- 0:16Music. Hello and welcome back to the
- 0:21Easy Double Podcast, episode 9. I'm joined this week by two
- 0:26guests, the one who's been here for the past two weeks, Dean
- 0:30Menzies. How are you?
- 0:31Good. Thanks mate, Yep not doing well.
- 0:34Enjoying the extra long weekend for me.
- 0:37Closing in now, what are we t -? 5 days?
- 0:41Six days? Let's not think about it.
- 0:43That's it. It's coming up fast.
- 0:44And we have the returning wanderer, the Irish Traveller.
- 0:49He's been up north, he's been down South.
- 0:50It's been the tent, it's been the campervan.
- 0:52No air con. You survived.
- 0:54Welcome back, Owen. Hello lads, how are you guys
- 0:57doing? Doing well.
- 0:58Good mate. Guess you've you're a little bit
- 1:01more cultured now. You've been up North Queensland,
- 1:03seen some things. Yeah, I've seen some crocodiles,
- 1:06seen some dingoes and they've seen a sea lion down in our
- 1:10sprints. So yeah, I've seen a lot in the
- 1:13last two weeks. Things you can get up to when
- 1:17you're and you forget that running isn't quite everything
- 1:20in my thing. Literally.
- 1:22Literally. Yeah.
- 1:23I enjoyed my annual leave, but now I'm ready to get back into
- 1:27the running, to be honest. And that's it.
- 1:29Yeah, and just a welcome to the listeners to join us on this
- 1:32final episode before the Ballarat Marathon this weekend.
- 1:37Hopefully we're going to go through some Boston results from
- 1:40last night. We're going to preview what
- 1:43London might look like, go through the fields there, who
- 1:45we're going to be keen to follow.
- 1:47And we're going to hand the reins over to Owen to do a bit
- 1:51of AQA for myself and Dean ahead of the race in terms of what our
- 1:56preps look like, maybe what our goals are, what the taper looks
- 1:59like, and just whatever else Owen's going to come up with.
- 2:03The we've got a bit of a shoe watch because there's been a few
- 2:06exciting new releases in the shoe space recently.
- 2:10Owen's going to take us through that.
- 2:11And then we're going to fire through some listener questions.
- 2:15So let's get into it then. Boston Marathon last night, I
- 2:18know we shared the link on the story.
- 2:20How did you guys get on trying to watch that one?
- 2:23Yeah, I watched the first, I want to say 20 kilometers, and
- 2:28then it was getting a bit late and I got tired.
- 2:30So as soon as that John career sort of made that break, I was
- 2:34like, OK, nobody's catching this guy, I'll just go to bed and get
- 2:39the results in the morning. But yeah, I like just judging by
- 2:43the crowds, like it looked unbelievable, like it'd be like
- 2:47an unbelievable race to run. And but yeah, what do you think?
- 2:51Think. Yeah, I was funny.
- 2:53I was pretty similar in terms of I conked out around halfway I
- 2:56think in terms of I just fell asleep.
- 2:58But it was cool in terms of the the pack, like what was there
- 3:04about 16 guys in the lead pack and there was sort of that
- 3:09included like a couple of Americans and Aussie and the
- 3:12Canadian, which was good. So it wasn't just entirely
- 3:15dominated by East Africans, which was, which was, which was
- 3:19cool and it was fast, which I thought was, which was exciting
- 3:23because you're sort of, they were sort of on track for some
- 3:26pretty quick times, albeit that the second-half I think's a bit
- 3:28Hillier. Probably the difficult part was
- 3:31it's sort of you sort of don't get to follow the race in its
- 3:34entirety. You know, it sort of cuts away
- 3:36between like the around that time sort of from about 15 KS
- 3:41through to maybe 25 KS. Like the, the wheelies are sort
- 3:45of front and center at the same time.
- 3:48And it's sort of it's hard because you got 4 races all
- 3:51running at the same time and you sort of you sort of don't want
- 3:54to, you sort of know it like an attack is going to be made at
- 3:56some point. You don't want to miss it.
- 3:57But you sort of they don't do a great job of split screening or
- 4:01letting you sort of peel off just to see what's going on in
- 4:04all the races at the same time. So sort of made it a little bit
- 4:07hard to follow because they were trying to do each race justice,
- 4:09but you can't do them when they're all sort of exciting and
- 4:11parallel. So that was the only difficult
- 4:13part. But that stream was a good
- 4:15quality stream given and that otherwise we you had to what,
- 4:17pay for a flow track subscription in order to watch
- 4:20it. So yeah, that was just a couple
- 4:22of my thoughts. Yeah, I was the same.
- 4:24So I felt like you could, you could see what they were trying
- 4:26to do by giving like the male wheelchair some airtime, the
- 4:30female wheelchair some airtime, the lads elite and the women
- 4:33elite. But yeah, it was just, they
- 4:36literally were switching like every freaking like 5 minutes.
- 4:38And then when the wheelchair is finished, then I sort of
- 4:40concentrate obviously more on the running.
- 4:42But yeah, it was just annoying at the start.
- 4:43But like you can't sort of complain because that's sort of
- 4:46what you, what you want. Like give everyone want a little
- 4:48bit of airtime. Exactly.
- 4:49Yeah, it was annoying though, except that got the other a car
- 4:52up with the lead packed and then they let you had a guy like
- 4:55commentating from the back of that lead car watching it all
- 4:58unfold. And you see in at first when
- 5:01they went to him, you're like, shit, this is going to be like
- 5:04some very good coverage if he's literally just there analyzing
- 5:07all these moves as they're happening.
- 5:09And I mean, they hardly went to and really did they went when it
- 5:13started breaking up like whatever it was 2530 K.
- 5:16But then flicking back doing charity interviews and you're
- 5:19like, come on, I want to know what like this guy's splitting
- 5:22up front and see who's dropping and stuff.
- 5:24But yeah, so that's when I fell asleep as well, to be fair,
- 5:27because like saying to DNLE, you have so much excitement to watch
- 5:31it and like you've got these back stories of Clayton Young,
- 5:34Connor Manse and Rory Linklater and stuff.
- 5:37So you feel like you've got a bit of AI mean they don't know
- 5:39that you've got you think you've got a relationship with these
- 5:42athletes, but you know what I mean?
- 5:43You've you've followed their journey And then yeah, you're
- 5:47basically all you're buzzed about is what the finishing time
- 5:50was because you don't know kind of how it's unfolded there.
- 5:53And then unfortunately and. Even like that.
- 5:56Goes. With who was Pat Tiernan?
- 5:59At one stage he was up at the front, then a cut off to
- 6:02something else. And then the next time you see
- 6:04them, he's like out the back, like jogging, like, yeah, he's
- 6:07just totally lost, Like, oh, what happened there?
- 6:09No, they've done the best they got, I think.
- 6:11How good does he look, by the way?
- 6:13Because he for a big guy, he just looks like he's absolutely
- 6:16jogging. So when he was up the front, he
- 6:19looked like he was cruising and then he looks exactly the same
- 6:23once he'd been spat off the back, but he still goes on to
- 6:26run. What?
- 6:27I mean, we need to actually say what the results were in a
- 6:29minute. But Patty and he finished 11th
- 6:32in a 208 and it looked like he like kind of had a bit of a
- 6:36difficult time once he came off the back of the passport.
- 6:38Clearly he held on incredibly strongly.
- 6:41One for those taller runners out there.
- 6:43Yeah, inspiration for us giraffes.
- 6:45Yeah, exactly. I know the.
- 6:48Thing and so let's let's do the results.
- 6:51Then we had John Korea of Kenya. I think is it you as Kenyan
- 6:55athlete, One in two O 445. So he made his move 2530 K maybe
- 7:02just before the hills did me and just basically got rid of
- 7:06everyone else. So don't know if they
- 7:07deliberately didn't go or they just physically couldn't.
- 7:10But once he gapped them, that was it.
- 7:12Alfonse Simbu in second in two O 5 O four.
- 7:16And yeah, they had a bit of a Sprint finish to the line for
- 7:192nd and 3rd, but Cibrian Kotut was 2O5O4 as well.
- 7:26They just got rid the Connor Man Sees Forth and 2/05/08.
- 7:30So they were like a group of three when they for a while all
- 7:33battling out for the podium positions and it came down to
- 7:35the very end. Unfortunately, Mr. Months got
- 7:39the short straw there, Mr. Podium.
- 7:41And then the other interesting finish was Rory Linklater.
- 7:44The Canadian and Clayton Young had a bit of a battle coming up
- 7:48towards the final stretch and Rory Linklater just got the
- 7:51better album to finish in 6th. And I think what I've seen a
- 7:54clip of Clayton today saying Rory pulled up alongside him,
- 7:59whatever it was about a case ago and he said to him, let's time
- 8:02go. So that's pretty cool.
- 8:05That's good. I feel like like that Rory link
- 8:08letter, did he, did he run Maragami or something around?
- 8:12He was in Japan around that time, wasn't he?
- 8:14He. Ran.
- 8:15Yeah, he ran it. And I don't think he ran as well
- 8:18as what he raced just on the weekend, did he?
- 8:20So this was like a pretty, I don't know if you call it a
- 8:22breakthrough, but a pretty impressive performance because I
- 8:25don't, I mean, he certainly didn't place as high as Clayton
- 8:28Young in the in the Olympic city.
- 8:30No, but is there a new coach now all?
- 8:32Right. Same sponsor though, hey?
- 8:34So yeah, still piano. Yeah, and were they both Pat and
- 8:37Rory in the new Puma shoes? Yeah, and what was it, Rory?
- 8:41And Rory, Connor Manson, Clayton Young, they all went to that BYU
- 8:46school in America. So if we flick to the women's, I
- 8:50mean, we would have seen as much of this as we would the men's,
- 8:53but I guess it was a group of them.
- 8:55Was it 5 of them and then eventually 4 And I, I fell
- 8:59asleep. I didn't see the finish of that.
- 9:01But Sharon one in 2/17/22 from Helen O'berry, who I think was
- 9:09potentially the favorite because she was on for the hat trick,
- 9:13the three piece. So she had won in the past two
- 9:15years back-to-back and she ran 21741, which I think is actually
- 9:20the quickest time she's run there, despite the fact she's
- 9:23won it twice before. And then there was a British
- 9:27woman, Kali Thackery, who was also at Maragami, ran 2/22/38
- 9:32down in 6th. So she's actually the second
- 9:35fastest Brit of all time behind Paula Radcliffe.
- 9:39So I think she's potentially the, well, not the next big
- 9:43thing she is, she's already the big thing the.
- 9:47Interest you want Sharon Lochetti and Hung Weary.
- 9:49They actually trained together so they're actually like mates
- 9:53outside of running as on school. They were saying, I think there
- 9:56was a few elbows. Yeah, that Kelly Tucker, she ran
- 9:59Maragami as well, did she? Yeah, she she'd be busy.
- 10:02She ran 6658 I think. The the women's winner, I think
- 10:08like Helen O'bury and sort of beating her in a Sprint the last
- 10:12few times up until the most their most recent encounter,
- 10:15right? And so I think the thought was
- 10:18that Helen had gone back to is it Nairobi or something and done
- 10:21a big training block. And that's what a coach was
- 10:23saying. And so it was maybe tipped to be
- 10:26in shape to get it done. But yeah, it was good racing.
- 10:29It's always a good finish that sort of, you know, it's like
- 10:31slightly uphill sort of finish is always makes for a good
- 10:35spectacle. I think that Chairman Okelli 1,
- 10:37she's after running best and like like four or five Times Now
- 10:40and she's finished. She's never finished blow for
- 10:42something crazy like that. Yeah, yeah.
- 10:44Course specialist. Well, Speaking of how good Pat
- 10:47Tennan looked, when I was watching Helen O'berry, I was
- 10:51like, shit, she looks like she's in trouble because her elbows
- 10:55are everywhere and she's almost going sideways across the road
- 10:58as much as she is forwards. But it's clearly very efficient
- 11:02for her, which doesn't look very good.
- 11:04Feel like Paula Radcliffe looks like it burning a lot more
- 11:07energy than someone like Pat Tiernan, but obviously works.
- 11:12So that is, did we have anything else trying to think maybe
- 11:16there's some other talking points about Boston.
- 11:18So I thought the coverage. Yeah, I think, I mean, the the
- 11:21guys were in those new shoes, weren't they?
- 11:24The Puma athletes, which we might talk about later.
- 11:27Yeah, it would be nice to get a get a feel for what they thought
- 11:31of them. And actually the two lads who
- 11:33came second and third were in the new Adidas Evo 2, so that
- 11:38really light one that you use in a marathon, once they're in the
- 11:41second version of that, apparently it's cool.
- 11:43It's funny isn't it, Because you see those photos of like the
- 11:47shoes people were wearing on the podiums of major marathons and
- 11:50stuff. And it genuinely does influence
- 11:52how you think. Because I looked at that one,
- 11:55the guy who won had ASICS on and then second and third were in
- 11:59the Adidas as you just said. And it made me think, shit, no
- 12:02ones wearing alpha flies there. But like, I feel when, when the
- 12:08Super shoes first came out, like everything was around Nike,
- 12:11wasn't it? They were like leading the
- 12:12market. But now all the brands have got
- 12:15a super shoe that they can offer and they're all very similar.
- 12:17But it's purely down to like what's most economical for you.
- 12:21So like, all three of us could genuinely suit a different brand
- 12:24of shoe, wouldn't we? Yeah, you've got to test them,
- 12:26got to buy them all, unfortunately.
- 12:29You know, when I was looking at the the history of Boston or
- 12:32like the past winners, I've seen a guy on there and I knew this
- 12:36already called Jeff Smith. And he used, he used to run for
- 12:41Liverpool Harriers and he won Boston back-to-back in 84 and
- 12:4585. In between, Salzar won it in 82
- 12:48and Robert De Costello won it in 86.
- 12:52And this guy from Liverpool Harriers won it twice in
- 12:55between. It's pretty mental.
- 12:57So between him and Johnny Miller, who's doing London,
- 13:02another British athlete who runs for these new bounce Manchester,
- 13:07but his club potentially as Liverpool Harry's as well.
- 13:10I don't think I'll ever be getting anywhere near any area
- 13:13records, unfortunately. You.
- 13:15Never know. Need some more development and
- 13:18super shoes I think so then we've got running news is quite
- 13:22light so we're going to talk about London and what's upcoming
- 13:25there. The unfortunate thing is, as
- 13:27we've had the past, I think it was over the weekend it was
- 13:29announced, wasn't it the two major withdrawals and Perez
- 13:33chapter chair who's the reigning London champion and Olympic gold
- 13:37medalist, she's withdrawn due to an ankle injury.
- 13:40And then the girl who brings so much hype and talk and
- 13:44discussion around every Chapman, Chapman, get it, the current
- 13:48world record holder and sub 210 from Chicago last year, she's
- 13:53withdrawn due to not being in the right place mentally, which
- 13:58I don't know. I am fair from that that there's
- 14:00a lot of pressure on her to run very close to 210 again because
- 14:04of all, I don't know if you call them accusations or discussions
- 14:08around the legitimacy of her Chicago run.
- 14:11And she's obviously ran a 10K and a half marathon since, which
- 14:16people have highlighted don't stack up anywhere near a 210
- 14:19marathon. So that's a shame.
- 14:23I find it annoying because like, like, like going by how right
- 14:27she's pulled out 210 and her last few races have been
- 14:30absolute mock. So it's like she was taking the
- 14:33drugs and now she's like there's all hype around her, so she's
- 14:36cut off them basically. I don't know.
- 14:39Yeah, it's annoying. Got the e-mail through about
- 14:42make sure you're around after the race because anti dope and
- 14:45they'll be there and she's got no yeah, I'm withdrawing.
- 14:48Thank you. But the field is still pretty
- 14:52insane. You've got a SEFA who's ran
- 14:5621153. So is that right, 21153 yeah,
- 15:01yeah. You've won Berlin in 22 and 23,
- 15:05and 2nd in London in 24 and silver in Paris.
- 15:09You've got Stefan Hassan. Obviously her reputation kind of
- 15:12goes before her, but she's run 230 in 44.
- 15:15She won three medals in Paris and she's won London and Chicago
- 15:20in 23. And then there's like the kind
- 15:24of the unknown African people who aren't like quite at the top
- 15:29just kind of get passed by, don't they?
- 15:31So there's like this four of that African women who are sub
- 15:34220 still. And then you've got an American
- 15:38girl who I haven't heard of it before, Susanna Sullivan, she's
- 15:41run 22156. And then from a British point of
- 15:45view, you've got Charlotte Perdue who's been knocking
- 15:48around for a little while, been in and out of Olympic teams run
- 15:51222, Seagal, Rose Harvey 223, Philly Bowden who's got a big
- 15:57presence on YouTube 225. And then Irish Mccolgan who's
- 16:01the national record holder over 5010 thousand and a half
- 16:05marathon making their debut. So the field is still pretty
- 16:10exciting. You'd wonder why your own Cali
- 16:13tackery didn't do like her home race like London and pick Boston
- 16:18when realistic like that Boston time you can't even count it
- 16:21towards anything because it's in that downhill course if you
- 16:23think she get more money running in London.
- 16:26Yeah, that doesn't make yeah, unless there was some sort of
- 16:29connection like a, you know, agent had a connection with the
- 16:33race. So she got a good appearance fee
- 16:34or maybe she's had the option to race London in the past and
- 16:37wanted a different challenge. But the natural option you would
- 16:40think would be would be would be London for sure do.
- 16:44You know if she trains with a group I.
- 16:45Don't know much about I. Think she's based in the US?
- 16:48Well, then, that's probably why. Like, did you see that guy
- 16:52Charles Hicks? He's been in the NCAA system for
- 16:55a while, hasn't he? And he's changing allegiance to
- 16:58be a US representative, isn't he?
- 17:01Is he? Yeah.
- 17:02Because he would have won them, you would have won European
- 17:05cross country there a couple years ago and done that.
- 17:07The A1 or the under €23 across a few, a couple?
- 17:11Of times, I think, yeah. So he ran this, he ran this 10
- 17:14mile the other week and he posted like something along the
- 17:18lines of it being an unofficial national record because he
- 17:22hasn't got his nationality recognized yet and he's still
- 17:25subject to approval as to whether it will count, I think
- 17:28towards the US 10 mile record. But I think he as well, he, he's
- 17:34chosen to, to represent the US due to problems or lack of
- 17:39support or whatever from British athletics, which kind of says a
- 17:43lot in itself. And maybe that's why Carly
- 17:46Thackery, that's where where I'm linking it to is choosing to do
- 17:49these US based races because she's kind of been based over
- 17:53there for a while. So maybe she doesn't get the
- 17:55same offers from London as some of the like British based
- 17:58athletes do. So she's just choosing to settle
- 18:00over there. It's sort of like the same
- 18:02situation with the soccer players who have like English
- 18:06grandparents. They all just use Ireland for
- 18:09like the underage and then when they get half decent they just
- 18:11go to England because they've got a chance of winning so.
- 18:14And I don't think we covered it. Did Ben O'Connor make an
- 18:17announcement about pulling out of the national team?
- 18:20Because it was going to be. Was it?
- 18:22He had to fund his own trip like British Athletics weren't going
- 18:26to tip in the cost to cover his travel or expenses related to
- 18:30was it world champs or something?
- 18:32That European Rd. Yeah, I think it was, yeah.
- 18:34There's European road running. What was that?
- 18:37The one what's just been with Alfie Mann?
- 18:39Alfie Mann. Thor ran.
- 18:40Yeah, yeah, yeah. So yeah.
- 18:43I mean, that was like people were not criticizing him, but
- 18:46saying like, Oh yeah, it's easy for you to do because you've got
- 18:48like so many vests. But I don't think that's why
- 18:51he's doing it. He's doing it more so from like
- 18:53coming from a good place, isn't he trying to set a precedent
- 18:55that athletes should not have to cover their own costs?
- 18:58That should come from like BA in the first instance, British
- 19:01Athletics or the athlete sponsor.
- 19:04But then the fact that people end up wearing the vest in his
- 19:07place anyway just kind of undermines his, umm, his
- 19:10efforts. Unfortunately.
- 19:12I wouldn't going back to your Irish grandparents or English
- 19:15grandparents think, who is it? Who's it's Grealish isn't it?
- 19:18He's hated for it. And there's a.
- 19:20Couple of others at the minute. Declan Rice, Yeah.
- 19:23Yeah, like we'd actually be half decent if all them boys play for
- 19:26Ireland, but. Yeah, I had no idea they were
- 19:28Irish, man. Yeah, they represent was it.
- 19:30Yeah, I wouldn't mind. Declan Rice played a senior
- 19:34international friendly for Ireland and then a couple of
- 19:37weeks later but because there was a friendly it didn't count
- 19:39as a cap and then he went over to to England.
- 19:42Wasn't crazy. I think is it like the guy the
- 19:46like Rice and green Leicester? They were born in England but
- 19:49then maybe when they're younger they're not at like the
- 19:52forefront of England's books, so they find some sort of Irish
- 19:55connection to get into the national team.
- 19:57Then they come really good and they're like, I want to play for
- 20:00England because they can. That's it, like they actually
- 20:02sound English, like they are English but they've like Irish
- 20:06grandparents so they use Irish for the underage system and then
- 20:09when they get half decent. But I wouldn't mind Ireland.
- 20:12Played England there a couple of I think it was a couple of
- 20:14months ago now. And then who scores rice and
- 20:17greenish? So there's killings of the game.
- 20:21Right, That like, yeah, anyway, we'll leave football.
- 20:26This is different subjects altogether, isn't it?
- 20:29Getting back to London to talk about the men's field, because
- 20:33this has a lot of significance. We've got Jacob Kaplimo making
- 20:38his marathon debut who's the half marathon controversial
- 20:42world record holder who ran 5642 in Barcelona, which for context
- 20:48is obscenely fast and potentially points towards, and
- 20:52he have a dip at the two hours barrier.
- 20:55That's what all the talk has been since he ran that, hasn't
- 20:58it? You've got I'll just run through
- 21:00the field and then you can offer me your thoughts or opinions.
- 21:03You've got Alexandra Moussao, who's also referred to as
- 21:07Munyao. He's the reigning champion.
- 21:09He's run 203 eleven before. You've got Kip Chogi, whose
- 21:13reputation goes before him again.
- 21:15He's the second fastest all time, two time gold marathon,
- 21:19gold medal in the marathon in Tokyo and Rio.
- 21:22He's won Berlin five times. He's won London four times,
- 21:26Tokyo and Chicago, so like people I don't know what to
- 21:29spend their life but spend a lot of time chasing these six star
- 21:33medals. And Kip Jogi's almost got 6
- 21:35golden stars while he's coming to Sydney as well later in the
- 21:38year potentially. To top it up, you've got
- 21:40Sebastian, Sebastian Sawway who's run 202, which is the
- 21:44fourth fastest all time. You've then got 18 other
- 21:48athletes, just random Africans, couple of Europeans in there who
- 21:52are sub 210 including Ye. Is it your ma that's funny.
- 21:57Crippa, the Italian guy who's 206 Andy Buchanan, who's the
- 22:02Australian national record holder in 2:06 and he's been
- 22:06pretty have been about wanting to run even faster than that.
- 22:09And then from a British perspective, you've got
- 22:12unfortunate male Crest dropped out.
- 22:14So the top seeded Brit is Mohammed Mohammed 207 guy and
- 22:19you've got Phil Sassman 208 and Johnny Mellor who mentioned
- 22:22before 209 and then Alex Yee making his debut.
- 22:26Who's the gold medal in the triathlon from Paris?
- 22:31So yeah, talk to me about that. I don't know who to pick as a
- 22:34favorite. I mean, Jacob Kibleno's time,
- 22:37you know, like the double plus 7 is pretty squarely on 7 is on
- 22:42two hours, so that, you know, you'd have to think he'll at
- 22:46least be with the group for a long time.
- 22:49But running a good half versus running a good full marathon
- 22:52doesn't always equate like there was a world champion from
- 22:56Eritrea, world half marathon champion.
- 22:58I think he had won like 7 world half marathon titles, perhaps
- 23:03Zeronate Tedesse. He was part of that Nike
- 23:07Breaking 2 project with Kip Chogi and Lily said Decisa
- 23:12Ethiopian guy. And he was he sort of was the
- 23:16biggest sort of underperformer of the three.
- 23:18Like he had certain like they all got selected based on like
- 23:21supreme Physiology. But he sort of seemed to
- 23:24struggle to convert that from 1/2 marathon to a marathon.
- 23:27So I still have a question mark as to whether or not, you know,
- 23:30how fast he'll sort of run over the marathon.
- 23:33So I think just talking it aloud, I'm maybe not going to
- 23:37tip him and I might go sort of last year's winner perhaps is to
- 23:43go back-to-back. That might be my my, my tip.
- 23:46How about you guys? I skipped over Kenny Super Keely
- 23:50as well. Doesn't deserve skipping over.
- 23:52He's third fastest all time in the 201, but his form hasn't
- 23:57been real of recent. Has it?
- 24:02Sorry everyone. And I probably, I'm going to tip
- 24:05them that Salway guy. And I think this he ran his very
- 24:09first marathon. Was it late?
- 24:11Did he win Valencia? And.
- 24:13Yes, that was his first one. So, and for this second time
- 24:17around, I think he's only going to get better.
- 24:19So yeah, I'm going to put the house on what?
- 24:23Yeah, he won Valencia 202, so I'm going to back him for the to
- 24:29get the dub. OK, I'll not that I actually
- 24:32think he will win, but just to keep three different selections,
- 24:35I'll go Kip limo to make it exciting, although I don't
- 24:39reckon he's going to go anywhere near 2 hours.
- 24:41Even if he did win it, I reckon he'll actually half be wanting
- 24:45it to start pretty slow just to like remove that question
- 24:48straight away, because then he can actually just race, race it
- 24:52properly. Carney, he's probably feels like
- 24:54a lot of pressure to run really fast.
- 24:56I mean, he's probably also mature enough to put that to one
- 24:59side and just run his own race. But still, all the talk since
- 25:03since that half marathon has been about breaking two hours,
- 25:06hasn't it? Yeah, and for the women's, I'm
- 25:08going to go for Stefan Hassan, where Eilish Mccarligan getting
- 25:12a notable mention. I think she's going to run well.
- 25:14She's going to be first British on.
- 25:16I'll I don't think I like Stefan Hassan.
- 25:19That's boring. But I don't know, I just feel
- 25:21like I like watching her race anyway, so I can't.
- 25:24I feel like I can't help but want to cheer for her anyway,
- 25:27and she's sort of class as well. I might just go for the first
- 25:31British Home, Charlotte Pergy, just for something for for a
- 25:34point of difference. Yeah, I was going to mention
- 25:36about Charlotte. I don't know if I'm right in
- 25:39saying this, but something tells me that she got snubbed for the
- 25:43Olympic selection last year. Like maybe got hard done by,
- 25:46like she had the time but didn't get chosen or there was a little
- 25:51bit of controversy around that. It kind of got drowned out by
- 25:54the controversy of the Australian selection.
- 25:56But I remember her being pretty confident she was going to go
- 26:01and I don't think that she did. I think she got injured with
- 26:04her. It was two weeks before she fell
- 26:06and hurt her knee on a long run. So she's never, I don't think
- 26:09she's ever had a British fest or something crazy like that.
- 26:11She's made, she's qualified for loads of championships and she's
- 26:13never worked out for her and so yeah, she was injured.
- 26:17She'll have fire in the belly racing around London.
- 26:20Well, also do we think you've got to ask the question if Andy
- 26:24saying he wants to run 205, do we think we're going to see a
- 26:27new Australian record? I mean, that's so fast.
- 26:32I don't know. You guys pick first, I'll pick
- 26:34last. I'm I'm checking the weather
- 26:36here, see what it's like in London.
- 26:37I think it looks it looks pretty good Chris.
- 26:40So that Norwegian guy keeps posting screenshots on his story
- 26:44everyday. Daily update of the weather.
- 26:47It looks pretty good. Yeah, Sunday morning, sunny.
- 26:49Is in Norwegian. Sunny and it doesn't get above
- 26:52what like 10:00? It's like 14°.
- 26:55The wind is like what? I don't know what how 1 meters
- 26:59per second converts to KS an hour or miles an hour, but it's
- 27:02like 1m per second. Yeah.
- 27:05I think. It's like 14 kilometers an hour.
- 27:08Is that bad? No, that's pretty good all.
- 27:10Right, It best not because that's what it's going to be in
- 27:13Ballarat. Lastly on on London, it's
- 27:20interesting that Brett Robinson is pacing as well.
- 27:24So I think he's he's got the job that Jack Rayner did have, but
- 27:27Jack's got injured and Brett's training didn't go as planned.
- 27:31So rather than racing, he's now pacing.
- 27:33And I think he's mentioned it was looking to be 6315, which is
- 27:39halfway towards the World Champs qualifying time of which is
- 27:432/06/30. So I imagine he'll have a big
- 27:46group with him, them they're all trying to hit that standard.
- 27:49I'll I'll say Andy doesn't run it.
- 27:51I just feel like it's so hard to run 2O5.
- 27:54What? What's per kilometer?
- 27:55What's that per kilometer? 250-8259.
- 27:58Because Alex Yi in his latest YouTube video, he don't like his
- 28:01last big marathon session and it was like a 30 kilometer and like
- 28:05race simulation and he was in three O fives.
- 28:08What that leave him up? Was it 210?
- 28:10229210 Yeah. That'd.
- 28:13Be an unbelievable day, yeah. I think he probably does that, I
- 28:16reckon. Yeah, I think 2:09 for for Alex.
- 28:20What do you guys think? Say Andy does do it just because
- 28:23of how confident he's been about it the whole time.
- 28:26I am with you in the sense that it sounds obscene that he's just
- 28:29going to run back-to-back Australian records.
- 28:31But yeah, I don't know. He seems supremely confident
- 28:35with it. I'm going to say he doesn't, and
- 28:37I'm going to say Alexei runs 210.
- 28:40Drawing a line under London, I did actually have a little bit
- 28:44of trivia which skipped over and it was in relation to Ballarat
- 28:47and London. So before we move on, do you
- 28:50know what the course record is for Boston for either the men's
- 28:53or the women's? Boston.
- 28:56Whatever the woman ran yesterday, 217.
- 29:01Oh shit, it actually is. Because.
- 29:03On my notes. As well I've written it.
- 29:06I've written the former one and put underneath.
- 29:09By the time this is released, could be old news.
- 29:12I don't know the lads. The men's one is from.
- 29:16Go on. It's not from that race where
- 29:19it's not from around 2005 when Ryan Hall ran the American
- 29:24record. He ran 204, didn't he there?
- 29:26And he was like 4, so maybe 203. You, you kind of close.
- 29:30Well, yeah, it's, it's 2O3O2 from 2011, but apparently it was
- 29:35a notoriously windy day with a tailwind.
- 29:40So yeah. But none of those records count
- 29:43towards world records or anything either because it's a
- 29:45point to point course and that downhill.
- 29:49And then just on the London one, I won't ask you, but the men's
- 29:53201 from Kipton and the women's is still Paula Radcliffe from
- 29:572003 to 15, which is obscene that that's still standing,
- 30:02isn't it? Is that a?
- 30:03Is that a women's only race as well?
- 30:06Women's only time, perhaps? Yeah, it was then, yeah.
- 30:09Yeah, yeah, so far. So Owen, do you want to on the
- 30:13course record conversation, moving over to Ballarat, there's
- 30:16only two course records eligible, which are the times
- 30:19from last year, 217 O 4 from Tom Decanto and on the women's side,
- 30:24the two 4055 from Ellen McCartney.
- 30:27So there's chance that those times might fall this weekend.
- 30:31But Owen, do you want to take us through some questions here?
- 30:35Or for you guys. Right.
- 30:37So I have never run a marathon before, so I'm actually pretty
- 30:41interested around how you guys answer this.
- 30:45The first one I sort of know the answer to.
- 30:46Like what? All right, I'll go Dean first,
- 30:49then Ryan. Yeah, just this is quick fire.
- 30:52All right. Just to reverse the places for
- 30:54Sunday. Right.
- 30:57What made you choose this race? Opportunity to race people on a
- 31:04quick course, in decent conditions and timed well off
- 31:08the back of having built up for 1/2 marathon right?
- 31:11Yeah, it just it fit really well into the schedule because like
- 31:16when when I joined runner with you guys, I was almost
- 31:20instructed that we were different the Maragami half in
- 31:23February. And then when I looked at kind
- 31:26of like the the race schedule for Australia, Ballarat just fit
- 31:29perfectly because I think it meant that we had maybe a 10 or
- 31:3211 week build coast of Maragami, so knew we'd be in good shape
- 31:37and then could just build on it. So it just made sense.
- 31:40And obviously they've been putting so much focus into
- 31:44making it a really good race from an athlete point of view.
- 31:46So right. Great answers guys, and Dean,
- 31:49what would a successful weekend look like for you?
- 31:53I think just executing sort of my race plan or sort of running
- 31:59to whatever my fitness potential is on the day.
- 32:02So that's sort of, that's sort of the goal is executing a good
- 32:05race and running to what I think I can, what I think I'm capable
- 32:08of. Right, very, very political
- 32:11answer that the in well played well, do you do you want to talk
- 32:17John the the competition on Instagram whilst you talk about
- 32:21yours there? Sorry, Ryan, say that again.
- 32:23Do you want to talk about the competition available on
- 32:26Instagram whilst you're on yours there?
- 32:29Yes, if you're talking about what my potential might be, if
- 32:32you want to speculate on that, Yeah, Vlad, it speaks nutrition
- 32:37or has kindly collaborated with the easy double pod and is doing
- 32:43a giveaway of is it 1000 grams of of big of his of the newly
- 32:53released bixed gels. So they're they've they're what
- 32:56we've been using or certainly I have been using a lot of in
- 33:00training up for Ballarat. They sort of recently released a
- 33:03caffeinated and non caffeinated gel has 40 grams of carbs per
- 33:07gel in it. Yeah, it's sort of palatable and
- 33:11and easy to ingest, which I've sucked down quite a few of and
- 33:14he's happily and he's giving away a very large quantity to
- 33:19whoever can correctly nearest a pin.
- 33:21I think in terms of what my goal time is, So if you find either
- 33:25me on Instagram or the easy double pod or BIX Australia,
- 33:30you'll be able to find the competition and and plug in a
- 33:33guest and nearest the pin gets the gets the chocolates or in
- 33:36this case the Bix Gels. I think there's there's like 150
- 33:40odd entries already, so people are just absolutely peppering
- 33:44the time. So by this, by the point of
- 33:46listening to this, you might be best just going for a bit of an
- 33:49outlier and hoping for the best. Hoping for a big blow up.
- 33:53And this little bonus? This is a bonus competition for
- 33:57the people who only listen. If you guess Ryan's and Dean's
- 34:01time, you get an almond croissant from Ryan and Dean and
- 34:05a coffee. That will be that will be handed
- 34:10over through Owen's purchase of the coffee that we're still
- 34:13waiting for. And as well, wrap up the bill.
- 34:17Yeah. Going back to the question, what
- 34:21does success look like for me this weekend?
- 34:24I mean I would, it's not even I would like to run APBI, think I
- 34:28have to run APB because my PB is 22759 so I'd like to take at
- 34:34least a couple of minutes off that.
- 34:37Probably somewhere in the range of 224 ish.
- 34:41I'm happy to say that and hopefully have a positive
- 34:45experience so that time doesn't come from a blower and that I'm
- 34:49not broken in half on Sunday afternoon or Monday.
- 34:52But if I am and I run a really good time, then I'll just deal
- 34:56with that. OK, this one I'm actually really
- 35:00interested in, as in because I've personally never done a
- 35:03carb load. So like Dean, how would you go
- 35:06about doing a carb carb load? When would it start?
- 35:10What carbs would you prefer over other carbs?
- 35:13Like what would you eat in the morning?
- 35:15I know the race is on, I think is it pretty early, 8:00 or
- 35:17something? So like, when would you eat your
- 35:20breakfast and all that sort of stuff?
- 35:22Yeah. So I'll probably start to be a
- 35:24little bit conscious on the Friday night.
- 35:28I know some people carb load for like 2 days prior, but for me, I
- 35:32normally just focus on the carb load, particularly on the
- 35:35Saturday. I'm not counting like grams of
- 35:41carbohydrates that I'm ingesting.
- 35:42But typically it's just foods that I sort of find easy to
- 35:48ingest. So things like rice cereal,
- 35:52bread, lollies and like sports drink like would be a, would be
- 35:59sort of the main sort of things that I'll have during the day.
- 36:01And then for dinner, it's normally, it's often a pizza if
- 36:05I'm in in ounces. If it's in Japan, then it'll be
- 36:08rice, but I'll normally have a pizza the night before.
- 36:11Not too many toppings. I think.
- 36:13I don't know if you want to have anything too fibrous because you
- 36:15want to your bows to empty in the morning.
- 36:19And then the morning of the race I'll normally have, I'll get up
- 36:22early, so at least three hours before the race and have a
- 36:25coffee and probably just like some toast with honey and banana
- 36:30on top. And then, yeah, slice or two of
- 36:32toast, sort of how we shared at Bunbury the other week, Crime.
- 36:36And then make sure we get in, yeah, get in a couple of coffee,
- 36:39get a jog in, get the bows moving.
- 36:42And I'll normally have like a gel, like a caffeinated gel as
- 36:45well before the race starts. And then and maybe some, you
- 36:50know, some sports drink, sip, sip on that in the morning of
- 36:54and then we'll just be sort of making sure I keep my nutrition
- 36:58in race nutrition, right? Yeah, In the past I've gone with
- 37:02the two days prior, so like the Ballarat, that would look like
- 37:05all of Friday, all of Saturday, and then obviously race Sunday.
- 37:10But just make it makes me feel a bit like shit, like it's meant
- 37:15to. But you stood on the start line
- 37:17like I'm in peak physical condition and through what
- 37:21you've consumed the past 48 hours, you feel like fat to
- 37:24space. Like you're so bloated and so
- 37:27lethargic and sluggish and you can't even get to sleep at night
- 37:30because you just got that much. You just got carbs pinging
- 37:33around your brain. But I'm flying Friday afternoon
- 37:40and then because of the time difference, it means that lowly
- 37:43of Perth that like 4:00 PM on Friday, don't actually get to
- 37:46Ballarat until like probably 11:00 PM by the time I drive
- 37:49there. So it's going to be hard to kind
- 37:52of carb load through that period.
- 37:53So I'll probably start Friday morning and kind of smash couple
- 37:58of breakfasts in a big lunch and then just kind of consume what I
- 38:01can throughout Friday evening, being conscious that it probably
- 38:05wouldn't be like true carb load amount.
- 38:08In the past, I have tried to measure it and I think kind of
- 38:12for my body weight up to around 700 grams of carb is ideal,
- 38:17which is when you do try and measure it out, it's a lot.
- 38:21So now I'm just not going to bother because I know that you
- 38:24can just pretty much eat freely, remove proteins, remove veg and
- 38:29fruit rarely isn't it supposedly.
- 38:31But I kind of like to keep a little bit of it in because it
- 38:33just it makes you feel a bit better.
- 38:35And I mean, when you're trying to eat that much food, it's nice
- 38:39to have, like, somewhat of a nutritious meal rather than
- 38:43just, like, a massive bowl of plain pasta.
- 38:46Some people eat, like, pasta with no sauce or rice with
- 38:49nothing else. And it's just like the car
- 38:51bloods, the fun part, Like, you have to have fun with it.
- 38:53So yeah, then I'll go all day Saturday.
- 38:56And then usually my, like, meal the night before is pasta with
- 39:01copious amounts of garlic bread. And then I just look to top it
- 39:04off with like Dean said this, like the Powerades.
- 39:08Usually I'd always just drink sugar free ones through being a
- 39:10bit of a freak, but you have to go for the sugared ones because
- 39:13that's where the carbs are. And snack wise, I like them.
- 39:17We had those pretzels, like the salted pretzels, they're just
- 39:20pure carb, like no fat, no protein.
- 39:23You can munch on them like a bag of family crisps.
- 39:25Nice. If I was doing it, I'd be
- 39:27straight into Woolies, getting them Biscoff hot cross buns.
- 39:32I just nailed it in. They're so good.
- 39:34But anyway, and fuelling strategy during the race.
- 39:38So like, are you guys going to be aiming to get like a certain
- 39:41amount of carbs in per hour? Do you tables with your own
- 39:44bottles? What's that sort of situation
- 39:46looking like for racing? Yeah, I've sort of been liaising
- 39:50a little bit with the race organizers to understand exactly
- 39:53the protocols of or what the layouts of the drink tables will
- 39:56be and whether or not House can hand me a drink.
- 39:58But ideally. I'll be collecting like a pop
- 40:04top which will have 250 mils of like a carb solution in it.
- 40:10And so I'll be taking that every 5 kilometres up until where I
- 40:15start to feel like I'm struggling to ingest it.
- 40:18In which case I would have just scrapped a gel to the pop top.
- 40:21And I'll just, I'll just switch from ingesting the sort of, you
- 40:25know, the more fluidy mix to the just trying to suck down the
- 40:28gel. But I'll look to try and get
- 40:30something in every five KS. And at 10 KS, I'll probably take
- 40:33a take on some caffeine. I'll have some caffeine tablets
- 40:36either strapped to a bottle or caffeine gel or but yeah, that's
- 40:40the sort of the the race plan I try and front end it like by 40
- 40:44KS, I'm really don't really take anything in.
- 40:46But up until then, up until that 35K drink bottle, I'll try and
- 40:49take in as much as I can, right? Probably around 80 grams an hour
- 40:54is probably like the sweet spot for me.
- 40:59So yeah, like Dean said, we don't exactly know what the
- 41:01bottle station setup looks like. Yeah, like we know it's
- 41:05available to have personalized drinks, but unless I've missed
- 41:08something, I don't think we know how often the tables are.
- 41:13So I mean, what I've done in Gold Coast was I had a bottle
- 41:18and three 10 Ki think from 5K, so 515-2535 and it had each
- 41:25bottle had the gels elastic band to it.
- 41:29So take the bottle, drink it, throw it and then just carry the
- 41:34gel until like the next 5K and consume that.
- 41:37And then the five KF that would pick up another bottle, another
- 41:40gel and just done that and kind of just not be overly committed
- 41:44to definitely consuming it or definitely not consuming at any
- 41:48given point and just kind of get as much down as early on as you
- 41:51can and then just manage it basically.
- 41:54Cool. That's interesting because I
- 41:56think like nutrition in marathons has like sort of
- 41:59really exploded I'd say in the past couple of years, which one
- 42:02way more important. So it'll be interesting, I'd say
- 42:04for everyone to listen to how you guys are and near the top
- 42:07end of the race and going about it.
- 42:09I'd say just before we move on, got on the back of the cobbler
- 42:14than the the fuel in question. When you carb loaded up to your
- 42:18eyeballs and you pick a gel up after what feels like jogging
- 42:22for 15 minutes and you try and consume that gel.
- 42:25That's probably one of the hardest things to do, but you
- 42:27know that you need to get on top of it early doors.
- 42:30And Ryan, you're obviously planning no toilet stops for the
- 42:34marathon crash. Yeah, they've actually got, I
- 42:37got an e-mail yesterday. So they've split initially they
- 42:41just had like an, I think they were calling it just like an
- 42:44elite start. But because they got so many
- 42:46people into the elite field, they've now split it into elite
- 42:50and preferred. So because my PB is towards the
- 42:53back end of this, the ranking and I've moved into the
- 42:57preferred category, but they sent me yesterday saying like
- 43:01the elite starters have access to, I can't think what they've
- 43:05titled it, but it's basically like a lounge on the start line.
- 43:08Presumably it's just got like private bathroom facilities and
- 43:11like you can literally get stripped off 5 minutes before
- 43:14the race starts. And they've included a couple of
- 43:18preferreds and their think because I was like an early
- 43:21entrance. So it puts me at ease knowing
- 43:24that I've basically got a toilet on the start line.
- 43:27So there's no excuses for any mishap.
- 43:31That's good to know. That's good to know.
- 43:32All right. And the last question guys, how
- 43:34is this block gone compared to your previous block?
- 43:38So for Ryan, your Gold Coast block and for Dean, was it the
- 43:42Sydney you've done before this Like how?
- 43:43How have they compared? Sure.
- 43:45Yeah, Yeah, Last one I did. Last marathon I ran the Osaka
- 43:48Marathon in 2024. So yeah, bit over a year ago
- 43:55this block was shorter than that.
- 43:58So like a shorter build up was probably like 8 weeks.
- 44:01I think in terms of my like top end fitness, you know, like my
- 44:06say my threshold and that sort of work definitely better than
- 44:11what it has been in the past. I think I hit higher peak
- 44:15mileage maybe just compared to the last one.
- 44:18So maybe an extra say 10 or so KS a week.
- 44:20And I was and I am compared to that doing a bit more quality in
- 44:23the week, like, you know, 3 workouts and a steady run is
- 44:27more than what I was doing last time.
- 44:29So I think I'm slightly ahead of where I was, albeit it's a
- 44:33slightly smaller block. So I'm optimistic.
- 44:37I'm optimistically thinking I'm in better shape than what I was
- 44:40for my last one, but we'll sort of see on Sunday.
- 44:44And obviously the most important thing, the company was way
- 44:46better, like your training partners have just improved
- 44:48drastically. Well, that's, yeah, that's what
- 44:50sort of got me. My lifted feeling I think was
- 44:53just the was the better quality sessions basically better,
- 44:56Better banter, better sessions. Makes all the difference, right?
- 45:00Until we left you stranded 4 weeks out in the thick of it.
- 45:06No longer easy easy doubling. I was easily by myself.
- 45:11And I was ridiculously hard singling.
- 45:15Yeah, this book compared to the Gold Coast one.
- 45:18It's funny, isn't it? Because hindsight is like
- 45:20everything, but at the time, you only know what you only know.
- 45:24So I remember, if I think back to the Gold Coast block now, I
- 45:27thought that, like, my mileage was massive.
- 45:30I didn't. I couldn't see how I would
- 45:31increase that. And also the like, the kind of
- 45:35the goal going into that was to break 2:30.
- 45:38And I remember thinking that like, that'll be I've reached my
- 45:41limit if I can do that. I don't see how it ever gets
- 45:45better than that. And I remember, you know, Dave
- 45:47Ridley, I remember him telling me once on a cool down, he was
- 45:51like, oh, yeah, I remember when I first broke 2:30.
- 45:54And it's weird. You'll just put blocks
- 45:56back-to-back to back and you'll think for each one that you're
- 46:00never going to be able to run better than this, but you just
- 46:03do. And then all of a sudden you're
- 46:04like, he obviously runs spot 218 or something now, like sub 220.
- 46:10And he was just, yeah, relating back to me that he was once in
- 46:14that trying to break 2:30, and it seemed like the best you
- 46:17could ever do. So it's weird to kind of be in
- 46:20this position only 12 months on or less than thinking I'm going
- 46:25to try and run sub 225. But in terms of the actual block
- 46:29itself, it's probably been quite a bit different really.
- 46:32There's been, it's been, I've learned a lot because I've kind
- 46:35of, I've clearly tested my body's limits in terms of what I
- 46:38can handle from both an intensity and a mileage point of
- 46:41view, kind of playing them off together because we've ran with
- 46:44the two sessions, sometimes three sessions.
- 46:47Do you? Do you reckon it peaked at the
- 46:49watermelon that Wednesday? Watermelon was probably.
- 46:53But yeah, when did the the heel and the Achilles start falling
- 46:57off after that? Was was it pretty soon?
- 46:59This may be an early indicator. No, it was when we when we
- 47:03started sprinting 30 KS up that mountain it.
- 47:09Was when I was trying to play. No, actually the I can pinpoint
- 47:12the exact moment it was. It was when we were halfway up
- 47:15and I said to you that my heart rate was looking good, then you
- 47:18dropped it. But yeah, it's been good because
- 47:25I kind of broke down a little bit and I've then like just
- 47:28managed managed it to the start line.
- 47:31So I've definitely learned a lot and in terms of the specificity
- 47:36of the sessions that we've done, learnt how to really kind of
- 47:39dial them in and focus on marathon effort and marathon
- 47:42pace, on the fatigue. So it sounds weird to say this
- 47:46pre race but I'm like almost already looking forward to going
- 47:51again once the time is right and recovery is done and everything.
- 47:55Well lads, yeah, watching News 2 boys training race definitely
- 47:59lit a fire in my belly to run a marathon and so hopefully I'll
- 48:04run on in the near, near future, but we'll see about it.
- 48:07But yeah, that's all the questions I have for IS.
- 48:08Appreciate it. Speaking of which, how How is?
- 48:12How is everything going with you through your travels?
- 48:15Have you tried test and returns of running?
- 48:17So yeah, a little injury update. I am running every second day.
- 48:21I because like I literally took nearly like 4 weeks off.
- 48:26Like now that I've come back to running like I'm not let's say
- 48:31as efficient as I previously was.
- 48:34So I'm sort of compensating, which is causing more little
- 48:37niggles, but they're only little niggles.
- 48:39So I'm just, you have to run through them.
- 48:42So yeah, it's just I'm in this like sort of awkward period
- 48:45where I'm like doing my sessions on the bike, trying to run every
- 48:48second day, trying to build up the strength in my legs.
- 48:52So yeah, it's like I'm nowhere near a race, but I'm just
- 48:57building back up. It's just slow and tedious and
- 49:00annoying. Yeah, sort of doing the work
- 49:03that you know is required, but it's sort of not, not the way
- 49:06you want to be doing it. You want to be at the track
- 49:08tonight ripping repeats and yeah.
- 49:11It's very frustrating but everything happens for a reason
- 49:14so I'm just going with it. Like you were saying to me the
- 49:17other day, though, what was it last year, your injury situation
- 49:20situation, Did you not run for five months?
- 49:22Did you say or something like that?
- 49:24Yeah, I was there for five months.
- 49:25So in the background mind, I'm always thinking it's never going
- 49:28to be as bad as that. Well, hopefully so.
- 49:31I know I'll come back. Because then that sounds like
- 49:34I'm saying you're going to out for five months again.
- 49:36But that wasn't my point. It's more so like how he turned
- 49:39it round on the back of that and went on to run like massive PBS
- 49:43still within the next 8 to 12 months.
- 49:46Yeah, yeah, that's it. And like I should have known
- 49:49like I should have picked it up, like I should have taken down
- 49:52time before I got the injury. It's just annoying.
- 49:53Like I'm my body forced it on me and blood, yeah, like loads.
- 49:58People come back stronger from injuries.
- 50:00So hopefully that's the case in my situation.
- 50:02I think we've all, we've all kind of danced with the devil
- 50:05and in that sense, haven't we? And we've, we've encouraged each
- 50:08other, whether that be rightly or wrongly, but we, we just kind
- 50:12of jumped in it together. And we've joked about like in
- 50:15the oven and being cooked and stuff.
- 50:18But this, that was the risks that we were willing to take for
- 50:22these marginal fitness games, wasn't it?
- 50:24And you have to kind of push the boundary and see what you are
- 50:26capable of, don't you? Yeah, yeah.
- 50:29And running's like you introduced quite a bit load into
- 50:31your legs, running all the time. And you sort of, as Owen sort of
- 50:35mentioned, you're sort of constantly feeling small
- 50:37niggles. So it's sort of it's a very hard
- 50:39to self diagnose when something's going to keep you
- 50:42out for a period of time or something that you can run
- 50:44through. And it's sort of a bit of trial
- 50:46and error and you sort of, yeah, there's risks and attached to
- 50:51all of it, isn't there? And you're sort of, you know,
- 50:54you're just trying to do your best with what you can and
- 50:56accept what risks you want depending on how big your goals
- 50:58are and how short or long term they are.
- 51:00Yeah, and it doesn't help as well that like now I'm running,
- 51:03I'm like fixed. Like I'm constantly always
- 51:06thinking about like my calf or my knee and I'm like, oh, is it
- 51:09sore? Is it like, is this a new pain?
- 51:11Is it in the same position? So like I'm like, I'm probably
- 51:14overtaking it as well. So I just need to sort of just
- 51:16get on with it. So hard because like the the
- 51:18biggest chance of you're at more risk of an injury soon after
- 51:25just having had an injury. Like it's sort of so you are at
- 51:28higher risk. So you're right to be thinking
- 51:30about it. But then at some point you sort
- 51:31of want to switch off from it because you constantly feel
- 51:34something and you sort of don't want to attach to it all the
- 51:37time either. Sucks the fun out of it.
- 51:39Might take over over Japan. Friends book, train harder.
- 51:43Knots matter. To push through it.
- 51:45Phenomenal. Hey, have you watched some of
- 51:47the recent episodes? No, for a chapter that like
- 51:51couldn't like couldn't run for like 2 weeks to run like a
- 51:54marathon the week after he started running again and he's
- 51:58just yeah, I don't know. 200 He reckons he might get up to 300
- 52:01KS in this block. He will.
- 52:03I might have to stop following him because he's crushing my
- 52:07dreams like he was injured, what, a month ago he couldn't
- 52:12run and he's since ran two marathons faster than what I'm
- 52:16going to run on Sunday and I've put everything into it.
- 52:20Yeah, he's feel. Different Hey Owen, tell Dean
- 52:24about your your jog the other day and your your heart rate 0.
- 52:27My God. So normally I'm like, let's say
- 52:30an easy like 30 minute jog, like the heart rate warden to get
- 52:34above like 100 and 25130 beats per minute.
- 52:37Now fair enough, Scarborough, it's a heavy place and along
- 52:40that coast it's really both guys.
- 52:42It was like it was pushing 160. Like, oh.
- 52:45Shit, it's really threshold. It was around like 4, 430
- 52:51kilometer pace and yeah, so it's loving that.
- 52:57It's crazy how fast you lose it, but I heard you get it back
- 53:01pretty fast. So I'm hoping and praying it
- 53:04comes back. But yeah, it's just not fun at
- 53:06the moment. It's very demoralizing.
- 53:08That's why we sorry around you. I was just going to say, like
- 53:12when people that are non runners go for a run and after you've
- 53:15had a bit of a layoff, you understand what they mean.
- 53:18Like everything hurts. You're puffing, like really
- 53:21unpleasant. Like I'm like, yeah, I wouldn't
- 53:23run if it felt like that all the time either.
- 53:25Like, it does feel good sometimes, yeah.
- 53:28Exactly, Dean, do we want to fly through training weeks last
- 53:32week? Sounds good.
- 53:33OK. So Monday was on the back of
- 53:36that and the Bunbury half that we've done on the Sunday.
- 53:40So my ankle and the heel was a little bit swollen, didn't pull
- 53:44up too well and I was wasn't feeling great about the prospect
- 53:48of running a marathon at this point in all honesty still.
- 53:51And so I just done a double cross train that day, No
- 53:54running, but 45 in the morning, 45 in the evening, just trying
- 53:58to get some sort of load into it.
- 54:00Tuesday I remember stupidly thinking that I was going to go
- 54:04to the track and RIP some 4 hundreds.
- 54:07That's a good job that I didn't. I just went for an hour's run,
- 54:09420 nines and actually felt pretty good.
- 54:12That was in the evening so just give myself maximum time for the
- 54:17swelling and stuff to come down. Pain had went away and then
- 54:21Wednesday was again an hour easy in the morning and that was all.
- 54:28Yeah, I was. I had to wait until Thursday to
- 54:31do anything of any intensity. So Thursday morning had a 30
- 54:35minute jog. Thursday evening back to the
- 54:38session and went to Lake Munger and done a 4K warm up with the
- 54:42group and then I had half an hour at marathon effort slash
- 54:48pace, which was tuned to heart rate.
- 54:52So this was very much a case of I think I have an idea what
- 54:56marathon peso effort might be. Let's kind of play that off
- 55:00against the heart rate and see if the that kind of confirms it
- 55:04all. It says otherwise, but because I
- 55:07hadn't really done anything that week in terms of intensity and
- 55:10whatever, my legs were pretty fresh and I was feeling like
- 55:13bully all this. The taper started early so I ran
- 55:18320 ones for half an hour, which I don't think will be marathon
- 55:22pace, but the heart rate was OK. I think the the weather was
- 55:26pretty well, it was cool, but it was quite windy.
- 55:28I think I chose to go the fast way around the lake there for a
- 55:32bit of a confidence boost because I was still on the cusp
- 55:36of not really having much confidence at this stage.
- 55:38So I knew I needed this one to be a good one.
- 55:41So yeah, I ran 320 ones and the heart rate average was, I think
- 55:46it was 164. Yeah, 164 didn't go above 167.
- 55:53So yeah, that was all good. Onto Friday.
- 55:57I accidentally uploaded, I was trying to set a timer to do my
- 56:02noodles and that went up as an upload to Strava as an hour.
- 56:06I didn't turn it off. And someone saw the funny side
- 56:10of that and asked left hand or right hand, because there was
- 56:14no, there was no distance on the activity.
- 56:19And yeah, that was kind of embarrassing.
- 56:21But once I've been called out for it, I couldn't exactly
- 56:24delete it and pretend like it hadn't happened.
- 56:27Just went for what was that, 52 minutes?
- 56:30Very random. I think it was only meant to be
- 56:3245 maybe. And I just pushed about a little
- 56:34bit there on Friday. Saturday, met Dean at Lake
- 56:39Munger again. Usually we'd go to Kings Park or
- 56:42something run from the run center on Saturday morning, but
- 56:46we had eight by two minutes on. Well, I had rather 8 by two
- 56:50minutes on one minute float just to kind of squeeze some pace and
- 56:55intensity out. And I think the prescription was
- 56:59around three 10s for the on and 320 fives for the float.
- 57:04So they were all pretty much within range of the target
- 57:08paces. And when I've looked at the the
- 57:10case splits afterwards, it's bizarre because what's not
- 57:13bizarre, it just shows that I was running the reps pretty
- 57:15consistently, but I was obviously just focused on what
- 57:18the two-minute arm was, what the one minute off was and not what
- 57:21kilometer for was going as 5 was.
- 57:23But all the case of Kate came out 316, three 16317, three,
- 57:2818315. So yeah, just nice and
- 57:30consistent. And again, that kind of backed
- 57:33up what I'd done on Thursday. Like the body felt good on the
- 57:37back of it, the heel wasn't UPS a funny business.
- 57:40So back kind of solidified my confidence and I was like,
- 57:44right, that's pretty much everything done now.
- 57:46Just need to basically pass time for a week and and we're there.
- 57:51So then someday just done 90 minutes at 4:30 twos with Adam
- 57:55around Herdsman Lake. And that was me for I think that
- 57:59was 102 K for the week with 2 1/2 hours cross train.
- 58:03So although that was that's two weeks out from the race.
- 58:07So traditionally the first week of a the taper, but I haven't
- 58:10really been riding a massive level of fatigue recently.
- 58:14So I think the purpose of that was just to restore some
- 58:17confidence and get a couple of good runs in which that was that
- 58:21was the case. Did you run to heart rate for
- 58:24your marathon sort of effort on Thursday?
- 58:27Was that sort of the the intention there?
- 58:30Yeah. I guess like just play heart
- 58:33rate off against pace and kind of test each one of them out and
- 58:37see which was kind of the like sample the pace and hopefully
- 58:41reaffirm it with the heart rate. And I mean the heart rate is
- 58:45probably a little bit high to be marathon pace, but the pace is
- 58:47probably a little bit too fast to be marathon pace as well.
- 58:50So it makes sense. But I justified that by saying I
- 58:54was. I was just looking for some
- 58:56confidence and and willing to kind of maybe push a little bit
- 59:00more than marathon effort so it can just make sense.
- 59:04Essentially, take a few beats off and a few seconds per chaos
- 59:07and there we have it. Yeah.
- 59:09Because, yeah, I was thinking that.
- 59:10I was thinking that 167's getting like getting close to
- 59:14your threshold, right? Yeah.
- 59:17Back off a. Few seconds sounds.
- 59:19Right. Yeah, because I remember RAF
- 59:21saying like, Oh yeah, last five or 10 minutes if we're feeling
- 59:25good, we could squeeze it. And I went to squeeze it and
- 59:29then there's there's nothing to be gained.
- 59:32So that's probably why it's went up to 167 because I think I ran
- 59:35like a 313 towards the end, but I was about to final leather it
- 59:39and empty the tank as well. It's not a good idea.
- 59:44That's. Very sensible.
- 59:46You tell us about your week. Yeah, yeah.
- 59:48So my week. So yeah, it came off the back of
- 59:50that half marathon down in Bunbury.
- 59:52I know I was having sort of a bit unwell going into that
- 59:56weekend and so I felt pretty rough on the Monday, Tuesday so
- 1:00:00just ran once on the Monday, 2 jogs on the Tuesday.
- 1:00:04And then waited until Wednesday afternoon before I did
- 1:00:08something. Not just jogging.
- 1:00:10So just sort of steady 40 minutes on the Wednesday
- 1:00:14afternoon. Still sort of coughing and not
- 1:00:16feeling pretty congested, so not feeling too flash.
- 1:00:20So sort of just ticked it off as a bit of a steady run.
- 1:00:24And then Thursday, yes, deal was not feeling 100%.
- 1:00:28So jogged into the office in the morning and then the guys had a
- 1:00:33workout, had that workout that you did.
- 1:00:34Saturday was sort of the main workout with the group.
- 1:00:37So 2 minutes on, one minute off. I just thought given I'm not
- 1:00:41feeling 100%, just to not go too hard.
- 1:00:45So I just ran with a couple of the guys and I think they said
- 1:00:48they wanted to do 3:15 and 3:30 for the ONS and offs.
- 1:00:51So I said that sounds fine to me.
- 1:00:53So I just did that with them. Sort of felt better after it
- 1:00:57than I did before. So I definitely on the other
- 1:00:59side of being unwell, which was good.
- 1:01:01So happy to do something but didn't feel like it was too
- 1:01:05taxing. Sort of pretty moderate in terms
- 1:01:07of effort. And then yeah, back to a couple
- 1:01:09of jogs on Friday and then Saturday, Saturday, the Saturday
- 1:01:14for a marathon, it's often maybe like a monitor or something to
- 1:01:18sort of really turn the legs over or I've done in the past
- 1:01:22just 10K's at sort of marathon pace or marathon effort.
- 1:01:27So yeah, it was sort of just, I sort of started out a little bit
- 1:01:31slow, still feeling a bit blocked up.
- 1:01:33It just sort of got up to around heart rate and sort of ran 315
- 1:01:37average. And my heart rate I think was
- 1:01:38169 for the the effort, which is a bit lower than what I think
- 1:01:42I'll look to target sort of say from 5 KS into the race.
- 1:01:45I'll look to target more closer to mid one 70s I think in terms
- 1:01:49of heart rate, yeah, felt not too bad.
- 1:01:52Felt better afterwards. Still felt like I was
- 1:01:54recovering. And then Sunday, because I was
- 1:01:56feeling a bit better sort of after after Easter egg hunts
- 1:02:00were done at home, went out for 90 minutes and yeah, got moving
- 1:02:04a little bit on that, but just tried to not go do anything too
- 1:02:07silly. So, so only 115 KS for the week,
- 1:02:11but perhaps even not wasn't feeling 100% and you sort of
- 1:02:15starting a bit of a taper. I thought that was probably
- 1:02:18enough. Seeing your run on Sunday, what
- 1:02:20was that loop about? How many laps of that did you
- 1:02:22do? Oh, why?
- 1:02:25Six. That's.
- 1:02:27That's Jerry's. No, that's Jerry's famous
- 1:02:30industrial 2 1/2 K loop. There's some good GPS Mayo
- 1:02:34around that loop, which helps. So I was just to, you know,
- 1:02:38boost the confidence running a quicker long run without
- 1:02:41actually having to run it fast. I sort of needed to do 45
- 1:02:44minutes out, 45 minutes at back. I couldn't pick a loop and I
- 1:02:47didn't want to half run around the lake.
- 1:02:49So I just thought I'll run that and then turn around.
- 1:02:51Yeah, fair. Enough.
- 1:02:52So, Owen, are you going to talk to us about some news which
- 1:02:55you've seen dropping recently and then on people's face?
- 1:02:59Yeah. So I was thinking like maybe
- 1:03:01once a month we could sort of like chat about like any
- 1:03:04noticeable, noticeable new shoe releases that like we might wear
- 1:03:08or people might be interested in or something like that.
- 1:03:11So we've got 3 shoes this week. I'll talk about two and then
- 1:03:13we'll talk about one, which he's actually tried.
- 1:03:16So the first one is that the new Puma shoe, so it's called the
- 1:03:20Puma Fast or Nitro Elite 3. So it's a pretty unique looking
- 1:03:25shoe because it has the carbon plate coming out on the toe box
- 1:03:29basically. And well, that was the previous
- 1:03:31version on the this version, the new version here now it's pretty
- 1:03:34similar and Puma have come out with saying that it improves
- 1:03:39your running economy by 3.15%. Now put that into like a
- 1:03:44situation for a three hour marathon that would knock 4
- 1:03:48minutes and 30 seconds off your time, which is a pretty wild
- 1:03:52stat to come out with. And I know they invited some
- 1:03:55Youtubers over to Boston and told them.
- 1:03:58Now this was like before the show before like it was released
- 1:04:02like for Boston and all that. It was still under embargo.
- 1:04:05So the Youtubers actually couldn't chat about it.
- 1:04:07But they were told to come to Boston to a lab test, bring
- 1:04:10their preferred like super shoe so they can compare the two
- 1:04:14shoes. And I'm going to say in like 99%
- 1:04:17of the situations that like the Puma one was more efficient for
- 1:04:21the person running, which, yeah, it's crazy.
- 1:04:24Like a while ago, like was the only shoe.
- 1:04:26But now Puma, after pulling out this shoe, which is, yeah, it's
- 1:04:29exciting and I'd love to get my hands on it.
- 1:04:31Have you guys any opinions? Just that I'd heard.
- 1:04:35Yeah, I'd only heard snippets of what you just recounted.
- 1:04:38And just that sounds pretty exciting.
- 1:04:40Like, I mean, it's like anything as soon as you hear like a new,
- 1:04:43more efficient shoe, you just want to see if you can get it,
- 1:04:45get a pair and it's just sort of really cool.
- 1:04:47Like, you know, ASIC sort of releasing some really fun shoes.
- 1:04:51Like obviously Nike had their sort of legacy shoes, but they
- 1:04:54don't seem to be getting any better.
- 1:04:56Adidas have released some really fun shoes.
- 1:04:58So it's like this is like another one to sort of drop in
- 1:05:01the mix of that, where like another shoe brand sort of is
- 1:05:04sort of competing at the very top tier of like the most
- 1:05:07economic shoes. So I, I, I thought I'd heard
- 1:05:12whispers that a lot of the Nike people like in the R&D space
- 1:05:16left to go to Puma. And so that that's where a lot
- 1:05:19of like the R&D innovation have come from.
- 1:05:21And that's where they've sort of been spending, they've spent up
- 1:05:24in that space. And that's why I sort of in the
- 1:05:26last sort of 18 months have been, you know, in, on, on this
- 1:05:31upward trend in terms of shoe enhancement.
- 1:05:34So like, I'm not entirely surprised based on sort of what
- 1:05:37I'd heard and where they were going, but like pretty excited
- 1:05:39to try and test a pair if they can get to Perth.
- 1:05:42I think, I think Josh actually mentioned tonight at training
- 1:05:44that that they might be trying to get a few pairs at the
- 1:05:47running center, but they're really hard to get hold of, so I
- 1:05:50have to keep an ear out. It'll be interesting to see how
- 1:05:53much they actually cost because I know one of the shoes we're
- 1:05:56going to talk about later, Ciccone's and Hoka have released
- 1:05:59issue and they're all over like the $400.00 price point.
- 1:06:03So it'll be interesting to see how what this one retails are if
- 1:06:06all of them are going to end up going above $400.00, which is
- 1:06:09absolutely criminal. Running, shoot, that doesn't
- 1:06:12even last. You freaking three?
- 1:06:13Well over 200 kilometers, really.
- 1:06:15And yeah, Ryan, do you have any opinions on it?
- 1:06:18No, just that like Dean said, Josh said they tried the run
- 1:06:22sensor, tried to put an order in for them and Puma said WA,
- 1:06:27they're only getting 4 pairs as as a whole state.
- 1:06:30So they're clearly making them hard to access, which only
- 1:06:35builds up people's desires to want it more, doesn't it?
- 1:06:37And then obviously later on they'll probably filter out into
- 1:06:40the market more mainstream. But I imagine for for a little
- 1:06:43while we might not get our hands on a pair.
- 1:06:46Yeah, yeah. So that's you're like premium
- 1:06:49like marathon race day shoe. The other shoe I wanted to talk
- 1:06:54about was the Adidas Boston 13. Now, the unique thing about this
- 1:06:58one is so the Boston 12 has been around.
- 1:07:01Well, the Boston is such a staple shoe.
- 1:07:03It's sort of similar to let's say the Ziconi Endorphin Speed
- 1:07:08or the Nike Zoom Fly 6 or the ASIC Magic Speed 4.
- 1:07:11So it's sort of in that category of like sort of a like a plated
- 1:07:14training shoe. So yeah, the Boston 12 was
- 1:07:18released in June 2023. So I think I'd have waited like
- 1:07:22to go to 22 months to update this shoe, which is, which is
- 1:07:27pretty like unique in like today's climate because brands
- 1:07:31are trying to like, pump out a shoe every like 12 months to get
- 1:07:34money off you. So yeah, I don't know much about
- 1:07:38the changes. I know the upper is meant to be
- 1:07:40more comfortable and there's just more of Adidas's like
- 1:07:43premium, like light strike foam. So yeah, that's just another
- 1:07:49notable mention. And there was big hype around
- 1:07:51that this weekend with the Boston Marathon that they only
- 1:07:53released it. So yeah, that'd be worth a try.
- 1:07:57Well, me and Dean have ventured into the Adidas market recently,
- 1:08:01haven't we? Do you have any Adidas shoes on
- 1:08:04on your rotation currently, Owen?
- 1:08:06No, I was actually in Adidas Outlet today and I was going to
- 1:08:09get this. It's like the Adidas Supernova.
- 1:08:12It's just like a daily trainer, but it was for like 65, $5 and I
- 1:08:18was going to pick it up, but I was like, no, I can't because I
- 1:08:21always do this when I'm injured. I always look by loads of shoes
- 1:08:24and sort of like teasing yourself because you can't even
- 1:08:26wear them. So no, I I didn't buy any, but
- 1:08:31I'd love to pick up of the pair of the Boston Twelves cheap now
- 1:08:35give them a go. And even the ones the pro trees
- 1:08:38Ryan you have, I'd love to give them a go on the cheap because
- 1:08:41like, I can't justify spending like stupid money on shoes
- 1:08:45anymore. Like when they're going to
- 1:08:46$400.00, like that's just crazy. It's criminal.
- 1:08:49And but no, I'd love to try. I asked for at the moment of
- 1:08:53only New Balance and. I was talking to one of my mates
- 1:08:57at home and he's been wearing, I think the pro fours to do a lot
- 1:09:02of his training. And I think the ones I've got
- 1:09:04are the pro threes. And he said that he's battered
- 1:09:09them for months on end and the the wear and tear is like
- 1:09:13minimal. So then it made me look at mine
- 1:09:15and I haven't had mine that long, but they're still probably
- 1:09:18had two 203 hundred KS in them. And when you look at like the
- 1:09:22plate and stuff on the bottom, it's perfect almost.
- 1:09:25Which is in contrast to obviously those are the SLS that
- 1:09:28you've got the which obviously aren't so durable, but they're
- 1:09:31like ultra high spec, aren't they?
- 1:09:34But he did say that those SLS £500 in England which is like
- 1:09:40over $1000 which is just nuts. Like the price difference
- 1:09:44because what are they here is 7 or definitely not hard to say.
- 1:09:52Don't know, don't know. No, you've got some decent
- 1:09:55discount, I think, yeah. Yeah, that's right.
- 1:09:59On the top get the shoes. By the way, I own you should.
- 1:10:02You should. You wouldn't have seen Dean
- 1:10:05recently, but every time I see him a train and he's got a new
- 1:10:08shoe box in his hand, I don't know what's going on.
- 1:10:10Oh. Yeah.
- 1:10:12Yeah. Yeah, yeah, I got a pair of the
- 1:10:14EVO 1. Oh wow.
- 1:10:17Yeah, yeah. And anyway.
- 1:10:19Actually, this is a good question.
- 1:10:22Sure. Choice for for Sunday.
- 1:10:24Yeah. Ryan go first.
- 1:10:26Ryan, go first. Just the A3 is the the epidemic
- 1:10:29path with the flames on. They've only got 30 KS on them
- 1:10:33maybe so I'll stick with them for now.
- 1:10:35The spade flames. Good at them.
- 1:10:38Lucky they go down. Yeah.
- 1:10:40They're lucky here, aren't they? Yeah.
- 1:10:42No, I'll be. I still don't know, to be
- 1:10:46honest. Yeah, I think I'll pack both and
- 1:10:50yeah, it'll either be the Alpha fly ones or the Evo ones, one or
- 1:10:55the other. And then the shoe that you want
- 1:10:57to talk about, you've got to try on another good super shoe.
- 1:11:01Yeah, Is it the Coney Saucony Endorphin Pro?
- 1:11:05Yeah, the Pro 4. Yeah, Yeah.
- 1:11:08I tested that on Thursday night for that workout that I did and
- 1:11:13it was sort of I didn't wasn't going flat out in that workout.
- 1:11:16So I haven't given it sort of a full, full test, I suppose.
- 1:11:23But, and, and I think there's the comments on the issue, like
- 1:11:26I'm not the only one to say that, but the foam itself is
- 1:11:28probably like the softest foam I've probably felt.
- 1:11:32And you, you can feel that under foot, but it doesn't feel like,
- 1:11:36it doesn't feel very unstable. Like if I put on a, I've worn so
- 1:11:39many different super shoes and I, I feel like I can fall out of
- 1:11:43some of them. Like you can sort of, you feel
- 1:11:45like there's so much your legs are doing so much lateral work
- 1:11:48to sort of stabilize the shoe, like your ankles or your quads,
- 1:11:51whereas I didn't get that feeling from them.
- 1:11:53So they certainly, it didn't feel like they were an unstable
- 1:11:56shoe despite being so incredibly soft.
- 1:11:59So then for me it becomes, and they feel fairly lightweight as
- 1:12:03well. So I think the question will
- 1:12:04become where, where do they stack up in terms of economy
- 1:12:08compared to the other shoes? You know, some of the
- 1:12:11responsiveness you get from that Nike foam, you can really feel
- 1:12:14it. So I think I need to do, I've,
- 1:12:17I've spoken to a couple of people that have also tried them
- 1:12:20and the feedback was quite positive.
- 1:12:22So it seems like I think the shoes like a, a very good shoe.
- 1:12:26I think I need to give it a few more runs to know exactly how
- 1:12:30much I like it. But yeah, first impressions were
- 1:12:33good. It's sort of light.
- 1:12:34It is super soft, which I don't necessarily mind, provided you
- 1:12:38feel like you're getting that return when you put forth
- 1:12:41through it. So yeah, fun, fun to try and
- 1:12:46I'll be, I, I won't, I'm not going to take too much risk in
- 1:12:49the last week ahead of Ballarat in terms of changing shoes.
- 1:12:52So I won't wear it again until after the marathon.
- 1:12:55Yeah, I heard as well. It was a super, super soft shoe,
- 1:12:58but people are raving about it, as in, like, have really good
- 1:13:02opinions on it. Yeah.
- 1:13:04So yeah. Nice one.
- 1:13:06Thanks for the the shoe round Owen.
- 1:13:08Appreciate your insight there as a former shoe salesman yourself.
- 1:13:13Got that industry specific knowledge.
- 1:13:15This definitely what I was doing for the last two weeks.
- 1:13:17So I'm yeah, my studies. We have a couple of listener
- 1:13:20questions to just bring us home. So Ryan Shand, he hasn't asked a
- 1:13:25question, but he's given us some thoughts now.
- 1:13:28He sent this in pre Boston. So he said Pat Tien and new PB
- 1:13:32but still a 207 man he said and the two O 6 new PB but still 2O6
- 1:13:40low. So he doesn't think he's going
- 1:13:41to get into the 2O fives but it's just saying new Australian
- 1:13:45records essentially keep chogi 11th.
- 1:13:49We didn't even touch on Kipchogi really in the London field.
- 1:13:52But I would lean towards what Ryan's suggesting there, that he
- 1:13:56isn't going to be competitive and he's given us a Ballarat
- 1:14:00winner. But I did his his thoughts on
- 1:14:03that. I did reach out to Ballarat and
- 1:14:05ask them for the full elite field, but they haven't provided
- 1:14:08it. So we we can't kind of go into a
- 1:14:13Ballarat prediction there as good as.
- 1:14:16I touch on that one. As good as Barat is, they should
- 1:14:19be putting out an elite field. They could just build hype
- 1:14:22around the race and everything like that.
- 1:14:23People can get interested, like local runners you know is
- 1:14:26running and yeah, it's not really good on them, is it?
- 1:14:29Yeah, I think kind of in a roundabout way, they somewhat
- 1:14:33have like in fits and starts. It's been communicated or spoken
- 1:14:37about on different platforms and stuff.
- 1:14:38But yeah, you want that like official, like boom, this is who
- 1:14:42we've got. This is what's happening.
- 1:14:45But yeah, it's a shame. Josh Tie Would you have a road
- 1:14:49dog, a marathon, IE no gels, no super shoes or no water?
- 1:14:54I, I, I definitely would think about going back to like old
- 1:14:58shoes to do it. Like I'd love to know what I
- 1:15:00could run not in super shoes. So I'm definitely tempted, but I
- 1:15:04reckon I'd my legs are just fall apart to be honest.
- 1:15:07Like I don't know if I don't think it did end well, but I'd
- 1:15:09like to give it a try. Something I I couldn't see
- 1:15:12myself ever doing it, but maybe for a bit.
- 1:15:16The right price if if you, you guys pay for my flight and entry
- 1:15:20to Boston next year. Yeah, OK.
- 1:15:23Exactly, Yeah. You can do that like that guy
- 1:15:26that I sent you the rail of before who Sprint off the start
- 1:15:30line and got his selfie video. That would be you, yeah.
- 1:15:33Yeah, yeah. Next year, let's.
- 1:15:36See. And we'll get you, and we'll get
- 1:15:37you an easy double thing. But yeah.
- 1:15:40That's probably sold out already.
- 1:15:44Yeah, I'm not sure I'd fair too well in in that road dogging a
- 1:15:48marathon, I reckon because you're so dialled into like
- 1:15:51being accustomed to taking on fuel and stuff now your body
- 1:15:54just caving on your butt. All my shins would give way
- 1:15:57without the Super shoes, big sloppy, lanky legs smashing them
- 1:16:03and big TB, who I believe was one of your former training
- 1:16:07partners. Dean says he's not asking a
- 1:16:10question, but I think he's he's putting something on your place.
- 1:16:13There might be some content that you can share to this time to
- 1:16:16talk about Ultra Records for charity.
- 1:16:19Yeah, I think he was one of the few people that shared some
- 1:16:21content with me regarding people attempting records in the name
- 1:16:27of charity that maybe they weren't in the shape to to do so
- 1:16:33careful not to turn it into a double trouble.
- 1:16:35But I think like, but running like my understanding is like,
- 1:16:41say, like we're sort of re entering that time, which I
- 1:16:45imagine because I wasn't running at this point, but back in the
- 1:16:4780s when sort of the birth of the fun run was sort of was the
- 1:16:51fun running era. And like you, what's cool about
- 1:16:54a fun run is that you you can line up alongside like Olympians
- 1:16:58and elite athletes and you can be a, you know, weekend warrior
- 1:17:02or a punter and you get to sort of toe the line with them.
- 1:17:05And that's a fun experience. You don't get to do that if it's
- 1:17:08a football player or you know, someone from another profession.
- 1:17:11And so that's what fun running was so exciting about fun
- 1:17:13running. But the, but I suppose and, and
- 1:17:18then also like you would also have like a, a major charity or,
- 1:17:22or that you would also fundraise for.
- 1:17:24And so they were like 2 key elements of it.
- 1:17:26And so I think that I think they're fantastic.
- 1:17:28They're super important and raising money for A cause is
- 1:17:31sort of what, what running sort of fits really well with.
- 1:17:34So I'm all raising money for for charity, but perhaps, you know,
- 1:17:39calling out that you're going making claims to try and link to
- 1:17:43your own self promotion doesn't make a lot of sense if you sort
- 1:17:46of have no business sort of doing that.
- 1:17:47Like I think running people in the running community generally
- 1:17:50a fairly, you know, more generally err on sort of softer
- 1:17:54spoken sort of people and, you know, making some outlandish
- 1:18:00claims ahead of having done anything to sort of suggest that
- 1:18:03you're capable of doing. That's probably not what some
- 1:18:06people want to say. Thought he was trying to set you
- 1:18:09up for a challenge to run like the Ultra record for charity or
- 1:18:13something, but he's just trying to set you off on one, wasn't
- 1:18:17he? Yeah.
- 1:18:17He was, yeah, yeah, I think he would.
- 1:18:19If he was on here he would have got fired up for me but.
- 1:18:22Like the darling, I don't know if you've seen in the background
- 1:18:25then, but I think we're going to have to wrap it up boys.
- 1:18:28The the building security just come to kick me out.
- 1:18:31I. Did say that I broke my train of
- 1:18:35thought. So just just the context that I
- 1:18:39live in an apartment block and I'm recording from like the
- 1:18:44shared working space as part of the like communal area in the
- 1:18:48building. And it's clearly past the
- 1:18:51allowed time that you're allowed to be in this room because a guy
- 1:18:54in a hive, his vest is just knocked on the door and told me
- 1:18:59to leave. So that is ample time.
- 1:19:01And anyway, we'll wrap it up there.
