- 0:13Speaker 1: It's midnight at the Shady Oaks apartment complex. A resident
- 0:17is walking back to his apartment when suddenly he's shot
- 0:24by an unidentified man, a firecracker born. When police rush
- 0:32to the scene, they're immediately faced with a barrage of gunfire,
- 0:36targeting anyone who moves, and no idea who or how
- 0:40many shooters are active, all while dozens of innocent lives
- 0:43are at fatal risk.
- 0:47Speaker 2: Now just call him down. What kind of injury do
- 0:53you have?
- 0:53Speaker 3: It's a gunshot?
- 0:54Speaker 2: Okay, who shot you?
- 0:56Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 1:00Speaker 2: I'm gonna get snipers put up on the east side.
- 1:03Speaker 4: Yes, get over here, get over here, we get tell
- 1:07the drug now.
- 1:15Speaker 1: At approximately two seventeen am on that Sunday night, officers
- 1:19receive reports of gunshots near Shady Oaks apartment complex. Minutes later,
- 1:24around two twenty am, first responder officer Cody Needham approaches
- 1:28the scene to investigate. Little does he know the gunshot
- 1:31reports were part of a trap set by the shooters
- 1:34and he was driving straight into it.
- 1:46Speaker 2: I think I've been shot.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Moments after entering the parking lot, Officer need Him is
- 1:51struck by a bullet as multiple shots rang out and
- 1:54immediately radios nearby officers for backup.
- 1:57Speaker 2: I'm going to the hospital. This batch lett you or know.
- 2:00There was a rapid succession of shots. Do you know
- 2:03where it came from. It's backed by Shady Oaks.
- 2:06Speaker 5: There were more shots backed by Shady Oaks.
- 2:10Speaker 2: Okay, we need to get a perimeter around this building.
- 2:13Speaker 1: Multiple units nearby are now en route to Shady Oaks. However,
- 2:17the scale of police response will soon grow much larger
- 2:20as officers realize the severity of the situation and the
- 2:24danger pose to the civilians. But for now, as backup
- 2:27units head towards the scene, Officer need Him speeds towards
- 2:30the hospital, still uncertain how severe his injuries are.
- 2:38Speaker 6: I have a shot.
- 2:39Speaker 3: I don't know what the out.
- 2:43Speaker 1: We're here, We'll need him receives urgent medical care. Backup
- 2:48Officer Christopher Deson and other units make their way towards
- 2:51Shady Oaks, completely unaware they're stepping into a deadly eight
- 2:55hour long standoff. In rapidly chaotic incidents like these, officers
- 3:03have no choice but to make split second tactical decisions.
- 3:07To fully understand how police manage such dangerous situations, We'll
- 3:10follow every tactic and decision through every stage of the standoff,
- 3:15starting with Officer Deson, who's just arrived on scene to
- 3:18a barrage of gunfire erupting unpredictably.
- 3:22Speaker 2: We don't know what the coming up in front of
- 3:27them right now, what.
- 3:54Speaker 5: You've been shot at?
- 3:58Speaker 7: Just calm down, calm.
- 4:00Speaker 2: Down, high.
- 4:06Speaker 1: Who is that your coat? Officer Deson and other responding
- 4:14officers quickly take position behind a water pump house located
- 4:17near the parking lot on the west side of the complex.
- 4:20But there's a more immediate worry weighing on the officers.
- 4:23Many civilians remain unaware and exposed, and every gunshot could
- 4:28mean another innocent resident being targeted. With dozens of innocent
- 4:32lives at stake. Officer Ris Musen and Tim Harves arrive
- 4:36near Deson's location on the west side, positioning themselves nearby
- 4:39to help scan the area and pinpoint where the gunfire
- 4:42is coming from.
- 4:49Speaker 7: Sixtys what as I got.
- 4:58Speaker 6: Roll the corner up here me in a decent pull
- 5:02up here, it was what three four shots?
- 5:05Speaker 5: And when I put up here before we got shot out.
- 5:08Speaker 2: So somebody shooting out at the window of the building. Chris,
- 5:11can you come over here.
- 5:13Speaker 5: They're shooting at any law enforcement that comes through. If
- 5:16we if we go out any further, we're gonna get
- 5:18shot at.
- 5:18Speaker 2: If this is an active shooter, we need to get
- 5:21a team ready, We need to probably start dealing with it.
- 5:25Speaker 1: At this stage, the situation facing officers is extremely dangerous.
- 5:29The Shady Oaks apartment complex contains approximately one hundred and
- 5:33twenty six units, and with near zero visibility and gunshots
- 5:37ringing out unpredictably, police have no way of pinpointing exactly
- 5:41where the shooters are located, whether they're barricaded, mobile or
- 5:45roaming freely, or even how many shooters are active. What's
- 5:49more alarming is that officers don't yet realize they're dealing
- 5:52with a carefully planned ambush, and the next few minutes
- 5:55will make that terrifyingly clear.
- 5:58Speaker 5: We want to get eyes on the we need to
- 6:01get cars there, We need to get back over here.
- 6:04Speaker 2: Right, yeah, so we're gonna have to. We're probably gonna happen.
- 6:12Where the fuck is this guy? He's close, he's outside
- 6:18of that.
- 6:24Speaker 4: Okay, he's running across you see him?
- 6:35Speaker 2: Where that way?
- 6:38Speaker 8: Ran that direction?
- 6:41Speaker 3: I don't know if you got shot at or what
- 6:42the coaches.
- 6:43Speaker 7: Ran across the back walk.
- 6:45Speaker 5: He's running. I don't know if it was him or
- 6:50someone that got shot at. Correct they ran out here
- 6:54in that direction. You know they're behind the trees here
- 6:58other side of the trees. I think that's a high
- 7:01pod rifle, something high.
- 7:08Speaker 3: Calm down, Do not bowl me over.
- 7:13Speaker 2: Shot shot house.
- 7:15Speaker 5: It's coming from the front of the building and impact
- 7:18in the road.
- 7:20Speaker 2: I'm a little foreign.
- 7:22Speaker 1: One of the shots officers just heard was aimed at
- 7:25a resident who stepped outside the building, completely unaware of
- 7:28the active threat. He was struck and immediately ran away.
- 7:32With danger escalating and officers still unsure how many shooters
- 7:36they're dealing with or even where the next shot might
- 7:39come from, their immediate focus shifts to two critical priorities. First,
- 7:44identify and engage the source of the gunfire. Second, secure
- 7:48the perimeter and evacuate civilians inside and outside the building
- 7:51to prevent further casualties. However, officers still don't have a
- 7:55key to access the building from any side, adding a
- 7:58major complication their plan. So to move forward, Officer Decon
- 8:03and Harve's formulate a tactical plan. One group remains in position,
- 8:08carefully engaging and distracting the shooters to pinpoint their exact
- 8:11locations and number. Meanwhile, a second group cautiously moves around
- 8:16the perimeter, evacuating civilians from areas exposed to gunfire. It's
- 8:21important to understand that incidents like these are not only
- 8:24traumatic for the officers working them, but they can often

- 9:34that said, let's get back to the scene. The evacuation
- 9:37team is about to spread out and begin sweeping the
- 9:39west side of the perimeter. With the shooter's identities still unknown,
- 9:43they have to treat everyone they encounter as a potential threat.
- 9:49Speaker 7: Come here, hey, come here? Do you have a keyp
- 9:52up of the building? Okay?
- 9:55Speaker 2: Are you okay? Yeah? Shooting?
- 9:57Speaker 7: You need to go to Sea univers I heard it.
- 10:07Drop your car.
- 10:09Speaker 6: It's the second floor, so you think it's the.
- 10:13Speaker 8: Second floor in the side.
- 10:15Speaker 7: Okay, go back to your car, staying there?
- 10:18Speaker 2: Okay.
- 10:19Speaker 1: Off a service muse and manages to clear this first
- 10:22encounter with a residence safely, but as he moves further
- 10:24into the parking lot, he spots someone he believes might
- 10:28be one of the shooters.
- 10:31Speaker 9: H stop right now, stop, turn around, drop your knees.
- 10:53I got a guy that just walked out. He's in
- 10:55the parking lot. I got on my cup point. I
- 10:59need somebody in here. Stay where you're at right now. Okay,
- 11:11we've got somebody shooting from your building right now.
- 11:14Speaker 7: Okay, okay, okay, hey him, go to him.
- 11:22Speaker 2: Stop.
- 11:24Speaker 7: Yeah, come here, come here, come here, this police department.
- 11:28Speaker 2: Come here.
- 11:29Speaker 7: There's somebody shooting from your building right now. Okay, keep
- 11:35your hands out of your pockets. Please go to that
- 11:39red car over there.
- 11:41Speaker 6: Go.
- 11:42Speaker 1: The individuals turn out to be residents, completely unaware of
- 11:45the danger they've just narrowly avoided, but Resmusin's attention quickly
- 11:49shifts towards two more residents exiting from the back of
- 11:52the building, one clearly injured and struggling.
- 11:58Speaker 7: Keith, you got up in the building. Okay, come on,
- 12:12come on.
- 12:18Speaker 2: Right here. No, I handed my boon off. I have
- 12:25no way back.
- 12:26Speaker 7: Okay, Well you're not going back in anyway, So you're fine.
- 12:30Are you heard it all through? You're just the one?
- 12:33Speaker 8: Okay, I'm right here that might pull right there the light.
- 12:43Speaker 2: Okay, what kind of injury do you have.
- 12:46Speaker 3: It's a gunshot.
- 12:47Speaker 2: Okay, who shot you?
- 12:48Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 12:49Speaker 7: I come out that door.
- 12:50Speaker 3: We just came out of with spacing that away and
- 12:52that's when I got shot.
- 12:54Speaker 2: Okay, come right over here, sir. Just hop right into
- 12:57the back seat on that side.
- 13:01Speaker 1: One of the civilians encountered by police is Shady Oaks
- 13:04resident Daniel Thorpe, the same person officers spotted running away
- 13:08earlier after being targeted by gunfire. Daniel is now the
- 13:12second confirmed victim, following Officer Cody need Him. Unfortunately, they
- 13:17won't be the only casualties as the night continues.
- 13:20Speaker 4: Okay, she has been Get over here, Get over here,
- 13:26we can tell the.
- 13:27Speaker 2: Run now.
- 13:31Speaker 1: By now, multiple SWAT teams have been requested to assist
- 13:35with the situation, but Daniel's close call underscores just how
- 13:38deadly the situation remains for the countless residents both inside
- 13:42and outside the complex. Many of them are still going
- 13:45about their night, not even realizing they're in any danger. Thankfully,
- 13:49Officer Vis Musen gained crucial intel from the woman he
- 13:52encountered outside the building. According to her, the shots appeared
- 13:55to originate from an apartment on the front side of
- 13:58the building, possibly on the second floor. But most importantly,
- 14:02she provides the officer with a key to access the building.
- 14:06With dozens of innocent lives still at risk, police urgently
- 14:10need to devise a plan to infiltrate the building and
- 14:12evacuate residents before the shooters have a chance to move positions,
- 14:16or worse, start targeting residents door to door. If the
- 14:20next steps aren't executed perfectly, the consequences could be catastrophic.
- 14:28With this in mind, Officer Tim Harves repositions to a
- 14:32parking lot near giant washed Skyline Express just southeast of
- 14:36Shady Oaks to meet with command, await incoming SWAT teams
- 14:39and strategize their next move level.
- 14:43Speaker 2: We haven't been able to get in vacumen. They were
- 14:45thinking maybe like second floor, but now Chris is saying
- 14:49there's movement on seventh. But there's movement all over. If
- 14:52you watch those windows, nobody's identified where or who.
- 14:55Speaker 6: Once I get more SWAB bodies in, I'm going to
- 14:58start forming up some perimeter teams to take over a perimeter.
- 15:01Speaker 2: I'm gonna get snipers put up on the east side. Yes, yeah,
- 15:05so I think have been coming from the front of
- 15:07little area.
- 15:09Speaker 1: By this stage, police have gained important but conflicting information
- 15:13about the shooters. Witnesses indicate activity on the second floor
- 15:16at the front of the building, yet Officer Deson's group
- 15:19has reported suspicious movement higher up, possibly as high as
- 15:23the seventh floor. With these conflicting reports, the situation remains
- 15:28risky and unpredictable, so to gain some control, multi jurisdictional
- 15:34SWAT teams are now en route to help secure the
- 15:36building's perimeter, deploy snipers, and infiltrate the complex to evacuate
- 15:41civilians trapped inside. In the meantime, Officer Christopher Dison and
- 15:46his group continue to hold a critical position at the
- 15:48west end, actively scanning the building to pinpoint how many
- 15:52shooters they were dealing with and their locations of fire.
- 16:04Speaker 3: Yep, how much wander there's.
- 16:12Speaker 5: Correct correct. Some are moving towards thee that did hit
- 16:23across the street, right across the street from me.
- 16:25Speaker 3: It sounded like a bird shot well.
- 16:28Speaker 1: Officer Decent's team continues to hold their position on the
- 16:31west side. A critical oversight is exposed in the perimeter setup.
- 16:35Road closures intended to prevent civilian traffic from entering the
- 16:39active shooting zone were established quickly enough, allowing unaware drivers
- 16:43to slip through. This major flaw is about to lead
- 16:47to disastrous consequences.
- 16:51Speaker 5: What how did you you going go?
- 16:57Speaker 3: Go out there?
- 17:07Speaker 1: Fortunately, this first vehicle manages to pass without getting hit,
- 17:12but just minutes later, officers spot another set of headlights approaching,
- 17:17heading directly into the line of fire.
- 17:29Speaker 7: Fired half calf tired, No.
- 17:38Speaker 10: Direct Maybe they're not ating directly vehicle coming northbound on.
- 17:51Speaker 1: Fourth Officers quickly realized the rapid succession of shots was
- 17:55not directed at them, but at a civilian vehicle passing
- 17:58by the front of Shady Oaks. After being hit, the
- 18:01driver continues forward, eventually stopping on the west side, still
- 18:05within the active firing zone, but close to where officers
- 18:08are positioned, and that's when they hear the driver's disturbing screens.
- 18:17Speaker 3: Get over here, I don't.
- 18:29Speaker 7: I don't come.
- 18:33Speaker 8: Alone. You have.
- 18:36Speaker 7: I think it's just through and through?
- 18:42Speaker 2: How girl? Friend?
- 18:43Speaker 5: Yeah, we can't get up there right now. We cannot
- 18:46get up there right now.
- 18:48Speaker 1: The injured driver was struck in the leg and is
- 18:51rapidly losing blood. Officers quickly apply a tourniquet to control
- 18:55the bleeding and stabilize him until he can be transported
- 18:58to the hospital. But before they can even catch their breath,
- 19:02another serious problem appears. Other residents and civilians continue to
- 19:07pass close to the active firing zone, oblivious to the
- 19:10lethal danger surrounding them. That's when Officer Decent spots something alarming.
- 19:15Someone riding on a bicycle is suddenly seen riding straight
- 19:19through the active firing zone, heading directly towards officers.
- 19:24Speaker 3: Flight right now, you can stop that guy on.
- 19:29Speaker 4: Here, get it, get your hands get over here, get
- 19:32over here, Get down on the ground, Get down on
- 19:35the ground.
- 19:35Speaker 2: Now, I am what's the fuck?
- 19:38Speaker 7: We got people shooting out of that building.
- 19:40Speaker 9: Guy.
- 19:40Speaker 3: Shit, we don't know if it's you yet.
- 19:42Speaker 2: No, no, we don't know that yet.
- 19:44Speaker 3: Oh we got a prone out right here.
- 19:45Speaker 2: We're checking him.
- 19:46Speaker 3: I didn't hear no gun.
- 19:48Speaker 2: Are you kidding?
- 19:49Speaker 5: You?
- 19:49Speaker 2: Guys stood the fuck out of me? How do you
- 19:51think we feel?
- 19:52Speaker 3: Why didn't you kid shooting each other's over there? Get
- 19:55to crawl over what's happening over there?
- 19:58Speaker 7: Over here?
- 19:58Speaker 3: Okay, crawl crawl over here.
- 20:02Speaker 5: Come up by the building here where you're saying, all right,
- 20:04put your hands down again. We just had somebody got
- 20:06shot out in the street.
- 20:07Speaker 7: From here you go any hang on?
- 20:09Speaker 9: You can you take the bank out of seat please so.
- 20:11Speaker 7: You can look it down.
- 20:12Speaker 5: You can search me if you take the bag off. O.
- 20:17This bag just has a hammer and some tool. Okay,
- 20:20it's not him, obviously out stay down. Okay, what's obviously
- 20:24not himmer? Okay, why don't you come up.
- 20:26Speaker 2: Here, sir? Come up by the building where you're saying. Okay,
- 20:31now you hear what we're dealing with.
- 20:33Speaker 1: Thankfully, officers quickly determined the biker was not a threat,
- 20:37managing to pull him to safety before he was harmed.
- 20:39Immediately afterwards, police units quickly finished establishing roadblocks around the complex,
- 20:45finally preventing further civilians from entering the danger zone. With
- 20:49no targets in sight, the shooting abruptly stops. This brief
- 20:55pause gives officers an opportunity to reassess their positions as
- 20:59they wait for swant support, unaware of the violent escalation
- 21:04just hours away.
- 21:08Speaker 2: Prior. Do you think it's gone quiet because he just
- 21:15doesn't have anything to shoot at. Yeah, keep them at
- 21:27a staging point, Keith. We have an armored vehicle on
- 21:31seeing here. We'll be sending all I believe.
- 21:33Speaker 1: At approximately four am, SWAT armored vehicles finally arrive on
- 21:37the opposite side of the building, marking a critical turning
- 21:40point in the operation. For the first time, officers have
- 21:43the tactical support they need to close in and bring
- 21:46the shooters into custody.
- 21:47Speaker 3: And we've got more individual here now, team getting.
- 21:51Speaker 7: Them out of here.
- 21:53Speaker 2: Do you want to jump me with him? Yeah, all right,
- 21:57we'll come. Thanks for coming.
- 22:00Speaker 1: I know our team's setting up too, so we'll be
- 22:03over here soon.
- 22:05Speaker 2: Not what we expected.
- 22:08Speaker 1: With SWAT teams now on scene, a sniper unit quickly
- 22:12moves into position on the east side of the Shady
- 22:14Oaks complex, giving officers critical visibility. At the same time,
- 22:19entry teams on the west side prepare for their next move.
- 22:21It's finally time to move inside the building.
- 22:25Speaker 2: You're recovery, Get up there, goal one at a time.
- 22:28Speaker 4: Okay, okay, I'm gonna move.
- 22:30Speaker 7: Right yep, three oh six were by the dumpster?
- 22:39Speaker 2: Where you were? What's your twenty year?
- 23:09Speaker 1: After carefully evacuating ground floor residents over the next two hours,
- 23:13SWAT teams successfully secure the lower levels, ensuring the shooters
- 23:17have no path to escape. As the sun rises over
- 23:22Shady Oaks. Police gain a critical advantage daylight with improved visibility,
- 23:29They deployed drones overhead, giving officers a clear, real time
- 23:32view of the complex. As the drone hovers above Shady Oaks,
- 23:36officers notice movement on the third floor, someone barricaded near
- 23:40a window in Apartment three oh three. Sniper's position across
- 23:44the street, quickly adjusts their aim towards the apartment, while
- 23:46officers remain on high alert, knowing other suspects could be
- 23:50hidden throughout the building. Over the next hour, tensions escalate
- 23:54as the barricaded shooter fires and destroys a police drone
- 23:58monitoring his position. At a round eight am, negotiation team's
- 24:02attempt to make contact, urging the shooter to surrender peacefully,
- 24:06but despite repeated attempts, he refuses to respond. By ten am,
- 24:13after over eight hours of standoff and with peaceful options,
- 24:17exhausted and armored SWAT vehicle pulls up directly into the
- 24:21shooter's line of sight, preparing to launch enough tear gas
- 24:24canisters to saturate the entire apartment. Moments after the gas
- 24:36enters the apartment, the barricaded suspect moves to the window
- 24:39for the first time, officers see his face. It's a
- 24:42young man barely out of his teens, armed and ready
- 24:46to fire back. Following the shooter's reaction, a single, carefully
- 24:52aimed sniper shot shatters the apartment window, sending shards of
- 24:56glass directly into the shooter's forehead. Moments later, he appears
- 25:01from the window holding a towel to his face, clearly
- 25:04weakened and disoriented. A SWANT team immediately rushes to apartment
- 25:09three oh three to apprehend the shooter. Inside, they find
- 25:13him wounded but cooperative, quickly placing him into custody and
- 25:16escorting him out of the.
- 25:18Speaker 3: Building or they'll check them.
- 25:27Speaker 2: Change and left hand as baggy pants. Check down by
- 25:30his feet, nothing on his feet.
- 25:34Speaker 9: I am not.
- 25:39Speaker 2: Hands pulled up? How my arm?
- 25:47Speaker 7: You want to switch up?
- 25:50Speaker 8: You can give me an iou.
- 25:52Speaker 1: The shooter is soon identified as Devin Matthew Wayland. Inside
- 25:57his apartment, officers recover multiple firearms, including the rifle used
- 26:01throughout the standoff. Officers continue to search the complex and
- 26:05after a thorough sweep, they find no other threats, confirming
- 26:09Devon was the only shooter. As he has transported to
- 26:12the hospital for medical treatment. Detectives begin rehashing details of
- 26:16the shooting. That's when they make a troubling discovery. The
- 26:19initial nine to one one call reporting fireworks had been
- 26:22placed by Devon himself.
- 26:25Speaker 2: Critish Warner heard a gun shuttering, firecracker was born.
- 26:30Speaker 1: Investigators quickly realized the call was a deliberate attempt to
- 26:34lure responding officers directly into his line of fire. Given
- 26:38the calculated nature of the ambush, they suspect that Devon
- 26:42may not have acted alone, that he could be linked
- 26:45to a larger threat, perhaps associated with an extremist group
- 26:48or a broader violent plan. With this in mind, detectives
- 26:52bring Devin straight into an interrogation room as soon as
- 26:55he is medically cleared, urgently seeking answers about his true
- 26:58motives and whether any additional attexts were placed.
- 27:03Speaker 2: Hey Devin, Hell, all right, I've been better. Yeah, it
- 27:06looks like it. Okay, though, can you is that okay?
- 27:09We visit?
- 27:10Speaker 6: Yeah, okay, Now, let's back up to the day before
- 27:14the incident and just talk to us about your day
- 27:16and kind of what's going on. Everything seemed all write,
- 27:19Everything seemed fine, okay. These ex friends of mine, they
- 27:23want to hang out with me, and it was gonna
- 27:25be his girlfriend's birthday, the twenty first birthday, so they
- 27:27wanted to party and drink.
- 27:28Speaker 2: Well, I am.
- 27:31Speaker 6: I do like the little cold still cushion. I like
- 27:34to see people's use and ask them why they think
- 27:36about second, respect them deeper and like the stuff. Yep, okay,
- 27:39But it just turns out that they're next speakers. And
- 27:41I think one guy was tweaking there. This guy's name
- 27:43was Seth something, and they're all like trying to They're saying,
- 27:47I'm getting in their face and screaming at the mine
- 27:48personally death from working in machinery. I said, I'm sorry,
- 27:51I'll get out there with my hands and knees. I'll
- 27:53show you I'm not being violent. And this woman was saying,
- 27:55get out my man's face, and I'm like, I'm not
- 27:57in your man's face. I'm just saying, this is how
- 27:59I view about the suit wish because how could I respect?
- 28:01You'd been nothing but nice to me, so Shias until
- 28:03this point on, and Judd said go his face.
- 28:05Speaker 2: I said, on your face.
- 28:06Speaker 5: He pushed me.
- 28:07Speaker 6: He was trying to fight me, so I fought him
- 28:09and Jordan got on me and he tried fighting me,
- 28:11and he claimed he was trying to make sure there
- 28:12would be no fight to happen. But that was the
- 28:15last straw, and for some reason, I felt like because
- 28:19no one would believe my story, I had my firearms
- 28:21out ready to use, just in case anything did happen,
- 28:24which I didn't want it to. But I had an
- 28:25accident to discharge of my Mozima got rifle and I
- 28:28had one bullet for it.
- 28:29Speaker 2: I'm not sure it was a mental set, but I.
- 28:34Speaker 6: Haven't been employed in a year, and my grandfather died
- 28:38three years ago. I just wanted it, and I didn't
- 28:40want to ever shoot a cop. That's why I surrendered.
- 28:42Were you aiming at anything?
- 28:45Speaker 1: Just the cars?
- 28:46Speaker 6: Just the cars, trying to get the cops to come
- 28:48so that i'd shoot me. I didn't want to shoot
- 28:50the cops. Don want to shoot aybody else to want
- 28:51to the cars so that they would shoot me.
- 28:53Speaker 2: But I couldn't. I couldn't.
- 28:55Speaker 6: I couldn't myself. It's against my own views. I would
- 28:59have to have somebody. Also, if you write a place,
- 29:01so that's where that that idea. I know it sounds
- 29:03really fucked up. I wanted to live. I tried telling
- 29:05myself this and that, but under last night's situation or
- 29:09an ideal, it just got too much to me too fast.
- 29:11So do you remember what exactly you told the dispatcher.
- 29:15Speaker 2: When you called it.
- 29:18Speaker 8: All right?
- 29:18Speaker 6: It sounds like there was a gun shot or fireworks
- 29:21or some type of discharge, like some type of fire shot.
- 29:24If you said the word fireworks, would you mean fireworks.
- 29:27Speaker 2: For my gun? Or actually, I don't know.
- 29:29Speaker 6: Did I say fireworks or you get I don't know
- 29:32if I don't know if.
- 29:33Speaker 2: I did okay.
- 29:35Speaker 1: Perhaps the most striking thing about Devin's confession is his
- 29:39description of feeling trapped between a desperate wish to die
- 29:43and an inability to harm himself, a psychological state commonly
- 29:48known as I'd buy cop, where someone intentionally provokes law
- 29:53enforcement into using deadly force to end their own life.
- 29:57Following the interrogation and detectives to determined that Devon Wayland
- 30:01acted alone, ruling out connections to any larger extremist groups,
- 30:06Devon admitted to intentionally provoking police to respond with deadly force,
- 30:10driven by anger and humiliation after an earlier confrontation at
- 30:15a party. Thankfully, the three victims wounded in the shooting,
- 30:19including Officer Cody need Him, would ultimately recover from their
- 30:22physical injuries.
