward for short labour and infinite
- 17:02Speaker 1: glory for transient shame. Thinkest thou that thou shalt always
- 17:09Speaker 1: have spiritual consolations at thy will. My saints had never such,
- 17:16Speaker 1: but instead thereof manifold griefs and diverse temptations and heavy desolations.
- 17:24Speaker 1: But patiently they bore themselves in all and trusted in
- 17:28Speaker 1: God more than in themselves, knowing that the sufferings of
- 17:33Speaker 1: this present time are not worthy to be compared with
- 17:37Speaker 1: the glory which shall be revealed in us Romans eight,
- 17:42Speaker 1: verse seventeen. Wouldst thou have that immediately which many have
- 17:48Speaker 1: hardly attained unto, after many tears and hard labours. Wait
- 17:54Speaker 1: for the Lord. Quit thyself like a man, and be strong,
- 17:59Speaker 1: not faint hearted, nor go aside from me. But constantly
- 18:05Speaker 1: devote thy body and soul to the glory of God.
- 18:09Speaker 1: I will reward THEE plenteously. I will be with THEE
- 18:13Speaker 1: in trouble, Psalm ninety one, verse fifteen, Chapter thirty six,
- 18:23Speaker 1: against vain judgments of men, My son, anchor thy soul
- 18:30Speaker 1: firmly upon God, and fear not man's judgment. When conscious
- 18:36Speaker 1: pronounceth THEE pious and innocent, it is good and blessed.
- 18:42Speaker 1: Thus to suffer, nor will it be grievous to the heart,
- 18:46Speaker 1: which is humble, and which trusteth in God more than
- 18:50Speaker 1: in itself. Many men have many opinions, and therefore little
- 18:56Speaker 1: trust is to be placed in them, but moreolver it
- 19:00Speaker 1: is impossible to please all. Although Paul studied to please
- 19:06Speaker 1: all men in the Lord, and to become all things
- 19:09Speaker 1: to all men one Corinthians nine, verse twenty two. Yet nevertheless,
- 19:16Speaker 1: with him it was a very small thing that he
- 19:19Speaker 1: should be judged by man's judgment one Corinthians four, verse three.
- 19:27Speaker 1: He labored abundantly, as much as in him lay for
- 19:31Speaker 1: the building up and the salvation of others. But he
- 19:35Speaker 1: could not avoid being sometimes judged and despised by others.
- 19:40Speaker 1: Therefore he committed all to God, who knew all, and
- 19:44Speaker 1: by patience and humility, defended himself against evil speakers or
- 19:50Speaker 1: foolish and false thinkers, and those who accused him according
- 19:55Speaker 1: to their pleasure. Nevertheless, from time to time he replied,
- 20:01Speaker 1: lest his silence should become a stumbling block to those
- 20:04Speaker 1: who were weak. Who art thou, that thou shouldst be
- 20:10Speaker 1: afraid of a man that shall die. To day he is,
- 20:15Speaker 1: and to morrow his place is not found. Fear God,
- 20:19Speaker 1: and thou shalt not quail before the terrors of men.
- 20:24Speaker 1: What can any man do against THEE by words or deeds,
- 20:29Speaker 1: he hurteth himself more than THEE, nor shall he escape
- 20:33Speaker 1: the judgment of God, whosoever he may be. Have thou
- 20:38Speaker 1: God before thine eyes, and do not contend with fretful words.
- 20:44Speaker 1: And if for the present thou seem to give way
- 20:47Speaker 1: and to suffer confusion, which thou hast not deserved, be
- 20:52Speaker 1: not angry at this, nor by impatience diminish thy reward,
- 20:57Speaker 1: but rather look up to Me in Heaven, For I
- 21:00Speaker 1: am able to deliver THEE from all confusion and hurt,
- 21:04Speaker 1: and to render to every man. According to his works,
- 21:11Speaker 1: Chapter thirty seven of Pure and entire resignation of self
- 21:18Speaker 1: for the obtaining liberty of heart, my son, lose thyself,
- 21:26Speaker 1: and thou shalt find me stand still without all choosing
- 21:32Speaker 1: and all thought of self, and thou shalt ever be
- 21:36Speaker 1: a gainer. For more grace shall be added to THEE
- 21:41Speaker 1: as soon as thou resignest thyself, and so long as
- 21:45Speaker 1: thou dost not turn back to take thyself again. O Lord,
- 21:51Speaker 1: how often shall I resign myself? And in what things?
- 21:55Speaker 1: Shall I lose myself? Always every hour? In that which
- 22:02Speaker 1: is little and in that which is great? I make
- 22:07Speaker 1: no exception. But will that thou be found naked in
- 22:11Speaker 1: all things? Otherwise, how canst thou be mine and I thine?
- 22:17Speaker 1: Unless thou be inwardly and outwardly free from every will
- 22:22Speaker 1: of thine own. The sooner thou dost this, the better
- 22:26Speaker 1: shall it be with THEE. And the more fully and sincerely,
- 22:31Speaker 1: the more thou shalt please me, and the more abundantly
- 22:34Speaker 1: shalt thou be rewarded. Some resign themselves, but with certain reservations,
- 22:42Speaker 1: for they do not fully trust in God. Therefore they
- 22:46Speaker 1: think that they have some provision to make for themselves.
- 22:51Speaker 1: Some again at first offer everything, but Afterwards, being pressed
- 22:55Speaker 1: by temptation, they return to their own devices, and thus
- 23:01Speaker 1: make no progress in virtue. They will not attain to
- 23:05Speaker 1: the true liberty of a pure heart, nor to the
- 23:08Speaker 1: grace of my sweet companionship, unless they first entirely resign
- 23:14Speaker 1: themselves and daily offer themselves up as a sacrifice. Without this,
- 23:21Speaker 1: the union which bringeth forth fruit standeth not, nor will stand.
- 23:29Speaker 1: Many a time I have said unto THEE, and now
- 23:32Speaker 1: say again, give thyself up. Resign thyself, and thou shalt
- 23:37Speaker 1: have great inward peace, Give all for all, demand nothing,
- 23:44Speaker 1: ask nothing in return, Stand simply and with no hesitation
- 23:50Speaker 1: in me, and thou shalt possess me. Thou shalt have
- 23:55Speaker 1: liberty of heart, and the darkness shall not overwhel THEE.
- 24:01Speaker 1: For this strive thou pray for it long after it,
- 24:07Speaker 1: that thou mayest be delivered from all possession of thyself
- 24:12Speaker 1: and nakedly follow Jesus, who was made naked for THEE.
- 24:17Speaker 1: Mayest die unto thyself and live eternally to me. Then
- 24:24Speaker 1: shall all vain fancies disappear, all evil disturbings, all superfluous cares.
- 24:32Speaker 1: Then also shall immoderate fear depart from THEE, and inordinate
- 24:38Speaker 1: love shall die Chapter thirty eight, of a good government
- 24:48Speaker 1: in external things, and of having recourse to God in dangers,
- 24:55Speaker 1: my son. For this thou must diligently make thy endeavor,
- 25:01Speaker 1: that in every place and outward action or occupation, thou
- 25:05Speaker 1: mayest be free within and have power over thyself, and
- 25:11Speaker 1: that all things be under thee, and not thou under them,
- 25:17Speaker 1: that thou be master and ruler of thy actions, not
- 25:21Speaker 1: a slave or hireling, but rather a free and true Hebrew,
- 25:26Speaker 1: entering into the lot and the liberty of the children
- 25:30Speaker 1: of God, who stand above the present and look upon
- 25:34Speaker 1: the eternal, who with the left eye behold things transitory
- 25:39Speaker 1: and with the right things heavenly, whom temporal things draw
- 25:44Speaker 1: not to cleave unto, but who rather draw temporal things
- 25:49Speaker 1: to do them good service, even as they were ordained
- 25:52Speaker 1: of God to do, and appointed by the Master Workman,
- 25:57Speaker 1: who hath left naught in his creation without aim and end.
- 26:04Speaker 1: And if in any chance of life, thou stand not
- 26:07Speaker 1: in outward appearances nor judgest things which are seen and
- 26:11Speaker 1: heard by the fleshly sense, but straight away in every cause,
- 26:16Speaker 1: enterest with Moses into the tabernacle to ask counsel of God,
- 26:22Speaker 1: thou shalt hear a divine response, and come forth instructed
- 26:26Speaker 1: concerning many things that are and shall be. For always
- 26:32Speaker 1: Moses had recourse to the tabernacle for the solving of
- 26:35Speaker 1: all doubts and questionings, and fled to the help of
- 26:40Speaker 1: prayer to be delivered from the dangers and evil deeds
- 26:44Speaker 1: of men. Thus also aughtist thou to fly to the
- 26:49Speaker 1: secret chamber of thy heart and earnestly implore the divine succor.
- 26:55Speaker 1: For this cause. We read that Joshua and the children
- 26:58Speaker 1: of Israel were deceived by the Gibeonites that they ask
- 27:03Speaker 1: not counsel at the mouth of the Lord Joshua nine
- 27:08Speaker 1: verse fourteen, but being too ready to listen to fair speeches,
- 27:13Speaker 1: were deceived by pretended piety Chapter thirty nine, that man
- 27:21Speaker 1: must not be immersed in business. My son, always commit
- 27:28Speaker 1: thy cause to me. I will dispose it aright in
- 27:32Speaker 1: due time. Wait for my arrangement of it, and then
- 27:37Speaker 1: thou shalt find it for thy profit, Oh Lord, write freely,
- 27:43Speaker 1: I commit all things to thee for my planning can profit.
- 27:48Speaker 1: But little oh, that I did not dwell so much
- 27:51Speaker 1: on future events, but could offer myself altogether to thy
- 27:55Speaker 1: pleasures without delay, My son. A man often striveth vehemently
- 28:03Speaker 1: after somewhat which he desireth, But when he hath obtained it,
- 28:08Speaker 1: he beginneth to be of another mind, because his affections
- 28:12Speaker 1: towards it are not lasting, but rather rush on from
- 28:16Speaker 1: one thing to another. Therefore it is not really a
- 28:21Speaker 1: small thing, when in small things we resist self. The
- 28:27Speaker 1: true progress of man lieth in self denial. And a
- 28:31Speaker 1: man who denieth himself is free and safe. But the
- 28:36Speaker 1: old enemy, a poser of all good things, ceaseth not
- 28:41Speaker 1: from temptation, but day and night setteth his wicked snares.
- 28:47Speaker 1: If haply he may be able to entrap the unwary,
- 28:51Speaker 1: watch and pray saith the Lord lest ye enter into temptation.
- 28:59Speaker 1: Matthew twenty, verse forty one, chapter forty. That man hath
- 29:07Speaker 1: no good in himself, and nothing whereof to glory Lord?
- 29:14Speaker 1: What is man that thou art mindful of him? Or
- 29:18Speaker 1: the son of man that thou visitest him? Psalm eight,
- 29:22Speaker 1: verse four. What hath man deserved that thou shouldst bestow
- 29:29Speaker 1: thy favor upon him? Lord? What cause can I have
- 29:34Speaker 1: of complaint if thou forsake me or what can I
- 29:39Speaker 1: justly allege? If thou refuse to hear my petition of
- 29:44Speaker 1: a truth, this I may truly think and say, Lord,
- 29:48Speaker 1: I am nothing. I have nothing that is good of myself.
- 29:53Speaker 1: But I fall short in all things, and ever tend
- 29:57Speaker 1: unto nothing. And unless I am helped by THEE and
- 30:02Speaker 1: inwardly supported, I become altogether lukewarm and reckless. But Thou,
- 30:10Speaker 1: o Lord, art always the same and endurest forever, always good,
- 30:17Speaker 1: righteous and holy, doing all things well, righteously and holy,
- 30:23Speaker 1: and disposing all in thy wisdom. But I, who am
- 30:28Speaker 1: more ready to go forward than backward, never continue in
- 30:32Speaker 1: one's stay, because changes sevenfold pass over me. Yet it
- 30:38Speaker 1: quickly becometh better when it so pleaseth THEE, and thou
- 30:42Speaker 1: puttest forth thy hand to help me, because thou alone
- 30:46Speaker 1: canst aid without help of man, and canst so strengthen me,
- 30:51Speaker 1: that my countenance shall be no more changed. But my
- 30:55Speaker 1: heart shall be turned to THEE and rest in THEE alone. Wherefore,
- 31:03Speaker 1: if I but knew well how to reject all human consolations,
- 31:08Speaker 1: whether for the sake of gaining devotion or because of
- 31:12Speaker 1: the necessity by which I was compelled to seek Thee.
- 31:16Speaker 1: Seeing there is no man who can comfort me, Then
- 31:20Speaker 1: could I worthily trust in Thy grace and rejoice in
- 31:24Speaker 1: the gift of new consolation. Thanks be to THEE, from
- 31:30Speaker 1: whom all cometh. Whensoever it goeth well with me. But
- 31:36Speaker 1: I am vanity and nothing in thy sight, a man
- 31:40Speaker 1: inconstant and weak. What then have I whereof to glory?
- 31:47Speaker 1: Or why do I long to be held in honor?
- 31:50Speaker 1: Is it not for naught? This also is utterly vain,
- 31:56Speaker 1: verily vain. Glory is an evil plague, the greatest of vanities,
- 32:01Speaker 1: because it draweth us away from the true glory and
- 32:05Speaker 1: robeth us of heavenly grace. For whilst a man pleaseth himself,
- 32:12Speaker 1: he displeaseth thee. Whilst he gapeth after the praises of man,
- 32:18Speaker 1: he is deprived of true virtues. But true glory and
- 32:24Speaker 1: wholy rejoicing lieth in glorying in THEE, and not in self,
- 32:31Speaker 1: in rejoicing in Thy name, not in our own virtue,
- 32:36Speaker 1: in not taking delight in any creature, save only for
- 32:40Speaker 1: Thy sake. Let thy name, not mine be praised, Let
- 32:47Speaker 1: thy work not mine be magnified, Let Thy holy name
- 32:52Speaker 1: be blessed. But to me, Let nought be given of
- 32:57Speaker 1: the praises of men. Thou art my glory, Thou art
- 33:01Speaker 1: the joy of my heart. In THEE will I make
- 33:05Speaker 1: my boast and be glad all the day long. But
- 33:09Speaker 1: for myself, let me not glory save only in my
- 33:13Speaker 1: infirmities two Corinthians twelve, verse five. Let the Jews seek
- 33:22Speaker 1: the honor which cometh from one another, but I will
- 33:25Speaker 1: ask for that which cometh from God only. John five,
- 33:31Speaker 1: verse forty four. Truly, all human glory, all temporal honor,
- 33:38Speaker 1: all worldly exaltation, compared to Thy eternal glory, is but
- 33:43Speaker 1: vanity and folly. O God, my truth and my mercy,
- 33:49Speaker 1: blessed Trinity. To THEE alone, be all praise, honor, power,
- 33:56Speaker 1: and glory, forever and ever, ah meen. End of Chapter
