- 0:00This is Ground Signal Deep Dive, Markets and
- 0:01Economy. I'm Tenet. Today is Wednesday, September
- 0:0423, 2026. We are two days into post -FOMC market
- 0:08reality, and the picture is mixed in ways that
- 0:10matter. Equities are mostly holding. Bonds are
- 0:14still pricing in residual pressure. Crypto has
- 0:17pulled back from its summer highs, but is behaving
- 0:19more like a macro hedge than a speculative asset
- 0:21right now. Gold is near record territory. And
- 0:24oil is in a range that keeps energy traders and
- 0:26central bankers equally nervous. Sit with the
- 0:29data. Let's work through what it means. Here
- 0:34is where we stand as of this morning's session.
- 0:37The S &P 500 sits at 7 ,764, essentially flat
- 0:43on the day, according to market data compiled
- 0:45for September 23, 2026. That level represents
- 0:48roughly 225 points of recovery since the mid
- 0:52-September drawdown that followed the FOMC hike
- 0:54announcement. The index hasn't broken out to
- 0:57new highs, but it hasn't collapsed either, and
- 0:59that equilibrium is the signal itself. The Nikkei
- 1:03225 in Tokyo is up 1 .38 % to 65 ,019. Japanese
- 1:08equities continue to benefit from a weaker yen,
- 1:11export tailwinds, and a Bank of Japan that only
- 1:14yesterday moved its complementary deposit facility
- 1:17rate to 1 .25%, effective September 24. That
- 1:22is the Bank of Japan continuing its slow -motion
- 1:25normalization while remaining far behind both
- 1:27the Fed and the ECB in the rate cycle. Japanese
- 1:31exporters love that dynamic. The Hang Seng in
- 1:34Hong Kong is down about 0 .8 % to 25 ,065, still
- 1:38weighed by property sector uncertainty and a
- 1:41broader recalibration of risk appetite for China
- 1:43-adjacent assets. The DAX in Frankfurt is essentially
- 1:47flat at 25 ,579. up a fraction after the ECB's
- 1:52own September 10th rate action gave European
- 1:54risk appetite a brief lift before markets re
- 1:57-anchored. VIX, the so -called fear gauge, is
- 2:00at 14 .87 as of the most recent daily close.
- 2:04That reading is low. Historically, a VIX below
- 2:0715 signals that options markets are not pricing
- 2:10significant near -term disruption. It means this
- 2:13relative calm isn't just a feeling. It is, for
- 2:16now, quantified complacency. The question the
- 2:18next 72 hours will answer is whether that complacency
- 2:21is justified. Signal level for equities overall.
- 2:24Signal 2. Developing. Indices are holding post
- 2:28-hike but haven't confirmed direction. Earnings
- 2:31and economic data in the next two weeks will
- 2:33determine whether this is a genuine consolidation
- 2:35or a delayed reckoning. Looking at sector dynamics,
- 2:39technology continues to lead on earnings merit.
- 2:42According to S &P Global Market Intelligence,
- 2:45AI and cloud infrastructure revenues are driving
- 2:47year -over -year earnings growth in the information
- 2:50technology sector, with Q2 2026 results described
- 2:53as a strong beat cycle. The market is not rewarding
- 2:56speculation in tech right now. It is rewarding
- 2:59companies that are converting AI spend into measurable
- 3:02revenue. The flip side, rate -sensitive names
- 3:06are still lagging. CrowdStrike, ServiceNow, Oracle.
- 3:11And cadence design systems were cited as rate
- 3:13-sensitive decliners in early September. That's
- 3:16not a death sentence. Those businesses are sound.
- 3:19But in a 3 .75 to 4 % rate environment, their
- 3:22discounted cash flow math gets tighter. And institutional
- 3:26money is disciplined about that math. Energy
- 3:29is the strongest sector rotation candidate. With
- 3:31Brent holding near $100 a barrel, energy names
- 3:34have pricing power and cash flow visibility that
- 3:36other sectors envy. Marathon Petroleum appeared
- 3:39as a notable mover in recent sessions. Watch
- 3:42energy as a defensive rotation trade if the broader
- 3:44tape softens. Sector rotation assessment, signal
- 3:48two. No clean regime shift, but the bias is clear.
- 3:51Own cash flow visibility, reduce duration exposure,
- 3:54watch energy. AI infrastructure remains the structural
- 3:58anchor. This is where the real story of the past
- 4:01week lives. The Federal Reserve on September
- 4:0316th raised the federal funds target range by
- 4:0625 basis points. to 3 .75 to 4%. That is confirmed
- 4:11directly from the Fed's own press release. It
- 4:14is the most consequential policy decision of
- 4:16the third quarter. The Fed's dot plot, which
- 4:19maps where individual committee members expect
- 4:21rates to go, showed a 2027 median projection
- 4:24at 3 .6%. That is the clearest pivot signal the
- 4:30Fed has communicated in this cycle. It says,
- 4:33we think we may be close to the top. but we're
- 4:35not done yet. And we want you to know relief
- 4:37is on the other side of this. Markets heard it.
- 4:40The 10 -year Treasury yield, which had been flirting
- 4:43with 5%, is now in a range between 4 .43 % and
- 4:474 .97%, depending on the session and data source.
- 4:51The U .S. Treasury's published daily rates for
- 4:54September 18 showed the 10 -year par yield at
- 4:574 .43%. A separate market analysis source put
- 5:01the September 23 reading closer to 4 .97%. For
- 5:05context, even the lower end of that range is
- 5:08historically high and continues to put pressure
- 5:11on refinancing, mortgage rates, and the valuation
- 5:14of long -duration assets. The yield curve remains
- 5:17inverted. According to Federal Reserve economic
- 5:20data from the St. Louis Fed, the two -year Treasury
- 5:24yield is running above the 10 -year by approximately
- 5:2712 basis points as of September 21. That inversion
- 5:31has now persisted long enough to be a structural
- 5:34concern, not a curiosity. Historically, curve
- 5:38inversions of this duration have preceded slowdowns
- 5:41in credit growth and economic activity. We are
- 5:44not yet seeing that data inflect, but the signal
- 5:46is there, and it should not be dismissed. The
- 5:49ECB acted on September 10th, raising its deposit
- 5:52facility rate to 2 .5 % and its marginal lending
- 5:55facility to 2 .9%, effective September 16th,
- 5:59confirmed by the European Central Bank's official
- 6:01press release. European inflation has been more
- 6:04stubborn than models predicted, and the ECB is
- 6:06working through the same credibility calculus
- 6:08as the Fed. Do enough to anchor expectations,
- 6:11but don't tip a fragile eurozone economy into
- 6:14recession. The Bank of Japan, as mentioned, adjusted
- 6:17its complementary deposit rate to 1 .25 % effective
- 6:21tomorrow. The BOJ remains the outlier in global
- 6:24policy, still accommodative by any global standard.
- 6:27still propping up a carry trade that funds significant
- 6:30positioning across emerging markets. Any sharp
- 6:33BOJ pivot remains the single most important tail
- 6:36risk in global fixed income. Fixed income signal
- 6:38level, signal three, material. The 10, year yield
- 6:42range is wide, the curve inversion is persistent,
- 6:45and three of the world's most important central
- 6:47banks have all acted in the last two weeks. The
- 6:50environment is not a crisis, but it demands active
- 6:53management. The dollar is holding firm against
- 6:57most major and emerging market currencies, consistent
- 6:59with higher U .S. rates and a risk environment
- 7:02that still favors dollar -denominated safety.
- 7:04Here is the Nomad FX snapshot for September 23,
- 7:082026, compiled from currency market data across
- 7:11multiple sources. USD to Philippine peso, 62
- 7:15.54 pesos per dollar. USD to Indonesian rupiah,
- 7:1917 ,802 rupiah. USD to Thai baht. 33 .10 baht.
- 7:25USD to Malaysian ringgit, 4 .18 ringgit. USD
- 7:29to Peruvian sol, 3 .36 sols. USD to Brazilian
- 7:33real, 5 .10 reas. For globally mobile listeners
- 7:37using dollars, purchasing power in Southeast
- 7:39Asia and Latin America remains favorable relative
- 7:43to historical norms. The baht is slightly stronger
- 7:46than its September lows, consistent with Thailand's
- 7:48continued tourism -led inflows. The ringgit at
- 7:514 .18 reflects a modest improvement from early
- 7:54month levels, though Malaysia's ongoing digital
- 7:56nomad visa backlog is dampening some inbound
- 7:59enthusiasm. The broader emerging market picture,
- 8:02according to Reuters via market screener, dollar
- 8:05strength and elevated U .S. yields are creating
- 8:07bearish pressure on Asian emerging market currencies
- 8:10generally. The key watch, high beta emerging
- 8:13market currencies, particularly those with current
- 8:16account deficits or commodity import dependence,
- 8:18face the most downside if U .S. yields remain
- 8:20elevated and energy prices stay near current
- 8:23levels. The stress is not uniform. Brazil, for
- 8:26instance, is running a current account that has
- 8:28stabilized, but the directional pressure from
- 8:31U .S. rate differentials is real. FX signal level,
- 8:34signal 2, developing. The dollar is firm, emerging
- 8:38market stress is asymmetric, and the nomad FX
- 8:41basket remains favorable. Watch the rupiah and
- 8:45ring it if Brent breaks above 105 again. Bitcoin
- 8:49is at $85 ,877 as of today's market data. Ethereum
- 8:54is at $2 ,733. Solana is at $117 .35. All three
- 9:02are modestly lower than the prior session close,
- 9:05reflecting a mild risk off lean across the crypto
- 9:07complex. The more interesting data is the macro
- 9:11correlation shift. According to Glassnode's week
- 9:13on chain analysis from week 37, on -chain inflows
- 9:16and ETF flows have stalled. But the same period
- 9:19saw Bitcoin's 90 -day correlation with gold hit
- 9:21a record high while its correlation with the
- 9:23Nasdaq turned negative. Read that carefully.
- 9:26Bitcoin is, at this moment, trading more like
- 9:29a hard asset hedge and less like a high beta
- 9:32tech proxy. That is a significant shift from
- 9:35the 2021 to 2024 framework that many macro investors
- 9:39still operate with. U .S. bought Bitcoin ETF
- 9:42flows from Farside Data showed a net $174 .6
- 9:46million single -day inflow on September 4th.
- 9:49Daily swings of that magnitude confirm that institutional
- 9:51ETF demand remains a real and active factor in
- 9:55short -term price dynamics. This is not retail
- 9:57speculation driving the tape. The Senate's failure
- 10:01to advance the Clarity Act, the crypto regulatory
- 10:03framework bill that was blocked 49 to 50 in prior
- 10:05coverage, continues to create policy uncertainty
- 10:08for U .S. domiciled crypto businesses. Markets
- 10:12have largely priced in continued ambiguity, but
- 10:14any legislative development in either direction
- 10:17would move this rapidly. Crypto signal level,
- 10:20signal two. Developing. The gold correlation
- 10:23is a genuine new signal. ETF flows are real but
- 10:26choppy. Regulatory clarity remains the unlock
- 10:29that doesn't have a timeline. Brent crude is
- 10:32trading in the $98 to $99 range as of today's
- 10:36data. Multiple sources put the September 23rd
- 10:38quote between $98 .14 and $99 .07 per barrel.
- 10:44For context, this is a meaningful moderation
- 10:46from the Hormuz -driven spike above 105 that
- 10:49characterized the prior two episodes. The IRGC
- 10:53escalation warning issued at UNGA, as covered
- 10:56in yesterday's active alert at Signal 5, remains
- 10:59unresolved. Markets are pricing continued tension,
- 11:02but not a full blockage event. Any escalation
- 11:05to physical interdiction of straight traffic
- 11:06would immediately send Brent above 110. The range
- 11:10between 95 and 105 is where the market is telling
- 11:13you it sees probability mass. Gold is at approximately
- 11:17$4 ,321 to $4 ,383 per ounce, with the spread
- 11:22between sources reflecting intraday moves. That
- 11:25range, at any point in history, would be a record.
- 11:28We are living in record gold territory. The drivers
- 11:31are well documented. Central bank accumulation,
- 11:34dollar hedging, geopolitical uncertainty, and
- 11:37increasingly the convergence of retail and institutional
- 11:40demand through accessible ETF vehicles. The correlation
- 11:44with Bitcoin mentioned in the crypto segment
- 11:46reinforces that flight to hard assets narrative.
- 11:50Both are catching the same macro bid. Commodities,
- 11:53signal level, signal three. Brent range is stable,
- 11:57but geopolitically contingent. Gold at record
- 12:00levels is a continuous signal. It is the market
- 12:03saying something that other assets haven't fully
- 12:05priced. For Nomads and Globally Mobile listeners,
- 12:09three updates this week. Thailand's destination,
- 12:12Thailand Visa, a five -year, multiple -entry
- 12:14visa designed for long -stay tourism and vacation
- 12:17travelers, has a new documentation requirement
- 12:19that took effect August 31, 2026, per the Thai
- 12:23Ministry of Foreign Affairs. If you applied before
- 12:26that date or are planning to apply, verify your
- 12:28document set against the current requirements.
- 12:31the DTV itself remains active. Thailand also
- 12:34revoked its automatic 60 -day visa exemption
- 12:37for certain nationalities as of September 15th.
- 12:40This is separate from the DT5 and affects travelers
- 12:43who previously relied on visa -exempt entry for
- 12:46extended stays. If your strategy was stacking
- 12:48exemptions, that runway has closed. The DTV is
- 12:52now the cleaner long -term path. Malaysia's DE
- 12:55Rantau Digital Nomad program remains in a backlog
- 12:58situation. The Ministry of Digital confirmed
- 13:00in April 2026 that application processing delays
- 13:03are ongoing, with the updated module implementation
- 13:06now pushed to end of Q1 2027. This is a signal,
- 13:10too. The program is alive, but the operational
- 13:13friction is real. If Malaysia is your target
- 13:16and you're on a timeline, plan for delays. The
- 13:19Philippines. President Marcos signed Executive
- 13:22Order 86 in April 2025, authorizing the Department
- 13:25of Foreign Affairs to issue digital nomad visas
- 13:28to remote workers whose clients or employers
- 13:30are outside the Philippines. Implementation details
- 13:33remain the outstanding question. Watch DFA announcements
- 13:36for the operational rollout. On the DV lottery,
- 13:39the U .S. Diversity Visa Program for DV -2027
- 13:42has its application period running through September
- 13:4430, 2027. If you are eligible and haven't entered,
- 13:49the window is open at dprogram, state, gov. Mobility
- 13:53signal level, signal 2. The Thailand DTVI remains
- 13:57the strongest active instrument. Malaysia backlog
- 13:59is real. Philippines digital nomad visa is framework
- 14:03live but operationally pending. Three developments
- 14:06to watch over the next 24 to 72 hours. First,
- 14:10U .S. September jobs report dropping Friday,
- 14:13October 2nd. at 8 .30 a .m. Eastern. This is
- 14:17the most important single data point between
- 14:19now and the October 27th FOMC meeting. A print
- 14:23above 180 ,000 payrolls with unemployment stable
- 14:26or declining will reprice another hike. A miss
- 14:30below 130 ,000 will immediately push rate cut
- 14:32expectations forward. The spread between those
- 14:35two scenarios is wide, and markets are not priced
- 14:38for the downside case. Signal level, signal four.
- 14:41Watch it. Second, September CPI releasing Wednesday,
- 14:45October 14th. With Brent in the $98 to $99 range,
- 14:49energy is no longer a disinflationary tailwind.
- 14:52It's a neutral at best and potentially inflationary
- 14:55again if crude moves higher before the October
- 14:5714th data snapshot period closes. A CPI above
- 15:013 .1 % year over year will make the October 27th
- 15:04FOMC meeting very live. Signal level, signal
- 15:08three. Track energy prices between now and then
- 15:11as a leading indicator. Third, Hormuz geopolitical
- 15:15status. The IRGC escalation warning issued at
- 15:18UNGA, as covered in yesterday's active alert
- 15:20at Signal 5, remains unresolved. Markets are
- 15:23pricing continued tension, but not a full blockage
- 15:26event. Any escalation to physical interdiction
- 15:29of straight traffic would immediately send Brent
- 15:31above 110 and trigger a risk -off cascade across
- 15:34equities, emerging market currencies. and potentially
- 15:37force an emergency central bank response framework
- 15:40conversation. Signal level, signal four. This
- 15:44is not a background variable. It is an active
- 15:47watch. That's the full picture for September
- 15:5023rd, 2026. The Fed has hiked to 4%. The curve
- 15:54is inverted. Gold is at records. Bitcoin is tracking
- 15:57hard assets. Brent is in a range, but geopolitics
- 16:00holds the pin. And three data points, jobs, CPI,
- 16:03and the Strait of Hormuz are going to reshape
- 16:06everything between now and the end of October.
- 16:08Stay calibrated. This is Ground Signal Deep Dive,
- 16:11Markets and Economy. I'm Tenet. Signal out.
