- 0:00Speaker 1: And there came two angels to Sodom at even, and
- 0:03Speaker 1: Lot sat in the gate of Sodom. And Lot, seeing them,
- 0:07Speaker 1: rose up to meet them, and he bowed himself with
- 0:10Speaker 1: his face toward the ground. Genesis 19.1 Dear Heavenly Father,
- 0:17Speaker 1: Today I am making the conscious decision to not allow
- 0:20Speaker 1: fear to be the driving force behind my decisions. I
- 0:25Speaker 1: will not take matters into my own hands to preserve
- 0:28Speaker 1: my promised destiny. Instead, I will choose to trust in
- 0:33Speaker 1: your process and timeline to bring all that you've promised
- 0:38Speaker 1: into fruition. Lord, when I find myself in the cave
- 0:43Speaker 1: of confusion, I will reflect on your faithfulness and consistency
- 0:48Speaker 1: throughout my life. I confess that I will not make
- 0:52Speaker 1: the same mistakes as Lot and his daughters by allowing
- 0:56Speaker 1: the sinful nature of this world to corrupt my mind.
- 0:59Speaker 1: and derail my relationship with you, God. I declare that
- 1:04Speaker 1: I am the righteousness of God, unmovable and unshakable. My
- 1:10Speaker 1: mind is clear, my heart is aligned, and my feet
- 1:15Speaker 1: are standing on the solid rock of your word. In Jesus' name, amen.
- 1:25Speaker 1: Thanks for making prayer a priority in your life. To

- 1:42Speaker 2: Lot and his daughters. Previously, we had learned about God's
- 1:47Speaker 2: judgment on the land of Sodom and Gomorrah. The darkness
- 1:50Speaker 2: that plagued their hearts bled into the city like a river.
- 1:54Speaker 2: Their wickedness knew no limits, and God decided to destroy them.
- 2:00Speaker 2: He showed mercy on Lot and his family, yet Lot's
- 2:03Speaker 2: wife and son-in-laws were destroyed. Now we peer into the
- 2:08Speaker 2: sickness of Lot's family, and although Sodom and Gomorrah had
- 2:12Speaker 2: been destroyed, it still left its mark on Lot's bloodline.
- 2:17Speaker 2: Inspired by the book of Genesis.
- 2:21Speaker 3: Hello, I'm Jack Graham with today's episode of the Bible

- 2:52Speaker 3: slash stress. Today we're going to see what happens to
- 2:56Speaker 3: Lot and his daughters in the aftermath of the destruction
- 2:59Speaker 3: of Sodom and Gomorrah. God in his mercy had spared
- 3:03Speaker 3: Lot and his family. But as you'll recall from our
- 3:06Speaker 3: previous passage, Lot's wife was unable to pull her eyes
- 3:10Speaker 3: away from the evil of Sodom and was turned into
- 3:14Speaker 3: a pillar of salt. Lot and his daughters now have
- 3:18Speaker 3: a chance for a brand new start. But as we'll see,
- 3:21Speaker 3: the sin of Sodom and the darkness that's all around
- 3:24Speaker 3: them will have a profound effect on their future. The
- 3:28Speaker 3: opening scene is one that few among us can imagine.
- 3:31Speaker 3: Burning cities consumed by God's wrath are raining down ash
- 3:36Speaker 3: and heat all over the region as Lot escapes with
- 3:39Speaker 3: his daughters. It must have been, of course it was, terrifying, traumatic.
- 3:47Speaker 3: And out of this terror and trauma will arise a
- 3:49Speaker 3: story of deceit, carelessness, and corruption of God's design for families.
- 3:55Speaker 3: As you listen, notice what motivates the actions of each
- 3:59Speaker 3: person in the story. Notice how Lot, though he is
- 4:03Speaker 3: not the primary bad actor in this account, is not
- 4:07Speaker 3: without fault. The passage is one that will rightfully make
- 4:11Speaker 3: us very uncomfortable with its theme. So get ready. But
- 4:15Speaker 3: don't allow the shocking nature of the story to keep
- 4:18Speaker 3: you from seeing the lesson that is in it. A
- 4:20Speaker 3: lesson about what fear and a lack of watchfulness can
- 4:24Speaker 3: lead to in our own lives. Now, let's listen in
- 4:27Speaker 3: to the reading of today's passage.
- 4:32Speaker 2: Darkness covered the skies and ash fell like snow across
- 4:37Speaker 2: the surrounding land of Zohar. Faint screams could be heard
- 4:41Speaker 2: from the distance. and fire illuminated the horizon like a sunset.
- 4:46Speaker 2: Lot had fled to the mountains above Zoar with his
- 4:49Speaker 2: two daughters. There they found refuge in a cave and
- 4:53Speaker 2: hid away until they believed it safe to return. Exhaustion
- 4:58Speaker 2: and hysteria marked their lives for days, and the minds
- 5:01Speaker 2: of Lot and his daughters began to wander into darkness.
- 5:06Speaker 2: In madness, the three of them dwelt, and fear began
- 5:09Speaker 2: to be the driving force of all their decisions. One day,
- 5:14Speaker 2: while Lot was away from the cave, the older daughter
- 5:17Speaker 2: said to the younger daughter, We have lost everything, and
- 5:20Speaker 2: our father is old. There is no man here to
- 5:23Speaker 2: give us children, and we are missing out on the
- 5:26Speaker 2: customs of the whole earth. Her voice slithered with delirium
- 5:31Speaker 2: as she spoke. Let's get our father drunk and sleep
- 5:34Speaker 2: with him. so that we can preserve our family line.
- 5:38Speaker 2: So that night they filled their father. The three of
- 5:42Speaker 2: them laughed as the night drug on, and Lot drank
- 5:45Speaker 2: more and more, drowning his sorrows and losses with more wine.
- 5:50Speaker 2: The daughters tactfully drew Lot into a crapulous state, and
- 5:54Speaker 2: he was unable to discern reality from his drunken nightmares.
- 5:59Speaker 2: The older daughter drew him in close, and in their
- 6:02Speaker 2: cave of deception, the two slept together, Lot, completely unaware
- 6:07Speaker 2: of what he was doing, yet responsible for where he was,
- 6:11Speaker 2: had sex with his daughter. Lot awoke the next morning
- 6:16Speaker 2: ignorant of what had taken place. His daughter had left
- 6:19Speaker 2: in the night. The following evening, as the sun set
- 6:23Speaker 2: and Lot's inhibitions waned, he drank again with his daughters
- 6:27Speaker 2: and slept with the younger daughter. Though he may not
- 6:30Speaker 2: have been totally aware of what had happened... It was
- 6:33Speaker 2: him who had allowed the heart of Sodom to creep
- 6:36Speaker 2: into his daughters. It was him who showed cowardice in
- 6:39Speaker 2: the face of adversity. In the pit of darkness and paranoia,
- 6:45Speaker 2: two sons were conceived by Lot and his daughters. The
- 6:49Speaker 2: first was named Moab, and the second was named Benami.
- 6:54Speaker 2: These two men would build nations of their own, the
- 6:57Speaker 2: Moabites and the Ammonites. From the debased and crooked nature
- 7:02Speaker 2: from which they were conceived, the two men would build
- 7:05Speaker 2: cultures that would wage war against the people of God
- 7:09Speaker 2: for dozens of generations to come. Lot would be remembered
- 7:13Speaker 2: as righteous, not because he exemplified any sort of faithfulness
- 7:17Speaker 2: at all, but because God chose to save him.
- 7:24Speaker 3: Lot and his daughters have escaped by the skin of
- 7:27Speaker 3: their teeth. from the horrors that befell Sodom and Gomorrah,
- 7:30Speaker 3: their home. For his daughters, this had been the only
- 7:34Speaker 3: home they had known. Think for just a moment about
- 7:37Speaker 3: the implications of that statement. They grew up in sin
- 7:41Speaker 3: and debauchery and evil all around them. It had been
- 7:44Speaker 3: the status quo of this culture in which these two
- 7:47Speaker 3: young women had grown up. This is important context for
- 7:51Speaker 3: what happens in today's passage. But before we get to that,
- 7:55Speaker 3: Let's look at what Lot does to set the stage
- 7:58Speaker 3: for things. If you recall from our previous passage, Lot
- 8:02Speaker 3: had pleaded with the angels who told him to flee
- 8:04Speaker 3: to the mountains, to spare the city of Zohar so
- 8:07Speaker 3: he could settle there. The Lord granted his request and
- 8:12Speaker 3: did not destroy that city. How odd then that this
- 8:16Speaker 3: place Lot envisioned as a safe haven for him and
- 8:18Speaker 3: his family so quickly became a source of fear and danger.
- 8:23Speaker 3: Listen to what it says in Genesis 19.30. Lot went
- 8:28Speaker 3: up from Zoar and stayed in the mountains and his
- 8:31Speaker 3: two daughters with him, for he was afraid to stay
- 8:34Speaker 3: in Zoar, and he stayed in a cave, he and
- 8:37Speaker 3: his two daughters. At first, he told God he was
- 8:41Speaker 3: afraid to go to the mountains, and now, just a
- 8:44Speaker 3: few verses later, Lot is afraid to stay at Zoar,
- 8:47Speaker 3: so he flees to the mountains. It's worth noting what
- 8:51Speaker 3: is also absent from this story. Think back on the
- 8:54Speaker 3: examples of Noah and Abraham. When God spared their family
- 8:58Speaker 3: or gave them a victory, what was their response? Worship.
- 9:03Speaker 3: They worshiped God. Remembrance. Noah built an altar to the Lord.
- 9:07Speaker 3: Abraham built an altar to the Lord as well. What
- 9:11Speaker 3: does Lot do? Does he fall on his face with thanksgiving?
- 9:15Speaker 3: Does he build an altar of worship to remember how
- 9:17Speaker 3: God had worshiped him? Sadly, no. He and his daughters
- 9:21Speaker 3: take up residence in a cave isolated from the world. Now,
- 9:27Speaker 3: I do not believe this was God's intention when he
- 9:30Speaker 3: instructed Lot to flee to the mountains. Isolation and fear
- 9:34Speaker 3: are not a part of God's plan for us, and
- 9:36Speaker 3: we immediately see the effect that it has on Lot's daughters.
- 9:40Speaker 3: They begin to talk to each other about all they
- 9:43Speaker 3: are missing out on, namely sexual pleasure and the opportunity
- 9:47Speaker 3: to bear children. These desires are God-given and natural, But
- 9:52Speaker 3: the influence of sin in their hearts, twisted by the
- 9:56Speaker 3: cities of Sodom and Gomorrah in which they grew up,
- 9:59Speaker 3: these desires have taken over in a way that is
- 10:03Speaker 3: ruining their lives. They would get their father drunk and
- 10:07Speaker 3: have intimate relations with him. This is a perversion right
- 10:12Speaker 3: from the culture from which they were spared. We know
- 10:15Speaker 3: that they were virgins, never having been with a man,
- 10:18Speaker 3: from the account of the angels in Sodom and how
- 10:20Speaker 3: Lot offered his daughters to the wicked men. But just
- 10:24Speaker 3: because they were physically pure, it did not mean their
- 10:27Speaker 3: hearts were pure. And we see these wicked intentions now
- 10:31Speaker 3: turn to full-blown terrible sin. Lot is tricked into sleeping
- 10:36Speaker 3: with his daughters and getting each of them pregnant. However,
- 10:40Speaker 3: he is not innocent here. Once again, rather than being
- 10:43Speaker 3: the watchful leader of his family, He allows himself to
- 10:46Speaker 3: become drunk to the point of not knowing what he
- 10:49Speaker 3: was doing. There's a lesson in here for all of us,
- 10:53Speaker 3: a strident, stringent lesson. Earlier in Genesis, we heard as
- 10:58Speaker 3: God warned Cain that sin was crouching at the door.
- 11:01Speaker 3: And here we see what happens when we fail to
- 11:03Speaker 3: remain vigilant. Sin, like a lion, Satan, like a lion,
- 11:09Speaker 3: will pounce on us and overtake us if we do
- 11:12Speaker 3: not guard ourselves. Lot failed to remain watchful, and rather
- 11:16Speaker 3: than taking on the responsibility of fatherly leadership and helping
- 11:21Speaker 3: his daughters find husbands who could fulfill their God-given desires
- 11:25Speaker 3: for intimacy and motherhood, he became drunk and fathered a
- 11:29Speaker 3: son with each of them. These two boys would grow
- 11:33Speaker 3: up to be fathers of two nations that would be
- 11:36Speaker 3: at war with God's chosen people, the Israelite, for years
- 11:40Speaker 3: and years to come. What a story. What a terrible story.
- 11:45Speaker 3: And it all started with fear and failure to keep
- 11:48Speaker 3: an eye out for sin. Our Holy Father, we are
- 11:52Speaker 3: appreciative of this story today and what it teaches us
- 11:55Speaker 3: about our need to be vigilant for sin, sin of
- 11:59Speaker 3: all kinds, crouches at the door and will try to
- 12:02Speaker 3: enter by any means necessary. Lord, help us to trust
- 12:06Speaker 3: you and to believe in you and not listen to
- 12:09Speaker 3: our fears and to turn to Our fears to faith
- 12:13Speaker 3: and thanksgiving and adoration to you for your mercies and
- 12:16Speaker 3: your hand of protection in our lives is just what
- 12:20Speaker 3: we need. In Jesus' name, amen. Thank you for listening
- 12:25Speaker 3: to today's Bible in a Year podcast. Before we go,
