- 0:00Speaker 1: Set out to the Ramos Law hotline. Car accident you
- 0:02Speaker 1: need Ramos Law, medical doctor and attorney ramas Law dot com.
- 0:04Speaker 1: We are joined as we are every Thursday by Jeff
- 0:07Speaker 1: Lakewall to ESPN dot com. First of all, Leggy, we'll
- 0:10Speaker 1: ask you about some things in the press conference. What
- 0:12Speaker 1: I would like to know is, did Vic sound good?
- 0:16Speaker 2: Oh? Yeah, we we love the Vic Lombardi interlude?
- 0:21Speaker 3: What did he say? What happened?
- 0:23Speaker 2: Somebody threw a horrible interception against Notre Dave Hour.
- 0:31Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, that's awesome.
- 0:34Speaker 2: Yeah, in the middle of nowhere.
- 0:36Speaker 3: Oh my god.
- 0:37Speaker 4: And what did George Peyton say upon hearing that very
- 0:40Speaker 4: very lucid observation.
- 0:44Speaker 2: I think he just paused and moved on.
- 0:48Speaker 4: Which is why we didn't draft Drewell.
- 0:51Speaker 1: Yes, exactly right, Leggy.
- 0:53Speaker 2: So horrible interception. It's also I'm trying to get information
- 1:04Speaker 2: for people. I'm trying to do things that I get
- 1:07Speaker 2: bunch of horrible and I mean.
- 1:09Speaker 3: We think it's funny. But if we apologize to the
- 1:11Speaker 3: Denver Broncos and Jeff leg Wall yet guys happen? Nelly,
- 1:14Speaker 3: have you apologized? You? Wait, I know what happened?
- 1:16Speaker 1: What Leggy's pissed that Vic intruded on Leggy's virtual bubble.
- 1:23Speaker 4: No longer the camp bubble, it's the virtual bubble.
- 1:25Speaker 1: He's now intruder on.
- 1:27Speaker 2: Well, it ain't the first time. I gotta be out
- 1:29Speaker 2: of it.
- 1:30Speaker 4: Yeah, blame blame Steve Nelson. He couldn't figure it out,
- 1:33Speaker 4: So my bad.
- 1:34Speaker 2: Uh, Legy.
- 1:35Speaker 1: We were talking about some things this morning regarding the Broncos.
- 1:38Speaker 1: I mean, it was right around the corner of the
- 1:39Speaker 1: beginning of the season. One of them is Vic just
- 1:43Speaker 1: asked the question, if you had to predict it right now,
- 1:45Speaker 1: the leading rusher rushing yards, is it Dobbins or is
- 1:48Speaker 1: it Harvey?
- 1:50Speaker 2: Uh, I guess I would praise it. I think they
- 1:53Speaker 2: want it to be Harvey, honestly, and I think they'd
- 1:56Speaker 2: like Dobbins to be that third down guy, you know.
- 2:01Speaker 2: But we'll see how it plays out. You know, if
- 2:05Speaker 2: Harvey doesn't have the I think they're going to be
- 2:09Speaker 2: have the quick hook for everybody. If it's not going
- 2:12Speaker 2: well there, you know, somebody else is going to get
- 2:14Speaker 2: the ball. I think is how it's going to go
- 2:16Speaker 2: this year. And I think if you play fantasy football
- 2:19Speaker 2: and so you've got a few games of information I
- 2:23Speaker 2: think the Broncos will be a frustrating operation in the
- 2:26Speaker 2: end game.
- 2:27Speaker 4: Jeffrey, Are the reports true that other teams asked Sam
- 2:31Speaker 4: Ellener to go join the active squads of those teams
- 2:35Speaker 4: And if that's true, how in the heck did that
- 2:37Speaker 4: Broncos manage to keep them?
- 2:40Speaker 2: Yeah? I think I was able to confirm. Really multiple
- 2:47Speaker 2: people said there were at least one and that they
- 2:50Speaker 2: believed there were two teams that had You know, now,
- 2:54Speaker 2: what is the interest quote unquote interest Is that yes,
- 2:58Speaker 2: we're going to sign you to the fifty three or
- 3:02Speaker 2: you're under consideration for our fifty three. I mean, I think,
- 3:06Speaker 2: you know, it's just it's always semantics this time of year.
- 3:10Speaker 2: You know, somebody's representative is going to say, oh, yeah,
- 3:13Speaker 2: there's twelve teams interested in them, and you'll talk to
- 3:17Speaker 2: somebody in the league in personnel and they'll be like, heay,
- 3:19Speaker 2: you know, maybe one or two. But I was able
- 3:21Speaker 2: to confirm at least one team, and I was told
- 3:26Speaker 2: there was another, So I think there was a possibility
- 3:30Speaker 2: for him to be a number three on somebody else's roster.
- 3:34Speaker 2: But you can keep them because now if you're a
- 3:39Speaker 2: veteran player with probably four or more years of experience
- 3:46Speaker 2: and under eight years of experience. That's four to eight
- 3:50Speaker 2: year window the veteran minimum salary. You can get it
- 3:55Speaker 2: pretty close with what you can make on the practice
- 3:57Speaker 2: squad now if you're lated once or twice during the season.
- 4:02Speaker 2: So maybe they've got some kind of subtle agreement that
- 4:07Speaker 2: he will be elevated at some point during the year.
- 4:10Speaker 2: But I think this is the power of Davis Webb
- 4:14Speaker 2: as the Broncos quarterback coach. I mean, Zach Wilson turned
- 4:18Speaker 2: in sort of one year of quarterback rehab at the
- 4:21Speaker 2: Broncos with Davis Webb and Sean Payton into a six
- 4:25Speaker 2: million dollars deal with the Dolphins. So I think I
- 4:29Speaker 2: think players see this as a place and the team's
- 4:32Speaker 2: going to be good. You know, if you end up
- 4:34Speaker 2: on a fifty three, your opportunities are probably on deeps
- 4:38Speaker 2: that aren't as good. So you're you're basically choosing the
- 4:43Speaker 2: potential for a playoffs share and your ability to be
- 4:48Speaker 2: coached how you want to be coached.
- 4:50Speaker 3: That's my boy, Zach's my boy will be as well.
- 4:53Speaker 1: Hey, Jeff, I let mead a term quarterback rehab by
- 4:55Speaker 1: the way.
- 4:55Speaker 3: Yeah, quarterback rehab. Well, I mean we've seen guys go
- 4:58Speaker 3: through it, right, Baker Mayfield's a perfect example. Hey, although
- 5:00Speaker 3: he was already really good before that. Hey, Jeff, we've
- 5:03Speaker 3: been talking about this this morning. I mean, everybody seemingly
- 5:06Speaker 3: is bullish on the Denver Broncos. You will not hear
- 5:09Speaker 3: a discouraging word from coast to coast. That being said,
- 5:13Speaker 3: what about the quarterback? Is he is he in a
- 5:16Speaker 3: position now to make a comeback on you? Is he
- 5:19Speaker 3: in a position to win a shootout against you? We
- 5:22Speaker 3: haven't seen that really in the way that we have
- 5:25Speaker 3: it in our mind. But do you think he's capable
- 5:27Speaker 3: or is this a proved thing?
- 5:30Speaker 2: It's always a proved thing, I think for the quarterback.
- 5:32Speaker 2: I think that's the sort of the unfairness or the
- 5:36Speaker 2: injustice of the position. As you're you never get you
- 5:40Speaker 2: never get out of the prove it zone if you're
- 5:43Speaker 2: an NFL quarterback or a team that has to playoffs aspiration. So,
- 5:48Speaker 2: uh yeah, I mean he's so. Nick is an important
- 5:50Speaker 2: part of whatever becomes of the Broncos this season. But
- 5:55Speaker 2: they I've told people, you know who I work with
- 6:00Speaker 2: and other folks who cover the league. Uh, let the
- 6:03Speaker 2: Broncos did what they said they were going to do,
- 6:05Speaker 2: and they've They've said Bo Nixon's development will be better
- 6:10Speaker 2: if we construct a better team around him, and they've
- 6:13Speaker 2: certainly done that if they stay healthy, so he has
- 6:18Speaker 2: every opportunity to be to improve and to make stride
- 6:25Speaker 2: and be in position to win a lot of games
- 6:27Speaker 2: because of the team he has around him. It's hard
- 6:29Speaker 2: for me to believe there are three defenses better than
- 6:33Speaker 2: this one if everyone stays on the field and plays.
- 6:37Speaker 2: So that alone gives bo nicks. But you know, at
- 6:42Speaker 2: least twenty eight other quarterbacks don't have in the league.
- 6:45Speaker 1: Uh being joined by Jeff Lagweld ESPN dot Com on
- 6:49Speaker 1: the Ramos Law Hotline, so Legy, one of the things
- 6:54Speaker 1: I wanted to mention Nick Benito, who is we just
- 6:58Speaker 1: heard or saw from the press conference with George Payton
- 7:01Speaker 1: before he's rudely interrupted by Vic, was talking about contract extensions.
- 7:04Speaker 1: They always keep things very very close and quiet, and
- 7:08Speaker 1: they're doing that now. There's one thing with Benito, though
- 7:11Speaker 1: they think is interesting. He only played sixty one percent
- 7:14Speaker 1: of the snaps last year and most of those pass
- 7:17Speaker 1: rushing downs. Do you think he can be an all
- 7:19Speaker 1: around type of player that plays like most of the
- 7:22Speaker 1: snaps or is this kind of who he is?
- 7:26Speaker 2: Oh? You know, I did the math on this, and
- 7:30Speaker 2: he didn't play that much less than your high end
- 7:33Speaker 2: edge rushers. Now his seven I think he played seven
- 7:36Speaker 2: h eight seven hundred and eight snaps last year. Yes, no,
- 7:39Speaker 2: that was the fewest among the top ten rushers, but
- 7:45Speaker 2: all of those guys were between seven hundred and nine
- 7:48Speaker 2: hundred snaps. So you're not talking about thousand snap players
- 7:53Speaker 2: like you would a corner, you know, or a safety.
- 7:57Speaker 2: You're not, that's not the position anymore. They want you
- 8:00Speaker 2: to have impact on those downs you play. So most teams,
- 8:04Speaker 2: you know, I think Watt was in was in the
- 8:07Speaker 2: eight hundred snap range. You know, I think a lot
- 8:10Speaker 2: of those upper tier pass rushers were in the eight
- 8:13Speaker 2: hundred and eight fifty snap range. So he's not much
- 8:17Speaker 2: below that, and I think they like that number for him.
- 8:22Speaker 2: You know. That said, he's fresh and impactful. Uh And
- 8:26Speaker 2: in theory this year, they'll have more rushdowns because if
- 8:30Speaker 2: you play better defense, second and long is a rushdown,
- 8:35Speaker 2: you know, it's not just third and long. So I
- 8:38Speaker 2: think he will have more opportunities to rush, But will
- 8:43Speaker 2: that mean more snaps overall that? You know, they may
- 8:46Speaker 2: not play as many snaps if they get a lot
- 8:49Speaker 2: of three and outs and all those things. So I
- 8:51Speaker 2: think it's more what you do with the snapch aer
- 8:54Speaker 2: on the field, and I don't think it impacts the
- 8:56Speaker 2: negotiations with them. I will say I and I put
- 9:00Speaker 2: it in a story a week or so ago. But
- 9:02Speaker 2: I talked to Nick, you know myself, and uh, he
- 9:05Speaker 2: believes a deal will get done and wants one to
- 9:09Speaker 2: get done. So I think they're making progress behind the scenes.
- 9:12Speaker 1: Quick trivia question for you, Leggy. Two players played ninety
- 9:16Speaker 1: eight point seventy three percent of the snaps available to them.
- 9:20Speaker 1: Bo Nix is one. Who's the other?
- 9:23Speaker 2: I gotta believe it's uh, it's not certain, surprisingly Zach.
- 9:30Speaker 1: Not sechut Quinn miners Quinn miners right, Yeah, Mos.
- 9:34Speaker 2: Always always an old lineman. You're a lot of the
- 9:37Speaker 2: old lineman. Will get one hundred percent by the end
- 9:39Speaker 2: of the year if it's going well.
- 9:41Speaker 4: Jeffery, what's going on with the punter? I mean, in
- 9:44Speaker 4: the words of Mark hard to.
- 9:46Speaker 3: Punt the ball.
- 9:48Speaker 2: It's a rookie, it's uh. It is interesting though that
- 9:52Speaker 2: the head coach is talking about structuring practice around putting
- 9:56Speaker 2: him in pressure situations to work on things. But I
- 10:00Speaker 2: think they fully understand and realize they're going to be
- 10:04Speaker 2: in a game this year and he may uncork one
- 10:06Speaker 2: of those, you know, inconsistent ones they've seen in practice.
- 10:10Speaker 2: But uh, I will say, I mean, you know, I
- 10:14Speaker 2: usually don't am not one to shoot off the competiti
- 10:17Speaker 2: candidates for punters, but when he hits it right, I'm
- 10:21Speaker 2: not sure I've ever seen a guy be able to
- 10:23Speaker 2: pound it like that, So.
- 10:24Speaker 4: Really, okay, he needs to hit it right though, hold on.
- 10:30Speaker 2: Yeah. Sean Payton's theory is that it's usually the first punt,
- 10:37Speaker 2: so they they're trying to figure out how to address
- 10:41Speaker 2: that in practice, and Seawn even said they may just
- 10:45Speaker 2: stop it practice at some points and just give him
- 10:48Speaker 2: a surprise punt.
- 10:49Speaker 3: I was trying to Oh sorry, Jeff, I was. I
- 10:52Speaker 3: was trying to find Australian slang for awesome while you
- 10:56Speaker 3: were talking. I came up with bunza. Well, how do
- 11:00Speaker 3: you give me enough? I don't know, but it's a
- 11:02Speaker 3: bonza like killing cork, one of those two. So I
- 11:05Speaker 3: guess my question to you is once we get through
- 11:07Speaker 3: week one and week two and whatnot, if it's still
- 11:09Speaker 3: kind of going the same way, do you think they
- 11:10Speaker 3: would bring somebody in just to try him out and
- 11:14Speaker 3: to say to the kid, Hey, we love you, but
- 11:16Speaker 3: you gotta settle down. I mean, what do you think.
- 11:20Speaker 2: You know? I certainly think that is not above I
- 11:25Speaker 2: personally believe Sean Pate would do anything if he thought
- 11:28Speaker 2: it was necessary to win games during the season. So
- 11:31Speaker 2: I don't think anybody gets the total free pass, you know,
- 11:35Speaker 2: except maybe Sir can.
- 11:39Speaker 1: Sure, uh Jeff Legwell with a ESPN diicnt Leggy. Sean
- 11:44Speaker 1: Payton said he's not worried about Marvin MIM's growing injury
- 11:48Speaker 1: from practice yesterday. I am should I not be well?
- 11:52Speaker 2: I don't know yet. I would would practice doesn't start
- 11:55Speaker 2: till ten fifteen today, but I wouldn't expect to see
- 11:58Speaker 2: him practice in today. But he didn't walk off, you know, fairly,
- 12:04Speaker 2: it was not like a noticeable limp when he walked
- 12:06Speaker 2: off the field yesterday.
- 12:07Speaker 3: Jeff, you, Jeff, you have a groin right.
- 12:11Speaker 2: As far as I know. Yes, okay, all right, I'll
- 12:14Speaker 2: just making.
- 12:17Speaker 4: So much to be said.
- 12:19Speaker 3: We were talking about that earlier. But because Groin's jeff
- 12:21Speaker 3: and less. The only the only fix is just to
- 12:24Speaker 3: sit around and wait for them to heal. You can't
- 12:26Speaker 3: do really anything right.
- 12:29Speaker 2: I'm sure they have some kind of rehab program for
- 12:31Speaker 2: those spas, but uh, I'm sorry. Every time we talk
- 12:35Speaker 2: about that kind of injury, I can only hear like
- 12:38Speaker 2: Shanahan at the end of the gathering with us one
- 12:43Speaker 2: day saying, oh, oh yeah, now Wilson's got a little groin.
- 12:50Speaker 2: So anytime we talk about that injury, that pops bake.
- 12:53Speaker 3: No.
- 12:53Speaker 2: I mean, it's like a hamstring. You know, you probably
- 12:57Speaker 2: don't know the severity. But they did an MRI. They
- 13:00Speaker 2: took him for an MRI and I was told the
- 13:03Speaker 2: results were not alarming or anything. So still a couple
- 13:08Speaker 2: of weeks until the game, basically, so I think he'll uh,
- 13:13Speaker 2: you know, if he's on the practice field next week
- 13:16Speaker 2: when they get it cranked up, I would think it's uh.
- 13:18Speaker 2: I think it's okay.
- 13:20Speaker 4: Last one for me.
- 13:21Speaker 3: Leggie.
- 13:21Speaker 4: Do you think after watching preseason, after seeing the new
- 13:24Speaker 4: running back room, do you think Champagne is going to
- 13:27Speaker 4: commit to the run game this year.
- 13:30Speaker 2: I wish I could offer you a promise for that,
- 13:33Speaker 2: but I think it's always the in the heat of
- 13:38Speaker 2: play calling. I think that's you know, I just saw
- 13:43Speaker 2: something the other day where showing a Cowboys, you know,
- 13:47Speaker 2: Super Bowl clip with EMMITTT. Smith getting the ball on
- 13:51Speaker 2: seven consecutive plays.
- 13:52Speaker 4: It was nice, Yeah, it was nice. I just I
- 13:55Speaker 4: just watched that episode nine straight plays where he carried.
- 13:59Speaker 2: The ball, and once I once saw a Kubiac and
- 14:03Speaker 2: I'm certain if I went back through my binders, i'd
- 14:07Speaker 2: find it with Mike too. But I once saw a
- 14:08Speaker 2: Kubiac to call like the same play like six times
- 14:13Speaker 2: in a row because they were just mashing somebody. But
- 14:17Speaker 2: I don't know that he you know, I don't think
- 14:20Speaker 2: you're ever going to get the you know, pounded out series.
- 14:24Speaker 2: I mean, I've gone back and looked at a lot
- 14:26Speaker 2: of his New Orleans tape and looked at a lot
- 14:30Speaker 2: of the offensive drives, and uh, you know, there are
- 14:34Speaker 2: moments in there when he does but I just don't
- 14:36Speaker 2: think that's in his DNA. I think he just like
- 14:39Speaker 2: it in his world. I think you would like it
- 14:42Speaker 2: to be impactful when he calls it. Because their issue
- 14:46Speaker 2: last year is by every metric, by all the advanced metrics,
- 14:51Speaker 2: they had the best run blocking line in the league,
- 14:54Speaker 2: yet they didn't run the ball very well. So that
- 14:57Speaker 2: puts it squarely on the running backs in his mind,
- 15:02Speaker 2: and probably for good reason. And where did we see
- 15:05Speaker 2: the most change on this roster when it went to
- 15:09Speaker 2: fifty three? Was that running back? You know, they let
- 15:12Speaker 2: Javonte Williams go cut, Blake Watson cut Odrick Estimate. That's
- 15:16Speaker 2: three of the running backs sent on their way, so
- 15:20Speaker 2: you can tell where they think the problem was.
- 15:23Speaker 1: Jeff LAKEWELLDESPN dot com. Last thing for you, Legi, We
- 15:25Speaker 1: were talking about this earlier. Rashi Rice being suspended the
- 15:28Speaker 1: first six games in Kansas City. It doesn't affect a
- 15:32Speaker 1: direct Broncos matchup that they have at some point this year,
- 15:35Speaker 1: but their first six games are against the Chargers in Brazil,
- 15:40Speaker 1: Philly at home, at the Giants, Baltimore at home, at Jacksonville,
- 15:45Speaker 1: and then Detroit at home. This is going to hurt him,
- 15:49Speaker 1: isn't it like having that stacked of opponents the first
- 15:51Speaker 1: six weeks without your number one? Why dout you hurt?
- 15:55Speaker 2: Yeah? I mean it's not awesome, certainly, but I tend
- 15:58Speaker 2: to As we saw with Peyton Manning over his career,
- 16:04Speaker 2: including his time here. I think the quarterback makes an
- 16:07Speaker 2: awful lot of other players good, so I don't think
- 16:11Speaker 2: they will have as hard a time adjusting as some
- 16:14Speaker 2: people would simply because of who has the ball most
- 16:17Speaker 2: of the time. And they've known this suspension has been
- 16:22Speaker 2: coming too, so they they they have spent months in
- 16:27Speaker 2: all of their meetings and game planning and schematics, They've
- 16:31Speaker 2: spent months knowing this was going to happen, so they
- 16:35Speaker 2: they probably have a lot of things in place to
- 16:39Speaker 2: deal with that because the league wanted eight games for
- 16:43Speaker 2: the suspension, and I think ultimately it's settled on sick.
- 16:47Speaker 3: We wish you a very happy and productive groin.
- 16:50Speaker 2: Day, as we all should have time.
- 16:55Speaker 1: Absolutely, thank you, Thanks so Jeff Lewell ESPN dot com
