Transcript
- 0:05Speaker 1: And welcome in. This is a public affairs program shedding
- 0:08Speaker 1: the light on the interest, issues and concerns of the
- 0:10Speaker 1: greater Pittsburgh area. Good morning. My name is Johnny hurt Well.
- 0:13Speaker 1: My in the studio guest Cindy Yates. Cindy's so good.
- 0:17Speaker 2: To see you. Good to be here, Johnny.
- 0:19Speaker 3: I am thrilled every year that you welcome me into
- 0:21Speaker 3: this beautiful place.
- 0:22Speaker 1: All right, Cindy is part of the Yates Fund for
- 0:25Speaker 1: the Cancer Hope Presents Cindy Stock twenty three, August twenty
- 0:29Speaker 1: first through the twenty second in Wetford, PA. Cindy Stock
- 0:32Speaker 1: twenty three. That blows my mind.
- 0:35Speaker 3: It blows mine two. I can't even believe I've been
- 0:37Speaker 3: doing it this many years. And my husband is like, yeah, sure,
- 0:40Speaker 3: invite two hundred and fifty strangers into the backyard.
- 0:42Speaker 2: Wow, that'll be fun.
- 0:44Speaker 1: And I have you in every year. And for some reason,
- 0:47Speaker 1: you look younger now than the when we first started talking.
- 0:51Speaker 2: How do you do that?
- 0:52Speaker 3: I went to Zuyoga this morning, so maybe I'm in Zenmo.
- 0:56Speaker 1: So so year twenty three, So obviously Cindy Stock is
- 1:00Speaker 1: you know, an homage to Woodstock. So I'm saying I'm predicting.
- 1:05Speaker 1: I'm thinking that maybe through all the you know, the
- 1:08Speaker 1: decades that you've been doing this, you've actually had more
- 1:11Speaker 1: people than at than the New York Concert.
- 1:15Speaker 3: Oh gosh, I would love to believe that true, But
- 1:18Speaker 3: we haven't quite hit one hundred, I mean, five hundred
- 1:21Speaker 3: thousand people, not yet.
- 1:22Speaker 4: Okay, all right, So trying for the people here maybe
- 1:25Speaker 4: so for the people who who've supported Cindy Stock every year,
- 1:29Speaker 4: this is a reminder that it's coming up this week,
- 1:33Speaker 4: coming up on Friday and Saturday.
- 1:34Speaker 1: But for those who aren't familiar with Cindy Stock, tell
- 1:36Speaker 1: us everything we need to know.
- 1:38Speaker 2: It is a two day event.
- 1:40Speaker 3: We have music, we have food, we have silent auctions,
- 1:45Speaker 3: we have fun, and we have our extra special guest
- 1:50Speaker 3: this year, coming back for his fourth trip to Cindy Stock,
- 1:54Speaker 3: Henry Dilt, the original Woodstock photographer, who is going to
- 1:58Speaker 3: do a slide show. And even if you've come before,
- 2:03Speaker 3: he and I are working on a little different slide
- 2:05Speaker 3: show this year, and so we hope that some of
- 2:08Speaker 3: these pictures are things you've never ever seen before in
- 2:11Speaker 3: his slide show, and some stories and it's just going
- 2:14Speaker 3: to be a lot of fun.
- 2:16Speaker 1: And of course what is the what's the reason behind
- 2:19Speaker 1: Cindy Starks Well, of.
- 2:20Speaker 3: Course the reason is that right now people are struggling
- 2:25Speaker 3: with costs of everything, and we feel that no person
- 2:33Speaker 3: should be left without an opportunity to get a cancer
- 2:36Speaker 3: screening test, regardless of their health insurance situation, and that's
- 2:41Speaker 3: only getting worse, and we want to be sure that
- 2:44Speaker 3: everybody has that opportunity. So we fund agencies that provide
- 2:48Speaker 3: free screenings or screenings irregardless of whether or not you
- 2:53Speaker 3: have health insurance, and that's extremely important to us. The
- 2:56Speaker 3: other thing is the gaps. We want to make sure
- 2:59Speaker 3: that people aren't falling through. And when you go through
- 3:01Speaker 3: a cancer diagnosis, your whole world changes, and we don't
- 3:05Speaker 3: want you to feel unsupported or alone, and so we
- 3:08Speaker 3: support agencies like hair Peace Charities and Cancer Bridges who
- 3:13Speaker 3: both provide tremendous support services for people who are going
- 3:17Speaker 3: through cancer and not have to do it alone.
- 3:21Speaker 1: All right, So over two decades ago, you came up
- 3:24Speaker 1: with this idea to do this. Oh, oh, by the way,
- 3:27Speaker 1: tell us where it is.
- 3:28Speaker 3: Oh, it's in Wexford, PA. And yeah, it's in my backyard.
- 3:34Speaker 1: That's the best part.
- 3:35Speaker 2: And the parking is in our neighbor's backyard.
- 3:37Speaker 1: Thank God for them, and hope hopefully you get along
- 3:40Speaker 1: pretty well with you.
- 3:41Speaker 2: We have the best neighbors in the plan.
- 3:43Speaker 1: That's awesome, all right. So over two decades ago you
- 3:46Speaker 1: came up with this idea and twenty three years later
- 3:49Speaker 1: you're still doing it.
- 3:51Speaker 3: It is a labor of love, There's no question. And
- 3:54Speaker 3: sometimes I cry in Aisle five of Costco when I think,
- 3:58Speaker 3: oh my gosh, how am I going to put us
- 3:59Speaker 3: all scars some stuff? But we have a tremendous team
- 4:03Speaker 3: of volunteers. And when the whole team comes together and
- 4:08Speaker 3: I look out at my backyard that is filled with
- 4:10Speaker 3: hundreds of people who are all coming together to make
- 4:13Speaker 3: a huge difference. They're having fun and they're making a
- 4:17Speaker 3: difference for someone tomorrow.
- 4:19Speaker 2: How can you beat that?
- 4:19Speaker 1: Now it's two days. It's coming up this Friday, August
- 4:23Speaker 1: twenty first. Now this is going to be featuring your
- 4:27Speaker 1: friend from Woodstock, your Woodstock friend. Now you also include meals.
- 4:32Speaker 1: Is that Friday or is that just Saturday?
- 4:34Speaker 3: So on Friday night we will probably have pizza and
- 4:38Speaker 3: soft drinks and some dessert along with an opening band
- 4:44Speaker 3: who does Woodstock and Krisby Sales Nash Type Music. They're fabulous,
- 4:49Speaker 3: the Sweet Duties, and then Henry Dilts will do his
- 4:52Speaker 3: slide show as soon as the sun goes down and
- 4:55Speaker 3: we'll have that as fun. And then on Saturday we
- 4:57Speaker 3: have four bands and we have a full buffet dinner
- 5:00Speaker 3: and dessert as well.
- 5:02Speaker 1: And that's the main annual concert benefit concert and Bill
- 5:06Speaker 1: Tom's and Hard Rain.
- 5:08Speaker 2: Bill what a big heart.
- 5:09Speaker 1: Yeah. Bill is an amazing individual. He really is.
- 5:12Speaker 3: He's thirty years doing this and what I loved was
- 5:15Speaker 3: watching him at the Pittsburgh Music Festival. When he was
- 5:18Speaker 3: all finished, he took off his hard rock outfit and
- 5:21Speaker 3: then he just played with his grandchildren, and you know, like,
- 5:24Speaker 3: that's what our event is like. It's real people, it's
- 5:28Speaker 3: all heart, it's grassroots, it's.
- 5:31Speaker 1: Pittsburgh and when I'm a musician, right.
- 5:33Speaker 2: He is fantastic.
- 5:34Speaker 1: And that's just one of four artists you have. Crystal
- 5:37Speaker 1: Bauer Soocks.
- 5:38Speaker 3: Crystal Bauer Socks was the should have won American Idol
- 5:42Speaker 3: the year she was on. She came on second place.
- 5:44Speaker 3: And she has played Cyndy Stock before and has such
- 5:48Speaker 3: a good time. She said she would love to come back,
- 5:51Speaker 3: So we're really really excited to have her coming back
- 5:53Speaker 3: for us.
- 5:54Speaker 1: And Lisa Sanders and Brown Sugar.
- 5:56Speaker 3: Lisa Sanders and Brown Sugar I met through Folk Alliance
- 5:59Speaker 3: and they are flying in all the way from San
- 6:02Speaker 3: Diego to do our show. And she said it is
- 6:05Speaker 3: because her mother's eye of cancer, and she feels really
- 6:11Speaker 3: connected to the heart of what we're doing and wants
- 6:14Speaker 3: to very very much participate. And she's been a tremendous
- 6:18Speaker 3: advocate for our event.
- 6:21Speaker 1: Let's face it, we've all been touched by cancer, someway
- 6:24Speaker 1: sadly yes. And then Rudy. That's Bob Rudolph. Don't talk
- 6:28Speaker 1: about him.
- 6:29Speaker 2: So we met.
- 6:29Speaker 3: He came last year to see and Sandio the band
- 6:32Speaker 3: that we had, and he was just absolutely crazy about it.
- 6:36Speaker 3: And so we always like to open up with a
- 6:39Speaker 3: local acoustic guitar player and so Rudy is our guy
- 6:42Speaker 3: this year. We're looking forward to having him kick.
- 6:44Speaker 1: Off the day and dinner buffet and then the silent auction.
- 6:48Speaker 1: Do you have any item auction items that you want
- 6:51Speaker 1: to mention?
- 6:51Speaker 3: We have Henry Dilt's pictures as always he donates pictures.
- 6:56Speaker 3: We also have some dealer item We have Penn State
- 7:01Speaker 3: and Pit Merchandise. We always always have several alcohol baskets
- 7:07Speaker 3: because we know what you like and some are bourbons,
- 7:12Speaker 3: some are maybe moonshine or whiskey wine. We're not quite
- 7:15Speaker 3: sure yet. We're putting them all together next week and
- 7:17Speaker 3: it'll be a lot of fun.
- 7:18Speaker 1: Do you have any sponsors you would like to mention
- 7:20Speaker 1: the sponsors?
- 7:21Speaker 3: We have two sponsors. Allegating Health Network has been a
- 7:25Speaker 3: sponsor and UPMC is our premier sponsor this year. We
- 7:29Speaker 3: are so grateful because the funds that they have given
- 7:32Speaker 3: us through sponsorship allow us to give everything to the agencies.
- 7:38Speaker 2: That we support.
- 7:39Speaker 1: All right.
- 7:39Speaker 3: Four and last one, Nick Saxon Saxon I in Key
- 7:44Speaker 3: is donating a great deal of food this year and
- 7:46Speaker 3: we're really appreciated.
- 7:47Speaker 1: Good for good for them. All right. So we only
- 7:49Speaker 1: have about a minute and a half left. So sidey

- 8:04Speaker 3: We have to make sure we have enough food and

- 9:06Speaker 6: Nathan has taught me to embrace them all there age wise,
- 9:11Speaker 6: I mean, I'm just.
- 9:12Speaker 7: I'm in my late sixties, I'm old of his grandfather.
- 9:15Speaker 7: Will it be embarrassed he acknowledge me as his dad.
- 9:18Speaker 7: I think the most important thing we can do is
- 9:20Speaker 7: let them know that they're safe, that they're valued and
- 9:23Speaker 7: cared for and loved, and that they're important.
- 9:28Speaker 8: I knew I wanted to be adopted by him because
- 9:31Speaker 8: of how he taught me to be the person who
- 9:33Speaker 8: I am today. And it's coming from a dad that
- 9:36Speaker 8: didn't expect to become adapted, and I feel very proud
- 9:39Speaker 8: to be his son.
- 9:40Speaker 6: That was what he needed and he was what I needed.
- 9:44Speaker 6: Every day is full of new opportunities. That's what it's
- 9:47Speaker 6: been about, realizing the simple things that it takes to
- 9:50Speaker 6: make such a huge difference in these kids' lives.
