- 0:27Hey everybody, good morning from the chicken coop.
- 0:30So today I want to talk to you about asking for help because I
- 0:35think it's one of the hardest things that we all go through as
- 0:40human beings. Apparently Wilma here thinks the
- 0:44same thing as she comes up to sit while I'm recording this and
- 0:48asking for help is a very, very hard thing for people to do.
- 0:52I see it constantly within my coaching practice.
- 0:56When people call and say they want to finally get help, it's
- 0:59usually a last ditch effort. It's kind of one of those things
- 1:03where they reach the point of desperation and then they say,
- 1:06OK, I need help, I need different perspective.
- 1:08I need someone to come and talk to me about something.
- 1:10I need to, you know, have a different perspective put into
- 1:14my head because the one that I'm dealing with right now is not
- 1:16working for me. But it's not something that they
- 1:19go to easily. And I think most of us have been
- 1:25wired to believe that when you ask for help, it's because
- 1:29you're out of resources. It's because you've gotten to a
- 1:32point where you can't show that you're doing something
- 1:35independently. And I see it over and over and
- 1:40over again where people struggle and they feel by the time they
- 1:44show up and they are on the phone with me and they're asking
- 1:47for help in something, they've reached a point of desperation
- 1:50and they've gotten to this position where they are mad at
- 1:53themselves for feeling a certain way.
- 1:55And I can't stress enough how that is just the wrong
- 2:00perspective to have. If you have gotten to the point
- 2:04where you are willing to ask for help, then you've recognized
- 2:09very smartly that you can no longer continue in the position
- 2:14that you're in. You can no longer continue to
- 2:15remain in the perspective you're in and successfully navigate it.
- 2:20So it's it is important and necessary to recognize that that
- 2:26that little bit of information, that little tidbit of
- 2:29information is meant to give you everything you need in order to
- 2:33shift and change. And it's nothing to be ashamed
- 2:36of. It's actually brilliant that
- 2:37you've recognized it. It's a different level of a
- 2:40mindset, it's a growth mindset. At that point, when you say,
- 2:43listen, I can't grow without having additional input, I need
- 2:47to have additional input, but it requires us to pause and not
- 2:52shame ourselves in the moment of saying I need help humble
- 2:56ourselves and say Nope, this is I I can't do this by myself.
- 3:00Being able to do that is huge. I I think it's an important
- 3:05distinction to recognize that I have a coach.
- 3:09I think lots of people that I know who are coaches have
- 3:12coaches, because if you have somebody that you're working
- 3:16with, that shows that you can pause and find those things
- 3:19within yourself as well. So there's no shame in it.
- 3:22Whether you go to a coach, as I said, or go to a therapist, or
- 3:28go to a psychiatrist, or, you know, anybody that can give you
- 3:33advice, a mentor, whatever it might be.
- 3:37This is necessary to ask for help when you need it and not
- 3:42shame yourself for needing it. Actually celebrate yourself for
- 3:46recognizing I need help because that's the moment that change
- 3:50begins. So I first of all, if you're in
- 3:54the position where you need to recognize that, I'll ask you to
- 3:56pause and say please do an inventory and ask yourself what
- 4:00do I need help with? Like right now?
- 4:02That's an excellent exercise for you to do.
- 4:04What do I need help with? Where do I feel stuck?
- 4:06Because if you can take that quick inventory, then you can
- 4:09say, OK, like they're just certain things in our lives and
- 4:12I don't care if it's something as simple as, listen, I don't
- 4:14want to go in the grocery store anymore.
- 4:15I need help. I need to be able to just pull
- 4:17up and go ahead and pick up my groceries.
- 4:20Don't be ashamed of that. We, all of us, don't have time.
- 4:24Do that. If you need help having you
- 4:26know, somebody come and do tutoring with your kids.
- 4:29I mean, if that's one of the biggest things that I hear
- 4:31lately is that people are struggling with their kids in
- 4:34school and their kids need help and they don't know how to do
- 4:37the homework because God knows, it's been a significant amount
- 4:40of time since they've been out of school.
- 4:41They don't understand it and it's driving them crazy.
- 4:43And the kids in them can't sit down and have a decent
- 4:46conversation because there's so much homework that they're
- 4:48focused on fighting. So it's a awareness that says we
- 4:51need help to do the homework. We need somebody to come over
- 4:54here and help us with this. We might need a tutor.
- 4:56We might need a kid that's a little bit older that can come
- 5:00and do this. It's already done it.
- 5:01Whatever it might be, it's that, oh, clearly we need help.
- 5:06Just look at everything. Even if it's just having
- 5:08somebody in your life that you can brainstorm with, that you
- 5:11can mentor with, that you can ask questions to and feel
- 5:15comfortable with it. You've got to put yourself into
- 5:18that growth mindset and say I am capable of asking for help and
- 5:22doing it and successfully navigating it, allowing myself
- 5:27to be humble and do so. So hopefully this got through to
- 5:31you guys today because I'm knocking on the door and I'm
- 5:33saying please ask for help. Please reach out and tell people
- 5:37when you need it. Please do not try to do
- 5:39everything on your own. Nobody can.
- 5:41I don't care who you are, nobody can do it.
- 5:44So I hope you guys have a very blessed day and I will see you
- 5:49all tomorrow. Take care.
