- 0:36Now, let's dive into today's quote.
- 0:39And you've probably heard this one or seen it floating around
- 0:43the Internet. Worrying does not take away
- 0:47tomorrow's troubles. It takes away today's piece.
- 0:53It's most often attributed to Randy Armstrong, a musician and
- 0:57poet. But that sentiment traces back
- 1:01to someone who said it even better, Doctor Leo Pescaglia,
- 1:07known as Doctor Love. He was a professor at the
- 1:11University of Southern California and one of the most
- 1:15watched speakers in PBS history. And he put it this way.
- 1:21Worry never robs tomorrow of its sorrow.
- 1:24It only saps today of its joy. Both versions say essentially
- 1:31the same thing. But notice what the Scaglia gets
- 1:35exactly right. Worry makes you a deal and then
- 1:40breaks it. The deal sounds like this.
- 1:43If I worry enough about tomorrow, maybe I can prevent
- 1:47the bad thing from happening. So you lie awake at 2:00 AM
- 1:52running through scenarios, catastrophizing.
- 1:57You rehearse the worst case scenario in your mind.
- 2:00You brace for impact. And what do you get in return?
- 2:06You don't get a better tomorrow. The sorrow, if it comes, comes
- 2:09anyway. Worry can be crippling.
- 2:14It causes us to lose sleep, lose our appetite, and paralyze our
- 2:18thoughts and actions, all while the future remains completely
- 2:22unchanged. So worry doesn't protect you
- 2:26from tomorrow, it just steals from today.
- 2:30But Scaglia spent his career arguing that social bonds and
- 2:35present moment living are essential to transcending
- 2:39everyday stress. He wasn't saying life has no
- 2:42sorrows. He was saying that trading your
- 2:45joy today for sorrow that may or may not come tomorrow is always
- 2:51a losing bargain. The troubles of tomorrow belong
- 2:55to tomorrow. Today's piece belongs to you
- 2:59right now, if you choose to keep it.
- 3:03I've given away entire weekends to worry, anxious about a
- 3:06meeting on Monday or a public speaking thing that I had to do
- 3:12coming up, or a decision I hadn't made yet, or a
- 3:14conversation I was dreading. And in almost every case, when
- 3:19the thing finally arrived, it was either fine or it was hard.
- 3:24But I handled it. The worry didn't help.
- 3:28It just meant I suffered twice, once in anticipation and once in
- 3:33reality. But Scaglio was right, the
- 3:39sorrow comes when it comes. The joy of today is only lost if
- 3:43I handed over early. So here's the question, what are
- 3:48you worrying about right now that belongs to tomorrow?
- 3:53Not today, because today has enough of its own.
- 3:57Don't spend its peace on a tomorrow that hasn't arrived yet
- 4:02and may never arrive the way you're imagining it.
- 4:06Keep today's joy. It's yours and you deserve it.
- 4:12That's it for today. I'm Andrew McGivern, signing off
- 4:15for now, but I'll be back tomorrow.
