- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. Today we are in Isaiah chapter
- 0:2013, Isaiah chapter 13, and especially after last episode
- 0:28talking about the, you know, joy of God and his salvation,
- 0:35lifting up the Lord, all that today's episode is going to kind
- 0:39of hit you like a freight train a little bit.
- 0:41So just be aware that that is coming because now after God
- 0:46has, particularly after Isaiah's been prophesying, preaching
- 0:52about all of the good that would eventually come back to Israel
- 0:57and Judah, part of that good is dealing with evil within the
- 1:02world. So what we're going to see today
- 1:05is God's justice and judgment being poured out onto evil.
- 1:11So sometimes people go, well, why doesn't God stop evil?
- 1:15This today and some over the next few days, is what it looks
- 1:21like for God to take care of evil.
- 1:24We're also going to see some of these things that as Isaiah is
- 1:29prophesying them, it should give us an indication of how we are
- 1:33to read some things even in Revelation with John and borrow
- 1:38some of the word. Pictures and ideas that are at
- 1:42play will help us to understand the end of the book if we do our
- 1:46homework now. So let's begin reading Isaiah
- 1:49chapter 13 verse #1A pronouncement concerning Babylon
- 1:54that Isaiah, son of Amos, saw. Lift up a banner on a barren
- 1:59mountain, call out to them, signal with your hand, and they
- 2:02will go through the gates of the nobles.
- 2:05I have commanded my consecrated ones.
- 2:07Yes, I have called my warriors who celebrate my triumph to
- 2:11execute my wrath. These are those, if you will,
- 2:15that are doing God's will to take care of evil, He says.
- 2:19Listen, a commotion on the mountains, like that of a mighty
- 2:23people. Listen, an uproar among the
- 2:25kingdoms, like nations being gathered together.
- 2:28So you should probably think a little bit about what John says
- 2:33in Revelation about nations being gathered together.
- 2:36It's a time of judgment, says Yahweh of heaven's armies is
- 2:41mobilizing an army for war. They're coming from a distant
- 2:45land from the farthest horizon. Yahweh and the weapons of his
- 2:50wrath to destroy the whole country.
- 2:52So God says Babylon, you're getting wiped out.
- 2:56Verse number six, whale for the day of Yahweh is near.
- 3:00It will come as destruction from the Almighty.
- 3:05This is going to be really important.
- 3:07So the day of the Lord, the day of Yahweh is a consistent theme
- 3:12throughout Scripture. It is the day when all wrongs
- 3:16are made right and all evil is punished.
- 3:20All of those that have been righteous are are vindicated,
- 3:23are shown to be in the right. And so it is a wonderful day in
- 3:28some respects and in the other days, like it is a, it is a
- 3:31fearsome day to think about the day when God justice is
- 3:37exercised on all of human evil. And here we're going to keep
- 3:43reading through to kind of get that fuller picture of, OK, is
- 3:46this talking about the ultimate day of the Lord, or is this
- 3:49talking about a more localized day of the Lord when God
- 3:54executes judgment on Babylon itself, which is a picture of
- 3:58what he will do for all of the human nations at the end of
- 4:02time. So here the Devi always near,
- 4:05it'll come as destruction from the Almighty.
- 4:08Therefore everyone's hands will become weak and every man will
- 4:13lose heart. They'll be horrified.
- 4:15Pain and agony will seize them. They'll be in anguish like a
- 4:19woman in labor. They'll look at each other,
- 4:21their faces flushed with fear. When, if you will, as God brings
- 4:27this, this punishment, this justice on those who have been
- 4:33so horrific to others and caused others to live in fear through
- 4:37what the Babylonians had done to them.
- 4:40Now God says it is coming back on you.
- 4:43Verse #9 Look, the day of Yahweh is coming cruel with fury and
- 4:47burning anger to make the earth a desolation and to destroy its
- 4:52sinners. God is, if you will, like the
- 4:54flood wiping out evil and starting over.
- 4:58Verse #10 Indeed, the stars of the sky and its constellations
- 5:02will not give their light. The sun will be dark when it
- 5:05rises, and the moon will not shine.
- 5:09So here is there's this picture of even the heavens are
- 5:15overturned and changed through this justice that is taking
- 5:19place on earth. I've mentioned before on here,
- 5:25whenever you see any of the heavenly bodies referenced in
- 5:28scripture, you should also think about the angelic beings, the
- 5:33heavenly host, some good, some bad.
- 5:36You have like Michael and Gabriel or some of the ones that
- 5:38are named as being, if you will, the good guys, the good angels.
- 5:42And then you have Satan and the others that are mentioned as
- 5:45being evil against God. And so here there is a turnover
- 5:51not just of the land but also the skies, or if you will use in
- 5:56Genesis one language, the heavens and the earth.
- 5:58So when God brings His justice, it is justice finally brought on
- 6:02both the fallen demons and the earth and the humans that were
- 6:08there, the sky rulers and the land rulers.
- 6:12Verse #11 I will punish the world for its evil and wicked
- 6:17people for their iniquities. I will put an end to the pride
- 6:21of the arrogant and humiliate the insolence of tyrants.
- 6:28We can either, as we heard in James 4, humble ourselves under
- 6:33the mighty hand of God and He will exalt us, or we can choose
- 6:37to say no, I'm going to be proud until God himself humbles me.
- 6:42These tyrants, these kings, despots that proclaimed
- 6:46themselves to be demigods, descendants of divine beings.
- 6:53God says your cruelty, your violence, the way that you have
- 6:59treated other nations around you, not building up human
- 7:03flourishing, but bringing human destruction and loss of life so
- 7:07as to better enrich and empower yourself.
- 7:10God says there is going to be ultimate punishment for this
- 7:15verse #12 I will make a human more scarce than fine gold and
- 7:19mankind more rare than the gold of Ophir.
- 7:23Here there is no one. It's not just OK, well, one king
- 7:27is going to go away. And it's, it's not all that bad.
- 7:31No, God is dealing with all human evil.
- 7:34And when that day comes, that ultimate day of the Lord, may
- 7:38you and I be found safe in Christ Jesus.
- 7:42May we not be those that have snubbed our nose at God?
- 7:47Verse #13 Therefore I will make the heavens tremble, and the
- 7:52earth will shake from its foundations at the wrath of
- 7:55Yahweh of heaven's armies on the day of His burning anger.
- 8:00You can think even of what John wrote about the great
- 8:03earthquake. The the wrath of the Lamb is
- 8:06what He calls that particular thing at the end of time as
- 8:11Jesus returns, and in his return as he speaks, there is a shaking
- 8:17of all creation that even the heavens and the earth are not
- 8:24secure in the light of the One who is ultimate stability and
- 8:30security. And all that was tainted by sin
- 8:33and broken is done away, and the new is put into its place, the
- 8:39new, the whole. What will be forever.
- 8:43Who were summer 14? Like wandering gazelles and like
- 8:46sheep without a shepherd, Each one will turn to his own people.
- 8:49Each one will flee to his own land.
- 8:51Whoever is found will be stabbed, and whoever is caught
- 8:55will die by the sword. Their children will be dashed to
- 8:59pieces before their eyes. Their houses will be looted and
- 9:03their wives raped. Now, as we read those verses, if
- 9:06we think like, Oh yeah, this is just God's idea of a perfect
- 9:13punishment for these people, we can go, well, that seems really
- 9:15unjust. But here, as God is describing,
- 9:19yes, and some cosmic terms, the downfall of Babylon itself in
- 9:24some ways that even as I've been talking through are reminiscent
- 9:27of the great end of time itself. This is also human armies who
- 9:33are going to do to Babylon what Babylon did to them.
- 9:37Can I ask you, do you think that the way that you interact with
- 9:41other people, would you want them to treat you that way?
- 9:44Would you want to be forgiven as much as as you forgive others?
- 9:48Would you want to be talked about by others the way that you
- 9:51talk about them? Let's remember what Paul tells
- 9:55us in Galatians 6. Don't be deceived.
- 9:58God is not mocked for whatever a person sows that they will also
- 10:03reap. So here the Babylonians being
- 10:07rapists and child murderers, the other nations would eagerly do
- 10:12that back to Babylon in a show of force and strength and show,
- 10:16Oh yes, this is the way that you treated us.
- 10:20And so we're going to be mad against you.
- 10:21We went over what is that Psalm 137 or so that talks about the
- 10:29Babylonians forcing the Jewish people to sing as they're in
- 10:34exile and the Jewish people are like, listen, happy will be the
- 10:38person that treats you as you have treated us.
- 10:42So that's you need to keep that in mind when you read through
- 10:48this. This is not God's like perfect
- 10:50desire of what he wants. This is the natural consequence
- 10:55of human evil in sin. Sin only ever begets more sin
- 11:01against you. Verse #17 look, I'm stirring up
- 11:04the Medes against them. This would be the Medo Persian
- 11:07Empire, he says, who cannot be bought off with silver and who
- 11:11have no desire for gold. These are not mercenaries.
- 11:13They have a personal vendetta against Babylon and they would
- 11:17come and destroy them. You can listen in our Tabernacle
- 11:20Baptist Essex sermon podcast. I went over Daniel one through
- 11:2712, Daniel one through 6 back in October and November of 2024,
- 11:37and then Daniel 7 through 12 last July.
- 11:41And I believe it's Daniel four that talks specifically.
- 11:45It might be Daniel five that talks about the night that
- 11:50Babylon fell and Daniel as he prophesized even to those kings
- 11:55and to let him know like hey, this is coming from God and so
- 11:59there's nothing that you can do. And Daniels prophecies came true
- 12:04just as you know, hundred 150 years before Isaiah had
- 12:08prophesied this very thing would happen verse #18 their bows will
- 12:12cut young men to pieces. They'll have no compassion on
- 12:15offspring. They will not look with pity on
- 12:18children. This would also then mean that
- 12:20the Medo Persian Empire as they continued in pursuit of violence
- 12:26and death and destruction that they would also need to be
- 12:29punished as well that that comes later.
- 12:32But I just want you to know God's not like signing off like,
- 12:34Oh yes, this is all wonderful. I'm I'm so happy with this.
- 12:37God uses human will to accomplish his divine will in
- 12:46such a way that God does not ever command evil to be done.
- 12:51He never condones evil. All evil must be punished.
- 12:55But even through our brokenness, God is still able to 'cause
- 13:00there to be justice and righteousness, freedom for
- 13:05people. And that is a super, super
- 13:08complicated intermix. If you guys ever want just a
- 13:12super deep dive on this, you can read the book Providence
- 13:15Providence by John Piper. It's like a 700 page book and he
- 13:20dives a lot into the sovereignty of God.
- 13:23So I encourage you to give that a read through if you want to
- 13:26dive into that even more. Verse #19 in Babylon, the jewel
- 13:30of the kingdoms, the glory of the pride of the Chaldeans will
- 13:34be like Sodom and Gomorrah when God overthrew them.
- 13:38It'll never be inhabited or lived, and from generation to
- 13:41generation a nomad will not pitch his tent there, and
- 13:44shepherds will not let their flocks rest there.
- 13:47But desert creatures will lie down there, and owls will fill
- 13:50the houses. Ostriches will dwell there, and
- 13:53wild goats will leap about. Hyenas will howl in the
- 13:56fortresses and jackals in the luxurious palaces.
- 14:00Babylon's time is almost up. Her days are almost over.
- 14:05So here in especially verses 20 through 22, here's a poetic
- 14:11rendering of this. It's not God saying, all right,
- 14:15literally no one will ever live in this city or like city area
- 14:22again. And so if someone ever does live
- 14:25in that city area of where Babylon once was, boom, you
- 14:29know, the Bible's not true. Gotcha.
- 14:31No, this is poetic language saying there is not going to be
- 14:36a continuing civilization that is there when that destruction
- 14:41occurs. It's going to be a complete and
- 14:43total destruction. Like it would be years and
- 14:46years, I think a couple centuries, if I recall
- 14:48correctly, before Babylon would have any sort of rebuilding
- 14:53done. And so just wanted to highlight
- 14:56that there. And then you have these
- 14:57wilderness creatures in verses 21 and 22, the desert creatures
- 15:03that like in the sea, where I've mentioned before, actually even
- 15:06in Isaiah, the Leviathan, the sea Dragons, the sea monsters
- 15:12that the ancient Near Eastern peoples had in their mythology
- 15:18that like those things were the ocean bad guys seeking to
- 15:24destroy all life and to live in a, you know, chaos world, if you
- 15:28will, overflowing with water where no humans can live.
- 15:32The flip side of that is the wilderness where it is too dry
- 15:37to live. So you have, if you will,
- 15:40Genesis 1 and 2, Genesis 1, there's too much water
- 15:43everywhere, so there can't be life.
- 15:44So God brings the land from the water.
- 15:47Or Genesis 2, you have a wilderness where it's too dry to
- 15:50live. And so God brings these streams
- 15:54and he brings a garden that's there.
- 15:58So it's those types of things that happen.
- 16:00And here these are wilderness creatures that communicate a
- 16:04place where it is either impossible or incredibly hard to
- 16:09live in that place. And so these are the kinds of
- 16:11things. So even in the rest of Scripture
- 16:13when you hear about owls, ostriches, wild goats, hyenas,
- 16:17jackals, which if I remember correctly, well, I don't have
- 16:22my, I don't have my Bible study program pulled up at the moment.
- 16:26So I will tell you, look up verse #22 in some Bible study
- 16:32software and look at what that underlying Hebrew word there is
- 16:37in for jackals in verse #22 It's kind of a fun rabbit hole to go
- 16:42down. So what do we take from this
- 16:44passage? This is the condemnation of
- 16:46Babylon. We are not Babylon.
- 16:49Babylon was destroyed long ago. What do we take from this?
- 16:51God is true to His word. So you can believe Him and you
- 16:56should obey and follow God because one day ultimate justice
- 17:01is coming. And so because of that, we want
- 17:04to be safe. And the way to be safe is to be
- 17:07on God's side. How do you get on God's side?
- 17:09Do you have to be perfect? Do you have to give money?
- 17:13Do you have to have perfect attendance?
- 17:15What do you have to do to get on God's side?
- 17:17Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved and your
- 17:21household. That is the the testimony of
- 17:24scripture. Those that have placed their
- 17:26faith in Jesus, choosing His way instead of their own, will find
- 17:30refuge and safety. Also, God will deal with evil
- 17:36and he will deal with it proportionately.
- 17:40He is not indifferent to those that have harmed you, those that
- 17:44have harmed your loved ones. And whether met out on Christ on
- 17:49the cross or on the person that sinned, God will have ultimate
- 17:55eternal justice levied out on humanity.
- 17:59And then also realize that this world's kingdoms will not last.
- 18:03They will all come to an end one day.
- 18:06And so put your faith in God's Kingdom.
- 18:09Live for His nation, don't live for your own thankful to be here
- 18:15in America. I've so many wonderful freedoms
- 18:18that that I'm thankful to the Lord for and I want to make sure
- 18:22that I'm using all of my rights and privileges while I while I
- 18:27have them and but that does not mean that my ultimate hope is in
- 18:32America. American can do whatever it
- 18:34wants. God's Kingdom will last forever.
- 18:38And so I don't have to fear man. I don't have to fear what might
- 18:42happen in my nation because I know that I am secure in my God.
- 18:46And though Babylon is destroyed, God's Kingdom is everlasting.
- 18:51So live for the Kingdom of heaven.
- 18:54Don't live for Babylon today. Don't live for empire.
- 18:57Don't live for the kingdoms and politics and all of those things
- 19:01of our world today. Thanks for tuning in.
- 19:04Hope you have a wonderful day. See you next episode for Isaiah
- 19:0814.
