- 0:18What's going on with the NIL transfer portal?
- 0:20Roster Caps. All those kind of good things,
- 0:22and there's some interesting feedback and tidbits from
- 0:25everyone who chose to sat down with us, so here.
- 0:28We are. The audio version of that you

- 0:40it again in 2025. We just keep rolling right
- 0:45along. This will be our first, excuse
- 0:49me, our first guest of the night that hasn't been a previous
- 0:53guest on the live tape. And you're you're a rookie here
- 0:56with this and so move up just a little bit for me just so you
- 1:00know, Twitter, the tweets, the people there want to see you
- 1:02there as well. Please start by introducing
- 1:05yourself. What did we did we first meet at
- 1:10the Olympic Training Center I. Believe.
- 1:14So I was doing the catalog. Yeah, hurdles.
- 1:17Yeah, yeah. That's right.
- 1:19Oh, man, Johnny Mac. Man, I love it.
- 1:21I love it. And now you're at.
- 1:23Really beautiful. Not that Chula Vista isn't, but
- 1:25man, High Point. Gorgeous.
- 1:27Gorgeous area, gorgeous campus. I love what's going on there.
- 1:30Wow. How long he's been there?
- 1:4120 years. I joined.
- 1:43Him nine and. 1/2 years. I was going to say, how long has
- 1:48it been for you? Has it really been almost 10
- 1:50years? Wow, yeah.
- 2:13Yeah. Is he an alum?
- 2:14Did he go to school there? I didn't know.
- 2:16I know him as High Point though. Oh, OK.
- 2:23All right, I I always think I, I associate him with high points.
- 2:26I wasn't sure. Yeah.
- 2:27All right, Scott. So you've been around a lot of
- 2:29great institutions all the way from Olympic training center to
- 2:32other schools, Power Four and all those kind of things.
- 2:35It's where we just keep shrinking from Power 5, Power 4.
- 2:37I don't know how that's going to end up.
- 2:40But today we're talking about the NCAA and all the changes
- 2:43that are occurring, NIL roster caps, the whole and there's just
- 2:47so many avenues to take it. What's your thoughts, feelings,
- 2:50What's what's going on in your brain with all this stuff?
- 3:00And we would have Syracuse and Colgate, both Division One
- 3:05teams, come to our. Place Wow.
- 3:07And we did that. Year after year and you never
- 3:15see that. No.
- 3:17Unheard of. Yeah.
- 3:22The direction that things have been going since I was in
- 3:25college, 44 years. Ago, yeah.
- 3:29I coached in Division 2IN in out West Northern Colorado and we
- 3:34were, you know, well hosted by New Mexico and the Air Force
- 3:37Academy and Idaho State and Colorado State and Colorado.
- 3:41And we had athletes that could help their athletes and we
- 3:44scored meets and, you know, we we didn't come close to beating
- 3:47them, but we beat them in some events.
- 3:49But the coaches kind of relish the competition.
- 3:52And now it seems. Like more money's gotten into
- 3:54things and there's more pressure on the the coaches of the
- 4:00programs that really have. Great resources and.
- 4:03Funding and recruiting ability and all that thing.
- 4:06And so they, they want to really, I think put an arm link
- 4:11to all those programs that could be a possible threat.
- 4:13So, so you see, I would say even less, but I mean, I don't know
- 4:17the last time I saw a triangular meet even happening, but you're
- 4:20saying even less of the McCall meets of the mixed D2 and
- 4:23they're trying. To limit the competition, you
- 4:28get into me, but maybe you don't get lames or maybe you don't get
- 4:32everybody on your. Team in there, right?
- 4:33You know, and the idea. I think is, you know, if I can
- 4:38get a person to my conference me to prepare them and that's
- 4:42really what I care about. Because to be more.
- 4:44Selfish and I think, you know, coaches in the past that have
- 4:48helped us to California school, Dave Murray to Arizona was
- 4:52great, really gracious right back in the day when I would
- 4:55take a team down to Tucson from Greeley, Co And I think that
- 5:01that stuff is is kind of gone by the wayside.
- 5:03Yeah. Looking at what's in for them a
- 5:06little bit. More right?
- 5:07Now that the money and football and all this thing, it's it's
- 5:10turned into even more of a competitive, maybe homogenized
- 5:15situation where they can we control the the good venues and
- 5:19the. Needs right?
- 5:20We can. Kind of keep people in that we
- 5:22want and. People out there, yeah.
- 5:23I don't necessarily think that the more pressure on the schools
- 5:28that are getting more resources a bad thing.
- 5:30I I think of the old spider man quote of, you know, the great
- 5:32power comes great responsibility.
- 5:33If we're going to spend invest money into you.
- 5:35Well, it's money and so we got to get things out.
- 5:37But there needs to be AI like that word you used homogeneous
- 5:40that that that it can't be that it needs to be more inclusive,
- 5:43if you will. That's one of the beauties of
- 5:45our sport. That's the most inclusive sport
- 5:46there is, right? Me when?
- 5:48I knew was coaching in Division two, you, you were first or
- 5:50second in the national championship at that division or
- 5:54in champion Division Three and had the standard to go to
- 5:57Division 1. You could advance on that ended
- 6:01I think in 1989 or 90. And so, you know, frankly, so we
- 6:06had our own championship, but it was always really good to see
- 6:09the underdogs get to compete against the big schools.
- 6:12But it was really nothing to gain for the big schools other
- 6:15than get embarrassed maybe. Right.
- 6:17You know. That was.
- 6:18Maybe a a downside, but I mean a lot of changes going on.
- 6:21I don't know if there's a lot of answers.
- 6:23I know the house settlement is supposed to be finalized April
- 6:28the 6th. Oh, is that right?
- 6:30I think. A lot.
- 6:30Of teams or conferences are sanitized to make decisions
- 6:34around March the 1st and in a place like this we don't have a
- 6:40lot of you know ticket resources.
- 6:41We have a smaller read and we're not on TV a lot for basketball.
- 6:45Basketball gain three extra scholarships, but to reduce the
- 6:50squads on other other things would be, you know, maybe a cut
- 6:53of pollution revenue. For, you know, school.
- 6:56Of our size, but we we continue to get more and more students
- 7:01every year there just because of.
- 7:04Yeah, right. And.
- 7:06So if athletes get reduced and they make up for that emissions
- 7:10by regular. Students, right?
- 7:12Which already has a lot of own its own pressures as far as
- 7:15college attendance in general because of costs.
- 7:17Yeah, I mean. You.
- 7:19Know when the coaches started there, there were 1200 students
- 7:23and now we're up to 6300. Students.
- 7:26Wow. Yeah.
- 7:26But you know, there's there's. A cost involved, I mean, I think
- 7:34the discount rate for our store is pretty low compared to some
- 7:37other stores. So it.
- 7:39Helps keep revenue coming in. That's how we.
- 7:41Yeah, yeah, there's. All kinds of stuff from the era
- 7:51of the tryout. May be difficult.
- 7:53Yeah, Yeah, that's a good. Point, yeah.
- 7:55They may, may hurt. Walk on statistics, if you will.
- 7:58Yeah. Yeah, yeah, there's always.
- 8:00Been a lot of walk on. Mm hmm.
- 8:05Yeah, right. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 8:25Makes sense? As Division 3 athlete and
- 8:30Division Two former coach, that those divisions are going to
- 8:35really see a. Big.
- 8:36Trickle. Yeah, you would think right
- 8:37even. The mid majors are going to see
- 8:39a trickle down from the major conferences, so there's going to
- 8:43be a shifting lanes. Change is the is the only
- 8:45constant. We're definitely having change.
- 8:46Yeah, Change has. Been changed.
- 8:53Before when we had 48 requirements when those, Yeah,
- 8:56yeah, that's right. Yeah, here we are.
- 8:58We're still prospering. Yep, Yep, Yep.
- 9:02Right. Yeah, in.
- 9:07The recruitment. Process I think a lot.
- 9:18Of high school coaches and parents and even student
- 9:26athletes themselves don't know what's going on and they're
- 9:29treating the recruitment like everywhere else and we've got to
- 9:32do a lot of. Education, yeah, for sure.
- 9:34Well, there's a lot of coaches that don't know what's going on.
- 9:36So how in the world is a parent of a 1718 year old kid supposed
- 9:39to know what's going on? That's.
- 9:41Something today slide on Instagram about border of
- 9:46recruiting. It's like people on my own team.
- 9:48This is your football based thing people on my.
- 9:51Own team, yeah, people in. The transfer.
- 9:53Yeah, you know, and. It went.
- 9:56Down the thing, right? High school kids were #6 yeah,
- 10:00well. We'll all find a way, that's for
- 10:02sure, Scott. So next year we'll be publishing
- 10:04this as well. So we're going to be able to
- 10:06check this answer here over the next year, 2025.
- 10:09What's your best prediction of something that's going on?
- 10:11It could be high point related, keep it track related of course,
- 10:14but what's what's your best prediction of something that's
- 10:15going to happen you? Know for a majority of the
- 10:19programs are going to opt in and try to get that.
- 10:21Money we we that's going to be interesting that it.
- 10:24Was going to be tied to participation in the NCAA
- 10:27basketball. Teams.
- 10:27That's last I heard, yeah. And but right now, the last
- 10:30thing our our compliance director from Sanchez said was
- 10:34initially that's not going to be the.
- 10:35Case OK, so you may see a. Lot of the schools that require
- 10:39on you know, for enrollment driven, you know to keep their
- 10:45bottom line. In the black.
- 10:47Yeah, I. Think you'll see maybe they have
- 10:49another year that maybe figure that.
- 10:51Out right and maybe. Down the road, I think that
- 10:53would be the case because as we. Well, no money is.
- 10:58Really. Drives everything it does, it
- 11:00does well, Scott, thank you so much, man.
- 11:01I appreciate your experience. You've got a lot of experience
- 11:04and you've done it and you've seen a lot of changes that we
- 11:06talked about. Freshmen couldn't compete,
- 11:07things like that. All of those things, by the way,
- 11:09women participate in sports. All of those things were
- 11:12supposed to ruin college athletics.
- 11:13And yet here we are stronger than ever.
- 11:15So, so we'll see how this impacts it as well.
- 11:19Thank you, Scott. Appreciate you, man.
- 11:20Thank you so much.
